!!This fanfiction series contains examples of:
* AdaptationalDumbass: In canon, Ron is fairly BookDumb but has some pretty good instincts. In this fic, he... doesn't.
* BigEntrance: The cue to reveal that Ruby woke up was when [[spoiler:Alexandrite appears and kicks major Death Eater ass!]]
* TheComplainerIsAlwaysWrong: Ron gets hit with this pretty hard, due to some drastic {{Flanderization}} and TookALevelInDumbass compared to his canon counterpart. Any wit or insight he displayed in canon has been either downplayed heavily or removed outright, leaving him in solely the role of the guy who complains, or has a different opinion than Harry, Hermione and Steven, and consequently gets proved wrong time and time again. He does avoid becoming RonTheDeathEater; he's a clueless doofus and very much TheLoad, but not evil.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Despite his cheery disposition, Steven harbors much emotional turmoil over the events that happened in his world. [[spoiler:He shows homesickness more than once, mentioning his dad and Connie on more than one occasion]]. He was even a part of the huge epic battle that eventually led to the Gems [[spoiler:poisoning the planet]]. This is best displayed during Lupin's session with the boggart, his fears so intense that [[spoiler:the boggart outright ''attacks'' him in the form of Jasper and Yellow Diamond instead of just [[DefangedHorrors harmlessly scaring]] him]]. Dumbledore reasons that his fears are far more real and deep-rooted than the average student.
* ExploitedImmunity: Amethyst is the perfect person to fight the basilisk, because its lethal stare is no more than a momentary setback to her. Looking in its eyes merely causes her to poof and then reform again seconds later, ready for more.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Steven is the only character whose friendly demeanor transcends his own house, being happily invited to the other house's tables for lunch.
* GeckoEnding: Thanks to Steven and the Gems' unique and unpredictable effect on the world, the story ends before the events of ''Deathly Hallows''.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Steven, which is to his detriment due to the wizarding world's prejudices against nonhumans and hybrids. Steven gets it even worse than most due to Gems not even being biological.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Given the Ministry's policies on nonhumans and Minister Fudge's bitterness towards Dumbledore, the Daily Prophet is used to slander Steven, questioning if he should even be allowed in Hogwarts in the first place.
* TheHunterBecomesTheHunted: When Voldemort [[StormingTheCastle sends his Death Eaters to invade Hogwarts]], the tables are turned immediately when [[spoiler:Alexandrite]] manifests, reducing the number of casualties and turning Voldemort's BadassArmy invasion into a SuicideMission in a FoeTossingCharge.
* TheLoad: Ron, who compared to canon is both an AdaptationalDumbass and an AdaptationalJerkass. He doesn't get to make a lot of positive contributions to the plot; even the famous chess scene from first year doesn't happen as the Watermelon Stevens just smash their way through the chess board anyway.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Steven's shield is proven ''so'' durable that when struck with the Killing Curse -- a curse famous for its power to InstantKill ANYTHING it strikes -- merely knocks him unconscious. It gets even stronger the older he gets, as it's eventually able to outright repel the Killing Curse, albeit not without cracking.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Taking place after the events of the original cartoon, [[spoiler:Steven]] is much older than he looks. [[spoiler:His natural gem-ability to alter his own age]] allowing him to blend in with the other students despite actually being in his late teens.
* OutOfFocus: Harry, as the story goes on, gets kind of shoved into the background and often ends up with very little to do. He's still ''there,'' but Steven totally eclipses him in screentime, attention and importance to the plot.
* ReplacementGoldfish: [[spoiler:Hermione is somewhat this for Steven, replacing Connie.]]
* SeriesContinuityError: In the first chapter, it is stated that Steven and four gems (Pearl, Amethyst, Ruby and Sapphire) were found by the veil. Later on, [[spoiler:Peridot]] wakes up during the summer before Year 3, making it ''five'' gems instead.
* SparedByTheAdaptation:
** [[spoiler:Since Steven was the one chosen to be Hogwart's Triwizard Tournament Champion, Cedric was saved from his unkind fate at the hands of Voldemort]].
** Thanks to [[spoiler:Sapphire's future vision]], the team was able to prevent the deaths of [[spoiler:Sirius and Dumbledore]].
** Using his healing spit, Steven ended up [[spoiler:reverting Voldemort into an innocent child]]. Whether or not it was worth the trouble considering [[spoiler:his damaged soul]] is left up for debate.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Steven has a tendency to dominate the plots and overshadow all the other characters. Even Harry becomes a secondary character, with Steven being treated as much more important and even getting more attention from Voldemort.
* TheStationsOfTheCanon: Despite the presence of Steven and the Gems, and tons of minor changes, the overall plot stays remarkably close to the ''Harry Potter'' canon for the most part.
* WakeUpFighting: When [[spoiler:Amethyst]] wakes up at the Ministry, she reacts to the various strangers supposedly keeping her and the others "hostage" not too well.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: [[spoiler:Steven and Hermione are implied to have ''something'', but it is only ever implied. Steven invites Hermione to the Yule Ball where they accidentally fuse. They fuse later during the climactic battle.]]
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: Steven and the Gems were driven to drastic measures to prevent Homeworld from invading their original Earth, and poisoned the entire planet, making it lethal for gems but harmless for its natural inhabitants. Though it made Earth and their loved ones safe, it makes it impossible for them to ever return again even if the Veil allowed two-way travel, much to Steven's sadness.
