12	The main protagonist is an AntiHero that nevertheless goes by very idealistic anarchist creeds. Appearing as a dark figure in a BlackCloak and wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, V's real name is just as unknown as his face that is only described by Dr Surridge as being "pathetically ugly". Swearing to bring down the repressive order that now rules England, he builds the Shadow Gallery with art pieces he saved from destruction and uses it as his headquarters. From then on, he patiently and skillfully destroys various symbols of power, disrupts Norsefire's [[Creator/GeorgeOrwell orwellian]] surveillance system and emits subversive tracts and TV appearances. A WarriorPoet, V is a philosophical, eccentric yet generally unflappable man with a quirky sense of humour that even his protégée has a hard time getting.

14	Later, we learn that V is actually a codename taken from his room number - 5, which is "V" in the Roman numeral system - back when he was jailed in the concentration camps that were created by Norsefire to "purify" the state. After being chosen with 4 other prisoners to undergo some terrible tests on human beings, he becomes incredibly intelligent, strong and agile, and burns down the whole camp, setting himself free along with many other prisoners.

From his point of view England is one of the few barely functioning states in the post war world, and V actions risk sending them back into Chaos. [[spoiler:Then he takes LSD to try an understand V. It succeeds, but also exposes his deep guilt over his role in the purges. Pre-War he was deeply involved with and respectful of the black and LGBT communities with many of his friends being a part of one or both. Post-War the loss of his wife and child allowed him to radicalized by Norsefire, and he personally sent his said friends to the camps where they met their horrible ends. While he is still determined to stop V, he concludes and accepts that he is a monster.]]

Following this, Adam Susan, while not outright punishing him for this infraction, still personally orders him to take an extended vacation. Eric still stubbornly continues his hunt for V.

Not only are the crowds so demoralized that they're forced to cheer for him by gunpoint, but he pulls over his motorcade to shake hands with Rose, who draws her revolver and blows his head apart.]]

While one might expect a fascist dictator who has successfully taken over an entire country to be a ruthless, intimidating, and perhaps charismatic villain, Adam Susan is a rather pathetic and lonely man. His internal monologue shows that he ''is'' very intelligent and thoughtful, but he's rather stiff and unimposing in public. Even his name isn't particularly striking.

Fortunately for him, he's able to dismiss this before the subordinate starts asking any awkward questions.

In the upheaval that follows, he takes the opportunity to form Norsefire, take over England, successfully carry out a genocide of various undesirables, and rule the country with an iron fist for several years.
121	* GenderBlenderName: His surname, Susan, is a name that is considered to be a female name.
122	* HeelFaceDoorSlam: He actually seems to be acknowledging his mistakes and thinking that he should try to treat his citizens better towards the end of his life, only to be assassinated immediately afterward. Perhaps a DownplayedTrope, since it's less of a HeelFaceTurn and more of considering being ALighterShadeOfBlack.
123	* MachineWorship: The FATE supercomputer is the only thing he truly loves. Mixes elements of CargoShip and {{Robosexual}} in with the worship.
124	* TheManBehindTheCurtain: The brutal leader of the Norsefire party is really just a lonely, sexually repressed man who doesn't exhibit any great or admirable qualities.
125	* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: His position as a former police constable, combined with his homophobia and his conviction that he talks to God are highly reminiscent of former Manchester chief constable [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Anderton Sir James Anderton]]. It's probably accidental but the way he's drawn is also very similar to the physical appearance of Gordon Brown.

128	* PetTheDog: After Finch gets in a fight with and punches Creedy, Finch is surprised by how lenient and understanding Susan is about the whole thing. Susan declines to officially punish or reprimand Finch, and instead gives him a combination of unofficial suspension/mandatory holiday so Finch can try to deal with his stress and pull himself together.
129	* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: He is an anti-Semitic, homophobic white supremacist responsible for exterminating groups like Jews, non-whites, and gay people from Great Britain.

133	* SanitySlippage: He is so disconnected from other people and the world around him that he's slowly going mad. Early in the story he's already got bats in the belfry but is still functional. V's hacking of FATE, first to make him think the computer loves him back, then to reveal V's been "cuckolding" him and using the FATE system against him makes his break from reality much worse, until there's no coming back.
134	* ThoseWackyNazis: Alan Moore was obviously inspired by Hitler when he wrote Susan.
135	* VillainousAromanticAsexual: A totalitarian dictator who has never felt love or attraction towards anybody other than his supercomputer (and, arguably, himself).
136	* VillainousBreakdown: He loses all semblance of sanity upon seeing that FATE has been hacked in by V.
137	* VillainDecay: In the beginning of the story, Susan is a very intimidating figure - a ruthless, tyrannical despot who inspires terror in his subordinates to a point where no one in their right mind would dare cross him. Later, as he undergoes his SanitySlippage, he becomes more withdrawn and ineffective as a leader, prompting many of his ambitious underlings to plot a coup against him. [[spoiler:By the time of his death, the society and government he built are both crumbling to pieces and he can't do much besides watch and sigh in resignation.]]

However, Almond is killed fairly early in the story, thus paving the way for the less-effective [[BigBadWannabe Creedy]] to step in.
145	* DomesticAbuse: A really, really nasty one. Being one of the most powerful men in a totalitarian government apparently turned him into an abusive, ungrateful and violent husband to his yet gentle and faithful wife.

And when he is killed off the clock, the government uses that as a means of denying his widow any benefits she should be entitled to for him dying in action.
