->"I've had to kind of volunteer to play characters that I can relate to because I didn't have any growing up. So the characters I've been playing and am playing now are characters that could've saved me when I was younger and questioning a lot of things. This representation is so important, this visibility is so important."

Sara Ramirez (or Ramírez) is a Mexican-American actor and singer. Born in Mazatlán in August 31, 1975, Ramirez moved to UsefulNotes/California as a child with their Mexican-Irish mom after their parents split. They graduated from the Juilliard school and began working on Broadway in 1998. In 2005, they won a MediaNotes/AwardWinners for their performance as Myth/TheLadyOfTheLake in Theatre/Spamalotthe song "Diva's Lament" had to have some of its lyrics changed to reflect this, as it was IWantSong initially despairing a lack of Tony awards. They were also in the original Broadway casts of A Class Act and Theatre/TheVaginaMonologues, and appeared in the 2001 Broadway concert performance of Theatre/Dreamgirls.

Because of Ramirez's amazing talent and the recognition to prove it, ABC offered them a role on Series/GreysAnatomy, where they would portray the well-loved Dr. Callie Torres in their StarMakingRole. One episode of the MedicalDrama features primarily Ramirez singing covers of alt pop songs. Because of Callie's Coming Out Storyline, Ramirez has been able to be a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights and was given the Ally for Equality award; they later came out as bisexual themself and continue to promote equal rights and social justice for their fellow queer people and immigrants.

Before they were famous, they voiced the title character of VideoGame/UmJammerLammy in 1999. They also provided the voice of Queen Miranda on Creator/Disney's WesternAnimation/SofiaTheFirst and related franchises beginning in 2012. Ramirez also shares their full name with a character in Literature/TheEchoCaseFiles, though they definitely had it first. Speaking of Sara's name, since it's Spanish, it's pronounced Sa-ra, not Sair-a.

When Callie moved to New York on Grey's Anatomy, she was not intended to so abruptly be PutOnABus, but Sara reportedly asked the showrunners for some time off, taking a year away from acting but still appearing on public platforms and singing. Sara's return came in late 2017 with the recurring character of Kat on season 4 of Series/MadamSecretary, who similarly took time away from her field before a triumphant return, with Sara getting AndStarring credit for the season.

In 2020, Ramirez came out as nonbinary, and changed their pronouns to they/them in 2021.
