However he had plans of his own, and ForScience he hunted down the GS Ball from Ash to unlock its secret of the sealed evolution. Even though defeated, his influence still lingers as it was he hinted at the Sealed Evolution and encouraged Team Rocket to take part in unlocking it.

36	The main villains of the anime series, Jessie, James, and Meowth are always planning up a way to capture Ash's Pikachu, who they have deemed to be exceptionally special, strong, and worthy of giving as a gift to their boss, Giovanni. Originally, they usually worked as a stand-alone branch of Team Rocket. This even lead Giovanni to forget that they were members of the crime organization to begin with!

They were part of unleashing the sealed evolution, by breaking Giratina out of the Distortion World. They latter appeared, having used Jessie and James to test the Team Rocket's digivice on controlling shadow.
