!The Main Three

The three central protagonists of the story.

[[folder: Pug]]

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_e61c2cf3af5b37aca9f082c5dc52d4ed_149c11ed_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350: ''[[AllLovingHero Yeah, I believe in people who, I believe, believe in love.]]'']]
->''"Making pacts, revealing universal truths, pranking the pope, seeing the mortal world you guys are always chattering about...Yeah, that's where I need to be."''

A small yet very ambitious Imp from the circle of Pride. Pug dreams of nothing more than to become a tempter in the mortal realm, mostly so that he can see the world. While not the sharpest tool in the shed, he makes up for it with boundless optimism and curiosity, as well as unshakable loyalty to the very few friends he makes.
----
* AffablyEvil: Even when torturing a damned soul, Pug still tries to have pleasant conversation with it. In fact, there isn't really a bad bone in this demon at all.
* AllLovingHero: Despite being a monster who tortures damned souls for a living, Pug is as cordial and affable as they come, seeing the good in just about every being he comes across. He even says himself that he must love everyone if love is all about hearing other's problems.
* BlitheSpirit: It's his cherry disposition that convinces Matilda and Alichino to help him ascend.
* {{Determinator}}: NOTHING is able to stop Pug from his quest. [[spoiler: This ends up being essential to the victory over the intruders, as it's his resolve that emboldens him to succeed in getting to Heaven before everyone else manages to.]]
* DistressedDude: Gets eaten by Valac before Matilda and Alichino rescue him.
* DumbIsGood: Pug's total naivete and simple desires make [[spoiler: getting to Heaven and negotiating with God a cakewalk for him.]]
* TheHeart: As made most evident when [[spoiler: Matilda and Alichino are on the verge of rejecting the mission to Heaven,]] Pug keeps everyone's heads up high with his supremely friendly attitude and ability to identify everyone's strengths, as well as his pure determination.
* GenkiGuy: Gets impressed and excitable by just about everything.
* MagneticHero: Pug's friendliness nets him two very supportive companions, [[spoiler: and helps motivate them and Mephistopheles to take the trek to Heaven.]]
* NiceGuy: One of the nicest demons you'll ever find.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Pug only once gets really angry with his friends when they [[spoiler: deem the trip to Heaven impossible.]]
* PunchClockVillain: Pug could only be called an evil creature because he's a demon and not much else. All he wants is to see the world, meet new people, and reach new heights as a tempter.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Matilda]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_11a8896192e6a75b30d47687e590d4b3_959bb3e8_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''[[Music/FionaApple But he's been pretty much yellow, and I've been kind of blue, but all I can see is red, red, red, now what am I gonna do?]]'']]
->''"There's no real pleasure to be had here. Just lighter shades of misery."''

A succubus from the circle of Lust, and the second friend Pug makes. Once a temptress of great renown, she fell on hard times before falling in love with a mortal man in the 20th century. After his time was done, she was disgraced by Hell and demoted, never to see her husband again. Obviously, this has put a bit of a damper on her personality, but not enough for her to not lend Pug her assistance.
----
* BrokenBird: Once the cream of the crop amongst temptress demons, she now lives a miserable live in Dis as a laughingstock for the other succubi.
* IChooseToStay: [[spoiler: Stays in Hell to help out the souls who aren't ready to ascend yet, though she promises that she'll return to see her husband.]]
* KnightInSourArmor: Despite all of her hardship, she doesn't take a lot of convincing to go along with Pug's quest, and remains supportive throughout.
* TheLostLenore: Her husband is all the way in Heaven while she's stuck in Lust. [[spoiler: They thankfully reunite when she visits Heaven.]]
* LoveRedeems: Her affair with her husband made her into a much better person at the cost of her job.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: Her husband died a while ago, and she couldn't follow his soul to Heaven due to her being a demon.
* Really700YearsOld: Matilda was born around the time of the Fall, making her eons older than the mortal she fell in love with. Then again, time is rather meaningless to demons.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She wasn't looking for love, but she found it anyway in the form of a very nice guy.
* SuccubusInLove: During a low point in her career, Matilda fell in love with a slightly troubled but nonetheless kindhearted and sincere mortal. This ended up causing her a few problems later down the line, but she still longs for him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Alichino]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_1ad3301ea6803ef427d79b88a2f1d96b_5e845763_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350: ''[[VideoGame/LeagueOfLegends ''Come on, shoot faster, just a little bit of energy yeah, I wanna try something fun right now, I guess people call it anarchy!]]'']]
->''"I, Alichino, Marquise of the Malebolge and officer of the Malebranche, fifth in command to Prince Abbadon, will gut any fool who dares impede my Pug's path!"''

A high-ranking Marquise of the Malebranche, Abaddon's army in the circle of Wrath. This harlequin-like demon is Pug's first companion, albeit due to her thinking she owns him after he erroneously gives her his name. Her bloodlust is only matched by her desire to cut down anyone who dares lay a hand on her beloved Pug, but in a place like Hell, such fury might be necessary.
----
* BloodKnight: Like the other demons in the Malebranche, Alichino lives for war, and will choose violence at every opportunity.
* CaptainErsatz: Her name and status as a demon of Wrath are based off a minor demon from Literature/TheDivineComedy, except that the gender is swapped, and the design is much more akin to what the namesake roughly translates to.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: According to her, she was a rather small and disappointing Throne during the Fall. Now, she's one of the strongest demons in the Malebranche.
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler: Climbing up Purgatory causes her to reflect on her violent ways, as well as all the times she demeaned others for not being as strong as her. It's so overwhelming it causes her to cry a lot.]]
* HugeGirlTinyGuy: The huge girl to Pug's tiny guy.
* MeaningfulName: As noted in the story, her name is a rough translation of the Italian word for harlequin, Arlecchino.
* MonsterClown: Alichino resembles a harlequin jester, albeit the clothes are a part of her body, and the typical jester hat is actually an extra set of eyes and horns.
* MightMakesRight: Is very dismissive of any demon who can't put up a fight for a while.
* MyNameIsInigoMontoya: Expect her to give her entire credentials every time she either meets someone or is threatening them. Just look at the quote above for an example.
* RescueRomance: Her rescuing Pug from Valac causes him to start falling for her.
* TearsOfRemorse: [[spoiler: Coming to terms with her sins wracks her with guilt, causing her to sob uncontrollably as Raphael comforts her.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Her most endearing trait is her total devotion to Pug, saving him many times and always being the first to take his side on things.
* {{Yandere}}: After being given Pug's name, she decides she's entitled to have Pug for herself like some pet, and follows him almost everywhere. She gets better, her obsession becoming genuine love.
[[/folder]]

!The Princes of Hell

The seven Archdemons who rule over the seven circles of Hell. Once united in their cause to overthrow Heaven, they were cast down and mutated into monsters by their sin. They abandoned each other to rule their own respective areas for the next many eons.

[[folder: Lucifer]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_7ec8b716f9c060eb475a40f5bc023b02_e84db6a3_2048.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''[[Music/NickCave You're one microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan, designed and directed by his red right hand.]]'']]
->''"I might be just one demon, but I'm the one demon you should ever worry about."''

The former leader of the Princes, and the Archdemon of Pride.
----
* AnimalMotifs: He has the look of a humanoid serpent, fitting for a being representing pure satanic evil.
* TwentyFourHourArmor: He always has his intimidating armor on. [[spoiler: He only takes the helmet off at the very end.]]
* BigRedDevil: His skin and his armor is mostly a deep crimson red, fitting for the worst demon of all.
* BreakTheHaughty: [[spoiler: Getting eaten by the main Intruder and imprisoned in its body causes him to openly admit to whoever listening above that he was a terrible leader who should have thought better than to assume he was always right. Heaven rewards his repentance with the power to keep fighting and save his realm.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: While their relationship is incredibly strained, he does care for his daughter Lilith, [[spoiler: as well as her mother, Paimon. They become his biggest priority when he's breaking the other demons out of the main Intruder.]]
* FallenAngel: Once an Archangel named Lucifel, one rebellion later and he's down in Hell, mutated by his sin into a monstrous demon.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He appears charming and cordial at first, but then quickly reveals just how sadistic and spiteful he can be to both sinners and demons who cross him.
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler: It takes getting he and his entire army taken by the main intruder for it to dawn on him that he's a lousy person and an even lousier leader. The Heavens bless him for his repentance.]]
* ItsAllAboutMe: As befitting the Prince of Pride, there's rarely ever a moment where he isn't making everything about himself and his grudge with Heaven. He's even frozen the worst sinners to act as his audience when he one day rises to retake Heaven. [[spoiler: It's this "I'm always right" mindset that really bites him in the ass later on.]]
* IWasQuiteTheLooker: The chapter detailing his rebellion states how Lucifel was very beautiful even by seraph standards, with his red skin and golden hair. All of that was lost the moment he fell.
* JoustingLance: His weapon of choice is a huge lance that he wielded back during the Fall.
* {{Pride}}: His sin, and also his FatalFlaw. In fact, out of all the sins embodied by the other Princes, he has it the worst. He's such an egotist that he didn't even notice his own tail freezing in Cocytus, and he assumes that he's right about everything despite even his fellow demon's words to the point of [[spoiler: convincing most of Hell and even himself that the Intruders were either sent by or destroyed Heaven.]] It takes [[spoiler: losing badly to the main Intruder to break him out of his pride, thus allowing Heaven to bless him with the ability to save the day.]] That being said, he's not totally prideful enough to not ask his fellow Princes to get his tail out of the ice.
* {{Satan}}: While Mephistopheles has this moniker, he fits the narrative connotation of the word, being a FallenAngel who rules over all of Hell with an iron fist.
* TheRightOfASuperiorSpecies: His whole rebellion got started when he raged at how God had created and apparently valued the human race, in spite of the supposed perfection of Heaven's inhabitants.
* SnakesAreSinister: His entire lower body has been replaced with that of a huge serpent.
* SkewedPriorities: It's more important that he and the other demons [[spoiler: are convinced that the eldritch horrors at Hell's doorstop are from Heaven. Any other truth can go away.]]
* ThatManIsDead: During his fight with Michael, he renounced his title as Lucifel, trading it for a name that didn't mean "light of God" anymore.
* VillainHasAPoint: When called out for [[spoiler: twisting the news about the Intruders into a flimsily-evidenced attack from Heaven]], he justifies it by stating how the demons will rally much quicker against an old foe as opposed to a new random one.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Abaddon]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_9dede19b233fcf55a7b27f9f7bd94dac_0c246136_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''[[Music/TransSiberianOrchestra So let me know, have I been clear, that I will magnify each cut and every bruise and every single childhood tear.]]'']]
->''"They wounded us, and we did not return the blow. There can be no peace until we repay them measure for measure."''

The rage-fueled warrior of the Princes, and the Archdemon of Wrath.
----
* AFatherToHisMen: Say what you will about his opinion on other demons, but he has great pride in his army, and is distraught when [[spoiler: they're picked off one by one by the Intruders.]]
* AnimalMotifs: He has the horns and legs of a ram, a rather stubborn and battle-ready creature.
* BadassBoast: Has several befitting the commander of Hell's finest army. "Retreat is not in our vocabulary!"
* BloodKnight: He and the rest of his demons live for battle, and leap at the opportunity to [[spoiler: face the Intruders by themselves. It backfires horribly.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He cares deeply for his two daughters Draghignazzo and Malacoda, and will gladly drop everything to assist them.
* GeneralRipper: As the leader of Hell's biggest army, he relishes in causing death and destruction wherever they go.
* HumanPincushion: He still has the sword of Gabriel lodged in his chest. It causes him near-constant pain, adding to his anger.
* LodgedBladeRecycling: [[spoiler: After finding the resolve within himself to keep fighting for his demons and especially his daughters, he pulls Gabriel's sword out of his chest, and uses it to cut apart the main Intruder's insides.]]
* MightMakesRight: Views his fellow Princes as being pathetic and beneath him due to not being as strong as he is.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: His maw is full of long, razor-sharp fangs.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler: The disastrous fight between his army and the Intruders causes him to order a retreat for the first time, causing him no end of pain.]]
* {{Wrath}}: As this is his sin, the word 'calm' just isn't in his vocabulary at all. Everything he says and does is full of contempt at best and outright berserker rage at worst.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Asmodeus]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_638f6d4d5666ec11534f1abb085e5263_7415a429_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''[[TheHedonist It's a lovely show, with fire and explosions, we are sure you will all be charmed to death.]]'']]
->''"Pleasure cannot be obtained in full, and without it there is no paradise."''

The carefree hedonist of the Princes, and the Archdemon of Lust.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Befitting the great demon of lust, he has features of animals that are associated with raw sexual power, like roosters, goats, and cattle.
* {{Asmodeus}}: Like the original myth, he's a large three-headed Archdemon whom embodies the sin of lust. He even has features often seen in early depictions, such as the body parts of animals associated with sex, as well as his own personal harem.
* CompensatingForSomething: [[spoiler: In truth, his lower regions are so shrunk that they can be tucked into his crotch without being noticed. Because of this, he tries to make up for it with a huge codpiece and his hedonistic life, none of which makes him feel better.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He does like his harem, each member for different reasons. [[spoiler: Remembering them helps him escape the main Intruder with Beelzebub.]]
* ExtremeOmnisexual: Regardless of species or gender, Asmodeus has [[ReallyGetsAround laid with them all]].
* FreudWasRight: His tail looks a lot like a veiny...well, you know.
* GagPenis: His codpiece is enormous, implying he's got one of these. [[spoiler: He doesn't at all.]]
* TheHedonist: All he cares about is getting drunk, high, and having sex. Because of this, the city of Dis is one of the most poorly managed areas in Hell.
* {{Lust}}: His sin. He revels in the pleasures of the flesh, constantly getting drunk and doing drugs and, most of all, having lots of sex. [[spoiler: It's all to make up for his reduced lower parts.]]
%%* ShipTease: With Beelzebub.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Beelzebub]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_0e3ba35b051f3be3b25d18f074736cfb_c88f3fe6_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''[[Music/TheyMightBeGiants Couldn't we just put away the ancient history, throw up our hands at the unsolved mystery?]]'']]
->''"You cannot understand the pain of lacking Heaven until you have been there yourself. I have lost it for countless eons, yet still I can remember the taste of its eternal bliss on my tongue."''

The silver-tongued Lord of the Flies, and the Archdemon of Gluttony.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: The chapter [[TitleDrop "No Sympathies"]] is all about the time he possessed a girl and foiled an exorcist, while at the same time demonstrating why he and his fellow demons hate humans so much.
* AnimalMotifs: Flies, obviously.
* {{Beelzebub}}: Right down to being the ruler of Gluttony, this is a very faithful depiction of the Lord of the Flies.
* DemonicPossession: He made a habit of possessing people back in the day [[spoiler: in order to feel the pleasure of eating and tasting again.]] One chapter is dedicated to the time he possessed a girl, and it isn't pretty.
* DragonsAreDemonic: Has very draconic features alongside insectoid ones.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He has a lot of fondness of his Dukes...except Valac.
* MetaphoricallyTrue: His ability to tell the truth while maintaining demonic bias is seen mostly when he's being interrogated by the exorcist, slowly but surely coercing him into giving him the benefit of a doubt.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives one to Mammon, calling him out for talking of the need for progress, and yet having achieved nothing except for what's in his mines and estate.
** In a later flashback chapter, he derides humanity as a whole for having what demonkind can never.
* RedBaron: The Lord of the Flies.
* SenseLossSadness: [[spoiler: When he became an Archdemon, he lost his ability to taste, causing him to lash out and cover his circle in excrement and disease. Afterwards, he tried possessing people to feel taste again, but it was only a temporary fix. Now, he's all but given up on feeling the sensation again.]]
%%* ShipTease: With Asmodeus.
* SkullForAHead: His head looks disturbingly like a human skull, albeit with blue scales all over.
* VillainousGlutton: Eating is one of his biggest obsessions, as gluttony is his sin. However, [[spoiler: this mostly stems from how he's lost the ability to taste, and is desperate to feel that again.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Mammon]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_cf165de80f162f9792fb987705254c9c_92fc8892_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''[[Music/TheyMightBeGiants I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage, called the blood of the exploited working class.]]'']]
->''"I'm trying to make some progress, but you would rather moan and complain instead!"''

The ambitious visionary of the Princes, and the Archdemon of Greed.
----
* AllForNothing: His efforts to make something in Hell are all destroyed when [[spoiler:the Intruders cause Sheol to crush his city of Pandaemonium and destroy most of his riches]].
* DragonsAreDemonic: His appearance is that of a huge dragon with wolf-like features.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He considers Mulciber as his best friend as well as his top supervisor. [[spoiler: So much so that it motivates him to keep fighting within the main Intruder.]]
* {{Greed}}: His sin, as demonstrated by his ridiculously large amount of baubles and rings and jewels coating his body, as well as his obsession with his wealth.
* {{Mammon}}: As one might guess, he's the embodiment of avarice, and is coated in riches. He's a lot more monstrous-looking than most interpretations.
* OnlySaneMan: Surprisingly, he's the most aware of how the Princes must stay united, and is the only one interested in trying to make Hell a less unbearable place. Well, at least less unbearable for him.
* SavageWolves: His head looks a lot like a draconic wolf.
* SkewedPriorities: He's way more interested in polishing his riches and getting more out of the mines than actually making Pandaemonium a halfway-decent city.
* VisionaryVillain: His dream is to create something that rivals the splendor of Heaven via his city of Pandaemonium. It only ends up half-complete due to him being distracted by his greed.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Belphegor]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_e40535ce091d1e904e5c8bc5078ca6db_1dafbb72_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''[[Music/JohnnyCash And the mercy seat is waiting, and I think my head is burning, and in a way I'm yearning, to be done with all this weighing of the truth.]]'']]
->''"The only way to keep our punishment from growing is to stop acting, for every attempt at rebellion -- from war to misguided attempts at self-improvement -- is just an invitation for more suffering."''

The lethargic do-nothing of the Princes, and the Archdemon of Sloth.
----
* TheEeyore: Everything out of his mouth is about how futile everything is, as well as how stupid his fellow Princes are.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Never once opens his eyes. WordOfGod once made a post that implied that they're actually big anime eyes, but that was probably a joke.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: His throne looks almost exactly like a toilet seat. Quite fitting, as the earliest depictions of Belphegor have him sitting on an actual outhouse.
* LeanAndMean: He's a condescending demon Prince, and he's skinny as a rail. In fact, his body is constantly going through atrophy due to his laziness.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler: the Intruder invasion causes him to be literally dethroned, forcing him to use whatever strength he has left and join the other Princes.]]
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Is always seen on his mobile throne, doing next to nothing.
* PerpetualFrowner: Almost never smiles, or emotes for that manner.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Likes giving these to his fellow Princes, but he gives a pointed one to Lucifer right before Hell's last stand, stating that he sounds like God with his pompous arrogance and demand to always be right.
* {{Sloth}}: His sin, making him unwilling to do anything about any situation.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Sheol]]

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_897608620f8f0350a193af2bceae39ae_f769413c_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''[[Music/WeirdAlYankovic Why does this always happen, why does this always happen to me?]]'']]
->''"They've got so much stuff! I want that! I want paradise! You want me to be happy with this?! We've got a ball of dirt!"''

The great leviathan who opens up the portal between Heaven and Hell with his mouth, and is both the Archdemon and the very circle of Envy.
----
* DumbassHasAPoint: Calls Lucifer an idiot for [[spoiler: assuming that the Intruders are from Heaven when HE was there to witness their arrival.]] Later, he calls Mammon out on chasing gold instead of making improvements to Hell like he promised.
* EvilIsBigger: He's a sinful demon who's bigger than all of the others combined.
* ExtraEyes: He's got eyes all over his body so that he may gaze at what he can not have easier.
* GreenEyedMonster: He wouldn't be the Prince of Envy if he weren't one both figuratively and literally. The entire reason he's the topmost circle is because he gazes at Heaven, longing for it again.
* HotSkittyOnWailordAction: At one point, he reveals that he was once in a relationship with a demon named Forneus, but they had to break up because he was so much bigger than her. [[spoiler: Post CharacterDevelopment Lucifer asks him to maybe try again.]]
* {{Kaiju}}: Sheol is so huge he constitutes as a circle of Hell just by existing.
* NoIndoorVoice: Is almost always shouting about how awful his life is.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives a VERY bitter and accurate one to Mammon [[spoiler: within the main Intruder]], ruthlessly chastising him putting his greed over making anything in Hell better like he oh so loved to prattle about. It actually causes Mammon to realize that he's been in the wrong for a very long time.
* SizeShifter: Sheol can shrink himself down to size, but he hates doing it, dramatically stating how painful it is.
* SnakesAreSinister: He's a demonic great flying serpent with a huge mouth like an anglerfish.
* ThinkingUpPortals: His mouth can open up a portal in-between Hell and the mortal realm.
* {{Wangst}}: Everything out of his mouth is some form of complaint or wailing about how unfair everything is, and how he wishes he had what's up in Heaven again.
[[/folder]]

!Demons of Pride

[[folder: Mephistopheles]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_d5d1ec6757ef822c40cc4ac8c22e941e_b607d2f1_1280.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''[[Music/TransSiberianOrchestra His voice, it had a certain charm, that concealed all his disease, as he introduced himself to him, as thee, Mephistopheles.]]'']]
->''"To live is to think and scheme. To live is to act."''

The first demon to manipulate humanity into committing sin, and the boss of all the imps in Pride.
----
* BadBoss: While he presents himself as a ReasonableAuthorityFigure, it's hard for him to hide the contempt he has for the demons below him.
* {{Mephistopheles}}: The master tempter himself. In this interpretation, he was the first to tempt Cain into killing his brother, [[spoiler:although it turns out that would have happened without his intervention]].
* {{Satan}}: Presents himself as such to Cain, though Lucifer is the one who rules all.
* TokenEvilTeammate: [[spoiler: Alongside Pug, Matilda, and Alichino, he's sent to message God in Heaven. Naturally, he's the least trusting of the realm and its inhabitants.]]
* VillainousBSOD: [[spoiler: Hearing from God that mankind would have discovered sin without him ''and'' that he inadvertently helped them by showing them what not to do causes him to briefly lose it, much to Matilda's amusement.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Lilith]]
->''"Everyone here is loyal to my dad. I want someone who's loyal to me."''

Lucifer's rebellious daughter, whose mother is unknown.
----
* DatingWhatDaddyHates: Fell in love with Samael, a demon from Envy. As far as Lucifer was concerned, everyone outside of Pride couldn't be trusted with her.
* HatesTheirParent: Clearly does NOT have any respect for her father, whom she views as an arrogant blowhard who never listens to her. [[spoiler: It's only when he comes to her and everyone else's rescue that she changes her mind.]]
* {{Lilith}}: True to her origins, she is a demonic woman, though she does not embody Lust or is even associated with the tale of Adam and Eve like a lot of stories. Here, she's merely Lucifer's daughter.
* RebelliousPrincess: She actively goes against her father's wishes, from trying to elope with a demon from another circle to [[spoiler: orchestrating Pug and company's meeting with God, as well as gathering all the damned souls to fight the Intruders.]]
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler: It was her plan to have Pug and his friends consult God for help that ensured Hell's survival.]]
* StarCrossedLovers: With Samael. Unfortunately, Lucifer saw to it that it didn't last.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Has the same winged man-serpent look of her old man, [[spoiler: and the comparatively good looks of Paimon.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Paimon]]
One of Lucifer's top-ranking generals, and Lilith's caretaker.
----
* TheDragon: Is often the first to carry out Lucifer's will.
* LadyOfWar: Has the appearance of an armored demon woman, and acts the part as well.
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler: She's actually Lilith's mother, though the demon princess always suspected that, seeing how she's always taken care of her.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Moloch]]
A brutal general of Lucifer who sometimes visits Wrath.
----
* BadBoss: Is explicitly said to torture any imp who works for him.
* BloodKnight: To the point where he gives the Malebranche a run for their money.
* OurMinotaursAreDifferent: As befitting most depictions of this demon, he's a large winged bull-man.
* PunchPunchPunchUhOh: [[spoiler: Tries to bring down the first Intruder that comes in, only to make it stronger with his own sin.]]
* RedBaron: The bloody, the child killer, the vast stone of war.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Old Scratch]]
One of Lucifer's more respected lesser devils.

* MoralityPet: Both daughters are this to Abaddon.

[[folder: Duke Valac]]
A vile draconic Duke of Gluttony who lures demons in to eat them.
----
* DraconicAbomination: Resembles a three-headed dragon with a young human's torso replacing the middle head.
%%* DragonsAreDemonic:
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Beelzebub states how much he likes his Dukes, but not Valac, whom he sees as an ass.
* OffWithHisHead: [[spoiler: Alichino mutilates the head that ate Pug, getting him out and leaving the Duke grievously wounded.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Duke Naiberius]]
A Duke of Gluttony, and one of Beelzebub's major confidants.
----
* {{Cerberus}}: Looks a lot like the three-headed Hellhound, even residing in the circle of Hell that the monster guarded in Literature/TheDivineComedy.
[[/folder]]

!Demons of Greed

[[folder: Mulciber]]
Mammon's right-hand demon, and the main supervisor of Pandemonium's construction.
----
* OnlyFriend: He seems to be this to Mammon, being both his top demon and confidant.
* OnlySaneMan: He certainly tries to manage Pandemonium well, but he has to put up with his boss' inane decision-making.
* UndyingLoyalty: For all of his frustrations with Mammon, he's very clearly his best friend.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Melchom]]
One of the highest-ranking bureaucrats in Greed, with the nasty disposition to match.
----
* NotSoStoic: Matilda exposing every loophole to get her and the others to the next circle causes him to fume in anger.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: The most obstructive one in all of Greed. It takes someone as resourceful as Matilda to get through him.
* PerpetualFrowner: Never seen happy at all.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Astaroth]]
Mammon's main general.
----
* EatenAlive: [[spoiler: One of the first major demons to be absorbed by the Intruders. She gets better when they're all defeated.]]
* SnakesAreSinister: Described as being a humanoid serpent like Lucifer and Lilith.
[[/folder]]

!Demons of Sloth

[[folder: Verrine and Gemory]]
A succubus and an imp that our heroes encounter while in Sloth.
----
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: The two are shown to clearly care about each other, as shown when [[spoiler: they tearfully reunite with each other after the main Intruder is defeated.]]
* EvilCounterpart: To Matilda and Pug respectively.
* SmugSnake: Their demeaning attitudes towards our heroes dissipate when Alichino threatens them by pitchfork-point.
[[/folder]]

!Demons of Envy

[[folder: Keryon]]
A former Cherub, and a messenger between circles.
----
* ButtMonkey: Doesn't have the best treatment from either Lilith or Azazel, being the one who takes most of the heat for giving messages between circles.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Plunges into the Intruder horde to give the heroes time to reach the top of Hell.]]
* ShootTheMessenger: Azazel beat him senseless until he came clean about Samuel's actions.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Samael]]
A high-ranking demon who was once Lilith's secret boyfriend before Lucifer found out.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: He gets a whole chapter dedicated to he and Lilith's brief affair.
* GroinAttack: Lucifer made him pay the price for his affair with Lilith by castrating him.
* StarCrossedLovers: With Lilith. It didn't end well.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Azazel]]
A "partner" of Samael who gladly sold him out to gain acclaim.
----
* KarmaHoudini: Never once gets punished for ruining the relationship between Samael and Lilith.
[[/folder]]

!Heaven

The beings that inhabit the realm of Heaven.

[[folder: God]]
The Creator Himself, whom the demons all think of as a Tyrant. Lucifer very nearly killed Him before being overcome by His very visage.
----
* AllLovingHero: Has nothing but love and patience for all of His creations, even the demons whom He feels nothing but sympathy for.
* DeusExMachina: In the most literal sense. [[spoiler: Pug and company come to Him in order to stop the Intruders, and He does, giving Lucifer power via virtue and His entire army of angels to the cause.]]
* GodIsGood: Despite the horrible reputation He has in Hell, He's a truly benevolent God who wishes for everyone to come to Heaven someday, no matter how sinful they are. [[spoiler: He also helps save the day with His forces.]]
* HeroWithBadPublicity: It's no surprise that the demons view Him as a horrible being who condemned them to eternal suffering.
* YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm: The description of God is almost intentionally vague. The most we get is that He's everything all at once, and so beautiful it defies description entirely. Not to mention, one look nearly incinerated Lucifel when he tried to attack Him outright.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Michael]]
The leader of the angelic Choir, and the one who struck down Lucifer personally.
----
* ArchangelGabriel: Fits most descriptions as God's top angel, complete with combat prowess.
* PyrrhicVictory: She defeated Lucifel, but lost a brother-in-arms to sin in the process. She broke down in tears shortly after beating him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Gabriel]]
The second-in-command of the Angelic Choir, who's ready to blow her horn to rally the troops, and who drove her sword into Abaddon permanently.
----
* ArchangelGabriel: A very faithful depiction that has the horn and everything.
* BlowThatHorn: Typical of most interpretations of the character, Gabriel comes with a horn to rally the troops.
* NiceGirl: Explicitly stated to be one of the most kindhearted angels.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Raphael]]
An angel in the Choir who acts as a shepherd and a guide for those ascending the mountain of Purgatory.
----
* ArchangelRaphael: In this story, there's more emphasis on her status as someone who helps others up Purgatory.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Azrael]]
A skeletal Psychopomp of an Angel, and the personification of death itself.
----
* ArchangelAzrael: The one who guides the souls of the dead, she fits the bill entirely.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Despite her unsettling appearance, she's nothing but helpful to our heroes.
* DontFearTheReaper: As with the other angels, she's entirely benevolent, and admits to Pug and friends that she wishes she could help them beyond the mountain of purgatory.
* TheGrimReaper: Her appearance is that of a skeleton with large bat-like wings and a plague doctor mask, and she's the one who shepherds the dead.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Matilda's Husband]]
The man who Matilda fell in love with and married all those decades ago, who currently resides in Heaven, waiting for her.
----
* GenreSavvy: Catches on very quickly that the weird woman trying to seduce him is a succubus trying to make a deal with him.
* IWillWaitForYou: It's implied he stated this when he went to Heaven. [[spoiler: And sure enough, he did.]]
* TheLostLenore: Was this to Matilda.
* NiceGuy: While stated to be not perfect, he is a very warm-hearted and caring person in both life and death.
* NoNameGiven: WordOfGod states that he has no name because in the Bible, most non-major figures went unnamed. However, Cope did suggest something like John Mark (named after the main character in "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and the fact that he was Matilda's mark).
[[/folder]]

!Spoiler Character

[[folder: The True Antagonist]]
'''The Intruders'''

Horrifying, unsightly, and more prominently ravenous monsters made from pure concentrated sin. With no more living mortals to hold onto sin, it has all come together into a sapient horde birthed from a massive abomination shaped like a star with many eyes and teeth. Their apparent goal is to devour all demons and make them a part of themselves.
----
* AllegoricalCharacter: Aside from them representing unbound sin, WordOfGod has stated that they represent the more modern idea that demons should be a form of horrifying conflict devoid of personality in contrast with the more characterized and sympathetic demons derived from old-age folklore.
* AngelsDevilsAndSquid: The squid in this universe, coming exclusively from the mortal realm.
* BodyHorror: The Intruders run the gamut, looking like amalgamations of limbs, bones, and other nasty inside-out parts of people mashed together with little to no coherence.
* BeastOfTheApocalypse: The main Intruder is this, being a sin-powered beast that arrives after the end of humanity to destroy Hell.
* CaptainErsatz: Deliberately made to be pale imitations of the monsters of Creator/HPLovecraft and Creator/JunjiIto.
* EldritchAbomination: Aside from their HORRIBLE appearances, they fit the bill being enigmatic horror shows that exist solely to devour and multiply with no greater motive besides their spread.
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: [[InvokedTrope Invoked.]] The Intruders are voracious monsters made out of pure sin...and not much else, further distancing them from the sinister but far more nuanced demons. Pug [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] this, calling them outright dull.
* TheHeartless: They are monsters made of sin, now loose from the mortal shells that kept them at bay.
* HumansAreCthulhu: Actually, human sin is so, but these beasts are exclusively from the mortal realm.
* FeedItWithFire: Any time the demons try and destroy an Intruder, it usually only gets stronger and/or multiplies. Only fighting in the name of selflessness and virtue can they truly be destroyed.
* MadeOfEvil: They are made purely from sin, which is only able to take form due to there being no mortals to keep it in check.
* NearVillainVictory: The main Intruder ate every last demon in Hell that wasn't elsewhere at the moment until the Princes rediscovered their virtue and camaraderie.
* RasputinianDeath: The main Intruder is utterly wrecked from the inside by the Princes and lesser demons ripping holes through it from the inside before being obliterated by the concentrated powers of both the angels and the demons.
