[[header:The Occult Research Club]]

Formed by Rias Gremory during her first year at Kuoh Academy, the Occult Research Club is the extracurricular club that our heroes are a part of. Despite the club's name, very little actual ''research'' is actually done; after all, the members are not (or in some cases, ''no longer'') human. The club is really just a front for Rias, her "family," and later, other supernatural beings, and it provides cover for their operations; namely dealing with paranormal activity and destroying hostile supernatural beings. The members often use the club as an excuse to get out of any classes they might be in at the moment when an emergency pops up, and the old schoolhouse in which they meet is secluded enough to prevent scrutiny from normal human students.

[[folder:In General]]
* AllWomenAreLustful: All the girls want Issei's attention, including in more sexual manners.
* AlmightyJanitor: Everyone in the Club, except Rias and Azazel, are low-ranked devils. Rias is currently one of the weaker members of the Club. You do the math. Even after Issei, Akeno, and Kiba's promotion, it's implied they are ''still'' not promoted to a level that would indicate their strength. Justified by Sirzechs, since he believes they're far from ready to handle the responsibilities and pressures of a high-ranked devil.
* ArchEnemy: As a whole, the club serves as one of the Khaos Brigade's enemies.
* BackFromTheDead: Every Sacred Gear wielder in Rias' peerage had died right before she reincarnated them into a Devil. Issei, in particular, goes through this a second time.
* BadassCrew: It's basically an unspoken rule that, if you are or become part of the Occult Research Club, you either were already a badass or will ''become'' a badass, and joining the group means becoming one of the TrueCompanions that have each other's backs.
* BadassFamily: What Rias regards her club as, with her as the "mother" that holds it together.
* BattleHarem: All the members of the Occult Research Club are strong fighters and they all love Issei. Even Issei's fellow male club members Kiba and Gasper adore him. It gets lampshaded by the [[WordOfGod author himself at one point.]]
* BreakTheCutie: Almost all the members of Issei's harem after his "death", showing how psychologically dependent they are on him due to his help in overcoming their respective DarkAndTroubledPast. Fortunately subverted after he comes back to life with some draconic backup.
* CripplingOverspecialization: One criticism Azazel throws their way in regards to Rating Games is that they have "muscles for brains"; they focus too much on straightforward power, and can easily be overcome with proper technique.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Most of them are devils. They're also the heroes of the story.
* ADayInTheLimelight: A member of the club is usually the focal point depending on the volume.
** Volume 1: Issei and Asia's introductions into the devil world.
** Volume 2: Rias's love life.
** Volume 3: Kiba's tragic past with the holy sword experiment.
** Volume 4: Gasper's introduction.
** Volume 5: Koneko training to control her senjutsu powers.
** Volume 6: Asia's background with Diodora Astaroth
** Volume 7: Akeno's strained relation with her father.
** Volume 10: Issei dealing with Raynare's "curse".
** Volume 12: Kiba protecting the Club after Issei's departure.
** Volume 14: Ravel dealing with the Phenex-tear black market.
** Volume 16: Gasper's life in the Romanian vampire society.
** Volume 17: Rossweisse's study of 666.
** Volume 18: Irina's childhood with Issei.
** Volume 19: Xenovia's work with the student council.
** Volume 20: Issei and his relationship with his parents.
** Volume 22: Issei's promotion to High-Class Devil and the graduation of Rias and Akeno.
** Volume 24: Koneko and Kuroka's relationship.
** Volume 25: Rossweisse's love life.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Issei has given several to the girls, and [[RescueRomance keeping his word]] is a major factor in his growing harem. He also once set up a code of ethics with the other two male members of Rias' peerage, which mostly revolves around protecting the girls. Kiba once gave one to Issei himself for helping him overcome his RoaringRampageOfRevenge, but Issei is too creeped out by the fact that [[HoYay he's giving it to a fellow male]] to take it seriously.
* DislikesTheNewGuy: Rias and Akeno disapprove of Azazel initially entering their territory for different reasons. However, they eventually reconsider their opinions later on.
** Rias initially dislikes Azazel making advances towards Issei, who was understandably murdered by his accomplice Raynare.
** For Akeno, it's because of her initial resentment of Fallen Angels (including herself) since Shuri was killed for her relationship with Baraqiel.
* DysfunctionJunction: Almost every single member of the club has or had issues that needed resolving.
* EndOfAnAge: By the end of the fourth story arc, Rias and Akeno have graduated from Kuoh Academy and Xenovia becomes the Student Council President.
* EnsembleCast: As the series progresses and more members join the club, the main cast continues to grow, eventually reaching 16 members. Add on Vali and Kuroka from [[Characters/HighSchoolDxDValiTeam the Vali Team]] and Sona and Saji from [[Characters/HighSchoolDxDStudentCouncil the Student Council]], and the cast reaches 20 characters. With so many characters, the group usually has a RotatingProtagonist share the spotlight with Issei in each arc, whereas the other characters take a backseat. The best example would be the Kyoto Arc, where Kunou has the most focus alongside Issei, while Kiba, Asia, Irina, Xenovia, Rossweisse, Azazel, and Saji get secondary focus. At the same time, Rias, Akeno, Koneko, and Gasper remain in Kuoh and are as such OutOfFocus, while Vali, Kuroka, and Sona are completely absent.
* GenderBender: In one Volume 13 short story, the group (minus Issei) underwent a gender change via Azazel's gender-swapping raygun.
* GoodIsNotSoft: The Occult Research Club is ''not'' against using deadly force against the various {{mooks}} or {{Big Bad}}s they encounter and/or indirectly causing them to die. Only Issei had reservations about killing antagonists at first.
* InvoluntaryGroupSplit:
** Zigzagged. After [[spoiler:Issei's promotion into a High-Class Devil in Volume 22, Rias trades Asia, Xenovia and Rossweisse into his peerage and Ravel is traded into his peerage by Lady Phenex. Due to Issei being Rias's pawn and Ravel being a member of the Occult Research Club, they haven't truly split though.]]
** In Volume 19, Xenovia has to leave the Occult Research Club due to her becoming the new Student Council President. In Volume 18, Rias names Asia and Kiba the new president and vice-president due to her and Akeno's upcoming graduation from Kuoh's high school division, officially doing so during Volume 22.
* LadyAndKnight:
** Rias is the benevolent and caring Bright Lady, and most of her peerage are her White Knights, who fight on her behalf in Rating Games and assist her in other endeavors. Due to the chess motifs of the Series, she has literal chivalric-gentleman sword-swinging knights like Kiba and more figurative knights like Koneko (who is more like a castle). Then there's Issei, who is her straight-up champion, but he's technically her foot-soldier.
** Asia is like a sub-Lady, a nun so innocent and caring that Issei and the others protect her like knights.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Of the core group Rias, Akeno and Asia have long hair and are very feminine (in different mode) while Koneko and Xenovia are more {{Tomboy}}.
* MomentKiller: ''Everyone'' in Issei's harem is this to the others. It can count as a meta-example as well as this is Ishibumi's way of cooperating with the CantHaveSexEver clause in writing this story.
* NonIndicativeName: They don't do any occult research. The name was simply chosen as a cover-up for the fact the club was initially comprised of Rias' peerage.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: They don't actually do any occult research, the club is merely a front.
* PyrrhicVictory: They did win the Rating Game against the Student Council, but lost a lot of members to pull it off, and their ratings were lowered as a result.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: While they claim to be a club, it's more accurate to call them a family comprised of people that don't really belong anywhere else. Their leader is a devil princess, and among their members include the sole survivors of a lethal experiment by the church, a Nephilim priestess, two former agents of the church, one of the Angels of Micheal, a nekomata, a crossdressing dhampir, an eccentric fallen angel, a thrifty valkyrie, an {{ojou}} phoenix, the descendant of Morgan le Fey, a prankster grim reaper, a [[AsianFoxSpirit kitsune]] princess, the Dragon God of Infinity, and a very perverted Red Dragon Emperor. Despite these different backgrounds and any initial animosity, they all care for one another and won't hesitate to show it.
* RescueRomance: A lot of the girls fall in love with Issei due to him saving them when they needed help. Examples include Asia, Rias, Koneko and Rossweisse.
* RunOrDie: The girls are told by Ddraig to run away from Issei's wrath against Shalba or they'll die with him.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Most of the girls toward Issei for one reason or another. Rias sees all men as the same, Akeno hates men, Asia was too innocent to find interest in the opposite sex, Irina and Xenovia were both raised in the church, Koneko dislikes perverted things. However, they enjoy Issei and all love him to the point they can't live without him. The only exception amidst the girls is Tosca, who doesn't know Issei that well and is closer to her ChildhoodFriend Kiba.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: The girls keep falling in love with Issei despite his perverted nature because he is a good guy at heart who will literally go through hell to protect them.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Had Rias not provide Issei Hyoudou's EmergencyTransformation after Raynare's killing, then Issei wouldn't have had to rescue Asia and battled Riser to stop his engagement with Rias. Had none of those recruitments after Issei happened, they wouldn't have allied with the Three Factions. Not to mention Xenovia never would've realized that GodIsDead and joined the club, or Irina would never have reunited with Issei, or Akeno wouldn't have reconciled with Baraqiel, and so forth.
* SwitchingPOV: The story is usually told through Issei's perspective, though at certain points we see the story through other characters' eyes, namely, Rias, Kiba (secondary narration if something is going on with Issei), Azazel (when there's a discussion with the leaders involved), Asia for a brief period, and [[LowerDeckEpisode Irina in one of the short stories]].
* TookALevelInBadass: Throughout the series, as time goes on ''everyone'' in the Occult Research Club starts actively grinding levels in badass, especially [[BashBrothers Issei and Kiba]].
* TrueCompanions: Despite all the girls wanting to be with Issei, they still trust and help each other no matter what happens. Mocking any of them will set all of their {{Berserk Button}}s off at once.
* UndyingLoyalty: The club members have a strong sense of loyalty for their group. Even from ''beyond the grave''.
* UnskilledButStrong: During the Rating Games the Club showed a lack of experience, hence they often don't do so well. This is best exemplified in their match against Sona's group, which almost spelled defeat for them.
* UnwittingPawn: They become one for Vali in Volume 7 seeing as the latter wanted Fenrir on his side, thereby fighting alongside them.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: With a bunch of really hot babes being head-over-heels for a LovableSexManiac that most girls would typically avoid, this was inevitable. Though, subverted as all pervertedness aside, Issei cares deeply for all the girls in his life.
* WorldOfBuxom: In the future, all of the girls (possibly including Ophis) have a BuxomBeautyStandard figure, to the point that their children thought at first that women should have large chests. Yes, even ''Koneko'', ''Le Fay'' and ''Asia''.

--> ''My name is Rias Gremory. I am a Devil. And I am your Master. Nice to meet you, Hyoudou Issei-kun. Can I call you Ise?''

Rias Gremory is the president of the Occult Research Club and the head of the House of Gremory. She's also the daughter of Zeoticus and Venelana Gremory, the younger sister of Sirzechs Lucifer, and aunt of Millicas Gremory. She is a top-ranked devil at Kuoh Academy who catches the eye of Issei Hyoudou. Later, he summons her with his dying words. Taking pity on the boy, and also because she's interested in his Sacred Gear, she revives him with eight Pawn pieces. After that, an interesting relationship blossoms between the two.

----
* AbsurdPhobia: According to a short story, Rias has a fear of camels, because she got hurt by wild camels after she sneaked out to go to the farm when she was still young. [[GeniusBonus One would have to be knowledgeable about the Ars Goetia to understand exactly why this is so funny.]] [[note]]Gremory is a demon lord of the Ars Goetia who is depicted as a beautiful maiden riding a camel.[[/note]]
* ActionGirlfriend: Rias is a devil who appears when Issei summons her in his final moments. She then resurrects him as a devil and becomes his master, main love interest and eventual girlfriend.
* AdaptationDyeJob: She has blue eyes in the novels, but bluish-green eyes in the first three seasons of the anime.
* {{Ambadassador}}: She participates in missions that she often solves diplomatically. But when things go south, she's not afraid to go toe-to-toe with her enemies, like what happened in Katerea's invasion of Kuoh Academy.
* AndIMustScream: Thanks to Loki's corruption in ''[=BorN=]'', she's unable to fight his control until Issei snaps her out of it and [[LaserGuidedAmnesia her memory gets erased]].
* ArrangedMarriage: Rias was placed into an engagement with Riser Phenex in an attempt to unite their families and to preserve the bloodline of Pure-Blooded Devils.
* BabiesEverAfter: In the future she has a son with Issei, named Ex.
* BadassInDistress:
** That is, if you can call the engagement party with Riser being a distress moment.
** Since her body gets corrupted by Loki's curse in ''[=BorN=]'', she is trapped within herself.
* BathingBeauty: She has many {{Shower Scene}}s.
* BattleCouple: She eventually gets together with Issei. Becomes more so when her breasts act as a battery for Issei.
* BedmateReveal: In Volume 1, Issei wakes up thinking the events of the previous night were just a dream. Then he notices he's naked. And that Rias is curled up under the blankets next to him equally naked before she awakens and is completely nonchalant about the situation. HilarityEnsues when Issei's mother enters his room.
* BenevolentBoss: She loves her subordinates so much she treats them as a family rather than employees. Rias is utterly heartbroken when Asia is sent to the Dimensional Gap and Issei is once again killed by Shalba.
* BerserkButton: Calling Rias "Switch Princess" to her face tends to tick her off, especially if the one doing it is ''Bikou''.
* BettyAndVeronica:
** When she moved to the Hyoudou residence, Rias and Asia are the girls treated as Issei's primary love interests since the harem was just starting to form. Rias is the Veronica; the beautiful and sexy devil of noble heritage who is way out of Issei's league from his perspective.
** Rias herself plays the Betty compared to her [[HeteroSexualLifePartner best friend]] [[TheTease Akeno's]] Veronica. While both girls are highly beautiful and atractive, each of them have a different approach where it comes to expressing their love for Issei. Rias is shown to be more innocent and sometimes shy in progressing her relationship with Issei, while Akeno is more seductive and sultry, being very eager to quickly advance her relationship with him, which including sleeping with him, much to Rias' jealousy.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She is one of the nicest and personable schoolgirls you will ever meet. Nevertheless, if you push her far enough (such as insulting her servants, especially Issei), she ''will'' be prepared to vaporize you into dust.
* BigGood: She serves as one for the Occult Research Club as president way back in Volume 1.
* BirdsOfAFeather: Downplayed, but part of the reason why Issei and Rias get along despite their differences is them being able to relate to being kind and protective souls, who find value in even small gestures of affection and having to deal with awkward parents. (Morbidly enough they’re the ONLY ones in the club with two living parents, at all).
* BloodKnight: A subdued example. Rias has no love for life-and-death violence at all, but she does greatly enjoy Ratings Games as the good, clean combat sport they were intended to be. According to [[WordOfGod Ichiei Ishibumi]], much as Issei's goal of ending the war is to focus on having a harem, her goal is to clean out the corruption so she can fight safely once again.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: In episode 10 of ''[=BorN=]'', Loki corrupts her with his curse. Fortunately for Rias, [[LaserGuidedAmnesia her memory of that event gets erased]] after Issei snaps her out of it and defeats Loki's clone two episodes later.
* BreastExpansion: An {{inverted|trope}} example; restoring Issei with her breasts after Gift being used on them causes them to ''shrink''. Fortunately (for Issei) they grow back after she rests.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has a pretty buxom figure, which is the source of a lot of MaleGaze shots and stares from Issei. Asia also feels insecure around her because [[ACupAngst she can't measure up]].
* CallingTheOldManOut: After finding out the dark secret before she became in charge of Kuoh Town, she calls out Zekram Bael, her ''maternal ancestor''.
* CantCatchUp:
** Unlike the rest of the club, she doesn't gain any new ability; thus, she did not get any stronger than where she was initially, to the point that she thought of herself as TheLoad during her and Issei's fight against Sairaorg and his Pawn.
** This is eventually rectified as she does learn or gain various new abilities thanks to absorbing and adapting Issei's aura, such as the finishing move Extinguished Star and her own version of the boosted gear's armor.
* TheChessmaster: As King of her peerage, she can determine where her pieces will go in Rating Games and battles.
* ChildishPillowFight: She gets into one with Akeno as the two quarrels over Issei, after Akeno moves into Issei's house.
* ClingyJealousGirl: After falling in love with Issei, Rias tends to get very jealous whenever girls get close to him and said that Issei belongs to her only. She's generally quite playful and teasing when confronting the relatively more aggressive Asia, only to become aggressive herself when confronting the more teasing Akeno. It's subverted after Issei confesses to her and they start dating; Rias starts to accept Issei's dream of having a harem and doesn't get as easily jealous as before.
* ClubPresident: She is the president of the Occult Research Club until Asia replaces her by the end of Volume 19.
* CoolBigSis: Rias is lovingly kind or sternly mature as the situation calls for it.
* CrazyEnoughToWork: Her magical breasts work because of this trope.
* CrutchCharacter: At the start, she's the strongest member of the club. As time goes on, she devolves into the middle tier (for a while that is). Technically she didn't get any weaker; the others just got stronger more quickly than she did (again, only for a while).
* CuddleBug: Fittingly to her kind and motherly nature, Rias is always quite eager to hug and cuddle her servants in times of struggle (whether to comfort them or to express how glad she is that they're alive and well) having zero problems on whether the one on the receiving end is male or female. She does seem to have a preference towards hugging Issei though.
* CuteLittleFangs: Some of the light novel artwork portrays her with these.
* DaddysGirl: She loves her father Zeoticus very much. As does he, to the point where he and Sirzechs had nosebleeds by looking at how Rias acted as a child.
* DeliberatelyDistressedDamsel: She didn't really want to play as the DamselInDistress to lure out the remaining Issei clones. Then she gets into it, believing Azazel's suggestion. Sure enough, the Issei clones go and try to rescue her.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Behind Issei, who is the focal protagonist, Rias is the second main focal character of the series.
* TheDividual: With Akeno in nature. From narrative perspective is clear that they are intended to work as an indivisible combo for all kind of actions. Yes, even (or maybe especially) [[ThreeWaySex that ones]].
* DoesNotLikeMen: A {{Downplayed|Trope}} example. She gets along fine with males, right up until they show any romantic interest in her whatsoever, at which point she promptly rejects them. This is because, as heir apparent to the house of Gremory, the only men who've ever been interested in her were only interested in her house and title, not the woman; by the time she grew up into a MsFanservice, she'd been soured on the idea of romance altogether. Issei, being the ChivalrousPervert he is, helps her open her heart to [[SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan him and him alone]].
* DontCallMeSir: Rias starts taking an issue with Issei continuing to call her "President" instead of her actual name since it makes clear he's trying to create a distance with her that he doesn't have with the other girls.
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: She does ''not'' take kindly to anyone mocking her servants and is willing to blast them to kingdom come.
* DrillSergeantNasty: She is tough on Issei when he beings training with her.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Later on, she becomes known as "Switch Princess", much to her embarrassment, and blames Bikou for it; it's become a ''major'' BerserkButton for her since. She is later called the "Crimson Bust Princess" by Azazel in Volume 11.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: After falling in love with Issei, everyone has noticed her romantic affection for him, except ironically, Issei himself initially. Her father even asked Issei to call him father-in-law when the Gremory peerage visited the Gremory territory.
* ExactWords: He refers to Issei as a pawn, and although at the beginning that may mean that he is completely sacrificial, what Rias was actually referring to is that Issei fulfills the role of all 8 pawns at once, so in reality he is very useful.
* FacePalm: She often does this all the time, usually out of frustration.
* FieryRedhead: Subverted; normally, she's overall rather level-headed and seldom raises her voice even when she's serious. She does, however, bring this out [[ClingyJealousGirl when it comes to Issei]], but even then she does grow out of it to an extent later in the series.
* FirstKiss: She shares her first kiss with Issei by the end of Volume 2.
* FlightOfRomance: Issei and Rias shared an intimate moment on top of a Gryphon when returning to the human world, as Rias gives Issei her first kiss after hearing his proclamation to always rescue her.
* GoGoEnslavement: During an OVA an Egyptian prince possessing Issei makes her dance for him in a ''very'' skimpy bikini outfit. Naturally, he and Issei both enjoyed it.
* HeroicSacrifice: This trope is parodied in Volume 11, when her "Oppai Beam" replenishes Issei's aura, but leads to her breasts shrinking afterward. Issei is devastated, but Rias assures him that they'll return to normal size once she gets some rest, leading to the two tearfully and hammily expressing their love for each other.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: She refers to Akeno as her best friend. Akeno is her Queen and the first person she added to her peerage.
* HiddenDepths: Along with Akeno, Rias actually has a driving license so she can have driving dates with Issei.
* HotTeacher: She cosplays as this in the third season's first Blu-Ray special in an attempt to outdo Akeno in a seduction contest for Issei.
* IdiotHair: While definitely not an idiot, Rias has a single hair strand sticking out from the top of her head.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Because Issei appreciates her body, she becomes romantically interested in him.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: Towards the end of ''[=BorN=]'', Issei is forced to fight Rias because of [[BigBad Loki]] creating multiple timelines.
* ImageSong: [[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RfJdgyg_GZY Crimson No Binetsu]]
* IntimateHealing: She heals Issei's wounds from Dohnaseek's by cuddling naked with him in bed.
* LapPillow: She gives one to Issei when she unlocks a portion of his Pawn pieces' power. After falling in love with him, she is shown to do it a lot.
* LargeAndInCharge: Rias is a 172 cm/5'8[=''=] girl who's the Occult Research Club's president and one of the tallest members of the club.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: At the end of ''[=BorN=]'', the memories of her and Issei's battle with Loki's clone of Issei are erased when they return to our world.
* LegFocus: As the primary MsFanservice of the series, alongside her ample breasts getting MaleGaze she has plenty of scenes dedicated to highlighting her legs, helped by both many of her outfits fully exposing them and the fact she SleepsInTheNude.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Her early appearances in the anime are accompanied with [[https://youtu.be/2uDSa8LdQTU Shinsou no, Ojou-sama Desu]] - a calm orchestral piece befitting of her elegant disposition and warm, motherly personality.
* LetsGetDangerous: After Issei died and returned, she created a new technique, considered too dangerous to use in Rating Games, because it would kill too fast for emergency teleportation to save the victim. Rias mentions she wanted it to be like that, since it's a technique to kill anyone who tries to hurt Issei again.
* LineageComesFromTheFather: {{Subverted|Trope}}. While she has red hair and blue eyes like her ancestors from her father's side, her Power of Destruction abilities and strict demeanor come from her mother's side.
* MadeOfTemptation: She successfully tempts Rossweisse to join the group as teacher and Rook despite her age. Issei notes that she could have a successful career selling insurance... or anything else, really. This comes to a head when ''EX'' reveals that [[spoiler: Rias indeed becomes a very successful businesswoman, managing company holdings and franchises that her husband Issei and the family own.]]
* MagneticHero: She has gathered quite a lot of powerful and special people in her group even before meeting Issei. Lampshaded by Sirzechs when talking with Azazel.
* MarryForLove: Rias is shown to have a strong desire to marry out of love rather then merely being forced into a politically motivated marriage. She rejected her engagement with Riser Phenex since it was arranged without her concent, as the engagement was annauled due to Issei's actions. Rias was shown to be very happy when Issei proposed to her after she graduated from Kuoh High.
* MatchmakerCrush: She initially tries to pair Issei and Asia together, until Rias falls in love with Issei herself. However, due to the harem aspect of the series, it is shown that while the two girls do compete for his attention and affection, they remain on good terms, with Rias even praising Asia when she made the first move to seduce Issei.
* MistressAndServantBoy: She is the mistress to Issei's servant.
* AMotherToHerMen: She ''really'' loves her servants; breaking their hearts and making them cry is a ''one-way ticket'' to the afterlife. Ddraig states that the Gremory family is known for being extremely affectionate toward their servants.
* MotivationalKiss: Gives one to Issei before his Mid-class Devil exam, with the belief that he will pass.
* MsFanservice: She has the second largest bust in the series and not afraid to show it off. In general, she is the character that appears naked more often (since the first episode).
* NakedApron: She wears one after seeing Asia wear one to seduce Issei, commending Asia for making the first move in seducing Issei.
* NakedFirstImpression: She introduces herself to Issei after the two wake up from sleeping on his bed.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: As the Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess, mentioning Rias by name and her Power of Destruction brings fear to her enemies. For that matter, her surname, Gremory, is shared by one of the seventy-two demons of the Goetia.
* NiceGirl: Despite her strict nature during missions and training, Rias is very kind and caring toward her Peerage than most other masters. [[BewareTheNiceOnes That is if you don't push her buttons.]]
* OfficialCouple: In Volume 10, Issei finally confesses to her and she officially becomes his girlfriend. Issei still wishes for a harem and now that she's secure about how he feels about her, Rias will let him have it as long as she's always number one. [[spoiler: He proposes to her in Volume 22 and she accepts, making her the first official fiancee in an ever-growing list of them]].
* {{Ojou}}: The heiress of the Gremory Clan.
* OneeSama: Along with Akeno, she's referred to as one of the "Two Great Ladies of Kuoh Academy".
* OutGambitted: She was overpowered by Sona during their Rating Game in Volume 5.
* PassingTheTorch: Upon her graduation, Rias assigns Asia to take her place as the club's president.
* PeerlessLoveInterest: Issei and Rias are in love with each other, but since she's a beautiful top-ranked devil, he one-sidedly decided she was out of his league and decided to be content with fighting as her loyal pawn. This becomes a problem as the series goes on since Rias wants to take their mutual feelings to the next level, but Issei is still treating their relationship as master-servant. This reaches its peak in Volume 10 when Issei claims Rias is his master and nothing else before the rest of the Club spells out the problem for Issei.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: She has the "Power of Destruction", a type of demonic energy that allows her to release energies that can disintegrate matter, both living and inanimate, with relative ease. She is further able to control the shape and power of the technique such as creating multiple softball-sized bullets to lessen the destructive force yet increase the range of her attack.
* PlayingCardMotifs: In the ending theme of the anime's first season, there's a playing card theme, and Rias is shown as the King.
* PreMortemOneLiner: She says "You've toyed with my servant's emotions for the last time. Be gone!" to Raynare, right before blowing her to smithereens.
* PropertyOfLove: As Issei's master, Rias calls him her possession and says that he belongs to her only. This was taken up a notch later on as Rias' feelings for him grow and she doesn't want any girls close to him. This eventually changes in volume 10 when they become an OfficialCouple, even letting him have a date with others and a harem.
* ProudBeauty: Rias enjoys Issei ogling her.
* PurelyAestheticGlasses: Sometimes wears a pair of glasses, even though she has good vision.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: As the Heir Apparent to the great devil House Gremory and the President of the Occult Research Club, she can kick major ass when she needs to.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Being the president of the Occult Research Club, Rias is supremely competent at her position, views her servants as a family and is willing to help fight enemies on their behalf.
* RebelliousPrincess: She's Heir Apparent to the great devil House Gremory, and little sister of one of the four Satans. Kings are supposed to [[MissionControl hang back and command their pieces]]. Rias prefers to mix it in -- and it's not a good thing, because [[WeCannotGoOnWithoutYou a team loses if their King goes down]]. [[WhatTheHellHero Both she and Sairaorg are called out on this]].
* RedBaron: She is known as the "Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess".
* RedheadsAreRavishing: Rias is a gorgeous and buxom MsFanservice with long crimson hair. Issei, upon first seeing Rias at school, remarked to himself just how beautiful her deep crimson hair is.
* RedIsHeroic: She is one of the main heroes and has distinctive crimson hair.
* RedOniBlueOni: She is the Red Oni to Akeno and Sona's Blue Oni; Akeno and Sona are the more logical and cool-headed ones while Rias has a bit more of a passionate personality.
* RiskingTheKing: Being a powerful devil with destruction magic is a double-edged sword when it puts the leader in harm's way. [[ChessMotifs Happens literally]] in rating games, where a manpower shortage and her reluctance to let her peerage suffer for her sake lead her to get involved quite quickly. Best shown during the first Rating Game of the series, where her strategy is a glorified diversion so she can take on the enemy king directly.
* RoyalBlood: As the second-born child of the Gremory clan, she became its heiress when her brother Sirzechs became a member of the Four Great Satans.
* SchoolIdol: Rias is declared as the beauty of Kuoh Academy.
* SecondLove: Issei's first crush ended with her killing him, after which Rias revived him. While Rias is not Issei's FirstLove, she ''is'' his true love and eventually becomes his girlfriend.
* SexyMentor: She teaches Issei about how the Occult Research Club works in battles. She's also his main love interest and often shows off her sexy naked body to him.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She's willing to be naked in front of her servants, ''especially'' towards Issei.
* SheIsTheKing: Using ChessMotifs, Rias is considered a King because she's the most important person in the Rating Game.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** She initially ships Issei and Asia, as she notices Asia's love and affection for Issei while Issei is clueless. This mostly stops after Rias falls in love with Issei herself, but it is shown that Asia is initially the only girl she is comfortable having around Issei.
** Ships Tsubaki and Kiba, due to thinking of Tsubaki as a good match for Kiba.
* ShoutOutThemeNaming: [[WordOfGod Ichiei Ishibumi]] says that her given name comes from... [[VideoGame/{{Pokemon}} Garchomp's]] Japanese name (Gabu'''rias'''). The connection between a female Devil and a draconic Landshark is up to interpretation.
* SickeninglySweethearts: By the time of Volume 11, she and Issei have fallen in love to the point that they forget people are watching them.
* SleepsInTheNude: Rias likes to sleep in the nude with Issei in the same bed.
* SquishyWizard: She's got awesome magical attack power, but she's terrible at taking hits.
* StatuesqueStunner: She stands at 172 cm/5'8[=''=] tall, is considered attractive by everyone else including her lover Issei, and is also the club's resident MsFanservice.
* StockLightNovelCalamityPrincess: The TropeCodifier. Heir to the [[Literature/ArsGoetia Gremory]] devil clan and younger sister to [[DemonLordsAndArchdevils one of the Four Great Satans]], Rias is [[PrettyPrincessPowerhouse both beautiful and powerful]], with striking long red hair that sometimes seems to glow in the light. With her sharp mind, and the Gremory bloodline's [[PowerOfTheVoid "Power of Destruction"]], she's earned the title of "Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess".[[note]]Apparently inherited from her mother, who was known as the "Flaxen-Haired Ruin Princess".[[/note]] She enters a MagicallyBindingContract with TheHero Issei, becomes his girlfriend, and proceeds to be MsFanservice, fighting alongside him as a team in a story that frequently features [[TournamentArc "Rating Games"]] against teams of other devils.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She greatly resembles her mother Venelana in her later years but with her father Zeoticus's hair and eye color.
* TeamMom: Seriously, she is more of a mother to her servants than a "master" proper.
* TearsOfJoy: In Volume 10, she breaks into a crying fit of happiness after Issei confesses his love to her in private.
* TopWife: Issei is open about his desire of having a harem, but Rias is generally acknowledged to be the one to hold the title of his "legal wife" and immutable favorite. This doesn't stop the other girls from trying to usurp the position.
* TorpedoTits: Her "Oppai Beam", the ability to project a red light from her breasts, which recharges Issei's energy. Each use of this power causes her breasts to temporarily shrink in size, which makes Issei cry even though it's sometimes necessary. Her breast size will restore itself after a few days of rest.
* TrainingFromHell: She makes Issei undergo one of these, by forcing him to run as fast as she can and stretching his body to the limit.
* TranquilFury: Before Issei gives a CurbStompBattle to Diodora in volume 6.
-->'''Issei:''' May I?!?\
'''Rias:''' ''Go ahead.''
* UnrealisticBlackHole: Her Extinguished Star technique, named after the origin of black holes as the result of a star with significant mass burning out. It creates a SphereOfDestruction that [[GravitySucks sucks in]] and thoroughly disintegrates even tough-scaled Evil Dragons.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Harm Issei and Rias will ''vaporize'' you, as Raynare and her mooks found out the hard way.
* VocalEvolution: During the anime's first three seasons, Creator/YokoHikasa voices Rias with a husky, sensuous mature, and womanly voice. By the time of ''Hero'', it suddenly softens to a sweeter, gentler, and "traditionally" girly one.
* WifeHusbandry: GenderInverted and PlayedWith. Rias has stated that she intends to raise her own husband and model him as her ideal man. It is shown that some of the training that Issei goes through is for the sake of serving as Rias' future husband.

Akeno Himejima is Rias's confidante, subordinate and fellow member of the Occult Research Club. Her late mother, Shuri Himejima, was a Shinto priest and her father, Baraqiel, is a Fallen Angel. After her mother's death at the hands of Akeno's relatives, she went into exile. When Rias discovers Akeno, she transforms the latter into a devil and she eventually becomes the vice-president of the ORC.

----
* TheAce: She is quite skilled and adaptable in combat, to the point that some of the other characters are fearful of facing her due to her abilities as well as her queen ranking.
* AffectionateNickname: She calls Issei "darling" [[spoiler: after his match against Baraqiel.]]
* TheAloner: She became a hermit after Shuri was killed in her backstory.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: As Vice-President of the Occult Research Club, she can take down enemies singlehandedly.
* BabiesEverAfter: In the future she has a son with Issei, named Kurenai. Interestingly enough, she is also the first haremette to have a baby.
* BathtubBonding: She walks in on Issei bathing and joins him in Volume 23. She wishes to be a good wife and washes every part of his body. They soon become intimate until they were interrupted by Ophis, Lilith, and Kunou.
* BedmateReveal: At the beginning of Volume 5, Akeno enters Issei's bedroom and joins his friends after she moves into his residence.
* BeneathTheMask: She's introduced as the friendly and cheerful - if a bit sadistic - vice-president of the Occult Research Club and Rias's NumberTwo. In actuality, she turns out to be a sad young girl who resents her father Baraqiel for not being able to save her mother from being murdered.
* BettyAndVeronica: She acts as the Veronica to Rias's Betty, especially in their wildly different approaches in terms of getting closer to Issei; Rias is more demure and innocent about furthering her relationship, while Akeno has no such qualms and is far more forward.
* BigBreastPride: One of, if not, ''the'' bustiest in Iseei's harem which she is quick to remind the still buxom Rias of in their friendly rivalry for his affections.
* BloodKnight: She enjoys combat a little ''too'' much for comfort.
* BoomerangBigot: Akeno is a Nephilim who originally despised other fallen angels. The reason for this hate was that her mother was killed by her relatives for Akeno being part fallen angel and the fact that her father failed to save her mother. Due to witnessing the actions of other evil fallen angels such as Raynare and Kokabiel, increased her hate towards them as well as her self-loathing. due to this, she sympathizes with those who have suffered at the hands of fallen angels such as Issei and Asia. She falls in love with Issei due to him telling her he likes her despite being a fallen angel. After reconciling with her father, she lets go of her hatred and embraces her fallen angel heritage to get stronger.
* BornOfHeavenAndHell: She's part human/fallen angel and reincarnated devil. While normally she sprouts devil wings, she can actually sprout a fallen angel wing on one side.
* BrokenHero: A female example. She's in quite a bad position, as she makes it clear to Issei that because Baraqiel wasn't around when her family murdered Shuri, she went into exile and is unwilling to forgive him. She's noted to be one of the more emotionally fragile members of the Club, especially regarding Issei, whose supposed death left her borderline catatonic.
* BunnyGirl: She dresses up as one to attract Issei's clones. Naturally, they all fall for it, hook, line and sinker.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has an ample bust, and while this is a trait that's common for female [[InhumanlyBeautifulRace Fallen-Angels]], Azazel notes that her breasts are impressive even for Fallen-Angel standards.
* BirdsOfAFeather: Downplayed, but part of the reason why Issei and Akenoget along despite their differences is them being able to relate to being obscenely horny Japanese teenagers with more inner pain than their outer personas would let out at first.
* CallingTheOldManOut: This is one of the reasons she joined Rias's group: she calls Baraqiel out for not being able to save Shuri and is initially unwilling to forgive him.
* CasualKink: Yes, she likes BDSM. One of the bonus artworks for the Blu-Ray releases even shows her tied up in a traditional ''shibari'' style.
* CatchPhrase: She often quips, "Oh my...[[note]]Ara ara...[[/note]]", before giving out a cheerful chuckle.
* CatFight: She does this with Rias a lot once she falls for Issei too.
%% * ChefOfIron
* ChildOfForbiddenLove: Akeno was born to Baraqiel, a Fallen Angel Cadre, and Shuri Himejima, a miko of the Himejima family. Due to Himejima's oath of service to the Shinto Gods, it was forbidden to mate with other species especially those that were considered heathens. Akeno's Nephilim heritage was the reason why the Himejima clan exiled and later killed her mother.
* ChildishPillowFight: Gets into one with Rias as the two quarrel over Issei, after she moves into Issei's house.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Though she usually teases Rias and others, even Akeno isn't above getting jealous over Issei. Though instead of getting mad, Akeno is rather soft-hearted in this regard, an example being in Volume 17 when Issei posed as Rossweisse's boyfriend, Akeno left the room with a pained expression on her face. See below.
* CombatSadomasochist: She takes a great deal of pleasure from inflicting pain on others, and her primary method of doing this is in her combat support role as Rias Gremory's Queen.
* CoolBigSis: To the Occult Research Group and by extension, to the Academy.
* {{Cosplay}}: Akeno has an interest in cosplay, often dressing up in revealing outfits to seduce Issei.
* CynicismCatalyst: Just like what happened with Issei, Shuri's death at the hands of her relatives led to her becoming disillusioned with the Fallen Angels, including Azazel. She eventually reconciles with them around the time of Loki's defeat.
* DaddysGirl: When she was younger, she would fawn over Baraqiel and was very clingy to him. This stopped after Shuri's death caused Akeno to hit the DespairEventHorizon. After reconciling, Akeno is shown to get along with her father though she likes to tease him such as pretending to still be angry at him or telling him that she would cheer for Issei instead of him during the Rating Game between the two.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Oh ye ''gods''. Her's is possibly the worst of the bunch. Her priestess mother, Shuri Himejima, was killed by her ''own relatives'' from the Himejima Clan when she was a child. Akeno crossed the DespairEventHorizon and [[CallingTheOldManOut called out Baraqiel]], her Fallen Angel father, for [[MyGreatestFailure not being able to protect Shuri]]. After Shuri's death, she stayed with her mother's relative before being removed due to her Fallen Angel blood. Without food or money and [[YouCantGoHomeAgain finding herself unable to go home again]], Akeno [[TheExile went into exile]] and [[WalkingTheEarth journeyed throughout Japan]] using her skills to purify evil spirits that she learned from her mother to survive, doing so for a year-and-a-half. When she stumbled into a certain town, Akeno indirectly saved a human that was contracted with a Devil from the Gremory Clan. Fearing that the Devil would kill her due to her Fallen Angel heritage, Akeno decided to hide from them. Later, while trying to leave the town, Akeno was suddenly attacked again by her relatives who came to kill her. Before her great-uncle could [[ThwartedCoupDeGrace deliver the coup de grâce]], Rias and her father's Bishop, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, appeared and talked Akeno's family out of killing her. Akeno was transformed into a devil, moved into the Gremory Palace and eventually became Rias's close confidante and NumberTwo in the Occult Research Club.
* DespairEventHorizon: She crossed it ''years'' ago when she witnessed Shuri Himejima's murder by her own relatives. She crosses it again in volume 12 when she thought Issei died.
* DespairSpeech: In volume 7, Akeno laments to Issei that Baraqiel should never have left her to fend for herself after Shuri's demise. She can't even call Baraqiel her father ever since.
* DevotedToYou: Akeno is deeply in love with and devoted to Issei, with it being shown that his presence, including something happening to him or his absence, can greatly affect her mental state, such as being angry when he was defeated in a Rating Game, being sad when he had to leave for a field trp in Kyoto, or going catatonic after Issei was presumed dead. While it's shown that she is very calm with the harem situation around Issei, Akeno is noted to fall into a depression if she truly believes that Issei is taken away from her.
* DissonantSerenity: How could she be ''giggling'' after killing someone?!
* TheDividual: With Rias in nature. From narrative perspective is clear that they are intended to work as an indivisible combo for all kind of actions. Yes, even (or maybe especially) [[ThreeWaySex that ones]].
* DoesNotLikeMen: She is implied by Rias to hate the other sex ([[SingleTargetSexuality except Issei]]) during their CatFight in Volume 4. [[JustifiedTrope It's not hard to see why]], given her DarkAndTroubledPast and her strained relationship with Baraqiel. However, due to her never being hostile towards any males outside of antagonists, and initially Azazel and her father on the basis that they're Fallen Angels without any regard to their sex, this is an InformedAttribute.
%%* {{Dominatrix}}: She invokes this for some of her contracted 'clients'.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: PlayedForDrama at the start of Volume 12, following Issei's (temporary) death. PlayedForLaughs in the {{Hot Springs|Episode}} short story, when she walks in on Grayfia and Issei, coming to the assumption that she [[NotWhatItLooksLike has a "real affair"]] with him, and drops on the floor with hollow eyes.
* ElementalPowers
** ShockAndAwe: She can zap enemies with her lighting.
** LightEmUp: Her Holy Lightning, which she inherited from her father. She initially hates using these powers until Issei convinces her otherwise.
* EroticDream: She tends to dream of her and Issei having sex.
* TheExile: The double blow of losing Shuri and [[CallingTheOldManOut calling out Baraqiel]] for [[MyGreatestFailure failing to save her mother]] (which Azazel also feels directly responsible for, since Baraqiel effectively served as his second-in-command and wasn't around at the time of Shuri's death) caused her to go into exile for nearly two years, disappearing from almost everything except for purifying evil spirits. However, after healing a devil belonging to the Gremory family, Rias would soon find her.
* EyesAlwaysShut: She sometimes keeps her eyes closed whenever she tries to seduce Issei.
* FantasticRacism: Originally, Akeno had a very low opinion on Fallen Angels. Then again, considering that Shuri was murdered by her own relatives when Azazel sent Baraqiel on a mission, Akeno called out Baraqiel for not being able to save her mother, ''and'' she went into exile after that, her views are understandable.
* FirstKiss: She gives hers to Issei in volume 7.
* TheGadfly: She likes teasing people in various ways. Her favorite is to tease Rias over Akeno's own closeness with Issei and that Akeno will have an affair with him behind Rias' back, much to Rias' frustration.
* HairAntennae: A rather unique variant in which they slope backward, rather than forwards.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Her mother Shuri was a human Shinto priestess, while her father Baraqiel was a Fallen Angel.
* HatesTheirParent: Akeno despises her father Baraqiel ever since [[MyGreatestFailure he failed to save Shuri]] from being murdered by the Himejima clan. However, she eventually reconciles with him once Issei learns her true feelings.
* HeartbrokenBadass: The loss of her mother has sent her into a HeroicBSOD, but she crawls out over it by the time of volume 7. She goes through it again when in volume 12 when she thought Issei was killed and was very [[TranquilFury determined]] to get the one's responsible.
* TheHermit: After losing Shuri at the hands of her ''own'' relatives, she retreated into complete isolation for one year.
* HeroicSeductress: Rias comments that Akeno would make an excellent succubus. Noted that she only desires to sex up Issei.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: She refers to Rias as her best friend.
* HiddenDepths: Despite being a tease-happy sadomasochist on the surface, Akeno is surprisingly innocent when it comes to having a true relationship, which stems from both her terrible past and [[YamatoNadeshiko dutiful personality]].
* HopeSpot: She gives one towards the [[MesACrowd Issei clones]] before decimating them with her magic.
* IAmNotMyFather: She tries to not make the same mistakes her father did during her childhood.
* IdolSinger: She practices singing the Oppai Dragon song to become a songstress for the show.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: An odd variant; while Akeno prefers being dominant in S&M sessions, much like in her bonding[=/=]reconciliation moment with her father, Issei is the only one allowed to see her masochistic side when the time comes.
* IHateYouVampireDad: She clearly hated Baraqiel for not being able to save Shuri when the latter was killed, doing so to preserve her sanity.
* ImageSong: [[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1rgoVZro_7U Kurokami BEGIN TALE]]
* InformedAttribute: Despite Rias insisting that DoesNotLikeMen and therefore shouldn't be fighting with her over Issei, the only non-antagonistic males she has shown overt hostility toward ([[CharacterDevelopment initially]]) are Azazel and her father, which has more to do with them being Fallen Angels than their sex.
* ItRunsInTheFamily: Technically, Akeno is a sadomasochist, meaning she can switch between being the giver or taker depending on the situation. She got the masochism from her father and the sadism from her mother. She also inherited the Holy Lightning from her father.
* ItsPersonal: She wants to exact revenge against the Khaos Brigade after thinking they killed Issei.
* TheLancer: In as much as Rias is The Hero due to her status as a Deuteragonist, Akeno is this. She's always smiling, especially [[CombatSadomasochist in combat]]; she takes actions Rias would, sometimes without telling her beforehand to avoid the debate that would ensue, and she's never above flirting with Issei to get a rise out of Rias, especially after they've both fallen for him.
* LecherousLicking: She elevates this trope into an art form, sucking out Issei's excess Dragon energy as erotically as possible. She also likes to lick her lips while sadistically zapping her enemies.
* LegFocus: As the second-most prominent MsFanservice after Rias, she too has numerous scenes dedicated to highlighting her amply curvy legs, and being TheTease means she often poses to display them.
* LineageComesFromTheFather: She inherited her ShockAndAwe powers and FallenAngel wings from Baraqiel.
* LongLostRelative: She's related to SLASHDØG protagonist Tobio Ikuse by blood since his grandmother was a Himejima, making him her distant cousin.
* MarryThemAll: {{Zigzagged|Trope}} in her case. Baraqiel criticizes Issei [[spoiler: during their Rating Game match in Volume 22]] for choosing Rias over Akeno, prompting Issei to declare that he will make ''all'' of the women who love him happy and shout out that he loves Akeno to the whole stadium (mirroring how he declares his love for Rias in Volume 10). Whether or not this counts as a proposal is debatable, as he only singles Akeno out because the whole thing was brought up by ''her father'', but Akeno herself later says that marriage isn't necessary (because [[TheMistress she thinks affairs are sexy]], and you can't have much of an affair with your own husband...)
* MatchmakerCrush: Akeno is shown to support Issei's relationship with Rias, though it doesn't stop her from seducing him herself or trying to have sex with him.
* {{Miko}}: Dresses as one when it's time to get really serious. She inherited it from her mother.
* MissingMom: Akeno's mother, Shuri, died during her childhood.
* TheMistress: What she wants to be for Issei. She actively pursues this. Rias is very aware of her "plan" and is ''not'' happy. She is crushed when [[NotWhatItLooksLike it seems]] that Grayfia is one for Issei.
* MsFanservice: Female Fallen Angels are renowned for having very seductive bodies and Akeno's naturally sexy disposition, plus having the largest breast size in the series, only enhances this fact. Azazel himself stated that Akeno was particularly seductive even for a Fallen Angel.
* NakedApron: She wears on in an OVA during her competition with Rias to seduce Issei by acting as a cheating wife.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: A {{miko}} who is also a Fallen Angel and a Devil.
* NomDeMom: She goes by her mother's last name, Himejima, since Baraqiel has no last name.
* NumberTwo: She is the first servant and friend Rias made in the human world, as well as the Occult Research Club's Vice-President.
* OneeSama: Along with Rias, Akeno's referred to as one of the "Two Great Ladies of Kuoh Academy".
* PassingTheTorch: After Akeno's graduation, Kiba replaces her as the club's vice president.
* PlayingCardMotifs: In the ending theme of the Season 1 anime, Akeno is shown as the Queen.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: Says this tearfully to Issei after seeing him return from near-death.
* PutTheLaughterInSlaughter: She has a habit of laughing or giggling while engaging in violence. But, most prominently, when Issei offers to take her out on a date as a reward for defeating an opponent, Akeno's immediate reaction is to explode in power while giggling uncontrollably.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: She has black hair and white skin.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Akeno, as the club's vice-president, is sound in judgment and willing to listen to her friends in the ORC as well as Azazel, even when she initially doesn't trust him.
* RedBaron: "[[{{Miko}} Priestess]] of Thunder", and later "Priestess of Lightning" after mastering Holy Lightning.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue Oni to Rias' Red Oni.
* RomanticizedAbuse: A bonafide sadist, unless it's Issei, at which point she becomes the masochist for him and only him.
* SexIsViolence: Akeno ''really enjoys combat''. Some of the expressions she wears in the manga go well beyond "suggestive".
** This is one of the few things that had to be {{bowdlerise}}d in the anime. During the first fight against a stray devil, Rias tell Akeno to back off when she starts torturing it. In the novel, Rias just stands back and waits for Akeno to "calm down".
* {{Sexophone}}: Ryosuke Nakanishi's {{leitmotif}} for Akeno in the anime is a calm, jazzy saxophone piece. This is nearly played straight in ''New'' when Issei has to have his excess dragon ki [[IntimateHealing "removed" by Akeno]]. As soon as she enters the room, the leitmotif starts... Plenty of [[VisualInnuendo sucking]] to be had.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Akeno, being Nephilim, is very much in touch with her perverted side and has no problem showing off her body in general, but especially for Issei.
* SingleTargetSexuality: She loves only Issei, but doesn't mind sharing him with other girls.
* SkinshipGrope: Gropes Rias at the swimming pool of the Gremory household. She also gives quite a few to Issei as well.
* SinsOfOurFathers: Many of Akeno's relatives are appalled by the discovery that Akeno is a Nephilim.
* SmugSuper: Always puts up a smile in battle.
* SoftSpokenSadist: Even though she's definitely one of the good guys.
* SpitTrailKiss: She gives one to Issei in his daydream in the first season's second short; bonus points for being a {{CPR|Clean Pretty Reliable}}. [[spoiler:She then gives him one for real in Volume 22.]]
* StepfordSmiler: She can be a smiling and cheerful girl. However, bring up her DarkAndTroubledPast or harm Issei, and she'll electrocute you to death.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her Fallen Angel Mode has skimpy clothes.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks almost exactly like her mother Shuri, especially in her later years.
* TaremeEyes: Her eyes are large and droopy.
* TheTease: Oh so ''much''. As this is her default setting, even normally innocent teasing can be taken as flirty. Azazel noted that for someone with Fallen Angel blood in her, a race that is naturally very seductive already, she is ''extremely'' seductive.
** As her love for Issei blossoms, she eventually no longer teases him, but flirts with a genuine desire for furthering her relationship with him.
* TechnicolorEyes: She has violet eyes, which hints at her being a Nephilim.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Many scenes (mostly anime-original) involving the girls getting victimized in lewd ways (like slime dissolving their clothing, or monsters with tentacles) have her enjoying the experience.
* TraumaButton: Her PTSD is triggered the moment she hears from Kokabiel that she is the daughter of Baraqiel in Volume 3 and later when she meets her father face-to-face by the time of Volume 7.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Though not his "Official Girlfriend" like Rias, Akeno will be prepared to zap you if Issei gets injured.
* VirginPower: She took advantage of this to lure the {{Unicorn}} go near her. [[HilarityEnsues She then smacks said unicorn and the group takes the unicorn's horn.]]
* WalkingTheEarth: After Shuri's death, Akeno uses her powers to help people while traveling throughout Japan. That is until she heals a devil that belongs to the Gremory Clan and befriends Rias...
* WhatBeautifulEyes: [[http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/highschooldxd/images/9/94/Akeno_early_season_3.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150319001011 Look for yourself.]] (slightly NSFW)
* YamatoNadeshiko: When not in sadist mode, Akeno comes off as an ideal Japanese woman due to her long black hair and gentle smile. Not to mention she is a great cook like Asia and Rias and her politeness and devotion to Issei and her teammates. In fact, Issei refers to her as such when he first saw her in the club building in Volume 1. However, Akeno has a fragile personality as she "depends" on men due to her sad past.
* YinYangBomb: She is a Nephilim turned Demon.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: After Shuri's death, Akeno's unable to return to her family due to her Fallen Angel blood. [[spoiler: Shin High School D×D: Volume 2 Life.4 Middle Game reveals that Suzaku Himejima let her go to Himejima house to strengthen the power she inherited from her mother.]]
* YoureNotMyFather: Akeno is unwilling to forgive Baraqiel for [[MyGreatestFailure not being able to save Shuri]] and understandably refuses to think of him as her father. Fortunately, with Issei's help, they reconcile by Volume 7.

--> ''I seriously won’t know what will happen when I am within this group.''

Yuto Kiba is the school prince of Kuoh Academy and Issei's self-proclaimed best friend. He was the lone survivor of a failed project which used a group of children to wield holy swords and swore revenge on those who disposed of him and his friends.

----
* AmbiguouslyGay: A lot of his later interaction with Issei puts his true sexuality in question (at least in the latter's head).
* AnArmAndALeg: In Volume 12, Siegfried cuts off his left arm, but Koneko, Ravel, and Asia help reattach it.
* ApologeticAttacker: Apologizes to his enemies whenever Issei breaks out a new perverted technique, much to the latter's frustration.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: He is a MasterSwordsman and eventually gets promoted to the Club's Vice-President by the end of Volume 20.
* TheAtoner: For participating in the Holy Sword Project in which his friends were killed during the experiments.
* AttractiveBentGender: In one Volume 13 short story, to Issei's horror, he realizes "Yumi" is [[HasAType his type of girl]].
* BashBrothers: He and Issei are this whenever they fight together.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Kiba is polite to pretty much everyone, even when Issei is still a GreenEyedMonster regarding popularity among girls, but the former is furious at how the corrupt clergy had killed his friends in failed experiments to save face.
* {{Bishonen}}: He's the pretty boy of the group. Lampshaded by Issei himself, who nicknames him "Pretty Boy Prince".
* BondOneLiner: Delivers an epic one to Freed, after [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice impaling the latter's head with his sword]]. Issei grudgingly admits how cool it sounded.
-->'''Kiba:''' "You can continue howling to the Grim Reaper in Hell."
* BrokenAce: Has lots of fangirls compared to the unpopular Issei, plus he is intelligent and quite powerful. Despite his cool appearance, it is shown in Volume 3 that Kiba has an obsession with revenge, which makes him hot-tempered and irrational.
* BrokenBird: Kiba is a male example, in which he still feels the pain of being experimented upon back during his childhood, even well into adolescence.
* BrokenHero: He is a calm, confident and skillful Knight. His perpetual smile and collected demeanor hide the fact that he is the only survivor of the Church's Excalibur experiments, which were so brutal that left him traumatized and killed all his friends when he was a mere child and to top it off, he is an artificial human without a sense of self-worth; he is so deeply loyal to Rias simply because he has nothing else to hold on, something that Rias knows but is unable to fix. He admits to it in the Kokabiel arc. Though it gets kinda fixed with Issei and Koneko's friendship (with a healthy dose of Rias's ToughLove to help).
* BrosBeforeHoes: This is the [[AlternateCharacterInterpretation counterargument]] to Kiba's HoYay tendencies. It may cross with BromanticFoil.
* CastFromHitPoints: A downside of Gram is that it can trim away at the user's lifespan it overused.
* ChickMagnet: He's popular with the girls at Kuoh Academy. His role as Darkness Knight Fang in the "Grabbin' Dragon" show garners a lot of attention from young mothers who watch with their children.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Tosca after he is reunited with her as one of the survivors of the Holy Sword project.
%% * CovertPervert
* CynicismCatalyst: His participation in "The Holy Sword Project" caused him to become disillusioned with the Holy Swords in general.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He was originally called Isaiah, and was taken in by the Church and was chosen to be a part of a project called "The Holy Sword Project" supervised by Valper Galilei which led to the deaths of all of his friends and other participants when Valper [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness decided to eliminate them]], resulting in the latter's hatred of the Holy Swords namely Excalibur. After successfully escaping the facility with the help of his friends, he finally succumbed to the poison he inhaled. Lying on the ground, he was then found by Rias.
* DefrostingIceKing: During his initial days as Rias's servant, Isaiah was distrustful of Rias and all those related to her. One day, when giving tribute to his deceased friends, he was confronted by a stray Devil and fought a hard battle until his master, Okita, came to rescue him. After this event, he finally opened up to Rias and took up the name Rias thought of specifically for him, "Yuuto Kiba".
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Half of the series's point of view is through his eyes whenever Issei is not available.
* DualWielding: And sometimes, ''[[CutlassBetweenTheTeeth triple]]'' wielding.
* EffeminateVoice: Fitting his gentle disposition, he has a notably campy tone of voice compared to the more boyish-sounding Issei.
* ElementalPowers: "Sword Birth" can create magic swords that can have many elemental properties.
** PlayingWithFire
** AnIcePerson: Flame Delete
** CastingAShadow: Holy Eraser
*** Took this trope literally in Volume 12 when he briefly wields Issei's Ascalon, a holy sword, and Siegfried's Gram, a demonic sword.
* FirstPersonSmartass: Not as much as Issei, but he does have his moments whenever he narrates.
* FromZeroToHero: He starts as a nameless orphan who eventually becomes a MasterSwordsman and a devil for the Occult Research Club.
* FragileSpeedster: By his own admission. And Issei points out later that Kiba's not blocking his attacks anymore whenever they spar.
* GenderBender: In one Volume 13 short story, the group (minus Issei) underwent a gender change via Azazel's gender-swapping raygun.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: He tells Issei to calm down and stay focused after he gets enraged due to Rizevim kidnapping his parents and having Ophis attacked, using the same words that Issei told him before facing Ewald. Issei thanks him but Kiba thinks that he should ThinkNothingOfIt, due to the many times Issei helped him.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: While he initially has a hidden edge due to past trauma, Kiba has consistently been shown to be a kind and courteous gentlemen, with this becoming fully genuine after Issei and Co. help him through his issues. He also has a decent mop of short blonde hair.
* HandicappedBadass: Had one of his arms sliced off by Siegfried. He still kept on going, especially after Siegfried pushed his buttons.
* HeroicWillpower: He keeps fighting Siegfried, even after the latter cuts off his arm due to him being inspired by the promise he made with Issei. It also managed to trigger a reaction in Issei's Evil Piece that allowed it to turn into Issei's Holy Sword; Ascalon.
* HeartbrokenBadass: The loss of his friends in the Holy Sword Project sent him into a HeroicBSOD.
* HeroesPreferSwords: He uses swords as his primary weapons.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: It is noted that Kiba does show ''some'' interest in the opposite sex, he just considers his friendship with Issei more important.
* HiddenDepths: He owns a cooking vlog, called "Handsome Dude Does Cooking", that he manages in his spare time. Predictably, it's very popular among females.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: During his spar with Xenovia in Volume 3, his anger toward the Excalibur fragments she and Irina were wielding leads to him irrationally whipping out a {{BFS}} for brute force. Xenovia easily defeats him afterwards, pointing out that creating such a large sword cut down his vaunted speed.
* IdiotHair: Easy to miss, but he does have a strand.
* IOweYouMyLife: After Issei rescues him, he becomes indebted to him.
* ItsPersonal: He wants to avenge his friends' deaths due to them being killed in the Holy Sword project.
* IShallTauntYou: He uses this to his advantage during his fight against Sonneillon, making him angry so that he starts attacking recklessly, thus making his attacks miss.
* LikeBrotherAndSister:
** Has this relationship with Koneko.
** He later acknowledged Rias as a CoolBigSis.
* MasterSwordsman: He attained the title of ''Shihan'' (Assistant Grand Master) courtesy of his mentor, Okita Soji's Tennen Rishin Ryu.
* MentorArchetype: He trains Issei's children in the future, most notably Zen and Ex.
* MesACrowd: His ''second'' Sacred Gear when it was known that a user only gets to use one Sacred Gear at most.
* MidSeasonUpgrade:
** The first one was the ability to use a second Sacred Gear; Blade Blacksmith, which is a holy sword counterpart of his original Sacred Gear; Sword Birth.
** The second is Gram and the other Demon Swords he acquired after he defeated Siegfried.
* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: While Yuto is very AmbiguouslyGay as a male, when he gender bends to Yumi, the attraction towards Issei is that much more apparent.
* MrFanservice: Unlike Issei, Yuuto's body is [[https://www.deviantart.com/francis526/art/Yuuto-Kiba-High-School-DxD-1-945992122 very muscular and fit]] from the start, plus he wears a pretty tight speedo when swimming or at the beach.
* NiceGuy: Despite Issei's initial rudeness towards him, he still is as polite and encourages Issei more so than the rest of the Occult Club except for Rias.
* ObliviousToLove: He's as clueless as your standard shounen protagonist.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: "Yuto Kiba" is the name Rias gave him. Before that, he was called "[[SpellMyNamewithanS Izaiya/Isaiah"]] as his CodeName during the Holy Sword Project stint.
* OnlySaneMan: Considering that his fellow club members are a [[LovableSexManiac notorious pervert]], [[AllWomenAreLustful a group of girls who'll eagerly jump over each other to appeal to said pervert's desires]], and an (initially) [[{{Hikikomori}} extremely reclusive]] crossdresser, Kiba comes off as pretty down-to-earth in comparison. One noteworthy example is when the [[DatePeepers club members were spying]] on Issei's date with Akeno. He was the only one who didn't bother with a ridiculous PaperThinDisguise (like a hat with sunglasses, or wrestler mask) or trying to remain hidden, and waved a hand at him as if he was saying "sorry about this".
* ParentalSubstitute: Issei's future children look up to him as a father figure due to always being there for them while their actual father is a celebrity and never home.
* PersonalityPowers: He was trained to be a swordsman and hates Holy Swords at first - his Sacred Gear creates Demon Swords, their demonic counterpart. When he gets his Balance Breaker, the Sword of Betrayer by accepting his friends' deaths, moving forward and abandoning his hate for the Holy Swords, he can create a Holy Swords that doesn't harm Devils.
* PlayingCardMotifs: In the ending theme of the Season 1 anime, there's a playing card theme, and Kiba is shown as the Ace of Spades.
* ThePromise: Issei made him promise that if one of them dies, then they'll have to fight harder for the sake of the one who died. And then Issei did die ([[DeathIsCheap temporarily]]), making Kiba fulfill that promise.
* PositiveFriendInfluence: Thanks to Issei's help and overcoming Excalibur twice (first by defeating Freed Sellzen who was wielding the Fused Excalibur and later defeating Ewald Cristaldi, a master Excalibur wielder), Kiba has let go of his vengeance, choosing to focus on protecting his new comrades.
* RankUp: After Akeno's graduation, Kiba takes her place as the ORC's vice-president.
* RealMenWearPink: He is noted to be a perfect gentleman and a very skilled cook. His dream after graduating from school is to open a cake shop.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Issei's red.
* {{Revenge}}: His reason for becoming a devil under Rias' service is to find and destroy all the holy swords.
* RevengeBeforeReason: Kiba can become very irrational when angry, to the point it severely hinders his skills. After learning his lesson, he keeps Issei away from this trope in Volume 20 when Qlippoth kidnaps his parents and brutalizes Ophis.
* RonTheDeathEater: A very rare InUniverse example. Darkness Knight Fang, the BigBad of the "Grabbin' Dragon" series, is based upon Kiba. Hilariously, his devil fanbase turns it right around into a DracoInLeatherPants.
* SchoolIdol: Known as the school prince of Kuoh Academy.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: He escapes from "The Holy Sword Project" once his friends are killed. By volume 3, he decides to leave Rias's team behind to avenge his friends' death.
* SobriquetSexSwitch: In one Volume 13 short story, Yuuto turns into a girl named "Yumi".
* SpontaneousWeaponCreation: His Sacred Gear, Sword Birth, allows him to create numerous Demon Swords of different attributes according to his will.
* StepfordSmiler: Throughout the first part of volume 12, coping with Issei's apparent death better than the girls, though he was still clearly devastated.
* SurvivorGuilt: Due to being the sole survivor of the "Holy Sword Project".
* SwitchingPOV: This trope occurs in several chapters of the Light Novels where the story is told from his viewpoint over Issei's; the switches are usually for chapters that aren't titled ''Life''.
* TraumaButton: Any kind of holy swords or mention of the Holy Sword Project will trigger an attack of PTSD. He gets over it by the end of volume 3.
* UnwittingPawn: For "The Holy Sword Project", which involved all of his friends getting killed trying to wield the swords.
* WeakButSkilled: Let's have a checklist: excluding Asia, his best friend is the incarnation of destructive power and all-around badass, his president and vice-president can mow down armies, his fellow club member can create explosions from her {{BFS}}, his two juniors, one capable of punching somebody so hard they get knocked out and the other being able to stop time, and his teacher can bombard enemies with magic. Him? Sure he can create any kinds of swords from out of nothing, but other than that, he mostly uses his speed. And yet he's the second most powerful member of the group. He lampshades that he's the only technique user in a group full of power-types.
** This has begun to change after volume 12 where he gets control of Gram and the other demonic swords that Siegfried possesses. While he is their owner, using Gram puts a strain on him, limiting his ability to use his brand new BFS in a fight, but he is slowly getting to the point where he will be both strong ''and'' skilled. In contrast, Xenovia starts considering the use of techniques after volume 14 so she, too, might reach his level someday.
* WhamLine: At the end of Volume 11.
-->'''Kiba:''' "That day, we lost Issei."
* WhatTheHellHero: There is a played for laughs example during the Rating Game with the House of Phoenix, when he first witnessed Issei's Dress Break. He apologizes to his current opponent for his teammate's perversion, irritating Issei.
* YinYangBomb: His Balance Breaker, Sword of Betrayer, is both a Holy and Demonic sword.

--> ''...Are you thinking of lecherous stuff again, Ise-senpai?''

Koneko Tojo is a nekomata and Kuoh Academy's mascot. She's in the care of the House of Gremory. Her real name is Shirone and she is the sister of Kuroka, who killed their master in self-defense after being subjected to experiments.

----
* ACupAngst: She reacts violently when Freed calls her a "little girl." She goes into a chilling TranquilFury when she hears Issei praise a demon plant that produces fruit that makes women's breasts bigger. She explains that she feels this way about herself when offering to [[IntimateHealing restore Issei's lifespan with senjutsu via sex]].
* AfraidOfTheirOwnStrength: She is afraid of using her Nekomata powers because she fears they will go out of control like it happened with her sister (or so she thinks).
* AnimalJingoism: She has a cat motif, while Ravel has a bird motif; cats and birds [[VitriolicBestBuds generally get along poorly]].
* AnimalMotifs: As part of her cat motif, her true form has a tail and cat ears.
* ArentYouGoingToRavishMe: Despite having a strong dislike for perverted behavior, in volume 3, she states that not being looked at pervertedly gives her complex feelings.
* BabiesEverAfter: In the future, she has a daughter with Issei, named Shirayuki.
* BadassAdorable: She may be adorable, but she has some fight left in her.
* BakenekoAndNekomata: Whenever necessary, Koneko can transform into her true form: a less humanoid nekomata with cat ears and white tails.
* BigEater: She's nearly always seen snacking, to the point people worry when she goes a whole train ride without a bite to eat. Despite this, she maintains a tiny frame. Those feats of insane strength must be pretty good at burning calories.
* BrokenBird: After her sister (allegedly) went berserk and killed her master, she was hunted down out of fear that she’d also lose control of herself. Rias saved her by making her part of her peerage, but her pursuers as well as her sister’s abandonment left her near-emotionless and afraid to tap into her natural Nekomata abilities for some time.
* CainAndAbel: She is the Abel to her sister Kuroka's Cain. Subverted, when it is later discovered that Kuroka killed her former master to protect Koneko from being experimented on.
* CantCatchUp: This is a major part of Volume 5, made worse by how the only way she feels she can catch up is to use her Nekomata powers which at the time she was too afraid to use.
* CatchphraseInsult: Koneko says "You're the worst" whenever Issei reaches a new level of perversion.
* CatsAreSnarkers: She may be a nekomata, but she has a sarcastic and witty personality.
* CatGirl: In thematic appearance as well as actual lineage.
* CharacterDevelopment: She used to get angry over any of Issei's perverted antics and invokes PervertRevengeMode on him. Now she gets fussy only when his perverseness isn't directed towards ''her''.
* ChildLikeVoice: Koneko is notable for having a child-like appearance compared to her more well-endowed peers, Rias and Akeno, and has a very high, endearing voice to match that appearance.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Can get jealous when Kuroka, Ravel, or the rest of the girls get too close to Issei.
* CrutchCharacter: She ends up as the weakest combat unit and eventually asks Kuroka for help to get stronger.
* CuteBruiser: Don't let her cuteness fool you, she can still kick your ass when she has to.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: After losing her parents, she and her older sister, Kuroka, were later taken in by a Devil who reincarnated her sister as one of the members of his peerage. However, Kuroka's power as a Nekomata supposedly soon grew out of control, eventually causing her to kill her master and become a Stray Devil. Following the incident and the failed manhunt that came after, Shirone was sentenced to death by the Devils in hopes of preventing another incident like Kuroka's from happening. However, Sirzechs Lucifer protected her and left her under his sister Rias's care.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Initially harsh to Issei, witnessing his determination and strength eventually helps her warm up to him, to the point where she falls in love with him and once suggested having sex with him.
* DubPersonalityChange: At least in the first season, her personality is far more indifferent and snarky in the dub. For example, when Issei and Kiba are about to head to a church to save Asia, they ask Koneko if she'll come. In the original, she responds that she'd be too worried to let them go alone. In the dub, she says she's got nothing better to do in a nearly sarcastic tone.
* EtTuBrute: Her reaction to Kuroka double-crossing her after she killed their abusive master is of utter shock.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Koneko made it clear that she was unwilling to forgive Ravel for causing trouble to Issei and Rias during their Rating Game, but they eventually befriend each other over time.
* FanservicePack: In the later anime adaptations, she's given a significantly larger bust than what she has in the manga and novel illustrations.
* FantasticSlurs: She often calls Ravel a "wussy roast chicken princess" to the latter's annoyance.
* FirstKiss: She shares her first kiss with Issei by the end of Volume 24.
* FullContactMagic: After she embraces her Nekomata heritage, she learns to combine Senjutsu and Youjutsu with her original hand-to-hand combat, enhancing her strength and inducing more internal damage to her opponents.
* GlacierWaif: Contrary to her small stature, her status as a Rook gives her specialization in brute force.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Her mother was a nekomata, while her father was a human. However, nekomata offspring with humans are still full-blooded nekomata.
* HairIntakes: Befitting her cat motif, her hairdo has a pair of "cat ears". Her true nekomata form has actual cat ears.
* HeroicRROD: Her [[SuperMode Shirone mode]] counts as after a few minutes she is exhausted. Although Azazel claims that with time, it won't be a problem.
* HiddenDepths: She's a fan of rapping and shows it off to Issei.
* ImageSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IppblfVEiY Jounetsu-Unbalance]]
* IntimateHealing: She does this for Issei to recover his lifespan. The fact that she does it happily is a sign of her growing feelings for him.
* IShallTauntYou: She had no problems taunting Ravel by referring to her as a wussy roast chicken princess.
* ItWasAGift: One of her cat hair clips is from Rias, while the other is from her mother [[OrphansPlotTrinket and contains data about producing Super Devils.]]
* JailbaitWait: Issei {{invoke|d Trope}}s this on her for her own safety, because were she to have a child with him at her current size, it would spell disaster for her and their unborn child.
* LadySwearsALot: The anime's English dub gives her an even fouler mouth than Issei, which reaches [[CountryMatters new heights]] when it comes to her rivalry with Ravel. Ironically, she tends to use polite ''keigo'' in the Japanese version.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: She and Kiba have no romantic attraction to each other, but both of them are still incredibly close, with Koneko personally being incredibly worried and determined to help during Kiba's RevengeBeforeReason episode.
* LittleBitBeastly: In her Nekomata form, she grows a pair of white cat ears and a pair of matching white tails.
* LittleMissBadass: She might be 138 cm/4'6[=''=], but she is a Rook and isn't [[GoodIsNotSoft someone you want to mess with]].
* LittleMissSnarker: She's the shortest girl in the main cast, has a dry wit and often speaks in a deadpan tone.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Koneko's is the Masculine Girl to Gasper Feminine Boy. Koneko is the PintSizedPowerhouse while Gasper is the WholesomeCrossdresser.
* MatingSeasonMayhem: Goes into heat just like a cat. Unusually for the trope, the fact this is her instinctively trying to get pregnant is actually addressed and, with her tiny frame, acknowledged as a bad thing.
* MeaningfulRename: In Volume 24, she takes back her original name Shirone but keeps her surname Toujou and she still uses Koneko as another name.
* MightyGlacier: She has some of the highest direct physical strength in the Occult Research Club, and the only one that comes close to matching her in toughness is Issei, but her mobility is extremely lacking, causing her to have difficulties against flying opponents and those light on their feet.
* MyInstinctsAreShowing: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]]. She actually seems to enjoy letting her catlike side out and using [[VerbalTic meows]] now and then, but suppressed it out of fear over her powers. Despite coming to terms with herself, she still only lets them show in private in front of Issei.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Her white hair hints at her supernatural nature as a Nekomata.
* TheNicknamer: She refers to Ravel as "roast chicken", given the latter's animal motif is the Phoenix.
* OlderThanSheLooks: Just like all the devils reincarnated before the series began, but she gets bonus points for looking like a particularly small underclassman.
* OneHeadTaller: With Issei, who is 170 cm/5'7[=''=], while she's only 138 cm/4'6[=''=].
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Koneko isn't her real name, rather it's Shirone.
* ParentalAbandonment: She and Kuroka lost their parents as children. [[spoiler:Volume 24 reveals that it was even worse than that, and their father really never even acknowledged them as his children, but rather thought of them no more than as kittens a pet cat may have.]]
* PervertRevengeMode: She has limited tolerance for Issei's perverted nature because she's well aware of his antics. She grows out of it though once she falls in love with him. She even wanted to help recover his pervertedness when he lost it because she didn't want him to lose interest in her.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Her small size is inversely proportionate to her titanic strength. This is justified because her [[ChessMotifs Evil Piece]] is a Rook, which gives her incredible strength and defense.
* PlayingCardMotifs: In the ending theme of the anime's first season, Koneko is shown as the Jack.
* TheQuietOne: She usually doesn't talk and if she does is to [[LittleMissSnarker snark]].
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: She gives one to Ravel in volume 10 when, after they meet again, she reminds her of what she did to Issei and Rias. This doesn't sit well with Ravel.
* ReiAyanamiExpy: Pale skin, short white hair, golden eyes, petite, is not human, appears cold and soft-spoken and eventually warms up to the main character.
* SexierAlterEgo: Her Shirone Mode transformation is noted to be much more attractive then her normal state, due to being taller and possessing a bigger bust. Issei notes that Koneko will resemble her Shirone Mode when she grows up, much to his excitement.
* ShakingTheRump: In the first season's ending, even reaching MemeticMutation levels.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: Gain the ability to transform into an OlderAlterEgo, called "Shirone Mode", which allows he to fully utilize her Nekomata power. It is noted that she resembles her sister Kuroka in terms of appearance, height and bust size, with the only difference being their hairstyles and hair color.
* SiblingYinYang: With Kuroka. They even have contrasting hair colors.
* SignatureHeadgear: It's only fitting that the resident CatGirl wears a black cat-shaped hair clip on both sides of her hair.
* SoulPower: Senjutsu in a nutshell. It's not as destructive as demonic power or magic, but can slip past the opponent's defenses and damage their life force.
* TheStoic: Speaks in a deadpan tone, usually preceded by ellipses in the light novels, and most events don't impact her much.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She appears cold, distant, and snarky. However, she is a sweet girl once you gain her trust.
* SuperMode: "Shirone Mode" in volume 16, in more ways than one.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: She has golden eyes and she is a Nekomata.
* SuperStrength: Contrasted strongly with her [[MusclesAreMeaningless build.]]
* SweetTooth: Least in the anime, she's fairly often seen nibbling on snacks. Mentioned when the Club is off to the faction meeting, and Koneko prepared a box of snacks while she and Gasper wait - Issei privately thinks they're all for her.
* TitleDrop: When trying to name the organization that will fight against Rizevim Lucifer's group, she names it the ''D×D''.
* TokenMiniMoe: She is the smallest character in the main cast, at least until she is joined in this position by Ravel, Gasper and Ophis.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Koneko is the Tomboy to Ravel's girly girl.
* UnprovokedPervertPayback: Played with. Early in the series, Koneko tends to step in to hit or insult Issei whenever he does something perverted. While her idea of what's perverted is reasonable, but she also tends to jump in when the subject of Issei's antics is unbothered, receptive, or even reciprocating. As she warms up to him and comes to terms with herself Koneo eventually explains to him that being a [[ACupAngst flat]] young lady competing for his attention with tall, buxom rivals gives her complicated feelings on the matter; she's aware that taking out problems with herself and other girls on him is unfair and isn't proud of her behaviour.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Ravel; their relationship is compared to a [[AnimalJingoism cat and a bird]], as pointed out by Azazel.
* WhenSheSmiles: Koneko is so cute [[ImTakingHerHomeWithMe that every home should have one]]. [[http://static2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130315022726/highschooldxd/images/f/f4/HighschoolDxD_09_019.jpg See for yourself]].
* WillfullyWeak: Her older sister Kuroka killed their master. Not wanting to become like her, Shirone sealed most of her powers until Issei convinces her otherwise.

!!Irina Shidou
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/irina_new_5025.jpg]]

->'''Role:''' Ace of Spades\
'''Species:''' Human / Reincarnated Angel\
'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MaayaUchida (Japanese), Creator/KristiKang (English)[[labelnote:Foreign [=VAs=]]]Creator/NicoleHannak (German)[[/labelnote]]

--> ''I'm not a self-proclaimed angel, I'm the real deal!''

Irina Shido is Issei's childhood friend and an exorcist of the Catholic Church like her father Toji. She returns to Japan to look for the Excalibur swords alongside Xenovia. At first, she doesn't like the idea that Issei is now a devil but comes to terms with it later. At some point after learning the truth about God, she leaves the Church and joins Michael as an angel under the designation of "Ace of Spades" and after Issei rescues Asia from Diodora, she joins the Occult Research Club.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Irina often calls Issei "Darling".
* {{Ambadassador}}: Even after becoming an Angel, she often helps the Occult Research Club establish diplomatic relationships. When negotiations in finding the Excalibur go south, she's not afraid to fight enemies that may attack, such as when Kokabiel attacks Kuoh Academy.
* AngelDevilShipping: Her relationship with Issei is an InUniverse, literal example of this.
* BabiesEverAfter: In the future, she has a son with Issei, named Shin.
* BadassCape: She wears a long cape just like Xenovia.
* BerserkButton: She used to laugh it off, but now she gets upset when someone puts "Self-Proclaimed" in front of any of her titles. Especially angel and childhood friend.
* BigDamnHeroes: Brings a projector that contains the Breast Dragon song [[ChekhovsGun Issei had to rehearse]] to snap him out of his Juggernaut Drive.
* BlackAndWhiteInsanity: For a while, her thought process was "church good; heretics, fallen angels, and demons bad." It was to the point where she happily referred to Asia as a heretic when they first met to [[ThisMeansWar Issei's understandable anger]], even ditching Xenovia when she joined Rias, despite Xenovia and Asia still being believers in God. Fortunately, she learned to perceive more grays eventually.
* BoyishShortHair: As a child, she had very short hair.
* ButIWouldReallyEnjoyIt: She would jump on Issei's groin in a second flat, but her status as an Angel would lead to her fall in case she outwardly expresses her carnal desires. Archangel Michael tried to circumvent this by creating a special room to let express her lust, [[MomentKiller but that only almost worked.]]
* CelibateHeroine: She tries to stick to this trope as explained above, due to the Church's teachings about sexuality as well as the risk of becoming a fallen angel if she lets her urges show. Once she's given a special room that removes this risk, she pursues Issei as aggressively as the other girls in his harem.
* ChekhovsGunman: During Rias' Rating Game against Riser, the latter's Knight Karlamine caught Kiba's attention when she recalls fighting a Holy Sword user, who were targeted for his revenge at the time. During the rematch in a short story, that Holy Sword user is revealed to be Irina, who assists Riser's team to fight Xenovia.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: She is in love with her childhood friend Issei.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Like Asia and Xenovia, she doesn't understand the aspects of reality.
* TheCoatsAreOff: Like Xenovia, she takes off her cape when she gets ready for battle.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: What does she say when she sees Issei groping both Xenovia and Asia in a shed in volume 6?
-->'''Irina:''' "G... Go do it on a bed! This is too dirty, and the hygiene is terrible in this place!"
* CoolSword:
** She uses an artificial version of Kiba's Holy-Demonic Sword as her preferred weapon.
** She later gets Hauteclere, the sword wielded by the friend of Durandal's original wielder.
* CovertPervert: The angel race's strict dogma of sexual repression has left her with a hidden but extremely voracious sexual appetite, probably surpassing even that of Akeno and Kuroka in Issei's harem. This side of hers is seen in full force in Volume 19, where she straight-up gloats to Issei that anything Rias will try with him in the bedroom, she'll go one step beyond that.
* EnemyMine: Despite being initially opposed to Devils and Fallen Angels as an exorcist, she and Xenovia still team up with the Occult Research Club to hunt down the Excalibur fragments.
* EnergyRingAttack: The anime gives Irina the ability to use halos of light to bind her enemies. In ''Shin'' Volume 4, she displays the ability to create rings of light which home in on the enemy.
* EtTuBrute: She didn't react well when her partner Xenovia left the Church and reincarnated into a Devil. Fortunately, they patch things up when she learns that Xenovia had no choice but to leave the Church after learning [[GodIsDead highly confidential information]].
* {{Fangirl}}: She and Issei used to be ''Franchise/SuperSentai'' fans to the point she would pose just to mimic her favorite heroes. She's pleased when her childhood friend gets to have a TV series of his own.
* FanserviceModel: [[spoiler:As of Volume 2 of ''Literature/ShinHighSchoolDXD'', she's featured on a Gremory-owned show as an underwear model alongside Asia and Xenovia.]]
* FirstKiss: She kissed ''Issei'' back when they were kids.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: In Volume 14, Issei comments on how he usually forgets that Irina really is his childhood friend, while Xenovia uses this as a chance to call Irina the self-proclaimed childhood friend. Later, despite her inner conflict between sleeping with him and refusing to become a fallen angel, she mentions that there is a way for her to sleep with him without her turning into one but on the condition that their thoughts must remain chaste, among a few other things, while Issei comments how impossible it would be for him to refrain from thinking lewdly while doing such a thing. Despite all of this Michael supports Irina's love for Issei, having gone so far as to create an alternate solution for her predicament in the form of a room that serves as a sort of pocket dimension where the angels' rules wouldn't be in effect allowing she and Issei to have sex in there to their heart's content without risk of her turning into a fallen angel.
* ForgottenFriendNewFoe: When they have first met again after many years, she was conflicted between killing or sparing Issei, since she's an exorcist and he's a devil (as well as an ''extreme'' pervert). After the PeaceConference, however, this is no longer an issue.
* GenkiGirl: Not as hyper as some examples, but it's especially evident in the anime, where she's extremely, well, [[ShapedLikeItself animated]]. If she's in the foreground of any shot, more often than not she's constantly moving.
* GirlishPigtails: Her hair is usually tied into twin tails.
* GoingCommando: Xenovia mentions that, when she comes into Issei's room she doesn't wear a bra. Irina tries to justify this by saying it's for [[BlatantLies health reasons]].
* HeroesPreferSwords: Like Xenovia, she uses swords as her weapons.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: She and Xenovia are [=BFFs=], even after the latter became a devil.
* IdiotHair: She has a prominent sickle-shaped hair sticking out of the top of her head.
* InTheHood: Her white cape features a hood like Xenovia's, until she ditches it after she becomes an angel.
* IShallTauntYou: She and Xenovia mock Asia for her exile back when they first met in volume 3.
* LightEmUp: Using her light powers, she can create and morph weapons, akin Excalibur Mimic.
* MagicKnight: She is a swordsman, who additionally uses [[LightEmUp light-based powers]]. She is also learning regular magic under Rossweisse.
* MaliciousMisnaming: It's a sore point for her if people keep referring to her as a "self-proclaimed angel".
* MarryThemAll: Proposes to Issei ''immediately'' after seeing Xenovia do it, which apparently sets some kind of Rating Game proposal record. He accepts.
* MasterSwordswoman: She's quite capable of using swords in battles.
* MorphWeapon: Her Excalibur Mimic, though she usually keeps it as a [[KatanasAreJustBetter katana]] for simplicity. She later teaches it to Xenovia.
* OneOfTheBoys: She used to be a troublemaker like Issei back when she was a kid. So much so [[OhCrap the latter was shocked]] when he discovers, many years later, [[UnsettlingGenderReveal that his "best friend" is a girl all along]].
* PatientChildhoodLoveInterest: While Irina has feelings for Issei ever since childhood, Irina was initially unable to pursue her feelings for Issei due to the fact that they were initially on opposite sides, and later due to her becoming an Brave Saint, which prevented her from induldging in physical intimacy, as Irina was forced to watch the other ORC girls such as Rias, Asia and Xenovia romantically pursue Issei. However, Irina was able to begin to engage in physical intimacy after getting a special room from Michael, as Issei reaffirmed that they are childhood friends and that he would always be at her side.
* PetTheDog: By the time she meets Asia and Xenovia again, she apologizes to them both for her actions towards them.
* PhraseCatcher: "Self-proclaimed [title used to describe her]". Usually, it shows up as "self-proclaimed angel".
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: As part of her school uniform.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: Issei is first shocked to discover that his best friend from childhood was not only a girl, but one who grew up to be very beautiful as well.
* SkewedPriorities: When she catches Xenovia and Asia getting intimate with Issei in a shed, Issei expects her to call the act dirty. She only ends up calling the shed dirty and tells them to GetARoom.
* SpontaneousWeaponCreation: She can use her light power to manifest a whip, inspired by her past use Excalibur Mimic.
* TokenReligiousTeammate: Another variant of this trope in that she's an angel compared to the still religious Xenovia and Asia being demons, but regardless is still a devout follower of God even after learning he's long dead.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Is actually in between the two characteristics. Compared to the other religious teammates, she's a girly girl to Xenovia with her more frilly and genki traits, but a tomboy to Asia due to her spunkiness. She used to be more of an overt tomboy as a child, sporting a TomboyishPonytail before she ditched them for girly twintails. Even Issei thought she was a boy as a kid.
* TomboyishPonytail: In the anime, she has her hair tied in a ponytail as a child.
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: Issei thought of her as a young boy given how she had very short hair and only realizes [[OhCrap to his shock]] that years later, Irina's actually a girl.
* UsedToBeATomboy: As a child she was such a strong case of OneOfTheBoys that Issei thought she ''was'' a boy, so meeting her again and seeing that SheIsAllGrownUp as a curvy, beautiful, and very feminine woman understandably causes a strong UnsettlingGenderReveal for Issei.
* ValleyGirl: The English dub gives her this sort of speaking pattern, emphasizing her ditzy thought processes.
* VowOfCelibacy: Due to being an Angel, she cannot become physically intimate, or else she will turn into a Fallen Angel. This dampens her attempt to escalate her relationship with Issei, much to her frustration. This is averted when she gets a room that allows her to have sex without turning into a Fallen Angel.
* {{Workaholic}}: Her job in heaven in the ''[[SpinOffspring EX]]'' future takes its toll on Irina coming home late at night to collapse on the nearest couch out of pure exhaustion, to the point that she looks to be a future victim of Karoshi[[note]] "Overwork Death"[[/note]].
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: A side story about when she first met Xenovia revealed that she was hesitant to seriously attack hostile humans, even if they were little more than mindless zombies after being fed upon by a Vampire. Xenovia's complete lack of hesitation to cut them down initially appalled her.

-> (after losing it) ''All of you should be killed. I'll even devour your souls.''

->'''Role:''' Bishop\
'''Species:''' Dhampyr / Reincarnated Devil\
'''Voiced by''': Creator/AyaneSakura (Japanese), Creator/AlisonViktorin (English)[[labelnote:Foreign [=VAs=]]]Creator/SarahAlles (German)[[/labelnote]]

Gasper Vladi is Rias' first Bishop and an extremely effeminate {{dhampyr}} who doesn't want to suck blood. Banished from his family as a child because of his powers, he is eventually transformed into a devil by Rias. He soon joins the Occult Research Club as a shut-in due to Rias trying to control his powers.

----
* AttractiveBentGender: He's a case of DudeLooksLikeALady who is also a WholesomeCrossdresser, the combination of which results in many guys and some girls viewing him like a cute and pretty girl, even after learning he's a dude, and the story sees fit to treat him like a girl by giving him plenty of MaleGaze scenes.
* BadassAdorable: He's cute but he can still kick ass when he needs to.
* BadassTeacher: His number-one apprentice is Ernestine Galnstein, Issei's daughter with Elmenhilde.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He looks like he wouldn't harm a fly until he loses it against Georg. He was kept in the dark about Issei's (temporary) death because it would be too traumatic. Then Georg just had the gall to taunt him about how senseless Issei's sacrifice to save Ophis was. Cue Gaspar losing it in a grisly scene seemingly ripped straight out of ''Manga/{{Hellsing}}''.
* TheBusCameBack: He was PutOnABus after volume 6, but he returns four volumes later after Issei and his friends return from Kyoto.
* ChekhovsGunman: Rias had stated back in Volume 1 that she had already used a Bishop piece when she revived Asia. He makes his first appearance in the middle of Volume 4.
* CowardlyLion: Normally, he'd be afraid to do almost anything without Issei's help. Until he decides to take a beating for Xenovia, and later when he flips against Georg.
* CurbStompBattle: Happens anytime he uses his Sacred Gear powers. And when he uses ''his true powers'', Kiba outright narrated that his fight against Georg wasn't a fight at all.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Gasper's is probably the only one who can beat Akeno's past. How? His birth was very much troubled, having a fragment of Balor from the beginning by the time his mother delivered him, and she died because of the shock of giving birth of such an EldritchAbomination. Then he and Valerie were exiled from the vampire society because of their powers and being considered as "different being", while the human society did so because they were still considered as vampires. Later, they are targeted by the upper echelons because of their powers and has to constantly live under tight surveillance until Valerie was able to cover his escape.
* DaywalkingVampire: Thanks to being half-human, Gasper can walk under the sunlight with no ill effects.
* {{Dhampyr}}: The child of a vampire nobleman and a human woman. He only occasionally needs blood (full-blooded vampires can't consume anything else) and can ([[{{Hikikomori}} but initially refuses to]]) go out in the sunlight as he pleases.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Not only does he like wearing girls' clothes, he naturally has a very effeminate body and face structure, so even when he wears male clothes people still often end up thinking he looks incredibly girly.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Like Xenovia, he also made a brief appearance in the Season 1 anime's post-credits during the announcement for Season 2.
* EffeminateVoice: The anime has Creator/AyaneSakura give the WholesomeCrossdresser Gasper an incredibly cutesy voice that betrays his true gender. Even in the novels, Issei found his voice shrill and girly when he first heard it.
* EldritchAbomination: When he becomes truly enraged and enters his true form, his surroundings plunge into the darkness he transforms into a living mass of darkness with [[ExtraEyes several]] [[RedEyesTakeWarning red eyes]] who can summon several deformed creatures which messily devour his opponents. It's later revealed that all this is the result of Balor, an evil god with a piece of his consciousness sealed within Gasper's Sacred Gear. He was born in a state like this, which understandably [[OhCrap scared his human mother to death]] and cursed the surrounding hospital staff to die as well. His transformation gives enemies and allies alike a MassOhCrap reaction, but Balor, fortunately, treasures the Club as much as Gasper. ''EX'' reveals that [[spoiler: he can contain the transformation and the darkness forms into a living shadow appearing from his body ala [[Manga/{{Naruto}} Shikamaru]], subverting this.]]
* EquippableAlly: [[spoiler: In Volume 24 he becomes one for Rias called "Forbidden Invade Balor the Princess" which lets her use the same abilities as his Sacred Gear. It was inspired by Sairaorg and Regulus using Balance Breaker together.]]
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: He somehow was able to collect fanboys despite them knowing that he's male.
* TheExile: He and Valerie were exiled by both the vampire ''and'' human societies.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: He's shy yet good-natured {{Dhampyr}} who wants to drink as little blood as possible.
* FutureBadass: In the future, he's revealed to have evolved Forbidden Balor View into complete TimeMaster powers, making himself a Super Devil, and has a different personality that scares Ex.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When he drinks Issei's dragon blood, his full power manifests.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He's one of the nicest people in the Occult Research Club, rivaling Issei and Rias in his friendliness, and he has bright blonde hair.
* HalfBreedDiscrimination: Born of a vampire nobleman and a human woman, Gasper is viewed as an outsider by both vampires and humans alike for being inferior to full-blooded vampires as well as his terrifying powers.
* HeartbrokenBadass: When he finds out that Issei died, and when he finds out that Valerie Tepes, his best friend, is in a coma after overusing the Holy Grail.
* HellishPupils: Being a {{Dhampyr}}, Gasper's eyes are slitted at times and plays this straight when he snaps and transforms after Georg taunts of Issei's (temporary) death.
* HeroicBuild: [[spoiler:In the future. You wouldn't believe that he was once an effeminate crossdresser.]]
* {{Hikikomori}}: Of the agoraphobic variety, to the point that unless inspired by Issei, he will jump into a cardboard box he brings with him at the drop of a hat. Sometimes before the hat drops as well. Issei remedies this by giving him a paper bag with eye holes to help him with this, only for him to quip that Gasper looks like a pervert.
* MagicalEye: His Sacred Gear stops time for whatever he focuses his sight on.
* MaleGaze: Hia [[DudeLooksLikeALady feminine looks]] are frequently capitalized on by the story through him getting plenty of scenes dedicated to showing off his curves, being treated like an InnocentFanserviceGirl comparable to Asia, despite being completely male. It's to the point that he's the only guy who gets fanservice intermission cards in the anime.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Gasper is the Feminine Boy to Koneko's Masculine Girl. Koneko is the PintSizedPowerhouse while Gasper is the WholesomeCrossdresser.
* MeaningfulRename: [[spoiler: In Volume 25 his Scared Gear gets renamed from "Forbidden Balor View" (The Evil Eye that Stops the World) to "Aeon Balor" (The Evil-Eyed King Who Dominate the Space and Time) when it becomes a proper Longinus.]]
* MentorArchetype: In ''EX'', he teaches Ernestine Galnstein how to fight.
* NiceGuy: One of the nicest members of the main group.
* NoSocialSkills: Thinks cross-dressing is perfectly acceptable.
* PointyEars: His ears are long and pointy because of his vampire parentage.
* ProneToTears: He's timid and sensitive, so it takes almost nothing to make him cry. One of the reasons Issei just can't stop going StupidSexyFlanders over him.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Being a {{Dhampyr}}, Gasper has red eyes. He's usually nice and harmless, [[BewareTheNiceOnes unless someone manages to make him angry.]]
* SealedInAPersonShapedCan: It's revealed that Gasper's version of Forbidden Balor View contains an actual fragment of the Irish evil god Balor from which the Sacred Gear takes its name.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Gasper is the Sensitive Guy to Issei Manly Man.
* ShowerShy: He's very uncomfortable bathing with Issei and Kiba and even when Issei forces him to bath with them, Gasper keeps his ModestyTowel on. Issei calls him out on how unmanly he's acting, especially since Gasper wears the towel like a girl.
* ShrinkingViolet: At the beginning of the story, he's terrified of being around too many people. He gets better over time.
* StopDrowningAndStandUp: A brief gag in Volume 19 has him freaking out over being a vampire in water until Issei reminds him that he's only half-vampire and a reincarnated devil. Gasper replies "Ah, that's right" before standing up in the shallow pool.
* StoryBreakerPower: His ability is to stop time, lampshaded by Issei as "close to breaking the rules". On top of that, it becomes '''massively''' more powerful if he drinks even a drop of human blood. Luckily, for dramatic tension, he's UnskilledButStrong (and even feared it for a long time).
* StupidSexyFlanders: Miyama-Zero and Ichiei Ishibumi sometimes give him the MaleGaze as if he were actually female instead of ludicrously effeminate. Issei can't seem to think of him as a guy, seeing as he covers himself in a towel from the chest.
-->'''Issei:''' "What a cruel reality!"
* SuperpowerLottery: There's a ''reason'' why his Bishop piece is mutated. And that's not counting what he can do ''without Forbidden Balor View''. And it goes beyond that. [[spoiler:It turns out that his Sacred Gear is an ''actual'' fragment of Balor itself, making it a ''Longinus'' level.]]
* TakingTheBullet: In Volume 10, when Xenovia's ability was sealed during the Gremory-Bael Ratings Game, he used his body as a shield to protect her.
* TimeMaster: His future self-evolved Forbidden Balor View to be capable of using Balance-Breaker, which allows him to freeze time, travel hrough it, and send others through time. The [[NoSell exceptions]] are anyone of equal or greater strength to him.
* TimeStandsStill: His Sacred Gear, Forbidden Balor View, can temporarily freeze anything he looks at.
* TinySchoolboy: While he stands at 150 cm/4'11[=''=] tall, most of the girls in the Occult Research Club save for Koneko are much taller than him.
* TokenHeroicOrc: Once the Club gains insight into Vampire society in Volume 14, they quickly come to realize how loathsomely arrogant the majority of the race is, and are baffled how someone as sweet and shy as Gasper could share their blood. For quite some time, the only other pleasant vampire was Gasper's childhood friend Valerie, who is also half-human.
* TookALevelInBadass: His decision after rescuing Valerie is to get stronger and later begins his training regime. He shows the results in ''EX''.
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: It's a minor RunningGag that any time a male character sees him for the first time, they'll mistake him for a cute girl, and when his true gender is stated, they'll state some variant of "Why is the world so cruel?" out of despair at him being a guy.
* UnskilledButStrong: Usually, the ability to stop time would be insanely broken (especially if the user has a Mutated Piece, which denotes incalculable potential). That said, hatred and fear of his power caused him to not train it for a long time.
* VampiresHateGarlic: As a {{Dhampyr}}, he has some vampire weaknesses, garlic being one of them.
* VegetarianVampire: Gasper doesn't eat meat products, and he rarely drinks blood.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Nice, cute, feminine and wears the Kuoh Academy girls' school uniform despite being a boy.

Le Fay Pendragon is a powerful sorceress and the sister of Arthur Pendragon.
----
* AscendedFangirl: After Vali's team is pardoned for their crimes, she becomes Issei's contracted magician. And eventual Wife.
* ApologizesALot: In part due to Kuroka always making a mess out of Issei's home when they moved in Volume 14.
* BabiesEverAfter: In the future, she has a son with Issei, named Mordred, who despite having the ability to wield Collbrande, decided to be a wizard. Part of the reason the ten other children travel to the past is to avoid him being retconned out of existence.
* CuteWitch: One of the nicer members of the Vali team.
* {{Fangirl}}: Of Issei when she asks for a handshake from him, revealing that she's a huge fan of his "Oppai Dragon" Show. Which she did [[CasualDangerDialogue in the middle of battle, mind.]]
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She has blonde hair and is a girl with an affable disposition.
* IronicName: So far, despite being named after the infamous Morgan Le Fay who, in myth, betrayed Arthur Pendragon, she hasn't backstabbed her brother yet nor seems to have any inclination to do so.
%%* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The light to Kuroka's dark.
* NiceGirl: She's the nicest girl you would ever want to meet.
* PrettyFreeloader: Averted. She does help with the housework and does Kuroka's laundry.
* PimpedOutCape: Her cape has a fur collar and pink flower patterns.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Starts wearing one from Volume 9 onwards.
* SiblingTeam: She fights alongside her brother Arthur.
* SirNotAppearingInThisTrailer: Le Fay barely appears in the teasers for ''Hero'' -- and for good reason, as she appears towards the end of the first half of the series to help Issei deal with Cao Cao.
* SupremeChef: If she's not around, the Vali Team defaults to cup noodles.

She would later enroll at Kuoh Academy as a 1st Year student in the Middle School Division, and become a member of the Occult Research Club.
----
* AntiquatedLinguistics: She communicates in old-fashioned Japanese speech, highlighting her otherworldliness.
* AsianFoxSpirit: Like her mother Yasaka, Kunou is a kitsune, and possesses the ability to shapeshift. Due to her age, however, her true form is about as big as a kitten.
* BadassAndChildDuo: She's the child to Issei's badass.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Her gold eyes match her blonde hair.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Besides fox tails and ears, she's a cute little girl.
* EasilyForgiven: After attacking Issei and his friends by mistake when they first enter Kyoto, she apologizes to them. Luckily, they forgive her shortly afterward and help her rescue Yasaka.

--> ''Do you think a world without God is wrong? Do you think a world without God would decay? I am sorry to say but that isn’t the case. Me and you as well are both healthily living like this. The world moves even without a God.''

Azazel is the former Governor-General of the Fallen Angels. First appearing as Issei's contractor, Azazel joins the club as an advisor at Sona and Sirzechs's suggestion. Towards the climax of the fourth arc, he and the other faction heads are forced to seal themselves away so they may do battle with Trihexa. Although he is still capable of contacting the others thanks to Beelzebub, his loss is mourned by the Occult Research Club, especially Issei.
----
* TheAce: He's a MadScientist that reached several breakthroughs with Sacred Gears and created an artificial Sacred Gear. He's also an exceptional badass and [[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking leader of the fallen angels]]. To top it off, he's an [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys extremely successful ladies man]]. Needless to say, he could be called perfect in every way.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: How he's described by Issei.
* {{Ambadassador}}: He's sent to negotiate with the Three Factions for peace towards the end of volume 4. He luckily had his Sacred Gear with him when Katarea launches a full-scale assault on them. Then, in volume 9, he and Serafall start diplomatic relations between the youkai and the devils.
* AnArmAndALeg: He wins his duel against Katerea by using his light spear to chop off his left arm, which stuns Katerea long enough for Azazel to fatally impale her. He later replaces it with a new cybernetic arm.
* ArtificialLimbs: Since losing his left arm to Katarea at the end of volume 4, Azazel wears a robotic arm made to look like his actual one.
* TheAtoner: Part of his reason for pushing for the peace conference is the fact that he still blames himself for the [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom unintended consequences]] of his past orders, such as inadvertently causing friction between Baraqiel and Akeno when her mother Shuri was killed by her own family. When father and daughter reconcile, he silently thanks Issei for helping him lift that burden.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: He's the Occult Research Club's advisor and one of the most powerful Fallen Angels alive.
* BadassBoast: Azazel delivers one to Vali after killing Katerea.
-->'''Azazel:''' "Now then, Vali. What will you do? Shall I go at it again? Even if I have no armor and only one-handed, I can fight with you adequately."
* BadassPacifist: The Club initially has a hard time believing that he's actually quite harmless given how much Fallen Angels antagonized them in the first few novels. During the Great War, the Fallen Angels led by Azazel were the first to cut their losses and pull out, and he makes every effort to ensure that war never breaks out again with the other factions, much to the frustration of Kokabiel and Vali.
* BadassTeacher: He's the advisor of the Occult Research Club and teaches his fellow members from time to time.
* BadassTransplant: Azazel replaces his missing arm he cut himself into a robotic arm that he's always wanted to try out.
* BerserkButton: Anyone bringing up one of his previous inventions, the [[OverlyLongName Blazer Shining Aura Darkness Blade]], is bound to set him off.
* BigGood: Even though Rias is the club's president, Azazel's millennia worth of expertise in training, Sacred Gears, and other mythologies mean that the club often takes orders from him.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Like you would never believe.
* TheCasanova: To put it simply, he has a harem. A ''thousand'' of them in fact. No, that's not the number of chicks he made out with. He has ''a thousand harems'' -- and he's made out with ''every single one of them''.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: When Azazel was first revealed as the Fallen Angels' Governor-General, he was depicted with an almost sinister undertone, and was established to be [[TheManBehindTheMan the one who hired Raynare to murder Issei]]. Later on, however, Azazel is shown to be an absolute fanatic when it comes to Sacred Gears, a goofball that his assistant Shemhazai has to threaten into doing work, and a rather kind individual. Even his involvement in Issei's death comes across as odd in hindsight as Issei's {{Foil}}, Vali, is not only a half-devil but his surrogate son, making it seem odd he didn't just approach Issei and ask to study his Sacred Gear and possibly recruit him.
* CombatCommentator: For the Ratings Game match between Team Gremory and Team Bael.
* CoolCar: He also has an ''anti-Dragon missile and a KillSat''.
%%* CoolTeacher
* CreateYourOwnHero: By having Raynare kill Issei, Azazel would be indirectly responsible for Issei's transformation into a devil and a respected hero of the Underworld.
* CurbStompBattle: He easily overpowers and kills Katerea during the PeaceConference in volume 4, even after she had consumed Ophis' snake.
* DealWithTheDevil: He makes a one-time pact with Typhon.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: He can drive normally, but he's willing to fire off a rocket-booster on his sports car ''in narrow roads''.
* EasilyForgiven: It's pointed out that Raynare was Azazel's subordinate and her actions are his responsibility. He admits that's true, but Katarea and the Khaos Brigade [[AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs launch an assault on Kuoh Academy]] before the meeting can go any further and at that point [[JustifiedTrope what he'd bring to the alliance is so valuable the big shots give him a free pass]].
* FirstPersonSmartass: Whenever the narration goes to him, he's pretty snarky.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: The Occult Research Club initially despised him, since he was the head of the Fallen Angels who antagonized them early in the series and then suddenly introduced as their advisor on Sirzechs's request. Akeno was the most hostile because Azazel inadvertently caused her strained relationship with Baraqiel while Issei warms up to him fairly quickly with their shared perversions (though he's still often unwillingly subjected to Azazel's zany experiments).
* TheGadfly: Azazel loves trolling Issei for the hell of it.
* GeniusBruiser: He can kick ass and he can also ''study'' how to kick ass.
* HandicappedBadass: Even after replacing his left arm with a robotic one, Azazel's strong enough to stand up to the world's most powerful villainous factions.
* HeroicSacrifice: A non-fatal example, but by the end of volume 21, he seals himself to help suppress Trihexa.
* IncomingHam
-->"It's! ''HERE''!" ''(After remembering Issei and Tannin's conversation after the latter accidentally summoned the breast fairy)''
* IronicEcho: He warned Issei and the rest of the group not to make enemies of Hades. In volume 12, he, Sirzechs, and Dulio confront Hades to make a complaint.
* IShallTauntYou: He has no problems taunting his enemies to provoke them into fighting him.
* LargeHam: When he has Rias "[[ItMakesSenseInContext in hostage]]".
* LaserGuidedKarma: He finally gets his comeuppance after getting away with making Issei a ButtMonkey, oh so many times, by the group. HilarityEnsues.
* LawOfInverseFertility: He's been hit by this, hard. In volume 21, it is revealed that though he's "enjoyed" a ''thousand harems'' during his life, he does not have a single blood descendant.
* LifeOrLimbDecision: He chops off his arm to free himself from Katerea. He's quite casual about it compared to most examples of the trope and gets a replacement later.
* LikeADaughterToMe: Although Akeno's initially hostile to Azazel, he admits that he views her as a daughter, given his close friend Baraqiel ''is'' her father.
* MadScientist:
** He's devoted to studying Sacred Gears, admitting that it's the only thing he respects his former God for after making him fall, and attempts to replicate the process with several artificial Sacred Gears. He got excited after seeing the Nemean Lion Regulus and ''demands'' to Sairaorg to bring that to his lab for studying.
** The basis for replacing his arm with a cybernetic prosthesis, rather than, say, using his Sacred Gear research to heal it, is because he always wanted a robot hand.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: He hacks off his arm using his light attack that supposedly is dangerous for him. He ''just brushes it off'' like it's nothing before he impales Katerea with his spear.
* TheManBehindTheWoman: Raynare would never have murdered Issei if Azazel didn't let her.
* MentorArchetype: He becomes the advisor of the Occult Research Club at the end of volume 4.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: He seals himself to duel with Trihexa.
* MistakenForTerrorist: He's accused of hypocrisy due to being a "terrorist" while suing for peace. Needless to say, he's not amused.
* MrExposition: Having lived ''much'' longer than the rest of the Club combined, he's usually the one to explain how things work outside of the Underworld.
* NotSoStoic: After seeing Rizevim, he ''destroys a wall'' to show how understandably frustrated he is at seeing him.
* ParentalSubstitute: He's served as one to Vali for as long as they've been training together. However, it's Odin who officially adopts Vali because a former terrorist would publicly look better off under the care of a god than a fallen angel recorded as a villain in the Bible.
* PoweredArmor: He uses it infused with Fafnir's spirit. Unlike other Sacred Gears, his is only artificial.
* PreMortemOneLiner: After hacking off his left arm, he says "I'll give you an arm at least" before killing Katerea for good.
* ReallyGetsAround: Over his life, he's "enjoyed" ''one thousand harems.'' Not one thousand women, one thousand ''harems'' of women. To technically meet the definition, that's 3000 women, minimum.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Azazel has a reasonable disposition. Given that, he's willing to form a peace treaty between the Three Factions and advise the Occult Research Club on their missions.
* RedemptionQuest: This is his motivation for initiating the peace talks and joining the Occult Research Club. He clearly regretted his involvement in Akeno's life.
* RetiredBadass: Retires from his position as governor of the fallen angels, then joins the Occult Research Club.
* SayMyName: When Indra reveals that he knows Cao Cao as a kid, he could only utter out "Indra!"
* SpannerInTheWorks: He's the one who negotiated with the Three Factions to form TheAlliance in volume 4. It leads to them discovering and fighting the Khaos Brigade.
* SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome: It is hinted that he dies in the future and Kurenai continues his research. So, more like "Sudden Spin-off Death Syndrome." When Volume 21 was released, many readers would have guessed that he would sacrifice himself. They were right.
* StaringDownCthulhu: He confronts Indra -- a god.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Of all the Fallen Angels shown in the series, he's one of the very few good ones.
* TooKinkyToTorture: After participating in one of Akeno's S&M plays.
* TragicMistake: After sending Baraqiel out on a mission, which involved leaving Akeno and Shuri behind, the Himejimas decided to kill Akeno for her Fallen Angel blood. [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone He deeply regretted this mistake]].
* TricksterMentor: To everybody, but more on Issei and Vali than everyone else.
* {{Tritagonist}}: If both Issei and Kiba aren't available or if the scene is a very serious matter, then it's usually through his point of view.
* WhatWouldXDo: When he has a run-in with Lilith, Ophis' clone he asks himself what [[FluffyTamer Asia]] would do. He ends up offering her a chocolate bar.
