Crona is Ragnarok's meister of [[AmbiguousGender intentionally unclear gender]], and initially worked for Medusa due to being a {{Tykebomb}}. Crona is unusual for a meister because they and Ragnarok share the same body, which is a source of {{Squick}} for the heroes. Crona alternated between being homicidally insane and fearful when under Medusa, later showing a nicer side when at the DWMA.
------
* AdaptationDyeJob: Their hair was pink in the manga but purple in the anime (though there are a few manga illustrations where it's purple, it's usually pink).
* AdaptationalHeroism: Due to the anime ending much before the manga and diverging from its storyline, Crona ends firmly on the side of the DWMA by the end of it, rather than going through major SanitySlippage and [[spoiler:fusing with Asura.]]
* AmbiguousGender: Crona's gender is unspecified and besides Patty asking once, characters basically ignore it. The author has refused to answer it as well.
* AmbiguousInnocence: [[spoiler: In the penultimate chapter, they confessed to Maka to not understand what was wrong with their actions. Which, to be clear, had included killing people and eating their souls and trying to destroy the world. Despite this, they decide to save the world simply to make Maka happy.]]
* AndTheAdventureContinues: [[spoiler: At the end of the manga, Crona seals Asura and themselves, yet both Crona and Maka both express the belief that they'll meet again. There's no idea given as to how, leaving this the biggest loose end of the manga.]]
* AntiAntiChrist: Medusa intended for Crona to become the new kishin for the goal of enveloping the world into madness and terror ForScience. [[spoiler: they ultimately reject this path in both the anime and the manga, though how they reject it varies between the versions]]
* AntiVillain: [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains The Woobie Variety]].
* AxCrazy: Seems to be this, as of recent manga chapters. Yeah... [[CooldownHug It's going to take a lot more than a hug to fix them now]], Maka.
* BadassAdorable: Admit it -- even during their [[AxCrazy scarier moments]], Crona manages to inspire [[ImTakingHerHomeWithMe the desire to hug them]] out of a good portion of the audience.
* BarrierMaiden: [[spoiler:Attempts this in the penultimate chapter. Confronting their fear, Crona decides to use Brew to trap Asura on the moon.]]
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: [[spoiler: Sacrifices themselves because Maka was the very first person to be nice to them and it would mean she would get to live afterwards]].
* BigBadWannabe: [[spoiler:Manages to kill Medusa and beat Noah, but all of two chapters after apparently absorbing Asura he takes over and does the reverse.]]
* BloodyMurder: Crona can use all their blood as a weapon. Heck, their blood [[ThePowerOfBlood is a weapon!]]
* BodyHorror:
** Taken for granted, but doesn't become fully apparent until chapter 68, when we see that [[spoiler:between the corruption of Medusa, Ragnarok, and the Black Clown, their soul has become twisted and deformed almost beyond recognition]].
** When Ragnarok was still huge, he always forced his way out fully formed from Crona's back, in a pretty clearly painful way.
** Even chibified Ragnarok managed to make Crona wince a bit while forcing himself out.
* BrownNote: Their poetry is so depressing that it makes ANYONE, even the normally hyperactive Black Star, sulk in a corner wishing they were never born.
* BullyAndWimpPairing: The wimp to Ragnarok's bully.
* CallingTheOldManOut: After Medusa [[spoiler:shows Crona affection for the first time in their life and even apologizes for her cruel treatment, Crona quite epically [[FreakOut freaks out]] and rants about how she made them throw away everything, and how they too was "[[ParentalAbandonment thrown away]]," all the while stabbing her to a bloody pulp.]] [[ThanatosGambit And it was all part of Medusa's plan.]] The anime's version, [[spoiler:in which Crona tells Medusa that they are done following her, child or not, is a straighter played example.]]
* CharacterCatchphrase:
** "I don't know how to deal with this..." and "My blood is black." The former quickly turns into a MadnessMantra:
--->'''Crona:''' Kill you. Kill you. I don't know how to deal with you, so I'll kill you. Kill you. Kill you.
** And from their debut episode: "Those doors only open inward." Maka should've listened to that one...
* CharacterDevelopment: [[spoiler: Especially in the anime. Going from an insane weapon of Medusa, to the ultimate woobie, to becoming a [[CowardlyLion stronger person]] and [[CallingTheOldManOut facing Medusa, the person who tormented them all their life,]] is a hell of an achievement, character-wise.]]
* CooldownHug: Maka first connects with Crona through one, becoming their friend in this way.
* CombatTentacles: As of Chapter 96, they have Maleficent-esque thorns made of Black Blood that they use like tentacles to attack/defend/look badass.
* CowardlyLion: Has shown a willingness to stand up to and even nearly die fighting some very threatening enemies in order to help their friends. [[spoiler: Like Giriko, Medusa, and even Asura.]]
* CovertPervert: Apparently not getting motherly attention from Medusa eventually leaves Crona with some kind of boob fixation, which eventually manifests in [[spoiler: the main cast, and eventually the majority of the DWMA, catching the "Madness of Boobs" after Crona seals Asura away and making the other characters more perverted for a while.]]
* CreepyBlueEyes: They switch between pale blue and black, usually the former when they're going [[AxCrazy batshit]].
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Try everything before [[spoiler: befriending Maka.]]
* DarkMagicalGirl: [[AmbiguousGender Gender-neutral]] example. Crona is a lonely, tormented soul who deep down wants to make real connections with other human beings while being manipulated and tormented by their evil mother, Medusa. Depending on the continuity, Crona either [[EarnYourHappyEnding earns their happy ending]] and is able to forge those bonds with the other DWMA members, or [[spoiler:falls to their mother's manipulations and becomes a much larger threat that nonetheless saves the world because of their bond with Maka.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: When Maka first visits Crona's MentalWorld, Crona's shadow is having a conversation with its source. Crona's shadow asks its source a total of forty-two questions before withering and disappearing in despair because Crona has passed on answering every single one[[note]]The number 42 can be read "shini", which is the standard reading of 死に, the Japanese term for "death; dying"[[/note]]. Crona's shadow is [[SubvertedTrope ultimately restored]] when Maka befriends Crona and is seen holding hands with Maka's shadow.
* DisappearedDad: [[https://twitter.com/Atsushi_Ohkubo/status/635483756036419588 According]] to the author, when asked about who Crona's father is, he is "A man without a name", which shows that Crona does indeed have a father, at least.
* TheDragon: To Medusa before betraying her, [[spoiler:twice]].
* EarnYourHappyEnding: In the anime they deal with massive guilt from [[spoiler:betraying their friends after pulling a HeelFaceTurn. Later they fight against Medusa and nearly die saving Maka in an attempt to make up for their misdeeds. Makes you real grateful for Gecko Endings.]]
* TheEeyore: Given their upbringing, it's understandable.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Their iris and pupils sometimes are replaced by spiraling thorns, especially after [[spoiler:absorbing Asura]].
* ExpositoryPronoun: Crona uses the pronoun "boku" (a pronoun primarily used by young boys, but it's not uncommon for [[{{Bokukko}} girls to use it]] as well) to refer to themself. In their case, this serves to make it even harder to tell if [[AmbiguousGender they're a boy or a girl]].
* {{Expy}}: Crona bears a strong resemblance to Emine, the main antagonist of Ohkubo's first manga Manga/BIchi.
* {{Foil}}: You know how Maka and Soul have a [[UndyingLoyalty deep and affectionate relationship]] and defeat their enemies with [[ThePowerOfFriendship weaponized friendship]]? Crona's relationship with Ragnarok is about as far as one could go in the other direction. Their relationship with Medusa makes a second contrast, with them desperately seeking approval from their {{Jerkass}} mother. Also Crona is Maka's rival and after their HeelFaceTurn becomes extremely attached to her.
* {{Forgiveness}}: A major part of Crona's storyline in either version becomes seeking forgiveness for [[spoiler: betraying their friends.]] While Maka is quick to forgive any misdeeds, others require more convincing. Marie, in the anime [[spoiler:says that she'll be unable to forgive them until they rescue Stein (which she later regrets saying).]] The manga has Crona explicitly state [[spoiler:that their action in letting themselves be imprisoned alongside Asura is an attempt to "put burdens on [their] heart" in order to return.]]
* AFriendInNeed: One of the main driving forces of the story is Maka's desire to save Crona from Medusa's machinations. [[spoiler:In the end, Crona manages to recover their sanity from the Madness thanks to Maka's friendship, but they're left on the moon keeping Asura sealed. Maka, however, makes it very clear that she has every intention to come back and ultimately rescue Crona.]]
* FriendlessBackground: Had never even been shown kindness until [[spoiler: Maka befriends them, prompting a HeelFaceTurn.]]
* GuineaPigFamily: Medusa's.
* HartmanHips: Not helping the "what gender is Crona anyway" discussions at all.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: [[spoiler:Ultimately does a full heel->face->heel->face turn in both the manga and anime, albeit in incredibly different ways.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:In the penultimate chapter, they overcome the Madness long enough to use Brew to seal the Kishin away. While still inside the Kishin. The anime moment of jumping in front of Medusa's vector arrow to save Maka, while getting hit themself also counts.]]
* HumanoidAbomination:
** [[spoiler:Has been gradually edging closer to this as the Black Blood nears completion.]]
** [[spoiler:Later, they officially become this when they absorb Asura.]]
* IWillWaitForYou: [[spoiler:Indicates this to Maka when she asks them to wait for her to return to them.]]
* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler: Voluntarily lets themself be trapped in a ball of mad blood, knowingly suffering a similar fate to what they inflicted on a city full of people.]]
* ItIsDehumanizing: While everyone else in the English dub uses "he" for Crona for simplicity (and acknowledge they actually don't know), Medusa, who's the one person who would actually know which one to use, uses either "my child" or, more disturbingly, "it". This says ''a lot'' and also counts as a {{Woolseyism}}.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Their relationship with Maka (if any potential signs of romance are in fact meant to be interpreted platonically).
* LikeASonToMe: (Though the 'son' part is up for debate) Seems to have this relationship with Marie, who has been a bit of a ParentalSubstitute for them, being the most motherly towards Crona out of all her students (given that they are the closest thing she has to children, acting as a TeamMom), not showing as much kindness and friendliness to any other character in the series. [[spoiler: This gets tested in the anime, when Crona's betrayal is revealed, she has a hard time forgiving them, saying she would only do so when Stein was returned from Medusa's control and madness. she later regretted saying this, as Crona was severely injured as a result of the battle with her, but Stein reassures her that Crona will forgive her, cementing the bond between them]]
* LookWhatICanDoNow: As of Chapter 96, they can easily defeat Black Star, the DWMA's strongest student. This is noted by both Ox and Maka.
* LovecraftianSuperpower: They can weaponize the body horror monstrosity that lives in their blood.
* LoveRedeems: Of a friendship variety. Makas kindness is the reason they wanted to make a HeelFaceTurn and join the DWMA. [[spoiler: This is why they stop Asura and seal him away on the moon with themselves, not to save the world, just Maka]]
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: They seem to have this relationship with Medusa.
-->'''Crona:''' She said it was OK to eat the human souls. I don't see what was wrong with it if she said it was OK.
* NiceGuy: Shown to be rather kindhearted, if nervous when not under Medusa's influence.
* NervousWreck: Thanks to being raised to become a new Kishin by Medusa. They're even quite jittery when they're AxeCrazy.
* NoodlePeople: While all of the characters are drawn to look rather skinny, they're the most obvious example. [[spoiler: And it gets worse as they edge closer to insanity]]...
* OnlyOneName: Oddly, the character is only referred to as "Crona", never "Crona Gorgon".
* ParentalAbandonment: Why any ''Manga/SoulEater'' fan who looks beyond Medusa's MagnificentBastard status wants to strangle her for being a grievously bad mother.
* PronounTrouble: Since Japanese doesn't have to use gendered pronouns, none of the characters use one for Crona for the sake of AmbiguousGender issues. This plagued Creator/{{Funimation}} for the dub. Despite going with male pronouns for simplicity[[labelnote:*]]This was a few years before "they" started really catching on as singular pronoun for people of indeterminate or non-binary gender[[/labelnote]], some of the English actors and the dub director still refer to Crona as "him/her". The manga's English translation initially went with he/him as well, but in later reprints Crona is referred to as they/them instead.
* RedemptionEqualsAffliction: [[spoiler: Lets themself become trapped in a ball of mad blood alongside Asura in order to stop him for an unknown period of time. Could also be interpreted as RedemptionEqualsDeath (or eternal imprisonment), depending on whether you believe Maka eventually frees them.]]
* RoseHairedSweetie: Averted in the beginning, but played straight later on.
* SanitySlippage: Medusa's gamut of experiments on Crona is solely intended to induce this on them. [[spoiler:[[GoneHorriblyRight It worked]].]]
* SelfMadeOrphan: [[spoiler:And Medusa gives every indication that ''[[ThanatosGambit this is what she wanted]]''.]]
* ShesAManInJapan: Crona's gender is completely ambiguous in the Japanese version. The official English translations of both the anime and the manga [[DownplayedTrope minimize gendered terminology]] (for instance, Medusa only calls Crona her "child", never "son/daughter", while Marie calls Crona "a good kid"), but still use male pronouns. Reprints of the manga were changed to use exclusively they/them pronouns for Crona.
* ShrinkingViolet: Kind of a gloomy/creepy version, but still fits.
* SixthRanger: [[spoiler:When they're a Face.]]
* SixthRangerTraitor: [[spoiler:When going back to Medusa before killing her.]]
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:While ending the manga imprisoned on the moon to stop Asura,]] the Anime's GeckoEnding has Crona [[spoiler:end living happily at the DWMA with their friends after turning against Medusa.]]
* StrongerThanTheyLook: Crona's a spindly little twig, but having the Black Blood harden in their vessels means they can deceptively sustain a lot of punishment. Bladed weapons in particularly barely break their skin.
* TalkativeLoon: Normally very quiet, but turns into one of these when under Medusa's influence.
-->'''Crona:''' Oh, okay! You're saying I can kill the girl? I didn't ''realize'' that...maybe I can play with her hair first, just for a little while. Hey, everyone! These doors open inward! ''THEY ONLY OPEN ONE WAY!''
** Of course, once in a while there is useful information in Crona's rants. Maka and Soul would have done well to pay attention to, "These doors open inward," because while trying to escape from Crona, they tried to open them outward, which didn't work.
* TakingTheBullet: They [[spoiler:take a Vector Arrow for Maka, saving her life while nearly dying themselves.]]
* ThirdEye: [[spoiler: Gains one while powering up to seal Asura.]]
* {{Tykebomb}}: Raised seemingly from birth to make a new Kishin. Unlike most examples, Medusa really didn't have a clear use ''for'' a Kishin, [[ForScience she just wanted to see if she could make one.]]
* WellDoneSonGuy: This, plus fear, binds Crona to Medusa. [[spoiler:They free themself from this by killing her, but then suffers extreme guilt over killing the only bond they ever had, it doesn't help that [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Spirit rubs his bond with Maka is their face.]]]]
* WhenSheSmiles: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHRRFsKrNNg They get one in the middle of the series]].
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Could be the trope definition.
* YankTheDogsChain: [[spoiler:Right when Crona manages to find happiness at DWMA by being put in an environment that actually accepts them, they're gaslit and coerced by Medusa playing on [[IJustWantToBeLoved the poor kid's need for affection]]]].

Ragnarok is Crona's Demon Sword partner. He shares a body with his meister and loves to bully and torment them at every opportunity.
------
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: In the anime [[spoiler: when Crona jumps in front of Medusa's vector attack to save Maka, Ragnarok comes out of the resulting pool of blood saying that they're both going to die and it's all Maka's fault, "but at least stupid Crona isn't alone in the end."]]
* BlackSwordsAreBetter: Ragnarok's sword form is a solid black blade.
* BloodyMurder: He's Crona's EquippableAlly made out of BlackBlood, after all.
* BodyHorror: He was melted down in weapon form and fused into Crona's blood permanently binding them together.
* BrownNote: His screams can cause this, incapacitating his opponents or at the very least, making it harder for them to defend and attack.
* BullyAndWimpPairing: Bully to Crona's wimp.
* CartoonCreature: ''No'' clue what race of species Ragnarok is. He's only vaguely humanoid in a way more suited towards a Monster. Except he can't be a Monster because, well, only Humans have the Weapon Gene. He could be artificial, but no evidence is given towards that.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Manga only. After [[spoiler:Crona is absorbed by Asura]], Ragnarok seems to just disappear and isn't even mentioned again. In the Anime however, he remains with Crona to the series' conclusion.
* EquippableAlly: Not only is he able to turn into a sword, he really is ''Crona's blood''.
* {{Expy}}: Heavily resembles Ansem's Guardian from ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'', at least initially.
* {{Foil}}: {{Living Weapon}}s Ragnarok and Excalibur. Both have humanoid transformed states and are forceful egotists, but one is dark and the other light. Excalibur is a colossal nuisance who can be removed, but Crona is stuck with Ragnarok the bully forever. Excalibur has phenomenal power in his own right, but Ragnarok's power is mostly potential--he needs [[HumanSacrifice to beef up on souls]] before he can compete with Excalibur.
* TheImp: When depowered his bullying turns into this nature.
* {{Jerkass}}: Has been a pretty consistent one throughout all his different forms.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He has his moments; in particular, he tends to at least try and motivate Crona when they're battling people.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: After the Aracnophobia Arc, Ragnarok forms three swords, two of which resemble thin katana (with one being barbed), while the remaining sword resembles a cleaver.
* MysteriousPast: We're never given any clue as to what his life was like prior to being melted in Black Blood.
* NoMouth: His humanoid form seems to lack a mouth, at least while talking. He does have a mouth in this form, although it just seems to be for eating and scaring people.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: He fares pretty well against Giriko and knocks over a golem while in SleepModeSize! Maka even wonders how she was able to defeat him.
* PowerGivesYouWings: After absorbing the souls on the Nidhogg, he can turn into the "Black Dragon".
* ShooOutTheClowns: He's stays around for a while, but after [[spoiler:Crona killed Medusa]] he basically didn't say a word. After [[spoiler:Crona is absorbed by Asura]] he [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse disappears completely for the entire rest of the manga.]]
* SleepModeSize: Losing all of the souls he consumed made him shrink from highly muscular to even [[NoodlePeople skinnier]] and shrimpier than Crona.
* SuperScream: Many of his attacks involve screaming.
* TalkingWeapon: With giant, fleshy lips, no less.
* TokenEvilTeammate: [[spoiler:After Crona's HeelFaceTurn.]]
* {{Vibroweapon}}: He vibrates by [[SuperScream screaming]].

[[caption-width-right:704: As a Werewolf]]
-->Voiced by: Rintarou Nishi (JP), Creator/TravisWillingham (EN)

An immortal werewolf placed in jail for taking Mabaa's left eye. Despite being so dangerous and powerful, his personality is quite silly. He can also be serious and cunning when needed, but he usually isn't since he can't die.
-----
* AffablyEvil: One gets the idea that he's more "dangerously silly" than "maliciously evil" because he's a friendly guy when he's not beating you up or releasing monsters.
* BarefootCaptives: He has no shoes in his prison attire and remains so through the series.
* BreathWeapon: His Magic Eye Cannon (despite the name) has him firing a huge laser from his mouth. It's called "Magic Eye" because the energy takes the form of an glowing eye before he fires it.
* CatchPhrase: He's got at least two: the chant "Wolf, wolves, wolf, wolves," and the more informal [[GratuitousEnglish "GODDAMNSHIIIIT!"]]
%%%% "He has his moments." is not context. Please add context.
%%%%* ChivalrousPervert:
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Free originally let himself be imprisoned because he wanted to try to dig his way out of a prison with a spoon, like in the movies... Unfortunately, all the meals were served with chopsticks.
* CompleteImmortality: Free regenerates from all and any damage and doesn't age. He explicitly states that the Grand Witch Mabaa locked him up because not even she could kill him.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: As a much of an idiot he is, keep in mind the eye he stole belonged to someone who is nearly equal to Death in power and is a RealityWarper. Even for an immortal, it takes a lot of balls.
* CutleryEscapeAid: Free tries to invoke this: he allows himself to be captured because he thinks it would be cool to dig his way out with a spoon like in the movies. Unfortunately [[WrongGenreSavvy he forgot he was in a Japanese series]], and all of his meals were served with chopsticks. He ends up spending about 200 years in prison as a result.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: He didn't consider the idea of chopsticks with his "get into prison so he can break out with a spoon" thing.
* EnemyMine: Teams up with Kid to take on Mosquito during the battle of Baba Yaga Castle. They do pretty well...up until Mosquito [[BishonenLine goes to his 400-year-old form]] and stomps them. From there, it's up to Kid powering up to keep Mosquito busy while Free uses his illusion magic to get to the tower leg and blow it up.
* EpicFlail: Free has weaponized the ball and chain on his leg more than once to deadly effect. He can make it even more deadly by encasing the ball in a larger ball of ice.
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: When using the Magic Eye Cannon, an eyeball grows in the back of his throat to use his BreathWeapon.
* GeniusBruiser: Even though he admits that he isn't great at coming up with ideas, he takes good advantage of his illusion magic to trick his foes.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: If he wasn't immortal, [[TooDumbToLive he would have accidentally killed himself dozens of times over.]]
* GratuitousEnglish: The tattoo over his left eye reads "NOFUTURE". Ironic for an inmortal like him.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: Suffers this while fighting Mosquito. Being [[RunningGag immortal]], he just heals up and uses Kid and an illusion to distract him while he goes on ahead with the mission.
* HeinzHybrid: Not biologically, but his soul is some kind of combination of human, witch, and monster.
* {{Hologram}}: One of his powers is create illusions that are projected like holograms. During his "fight" with Kid at DWMA, he buys himself and Eruka time by casting one such hologram to distract the Reaper, firing off a Magic Eye Cannon from a distance to sell the illusion and capitalizing on Kid's ranged fighting style to make him think that the shots actually passing through him were being tanked with his immortality. [[SpottingTheThread He gave himself up only when he started avoiding Black*Star's physical strikes, as a solid connection would have passed right through him with ease with no resistance and given up the act, and Kid realized an immortal would have had nothing to fear from such blows to try and avoid them]].
* {{Hunk}}: Especially compared to the CastFullOfPrettyBoys, Free stands out tremendously.
* AnIcePerson: Free uses Ice based magic, but his personality is a little off from the usual.
* InstitutionalApparel: Continues to wear his prison duds and ball-and-chain long after breaking out of prison.
* TheLawOfDiminishingDefensiveEffort: He doesn't bother to dodge ''or'' block, because, as he often brags, [[CompleteImmortality he's immortal]]. He still ''feels'' pain, but it clearly doesn't bother him too much considering how much he brags. In fact, the only times he's ever bothered blocking is when using himself as a meat shield for Eruka, and the one time he bothered to dodge away from Black Star's sword strikes was all Kid needed to realize [[{{Hologram}} it was just an illusion to buy time]].
* LightningBruiser: Is tremendously strong, surprisingly fast and unquestionably tough.
* LivingForeverIsAwesome: He was imprisoned and restrained for a long time with the knowledge that not even death could free him, but does this bother him? No. The first time Soul impaled him, he bragged about it.
* MagicMisfire: Happened two times during his first fight after 200 years, the second time resulting in him becoming a [[HumanPopsicle Wolfman Popsicle]].
* MasterOfIllusion: One of the powers he got from Mabaa's left eye is the ability to cast powerful illusions that can mimic his every movement and even let him see what the illusion sees. However, because they have no substance and mimic his movements, he has to get creative in order to keep his enemies from figuring out the deception.
* MeaningfulName: Names himself Free after being freed by Medusa.
* NiceGuy: For all his faults, Free is a genuinely nice person, seen when he spontaneously offers himself to repay Medusa when she gets him out of jail and later when he tries to rescue Eruka, remembering that after all she did saved him before.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: He was born an Immortal Werewolf, but got Witch powers by stealing an Eye.
* NoNameGiven: Free is known only by his nicknames. So far he has been called (Man of the) Demon Eye, Free & (The Legendary) Werewolf. Free himself forgot his own name after years of imprisonment.
* NoSenseOfDirection: In the Baba Yaga arc of the manga. He was supposed to destroy tower 1 and he went toward tower 2 instead. In the end he ended up at tower 8. Towers 2 and 8 were opposite to each other.
* NotSoGreatEscape: When Eruka got him out of jail and he was still restrained. He talked pretty darn loud. The guards found out and surrounded them. He then kills them all in about thirty seconds. He was about to bust Eruka out of Jail but he was easily caught
* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: Voluntary shapeshifting, full control of his mental faculties, just as strong in human form as in wolf form (but no tail or claws/bite) and immortal by nature before he stole Mabaa's eye. It's unknown if this is what everyone from his clan of immortals are like, or it's just him.
* PermaStubble: Free's human form always has a little facial hair.
%%%* ShipTease: With Eruka.
* StealthPun: His first fight takes place in the capital of England. [[spoiler:He's a werewolf of London.]]
* TattooedCrook: Has a tattoo on his right shoulder that resembles an eye.
* TooDumbToLive: Or he would be, [[LivingForeverIsAwesome if he could die]]. During his fight on the bridge, he hits himself with his own attacks and accidentally freezes himself with ice magic in midair, plumetting into the water below. Slightly justified in that he's been out of practice for centuries, and he certainly shows cunning and skill in later battles, but his continuous ditziness and ineptitude in other areas suggest he really might not be the sharpeat tool in the shed. Whether his immortality has made him careless to mortal danger or he really is that dim is never made clear.
* TunnelKing: Free wanted to escape prison using this method but the guards only gave him chopsticks.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Free has stated that his werewolf form is his true form.
* UnskilledButStrong: After years of imprisonment, Free has gotten a little bit rusty with his magic skills. At one time, he encased himself in a block of ice! However, when he does get it right, he's a major threat. Besides, he can afford to be unskilled because he is ''immortal.''
* WolfMan: His true form is a bi-pedal wolf. Because of this even his human form is wolf like.
* WorfHadTheFlu: His first fight on the bridge ended as a loss not because his opponents were powerful or clever (in fact all four of them were dealing with major issues) but because Free KO'd himself...twice. He was rusty, to say the least, after his long imprisonment.
* WrongGenreSavvy: He wanted to try the classic prison escape via digging out with a spoon he saw in the movies but forgot he was in an anime.

Giriko is a Demon Weapon and an ally to the witch Arachne. He lives for fighting and destruction, and takes the form of a chainsaw in weapon form.
-----
* ArmedLegs: His favourite method of fighting is to run sawblades along his legs and kick with them.
* AssistCharacter: Giriko is a ShapeshifterWeapon who's found away around his dependence on a meister by letting himself be used as an EquippableAlly by a {{Golem}} he created.
* AxCrazy: More and more as the series goes on.
* ActuallyADoombot: When he fights Maka and Soul in the Book of Ebion, the pair seem to have triumphed and killed him. [[spoiler: And then he shows up in a female body, explaining the body the pair killed was a golem and he had transferred his mind to a new one awhile ago.]]
* BeneathTheMask: Giriko has apparently been sucking up and playing nice for eight hundred years to stay off the DWMA's radar. He's hated every second of it, and rips the mask off in the very chapter he's introduced.
* BodySurf: While waiting for Arachne to return he hid in the village of the golem-makers, had children, and swapped his memories with them before his current body died.
* BloodKnight: [[spoiler: He literally dies from his soul exploding because it couldn't contain 800 years of pent-up bloodlust anymore.]]
* ChainsawGood: He ''is'' the chainsaw.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Brown hair and brown eyes.
* DeathByIrony: [[spoiler:He dies in a Sloth chapter of the Book of Eibon, surrounded by chairs and sofas. His soul literally implodes because he couldn't calm down his bloodlust even for a second.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Giriko is... ''many'' things, but it's clear that he genuinely respects and looks up to Arachne, possibly even having romantic feelings for her.
* EvilCounterpart:
** Giriko is a wicked {{Foil}} to Soul, who is also a bladed ShapeshifterWeapon but completely dependent on a meister. Giriko gets around needing a meister by letting himself be used by a {{Golem}}, and even better his Saw Leg technique enables him use high-speed martial arts in his own right.
** Giriko is also a sharp contrast to Justin Law, strongest of the death-scythes, and is so annoyed by Justin's existence that he takes it personally. Justin also attacks with blades and can fight on his own like Giriko, but Justin's [[LargeHam hammy]] pieties infuriate Giriko, who has been kissing butt for eight centuries to stay off od Death's radar. Later developments [[spoiler:like Justin's FaceHeelTurn]] add a layer of {{Irony}} to this relationship.
** As a father, Giriko also contrasts Spirit, whose doting but damaged relationship with Maka is contrasted by Giriko, who steals the bodies of his own children to stay alive over the centuries.
* FamilialBodySnatcher: Has been taking over the bodies of his descendants for centuries to stay alive.
* GenderBender: [[spoiler:Since his latest kid was a girl he had no choice but to transport his mind into her, effectively changing genders. [[GenderBenderAngst He finds this pretty annoying]], though he dies permanently not long after.]]
* TheHedonist: He drinks in every other chapter, he's lazy as sin, and he acts touchy-feely with the teenage girl he's attempting to massacre.
* {{Immortality}}: [[spoiler:He may have been able to swap bodies and memories to remain alive, but [[KarmicDeath 800 years of pent-up bloodlust does NOT have its benefits to the soul]]]].
* ImmortalityImmorality: Implanting your memories into your artificially created children? More than a little bit creepy, and definitely ''not'' ethical.
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: The [[IncrediblyLamePun longer]] his fight goes on with Maka, the more it descends into this. It gets to the point that you could replace "chainsaw" with "penis" and it would make just as much sense.
* ItsPersonal: From the moment Giriko learns who Justin Law is, he hates everything about him. He pretends not to actually care before vowing to murder the death-scythe himself.
* {{Jerkass}}: There is nothing pleasant about this guy.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:Giriko's sole desire in life, to unleash his bloodlust that was pent-up for 800 years, becomes his downfall when his soul is unable to withstand it any longer and EXPLODES]].
* MasterRace: Subverted in that he works with witches and he's a human/weapon (also he's quite lazy when it comes to Arachnophobia's world domination plans), but the amount of hatred he possesses for Mosquito and other weapons is jarring. The only other weapon he has [[spoiler:, or rather, had]] any respect for is Justin, due to Justin being an autonomous weapon as well. [[spoiler: Amongst telling him to "Know your place", The abuse he screams at Soul in their fight in the Eibon chapter of Sloth ''as he's sawing into Soul's torso'' is palpable with his complete and utter contempt of weapons who ''need'' meisters.]]
* MirrorCharacter: Both Soul and Giriko have jagged teeth, AnimeHair, an insane amount of loyalty toward one person, and some form of attraction toward Maka. For Giriko, it eventually manifests itself in [[spoiler: LesYay]]. For Soul, it comes in the form of [[VitriolicBestBuds a weird]] but ''extremely'' loyal friendship and various amounts of ShipTease.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Towards Arachne.
* NearVillainVictory: Actually one of the more deadly foes that the protagonists face that he nearly comes close to killing them.
** In the encounter in the golem village, neither Maka, Soul or Chrona can harm the golem who wields Girko's chainsaw form. He would've killed them had Justin not arrived and took over the fight.
** In their last encounter, he actually had Maka and Soul dead to rights that they couldn't match him even with their power ups. They're only saved [[spoiler: because of his pent up bloodlust that he had acquired over 800 years that was too much for his current body to handle and ultimately implodes him when Maka angers him enough before he can deal the killing blow.]]
* PartialTransformation: He's only ever seen in full chainsaw form once. All other times he only grows sawblades along his body to fight with.
%%* PsychoForHire
* PhlebotinumOverload: Ironically of his own design. [[spoiler: He had such pent up bloodlust over the years his body couldn't take it and ultimately ends up killing him for real.]]
* PunnyName: Giriko can be see as a mangled anagram of "Nokogiri", meaning "saw".
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler:Towards Maka and Soul for Arachne's death]].
* RollerbladeGood: Can use the chainsaws on his feet to work like this.
* SanitySlippage: By the time Maka and Soul fight him in the Sloth Chapter he's... gotten a bit worse in the sanity department.
* SelfDisposingVillain: [[spoiler:See Karmic Death]].
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Arachne's CoDragons, the classy midget Mosquito versus the hard-drinking, foul-mouthed Giriko.
* ShipTease: With Arachne. It's every bit as unhealthy as you'd think.
* SlasherSmile: Giriko almost always has a toothy grin on him.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:In the anime, he abandons Arachnaphobia when Mosquito opens fire on his location and lives to the end, but later died in the manga]].
* UndyingLoyalty: For Arachne.
* UnholyMatrimony: Possibly with Arachne.
* UnknownRival: To Justin, [[spoiler:before joining him]].
* UnstoppableRage: In the "Salvage" arc, his anger and energy was so tremendous that it made him practically untouchable; the air around him was a whirling death trap of chainsaw blades, while the "noise" from his soul made Soul's piano worthless. However, [[spoiler:the sheer ''magnitude'' of his rage was too much even for him, and his soul ruptured from the strain of his 800 years' worth of hatred]].
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:He didn't take Arachne's death very well at all]].
* {{Yandere}}: For Arachne. [[spoiler:After her death, Giriko proceeded to try to rape Maka and then attempted to kill both her and Soul, ranting about how they had to die because of what they had done to her]].

Mosquito is Arachne's butler. His appearance is a short old man with a large pointy nose which is used to suck the blood out of a victim.
------
* AnimalMotifs: The mosquito of course, save for his form from 400 years ago where he was represented by bats.
* BadBoss: One mook makes the unfortunate mistake of being a loyal servant and checking if Mosquito is okay following a fight with some DWMA students. Mosquito does not hesitate to use his nose to stab and drain the poor guy of his blood. [[BodyHorror Ouch.]]
* BeardOfEvil: He has a handlebar moustache that ends in sharp points.
* BigOlUnibrow: It's hidden under his hat most the time [[http://manga.redhawkscans.com/reader/read/soul_eater/en/0/45/page/42 but it's there.]]
* BattleButler: For Arachne.
* BatOutOfHell: Mosquito's form from 400 years ago controls a swarm of bats to attack for him.
* BishounenLine: [[IWasQuiteALooker Apparently, Mosquito was very popular with the ladies 400 years ago]].
* TheDragon: To Arachne.
* GagNose: Which is actually a weapon, similar to a mosquito's proboscis.
%%* MightyGlacier: His form from 100 years ago focuses on might.
* MiniatureSeniorCitizen: Present day Mosquito is one of the shortest characters in the entire series. [[LampshadeHanging Giriko points out]] he's shrunk down quite substantially in the eight hundred years since Arachne's disappearance.
%%* LightningBruiser: His form from 200 years ago, when he was at his fastest and his nose was at his sharpest.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Mosquito drinks blood like his namesake, and his form from 400 years ago resembles one of the common depictions of vampires in modern media.
* OneWingedAngel: His forms from 100 and 200 years ago are decidedly inhuman, he crosses his BishounenLine at 400, and his form from 800 years ago resembles some sort of EldritchAbomination [[spoiler:[[ClippedWingAngel before he gets promptly oneshotted by Noah]]]].
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Arachne's CoDragons, the classy midget Mosquito versus the hard-drinking, foul-mouthed Giriko.
* ShoutOut: His "Police Stinger" is reference to both the band Music/ThePolice and its lead singer, Sting.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:In the manga he is killed by Noah. In the anime, he loses to Death in a giant robot battle, but is not killed and leaves after Arachne dies.]]
* TopHeavyGuy: His form from 100 years ago has a giant chest and gorilla like arms, but his legs are exactly the same as they are in his present day form.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: He begrudgingly allies with Giriko, whom he hates, to please Arachne.
* VampiricDraining: Mosquito can regenerate even great wounds by consuming the blood of others. When an Arachnophobia facility comes under attack, Mosquito murders one one of the researchers who's come to warn him of the need to evacuate for enough blood to recover from a sniper's bullet.
* VolleyingInsults: Even in presence of Arachne, he does this with Giriko.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Mosquito can control his body entirely and force it to regress back to previous points in his long lifespan.
* TheWorfEffect: [[spoiler:Loses easily to Noah to show how powerful he was]].

A samurai with a soul so strong that it counts for ninety-nine souls by itself. Black Star was about to take his soul but stopped when he saw how Mifune was protecting the young witch, Angela. He acts like a big brother or even a father to Angela. Once Arachnophobia is reformed Mifune starts working for them in exchange for protection for Angela.
------
* AdaptationDyeJob: A [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/souleater/images/1/13/Mifune_%28Manga%29_Profile.png/revision/latest?cb=20180515192100 color spread]] in the manga depicts him as golden-blond. The anime instead gives him [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/souleater/images/7/7d/Mifune_%28Anime%29_Profile.png/revision/latest?cb=20181204030527 a pale brown]] of some sort.
* AntiVillain: Though he did join Arachnophobia, slaughter more than a dozen DWMA military staff, and serve as a warrior-for-hire by crime families in the past, his soul is still displayed with a blue "good" hue and he only seeks to protect Angela from the DWMA witch persecutions.
%%* BadassLongcoat
* BadassNormal: When you consider that he isn't a Meister or Weapon, his feats are even more impressive. Not only does he hand [[EmpoweredBadassNormal Black Star]] his ass often, but has fought on even footing with Sid, who was using a Death Scythe.
* BadassAndChildDuo: The badass to Angela's child.
* BladeSpam: One of Mifune's techniques is a very unique take on this trope. He'll use a sword and slice it into his opponent (or smack it in place if he uses the back end) and leaves it in place. He'll repeat this process as many times as he wishes. After his victim is covered in swords, Mifune will use yet another sword to physically strike the other weapons, causing all of them to reverb and strike the victim again.
* CoatCape: Sometimes, he drapes a coat over his shoulders. DramaticWind and moving around don't send it flying, so it's clearly there to [[RuleOfCool look cool]].
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: His supernatural skill with the sword and superhuman physical prowess are implied to be the result of hard work and training, which makes him an impressive rarity in the series since he doesn't use any Weapons, is not a Meister, nor is a user of magic, but can keep up or surpass many who use the former.
* CombatPragmatist: When it comes to combat, the man is ruthless. Whether it be breaking fingers mid sword clash, jamming fingers into an enemy's wounds, slashing through the bottom of an opponent's feet, or attacking an opponent when they're down, Mifune employs any tactics he can to win.
* DisappearsIntoLight: [[spoiler:His death in the manga]].
* EverythingsBetterWithSamurai: Despite not being Japanese, he considers himself one.
* FieldOfBlades: Creates one of these as part of his attack style. It's called "Infinite Sword Style" for a reason.
* {{Foil}}: The humble, shaggy Mifune and the vain, flashily-dressed Blackstar.
* FriendToAllChildren: ''His primary motivation''. Just in case, y'know, him being an AntiVillain wasn't clear enough.
* ILetYouWin: Blatantly done with Mifune in his first fight with Black Star due to his tendency to hold back when fighting children. The first fight was ended when he was caught off-guard and held back due to Black Star being a child, while the second fight ended when he utterly decimated Black Star when he took him more seriously but still sparing his life due to not liking to hurt children.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: All of Mifune's weapons are katanas.
* MasterSwordsman: Thanks to his style, he can take advantage of his many blades in countless ways, even using them as projectiles or stepping stones.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: It's hard to tell where his pure skill with swords ends and something more begins--if it does. "Jumbled Line", for example, are just swords surrounding him because of constant collisions, but it looks and behaves like a special technique Meisters and Weapons would do. Stuff like that is a recurring thing with his Infinite One-Sword Style.
* MeaningfulName: Toshiro Mifune was a prolific Japanese actor with a wide range of roles, though many of his most iconic were ronin and samurai.
* OccidentalOtaku: WordOfGod is that Mifune is actually one of these since he is actually a foreigner who is a strong admirer of both samurais and ninjas, [[AscendedFanboy eventually working to become a legendary one himself.]] Mifune isn't even his real name, but a name he chose due to his admiration of samurais, hence the MeaningfulName entry.
* OralFixation: A straw.
* {{Ronin}}: He started out using his skills as a killer-for-hire before dedicating himself to protecting Angela.
%%* {{Samurai}}
* SimultaneousBladeSpam: Mifune can do this with his "infinite sword style" moves. Not only can he trap his opponent by pinning them down with some of his many swords but he can make each sword strike multiple times by making them vibrate.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:Unlike in the manga, he survives his battle with Black Star, pulls a HeelFaceTurn, and possible becomes a teacher for the DWMA in the anime]].
* WesternSamurai: It's stated multiple times how unusual a blonde-haired, blue-eyed samurai is. With that said, he's one of the most talented human fighters in the series.
* WorthyOpponent: To Black*Star.
* WouldntHurtAChild: Although he feels free to ''fight'' one if needed, he avoids seriously injuring them. He eventually makes an exception for Black*Star once he accepts him as a genuine opponent he can't hold back against.
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler:Anime only, in which he is responsible for killing Black*Star's father, White Star. Subverted in that not only does Black*Star not kill him, he holds no grudge against Mifune for that specifically, as he knows his father deserved what was coming to him]].

[[folder:Fisher King]]

One of Arachnophobia's assassins, a rather ditzy evil human who wears an equally odd orange deep-sea diving suit. He is sent to take the Eternal Spring from the Runaway Express, and fights Kid over it with his hook firing cannon.
----
* AbnormalAmmo: Hooks.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: If you didn't know he was an evil human you'd probably assume this. His body moves in such a way that one could think he was a balloon monster.[[spoiler:his whole body even looks like it deflated when he dies by Sid's hand, despite being shot in the abdomen a little while earlier by Kid and still moving that way.]]
* AssassinOutclassin: He's distinctly referred to as an assassin by Kid, but seems to be an InformedAttribute, as he's only sent to get the Eternal Spring and is never shown hunting somebody down.
* BloodFromEveryOrifice: [[spoiler:After he is killed by Sid, blood is seen coming out of an eyehole of his mask, since this eyehole is facing up, its unlikely that it is runoff from his forehead (where he got stabbed with the knife).]]
* TheDitz: He disconnects the trains cars to stop Kid from advancing, but jumps to avoid Mizune's bombs...landing right next to kid on the train cars he just disconnected. It takes him about half a minute to realize his mistake.
* TheFaceless: His face is never ever seen under that mask.
* GrapplingHookPistol: what his weapon doubles as, though its more of a grappling hook cannon.
* HandCannon: one that fires giant fishing hooks, no less.
* HisNameIs: [[spoiler:While he does reveal that Death and Eibon were associates, he's killed by Sid before he can reveal to Kid who exactly Eibon was.]]
* JigglePhysics: Whenever he moves fast, his entire suit jiggles about
* LaughablyEvil: Fisher is EXTREMELY hard to take seriously [[spoiler:until he drops his goofy attitude to reveal Eibon's connection to Death.]]
* OutsideContextProblem: He's a scuba diver assassin on a train speeding through the desert.
* SoftSpokenSadist: [[spoiler:his voice becomes calm and serious when he reveals that Death and Eibon were partners in some way at some point, the shift is quite jarring considering how eccentric Fisher was up until then.]]

A demon blade called the Uncanny Sword. Also Tsubaki's estranged older brother, he resented her for being a more gifted weapon than he.
------
* AlasPoorVillain: Masamune is given a rather sympathetic death. In his last moments, he breaks free from the Madness and implicitly tells Tsubaki that, contrary to what her insecurities might tell her, she truly is a strong person.
* BequeathedPower: In Masamune's last moments, he entrusts Tsubaki with the Uncanny Sword, confident that her inner strength will allow her to not fall victim to the bloody path that he took.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Anyone he possesses gaines black sclerae. His own sclerae go black partway through his fight with his sister as well.
* CainAndAbel: The Cain to Tsubaki's Abel.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: It's clear that, despite the cruel and bloody path that Masamune took in life, Tsubaki still loves him and sees him as her brother. In Masamune's last moments, he was able to [[DyingAsYourself revert to the man he used to be]], allowing Tsubaki to briefly reunite with her brother one last time. After Masamune's death, Tsubaki is shown asking Masamune for guidance on how to help Star, making it clear that she still sees him as the loving brother he used to be.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Part of the reason he resents Tsubaki so much is that he projected his own feelings of self-loathing onto her, interpreting Tsubaki's kind but submissive nature as her looking down on him. When Tsubaki flies into a rage and wildly stabs him to death inside of his soul, Masamune seems at peace. As his body fades away, [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre he tells her that the tsubaki flower has a wonderful fragrance]].
* DyingAsYourself: When Tsubaki kills him, Masamune breaks free from the Madness in his final moments, telling Tsubaki that the camellia blossom, her namesake, truly does have a lovely fragrance no matter what others might tell her.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: He's more pale than Tsubaki.
* EvilMakesYouUgly[=/=]IWasQuiteTheLooker: Compare the picture above to [[http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140717050235/souleater/images/d/df/Masamune_Nakatsukasa_-_%2832%29.png what he looked like as a kid]].
* EvilWeapon: One possible state of the demon blade form; possessing people, acts of violence, and soul-destroying all present while Masamune had that particular Weapon form.
* EmoTeen: Has the appearence of one at the very least.
* FacialMarkings: Another sign of his possession, black wave patterns form on his victim's cheeks.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: His sword form as the Uncanny Blade.
* LonersAreFreaks: Probably ''not'' a coincidence that Masamune went mad while alone and misunderstood, whilst Tsubaki's partnership with a meister (first from the family to join Shibusen) has allowed her to [[spoiler:unlock the 'true' form of the demon blade]].
%%* PeoplePuppets
* PsychologicalProjection: When he and Tsubaki fight inside of his soul, Masamune makes it blatantly clear that he's projecting his self-loathing onto her, interpreting her kind but submissive nature as her ''pitying'' him. When she flies into a rage and attacks him with bloodlust, however, he seems at peace, seeing Tsubaki for who she truly is in his last moments.
* PublicDomainCharacter: His name is based on the famous smith Masamune(in Japan, swords tend to be named after the smith). [[{{Irony}} When Masamune was the one to be said as the peace-loving one in real life.]]
* ShadowArchetype: To Star. It's heavily implied that Tsubaki sees Star as something of a surrogate to Masamune, with both of them having the same drive to get stronger, and as such she's terrified of the prospect that Star will go down the same path that Masamune did. However, once the spirit inside Tsubaki shows Star the suffering of those who tried and failed to take on the Uncanny Sword, Star resolves not to follow in Masamune's footsteps, but rather to carry on the despair that he and those like him fell victim to, telling Tsubaki that he'll make her brother's dream come true for him.
* StartOfDarkness: It's shown that Masamune set out on his bloody path simply because he desired to become stronger, but didn't have anyone there to stop him from succumbing to the temptation of madness.
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: He's a male version of Tsubaki, to put it bluntly. Becomes even more obvious in the Book of Eibon when Tsubaki undergoes a GenderBender and [[http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100416195319/souleater/images/3/3e/Tsubaki_boy.jpg looks incredibly like him]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: He was once an adorable kid who loved his sister. And then...
* WeaponWieldsYou: When he gets someone to hold his weapon form, he'll possess them to fight on his behalf.
* YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe: He seems rather fond of talking like this.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jack the Ripper]]

A power-hungry Evil Human serial killer, Jack is the first character introduced in the series. Fights with long metal claws attached to his arms.
----
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Jack barely resembles a human after consuming souls.
* BaldOfEvil: Is balding, with hair on either side of his head.
* BodyHorror: The entirety of the front of his face is stitched on, and his body is twisted due to soul consumption.
* BondageIsBad: His outfit invokes this to a safe-for-work degree.
* CallBack: later on in the anime, Maka is shown to wear slippers with his face on them.
* FanDisservice: He barely has anything on.
* GoryDiscretionShot: Subverted, His brutal act of cutting a woman's torso open is shown in shadows on the alley walls. However the freshly-bleeding body is still seen after the act has been done.
* ObviouslyEvil: He doesn't even try to be subtle.
* OverlyLongTongue: Best seen right before his attack, and when he licks his claws.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Compared to many other characters, he's really outclassed, but had the deadly potential to become a Kishin. Its implied that he was ''extremely'' close to this point when Maka confronted him.
* SerialKiller: It's a distinct title of his.
* SingleStrokeBattle: How he's finished off.
* StarterVillain: The first Evil Human introduced and actually the very first character to appear on-screen and in-manga.
* UnskilledButStrong: Evil Humans generally don't do much in terms of strategy, preferring straight-forward attacking. in the anime at least, Jack had no strategy, but has agility, speed, and raw power would've made him a ''much'' greater threat if Maka had had less experience when she went after him.
* YourSoulIsMine: As a general rule, Evil Humans generally want to eat more souls so they can get more power.

[[folder:Sonson J.]]

An evil human in Florence, Italy, who carries a knife and wears a bag over his head. Killed people who went to Emerald Cove.
----
* AxCrazy: What little characterization he has is envy and childish whining that Demon Weapons and the Meisters who wield them get to kill as many people as they please wehnever they please. This is in spite of the fact that they only kill Evil Humans who have become monsters on their path to becoming Kishin.
* FlatCharacter: He really wasn't given enough time in either the anime or the manga, to establish much characterization.
* InASingleBound: He can jump extremely high, evidenced when he attacks Maka.
* SingleStrokeBattle: He falls victim to this.
* ShoutOut: To Jason Voorhees, what with the Machete, the 13 on his back and the fact that he kills people who come to a cove.
* WhatTheHellHero: He sobs that Demon Weapons and Meisters as a whole get to kill as they please. Maka is quick to point out this is not the case after beating him.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Evil Monk Rasputin]]

An evil human monk who appears briefly when Maka gets back to collecting souls.
----
* BadassBoast: Claims to be very resilient, which is immediately followed by him being cut in two.
* ImplacableMan: Claims he is, but averted.
* RasputinianDeath: Despite what he's based on, he doesn't suffer this kind of fate. He does mention that not even bullets hurt him, which is not only a homage to the original Rasputin's mythical near invulnerability, but also ironic considering his real-life counterpart died easily via gunshot.
* SingleStrokeBattle: Seems to be a reoccurring theme with Maka's fights.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Alcapone]]

An evil human mobster leader who believes a Witch's soul will make him and his gang unstoppable. He escapes his initial encounter to go after Angela Leon.
----
* TheDon: Of a small Evil Human ''Mafia.'' We're introduced to him and his goons chowing down on a fancy dinner of Souls.
* ShoutOut: Not only to the actual Al Capone, but to Alcatraz Federal Prison, judged by the way his name is spelled.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Master Thief, Lupin]]

An Evil Human who steals souls. He's encountered by Death the Kid in his first appearance, but escapes while Kid, Patty, and Liz distract each other with their bickering.
----
* PhantomThief: His title.
* TheBadGuyWins: He gets away with a large bag of souls due to Kid's OCD and apparently has yet to be captured.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: He has his own comic book, which Black Star seems to enjoy thouroughly while working on the academy's library.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Frey D. Sadoko]]

An evil human that kills people by making them listen to a cursed word, which allows her to kill them in their dreams. Attacks with her long nails.
----
* DreamWalker: Like [[Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet Freddy Krueger]], she's a serial killer that kills people in their dreams.
* ShoutOut: She's a combo of [[Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet Freddy Krueger]] and [[Film/{{Ringu}} Sadako Yamamura]]. In addition her main attack is called Music/NineInchNails.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Her soul is swiftly taken by Maka and Soul as the penultimate one before the 100th one required for Soul's upgrade.

[[/folder]]

!!Great Old Ones
The Great Old Ones are five immensely powerful god-like beings, each of whom preside over a particular form of Madness with their Wavelength, which is born from their very existence.

----

[[folder:In General]]
* AmbiguousSituation: [[spoiler:While ''Manga/FireForce'', being a StealthPrequel, revealed that Lord Death was created by Shinra, Excalibur by Arthur, and that Asura was likely influenced by the Evangelist, it doesn't clarify how the other Great Old Ones like Eibon came to exist.]]
* BrownNoteBeing: The defining trait of a Great Old One is that their very soul wavelengths induce some form of madness on a planetary scale. They mostly suppress this wavelength, the exception of this being Asura, who's wavelength is so powerful it can manifest physically as a ClownSpecies.
* OurGodsAreDifferent: While it's implied that humans can achieve godhood artificially via becoming a Kishin, the Great Old Ones are all true gods.
* SingleSpecimenSpecies: No two examples are the same. The exception to this being Asura and Shinigami, and even then Asura had become a Kishin before his imprisonment.

[[folder:Excalibur]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/37588.jpg]]

-->Voiced by: Creator/TakehitoKoyasu (JP), Creator/TroyBaker (EN), Creator/LucaDalFabbro (IT)

The legendary sword used by heroes and kings. In spite of his immense powers, Excalibur hardly ever has a meister because no one can put up with his unbearably grating, loudmouthed, egomaniac personality. He usually resides in a cave full of fairies, who also can't stand him. Manga/FireForce reveals his origins.

-----
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: Can cut through Dimensions; just ''one'' reason why he's called THE most powerful weapon in the setting
* AwesomeButImpractical: He is ''the'' most powerful weapon in the setting. He can synchronize his soul wavelength with anyone, but he's so immensely annoying that no one can stand being near him.
* BrickJoke: In one of the tales about his past, he managed to get ''[[Literature/SherlockHolmes Watson]]'' arrested. Later, when watching a Sherlock Holmes movie, he ''again'' accuses Watson of being guilty. Watson, [[NoFourthWall on screen]], panics after being accused.
* CaptainErsatz: Excalibur's character design comes straight out of ''Literature/TheMoomins''.
* CatchPhrase: Several times, he starts with "My legend began in/dates back to the 12th century" to then say a bunch of random stuff that has nothing to do with his legend, leaving everyone who listens annoyed.
* CatchphraseInsult: He almost never can say even one sentence without yelling "'''BAKAME/[[YouFool FOOL!]]'''"
* CloudCuckooLander: He tells long stories that go nowhere and end without warning, his list of rules are baffling, and he'll randomly say "BAKA". According to the anime, he was a lot more coherent in King Arthur's day and also had a cool beard. Apparently his sanity is directly proportional to his amount of facial hair. He also has a tendency to stare at insects as they cross his path, sometimes stopping what he's doing to walk over to one. Before calling it a fool.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: Towards to the end of the anime, he [[WisdomFromTheGutter gives out some info during the fight against Asura]] and [[spoiler:[[WhatTheHellHero calls Azusa on fighting Asura without a meister]]]]... in between being a CloudCuckoolander of the nth degree.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: [[spoiler:Gives Asura a talking to about honor and emotions in the anime. Asura doesn't seem to mind too much; his response to being called a fool is "aw, I missed you too."]]
* DifficultButAwesome: For those who ''can'' put up with his quirks, [[SuperSpeed the]] [[LightningBruiser rewards]] [[InfinityPlusOneSword are]] [[PowerGivesYouWings worth it]]. A certain meister aside, everyone who has been able to tolerate him ends up going down in legends for a reason.
* EldritchAbomination: [[spoiler: He's one of the five remaining Great Old Ones, beings so powerful and mighty, their ''mere presence'' induces madness. His specialty is Madness through Rage; he spreads madness by infuriating people and driving literally mad with anger through his quirks and pride (but like Shinigami, appears to control it instead of causing widespread inducement of wrath.) The cover spread of chapter 77 possibly shows him alongside Shinigami, Asura, Eibon and The Great Old One of Power, all of whom are confirmed eldritch horrors (second from the left)]].
* ExcaliburInTheStone: Like its namesake's common image, it is first found engraved in stone until Black☆Star releases him. Star soon comes to regret this.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: Meisters who go through the effort of seeking him out will be thrown off by his rather bizarre appearance.
* FearlessFool: He's the only one who isn't afraid of Asura's power. Justified since he is that powerful himself, thus subverting the 'Fool' aspect.
* TheGadfly: He riles up almost anyone to rage with his quirks, pride and just endless bizarre traits. [[spoiler: Given he represents Madness Through Rage, this is not surprising and he can be be quite civil when need be]].
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: It's {{lampshaded}} by Black☆Star that he's naked beneath the waist.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: Is the most powerful weapon in existence... '''''if''''' you're willing to take his absurd crap. Some of the known abilities he grants his wielder are Heavenly Wings, light speed movement, and the ability to slash everything with ''[[StuffBlowingUp gigantic explosions of golden fire]]''. When Liz used him (briefly) in the Book of Eibon, he was able to cut a large hole '''through another dimension'''.
* InformedAbility: Supposedly, Excalibur is the most powerful weapon in all existence. Despite that, he participates in very few fights and doesn't have many onscreen feats to speak of. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] since Excalibur is relentlessly annoying and nobody in their right mind would put up with him.
* ItsAllAboutMe:
** Don't talk with him; he will steam roll you with an endless barrage of stories and rules and "FOOL!"
** If you watch the episode where he talks about doing detective work with Franchise/SherlockHolmes, the wallpaper, pictures, and background are ''filled'' of images of him.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's so friggin annoying it makes sense why the only people who can wield him are called heroes. King Arthur must've been a saint. [[spoiler:Or, as ''Fire Force'' shows, incredibly foolish.]]
* LargeHam: Picking Creator/TakehitoKoyasu for his Japanese voice role and Creator/TroyBaker for his English couldn't possibly have been unintentional. Yes, they overact like hell and obviously had fun doing it.
* TheLongList: Any meister who wants to wield him must obey a 1,000 rule list and he will recite them in a random order if you ask (or if you don't ask but are nearby.) In his first appearance, Excalibur was willing to cut his list of 1,000 requirements down to 800 in return for being wielded as a weapon by Kid or Star. Presumably, a sufficiently persuasive Meister could negotiate him down to something manageable. [[spoiler: In the Book of Eibon he was willing to lend his power to good guys with no requirements (in the Eibon Chapter Pride, they were too proud to accept his offer)]].
* MultipleChoicePast: The only concrete things are the people who have wielded him and went on to become legends. As for the rest, it jumps all over the place.
** Averted with the reveal that Manga/FireForce is a prequel of Soul Eater, Excalibur revealed to initially be Arthur Boyle's sword brought to life from his original owner's thoughts and Shinra influenced the adolla energy.
* NoSell: In the anime, he is completely unfazed by [[spoiler:the shockwaves of Asura and Death's battle. Even Asura's direct attack that leaves Azusa, Spirit, and Kid battered has no visible effect on him.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity:
** Hinted at during the Battle on the Moon arc. His interactions with Shinigami regarding [[spoiler:his apparent death as a result of Kid becoming a full Shinigami]] at least show he's capable of carrying a normal, serious conversation.
** Considering he was pretty serious during King Arthur's time, he seems capable of reigning in his quirks. Alternately, his quirks exist [[spoiler: because he is a Great Old One, powerful beings whose ''mere existence causes madness!'' Specifically, the Madness Through Rage. Makes sense that he tends to piss off everyone who meets him...]]
* OnlyTheChosenMayWield: DefiedTrope. ''Everyone'' can wield the ultimate legendary sword. The problem is no one can wield him for very long, because Excalibur's personality is so [[SidekickCreatureNuisance unbearably irritating and egotistical]], he drives his partners insane.
* PetTheDog:
** Moments such as when the gang needs his abilities in the Book of Eibon, or Shinigami-sama needs someone on the level [[spoiler:to be there for Kid after he dies]] show he may well buckle down when necessary and can actually stop being annoying for a while.
** Offered Spartoi his services no strings attached and seriously when they needed to save Kid. Unfortunately, being in the Pride chapter, they refused.
* PhraseCatcher: "SO ANNOYING!"
* PowerGivesYouWings: One of the powers a meister gets when wielding Excalibur are a pair of wings made of light capable of flight.
* {{Pride}}: He is well aware of how powerful, legendary, etc he is. [[spoiler: Ironic that in the Chapter of Pride, HE was humble enough to offer his services without rules]].
* PublicDomainArtifact:
** "{{Excalibur}}" is from Arthurian lore and so is centuries old.
** The anime shows that as well as having been ''the'' Excalibur, he was also present for at least one Franchise/SherlockHolmes case (where he gets Watson arrested as the murderer), as well as having been Tony from ''Theatre/WestSideStory''. Given his status as a CloudCuckooLander, this Backstory is obviously questionable.
* RandomEventsPlot: All his stories about his past. Any attempt to connect the events he describes to each other, or to some kind of point or theme, is utterly futile.
* RetCanon: The "Excalibur Song" was originally made for a filler episode in the anime. It eventually found its way into the manga, where Excalibur was able to torment even more people with it.
* RunningGag: The [[https://i.imgur.com/QlhwdzH.gif 'I-Have-Met-Excalibur' face]].
* SecretTestOfCharacter: Almost every question that comes out of his mouth is a SecretTestOfCharacter...that only makes sense to him.
* ShooOutTheClowns: Inverted. He comes back for the climax in the anime, despite everyone's (both villain and hero) best attempts at ignoring him. In the manga, he invites himself to witness the climax with Shinigami at Death Academy.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Even for his power, he's full of himself. He barely lets other people talk near him.
* SmugSuper: He brags quite a lot, but has every ounce of the power needed to back up his claims. Enough to elevate the worst meister in the school to three-star status simply for wielding him (though the partnership didn't last). Furthermore, [[spoiler: he's a [[EldritchAbomination being of the same nature]] as Shinigami]], it's really not surprising his ego is so inflated.
* SuperPrototype: Lord Death reveals that Eibon, who would continously deny, based his research on making the Demon Weapons using Excalibur. Furthermore, Manga/FireForce reveals that Excalibur existed since the creation of the current reality.
* TalkativeLoon: The singing... and dancing... and ''never shutting up''...
* TalkingWeapon: To everyone's horror, he talks and talks and ''talks'' regardless of what form he's in.
* WorldsStrongestMan: Has been stated several times in the series to be the most powerful weapon ever made, more so than even modern day death scythes, inspiring the creation of the demon weapon race by Arachne in the first place. He even served in the Eight guardians legion alongside Asura and Death centuries before the DWMA was formed and in the anime was unimpressed by the intense battle between Asura and Death (Both were at their strongest by then!). Problem is, he is gainfully aware of it, making him unbearable to pretty much every meister who tries to wield him.

[[folder:Kishin Asura]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ashurakishin_1_9012.jpg]]

-->Voiced by: Creator/ToshioFurukawa (JP), Creator/ChrisPatton (EN), Roberto Certomà (IT)

The strongest and most dangerous antagonist in ''Soul Eater'', as well as the BigBad for the entire series and the first demon god. He was supposedly once human, a meister and Death's apprentice who ate his own weapon partner after going insane with fear. Before the start of the series, he was defeated by Shinigami-sama and [[SealedEvilInACan imprisoned]]. However he is eventually released and begins to spread "madness" throughout the world.
-----
* AdaptationalWimp: The anime version is considerably much weaker than in the manga. [[spoiler: In the anime, Maka, Black Star and Death The Kid put a good fight and he was defeated by Maka, even after he already managed to defeat Shinigami and consume Arachne's soul. In the manga, even after Soul became a Death Scythe, Black Star went BeyondTheImpossible to become a god-like fighter, Maka controlled the Black Blood and wielded her Death Scythe father, and Kid ascended as the new Lord Death, they could not defeat Asura and Crona knew, since [[AsLongAsThereIsEvil he will exist as long fear exists]], the only they could defeat him was [[SealedEvilInACan to seal him in the moon... for a while]].]]
* AloofBigBrother: [[spoiler:To Death the Kid]].
* AndThenWhat: Subverted in the anime. [[spoiler: Excalibur]] asks him what he intends to do after filling the world with his madness. Asura replies that madness is enough for the world.
* AntagonisticOffspring: [[spoiler:To Shinigami]].
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: Represents the madness of terror.
* ArchEnemy: To Shinigami and the whole Academy, in particular the Spartoi unit.
* AsLongAsThereIsEvil: [[spoiler: Crona reveals that as long as there is intelligent life, there will always be fear. Because Asura is the embodiment of madness caused by terror, the presence of life means his presence will always remain no matter how hard they try to eliminate him. Thus the best they can do is make him SealedEvilInACan again, but hopefully more effective this time.]]
* AxCrazy: Seems quite happy to slaughter a bunch of kids, namely Maka, Death The Kid and Black Star.
* BandagedFace: Despite not covering any injuries, Asura's fear of everything leads him to cover up his face in bandages whenever he gets the chance. Like much of his characterization, this emphasizes his unstable and insane nature.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: Justified when he was first revived, since he hadn't finished putting his skin back on yet, meaning his shape wasn't fully formed.
* BigBadEnsemble: Although he spends much of the series as a background villain, he's always number one on Shibusen's hit list and they are always trying to locate and stop him, even while dealing with other immediate threats, such as [[ArcVillain Arachne, or Noah]]. [[TheHeavy Medusa]] also has great sway on the plot and they both cause a huge threat to Shibusen.
* BishounenLine: In the Anime, after fighting his giant self, Asura turns back into his more human form, though with the same light blue skin as his previous form.
* BodyHorror: Not only was he skinned alive and kept within his flayed flesh for hundreds of years but he can also stretch his skin and use it to form bandages around himself like clothing.
* BreathWeapon: Thanks to swallowing his weapon partner, Vajra. He can also naturally summon them with his instant runes as well.
* CainAndAbel: The Cain to [[spoiler:Death the Kid's Abel]].
* CannibalismSuperpower: It was stated several times he devoured his weapon partner and can use his powers because of it.
* CollapsibleHelmet: Played with. His face is wrapped up frequently, but the fabric/skin often opens up to show his face.
* CombatSadomasochist: Maybe.The most nasty attacks from Black Star and Maka blades just made him laugh.
* TheCorrupter: Asura creates an army of clowns and has them corrupt people such as [[spoiler:Justin]].
* CowardlyLion: Villainous example. Even though Shinigami is the only character who can match him, he still retreats [[spoiler:to the moon]] and doesn't fight himself until all his minions are killed. He ''is'' filled with the madness of Fear, after all.
* DeadpanSnarker:
** Has dryly mocked Shinigami and Kid a couple of times when they tried to attack him.
--->'''Asura:''' So courageous, you're making me quiver...
** And with Excalibur in the anime as well when getting scolded.
--->'''Asura:''' Aww, I missed you too.
* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:In the manga his goals are thwarted and he's back to being SealedEvilInACan, but is technically alive so long as human fear exist. In the anime he unambiguously died]].
* DissonantSerenity:
** Especially in the anime, he can be creepily calm at times. He doesn't even bat an eyelid at Shinigami's threats to skin him alive ''again''.
** His only response to [[spoiler:Noah going OneWingedAngel and]] ''impaling him like a bug on a pin'' is to bemusedly ask why the latter is "poking" him.
* DissonantLaughter: Being hit by Shinigami Chop and sent crashing in the ground,bleeding? Just laugh.[[spoiler:Being slashed multiple times by Black Star special move and then bleeding for it? Just laugh. Being nearly bisected and then sealed by Maka and Chrona?Just laughs and mocks the heroes]]. This guy is really nuts.
%%* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: [[spoiler:Asura is defeated in the anime because he cannot comprehend the concept of courage]].
* EvilerThanThou: [[spoiler:In the manga Crona absorbs him completely. But once their resolve starts to waver, Asura's madness overwhelms Crona, reversing the absorption]].
* ExoticEyeDesigns: His red eyes have white details over the iris to give the appearance of additional vertical eyes inside of his regular ones.
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: Not on your hands, your forehead, your hair, and especially not ''inside'' your normal eyes!
* FateWorseThanDeath: Having your skin ripped off and turned into a bag with which to seal your soul for all eternity. No wonder he's even crazier when he comes out.
* FeelsNoPain: Maybe. He says that he doesn't fear pain, so it can't affect him. He barely flinches from being stabbed repeatedly and almost cut in half by Maka's scythe.
* FreakOut: His original one was what caused him to become the first Kishin.
* GigglingVillain: Extremely high-pitched and disturbing.
* GreaterScopeVillain: The most powerful antagonist in the series, with all the other villains wanting him for one reason or the other. Until the Battle on the Moon arc, he rarely gets any screen time and is only briefly seen in flashbacks, or mentioned at all. But he still remains a major threat.
* GoodHurtsEvil: Inverted. In the anime [[spoiler: Maka uses Anti-Demon Wavelength, a wavelength that can destroy evil, which was capable of killing Medusa, and failed. This is because Asura was being driven by madness, not by malice or sadism like Medusa. Insane people cannot be considered completely evil because they are not completely in control of their thoughts and judgment and thus do not act according to the concepts of good and evil]].
* {{Guyliner}}: Whether it's makeup or just his natural eyes, they have this effect.
* HealingFactor: Due to the Black Blood, he can regrow whole limbs in the anime, though it seems to be pretty painful. He also likely can do this on his own.
* HumanoidAbomination:
** Despite appearing human, he is one of eight "Great Old Ones", representing "[[AnthropomorphicPersonification the madness of terror]]." His very presence causes horrible death-filled hallucinations and monsters, can create violent weather, and even warps reality in distorted ways.
** [[spoiler:In the finale, he is revealed to be a fragment of Shinigami, just like his "younger brother" Death the Kid. Specifically, he is all of Shinigami's fear.]]
* HumansAreInsects: In the manga, he constantly refers to Maka as scum for being a weaker human and feels humans in general are weak creatures beholden to their fears.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: A vajra that fires laser beams?
* InformedAttribute: Despite being noted as a "scaredy cat", Asura is unnervingly [[DissonantSerenity serene]] most of the time and seems to not worry when openly mocking Lord Death in his face. Keep in mind he knows he is more than willing to skin him alive again.
* InstantRunes: Summons them by clapping his hands.
* KnightOfCerebus: When he's onscreen... the comedy STOPS.
* LimpAndLivid: His default way of moving, although it's explained by the fact that he has to learn to walk all over again. By the end of the anime he's standing upright.
* LivingMacguffin: Especially in the manga, where the other three [[BigBad Big Bads]] (Medusa, Arachne, and Noah) are all trying to find and control him to use his madness for their own ends. On his own, Asura simply fled and hid [[spoiler:on the Moon]] to be left alone and took no action until other people came to attack/control him. To be fair though, he didn't need to come to Earth, as [[spoiler:the influence of his [[TheCorruption Madness of Fear]] was growing large enough to encompass the whole planet anyway.]]
* LovesTheSoundOfScreaming: His reaction to Maka's bloodcurdling scream as he crushes her ribs certainly gives this impression.
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler:Pulls one on Kid, bluntly telling him the darker side of his family tree, not to mention father. Needless to say, Kid is not amused.]]
-->'''Asura:''' [[spoiler: What a stupid younger brother, you shouldn't have decided to become a true Shinigami]].\
'''Kid:''' [[spoiler: Just now... what did you say? ...[[HeroicBSOD I'm your little brother]]?]]
* MadGod: The embodiment of all Madness [[spoiler: of Terror]].
* MeaningfulName: "Asura" are minor Buddhist gods, associated with violence and mad desire.
* MonsterProgenitor: His madness wavelength is so potent, [[ClownSpecies Clowns]] are spawned from concentrated pockets of it. By the time DWMA found him [[spoiler:hiding on the moon]], they have to get past an entire army of clowns, all of whom are unkillable as long as they have Asura's wavelength to feed on.
* MoodSwinger: He can be composed and polite on one minute and then on the next one he starts laughing like the maniac he truly is. Curiously, he acts in a more cool and sane way while he doesn't hide his face with his mask.
* MookMaker: His madness is able to endlessly produce murderous Clowns.
* NoSell: Everybody's attacks are rendered useless against him.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: [[spoiler:After Shibusen destroys his Clown army with the [[EnemyMine help of the witches]], Asura causes a mass hallucination that blankets the Moon, causing everyone to go temporarily insane. When it is dispelled by Maka, it is revealed that he is literally [[ParanoiaFuel inches away from Sid's face]].]]
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:In the manga, after what appears to be the buildup to a massive battle royale with Crona, he is unceremoniously sucked into Crona's [[LimitBreak Mad Blood attack]] and absorbed completely. But when Crona has a breakdown in the face of Maka and her father's familial bond, the Kishin overwhelms Crona from within.]]
* OminousLatinChanting: Some sort of chanting always plays just before he uses Vajra or his beams in the anime.
* OneManArmy: Remember the trouble Maka had to beat Blair and even Stein had difficulty in facing Medusa? Asura was capable of slaughtering large groups of witches ''by himself''. And this was before turning into a Kishin.
* OneWingedAngel: His giant True Kishin form in the anime. Although from there he reverts back into an [[BishounenLine even more powerful human shape]]. Averted in the manga.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Due to his agoraphobia, he mainly spends time by himself cloistered away from others. In the anime, Arachne had to come to him directly for aid and in the manga he spends his time [[spoiler:hiding in the moon]] after being freed from his prison. Unfortunately his Madness Wavelength is so immense, the world starts plunging into chaos and spawning monsters just by him existing.
* TheParagonAlwaysRebels: Asura was by far the best and strongest of the original eight guardians who served Lord Death centuries before the academy was formed, and by extension the strongest meister in the series, second only to Lord Death himself. He was also the frightening one of them all, leading to his fall from grace.
* TheParanoiac: According to Lord Death, Asura was like a "huge ball of paranoia", always wearing between five or six layers of clothes and keeping himself cloistered away. While he was the strongest of the Eight Shinigami Legions, he was always afraid of something and sought power, till the point he started hunting for souls and ate his own partner, who he was terrified of.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Potent and infectious madness wavelength, extremely deadly beams from Vajra, and [[spoiler:being a Great Old One]] puts him in this category.
* PhysicalGod: Being a MadGod , it's no surprise. The only one that can match him is Lord Death himself.
* APupilOfMineUntilHeTurnedToEvil: He was [[spoiler:a fragment of Lord Death that he ripped out, who then learned from and then betrayed him.]]
* ReactiveContinuousScream: With Eruka when he first opened his eyes mere inches from her face.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: In the anime he gives one to Shinigami ([[CasualDangerDialogue while beating each other to a pulp]]) and another to Maka.
** In the manga he gives one to Shibusen [[spoiler:and the witches]], surprisingly similar to the one he gave Maka in the anime. He states that the madness his presence causes was really there all along beneath the mask of order they enforce, he simply brought it to the surface.
%%% "Look at him." is not context. Please add context.
%%%* RedEyesTakeWarning:
* RoomFullOfCrazy: Anywhere he inhabits for a long enough time becomes this, resembling a bizarre shrine covered in talismans and chains.
* SatanicArchetype: Asura was created by the series BigGood (and TopGod) Shinigami-Sama/Lord Death as a means of creating the perfect world (both in creating a warrior to fight the forces of evil as well as [[spoiler:a way of purging himself of his own fears]]). Asura then betrayed him and was punished by being banished into a less destructive form beneath him, but is still able to influence others subconsciously, complete with [[HollywoodSatanism his own line of worshippers]]. He also has a motif of threes, not unlike the Devil (who had three sets of wings and three faces) in ''[[Literature/TheDivineComedy Dante's Inferno]]''.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Can function as an actual weapon. Plus they're made of his own super-stretchy, impervious skin.
* SealedEvilInACan: He was sealed in a bag. [[spoiler:Now in the moon courtesy of Crona's HeroicSacrifice.]]
* SigilSpam: His three-eyed pattern shows up a lot to show his madness wavelength is at work.
* SlasherSmile: Not with great regularity, but being madness incarnate and all it's no surprise how well he can pull them off when he wants to.
* ThirdEye: His main motif. Appropriate considering the Buddhist theme. It may also be a shout-out to Atsuhi Ookubo's [[Manga/BIchi former]] BigBad, [[http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=524330T666NMTBOneT04182.jpg Emine the Hakutaku.]]
* {{Ubermensch}}: Anime-only, from his ReasonYouSuckSpeech to Shinigami in episode 48, he can be seen as this. He believes by plunging the world into madness will allow true freedom and despises the rules of law and morality enforced by Lord Death.
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: [[spoiler:To Death the Kid]].
* VillainousBreakdown:
** He's so paranoid and fearful that he has these at the drop of a hat, but his one at the end of the anime was a topper.
** [[spoiler:Inverted with his defeat in the manga, as rather than terrified, he's not impressed that he managed to be sealed away again, proclaiming that he'll one day return]].
* WaveMotionGun: When using Vajra. The beam is even powerful enough to ''wound Lord Death'' if it hits directly.
* WhamLine: To Death the Kid in Chapter 107: [[spoiler:"Stupid little brother."]]

* EldritchAbomination: [[spoiler:Called a Great Old One, along with the other Eight Warlords]].

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/black_mass_body.png]]
The abomination sealed with Noah's Book of Eibon. It can give power at the cost of one's sanity, similar to the effects of Black Blood.
-----
* AmbiguousGender: It's a massive, inky black mass, and only ''very'' vaguely humanoid. So it seems safe to say that Atshushi is justified in ''this'' case.
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: Represents the madness of power, hence its title.
* {{Cthulhumanoid}}: Even though the it barely looks human, its face sort of resembles Cthulhu's, probably done to emphasize its status as an EldritchAbomination.
* EldritchAbomination: See for [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110402163345/souleater/images/thumb/7/74/Soul-eater-1211017.jpg/435px-Soul-eater-1211017.jpg yourself]]. Also, see what it calls itself.
* ItsAllMyFault: [[spoiler: It states that the Great Old Ones' very existence influenced madness and that they were ultimately responsible for the madness that was Asura]].
* NoNameGiven: He only refers himself as one of the Great Old Ones.
* PowerAtAPrice: As stated above, he can give people power at the cost of their sanity, throwing them into madness.
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:"''Fragment of the Madness of Law... Fragment... of Shinigami."]]
* SealedEvilInACan[=/=]SealedGoodInACan: Though reasons for how and why aren't clear, it seems to be existing within the Book of Eibon and though it starts out antagonizing, its alliance is ultimately sort of ambiguous. It's also staying there by choice, for its own vague reasons, and has the power to get out any time.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: To what end no one knows, but [[spoiler:exposing Kid and Black*Star to madness was meant to be beneficial to them]].

[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/33712.jpg]]

Seemingly the third BigBad of the series, Noah originally appeared to work for Arachne, until it's revealed that his true goal is to use the Book of Eibon to absorb and "collect" everything, which he feels in essence would make him "everything".
-----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: [[spoiler: And apparently no biological heritage to speak of.]]
* ArtificialHuman: [[spoiler:After he gets killed, the "Table Of Contents" in the Book of Eibon reveals he was a manifestation of the Greed chapter, called a "statue." Another one is sent out, this time of the Wrath chapter.]]
%%* ArcVillain
* BigCreepyCrawlies: His personal magic revolves around caterpillars and centipedes. On NightmareFuel.
* TheCollector: His entire shtick is to collect anything worthwhile and his goal is to one day collect everything. He decided to add [[spoiler:Kid]] to his TomeOfEldritchLore along with anything else he finds interesting.[[spoiler:He's programmed to be that way]]
* CollectorOfTheStrange:
** Such "interesting" things include demons, sins, and a massive, inky abomination calling itself a [[EldritchAbomination Great Old One]].
** He also collected [[spoiler:Excalibur; Freaking "He's So Annoying Everything Wants To Kill Him" Excalibur]]. You do ''NOT'' get stranger than that.
* DissonantSerenity: Never shows anything stronger than mild irritation, even when he's sucking people up into his book. [[spoiler: Reverses completely for the Wrath model.]]
* TheDragon:[[spoiler:The Greed Incarnation was built up to be the BigBad in the Book of Eibon arc, but was actually working for the Table of Contents, who operated behind the scenes.]]
* FlatCharacter: Even Kid notices that something is wrong with Noah, who collects everything just for the sake of collecting and has very straightforward goals, compared to other villains. [[spoiler:It turns out his "Greedy collecting machine" remark was very close to the truth.]]
* GodhoodSeeker: He wants to become "God" by collecting everything in the world into the Book of Eibon.
* HairTriggerTemper: [[spoiler:The Noah from the Wrath chapter]] flies off the handle at virtually everything.
* TheHeavy: He's the villain driving the plot for the Book of Eibon Arc, [[spoiler:though he's in service to the Index]].
* KarmaHoudini:
** [[spoiler:He's still alive at the end, and Gopher is escaping with him]].
** [[spoiler:Although Greed, the only Noah that actually managed to do anything evil, is dead]].
* LegacyCharacter: It would seem Noah would at least ''like'' to be something like this, as he's used Eibon's name for "brand recognition", as mentioned above.
* LetsGetDangerous:
** With GlowingEyesOfDoom and InstantRunes to go with it.
** When he twists his cap around, he's ''really'' decided to get serious.
* MarkOfTheSupernatural: He has purple eyes and is certainly a powerful mage, [[spoiler: and certainly not human, so all bets are off for pigmentation]]. Of course, such an unusual eye color just makes him that much more special.
* TheMinionMaster: When he decides to get serious, he fights by summoning hordes of monsters and artifacts from the Book of Eibon. These include giant worms, flying gremlins, a Cyclops, ''tentacles with faces, a three-headed dragon with a cemetery on its back and each head wearing the mask of a famous slasher film star, and '''MICHELANGELO'S DAVID.'''''
* NeverFoundTheBody: Strongly implied to have disappeared into the Book of Eibon at the end of his battle against Kid. [[spoiler: He's later back, with a new personality]].
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: [[spoiler:Stein, Sid, Marie, Nygus and Tezca]] never stood a chance.
* OneManArmy: [[spoiler:As Spartoi found out.]]
* TomeOfEldritchLore: The book of Eibon. He thinks by collecting everything in the world that [[GodhoodSeeker he will become a god]]. [[spoiler:The Tables of Contents is actually responsible for this.]]
* UnstoppableRage: [[spoiler:The Wrath model of Noah. HairTriggerTemper included.]]
* VillainDecay: [[spoiler:After coming back as the Noah of Wrath, he spent most of his time yelling at everyone and being mostly comic relief]].
* YouHaveFailedMe: Defied, no matter how annoying his minions get. He even points out to Gopher that [[spoiler: losing to Maka]] just means that he wasn't strong enough. Even though Gopher made things even worse by screaming his boss' name everywhere, Noah still keeps the guy around, if only as a guinea pig. [[spoiler: As Wrath, this completely saves his ass after Noah eats him, and Gopher is the only one fighting for him]].

A fanatical servant of Noah. Gopher has a rather aggressive and violent nature, especially if it is concerning insults made towards Noah, whom he is both extremely protective over and obsessed about. Gopher personally believes that he is the only one who can satisfy Noah. Justin also describes Gopher as always being uptight. He later demonstrates a tendency to bite his top lip whenever he becomes enraged.
-----
%%* BattleButler: To Noah
* CampGay: Pretty much, although he's [[SingleTargetSexuality only gay for Noah]].
%%* CrazyJealousGuy
* DeathGlare:
** Subverted; he tries, but just achieves a [[{{Narm}} ridiculously pouty inverted-V face]]. Unfortunately for Death the Kid, his pout is silly, but [[BerserkButton asymmetrical]].
** It doesn't look asymmetrical at first, but Kid could see the differences, they're near microscopic.
%%* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: His face on this page. Wow, just... wow.
* IgnoredEnamouredUnderling: Desperately in love with Noah, but Noah doesn't seem to notice.

%%* LargeHam: "NOAH-SAMAAAAAAAAA!"
%%* LoveMartyr: Again, to Noah.
%%* MadLove: Toward Noah.
* MeaningfulName: Gopherwood was what the biblical Noah built his ark from. Guess who SE Noah uses as a tool to create his own 'ark'?
* VillainExitStageLeft: [[spoiler:Although he's hardly a villain at this point, the manga ends with him seen happily carrying off the six remaining Noahs Asura and Crona spat out while they're still unconscious.]]
* WingedHumanoid: Gopher is one of the rare souls capable of {{Flight}}.
* {{Yandere}}: To the point of parody. Gopher seems to think ''everyone'' is a rival for "Noah-sama's" affection.

* ArcVillain: [[spoiler:It was responsible for creating the Noahs, both the first Greed incarnation who acted as the Big Bad for the Book of Eibon Arc, while The TOC was operating behind the scenes, and the second Wrath]].
* BeyondTheImpossible: Even TOC has made the "I've-meet-Excalibur" face, ''despite not'' '''''having''''' ''a face''.
* EldritchAbomination: A relatively minor and benign one.
* EvilKnockoff: Excalibur says it was modeled after him, but unlike his, Index's GagNose [[VisualPun isn't turned up]]. Appropriately, Index's MrExposition traits are toned down in comparison, and even it finds its model frustrating.
* EvilMentor: [[spoiler: It wants to be one of these for the ''whole world'', corrupting everything with the knowledge and secrets that Eibon locked away]].
* MadnessMantra: [[spoiler:A quite epic one:]]

* TheManBehindTheMan: [[spoiler: Is revealed to be the one behind Noah's actions (and who created him in the first place)]].
* MrExposition: Index is the rescue team's guide through the Book of Eibon and explains each chapter and its effects to them.
* TomeOfEldritchLore: It essentially ''is'' one.
* VerbalTic:
** Depending on the translation, "squideed" or "outdeed" for "indeed", followed by a hasty correction.
** In the Italian translation he often says "come persona e come pagina" (as person and as page).

[[folder:The Clown]]

Insanity incarnate, it was born as a result of the madness Asura released into the world. Maka and Soul first encountered it in a twisted factory where it tried to drive them both insane, but they defeated it with Maka's anti-demon wavelength. It escaped, and has since allied itself with Noah's team and with Justin Law in particular. Until they find the Kishin on the Moon and they abandon Noah for Asura's clown armies.
------
* AdaptationalHeroism: The Clown and its {{Palette Swap}}ped double appear in the anime, but instead of having anything to do with Asura they're mechanical guardians of the key to Brew. They stilled killed quite a few innocent people, though.
* CombatTentacles: White Rabbit's main weapons.
* TheCorruption:
** It and the Black Clown spread insanity just by existing.
** In turn, the Clowns rise from the corruption of Asura's insanity. [[spoiler: Asura's dwelling is ''packed'' with them.]]
%%* EldritchAbomination
* EnergyWeapon: Moonlight's main form of attack.
* FusionDance: The Clown can merge with other beings to empower them. [[spoiler:Justin fuses with a clown to become more powerful himself, while Medusa fuses her artificial Clown with her snakes]].
* HypocriticalHumour: Kaguya, the one accusing Kid to be a peeping pervert, not only is nearly naked but has circled breasts to boot.
* MindRape: Pulls a particularly nasty one on Maka.
* MonsterClown: On top of being scary as hell, its body is so twisted that it's barely recognizable as a clown at all. Presumably, one look at it would make Death the Kid's head explode.
* {{Mooks}}: [[spoiler:Asura has his own army of Clowns]].
** EliteMooks: [[spoiler: Moonlight, White Rabbit and Kaguya are basically this, since they are more powerful than the other Clowns and have their own powers. Others appeared later]].
** GiantMook: [[spoiler: the giant spider-like clown on the Moon.]]
** SuperpoweredMooks: [[spoiler: Moonlight, White Rabbit and Kaguya again]].
* NotQuiteDead: After being cut in half by Maka's Demon Hunter, it revived, freaked them out one last time, and disappeared. The attack apparently caused some lasting damage, because now its head is even more deformed than usual.
* PlayingWithFire: Kaguya can also use fire attacks.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Clown Kaguya is aware she's practically naked and constantly teases Kid about it.
* ShoutOut: Kaguya and her attacks are modelled after her mythological self.
* {{Troll}}: Kaguya costantly treats Kid and the other attackers as a bunch of sick perverts wanting to molest her and mocks them about it. Non-stop.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: The First Clown tries to kill Maka with a lariat.

* CreepyChild: [[spoiler: Not her fault. Dammit, Medusa.]]
* EvilCostumeSwitch: [[spoiler:She wears a black dress similar to Medusa's own when possessed.]]
* HumanShield: [[spoiler: Medusa not only possesses her, but uses her as a hostage: yeah, she ''did'' promise to leave Rachel's body, but it doesn't mean she can't use Rachel's age and pawn condition to her advantage. 829----
* AdaptationalVillainy: [[spoiler: In the anime he tries to take over Soul's body the more he used the Black Blood's power. This was due to the fact the manga hadn't ended yet and the showrunners wanted to do something with him.]] The manga does lampshade and poke fun at this though.
* TheCorrupter: As he's a representation of the black blood inside Soul. [[spoiler: Subverted in the manga, while the Black Blood gave him form, it's revealed he's really Soul's potential that's he's been suppressing due to his doubt.]]
* DealWithTheDevil: Gives off this vibe. He even looks like a red devil.
* EatenAlive: [[spoiler: In the anime, he attempts this on Soul when he taps into too much of the black blood's power. Soul returns the favor after regaining control of his body.]]
* EnemyWithin: Soul treats him like this, as he's the embodiment of Black Blood that constantly tempts him to use it in a pitch, but doing so the first time turned the Soul into TheBerserker. 835%%* TheImp
* JerkassHasAPoint: In some cases in losing fights, the only way out of them is to use the black blood's power.
* MakeMyMonsterGrow: In the anime, grows to huge size when Soul feeds him too much power. [[MythologyGag He appeared to do this in the manga as well]], but in that case it was just a mech he was driving.
* NoNameGiven: He's never referred to by any name; even "little ogre" just comes from the anime's credits.
* PerpetualSmiler: Bordering on Slasher Smile at times.
%%* SharpDressedMan

A hunchback evil human that appears exclusively in the video game ''Monotone Princess''. He guards a cocoon with a soul inside of it and is the second boss. He fights with a huge bell.
----
* BadassNormal: Moreso than a lot of other Evil Humans, he's not fast, but he is very skilled with that bell, attacking and defending in equal measure. In fact he's one of the few Evil Humans Maka has faced that has actually managed to hurt her.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: He weilds a large copper bell to smash people with and can summon more to fall on top of people.
* LanternJawOfJustice: one that always covers one side of his mouth.
* MightyGlacier: he moves rather slowly, but can perform such feats as deflecting Black Star's weapon with his bare hand, and smash through architecture.

A werewolf from Germany who steals one of the cocoons with an evil human's soul inside it during the events of ''Monotone Princess''. He attacks those who enter his castle with metal claws.
----
* JaggedMouth: A square shaped one, as opposed to the usual serrated version. it adds on to his skeletal appearance.
* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: He's a bony, nearly hairless werewolf who eats souls and cannot turn back into a human.
* MadeOfIron: He doesn't have immortality like Free does because he ate an innocent soul, but he still takes a lot of concentrated effort to finally bring down.
* StockNinjaWeaponry: His metal claws.
* BlowYouAway: Alone's main fighting style is called "Wind Wolf Fist" and allows him to attack his opponents with air.

* BadassInANiceSuit: It is rather spiffy, belts aside.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: A sword is common, using belts against opponents is not.
* TooManyBelts: He has ''a lot'' wrapping around his face and right arm, and muffle his speaking.

[[folder:Gigant]]

An evil human who was released when the soul cocoon retrieved from Alone hatched while Stein was studying it. It fights Black Star in the library, where it attacks by spinning and stabbing.
----
* AmbiguouslyHuman: The ''only'' reason he's considered an evil human ''at all'' is because an evil human's soul was used to make him.
* ImplacableMan: Nearly got the better of Black Star because of its armor, strength, and reflexes. It took one of Star's most powerful attacks to actually take it down.
* BigCreepyCrawlies: He's a huge ant creature.
* SingleStrokeBattle: Notable in that it was impossible to take down beforehand, and it was fully protected when it happened.
* SpinAttack: Can tuck himself up and spin like a top in order to crush people.
