The endless deaths can be read as serious horror or BlackComedy, but it doesn't diminish the excellent story.

The author's characterization of Erik is marvelously monstrous and human at the same time, and they paint a heartbreakingly sympathetic portrait of Christine. Their relationship is as unhealthy as ever, but deeply intriguing. I also really love their take on the modern Daroga and Madame Giry.
