''A New Chance'' is an AU ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'' FanFic series written by author [[http://www.fanfiction.net/u/2090198/ARCEUS_master ARCEUS-master]] and based in Fanfiction.Net. Started in early 2010, it is so far composed of two stories:

* ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5753031/1/A_New_Chance_At_Life A New Chance at Life]]'' ('''Completed''')
* ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7491757/1/A_New_Chance_For_Adventure A New Chance for Adventure]]'' ('''Ongoing''')

The first story in the series, A New Chance at Life, was started in Feb. 16th 2010 and completed on May 26th 2011. The story starts at the end of [[Anime/PokemonHeroes Movie #5]], where [[OlympusMons Latios']] HeroicSacrifice is averted, so now the dragon is very much alive. Out of gratitude and a desire for adventure, Latios and his sister Latias decide to join Ash on his adventure. The story covers the remainder of Ash's journey's through the Johto Region (based on the author's [[WildMassGuessing belief regarding the location of Alto Mare]]), up until the conclusion of the Silver Conference and its immediate aftermath. It ends with a SequelHook leading up to our heroes' adventures in the Hoenn Region. The author has since rewritten chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 24 in order to improve the quality of writing within those chapters.

The sequel, A New Chance for Adventure, was first posted on Oct. 24th 2011. Having finished the Johto region with a solid performance in the Silver Conference, Ash and his friends set their sights on the Hoenn League. But his journey through Hoenn is one that promises a foray of new challenges, a new series of friends and rivals to be met, and a powerful evil ready to rise...

It's also worth checking out the author's other stories: ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8068957/1/Stopping_The_Storm Stopping The Storm]] ''and ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/13383662/1/Guardian-Angels Guardian Angels]]''.

!!This fic provides examples of:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:A-F]]
* AccidentalMisnaming: As per canon, Buffalo Bill and Doctor Simba... Butch and Professor Namba experience this a lot.
* AloofBigBrother: Latios is much more calm and collected than his little sister Latias, who is more of a [[GenkiGirl Genki Dragoness]]
* AntiHero: Latios - his MindRape of the three poacher brothers (who, in fairness, ''had'' sold away Larvitar's mother recently) is evidence of that.
** To further prove it, [[spoiler: he killed Rico after Ash ordered to let him live]]
* AscendedExtra: Bianca, both in-story and out. She goes from one-movie character to recurring character in A.N.C.A.L., to becoming Ash's travelling companion during Hoenn.
** Also, [[SugarAndIcePersonality Larvitar]], [[{{Keet}} Phanpy]], and [[spoiler: [[TeamMom Pidgeot]]]].
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler: Rico is killed by Latios. Considering he sold Larvitar's mother, bragged about it, and then tried to murder Ash out of pure spite, it is hard to complain.]]
* BackFromTheDead:[[spoiler: The Father Latios. Slightly justified by that fact that as a Pokemon equivalent of a deity, he wouldn't stay for very long. Instead, a soul destroying curse trapped him in Alto Mare for a century. The actions of Annie and Oakley and Ash ended up freeing him.]]
* BelligerentSexualTension: Gary's Umbreon was not happy to find out that Ash helped Pikachu win their fight. She even starts chasing him down to get him to fight her again.
* BerserkButton: Just try and ask Bianca for a date... Justified in that it was [[ChivalrousPervert Brock]] doing the asking.
** Another one of her berserk buttons is hurting Latios and Latias, and since Ash is their trainer, she does not give him peace over it, especially after a big battle.
** For ''any'' of Ash's pokemon, it's hurting him. [[spoiler: The Fearow found out the hard way.]]
** Latios has no pity for poachers who would separate a mother from her child for money, having been an orphan himself. [[spoiler: [[AssholeVictim Rico]] paid the ultimate price for selling Larvitar's mother.]]
* BigBadEnsemble: Maxie and Archie in "A New Chance For Adventure" (if the preview is to be believed).
* BigBrotherInstinct: Latios to his sister.
* BigBrotherMentor: Phanpy adopts Larvitar as his "little brother" and helps him deal with his trauma.
* BigEater: Ash really loves eating, and constantly asks others when it is time to. Larvitar could also count, since he steals other Pokémon's food when they aren't looking.
** As Gary puts it, Ash doesn't eat like a Snorlax. Snorlaxes eat like Ash.
** As of A New Chance for Adventure, Larvitar definitely counts.
** [[spoiler:Jessie's Seviper certainly counts]]
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler: At the end of ''Hunting the Hunter'', Ash and Officer Jenny are able to rescue Team Rocket's Pokemon and arrest Rico, but arrive too late to save Larvitar's mother]].
* BloodKnight: Charizard lives for fighting, even constantly challenging Latios and Latias to combat in an effort to make himself stronger.
* BrotherSisterTeam: Latios and Latias.
* CaptainObvious: The announcer in the Silver Conference League, to the point of being a RunningGag.
--->*Pokémon X does Y*
--->'''Announcer''': Pokémon X has just Y'd!

** It's pretty much Lampshaded, too.
* CerebusSyndrome: Not just yet, but it's being hinted at coming, thanks to not only the more arc-based story overall, but to the devious plan Team Rocket (the organisation, not the [[GoldfishPoopGang trio]]) is orchestrating behind-the-scenes...
** This is already become evident in the sequel, with the appearance of Team Magma, the return of the evil entity that was apparently responsible for [[spoiler: the death of Latios and Latias' dad through a deadly soul curse]], and [[spoiler: Latios ''crushing one of the villains to death in cold blood''.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Lots of it, especially with the primary characters. Brock is also getting some ''forced'' development with his perverted ways, thanks to Latias.
** [[spoiler:Recently Jessie and James, after the incident with Rico, have resigned from Team Rocket and have established respect among the Main crew.]]
* [[ClingyJealousGirl Clingy Jealous Mon]]: Bayleef, still.
* ComicBookTime: Averted. Unlike canon where he is still ten, Ash actually ages. He is eleven at the start of the story and is close to twelve. This actually fits quite well with the evidence canon presents on time progression.
** He celebrates his 12th birthday in the ''first'' chapter of A.N.C.F.A.
* CoolBigSis: Ironically, Latias plays this role to Larvitar and Phanpy rather than her actual brother.
* CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler: Lance tries to take Latios, so obviously they try fighting back. His Dragonite knocks Latios, Pikachu, and Charizard out in one hit. Fortunately, it's subverted right afterward where Latias gets a surprise attack in and disarms him by taking his pokeballs.]]
** [[spoiler:Jesse, James, Meowth, Treecko, and Cacnea have all experienced this during there battles with Seviper.]]
* DeathGlare: Larvitar is [[TheWoobie disturbingly good at these]].
* DemotedToExtra: The previews for "A New Chance for Adventure" (at the end of ANCAL) imply that May and Max will be this.
* DescriptionCut: Just like in the main series, Pikachu is captured by Team Rocket en route to Hoenn. Latios is immediately worried, because he figures that after kidnapping what they've focused their life on, they'd have a viable means of escape. Next scene, Team Rocket is trying to figure out how get off the ship, while also {{Lampshading}} how they should have thought a exit strategy sooner.
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: Ash with Gary after beating him in the tournament, and [[spoiler: again with Lance.]]
** [[spoiler:Eventually happened with the Team Rocket Trio after Brock successfully convinced them to resign due to the nature of their job.]]
* DoorStopper: Definitely the case for ANCFA - it is adapting the entire Hoenn League arc, and each chapter is on average upward of 10,000 words!
* TheDreaded: Amazingly, '''ASH''' gets this treatment, since he is now known after Johto as the "kid with the Latios." It is especially shown when Giovanni is giving assignments to two of his agents, who also have a bone to pick with Ash. He orders them to infiltrate Team Aqua and Magma, but he also warns them to stay away from Ash unless they know they can win, aware of the the defeats he's dealt them. To put that in perspective, Giovanni is more afraid of dealing with a kid ''not thirteen years of age'' then with infiltrating another criminal enterprise.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Averted, as having an {{Olympus Mon|s}} during a televised tournament has made Ash quite famous, especially in Pallet Town. He even gets a surprise party when he gets back.
* EntitledBastard: Jessie and James end up begging Ash to rescue their Pokemon from Rico. Initially everyone except [[AllLovingHero Ash]] and [[GenkiGirl Latias]] outright refused. But when they learn it was Rico they proceed to give chase, since he was the one who purchased Larvitar's mother. [[spoiler: It is defied later when after Ash returns their Pokemon, Brock lectures them on the fact that the kid who they've been chasing and trying to rob for years just saved their Pokemon, and it would be disgusting to ever try and rob him again. They end up resigning from Team Rocket.]]
* EvilGenius: Professor Namba and Sebastian, just like in the anime.
* EvilPlan:[[spoiler: Team Rockets Project Incarceration: Giovanni intends to capture much of the world's Legendary Pokemon with Prison Balls, which not only bends a Pokemon to the trainer's absolute will, but destroys any remnant of their original personality and accentuates their awesome power. With five Legendaries, Team Rocket could rule the world.]]
* FanBoy: Max, upon meeting Ash is all over him with questions and wanting to meet Latios.
* FamedInStory: After competing in the Silver Conference with Latios, Ash gains the fame, fans ([[FanBoy especially Max]]), and recognition he never got in canon, with various figures from Johto to Hoenn knowing him as the kid with the Latios.
* FixFic: Primarily for the matter of Latios' death in the movie, and Latias' unrequited crush on Ash (though it's not there yet, it's heavily indicated they will become the OfficialCouple).
** Among other things, it resolves [[BrokenBase controversial]] issues within the anime such as [[spoiler: Ash never getting Pidgeot back - here, Pikachu makes sure to remind Ash of the promise he made, and pulls him in the right direction at the right time]].
** [[spoiler:Team Rocket instead of going back to stealing Pokemon after being torn up by Rico end up resigning and aspiring to be good (There good qualities were hinted at a lot in the anime).]]
* {{Flanderisation}}: Macey, the Fire-type trainer who Ash faced in the Silver Conference, is reduced to being (and being regarded as) a shallow FanGirl who crushes on Ash. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] in that Ash [[ForWantOfANail doesn't save her life (or her Vulpix from Team Rocket) as he did in canon]], giving the crush she develops ''here'' less depth or justification.
* ForWantOfANail: Because the events are paced differently, a number of events happen differently - most notably, Ash and Co. weren't there in time to stop Larvitar's mother from being captured by the poachers; add to that [[CoolBigSis Latias]] coaxing him (and Ash's growing maturity), which results in Larvitar actually ''becoming'' Ash's Pokémon rather than a mere GuestStarPartyMember.
** Ash ends up in Top 4 in the Johto League.
** Bianca ends up joining the cast in ANCFA.
** Ash has a full team when he reaches Petalburg City (and isn't going to travel with May and Max full-time), among them [[spoiler:Pidgeot]]; so he battles and defeats Norman, earning the Balance Badge ''much'' sooner than in canon.
** [[spoiler:Jessie and James end up robbed by Rico, but unlike in the main story, they end up begging for Ash's help. This forces them into [[HeelFaceTurn quitting Team Rocket]].]]
* FreakOut: Larvitar when strangers try to touch him - see Chapter 1 of the 2nd story for reference.
* FriendshipMoment: Ash and Gary have a moment at the lake after Gary loses in the tournament.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:G-M]]
* [[GenkiGirl Genki Dragoness]]: Latias, very much so.
* GoodIsNotNice: Latios. His overprotectiveness of Latias can grate on her, and he can act cold toward humans and still distrust most of them, albeit for understandable reasons. Not to mention the lengths he goes to punish group's enemies can frighten Ash. This is best shown when he permanently incapacitates the poachers that sold Larvitar's mother. [[spoiler: He also kills Rico after the poacher gloats about selling Larvitar's mother.]]
* GreaterScopeVillain: Giovanni, who in contrast to canon has an active sub-plot; one which will play a role during the sequel.
* GreenEyedMonster: [[spoiler: Lance says he wants to make sure Latios gets proper training, but he later admits he was just jealous of Ash getting a Legenday dragon instead of him. He gets better though.]]
* HappilyAdopted: Phanpy, and later Larvitar, call Ash "Daddy". Justified because Ash was there for both of their hatchings, and was the only father figure around for them.
* HarmlessElectrocution: Did you piss off Pikachu and have him fill you several hundred volts of electricity? No problem if you're Latios. Also, Pikachu's alarm clock mode is shocking Ash until he gets out of bed.
* HatesBeingTouched: Latios avoids contact with any human he doesn't trust thoroughly, including children trying to play with him. Latias is much more willing.
** Larvitar as well, though he's gotten better at it over time.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:After Ash rescues Arbok, Weezing, and Meowth from Rico, a [[ReasonYouSuckSpeech few choice words]] from Brock convinces Jessie and James they not only has their criminal career been a total failure, but they can't go back to stealing from a kid who just risked his life and Pokemon to save theirs. By Chapter 13, it is clear that the realization stuck.]]
* HeroicRROD: Latios finishes off the toughest of Harrison's Pokémon, but is so injured that he couldn't recover properly in the time before the next match. This eventually costs Ash the tournament.
* HulkSpeak: The Camerupt [[spoiler:owned by Team Magma]] in Chapter 4:
-->''Camerupt, SMASH!''
* HypocriticalHumor: Bayleef chews out Charizard for acting childish and immature, while she herself constantly glomps Ash.
* ImprovisedWeapon: Heracross gets in a super-effective attack against Gary's Nidoqueen by breaking off parts of the Ice field and hurling them at her. [[spoiler: Latios later uses the Rock field he's on to bypass Shedinja's Wonder Guard.]]
* InnocentInnuendo: Referred to by Pikachu in ANCFA Chapter 6, when he tells the Lati siblings about [[CallBack Ash's Metapod vs. Metapod fight back in Episode 4]].
* InterspeciesRomance: It's not yet there, but there's loads of hinting to it (see ShipTease, below).
* {{Keet}}: Phanpy.
* [[TheKidWithTheRemoteControl The Kid with the Olympus Mon]]: Ash
* KnightOfCerebus: [[BigBad Giovanni]], whose scenes are much darker than the rest of the story (which retains the adventure/friendship themes primarily). Teams Aqua and Magma also do this, but not to the same extent.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler: Latios' murder of Rico, while [[AssholeVictim not exactly unprovoked]], is something that a law enforcement official can't ignore. And since Ash is Latios' trainer, it meant he would have gotten in serious trouble ...had Skailyn not ordered her Froslass servant to alter Officer Jenny's memory. ]]
* MamaBear: [[spoiler: Pidgeot]] goes berserk when Fearow threatens to kill Ash, and deals with him justly.
* MoralityChain: Ash is this to Latios. This is best shown when Latios attempts to punish the Team Magma agents and their Pokemon after they are beaten. Pikachu, after a good shock, reminds him how Ash would feel.
* MotorMouth: Max, when he goes all {{Fanboy}} over meeting Ash.
* MysteriousProtector:[[spoiler: Skailyn, a Shiny Rayquaza and friend of Latios and Latias, secretly aids the team in their rescue of Larvitar's mother from Rico, has one of her minions erase the memory of Officer Jenny so Latios isn't charged with Rico's murder, and sets up a protective sphere (that they are unaware of) to shield them from the evil spirit that tried to kill them over a century ago.]]
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: [[spoiler: Lance's Dragonite points out the inherent stupidity in trying to attack and steal Latios, but goes along with his trainer's plan anyway.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:N-S]]
* NotAllowedToGrowUp: Averted.
* ObliviousToLove: Ash, who wonders why [[FanGirl Macy]] tries to follow him and needs Latias to explain to him what a date is. [[spoiler: This could also relate to Misty when she gets upset at having to leave Ash at the end of ANCAL.]]
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: Regarding [[RunningGag Pikachu and bikes]]. From Chapter 2, after Pikachu's Thunder attack destroys Team Rocket's mecha and is releasing stray electrical bolts:
-->'''Pikachu''':"Noooo! Stop that bolt!"
-->'''May''': "My bike!"
-->''Latias stops the bolt using her psychic powers''
-->'''Latias''': "You owe me one, Pikachu!" (''She grins'') "You bike destroyer!"
-->'''Pikachu''': Alright, thanks!
* OutOfCharacterMoment: When [[GreenEyedMonster Lance]] finds out that Ash has caught Latios, he throws his morals out the window and tries to steal the legendary dragon. [[spoiler:He only snaps out of it after Latios and Latias beat the crap out of him.]] His Dragonite {{lampshade}}s this trope while trying to make him reconsider.
* ParentalSubstitute: Larvitar and Phanpy consider Ash to be their father, for all intents and purposes; Ash himself is delighted to have two "surrogate sons" and is very protective of them in turn.
* PoliceAreUseless: Annie and Oakely, the villains from the fifth movie, escape rather handily while en route to prison.
* ThePrankster: Latias enjoys pranking people, and does it often enough that her family got tired of scolding her for it. It helps that she can turn invisible.
* PsychicLink: Latios and Latias have one, due to being legendaries and twins. Latios also gets one with Ash after they get their soul-bonding.
* PsychicPowers: Latios and Latias, obviously. [[spoiler: And Ash may be well on his way, due to the soul-bonding he did with Latios.]]
* PuppyDogEyes: Latias is fond of using these to wiggle out of punishment for her constant pranks. Only her adoptive grandfather can resist them.
* [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld Really 109 years old]]: Latias and her brother. [[WeAreAsMayflies And they're considered to be just children by the standards of legendary pokemon.]]
* ReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler: After Ash and company rescue stop Rico and rescue Team Rocket's pokemon, but not before he sold his mom to Team Magma, Bianca harshly criticizes them for stealing and for refering to Ash as "twerp". After Arbok, Weezing, and Meowth are returned to Jessie and James, Brock gives his own. Though more composed and organized,it really digs into them, and becomes a plea for them to change by making them realize several things: That they feel the pain of losing Pokemon, and have been doing that to Ash for years, that they simply ''can't'' beat Ash at anything, and if they start going back to trying to steal Pikachu from Ash, it means they are truly irredeemable. The result? Jessie and James resign from Team Rocket.]]
* RedOniBlueOni:
** Latias is Red; Latios is Blue.
** Pikachu is Red; Latios is Blue.
** Bianca is Red; Latias is Blue.
** Ash is Red; both Pikachu & Latios are Blue.
* SealedEvilInACan: The attack by Team Magma on the Oldale Ruins opens the chambers, releasing a malicious specter [[spoiler: that in the past was responsible for the imprisonment of the Father Latios within the Soul Dew, and created the orbs that allow control over Groudon and Kyogre. And if Skailyn's anger was any indication, was responsible for a lot more evil in the ancient past.]]
* SealedGoodInACan: [[spoiler: The father Latios had been trapped in the Soul Dew by an ancient enemy. See BackFromTheDead. It is the thievery of Annie and Oakley and Ash's bravery that allow him to break free by the 6th chapter. ]]
* SecretWeapon: [[spoiler: Harrison uses a Shedinja, whose ability ignores all damage from non-super effective attacks. When he reveals this during their match, Latios has no such attacks.]] Cue collective OhCrap.
* ShipTease: Between [[InterspeciesRomance Ash and Latias]], and with Pikachu and Gary's Umbreon.
* SiblingYinYang: Between Latias & Latios.
** Also seen between Phanpy and Larvitar, even though they aren't true siblings; ironically, the younger Larvitar is the more serious of the two 'brothers'.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Despite the wishes of [[spoiler:Ash's adoring fans]], this is averted for the most part - while Ash does use Latios frequently and takes out some of his strongest adversaries with him, he tries hard to make use of his other strong Pokémon and his abilities as a GuileHero. This is especially evident after Latios is put out of commission from the battle with Harrison. The experience is used by the author to give Ash a learning curve as a trainer.
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: Speaks Fluent Pokemon: Ash after giving up some of his soul, is given some of Latios' power, allowing him to speak and understand Pokemon, to his joy.
* StoryArc: A few of these are happening simultaneously:
** Larvitar's search for his mother.
** Team Rocket's plan for world domination
** Team Magma and Aqua's own respective plans for the world.
** [[spoiler:The return of the Father Latios and his attempt to capture his mortal enemy and reunite with his children.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Larvitar, at first as a coping mechanism for his [[BreakTheCutie trauma]] as an egg, but later as his natural demeanour - he goes from being primarily icy to being primarily sweet, especially around Ash. This actually helps him out when battling stronger opponents such as [[spoiler: Jon Dickson and his Tyrannitar]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:T-Z]]
* TeamMom: Of all people, [[spoiler: Pidgeot]].
* TechnicolorEyes: Ash gets red eyes as a result of the soul-bonding process that allowed Latios to live. Pretty much only himself and his mother notice it though.
** Semi-averted in the last few chapters, where ''2'' others do.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Ash is very firm on this one when it's brought up as an option, and has to fight Latios to convince him to [[spoiler:not kill Rico for what he did to Larvitar... Even then, [[AntiHero Latios]] [[SubvertedTrope does]] it, albeit discreetly, because he cannot personally let the pain Larvitar endures thanks to Rico go unpunished.]]
* TimeAbyss: Many of the older Legendary Pokemon have been around for millions of years. [[spoiler: A century in a Soul Dew doesn't really bother Father Latios as much as missing out on raising his children.]] The infant Lugia encountered in the Whirl Islands is alone older than human history.
* TournamentArc: Similar to the regular anime, but now Ash has an {{Olympus Mon|s}} beneath his belt.
* TrainingFromHell: In order to prepare the team for their next match, Brock assigns different excercises to Pikachu and the others. For Pikachu, he assigns him building up speed and reflexes by avoiding a multitude of attacks, while the others are tasked with improving their aim by trying to hit a moving target. This can also be applied to the steel wing/iron tail training given to Latios and Pikachu.
--->'''Pikachu''': "Wait, you aren't going to-"

* TroubledButCute: Larvitar. By the first story's end he's ''mostly'' gotten over it, but he still has trouble, such as when strangers try to touch him.
** [[spoiler:Treecko is looking to be this]]
* TrueCompanions: So very much - in particular, Phanpy considers the Pokémon he's closest to among Ash's team (and a few others, as well) as his family.
** [[spoiler:Latias and Latios consider some of the Legendaries such as Ho-Oh, Mew, a Shiny Legendary Beast trio, and many more as this in the past.]]
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Latios is convinced to drop his inivisbilty in Ch.1 of the second story, but instead of causing a stampede of young trainers eager to see an [[OlympusMons legendary Pokémon]], he only recives a few incredulous stares.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Pikachu and Latios are a Type 2 - so much arguments and banter, but really close friends and confidantes as seen with how they take mutual amusement at many things.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler: Lance, who wants to take Latios to train him, whether Latios want him to or not. He gets better though.]]
* WhamEpisode: In chapter 14 of ANCFA, Bianca learns about Contests and decides to become a Pokemon coordinator.
* WhoWouldBeStupidEnough: [[ContinuityNod The magikarp salesman]] tries to sell Ash a golden Pidgey that supposedly can lay golden eggs. Latios, Latias, and Pikachu easily see through his charade, but Ash only realizes this after his Pokémon tell him. Humorously, Team Rocket falls for it.
* TheWorfEffect: Barring [[SpotlightStealingSquad Latios and Charizard]], Ash's other Pokémon actually fare somewhat poorly during the matches against Gary and Harrison (in the former match, only Pikachu takes out a single Pokémon, Umbreon - while Charizard beats three and Latios defeats two). Narrative-wise, this is evidenly done to give Latios a chance to shine and prove he's nearly a GameBreaker for the unprepared. YMMV on whether this is a good thing or not.
* WouldHurtAChild: Annie and Oakley make it clear they will do whatever it takes to make Ash pay for ruining their plans
** The Fearow near Pallet Town eagerly desires to [[DisproportionateRetribution kill]] Ash, blaming him for all his troubles. [[spoiler: Pidgeot defeats him before he gets that chance though]].
** [[spoiler:Rico tries to knife Ash after being completely and soundly defeated. With Ash's Pokemon nearby, he fails completely]].
** Giovanni himself devotes some of his resources to tracking down Ash, and possibly defeating him.
* XanatosGambit: Giovanni engages in one. He allows Jessie, James, and Meowth to pursue Ash, and report where he is. If they capture Pikachu and the Eon Twins for him, he wins. If they don't, he can still figure out where Ash is if he wishes to take him down, or simply stay ahead of him and keep him out of his plans. [[spoiler: He never imagined them quitting though.]]
* YankTheDogsChain: [[spoiler:Rico had been mentioned as the one who bought Larvitar's mother from the Poacher Bros., which helps convince Ash and co. to track him and [[EnemyMine help Team Rocket along the way]], but when Ash's group finally catch up to him he's already sold her a while ago... to Team Magma. Needless to say, Larvitar is distraught and the others are furious.]]
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: [[spoiler: Brock tells this to Team Rocket to convince them to quit, citing the fact that their past experiences with them prove that their not total monsters. By Chapter 13, it is clear he succeeded.]]
