!The Royal Tutor
[[folder: Heine Wittgenstein]]
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heine_wittgenstein.png]]

-->'''Voiced by:''' Keisuke Ueda (Japanese), Creator/MicahSolusod (English)

The titular Royal Tutor. A serious and dedicated teacher who is absurdly talented. Although he is old enough to be the princes' father, he is often mistaken as a child.
----
* TheAce: He's ridiculously good in just about anything he does. When Bruno challenges him to a series of tests to test his worthiness as a tutor, Heine dominates them all.
* AdaptationalBackstoryChange: The anime aired when Heine's past was still unknown in the manga, so the adaptation took its liberties and this caused his anime backstory to differ considerably from the one in the manga.
** In the anime, [[spoiler:as a teenager, Heine was the leader of a group of [[FreeRangeChildren homeless children]]. [[KingIncognito Viktor]] met him on one of his excursions sneaking out of the palace, and [[InterclassFriendship they became friends]] as Heine's situation opened Viktor's eyes to the reality of the kingdom. One fateful night however, Viktor was caught going with Heine while the palace was in an uproar due to his disappearance. The guards believed Heine was kidnapper they were searching for, and as Heine and Viktor were running away, one of them leveled his gun barrel at Heine to shoot him, only for Viktor to [[TakingTheBullet shield him]] instead. Heine [[UnstoppableRage went berserk on the guards]] but eventually came to his senses when Viktor’s pleas reached him, and remained distraught over Viktor’s condition as the recovered guards dragged him away. Despite being in prison for crimes he didn’t commit, Heine never pleaded his innocence, only prayed that Viktor would recover. His wish was granted, and Heine [[ClearMyName was pardoned when the truth came clear]]. After Viktor's accession, Heine became a tutor at a church Viktor built for street children to stay in, and then the Royal Tutor.]]
** In the manga, [[spoiler:Heine is revealed to be a former mafia boss whose criminal group tried to fight off the injustice that plagued their people in the kingdom. Eventually, some of his subordinates tried to assassinate King Viktor on a rainy night that the king escaped from the palace. Heine stopped them, but Viktor was still stabbed on the back and Heine was mistaken for the attacker, getting him arrested. Viktor saved him from execution by asking him to become his royal tutor so he could learn about the history of the Kvel people from him and put a stop to their discrimination. After that, Heine started teaching children at a small church deep in the forest until Viktor called him back to teach his sons.]]
* BadassAdorable: He's a very cute, childish looking tutor, but he's so strong that he can beat up several grown men on his own without breaking a sweat.
* BadassTeacher: Heine may appear like a child but as seen when [[spoiler: Fuchs and his mooks physically threaten Kai]], he alone is more than enough to take care of them. And even before then, he easily catches up to the fleeing Leonhard on horseback and casually proves his intelligence and smarts to the already brilliant Bruno.
* BerserkButton: Being mistaken for a child, and he has HeightAngst.
* BrutalHonesty: Heine does not hold back on his opinion on things or if the person needs a stern wake-up call. One instance is telling Leonhard that one of the many reasons why he did so poorly on Heine's competency test is because he chased away several tutors.
* TheComicallySerious: Most of the humor comes from his deadpan reactions to the royals' craziness, and there's also his habit of SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud with a completely straight face.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: Orange-red hair color and reddish-amber eyes.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Although his origins differ in the manga and anime, he didn't have an easy life before he became a teacher.
* TheDon: [[spoiler:He was the leader of a Kvel mafia before he saved Viktor's life and becomes his royal tutor.]]
* TheGadfly: There are moments where he's just messing around with the princes--Licht in particular is rather easy for him to tease. At the very least, when Licht is paranoid that Heine caught a glimpse of [[spoiler:his plans to leave the palace]], Heine repeatedly pulling a BaitAndSwitch to make it seem as though he did before making it seem that he didn't--when he ''did''--was really just him screwing with Licht's head.
* GentlemanSnarker: When a majority of the rest of the main cast is a {{Cloudcuckoolander}} in some way, it's unavoidable that he throws snarks at them. But even when he insults them, he always remains polite.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Viktor. The specifics aren't clear but they have been friends for years, Viktor is the first person Heine could trust and Viktor entrusts his sons to Heine despite knowing the latter's DarkAndTroubledPast.
** In the anime, it's revealed that [[spoiler:as a teenager, Heine was the leader of a group of homeless children. Viktor met him on one of his excursions sneaking out of the palace. Heine's situation opened Viktor's eyes to the reality of the kingdom, and they became friends, initially without Heine knowing that Viktor was a prince.]]
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He has shoulder-length hair in his younger days.
* ManlyTears: In the anime’s last episode, he shed tears when witnessing the princes defending him and insisting on having him as their tutor in front of the court.
* MistakenAge: Becomes a running gag as people who first meet him often thinks he's a child due to his extremely short height, much to his annoyance.
* MistakenForPedophile: Played for laughs when the three-year-old Adele tells Beatrix that Heine asked her to marry him. Heine has to explain he was just playing make believe.
* MisterBig: Although it's hard to believe with his cute childlike appearance, [[spoiler:he was the crimal boss of a mafia until he met Viktor.]]
* MysteriousPast: Aside from the fact that he used to [[spoiler:teach at a church]] and is a close acquaintance of the King, there’s almost no information about his personal life before he enters the palace. The hints are many, but they are disorganized and may or may not be real. Not so mysterious in the anime, however.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Gets a little forgetful when [[MarshmallowHell "surrounded" by Licht's "company"]].
* OlderThanHeLooks: Despite his short height and childlike appearance, he's an adult man.
* PennyAmongDiamonds: Heine is a commoner who has been hired as the royal tutor for four princes. He's frequently blaffed at the luxuries of his students' lifestyles.
* PrivateTutor: He's currently working as the four princes' live-in royal tutor. [[spoiler: Before, he used to teach at a church and before that, he was a mafia boss.]]
* ReformedCriminal: The career he had before becoming a teacher wasn't a very virtuous one. [[spoiler:He was the leader of a Kvel mafia that acted as vigilantes for their people who lived in unfair conditions. His life turned around when he stopped some of his men who tried to assassinate Viktor and Viktor asked him to teach him about the hardships of the people of the kingdom to become a better king.]]
* SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud: A RunningGag with him, such as snatching Leonhardt's diary and going "Step step step step step! Roll roll roll roll roll!" as he scuttles away from him then rolls under the couch.
* SingleTear: He sheds a tear after hearing the princes' speeches to the kingdom in the penultimate chapter, overjoyed at seeing that his efforts to make a better country have paid off and he can trust his students will create a bright future.
* SmartPeoplePlayChess: During his interview, Bruno challenges Heine to chess, in order to test his teacher's level of intelligence. Heine wins the game in a few seconds.
* SternTeacher: [[BrutalHonesty Won't mince any words with his students]] and will resort to ToughLove if he has to, but he's genuinely invested in their growth and they adore him for it.
* StraightMan: To the antics of the royal family.
* TheStoic: Heine rarely shows changes in his facial expression but when he does, it's subtle.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He's stoic, strict, and sarcastic. He's also a very kindhearted, morally strong, and considerate person who gives his all to guide his students who he cares for from the bottom of his heart.
* TearsOfJoy: [[spoiler:Heine and Viktor finally tell the princes the full story of Heine's criminal past and how he met the king when saving him from his own mafia subordinates. The princes are only relieved that Heine stabbing Viktor was a false charge and make clear they're still happy to have Heine for their tutor with no importance of who he was before. Heine turns his back and faces the wall. The princes see no tears when they check his face... But the reader does see the tear drops in the floor after everyone leaves the room.]]
* TerribleArtist: Art is the one thing he doesn't excel at.
* TrashOfTheTitans: Heine is naturally messy and his room is filled with piles of books and other such things, which sent the princes in shock as they discovered.
* VocalDissonance: The anime gives him an adult voice that matches his actual age, but comes at odds with his childlike body.
* WouldntHurtAChild: His personal philosophy is not never lay a finger on those younger than him. He restrains Fuchs with minimal force and even saves him from collateral damage, simply because he is a child with a bad lot in life.

!Main Princes
[[folder: Tropes that apply to all four]]
* BreakingTheFellowship: [[spoiler:As of Ch. 53, they've all gone their own ways: Licht leaves the palace to live outside and pursue working at the cafe full-time, Bruno goes on an international exchange to Orosz, and Kai departs for a month for military training. Meanwhile, Leonhard stays behind at the palace.]]
* EndearinglyDorky: They're all rather quirky and occasionally lacking in common sense, but in a well-meaning sort of way that comes off as rather endearing.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Kai is Phlegmatic (reserved, gentle, and compassionate), Bruno is Melancholic (serious, analytical, and hard-working), Leonhard is Choleric (stubborn, short-tempered, and blunt), and Licht is Sanguine (carefree, cheerful, and sociable).
* FriendlessBackground: PlayedForLaughs. When [[NoSocialSkills Kai]] [[spoiler:returns to military school and]] manages to make a friend, the other princes are thrilled for him... only to realize [[spoiler:at the end of the chapter that, in spite of worrying about Kai, ''none of them have any friends either''.]]
* FriendlyRivalry: Despite being rivals for the throne, they're all extremely supportive of one another. When Leonhard starts missing the "friendly" part of things, the others have to make it a point to tell him that rivals doesn't mean ''enemies''.
* HiddenDepths: [[EstablishingCharacterMoment Their debuts and interviews are essentially about displaying an archetype]] and subverting it, with their subsequent spotlight chapters/episodes elaborating further.
** Kai initially seems cold and hostile, with a reputation for violence, but he's revealed to be a gentle pacifist and the only prince who fully accepted Heine from the beginning. Eventually, he's shown to have remarkable emotional fortitude, with the willingness to face those who might hurt him being the backbone of his development.
** Bruno seems like a haughty know-it-all, but turns out to be a humble student who's elated to have a tutor who can actually ''teach'' him for once. Furthermore, in spite of seeming to be the most competent prince, he's actually one of the most insecure.
** Leonhard, like Bruno, appears rather arrogant at first, and while in some ways he really ''is'' that cocky, he's also much more kindhearted and childish than he seems. And, BookDumb he may be, he has a natural sense of inventiveness that even Bruno envies.
** Licht comes off as flighty and irresponsible, but he's also surprisingly perceptive and observant, such as correctly guessing that Heine isn't exactly a normal tutor, and being able to see through his sleight-of-hand trick after seeing it only once. In addition, he loves his job as a waiter and takes it very seriously, and genuinely appreciates everything he's learned while working there. He's also stated to look up to his father and his boss at the cafe for both of them being hardworking men who take their jobs seriously, and wants to be like them.
* KingIncognito: For safety reasons, they hide their identities as royalty whenever they're wandering around town.
* ModestRoyalty: Typically, they just wear their fairly plain uniforms.
* PrettyBoy: They're all remarkably good-looking, with Heine commenting on how it's as if they stepped out of a painting.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: None of them quite have enough influence to be this just yet, but they're all aiming to be this trope.
* SharpDressedMan: Their civilian outfits.
* ShelteredAristocrat: Simply put, Licht is the only one to have walked around town, and even ''he's'' rather clueless about how commoners actually live.
* TerribleArtist: When Heine asked them to make a portrait of Adele for their art class, Licht's picture was the only one that managed to depict a ''human''.
* WellDoneSonGuy: They all want to make their father proud.

[[folder: Kai von Granzreich]]
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kai_von_glanzreich.png]]
-->'''Voiced by:''' Yuuya Asato (Japanese), Creator/DamanMills (English)

The second prince. He appeared menacing, but is actually extremely gentle and shy with no social skill at all.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: The anime takes his light brown hair and makes it a very pale blond instead. With that said, his hair does appear blond in later illustrations, making the brown hair a potential case of EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference.
* AllLovingHero: The only prince who's happy to see their [[AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents father]]--exaggerated to the extent where Heine notes that it's less Kai is strong-hearted as it is that he, er, sees things on a galactic scale. Also, he's the only prince who claims to like [[AloofBigBrother Eins]].
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Though his family loves him dearly, he's ostracized by others as they all fear him, in a combination of him having the FaceOfAThug and his ill reputation.
* AnimalLover: He loves animals, especially the soft and fluffy ones.
* ArrangedMarriage: He's engaged to Beatrix because it has been decided by their families.
* BetterWithNonHumanCompany: He is shy and unsure around anyone who isn't his family, but animals seem to be naturally drawn to him.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's normally the AllLovingHero among the princes. With that said, hurting those he cares about is a BerserkButton for him, and if you value your well-being, you'd do well to avoid pressing it.
* BigBrotherInstinct: [[spoiler:Fuchs found out the hard way why hurting Bruno in front of him is ''not'' a good idea.]]
* BigBrotherWorship: Unlike his younger brothers, Kai is very fond of Eins even though Eins grew so distant of the family because he remembers Eins was a kinder brother when he was a child and he was one of the few people who could understand what Kai wanted to say without Kai even trying to say it.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: He can single-handedly carry a statue larger than he is tall, much to the shock (horror?) of everyone around him.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: He's often off in his own world.
* CoatCape: He wears his jacket over his shoulder like a cape.
* CutenessProximity: He loves cute and soft things/people.
* DeathGlare: What the servants think he's giving them.
* FaceOfAThug: He's a very nice guy, but because he looks like he's always scowling, everyone except for his family is initially too scared to approach him.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Animals tend to surround him when he goes outside.
* GentleGiant: He's the biggest and physically strongest of the princes. Despite his naturally scary eyes, he's a sweetheart.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: [[spoiler:He breaks his oath of nonviolence to give Eins a punch in the face for trying to kill himself and give up his position of heir to the throne just because he's ashamed of himself for spending almost every day crying over his ex-fiancée.]]
* HidingBehindYourBangs: His hair hides his left eye to show his socially awkward and quiet nature.
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: He adores cute things, especially fluffy animals, and is an expert at making flower crowns.
* KissingCousins: He's engaged to Beatrix, who's a cousin on his mother's side.
* LazyBum: It's less apparent in later chapters, but early on, he apparently finds it tiring to even ''breathe''.
* LickedByTheDog: Exaggerated. After [[spoiler:Kai's return to military school]], the other students see cats being drawn to Kai, revealing his soft side... only for him to be completely buried in them, at which point all emotions turn to concern for his well-being.
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: He unintentionally confuses the hell out of his arranged fiancée Beatrix because he keeps sending her mixed signals that make her ponder whether Kai likes her romantically or not. For example, Kai calls her a part of his family, but Beatrix is unsure if he meant he sees her as his future wife or simply his cousin.
* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: He's reputed as violent and temperamental, but is in fact an AllLovingHero and GentleGiant. Licht lampshades him being this trope at one point, calling it the "all-too-common pattern where someone you thought was scary turns out to be a gentle soul".
* ObliviousToLove: Kai seems unaware of Beatrix's romantic feelings for him. He even thinks she makes a Shadow doll for him because she likes soft things instead of ''him''.
* TheQuietOne: He's not great with words and so prefers to keep quiet, although it doesn't help his ill reputation any.
* TheSilentBob: When he was five years old, he could communicate with his older brother Eins without saying a word. It seems Eins is so smart that he could perfectly guess what Kai wanted to say from the situation and movement of his eyes alone.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Licht is rather surprised to hear that Kai did well on the competency test. Bruno, on the other hand, points out that Kai always gets good marks.
* TerseTalker: He speaks briefly and rarely says more than a few words in a sentence.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: To an extent. Though he admits that he can't forgive Fuchs, he's still willing to give him another chance as that's the kind of kingdom he wants: one where anyone can start over.
* TheUnintelligible: He's rather soft-spoken and mumbles sometimes. For instance, his first impression on Heine appears to be him saying "Get lost". However, he was actually saying "I hope we get along".
* TheUnSmile: His attempts at smiling always make people freak out because he ends up looking like he wants to kill someone.

The third prince. Exceptionally brilliant and the most serious of the four princes. After Heine proves him how worthy he is as their tutor, Bruno becomes his {{fanboy}}.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Like Kai, he has brown hair but is blond in the anime--though like Kai, his hair becomes increasingly lighter in illustrations as time goes on, making it unclear exactly what shade he's supposed to have/if the anime is actually a change.
* AngerBornOfWorry: When Kai gets sick from eating berries in the garden, Bruno blows up at him for worrying him at his brother collapsing.
* AnimalsHateHim: Much to his dismay, when he's the only one at the petting zoo with no luck feeding the animals.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: Despite Licht having told him earlier that he wished Bruno wasn't his brother, Bruno makes it very clear that [[VitriolicBestBuds no matter how much he and Licht may fight]], Licht will always be his dear brother.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Not so obvious as Kai, but he cares a lot for the younger siblings. [[spoiler: In the manga he once almost went to town in the middle of the night to look for Licht, after the latter didn't come back for dinner after an argument]].
* BigBrotherMentor: Bruno ''tries'' to help Leonhard study, but his brother's exaggerated BigBrotherWorship causes him to lose focus whenever Bruno says something smart instead of trying to understand what he says.
* BookSmart: He's the most academically accomplished of the four princes and aces the test Heine gives him in their first meeting.
* BrainyBrunette: Brown hair unlike his siblings (blond in the anime, but as a notably darker shade and so still giving the impression of this trope), and the resident TeenGenius.
* BrokenAce: The most distinguished of the four, with perfect grades, respect he's earned for the papers he publishes, and someone whom his brothers depend on--Leonhard in particular views him as perfect. Inside, though, Bruno's terrified that HardWorkHardlyWorks and hates that he's secretly a GreenEyedMonster even towards his siblings.
* BullyMagnet: [[spoiler:He was hated and bullied in military academy due to other students resenting him for being a prince.]]
* DefeatMeansRespect: Humorously exaggerated. After Heine beats him in every test he could come up with, while showing him along the way that he still has much to learn, Bruno begins to call him "master", and practically hero-worships him.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Bruno is a stickler for manners, tidiness, and duty, whereas Licht is just about the opposite of all those things (though, unbeknownst to Bruno, he's not ''actually'' as lazy as he seems).
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Though he tends not to be open about it, his self-confidence is actually rather shaky. Ch. 23/Episode 7 has him often initially assume he failed when he in fact succeeded, and he doesn't seem to be completely aware of just how much he's done for Leonhard until Leonhard lays it out for him.
* HumbleHero: Despite his many accomplishments, he is very aware that he isn't a genius like Eins and that, had he been born a commoner, he would have been an ordinary man.
* LonelyRichKid: Not quite ''lonely'', but [[spoiler:being royalty did him no favors in military academy]] and it's eventually revealed that he hasn't entirely gotten over it and is understandably wary of trying to befriend any peers his age.
* TheMagnificent: According to his epilogue, Bruno was lauded posthumously as "Bruno the Wise" [[spoiler:because of his achievements as a professor]].
* NeatFreak: Obsesses over how books should be placed on a shelf, and refuses to have a game of chess until the chess set is spotless.
* NoSocialSkills: He has no issues with public speaking or anything in a professional capacity, but he can be rather awkward in a more casual context.
* TheResenter: His self-admitted FatalFlaw is that he gets easily jealous and bitter towards more talented people. However, he does his best to keep it at check.
* TheSmartGuy: His superior intellect is admired by his brothers, and in particular, by Leonhard, who plays the opposite trope TheFool.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: The most studious of his brothers, and wears glasses.
* StoicSpectacles: He wears glasses and tends to be one of the more down-to-earth princes ([[NotSoAboveItAll most of the time, anyway]]).
* TeamDad: ''And'' TeamMom, depending on the context. He frequently takes it upon himself to fuss over his siblings--Kai included--whether that means lecturing them (see: half his interactions with Licht) or looking after them.
* TeenGenius: He's already giving speeches at universities at sixteen.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Licht, because of their very different personalities and outlooks in life. They are the only brothers who have had serious fights with each other.

The fourth prince. A beautiful young man with ego as high as the mountain. While he is very athletic, his academic level is lower than that of an elementary student.
----
* BaitAndSwitchCharacterIntro: In the first chapter, Leonhard is the first prince to greet Heine, acting very polite and charming while doing so. It takes him only one second to reveal his rude and hostile attitude to Heine, making clear he hates teachers and only wants Heine gone.
* BeautifulTears: He bursts into tears because his back itches when he's in the middle of posing for a portrait. The painter gets inspired to make a painting of Leonhard's beautiful crying face and the prince's popularity skyrockets thanks to it.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He is very protective and caring towards Adele.
* BigBrotherWorship: He idolizes his older brother Bruno.
* BookDumb: He got a score of only one point out of 100 in the first test Heine gave him. And that one point was for ''at least writing his own name right''. He didn't even know what's 1+1, thinking it was three or ''eleven''. Later on, though, Leonhard shows he has great capacity of coming up with very good ideas by looking things from another perspective and shows skill in learning languages once he starts speaking the language of Fonsein to communicate with Prince Claude.
* BrainlessBeauty: Being acclaimed as the owner of the most beautiful face on the entire kingdom, Leonhard, or the 'White Lily of Grannzreich', is amazed when receives the unprecedented score of 15 ''out of 100'' on a test.
* BrattyHalfPint: Due to his childishness, he can act like an insolent brat towards Heine (and occasionally others outside of his family) despite being in his teens already.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Leonhard initially comes off as someone who gave off a haughty, vain vibe in addition to his beauty, causing readers to think that he's going to be the stuck-up prince who looks down on commoners, but as the series goes on, he became more of ButtMonkey, with his BookDumb tendencies, penchant for clinging to people, and general childishness being emphasized. Lampshaded by Heine, who mentions that he completely forgot about it when he was reminded that Leonhard is actually known as the "White Lily of Granzreich" because of his beauty. Even the mangaka herself wondered how this happened in the extras that came with Volume 1. The anime resolves this by making the prior more of a quickly squashed jerkassery front.
* ChasteHero: He has zero knowledge about sex and porn. He's actually shocked when he learns he's expected to get married if he becomes king and declares he's going to create a law to help him avoid that.
* ChildishOlderSibling: With his attitude, you'd be forgiven for thinking ''he'' was the youngest prince, not Licht.
* CutenessProximity: He has a cuteness overload towards a marmot in the zoo episode.
* DefrostingIceKing: Out of all the princes, he takes the longest to warm up to Heine.
* DelayedReaction: After [[spoiler:Licht finally moves back to the palace after months of living in town]], it takes Leonhard several seconds to have the surprised reaction [[spoiler:his reunion with his brother]] deserves.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: He doesn't like bitter drinks. He even wanted to ban coffee in the kingdom.
* DumbBlond: The only prince with pure blond hair is also the BookDumb one.
* DumbJock: Where Leonhard fails at academic studies, he excels in physical activities like running, horseback riding and fencing.
* EasilyImpressed: As made apparent on the trip to the city and the visit to the zoo, Leonhard is very easy to impress by the commoner's lifestyle. Also, Bruno's attempt to teach him basic math ended up backfiring because Leonhard gets too distracted gushing about every single smart thing he says.
* FreudianExcuse: When he was a child, his first royal tutor used to beat him. This is why he hated teachers before he bonded with Heine.
* GreenEyedMonster: He's briefly jealous when he learns that Heine has had pupils before the princes. To a lesser but more consistent extent, he tends to fume a tad whenever [[BigBrotherWorship Bruno's]] giving someone else attention or praise.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He inherited his father's blond hair. He's known as the most beautiful of the princes and has a very kind heart.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: In his first meeting with Heine, Leonhard acts like the haughtiest and most condescending of the princes to his new tutor. Soon, however, Heine finds Leonhard's diary where he records all his mistakes, discovering the prince has very low self-esteem and thinks of himself as a disaster behind that arrogant front.
* InformedAttractiveness: He's considered the most beautiful of the princes InUniverse, even though they're all designed to be attractive.
* KiddieKid: He's fifteen, but his emotional maturity is that of an elementary school kid.
* KindheartedSimpleton: He's supremely simpleminded and sucks at studying, yet is a good and kindhearted guy once you look past his bratty tendencies.
* LiteralMinded: Every time he's called the White Lily to his face, all he does is insist that he's not a plant, apparently unaware that he's being ''complimented''.
* LovableJock: He has tons of trophies because of his athletic accomplishments and is a very sweet guy when he stops acting like a brat.
* MadnessMantra: When preparing his speech for Founding Day, Leonhard is the only prince who doesn't seem too stressed out... Until Heine checks the draft of his speech and all it says is "torte torte torte" for several pages.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: He's the only prince who opposes ''strongly'' to letting his little sister Adele be set up in an ArrangedMarriage and sent to another kingdom. He eventually meets Adele's intended fiancé Prince Claude, but the boy is such a sweet kid that Leonhard can't say anything negative about him and eventually admits having him for a younger brother wouldn't be bad at all. While he's still not fond of the idea of his sister getting married, he's going to save his protests for when Adele and Claude are older and decide if they do want to get married.
* NoSocialSkills: Struggles with even basic manners (and knows it), and when volunteering to help Kai with the latter's own lack of people skills, Leonhard admits that he's not good at socializing with others either.
* PickyEater: He hates carrots and bell pepper. He developed the habit of placing his vegetables in Kai's plates without Kai realizing it.
* ProneToTears: Leonhard is quick to put on the waterworks when he is upset, flustered or happy.
* RichInDollarsPoorInSense: He doesn't even understand the basics about the use of money. Heine points out that if Leonhard weren't born a royal, he wouldn't have been able to survive.
* RoyalBrat: He initially gives the impression of being a bratty prince because of his very rude and arrogant attitude towards Heine who even labeled him the "Everest-Pride Prince". It gets quickly subverted; Leonhard was only acting that way because of his personal disdain for teachers and as soon as Heine gains his trust, he quits the bratty attitude.
* SimpleMindedWisdom: He's incredibly BookDumb, but his simplistic and open-minded outlook allows him to come up with innovating ideas and options others aren't capable of even considering due to being too preoccupied with laws and customs.
* SweetTooth: He adores sweets and desserts.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He ''loves'' torte.
* {{Tsundere}}: A non-romantic example of a Harsh (Tsun) type. Leonhard starts off as an arrogant brat and initially rejects Heine the most strongly out of the princes because he views all educators as his enemies. Once he realizes Heine is a good and encouraging teacher, he comes to respect and accept him, but Heine's teasing can still make him annoyed.
* UpperClassEquestrian: He got good at horseback riding while he tried to escape from his previous royal tutors.
* WideEyedIdealist: When the princes are talking about the sort of kingdom they want to create, Leonhard says, without a hint of irony, that he wants to beat up all the bad guys and make a kingdom full of good people. The other princes can't avoid being amused at his simplicity.

The fifth and youngest prince. A playful, charismatic womanizer, but is also surprisingly hardworking. He has a second identity known as Richard, a waiter at Cafe Mitter Meyer.
----
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Occasionally, he annoys Bruno and Leonhard. Especially Bruno sees him as immature and irresponsible because of his flaky behavior, although both Bruno and Leonhard start respecting him more after they learn of his part-time job.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: See Bruno's section. On Licht's part, he breaks into tears and offers Bruno an apology gift, deeply regretting what he said.
* BigLittleBrother: He's taller than his older brother Leonhard. Licht's boss points out Leonhard looks like the younger brother.
* TheCharmer: Known for having a bright, charismatic personality and being popular with women.
* ChivalrousPervert: He's very fond of the ladies, to the extent of secretly owning porn magazines, but he's also the sort who wouldn't hesitate to protect one from harm.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: His charms attract males too. A male ostrich, but still.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: With Bruno, whom Licht is the complete opposite of (minus the part where Licht's a lot more hardworking than he'd care to admit to others, at least). He's light-hearted and playful, next to Bruno's serious and studious attitude.
* IChooseToStay: [[spoiler:He decides to leave the palace and has no interest to become king, but instead live independently and as a normal person working as a waiter.]]
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: Of sorts. He's ''very'' attached to his image as the "cool playboy" and, despite actually being rather serious and hardworking at his job, seems to think that being viewed as so would be a nightmare. Heine's fond of teasing him by calling him "ordinary".
* LivingADoubleLife: To his family and friends, he's the flighty and fun-loving prince, but to the customers and employees of Cafe Mitter Meyer, he's Richard, a hardworking waiter.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He has rather long hair compared to the rest of his family and is just as pretty as his older brothers.
* NonIdleRich: Even though he's a prince, he works part-time at a cafe just because he likes it. [[spoiler:Eventually subverted when he starts working full-time--after leaving the palace, meaning that he's now completely independent and actually ''poorer'' than Maximilian, his guard.]]
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Licht is very fond of hugging and getting close to others.
* OnlySaneMan: He's not without his quirks, but he's at least usually ''intentionally'' weird, whereas his siblings are blissfully so, and in fact has rather ordinary sensibilities (as Heine loves to poke fun at). When the princes are to draw a portrait of Adele, his is the only normal one, compared to Kai's abstract painting, Leonhard's childishly cute one, and Bruno's InUniverse AccidentalNightmareFuel.
* PartingWordsRegret: Downplayed, but [[spoiler:though he denies caring when Heine brings it up, it's evident he wishes he got to make up with Bruno before Bruno left for his international exchange in Orosz]].
* PrimalFear: He's scared of animals and does not come near or touch them, not even their family pet Shadow, since they are very affectionate toward him.
* PurelyAestheticGlasses: He wears some glasses he stole from Bruno when secretly working on a cafe under the alias of Rich.
* SicklyChildGrewUpStrong: He was very sickly and weak as a child. As a teenager, he's very healthy and lively.
* TheSlacker: His contribution in driving off all of the previous tutors? They found it impossible to motivate him to study, as he'd rather goof off instead.
* TheSocialExpert: "Expert" might be an exaggeration, but he prides himself on being able to read people and his customer service skills, and he's notably the only one among the four princes who doesn't suffer from NoSocialSkills.
* WhenYouComingHomeDad: He resents their father for never being around whenever he was sick as a child, though he eventually comes to understand that Viktor was genuinely too busy to, rather than uncaring.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: He's fourteen, but definitely doesn't look like it, and the way he acts doesn't help, either.

The King of Grannzreich and father to the princes and princess. Though he seems strict and no-nonsense, he’s that type of overly affectionate father.
----
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Whenever he sees his children, Viktor goes into over-affectionate DotingParent mode. There's a reason why none of them (sans Kai) are elated to see him, let alone in front of Heine.
* BaitAndSwitchCharacterIntro: When we're first introduced to the king, his four sons look very nervous about meeting him, implying he's probably a very strict father. They step into his room and he quietly stares at his sons... And starts shedding tears at the joy of seeing his dear children. Turns out his sons were so nervous because they found it embarrassing to have their father acting like a DotingParent in front of Heine.
* DotingParent: He cries from joy just by seeing his children, and can't even bring himself to spar with Leonhard.
* InterclassFriendship: Heine is a commoner [[spoiler:and former criminal boss]], but King Viktor considers him his best and dearest friend. Heine [[FriendshipDenial doesn't agree that they're friends]], but does return the sentiment deep down.
* FamilyEyeResemblance: All of his children inherited his blue eyes.
* TheGoodKing: He's responsible for leading his country into prosperity. The fact that he's such a good king is part of why his sons are determined to follow in his footsteps.
* GoodParents: Although his job as king keeps him busy, he still manages to be a respectable and loving father who would give anything in the world for his beloved children.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He's a benevolent, noble, and kindhearted king with blond hair.
* MasterSwordsman: Reputed as the strongest swordsman in the country.
* MumLooksLikeASister: A male example. Viktor appears as young as his sons. At one point, he admits that he and his first son look like brothers, with Eins seeming the ''older'' of the two.
* ProneToTears: He's prone to crying a river around his sons.
* PuppyDogEyes: In episode 6, he flashes these at [[spoiler: the owner of Licht's cafe]], effectively causing the latter to [[spoiler: hire him for a few hours.]]
* TakingTheBullet: In the anime flashbacks exclusively, he [[spoiler:shielded Heine when a guard fired a gun at him, mistakenly believing that Heine kidnapped Viktor.]] He did come out fine, [[spoiler:but it costed Heine a time in prison and gave him the 'criminal' reputation.]]

----
* AbdicateTheThrone: At the end of the manga, [[spoiler:Viktor chooses Eins as the next king. However, Eins doesn't believe he's qualified to be king after he tried to take his own life over a woman. Eins rules as king for only seven years and then cedes the throne to his younger brother Leonhard.]]
* AloofBigBrother: He appears to be his younger brothers' superior as a future king in every aspect and doesn't seem to have any interest in having a good relationship with them. His younger brothers don't even know him that well because Eins frequently spends several months away from home and when he's around, he chooses to hang out with his friend Ernst over his family. [[spoiler:After they stop his suicide attempt and accept him despite his flaws, Eins embraces his brothers as his family and rivals.]]
* BerserkButton: People thinking he looks older than his father is a touchy subject for him.
* CannotTalkToWomen: [[spoiler:Ever since he broke off his engagement with Matilda, Eins can't talk to young women without crying and running away because of how much he misses Matilda.]]
* ChildhoodFriends: With Ernst Rosenberg, his high steward. In fact, he spent more time with Ernst than his own brothers.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: He has black hair and pale skin. Compared to his siblings with lighter hair colors, Eins is very suspicious and intimidating with his stern personality, although he eventually turns out to not be really bad.
* TheFirstCutIsTheDeepest: [[spoiler:He broke up with Matilda, even though he truly loved her, for the sake of her artistic dream and happiness. His broken heart prevents him from starting a new relationship and this has ended up ruining every next attempt of arranging a marriage for him. According to the epilogue, Eins never gets married, implying that he never fully gets over Matilda.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Ernst have been inseparable since they were children.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler:He fell deeply in love with his first fiancée Princess Matilda, but he broke off their engagement so she could pursue her dream of becoming an artist, even though it broke his heart.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Eins doesn't mean to be rude, but he's bad at expressing himself and many of his gestures are easily misunderstood when he doesn't have bad intentions at all. For example, when he returns home for the first time in months, he greets his brothers by throwing their welcome bouquet to him away. The brothers think Eins is belittling them, but the truth is [[spoiler:throwing away the bouquet was an accident and Eins was merely saying there's no need of formalities among family. He doesn't even think about how his brothers viewed his actions until they point it out much later.]]
* InterruptedSuicide: [[spoiler:He's terribly depressed both because of breaking up with Matilda and feeling inadecuate as a successor to the throne because he can't get over her. Eventually, Eins runs away to the royal family's villa with a gun. He would have probably shoot himself if Heine, his brother, and Ernst haven't arrived at the villa to stop him.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He gives off a very unpleasant impression for acting distant, dismissive, and rude towards his own family. Later on, he's revealed to have a softer side, mainly through his friendship with Ernst. [[spoiler:He eventually acknowledges his younger brothers as rivals worthy of his respect after they stop him from committing suicide. He also apologizes to Leonhard for calling him a dunce and not taking him seriously as a rival once he realizes the value of Leonhard's sincerity and ability to think outside the box, although he refuses to repeat himself when he realizes Leonhard wasn't listening to his apology.]]
* ThePerfectionist: He has very high standards for himself as the eldest prince expected to succeed the throne. [[spoiler:The simple fact that he can't have a successful engagement because he hasn't gotten over Matilda is something that he views as inexcusable for a king who must produce heirs. This put him into a very bad state of depression until Heine makes him understand it's alright to not be perfect.]]
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: {{Subverted|Trope}}. [[spoiler:At first, he saw his engagement to Princess Matilda as a political marriage. However, it was that same love what drove Eins to break up with Matilda so she could pursue her dream of becoming a painter.]]
* PerpetualFrowner: His default expression is a stern frown.
* PetTheDog: The first hint that he isn't that bad is how he's shown to be respectful towards his grandmother, accept her tea party offer and refuse to smoke in her presence.
* ProneToTears: [[spoiler:His most embarrassing secret is that he cries a river whenever he's emotionally distressed. He gets it from his father's side. 285* SharedFamilyQuirks: [[spoiler:Turns out he's the only prince who cries easily, a trait inherited from his father and grandmother. In his case, he cries every time he thinks about his ex-fiancée.]]
* SingleTargetSexuality: [[spoiler:He knows he should find a new fiancée since he needs to produce an heir, but he just can't bring himself to love any woman but Matilda. The epilogue pretty much confirms Matilda is the only love of his life given that he never gets married.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He seems very cold, aloof, and unapproachable at first glance. Later appearances reveal he's far from heartless and does care for others in his own way.
* TalentedButTrained: Everyone calls Eins a genius and he's indeed very smart and talented, but Ernst truly admires him because he knows better than anyone that Eins does put a lot of effort into cultivating the skills he needs to be a good king.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He is as attractive as his father and brothers, but unlike his blond and blue eyed family he has dark hair.
* WhenHeSmiles: Ernst blushed a bit when he saw Eins' smile for the first time when they were kids.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Mild example. He's 23 years old, but looks much more mature because of his stern expression. He dislikes being told that he looks older than his own father.

----
* DotingGrandparent: She adores her grandchildren and thinks they're the most wonderful in the world. Heine can even tell how doting she is when they first meet.
* GrandeDame: She ''is'' the mother of the King, and such position obviously comes with authority and wealth. However, unlike other examples who are strict, uptight or straight-up a RichBitch, Maria is simply an aged ProperLady with a mix of GrannyClassic.
* MoralityPet: Eins has a notable soft spot for his grandma as she's the only member of the family who he treats with respect and consideration.
* PinkIsFeminine: She's almost always seen in a pink dress.
* PrimAndProperBun: Befitting her high status, she wears her hair in an elegant chignon.

* CuteClumsyGirl: Said to be clumsy as she trips a lot when she is over-excited.
* GoodParents: According to her children, she seems to be a loving mother.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: She has hip-length wavy dark hair, ivory skin and is a gorgeous woman.

* CoolBigSis: She is one to the younger princes, having looked after them when they were younger.
* DoggedNiceGirl: She is persistent in trying to spend more time with Kai to demonstrate her love for him, but he appears to be ObliviousToLove.
* HatesWearingDresses: She dislikes wearing frilly dresses because she doesn't think they look good in her.

* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: She is quite enamored with Kai and is content to be his fiancee. Her only concern is that she isn't sure if Kai likes her romantically too.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Every chapter focused on her is about her attempts to make Kai see her womanly charm or wanting to do something romantic with him, only for Kai to not get it. It doesn't help the number of chapters she appears in can be counted in one hand.
* SheCleansUpNicely: After the picnic, the Queen Mother offers her a change of clothes into a frilly dress that Beatrix thought she'd look absurd in. However, in truth, she's ''goddamn'' gorgeous and even Kai looks impressed.

Eins's high steward. He has been behind many of the obstacles the four younger princes encountered in their path to the throne.
----
* BastardBastard: Downplayed and eventually subverted. He's the illegitimate son of a count and plays the role of a manipulative antagonist for a good part of the series, but his nature isn't one that can be called evil or malicious.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: When he was a child, Ernst didn't know the first thing about being a nobleman because he lived as a commoner in his early childhood and picked fights with Eins hoping he would be praised if he won. Instead of fighting him, Eins taught Ersnt everything he would need to know to be a count and a gentleman, shaping him into who he is today. Out of gratitude, Ernst made the decision of making Eins the king because he believes Eins can do the same good he did for him to the country.
* BeneathTheMask: He acts like a perfect gentleman now, but his true self is an irritable and abrasive guy with poor manners. Eins taught him everything he knows about etiquette and shaped him into a proper count, but he drops the act and goes back to bad habits during moments of stress.
* BerserkButton: The only time he drops the nonchalant act and becomes openly hostile is when Heine mentions Viktor doesn't consider Eins a suitable successor to the throne.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: He acts friendly and polite, but is actually very manipulative and crafty, causing troubles to the other princes.
* ChildhoodFriends: He has been friends with Eins since they were around 11 years old.
* ClassyCane: He's almost always seen carrying a cane. Since he obviously doesn't need it, he's only trying to look classy as a count should be.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He has been by Eins' side since they were children and has made it his goal to see the day Eins is enthroned as king come true.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's shady as hell and definitely antagonistic towards the main characters, especially Heine, because he views them as enemies in his goal of making Eins the king. However, his motives for making Eins king aren't based on something like greed or wish for status; he's genuinely loyal to Eins who is a dear childhood friend of his and respects his qualities as a leader. Eventually, Heine and the other princes make him understand he shouldn't see them as enemies that he should get out of the way, but rivals who respect and support each other, which leads Ernst to ask their help in [[spoiler:handling Eins' depression]].
* ManipulativeBastard: Throughout the story, Ernst has seen to be manipulating behind the scenes to trip the four other princes. Exposing Licht's job to Viktor, allowing a Professor faraway from the palace to invite Bruno to leave the palace and study alongside him, there’s almost nothing he cannot do. When Heine proves himself to be an obstacle, he even contacted Queen Titania in order to drive Heine out of the palace.
* PerpetualSmiler: He keeps many secrets under his never-shut-down smile.
* RageBreakingPoint: When he's finally convinced to let Heine and the princes visit Eins so they can understand what's happening to him, Eins isn't answering the door at his bedroom. Ersnt gets fed up of it and reverts fully back to his old violent self and kicks down the door [[spoiler:only to find out Eins ran away]].
* RedEyesTakeWarning: His deep red eyes make him look unsettling.
* RoyalBastard: He's the illegitimate son of a count who took him in out of need for an heir.
* SecretKeeper: For a long time, he's the only one who knows the truth about Eins' "condition" that drives him to lock himself at his bedroom for days. [[spoiler:It's because Eins is depressed due to a broken heart and disappointment with himself for not being about to get over it and look for a new fiancée.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Towards Prince Eins. When Ernst wanted to prove to his father that he is the rightful heir to the Rosenberg family despite being [[BastardBastard illegitimate]], Eins helped him study and taught him the manners he needed to have as a noble and one day he succeeded as the next Count. This is why he is very adamant to return the favor and make Eins the next king.
* VicariouslyAmbitious: He wants Eins to be king and tries sabotaging the other princes so that Eins stays the best candidate to the throne.
* VillainInAWhiteSuit: Ernst is a good-looking gentleman who's always dressed well in white attire, complete with a top hat. And he's so far the biggest threat to both the princes and Heine.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: White/light pink hair, and as much as he may deny it, it's clear he's involved in trying to sabotage the four princes.
