''[[http://mlpblackestnight.deviantart.com/ Lanterns of Equestria: Blackest Night]]'' is a ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic[=/=]Franchise/GreenLantern'' crossover fanfiction (and roleplay) written by a number of authors, primarily [[http://brutalityinc.deviantart.com/ Brutality]], but also including Alexwarlorn, creator of the ''Fanfic/PonyPOVSeries'', and [[http://crazymikeprime.deviantart.com/ CrazyMikePrime]] among others.

In the aftermath of the ComicBook/BlackestNight and facing the ComicBook/RiseOfTheThirdArmy, the [[AnthropomorphicPersonification Entities of the Emotional Spectrum]] powering the various corps fear for their existence. As a precaution, they put a piece of their essence into special rings and cast them into another dimension; the world of Equestria.

However, [[BigBad the Black]] has also found Equestria and begins another [[ZombieApocalypse Black Lantern invasion]]. As the prime rings find their new hosts, they must fight against an onslaught of undead terrors...and perhaps even each other.

While all the chapters can be found in the group above, the story begins [[http://fav.me/d5har2t here.]] The rest of the story (between the prologue and other chapters and hasn't been entirely converted to fanfiction format yet, but is more or less what will be in the story) can be found [[http://comments.deviantart.com/1/292005461/2546975400 here]] and continues here: [[http://comments.deviantart.com/1/292005461/2682800658 here]].

!!Lanterns of Equestria contains examples of the following tropes:

* BadassCreed: Naturally, all the Corp's Oaths.
* BaitAndSwitch: The teens Dead Ringer, Monster Bait, and Weekly Victim are set up to seem like they're going to be attacked by a Black Lantern (with one of the teens trying to scare another with a zombie mask), but even though a Black Lantern ''does'' show up, it's several hours after they left, and it heads in the opposite direction.
* BigBad: Black Lantern Commander Hurricane.
* BigDamnHeroes: This happens quite a few times.
* BigEater:[[spoiler:Applebloom, Rufus]]
* BodySnatcher: [[spoiler:Though her construct lanterns are not intended to fool anyone, they're capable of everything their stolen identities could do in life. Apple Bloom demonstrates this ability on two sneak thieves she ketches stealing apples from the family farm.]]
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:The Black Lantern attack on Sweet Apple Acres does this to Applejack, in part because her ''dead family'' and '''Zecora''' are among the Black Lanterns.]] The sight of [[spoiler:Black Lantern Zecora]] also does this to Apple Bloom.
* BreakThemByTalking: The Black Lanterns do this a lot. [[spoiler:Most notably Zecora to Applejack, which sends her into a HeroicBSOD.]]
* BullyingADragon: Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon pick on the now Red Lantern Scootaloo. While she couldn't have known HOW powerful she'd become, the fact Scootaloo was presently drooling ''flaming plasma'' and clearly a bit on the unstable side should've indicated this was a bad idea. [[spoiler:If it weren't for Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle shielding them, Scootaloo would've killed them.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: The Yellow Lantern Corp. Despite running on Fear and later containing literal monsters, it's still lead by Twilight Sparkle and firmly on the good side. While more brutal, the Red Lanterns are still firmly good guys as well, in part due to Rainbow's Element of Loyalty helping keep their UnstoppableRage in check.
** Luna, as per canon, which is why the Black Lanterns invoking the night in their oath [[ThisIsUnforgivable is a MAJOR sore point with her]].
* DarkIsEvil: The Black Lanterns.
* TheDreaded: The Red Lanterns, even thought they're good guys. It says a lot when Twilight's fear powered ''{{Kaiju}}'', chosen ''specifically'' for their scariness, are ''less'' feared than them.
* TheDragon: Technically Commander Hurricane to the Black, but [[DragonInChief he's the de facto]] BigBad of the story. ''His'' Dragon is [[spoiler:Zecora]].
* DramaticIrony: Bon-Bon doesn't believe in the Sass-Squash, who was met offscreen by a teenager earlier in the same chapter.
* EmergencyTransformation:
** Scootaloo is made a Red Lantern to save her life after an attack by the Black Lanterns. [[spoiler:Rarity later had to transform Diamond into an Indigo Lantern after Scootaloo nearly killed her in her rage.]]
** [[spoiler:Trixie was inducted into the Yellow Lanterns to protect her from Rainbow's wrath.]]
* TheEmpath: The Indigo Herd are all this, but Rarity was already naturally compassionate, hence why she was chosen as the Prime Lantern. The Ring just boosts it.
* EmptyShell: [[spoiler:Apple Bloom's victims are left alive after their identities are stolen, but they don't have their cutie marks and are non-responsive]].
* FallenHero:
** Commander Hurricane was this even before his death, according to the story Rainbow Dash tells Scootaloo -- he couldn't adjust properly to the changes brought about by peace and unity between the tribes, and took to attacking villages incognito to fulfill his craving for battle. When his actions were discovered, he was forced into exile, where he died alone.
** Chancellor Puddinghead and Smart Cookie also become Black Lanterns, though in there case it's not them so much as the Black controlling their bodies.
* FromNobodyToNightmare:
** Scootaloo once she becomes a Red Lantern, though she's still a good guy.
** This also seems to be happening with the pony who got the [[{{Greed}} Orange Light of Avarice]]: [[spoiler:Applebloom]]
* HeelFaceBrainwashing: The Indigo Herd works this way by (except for Rarity herself and [[spoiler:Celestia]]). But Rarity intends to use it to gradually teach them empathy.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:Applejack goes into one upon discovering Zecora has been killed and become a Black Lantern. Worse, since her Ring runs on Will Power, it causes her to lose her powers. She finally snaps out of it to protect Granny Smith from a massive Timber Wolf.]]
* HeroicSacrifice:
** Applejack's willingness to do this to save the CMC from falling to their deaths is what attracts the Prime Green Lantern Ring to her.
** Cadence almost does this to protect a group of refugees from Black Lanterns using her love to make herself a beacon. Thankfully, Fluttershy and her Star Sapphires show up to help her.
* HesBack: [[spoiler:Applejack finally snaps out of her HeroicBSOD and creates a massive wall ten pony paces thick, 40 paces high and 100 paces wide to protect Granny Smith from a giant Timber Wolf.]]
* HopeBringer: Pinkie Pie is chosen at the bearer of the blue light of Hope. She earned that title inspiring Applejack to regain her spirit, but when she takes on the role of lantern, she gives that hope all across Ponyville, empowering the green lanterns, weakening the yellow lanterns, and soothing the red lanterns. All because of her hope.
* HorrorHunger: The orange light fills its host with constant, ravenous, ''endless'' hunger. [[spoiler:Apple Bloom starts to exhibit this after she claims the orange ring, becoming able to eat more than her whole family does at each meal. The ‘hunger’ also affects those very close to her physically or when she is using her orange power ring.]]
* {{Kaiju}}: Twilight starts recruiting these into her Corps, giving them sentience in the process. [[spoiler:Fluttershy eventually recruits an ''Ursa Major''.]]
* KnightTemplar: Rainbow Dash and her Red Lanterns somewhat, due to how their Rings work, though they're still more in control than the original Red Lantern Corp. [[WhatTheHellHero They get called on it several times]].
* JumpedAtTheCall: [[spoiler:Raindrops refuses becoming the other Lantern groups for various reasons, but devotes herself to becoming a Green Lantern. She ultimately becomes the first person Applejack intentionally recruits.]]
* MoodSwinger: Applebloom becomes this after the Black Lantern attack on Sweet Apple Acres and [[spoiler:discovering Zecora was killed.]]
* MundaneUtility: Some of the Lanterns use their rings for more mundane tasks, like farm work.
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler:Not checking on Zecora, resulting in the Black Lanterns killing her and turning her into one of their own is this to the Mane Cast, especially Applejack who's the one who discovered it and goes into a HeroicBSOD.]]
* LossOfIdentity: [[spoiler:Apple Bloom's victims are reduced to cutie-markless [[EmptyShell shells of their former selves]]]].
%%* OneManArmy: [[spoiler:Apple Bloom herself.]]
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: The Black Lanterns of Equestria are different even compared to the original Black Lanterns. Besides [[RememberedICouldFly using their rings a lot more than in the original]] ComicBook/BlackestNight, these Black Lanterns are a bit smarter and individually willed than their DC universe counterparts. They also have the usual Black Lantern traits of [[FromASingleCell intense regenerative capabilities]] and [[MonsterFromBeyondTheVeil being a twisted facsimile of the original being they used to be]].
* PaintingTheMedium:
** Whenever one of the rings speaks, it's bolded, surrounded by parentheses, and italicized, like so: '''''( = Text. = )'''''.
** Black Lantern speech has capital and lowercase letters arranged seemingly randomly in the words. Their ring text, besides that and brackets instead of parentheses surrounding the text, is the same as the other ring text.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: The Prime Lanterns (at present Twilight, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy, and Rarity), due to having the most experience with them and representing their group the best, are also the most powerful. Best shown when Rarity [[CurbstompBattle curbstomps four of the vengeful Red Lanterns by herself]] while saving Trixie from them.
* RashomonStyle: Invoked by Twilight when considering the various view points between the different Lantern Groups they get from their Rings. She has no intention of following in Sinestro's footsteps, but still reads his version of events, as well as wants to hear both the Red and Green Lanterns' perspectives, so she can piece together the truth from their narratives.
* RedeemingReplacement: Since they're the Bearers for the most part, some of the new leaders of the various Lantern Corps are this compared to the originals. Most notably is Twilight Sparkle becomes the new leader of the Yellow Lantern Corp, and is still her kind, goodhearted self and even removes Sinestro's name from their Oath. The new Star Sapphires (under Fluttershy) probably qualify as well.
** The Red Lanterns are also a bit nicer, in part due to being led by Rainbow Dash, who retains her UndyingLoyalty towards her friends.
** There's also [[spoiler: Applebloom]], who, despite getting the orange light, learns that it's not a light of greed but of desire and that it manifested from her desire to keep those precious to her safe.
* RememberedICouldFly: In the original ComicBook/BlackestNight, most of the Black Lanterns didn't get much mileage out of their ring abilities (save those who were Lanterns in life), with those who were heroes apparently preferring their original abilities, and the rank and file Blacks being little more than CannonFodder. Here, they use their powers far more often.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:Zecora, who falls victim to the Black Lanterns and gets turned into TheDragon.]]
* SanitySlippage: Applebloom seems to be experiencing this to a degree due to the BreakTheCutie she suffered due to the Black Lantern attack on Sweet Apple Acres and [[spoiler:Zecora's death.]]
* SuperEmpowering: The Prime Rings allow their wearers to make rings for others.
* TreasureRoom: Apple Bloom owns a hoard that she hides from her family after they make it plain that they will do something about it. It contains both valuable and sentimental objects that she refuses to part with. She is constantly looking to add to it in any way she can.
%%* ThisIsUnforgivable: How Luna feels about the Black Lanterns invoking the night in their oath.
%%* UnstoppableRage: The Red Lanterns, naturally, but they seem a bit better at controlling themselves than in DC canon.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** The Reds are often called out on their behavior.
** Granny Smith gives the CMC this after they nearly got themselves killed with an ill-planned stunt.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Big Macintosh gives a speech like this to Applejack [[spoiler:to help her recover from her HeroicBSOD induced by the Black Lantern attack on Sweet Apple Acres]]. She receives another one from [[spoiler:Granny Smith that finally snaps her out of it.]]
* ZombieApocalypse: The Black Lanterns.
