!Ghouls

[[folder:General]]
Humanoid beings that feed exclusively on human flesh, and possess enhanced physical traits. They typically live in hiding, periodically hunting human victims in order to survive. In turn, they are hunted by the Investigators of the Ghoul Countermeasures Bureau. Half of the series focuses on their viewpoint and the conflicts between various factions of Ghouls.
----
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: They're perceived as being dangerous and violent monsters without exception, with some members of the CCG even declaring Ghouls are incapable of human emotion. It is entirely untrue -- Yoshimura explains to Kaneki that while many Ghouls do have a pretty callous attitude towards human life (and life in general) due to their experiences, they're still as capable of feeling pain, grief, joy, love etc. as any human. There's an interesting little moment of doublethink when Takizawa claims that ghouls don't have camaraderie, cooperation or fellowship, and Hide replies that must mean organised groups are rare. Takizawa has to admit it actually happens all the time.
* AnimalMotifs: Many Ghouls are associated with a particular animal, used as part of their cover when hunting.
* BizarreHumanBiology: In the Tokyo Ghoul universe, both humans and Ghouls possess structures called Rc cells, which are described as "liquid muscles" and can become as solid as teeth. However, Ghouls naturally have ''much'' higher levels of these cells than Humans. By concentrating these cells in a sac-like organ in their back, they can manifest a LovecraftianSuperpower called a Kagune, which is used for hunting and combat. The form it takes depends on the Ghoul's Rc type.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Their sclera turns black when they reveal their true nature.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: The Koukaku type either wields it like a blade, wrapped around their arm or simply uses it as a shield.
* CannibalismSuperpower: It is possible for a Ghoul that devours other Ghouls to mutate, becoming one of the rare Kakuja types.
* CastFromLifespan: Nobody is quite sure what the "average lifespan" of a Ghoul is because nearly all of them end up dying to violence - either from another Ghoul or Ghoul Hunters. Kimi hypothesizes that their lifespans would generally exceed that of a human's but their constant regeneration needed from combat [[CastFromLifespan lowers their life expectancy]] to be around the same as a human's. [[spoiler:In the peaceful world of the epilogue Kimi expects Ghouls will typically outlive humans by several decades, more for Ghouls that developed Kakuja. She projected that as a dragon Kaneki could have lived for over 200 years and even removed from the body she expects him to live for at least 120]].
* CombatTentacles: The Rinkaku type grows tentacles from their waists.
* CoolMask: Many Ghouls wear a mask when hunting or fighting, to protect their identities.
* CynicismCatalyst: It is shown that many young Ghouls struggle with the idea of killing humans, but grow into ruthless killers after their loved ones were slaughtered by Investigators.
* DrivingQuestion: In-universe, no one seems to know where they came from in terms of biological evolution, except that the manga suggests that they first showed up in the late 1800s.
** The final Chapters suggest [[spoiler: that either a normal human cannibal or a human with an Rc cell over-secretion disease transformed into a Dragon some time in the 1800s and [[MotherOfAThousandYoung gave birth]] to Dragon Orphans that rapidly evolved into modern Ghouls]].
* FantasticRacism: Ghouls are the subject of considerable racism, including the Ghoul Countermeasure laws that make their very existence a capital offense. In turn, some Ghouls view themselves as superior species and look down on humans as inferior creatures that exist as food or amusement for them.
** Playing with the justification of this for drama gives the series its primary moral/conflict. Humans are understandably terrified of ghouls, but the question is constantly raised of whether this justifies killing them all in the name of human security.
* FatalFlaw: Ghouls are really bad at joining together for a common goal and can be viciously territorial. This is partially because having too many of them in a group tends to make them stand out, as well as their ElementalRockPaperScissors kagune makes them reluctant to trust each other. As a result CCG-Ghoul battles generally have ghouls outnumbered 7 to 1. The Aogiri organization was created to avert this but their SocialDarwinist nature and loose restraint on their more AxCrazy members cause them to be attacked by other ghouls almost as much as by the CCG. When ghouls fight, and they often do, they tend to do it for keeps.
* FeatherFlechettes: The Ukaku type sprouts what looks like wings, and can fire off "feather" darts to attack from a distance.
* GameFace: When revealing their true nature, their eyes become red with black sclera.
* HealingFactor: All Ghouls possess one, allowing them to heal from injuries that would prove fatal to a human. Multiple Ghouls have been shown to be able to regrow limbs, while the Rinkaku-type is noted for having the strongest healing ability allowing them to mend injuries within seconds.
* HeroicResolve: Where idealism or kindness motivates a Ghoul to action, Ghouls realize that standing by and doing nothing makes them [[MurderByInaction feel guilty about what happens when they didn't intervene.]]
* HorrorHunger: They can only feed on [[ImAHumanitarian human flesh]] or [[MonstrousCannibalism that of other ghouls]]. A starved Ghoul is even more dangerous than usual despite being weaker because their hunger can override reason, conscience and rationality.
* HumanSubspecies: While the exact origins of the species are unknown, something Touka states she would like to study in the future, Ghouls are so closely related to humans that both organ transplants and interspecies reproduction between the two are possible.
* HyperactiveMetabolism: A Ghoul who hasn't eaten in a while is weak, has a harder time concealing their nature, can't heal their injuries and might be unable to use their kagune. But all it takes is ''a single bite'' to get them immediately fighting fit, at least for a short time.
* ImAHumanitarian: Ghouls naturally prey on humans.
* InASingleBound: Ghoul agility is such that many are capable of leaping onto the second story of a building, or across roof-tops to get around quickly.
* InstantArmor: The rare Kakuja mutation, which results from extensive cannibalism. These Ghouls can grow a protective exoskeleton.
* LivingADoubleLife: Some Ghouls chose to live among human society, creating human identities and doing normal things like going to school or holding down jobs. Uta describes it as walking a tightrope, with the proverbial rope thinner the closer they are to humans -- while certainly dangerous for the humans they know, it's also dangerous for the Ghoul, who risks exposure and execution with every encounter.
* MasochistsMeal: All human foods, with the exceptions of water and coffee, tastes awful to them, and can even give them food poisoning if they ingest it.
* MonstrousCannibalism: It's noted that cannibalism isn't uncommon among Ghouls, particularly in the more violent Wards. Some Ghouls frown upon it, particularly because their flesh is described as "coarse" or "foul" compared to human flesh, while others take pleasure in preying on weaker Ghouls.
* MustHaveCaffeine: Coffee is the only human food Ghouls can digest, and as a result, many ''adore'' it.
* NaturalWeapon: All Ghouls have a specialized extra "limb" used for fighting or feeding, created from the unique organ located in their back. There are four primary types, with a rare mutation that can result in a specialized fifth kind.
* TheNoseKnows: A Ghoul's sense of smell is superior to a human, allowing them to track prey or identify another of their kind. Some, like Hinami, take it to extremes.
* OurGhoulsAreCreepier: These Ghouls are essentially super-humans with a HorrorHunger, with numerous traits in common with modern vampire myths.
* ParentalAbandonment: The ''vast'' majority of all Ghouls are orphaned during their childhood, and forced to survive on their own.
* RedBaron: The [=CCG=] assigns aliases to Ghouls, with some [[AppropriatedAppellation happily adopting them with pride]].
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Their irises become bright red when they reveal their true nature.
* SecretIdentity: Ghouls are almost without exception cautious about protecting their identities since CCG will quickly hunt down any Ghoul that has had their face exposed. Many wear masks and body-obscuring clothing while hunting, and are quick to kill anyone that discovers their true nature.
* SuperSpeed: Ghouls, in general, are capable of incredible feats of speed and agility. It varies greatly from individual to individual, with some barely above the human norm while the strongest Ukaku types can perform a FlashStep.
* SuperStrength: Ghouls are typically stronger than humans, with even weak ones capable of decapitating another Ghoul or smashing concrete with a single blow.
* SuperToughness: Ghoul bodies are extremely durable and are able to survive wounds that would otherwise be fatal for normal humans.
* SuperpowerfulGenetics: Although extremely rare, it's possible for two Ghouls with different Rc types to have a child that inherits the abilities of both.
* TailSlap: The Bikaku type grows a tail, considered the most [[JackOfAllStats balanced]] of the types.
* TaintedVeins: Raised, red veins sometimes appear at the outer corners of their eyes when showing their true nature.
* TheyLookJustLikeEveryoneElse: The most terrifying thing about Ghouls is that they look perfectly human, right up until they reveal their GameFace. It requires a lengthy investigation for the CCG to begin building a case against suspected Ghouls.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Human flesh and [[MustHaveCaffeine coffee]]. Some ghouls have a preferred victim type well -- Rize likes young and attractive men, Tsukiyama likes "exceptional" or "exotic" specimens, etc.

!Anteiku Café

[[folder:General]]
Anteiku Café is a quaint little cafe located in the 20th Ward, but actually an organization of Ghouls that control the ward and enforced peace there. Considered moderates or fence-sitters, they have kept the peace for the last decade and provide scavenged meat for those Ghouls unwilling or unable to hunt.
----
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: They are about as pro-human as a Ghoul can be, discouraging excessive hunting or attacks on [[HunterOfMonsters CCG]].
* MartialPacifist: The staff of Anteiku is a peaceful and friendly lot for the most point, but also some of the most powerful Ghouls in the 20th Ward.
* MonstersAnonymous: The café serves as a meeting place for the ward's Ghouls, where they exchange information or socialize safely with others of their kind.
* RetiredBadass: Excluding newcomers, everyone on staff is implied or explicitly stated to have been a powerful, dangerous ghoul before settling down. Of particular note are [[JapaneseDelinquent Renji]] [[BloodKnight Yomo]] and [[TheDreaded Enji Koma]].
** [[spoiler:Yoshimura himself was once quite a terror, albeit a long time ago]].
* VegetarianVampire: Yomo scavenges for suicide victims and other bodies, providing meat for the staff and weaker Ghouls that come to Anteiku for help.

A 17-year-old high school student Ghoul working in the local cafe, Anteiku. She is helping Kaneki understand what it means to be one and the thin line between humans and ghouls. She is fascinated by humans and longs to live a normal life among them as much as possible.
----
* ActionGirl: And how. Not only will she kick ass, but she won't hesitate to kill anyone who threatens her friends or risk revealing they're ghouls.
* AnimalMotifs: She is often associated with rabbits. She is also associated with birds due to her Ukaku Kagune which resembles a wing.
* AntiHero: She can be quite ruthless at times, but she is really just trying to protect the people she cares about.
* BeneathTheMask: She keeps up a mask of cold indifference or hostility, but is actually a very kind girl that longs for a normal life.
* BerserkButton:
** Making fun of her father, as Ayato found out.
** Never suggest that Ghouls are monsters in front of her. Kaneki doing this earned him a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown.
* BookDumb: Her grades aren't the best. Though it doesn't help that she never went to elementary school.
* BrokenBird: She had a difficult childhood, having lost her parents, been sold out to the [=CCG=] by a neighbor, and living on the streets before showing up at Anteiku. As a result, she initially has NoSympathy for Kaneki bemoaning how his transformation into a HalfHumanHybrid has ruined his life:
-->'''Touka''': Everything is 'terrible?' Don't make me laugh. So what about me…for me, it’s been terrible since I was born.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Ayato's Cain.
* CoolBigSis: Towards Hinami, whom she more or less acts as a guardian for. She tried to be one for her brother, Ayato, but it...[[CainAndAbel didn't work out]], suffice to say.
* CoolMask: Well, at least if you like rabbits.
* CurbStompBattle: She gave one hell of one to Tsukiyama.
** And suffered one to [[spoiler:Ayato]]
* DeathGlare: She's a master at these either for comedy or drama.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Her father, Arata was a kind and loving father, that tried to teach them the importance of living with humans. He was killed by the Doves. And her mother was killed in much the same way.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She is cold and rude to Kaneki at first. Actively trying to avoid him, but slowly warms up to him over time. [[spoiler:She even wants to go with him when he decides to leave after the Aogiri Arc but he encourages her to stay and take her entrance exams so that she can go on to college and keep leading a normal life.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: She crosses in the end of the first series as [[spoiler:Anteiku is torn down, she is forced to flee for her life and Kaneki is missing]].
* {{Determinator}}: Every one of her fights ends with her bloody. But she never gives up.
* TheDreaded: All Ghouls acknowledge how dangerous Touka is, and even Tsukiyama will admit how terrifying she can be at full power. Kureo Mado notes she could grow up to be as dangerous as the Owl.
* FlashStep: At full speed, she more or less teleports.
* FlechetteStorm: Her kagune's primary attack is firing off a massive amount of shards at her opponents.
* FragileSpeedster: Her type is noted to be exceptionally fast, but not very tough.
* FreakinessShame: When Nishiki's girlfriend Kimi sees Touka's kagune, she thinks Touka looks beautiful. Touka, who had just tried to kill Kimi because she knows they're ghouls, runs away wondering how a human could think a ghoul is beautiful.
* FriendToAllChildren: She is very kind to Hinami, acting like a kind big sister to her.
* GenreSavvy: She wears a wig and a hoodie when going after Investigators, helping to conceal her identity. She also knows how to spread false information to help throw them off Hinami's trial.
* GoodIsNotNice: As a member of Anteiku, she helps to encourage peaceful coexistence between Ghouls and Humans. However, she's still willing to kill when necessary and can be brutal to other Ghouls.
* HatesBeingAlone: Touka hates being alone. Having lost her family either by death or them leaving her, she dreads the idea of losing people close to her. As shown in a flashback, she was crying when Ayato left, wishing someone was with her.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: Her friend Yoriko thinks Kaneki is her boyfriend/the boy she likes when she sees them together. Touka is not amused.
--> '''Yoriko:''' ''(whisper)'' Go for it! ''(fist pump)''\
'''Touka:''' ''Whadya mean,'' go for it?!
* HeroicBSOD: Goes on a bad one when Kaneki is kidnapped by Aogiri Tree. And when Yomo [[spoiler:prevents her from fighting in the final battle]].
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Her and Yoriko. She would even eat Yoriko's food despite it being bad for her.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: Her bangs typically conceal her right eye, visually signifying she is an individual who has something to hide.
* HotBlooded: Her icy disposition belies a fierce temper and passionate heart. She's all smiles when dealing with customers at the café, but will quickly get annoyed and insult others who she cannot stand. Kaneki is on the receiving end of most of it. This facet of her personality is responsible for [[NiceJobBreakingItHero the final event that brought the doves over to the 20th ward.]]
* HypocriteHasAPoint: Touka berates and assaults Kaneki for his selfish actions, but conveniently chooses to ignore that her [[RevengeBeforeReason obsession with getting revenge]] on [[CreatureHunterOrganization the CCG]] for the deaths of Hinami's parents resulted in the organization turning their attentions to the 20th ward, eventually resulting in the destruction of Anteiku. While Touka's retribution against the CCG was personal and proven to be disastrous for Anteiku in the long run, she makes a valid point. After suffering a brutal defeat at Arima's hands, Kaneki admits to the fact that [[HatesBeingAlone he was really trying to protect himself from being alone]] after the death of his mother.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: She wants to experience everything in the human world like a normal girl, despite the threat of being revealed as a ghoul.
* IWillWaitForYou: After Kaneki refuses to let her come with him at the end of the Aogiri Arc, she decides to wait for his return to Anteiku, although she's deeply resented his drastic change of personality and how he left her behind. [[spoiler: At the end of the series, she's still waiting for him, even though there isn't an Anteiku to return to anymore and it's unclear whether Kaneki is still alive.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She is rude and aggressive to Kaneki at first, but was kind enough to stop Kaneki from eating Hide when strvation was affecting his reason.
* KickChick: Touka uses a lot of kicks in her fights.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: Touka's brother Ayato directly compares [[ShipTease Kaneki]] to their father, Arata.
* LivingADoubleLife: She chooses to live as close to a normal human life as possible, attending high school and making human friends. Uta describes this as a balancing act, with those living like Touka having an incredibly narrow rope to walk.
* MasochistsMeal: She regularly forces herself to eat Yoriko's cooking, and becomes sick as a result.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: She goes through this after killing Mado and seeing his wedding ring, as well as an innocent CCG Agent just to get to him.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: She allows her desire to avenge Hinami's parents to [[RevengeBeforeReason consume her]], leading to her killing Mado rather than letting the murder go to avoid attracting the CCG's attention. Touka's killing of Mado leads the CCG to investigate the 20th Ward, eventually leading to the destruction of Anteiku.
* NoSympathy: In the second episode, Kaneki is on the ground before her, tearfully begging her for help and bemoaning that his date with Rize has ruined his entire life. Touka nonchalantly agrees with that statement and tells him outright that she doesn't pity him -- largely because, as a born ghoul, her life has been as terrible as Kaneki's ''for its entirety'', and Kaneki chose to express this sentiment by saying he'd never be a "monster" like her.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Twice with Kaneki. First, when Touka lifts Kaneki's shirt to check his muscles after training, Uta just happens to walk in. The other time is when Yoriko finds Kaneki in Touka's apartment.
* OrphansOrdeal: Her mother died while she was still young, and one night her father was caught by Mado and Shinohara. Touka and Ayato spent several days alone in their apartment waiting for him to return, but eventually, a neighbor came to check on them. The old woman promptly betrayed them, calling in Investigators to kill them -- they escaped and spent the next several years living on the streets, becoming an infamous pair of violent Ghouls. Yoshimura eventually took her in and gave her a home.
* OutOfFocus: An [[TropesAreTools intentional example]]. Following the TimeSkip, Touka shows up far less, not only reflecting how she and Kaneki have grown distant with one another, but also how the worlds both of them live in are increasingly at odds with one another. Whereas Kaneki continues going deeper and deeper into the darkest fringes of ghoul society, Touka becomes more and more immersed in the human world, and as such her decreased screentime reflects Kaneki's mistaken belief that their lives are incompatible with each other's.
* PartingWordsRegret: Implied. [[spoiler: In their last conversation, Touka got into a fistfight with Kaneki and concluded by calling him "trash" and telling him to stay out of Anteiku. Soon afterward, Anteiku is raided by CCG and Kaneki is defeated by Arima with his ultimate fate ambiguous]].
* PetTheDog: She has several, but the first one is when she stops Kaneki from eating Hide in a fit of blind hunger, showing rather early on that she's a better person than she seems at first glance.
* PsychologicalProjection: Early on, Touka scathingly criticizes Kaneki for his refusal to eat human flesh, telling him that there's no place for someone who can't decide between being human or ghoul. Given that Touka herself is later shown to be very much immersed in the human world, one could easily interpret her words as a reflection of her own insecurity.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Delivers more than one to Kaneki over time, generally aimed at calling him out of his self-pity or self-destructive behavior. In the final one, she screams at him to stop acting like a TragicHero and deciding things for other people.
* RedBaron: "Rabbit."
* RevengeBeforeReason: She becomes fixated on avenging the death of Hinami's mother, rather than letting the murder go and avoid attracting the CCG's attention. Because of this, Touka is indirectly responsible for the CCG's raid on Anteiku, as her killing Mado caused them to turn their attention to the 20th ward.
* ShipTease: She has considerable hints of mutual affection with Kaneki, who she warms up to and begins to show great concern for. She is willing to abandon her efforts at a normal life for him, and during their time apart she dreams up multiple scenarios of what she would say to him.
* SheFu: Due to her Ghoul type, she is quick and agile, using a lot of kicks and flips when fighting.
* {{Shorttank}}: The tomboyish female lead who constantly gets angry at the main character, but likes rabbits.
* SirSwearsALot: Touka has a pretty filthy mouth, but usually for her enemies and [[{{Tsundere}} Kaneki]].
* SpeedBlitz: She's so fast she can carve up her opponent with dozens of cuts in the blink of an eye.
* StrongFamilyResemblance:
** We see that Touka looks just like a darker haired version of her mother.
** She looks just like her brother, Ayato. So much so that when Banjou first met her, he thought she was Ayato.
* SympatheticMurderer: Her first murder was in self defense [[spoiler:as a child]].
* TarotMotifs: II. ''The High Priestess''.
* TheseHandsHaveKilled: Touka has called herself a murderer that probably should die.
* TookALevelInKindness: At first, she's a very aggressive young woman finding it justified to murder any Dove to a woman that desires an understanding of the differences between ghouls and humans. She becomes much more calm-minded and open about her emotions. She also becomes far kinder and more compassionate, learning to drop her colder front, as Tsukiyama notes, mainly down to Kaneki's influence.
* TrainingFromHell: How she trained Kaneki, beating him up and even breaking his finger. She states she was trained the same way.
* {{Tsundere}}: She is typically brash, rude, and violent, demonstrated in her first encounter with Kaneki. However, she does warm up to people and she is shown to care about others such as Hinami and her human friend Yoriko. She even forces herself to eat the food Yoriko gives her because it makes her friend happy despite the fact that it tastes terrible to ghouls and even makes them ill.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Once Nishiki starts working at Anteiku, the two constantly bicker with each other. However, they're actually on the same page about a lot of things and will readily help each other out when necessary.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Due to a bird picking at her right eye when she was young, Touka ''hates'' birds.
* WingedHumanoid: Her kagune resembles an insect's wings, and is used for delivering quick slashes.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Touka has been on the losing end of a fight with Tsukiyama because she insisted on eating food Yoriko gave her, which affected her fighting abilities.
* YouKilledMyFather: Subverted. Touka had no idea when she fought and killed Kureo Mado that he was the Investigator who took down her father.

The owner and boss of the ghoul cafe, Anteiku. He is an advocate for peaceful relations between Humans and Ghouls and is noted for reforming many violent young Ghouls over the years. Though kind and wise, his long lifespan is evidence that he is an exceptionally powerful Ghoul. His past is shrouded in mystery, with many secrets that continue to haunt him.
----
* AnimalMotifs: The Owl, a bird typically associated with wisdom. [[spoiler: He is the second Owl, having impersonated the original to protect his child]].
* AnArmAndALeg: He mentions having lost an arm to Arima in the past, but has long since healed the injury. [[spoiler: Juuzou slices off his arm during the battle on the rooftop, though likewise it eventually regenerates]].
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler: In his youth, he was a brutal Ghoul that preyed on humans and Ghouls alike. He came to serve an organization that employed him as a "Cleaner", murdering humans and Ghouls that caused them problems. However, when his human lover turned out to be a reporter investigating the organization, he was forced to kill her and abandon their HalfHumanHybrid child in the 24th Ward. Since then, he has worked to reform other violent Ghouls and offer a peaceful alternative to killing humans. He even posed as the One-Eyed Owl in order to cover for his child]].
* BadassBoast: He gives a great one when [[spoiler:the CCG invade the 20th ward]]
-->"''...the act of taking is equally evil. From the moment we are born, we continue to take. Even from our own relatives who feed us, we take, living to the utmost, continuing to slaughter, kill, take. Life is constantly sin. Life is evil itself. We continue to do sinful things. I'm aware I am evil and so are you all. Now come kill me and I shall do the same!''"
* BigDamnHeroes: He jumped between [[spoiler:Yomo and Arima just when Airma was going to kill Yomo, many years ago]].
* BigGood: As the leader of Anteiku, he seeks to promote a more peaceful Ghoul society and co-existence with humans. He is noted to have taken over the 20th ward and divided territories between the Ghouls there, as well as his tendency to take violent Ghouls under his wing and rehabilitate them.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Unlike most Ukaku, his kagune take the form of a pair of massive blades sprouting from his shoulders.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: In his youth, Yoshimura was a ruthless killer who lived in solitude while cursing his fate. He then met Ukina, a kind human woman who managed to get close to him and she became the first person he let into his heart. When she found out he was a Ghoul, instead of getting scared Ukina accepted him and comforted him after realizing the lonely life he must have lead.
* CannibalismSuperpower: [[spoiler: In his youth, he devoured other Ghouls. As a result, he has developed a Kakukja-type kagune that provides him with armor]].
* CharacterDevelopment: Yoshimura was a heartless Ghoul till he met Ukina who was a human and she fully accepted him despite being a dangerous Ghoul. He even formed Anteiku and brought other ghouls to the ship and showed them the error of their ways and help them change.
* CoolOldGuy: He is the ever-wise, unflappable manager of Anteiku and makes a habit of taking wayward young Ghouls under his wing.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: [[spoiler: He left his [[HalfHumanHybrid half-human]] child in the 24th Ward, in a desperate attempt to protect it from the organization he once served. When they approach him and make it clear they're making him AnOfferYouCantRefuse, even after all these years he still refuses to give up his child to them]].
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Implied. The flashbacks and comments of several members of Anteiku (and Ayato) imply Yoshimura's tendency to take troubled, violent Ghouls under his proverbial wing involved beating them into submission before becoming a stern-but-kind grandfatherly figure to them.
* TheDreaded: To [=CCG=], at least. As his advanced age would imply, he is an incredibly powerful Ghoul and any Investigator that faces him in battle has good reason to be afraid.
* EyesAlwaysShut: He is almost always seen with his eyes shut. His Ghoul eyes are usually active anytime he does open his eyes.
* FateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler: He replaces Rize as the new donor for Dr. Kanou's experiments, an experience that left her a gibbering lunatic]].
* FlechetteStorm: As an Ukaku, his kagune can fire off shards. Unlike other Ukaku, ''his'' hit with the ballistic force of a shotgun blast.
* {{Foil}}: To Kureo Mado. Both are older and wiser mentors to the protagonist, and both men were changed by the death of the woman they loved. [[spoiler: Both also have a very significant daughter they are devoted to]]. While Mado's loss twists him into a cruel and hateful man, Yoshimura is changed for the better and wishes to honor his lost love by finding a peaceful way to live.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: His cafe is a peaceful haven that serves humans and Ghouls alike while providing a secondary service in the form of "cruelty free" human flesh for Ghouls.
* HurricaneOfPuns: The ''Oma-bien'' drama reveals he is a master of wordplay and puns.
* InterspeciesRomance: In his youth, he fell in love with a human woman [[spoiler:and fathered a HalfHumanHybrid in the process]].
* IWasQuiteALooker: The flashback to his youth shows that Kuzen was an incredibly handsome young man.
* TheLastDance: [[spoiler: After being visited by his old comrades from "V", and warned by Kaneki about the impending raid on Anteiku, he makes the decision to face them head-on. Unlike all previous battles he'd been involved in, he goes in without an ounce of mercy and is seen mowing down hysterical CCG mooks with his Kagune]].
* LightningBruiser: Perhaps the greatest example within the series. Being an Ukaku type, he has incredible speed and the ability to fire off projectiles with strength compared to a ''shotgun''. Unlike most Ukaku, though, he is also tough enough to face two Special Investigators with specialized S-class equipment without taking damage.
* LoveRedeems: His change from remorseless killer to the head of Anteiku started when he fell in love with a human woman.
* ManipulativeBastard: While Yoshimura is unquestionably a good man with good intentions, he has a habit of subtly prodding his younger staff into difficult situations, something Nishio calls out when he starts to work at Anteiku. He's particularly interested in Kaneki, and not just because Kaneki is a potential bridge between the worlds of humans and ghouls. [[spoiler:It's likely Yoshimura sees in Kaneki an echo of the child he was forced to leave behind, and the possibility that Kaneki might be able to reach out to her.]]
* MartialPacifist: He would rather avoid conflict as much as possible, and helps maintain the peace of the 20th Ward. But he's still an SSS-rated Ghoul, and when forced to act he is compared to a natural disaster.
* MonstersAnonymous: Anteiku has been set up as a haven for Ghouls that attempt to live peacefully with humans, providing food for those who cannot bring themselves to hunt.
* MookHorrorShow: Any time he actually fights, the narrative shifts to focus on the CCG Investigators as they desperately fight against a Ghoul of legendary strength. It is a powerful reminder that beneath his grandfatherly demeanor is a Ghoul of exceptional experience and strength, one that rarely needs to act to keep order in the Ward he oversees.
* TheMourningAfter: He loved his human lover Ukina dearly and was shattered when [[spoiler:he was forced to kill her under V's orders]]. Ukina's death was the catalyst for Yoshimura's change in personality as well as his inspiration to create Anteiku.
* OneManArmy: He is compared to an unstoppable force of nature, a single Ghoul that can bring both CCG and rival Ghoul Gangs to their knees.
* PapaWolf: Though forced to abandon his child, he remains fiercely devoted to keeping them safe through whatever means necessary. [[spoiler: This includes impersonating the Owl in order to carry out a third attack on CCG, and dooming Anteiku rather than give his child up to his former superiors]]. To a lesser degree, he is one to his followers/employees, only stepping out of his self-imposed retirement when they are in danger.
* ParentalSubstitute: How he acts toward the members of Anteiku, Touka even considered him a father figure.
* RedBaron: [[spoiler: Owl, though only because he impersonated his child to throw off the trail]].
* RetiredBadass: He has settled into a quiet life running his cafe, and managing the affairs of the 20th Ward with a gentle hand. He rarely has to exercise more than a stern presence.
* StarCrossedLovers: With Ukina. [[spoiler: When Ukina was exposed as a reporter investigating the organization he served, they forced him to kill her.]]
* SwallowedWhole: [[spoiler: His daughter does this to carry him to safety, and spits him up once she's escaped pursuit]].
* TallDarkAndHandsome: In his youth, he was a handsome and mysterious dark-haired man in a very nice suit.
* TakingTheHeat: [[spoiler: He posed as the One-Eyed Owl in order to protect her, carrying out an attack against CCG to throw his former superiors off her trail. Eventually, Kuroiwa and Shinohara realize that there are two Owls, though CCG sees them both are major targets]].
* TragicDream: [[spoiler: Just prior to the raid on Anteiku, he sadly notes that his dream won't come true after all. It's implied that it was as simple as wanting to share a cup of coffee with his beloved daughter -- saving an antique coffee cup for that very day]].
* TragicKeepsake: He keeps a pair of antique cups in the cafe, but never actually uses them. Instead, in the anime, he is seen drinking coffee alone with both cups set out as though waiting for company to arrive. [[spoiler: One is for Ukina, while the other is for Eto]].
* VegetarianVampire: Anteiku's food supply comes from scavenging dead humans, typically suicides from the nearby mountains.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: In his Kakuja form, his voice has a distorted and inhuman quality to it.

A young Ghoul who is a second year at Kamii University, and an upperclassman to Hide and Kaneki. Before the start of the series, his hunting territory was overtaken by Rize and his efforts to reclaim them place him at odds with Kaneki. He has a human girlfriend, and his devotion to her slowly leads him to change his ways.
----
* AlliterativeName: He adopts the name "Nishiki Nishio" after the death of his sister, using a blank [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koseki family registry]] their parents had saved for emergencies. She even points out that the name is a bit odd, but asks him to bear with it.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: Inverted. His eyes appear completely black at the moment when he realizes his feelings for Kimi.
* ButtMonkey: If he appears in an omake, he is certain to be the butt of at least one joke. Highlights include [[{{Troll}} Kaneki]] spreading a rumor he eats manure and starring as the Prince in Rapunzel, only to realize his princess is not Kimi, as he assumed, but... Shachi.
* CharacterDevelopment: He's introduced as a petty and selfish Ghoul who's willing to kill other Ghouls who simply interlope on territory he ''deems'' to be his, but has yet to actually (re)claim. He also nearly murders both Kaneki and his human best friend. Later on, he winds up realizing the error of his ways and joins the gang at the coffee shop.
* CharacterizationByAction: He's first glimpsed pushing his glasses up by the bridge, hinting that he's more dangerous than he seems.
* ChickMagnet: He's not unpopular with the ladies. (But it's obvious Kimi is the one for him.)
* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: Complains at length about being saved by Kaneki, making it clear this doesn't change things.
* CynicismCatalyst: He had an older sister who was basically his surrogate mother (what happened to their actual parents is unknown but unlikely to be pretty). She was killed after a human she trusted reported her as a ghoul. Nishio then killed the guy who reported her and decided never to trust anyone. That was until Kimi found out he's a ghoul after Kaneki injured him and she accepted and even offered to let him eat her, showing him that there are humans you can trust.
* {{Determinator}}: When his human girlfriend, Kimi, is kidnapped by Tsukiyama. Even starving and badly injured, he just won't give up no matter how much punishment he receives.
* FetishizedAbuser: Subverted. All evidence suggests he would be one, being a hostile and abrasive guy who treats everyone around him with disdain...but all that sarcasm and hostility melts away when he's with Kimi. Instead, he would do anything to protect her and even cherishes a tacky gift of matching bracelets simply because she gave it to him. He also has a very sad background, refusing to trust anyone after a human betrayed his beloved sister to her death.
* FireForgedFriends: He states that he owes Kaneki and has a debt to repay since he helped save Kimi.
* GoodWithNumbers: He's shown helping classmates with their math homework, easily working out the errors in his head.
* HeelFaceTurn: He eventually becomes one of Kaneki's allies, after receiving help from him.
* HeroicResolve: Every single time Tsukiyama threatens Kimi, he manages to find the strength to get back up.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: He enjoys being able to live like a human, attending college and spending time with his girlfriend. He really doesn't have any interest in getting involved in matters concerning other Ghouls, other than to defend his territory or loved ones.
* InterruptedIntimacy: Hide and Kaneki walk in on him during a very hot-and-heavy session with his girlfriend, who runs out shrieking. He later asks them (for Kimi) how much they actually saw.
* InterspeciesRomance: He has a human girlfriend, as evidenced when Kaneki and Hide walk in on them getting hot and heavy.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler: As he prepares to flee the 20th Ward and go into hiding, he states that he doesn't want Kimi to waste the rest of her life waiting for him]].
* JackOfAllStats: His kagune type is described as such, being far more balanced than the other types that specialize in either speed, strength, or regeneration.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's rude and condescending towards others, but he also genuinely loves Kimi to the point of starving rather than harming her. After Kaneki helps him, he returns the favor and feels the need to repay his debt.
* KickChick: A male variant of the trope, with a fighting style that focuses on kicks -- and focuses on his tight pants and long legs.
* LivingADoubleLife: Though a Ghoul, he lives most of his life like a human. Besides having a human girlfriend, he's a 2nd year Pharmacy student at Kamii University and is well-known around the school.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: He's this to his girlfriend Kimi. Meeting him gave her the will to live on after she lost her family.
* LoveRedeems: He risks everything to save Kimi, and gives up on hunting humans for her sake. That Kaneki helped save Kimi leads him to become an important ally, feeling indebted to him.
* TheMasqueradeWillKillYourDatingLife: [[spoiler: In light of [=CCG=] raiding Anteiku, he states his intentions to see Kimi one last time before disappearing. It isn't clear yet whether he'll actually go through with it, but staying with her certainly puts her life at risk if they're caught]].
* MasochistsMeal: Through him, Kaneki (and the audience) are introduced to the fact Ghouls can swallow human food safely as long as they throw it up soon afterward.
* NonhumanLoverReveal: He nearly attacks Kimi when she comes to check on him after he's inured by Kaneki, revealing himself as a Ghoul. He's unable to kill her, and she willingly keeps his secret.
* OptOut: [[spoiler: He is one of several members of Anteiku that flee in preparation for the CCG raid on the 20th Ward, and readily tells Kaneki he intends to save himself]].
* OrphansOrdeal: His parents died while he was young, leaving his older sister to raise him in poverty. Though she worked hard to provide for him, eventually she was killed as well. He was able to start a new, better life thanks to her savings, but was left deeply bitter.
* PsychologicalProjection: All that stuff he says to Kaneki about how great it must be to watch some trusting idiot lose hope when he turns on them? In hindsight, that's how he assumes the man who reported his sister to the CCG must have felt, and how Nishio felt when killing him.
* RestoredMyFaithInHumanity: As established under CynicismCatalyst above, he resolved never to trust anyone again after a human his sister trusted sold her out to the [=CCG=]. This lasted until his human girlfriend, Kimi, discovered he was a ghoul and not only accepted him but offered to let him eat her, showing him that some humans ''can'' be trusted.
* SirSwearsalot: He's prone to referring to others as "shitty", and gets called on his nasty mouth more than once.
* TheSixthRanger: He joins the crew at Anteiku long after the others, and remains somewhat abrasive towards the others even after settling in.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: He wears them, and is described by Itori as a "prodigy".
* SmugSnake: Had shades of this, before his HeelFaceTurn. He used to act like he was one of the strongest ghouls around, defending his territory by antagonizing everyone else, but as soon as Tsukiyama shows up and kidnaps his girlfriend you realize he's not all that. [[spoiler: Inverted and otherwise PlayedWith in the sequel,:RE, where he really is a high-level badass who happens to have been named... ''Orochi'' (Serpent) by the CCG.]]
* StarCrossedLovers: With Kimi. The forbidden nature of their relationship is explicitly discussed, as exposure means death for him and prison for her.
* StarterVillain: He's the first enemy Kaneki fights.
* TailSlap: His kagune resembles a blue glowing tail, and investigators discussing different Kagune types describe it as a "trump card".
* TeenGenius: Though he grew up with a spotty education, he's a brilliant student whom others come to for help with their assignments. He's a Chemistry major and does his own experiments in a personal lab.
* TroubledButCute: Noted even at school for his abrasive personality, though apparently quite popular with the ladies. Ironically, his nasty personality ''is'' how he behaves while passing himself off as human, rather than his true Ghoul personality. He's actually a decent guy under it all, though.
* TrrrillingRrrs: Done in the anime, while screaming at [[TheKlutz Roma]] for breaking dishes.
* {{Tsundere}}: Creator/ShintaroAsanuma, his voice actor, describes him as being one towards humanity.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: When he was very young, he hated having to kill humans in order to survive. His sister did all of the hunting for him.
* VanHelsingHateCrimes: He makes a joke about the heavy-handed tactics of CCG when [[spoiler: Anteiku is targeted for a major extermination campaign]].
-->'''Nishiki:''' The Doves are so childish, too. It's just a coffee shop...so what if some Ghouls are just brewing some coffee?
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Touka, once he starts working at Anteiku. They constantly bicker, but he shields her from an ambush by Ayato and even helps her prepare for the college entrance exams. They have a lot in common.

A stoic man that serves as Yoshimura's right-hand man, carrying out odd jobs for Anteiku. He was once a violent thug but has been reformed into a wise man of few words. Along with Touka, he provides guidance to Kaneki on life as a Ghoul and teaches him how to defend himself.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Birds, particularly carrion birds such as crows and ravens.
* ArchEnemy: Arima, the Investigator that killed his sister.
* BadassLongcoat: He wears a large coat, covering his massive frame from neck to shins.
* BigBrotherMentor: Is both the caretaker of his niece, Touka, and the one who teaches Kaneki how to fight. Interestingly enough, Yomo is also one of the few characters to actually refer to Kaneki by [[FirstNameBasis his given name]].
* CantHoldHisLiquor: An omake is centered around this, with Itori getting him plastered. He becomes exceptionally talkative.
* CoolMask: It resembles a gas mask with a long beak much like the masks worn by Plague Doctors.
* DueToTheDead: He briefly prays over the body of a suicide victim, prior to bagging it to take back to Anteiku.
* GoodHairEvilHair: Inverted, he has a goatee but is a good person.
* LightningBruiser: He's noted for his incredible durability and strength, but turns out to be a speed-based Ukaku type.
* NoSell: He doesn't even flinch when impaled through the stomach by Kaneki's CombatTentacles.
* NotSoStoic: There are moments when even he loses his cool, such as when he encounters Arima.
* NumberTwo: He acts as Yoshimura's second in command, carrying out duties behind the scenes for him.
* OrphansOrdeal: Like many Ghouls, he was orphaned young and raised by his older sister. Her death at the hands of Arima left him obsessed with revenge, having lost everything.
* PowerTrio: With Uta and Itori.
* TheQuietOne: He rarely speaks, even occasionally ignoring some of Kaneki's questions.
* RedBaron: "Raven", first coined by Uta.
* RetiredBadass: He and Uta made the 4th ward practically impossible to live in back when they were younger due to their fighting.
* ShoutOut: When wearing his mask and coat, he resembles a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plague_doctor_costume Plague Doctor]]. Fitting, considering his job "shopping" for food for Anteiku.
* TheBigGuy: A tall, broad man and the resident muscle for Anteiku.
* TheStoic: He is quiet and rarely shows strong emotion. Much of what [[CrapsackWorld occurs throughout the series]] rightfully horrifies, traumatizes and enrages his peers, but he usually keeps his composure under pressure.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Subverted. While he initially seems frightening and is the one that "shops" for Anteiku's food supply, he turns out to be a good person.
* WingedHumanoid: His Kagune resembles wings when in use, and coupled with his mask, make him look like a very angry bird.
* YouKilledMyFather: In his back story, his response to seeing Arima for the first time is to scream at him, demanding his sister back.
* ZenSurvivor: Straight answers from him are rare, but he quietly encourages Kaneki to find his own answers. He also offers lessons in survival and combat, primarily through either letting Kaneki fall off a cliff or beating him senseless.

A sweet little girl who comes under the care of Touka and Kaneki. Though a powerful Ghoul, she is gentle and kind-hearted. She is taken in by Kaneki's group after the TimeSkip, but usually confined to their apartment for her own safety. She forms an unlikely friendship with Tsukiyama, and occasionally uses her keen senses to help the group's efforts.
----
* BadassAdorable: She's actually a powerful Ghoul, being one of the rare cases where a child gets ''both'' kagune types from their parents.
* BreakTheCutie: Both of her parents are now dead and she watched her mother die. She's holding up quite well considering the events that happened, but she's definitely not the same anymore.
* ButterflyOfDeathAndRebirth: Hinami's kagune resemble a butterfly's wings, and emerge for the first time shortly before the death of Kureo Mado -- a turning point for several characters in the series.
* CombatTentacles: They look a bit like a Scorpion's tail.
* ImportantHaircut: She got a trim and ditched her bangs after the demise of Kureo Mado and overcoming the loss of her parents, showing how she matured from a timid girl into a more confident woman.
* MissionControl: She coordinates the efforts to capture Madam A, helping Kaneki's group corner her.
* NiceGirl: She's very sweet and friendly, and hasn't killed any humans.
* NightmareFetishist: An innocent version of the trope. Sweet, gentle Hinami really loves horror movies and her favorite author, Takatsuki Sen, writes novels about human cruelty and madness.
* OddFriendship: With Tsukiyama, of all people.
* OlderThanTheyLook: She's 14, but looks much younger and is tiny compared to the other characters.
* OrphansOrdeal: She witnesses her mother's death, and is hunted and tormented by Mado. Though she has the support of Anteiku to help her heal, the loss of her parents clearly leaves her haunted.
* PrecociousCrush: The anime adaptation may imply this, with her beginning to ask questions about romance and love.
* PuppyLove: The 5th chapter of ''Tokyo Ghoul:Days'' focuses on this, between Hinami and a human boy. He turns out to be the son of an investigator but ends up deciding to keep her secret.
* RevengeBeforeReason: Completely and gloriously [[DefiedTrope defied.]] Though she has every reason to be distraught over the loss of her parents, her friends expect to want payback, and spends several days bawling uncontrollably from the resulting pain and loneliness, she loves the memory of them so much that she doesn't want revenge -- she just ''misses'' them. Ironically, that opens the door for her to avenge them as if she earned her right to justice by having such a good heart.
* SensorCharacter: She begins learning to use her senses this way, under Irimi's guidance.
* ShipperOnDeck: Implied. When Kaneki disbands his group, she states that she believes Kaneki and Touka should be together at Anteiku. She's one of several characters to push the two toward each other.
* SunnySunflowerDisposition: She's heavily associated with Sunflowers, even wearing them on her clothing. And regardless of the terrible circumstances, she's endured in life, she remains sweet and cheerful.
* SuperSenses: She's noted to have exceptional senses, even by Ghoul standards. Unlike most Ghouls, she recognizes that Kaneki's scent is strange and her hearing is good enough to detect what is going on elsewhere in a large building.
* SwordOverHead: After badly injuring Mado, she ultimately decides not to avenge her parents by killing him.
* TenderTears: She becomes ''very'' weepy after being orphaned, spending several days on end locked in her room and dribbling tears as she mourns over drawings of her mom and dad. It isn't until she discovers an injured bird that the tears finally go away, because it makes her realize that there are others out there hurting and abandoned just like her and they need someone to care for them as well.
* TraumaCongaLine: She loses her father, followed by her mother, sees a Dove using her father's and mother's stolen kagune as weapons against Ghouls, nearly gets killed, and soon finds herself mixed up in all of the dark conspiracies Kaneki and co are pulled into.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: In the anime, her excitement at catching her father's scent results in her running straight into a trap.
* WingedHumanoid: Her second kagune resembles a moth's wings, though they aren't wings so much as large shields for defense.
* WiseBeyondHerYears: She shows occasional glimpses of wisdom, realizing that revenge won't change anything and later recognizing that Kaneki was not well after his ordeal.

An experienced waiter at Anteiku, frequently acting as manager when Yoshimura is not in. Though he looks harmless, in truth he was once the leader of a violent gang and was called the "Devil Ape".
----
* AlmightyJanitor: The dude typically left to cleaning duty is in fact one of the most powerful Ghouls in the series.
* AnimalMotifs: Great Apes.
* TheAtoner: Yomo hints that this is the reason he chooses to remain at Yoshimura's side.
%%* BacktoBackBadasses: With Irimi.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Don't let his looks and kind attitude fool you. When he actually does get serious, he's a force to be reckoned with.
* BigBrotherMentor: He views himself as being this to the younger employees of Anteiku, though it's questionable whether or not they agree.
* BloodKnight: As the Devil Ape, he enjoyed hunting down strong Investigators for the challenge.
* BolivianArmyEnding: [[spoiler: He's last seen heavily wounded and among those evacuating through the V-14 tunnels. Later, Kaneki finds Arima waiting in an area strewn with the bodies of the Ghouls trying to flee... it's revealed in '':re'' that he survived]].
* CoolMask: A stylized, Gorilla mask with enormous lower teeth.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He's usually goofy and friendly, and the younger staff don't take him very seriously, but in his "Devil Ape" persona he is a terrifying and brutal opponent.
* DeathSeeker: Yomo suggests that he goes into battle fully intending to die as a "punishment" for his past.
* TheDreaded: In his youth, he was quite feared by CCG, and for good reason. His return in the final arc causes the troops that recognize him to shake in terror.
* FacelessGoons: "En", his old gang. [[spoiler: They come out of retirement to fight during the raid on Anteiku]].
* GagNose: His nose is enormous and goofy-looking, adding to his harmless appearance.
* TheLastDance: [[spoiler: He comes out of retirement during the raid on Anteiku, fully intending to go down fighting]].
* LightningBruiser: When he does step up to fight, he shows exceptional speed and strength as well as endurance.
* MagneticHero: In his youth, he was considered unusual for his ability to unite so many powerful Ghouls under his leadership. Unlike most gang leaders, he did this through charisma and personality rather than fear or force.
* MilesGloriosus: Subverted. He would frequently brag about his prowess as the great "Devil Ape", and get shrugged off by the younger employees at Anteiku. But when he actually goes into battle, it becomes clear it wasn't just talk.
* MundaneObjectAmazement: When he first started working at Anteiku, he was utterly in awe of the ''great power of baking soda''.
* NoRespectGuy: His younger coworkers tend to brush off any mention of him being anything but a goofy waiter, and outright ignore him when he tries to assert authority.
* PrehensileTail: He uses his kagune at one point to swing himself out of harm's way, suggesting he's a Bikaku-type, which suits his alias.
* RedBaron: "Devil Ape", a title he held in his more violent youth.
* ReformedCriminal: A former Gang Leader, he was responsible for killing Doves in multiple Wards. Yoshimura eventually reformed him, leading him to settle down as a waiter in a café.
* TheReliableOne: He is left in charge of Anteiku whenever Yoshimura is out.
* RetiredBadass: He was once an infamous ghoul and leader of a dangerous gang prior to being taken under Yoshimura's wing.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He likes to brag about his prowess as a RetiredBadass, even though none of the employees of Anteiku have ever heard of him and generally ignore him. But it turns out to be Subverted: he's merely been in retirement for long enough for the teenage Ghouls to not know about him, but the Doves ''immediately'' recognize and get scared the moment they see him.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Yoshimura, who rehabilitated him and gave him a new start in life.

One of the waitresses at Anteiku, a quiet and reserved woman with a violent past. She was the leader of the gang ''Black Dobers'' prior to encountering Yoshimura, and was rehabilitated by him.
----
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She's rather quiet and quite lovely in a composed and mature fashion.
* TheAtoner: Yomo hints that this is the reason she chooses to remain at Yoshimura's side.
* ArchEnemy: To Hachikawa, for killing his teacher and fellow investigators a decade ago.
%%* BackToBackBadasses: With Koma.
* BewareTheQuietOnes: Though she is soft-spoken and polite, she's also a SS-ranked Ghoul.

* DeathSeeker: Hinted to be fully intending to die in battle, as "punishment" for her past. Further supported by the fact that the cover page featuring her on Chapter 131 has her in a simple white outfit with her shoes taken off, which is a sign of intending to commit suicide in Japan.
* TheDreaded: Black Dog killed many Investigators in the past, and is rightly feared as a result.

* FragileSpeedster: She's an Ukaku, with incredible speed and agility. However, once she's ''actually'' hit, she goes down quickly.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler: Stabbed through by investigators and heavily slashed by Take's quinque several times, leaving her badly wounded]].

* MissionControl: During the rescue mission, she uses her SuperSenses to coordinate the various groups.
* RedBaron: "Black Dog".
* ReformedCriminal: As the leader of ''Black Dober'', she was an infamous Ghoul that killed quite a few Doves. Then Yoshimura took her under his wing, reforming her into the mild-mannered waitress most people know.
* RetiredBadass: She earned an SS-rank and led the ''Black Dober'' gang prior to being recruited by Yoshimura.
* SeeYouInHell: Said word for word to Hachikawa when she is defeated by Hirako's team.
* SensorCharacter: Using her incredibly keen senses, she can track the movements of multiple forces through Aogiri's stronghold -- a sprawling complex with multiple buildings with several stories each.
* SuperSenses: Her senses are far beyond even those of other Ghouls, allowing her to track a battle in a different area of a building based solely on vibrations.
* SuperSpeed: As an Ukaku, her fighting style is centered around her incredible speed. She's shown to be able to move at inhuman speed, dodging gunfire and taking out several opponents in the blink of an eye.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler: When the Investigator she was fighting disregards the safety of an elderly (human) woman caught in the crossfire, Irimi throws herself in the way and takes the hit]].

A young man with an eccentric personality and taste to match it. He is known as the Gourmet and models his feeding off high-class dining with a focus on "interesting" or unique victims. After meeting Kaneki, he becomes obsessed with him.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: A male variant of the trope, with Kaneki as the object of his unwanted attention. His obsession begins because of Kaneki's "intoxicating" scent and only increases after he realizes that Kaneki is a HalfHumanHybrid. While his intentions are to eat the object of his interest, Tsukiyama goes through all the expected motions of courting. He's particularly delighted with Kaneki's transformation into a ruthless AntiHero, with the lines between murderous intentions and romantic interest further blurring.
* ActionFashionista: He has an endless supply of designer clothing, which he wears into combat without concern for it being damaged by his kagune or stained in blood.
* AffectionateNickname: Hinami calls him "Flower Man" in side material.
* AgentPeacock: He may look like a ridiculous fop, but don't be fooled -- he's one of the most influential and physically dangerous ghouls in Ward 20.
* AManOfWealthAndTaste: He zigzags between this and a FashionVictimVillain, depending on what he's wearing. But at his finest, he's dressed in designer suits and enjoys having his victims prepared as though it were a five-star restaurant.
* AnArmAndALeg: His right arm is sliced off by Touka, but he (obviously) regenerates it by the time Yoshimura recruits him to help rescue Kaneki.
* AngstComa: [[spoiler: After failing to prevent Kaneki from going to his apparent death, he is seen laying there listlessly while Nishiki watches over him]].
* ArcVillain: Of the Gourmet arc.
* {{Autocannibalism}}: This is how he survives his battle with Kaneki and Touka. While they think that they left him for dead, Tsukiyama in fact ate his own flesh in order to regain the strength to leave the church. He notes that he tastes delicious.
* BadassBookworm: His passion for literature and music is matched only by his reputation as a dangerous Ghoul.
* TheBeautifulElite: Regardless of his questionable fashion sense, Kaneki's first impression of him is that he looks like a model.
* BecomingTheMask: He initially joins Kaneki with the intention of earning his trust, all so he can groom him into the ultimate meal. However, over the course of the months spent working together, his devotion becomes genuine.
* BigFancyHouse: He mentions that his bedroom as a child was ''70 square meters'' large. Another glimpse of his parents' manor shows a multi-story library.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: His kagune is wielded like this, with it typically wrapping around his arm so he can use it like a sword.
* BloodKnight: Among Ghouls, he's rather infamous for his enjoyment of a good fight. In the past, he intentionally sought out the Kirishima siblings to fight them and is delighted whenever he encounters a strong opponent.
* BrokenTears: [[spoiler: When his efforts to physically stop Kaneki from heading to Anteiku during the CCG raid fail, he begs Kaneki to not go while weeping]].
* {{Camp}}: He is prone to posing dramatically and making over-the-top displays, which at first indicates his unstable personality. After his HeelFaceTurn, it's primarily used for the purpose of comedy.
* CampyCombat: A foppy young man dressed in designer suits with a tendency to make dramatic displays and an obsession for Kaneki that blurs the line between hunger and sexual desire. He wraps his bright purple kagune around his arm as a spiraling ribbon to fight, using it as a blade in a manner similar to fencing.
* CantHoldHisLiquor: The second story in the ''Oma-bien'' drama cd centers around him getting plastered with fellow light-weight Yomo. Hilarity Ensues.
* CharacterDevelopment: He begins the series as a completely self-centered and hedonistic individual. Over the course of the months spent working with Kaneki's group, however, he becomes ''slightly'' more mature and begins to care about more than just himself.
* CharacterExaggeration: In ''√A'', his {{Camp}} tendencies are played up to the extreme while removing much of the CharacterDevelopment of his manga counterpart.
* ChildEater: Subverted. He actually considers the elderly an exceptional and rare treat, especially old men.
* CombatPragmatist: He proposed an alliance with Naki when the Doves arrived at the lab but secretly plans to finish him off once he's exhausted.
* CommonalityConnection: With Chie, his human friend/"pet". Their friendship seems to be based on both being completely nuts, and obsessed with the ultimate experience of their chosen interests. Food for him, photography for her.
* CoolMask: A crescent moon-shaped mask, themed after the Man in the Moon.
* CrazyJealousGuy: He considers anyone attempting to eat or otherwise harm Kaneki to be a serious offense, flying into a rage.
* DemotedToExtra: In ''√A'', with his role downgraded significantly.
* DepravedBisexual: Played with. While his interest in his targets appears to be sexual, it's only to the extent of valuing them as food. Kaneki seems to be the main target of his unwanted affection although he has shown interest in Touka and Kimi as well.
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler: Kaneki's apparent death, which leaves him non-functional and apparently under Nishiki's care]].
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Nobody will blame you for seeing some homoerotic undertones in his behavior and how he gets close to Kaneki. There's also his rather blatant victim blaming of Kaneki, claiming that everything is his fault for being too irresistible; this is the same sort of logic rapists and rape apologists use.
* EasilyForgiven: Zigzagged. At first, it seems his past is readily forgiven by Kaneki...until he makes it clear that Tsukiyama will die if he steps out of line. Meanwhile, Touka and Nishiki continue to nurse grudges against him and warn Hinami about associating with the likes of Tsukiyama. [[spoiler: When Kaneki disbands his group, he refuses Tsukiyama's request to continue following him, stating that he does not trust him but he's a useful ally]].
* EnfantTerrible: In the Novels, he's described as having been one.
* EvilLaugh: During his fight against Kaneki and Touka he gave some laughter of enjoyment, complimenting his unhinged persona.
* EyeScream: His introduction involves him tearing out a woman's eyes because he liked their color, and having them sauteed for his consumption. Later, he becomes the victim of this trope when Touka ambushes him and slashes him across the face taking out both his eyes in the process.
* FalselyReformedVillain: When Touka and Nishiki confront him in front of Hinami, he pretends to be shocked by their accusations and insists he has changed his ways. Of course, not long before that, he'd been in the bathroom sniffing the handkerchief stained with Kaneki's blood while thinking about eating him.
* FingerTwitchingRevival: Chapter 46 concludes with two panels focused on his hand, and his fingers twitching slightly. It isn't until the Anteiku rescue team is put together that his survival is revealed.
* FlayingAlive: In the first novel, he peels the skin of an elderly victim and eats it. This victim ''would'' have survived, if not for the BattleaxeNurse that finishes him off. The second novel reveals that Tsukiyama later did the [[RewardedAsATraitorDeserves same thing]] to ''her'', killing her in the process. Other Ghouls gossip about this in disgust.
* FlowersOfRomance: He brings bouquets of flowers to Kaneki's apartment, as one of his many efforts to earn his favor. Hinami affectionately dubs him "Flower Man", as a result.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Banjou and his followers openly dislike him, and Kaneki often keeps him at arm's length. Several omakes deal with how the group excludes him from social activities, and only Hinami seems to enjoy his company.
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: Loves to use [[GratuitousFrench French]], [[GratuitousItalian Italian]] AND [[GratuitousEnglish English]], especially when he's... excited.
* GroinAttack: In Chapter 20, his Wanted Poster is seen outside of CCG's 20th Ward branch. It mentions the murder and mutilation of a City Councilman at the hands of the Gourmet Ghoul. The particular body part taken in that case? The Councilman's ''genitals''.
* TheHedonist: He surrounds himself with the finest things in life, and is obsessed with experiencing the most unique and pleasing flavors. Classical music, fine literature, beautiful flowers, interesting people, and designer clothing are all things he savors.
* HeelFaceTurn: Played with. He agrees to participate in the mission to rescue Kaneki, and offers to become the "Sword" of Kaneki's group when he leaves Anteiku. However, it's entirely for the chance to remain close to him and eat him when the opportunity arises. [[spoiler: However, by the end, he's genuinely come to care for Kaneki as more than simply a potential meal]].
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Because he is obsessed with Kaneki, he becomes instantly distracted from his surroundings when he sees Touka bite the other. His clothing also turns out to be impractical for combat since Nishio grabs onto his tie and holds him in place long enough for Touka to take out Tsukiyama's face and arm.
* InLoveWithTheMark: Initially, he got close to Kaneki for the purpose of eventually serving him for dinner. But by the finale, his feelings have changed even if he doesn't seem to understand them. His character profile in Pash Magazine even explicitly states that he loves Kaneki, putting aside any ambiguity concerning things.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: His obsession with Kaneki grows after the Aogiri arc once Kaneki becomes even more deadly and cold-hearted. He is delighted when Kaneki issues him a death threat.
* InVinoVeritas: In the ''Oma-bien'' drama, while drunk Tsukiyama rants about preparing Kaneki as the ultimate meal...before rambling incoherently about how Kaneki is "different" and "amazingly incredible".
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: In a show where the strange intimacy of cannibalism is repeatedly drawn attention to, this guy proceeds to completely dispense with the subtlety. His attempts to groom Kaneki to be the perfect meal and his delighted anticipation of that moment (complete with PervertedSniffing of a stolen handkerchief) read more like something out of [[Literature/{{Lolita}} Humbert Humbert]]'s playbook than [[Literature/TheSilenceOfTheLambs Hannibal Lecter]]'s.
* InterspeciesFriendship: One of the side novels reveals the "Chie" he mentions is actually a human girl he befriended in High School after she photographed him feeding. He seems to consider her a particularly [[HumanPet charming pet]], but she disagrees and seems to be one of the few people capable of putting him in his place.
* JustJokingJustification: He frequently tries to cover up his actions by claiming them to be poor jokes, such as the incident at the Ghoul Restaurant or threatening to kill the Gas-mask trio.
* KindHeartedCatLover: He's hinted to be extremely fond of cats. A piece of bonus art features Chie tricking him by playing a video of a cat -- Tsukiyama comes running, carrying an armful of cat toys. [[{{Narcissist}} Though calling him kindhearted would be a stretch]].
* LargeHam: He is melodramatic to the extreme, shouting foreign words and posing bizarrely as though an actor on the stage.
* LickedByTheDog: He attempts to cultivate this trope by befriending Hinami, as one more way to get close to Kaneki. But it actually serves to hint that he's BecomingTheMask, though he doesn't realize it until it's too late. [[spoiler: The next time we see him, he's desperately trying to keep Kaneki from going off to his certain death and falls into an AngstComa after failing]].
* LivingADoubleLife: When he isn't stalking victims as The Gourmet (or just plain stalking Kaneki), he's a 4th Year student majoring in Social Work.
* MealTicket: In the side novels, Chie teases him about using wealth to earn Kaneki's trust, comparing him to a DirtyOldMan trying to charm a [[HostClub Hostess]] with money. He doesn't deny it.
* MrFanservice: Parodied in an omake, with him posing in progressively sexier poses with less and less clothing. When asked what he's doing, he explains he's going to be featured on the next volume's cover. (The photographer, meanwhile, is taking a picture of his crotch.)
* {{Narcissist}}: He is incredibly self-absorbed and arrogant but also very obsessed with appearances. He disliked Rize for the fact that she didn't care about the appearance or quality of her meals and that she indiscriminately ate humans.
* NoSocialSkills: Later in the series, he's shown to be very awkward when trying to be genuine and become closer to the other members of the group. He comes across as ''painfully'' awkward and eager to please, as well as clueless about how his wealthy upbringing compares to how normal people live.
* ObsessedWithFood: He is obsessed with fine dining and finding the right "parts" to turn into meals. In his first appearance in the manga, we see him steal a woman's eyes to turn into a meal because he thought they were beautiful. He also participates in an underground restaurant that lures humans to become entertainment and food for ghouls.
* OddFriendship: He seems to ''only'' have these since his closest friends are the human Chie Hori and sweet, innocent Hinami.
* OldMoney: He belongs to an extremely wealthy and influential family that owns an Import/Export business, with strong political ties within the Ghoul world as well as the Human one.
* PervertedSniffing: He has a handkerchief with Kaneki's blood on it and seems to enjoy the taste and smell of it a little too much... We later see that he keeps it inside a plastic bag to preserve the scent and seems to periodically be smelling it because it's as close to eating Kaneki as he's going to get.
* PickyPeopleEater: He only takes the eyes of a beautiful young woman after complimenting them. This also serves to contrast him with Rize. While Rize will eat mostly anything, Tsukiyama will only eat specific people. His obsession with Kaneki comes from the way the other smells and the rarity of being a one-eyed ghoul. Their differences are also why Tsukiyama actually disliked Rize despite giving Kaneki the impression that they were friends.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: [[spoiler: After being soundly beaten by Kaneki, Tsukiyama gives one last desperate plea for him to not go off to his certain death]]. It doesn't work.
* PrettyBoy: He's extremely pretty and well-dressed, playing up his good looks with fashionable clothing and a stylish haircut.
* PrincelyYoungMan: In sharp contrast to the other characters, he's the son of an extremely wealthy family and comes across as a SpoiledBrat used to getting whatever he wants. In school, he was fawned over by his classmates because of his wealth and social status.
* PsychopathicManchild: He acts very mature most of the time and seems to have very high-class tastes. However, he also is prone to fits of anger and jealousy. He throws tantrums such as during his fight with Touka in which he loses it when she takes a bite out of Kaneki. He starts screaming at her that Kaneki belongs to him. He can be childish and unreasonable when he doesn't get what he wants.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: A variation of this. He joins a rescue mission to save Kaneki during the Aogiri Arc not because he cares about the other, but because he still seeks to devour him.
* RedBaron: The Gourmet, a title earned due to his dining habits. Within the Ghoul Restaurant, he was known as "MM".
* SchoolIdol: He was one in High School, adored as the handsome, academically and athletically gifted son of a distinguished family.
* SerialKiller: He is the Ghoul equivalent of one, with such strong patterns and preferred types of victims that Investigators are able to figure out several key pieces of evidence simply because he'd changed his strongly ingrained habits.
* ShoutOut: He quotes [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Anthelme_Brillat-Savarin Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin]] more than once.
* SissyVillain: Apart from the tiny detail that he wants to fillet Kaneki rather than bone him, he's a walking CampGay stereotype.
* StalkerWithACrush: He randomly shows up at Kaneki's school in order to have a chance to talk to him privately and ''smells the handkerchief with his blood''. After the Aogiri Arc, he swears loyalty to Kaneki in order to remain close to him in hopes of grooming him into the perfect meal.
* StarterVillain: In the anime, where he’s fought before Kureo and is the first major villain.
* TarotMotifs: XVIII. ''The Moon''
** Chapter 128 adds VI. ''The Lovers'', appearing three times in the same scene.
* TheTeamBenefactor: He finances the group, and uses personal or family connections to aid them.
* TokenEvilTeammate: After the Aogiri Arc, he becomes this to Kaneki's group. He's allowed to remain due to being so useful, but not trusted and is kept outside their "family" since the only thing he considers is Kaneki's safety. This is, of course, because he remains focused on eventually eating Kaneki and is only kept in line by Kaneki threatening him.
* UpperClassTwit: Inverted. Tsukiyama's eccentric behavior makes him seem like one to other Ghouls, but within Human society, he is considered exceptionally gifted. Besides standing out for his academic accomplishments, he's well-read and a classically trained pianist -- he's also a Social Welfare Major and has expressed interest in working in a hospital as opposed to simply living off his family's money.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Affection is something that Tsukiyama has trouble comprehending, often giving it a different label for lack of understanding. He refers to his best friend, Chie, as a "pet" because he's unable to comprehend his affection towards a human and continues to think of Kaneki as simply a meal long after his feelings have become more complicated. He also mistakes Nishiki's desperation to save Kimi for a mere dispute over a meal, and can't understand the other man's willingness to risk everything for a mere human.
* WickedCultured: He seems to be able to speak multiple languages or at least know phrases in other languages. He shares a strong interest in literature with Kaneki and Rize and knows a lot about high-class culture. Rize calls him out on this. She finds it amusing that all these things and his obsession with the taste of his food make it seem like he's trying to act like a human rather than a ghoul. This is what really makes him start to hate her despite wanting her to become a part of his dining club.
%%* WouldHitAGirl: Would murder and eat, yeah.
* WorthyOpponent: He pretends to extend this towards Naki, who in turn considers him a "decent guy".
* {{Yandere}}: Toward Kaneki, in a violent obsession that blurs the lines between amorous and murderous intentions. He becomes violently jealous when Touka eats a small piece of flesh from Kaneki and later decides to swear loyalty to Kaneki as his "Sword" so that he can remain at his side. When the Gas-mask Trio ask him to help them search for Banjou, instead of Kaneki, he comes within moments of turning on them for (in his mind) putting Kaneki in danger.

A ghoul from the 11th Ward, and former associate of Rize. He comes to the 20th Ward in search of her and has lingering feelings for her. Though a pacifist, he has a strong sense of duty and becomes one of Kaneki's allies.
----
* AmazonChaser: Attracted to Rize's independence and strength.
* BookDumb: He's illiterate, even as an adult. Probably justified, since many Ghouls grow up without attending school or otherwise obtaining a formal education.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: He looks tough, but he's actually a caring and peaceful guy.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: He tends to throw himself into harm's way for others, shielding them from attacks or attempting a HeroicSacrifice to let others escape.
* CoolDownHug: He manages to talk down a berserk Kaneki, placing one hand on his shoulder and giving him a YouAreNotAlone speech to bring him back to his senses.
* CowardlyLion: He's noted for being the biggest chicken around, frightened by Ghost stories and horror movies that he watches with Hinami. But when it comes to the people he cares about, he'll leap into the fray without a second thought.
* DemotedToExtra: He becomes a very minor character in the anime after the Aogiri arc, as opposed to becoming Kaneki's Lancer.
* DoggedNiceGuy: He is arguably one of the nicest ghouls in the series. He is also hopelessly in love with Rize, who doesn't care about him at all.
* TheDulcineaEffect: He puts himself at risk by going to the 20th Ward to warn Rize that she might be in danger despite the fact that he hardly knows her and it's very clear that she won't return his affection. It's also clear that Rize is incredibly selfish and doesn't care about how her actions affect others. It becomes apparent that Banjou has an idealized image of her.
* FragileSpeedster: Subverted. He turns out to be an Ukaku-type, which are noted for their speed and lack of endurance. Banjou, on the other hand, is slow and clumsy but his large body is fairly durable. The Gas-Mask Trio immediately mocks him upon seeing his kagune for the first time.
* GentleGiant: He's tall and heavily built, and as a result looks pretty intimidating. But in reality, he's as much of a pacifist as possible for a Ghoul and incredibly soft-hearted.
* HealingFactor: Unlike most Ghouls, his Kagune seems to be used exclusively to heal his injuries.
* TheHeart: His kindness and caring nature are his defining trait in any group he joins.
* HeroicSacrifice: Attempted when he threw himself between Kouto and one of the Bin Brothers and then forced the rest of the Anti-Aogiri group to leave. He survived because Kaneki and the gas mask brothers came back for him.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Banjou is really hard on himself for being weak.
* HonorBeforeReason: Regardless of his weakness and peaceful nature, he readily places himself in harm's way for others' sake
* HopelessSuitor: He harbored feelings for Rize, even after she called him a "boring guy".
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: At least when it comes to Rize. He considers her a remarkable and admirable woman and actually asks her to become the new leader of the 11th Ward. She laughs in his face, and mockingly suggests he should do it himself -- he takes this as genuine encouragement and attempts to live up to what he thinks are her high expectations of him.
* HotBlooded: He's a passionate guy, and this leads to an initial confrontation when he mistakes Kaneki as Rize's boyfriend.
* TheLancer: He becomes the second-in-command to Kaneki, acting as a more moderate voice to Kaneki's increasing ruthlessness.
* TheLeader: He ''tries'' to be the leader of the 11th ward after Rize left, but was defeated when Aogiri Tree arrived. He admits he took on the role because he thought it was what Rize wanted.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: His feelings for Rize completely blind him to the fact that she's a terrible person who doesn't care about anyone but herself. She is incredibly selfish and causes problems for other ghouls in the 11th ward by attracting the attention of CCG as well as destabilizing the area. He even goes to the 20th ward to find her despite knowing that he'd incur the wrath of the Aogiri Tree.
* NiceGuy: Perhaps one of the kindest characters in the series. While he lacks strength, other Ghouls willingly follow him because he genuinely cares for their well-being.
* NonActionGuy: Despite his best effort, Banjou is pitifully weak. He can't even use his kagune, so his only advantage is that he's heavily built.
* TeamDad: To the other weak ghouls in the 11th Ward, who he attempts to protect from Aogiri.
* TechnicalPacifist: He's noted by the others to be a peaceful guy, not even bringing out his kagune in a life-or-death situation. Even so, he ''is'' a Ghoul.
* UndyingLoyalty: After being saved by Kaneki, he decides to devote himself to becoming the other Ghoul's "shield".
* YouAreNotAlone: To Kaneki, begging him to remember that he doesn't need to take all the burdens onto himself.

----
* ColorCodedCharacters: Primarily told apart by the color of their hoodie -- Red for Ichimi, Blue for Jiro, and Purple for Sante.
* CowardlyLion: They are well aware that they're weak, but show great courage when their companions are in danger.
* TheFaceless: Even when hanging out without their masks, their faces are never shown.
* FragileSpeedster: Their speed is their one advantage, and their fighting focuses on out-maneuvering their opponents since none of them can handle being hit.
* GasMaskLongcoat: Or hoodies, in this case, since Ghouls seem to prefer shorter coats for easier movement.
%%* GasMaskMooks: A heroic example.
* InTheHood: Their matching hoodies, worn to conceal their identities.
* NumericalThemeNaming: Their names mean "One", "Two", and "Three", respectively. They even have these numbers on their hoodies and masks.
* SarcasticDevotee: They're prone to mocking Banjou for his weakness and cowardice, but they're also the first to leap into the fray to help him.
%%* ScifiBobHaircut: Jiro has one.
* SpikyHair: Ichimi has spiky, black hair under his hoodie.

A sweet girl with a fondness for books. However, under her charming personality and appearance, she is known as "Binge Eater" Rize, a well-known Ghoul that terrorized several other wards before moving to the 20th ward. Her kagune is started to be extremely powerful and unique, making her a much-sought-after target by multiple groups.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her hair is depicted as a light purple in the anime, while the film goes for dark brown.
* AscendedExtra: In the anime, she is given a larger role and many extra scenes as a figure of Kaneki's imagination.
* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:A vicious SerialKiller who got subjected at a FateWorseThanDeath so hideous and so unrelated to her actual crimes that it's hard to even view it as karma. When Kaneki, one of her victims, sees her again, he's appalled by what's been done to her.]]
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:The "accident" that "killed" her was no accident but engineered by Souta / Kichimura as part of his plan to eventually turn her into his BabyFactory. The accident left her in a FateWorseThanDeath and she was reduced to a LivingMacGuffin with no agency who was left at the mercy of several people who wanted to use her unique kagune. But considering she was a selfish and deranged SerialKiller who felt no remorse in killing as many people as she could, there's limited sympathy one can have for her.]]
* BadassBookworm: It seems that she liked reading and was reading the same book at Kaneki when he asks her out on a date. Tsukiyama also mentions that she liked to read and many characters comment on the fact that she was one of the strongest ghouls. She was in fact able to take over the feeding grounds of several ghouls in the 20th district.
* BespectacledCutie: She invokes this. She has perfect eyesight, and the only reason she wears glasses in her human guise is to give her a "cuter" appearance and cause others to think she's harmless when she's actually a LiteralManeater.
* BigBadEnsemble: Though she dies early on, she remains as Kaneki's EnemyWithin [[spoiler:and isn't even really dead]], attempting to influence him to become as hedonistic and cruel as her [[spoiler:and playing a key role in Souta / Kichimura's plan]].
* BigEater: She's a ghoul known to eat humans far more often than necessary, to the point where her work was once mistaken for that of an entire gang, hence the moniker 'Binge Eater' Rize.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She initially seems like a shy and modest girl, but that personality turns out to be a ruse in order to seduce Kaneki. She then proceeds to try and eat him.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has a large bust, which is one of the reasons why she's considered so attractive by many. She knows it too and has been shown to seduce men by leaning her torso so to give them a view of her cleavage. Even Kaneki gets [[DistractedByTheSexy distracted]] by her chest during his "date" with her.
* CatchPhrase: "I'm bored."
* CombatTentacles: Due to her kagune, she could have six, shard red tentacles emerge from her back, and she's quite good at using them to play with her food or fend off enemies.
* CommonalityConnection: Uses her love for books to bond with Kaneki and make him fall for her, so she could lure him into her trap. Ironically she wasn't faking it and she does like to read.
* TheCorrupter: In Kaneki's mind, it is a psychological manifestation of Rize that constantly encourages him to embrace his Ghoul instincts. This is especially played up in the anime, where several extra scenes are added.
* CuteBookworm: Invoked. Coupled with her great fondness for books, she showed a shy and cute personality to seduce her victims just like she did with Kaneki.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: When her eyes are normal, at least, they are the same purple shade as her hair color.
* DamselInDistress: Banjou sees her as this and comes looking for her in the 20th ward because he thinks that she's in danger. [[spoiler:We later find out that she really is in danger. The beams that crushed her at the beginning of the series did not kill her and since that time she's been kept by Dr. Kanou as a means to create more ghouls. When we finally see her alive, she is powerless.]]
* DarkActionGirl: Rize is implied to be this at the beginning of the series. She is stated to have thrown several wards into chaos before moving on to the next. Her killing of the strongest Ghouls in District 11 allowed Aogiri to move in and take over.
* ADayInTheLimelight: "Side Story: Rize" focuses on her life in the 11th ward a few months before the start of the story.
* TheDreaded: As the "Binger Eater", she's a feared and infamous nomadic SerialKiller ghoul known to create massacres and kill far more humans than necessary, thus bringing unwanted attention to the wards she resides in. She always manages to escape the CCG while leaving the other ghouls in the ward to deal with the consequences.
* DudeMagnet: She's a great beauty who knows how to act to have guys fall for her. But she has also had guys falling for her even when she ''wasn't'' trying to seduce them, such as Banjou and [[spoiler: Souta / Kichimura]].
* AFateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler: She actually survived the steel beam incident, but Dr. Kanou keeps her barely alive with all her limbs cut off and trapped in his laboratory so he can use her for his experiments. Even after she's rescued, she's kept trapped in Yomo's apartment in a half-starved state that drives her delirious, as she's considered far too dangerous to allow her to regain her former strength.]]
* EvilLaugh: While she was sadistically torturing Kaneki after revealing her true nature to him, she was laughing as a sign of amusement and pleasure.
* FemmeFatale: Known for using her beauty to lure in men. Interestingly, she didn't play up her sexuality and instead projected a "shy girl" persona to lure in men. It worked too, since that's what attracted Kaneki to her, and he wasn't the first guy to fall for it. In Kaneki's hallucinations of her, she does play the role of seductress as she tempts him to give in to his HorrorHunger.
* FlowerMotifs: The Red Spider Lily, traditionally associated with Death and Abandonment or Loss. Her kagune are represented by these flowers in the opening, while her appearance to Kaneki in a vision prompts the flowers to begin appearing around them.
* HateSink: Overlapping with HatedByAll. She has absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. And outside of maybe two people, no one InUniverse liked her either. As even before she met Kaneki, she made a lot of enemies. And it's even why someone in Aogiri Tree [[DeconstructedTrope eventually set up her "accident."]] [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome Because her shameless binge eating was attracting too much attention from the CCG.]]
* HeadTurningBeauty: Most characters InUniverse find her incredibly attractive. When she walks inside the cafe in the very first chapter, most people literally turn their heads to stare at her. Upon seeing her Hide, even tells Kaneki to give up on his crush, as she's clearly out of his league.
* TheHedonist: Her only goal in life is to indulge in her depraved need to kill to sate her boredom, with no regards on how this affects anyone else around her.
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: Goes from being TheDreaded Binge Eater [[spoiler: to Dr. Kanou's personal kakuhou farm to an insane shell of her former self who can only cry, drool, and beg for meat. Kaneki is particularly shocked upon meeting her again, since the Rize that appears him his mind is still a confident, remorseless SerialKiller.]]
* ItAmusedMe: She lived solely for her own enjoyment, doing things to ease her boredom, which is how she became more and more depraved over time.
* ItsAllAboutMe: She's incredibly selfish and doesn't care about how her actions affect others. [[spoiler: It's what led to her downfall, as even, Kichimura, one of the few people who cared for her ends up betraying her due to her complete disregard towards him.]]
* LackOfEmpathy: Blows off any and all pain and anguish she causes to others, caring only for [[ItsAllAboutMe her own personal amusement]].
* LecherousLicking: She tends to lick her lips in a perverted fashion when she's thinking or talking about eating people.
* LiteralManeater: Her usual modus operandi is to seduce men so she can seclude and devour them. But she doesn't mind eating women if she gets the chance.
* LivingMacGuffin: She ''was'' this, prior to being killed. Kaneki is considered a potential substitute by Aogiri, due to inheriting her kakuhou.
* LustObject:
** For [[spoiler: Souta / Kichimura, who has been extremely attracted to her since they were very young. He even helped her escape from his family, but her LiteralManeter actions drove him to become a {{Yandere}} leading to him to wanting to capture her and turn her into his BabyFactory.]]
** Kaneki's hallucinations about her tend to be sexual in nature, especially in the anime, implying he's still attracted to her despite everything she did to him.
* MadWomanInTheAttic: [[spoiler: After being rescued from Kanou's lab, Yomo keeps her tied up and hidden in his makeshift home. He admits that he only feeds her enough to survive, but not enough to regain her strength]].
* ManicPixieDreamGirl: [[HopelessSuitor Banjou]] seems to have viewed her as this, while everyone else recognized the damage her selfish actions caused to everyone around her.
* MsFanservice: She's a pretty woman with a voluptuous figure, her assets are often emphasized by MaleGaze panels and shots and she tends to play the role of a seductress towards Kaneki. She also has a fair share of gratuitous fanservice scenes, such as a ShowerScene in her side story, and her very first scene in the manga adaptation introducing her while she's naked (albeit with ToplessnessFromTheBack angles or [[CensorShadow covered in shadows]]).
* MysteriousPast: Her past is shrouded in mystery, partially because of her tendency to move from Ward to Ward once she'd worn out her welcome, with her name also revealed to be an alias early on. Since Ghouls almost ''never'' abandon their given names even when changing identities, her choice to create an entirely new identity hints that she was hiding something. Her past and the reasons why so many factions are interested in her are slowly revealed as the story progresses
* NakedOnArrival: Her first appearance in the anime had her naked as she devours a bunch of corpses, to further illustrate [[NakedNutter her depravity]] and [[SinisterNudity debauchery]]. Yamori even ambushes her like that, and she [[FullFrontalAssault easily fends him off while still fully nude]].
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: She's known as the "Binger Eater" due to the fact she kills far more often than any ghoul finds prudent. If she's in your district, you can expect the CCG to be breathing down your necks soon due to the sheer damage she can cause.
* {{Narcissist}}: She doesn't care about anybody but herself and has a habit of killing far more people than she needs to survive simply for fun, using her beautiful appearance to attract men to their gruesome deaths. Amusingly, she and Tsukiyama don't get along at all; Rize regards Tsukiyama's obsession with fine dining as human-like in the most pathetic way imaginable, while Tsukiyama thinks Rize is a boorish sow.
* NotQuiteDead: Initially it seemed like the beams definitely crushed her, with Kaneki's doctor even telling him that her funeral was quietly taken care of by her family; [[spoiler:but she is later revealed to be in Kanou's lab, half-starved and with most of her limbs chopped off. After Yomo rescued her, she's barely even a shell of the person she used to be, restrained and reduced to crawling on the ground, crying, desperate for food, and unable to even recognize Kaneki.]]
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Itori reveals that "Kamishiro Rize" does not exist, but is rather a name she adopted at some point.
* TheOphelia: PlayedWith. [[spoiler:She ''seems'' to be this when Kaneki first sees her at Yomo's place, with messy hair and an unfocused gaze but still very much the beautiful woman he remembered. But then she finally reacts to him... by screaming hysterically for food, while sobbing and drooling everywhere. He's absolutely horrified to see her reduced to such a state]].
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Wherever she goes, mass destruction and death are almost guaranteed to follow.
* PosthumousCharacter: PlayedWith. She dies fairly early in the series, but she's the reason Kaneki turned into a ghoul and is referenced to by several characters due to her actions and MysteriousPast. [[spoiler:She's later revealed to be NotQuiteDead, but is reduced to a LivingMacGuffin rather than an actual character with her own agency.]]
* PurpleIsPowerful: Her hair, eyes, and accents in her clothing are purple. She's noted to have been an exceptionally powerful Ghoul, with unique Kagune that made her the target of more than one party.
* RedBaron: "Binge Eater."
* {{Sadist}}: She's not the Binge Eater simply because she likes the act of eating, but because she greatly enjoys the thrill of hunting down and cornering her prey. When she ambushes Kaneki, she takes great joy in how terrified he is of her, and wants to take her time in killing him to prolong his suffering.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: She's only really active in the very first chapters of the story but she basically kickstarts '''the entire plot''' by targetting Kaneki and inadvertently turning him into a ghoul.
* TheSociopath: She displays all the hallmarks of a textbook sociopath, with a superficial charm she uses to lure in her victims and a constant need for amusement. Her binging sprees do considerable damage, but she couldn't care less and skips town the moment things look bad, leaving others to deal with her messes.
* TarotMotifs: XV. The Devil. Temptation, lust, hedonism, and one's darker impulses. Makes sense considering her personality.
* TheVamp: A beautiful, deadly woman that used her beauty to seduce her victims. Akira Mado eventually figures out that the Binge Eater was a young woman, based on Rize's tendency to prey on attractive young men.
* VillainousGlutton: An unusual example, to say the least. She goes on brutal sprees of binge eating, leaving destruction and chaos in her wake.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: She lures Kaneki into a trap by claiming to be afraid of walking home alone, getting tears in her eyes and shaking with false fear. It works like a charm.

A member of the Ghoul Restaurant known as "Madam A", and the owner of several "Scrappers". She was living in poverty, jealous of the well-off Ghouls until Dr. Kanou offered to let her take charge of his failed experiments.
----
* ChekhovsGunman: She originally appears as a member of the Ghoul Restaurant, but is later tracked down by Kaneki's group when it turns out she knows Dr. Kanou.
* EatTheRich: She thinks that wealthy people probably taste better.
* HatesRichPeople: She's extremely resentful of those well-off and able to enjoy the good life.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: Her reason for signing on with Dr. Kanou.
* MockMillionaire: She pretends to be wealthy and powerful, but she's actually living in humble conditions and stuck handling Dr. Kanou's castoffs.
* RedBaron: "Madam A", the alias she uses at the Ghoul Restaurant.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: She's last seen fleeing when Aogiri members interrupt the search of Dr. Kanou's underground lab. It isn't clear whether she escaped, or ran into the Doves that showed up later. (A bonus page in the volume release, however, shows her peeking out from behind some equipment. It's a blink-and-you-miss-it picture, hidden in the corner of what first appears to be a blank page.)

A humble Ghoul running an underground clinic who provided his services to others in need for a profit to support his family, who serves a relatively minor role in the series. Husband to Ryoko and the father of Hinami, he once had a hand in the 13th Ward's dangerous operations, but got out of it when his daughter was born. Unfortunately, his illicit line of work ultimately caught up with him.
----
* AdaptationExpansion: He was already dead in the manga, but the anime pushed back the timeline a little bit to feature him right before the day of his murder.
* AdaptationalUgliness: His manga appearance gives him short, cropped hair. In the anime, he has long and slightly unkempt black hair held back by a ponytail, as well as some other dishevelled and grungy features. It's mostly done to indicate he runs a back alley clinic and is not a legit doctor.
* ADeathInTheLimelight: All he did, even the morally ambiguous stuff, was to provide a stable source of income and food for his family, who despised hunting. Sadly, it came with a price, because he drew the attention of shady figures, and eventually ran into the one person who hates Ghouls who side with humans most (having been tortured by one while helpless) -- Jason.
* BackAlleyDoctor: Most ghouls don't go to proper clinics -- not only is there a routine test that can detect abundant Rc cells and give them away, their regenerative capacity usually takes care of all but the nastiest wounds anyway. Asaki seems both to treat them and put together weaponry for them.
* BadassLabcoat: He's a moderately threatening Ghoul who runs a clinic, and wears the physician's garb to go with it.
* CurbStompBattle: He made the mistake of telling Jason to go away and not come back. Jason then beat the ''hell'' out of him and punched him through his clinic's wall. That left him badly wounded and exposed their presence to the Doves. Although they were preoccupied with Jason, Asaki was too gravely wounded to get away. When Jason fled, he was unable to properly fend off the Doves, who promptly swept in like vultures to finish him off. Ultimately, the people who did him in got their comeuppance.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: He decorated his office with drawings that Hinami made for him, and immediately took a stand when Mado decided to complete the set after dealing with him first. Sadly, that was all it took to make him too angry to pay attention to his surroundings; he lunged forward at Mado, and Mado brought him down right away.
* DoNotGoGentle: He fought for his life against the Doves, yet they ended up trouncing him.
* {{Expy}}: An enigmatic man with glasses in a labcoat voiced by Creator/ChuckHuber? [[Manga/SoulEater Hmmm... now why does that sound familiar?]]
* TheFaceless: The manga keeps his face hidden at all times, being a PosthumousCharacter and all. Overlaps with TheGhost in the anime, being adapted from someone who is DoomedByCanon. The anime seems bound and determined to avoid giving us a good look of his face and casts light in front of it when he's shown at an angle that would reveal it, [[{{Foreshadowing}} as if it doesn't want us to get attached...]] and when he ''does'' show up, it's for the chopping block.
** Even an {{Omake}} at the end of the third volume/episode where Mado dies follows suit, showing him and his wife sipping coffee together in Heaven, with his back turned to us and a halo now above his head.
* FatalFlaw: Honesty. Had Asaki basically not told Yamori to buzz off for good and treated their last meeting normally, it wouldn't have incited the man to bash his head in with pliers. But he ''had'' to go and open his big mouth...
* {{Irony}}: His last client was Yamori, who needed a new set of pliers after he lost them in a previous altercation. He then clunked Asaki over the head with them upon learning Asaki had lost his spine for crime.
* OffWithHisHead: Mado deals a final blow to him via decapitation. Worse yet, he uses the head as a lure to reel Ryoko and Hinami in to his familiar scent.
* KickTheDog: The day he finished his work, the sadistic Yamori, AKA Jason, a frequent client from the 13th Ward, paid him a visit and took offense to thought of letting a human-sympathizing Ghoul run free. After beating him bloody, the poor man was then cornered by Mado and Amon, and decided to face them head-on. Grossly outmatched and already messed up from Jason's assault, it wasn't long before the veteran Dove Amon put the final nail in his coffin. After his death, Mado would use his kagune to replace the Quinque Jason destroyed, and baited the rest of his family with his cadaver, targeting his widow next, and sending her to join him in the afterlife.
* PapaWolf: Implied to be fiercely protective of his family.
* PrehensileTail: His Kagune. It manifests as a long, winding tendril with several bladed vertebrae. When it's turned into a Quinque, Mado notes it's an excellent weapon for ranged combat, but terribly limited in narrow spaces.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: When he dies, it snowballs into the death of Ryoko.
* PosthumousCharacter: Outright dead in the manga four months before the start of the series, which his wife is unaware of. In the anime, it changes into TheGhost.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Asaki was once a Ghoul who got mixed up with the wrong crowd and turned to crime to survive. He tried to put that life behind him. Karma decided he wouldn't get a free pass. It's bad enough Jason turned on him -- he then got fed to the Doves.
* {{Retirony}}: He was about to pack up shop... if only his last client didn't happen to be Jason of all people, who got pissed at the idea of a scraggly-looking whelp of a man that showed compassion toward humans going back to his life with a family and betraying his own kind in the process by leaving his life of crime. [[FromBadToWorse Worse]], Asaki's clinic happened to be stationed in the 20th Ward, and the Doves were out cleaning house in that district.
* SacrificialLamb: His death was the first real taste of tragedy in the series, proving that Ghouls who make plans for the future are unlikely to ever see them come to fruition.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Exists mostly to set up an OrphansOrdeal. He appears very fleetingly and is only mentioned a few times before being murdered, but his death leads directly to the death of his wife's.
* StuffedInTheFridge: Heavily implied that Mado cut off his head and used it to trap Ryoko and Hinami. Mado then taunted Ryoko with the knowledge that her husband was now dead and brandished a freshly-constructed Quinque made out of his kagune.
* TechnicalPacifist: He provided his wife with food because she could not hunt, and only fought when cornered. It was because he wasn't used to fighting that he got taken by surprise and was easily beaten into the ground by Yamori, then caught off guard by the subsequent arrival of the Doves who came to raid his clinic.
* UglyGuyHotWife: Unlike his wife, his appearance is really bedraggled and evocative of a LazyBum, featuring long, shaggy hair pinned back in a ponytail, a labcoat, hairy legs with a pair of shorts and sandals, and PermaStubble.
* WeakButSkilled: Comparatively weaker to most Ghouls and easily beaten by a single strike from Yamori, but Mado noted his kagune was formidable, and he destroyed a Quinque before going down for the count.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: In the anime, he appears, we find out a little about him and what he does, he gets the shaft, that's it. In the manga, he's just plain dead already.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: He frequently tended to Jason's needs. However, when he started a family, his attitude changed and he was no longer living for himself. He had kin to support. By the time he wanted to leave the business of underhanded dealings, he thought he could trust Jason with the news he was going to pack up and leave. He reacted [[TranquilFury seemingly composed.]] [[OhCrap Then Jason started cracking his knuckles, itching for blood...]]

----
* AxCrazy: He enjoyed the screams of pain and agony when Aogiri broke into the ghoul detention cell.
* BadHabits: He posed as a Catholic Priest, giving him access to child victims through the orphanage he ran.
* BigOlEyebrows: They're almost like caterpillars.
* BoxedCrook: He gets to continue to live, as a source of information for [=CCG=].
* ChildEater: He was infamous for favoring child victims, and ran an orphanage as part of his cover.
* ConsultingAConvictedKiller: CCG considers him one of their most valuable informants, sending Investigators to consult him on cases. As long as he continues to be useful to them, he is allowed to continue living.
* CreepyBlueEyes: His eyes are a piercing blue color, and add to his overall creepiness.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Implied, as he clearly favored Amon enough to spare his life even after being exposed. Much of Amon's inner conflict is driven by not understanding why this would be.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He comes across as polite, even warm and caring. In reality, he's a brutal monster that enjoys the suffering of others.
* OffingTheOffspring: His favorite victims were the orphans he raised. Strangely, he spared Amon after the boy caught him butchering another child. This fact continues to haunt Amon.
* RedBaron: "Priest", back in the day.
* {{Sadist}}: Noted to have enjoyed killing his victims in particularly brutal ways. When Aogiri attacked the prison, he laments not being able to join in the slaughter.
* SignificantBirthDate: Valentine's Day.
* WeCanRuleTogether: He invited Amon to join him when the boy learned the truth about him.

The father of Touka and Ayato Kirishima, a pacifist Ghoul that encouraged his children to coexist with humanity. He lived with his family in a human community and scavenged the corpses of humans and Ghouls to survive. This caused him to become a Kakuja, and earned him the title "Corpse Collector". He was eventually tracked down by Shinohara and Mado, and defeated by them. His kagune would be used to develop [=CCG=]'s quinque armor bearing his name.
----
* BadassBookworm: He enjoyed reading, as well as studying the human world. He was also a ''major'' target hunted by CCG.
* CannibalismSuperpower: He mutated into a Kakuja due to his scavenging Ghoul corpses.
* CynicismCatalyst: His death was this for his children, ''especially'' Ayato.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: He was a loving and gentle father who encouraged his children to live peacefully.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: He was a genuinely kind person, and a good neighbor to boot. He similarly encouraged his children to find a way to live peacefully alongside humans.
* HumanResources: CCG has used his kagune in the production of experimental Quinque Armor.
* InstantArmor: His Kakuja kagune took the form of a full suit of armor, and in turn became the basis for the development of [=CCG=]'s Arata armor.
* MartialPacifist: Though gentle and kind, he ''was'' a [[CannibalismSuperpower Kakuja]] and would fight fiercely to protect his family from harm.
* MasochistsMeal: He regularly ate the food given to him by his neighbors, and encouraged his children to learn how to swallow human food. Since people commented on his sickly appearance, it's likely he made himself sick eating human food.
* PosthumousCharacter: He died while his children were still young, and is only seen in flashbacks.
* RealMenCook: He enjoyed learning to make human recipes, even though he couldn't serve them to his own family or eat them himself.
* RedBaron: "Corpse Collector".
* SuperPrototype: His kagune was used to develop the Quinque Armor, Arata. At least six separate armors appear over the course of the series, as CCG attempts to perfect the technology.
* SupremeChef: He states that his neighbors considered him an excellent cook, something that made him happy.
* TechnicalPacifist: He did his best to refrain from harming others, scavenging the corpses of the dead for food.
* UncertainDoom: There is some ambiguity concerning his fate, since CCG produces so many Quinque from him. Whether he was simply killed or is being farmed for materials is unknown.
* VanHelsingHateCrimes: He did his best to live peacefully with humans, but was shown no mercy by the Investigators. What's worse, his death meant his two wholly innocent children were persecuted by the neighbors he was so careful to befriend.
* VegetarianVampire: He scavenged human and Ghoul corpses, as an alternative to killing.

* BodyguardBabes: They initially act as this to Madam, while at the Ghoul Restaurant. In truth, they are Dr. Kanou's bodyguards.

A middle-aged Ghoul living in the 20th Ward who works as a gym instructor. He was killed by Nishiki over a disputed hunting ground.
----
* AdaptationalHeroism: A very small example -- in the manga, when he sees Kaneki, he just tells him to get lost. In the anime he seems concerned by Kaneki's obvious distress and offers him some of the corpse he just killed. In both Nishiki kills him immediately afterwards.
* AlmostDeadGuy: He manages a few words to Kaneki before getting offed with little warning.
* AscendedExtra: He dies within moments of first appearing, but seems to show up in all kinds of side material and artwork.
* AuthorAvatar: Possibly. When asked what he looked like, Ishida claimed to resemble the ill-fated Kazuo Yoshida.
* ExtremeDoormat: His side story in the Light Novels reveals him to be this, getting taken advantage of by others.
* OffWithHisHead: Decapitated by Nishiki with one kick. His head is later thrown at Kaneki by an angry Touka.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Downplayed, but an omake in volume 1 shows that he chooses targets who've demonstrated unpleasant natures -- the man he killed in Anteiku's alleyway was a gym client who wouldn't pay his fees and harassed the female staff.

An organization of Ghouls, that has taken over the 11th Ward. Their leader is a legendary Ghoul known as the One-Eyed King, surrounded by rumors and myths. They are the primary antagonists of the story, targeting both Kaneki and the Ghoul Investigators.

* AntiHumanAlliance: CCG takes note of them as the largest and most organized group of Ghouls ever known, united by their hatred for humans.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: Aogiri values strength above all else, with the Executives enforcing their place in the organization through violence -- both towards their own minions ''and'' each other. The higher ranked members are all at ''least'' S-Ranked, with the group led by a legendary SSS-class Ghoul.
* FantasticRacism: Noted to be a militant group defined by their belief in the superiority of Ghouls, and general disdain for the weakness of humanity.
* MalevolentMaskedMen: The rank and file wear generic masks, while its leaders each has their own unique CoolMask to conceal their identities.
* TheSocialDarwinist: Pacifist and weaker Ghouls find themselves forced into servitude by the organization, which values strength above all else.
* TheSyndicate: They function much like a human criminal organization, with money laundering operations and mercenaries recruited from across the globe to serve as front-line soldiers. They are the most influential Ghoul organization that CCG has ever encountered, with hundreds of members.
* VillainsOutShopping: Their appearances in the (oft-canon) omakes are almost entirely them doing absolutely normal things, such as playing video games or gossiping about each other. The final appearance of Naki and his gang shows them playing on a see-saw.
* WakeUpCallBoss: Yamori and Ayato serve as this, when they show up at Anteiku and proceed to beat Touka and Kaneki into a bloody pulp.

A Ghoul surrounded in myth, considered both a legendary killer and an urban legend of sorts. Rumored to be the offspring of a human and Ghoul, it emerged from the 24th Ward a decade prior to the series and began to slaughter Investigators. Its rampage was finally ended by [[TheAce Kishou Arima]], but the organization continues to live in fear of its return.

Mobilizing radical Ghouls from the 13th and 24th Wards, it created Aogiri Tree and commands it as the mysterious ''One-Eyed King''. Acting primarily through its right-hand men, it rules from the shadows and has an unknown goal.
----
* AmbiguousGender: The Owl is a mysterious being in a massive cloak, with layers of Kakuja armor sticking out. As such, it's impossible to distinguish if it is male or female. Regardless, everyone refers to them as male, [[spoiler:which turns out to be a [[SamusIsAGirl mistake]]]].
* AntagonisticOffspring: [[spoiler: She's actually Yoshimura's child and an executive of Aogiri Tree, Eto. In the final chapter, it's revealed she captured him, presumably for future ghoul experiments Kanou will conduct in his new lab.]]
* ArchEnemy: Numerous Investigators consider the Owl their greatest nemesis, having lost someone during its rampages. Kureo Mado in particular is driven by his desire to get revenge for his wife's death, and Akira carries on her father's hatred of the Owl after his death. In the sequel, Kuki Urie likewise seeks to become stronger so that he can take revenge for the Owl killing his father.
* BastardBastard: [[spoiler:Her parents were never officially married.]]
* BigBad: Built up to be ''the'' largest threat in the series, feared by humans and Ghouls alike. [[spoiler:Actually Eto and Sen.]]
* BigBadEnsemble: Though the Owl is the biggest threat, Rize, [[spoiler:Dr Kanou]], and especially [[spoiler:Souta]] are additional threats.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Its kagune take the form of a pair of massive blades sprouting from its shoulders, as well as an enormous massive of spiked "plumage" that earned it the name "Owl".
* CannibalismSuperpower: Noted to be one of the rare Kakuja types, meaning that it gained power by eating other Ghouls.
* {{Cyclops}}: A distinct feature of its Kakuja mask, giving it the appearance of only having one massive eye in the center of its face.
* DaddysGirl: She is ecstatic after meeting her father, in spite of him abandoning her. [[spoiler:In turn, Yoshimura is completely devoted to keeping her safe regardless of her crimes.]]
* DarkActionGirl: Brutal, cruel, and with a habit of leaving victims scattered all over the place. And, as it turns out, [[SamusIsAGirl a girl]].
* TheDreaded: The very thought that it might show up results in [=CCG=] shutting down the 20th Ward and bringing in everything they have.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: [[spoiler:She comes to her father's rescue, and greets him with a joyful (if deranged) expression. Then it's zigzagged, with the revelation that she's handed him over to Dr. Kanou as a new "donor" for his experiments.]]
* EvilOverlord: Seems to be one, ruling over Aogiri Tree with an iron fist while remaining unseen by all but its closest executives. When discussed, the imagined image is of a masculine figure sitting on a throne.
* GeniusBruiser: Due to its massive size and deranged behavior, few realize the Owl is actually an exceptionally brilliant Ghoul.
* HairColorSpoiler: The anime gives greater hints to the eventual reveal of the Owl's identity, as a result of both showing her hair color as an infant and later, when she speaks.
* HalfHumanHybrid: [[spoiler:The child of Yoshimura and Ukina, a human woman.]]
* HeroKiller: It earned its reputation by killing almost everyone that encountered it. [[spoiler:When she shows up again, it tortures and then mortally wounds Shinohara.]]
* InstantArmor: Kakuja armor functions this way, and the Owl takes it to extreme lengths.
* KingIncognito: [[spoiler:Eto pretends to simply be a high-ranking member of Aogiri, leaving it unknown how many outside her CoDragons know that she's the One-Eyed King.]]
* LivingMacGuffin: Both [=CCG=] and the mysterious Organization "V" are looking for it. Villainous example, being the BigBad.
* MonstrousHumanoid: Its Kakuja form is enormous and barely human in appearance, showing just how ''far'' the mutation can take a Ghoul.
* NakedOnArrival: Justified by its full-body Kakuja armor. [[spoiler:She emerges naked, but quickly wraps herself in the tatters of her cloak.]]
* NighInvulnerable: Most enemies can barely scratch Owl's armor let alone inflict bodily harm.
* OminousOwl: The most infamous Ghoul on record, and pretty disturbing to look at in person.
* OneManArmy: The Owl alone is a nigh-unstoppable force, able to leave devastation and death in its wake whenever it appears.
* OrphansOrdeal: Legend goes that the experience of growing up without a family in the violent 24th Ward led to the Owl's hatred towards the world.
* ParentalAbandonment: [[spoiler:Yoshimura was forced to abandon her in the 24th Ward, in a desperate attempt to protect her from his former superiors.]]
* PsychopathicManchild: Most of its dialogue is either deranged giggling, or sing-song teasing of its victims.
* RazorWings: Owl's Ukaku wings can slice through just about anything, demolishing flesh and quinque with little effort.
* TheReveal: Owl's real name is [[spoiler:Eto Yoshimura.]]
* SamusIsAGirl: The Owl is a petite young woman, able to pass herself off as a child [[spoiler: when she's dressed as Eto.]]
* SecretIdentity: [[spoiler:She uses her real name, Eto, while pretending to be a mere Executive of Aogiri. She has also established a human identity as Sen Takatsuki, a famous horror novelist.]]
* ShroudedInMyth: It is legendary among both [=CCG=] and the Ghouls, for the sheer amount of carnage it left in its wake.
* SlasherSmile: Its default expression, made all the more disturbing by its Kakuja mask.
* SuperSpeed: Owl moves deceptively fast for its size. Surviving more than a few seconds without being torn to shreds is quite a notable accomplishment.
* SwallowedWhole: [[spoiler:Uses a nonlethal variant to rescue her father from the CCG, vomiting him back out when they've safely escaped.]]
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Many ghouls revere the Owl as a benevolent savior instead of the genocidal maniac they really are.
* VocalDissonance: The Owl's voice in the anime is somewhat jarring, hearing the same voice [[spoiler:used as Eto]] coming out of that ''thing''.
* WalkingSpoiler: Once the Owl begins to emerge from myth into the actual story, the spoilers come fast and hard.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Implied to be one, having been abandoned as an infant in TheCityNarrows and hunted by the mysterious organization "V" for the crime of simply existing. [[spoiler:Her father was forced by them to kill her mother, and she was left with nothing but her mother's journal to explain everything to her. 1001The One-Eyed King's right-hand man, a ruthless and proud Ghoul. He has little tolerance for weakness, and quickly discards Kaneki as useless. He is almost always with Eto.
----
* ArchEnemy: Houji seems to be one to him, as he flies into a rage the moment he sees someone using a Quinque he associates with the man.
* BerserkButton: Anything related to Houji, with the mere sight of a Quinque he associates with the Investigator causing him to lose his cool.
* ColdBloodedTorture: Off-panel, he interrogates Dr. Kanou's assistant about where the doctor is hiding, and later emerges carrying her severed foot. No details are given, but Naki's comments suggest torture as involved in the process of gaining information.
%%* TheComicallySerious: His role in the omakes.
* CoolMask: He wears one over the lower half of his face.
* TheDragon: He is the second-in-command of Aogiri Tree, and is stated to have exceptional fighting strength.
* EvilCounterpart: To Renji Yomo as a tall, coated, stoic and loyal follower, as well as considered one of the strongest ghouls.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: He absolutely towers over the child-like Eto.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: His decision to toss aside Kaneki ultimately leads to him becoming one of the strongest Ghouls in the story, with a serious grudge against their organization. Eto even points out that Tatara should have just killed Kaneki, instead of leaving the chance for him to develop into a threat.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: While stated to be incredibly powerful, he hasn't actually...done much on-screen. He primarily gives orders, or watches smugly while his minions slaughter his foes. [[spoiler:Until :re, that is.]]
* ShipTease: With Eto. If his [[spoiler:final words and actions]] are anything to go by, he may have been in love with her.
* TheSocialDarwinist: He apparently has no use for anyone he views as weak, and quickly tosses Kaneki away upon deciding that he isn't strong enough for their purpose.
* VillainInAWhiteSuit: A ruthless and evil man who cuts an eerie figure in his all-white clothing, with his white hair and red mask as the only contrasting element.
* VillainousFriendship: The omakes suggest he's actually close to Eto and Noro, showing them worrying over him and him confessing his worries to Eto.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: A handsome and utterly ruthless man with white hair. He shows no patience or sympathy for others, writing Kaneki off very quickly as useless.

One of the executives of Aogiri Tree, usually seen with Tatara. A child-like Ghoul covered in bandages, Eto behaves in a playful manner that conceals a keen mind and knowledge of many important secrets.
----
* AmbiguousGender: Due to being covered in bandages, it isn't clear what Eto is. The anime makes it clearer, giving Eto a girlish voice and brightly-colored pink and maroon clothing.
* AndShowItToYou: Tears out several of [[spoiler: Banjou]]'s ribs, doing it so quickly that the other Ghoul only realizes he's been wounded when shown the bones.
* AntagonisticOffspring: [[spoiler:Kaneki suspected that Aogiri's leader was Yoshimura's child. Actually it was more complicated than that. While Eto is revealed to be his daughter and she ''is'' a member of Aogiri Tree, she comes to her father's rescue and seems absolutely ''delighted'' to see him. However, it seems that she intends to use him for the second stage of Dr. Kanou's experiments in creating artificial One-Eyed Ghouls like her.]]
* BadassBookworm: [[spoiler: She's an accomplished author, but also the deadliest Ghoul on record.]]
* BandageMummy: An utterly terrifying example, that only makes Eto look creepy.
* BarefootLoon: She goes barefoot save for the bandages around her feet, illustrating her deranged and unnerving nature.
* BigBad: As it turns out, she's the [[spoiler:One-Eyed Owl.]]
* BreakThemByTalking: Manages to deeply unsettle Kurona and Nashiro by hinting about their DarkAndTroubledPast, suggesting some level of personal knowledge about what happened.
* ChekhovsGunman: [[spoiler:She is the One-Eyed Owl, the half-human child of Yoshimura being sought by multiple organizations.]]
* CompressedHair: The combination of hood and bandages probably help, but still [[spoiler:she's got quite a lot of hair to neatly hide under them. When we first meet her as Takatsuki, her hair is a waist-length bushy mess]].
* CreepyChild: Seemingly, as Eto has a small and child-like build.
* DarkActionGirl: She rarely shows off her true strength, but is quite powerful and merciless when she ''does''.
* FlashStep: Possesses speed sufficient to almost appear to be teleporting, using this to great advantage.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Subtle, but definitely there.
** [[spoiler: The flashback of the original encounter with the One-Eyed Owl, as shown in chapter 124, reveals the Owl is a small figure in a knee-length hooded cloak with wrappings around their feet. In other words, very much like what Eto wears.]]
** [[spoiler: Her right eye is the only one ever given any detail, hinting that she's another One-Eyed Ghoul. When her face is finally shown, her left eye remains normal.]]
* GigglingVillain: Eto's distorted, child-like giggling is quite unnerving.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Tatara and Noro both absolutely tower over the child-like Eto.
* InTheHood: Wears a bright purple, knee-length cloak with a hood.
* KillerRabbit: The tiny child-like Ghoul wearing a pink floral scarf seems like the least dangerous member of Aogiri Tree, but this assumption would be wrong. She is perhaps the fastest Ghoul in the series, and effortlessly defeats the Twins.
* MysteriousWaif:: Evil example. [[spoiler:The lost daughter of Kuzen Yoshimura and his human wife, Ukina]] Her small body is loaded with more secrets, power and insight than almost anyone else in the series and [[spoiler: she's in control of a ''massive'' amount of the plot]].
* OffScreenTeleportation: She does this in the first episode of ''Tokyo Ghoul √A'', moving locations every time the mist obscures her form.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Her tiny frame, high voice, and childlike behavior make it easy to mistake Eto for a child -- something that seems intentional on her part. [[spoiler: She's actually 24, and an incredibly beautiful grown woman]].
* RedBaron: [[spoiler: The One-Eyed Owl [=/=] The One-Eyed King]].
* ScarfOfAsskicking: It's pink and floral.
* SoftspokenSadist: She's rather calm and cheerful, [[spoiler:even while ripping people apart]].
* SpitTake: In an omake, when Tatara shows her a comical drawing Nico did of him.
* SuperSpeed: Displays speed far beyond any other Ghoul, easily out-maneuvering the twin sisters and taking down Banjou before he'd even realized Eto was there.
* TwoAliasesOneCharacter: [[spoiler: She is the One-Eyed Owl, as well as author Sen Takatsuki.]]
* VillainousFriendship: With Noro and Tatara, with the omakes showing her alternately teasing or offering advice to them.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: There's something distinctly ''off'' about Eto's voice, giving it an inhuman quality.
* WaifProphet: She foretells many events and revelations throughout the collection of Tokyo Ghoul works, through [[spoiler: her books written with the pen name Sen Takatsuki]].
* WeHaveReserves: Subverted. Though their plan required half their forces to act as decoys, afterwards Eto asks how many of their comrades ended up falling in battle and seems displeased at their deaths.

The other direct subordinate of Aogiri's Leader, a massive Ghoul that never speaks. They display regenerative abilities far beyond the norm for a Ghoul, and is noted for an enormous appetite.

* AmbiguousGender: While Noro's height and (apparent) build seem masculine, their name is linked to a type of ''Priestess'' and Spirit Medium. Likewise, in the special playing cards made for the series, Noro is the ''Queen'' of Spades. In an omake, it's suggested even Yamori, Nico, and the Bin Brothers aren't sure whether Noro is a man or a woman.
* BigEater: It's noted that Noro eats an absurd amount of food compared to other Ghouls.
* TheBrute: Noro's defining trait is brutality and strength, acting as the other primary agent of the One-Eyed King.
* CombatTentacles: Noro's kagune are a pair of tentacles ending in hideous smiling mouths, used to tear victims to pieces.
* CoolMask: A seemingly-eyeless mask with a giant smile as its main feature.
* EvilRedhead: This ruthless Ghoul has extremely dark red hair, looking almost black in most light.
* EyelessFace: Their mask gives this appearance, with no obvious place to see out.
* ExorcistHead: In the anime, Noro turns their head almost completely around to look at someone behind them -- including horrific sounds of bones snapping/popping for extra BodyHorror.
* TheFaceless: Noro has never been seen without their mask. An omake features Yamori, Nico, and one of the Bin Brothers drawing what they ''think'' Noro looks like, suggesting even other Aogiri members aren't sure.
* FedToTheBeast: Tatara uses Noro for this purpose, feeding [[spoiler: Takizawa]] to them.
* HealingFactor: Far beyond the norm seen by other Ghouls, allowing Noro to simply pull severed parts back together when kicked in half by Yomo.
* MadeOfPlasticine: Uta remarks on the lack of resistance upon running Noro through with his bare hands.
* MonstrousHumanoid: There's definitely something strange about Noro, something Yomo immediately comments on when they cross paths. Noted for his abnormal appetite even by Ghoul standards, as well as displaying regeneration far beyond what should be possible for a Ghoul.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Both the prominent feature of Noro's mask, and a distinctly horrifying feature of their kagune.
* PullingThemselvesTogether: When decapitated, Noro's head suddenly sprouts strands of flesh in mid-air and reattaches to their body.
* RedRightHand: Black fingernails, a trait some Ghouls seem to develop.
* SilentAntagonist: Noro never makes a sound, and seems to simply ''be there'' when not slaughtering on Tatara's orders.
* VillainExitStageLeft: The battle with Tsukiyama, Yomo, and Uta is interrupted by a mysterious clock Noro is carrying, which has just gone off. Noro immediately wanders off, carrying a wounded Ayato away. Tsukiyama jokes that maybe they have a curfew.
* VillainousFriendship: The omakes suggest that Noro actually cares about both Tatara and Eto.
* TheVoiceless: Presumably, as a leader Noro should be able to speak. However, it's never happened on panel and lower-ranking members have apparently never heard Noro make so much as a sound.

One of the executives of Aogiri Tree, famed as "[[Franchise/FridayThe13th Jason of the 13th Ward]]" for his {{sadist}}ic tendencies and hockey mask. He enjoys torturing other ghouls for his personal amusement. After encountering Kaneki, he becomes obsessed with obtaining the half-Ghoul as his personal "toy", manipulates events in order to capture him.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: After his death, more than one former associate has made comments suggesting he had [[HoYay questionable]] relationships with them.
* ArcVillain: Of the Aogiri arc.
* BadassInANiceSuit: He always wears a three-piece suit, with the jacket and slacks white for bonus points. He removes the jacket, pins up the sleeves, and wears an apron when indulging in his... hobby.
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: It isn't clear what his personality was like prior, but after his imprisonment and torture he emerged a brutal sadist. He describes the moment the torture drove him insane, and how he took on his tormentor's personality to survive. After Kaneki is tortured by him and escapes, he begins to take on Yamori's CharacterTic and personality traits.
* TheBerserker: Once he activates his Kakuja form, he completely loses what little control he had left, shouting Kaneki's name over and over again while recklessly attacking him.
* CannibalismSuperpower: His kagune has been enhanced through his eating other Ghouls, giving him an armored shell.
* CharacterTic: He cracks his fingers by pressing down on his knuckles with his thumb, a tic he picked up from his tormentor and one Kaneki picks up from him. More than a few readers have noted picking up the same tic after reading the Aogiri arc.
* ColdBloodedTorture: His hobby; he tortures Kaneki for ten days solid, purely for his own fun.
* CoolBigBro: To Naki, his right-hand man.
* CoolMask: A hockey mask, which earned him his nickname.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: After beating Naki to a bloody pulp, he accepted the young Ghoul's request to work for him.
* TheDogBitesBack: He was on both sides of this, having lashed out at his tormentor upon breaking free and likewise, was on the receiving end when Kaneki broke free from his restraints.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the anime, he's shown having a brief confrontation with Rize in the very first episode.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: One of the bonus comics features him reminiscing sadly about his mother, in another nod to [[Franchise/FridayThe13th his namesake]]. After Kaneki critically wounds him and leaves him to die, he repeatedly cries out for his mother.
* EvilIsPetty: He was already vile enough to begin with, being a brutal TortureTechnician that enjoyed making people suffer, but when Kaneki refuses to go along with his SadisticChoice, and Nico expresses [[EvenEvilHasStandards unease]] over this particular "game", Yamori throws a temper tantrum and kills both hostages. He then slaps Nico on his way out, blaming him for ruining his fun.
* ExactWords: He reassures Kaneki that he never tells "boring lies". When Kaneki later calls him on lying, he invokes this trope by pointing out he's having too much fun for it to be a boring lie.
* {{Expy}}: An InUniverse example. His name came from Investigators being reminded of a certain Hockey mask-wearing murderer related to the number 13...
* {{Foil}}: To Juuzou. Both are associated with the number 13, and both became sadistic monsters as a result of extensive abuse suffered at the hands of the opposite species. [[spoiler: When the two meet, Juuzou kills him and has him used as the material to make his [[SinisterScythe Quinque]], which he promptly names "Jason"]].
* FreudianExcuse: He was taken to a Ghoul Detention Center sometime in the past, and handed over to an interrogator in hopes of getting information from him. His interrogator was sadistic and completely out of control, subjecting him to torture that finally drove him insane. He emerged from his captivity having taken on his tormentor's personality, and became the brutal killer known as "Jason".
* GoneHorriblyRight: He wanted to break Kaneki. He manages to do so, but Kaneki embraces his Ghoul nature and suffers a defeat which leads to Yamori's KarmicDeath.
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: He enjoys torturing and even eating other Ghouls.
* InelegantBlubbering: Near the end of his beatdown at Kaneki's hands, he breaks down in tears as Kaneki impales all of his limbs with his [[CombatTentacles kagune]] and forces him to count backwards from 1000 by sevens.
* {{Jerkass}}: He fully embraces the worst of his nature, being cruel and sometimes even downright petty because he has the strength to do what he wants.
* KarmicDeath: The torturer that enjoyed preying on others ends up beaten within an inch of his life by his victim, and left so that he ends up getting [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill "played with"]] by a PsychopathicManchild.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Nico appears to have functioned as this to some extent, serving as both a willing target and a voice of reason to bring Yamori back down when he threatened to go too far.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: When Kaneki breaks loose and fights back, he doesn't notice that Kaneki bit a chunk of meat out of his face until he notices him wiping blood from his mouth, as well as the blood running down his face.
* {{Narcissist}}: Yamori only cares about himself and his amusement only, he may have a good relationship with Naki but given how he is, more likely he just uses Naki for his own benefit.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Yamori is just his nickname, but no one calls him Yakumo.
* PetTheDog: Bonus material paints his relationship with Naki as one big PetTheDog moment, showing him patiently explaining things to [[TheDitz Naki]] in increasingly simple terms so he would understand and even [[ForgottenBirthday pretending]] to forget his birthday before surprising him with a present.
* PsychopathicManchild: When his SadisticChoice to Kaneki fails, Yamori whines and throws a temper tantrum before killing both his hostages, after which he slaps Nico and storms out while blaming him for ruining his fun. After Kaneki beats him and leaves him to the CCG's mercy, he repeatedly cries out for his mother to help him.
* RedBaron: "Jason of the 13th Ward."
* {{Sadist}}: As Kaneki soon learns, he takes great pleasure in torturing and mutilating others.
* SadisticChoice: He orders Kaneki to choose between a mother and a child, stating he will kill one of them. When Kaneki refuses to do so, he simply kills them both out of anger.
* ShoutOut: Invoked in-series. His alias comes from his sadistic nature and choice to wear a hockey mask.
* ThirteenIsUnlucky: He's from the 13th Ward, and was driven insane.
* ThresholdGuardians: He serves this role in the series, as Kaneki is only able to free himself and defeat Yamori after choosing to fully embrace his Ghoul side.
* ThrowEmToTheWolves: What Kaneki ultimately does to him, leaving him crippled and unable to defend himself when CCG finally finds him.
* TooDumbToLive: Torture's Kaneki till he accepts his ghoul side and not finishing him off quick enough only gives Kaneki more strength to kill him and torture him as payback.
* TortureCellar: His "playroom", where he indulges in his hobby.
* TortureTechnician: He is delighted to torture Kaneki, with one of his favorite ways involving ''crushing Kaneki's fingers and toes with bolt cutters'', letting them regenerate from Kaneki's HealingFactor before doing it over again until he filled a ''bucket a day'' with the poor guy's digits. When this didn't break Kaneki hard enough, he lets a highly venomous Chinese Red-headed Centipede make itself comfortable ''in Kaneki's ear canal!''
* VillainInAWhiteSuit: Our first glimpses of him in the anime involve focuses on his fancy, white suit. Unsurprisingly, he turns out to be a villain.
* VillainousBreakdown: He suffers one during his battle with Kaneki.
* WorfEffect: The anime adaptation features him attacking Rize in the first episode, with her easily fending him off and even stealing his pliers to show how much of a threat she is.

An executive of Aogiri Tree, and Touka's younger brother. He is a harsh and brutal, but Kaneki suspects he harbors a lingering affection for his older sister.
----
* ArcVillain: He, along Yamori, is one of the main antagonists of the Aogiri Arc. Both work together as members of the Aogiri Tree.
* BadassLongcoat: He wears a trench coat in the sequel, apparently having traded up from his previous taste in fashion. [[spoiler: He also wore one as part of his disguise as Black Rabbit]].
* BadBoss: He greets his subordinate, Banjou, by asking whether he needs to beat him until he vomits blood ''again''.
* CainAndAbel: Seemingly the Cain to Touka's Abel. Kaneki isn't so sure, though.
* ColdBloodedTorture: [[spoiler: Kaneki systematically breaks 103 of his bones, one by one while calmly listing them]].
* CoolMask: One with a creepy, stylized smile full of sharp teeth. He later trades this in for [[spoiler: a black rabbit-themed mask]].
* CynicismCatalyst: After being orphaned, the neighbor they thought of as their "Aunt" came to check on them...and promptly turned them in to CCG investigators waiting outside. He repeatedly warns Touka that humans cannot be trusted.
* DisappearedDad: He has...serious issues concerning his late father, and ends up transferring a lot of this anger onto Kaneki.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Ayato's eating of Touka's kagune looks all the more disturbing because the way he presses her against his body makes it look like he's raping her. (This is less true in the anime adaptation, which focuses more on his face and mouth, but compensates by making it look even more savage and vicious.)
* DynamicEntry: Leaping through a window, and breaking Banjou's arm in the process. The anime ramps it up even further, as he enters Anteiku by dropping from the roof and casually kicking in the store's front window without missing a beat, hands shoved into his pockets the entire time.
* EnigmaticMinion: It's implied he may have ulterior motives for joining Aogiri Tree, and Kaneki suspects it involves his sister.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Kaneki confronts him over his repeated sparing of Touka, and taking her down to prevent Yamori from going after her. He suspects Ayato still loves his sister very much, something he tries to deny.
* EvilCounterpart: To his sister, Touka. [[spoiler: Ramped up further when he takes on the identity of Black Rabbit, with Hide being the first to realize that the two Rabbit-masked Ghouls are not the same person]].
* FlechetteStorm: As an Ukaku, he can fire off shards of his kagune at a high rate of speed.
* FragileSpeedster: As a Ukaku user, he's incredibly fast but lacks stamina.
* FreudianExcuse: His father's death and subsequent betrayal by neighbors cemented his hatred of humans. His hatred towards Kaneki is a projection of his resentment towards his late father.
* HeightAngst: He's the youngest leader of Aogiri, and shorter than any of his peers by far. An omake reveals he's insecure about this, which probably isn't helped by Naki calling attention to his height.
* HellBentForLeather: He wears a black leather jacket and boots, and later favors a leather trenchcoat.
* {{Jerkass}}: He treats anyone he views as useless or weak harshly, and piles considerable abuse on Kaneki.
* OrphansOrdeal: He clearly never got over the loss of his parents, harboring deep feelings of resentment towards his father and the elderly neighbor that betrayed him. Unlike Touka, he refused the chance at a peaceful life Yoshimura offered and continued to live on the streets as a violent Ghoul until recruited by Aogiri.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: He calls [[CampGay Nico]] a "faggot" on more than one occasion. "Fairy" in the anime's English dub, which is a ''bit'' less offensive, but not by much.
* PrettyBoy: He's quite good looking, and pretty enough that Banjou initially mistakes Touka for him when they first meet.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: A purple one.
* TheSocialDarwinist: He despises weak people, and views them as useless.
* SpeedBlitz: [[spoiler: As Black Rabbit, he tears through a pair of Investigators in a burst of speed, quite literally shredding them mid-sentence]].
* TroubledButCute: He's quite good looking, something commented on by others. He also has a fondness for leather jackets, messy hair, and using safety pins for earrings.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: As a child, he was a distrustful but sweet boy who loved his older sister very much. The two nursed an injured bird back to health, and risked going back after being exposed in order to free their pet.
* YoungAndInCharge: He's only a teenager, but is one of the top leaders with numerous subordinates that answer to him.

----
* AttackPatternAlpha: The brothers fought in unison, using different attack patterns assigned numbers.
* BadassLongrobe: They wear flowing robes that conceal their forms.
* ChekhovsGun: [[spoiler: Their kagune are combined with the remaining pieces of Amon's first Quinque to make a new Chimera-type Quinque. This lance is specially designed to take down Kaneki, and inflicts a horrific injury that even his regenerative abilities cannot handle]].
* CombinationAttack: Famous for fighting together, making them exceptionally difficult to take on alone.
* CreepyTwins: Possibly. It isn't clear if they're actually twins, but they behave as such.
* TheDividual: They look and act as a single unit, with only their masks showing a sign of individuality.
* TheFaceless: Their masks are never removed, leaving their appearances a mystery.
* FlippingTheBird: When Kaneki gets one of the brothers down and orders him to surrender, he responds with this gesture...right before his brother ambushes Kaneki from above.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: When challenged by Yamori, they have the sense to back down and let him have his way. They're not happy about it, considering his actions dangerously close to defiance.
* NoNameGiven: Their personal names are never revealed.
* RedBaron: "The Tail Brothers".
* RedRightHand: At least one of the brothers has black fingernails, an unusual trait some Ghouls possess.
* SiblingTeam: It isn't clear if they're twins or simply an older and younger brother. But they are a lethal team, either way.
* SpinAttack: Several of their moves involve doing so, partially to build up force and partially to confuse their targets.
* TailSlap: Their primary method of attack, being Bikaku types.
* UndyingLoyalty: To the One-Eyed King. They are noted among the leaders of Aogiri for their exceptional devotion to the cause.

A member of Aogiri Tree, originally held prisoner in the Ghoul Prison. He is Yamori's right-hand man, and imitates his "Big Bro" in every way possible. He shows extreme signs of emotional instability, and isn't particularly bright.
----
* AffablyEvil: He's quite childish and likable for a violent PsychopathicManchild and even risks his own life to save his {{Mooks}}.
* BadassInANiceSuit: He wears one to imitate Yamori's look, and complains when extending his Kagune damages his clothing. His style later inspired his subordinates to do the same, forming the White Suits.
* BenevolentBoss: He's willing to risk his own life to protect his lackeys, something that even impresses Tsukiyama.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He's overly emotional and childishly stupid, but still an S-Rated Ghoul able to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Tsukiyama and Akira Mado.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: He wraps his kagune around his arm to wield it like a sword, the same technique used by Tsukiyama.
* BookDumb: He has...very limited ability to read or write, and considers himself a grown-up because he's capable of handling money and shopping for himself.
* CharacterTic: He cracks his fingers, just like his beloved "Big Bro".
* CloudCuckooLander: Some of the things he says or does make little sense.
-->'''Naki:''' ELBOW! ''(knees Amon in the face)''
* DefeatMeansFriendship: After Yamori beat him to a bloody pulp, Naki asked if he could call him "Big Brother" and started following him around like a puppy. Later on, Ken did the same thing to convince him and the White Suits to join Goat and fight by his side.
* TheDitz: He's prone to mishearing words, and behaves in a childish fashion.
* EnemyMine: Teams up with Tsukiyama when their duel is interrupted by the arrival of Amon and Akira.
* EvilCounterpart: An eviler counterpart to Tsukiyama, being a powerful Ghoul that wields his kagune like a sword and has an unhealthy obsession with another Ghoul. The two duel on more than one occasion, and express a mutual respect for each other.
* ExcessiveEvilEyeshadow: He wears heavy black liner around his eyes.
* FacelessGoons: He's accompanied by a pair of burly lackeys in matching suits, wearing hockey-styled masks. According to him, they're twin brothers.
* HeroicResolve: [[InvertedTrope Inversion]]. When Akira uses a prototype anti-RC grenade that disables Kagunes, he throws himself between her and his twin mooks. He follows this up by kicking her to the ground, tearing a chunk out of her leg, and then attempts to ''physically rip'' his kagune out of his back so he can fight.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: He admired Yamori's brutality, and dreamed of one day being tortured by his "Big Bro".
* LaughablyEvil: He's quickly established as a comedic character, but still very much a threat in his own right.
* LikeAGodToMe: Played for Drama. After Yamori explains the concept of "God" to him, Naki concludes that the other man must be his "God" -- the thing that gives him courage and strength during trying times.
* LoveMartyr: Bonus material reveals that he was regularly subjected to Yamori's more violent impulses, [[TooKinkyToTorture but]] ''enjoyed'' it. He fondly recalls being thrown out a window and having all his fingers broken... and doesn't get it when others try to point out these shouldn't be happy memories.
* NumberTwo: Yamori's second-in-command prior to being imprisoned, and claims to have handled cash for their operation.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: He states he's "destined" to torture Kaneki to death, in revenge for killing Yamori.
* PsychopathicManchild: He veers wildly between ruthless, brutal behavior and child-like whining and crying.
* ScarsAreForever: He's missing chunks out of his ear, an injury WordOfGod states was the result of Yamori biting him.
* TakingTheBullet: Throws himself in between Akira and his goons, getting seriously wounded in the process.
* TooDumbToLive: He thinks Tsukiyama is a great guy, placing trust in him moments after they'd just been trying to kill each other.
* VillainInAWhiteSuit: A PsychopathicManchild who models his style after Yamori, favoring white suits.
* VillainousValor: Even if he's emotionally unstable and pretty dumb, he genuinely cares about his comrades and puts their safety above his own. Tsukiyama is duly impressed.
* WorthyOpponent: He considers Tsukiyama to be this, and describes him as a "great guy".

The former leader of the 6th ward, before Rize defeated him. He is an incredibly skilled martial artist, and decides to throw his lot in with Aogiri Tree.

* ArcVillain: Of the Lab Raid arc.
* BarbarianLonghair: His hair is left loose and wild, adding to his savage appearance.
* BareFistedMonk: Unlike other ghouls that use their kagune primarily to fight, Shachi focuses mainly on the enhanced strength of a ghoul and hones it to absurd levels, smashing flesh and bone with his fists and feet alone. He really only uses his kagune defensively.
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: One reason Shachi is such a terrifying opponent is that he has devoted his life to studying martial arts, taking full advantage of the superior physical abilities of a Ghoul.
* TheComicallySerious: Stern and stoic when out of combat, his single-minded devotion to martial arts makes him a deadly opponent to Kaneki in the main series, and deeply silly in bonus materials.
* GoodHairEvilHair: He sports Fu Manchu-style facial hair, and is an absolutely terrifying opponent.
* HotBlooded: He seems to always be yelling and posing dramatically.
* {{Kiai}}: His fighting style employs the stereotypical martial arts shouting.
* TheLeader: He was apparently an exceptional leader while in control of the 6th Ward, and even in his absence his subordinates seem to be well-suited to keeping the Ward stable. Kaneki notes Shachi made wise choices in putting together a balanced trio to work for him.
* LongHairIsFeminine: His hair is fairly long, and this gets parodied when an Omake casts him as the titular long-haired Princess.
* MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours: He challenges Kaneki to become stronger, noting he cannot hope to take on Aogiri with his current strength.
* MusclesAreMeaningful: He possesses a dense musculature that allows him to push the limits of ghouls physical ability allowing him to do impossible feats such as jump the heights of three story buildings, throw people through walls, and hang upside down by his toes! His muscles are also dense enough that it is difficult to land a lasting injury, allowing him to defeat opponents simply by allowing them wail on him until their stamina is depleted.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Shachi, or "Orca", is merely his nickname. His given name is actually Matasaka Kamishiro, suggesting some sort of connection with Rize.
* ParentalSubstitute: He's the adopted but now estranged father of [[spoiler:Rize. Yomo takes care of her after rescuing her from Dr. Kanou because Shachi asked him to]].
* WalkingShirtlessScene: He rarely, if ever, wears a shirt.
* WorthyOpponent: He seems interested in Kaneki developing into a stronger opponent, so that he can fight him. Kaneki seems to reciprocate in a twisted way by planning to devour Shachi once he's defeated (since the more powerful a Ghoul is, the stronger a Ghoul can become by devouring them). Perhaps fortunately for all concerned Shachi proves too skilled for Kaneki to defeat.

[[folder:In General]]
A gang of Ghouls originating from the 13th Ward, and noted for their iconic Clown-themed masks. Their members have connections to various other groups within the Ghouls world, and they have a hand in the mysterious events going on behind the scenes.

* ChekhovsGun: Mentioned throughout the series, with their members appearing among the various factions of Ghouls. They were the reason Yamori was imprisoned and interrogated for information, Nico is the one to provide Kaneki with clues about the connection between Madam A and Dr. Kanou, and [[spoiler: Souta dropped the steel bars on Rize. Uta and Itori also played their parts in stringing Kaneki along for their own purpose]].
* CruelTwistEnding: The revelation that two of Kaneki's most valuable and trusted allies were playing him all along is particularly harsh, even with the DownerEnding.
* ItAmusedMe: They seem to do things solely for their own amusement, declaring that life isn't worth living if it isn't entertaining.
* {{Jerkass}}: All of them have little to no empathy for anyone human or ghoul, simply wanting a good laugh.
* MonsterClown: Their primary identifying trait is the use of Clown-themed masks, and they appear to be a particularly dangerous group.
* WalkingSpoiler: While there have been hints about the Clown Gang throughout the series, their true nature, intentions, and membership are not revealed until the final chapter of the original series.

An associate of Yamori, and noted for being flamboyant. While he allies with Aogiri initially, he is actually a member of the Clowns.
----
* AgentPeacock: He's a powerful Ghoul in his own right, earning a place in both a major Ghoul gang ''and'' Aogiri.
* BondageIsBad: His interactions with Yamori have a district S&M tone to them, and it's presented as part of the overall twisted picture.
* CampGay: Flamboyant to the extreme, and shamelessly so.
* ChivalrousPervert: He flirts with every man in sight, but doesn't actually try anything further. He also shows compassion towards the most innocent of Yamori's victims.
* DepravedHomosexual: Incredibly flamboyant, and into very twisted things. He describes an exposed spinal cord as "beautiful", and enjoys ruining people's lives for fun.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He usually allows Yamori to have his "hobby" without issue, but when [[spoiler: Kaneki is told to choose whether a mother or her child will be killed]], Nico attempts to stop it.
* {{Gayngster}}: A member of both the Clowns and briefly, Aogiri.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: He definitely has a taste for deranged men, noting that his favorites are Yamori and Tatara -- both ruthless and sadistic.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Yamori, acting as a voice of reason when the other got too worked up.
* NightmareFetishist: His ideal man is a deranged sadist that regularly punches holes in his torso and keeps a TortureCellar.
* PetTheDog: He attempts to talk Yamori out of killing two prisoners, and expresses sorrow over their deaths afterwards.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: When the raid begins on Aogiri's hideout, he abandons it without a second thought. It seems he was only hanging around because of Yamori, but once his "love nest" is ruined he loses interest.
* SmellsSexy: Subverted for laughs. In an omake, he cradles Yamori's mask to his chest. The next panel has Yamori sniffing his mask and wondering if he needs to replace it because it smells gross.
* SuperSenses: His senses of smell and hearing are vastly superior to the average Ghoul, allowing him to lead Yamori to Anteiku (and Kaneki, the "one who smells like Rize") and to overhear the plans of Banjou's group.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Having a hole punched in his side by Yamori seems to be ''flirting'', with him responding that they should save the rest for home.
* {{Transvestite}}: Very fond of fashion, as well as makeup. He even refers to himself as "Big Sis".
* VillainousHarlequin: A member of the Clowns, a gang of Ghouls that wear clown-themed masks.
* VoiceOfReason: Strangely enough, Nico often serves as the more reasonable and moral of whatever pair he happens to make up at the time.

A Ghoul in a clown mask, originally encountered as a member of the Ghoul Restaurant. However, as a member of the Clowns, he has been acting behind the scenes.
----
* BigBad: It’s revealed in the sequel that he is [[spoiler:Kichimura Washū]], the mastermind behind many of the events in the series.
* BigBadEnsemble: Shares the role with Eto, Rize, and Dr. Kanou.
* ChekhovsGunman: [[spoiler:Introduced early on as a member of the Ghoul Restaurant, in truth he is the one that attacked Rize at the construction site, and the BigBad of the sequel.]]
* CoolMask: A clown mask with stitching on it, giving the impression of facial scars.
* MonsterClown: He wears a clown mask, and takes part in some truly horrible past times even before his full involvement is revealed.
* NastyParty: He lured a human woman to the Ghoul Restaurant with promises of marriage and a fancy evening out on the town. Then he throws her to the Scrapper and laughs while she's roasted alive.
* RealNameAsAnAlias: [[spoiler:Kichimura Washū]] [[spoiler:uses his original given name, Souta, as his Clown alias.]]
* SlasherSmile: His mask sports one, and for bonus the stylized teeth look like needles.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: [[spoiler:He was the one responsible for Rize's accident and Kaneki's getting the transplant that turned him into a One-Eyed Ghoul. Subverted in the sequel, where he’s promoted to BigBad and Ken's EvilCounterpart.]]
