\
One of the founding members of Overwatch, Ana uses her skills and expertise to defend her home and the people she cares for.
\
As the Omnic Crisis inflicted a heavy toll on Egypt, the country's depleted and undermanned security forces relied on elite snipers for support. Among them was Ana Amari, who was widely considered to be the world's best. Her superior marksmanship, decision-making, and instincts made her a natural selection to join the Overwatch strike team that would end the war.
\
Following the success of Overwatch's original mission, Ana served for many years as Strike Commander Morrison's second-in-command. Despite her responsibilities in leading the organization, Ana refused to step away from combat operations. She remained on active duty well into her fifties, until she was believed to have been killed during a hostage rescue mission by the Talon operative known as Widowmaker.
\
In truth, Ana survived that encounter, despite being gravely wounded and losing her right eye. During her recovery, she wrestled with the weight of a life spent in combat, and she chose to stay out of the world's growing conflicts. However, as time passed, she realized she could not sit on the sidelines while people threatened her city and the innocents around her.
\
Now, Ana has rejoined the fight to protect her country from the forces that would destabilize it, and most importantly, to keep her family and her closest allies safe.
\
Ana is a Support sniper, assisting her allies from long-range while also being able to suppress the enemy team.
* Her '''[[HealingShiv Biotic Rifle]]''' is a sniper rifle with a zoom-in function, but while it deals fixed damage and cannot deal extra damage on headshots, it instead firing darts that will heal allies just as well as they hurt enemies over time.
* '''[[TranquilizerDart Sleep Dart]]''' has her draw her sidearm and fire a dart capable of knocking out a single enemy instantly. A sleeping enemy will wake up upon taking damage.
* '''[[TrickBomb Biotic Grenade]]''' will slightly heal all allies and slightly damage all enemies in its area of effect and apply a temporary buff/debuff to them: allies will receive increased healing from all sources for the duration of the buff, while enemies are prevented from being healed at all.
* Her ultimate, '''[[StatusBuff Nano-Boost]]''', allows her to supercharge one ally, increasing their damage output and damage resistance.
-----
* AbnormalAmmo: Ana's rifle fires darts that are capable of [[DamageDiscrimination selectively healing or harming depending on whether they hit an ally or an enemy.]] How can one dart do both? How does it know which to do? [[MST3KMantra Who knows?]] An in-universe explanation is that she carries around multiple types of ammo, meaning she's able to swap between them on the fly. How they don’t heal an enemy if she misses an ally but hits them, or vice versa, [[VoodooShark is another question]].
* ActionMom: Mother to Fareeha Amari (aka Pharah), Ana's returned to the fight to protect her daughter and her closest allies.
* AlliterativeName: '''A'''na '''A'''mari.
* AlwaysAccurateAttack: Her ''Nano Boost''. It's technically not an attack, since it cannot be used to directly harm anyone, but the dart locks on to the teammate of her choice, and cannot be redirected or destroyed by enemy abilities such as ''Deflect'' or ''Defense Matrix''.
* AnimalMotif:
** Birds, like her daughter, though in her case it's more subtle. The white hair emerging from her hood resembles a hooked beak in her concept art and most of her victory poses. The 2019 winter event gives her an owl-themed skin.
** As of "Bastet", she takes up the identity of the titular [[Myth/EgyptianMythology cat-themed goddess]].
* AntiFrustrationFeatures:
** Most of Ana's heals come from her ''Biotic Rifle'', which requires her to land consecutive shots. To make hitting allies easier, especially smaller and faster ones, [[HitboxDissonance their hitboxes are deliberately larger than those of enemies.]]
** ''Nano-Boost'' locks onto an ally and activates near-instantly, meaning unlike every other ability in her arsenal, you can't miss with it. [[ZigZaggingTrope Of course,]] because of this automatic lock-on, you'll still want to be careful as to pick the right target, as there have been many reported cases of Ana accidentally boosting a Lúcio near her intended target or jumping in front of her from nowhere (though it's since been patched in to allow you to adjust the lock-on sensitivity).
* AntiRegeneration: Her Biotic Grenade prevents enemies from healing temporarily.
* ArchEnemy: Widowmaker; the latter is responsible for Ana's missing eye and the decision to fake her death.
** If the two meet each other again, Widowmaker taunts the aged and weathered Ana, and Ana snipes back by saying Gerard was a fool to love her. [[TraumaButton Which is one of the few things that Widowmaker shows a strong reaction to anymore.]] Later, when Ana has learned the full details and apologizes for the misunderstanding, Widow does ''not'' accept.
** If Widowmaker eliminates Pharah, she mocks "Like mother, like daughter", and if Ana eliminates her, Ana throws back her "One shot, one kill" line.
* BadassLongcoat: She wears a tattered, but badass gray-hooded sniper's coat with blue highlights. Her Origins skin gives her a blue trench coat that she used to wear when Overwatch was still active.
* BadassFamily: Together with her daughter Pharah, both being battle-hardened playable heroes.
* BayonetYa: Her Biotic Rifle in her Corsair skin has a bayonet attached, but it is simply [[OrnamentalWeapon ornamental]].
* BecomingTheCostume:
** While equipped with her "Captain Amari" or "Horus" skin (which are supposed to represent her when she was on duty for Overwatch), the line her team hears upon switching to her is changed from "Ana, checking in" to "Captain Amari, reporting for duty."
** While equipped with her pirate-themed "Corsair" skin, she gains "Ahoy matey" as a "Hello" line.
** "A-7000 Wargod" is designed to be [[EvilKnockoff a robotic clone]] that was an attempt to replicate Ana's consciousness and abilities for Null Sector. Much of Ana's voice lines while using the skin are adjusted accordingly, being far more technical, cold, and ruthless. Among the many new lines is her new ultimate callout: "You're powered up! ''[[KillAllHumans Destroy them!]]''"
* BilingualBonus: She has several quotes in Egyptian Arabic.
* BlueIsHeroic: Blue features prominently in her outfit, and even more so with her BadassLongcoat when she was still active in Overwatch.
* BondOneLiner: When she uses a ''Sleep Dart'' to shut down Pharah's ultimate, this line may be heard:
-->'''Pharah:''' JUSTICE RAINS FROM ABO-\
'''Ana:''' I think justice could use a little nap.
* BraidsOfAction: She wears her hair in a single braid, though when she was younger, she let her hair loose.
* BreakoutCharacter: Ana's unique healing sniper playstyle has launched into an instant favorite of the fans, which led her to be featured prominently in anything related to the lore and promotional material, as well as a playable character in ''VideoGame/HeroesOfTheStorm'', eclipsing fellow Overwatch members that have been in the game since launch.
* BroughtDownToBadass: Lost her cybernetic eye during her last mission with Overwatch and has refused to get it replaced by either a new prosthetic or through Mercy growing her a new one. The lack of it only slowed her down a tad.
* BrutalHonesty: When teamed up with Reaper, he tries to wax nostalgic about their time together in the past, only for Ana to make it bluntly clear that's not what's happening here.
-->'''Reaper:''' Just like old times.\
'''Ana:''' Right. [[{{Dissimile}} Except for the part]] where ''you'' became a homicidal murderer.
* CallBack: A really weird example with highlight intros, in that at least two of hers appear to have continuity, with the final angle of "Locked On" being the exact same as the first angle of "Guardian". Additionally, the final angle of "Guardian" is her whipping out her ''Sleep Dart'' pistol, and "Shhh..." is from the POV of some poor sap hit by it, implying there's continuity between those too.
* CallSign: Back when she was part of the Egyptian Military during the Omnic Crisis, Ana's call sign was "Horus".
* CherryTapping: Getting a kill with ''Sleep Dart'' is this, as it only deals a measly 5 damage per hit.
* ColdSniper: She used to be one in her prime, but later came to regret all of the lives she had taken. Has moved into FriendlySniper territory since.
* CombatMedic: She has as many options for shutting down enemies as boosting up allies, and they're often not ignorable when they hit properly ([[DifficultButAwesome though you actually have to hit properly]]).
* CoolMask: The visor for her "Shrike" Epic skin qualifies as this, as do the masks on her "Wadjet" and "Wasteland" Legendary skins. Her additional Epic skins added in event updates continue the trend of cool masks, giving her a Jack-o'-Lantern-style visor in her "Ghoul" skin, and a somewhat unnerving Korean ''tal'' mask in her "Tal" skin.
* CoolOldLady: To the younger Overwatch members. Winston mentions to Pharah that her mother was a hero to him and "all of us". Hell, even ''Cassidy'' calls her "ma'am", with respect.
* CriticalHesitationBlunder: Her last official mission under Overwatch involved her in a SniperDuel with a long-lost friend. The shock of the realization led to Ana's supposed demise, and neither she nor the culprit ever let it down.
* DamageDiscrimination: Ana's ''Biotic Rifle'' either [[HealingShiv heals]] or [[PoisonedWeapons hurts]] her targets depending on whether or not you're on her team. This separation is even more noticeable with her ''Biotic Grenade'', which can simultaneously heal/buff allies and damage/debuff enemies.
* DamageOverTime: Ana's Biotic Rifle shots either heal or deal damage in four rapid intervals within approximately 0.85 seconds of a dart landing.
* DeadpanSnarker: Several of her lines and interactions have her as this.
* DentedIron: While she's still fighting in the present day, she's no longer a crack shot like she was in her prime, due to having had her dominant eye shot out. As such, she became a supporting hero.
* DifficultButAwesome: Ana is generally seen as one of the most mechanically-demanding heroes in the game, with a variety of hit-based powers that can easily miss, and one that punishes tunnel-vision very harshly, demanding very broad-scope awareness of the game to make use of all the tools at her disposal. She also has a harder time staying alive than other Support Heroes, as while they either have regenerating shields or a HealingFactor of some sort, Ana has only her ''Biotic Grenade'' to heal herself, and it's a burst of recovery that takes time to cool down rather than a recovery-over-time passive ability. However, she is also capable of some of the most high-impact plays in the game, with her tremendous amount of utility.
* ElectronicEyes: Before it got shot out, her right eye was cybernetic, making her vision six times greater than normal.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: She's not evil herself, but in the comic that was released after she was added to the game, after giving a rundown of her team and their families, she acknowledges that her enemies most likely have people that care about them too.
* EveryBulletIsATracer: Her Biotic Rifle shots leave behind tracers, though these are only lasting and visible if she uses the scope. If she fires from the hip, the trails will be much thinner and will fade out almost immediately.
* EvilKnockoff: Ana's A-7000 War God skin is stated to be an omnic model built to replicate her skill and ruthlessness in the battlefield by the BigBad of the ''Invasion'' storyline Ramattra, but its data bank was corrupted due to Ana's memories. This model was one of the {{Elite Mook}}s during the Invasion storyline.
* EyeScream: She lost her right eye during a moment of hesitation via ScopeSnipe thanks to Widowmaker. While she knows that she can probably get it fixed (especially since it was already a cybernetic implant to begin with), she decided to leave her wound as a personal reminder.
* EyepatchOfPower: She wears an eyepatch over her lost eye.
* FakeArmDisarm: The eye she lost to Widowmaker was a cybernetic implant to begin with, meant to augment her sniping talent.
* FakingTheDead: She was content to let many people believe she died after her failed mission hospitalized her. She most probably received help from her medical team regarding the cover-up.
* FollowInMyFootsteps: Subverted. Despite what her former co-workers assumed, Ana never wanted her daughter to join Overwatch, since Pharah would be exposed to the same violence and death as she had been and forced to make the same difficult decisions as she had done.
* ForcedSleep: What being hit with the Sleep Dart does.
* FriendlySniper: Looking past the fact that [[HealingShiv her shots heal allies]], she's on pretty good terms with her teammates and has a [[TeamMom supportive]], [[TheSnarkKnight if not occasionally mockingly snarky]] attitude.
* TheGadfly: In her elderly years, Ana has developed a knack for jokes and quips specifically designed to mock opponents or get under their skin. Glimpses of Ana in her youth have shown her as serious and focused. The current Ana, however, does things like throw her enemies' catchphrases back at them after a kill, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_iZHHrjP48 feign motherly concern for them while putting them to sleep]], brush off their own insults with sarcastic quips, and specifically insult them or people they once cared about to get under their skin.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation:
** During her trailer, Ana is camping at the top of the gate at the choke point of Temple of Anubis. Note that you require really good mobility skills to even get in there (e.g: Pharah's jetpack, Widowmaker's hook, Genji's Swift Strike). In gameplay, there's no way Ana could make it there by herself because she has absolutely no mobility skills.
** Ana's ''Sleep Darts'' work on just about everyone in the game short of turrets and drones. In the story proper, they fail to knock out Reaper and probably won't have any effect on Omnics.
** In the comic "Old Soldiers", it is shown that Ana has separate dart types she uses depending on whether she will heal or hurt her target, and during Soldier: 76's fistfight with Reaper, Ana holds her fire, fearing she might hit the wrong target. Ana players will have no such thing to worry about during gameplay, since there is no friendly fire mechanic and the game automatically determines which dart she uses based on whether she hits a friend or foe.
* GoneHorriblyRight: A non-negative example, except from Ana's personal perspective. Ana's main motivation in the old days of Overwatch was to create a better future for her daughter and to set an example that taught her to stand up for what's right. That's why she made it so that Fareeha would grow up in the presence of heroic role models. It worked -- but to Ana's horror, it worked ''too well''. Fareeha didn't just look up to those heroes, she wanted to ''join them''.
* HandicappedBadass: You'd think that the loss of an eye would be a detriment to a sniper, but Ana makes it work.
* HealThyself: The ''Biotic Grenade's'' healing effects apply to everyone on her team, including herself, allowing her to recover in a pinch by dropping one at her feet.
* HealingShiv: Her gameplay is based around this. Her rifle is a weaponized version of Mercy's ''Caduceus Staff'' that either does direct damage to foes or gives allies a quick heal-over-time with each shot, and her ''Biotic Grenade'' restores a decent amount of HP to all allies hit but prevents tagged enemies from healing at all.
* {{Hitscan}}: Her ''Biotic Rifle'', but only when scoped in; otherwise it uses projectiles with tiny but non-zero travel time.
* HitboxDissonance: When shooting teammates with the ''[[HealingShiv Biotic Rifle]]'', their hitbox extends noticeably further than their visible model. [[AntiFrustrationFeatures Healing a small or fast teammate would be pretty frustrating otherwise.]]
* HypocriticalHumor: Ana, who faked her death for years, a very close friend of Jack Morrison, who also faked his death for years, has an unlockable voiceline in "Everyone dies."
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: She didn't like the horrible things she did in her career, but she justified it as JustFollowingOrders. That, and killing her foes was a much better option than letting innocents die.
* IWasQuiteALooker: As shown in her "Captain Amari", "Horus", and "Sniper" skins, she looked like a long-haired Pharah when she was younger. Now, her hair has gone completely white, and she shows visible signs of aging. She knows she's still hot, though.
-->''(Upon killing a young opponent with a Captain Amari or Horus skin)'' "Age before beauty, and I've got you on both."
* IdentityAmnesia: She had a bout of this after she lost her SniperDuel with Widowmaker and went MIA, waking up in a hospital in Poland without any memory of who she was, temporarily going by "Janina Kowalski" (an equivalent to "[[MrSmith Jane Doe]]") for her several-month stay.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Was actually Widowmaker's ''superior'' as a markswoman and would have won their SniperDuel if she hadn't seen Amélie's face. The resulting shock made Ana hesitate long enough for Widowmaker to pull the trigger first. Even though the loss of an eye should have crippled her depth perception and ended her career as a sniper, she can still wield her Biotic Rifle with pinpoint accuracy at incredible distances. If anything, her aiming skills are even more improbable if one considers the fact that she's right-handed, and lost her ''right'' eye, meaning Ana would be aiming with her EyepatchOfPower and still lands her shots.
* InstantSedation: Any enemy hit by ''Sleep Dart'' drops on the spot, this includes omnics, Genji and D.Va's mecha.
* InterfaceScrew: Players who fall victim to ''Sleep Dart'' have all sounds slurred until they wake back up.
* ItemAmplifier: Her Biotic Grenade temporarily increases the amount of healing gained for herself and allies from any sources.
* KeepingTheHandicap: When Mercy says there are procedures she could use to restore Ana's missing eye, Ana declines, saying that she's comfortable with who she is now and that her missing eye is a good reminder to push forward in life.
* KnightInSourArmor: Ana will still do the correct thing, but like Mercy, she's not too sold on the idea of Overwatch coming back.
* TheLancer: To Jack during Overwatch's original run. After Overwatch's dissolution, she continues to be this to him, as both are presumed dead and have become vigilantes.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: The narration in "Bastet" mentions that Ana, Jack, and Gabriel were like siblings to each other during Overwatch's golden years.
* LikeMotherLikeDaughter: DoubleSubverted. Ana and Pharah are very different types of people, in terms of personality. And Ana never wanted her daughter to experience the horrors of war, and tried to discourage her from joining the military. Subverted because Pharah still inherited her mother's ideals of courage and justice, and although Pharah went against her wishes, Ana is very proud of her. When Pharah gets a kill, Ana proudly states, "Like mother, like daughter".
** When Widowmaker gets a kill on Pharah, [[IronicEcho she says the same thing...]]
* MamaBear: She is called this by her teammates in the "Legacy" comic. When they were attacked by two snipers, she ignored the retreat orders and went after them. It didn't end well.
* MartialPacifist: She's tired of all the killing she's had to do over the years, leading to her decision to use her Biotic Rifle over her old Overwatch-issued sniper rifle to support her allies from the rear rather than handle all of the killing herself.
* MidBattleTeaBreak: One of her emotes has her prepare tea in a dainty teacup. Possibly a StealthPun: she's ''teabagging''.
* MissingMom: Pharah tells Winston that he "probably" knew her mother better than she did.
* MilitarySuperhero: A member of a legendary strike team that became the foundation of Overwatch.
* MoeGreeneSpecial: Years ago in Egypt, she was on the receiving end of this courtesy of Widowmaker, as shown in ''Legacy.'' Miraculously, she survived and is now back in the fight once again, now sporting an EyepatchOfPower.
* AMotherToHerMen: She was this to her soldiers back in the days of Overwatch. One even called her "Mama Bear."
* MutualDisadvantage: The most effective counter to an Ana ''Nano-Boosting'' her teammate's ultimate is ''another'' Ana on the opposite team using her ''Sleep Dart''.
* MyGreatestFailure:
** She still regrets the moment of hesitation she suffered when she had Widowmaker in her sights, giving Widowmaker the opportunity to take the first shot. It's implied that Ana's mistake led to the failure of the mission and the deaths of many innocent people. Despite offers to have her blown-out eye restored, she chooses to keep it the way it is, as a personal reminder of her life-ending blunder.
** In "Bastet", Ana claims responsibility for "shut[ting] down the Anubis project" during her time in Overwatch, which had apparently left Egypt in a crime-infested state. [[NoodleIncident Exactly what that entailed isn't elaborated upon]], but the guilt was enough to motivate her return to action, fighting the crime left in its wake.
* MythicalMotifs: As of "Bastet", she takes up the identity of the titular [[Myth/EgyptianMythology cat-themed goddess]].
* NeverMessWithGranny: Ana was in combat operations as late as her 50s, and is in her 60s by the time of the game. Yet, she is still capable of keeping up with fighters 1/3rd of her age, and going toe to toe with super soldiers (as seen in "Old Soldiers" where she bests Reaper in hand to hand combat, despite Reaper being a super soldier AND having additional powers granted from his wraith-like status)!
* NegatedMomentOfAwesome: The most obvious use of ''Sleep Dart'' (which is even showcased in her trailer on an unfortunate Cassidy) is to knock an enemy out as they're using their Ultimate. Sweet dreams!
* NoodleIncident: One of her pre-game voice lines in Volskaya Industries is "I shouldn't overstay my welcome. I'm probably still on the watchlist here." No further explanation is ever offered.
* NoScope: Using the ''Biotic Rifle's'' scope doesn't increase damage or accuracy, it just zooms in and makes the weapon {{hitscan}} instead of firing a projectile you'll have to lead. Even unscoped, the projectile's speed is pretty fast, so you have to be at very long range (or having difficulty aiming at a small or mobile target) for it to be worth the loss of peripheral vision and speed. [[LampshadeHanging Ana has a voice line acknowledging such.]]
-->'''Ana:''' No scope needed.
* NotTheIntendedUse: Her ''Biotic Grenade'' could be used as an impromptu minesweeper, by chucking one at an enemy Wrecking Ball's ''Minefield''. The grenade's big splash and reasonably high damage could clear out a large number of mines if aimed properly, while also healing any ally that could be within the area of effect at the time.
* NumberTwo: Was Strike Commander Morrison's second-in-command, according to her profile.
* ObviousRulePatch: Ana's ''Nano-Boost'' can normally only be cast on an ally, effectively making it a dead ultimate in Free-For-All Deathmatch where it's every man for himself. In May 2018, the ability was tweaked in that mode so she uses it on herself instead.
* OlderHeroVsYoungerVillain: The Older Hero to Widowmaker's Younger Villain. Ana is nearly twice her age.
* OlderThanTheyLook: She’s in her sixties, but besides the white hair she looks like she’s in her late 30s. Seems that age has been very kind to her.
* ParentsAsPeople: While Ana tried to raise her daughter as best as she can, training her in both martial arts and raising her alongside the greatest heroes of their time, some of Pharah's lines in-game when interacting with former Overwatch members seem to indicate that she may not have been the best mother to Pharah. Following her playable reveal, it's shown not to be as bad as previously thought: she was an alright parent, but simply didn't like the idea of Pharah joining Overwatch, trying to prevent her daughter from suffering the same moral dilemmas and tragedy that she did.
* PhraseCatcher:
** She says Pharah's "Justice Rains From Above" catchphrase, except in her native Arabic. It's possible Pharah got it from ''her''.
*** If she sleep darts an Ulting Pharah, she quips, "I think justice could use a little nap."
** If she kills Widowmaker, she mockingly repeats her catchprase, "One shot, one kill".
** The most common phrase used among all heroes hit with her ''Nano-Boost'' is some variation of the phrase "I am unstoppable!"
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Her official height hasn't been officially stated, but she looks tiny compared to most of other characters besides Torbjörn. Though she stands hunched over in combat, she's not much taller when standing straight, either. However, this hasn't stopped her from being the world's greatest sniper.
* PlatonicLifePartners: Lifelong friends with Jack, who was the leader of Overwatch. Even now, after Overwatch disbanded and they're wanted by both the law and Talon, they still fight together and look out for each other out of a bond that's lasted decades.
* PoisonedWeapons: When not healing allies, Ana's ''Biotic Rifle'' fires darts filled with a UniversalPoison that deals DamageOverTime.
* PowerGlows: Nano-Boost has a side effect of surrounding its target with bolts of electricity and team-colored aura.
* PreAssKickingOneLiner: Her ''Nano-Boost'' makes its recipient bellow one, depending on the character.
-->'''Reinhardt:''' Are you ready? HERE I COME!\
'''Soldier: 76:''' Get out of my way!
* RetiredBadass: She briefly retired from hero work after nearly being killed by Widowmaker, but eventually returned to her old line of work when she could no longer ignore the state the world was in.
* SeenItAll: Part of her snarky demeanor comes from the fact that she's seen the worst the world can offer and has survived it. While healing her teammates, she'll tell them things like "I've seen worse. You're going to live" and when respawning, she states "I've come back from worse". One pre-fight line she has also goes, "There's ''nothing'' I haven't seen before. Stick together -- we ''will'' complete our mission."
* ShipTease:
** Between her, Soldier: 76, and Reaper, especially with the former. Reaper claims that [[spoiler:back when Overwatch was still around, Ana had no difficulty siding with Morrison instead of him. Whether this was because of ideals or love is not known]]. She also claimed to come out of hiding because she cares about Jack and thinks he need someone to watch his back, coupled with the fact that the two of them have many friendly banter in the game. However, the ship was thoroughly sunk after "Bastet" confirmed Jack is gay and heavily implies that he's still in love with his ex-boyfriend.
** Also between her and Reinhardt, given the slightly flirty nature of one of their pre-game interactions. The people who call Mercy and Soldier: 76 "Mom and Dad" have taken to calling Reinhardt and Ana "Grandpa and Grandma" now.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Time and war had not been kind to Ana. First, the reason why she got heavily injured was the realization that it was her former friend (Amélie/Widowmaker) who's the villain, causing her to hesitate and get gravely injured (she couldn't even know about how Talon modified her to be like that). Then, not only did she have to deal with Overwatch's fall and the separation of her former friends (with one of them performing a FaceHeelTurn), but the things she did in her career constantly plague her conscience. Despite what her co-workers believed, she hoped that Pharah (who idolized Overwatch) would never become an Overwatch agent so she wouldn't experience the same horrors she had to go through. Her guilt and regret was to the point where she even believed that people assuming she was killed by Widowmaker was for the best.
* SilverFox: She's 62 by ''2'' but has aged quite gracefully and looks very distinguished.
* SlainInTheirSleep: Although getting a kill with ''Sleep Dart'' is incredibly rare, as it only does 5 damage, it ''can'' be a setup for a kill, either through the target subsequently taking enough burst damage (any hit will awaken them) to finish them off or tranquilizing the target over a {{Bottomless Pit|s}}.
* TheSnarkKnight: Ana is one of the snarkiest characters in the entire game, with many of her lines, emotes, and a highlight intro have her behaving in a mocking, humorous tone.
* SniperDuel: Her losing one of these to Widowmaker resulted in the loss of her right eye.
* SoProudOfYou: Although Pharah doesn't believe it to be the case, Ana does show that she's proud of what her daughter has become. Most notably, if she witnesses Pharah get a kill, she'll state, "Like mother, like daughter".
* SpeechImpediment: Her English lines have a lisp that's very common to Egyptians speaking the language.
* StatusBuff:
** ''Biotic Grenade'' buffs any healing effects that affected teammates receive for a short period of time.
** Her Ultimate, ''Nano-Boost'', which boosts damage output and damage resistance (and in a previous build, movement speed), turning virtually any teammate into a line-breaking juggernaut.
--->وريهم قوتك! [[note]]"Wareehom Ew-wetak!" or "Show them your strength!"[[/note]]
* StatusInflictionAttack: Her Sleep Dart causes ForcedSleep and deals [[FixedDamageAttack 5 damage]].
* StepfordSnarker: Ana is deeply troubled, conflicted, and haunted by her past -- both the people she's failed to save and those she killed herself. She never fully recovered from the horrors of war. In the years since she faked her death, however, [[TheSnarkKnight she's developed a]] ''[[TheSnarkKnight very]]'' [[TheSnarkKnight snarky attitude]] and penchant for {{troll}}ing. The majority of her lines in-game are either [[TeamMom motherly words of encouragement]] or [[BondOneLiner one-liners mocking her opponents]]. Or, in the case of Pharah, [[ToughLove both.]]
* StillWearingTheOldColors: Her default outfit still has Overwatch's primary colors (blue and black) and the Overwatch emblem can be seen on her shoulder armor.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: In her youth, she looked almost exactly like her daughter. Shown very explicitly in the "[[https://i.imgur.com/rhv0rBS.jpg Horus]]" and "[[https://i.imgur.com/XgA9E6X.jpg Captain Amari]]" Legendary skins.
* TeamMom: She is very protective of her team and often tries to calm down injured allies while she heals them.
* SymbolicCastFadeout: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzFWIw7wV8Q Her Origin Story]] has a picture of Ana and her daughter Pharah. As she become a more active members of Overwatch, more characters beginning to appear in the picture, symbolize them getting closer to her inner circle. As her regret towards the actions she took and the corruption within Overwatch grew, the characters beginning to fade out one by one, symbolizing the bond between them beginning to sever.
* TenMinuteRetirement: Her defeat at the hands of Widowmaker took her out of the game for only a few years at most; "Old Soldiers" establishes that she was operating in the shadows even before her official reappearance, much like Soldier: 76.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: She loves her tea.
* TranquilizerDart: One of her attacks has her shoot a ''Sleep Dart'' at targets to stun them temporarily (though any damage done to stunned enemies will quickly rouse them again).
* TrickBomb: Her ''Biotic Grenade'' heals allies and gives them a boost to any healing they receive from other sources, while simultaneously damaging enemies and preventing them from being healed.
* TrickBullet: Her ''Biotic Rifle'' heals allies when fired at them.
* UniversalPoison: Her rifle shoots poisoned darts that are capable of affecting both biological and non-biological targets, [[AcceptableBreaksFromReality because game balance]].
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: We're not given the exact sequence of events, but it was entirely possible that Reinhardt's forced retirement was due to the fallout from that fateful mission (whereby Ana's age was blamed for its failure). Without her and Reinhardt around, it seemed inevitable that [[spoiler: Reyes]] and Morrison will come to blows that day at the Swiss HQ. in "Old Soldiers", [[spoiler: Reyes flat out believed that Ana was left behind to die after that mission, without knowing (or caring) that she deliberately hid her survival from the world.]]
* VideoGameCrueltyPotential: It's very obvious that she cares deeply for Pharah, but it's fully possible for them to be on opposite sides, and thus for her to kill her own daughter. Or on the flip-side, force her to [[EnemyMine fight alongside Widowmaker]], who had originally [[EyeScream shot her eye out]], and costed her a mission where several hostages were killed.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Soldier: 76. She is the first person he tracks down to reunite with, and their first dialogue is them joking if Ana would shoot him for ruining her stakeout.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Possibly why she couldn't bring herself to fire upon Widowmaker (who used to be the wife of her friend Gerard Lacroix). The resulting traumatic maiming has since soured her on this trope.
* WhatMeasureIsAMook: Addressed in her background comic. She thinks to herself about the families of the Talon agents she's taking down, but she mentally counters that with her desire to protect her team.
* WoundThatWillNotHeal: ''Biotic Grenade'', when used on enemies, inflicts a debuff that negates ''all'' forms of healing until it wears off.[[note]]Though Tracer can negate the debuff with ''Recall'' since she travels back in time to before the damage was caused.[[/note]]
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: In "New Blood", she ends up encouraging Cassidy and Pharah to take up their future roles in Overwatch, considering Cassidy being worthy of being among the heroes before Overwatch's collapse ''and'' [[PuttingTheBandBackTogether during its present resurgence]], and assuring to her daughter that her deep desire to serve the world -- whether it be through Helix or Overwatch -- [[SoProudOfYou has her immense approval]].
* YouFightLikeACow: Ana's lines typically mock her opponents. In particular, for one BondOneLiner, she asks: "Who taught you to fight like that?!"

\
An elite combat medic and ex-Talon operative, Baptiste now uses his skills to help those whose lives have been impacted by war.
\
Jean-Baptiste Augustin was one of the 30 million children orphaned by the Omnic Crisis. With limited opportunities and resources, he enlisted in the military. The Caribbean Coalition, a pan-island force formed in response to the Crisis, became his new home. Guided by his innate desire to help people, Baptiste chose the path of a combat medic and served in an elite branch of the Caribbean Coalition’s special ops.
\
After his service was complete, Baptiste struggled to find a demand for his unique skills. He turned to one of the few opportunities open to him: joining the Talon mercenary group, one of the many organizations that were poised to profit off the chaos in the war's aftermath.
\
For the first time ever, Baptiste had a taste of the good life. Talon's missions were easy and paid well, and he put aside some of his earnings to set up a clinic in his hometown. But slowly, his unit's orders escalated in brutality, expanding into assassinations and operations with civilian casualties. Confronted by his team's actions, Baptiste realized he was perpetuating a cycle of violence like the one that had destroyed his own community. He abandoned Talon, disgusted with what he had done and determined to forge a new path for himself.
\
But Talon would not let him go. Baptiste knew too much, and they sent operatives after him to silence him. Agent after agent came for him, including Baptiste's former comrades. To stay under the radar, Baptiste drifted from place to place, aiding in humanitarian efforts around the globe. The few Talon members who managed to track him down were never seen again.
\
Now, Baptiste works toward a better world, healing where he can and fighting when he must. He knows that he cannot undo his past—but that making a difference now is what matters.
\
Thanks to a tip from Sombra, Baptiste was able to locate Cassidy and convince him of his intentions to do good. After working together to evade a Talon assault, Baptiste joined the newly reformed Overwatch.
\
As a Support Hero, Baptiste specializes as a CombatMedic armed with tools to keep his allies alive while eliminating the enemy under fierce conditions.
* '''[[SwissArmyWeapon Biotic Launcher]]''' is his primary weapon, coming in two parts with different magazines for each: an offensive mid-ranged carbine that fires in three-round bursts, and a supporting device that lobs grenades which heal nearby allies (but not himself).
* '''[[HealThyself Regenerative Burst]]''' grants an immense burst of healing over time for himself and nearby allies.
* '''ImmortalityField''' has him toss a floating generator that prevents all nearby allies from dying, just stopping at 10% of their base health, though it can be shot down by enemies.
* His '''[[TrickedOutShoes Exo Boots]]''', when charged up by crouching, allows him to jump much higher than normal.
* With his ultimate, '''[[QuadDamage Amplification Matrix]]''', he summons a rectangular field that doubles the damage and healing effects of most friendly fire (hitscan and projectiles, but not melee or beam-style weapons) that passes through it.
-----
* ArtificialLimbs: His "Bounty Hunter" skin replaces his left arm with a prosthetic one.
* AscendedMeme: His [[LookBehindYou "Behind you! AHH!!"]] voice line from Halloween Terror became a spammable one among players after its release, mostly used by those looking to troll their teammates into thinking they were being shot at. The developers must have taken notice of this, because one of his ''actual'' "behind you" voice lines in the sequel is "Behind you! [[SincerityMode Seriously!]]".
* TheAtoner: Used to work for Talon but now is trying to make up for his crimes by helping out the wounded.
* BaitAndSwitch: His origin video opens up with the same "orphaned by the omnic crisis and had to do what I had to do to survive" backstory as several other characters suggesting a SocialDarwinist philosophy...then his narration rubbishes the idea, establishing him as a Talon defector who feels tremendously guilty about holding onto that point of view.
-->''"At least that's the lie I told myself. The truth is, I had choices, and I made them. But when you think you're a big man, it's hard to admit that you are not a brave one."''
* BecomingTheCostume: His ''[[SpaceOpera Starwatch]]''-based "Bounty Hunter" skin updates much of Baptiste's dialogue, changing his characterization to that of a rugged, space-faring BountyHunter who sees taking down enemies as him filling out his payday.
* BiblicalMotifs: He's themed around baptism. His name Jean-Baptiste also is connected to Saint John the Baptist from the bible (Jean being the French version of "John") and Baptiste also means ''baptism''. Finally, his personality is defined by his desire for redemption. His surname Augustin is in reference to Saint Augustine of Hippo
* BilingualBonus: Trilingual, in fact. He has in-game quotes in both English and Haitian Creole, and it's confirmed in a Q&A that he also speaks French.
* BlueIsHeroic: His armor and weaponry consist mostly of blue with some white and orange highlights (which happen to be Overwatch’s primary colors), a deliberate choice to distance himself from the [[RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver red-and-black uniforms]] of his Talon days.
* CantStayNormal: Baptiste is a survivor of the Omnic crisis and he's only known how to survive. Once the war was over, Baptiste had trouble finding work until he ended up with Talon.
* TheCharmer:
** Some of his cosmetics (like his “Let Me Buy You A Drink” voice line and his “Nice Smile” emote) reveal that Baptiste, on top of being a combat medic, is also quite the flirt.
** Also implied by Mauga in “What You Left Behind”, when he asks if Baptiste has been out breaking hearts since his defection from Talon.
* CombatMedic:
** He has all sorts of gadgets to keep him and his teammates alive, but also has a large offensive focus, either by taking out targets by himself or directly boosting his allies' power to do the same.
** This is also his explicit field of expertise in the lore. Trained under Talon's own Captain Cuerva, Baptiste proved himself to be a skilled shot capable of healing his allies and killing enemies in the heat of battle with quick precision. Cuerva's log reports that the combination of his training and his own natural survival instincts makes him ready to adapt to most situations very fast.
** After the release of his short story “What You Left Behind”, he got a limited epic skin literally called “Combat Medic”, which dons him in full white armor and a translucent blue helmet with a bright blue cross on the front.
* DefectorFromDecadence: He's the first playable character to be a former Talon agent (unless you count former Blackwatch), having joined up when their goals weren't immediately obvious, and grown disgusted with them.
* DifficultButAwesome: Baptiste has loaded but very delicate kit that emphasizes a greater degree of resource/cooldown management than most other supports, and also demands situational awareness for [[CombatMedic whether he should be fighting enemies, keeping his teammates healthy, or helping his teammates fight their enemies]]. As a tradeoff, [[JackOfAllTrades he has a little bit of everything one might want from a support]]: decent firepower, healing and defense in both sustained and burst-y packages (including [[LastChanceHitPoint his infamous]] ''ImmortalityField''), some independent mobility for the positioning game, and a powerful damage/healing-boosting ultimate for utility. Those with the quick thinking, adept awareness, and other technical skills who can take advantage of his entire kit are forces to be reckoned with.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He's been stealing and even killing just to survive for all his life, and signed up with Talon for the paycheck. However, even an orphan who would do anything for money found the rampant corruption he saw among the rank and file as one step too far, so he ran away.
* FriendlyEnemy:
** Baptiste and Sombra became friends during their service with Talon, and even after Baptiste left, Sombra -- [[PlayfulHacker having her eyes pretty much everywhere]] -- apparently checks up on her old friend to see what he's been up to. At the very end of "What You Left Behind", he ends up contacting her to locate one "Dr. Angela Ziegler" as a personal favor, one that "New Blood" shows [[PetTheDog she fulfilled]].
** {{Downplayed|Trope}} with Mauga, who he also became well-acquainted with in Talon. When Baptiste realized he had to defect from the organization, Mauga briefly stood in his path, but ultimately relented and optioned to him the possibility of returning. Four years later (during "What You Left Behind"), the two were suddenly reunited for OneLastJob, but on very uncertain ground -- [[AffablyEvil Mauga's all to happy to invite his old friend back to Talon]], while Baptiste is quite unnerved to see ''[[TheDreaded him]]'' again.
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: He came to realize that growing up amidst the Omnic crisis in a war-torn country was no excuse for being part of Talon atrocities and ignoring their rampant corruption. Stating that he always had a choice and agreeing that he made the wrong one by joining Talon.
* GadgeteerGenius: Much of the tech Baptiste wields comes from all over (some from the Caribbean Coalition and Talon), [[https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/overwatch/t/baptiste-developer-q-a-answers/317030 and it's confirmed that he cobbles it together into what effectively suits him]]. Hell, according to one of the devs, his beta name during his initial testing was actually "Gadget".
* GeniusSweetTooth: Downplayed, as it’s only been mentioned once. Baptiste is a resourceful GadgeteerGenius who has singlehandedly created a device that successfully prevents people from dying... and apparently has a major sweet tooth that not many know about, according to lead writer Michael Chu.
* GoodIsNotSoft: He may be a medic, but he's just as willing to offer you a bullet instead of a bandage. [[ArcWords Your choice]].
* GrenadeLauncher: While ''Biotic Launcher'' primarily fires bullets in three-round bursts, its secondary fire shoots [[TrickBomb healing grenades]].
* HeelFaceTurn: He realized what he was doing was wrong and left Talon to make a better difference.
* HeelRealisation: He defected from Talon after realising how evil they were.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: Talon wants to eliminate him because he has too much knowledge of their shadier operations.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: This was his mantra for survival in the aftermath of the Omnic Crisis, and his justification for joining Talon. [[EveryoneHasStandards He ultimately abandoned it when he realized how corrupt they were]].
-->''"Steal, or starve. Kill, or be killed. You helped your friends and hurt anyone who got in your way."''
* IfYouDieICallYourStuff: In a pre-match line, Baptiste will ask if he can have Hanzo's bow if he dies. Hanzo refuses and promises to break his bow in half with his dying breath.
* ImmortalityField: One of his abilities fits not just in the name, but also in how it works; inside its range, Baptiste and his allies cannot drop below 20% of their overall health. It also prevents death from going out of bounds or being hit by environmental objects, such as the cars in Oasis, though using it this way does not generate ultimate charge.
* JumpedAtTheCall: As illustrated in "New Blood", upon discovering Cassidy in Cairo [[{{Herald}} during his quest to recruit new members to Overwatch]], Baptiste immediately pursues him and the opportunity to join the team (he had previously been in the area searching for Mercy, but she was gone by the time he arrived, and Cassidy being there was just good luck). Cassidy is hesitant at first since he assumes Baptiste is with Talon, but a chance encounter with actual Talon squaddies convinces him that Baptiste is trustworthy and valuable, so he's tied in as a contact.
* KnuckleCracking: His “Come At Me” emote has him cracking his neck before taunting the enemy with a “come get me” hand gesture.
* LastChanceHitPoint: His ''Immortality Field'' is a unique form of team-protecting barrier in that rather than directly blocking incoming damage, it prevents the health of those within its area from being reduced below 20%. However, like all barriers, it can be destroyed by targeting the field generator itself.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: When Baptiste first joined Talon, [[VillainWithGoodPublicity the organization was recognized as a secretive, but otherwise unassuming mercenary group where he would work on officially-sanctioned security missions]], with his status as a lowly {{mook|s}} barring him from knowing or having a voice in its decision-making. Once he started partaking in increasingly questionable missions and realized Talon's terroristic intentions, [[HeelFaceTurn Baptiste]] [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere jumped ship]].
* MeaningfulName: His name Baptiste means "Baptism". Appropriate for a man who realized the weight of his actions and ought to redeem himself. His first name, Jean-Baptiste, is also connected to Saint John the Baptist from the Bible.
* MookFaceTurn: He was once a Talon mook and wore the [[FacelessGoons face concealing helmet]] that is standard in Talon. But as he states in his intro video: "Even harder when you understand that making a living is not enough. You must make a difference. I'm going to fight for a better world."
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Baptiste steadily questioned his place in Talon for a while, but the point where he fully realized he was a frog in the pot was a mission in Monte Cristi to assassinate a cartel leader, receiving orders to sweep out the entire town, no doubt resulting in countless civilian casualties. The moment when he discovered a young girl staring down at him -- mirroring his own experiences in the Omnic Crisis, but this time in the place of the anonymous soldier destroying a village -- [[HeelRealization is when he realized he'd gone too far]] and decided to go AWOL.
* OrnamentalWeapon: His Pirate and Buccaneer skins has a cutlass hanging on his backpack.
* PunchClockVillain: His time in Talon was simply a means to an end after his service in the Caribbean Coalition had concluded, and at that point in time, Talon appeared as merely a well-paying mercenary group where his skills as a combat medic would still be useful. He defected once he realized how villainous the organization turned out to be.
* ReadingsAreOffTheScale: His “Too Powerful!” spray is a reference to the famous “Over 9000” scene from Anime/DragonBallZ, likely due to the fact that he sports a similar looking eyepiece over his left eye.
* RescueRomance: After Cole came to his rescue, it is heavily implied by "As You Are" that Baptiste developed a crush on him.
* ResignationsNotAccepted: Talon doesn't allow its mercenaries to simply "leave", so after Baptiste defected, many attempts were made to capture him dead or alive because HeKnowsTooMuch. The attempts slowed down after Baptiste dealt with all of his pursuers.
* ShirtlessScene: Two of his sprays (“Close Shave” and “Hammock”) depict him without a shirt, showing off his [[{{Hunk}} muscular and battle-hardened physique.]]
* SignificantWardrobeShift: While with Talon, he wore the standard-issue grey, black and red uniform. Upon his defection, he switches to a bright colour scheme, a blue and orange uniform.
* ShoutOut: His "Vampire" skin from the 2019 Halloween Terror event takes obvious inspiration from ComicBook/{{Blade}}.
* SpringJump: His ''Exo Boots'' passive allows him to charge up a large vertical leap by crouching for a few seconds.
* StatusBuff: His ''Amplification Matrix'' increases the damage and healing effects of ally fire that passes through it, which can also stack with any other damage buffs like from Orisa, Mercy, and/or Ana.
* TokenGoodTeammate: He was forced by circumstance to join Talon and become a mercenary. Once he realized their corruption, he left the faction to redeem himself.
* TrickBomb: The ''Biotic Launcher'' can shoot healing grenades.
* TrickedOutShoes: His Exo Boots allow him to [[InASingleBound jump high]].
* UniformityException: Briefly, in his origin trailer, he can be seen with a group of other Talon {{mooks}}, but with his helmet removed so the top half of his head is visible.
* VSign: One of his victory poses.
* WorkoutFanservice: His “Do You Even Lift” spray shoes him lifting weights in nothing but a tank top and a pair of shorts.

\
The youngest daughter of the weapons designer Torbjörn Lindholm, Brigitte was the first of his children to show an interest in mechanical engineering, spending much of her spare time in her father's workshop, learning the trade and honing her skills to design armor and defensive systems, contrasting Torbjörn's (somewhat infamous) reputation as a weapons creator. She was originally expected to follow her father's footsteps, but she changed her plans due to influence of another prominent figure in her life, Reinhardt Wilhelm.
\
Torbjörn's fellow Overwatch agent, close family friend, and Brigitte's godfather, Reinhardt shared tales of heroes and chivalry as she grew up. Following Reinhardt's forced retirement from Overwatch and his decision to continue the fight for justice as a knight-errant, Brigitte asked to join him on his adventures, which he accepted. She served as his squire, responsible for the upkeep of his Crusader armor, as well as taking care of Reinhardt himself, protecting him from his own overenthusiasm even as his body was breaking down from years of combat.
\
Eventually, she realized that serving only as a mechanic wasn't enough and that the best way she could aid Reinhardt was to become a warrior in her own right. While Reinhardt trained her in combat, Brigitte designed her own suit of armor. Now Brigitte fights at Reinhardt's side to protect him, and any others in need as knight and squire journey to make the world a better place, one battle at a time.
\
Brigitte is a tanky Support hero who specializes in defending and supporting nearby allies while keeping foes at bay with her melee weaponry.
* Her primary weapon is a '''[[EpicFlail Rocket Flail]]''', capable of wide swings to strike multiple targets.
* '''Whip Shot''' uses her flail to knock back and damage an enemy at range.
* '''[[HealingFactor Inspire]]''' is a passive that lets her that slowly heals herself and nearby allies as she does damage.
* '''Repair Packs''' can be directly thrown at teammates to heal them, with her able to keep multiple charges in reserve.
* Her '''[[LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe Barrier Shield]]''' provides her personal defense. While it's deployed, she can attack and disrupt enemies with a '''ShieldBash'''.
* Her ultimate, '''[[SuperMode Rally]]''', temporarily buffs Brigitte's maximum health with bonus armor, as well as empowers her ''Barrier Shield'', increasing its size, durability, and crowd control.
-----
* AnimalMotifs: A minor one, but cats. Many of Brigitte's sprays involve or suggest housecats in some way, most of them [[KindheartedCatLover featuring Brigitte playing with them]]. Her shield also bears the same lion symbol Reinhardt uses.
* ArtEvolution: Easily the most noticeable example. In "Dragon Slayer", Brigitte is shown as [[https://i.imgur.com/eTzowJA.png fairly small and scrawny]], with no tattoo in sight. In "Honor and Glory", she's [[https://i.imgur.com/GYZ0UHP.png far more muscular, with a gear tattoo on one shoulder]]. Downplayed, in that it's not clear if this is due to the jump from comic to short, or due to story reasons; it's possible that she built up all that muscle mass training with Reinhardt, as seen in her backstory.
* TheArtefact: Brigitte's kit was originally intended to combine elements of her father (Torbjörn's Armour Packs) and godfather (Reinhardt's melee weapon and shield). After a major rework, however, Torbjörn's Armour Packs were removed from the game entirely, leaving Brigitte's ''Repair Pack'' ability unique to her.
* AscendedExtra: Before being revealed as Hero 27, she had only been mentioned in voicelines, sprays and had minor roles in the Reinhardt-centered comic and short "Dragon Slayer" and "Honor and Glory".
* AscendedMeme: Brigitte was widely considered the progenitor of the infamous "GOATS Meta"[[labelnote:Explanation]]Named after an Overwatch Contenders team that wrecked shop during Season 2's open division, the meta gave rise to extensive use of "3-3 comps" of triple tanks and triple support per team, making heavy use of [[LightningBruiser high sustainability, bursts of mobility, and powerful close-range combat]] (things Brigitte is especially powerful at enabling ''and'' combating) which was found to be nigh-unstoppable even against coordinated teams[[/labelnote]] that plagued high-rank and ''especially'' professional-level play around mid-2018 to mid-2019. To celebrate the start of the 2020 season of Overwatch League, the GOAT Brigitte skin was revealed, immortalizing this connection by giving her spiffy [[{{Pun}} goat]]-themed armor.
* BadassAdorable: She is very cute and also uses her Rocket Flail very well.
* BadassBystander: Brigitte's realm of skills used to be strictly being an engineer and some knowledge in medicine to keep Reinhardt patched up, but she eventually decided that simply standing by wasn't enough and wanted to be directly involved in the fight. Her dialogue with Torbjörn indicates even he's on the fence about her [[JumpedAtTheCall thrusting herself at the chance to be a hero in her own way.]]
-->'''Torbjörn:''' Isn't it enough to be an engineer, Brigitte?\
'''Brigitte:''' I felt like I had to do more.
* BalanceBuff: For a while, Brigitte's ''Rally'' ultimate was a massive team-wide buff, not only increasing Brigitte's own power, but gradually granting nearby allies bonus ArmorPoints, enabling her team to press the attack or stay alive while playing for defense. This was seen as a little too inherently powerful when used in ideal circumstances, yet over time, it actually ended up becoming outdated due to just how slow it is to both build and deploy, so the ultimate was greatly reworked in April 2023 to its current form. Nowadays, ''Rally'' is strictly a SuperMode to Brigitte herself, empowering her health pool as well as her shield and ''Shield Bash'', giving her much more immediate power as a defensive support who can [[LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe block for her teammates]] while repelling foes.
* BarrierWarrior: While plenty of heroes have shields or barriers in this game, Brigitte has the only shield in the game that can be [[ShieldBash directly used to attack enemies]].
* BecomingTheCostume:
** Her "Medic" skin gives her a few additional lines evocative of a modern paramedic (and indirectly, a Medic unit from ''VideoGame/{{Starcraft}}''). Among the lines are her spawning in asking "Please state the nature of your medical emergency!", following up a ''Repair Pack'' with "Sterilizing now!", and quipping an enemy takedown with "Patient prognosis is... [[BlackComedy dead.]]"
** Her "Royal Captain" skin is based off her ''[[SpaceOpera Starwatch]]'' persona, where she is TheDragon to [[GalacticConqueror Galactic Conqueror Sigma]]. Much of her voiceover while using the skin is much more villainous and militaristic, championing the power of the Infinite Empire.
* BigEater: More specifically, [[SweetTooth sweet pastries]], like [[https://78.media.tumblr.com/156c80042e2096aaed49915e42b30491/tumblr_inline_p5553w3dEt1swvf1b_500.png donuts]], [[https://i.imgur.com/tk6qdLk.png?1 cupcakes and pies]], and [[https://playoverwatch.com/en-us/blog/21644315 according to a Q&A]], [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semla semlor]]. In ''Honor and Glory'', she even wears a shirt that reads "I like exercise because I love eating."
** Her "Feast" spray from "Lunar New Year 2019" has her in a table with piled on bowls of food like it's just the appetizer.
* BorrowedCatchphrase:
** She copies Reinhardt's "I will be your shield!", and mirrors "Precision German engineering!" with "Precision ''Swedish'' engineering!"
** She also quotes Torbjörn in various instances, such as "Working as intended!" in the Swedish "Fungerar som den ska" (literally meaning "Working as it should"). Also, one of her respawn lines is her father's "Back to the drawing board" phrase.
* BraidsOfAction: Her "Shiledmaiden" Legendary braids the two usually loose pieces of her hair by her cheeks.
* BrainyBrunette: She has brown hair and is a talented mechanic.
* BreastPlate: Her "Máni" and "Sól" skins emphasize her bust line more than her default skin that's gender neutral.
* BringIt: She gives a simple "Come on" gesture in her "Taunt" emote.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: While Reinhardt is less crazy than most {{Cloudcuckoolander}}s, he tends to slip due to his advancing age. Brigitte's job is to give him reality checks in case he gets in over his head.
* CloseRangeCombatant: Like Reinhardt, she lacks a proper ranged weapon, and most of her supporting capabilities require her to be close-range.
* CombatMedic: Emphasis on "combat." Brigitte came to the conclusion that just patching up wounds after battle isn't enough; it's even better if you can protect people and stop the damage before or immediately it after it happens. On top of having a dedicated healing ability, this factors into gameplay by healing nearby allies every time she damages an enemy.
* TheCutie: There's no doubt that this incredibly cute woman is one of the most sweetest heroes in the game.
* DittoFighter: A downplayed example; Brigitte's kit incorporates elements of both Reinhardt and (pre-rework) Torbjörn. From Reinhardt, she gained PoweredArmor, a HardLight shield, a melee weapon, and rockets that can propel both her and her weapon forward. From Torbjörn, she gained the ability to fortify allies' health with armor packs. All of these abilities, however, function in ways dissimilar to her predecessors to create her own unique kit and combat style.
* EmbarrassingHobby: ''Overwatch 2'' reveals that she enjoys writing poetry, but is quite embarrassed to share hers around with people. She chickens out of sharing potential lyrics with Lúcio, and is less than pleased to have [[PlayfulHacker Sombra]] prying into her poetry folder.
-->'''Brigitte''': What?! I... you had no right!\
'''Sombra''': Don't yell at ''me''. We're both victims here.
* EpicFlail: Her main weapon is a ''Rocket Flail'', limiting her to close-range, though like Reinhardt's ''Rocket Hammer'', [[HerdHittingAttack one swing can hit multiple enemies]]. She also has the option to repel enemies using it.
* FormFittingWardrobe: Played straight with her Máni/Sól skins, which give her boob armor, but otherwise averted in her other skins, which are unisex in form.
* FriendToAllChildren: After Reinhardt saved a town from a ruthless gang in "Dragon Slayer", Brigitte can be seen fixing a little girl's stuffed lion, giving it a suit of armor to match Reinhardt's to the girl's delight.
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: She doesn't wear a helmet to complete her knightly attire. Subverted with "Máni" and "Sól" that give her a pretty spiffy one complete with FluffyFashionFeathers.
* HollywoodGenetics: Torbjörn is blonde. Ingrid, her mother, is blonde. Brigitte has brown hair, and it's the same colour in sprays and flashbacks depicting her as a child. This is possible if she always dyed her hair or if she was adopted.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Brigitte isn't ''small'' by any means. In fact, she's the third-tallest girl in the roster (next to Zarya and Junker Queen). It's just that an above-average sized woman is still tiny when standing next to Reinhardt. Even when he's out of his armor, she barely reaches his shoulder.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Reinhardt is in his sixties, while Brigitte is decades younger than him. Justified as she is Reinhardt’s goddaughter.
* ItRunsInTheFamily: As one of Torbjörn's kids, she has inherited her father's mechanic skills.
* JeanneDArchetype: Has a few elements of this. Brigitte is a brave young lady inspired by the chivalry of the Crusaders who thrusts herself into the heat of battle after feeling like she's been standing on the sidelines for too long and has the most traditional knighthood aesthetic. Her ultimate is even just a RousingSpeech weaponized to empower and inspire her teammates.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Though she seemed content with being an engineer for a good duration of her life, Brigitte always had the inner need to truly throw herself into adventure and took her first step when she agreed to be Reinhardt's travel companion. As of ''Overwatch 2'', she's more or less or an Overwatch agent who fights alongside the veterans on their level.
* KindheartedCatLover: Brigitte's family's had a few cats, [[https://i.imgur.com/aDNQQyK.jpg and she's]] [[https://i.imgur.com/GeYrDuJ.jpg very fond]] [[https://i.imgur.com/SAIdTow.jpg of them]], [[https://i.imgur.com/DjyAqgP.jpg to the]] [[https://i.imgur.com/I6jyvH8.png point where]] [[AnimalMotifs housecats are almost her minor motif]]. The archives event ends up giving her an emote hugging a huge feline named Mitzi. [[note]] The name is found on one of her new sprays, also from the vent.[[/note]]
* KnightInShiningArmor: Patterned herself after Reinhardt, utilizing high-tech medieval armor and weapons. She's also heroic and focuses on protecting her allies more than fighting or killing.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: She heavily draws inspiration from Reinhardt, is good friends with both Pharah and Mercy, and is adorably awkward when greeting Tracer towards the end of "Zero Hour".
* {{Knockback}}: Her ''Shield Bash'' knocks enemies away, while her ''Whip Shot'' can push enemies away at a long range. Given how fast it is, it can be used to [[RingOut knock people off maps]] à la Lúcio, and she even has a few voice lines for doing so.
* LamePunReaction: In the "Zero Hour" cinematic.
-->'''Tracer:''' Everyone, this is Mei!\
'''Reinhardt:''' ''ICE'' to meet you!\
''[Brigitte groans and rolls her eyes]''
* LifeDrain: Her Inspire ability allows her to heal while attacking.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: She carries a ''Barrier Shield'', comparable to Reinhardt's ''Barrier Field''. It's only as wide as herself and has 300 HP instead of Reinhardt's 1200, but otherwise functions identically, stopping damage and protecting anything immediately behind her when it's up. Unlike Reinhardt, she can also use it to [[ShieldBash smack people]], and ''[[SuperMode Rally]]'' beefs it up to be physically larger (allowing her to protect more of her team) as well as far sturdier with 750 maximum HP.
* MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter: She's Torbjörn's daughter and a [[WrenchWench mechanic]] like him.
* NiceGirl: She's sweet, positive, and a huge team player, always willing to drop compliments to her comrades and offer encouraging words to those she's patching up in a scuffle.
* NoOSHACompliance: Her origin trailer shows her welding a piece of her armor while she's wearing it, and without any sort of protective eyewear.
* ThePaladin: Brigitte's play-style is obviously meant to invoke this trope with her fusion of defensive and supporting capabilities. In a bit of internal cross-referencing, her design resembles a more-futuristic ''VideoGame/DiabloIII'' Crusader, and she even borrows their ShieldBash ability, also found in ''VideoGame/DiabloII'' Paladins.
* OnlySaneMan: Is more level-headed that Reinhardt and attempts to keep him grounded. When Reinhardt receives Winston's call, she tries to talk him down for his own safety. [[ForGreatJustice He isn't having any of it]].
* PoweredArmor: Wears a custom, scaled-down version of Reinhardt's Crusader armor.
* RocketPoweredWeapon: Similar to how Reinhardt uses a rocket-powered hammer, Brigitte uses a rocket-powered [[EpicFlail flail]].
* ShieldBash: One of her abilities in the form of a short dash as her shield's up.
* SkillGateCharacters: She is listed as a "One-Star" Hero[[note]]Stars are rough indicators of how difficult a character is to use at a basic level, on a scale between one and three.[[/note]], and doesn't require much aim. She has also been stated by the devs to be a direct counter to DifficultButAwesome flankers such as Genji and Tracer, with her kit allowing her to counter them more easily than other characters are able to.
* TheSquire: With Reinhardt being the embodiment of a knight in modern times, Brigitte acts as his squire, at Reinhardt's request.
* SuperMode: ''Rally'' grants Brigitte several buffs to make her into an even beefier defensive support than usual, increasing her maximum health with ArmorPoints as well as strongly empowering her shield, giving it more hit points, increasing its size, and in turn empowering her ''ShieldBash'' to hit multiple targets ''and'' stun them instead of merely inflicting {{Knockback}}.
* TattooAsCharacterType: She has a tattoo of gears on her left shoulder, similar to Torbjörn's. She is Reinhardt's mechanic and eventual squire in training.
* TinyGuyHugeGirl: Another non-romantic example with her father: Brigitte didn't inherit her father's...[[OurDwarvesAreDifferent diminutive stature.]] Her exact height is unspecified, but in team victory screens it can be seen that she's somewhat taller than Pharah (5'11") and somewhat shorter than Zarya (6'5").
* TomboyishPonytail: Her default hairstyle is her long hair in a ponytail with two loose pieces that hang past her cheeks, befitting for an ActionGirl who isn't afraid to be hands on with her own weaponry.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Brigitte is a young mechanic who fashions herself around images of knighthood with her role model being no other than the muscle-bound Reinhardt but she's also [[KindheartedCatLover a massive cat lover]] and has a talent for knitting according to her Winter Wonderland 2019 spray.
* UglyGuysHotDaughter: She looks significantly more beautiful than her father, Torbjörn.
* WholeCostumeReference: Brigitte's "Ironclad" skin aesthetically recreates Torbjörn's default outfit, complete with his welding mask.
* WrenchWench: She serves as Reinhardt's mechanic and patches up his armor before he goes off fighting the Dragons gang. Some of her skins (like Ironclad) play this up in her appearance more than others.
* YouthfulFreckles: She has these, although they're more obvious in the comics than in the animated short.

!!!'''Species:''' Human\
'''Age:''' 18\
'''Birthday:''' December 21st\
'''Occupation:''' Guardian\
'''Base of Operations:''' Runasapi, Peru\
'''Affiliation:''' Inti Warriors

->''"I'' will ''make up for what I've done, for I am Illari, and I am the last Child of the Sun."''

->Voiced by: Andre Cisneros (English and Latin American Spanish)

As the last of the Inti Warriors, Illari is a vessel for the power of the sun. She’ll do anything to make up for her past.
\
As a child, Illari grew up idolizing the Inti Warriors, known to the people of Peru as "the Children of the Sun". These warriors were able to draw solar power into themselves to fight, heal, and protect those in need. She applied to join them and went through rigorous training until the day came when she was finally ready to have the Sun's power transferred into her.
\
However, moments before her transformation was about to reach its completion, something went horribly wrong. An immense pulse of solar power burst forth from where Illari stood, resulting in a massive explosion. When she came to, the entire facility was destroyed, and there were no survivors. She had somehow unleashed the immense power of the Sun, and accidentally killed everyone present at the ceremony - her fellow warriors included. Now, as the last Child of the Sun, Illari fights for both atonement and to carry on the will of her fallen comrades into the future.
\
Illari is a versatile Support, boasting a variety of options which make her effective at both healing, moving, and dealing damage at all ranges.
* Illari wields the ''[[HealingShiv Solar Rifle]]'', which features two firing modes that each come with energy meters that charge automatically over time: left-clicking fires long-range laser beams that consume charge to deal damage, while right-clicking consumes energy to fire a stream of light that heals allies.
* She can place down a ''Healing Pylon'', a turret-like device that automatically heals allies one at a time.
* Her ''[[DoubleJump Outburst]]'' allows her to launch herself in the direction she's facing, additionally producing an explosion that repels nearby enemies.
* Her ultimate ability is ''[[ThePowerOfTheSun Captive Sun]]'': after a brief charging period in which she can hover in the air, her next shot fires a massive ball of solar energy that damages, slows, and marks enemies. Marked enemies that take significant damage explode with further damage, which can trigger other nearby marks.
----
* AchillesHeel: Illari's ''Healing Pylon'' is her most reliable and consistent method of restoring allies' health - without it, she has to rely on her alternate fire's healing beam, which has a very finite amount of energy and must be recharged once it gets used up. Furthermore, the pylon has a long cooldown once its destroyed. In other words, once her pylon is out of the picture, Illari's contribution to her squad's healing is massively impaired.
* BilingualBonus: She's the first hero in the game whose voice lines are in three different languages, speaking English, Spanish, and Quechua.
* ChargedAttack: Her ''Solar Rifle'''s primary fire deals damage, but pulling the trigger consumes solar energy as part of its own meter (the rifle's healing stream is based off its own meter that behaves differently). Each shot deals different amounts of damage depending on the amount of energy consumed, rewarding the patient with significantly more powerful singular bursts of damage.
* CombatMedic: She has potent healing power with her ''Solar Rifle''[='=]s secondary fire alongside a handy ''Healing Pylon''. At the same time, her ''Solar Rifle''[='=]s damage makes her a mean long-range threat, and ''Captive Sun'' is a destructive nuke that's one of the single most deadly anti-huddling abilities in the game.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Subverted; much like Moira, Illari is good at damage and has powerful healing potential, but her regular abilities provide no other utility for her team, and can't debuff the other team. The only exception is her HerdHittingAttack ultimate.
* DoubleJump: ''Outburst'' serves as a launching ability that can be used to boost her to whatever direction she's facing, including up. Unlike Genji's ''Cyber-Agility'' or Hanzo's ''Lunge'', Illari's ''Outburst'' also has an offensive aspect in that using it [[{{Knockback}} knocks enemies away from her]], making it her sole bit of non-damage/healing utility.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: She has a yellowish glowing ring around the iris.
* HealingShiv: They interact separately, but her ''Solar Rifle'' is able to fire deadly sun lasers ''and'' release a healing stream of solar power. Meanwhile, ''Healing Pylon'' is functionally a SentryGun but focuses on healing allies rather than shooting enemies.
* HerdHittingAttack: ''Captive Sun'' conjures a massive fireball that not only has a sizeable explosion radius, but it also marks enemies and primes them to [[StuffBlowingUp explode further]] if they take too much damage, with the residual explosions triggering other marks. It's practically designed to make the enemy team scatter lest they get completely blown up.
* KnightInSourArmor: Ironically for having such [[ThePowerOfTheSun bright and sunny motifs]], Illari is one of the most somber characters in the cast, owing to her dark past. She still fights on the side of the righteous, but much of her interactions with the cast is sullen and serious, and she's more than a little bit of a loner who struggles with forming attachments with others.
* LastOfHerKind: She was poised to be the greatest of the Inti Warriors, but ultimately became the last one after her augmentation ceremony [[GoneHorriblyWrong went horribly wrong]], accidentally decimating her kin from the sheer force of solar power running through her. The absence of brethren weighs heavily on Illari as she's unable to find guidance necessary to lead her, leaving her to find her path in the world on her lonesome.
* MeaningfulName: Tying into her sun motifs, "Illari" is an Incan name meaning "sunrise".
* MixAndMatchWeapon: Her ''Solar Rifle'' resembles a stylized macuahuitl, a type of large, bladed club used by old Mesoamerican civilizations, except hers [[BifurcatedWeapon splits in half]] and fires [[ThePowerOfTheSun various kinds of light blasts]]. Illari's QuickMelee animation has her swinging the entire "rifle" into her opponent's face, evoking its "original" use.
* MyGreatestFailure: The day she developed her [[ThePowerOfTheSun sun powers]] was ironically the most traumatic event of her life, as upon receiving them, she accidentally produced a massive explosion that killed her fellow Inti Warriors, leaving her the LastOfHerKind. Many of her in-game interactions stress that her desire to heal and protect her teammates is to prevent another tragedy if she can help it.
* NoPlansNoPrototypeNoBackup: It's strongly implied that the secrets of the Inti Warriors and their solar-powered technology died with them after their sudden destruction. In one interaction, Torbjörn inquires if he can read the blueprints of Illari's healing pylon, and she laments that it and countless other files were wiped out
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: If her teammates are all killed, she can solemnly remark that she doesn't want to be left alone again.
* PowerIncontinence: Illari's initiation into the Inti Warriors involved her being imbued with solar threading that would allow her to control the sun's powers, but Illari ended up being ''so'' powerful that she ended up accidentally unleashing a massive blast of energy that decimated her surroundings and the people in it, leaving her the LastOfHerKind. To this day, she's still training on how to control said powers without vaporizing everyone she loves.
* ThePowerOfTheSun: Illari has been augmented with solar threading, which allows her to harness the power of the sun itself in combat. Her biggest use of this comes with ''Captive Sun'', which allows her to create a massive fireball that [[HavingABlast turns every enemy into walking explodium]].
* SentryGun: Her ''Healing Pylon'' is a ''[[HealingShiv benevolent]]'' [[HealingShiv example]]: when placed down, it will automatically and continuously heal allies within its range one at a time, prioritizing the hero with the current lowest health percentage. It can be stuck onto terrain (including artificial terrain like Mei's ''Ice Wall'') and it remains on location indefinitely, but it can also be shot down and destroyed by enemies, and if it's destroyed, it gets put on a longer cooldown than if Illari just safely recalls it manually.
* SignificantBirthDate: Her birthday, December 21st, is the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, which includes her home country of Peru. The summer solstice is the day of the year with the most amount of daylight, befitting Illari's connections to the sun.
* TraumaButton: Given her tragic past with them, it's not that surprising Illari doesn't respond kindly to mentions about the Inti Warriors, and inquiring her about it is a surefire way to get her in a very bad mood.
-->'''Echo:''' I have questions about Inti fighting styles.\
'''Illari:''' I'm not qualified to answer them.\
'''Echo:''' [[InnocentlyInsensitive The records shows you're a prodigy! Perhaps you're not giving yourself enough credit]].\
'''Illari:''' Keep reading those records. You'll see how much credit I deserve.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: Illari's default costume has the red and white color scheme as the Peruvian flag.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Her sullen, world-weary personality and sophisticated, ceremonial presentation suggests someone that's been active for many years on the battlefield. It turns out that according to the official website, she's only 18, making her the youngest human hero in the game (and third-youngest hero if you count Orisa and Wrecking Ball, with D.Va being 21 by the time of ''Overwatch 2'').

[[caption-width-right:350:''"I'll find my own path."'']]
!!!'''Species:''' Human\
'''Age:''' 21\
'''Birthday:''' [[UsefulNotes/{{Tanabata}} July 7th]]\
'''Occupation:''' Vigilante, Shrine Caretaker\
'''Base of Operations:''' Kanezaka, Japan\
'''Affiliation:''' Yamagami Blades, Yokai Gang\
'''Appearances (shorts):''' "Kiriko Origin Story" "Kiriko"

->''"For generations, my family has served and protected our city by following traditional paths. Me? I made my own."''

->Voiced by: Creator/SallyAmaki (English), Creator/FairouzAi (Japanese), Sara Lityńska (Polish), Ha-ru Kim (Korean), Lia Mello (Brazilian Portuguese)

For generations, the Yamagami family were defenders of Kanezaka who were closely tied to the Fox Spirit, and Kiriko was trained by her mother and grandmother to become their successor while training alongside Genji and Hanzo Shimada. While her grandmother taught her traditional healing arts and her mother trained her in combat, Kiriko decided to use both to forge her own path.
\
Kiriko is a high-mobility "battle healer" Support who thrives in the thick of the action, able to heal and protect her team while taking on fast skirmishes on her own.
* Her primary fire has her throw out '''[[PaperTalisman Healing Ofuda]]''', which are slow but automatically home in on allies to heal them.
* Her secondary fire has her throw out '''[[FlechetteStorm Kunai]]''', which normally deal minor damage to enemies, but are very fast and deal bonus damage on critical hits.
* '''[[FlashStep Swift Step]]''' allows Kiriko to teleport right next to an ally. The ability has a long range and can even be used through walls.
* '''[[TrickBomb Protection Suzu]]''' is a bell that Kiriko can throw out to briefly make herself and allies invulnerable to damage, as well as cleansed of debuffs and crowd control.
* '''[[LeParkour Wall Climb]]''' is a passive that allows her to quickly climb up terrain.
* Her ultimate, '''[[SummonMagic Kitsune Rush]]''', sends out a mystical fox spirit who leaves behind a trail that buffs herself and allies with increased movement, reload, and attack speed, as well as reduced ability cooldowns.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''iri'''k'''o '''K'''amori.
* AnimalEaredHeadband: Keeping in with the [[AsianFoxSpirit kitsune]] motif, she wears a headband with fox ears. It even comes with a stylized render of "狐" kanji, which means "fox/kitsune".
* AsianFoxSpirit: She's aided by a kitsune spirit tied to her home village of Kanezaka, which is depicted in a similar fashion as the dragon spirits of the Shimada brothers. She summons it for her ultimate, leaving behind a flourishing trail of energy to massively boost her team's collective speed.
* BadassAdorable: Cute, chipper, compassionate, evidently gets by on a healthy supply of donuts, ''and'' able to deliver a smashing beatdown. She's dangerous in gameplay even compared to some other supports thanks to her kunai, and her cinematic shows her putting up an exceptional fight against several armed thugs ''without'' her kitsune guiding her.
* BadassFamily: Kiriko's mother, Asa Yamagami, was a ninja who not only taught her how to fight, but she was even appointed the swordmaster of the Shimada clan and taught both Genji and Hanzo the art of the blade. She and her husband Toshiro also ran the Yamagami Blades smithy in developing weapons, whose craft was apparently so coveted that a rival clan felt the need to abduct Toshiro to produce blades exclusively for them.
* BecomingTheCostume:
** Her "Witch" skin gives her plenty of more lines that reference the supernatural, magics, and [[FortuneTeller fortune-telling]], down to referring to her healing talismans as UsefulNotes/TarotCards instead. During "Junkenstein's Revenge: Wrath of the Bride", her friendly ultimate callout becomes "Enter the spirit world!"
** Kiriko's "Amaterasu" skin comes with lines pertaining to the sun, light and overall Japanese mythology, along with a few that give the impression of a motherly protector goddess. While its default golden appearance is a direct representation of the namesake deity, it can be customized to represent Amaterasu's fellow sibling gods: a white variant for Tsukuyomi (the god of the moon), and a purple one for Susano'o (the god of storms). Her intro line changes to "I'll light my own path!", and her default intro animation changes from her teleporting into view to being surrounded by her ofuda in a prayer stance. Both the default highlight intro and a brand new one introduced in the same season pass as the skin also make use of different unfolding animations for her crown. Her fox spirit and the torii gates used in her Ultimate are also slightly tweaked as well.
* BilingualBonus: Like Genji and Hanzo, she peppers some of her dialogue with Japanese. Her cinematic also shows her using [[UsefulNotes/SignedLanguage Japanese Sign Language]] to communicate with a deaf girl.
* ChildOfTwoWorlds: Downplayed, but as her origin story shows, Kiriko is heavily influenced by her grandma and mother, who both wanted her to follow in their footsteps. Her spiritual grandmother wanted Kiriko to dedicate herself to the fox spirit, to be a healer. While her mother, a pragmatic fighter, wanted Kiriko to dedicate herself to the way of the blade. In the end Kiriko chose both, to heal the sick and injured while delivering much deserved face kickings to those who would prey on the weak, a CombatMedic fully dedicated to both jobs.
* CombatMedic: A Support with strong healing and general utility options, but is also nasty with her kunai, [[CriticalHitClass which are designed to be especially lethal while landing critical hits]]. Perhaps more than other supports with offensive power, she wants to rush into and remain in the thick of battle rather than stay in the back line, remaining relevant through as much in-your-face kill pressure as healing.
* CriticalHitClass: Kiriko's raw damage is quite low, but she has a significantly higher damage multiplier from landing headshots (or other critical hits) than other heroes. If she sees an enemy, she'll ''really'' want to AttackItsWeakPoint.
* CuteWitch: Her skin from Halloween 2022 is a Witch skin. Compared to Mercy's it highlights her youth and exuberance rather than Mercy's making her look evil and sexy. It's her skin during the event as well, with story appropriate voicelines to boot.
* DeclarationOfProtection: In the "Kiriko" animated short, she tells the Hashimoto thugs she beat up to tell their boss that Kanezaka is under ''her'' protection and she won't suffer any further transgressions.
* DevelopersForesight: ''Protection Suzu'' is meant to be a support ability you use on your allies, but up until the August 2023 patch, it also produced a ''very tiny'' amount of knockback on nearby enemies, meaning it was technically possible to use it to [[RingOut knock enemies off maps]]. Blizzard accounted for this, and thus the ability has a proper elimination icon in the kill feed.
* DeviousDaggers: Kiriko wields kunai, throwing knives fitting with her ninja abilities.
* DisappearedDad: Her father was abducted several years ago by the rivalling Hashimoto clan, forced to forge blades just for them. While the family is able to make occasional correspondence with him -- he was even able to send Kiriko a knife as a gift -- his absence from their lives is palpable.
* DualWielding: Played with in gameplay, where she carries offensive kunai in one hand and her healing ofuda in the other. Played more straight in her cinematic, where she fights gripping a kunai in each hand.
* EasterEgg: She has a special voiceline during setup if she's on a team with both Genji and Hanzo:
-->"''My mother trained half our team. I'll sign the rest of you up for lessons.''"
* FlashStep: ''Swift Step'' is Kiriko's most dynamic form of mobility, allowing her to near-instantly teleport to an ally's side to aid them in battle (or help make your healing reach them faster). Unlike Reaper's ''Shadow Step'' or Moira's ''Fade'', this only works when targeted at your allies and will likely be seldom used for escapes, but it has a long range and can be targeted ''through walls''.
* FlechetteStorm: Her main offensive weapon are [[StockNinjaWeaponry kunai]], which she throws out on the regular.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Prior to her official reveal in September 2022, she was hinted during the release of the Kanezaka map in January 2021, which was accompanied with [[https://playoverwatch.com/en-us/news/23608156/ a short story in the form of a letter]] by one Asa Yamagami, her mother. Kiriko is directly mentioned (though not named), as is the family's history with the Shimada and Hashimoto families, and their connection to their local [[AsianFoxSpirit fox spirit]].
** Said letter also mentioned that there have been reports of a vigilante group fighting back against the Hashimoto clan, with the Kanezaka map's accompanying Kanezaka Challenge also offering [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/overwatch_gamepedia/images/7/73/Y%C5%8DkaiSpray.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20210116120034 a "Yōkai" spray which appears to be their graffiti tag]]. Come Kiriko's "Origin Story" video, we would finally see this Yōkai gang in person, with Kiriko being one of its members.
** During the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aB-H8QFXA0 Overwatch 2 free-to-play announcement trailer]], Kiriko's fox spirit was given a highlight without context, [[EarlyBirdCameo teasing the hero herself coming soon]].
* GagHaircut: Discussed in a pre-battle intro with Genji, where she asks him if he remembers having a bowl haircut. Genji replies that it was because he got it in response to ''her'' having one and wanting to not let her be alone; when Kiriko feigns ignorance, Genji reveals he still has the pictures to prove it.
* GenderFlip: Her "Amaterasu" skin by default isn't one, but one of its custom options make her one of Susano'o, Amaterasu's brother and the god of storms.
* GamerChick: Joined Genji a lot in the Hanamura aracde when they were younger.
* GeoEffects: What ''Kitsune Rush'' ultimately grants -- by summoning the fox spirit, Kiriko creates a large path marked by glowing stones and torii gates that greatly enhances the movement, firing, and cooldown speed of her and her team.
* GlassCannon: Has strong utility and especially damage for a Support, but like many other Supports, she's quite squishy and has very little in the way of healing herself aside from passive RegeneratingHealth and her ''Suzu''. Her intended playstyle also heavily involves in her jumping in aggressively with ''Swift Step'', so she better land her damage and end her skirmishes quickly, or she's toast.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Whenever she calls for the full strength of her fox spirit, her eyes start glowing bright blue. During her titular short, her neighbors also develop the same glowing eyes as they too become empowered by the kitsune rush. Her eyes in her "Amaterasu" skin also glow by default.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She absolutely is soft and kindhearted out of the action, but when ''in'' the action, she absolutely means business. During her cinematic, her first move against a cadre of Hashimoto goons is to chuck a kunai right between their leader's eyes -- had he not been wearing a thick mask, Kiriko's methods would be much messier.
* GratuitousNinja: As if the Shimada brothers didn't already fill in the game's ninja quota, Kiriko is another Japanese ninja, albeit one much more focused on support and utility rather than dealing damage ([[CombatMedic though she has plenty of that]]).
* HandSeals: As can be seen her profile picture, though for the most part she is only shown in-universe to do it when using her ult to summon the Kitsune spirit.
* LeParkour: Like Genji and Hanzo, she has the ability to quickly scramble up walls for higher ground.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: [[DownplayedTrope More like cousins once-removed]], but as Kiriko's mother trained Hanzo and Genji in swordsmanship, Kiriko grew up alongside the two, and they view her akin to a little sister or niece. You can certainly see the familial bond she shares with the Shimada brothers in a lot of their interactions, and while there may be some bitter tension between the brothers, there is a lot more warmth and playfulness in their interactions with her, even from Hanzo.
** In particular, she's noted to be a lot closer to Genji; both spent a lot of time troublemaking and playing in the Hanamura arcade, and Genji often provided her with sweets when she visited the Shimada residence. She even refers to Genji by his [[FirstNameBasis first name]] more than she does with Hanzo, and playfully ribs him like a little sister like sharing stories of how he messed up during training when they were younger, much to his chagrin and to the delight of his fellow Overwatch members.
---> '''Kiriko:''' Swift as the wind, huh, Genji?\
'''Genji:''' Even swifter, thanks to you.
* {{Miko}}: Kiriko's greatly evocative of the archetype. Visually, her outfit is a mix of a traditional shrine priestess and futuristic streetwear, and much of her arsenal is technologically-tinged variants of Shinto charms like {{Paper Talisman}}s and Suzu bells. She's also very much tied to tradition and her family's ancestral line of work, retaining a more spiritual edge than when compared to the Shimada brothers.
* MovesetClone: ''Greatly'' {{downplayed|Trope}}, but Kiriko's designers stated that she was meant to mechanically evoke Genji, the intent being that she'd be a gateway Support hero to those who prefer play him and other DPS heroes (at the time, Genji was the most-played hero in the game by a significant margin). While they don't share any exact same moves (aside from the ''Wall Climb'' passive, which is shared with Hanzo), Kiriko is still played as a ninja who alternates between whittling down enemies with sharp objects before diving in for the finishing blow, though her raw damage is toned down, with [[CombatMedic supportive power instead as the main meat of her kit]].
* NeighbourhoodFriendlyGangsters: While her exact role in the gang, be it as just member or the actual leader, is unknown, her origin animation shows that she is a part of the Yokai Gang, a group of Yokai themed youths who protect Kanezaka and make life as difficult for the Hashimoto clan as they can. This ends up being a sticking point between her and Pharah, despite being very friendly most of the time a certain voiceline shows Pharah does not approve of Kiriko's gang activities.
* NiceGirl: She has moments of playful sass, but Kiriko is ultimately a kindhearted spirit who generally gets along with everyone, even [[TheFriendNobodyLikes Junkrat]] and [[TheQuietOne Roadhog]].
* {{Ninja}}: Japanese, stealthy, swift, armed with [[StockNinjaWeaponry kunai]] and other trinkets, and very effective at combat. Her gameplay -- by design -- is similar to Genji in terms of [[FragileSpeedster being nimble while also greatly involved in the fray]], but in a much more spiritually-themed CombatMedic playstyle.
* NoSell: ''Protection Suzu'' allows her to create a very brief, but powerful splash that makes herself and allies invulnerable to damage, as well as freed from any stuns or other crowd control[[note]]Some exceptions to this are instances where the crowd control is so brief any effects would be negligible (such as the pull of Roadhog's ''Chain Hook'') or those that by design continuously enforce their effects (such as Zarya's ''Graviton Surge'' or Reinhardt's ''Charge'')[[/note]]. The effect lasts less than a second (0.75 seconds, to be specific -- compare this to Zarya's 2-second barriers), so it requires precision timing to use, but it may be all you need to turn the tide of a battle.
** In addition, the suzu can also dispel most negative status effects, whether they may be damage over time ones (Ash's dynamite fire, Widowmaker's mine) or more esoteric abilities (Sombra's hacking, Zenyatta's discord orbs). ''Swift Step'' also provides a similar cleaning effect for Kiriko herself when she uses it while debuffed.
* NomDeMom: To protect Kiriko from the Hashimoto Clan after they kidnapped her husband, Kiriko's mother Asa changed her daughter's surname to Kamori, Asa's maiden name, to hide her connection to Toshiro and had Kiriko move with her grandmother.
* NotEvenBotheringWithTheAccent: Kiriko grew up and is based in Japan, but unlike Genji and Hanzo, she speaks with an American English accent. Unlike Lúcio's situation, her English VA (Sally Amaki) is fluent in both of her character's languages (English and Japanese), she just happens to naturally speak her English in the same accent.
* PaintedOnPants: As part of her modern miko/ninja aesthetic, she wears skintight athleisure pants. They're usually covered up by her long jacket, but her aptly named "Athleisure" skin shows them off well.
* PaperTalisman: Her ''Healing Ofuda'' is her primary healing option, and helpfully home in on allies to make the supporting job easier.
* PreAsskickingOneLiner: During ''Kiriko'', shortly as [[StealthHiBye she teleports into]] a hallway occupied by several Hashimoto thugs: "I'm going to kick every one of you in the face."
-->'''[[CaptionHumor ボッコボコタイム / FACE KICKING TIME]]'''
* PromotedToPlayable: During early development, Kiriko was intended to be a boss unit in a ninja faction for [=PvE=] before turning into a playable hero.
* RedGreenContrast: Kiriko's primary color in her default outfit is red, her fox spirit is green with ''Kitsune Rush'''s effects being green as well.
* RememberTheNewGuy: Her introduction to the game revealed she used to be formerly close to Genji and Hanzo, having trained together in swordsmanship by her mother, seen by the two as an honorary niece of sorts.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Due to the way it's designed, ''Swift Step'' requires the player have decent map knowledge and/or coordination with their team members, since Kiriko players can tell where their teammates are relative to them, not where actually they are among the map geometry. Without these skills, you may end up in an awkward situation of [[DynamicEntry teleporting offensively towards an ally]] only to find out they're in the process of being caught out by the enemy team in a chokepoint.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Her [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRH1GXCYXT4&ab_channel=WarpedOverwatch "Amaterasu" skin]] forgoes her futuristic streetwear/shrine maiden gear for a more elaborately dressed traditional Japanese aesthetic, complete with hair decorations, make-up and kimono.
* SignificantBirthDate: Her birthday, July 7th, is the first day of UsefulNotes/{{Tanabata}}.
* TokenWizard: She is the first character whose abilities are explicitly magical in nature, although they retroactively imply the abilities of the Shimada and Zenyatta's are as mystical as they initially appeared.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Donuts. In her namesake short, she gets chewed out by her mother once she realizes [[SweetTooth she eats them for dinner]]. Kiriko even uses donuts as an analogy for the Fox Spirit and her protective resolve.
* WeaksauceWeakness: ''Kitsune Rush'' travels in a straight line for a pretty long maximum distance, but stops dead in its tracks once it hits any large wall. As it turns out, a Mei's ''Ice Wall'' and even ''Mei herself'' while using ''Cryo-Freeze'' counts as a wall, even if she's on your own team, so you'd better keep some distance.
* WindIsGreen: ''Kitsune Rush'''s effect is green and envelopes Kiriko and her teammates in wind, increasing their speed.
* WorkingClassHero: While her family [[BadassFamily does have some badass credentials to their name]], [[RetiredBadass they're ultimately past their prime]] and live a mostly quiet life in Kanezaka, a small town in the shadow of Hanamura that primarily gets by on tourism. Unlike the Shimadas who are burdened by their once-great criminal empire, Kiriko is driven by the desire to protect her family and hometown, striking it out as a local vigilante to repel the Hashimoto clan.

An ex-employee of the Vishkar Corporation, Niran Pruksamanee was born into a wealthy family in Thailand and grew up admiring the large gardens of his home. To provide structure in his life and to help him learn discipline, his parents sent him to the prestigious Vishkar Academy, where he became acquainted with one of their future finest employees, Satya "Symmetra" Vaswani.
\
While at Vishkar, Niran learned how to utilize their hard light technology, but his eccentric and carefree nature often clashed with the institute's rigid rulesets and inclinations towards perfectionism. He used his family's wealth during his off-time from Vishkar to travel the world, adventuring through its beautiful natural landscapes. In witnessing its beauty, he also witnessed the devastation that had been wrought upon it, and came to the conclusion that the world needed help.
\
Putting his own spin on the technology he had been given, his experiments ended up creating an entirely new form of energy that blended science and nature together - biolight. Unfortunately for Niran, Vishkar sought to profit off of his creation, claiming that as he utilized ''their'' technology to make it, it belonged to them and them alone. Dissatisfied with this decision and determined to use his newfound discovery to heal the world, Niran fled the academy and became a wanted man with a large bounty on his head placed by Vishkar. He now continues his worldly travels as a free spirit, using his biolight to help wherever he can.
\
Lifeweaver is a Support hero loaded with incredible utility, able to heal allies, sculpt terrain, and reposition himself and his team in unorthodox ways.
* His primary fire, '''[[PetalPower Healing Blossom]]''', launches biolight buds that heal targeted allies, and can be charged to give a greater burst of healing.
* His alternate fire -- equipped as a swappable sidearm -- is '''[[FlechetteStorm Thorn Volley]]''', which fires a stream of rapid-fire projectiles to deal damage.
* His secondary fire, '''[[FloatingPlatforms Petal Platform]]''', creates a biolight platform on the ground that raises into the air once anyone steps on it.
* '''[[VideoGameDashing Rejuvenating Dash]]''' makes Lifeweaver dash a short distance forward, healing himself in the process.
* '''[[MindOverMatter Life Grip]]''' has Lifeweaver shielding and healing an ally before quickly pulling them towards his position, allowing him to near-instantly rescue them from danger.
* Lifeweaver's ultimate ability, '''[[GreenThumb Tree of Life]]''', summons a massive biolight tree that heals allies upon sprouting and continues healing nearby allies as it stands. It also blocks enemy fire, but can be eventually shot down and destroyed by enemies.
----
* BequeathedPower: For a very short period (before his first balance change), Lifeweaver had a passive, ''Parting Gift'', where upon dying, he'd leave behind a health pickup that could be used by an ally ''or'' an enemy. The concept was that it'd implicitly force Lifeweaver to strategize where among the team he should position should the enemy suddenly get the drop on him, but it was quickly removed as to consolidate his healing power and utility elsewhere in more practical ways.
* BilingualBonus: He has voice lines in both English and his native Thai.
* BrilliantButLazy: Incredibly intelligent and thoughtful, but has always been a slacker who chronically resists structure no matter how hard it's imposed onto him. When he was young, he was often reprimanded by teachers for doing assignments "incorrectly" by [[BotheringByTheBook solving problems more thoroughly than was necessary]], and spent much of his off-time in the Vishkar academy travelling and learning more about the natural world.
* {{Cyborg}}: To what extent and for what reason is unclear, but Lifeweaver has a decent amount of cybernetic parts, from visibly augmented feet and hands to ambiguous parts in his calves and cables in his forehead.
* DefectorFromDecadence: He was raised to be a loyal worker under [[MegaCorp Vishkar]], but eventually dropped out of its academy after disagreeing with its perfectionist, uniform standards to form his own path towards healing the world. [[ResignationsNotAccepted This wasn't on good terms]], and now he's a wanted man in many countries due to them claiming ownership of his biolight technology.
* EarthyBarefootCharacter: His whole character revolves around healing with nature and flowers, and his default outfit does not include shoes, instead having cybernetic soles built into his feet for protection.
* FloatingPlatforms: ''Petal Platform'' summons a platform that begins on the ground, but once anyone (friend or foe) steps on it, it ascends to a fixed vertical distance, carrying anyone standing on it and acting as a temporary platform for the remainder of its short lifespan. This can be used to help Lifeweaver and/or his teammates reach places they wouldn't normally be able to, or help them get out of a tight situation as the platform is itself terrain that absorbs enemy fire, ''or'' act as a trap for enemies that catches them out of position.
* FlowerMotifs: Lotuses are a heavy influence on the designs of both him and his abilities, and even his nickname Bua means "lotus" or "water lily" in Thai. Additionally, his cosmetics frequently depict him with roses.
* GentleGiant: He's surprisingly tall, almost as big as Junker Queen, but he plays as a loyal support hero and is one of the most reserved, quietly polite characters in the game.
* GreenThumb: Lifeweaver's ultimate has him summon the ''Tree of Life'', a massive HardLight tree that heals allies around it and acts as a massive piece of terrain to obstruct enemies. It appears to not just be an aesthetic choice -- his biolight technology is said to have massive potential for both medicine ''and'' agriculture.
* HardLight: He wields a variant of it called "biolight", allowing him to not only create physical constructs, but imbue healing in people similar to the "biotic" technology found in other heroes. [[MegaCorp Vishkar]] has been on Lifeweaver's tail in trying to gain this kind of tech for themselves, and he's not letting them have any of it.
* MagicFromTechnology: Despite featuring the usual sci-fi aesthetic found in ''Overwatch'', Lifeweaver feels like a fantasy {{druid}} at heart, casting various healing powers using his "biolight" technology.
* MindOverMatter: ''Life Grip'' allows him to snatch an ally from a long distance and pull them right to his feet. This acts as a sort of benevolent version of [[YouWillNotEvadeMe Roadhog's hook]], where it can instantly pluck an ally out of danger, [[DifficultButAwesome though it must be used wisely]] as to not [[UnwantedAssistance screw up any deliberate engages]] or accidentally put them in ''more'' danger (don't be standing in front of any BottomlessPits!).
* MysticalLotus: Lifeweaver is heavily associated with lotus flowers, and while his biolight generation powers are explicitly technological in nature, [[MagicFromTechnology in practice they resemble magic spells]], with Lifeweaver himself designed like a futuristic [[{{Druid}} fantasy druid]] with an air of mysticism and spirituality.
* NavelDeepNeckline: Rare male example. Lifeweaver's shirt is open enough to show off his chest and a good portion of his abs.
* NiceGuy: He's very approachable and polite, even on the battlefield, and the vast majority of his voice lines and interactions present him as an optimist who always has something nice to say.
* PetalPower: Lotus petals are a pervasive motif surrounding Lifeweaver, with his healing taking the form of synthetic lotus buds and mandala-style petal arrangements featured in his ''Petal Platform'' and throughout his overall costume design.
* PrettyBoy: In a cast of men who are more on the ruggedly handsome side, Lifeweaver stands out for having an air of elegance to him while still being the biggest support of the bunch, making him very easy on the eyes. It's explained in his [[https://youtu.be/ch8-KNJJsZY?t=97 Developer Update]] that he was deliberately designed to be a beautiful-looking character, with his long hair and chiseled features complimenting his warm and supportive personality. In game, his good looks are usually on display in his cosmetics, but occasionally referenced by other characters too.
-->'''Sojourn, killing Lifeweaver:''' Maybe stick to magazine covers.
* TheRedMage: Among the Support heroes, Lifeweaver dips his toes into many different means of playing the game, coming at the cost of not specializing too hard in any one of them. His healing is below-average, often compared to that of Zenyatta, but while Zenyatta gets more of his actual mileage out of [[CombatMedic offensive debuffs and high damage]], Lifeweaver instead focuses on various kinds of positioning power with his ''Petal Platform'' (giving himself and his team a burst of altitude and impeding the enemy with a floating platform), ''Life Grip'' (allowing him to rescue and/or reposition allies in a pinch) and ''Tree of Life'' (creating a ''big'' enemy impediment while also providing much stronger healing over time).
* SlobsVersusSnobs: {{Downplayed|Trope}} as both of them are elegant and caring in their own ways, but he shares this dynamic with Symmetra. Whereas Symmetra is [[ThePerfectionist an obsessive perfectionist]] who maintains loyalty ([[PunchClockVillain for the most part]]) towards Vishkar and its pursuit of order, Lifeweaver quickly tired of such pursuits and dropped out of Vishkar Academy to bring about peace in his own way. This conflict was especially pronounced as the [[RoommateDrama two were roommates]], with Symmetra visibly annoyed by his undisciplined habits.
-->'''Lifeweaver''': You know, you were the best roommate I ever had!\
'''Symmetra''': You were third-best. The other two went to bed at appropriate times.\
'''Lifeweaver''': 4 AM is perfectly appropriate if you're working on a great idea!
* SpikeShooter: ''Thorn Volley'' has him shooting pink thorn projectiles from his right hand as his sole means of dealing damage.
* TerrainSculpting: Both ''Petal Platform'' and ''Tree of Life'' summon interactive terrain that, similar to Mei's ''Ice Wall'', both possess collision and interrupt line-of-sight, but can be destroyed if they take enough enemy damage. ''Petal Platform'' [[FloatingPlatforms grants altitude]] when someone steps on it, and ''Tree of Life'' -- while likely to be used more for its healing effect -- is itself a massive world entity that blocks enemy fire, possessing a noticeably large canopy to block vertical fire.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Symmetra. She was the only fellow student at the Vishkar Arcitech Academy who didn't immediately reject Lifeweaver, and their relationship fluctuates between constant petty snipping and disagreements alongside sincere respect and affection.
* WealthyPhilanthropist: Unlike Symmetra, Lifeweaver came from a rich background and was set on a path to work under Vishkar under the payroll of his parents, [[BrilliantButLazy though he would much rather use it to travel the world and play his part as an environmentalist.]] Ever since he dropped out and took his biolight technology with him, with Vishkar constantly on his tail, his parents have cut him off from their wealth in order to get him to return and make peace with the corporation, though given that would entail sacrificing ownership of his tech, he isn't particularly interested in such "support" any further.

\
Lúcio is an international celebrity who inspires social change through his music and actions.
\
Lúcio Correia dos Santos grew up in Rio de Janeiro, in a poor and crowded favela that was hit hard by the financial upheaval following the Omnic Crisis. As Brazil began the long process of recovery, he wanted to find a way to lift the spirits of those around him. He found his answer in music and its power to bring people together and even help them forget their troubles, if only for a short time. He performed on street corners, in block parties, and as he got older, at a string of legendary underground shows.
\
But Lúcio's close-knit community was thrown into chaos when the multinational Vishkar Corporation secured a contract to redevelop large tracts of the city. Lúcio and his neighbors had been told that the development would improve their lives. However, that promise never became a reality. Vishkar imposed controls on the residents in the name of building a more orderly society: enforcing curfews, cracking down on what the company perceived as lawless behavior, and exploiting the populace as a cheap labor force.
\
Lúcio wouldn't stand for it. He stole Vishkar sonic technology that had been used to suppress the people, and he converted it into a tool to rally them to action. In a popular uprising, they drove Vishkar out of their neighborhoods. Lúcio's leadership made him a star overnight and a symbol for positive social change. His music skyrocketed in popularity. Whereas he had once performed locally, he was now filling arenas across the world.
\
With his newfound fame, Lúcio realizes that he has an opportunity to make a difference and change the world for the better.
\
Lúcio sends a distress call to the newly reformed Overwatch during the events of the second game, when Null Sector invades Rio de Janeiro, and joins the organization to help defend his city.\
\
Lúcio is able to battle his enemies and assist his allies through music, using it to heal and increase his team's mobility.
* His '''[[MakeSomeNoise Sonic Amplifier]]''' is able to fire short bursts of sound at enemies, or let out a large, close-range '''Soundwave''' to knock them back.
* '''[[StanceSystem Crossfade]]''' has him switch between two songs to either passively speed up or heal himself and nearby allies within his area.
* '''[[StatusBuff Amp It Up]]''', has him increase the volume of his music, increasing the effect of the current song.
* '''[[LeParkour Wall Ride]]''' is a passive that allows Lúcio to slide along walls by simply jumping on one, enabling him to quickly get around terrain.
* With his ultimate, '''[[DeflectorShields Sound Barrier]]''', Lúcio slams his weapon into the ground, causing protective waves to echo out and protect his allies with shields that dissipate over time.
-----
* AbnormalAmmo: While he primarily uses sound blasts and music to fight and support his team, his reload animation has him replace his ''Sonic Amplifier's'' vacuum tube.
* AnimalMotifs: The tree frog. He has a tattoo of one on his right arm, and also has a frog logo on his shirt, along with a backpack that bears resemblance to an open-mouthed frog. His "Ribbit" and "Hippityhop" skins give him Music/Deadmau5-styled helmets based on frogs.
* AreaOfEffect: How his healing and speed-boosting work. Unlike most healers who have to aim at their patients to restore their health, Lúcio simply needs to get near them for his effects to kick in.
* ArchEnemy: To Symmetra, as the Vishkar Corporation, the organization Symmetra represents, is responsible for the oppression of his home and people.
* AscendedMeme: One of his rarer lines upon being ''[[SuperMode Nano-Boosted]]'' (which is very ineffective when used on him) is him shouting "BOOSTIIOOOOOO!", referencing the [[invoked]]FanNickname based on his infamous tendency for stealing ''Nano-Boosts'' from the intended target by jumping in from out of nowhere, effectively wasting it.
* BadassAdorable: Admit it, he is a very cute and upbeat guy who is also can kick ass with his Sonic Amplifier.
* BadassArmfold: Being a charismatic celebrity who is also a powerful LightningBruiser in battle, Lúcio's default appearance in the game's menus has him in this pose, expressing confidence.
* BecomingTheCostume:
** While using the "Slapshot" or "Breakaway" skins, he might shout out "C'mon! Drop the gloves" upon landing a final blow.
** His "Seleção" and "Striker" skins change his hero swap line from "Lúcio comin' at you!" to "Lúcio checkin' in the game!" Additionally, he gets a bonus pre-game setup line: "My ratings? 99 pace, 99 dribbling, 99 making this look good!"
** His "Jazzy" Skin changes his songs to two types of Jazz: soft jazz for healing and a freeform jazz remix for speed.
** His "Hermes" skin changes his characterization to that of [[Myth/ClassicalMythology the Greek messenger god]] of the same name, with a menagerie of various references to classic Greek mythology. He also gains plenty of kill-based lines for heroes also using skins based on the Greek pantheon -- for example, killing an enemy Junker Queen [[GenderFlip using her "Zeus" skin]] has him simply reply "Sorry, mom!"
** His "Space Prince" skin updates several lines in his voiceover to reflect his ''[[SpaceOpera Starwatch]]'' counterpart, with plenty more stellar-themed dialogue as per the setting.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He is hostile towards Symmetra, or just anyone within Vishkar.
--> '''Lúcio''': ''(after eliminating Symmetra)'' [[AndThisIsFor That's for my family back home!]]
* BilingualBonus: Like Symmetra, he originally had no lines in his native language. Following a patch in April 2018, he now has several Portugese quotes, including his Ultimate call-out for enemy players.
* BlownAcrossTheRoom: The effect of his ''Soundwave'' attack. It does an unimpressive 25 damage and thus rarely kills enemies directly, but can knock entire teams into BottomlessPits. It's also valuable for pushing enemies away from their targets when they're lining up kills.
* BoringButPractical:
** His most valuable ability is a passive healing buff that he grants to his allies just by being within a (fairly generous) radius, meaning that all a Lúcio has to do to be reasonably useful is hang around his allies and try not to die too much, though has has more options for general disruption [[DifficultButAwesome that require some practice.]]
** ''Soundwave'' bounces enemies backwards and does just 25 damage. On the other hand it can knock players into BottomlessPits for instant kills, can push enemy players away from their targets, reduce the damage of or even negate ultimate abilities, or even push enemies ''into'' an ally's attack. Plus it's a quick and easy way to get enemies off of you.
** Sound Barrier isn't the most flashy or unique of ultimate abilities, but it provides a colossal temporary shield boost. With the right timing it will nullify virtually any other damage-based ultimate and in team fights it can quickly turn the tables in your favor.
* CelebritySuperhero: In-universe, he's known just as much for his daring feats of heroism and ongoing activism in Rio as he is for his music.
* CloseRangeCombatant: A mixed bag. Lúcio's ''Sonic Amplifier'' fires {{Painfully Slow Projectile}}s, but they have no damage fall-off, so anything not moving or moving too predictably is fair game at a distance. However, his right click that can be used to [[RingOut shove enemies off the map]] has an extremely short range and his support aura works only if he's right next to his team.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: His weapon and skates glow green if Crossfade is set to speed boost, or yellow if it's is set to healing.
* CombatParkour: His rollerskates allow him to skate against the walls and gain speed, a common strategy is to ride the walls and shoot indiscriminately. This allows Lucio to evade enemy fire while shooting his enemies from all directions. The "Floor Is Lava" achievement rewards players for performing 3 killing blows while riding as Lucio without dying in quick or competitive play.
* TheCutie: Surprisingly the only male hero to own this trope, thanks to his very sweet and energetic personality.
* ContinuityNod: His New Year's resolution was [[FriendToAllChildren "New skates for all the kids in the neighborhood."]] A few months later during the "Uprising" event, [[https://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/overwatch/images/5/51/Spray_Lucio_Skates.png/revision/latest?cb=20170417201053 he got a spray that shows he kept his promise.]]
* DifficultButAwesome:
** His {{Wall Run}}ning needs a bit of [[SomeDexterityRequired dexterity]] to pull off, especially when also trying to attack enemies, but once you get the hang of it, the result is a fly-on-the-wall who can push his way to higher ground and becomes very difficult to hit reliably (and even if he does get hit, he can just regenerate the lost health once he's using the appropriate song).
** Sound Barrier only lasts for six seconds, meaning it requires significant situational awareness and careful timing in order to activate it at the best possible moment. If you manage to use it correctly Sound Barrier will negate the damage from almost any other damage-based ultimate ability or otherwise instantly turn a losing team fight back in your favor.
* DiscoTech: His weapons utilize music as a supportive and offensive force, and playing different music activates abilities that have varying effects on himself and his allies.
* DreadlockRasta: He has dreadlocks, and is against oppressive authoritarian figures. He was even the instigator of a local uprising when the Vishkar Corporation took over his home and exploited his neighbors. If you changed the blue in his outfit to red, he'd even match the colors.
* FamedInStory: He is a world-touring musician with his own merchandice. D.Va can ask for an autograph for his new album before a match.
* FragileSpeedster: Not quite as fragile as poster girl Tracer with his 200 HP, but with his speed aura, ''Amp It Up'' boost and wall riding accelerating him further, a good player can easily make his speed his most important defensive asset.
* FriendlyRivalry: Has a minor one with Tracer over who's the fastest.
* FunPersonified: Uses his music to lift people's spirits and is almost always cheerful and upbeat in-game.
* GrindBoots: The skates on his boots let him slide along walls.
* GroundPunch: His ultimate has him doing this with his ''Sonic Amplifier'', producing protective waves of sound to echo out and protect his nearest allies with shields that dissipate over time. It's even part of the ultimate's mechanics: if he doesn't punch the ground, the ultimate doesn't activate (an exception is if he's being hoisted in the air by Sigma's ''Gravitic Flux'', creating an elevated "floor" that lets him use it mid-air).
* HealThyself: His healing from ''Crossfade'' also affects him.
* HockeyFight: Can be invoked by equipping his "Breakaway" or "Slapshot" skins. He's actually a hockey fan, as evidenced by his special pre-battle quotes for the Hollywood and Volskaya Industries maps.
* {{Irony}}: While his name is linked to "light", it is his ArchEnemy Symmetra who actually attacks with it. Also, despite their rivalry, Lúcio's speed boost allows Symmetra to close in faster for her primary fire.
* HopeBringer: A big part of his backstory in how he uses music to inspire social change.
* JustLikeRobinHood:
** Always believing in the poor, suffering people. When one certain corrupt, rich corporation enslaves the people, Lúcio then stole something from them and shared its benefits with the people, creating an uprising that drove the corporation away.
** Demonstrated in a quiet way in ''Literature/TheHeroOfNumbani'': upon first meeting Efi and Orisa in Numbani, he gifts them with [[GravityMaster a Tobelstein reactor]] that Efi had on her online wish-list. He later casually admits it was stolen -- he'd been "hanging around a new crowd lately" who got their hands on the tech, and believed the two would have much better use for something as expensive and powerful as it than Katya Volskaya.
* {{Keet}}: The guy is full of positive energy, even on the battlefield.
--> "Aw, this is my jam!" \
"Party on the objective!" \
"OH, LET'S BREAK IT ''DOWN!''"
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: Turns out he's a fan of D.Va as much as she is a fan of him. They ask each other for their autographs when on a team together.
* {{Knockback}}: His alternate fire can knock back enemies hit by it, which is useful in pushing them off the map.
* LightningBruiser: For a Support hero. He's extremely versatile, offering decent damage output at range, constant healing and enhanced movement to all teammates surrounding him at once (including himself), knockback (letting him relatively easily knock enemies off maps and into their demise instantly) and an ultimate ability that provides unmatched protection for his team (if only for a short while). And to top it all off, he can wallride on almost any surface potentially indefinitely, netting him exceptional mobility and making him very difficult to hit.
* MakeSomeNoise:
** Lúcio's equipped with modified sonic projection equipment stolen from the Vishkar Corporation, and his ''Sonic Amplifier'' fires bursts of sound as concussive force. It was later revealed that the technology was the brainchild of his father, but at some point it fell into the hands of Vishkar, who patented it as their own.
** The extent of the tech is further explored in ''Literature/TheHeroOfNumbani'': after Doomfist and a Talon squad attack the Unity Event, as Lúcio and Orisa fight them off, Efi and several of her friends rig up a gigantic version of his Sonic Amplifier. [[LoudOfWar The resulting blast of sound is so crazy]] that it knocks out pretty much all of the Talon squad and shatters a giant sculpture, forcing them into a retreat.
* MeaningfulName: [[https://twitter.com/westofhouse/status/968890859436392448 Per word of god]], "We named him Lúcio because of the name's association with "light," which seems like a perfect word to describe our favorite optimistic DJ and ray of sunshine!"
* NamesToTrustImmediately: As explained under MeaningfulName, his name is derived from the Latin word for light, and he's one of the most unambiguously good characters in ''Overwatch''. His middle name "Correia" is derived from "corrigia" a Latin word for "fastening" or "To straighten or to correct". With that in mind, his full name translates to "Light to straighten of the saints" or "Light to correct of the saints".
* NiceGuy: He's always friendly and upbeat.
--> '''Lúcio''': ''(setting up)'' [[SincerityMode Look at this team! We're gonna do great.]]
* NotEvenBotheringWithTheAccent: Despite being Brazilian, Lúcio speaks with an American accent. Though as of the ''Retribution'' event update he finally has Portuguese voice-lines even in the North American release.
* NowBuyTheMerchandise: Lúcio has some merchandise beyond his music [[InUniverse in-universe]] and one of his unlockable voice lines sees him plug his cereal "Lúcio-Oh's". Hilariously, Blizzard later did a promotional deal with Kellogg's [[{{Defictionalization}} and began producing it as an actual breakfast cereal.]]
* ObviousRulePatch: In the 2018 version of Capture the Flag, it was made that anyone carrying the flag would drop it the instant they use any mobility abilities, as in the past year, mobile heroes with the flag were virtually unstoppable. However, Lúcio briefly got around this with his WallRun [[LoopholeAbuse which was counted as a passive]], giving him a much greater degree of mobility in running with the flag than any other hero. A few days later, it was patched so he now drops the flag when using the ability.
* OrderVsChaos: His rivalry with Symmetra boils down to this, Lúcio stood in the "Chaos" side and believes in the freedom of people, opposing Vishkar/Symmetra's obsession on putting people in their order.
* OutOfFocus: From a lore standpoint, Lúcio is almost completely ancillary. Receiving little focus and has had next to no involvement with the big plot points until ''Overwatch 2''.
* TheParagon: Lúcio rallied the people of Rio de Janeiro against Vishkar and lead them in protest. Causing Vishkar to leave Rio de Janeiro and for Lúcio to become a symbol of social change.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Lúcio is a NiceGuy, yes, but he got the freedom of his people by stealing technology from Vishkar. Stealing is supposed to be bad, but because it's directed against a corrupt corporation hiding behind nice words like "order" or "better living" while making people suffer, [[ItsPersonal one who apparently exploited his father to create the sonic technology he stole]], it's not quite crime in Lúcio's eyes [[AssholeVictim if the target actually deserves it.]]
* PintSizedPowerhouse: He's only 5'3", making him outright ''tiny'' for a guy, and is the second shortest male character in the game besides Torbjörn.
* PoweredArmor: {{Downplayed|Trope}}, in that he only wears a half-suit of powered armor, covering his lower body. This is what gives him the RequiredSecondaryPowers needed to properly utilize the GrindBoots over his feet.
* PunnyName: His Ultimate is a pun on the term "sound barrier", referring to the resulting cone of air right before an object surpasses the speed of sound and the fact that he uses music and sound to create a shield (barrier) for his teammates.
* RagsToRiches: From a kid growing up in a favela hit hard by financial upheaval to a world-famous celebrity.
* RingOut: While there are a few heroes with knockback abilities, ''Soundwave's'' low cooldown and high control on which direction it's going to knock the target back makes Lúcio particularly adept at doing this on the maps where it is possible.
* TheRival: With Symmetra. Lúcio makes it no secret that he hates the oppression brought about by both Symmetra and Vishkar, and will gladly mock her blind obedience to the corporate's hypocritical claims and justify his stealing of their technology, [[PayEvilUntoEvil since they apparently started it first.]]
* RollerbladeGood: Travels around the field using rollerskates. One of the things he can do is skate along walls! Two of his Legendary skins replace the rollerblades with ice skates.
* RunningGag: Starting from ''2'', Lúcio made it a habit of asking his allies what their favorite animals are before the start of matches. So far, we've learned that it's scorpions for Ashe, tiger sharks for Baptiste, Siberian tigers for Brigitte, [[RealMenWearPink starlings for Doomfist]], triceratops for Genji, squirrels for Mercy, [[SesquipedalianLoquaciousness the "Scolopendra gigantea"]] (aka the Amazonian giant centipede) for Moira, ants for Ramattra ''and'' Zenyatta, dragonflies for Symmetra, [[AnimalMotifs the black widow for Widowmaker]], and rabbits for Zarya ("The huge ones!"). After some consideration, Winston deems [[HumansAreSpecial humans]] to be his favorite creatures, and Junker Queen asks if there exists [[NinjaPirateZombieRobot a dingo mixed with a shark]]. Bastion's response is inconclusive [[TheUnintelligible for obvious reasons]], and Echo picks an animal at random (usually someone else's choice).
* SharpDressedMan: His "Jazzy" skin replaces his usual outfit with a button-down shirt and tie, WaistcoatOfStyle, and matching fedora.
* ShirtlessScene: His "Capoeria" and "Equalizer" skins have him go shirtless.
* SignificantBirthDate: His birthday, March 20th, is [[AnimalMotifs World Frog Day]].
* SimpleYetAwesome: Mechanically, Lúcio's kit has a rather low skill floor, with a lot of his utility boiling down to "stay near allies, passively buff them, try not to die," which manages to give his team a lot of survivability and pressure, particularly when combined with a good sense of timing on ''Amp It Up''. In skilled hands Lúcio with a firm grasp on WallRun mechanics, he can become an even-more mobile harasser as well as a healer, and with good positioning he can instakill enemies by knocking them into pits.
* SoulBrotha: His design invokes a funky, "cool" vibe, though instead of an afro, he has a dreadlock hair for another type of funky look. His attacks are all based on music and he rolls around on skates. He likes to say things like "Aw, yeah!" and "Let's break it DOWN!". Makes sense as he's supposed to be a DJ since most people with that job have that vibe.
* TechnoWizard: Converted Vishkar's technology (which he stole) into weaponized DiscoTech that he uses in battle.
* TigerVersusDragon: The tiger to Symmetra's dragon, Lucio became a hero because he bases his actions on his emotions and believes in freedom of choice over peace through oppression. Interestingly, Lucio's ultimate involves boosting the health and endurance of his allies, like how a tiger-esque character would charge into battle without aforethought to fight opponents.
* WallRun: His passive ability. It's actually far more useful than you'd expect: since you gain some slight elevation while leaping off of walls, [[SomeDexterityRequired with a little bit]] [[DifficultButAwesome of practice,]] it can help you traverse map terrain very well on top of just making yourself a harder target to hit. Players who ''really'' know maps inside and out can pull off some very impressive and practical tricks using it, [[https://gfycat.com/OptimalConfusedBunting some being able to traverse entire stretches without ever touching the ground.]]
** A good Lúcio can contest objectives all by himself via weaving across the walls around corners too quickly for enemies to follow, particularly if there's a central pillar that can shield him from attacks. Taking him down involves either good aim... or [[StuffBlowingUp copious amounts of explosives]] to displace him and set him up for an easier kill shot.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: His "Seleção" skin from the Summer games gives him an outfit with the color scheme of the Brazilian flag. It also invokes the trope rather literally, as it gives him the Bandeira do Brasil on his headband.

A guardian angel to those who come under her care, Dr. Angela Ziegler is a peerless healer, a brilliant scientist, and a staunch advocate for peace.
\
Ziegler rose to become the head of surgery at a prominent Swiss hospital before pioneering a breakthrough in the field of applied nanobiology that radically improved the treatment of life-threatening illnesses and injuries. It was this expertise that attracted the attention of Overwatch.
\
Because her parents had been taken by war, Ziegler was opposed to the organization's militaristic approach to keeping global peace. Ultimately, she recognized that Overwatch offered her the opportunity to save lives on a much larger scale. As Overwatch's head of medical research, Angela sought to leverage her work for healing in frontline crises. The result was the Valkyrie swift-response suit, which Ziegler herself piloted on many Overwatch missions.
\
Despite her contributions to Overwatch, she was often at odds with her superiors and the organization's overarching aims. When Overwatch dissolved, Ziegler dedicated herself to helping those affected by war.
\
Mercy was one of the agents that were recalled to serve Overwatch after Winston reinstated the organization. At the time, she was in Egypt taking care of injured war victims.
\
Mercy is the quintessential Support character, having abilities meant to help sustain and heal her allies as they assault enemies.
* Her '''[[HealingShiv Caduceus Staff]]''' is her main tool. The staff can channel energy into an ally, either healing them or boosting the damage they deal so long as she links it to them.
* Her weapon, the '''[[RangedEmergencyWeapon Caduceus Blaster]]''', is an automatic sidearm saved for emergencies were she has to defend herself.
* '''[[{{Flight}} Guardian Angel]]''' causes her to fly to a nearby ally's position from a long range. While gliding, she builds up momentum, which she can use while jumping mid-flight to launch her into higher altitude.
* '''[[BackFromTheDead Resurrect]]''', can be channeled into a slain ally, where after a few seconds, she restores them to full health on the spot.
* Her passive ability, '''Angelic Descent''', allows her to gracefully float down from a high distance.
* Her ultimate ability, '''[[SuperMode Valkyrie]]''', gives her full flight capabilities and empowers her other abilities for 20 seconds: '''Caduceus Staff''' gains doubled range with a beam that chains to allies near the target, her health regeneration is always on regardless of whether or not she takes damage, '''Caduceus Blaster''' gains doubled projectile speed and an infinite-ammo magazine, and '''Guardian Angel''' gains doubled speed and range.
-----
* AnimeHair: Not the most pronounced example in the game, but Mercy’s commendable locks approach [[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure Kakyoin]]-levels of fabulous.
* AntiFrustrationFeatures: Switching between her ''Caduceus Blaster'' and ''Caduceus Staff'' after 1.4 seconds will automatically reload the Blaster. This means Mercy will always have a full clip of her Blaster if she ever needs to change from healin' to killin'.
* ArtisticLicenseMedicine: The names of her ''Caduceus Blaster'' and ''Caduceus Staff'' reflect the common misconception that the caduceus (featuring two serpents entwined around a staff with two wings) is the ancient Greek symbol for medicine. It's actually a symbol of messengers and heralds. The Rod of Asclepius, which features a single serpent entwined around a staff without wings, is the Greek symbol of medicine.
* AscendedGlitch: Mercy players found a bug where if she crouches, glides to an ally, then jumps within a split second on arrival, she'll perform a "super jump" that grants her ''much'' greater altitude than normal. [[https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/i0t53g/ask_us_anything_join_the_overwatch_development/fzsaj7o/ The dev team claimed]] this was unintentional and they originally planned on patching it out, but due to its popularity (as well as [[AdvancedMovementTechnique the skill required to pull it off]]), they decided to leave it in and twig it around so it works more consistently. The feature was further tweaked in the first ''Overwatch 2'' beta, allowing her to cancel her glide to initiate the jump, specifically as a way to make the ability easier and more accessible for players.
* BackFromTheDead: Her ''Resurrect'' ability brings an ally back to life.
* BadassAdorable: Not to an extent like others, but she is a very beautiful CombatMedic with plenty of endearing character beats to match her power in gameplay.
* BadassBoast: Has a pretty good one if the "Witch" skin is equipped and she's on fire:
-->'''Mercy''': ''I'm on fire! But this [[BurnTheWitch witch doesn't burn]].''
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: She's a very attractive woman with youthful looks, and one of the kindest and most compassionate characters in the game.
* BecomingTheCostume:
** Her "Devil" and "Imp" skins change her ''Resurrect'' callout to "Heroes never die! [[DealWithTheDevil ...for a price."]] Additionally, her hero change line goes from "Mercy on call" to "Mercy is summoned."
** Her "Sigrún" or "Valkyrie" changes her ''Resurrect'' callout to "Til Valhalla!" Also, her hero change is changed to "Mercy is here."
** Her "Witch" skin gives her a large amount of magic-related lines, such as saying "Casting healing spell" while healing an ally or "I'm on fire, but this witch doesn't burn!" when "on fire." [[RuleOfThree Again,]] she gets a new ''Resurrect'' callout in "My servants never die!" She also gains lines which suggest she is the same character as the Witch in the brawl, such as reminding Junkenstein of their deal, offering Ana, Cassidy and Soldier: 76 (calling them by the name they have in the brawl).
** Her "Winged Victory" skin gets yet another ''Resurrect'' callout: "Onwards to victory!" She also gets a new ''Guardian Angel'' line, "You needed a goddess?"
** Her ''[[MirrorUniverse Mirrorwatch]]''-themed "Vengeance" skin recharacterizes Mercy to being among the villainous forces of Talon, with her gaining plenty more lines that take on a much more mean-spirited (or at the very least, passive-aggressive) Mercy.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's a kindly, empathetic TeamMom but she won't hesitate to call out cruelty or unethical behavior. She makes no secret of her disgust towards [[EvilutionaryBiologist Moira]]. In-game she can also be [[CombatMedic surprisingly effective with her pistol.]]
-->'''Mercy (to Moira):''' How are you funding your crimes against humanity these days?
* BilingualBonus: On her left shoulder is a winged circle insignia with the Latin phrase "''Primum non nocere''" -- the opening words of the Hippocratic Oath. In English, it means "First, do no harm." She also has several quotes in German, with one or two in Swiss German.
* BlueIsHeroic: Equipping her with the "Cobalt" skin replaces the white parts of her outfit with blue.
* BoringButPractical: A good Mercy player is practically invisible to her teammates, with her only "big" plays coming with well-timed and coordinated resurrections. She's not going to be getting huge multi-kills or earning four or more medals, thus why a lot of glory-seeking players HATE getting stuck using her and why spectators hate watching her.
* BottomlessMagazines: As long as her ''Valkyrie'' ultimate is active, she never has to reload her gun.
* BraidsOfAction: Her "Sigrún" and "Valkyrie" skins have a thick, single braid in their hair.
* ChainLightning: During her [[SuperMode Valkyrie Mode,]] her Healing and Damage Boost functionality chains to nearby allies.
* ChainmailBikini: Subverted in her Halloween witch outfit, as it is made of normal fabric and exposes both her cleavage and bare thighs, but is just a costume that wasn't intended for battle.
* ChildProdigy: The [[https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20748475927#post-12 lead writer]] confirms that she completed her education at a very early age.
* CombatMedic: With more focus on the medic side, but can fight using her ''Caduceus Blaster'' if she [[https://youtu.be/11UmrnzQk8A?t=138 really]], ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH-AuxNTVCg really]]'' has to, and ''[[SuperMode Valkyrie]]'' gives her unlimited ammo and faster projectile speed to make it easier if you so choose. She also has a skin named "Combat Medic Ziegler".
* CombatStilettos: For whatever reason, her super-advanced Valkyrie suit also includes a pair of heels.
* CoolBigSis: She develops a protective attitude towards Tracer in ''Uprising'' by offering her some encouragement as the strike team ships out, going out of her way to check on her in the field and even referring to her by name rather than by rank or call sign.
* CordonBleughChef: If Genji's comment to Tracer during the ''Storm Rising'' event is to be believed, he's the only one at Overwatch who can stomach Mercy's coffee. [[DamnedByFaintPraise And it's ambiguous how much of a digestive system he's got left.]]
* CripplingOverspecialization: She is the most dedicated and powerful healer in the game, so much so that she cannot perform any damage or tanklike function and thus must be protected by her teammates. In-universe, Mercy was opposed to the military aspects of Overwatch, only joining to help the victims of war.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Equipping the "Devil" and "Imp" skins turns her into a cute demon lady, which is ironic considering her [[OurAngelsAreDifferent default motif]].
* CuteWitch:
** The child version of Mercy in her "Trick or Treat" spray looks like a blonde version of iconic CuteWitch Kiki from ''Anime/KikisDeliveryService''.
** Also in the "Junkenstein" comic, where the younger Mercy listening to Reinhardt's tale is absolutely adorable.
* TheCutie: She is a beautiful sweetheart who has a absolute endearing personality and is one of the kindest characters of the game.
* DavidVersusGoliath: Despite the power of her sidearm pistol, Mercy is much squishier than most characters and in no way suited for close-quarters combat. But, if she gets a melee kill, she quips, "You might not want to tell your friends about that!"
* DeadlyDoctor: One of the best doctors in the world, Mercy can use her healing staff either to increase her allies' damage or as an improvised melee weapon.
* DeadpanSnarker: Not as often, [[NotSoAboveItAll but she has her moments]], especially when dealing with some of the crazier members of the cast.
-->'''Junkrat:''' Doc, I've got this rash that won't go away. I've tried everything: radiation, dirt, radioactive dirt...\
'''Mercy:''' Have you tried bandaging your mouth?\
'''Junkrat:''' Would that help?\
'''Mercy:''' ''(Sighs)'' It would help ''me.''
* DealWithTheDevil:
** Using her ultimate with the "Devil" skin, which changes her line to "Heroes never die... for a price."
** If she's wearing her "Witch" skin, she'll also propose a deal to Cassidy (proposing to heal his arm), Ana (her eye) and Soldier: 76 (to undo the choices he regrets).
* DifficultButAwesome: Her damage boost functionality is rarely used, as there's always teammates to be healed and topped off. But knowing when to use it and ''coordinating'' with your teammates can turn a teamfight into a [[CurbStompBattle massacre.]] For a most basic example, you hear Roadhog saying "Get over here!" signifying a hit with his hook which is due to be followed up by his ShortRangeShotgun, boosting him for that one shot can mean the difference between a heavily wounded enemy escaping and a OneHitKill. [[OhCrap And when she boosts an Ultimate...]]
%%* DirtyBusiness: Being a part of Overwatch was this for Mercy.
* DudeWheresMyRespect:
** Being a healer can be a thankless task, and Blizzard has given her voice lines that [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall allow Mercy players to express frustration at this.]]
---> ''"Sometimes I'm not sure why I even bother."''\
''"Questionable judgement."''\
''"You're welcome."''
** [[PlayedForDrama Played more seriously]] in the actual lore. As "Valkyrie" details, her ties to the now-fallen Overwatch has done a number on her professional reputation, [[UntrustingCommunity making many communities and organizations untrustworthy of her]], yet she's still committed to her job and tries to not let it bother her.
--->''"The truth is that in their time of need, people still expect us to come to their aid, [[UngratefulBastard even as they curse us]]. I didn’t become a doctor to be thanked."''
* EasterEgg: If every other hero on her team has a way to heal themselves through abilities or passives, Mercy acknowledges it in a pre-game voice line:
-->"Everyone on this team can heal themselves! This should be easy!"
* EndearinglyDorky: She can be very cute in gameplay with her emotes and voice lines. For example, just watch her do "The Hustle" dance and try to say she isn't ''that'' adorable.
* EvilLaugh: Her "Witch" skin gives her [[https://youtu.be/bNC7NwIeK58?t=40 one]].
* FairySexy: Her "Sugar Plum Fairy" skin shows off her cleavage and her long legs.
* FormFittingWardrobe: Her regular outfit is PoweredArmor with breasts outlined. In her "Sigrún" and "Valkyrie" skins, Mercy wears a breastplate with literal breasts cupped in the armor.
* FourGods: The Year of the Dog Chinese New Year event gives her Zhūquè, the Vermillion Bird. There is a stylized glowing symbol of a red bird on the flap of her dress.
* FragileSpeedster: Mercy has only 200 HP, so she needs to use her Guardian Angel ability to zip around when surrounded by allies and avoid damage. She does have RegeneratingHealth, however, which gives her a decent amount of survivability if she manages to find cover.
* GenreBlind: In a kinder setting, her views on nonviolence and ethics might have paved a way for other heroes to follow. In the story itself, she can't even dissuade or prohibit Overwatch from weaponizing her Caduceus technology into a rifle and grenadier set that can actually IMPEDE people's ability to heal.
* GentlemanSnarker: Though you're not going to hear it that often, she can be hilariously sarcastic to enemies she eliminates.
--> ''(After killing someone)'' Say "Ahhh!"\
--> ''(After killing someone [[CherryTapping with a melee attack)]]'' You might not want to tell your friends about that!
* GetBackHereBoss: The good news is that Mercy is squishy and easily taken down one-on-one (though you may still want to be careful against that Blaster of hers). The bad news is that her ''Guardian Angel'' allows her to immediately fly off to a far away teammate, well away from your engagement range. And when you make your way to her, with a 1.5-second cooldown and an adequately spaced-apart team, she can fly away to ''another'' teammate and refuse to fight you on your terms. This doesn't even touch her in ''Valkyrie''-mode, where she can manually fly herself away and out of your range for a good 20 seconds.
* GoldAndWhiteAreDivine: Fitting her angelic appearance.
* GuardianAngel: Her general motif, woven into her characterization with all the subtlety of a truck to the face.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Her hair is a light platinum blonde, and is one of the nicest characters in the game. Her "Valkyrie" skin also has blonde hair, though it's more golden.
* HartmanHips: Much like Symmetra, Mercy's hips are about as wide as her shoulders.
* HealingFactor: Her Valkyrie suit will start to heal her one second after she last takes damage. During her SuperMode, it is uninterruptible by damage, making her that much tankier.
* TheHeart: In the "We Are Overwatch" cinematic trailer, she is Compassion to go with Tracer's Determination and Reinhardt's Honor.
* HeroicSuicide: Normally, it was common to see after a team wipe the remaining Mercy diving into the middle of the chaos to get a 5-man rez, but getting herself killed in the process. Not usually recommended if you actually plan on staying alive, but it can be a clutch recovery strategy to instantly bring the rest of the team back into the fight. She gained the same temporary invulnerability that her resurrected teammates did during the activation following a Season 4 patch, making this less frequent, but she lost it again following her Season 6 rework, though with ''Resurrect'' now being a single-target ability, [[SenselessSacrifice such a sacrifice would be pretty inefficient.]]
* HolyHalo: She has a golden headpiece that resembles a halo.
* HotWitch: Her choice of costume for Halloween is a sexy witch. Originally her costume was just found in a picture on some maps, but after fan outcry demanded it be a skin, she received the "Witch" skin for the first Halloween event.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Even as a medic with pure intentions and advanced technology on her side, Ziegler's ties to Overwatch precedes her, with her [[UngratefulBastard being outright told she wasn't welcome in places where she came to help]].
* ImprobableAge: On two sides; on one hand, she's a definite ChildProdigy and Overwatch was interested in her early on, as per [[http://i.imgur.com/FAGyx4z.jpg this picture]], when she was 17, and tied with her official backstory. While she didn't join up with Overwatch immediately, she did become head of surgery at a prominent hospital before she joined, meaning she was at most in her late twenties when she ascended to head of surgery. Meanwhile, in the present day Mei comments that Mercy "hasn't aged a day" -- it's heavily implied her medical technology has increased her lifespan as well those she helps save.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Has blue eyes, and is a kind and compassionate healer.
* {{Jetpack}}: The Valkyrie suit is built with a jetpack modelled after a pair of wings. This lets her instantly fly to an ally's side and slow her own descent.
* LethalJokeCharacter: Mercy going on offense is supposed to be a non-threat, but she can actually be pretty effective at times. Her pistol has perfect accuracy and no damage drop-off, so if she can score a burst of headshots from a distance, it can quickly take out the squishier DPS characters. In her Valkyrie mode, it's not unheard of for a Mercy to leave off healing and seek out vulnerable DPS heroes, using her manueverability, speed and bottomless magazine to overwhelm them.
* LesserOfTwoEvils: She vehemently opposed Overwatch's militaristic approaches to global crises and their overarching aims, but she knew that without Overwatch's technology and resources, she would never have the ability to heal large numbers of people as efficiently or quickly.
* LightIsGood: She wears equipment that makes her look angelic, only has a small sidearm for personal defense, her ultimate allows her to bring all her deceased teammates in the area back to life, and her backstory involves her having a ''very'' hard time reconciling her role as a healer with her employment by a militarized task force (even one as staunchly good and honorable as Overwatch was).
* MagicalGirlWarrior: Mercy's "[[PinkHeroine Pink]]" skin from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation charity gives her an elaborate outfit that evokes magical girls. The outfit is heavily themed around pink ribbon universally associated with breast cancer awareness, including a pink ribbon that intertwines with her chest armor around her neck, a waist ribbon inlaid into her corset, her hair tied up into cute pigtails with pink ribbon, and just a touch of FrillsOfJustice. There are even some additional harp sound effects for some of her abilities.
* MartialPacifist: She hates violence and killing, but she has the option of using an auto-fire pistol with deadly accuracy.
* MassResurrection: Prior to her Season 6 rework, ''Resurrect'' was her ultimate, able to instantly resurrect all allies within 15 meters.
* MeaningfulAppearance: Her outfit is predominately white, to denote her purity, [[DressedToHeal medic role]], and angelic motifs.
* MeaningfulName: Her real name is Angela, a Latin form of the Greek αγγελος, which means "messenger of God" and is also one letter away from the word "angel." Also, her codename "Mercy" is an act of kindness and forgiveness given towards someone whom one would normally punish or harm. Her Valkyrie-themed skin is named "Sigrún" which means "victory rune" in Old Norse and is the name of a Valkyrie who fell in love with a human, the warrior hero Helgi.
* MechanicallyUnusualFighter: While Mercy does has a standard pistol as her back-up weapon, she's the only character whose primary weapon buffs/heals her own team rather than attacks the enemy. If everything is going well, Mercy won't do a single point of damage to the enemy herself.
* TheMedic: The premier healer of the game, to the point that her primary "weapon" is a tool that's only able to heal or buff up allies, relegating [[RangedEmergencyWeapon her sidearm pistol to the most dire of emergencies]]. The ''Caduceus Staff'' provides some of the highest and most easily-accessible healing per second in the game (just lock the beam onto an ally, and they'll be up to full in a matter of seconds at the most), and the rest of Mercy's kit is all about sticking to allies in need of assistance and helping her avoid the threats attempting to [[ShootTheMedicFirst shoot her down first.]]
* MercyInvincibility: People she resurrects appear in a golden outline first and are invulnerable for a moment before they can resume play. Good when you're hurriedly putting away your drink after getting your respawn unexpectedly shortened, not so good when the enemy Junkrat notices it and already has [[NoKillLikeOverkill a mine, a trap and a grenade]] [[ThisIsGonnaSuck lined up for when you get out of invincibility.]]
* ModestyShorts: In her "Pink" skin, Mercy wears small shorts under her skirt. They are barely bigger than underwear, however.
* MsFanservice: While her default outfits don't show much skin, it's completely form-fitting armor that gives her a noticeable bust, emphasizes her hips, and gives a good view of her legs. Her [[HotGoddess "Winged Victory"]], [[HotWitch "Witch"]], [[FairySexy "Sugar Plum Fairy"]] and "Atlantis" skins, though, are this trope played absolutely straight.
* MythicalMotifs:
** She's designed after a Valkyrie from Norse Mythology. Two of her skins resemble classic renditions of Valkyries.
** Her "Winged Victory" skin is designed after the Greek goddess Nike.
* NegatedMomentOfAwesome:
** Her Resurrect gives her the ability to swoop in after a kill on a critical target and undoing it with her ''Resurrect'', making you have to kill them all over again regardless of how much you sank into it. This was even more the case before her Season 6 rework, where she could instantly revive her ''entire team at once'', undoing that perfect ultimate team-wiping combo.
** However, her Mass Resurrect also punished Ultimate over-stacking and/or lack of priority targeting. Furthermore, any negated moment for the enemy doubled as a grand moment for the Mercy and her team.
* NiceGirl: She is easily one of the kindest characters in the game. She hates violence, cares deeply for her teammates, and dedicated her life to saving as many lives as possible. Even though she abhors Overwatch's methods, she still wants to help them and keep them all safe.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: A common strategy prior to her rework (in which ''Resurrect'' was moved from an area-effect Ultimate to single-target standard ability) was to bait an enemy Mercy into ''Resurrecting'' her team, but saving an Ultimate or two of your own to immediately deal with the revived enemies. Thus, if a Mercy player wasn't paying attention, she wasted her Ultimate AND made it take even ''longer'' for her team to get back in the fight. A downplayed version of this can still happen with a single-target ''Resurrect''--wait until she revives a high-priority teammate, then send that opponent back to spawn (placing ''Resurrect'' on a thirty-second cooldown having essentially accomplished nothing).
* NotAllowedToGrowOld: Mercy appears virtually identical to how she did in an old photo with the founders of Overwatch and a young Pharah. Lampshaded in a conversation with Mei.
-->'''Mei:''' Doctor Ziegler, I don't think you've aged a day since I last saw you.\
'''Mercy:''' [[HumanPopsicle And neither have you, Mei]].
* NotTheIntendedUse: Initially following her 2017 rework, some Mercy players abused the relatively high-damage per shot and perfect accuracy of the ''Caduceus Blaster'', along with the supreme mobility and BottomlessMagazines granted by her ''Valkyrie'' Ultimate, to take the fight to the enemy, gun down any hero in sight, and remain incredibly hard to hit while resurrecting fallen teammates all the while. Blizzard quickly nerfed both ''Valkyrie'' and the boost it gives to the ''Caduceus Blaster'' while acknowledging that this wasn't how they envisioned the post-rework Mercy to play.
* OlderThanTheyLook: At 37 years of age, Mercy still looks very youthful.
* OmnidisciplinaryScientist: She's not only a surgeon and medical researcher, but also an expert in nanotechnology and nanobiology.
* OrphansOrdeal: "Valkyrie" shows that she's haunted by the loss of her parents, occasionally flashing back to her last memories of them from before and after they died. She empathizes strongly with the two children she rescues when she finds out their parents didn't survive Talon's attack.
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: She's not actually an angel, but her design and personality invoke the overall imagery of one, being a kindhearted and compassionate doctor who wears a powered suit of armor that makes her look like one. A theatrical teaser has her appearing to an injured child like an angel from heaven, compassionately reaching out a hand towards her.
* ParentalAbandonment: Her parents were among the many casualties of war.
* PoweredArmor: The Valkyrie suit allows her to reach allies in a short time and heal them efficiently. It also passively heals her when out of danger.
* TheQuietOne: She doesn't appear to be very chatty unless a medical concern is involved, and she spent most of her appearances during the lore's first year silent. In fact, if you don't count gameplay (which isn't canon), the "We Are Overwatch" teaser (which isn't story-driven), or her role in ''Junkenstein'' (which is technically not her, but a character in a story being told by Reinhardt), she didn't canonically speak ''at all'' until ''Uprising'', which was released over a full ''year'' after ''Recall''.
* RangedEmergencyWeapon: Mercy's job is to heal teammates, but you can also swap to your blaster if the situation desperately calls for it. It's a projectile-based sidearm, which unfortunately makes it rather hard to hit at longer range on account of having to LeadTheTarget. But t deals good enough damage, has no damage fall-off and has perfect accuracy, so much it may as well be a LethalJokeItem.
* RaysFromHeaven: In true [[IncrediblyLamePun angelic]] [[MeaningfulName fashion]], she arrives to heal an injured Mei in "Zero Hour" while bathed in gold light.
* RecurringElement: A fair-haired, benevolent and compassionate staff-wielding female character who opposes violence and advocates peace, only to be stymied by the belligerent nature of those around her. [[VideoGame/{{Warcraft}} Jaina Proudmoore]] says "hello."
* RegeneratingHealth: Mercy's health regenerates if she goes a second without taking damage.
* ReluctantWarrior: She abhors combat and violence, but is even more unwilling to stand on the sidelines and just watch people get hurt.
-->''I never wanted to be Mercy. It was something that was thrust upon me. The Valkyrie suit was to prove a point: that my technology worked. But I knew how other people saw me. How my teammates wanted me shoulder to shoulder with them.''\
''And so, little by little, Dr. Ziegler withdrew, and Mercy took her place.''
* SexyBacklessOutfit: Mercy's "Pink" skin has a deep back plunge.
* SecretKeeper: As of "Valkyrie", she knows that Morrison, Ana, and Gabriel are alive after the first two seek her out for medical assistance.
* ShipTease: With Genji. Both have special lines if the other dies and he is shown sending her a letter in the Christmas comic (though it isn't shown what is written in it). They also have special voice lines which are heard during White Day/Valentine's Day where they give each other chocolate.
* ShootTheMedicFirst: While this applies to all Heroes with the capability to heal others, Mercy is perhaps the most dangerous support to leave alive if she's on the enemy team, because her ''Resurrect'' can bring back a teammate (and more than one in previous iterations) within a short period of time. For these reasons, Mercy was initially the only character who calls out for help when she takes damage.
* SimpleYetAwesome: She's not the flashiest or most exciting to play of Supports, but her simple kit allows her to heal or boost extremely mobile members of the team other healers might not be able to keep up with, and her ''Resurrect'' can be game-changing when used right.
* SkillGateCharacters: Mercy is incredibly easy to pick up as she has a relatively simple kit. Her playstyle is also very forgiving, allowing players to get away with mistakes most of the time. At higher levels, playing Mercy requires great game sense and a different resurrection criteria because players in those levels are savvy to her tactics and will [[ShootTheMedicFirst focus her down.]] ''[[ShootTheMedicFirst Hard]]''.
* SmugSmiler: Very much PlayedForLaughs in one of her emotes titled "No Pulse" where she checks her own pulse before giving the most condescending smile possible to anyone watching.
* SquishyWizard: She uses healing and buffing abilities, with only a pistol and a quick melee for dealing damage by herself. While her health is average (and regenerates over time), she has no barriers or defensive abilities, and her mobility relies on the positioning of her teammates, not just herself. Mercy getting cornered alone by any other character puts her at a significant disadvantage.
* SuperMode: Her ''Valkyrie'' ultimate grants the ability to heal or boost multiple allies at once with her ''Caduceus Staff'', [[BottomlessMagazines unlimited ammo]] for her ''Caduceus Blaster'', the ability to fly freely at a relatively high speed, and uninterruptible health regeneration.
* SymbolicWings: Aside from her jetpack looking like a pair of wings, she has MercurysWings on some of her outfits.
* TeamMom: She takes a motherly attitude towards a lot of her teammates, often encouraging them to eat well, practice healthy habits and not excessively put themselves in danger.
-->'''Mercy:''' You've been doing a lot around Gibraltar, lately. Are you taking care of yourself?\
'''D.Va:''' I'm fine! I put in hours like this all the time back in Korea!\
'''Mercy:''' ''(Sighs)'' That's exactly what I'm worried about.
* TeenGenius: She was a teenager when she first met Overwatch and was already helping to pioneer new medical breakthroughs that would lead to the creation of her biotics technology once she earned her [=MD=] and [=PhD=].
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Do ''not'' underestimate the ''Caduceus Blaster''. While easy to dodge at long distances, it does great damage per shot (especially on a headshot) and boasts perfect accuracy, making it surprisingly lethal in the hands of a good Mercy, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb_FbI4hkfA as videos like these show]].
* {{Valkyries}}: Her "Sigrún" and "[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Valkyrie]]" skins are based off of this trope, complete with MercurysWings on the head.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: Her Summer Games 2016 skin "Eidgenossin" recolors her Valkyrie suit to a Swiss flag theme, and adds the white cross on her chest and back train.
* WhatTheHellHero: She expresses great disapproval with Ana for using her biotic technology in an offensive capacity.
* WhiteMagicianGirl: Her healing powers are entirely based on technology, but this trope still counts.

\
Equal parts brilliant and controversial, scientist Moira O'Deorain is on the cutting edge of genetic engineering, searching for a way to rewrite the fundamental building blocks of life.
\
Over a decade ago, O'Deorain made waves when she published a controversial paper detailing a methodology for creating custom genetic programs that could alter DNA at a cellular level. It seemed like a promising step toward overcoming diseases and disorders and maximizing human potential.
\
Dissent among her peers soon followed. Many considered her work to be dangerous because of its perceived ethical shortfalls, and O'Deorain was even accused of having the same unchecked desire for scientific advancement that some believed had caused the Omnic Crisis. In addition, other geneticists were unable to reproduce the results of Moira's research, which further called her discoveries into question. Instead of kickstarting her career, her paper seriously damaged her reputation.
\
She received a lifeline in an offer from an unlikely source: Overwatch's covert ops division, Blackwatch. She continued her work in the shadows while developing new weapons and technologies for the organization. Her employment was a closely kept secret until it was uncovered during inquiries following the Venice incident. Many high-ranking Overwatch officials disavowed all knowledge of her affiliation with them.
\
After Overwatch was disbanded, O'Deorain was forced to turn to unconventional sources of funding. This time, she was invited to join the scientific collective that had founded the city of Oasis. Yet some have whispered that the shadowy Talon organization had already been supporting her for years, aiding her experiments in exchange for utilizing the results for their own purposes.
\
Though O'Deorain will go to any lengths to make scientific breakthroughs, her work is still unknown to most of the world. But now that she has been freed from all constraints, it is only a matter of time before everything changes.
\
Moira is a Support armed with high area-of-effect abilities that alternate between potent healing for her allies and raw destructive power for her enemies.
* Her weapon is '''Biotic Grasp''', a twin set of gauntlets which unleash two distinct types of close-range beams. Her primary fire, '''[[HealingHands Regeneration]]''', releases a spray to heal allies (but requires a meter to use), while her secondary fire, '''[[LifeDrain Decay]]''', locks onto and continuously damages a single target, healing her and charging up her '''Regeneration''' much faster.
* '''[[EnergyBall Biotic Orb]]''' allows her to create two different types of rebounding orbs that can either heal nearby allies or damage nearby enemies.
* '''[[FlashStep Fade]]''', allows her to become invulnerable as she teleports a short distance in front of her.
* Her ultimate, '''[[KamehameHadouken Coalescence]]''', causes Moira to fire a gigantic laser in front of her that heals allies and can pass through barriers to damage enemies.
-----
* AirplaneArms: At least to others in-game, she trails her arms behind her when she runs. Oddly, playing her in first-person view has her palms in front of her for clarity purposes.
* AmbitionIsEvil: Her primary goal in a nutshell is for humanity to achieve peak evolution and has no problem testing out her theories on herself and others, regardless of the consequences.
* AnimalMotifs: Not nearly as much or as obvious as [=D.Va=] but Moira tends to be associated with rabbits in a few sprays and icons and is seen experimenting on one in her origin video. In this case it's used more as point of comparison as she's a predator attacking a weaker prey.
* AreaOfEffect: Like Lucio, Moira's healing (through ''Biotic Grasp's Regeneration,'' her healing ''Biotic Orb,'' and ''Coalescence'') has an area-of-effect. Unlike Lucio, however, her healing abilities cannot be used constantly (''Biotic Grasp'' has a resource meter that has to be replenished by doing damage or waiting, ''Biotic Orb'' will disappear after replenishing a set amount of HP and has a significant cooldown, and ''Coalescence'' is an [[LimitBreak ultimate]]). Additionally, her damage-based ''Biotic Orb'' and ''Coalescence'' provide area-of-effect ''damage.''
* ArmorPiercingAttack: ''Coalescence'' bypasses barriers like Reinhardt's and Orisa's shields, preventing them from protecting their teammates from the beam or stopping Moira's teammates from being healed by the beam. The only blockade it cannot pass is Mei's Ice Wall.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: When Mercy calls Moira out on her unethical research, Moira asks her if she can deny the breakthroughs and discoveries she achieved. Mercy cannot answer, as Moira predicted.
* BackAlleyDoctor: Has shades of this. Moira's main hurdle is that her methods were highly controversial in the field of medicine which made her an outsider and forced her to work in the shadows. In fact, she's brought into Blackwatch almost ''specifically'' because her illicit means could better aide Gabriel Reyes with his condition.
* BaddieFlattery: Despite her and Mercy not getting along for the most part, Moira is still impressed by Mercy's impressive intellect and even offers an invitation to Oasis, possibly in a Minister position.
-->'''Moira:''' I know we have our differences, but your brilliant mind would be welcome among my colleagues in Oasis.\
'''Mercy:''' No thank you. You and your colleagues discredit the field of science. I want nothing to do with it.
* BadPeopleAbuseAnimals: Implied. Her "Nervous" spray and "Coinin" player icon depict one of her lab bunnies looking concerned as if saying ThisIsGonnaSuck. On the other hand, there is a spray showing her [[PetTheDog seeming quite friendly with dogs.]]
* BecomingTheCostume:
** Her "Lilith" skin designs her after the namesake BigBad of ''VideoGame/DiabloIV'', and using the skin alters plenty of Moira's voiceover to invoke that of the (explicitly) sorcerous Daughter of Hatred.
** Her "Ancient Caller" skin changes her into that of a dark herald to an unseen eldritch force, changing many of her lines to fit the bleak, otherworldly theme, with several lines in specific revolving around [[MindRape breaking her enemies' minds]] to make them submit to [[EldritchAbomination the "dark ones"]].
* BerserkButton:
** Her tone gets noticeably more defensive and angrier ([[TranquilFury if still deadpan]]) when a fellow scientist or medic character questions her experiments.
--->'''Mercy:''' Describing your work as unethical would be a kindness.\
'''Moira:''' But the true question is whether or not you can deny my discoveries. ''(quiet pause)'' No. I didn't think so.\
\
'''Winston:''' Overwatch had good reason to shut down your research.\
'''Moira:''' I shouldn't be surprised at such a narrow opinion coming from a ''''[[PunctuatedForEmphasis jumped. Up.]] [[FantasticRacism Ape.]]''
** She also gets audibly impatient whenever [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Sigma]] starts going off on one of his aimless rambles, presumably because she's assigned with monitoring him and she's heard them all before.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: She has short hair, a rather angular face, a slim build, and a low voice. But what really puts it over the edge are the shirt and tie she wears in [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=6ETybQd4uRE&t=30s her origin story video]] and in some of her sprays. And then her "Glam" and "Moon" skins are pretty much knock-offs of Ziggy Stardust, {{Music/David Bowie}}'s most PrettyBoy stage persona.
* BigBadEnsemble: Is part of Talon's Inner Council, making her one of the principal antagonists of the setting alongside Reaper and Doomfist, without getting into Vishkar (who may or may not be connected to Talon through Sanjay), the God Programs, and the Conspiracy.
* BilingualBonus: She has several quotes in Irish.
* BlankWhiteEyes: Her "Banshee" Legendary skin for the 2018 Halloween Terror event gets rid of her pupils and irises entirely for white, vacant eyes.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: To Moira, if it helps scientific progress, it’s good. It's for this that she completely lacks any prejudice towards omnics; while she doesn't care about them (or many others) as people, she finds even the concept of prejudice woefully backwards and a limiting factor on the technology used to create them.
* BlushSticker: A look at her "Foundation" spray shows her child self had a pair of these. Noteworthy in that nearly no other younger versions of the heroes features this detail.
* BoyishShortHair: She has short and spiky hair that furthers emphasizes her {{Bifauxnen}} appeal.
* BrightIsNotGood: She uses the same bright yellow biotics technology used by Mercy and Ana to heal, but also weaponizes it similarly to Ana with her damaging abilities.
* ColdHam: Almost always speaks in a low and controlled voice but is still prone to some exuberant speech patterns and has quite expressive, dramatic body language.
* CombatMedic: While she doesn't have as high raw DPS as Zenyatta and her healing is stronger stat-wise, she has just as many options for damaging her enemies as much as healing her allies, usually making her pretty deadly in a one-on-one fight. In fact, her main weapon/healing option requires her to perform the former in order to do the latter, including healing herself. Her ''Biotic Orb'' in particular can be devastating against divers, especially in closed spaces.
* CoolMask: She wears a silver mask on her right eye that's slightly reminiscent of the one popularized in ''Literature/ThePhantomOfTheOpera''. Her Year of Rat Legendary dresses her in ogre themed mask dancer attire, reminiscent of the Talchum (탈춤).
* CripplingOverspecialization: Subverted; Moira's specialization is survivability and extremely powerful healing. However, this comes as a cost of her offers no other utility that can save teammates from extremely high burst damage or from abilities that nullify her powerful healing like Ana's ''Biotic Grenade'' or D.Va's ''Defense Matrix''.
* CreepyLongFingers: She has very long, crooked fingers. Along with her FemmeFatalons, it only makes her look more like an evil sorceress.
* DamageOverTime: Her weaponry doesn't do a lot of damage upfront, but she has ''infinite'' ammo and her ''Biotic Grasp'' is difficult to dodge unless you get out of range (which is difficult since it's quite long). This adds up to a lot of damage over time, so it's easy to get picked off by Moira if you aren't paying attention.
* DamnYouMuscleMemory: Suffers from a bit of a problem in console. Her healing abilities come from her left hand and are bound to Primary Fire, while her damaging ones come from her right hand and are bound to Secondary Fire. That's all fine and dandy for PC players, as those are bound to the left and right mouse buttons respectively, but on console, ''right'' trigger is bound to primary and ''left'' to secondary, resulting in a slight crossing of the wires until you either get used to it or change Moira's control scheme in the settings.
* DarkActionGirl: A villainous female fighter like her Talon teammates Widowmaker and Sombra, but she might actually have them beat in the "dark" department, given that she doesn't really have any sympathetic backstory to her. While Widowmaker was [[BrainwashedAndCrazy forced into evil by no choice of her own]] and Sombra was at least orphaned as a youth and later targeted by the Conspiracy, Moira is fully committed to scientific advancement, no matter the cost.
* DarkIsEvil: In addition to wearing an all black outfit, some of her attacks use dark energy.
* DeadlyDoctor
* DeadpanSnarker: She has an icy, classy sense of humor.
-->''(after killing an enemy)'' "Thank you for your contribution."
* DramaticallyMissingThePoint: Moira seems genuinely fond of her old teammates from Blackwatch, and tries to reminisce on old times. Including with the ones who are [[HeelFaceTurn now with the good guys.]] But she also seems completely unable to understand why things have changed, or why Genji and Cassidy hate her so much now.
* DrJerk: Moira is ''not'' the nicest person around, and if anything there are next to no characters who can get along with her. Precisely ''because'' of her methods as a doctor. Her dismissive and condescending responses when confronted over the matter don't help.
* DualityMotif: She has heterochromia, her [[{{Bifauxnen}} gender expression is very androgynous]] and she wields both the healing and decaying capabilities of Biotic tech. Her left arm is normal and is used to heal, while her right is full of TaintedVeins and is used to kill, and her ''Coalescence'' ult [[YinYangBomb combines the two.]] Further, she combined the aesthetics of a sorceress, but with explicitly [[MagicFromTechnology science-based powers.]]
* EarlyBirdCameo: She showed up on the Talon Council in Doomfist's "Masquerade" comic three months before her official reveal.
* EnergyBall: Her ''Biotic Orb'', which can be set either to heal or to hurt. The orb itself will perform its function by lashing energy tendrils toward its intended target, so its area of effect is significantly bigger than the orb itself.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Despite her EvilutionaryBiologist credentials, she bluntly criticizes the way the British government treats Omnics when she spawns on King's Row.
-->'''Moira:''' The government here has such medieval views towards omnics.
* EvilCounterpart:
** To Mercy. While Mercy is a kind-hearted doctor who seeks to save lives through ethical methods, Moira is more of a MadScientist who seeks to push the boundaries of what science can achieve. One of her experiments included Gabriel Reyes, who was at least partially responsible for turning Reaper's genetic problems into his so-called "curse". She even has her own Blackwatch version of the [[https://i.imgur.com/QhX2LiM.png Valkyrie suit]], which is notably RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver and features a headpiece that resembles curled horns in contrast to Mercy's [[GoldAndWhiteAreDivine brighter palette]] and [[HolyHalo angelic halo]], as well as being a reversed version of her halo. They also have [[https://78.media.tumblr.com/4380978d13dc1ba7abb062c3a3a87c8f/tumblr_oz0ozg8mhT1saswrso1_1280.png matching sprays]] of them standing back to back, as well as [[https://shipping.fandom.com/wiki/File:Light_and_Shadow.png another one]] where Mercy is looking up ("Light") and Moira is looking down ("Shadow").
** Also to Zenyatta. The Omnic monk uses his spirituality to help all and his abilities seem to be rooted in mysticism and exploiting the forces of harmony and chaos. Moira's abilities share the same color scheme and use of spherical shapes, but are firmly rooted in the setting's scientific achievements and she intends to advance her experiments regardless of what stands in her way.
* EvilGenius: Of the scholarly variety (EvilSorceror and MadScientist) in fact she EMBODIES this.
* EvilIsAngular: She's very sharp, both in character design and mental acuity, with a very pointy chin and prominent cheek bones; elongated, bony fingers; long, sharp nails; her sleeves have wide, flowing ends that taper at the bottom; her shoes are pointy with a few Spikes of Villainy on them; and when she runs, her arms trail behind her, turning her entire body into an arrow.
* EvilLaugh: Her laugh emote titled "How Amusing" is a rather [[NoblewomansLaugh haughty]] but nontheless mocking and cruel one.
* EvilMakesYouUgly: The hand she uses for killer biotic energy is paler than the other, has longer and sharper fingernails, and the tips of her fingers are a sickly purple.
* EvilRedhead: She has red hair and works for Talon. And if you check the page for that trope, traditionally red hair is supposed to be a mark of a witch, to add to her sorceress theme.
* EvilutionaryBiologist: She's noted as having an insatiable desire for human advancement, not unlike the scientists who helped start the Omnic Crisis. The City of Oasis noticed this and invited her to become their Minister of Genetics.
* EvilSorcerer: It's actually technology, but her powers are essentially MagicFromScience.
* EvilSoundsDeep: She has a distinctively low voice.
* {{Facepalm}}: One of her sprays shows her doing this, and she also has an emote of it.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Building off her DualityMotif, Moira wears a silver mask only over her right eye and in many of her legendary skins, her RedRightHand will bare a single glove or wrapping of some sort. She also has a habit of painting her nails on one hand a entirely different color than the other.
* FatalFlaw: '''Impatience.''' As elaborated on during many of her interactions in ''Overwatch 2'', Moira's dedication to scientific progress at any cost is so extreme that it has led her to resort to increasingly unsafe, unethical methods in search of ''a'' result, not necessarily the ''desired'' or ''optimal'' result that her patrons may want. She successfully revived Gabriel Reyes as Reaper, but whatever remained of his human form has been horribly disfigured, possibly beyond repair, and he's stuck in a rapid and painful state of cellular regeneration and degeneration. She transformed Amelie Lacroix into Widowmaker per Talon's orders in order to create the ultimate killing machine devoid of any feeling or emotion, but several lines of dialogue indicate that Moira failed to fully erase Amelie's original personality per Talon's intent, as Widowmaker has started to display much more self-awareness, having developed quite the ego taking pride in her skills as a sniper and learning to take some form of enjoyment in her new life while still reminiscing fondly about her old one.
* FateWorseThanDeath: Not Moira herself but she certainly has a talent for inflicting these onto ''other'' people. Whatever procedures she performed to keep Gabriel Reyes alive turned him into the dreaded and incredibly unhinged Reaper who is in a state of constant, immortal agony because of her experiments. Then there's the case with Widowmaker whose true persoanlity is suppressed but nontheless [[AndIMustScream self-aware]] of the monster she's been turned into.
* FemmeFatalons: To further her sorceress-like appearance. They look somewhat similar to Sombra's hacking cybernetics, though presumably are used quite differently.
* FingerTenting: Featured in both her "Steepling" victory pose and "Plotting" spray. "Plotting" itself is a ShoutOut to the famous "[[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Gendo Pose]]."
* FriendToBugs: Her "Foundation" spray shows her child self hapily analyzing a pray mantis, black widow spider, and a scorpion. One can only assume these are pets for the time being until they're sentenced to [[CreepyChild the jars of fluid the other creatures at her feet are submerged in.]]
* FlashStep: ''Fade'' looks this way, briefly making her untargetable and invisible before she reappears a short while later.
* ForScience: She's constantly seeking new advancements in genetics and biotics technology, regardless of whether or not it's used to heal or inflict grievous harm. Her origin story states that she doesn't like ''ethical'' restrictions, and turned to Blackwatch to move her experiments forward, and later joined Talon so that nobody could tell her what she can or cannot do.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Most of her interaction with former Overwatch and Blackwatch members are antagonistic. Even on her side, Reaper makes it clear that he isn't thrilled about his condition, which was largely Moira's doing.
* AGodAmI: When she really starts going on a tear she shows shades of this, along with a [[EvilLaugh maniacal cackle.]] Her catchphrase is even "Surrender to my will!"
* {{Goth}}: As it's the darker color swap of her "Glam" Legendary, her "Moon" skin encompass Gothic glam rock fashion akin to ''{{Music/KISS}}'' complete with black hair, black lipstick and nails, and a choker.
* GracefulLoser: Moira's respawn quotes are oddly humble, which is a huge contrast to her usually haughty demeanor.
--> "There was a flaw in my approach."\
"We all must make sacrifices in the name of Science."
* GradualRegeneration: While ''Biotic Grasp's Regeneration'' can be sustained for more potent burst healing, even a quick spritz will apply a temporary regeneration status buff to allies, allowing Moira to conserve her resources.
* HartmanHips: Not as obvious as others due to her choice of clothing but Moira's hips are noticeably more pronounced than the rest of her narrow physique. Her "Blackwatch" and "Scientist" skins especially highlight this.
* HealingShiv: ''Coalescence'' is capable of both healing allies and damaging enemies, although it's much more effective at doing the former.
* InkSuitActor: She bears a certain amount of resemblance to the actress playing her, [[http://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/dynamic/36/590x/monmothma-684156.jpg Genevieve O'Reilly]].
* InsufferableGenius: Very much so, especially around Cassidy who she deems BookDumb throughout most of ''Retribution''. She's generally very high and mighty about the benefits of scientific achievement, be it her own or others, and her flowery speech and victory poses always radiate a sense of pompous arrogance.
-->''(during a kill streak)'' "My keen analytical mind detects a pattern forming."
* {{Jerkass}}: She's smug, condescending, and snarky, seeming to look down on everyone around her and doesn't get along with a great majority of the cast, not that it seems to bother her.
-->'''Cassidy''': Hey there, Moira. How have you been?\
'''Moira''': Busier than you, I'd assume.\
'''Cassidy''': I missed you too. You look great, by the way.\
'''Moira''': Same saccharine tongue. [[BrainlessBeauty Same empty head.]]
* KamehameHadoken: ''Coalescence'' fires a large, continuous beam in front of her. In an interesting twist, it also functions as a HealingShiv.
* JumpScare: Does this in her "Boo!" emote where she turns her back and pretends to be walking away only to fade and make a face with her arms outstretched while a ScareChord plays.
* KickTheDog: She has a pre-game interaction with Mei that's... pretty brutal.
-->'''Moira''': Dr. Zhou, I'm interested in your colleagues' research into [[CryonicsFailure the long term effects of cryogenic freezing]].\
'''Mei''': Oh... well, yes, I'm sure... maybe... ''(sniffs)''
* KnightOfCerebus: Though many Talon operatives fit the bill fine, Moira is the only one who lacks a sympathetic backstory to justify her more wicked deeds. She's seemingly motivated purely by her ambition for scientific progress alone which leads to a commonly held belief that she was not only the creator of Reaper but possibly Widowmaker, putting the kidnapping, torture, and brainwashing of an innocent woman under her list of misdeeds.
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: Wears an especially long one in her origin video as part of her work attire. This was made into a skin during the 2019 Archives Event.
* LackOfEmpathy: As another huge contrast to Mercy whose defining strength can be her strong empathy for others, Moira lacks it entirely, [[ItsAllAboutMe only caring for her own personal gain]] and using her experiments to test the limitations of human kind to appease her own curiosity, no matter how badly she might screw someone over in the process.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: A [[MadScientist scientific variant]]. Moira is a villainess with no regard for ethical guidelines in the name of technological advancement, looks like a sorceress with a black robe and [[CreepyLongFingers witch-like fingers]], has offensive abilities which wield biotic energy that are highly reminiscent of magic, and conducts herself with an arrogant and aristocratic air.
* LeanAndMean: She's a morally dubious MadScientist and one of the tallest and thinnest humanoid female characters in the roster, even standing a few inches above some male heroes.
* LifeDrain: Moira's damaging biotic energy siphons the life energy from her enemies, healing herself and filling her biotic meter, allowing her to heal her teammates. This is demonstrated in one of her emotes where she releases some life-giving biotics with her left hand, then drains them away with her right hand.
* MadScientist: She's considered such by the populace at large, and she doesn't appear to deny it or care much. And on that note, she considers Reaper's condition to be a ''success''.
-->'''Moira:''' Your body seems to be adapting well to the changes, Gabriel.\
'''Reaper:''' You call ''[[BlessedWithSuck this]]'' well?
* MagicFromTechnology: Many of her abilities are basically this: she uses hand gestures to attack and use her abilities instead of any obvious weapons, teleports in a flash of shadow, and describes her weapons as "her will imposed on reality," a common description of magic.
* MeaningfulName: Deoradhain (anglicised as Deorain) is Irish for "exile".
* MechanicallyUnusualFighter: Her primary weapon(s) behave unlike any other in the game. Her actual damage comes from her secondary fire, which is a beam-type weapon that infinitely [[LifeDrain drains her enemy]] so long as her target is vulnerable, in range, and in her relatively small crosshairs. Her primary fire is a healing spray that's meter-based in lieu of an ammo/magazine system, recharging slowly over time, but filling much faster from using her secondary, [[CombatMedic necessitating she regularly use both]].
* NavelDeepNeckline: Her "Glam" and "Moon" skins have plunging necklines that go down to her stomach.
* NerdGlasses: Her "Foundation" spray reveals she wore a pair of giant, oval-rimmed glasses as a child.
* TheNicknamer: Back in Blackwatch, Moira rarely ever referred to Cassidy by name and would simply call him "cowboy".
* NinjaRun: Moira runs around the battlefield with her head tilted forward and her arms back with posture that would make ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' proud.
* NoblewomansLaugh: A short but suitably aristocratic one.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: She's very clearly supposed to take after Music/DavidBowie's Ziggy Stardust persona, which, coupled with her androgynous appearance, makes her resemble Creator/TildaSwinton. Her unlockable "Glam" and "Moon" skins makes it even more obvious.
* NoCureForEvil: Played with. Moira's healing is more potent than her damage, but what she lacks, in contrast with other supports/healers, are utility and buffs.
* NoBrows: Though it didn't make it to her final model, Moira's concept art has her lacking her natural eyebrows and instead the [[UnusualEyebrows two metallic black implants in her forehead]]. For sake of compromise, her "Glam" and "Moon" skins have her eyebrows completely shaved off.
* NoSocialSkills: More than once she's been shown to be so caught up in her own thoughts that she can't read social cues or understand what kinds of responses or topics are inappropriate. Her bringing up the cryogenic freezing with Mei is her most blatant example and during "Retribution" she takes Reyes' joke about anyone being hungry when they approach an outdoor restaraunt literally.
-->'''Gabriel:''' Am I the only one who feels hungry?\
'''Moira:''' That could be an unforseen side effect.\
'''Gabriel:''' I was making a joke...
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite having a [[DeadpanSnarker dry sense of humor]], Moira constantly presents herself as classy, dignified and is well convinced she's [[InsufferableGenius the smartest, most cultured person in the room]], but even she doesn't seem to be above pulling childish pranks as seen with her [[JumpScare "Boo!" emote.]]
* NotSoStoic: Despite how professional and composed she presents herself as, having to listen to Sigma's [[TalkativeLoon philosophical ramblings]] when she's trying to work quickly wears her patience thin.
-->'''Sigma:''' Can one know that one knows nothing? / If the universe is a simulation, why aren't there more elephant seals?\
'''Moira:''' ''(through gritted teeth)'' [[SarcasmMode It thrills me to put aside my preparations and humor your brilliant inquiries, Doctor. It]] ''[[SarcasmMode thrills]]'' [[SarcasmMode me.]]\
'''Sigma:''' [[SarcasmBlind Kind words. Thank you!]]
* ObviouslyEvil:
** To a perhaps even greater extent than Widowmaker and Reaper. Not only does she wear all black, but she looks and acts like an evil sorceress. She also lacks any sympathetic background, unlike Amélie and Gabriel.
** She even had this in her earlier days with Blackwatch. On top of her already then-controversial reputation, one has to wonder what they were expecting when she had a [[RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver red and black-colored]] ''devil''-themed Valkyrie suit.
* OddNameOut: Out of all the other playable Talon agents, she's the only one who doesn't have a code name.
* OlderThanTheyLook: The art style doesn't make it exactly obvious, but Moira is in her late forties, yet doesn't look older than 30.
* OurBansheesAreLouder: She has a "Banshee" Legendary skin for the 2018 Halloween Terror event.
* PetTheDog: Literally. One of her sprays shows her with pet dogs, seeming quite fond of them. Less literally, she also seems genuinely committed to science and considers discrimination against omnics medieval. Her respawn voicelines also indicate that, while she'll happily experiment on others, she accepts any personal sacrifices philosophically as well.
* PainfullySlowProjectile: Not as slow as Symmetra's ''Photon Projector'' orb, but Moira's ''Biotic Orb'' is fairly slow moving and can usually be sidestepped fairly easily to minimize potential damage [[DamnYouMuscleMemory (unless you try your first instinct and move backwards from the same direction, in which case it'll keep pace with you)]], but this also means that it's better at healing allies as it's easier to keep them close to the orb. Its ability to [[PinballProjectile bounce off walls]] further increases its healing and damage potential in tight spaces.
* PinballProjectile: A rather [[PainfullySlowProjectile slow-moving]] example, but her ''Biotic Orbs'' bounce off of nearby terrain, which can make closed, indoor spaces a blessing for allies with her healing orb or a terror for enemies with her damage orb.
* PowerFloats: She's capable of levitating for short periods of time while performing ''Coalescence''. While this makes sense with Mercy who has a stylized JetPack built into her suit, it's not implied Moira has one of her own or if it's perhaps one of the many results of her experiments.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Her damage orbs as well as the highlights of her suit are colored the same shade of dark purple.
* ProfessorGuineaPig: Her origin trailer shows her doing experiments on herself or at least applying her research to enhance herself. A couple of her sprays also show this, especially "Self Experimentation", which shows her fighting through the pain as her right arm suffers the effects of an injection.
* RedRightHand: The hand she uses for harming looks noticeably paler and sicklier than the one she heals with. Her [[ProfessorGuineaPig "Self-Experimentation"]] spray shows that her arm also has TaintedVeins.
* ReverseArmFold: Moira is a frequent user of this pose, as seen in her "Prim" victory pose and the ''Retribution'' opening cutscene.
* {{Sadist}}: If her ''Biotic Grasp'' lines are anything to go by, Moira seems to derive immense joy from the suffering of others, often times moaning in pleasure or commenting with malicious glee on how her opponent is decaying before her.
--> "Tell me how this feels."\
"Your body decays."
** ''Retribution'' all but confirms this as she's the only one who has a very satisfied look on her face upon taking out her share of guards and when [[spoiler: Gabriel shoots Antonio, setting off the alarm that triggers the plot]] she offers a very pleased smirk that heavily contrasts Cassidy's anger but even then that's small potatoes to her response to Junkrat offering to be her lab assistant.
--->'''Junkrat:''' You looking for a lab assistant? [[MadBomber I'm great with chemicals!]]\
'''Moira:''' Certainly. We should begin by testing your tolerance for pain.\
'''Junkrat:''' Uh what's pain got to do with science?\
'''Moira:''' Everything, [[TermsOfEndangerment my strange little friend.]]
* SkillGateCharacters: Arguably even more than Mercy. Moira can pump the heals like no other, she can easily self-heal with ''Biotic Orb'' or ''Biotic Grasp'', and ''Fade'' is a tremendously powerful 'get out of jail free' card at a ridiculously low 6-sec cooldown. What she lacks though, are game-''making'' or game-''changing'' abilities. ''Coalescence'' heal isn't going to keep your allies alive under heavy damage unlike ''Transcendence'', she has no ability to start fights like ''Nano-Boost'', and she doesn't have any tool other than healing to actually increase her teammates' survivability like ''Immortality Field'' or ''Armor Kit''.
* SmugSmiler: While the other supports have warm and inviting expressions in their icons, Moira's smile looks far more self satisfied than friendly. It's something of a default expression if she isn't glowering. At her worst, she has [[https://overwatch.gamepedia.com/File:MoiraOrigin2.jpg quite an unnerving]] SlasherSmile
* SquishyWizard: Zig-zagged. She is a 200 HP character with no armour or shields and can quickly fall to burst damage, but in a protracted duel, she can use ''Biotic Grasp'' and ''Biotic Orb'' to heal herself. Her ''Fade'' is actually one of the most powerful escape abilities in the game by now - after being patched, she can use it to escape stuns, letting her survive otherwise utterly lethal combos including some dreaded ultimates. Teams with good communications will call out when she has used ''Fade'' because she's borderline unkillable before it.
* TheSociopath: Tics off a few boxes and fits the traditional definition even more than the rest of her Talon pals. She tends to view most human life as disposable lab rats, even referencing to downed foes as "guinea pigs", and as shown with the creation of Reaper, has the power to inflict terrible fates that she deems scientific miracles. She also has a fairly obvious sadistic streak and is so goal-oriented and emotionally cold she seems blissfully unaware of how unlikeable it makes her. The only slightly noble personality trait she has thus far is her appreciation for Omnic life, but even that might be more of a passing fascination on understanding how their technology works more than genuine empathy.
* TheStoic: Moira possesses a near uncanny level of calmness no matter the situation, hardly ever raising her voice or thinking dire situations are the right time to make sarcastic commentary. She only truly shows any signs of agitation, [[TranquilFury albeit a very controlled and cold one,]] whenever her scientific methods are challenged by the likes of Winston and Mercy.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Technically ''everyone'' is on the receiving end of this [[TheFriendNobodyLikes when paired with her]], though this trope is in full force with [[{{Foil}} Mercy]] who she seems to have some history with, see BerserkButton.
* TokenEvilTeammate: She fits the villainous support role very well. Unlike most of the other villains, she completely lacks a sympathetic backstory and is written as a MadScientist bent on "improving" humanity in any way possible. Cassidy in particular thinks hiring her to Blackwatch was a ''terrible'' idea.
* UniquenessDecay: In the original game, she was the first and only character to have her primary fire be a healing ability and her secondary fire be her main source of damage - the inverse of almost every other character. ''Overwatch 2'', however, introduced several more characters with this quality (including Kiriko and Lifeweaver).
* VillainousCheekbones: She has distinctly angular features, befitting her "evil sorceress" design.
* VillainProtagonist: A bad guy narratively but is still a selectable player character.
* VisionaryVillain: She doesn't have any inherently "evil" motivations, and her overall goal is to improve humanity through genetic modification. Unfortunately, [[MadScientist she really doesn't care for things like ethics]], and she'll even be a part of [[NebulousEvilOrganisation Talon]] if it means she can continue her work.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Quite a few skins dye her hair from red to white including ''Pale'', ''Banshee'', and ''Ice Empress''.
* WickedCultured: On top of her aristocratic tone and NoblewomansLaugh, she expresses herself in a distinctively eloquent and well-spoken manner, often using flowery turns of phrase where simpler ones would have worked just as well. Her dialogue in ''Retribution'' upon reaching the museum shows she has quite the fondness for art and she shares Gabriel's fondness for elaborate costumes. On top of that, if she looks through the telescope on the Horizon map, she'll quote Creator/OscarWilde.
* WinterRoyalLady: Her ''Ice Empress'' skin invokes this complete with a fur trim, CoolCrown, and PrimAndProperBun.
* YellowPurpleContrast: Moira uses this color scheme with her abilites, with yellow being used for healing and purple used for damage.''Coalescence'' uses both healing and damage so her beam is both yellow and purple.
* YinYangBomb: She has a theme of mingled energies, opposing philosophies or ideas, healing and hurting, and her ultimate is an actual healing/damaging beam attack.

\
Zenyatta is an Omnic monk who wanders the world in search of spiritual enlightenment. It is said that those who cross his path are never the same again.
\
Years ago, following the Omnic Crisis, a group of outcast omnic robots experienced what they described as a spiritual awakening. They abandoned their preprogrammed lives to establish a communal monastery deep in the Himalayas. After many years of meditation on the nature of existence, they came to the belief that they were more than artificial intelligence and that, like humans, they possessed the essence of a soul.
\
Recognizing the spiritual equality they held with humans, the monks, led by the enigmatic robot known as Tekhartha Mondatta, sought to heal the wounds caused by the Omnic Crisis a generation earlier and bring humans and robots back into societal harmony. Their message was embraced by millions around the world, and they became global celebrities.
\
But one monk, Zenyatta, disagreed with this new direction. He believed that the way to repair the problems between humans and omnics was not through dogmatic teaching but through interpersonal connection and engagement.
\
Ultimately, Zenyatta followed his own path. He chose to leave the monastery and wander the world, helping those he meets to overcome their personal struggles and find inner peace. But, when necessary, he will fight to protect the innocent, be they omnic or human.
\
Zenyatta is a unique Support character who manipulates special Orbs to hinder enemies and assist allies.
* His '''[[EnergyBall Orb of Destruction]]''' is his primary weapon, where Zenyatta launches highly accurate, high-damage projectiles at his foes. They can be fired either individually, or charged for a rapid-fire attack.
* '''Orb of Harmony''' projects an Orb to an ally that heals them over time so long as the Orb is attached to them.
* '''[[DamageIncreasingDebuff Orb of Discord]]''', links an Orb to an enemy that amplifies all damage dealt to them. Both '''Orb of Harmony''' and '''Orb of Discord''' can only affect one person at a time, and require that Zenyatta keeps their targets in his line-of-sight. A marker will also appear for each Orb, allowing Zenyatta to detect discorded-enemies who are out of sight for a short time.
* His ultimate, '''[[EnlightenmentSuperpowers Transcendence]]''', causes Zenyatta to enter a transcendent state, disabling his attacks and abilities but making him immune to all damage, and constantly restoring the health of nearby allies so long as he remains in the state.
-----
* AllLovingHero: Zenyatta is willing to offer his sympathy and emotional support to almost anyone. That includes [[{{Jerkass}} Reaper]].
* AntiGravityClothing: His Orbs float in a circle around his neck and spread out to surround his whole body when he goes into ''Transcendence.''
* TheAtoner: He was originally part of a group of religious Omnics who sought to mend their negative public reputation brought on by the Omnic Crisis.
* BadassPreacher: Zenyatta's not only a friendly and philosophical monk, but is also very capable in battle.
* BalanceBuff: Very early on in the ''Overwatch 2'' closed beta, Zenyatta was seen as especially weak among Supports due to the reduction of Tanks -- in turn, meaty frontliners to bodyguard him -- in conjunction with his preexisting lack of mobility and self-peeling options. The beta's first balance patch addressed this by giving him a slight health increase and the ''Snap Kick'' passive, granting his QuickMelee increased damage and {{knockback}} to [[PunchedAcrossTheRoom give himself space from anyone trying to dive onto him]].
* BaldMystic: Although Zenyatta is a robot, his smooth round head is obviously meant to invoke this in the spirit of his Buddhist monk inspiration.
* BecomingTheCostume:
** His "Nutcracker" skin changes his ultimate callout to "Experience festivity!"
** His "Cultist" skin replaces many of his lines to be far more ominous and creepy, including changing his ultimate callouts to "Pass into the unknown..." and "Experience... nothingness..."[[note]]Changed to "Experience oblivion" a few days after the skin's introduction, but has since been changed back.[[/note]]
** His "Fastball" skin changes a few of his lines to resemble baseball slang, including "[[CallingYourAttacks Here's a little]] [[BoomHeadshot chin music]]" while tossing out ''Discord Orb''.
* BenevolentAI: He's an Omnic who seeks to find inner peace and help others, both human and Omnic, do the same.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Zenyatta is one of the most peaceful, zen characters in the game, and his mission is all about restoring peace between human and omnic, but he also has a startlingly vicious side. His sense of insight and gentle way with words [[WarriorTherapist that he uses to comfort and reassure those in need]] has also been spun into [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech briefly, but concisely deconstructing those with greater flaws]], and unlike the rest of the Shambali, he doesn't identify as a pacifist, considering violence an inadvisable, yet valid option. In gameplay, he's a very potent CombatMedic who's capable of healing his team, but he also inflicts heavy damage and debuffs to his enemies -- his ''Orb of Discord'' is built around exposing the target's darkest fears and thoughts right into their face.
* ChargedAttack: His secondary fire allows him to charge up his orbs, then fire a volley of up to 5 orbs with perfect accuracy.
* {{Cthulhumanoid}}: His "Cultist" skin turns him into a MechanicalAbomination with Cthulhu-esque robotic tentacles coming from his chin. Keeping with the theme, his orbs turn into ornate eyes. He also gets some exceptionally creepy voice lines like "Zenyatta is everywhere", "Listen to the whispers of madness" and "Be consumed by the shadows" to go with this look.
* CombatMedic: He has more of an emphasis on dealing damage than other Supports, and is often compared to a DPS hero with healing capabilities. His healing, ''[[DamageIncreasingDebuff Orb of Discord]]'' and ultimate are definitely handy, and his orbs deal respectable damage, are perfectly accurate, and don't suffer long-range fall-off [[DifficultButAwesome (though they require leading the target to hit consistently).]]
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: If he and Zarya are on the same team, Zarya will openly share her [[FantasticRacism Omnic-phobic]] suspicion of him with "I've got my eye on you, Omnic." Zenyatta instead takes this as a declaration of protection, and returns the favor by cheerfully saying "And I will watch your back in turn."
* CranialProcessingUnit: Shots to his head cause double damage just like any other character. This isn't just for the sake of gameplay, as the ''Alive'' short shows the similarly-designed Mondatta dying when Widowmaker shot him in the head.
* DamageIncreasingDebuff: The unique power behind Zenyatta's ''Orb of Discord'', which remains on his target unless switched onto someone else or they leave Zenyatta's line of sight. Considering the fact it marks the target pretty noticeably, an ally team will ideally want to prioritize melting them as fast as possible.
* DifficultButAwesome: His ''Orbs of Destruction'' are projectiles that require [[LeadTheTarget leading the target]] to hit consistently, he has no mobility options, and keeping track of his ''Orbs of Harmony'' and ''Discord'' can be difficult in the middle of a firefight... but he has enough firepower to shred most characters in seconds, his Orbs' effects allow him to be useful in nearly any situation, and his Ultimate is ''extremely'' potent[[note]]''Transcendence'' heals at a rate that can completely nullify multiple high-damage ultimates, including Pharah's ''Barrage'', Reaper's ''Death Blossom'', and others[[/note]] and can win games all by itself.
* DissonantSerenity:
** Always maintains a peaceful expression on his face and speaks like a holy saint even as he beats the stuffing out of his enemies. As a robot, [[EnforcedTrope he appears to be literally incapable of doing otherwise]].
** He encourages his teammates to "experience tranquility" while using his ''Transcendence'' Ultimate, even if they're in the middle of a team fight.
* EmotionBomb: Zenyatta's ''Orb of Discord'' is characterized as something akin to this, causing enemies to become mentally and spiritually vulnerable to negativity, in turn [[DamageIncreasingDebuff physically vulnerable to enemy damage]]. [[GameplayAndStorySegregation Devs have commented that this power technically doesn't exist in canon]] -- rather, it's an in-game representation of Zenyatta's more mundane ability [[BreakThemByTalking to cut down his opponents with some choice and insightful insults and exposing their self-doubt]].
-->"There is disquiet in your soul."\
"What torments you?"\
''(applying on Genji)'' "I know the doubts that plague you."\
''(applying on Symmetra)'' "Your distress betrays you, Satya."
* EnergyBall: His Orbs act as these in gameplay. In lore, orbs act for more mundane spiritual purposes, including an "Orb of Perception" used for meditation.
* EnlightenmentSuperpowers: His enlightenment has reached a point where he's able to enter a state of higher existence in his ''Transcendence'' ultimate, allowing him to heal close allies and negate all damage done to him by enemies.
* EyesAlwaysShut: His default expression, even though as an Omnic he was likely built to appear that way.
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: In his "Cultist" skin, he has green eyeballs on the palms of his hands.
* FriendlyRivalry: If Genji is on the enemy team, the two will treat their skirmishes like a sparring session.
--> '''Zenyatta:''' I win this round, Genji.
* FullContactMagic: When launching his orbs at enemies, Zenyatta punches and strikes with every Orb he sends out.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: The creative team has said his Orb of Discord and Orb of Harmony don't actually exist in the game's lore. They're a gameplay mechanic meant to represent Zenyatta's ability to point out enemies’ weaknesses while enhancing his allies’ morale through speech. In-game, the Orbs require line of sight to be applied and can also be applied to objects or people that probably wouldn't hear or be affected. One interaction briefly {{Hand Wave}}s this:
-->'''Mercy''': Zenyatta, I must admit, I do not understand how your healing works.\
'''Zenyatta''': And I do not understand much of how ''you'' heal, Dr. Ziegler. [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall I suppose we must all take some things on faith]].
* GentlemanSnarker: Is actually one of the most sardonic characters in-game, but it's hard to tell due to his way of speaking and attitude.
--> ''(after a final blow)'' Do not be discouraged. Everyone begins in ''[[StealthInsult ignorance]].''\
''(becoming "on fire")'' [[SelfImmolation I am on fire, but an extinguisher is not required.]]\
''(his team is running out of time)'' Time is an illusion, but the illusion is about to run out.\
''(Discorded by an enemy Zenyatta)'' I ''welcome'' adversity.\
''(spotting an enemy turret)'' A turret lies before us. It is quite real.
* GlassCannon: Between his ''Orb of Discord'', powerful primary attacks, and DifficultButAwesome charge attack, he's the deadliest of the supports, on part with some of the Offense heroes in lethality. However, with no mobility to escape dodgy situations, no ability to self-heal in combat, and a mediocre health pool, he's easy to kill.
* GoldenSuperMode: While ''Transcendent,'' Zenyatta radiates a golden light. His eye-dots become gold and he generates gold ethereal arms.
* GoodShepherd: He's working on a mobile ministry of helping others, be they flesh or mechanical.
* HitboxDissonance: Much like Hanzo, his projectiles have a ridiculous hitbox to make up for their travel time and low firing rate.
* HoverMecha: Sort of. He has legs but he doesn't use them, preferring to simply float everywhere like most examples of this trope. The only thing he does use them for is kicking people in his quick melee attack.
* HumansAreFlawed: He perceives humans as imperfect beings, a trait which he considers ''admirable'' and spiritually fulfilling in lieu of his and his brethren's forms as precise, calculatedly-driven omnics.
-->''"Perfect art is sterile. True art is like any kind of true thing... flawed, [[HumansAreSpecial and glorious]] because of those flaws. Just as we are."''
* IntelligibleUnintelligible: He has no problem understanding both Bastion and Wrecking Ball. Bastion is at least also an Omnic and their beeps could be some variation of an Omnic language, but his interaction with Wrecking Ball goes without the hamster's mech providing a translation and Zenyatta replying warmly regardless.
-->'''Wrecking Ball:''' *Squeaks*\
'''Zenyatta:''' Indeed my friend, indeed...
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Genji. He is fifteen years his junior, yet Zenyatta is the ''teacher'' in their relationship, though being an Omnic, he was effectively BornAsAnAdult.
* {{Irony}}: The gentle robot monk espousing understanding and ending violence between Humans and Omnics is the most damaging of the game's Supports and has an ability that increases ''discord'' within the target so that they take ''more'' damage.
* LevitatingLotusPosition: He moves around by floating in this position. As such, he does not make footstep noises.
* LiteralMinded: Played with. When he's "on fire", sometimes he says this:
--> '''Zenyatta''': I am on fire. But an extinguisher is not required.
* MartialPacifist: {{Subverted|Trope}} -- he definitely looks like he'd be this archetype, being a wise robot monk who prefers to help people but can kick ass when necessary. As it turns out, he has no qualms about the latter part and doesn't even bother identifying as pacifistic.
-->'''Soldier: 76''': In this world, pacifism is foolish.\
'''Zenyatta''': What makes you think I am a pacifist?\
'''Soldier: 76''': You sure talk like one.\
'''Zenyatta''': [[DeadpanSnarker Perhaps it is assumptions that are foolish.]]
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: He's a robot monk that travels by levitating in the lotus position and sends out orbs of energy that heal, cause, and amplify damage. Absolutely zero explanation is provided. Even medical geniuses like Mercy and Moira are puzzled, and it doesn't become any less of a mystery when they ask him about his methods.
-->'''Moira:''' I must know how your technology functions.\
'''Zenyatta:''' Existence is mysterious, isn't it?
* MeaningfulName: He's a monk, and his name is '''Zen'''yatta.
* TheMedic: Not to the extent of Mercy, but one of his abilities grants regenerating health to a single ally over a significantly long range, and his ultimate constantly heals every ally within range.
* TheMentor: To [[CyberNinja Genji]], having helped him find his peace and confidence after he was made into a cyborg. In "Stone By Stone", he also acts as one to Symmetra, being her closest guide in understanding the spirituality and faith of omnics.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: During ''Transcendence'', ethereal arms appear on Zenyatta, giving him a total of eight. He also has an emote where all eight arms do a round of applause and a fistbump.
* MultipleChoicePast: In ''Overwatch 2'', members of the cast can ask Zenyatta what he did before the Crisis, to which Zenyatta has multiple different responses from being a life guard at a water park to being a cashier at a laser tag arcade. If Genji or Ramattra are present, they just tell the other that [[MysteriousPast he never gives a definite answer]].
* MusicalThemeNaming: He and Mondatta take their names from Music/ThePolice's 1980 album ''Music/ZenyattaMondatta''.
* MysteriousPast: Zenyatta has an unusual tendency to obfuscate what he was up to before the Omnic Crisis, preferring to deflect it by giving innocuous-sounding, but [[MultipleChoicePast distinctly inconsistent answers]]. To further suggest that there's more to this omnic monk's past than he's leading on, the same conversation reveals that neither Genji (his pupil) or Ramattra (his former brother-in-arms) have any idea about Zenyatta's past as well.
* NiceGuy: He [[BewareTheNiceOnes mostly]] has nothing but kind words for all the other characters, even the most racist ones.
* NotSoAboveItAll: One of his emotes has him [[https://youtu.be/3OEVo8-so8g?t=13s blow a raspberry]].
* ObviousRulePatch: Most characters who have 150 total HP (the minimum) have some kind of gimmick or mobility option to make up for the inherent danger of being [[OneHitKill oneshotted]], but Zenyatta was the odd one out: his move speed is average, and his HP bar being mostly shields, while regenerating damage, does nothing to ''negate'' damage. This made Zenyatta ridiculously easy to kill, and because he's already a big case of ShootTheMedicFirst, it got to the point that even good Zenyatta players couldn't do anything. The developers' response was to give Zenyatta an extra 50 shield HP, making his regeneration gimmick more meaningful and giving the player a fair chance to fight back or flee after taking a heavy hit.
* OddFriendship: While he and Tekhartha Mondatta disagreed about the best way to achieve peace and equality between man and omnic, the two had enormous respect for one another, and Zenyatta mourns his brother monk's loss in several of his quotes.
* PowerFloats: He floats everywhere. While anti-gravity tech is shown to exist in the world of ''Overwatch'', Sigma comments that he has none -- [[EnlightenmentSuperpowers Zenyatta attributes this gift to The Iris]].
* ThePowerOfFriendship: Firmly believes in this, which got him into a disagreement with his fellow monks, who were using dogmatic teachings to restore the Omnics' reputation.
* ProverbialWisdom: Around half of Zenyatta's voice lines have him impart kind words of wisdom, even to those he eliminates.
* PunchedAcrossTheRoom: Or rather, "Kicked Across the Room". In ''Overwatch 2'', Zenyatta was given the ''Snap Kick'' passive, giving his QuickMelee increased bonus damage and sending any opponents hit by it flying, allowing him to repel anyone trying to catch him in close-quarters (i.e. [[SquishyWizard where he's most vulnerable]]). It's almost as strong as Lúcio's ''Soundwave''!
* RegeneratingHealth: This is basically what ''Transcendence'' gives to an ally. Any teammate within the ultimate's area of effect constantly regenerate health at 300 points per second, in essence making them virtually invincible for the entire duration. They stop at being "virtually" invincible since ''Transcendence'' does not prevent damage. If an ally being healed receives a single massive hit of damage in excess of their maximum health (e.g. Tracer's ''Pulse Bomb''), or if the enemy damage can outpace the healing itself (e.g. enemy damage enhanced by Baptiste's ''Amplification Matrix''), they would still die. Going out of bounds still kills Zenyatta or a player being healed as usual.
* RegeneratingShieldStaticHealth: Unlike the other characters, his health bar is 75% shield -- meaning that most of it regenerates quickly when he's not taking damage, making him hard to kill through attrition.
* ReligiousRobot: He comes from a group of robot monks that seem to follow a Buddhist-esque religion.
* {{Retcon}}: While everyone else from the first game only aged two years by the time of ''Overwatch 2'', Zenyatta's aged jump from 20 years old to 33. Previously, his age didn't seem like a major deal, but as of ''Overwatch 2'', Zenyatta is repeatedly given mentions of being active before the Omnic Crisis took place (something treated [[MysteriousPast as an important and mysterious story beat]]), which wouldn't make sense with his previous age as the Crisis took place about 30 years in the past.
* RobotWizard: Unlike Orisa or Bastion, some of his abilities cannot be explained away under ClarkesThirdLaw.
* RousingSpeech: In-universe, his Orb of Harmony amounts to a pep-talk or insightful comment that bolsters an ally's resolve.
* ShoutOut: His name and his friend Mondatta's are both taken from the name of an album by Music/ThePolice.
* SquishyWizard: His theoretical offensive output is high, and he has some very useful support abilities. However, his ability to absorb damage is poor, and even most of that comes from energy shields protecting his fragile mechanical frame.
* SupernaturalMartialArts: Although it's not clear if his powers are magical or mechanical, they're clearly meant to ''look'' magical. Mercy refuses to believe that he employs magic at all, insisting that there must be some logical reason as to how he operates.
* SupremeChef: "Stone By Stone" shows Zenyatta preparing a midday meal for pilgrims alongside the other omnic priests, and [[DeafComposer despite the fact he nor any other omnic are capable of eating or taste]], Symmetra finds it delicious. It turns out they give quite a lot of thought towards cooking and the theory behind it, using it as a means to understand and empathize with how humans perceive the world.
* TargetSpotter: His ''[[DamageIncreasingDebuff Orb of Discord]]'' is highly visible to his allies, allowing him to mark which enemies to focus down immediately.
* TheSneakyGuy: Not designed to be, but since he hovers, you can't hear his footsteps and his orbs are less noisy than most of the other character's weapons.
* ThreatBackfire: Zenyatta's on the passive side of one, either not understanding or willfully disregarding Zarya's [[FantasticRacism distrustful warning.]]
--> '''Zarya:''' I've got my eye on you, Omnic.\
'''Zenyatta:''' And I will watch your back in turn.
* UnorthodoxReload: Doesn't get much more unorthodox than a brief meditation to recharge your flowing spheres.
* VSign: One of his victory poses.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Zenyatta wears loose pants and a sash, but no shirt to speak of.
* WalkTheEarth: This is what he was doing after he separated from his fellow monks, personally helping humans and Omnics alike through good deeds whenever he could.
* WarriorMonk: He may be a Buddha-style ReligiousRobot, but he's ''far'' from being a pacifist.
* WarriorTherapist: Depending on who he eliminates, Zenyatta offers words of advice to his opponents. For example, he warns both Tracer and Lúcio that if they run too often they'll overlook things. He was also instrumental in helping Genji find peace following his robotization. This is actually how his Orbs of Harmony and Discord work in-universe. They're not magic or Biotic tech. He's using insight and speech to bolster his allies while demoralizing his enemies.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: He used to be close to Ramattra during his time in the Shambali, but their friendship broke apart following his decision to split and take a much more destructive path with Null Sector. In the present day, the two do have residual signs of their former brotherhood, but ultimately find themselves too divided philosophically regarding human/omnic relations to become anything more than enemies.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Chronologically 20 years yet he has the wisdom and temperament of someone far older than himself. Notably, his disciple was Genji (who is 15 years his senior and lived a playboy lifestyle he was younger) and he guided him to come to terms with his cybernetic augmentations during his existential crisis.
* YellowPurpleContrast: The ''Orb of Harmony'' is yellow and heals his team, wheras the ''Orb of Discord'' is purple and makes an enemy combatant more subsceptible to damage.
* YinYangBomb: Zenyatta controls both the ''Orb of Harmony'', a healing sphere colored gold, and the ''Orb of Discord'', a debilitating sphere colored [[PurpleIsTheNewBlack purple]]. His "Harmony and Discord" intro shows this best where he's seen holding both of them at once.
* YoungerMentorOlderDisciple: He serves as the mentor for Genji who is older than him.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: He is actually the third youngest member of the cast, being 20 years old, but his wise personality and deep voice make him seem older. Of course, being an Omnic, he was functionally BornAsAnAdult. He may be 20 years old chronologically, but he has the mindset of someone older.
