!!Jade Chan

A ten year old girl from Hong Kong who's currently living with her uncles in San Francisco, and frequently joins their adventures. After being directly exposed to the Ring of Kur-Asan's power, she became half Shadowkhan. Even if she enjoys her powers a lot, she must find a way to return back to human or else she will once again become the Queen of the Shadowkhan.

* ActionGirl: Much more than the original series, thanks to her new powers.
* AmazonBrigade: Is the leader of one (her tribe).
* ComboPlatterPowers: Her set of abilities are actually this:
** CastingAShadow: She can cast dark chi blasts.
** InASingleBound: She got part of the power of the Rooster Talisman.
** SuperSpeed: She got part of the power of the Rabbit Talisman.
** SuperStrength: She got part of the power of the Ox Talisman.
** PowerFloats: Gains limited levitation powers later on.
* ClosetGeek: Although it’s unknown how much Jade expresses her interests, she has made references to Naruto and Pokemon at a couple of points.
* CursedWithAwesome: How Jade sees her actual state. She enjoys her power, but is wary about what she will become if she doesn't return to human.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Despite being a Shadowkhan, she wants to use her powers for good.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: She doesn’t know how to drive, so when she tries to instruct one of her Shadowkhan to do so, HilarityEnsues.
* TheHero
* HenshinHero: Can switch between human and Shadowkhan forms at will, but needs to be Shadowkhan in order to use her abilities.
* ImmortalityInducer: Jackie gives Jade the Dog Talisman so she's not harmed during fights.
* KidHero: Since the focus of the story is on her, she escapes the KidSidekick trope and lands here.
* KungFuWizard: Uses a mix of martial arts and magic to fight.
* ShipperOnDeck: Like in canon, she actively ships Jackie/Viper.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Played with. Whenever she goes Shadowkhan, her attitude worsens over time.

!!Jackie Chan

Jade's uncle, who wants to restore Jade back to normal before she becomes completely evil, at all costs.

* AffectionateNickname: Like in canon, Viper sometimes calls him "Babyface".
* ButtMonkey: Like in canon. Hence why Jade gives him the [[HealingFactor Horse Talisman]].
* TheLancer: To Jade's TheHero
* MoralityChain: To Viper. She said Jackie is the main reason she stopped being a criminal and tried to be a better person.

!!Uncle Chan

Jackie's uncle and Jade's great uncle. An old, grumpy chi wizard.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He can be pretty jerky a lot of the time, but truly cares for his family and apprentice.
* KungFuWizard: Though to a much lesser extent than Jade, since he relies mostly on magic to fight, and uses martial arts as a last resort.
* Oldmaster: He managed to hold his own against several Shadowkhan by merely using martial arts.
* TheSmartGuy: Chi Wizard! The Chan Cland's experiment on all things magical.

!!Tohru

A former Dark Hand enforcer, who's now Uncle's chi wizard apprentice.

%%* TheBigGuy
* EasilyForgiven: Jade [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] this, saying how Jackie is perfectly okay with working with a former Dark Hand enforcer who once tried to kill Jade (though Jade herself claims that she also forgave him for his past deeds).
%%* MightyGlacier: Jade lampshades that Tohru is this, and gives him the [[SuperSpeed Rabbit Talisman]] to compensate.

!!Viper

A former thief that, after meeting Jackie, dropped her criminal life, and sometimes joins him in his fight against evil.

%%* ActionGirl
%%* FragileSpeedster: According to Jade, who gives her the [[SuperStrength Ox Talisman]] to compensate.
* LoveInterest: To Jackie.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler: Gets together with Jackie in the SequelHook]].
* PlayingWithFire: Picks the Dragon Talisman when she realizes that the Snake Talisman is gone, since "a dragon is the closest thing to a snake".
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: Like in canon, Jackie couldn't let go of the fact that she used to be a thief. Subverted later when Jackie learns about her past.

!!Captain Black

The head of spy agency Section 13 and one of the Chan family's biggest allies.

* CombatPragmatist: Uses a ''bazooka'' against Kyosuke. It doesn't work, but he deserves credit for trying.
* EleventhHourRanger: Joins the team during the three final chapters.
* EmbarrassingNickname: While in Shadowkhan from, Jade calls him "Baldy", a nickname he doesn't appreciate.
* MissionControl: Arranges transportation for the J-Team whenever they need to get somewhere in a hurry, but rarely participates himself.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Villains]]

!!Daolon Wong

The Darkest Mage, who after escaping prison, found the Ring of Kur-Asan and used it to regain his powers, as well as two talismans. Now seeks to unveil the secrets of the Shadowkhan to gain even more power.

* BigBad: The main one of the story.
** [[spoiler: DiscOneFinalBoss: The Queen strips him of his Shadowkhan powers near the story's end, and he's shortly after re-arrested by the heroes, allowing the Queen to take the role.]]
*** [[spoiler: An apprentice of his then takes on the role of the new BigBad in the SequelHook]].
* CrazyPrepared: Even if he still has the ring, he creates a belt that with slots that will permanently bind the talismans to it, and the belt itself is bound to Wong.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Despite his wide range of powers and abilities, he has a tendency to focus on destructive spells, even in situations where the other spells would be more useful (see ForgotAboutHisPowers).
* EvilSorcerer
* EyeBeams: Thanks to the Pig Talisman.
* FatalFlaw: Though he’s finally beginning to overcome it, his ForgotAboutHisPowers moments in canon was often what led to his defeat.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: Like in canon, he has a wide array of very useful powers and abilities, talismans included, yet in the end he only uses a few of them. Lampshaded by Jade. {{Handwave}}d in the story in that Dark Chi Wizards tend to favor destructive spells over other kind of spells, regardless of how useful they may be.
* TheHeavy: Of all the members of the BigBadEnsemble, he's the most prominent, not to mention is the one who started and is carrying the plot. [[spoiler: Until Chapter 13, when he's re-arrested, loses his power, and the role passes to the Queen.]]
* {{Invisibility}}: Thanks to the Snake Talisman, though he rarely uses it.
* MindOverMatter: Thanks to the Rooster Talisman.
* PowerFloats: Again, Rooster.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: During the battle in the Forge of Shadows, he becomes convinced that he's powerful enough that he doesn't need his Warriors to defeat the J-Team, and can do so himself. [[spoiler: He turns out to be wrong, though only just barely.]]
* VillainTeamUp: With The Phantom.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Thanks to the Monkey Talisman, though he forgot about it until he needed to get to the temple.
* WasOnceAMan: Uses the Temple to turn himself into a Shadowkhan and create his own tribe. [[spoiler: The Queen ultimately reverses the process.]]

!!The Phantom/Kyosuke

The ghost of a Shadowkhan that Daolon Wong summoned by accident. For some reason, he's helping Wong in his goals.

* ArchEnemy: To Tarakudo
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: The whole reason for his FaceHeelTurn was his belief that power only belongs to those strong enough to take it, and thus the Emperor didn't deserve to rule Japan.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler: Uses the combined power of the Dark Treasures to resurrect himself.]]
* TheDragon: [[spoiler:Becomes this to Wong after his resurrection, then to the Queen after Wong's defeat.]]
* EvilVersusEvil: Is opposed to Tarakudo, who betrayed him long ago.
* FallenHero: Used to be a great warrior named Kyosuke, until he was lured to the dark side by the Brotherhood of Shadow, becoming the Dark Champion of the Shadowkhan, leading to his eventual death and transformation into the wraith he is now.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: It's very unclear what his motives are, except that Wong is somehow helpful to them, and that he wants to screw up Tarakudo’s plans as revenge for the Oni king’s betrayal.
** It ultimately turns out that he just wants to raise up a worthy ruler for the Shadowkhan, since he apparently isn't. [[spoiler: He ultimately decides the Queen is more worthy than Wong.]]
* IFightForTheStrongestSide: His life's philosophy. He's helping Wong in the hopes that he'll prove worthy to rule the Shadowkhan. [[spoiler: When he fails, Kyosuke switches loyalties to the Queen.]]
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: [[spoiler: Until his resurrection.]]
* ThePowerOfHate: His rage on his deathbed at Tarakudo's betrayal ensured that his spirit was able to linger on, albeit in the twisted form it now has.
* SealedEvilInACan: Appears to have been the case before the start of the story. [[spoiler: During the FinalBattle, he's trapped inside the Urn of Wei Cheing.]]
* VillainTeamUp: With Wong, to whom he makes no illusions that he's not just using him to further his own goals.
** [[spoiler: He and the Queen cut a deal behind the partners' backs; when the Queen proves to be more of a worthy ruler than Wong, Kyosuke switches loyalties.]]
* WasOnceAMan

!!The Queen of the Shadowkhan

Jade's SuperPoweredEvilSide, who's revived thanks to the Ring of Ku-Asan, and wants to take over Jade's body.

* BigBad: [[spoiler:After getting a body of her own, she usurps Wong's position as main villain.]]
* TheCorruption[=/=]TheCorrupter: She's actually both tropes. She tries to seduce Jade with promises of power, at the same time she slowly uses her dark magic to influence Jade's body and spirit.
* DaddysLittleVillain: At least how Tarakudo sees her, since she was created from a tattoo made from his seal.
* EnemyWithin: To Jade.
* EnemyWithout: [[spoiler:When she manages to complete her corruption, the Tiger Talisman splits her and Jade apart, giving the Queen her own body.]]
* EvilerThanThou: [[spoiler:She defeats Wong, strips him of his power, and proves to be a more worthy ruler of the Shadowkhan.]]
* FashionVictimVillain: According to Jade, at least. [[invoked]]
* FauxAffablyEvil
* FreudianSlip: She slips at one point, forgetting to include Tarakudo in a statement about gaining freedom, only to hastily correct herself. Tarakudo lets her know that he caught the slip before leaving.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: She even lampshades this trope when she says that Queens are feared and respected.
* PutOnABus: She is attacked by the Phantom in the MentalWorld she occupies, and her state is currently unknown (though she’s still around).
** [[spoiler: TheBusCameBack: When her corruption of Jade results in the Tiger Talisman splitting them apart, she's able to re-enter the game. And then reveals her absence was part of her deal with Kyosuke -- corrupting Jade without directly interacting with her.]]
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Like her canon counterpart, she still wears a long black and purple dress that bares her legs and exposes her cleavage (that is, if she had any cleavage to begin with). Lampshaded by the narration.
* VillainousBreakdown: When the Phantom attacks her in her MentalWorld she quickly starts begging for mercy.
* VillainTeamUp: With Tarakudo, though she seems to be chafing under his control.
** [[spoiler: She and Kyosuke cut a deal behind their partners' backs; when the Queen proves a more worthy ruler than Wong, Kyosuke switches loyalties to her.]]

!!Tarakudo

The Lord of All Oni, who's trapped in the Shadow Realm, and plans to use the Queen of the Shadowkhan to escape.

* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Betrayed Kyosuke back in the day for no real reason other than his own selfishness. [[spoiler: The Queen is aware he'll do so to her too once she's no longer needed, so betrays him first.]]
* EvilVersusEvil: Is opposed by The Phantom, who he betrayed long ago.
* SealedEvilInACan: Is trapped in the Shadow Realm.
* VillainTeamUp: With the Queen, though he's clearly the dominant partner. [[spoiler: Or so he thinks.]]

!!Ironfist, Fang and Tempest

Daolon Wong's new Dark Chi Warriors.

* TheBrute: Ironfist
* DarkActionGirl: Fang.
* FighterMageThief: Ironfist is the fighter, Tempest the mage and Fang the thief.
* MageKiller: Fang was created to serve as this; one of her energy daggers can temporarily disable magic.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: The story mentions that they were created from corpses. Still it's downplayed, since their undead nature is never brought up.
* QuirkyMinibossSquad: More so than Wong's original dark chi warriors, in that they actually have personalities.
* SmashMook: Ironfist.
* SquishyWizard: Tempest.
* ThirdPersonPerson: How Fang speaks.
* WeatherManipulation: Tempest's main power.

!!Shendu

The Demon Sorcerer of Fire and the Chan family's ArchEnemy. Is currently imprisoned [[TakenForGranite as a statue]] in Section 13.

* ArchEnemy: To the Chans.
* PutOnABus: Has disappeared from the story after Wong’s escape with the Monkey and Snake Talismans.
* SealedEvilInACan: Is trapped as a statue. He tries to escape early on via his Shadowkhan, but is stopped.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Delivers one to Wong shortly before his escape attempt.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Was originally going to join the BigBadEnsemble, until the author's beta pointed out that he needed ALL his talismans to escape his statue form, which wasn't possible as the story was written.
