!The Umbrella Academy

[[folder:[=00.01=] (Luther Hargreeves/Spaceboy)]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tua_as_01_22.jpg]]
The leader of the Academy, blessed with super-strength. After a disastrous expedition to Mars, Hargreeves transplanted his head onto the body of a Martian gorilla. He moved to the Moon to station himself at the Anihilation Control outpost after he left the Academy.
----
* AlliterativeName: Early concept art shows that his name was originally going to be "Dr Darwin".
* BigGood: The closest thing to one the series has at the beginning of the series. He considers himself the leader of the Umbrella Academy and goads his team the most to action. Taken literally when he was transplanted onto the gorilla. Subverted when in a fit of depression he becomes a fat gorilla stuck to his TV set because there's nothing heroic to do.
* BlessedWithSuck: How he sees himself after the head transplant.
* FatSlob: Becomes this in the ''Dallas'' arc thanks to depression.
* FlyingBrick: With his strength, durability and jet pack.
* JetPack: Is seen always with one on his back, it allows him to fly and be somewhat of a LightningBruiser despite his bulk.
* KillerSpaceMonkey: He had his head transferred onto the body of a martian gorilla.
* TheLeader: Before their disbanding, 00.01 was the de facto leader of his siblings, pushing them into action and formulating their plans.
* NotBloodSiblings: He's in love with Allison.
* ParentalFavoritism: Luther was the Monocle's favorite child.
* PowersAsPrograms: Either the alien gorilla had SuperStrength anyway or the powers came with the head.
* RayGun: He carries a laser pistol.
* SuperStrength: Had this power when he was fully human and has retained it thanks to his gorilla body.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:[=00.02=] (Diego Hargreeves/The Kraken)]]
[[quoteright:240:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/msdhp_012_umbrella_5.jpg]]
The reckless and rebellious member of the team. He is able to hold his breath indefinitely and seems to have a thing for knives.
----
%%* AngerBornOfWorry:
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Despite lacking superhuman strength, Kraken is strong enough to impale a man with his fist.
* BatmanParody: Is a gritty superhero in the style of Franchise/{{Batman}} with shades of being a WolverineWannabe.
* EyepatchOfPower: It's unclear how he lost his right eye, but he's had an eyepatch even before Vanya left the Academy.
%%* DirtyCoward:
* DisproportionateRetribution: He once broke someone's jaw because the guy threw a drink at Vanya.
* FightsLikeANormal: Had to compensate for having a virtually useless superpower by learning how to fight.
%%* TheFourLoves:
%%* IHaveNoSon:
* {{Jerkass}}: Diego's default demeanor is being a spiteful prick. He is usually very abrasive and is quick to throw insults and threaten his siblings with his knife. In fact one of his insults led to [[spoiler:Vanya deciding to become a super-villain]].
* TheLancer: His vigilante volatility against Luther's more level-headed mindset just adds to this trope.
* LoveHurts: This is why he and Vanya hate each other. In ''Anywhere But Here'', Diego promised he would stay with Vanya when she was forced out of the Academy. He broke this promise several hours later, standing up a gig their band had [[TheCavalry to save his teammates]]. So, Vanya went overseas, neglecting to tell Diego that she was breaking up with him. Some time later, she would publish a scathing book that exposed the team's flaws. Then, when Vanya sought comfort after the Conductor offered her an opportunity to end the world, Diego insulted her, so White Violin tried to murder him.
* LoveMartyr: He tells the White Violin that if she doesn't stand down, he'll kill her. At which point she laughs, twines herself around him, and says they both know that's not going to happen. [[spoiler:Fortunately, Five is around to protect his brother.]]
* RockTrio: Diego, Vanya, and Body were in a band called the [[IncrediblyLamePun The Prime-8's]].
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: His power is the ability to hold his breath indefinitely.
%%* WomanScorned:
[[/folder]]

[[folder:[=00.03=] (Allison Hargreeves/The Rumor)]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tua_d_01_15.jpg]]
Described as narcissistic, Allison was one of the most useful members of the group with her power to instantly warp reality just by telling lies, usually to divert the crowd. After the Academy, she married her boyfriend Patrick and had a daughter, Claire, who is now under her father's custody after their divorce.
----
* ArtificialLimbs: Allison has a cybernetic left hand implanted after Dr. Terminal ate her real one. Come ''Dallas'' she seems to have had it replaced as well.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Well, her face is saved from the apocalypse, but ''her throat''...
* BoundAndGagged: Dr Terminal captured her as a child and gagged her to stop her using her power.
* CompellingVoice: One of the more perverse side-effects of Allison's power is that she can persuade people if she talks about certain feelings. For instance, she has an ex-husband who she made fall in love with her. Out of her influence, said husband is very bitter about it and doesn't want to see her ever again.
* CoolBigSis: She becomes one, patiently helping Vanya with physical therapy [[spoiler:even though she almost killed her.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Moreso when she's TalkingWithSigns.
* InfallibleBabble: Anything she makes rumors about, comes true in a snap.
* InformedFlaw: We have never seen Alison being narcissistic as an adult, or in her younger years, despite being described as such.
* LogicalWeakness: Stopping her talking by gagging her [[spoiler:or shooting her in the throat]] stops her using her power.
* NotBloodSiblings: She's in love with Luther.
* RealityWarper: When she begins a sentence with "I heard a rumor...", then whatever comes next is sure to come through even if they are physically impossible. For example, when a grocer informs her that some glue she wanted to buy isn't available anymore, she makes it appear in the grocer's very hand. It can be graver if she spreads the rumor that someone was assassinated.
* SawAWomanInHalf: A villain called the Murder Magician once killed her this way but it turned out to be a duplicate.
* SelfDuplication: As a teenager she lied to Hargreeves about going to the library when she was actually on a date. Her power caused a duplicate of her to go to the library.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Girly girl to Vanya's tomboy.
* TookALevelInKindness: She doesn't show much narcissism in the time frame of ''Apocalypse Suite'' and shows genuine concern for Vanya in ''Dallas''. Likely she had shed that trait over time.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Allison's powers only work [[CompellingVoice when she speaks]] so if she is gagged or suffers some specific [[SlashedThroat wounds]], Allison is left powerless.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:[=00.04=] (Klaus Hargreeves/The Séance)]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tua_d_01_13.jpg]]
If you're looking for the most dysfunctional member of this junction, it's Klaus. Fretful and morbid, he takes drugs to suppress his clairvoyance. He is also telekinetic and can levitate, but is only powerful when sober.
----
* AsianBabymama: Sadly a MissingMom; we only see the Asian baby and the grandmother he leaves it with.
* AstralProjection: Uses this to contact Luther after he's kidnapped by Hazel and Cha-Cha.
* BarredFromTheAfterlife: God sends him back to Earth saying that the Devil won't want him either.
* [[CampGay Camp Bi]]: Apparently.
* CunningLinguist: Learned Vietnamese during the time he ran a strip club in the country.
* DemonSlayer: Sets up shop as one at the end of ''You Look Like Death'' after defeating Vivian Clarke.
* DesecratingTheDead: When summoning Pogo, he promises not to puke on his grave anymore.
* DistressedDude: Gets kidnapped by Hazel and Cha-Cha in hopes he can get them to Number 5.
* FlatEarthAtheist: Says that he's agnostic while talking to God of all people.
* {{Flight}}: Can levitate himself.
* FunctionalAddict: Klaus is a bit of a wreck with the drugs, but at least he's not haunted in that state, right?
* ISeeDeadPeople: One of his powers is to channel the dead, talking to them so that he can extract informations from him.
* LevitatingLotusPosition: Concept art shows the gang walking in lines as adults and children. Both versions of Klaus are levitating in a cross legged position.
* MagicalBarefooter: His PsychicPowers don't work if he has shoes on.
* NewPowersAsThePlotDemands: Starts off with telekinesis/levitation and the ability to see ghosts. Later has AstralProjection, the ability to transport his soul and body through televisions, can let ghosts possess him to use their skills and was able to transfer his vampirism to someone else after he was bitten.
* OuijaBoard: He uses one to contact Pogo.
* PsychicPowers: Klaus has psychic powers ranging from telekinesis to communicating with the dead.
* RetCanon: Some elements of the TV show made it into ''You Look Like Death'' such as Klaus letting spirits possess him and being kept by an old rich woman.
* SplashOfColor: When visiting Heaven, his red Hawaiian shirt is the only thing with any colour.
* {{Telekinesis}}: Klaus is also a powerful telekinesist. He can float through sheer thought, and at the end of the Apocalyptic Suite, manages to [[spoiler:hold off a megaton of Moon chunk]].
* TelevisionPortal: Klaus astral projects through a TV at his end then appears in an ad that Luther's watching. He turns to goo and melts out of it into the room.
* TrackingChip: Luther can always find him because he slipped a nano-tracer into a bottle of barbiturates that Klaus drank years ago.
* WalkingTechbane: Blows up both [=TV=]s after sending his astral projection through them.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Seance can only use his powers while barefoot. (Doesn't mean he doesn't like shoes though, as he collects them.)
* WillingChanneler: Can let ghosts possess him temporarily to use their skills, shuch as dancing.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:[=00.05=] (Number Five/The Boy)]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tua_d_01_29.jpg]]
Five had disappeared before he was given a name, and got stuck in the future for decades trying to figure out how to travel back in time. Once he did, he got stuck in his youth, showing no signs of cellular death or growth. In the meantime, [[spoiler:worked with the Temps Aeternalis where]] he learned to microjump through time.
----
* TheAgeless: Pogo's testing in 5 show that he no longer ages. Later confirmed to [[spoiler:have been done to him by the Temps Aeternalis.]]
* AxCrazy: By his own admission, Number Five is a complete psychopath who has to focus hard to suppress his daily murderous impulses. [[spoiler:Indeed, he was made an assassin and implanted with DNA from various murderers throughout history.]] Whenever he has a legitimate excuse to let go, he will murder his targets with utter glee.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Is always in a suit even when gunning down hordes of mooks.
* CastFromLifespan: Inverted in one of the side stories where he says he can't use his power any more in case he de-ages back into an infant.
* {{Flight}}: Still wears a levitator belt that the gang wore as children.
* LongLostRelative: Luther's long-lost twin brother who spent decades stranded in the future.
* FaceOnAMilkCarton: His face appears on a carton at the end of issue #6. He went missing twenty years previous, so why would they still be using it?
* NominalHero: He's mostly motivated by self-preservation and doesn't really care about people that much.
* NeverGivenAName: He is only referred to as "Number Five," as he disappeared before he was ever given a name.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Literally a 60 year-old man in a 10 year-old body.
* PetTheDog: Quite literally. He adopts a puppy in ''Dallas'' and proceeds to dote on him whenever he gets the chance.
* ProfessionalKiller: Is considered THE perfect assassin, thanks to having the DNA of various killers in history.
* StrappedToAnOperatingTable: The Temps Aeternalis had him like this while they operated. He's awake and in distress but claims it was painless.
* TimeTravel: His power. He uses it to simulate SuperSpeed by "micro jumping" through time.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:[=00.06=] (Ben Hargreeves/The Horror)]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tua_00_08.jpg]]
A person-shaped can of monsters from other dimensions which he can unleash from under his skin. Sadly, we never get to know much of Ben apart from that, as he's dead by the timeframe of ''Apocalypse Suite''.
----
* TheCape: Dressed and acted like a traditional superhero.
* GratuitousJapanese: Is seen greeting "happy birthday" in Japanese to a pink serpentine monster that crawled out of his body.
* LovecraftianSuperpower: He could summon horrifying monsters through his body.
* NiceGuy: The Horror was one of the most well-adjusted and meek of the siblings, contrasting his monstrous power.
* PosthumousCharacter: He's long dead by the beginning of the series.
* ShrineToTheFallen: There's a statue of him in the Academy's front lawn
* TentacleRope: A usual LovecraftianSuperpower manifestation, he can summon and control tentacles coming from a portal on his stomach. His generally sweet demeanor meant that there were no NaughtyTentacles, and not even any proper CombatTentacles. Instead he settled for grabbing and constricting his foes, or more often than not just using his tentacles as handy rope for pulling and holding onto things.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:[=00.07=] (Vanya Hargreeves/The White Violin)]]
[[quoteright:240:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/msdhp_012_umbrella_5_1.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:240:Vanya in ''Anywhere But Here'']]
[[quoteright:240:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tua_as_04_22.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:240:The White Violin]]
The normal sheep of the family, Vanya is left out of missions to focus instead on practicing the violin. She leaves the Academy and writes a book, ''Extra Ordinary'', detailing her estrangement from the rest of the Academy. Little does she or anyone know how much potential she actually had until she auditions for the ''Apocalypse Suite''.
----
* AmnesiacHero: Has no memories in "Dallas" due to being shot in the head at the end of the previous series.
* AmnesiacsAreInnocent: Early in the ''Dallas'' arc it's established that after the surgery on her brain she can neither move nor remember anything, prompting a disgruntled Allison to [[ForcedToWatch strap her to a wheelchair and leave her in a room full of horrible news breaks]].
* ApocalypseMaiden: If you let the White Violin finish a symphony, you'll probably never live to hear it.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: In the final third of the ''Apocalypse Suite''.
* BrutalHonesty: She held back ''nothing'' in her book, including her siblings' worst vices and insecurities.
* IdentityAmnesia: Suffers a complete loss of memory [[spoiler:after Five puts a bullet into her head.]]
%%* LargeHam:
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:White Violin is shot through the head, much like she did to Pogo (although she survives the injury and he didn't).]]
%%* HotBlooded:
%%* IJustWantToBeLoved:
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler:She slaughters Pogo, one of the few people who comforted her when she was young.]]
%%* LockedIntoStrangeness:
* MadArtist: Towards the end of her first character arc, it's unclear whether she has an identity outside of her music at all.
* MindRape: It's [[DisneyAcidSequence unclear]] what the Conductor did to Vanya, but it involved full-body restraints, awful pain, and the ''sound'' of ''blood'' (which is apparently like "angels suffocating", btw). By the end she's weakly begging to go home.
* MurderSuicide: There is no indication that she would've survived her own music.
* MusicalAssassin: One violin note can literally slice a person in half. A few more and she can trigger an earthquake.
* MutualEnvy: She was always jealous of Diego because he belonged. He was always jealous of her freedom, something he would never have under Hargreeves' control.
* PowerDyesYourHair: In this case, an eerie bleached white.
* PowerHair: Averted. She wears her hair short all the time as an adult, but it's more about style than power.
%%* PowerIncontinence:
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: In her adolescence, Hargreeves sent her off to learn music overseas so she wouldn't "distract" the other kids. [[spoiler:Diego promised to escape with her, but didn't]], after which she left gladly.
->'''Cab driver:''' Going somewhere important?\
'''Vanya:''' Yeah... Anywhere but here.
%%* TheSnarkKnight:
* RockTrio: She, Diego, and Body were in a band called the Prime-8's. Vanya played guitar and sang.
* StrappedToAnOperatingTable: The Conductor strapped her to one and operated on her while she was awake.
* TechnicianVsPerformer: Performer; her art is a conduit for her volatile, uncompromising emotions.
* TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget: The smugly sadistic White Violin bears little resemblance to the fiery, insecure girl of years before.
* TheTeamNormal: Or so she thinks.
* TisOnlyABulletInTheBrain: She recovers from being headshot remarkably well, both her amnesia and paralysis being temporary.
%%* QuestionableConsent:
%%* WhiteHairBlackHeart:
%%* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds:
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sir Reginald Hargreeves/The Monocle]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tua_as_01_05.jpg]]
Entrepreneur, Olympic fencer, Nobel prize-winning scientist, space alien. After the BizarreBabyBoom, he came to adopt as many of the inexplicably born children as he could find, and could only manage to get seven.
----
* AbusiveParents: Hargreeves was a horrible person who had no business being a parent. Heck, he even hated being called "Dad"!
* FishPeople: When Klaus sees his ghost, one panel has him looking like the Gill Man from ''Film/CreatureFromTheBlackLagoon''. This is presumably his true appearance.
* ForScience: Apparently the reason he set out to find all the suddenly-born children.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: Number 5 tries on the monocle and sees Pogo getting his brain operated on, implying it has some recording and playback ability or lets you see the past.
* HighClassGlass: He gets his preferred moniker from the monocle he frequently wears.
* HumanDisguise: Hargreeves was an alien passing as a human, but while it is revealed early (as in, on the first page of the first issue), it doesn't impact on the plot at all.
* PetTheDog: When a young Luther expresses his desire to be an astronaut, Hargreeves puts a hand on his shoulder as a possible sign of affection and assures the boy that he will go into space.
* RenaissanceMan: Hargreeves was a renowned inventor and an Olympic-level fencer. However, he was also a major asshole.
* TheUnreveal: While it ''is'' revealed that the Hargreeves is [[NotQuiteHuman an alien disguising as a human being]], we don't get to see what he ''actually'' looks like unmasked.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Dr. Phinneus Pogo]]
A chimpanzee Hargreeves experimented on and made sapient.
----
* AlliterativeName: His first and last names both begin with the letter "P".
* ApesInSpace: Implied as his statue has him wearing a spacesuit.
* ColdBloodedTorture: The experiments on Pogo involved restraints and sleep deprivation.
* IntelligentPrimate: He is a genetically enhanced chimp who is highly intelligent.
* KilledOffForReal: The first and bloodiest victim of the White Violin's rampage.
* MonkeysOnATypewriter: Mentioned he was having a dream where he lived on an island and rules a tribe of sentient typewriters that were writing his memoirs.
* ParentalSubstitute: The only real father-figure the siblings had.
* ShrineToTheFallen: Number 5 builds a statue of him outside the ruined mansion.
* UpliftedAnimal: Was created by Hargreaves' technology to make chimpanzees intelligent.
* YourHeadASplode: [[spoiler:Vanya uses her power to blow his brain out through the back of his head]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Grace Hargreeves]]
A gynoid Hargreeves created to take care of the siblings.
----
* ArmlessBiped: She's supposed to wear arms but she finds them uncomfortable.
%%* DoAndroidsDream:
* HeelFaithTurn: She tries to convert a post-amnesia Vanya to Christianity, on the basis that "nothing else has worked out for you".
* ParentalFavoritism: In ''Hotel Oblivion'', Grace implies that Vanya is her favorite.
* ReligiousRobot: She apparently converts to Christianity in ''Hotel Oblivion'' with Vanya wondering why she'd do so when she knows everything about her existence being traced back to the Monocle, only for Grace to assert that there is an existence of a greater being who outranks Reginald in the universe.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobot: Downplayed. Personality-wise, Grace seems like a perfectly normal woman with the full range of human emotions. Physically, she resembles a cheap mannequin.
[[/folder]]

!Other characters

[[folder:Orchestra Verdammten]]
A doomsday cult disguised as an orchestra whose M.O. is to use Vanya, [[spoiler:the White Violin]], to destroy the world.
----
* WickedCultured: Well, they ''are'' a classical orchestra, right?
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Conductor]]
The leader of the Orchestra.

* AffablyEvil: "May I interest you in destroying the world?"
* CardCarryingVillain: He becomes positively giddy at the notion of destroying the world, executes subordinates at the drop of a hat, and remarks it just wouldn’t be as much fun to only kill a few people.
* DyingSmirk: [[spoiler:He dies with a smile on his face. Presumably because everything's going to plan.]]
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: [[spoiler:Immediately after her transformation, Vanya bisects the conductor with a single note from her violin.]]
* NoNameGiven: Referred to only as “The Conductor”.
[[/folder]]

!!Temps Aeternalis
An organization dedicated to preserving the timeline by any means necessary.
[[folder:Temps Aeternalis in general]]
* TheAgeless: They were able to halt Five's aging process, so it's likely something they do to all agents.
* EyeScream: Five gouges the eyes of one of them with his thumbs.
* GasMaskMooks: All the unnamed ones wear red gasmasks.
* JoinOrDie: They give Five this choice.
* TimePolice: They're dedicated to the preservation of the time continuum by manipulating and removing anomalies from the time stream.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Carmichael]]
A sentient goldfish who leads the organization.
----
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Number Five takes revenge on Carmichael by swallowing him whole.
* KnightTemplar: Murder and blackmail are his go-to for saving the timeline.
* MeanwhileInThePast: Threatens Five by telling him he has two agents on standby to attack his mother two days before she gives birth.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Despite being a ruthless psychopath, Carmichael does seem to have the world's best interests at heart.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hazel and Cha-Cha]]
The Temps Aeternalis' top assassins after Number Five.
----
* AxeCrazy: It ''really'' doesn't take much to set them off.
* BanteringBaddieBuddies: They're a pair of super-effective assassins who are never seen apart, with [[TheDividual basically the same personality]]. Their banter in partiular is of the [[PsychopathicManChild childish]] variety.
* BatterUp: They knock Klaus out with a baseball bat when kidnapping him.
* DecompositeCharacter: Concept art showed there was originally supposed to be one elite assassin called Bruno who wore a ''WesternAnimation/MickeyMouse'' head. This version was scrapped for copyright reasons.
* TheDreaded: After easily taking down an army of the Temps' GasMaskMooks, Five declares he's already dead when hearing that Hazel and Cha-Cha are coming next.
* OmnicidalManiac: For reasons only they know, Hazel and Cha-Cha are really psyched about ending the world once they obtain Hargreeves' nuclear bomb.
* PsychicAssistedSuicide: [[spoiler:Klaus psychically makes Cha-Cha kill Hazel, then himself.]]
* PsychopathicManChild: Adults who act like 12-year-olds and enjoy mass-murder as a pastime.
* SweetTooth: Their main priority after killing Five is finding candy and deserts.
[[/folder]]

!The Sparrows

[[folder:In General]]
[[quoteright:1000:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_sparrows.png]]
A group made up of seven superpowered individuals born on the same day as the Umbrella Academy's members. They have a base in Norway, and connections with both Grace and a man named Deever. Little else is known about them.
----
* DominoMask: Played straight with four out of the seven Sparrows, who are seen wearing masks identical to the Umbrella's, except red instead of black. Averted with the other three: One wears [[SinisterShades sunglasses]], another one is a [[OminousCube cube]], and the last one [[TheBlank doesn't even have a face]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sparrow Number One]]
[[quoteright:457:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sparrow_number_one.png]]
One of the 43 super-powered children born on the same day in 1950 and the leader of the Sparrows. He possesses supernatural strength much like Luther, and referred to the latter as a "brother".
----
* SuperStrength: His main power. He possesses immense strength similar to Luther's.
* {{Flight}}: He can be seen flying while beating up criminals (Though, as all the Sparrows can be seen flying, this may be from another member's powers).
* FlyingBrick: Number One has super strength and is seen flying throughout the entirety of his debut.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Carla]]
[[quoteright:321:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/carla_4.png]]
One of the 43 super-powered children born on the same day in 1950 and a member of the Sparrows. She was able to make Vanya walk again and brought her back to the Sparrows' base at Grace's request.
----
* HealingHands: This seems to be her power. She was able to heal Vanya back into walking condition.
