Amanto (天人, "sky people") is a term collectively used for the various alien species and factions that came to Earth and took over. Some of these Amanto look [[HumanAliens almost completely human]], while others look like [[BeastMan humanoid animals]]. The [[Characters/GintamaHarusame Harusame Space Pirates]] also consist entirely of Amanto.

!!Admiral Shijaku
!!!Voiced by: Creator/KenjiroTsuda, Shinya Hamazoe (Young)
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shijaku_anime_2_6.jpg]]

Admiral Shijaku is one of the founders of the Altana Liberation Army, an alliance of various planets dedicated to taking down the Tendoshu's control of their planets' Altanas.
----
* BadassCape: He wears a long purple cape, even into battle.
* TheComicallySerious: Shijaku is a serious person, but is heavily involved in comedic scenes. Such as assuming that Nobunobu struggling not to shit his pants will lead to the launch of a powerful secret weapon, so he joins him in shitting his pants to cancel it out.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: [[spoiler:Compared to his incompetent and stupid brother Prince Hata, Shijaku (AKA Prince Barkas) is responsible and competent.]]
* FourStarBadass: An admiral who is quite capable of throwing it down with the best of them in a fight.
* FreudWasRight: Despite having the qualities of a true leader, the reason he was denied the throne was because of [[spoiler:the small size of the antennae on his forehead, called "Chidanneksko" and shortened to "Chinko", the Japanese word for ''penis''. He wears the headband on his forehead to hide the "Chinko".]]
* FriendlyEnemy: Regarded Enshou as his archenemy in the past, but during a battle he still chatted with him like a friend through video.
* FrontlineGeneral: Shijaku takes personal part in both space battles as an admiral and ground battles as a warrior.
* HeelFaceTurn: While the Altana Liberation Army attempts to invade and take over Earth in search of the Tendoshu, Shijaku tries to make peace with the Earthlings and joins Sakamoto in storming the mothership after Enshou resumes the invasion.
* LongLostRelative: [[spoiler:Shijaku's real name is Barkas, and he is ''actually'' Prince Hata's older brother. He goes under "Shijaku" as he was exiled from his country after Hata took control of it.]]
* PointyEars: One of the few visible indicators he's not human are his pointy ears.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Shijaku was a renowned warrior even as a prince and retains his fighting skills as an admiral.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Unlike the rest of the Liberation Army, Shijaku is a moderate willing to see reason and make peace when possible.
* RightfulKingReturns: [[spoiler:When he hears Katsura and his men are on his brother Prince Hata's ship, Shijaku announces himself through a microphone, telling the people on board that he is making his return to rule beside his brother. With Shijaku as the capable ruler and Hata as the one with the big Chinko, together they make the true king of Oukoku.]]
* RubberForeheadAliens: Shijaku looks almost completely human apart from his pointy ears but he's also [[spoiler:got a small antennae on his forehead, hidden by the circlet he wears.]]
* WarriorPrince: While he has long since left his kingdom behind, he is both a prince and a capable warrior.

[[folder:Enshou]]
!!Prince Enshou
!!!Voiced by: Creator/YuichiroUmehara (Silver Soul Part 1), Creator/TomoakiMaeno ([[TheOtherDarrin Silver Soul Part 2]])
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enshou_anime.jpg]]

Enshou is the prince of Burei, a planet previously engaged in war with Shijaku. Following the Altana incident, he joins the Altana Liberation Army and becomes one of its hardline leaders.
----
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Loses his left arm thanks to one of Katsura's bombs and then gets his right arm cut off by Takasugi when they clash, finally causing his defeat.]]
* ArmedLegs: Has a laser pistol armed in his right boot.
* BadassBoast: When Enshou joins the fight himself, he boasts of his strength as a warrior and backs it up with his deadly skill with his beam sabers.
-->'''Enshou:''' Even if the Liberation Army is annihilated, this war will not end. As long as I exist, you will not be spared destruction. The Gunsmoke Prince is one soldier that wields the might of 10,000 soldiers. Getting rid of you will be no trouble at all.
* BadassCape: Wears a long blue cape and has no issue fighting while wearing it.
* BetrayalByInaction: [[spoiler:He does this to his own older brother who was setup in a trap in form of a treaty, just so he can marry the woman he was also in love with.]]
* BoomHeadshot: [[spoiler:After being defeated by Takasugi, he is shot through the head and killed by one of his own soldiers.]]
* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler:He was this to his older brother who actually is a good person who actually praises Enshou for being a hero and happens to be dating the same woman he would marry. He let him get killed in a trap that was set up as a treaty over said feelings for the woman.]]
* ColonyDrop: His final desperate attempt to destroy the Earth after Hinokagutsuchi's cannon is disabled by Takasugi is to order the entire mothership dropped on the planet.
* DoubleWeapon: Enshou's beam sabers can be joined together at the bottom of the hilt to form a double-bladed weapon, allowing him to more easily spin it around to deflect enemy gunfire.
* DualWielding: Wields twin beam sabers, using them to great effect by taking on several enemies at once.
* EarthShatteringKaboom: With the Altana Liberation Army unable to use their superior technology on Earth, Enshou unveils the weapon Hinokagutsuchi capable of destroying planets. He then threatens Gengai to bring back their technology or the Earth will be destroyed in six hours.
* FourStarBadass: The commander of Burei's armies is a capable warrior who is not afraid of personally taking part in battles.
* FrontlineGeneral: While he commands the battle against the defenders of Edo from space, flashbacks show him to be perfectly willing to lead Burei's armies both on the ground and on his flagship.
* FriendlyEnemy: Is seen chatting with his enemy Shijaku through video in a friendly manner in the past.
* HappilyMarried: While his devotion to warfare keeps him separated from her, he loves his wife and she seems to feel the same about him. Unfortunately she is killed along with their newborn child when [[spoiler:the Altana on their planet blows up.]] It turns out it was complicated on Enshou's part, [[spoiler:with him fighting battle after battle just to be ''away'' from his wife for not saving his brother who was his wife's first love when he needed it.]]
* HeelFaceDoorSlam: [[spoiler:After being defeated, he seems to be on the verge of ending the war and trying to seek peace, only to get killed by one of his own angry soldiers.]]
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: He is devoted to destroying the Tendoshu to avenge his family, but his obsession with revenge leads him to try to exterminate the people of Earth for daring to resist them. Part of the reason is also that now that [[spoiler:the Tendoshu are already as good as dead, he has no real target to sate his desire for revenge on.]]
* HumanAlien: Enshou is an Amanto from Burei, but looks completely human with no physical differences.
* {{Hypocrite}}: The same person wanting to avenge his wife and family [[spoiler:let his own brother die in a trap just so he can marry the same woman he was also in love with. Even he admits he had no right to resent his brother over it.]]
* ImplacableMan: He and his resolve to destroy Earth won't go down easily.
* LaserBlade: He wields two powerful beam sabers which can expand to attack at range, but can also be used to launch several smaller blasts of energy at his enemies. The two beam sabers can also be joined together at the hilt to form a double-bladed weapon.
* KnightTemplar: He declares the cause of the Altana Liberation Army to be a holy war to liberate the galaxy of the Tendoshu and that those who might resist their efforts should be exterminated.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: His newborn child is killed along with his wife when [[spoiler:the Altana on his planet was blown up by Utsuro.]]
* ParryingBullets: Enshou's beam sabers are capable of deflecting enemy gunfire.
* PocketProtector: [[spoiler:While it's not hidden, Sakamoto shoots him straight in the locket he carries around his neck, which takes most of the impact, after which he reveals himself to be alive and starts fighting back.]]
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Burei is described as a great military nation and Enshou himself is proud of their warrior ways.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Prince of the military nation of Burei and a much stronger warrior than any of the soldiers fighting for him.
* RedBaron: He is known as the Gun Smoke Prince.
* RevengeBeforeReason: He is devoted to getting revenge against the Tendoshu for deaths of his wife and child. When he discovers that [[spoiler:the Tendoshu has essentially been killed off]], he still resumes the Liberation Army's efforts, feeling that he and the soldiers can't go back empty-handed without obtaining some form of revenge. [[spoiler:It turns out even he realized that his revenge is misguided because all he did was ran away from his wife to fight battle after battle because he let her first love, his ''older brother'', die by not providing backup.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: As the prince of Burei, Enshou actively engages in military matters and even participates in battles himself.
* SentryGun: The Altana Liberation Army's mothership Amenotori is equipped with turrets on the inside, which Enshou uses to kill the soldiers who turn on him and to attack Sakamoto's group while they try to take the ship.
* SpinToDeflectStuff: While temporarily joining his two beam sabers together, he spins it around to deflect the enemy gunfire.
* TragicKeepsake: He keeps a picture of his now-dead wife in his locket.
* UnwittingPawn: Enshou is the perfect pawn in Utsuro's plans. He plays right into his hands by resuming the invasion of Earth, eventually leading to him preparing the Hinokagutsuchi to destroy the Earth, which is exactly what Utsuro wants. Enshou doesn't realise he's been played until Utsuro unleashes the Altana on Earth to meet the Hinokagutsuchi's blast, which will cause untold destruction on the rest of the galaxy. And even after realising that, he doubles down on his efforts by trying to force the Hinokagutsuchi to fire early.
* WarHawk: Enshou takes over the Liberation Army's operation on Earth to continue waging war against them, seeing that after [[spoiler:the Tendoshu were discovered to have become a bunch of living corpses]], they cannot afford to go back empty-handed.
* WarriorPrince: Enshou is the prince of Burei and is devoted to the ways of war, whether it be leading fleets of spaceships or personally fighting on the ground.
* WeaponOfMassDestruction: The Altana Liberation Army's mothership Amenotori contains a powerful weapon known as Hinokagutsuchi, capable of destroying planets.
* WeHaveReserves: He doesn't care if the soldiers on the ground are killed in the destruction of Earth, as he claims that it's the only way for their sacrifice to not be in vain. This actually causes some of his soldiers to point their guns at him to try and stop him, only for them to be shot by the Amenotori's sentry turrets. He also sacrifices several soldiers by destroying parts of the mothership to make the Hinokagutsuchi fire early.

Leader of the Dakini forces hired by the Altana Liberation Army.
----
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Hedoro punches him so hard that he is sent flying into a building while losing his right arm, which was still holding on to his weapon.]]
* BadassBoast: Boasts of the strength of both himself and his Dakini warriors.
-->'''Ougai:''' We are the Dakini! The warriors feared as the 'Demolishing Tanks'!
* BadassCape: Wears a long flowing cape draped over his left arm.
* BloodKnight: Ougai lives for the glory of the battlefield and is excited when the Altana Liberation Army's machines are disabled, declaring that they can go back to the good old days of war, before having the best technology determined who would win.
* CarryABigStick: Fitting the oni motifs of the Dakini, Ougai carries a huge club dotted with iron knobs, similar to the Japanese [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanab%C5%8D kanabo.]]
* CatchAndReturn: The defenders of Kabukicho throw huge boulders at him and his forces, only for him and the Dakini to simply catch them and throw them back.
* EliteMooks: His Dakini warriors are all very strong and prove a formidable challenge even to named characters.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a long scar running down his dead left eye, which combined with his demonic appearance doesn't make him look particularly heroic.
* GrievousHarmWithABody: After breaking Tojo's sword with his teeth, he grabs his foot and slams him into his fellow Yagyu retainers Minamito and Kitaooji.
* HeManWomanHater: He claims to hate women and is very insulted when he smells a female scent while fighting Kyubei. Since he views the battlefield as a sacred ceremony where men bet their lives and their pride, he sees the presence of women as disgracing it.
* HornedHumanoid: Like all Dakini, Ougai has horns on his head. Unlike most of the Dakini he has three of them, with one horn poking out of his forehead and the left horn broken off in a previous battle. The middle horn is eventually broken off when Gintoki bashes one of Tsukuyo's kunai through it and into his forehead. [[spoiler:The left horn is later revealed to have been broken off by Hedoro when he left the Dakini. He finally loses his right horn when Hedoro punches him into a far-away building.]]
* TheJuggernaut: Referring to the Dakini as the 'Demolishing Tanks' is no idle boast, as Ougai and his warriors smash their way through Kabukicho's defenses to get to the cannon that disabled their technology. He smashes open Kabukicho's gate in one blow and throws back the boulders they launched with catapults with his own hands. Even lowering parts of the street fail to stop their advance, as the Dakini simply break apart the surroundings to create makeshift bridges. [[spoiler:It takes an even ''bigger'' juggernaut known as Hedoro to finally put him down.]]
* MadeOfIron: Ougai has toughness to match his strength. He takes several hits from Kyubei and the Yorozuya, crashes from a tall building when the stairs fall apart, survives getting buried under dozens of wooden logs, breaks apart the log that Gintoki tries to smash down on his head with just a headbutt, and finally survives a huge barrage of kunai from Tsukuyo and the Hyakka. When Gintoki finally seems to have ended the fight by bashing a kunai through one of his horns and into his forehead, he gets back up shortly after with the kunai broken.
* NowThatsUsingYourTeeth: Catches Tojo's sword between his teeth and then breaks the blade when he bites down on it.
* OffhandBackhand: When Minamito tries to attack him from behind after having initially charged from the front, Ougai simply throws a punch behind him without looking and brutally breaks Minamito's right arm.
* OldSoldier: An old mercenary and veteran of many campaigns.
* OneHandedZweihander: Owing to his SuperStrength, Ougai swings his enormous club effortlessly with one hand.
* OneManArmy: He's significantly stronger than a standard Dakini warrior and can take down multiple soldiers at once with a swing of his weapon.
* {{Oni}}: Ougai is one of the strongest of the Dakini, a race of huge ogre-like warriors with horns and monstrous strength similar to and often compared with the Oni of Japanese mythology. Ougai even carries a large studded club similar to those used by the Oni.
* RousingSpeech: When the Altana Liberation Army's ground forces are in disarray after all their technology is disabled by Gengai, Ougai rallies them with a speech and personally leads them towards Kabukicho. He also restores the morale of his Liberation Army when the Kabukicho fighters pushed them back by just the roar of his voice. [[spoiler:Doesn't last long when he encounters Hedoro.]]
-->'''Ougai:''' If you can't use guns, pick up axes! If your axes break, swing your fists! If your fists break, you've got us Dakini! The war is only just beginning! [...] We're not the only ones who lost use of our weapons. The earthlings are the same way. Not only that, we have far and away the greater numbers! Let's crush our enemy with our overwhelming advantage in resources! We'll destroy that huge cannon, make contact with the rear, and exterminate those monkeys from this planet! We'll cut open a path! Forwaaaaard!
* RuggedScar: A long scar runs down his dead left eye, instantly marking him as an experienced warrior.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Ougai is a proud Dakini warrior who longs for the days where war wasn't exclusively fought and won with new technology. To him the field of battle is a sacred ceremony for men to bet their pride and their lives.
* SuperStrength: Strong enough to smash through the iron gate protecting Kabukicho in one blow. He is also capable of catching huge boulders thrown by catapults mid-air and throw them back.
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: After seemingly being defeated, Ougai reveals he is still alive by throwing his massive club at Kyubei from behind, causing severe injuries and knocking them out of the fight.
* YouAreInCommandNow: Takes command of the Altana Liberation Army's forces in Edo when all their technology is disabled and communication with their commanders is cut off.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Soutatsu]]
!!Soutatsu
!!!Voiced by: Masayuki Katou
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soutatsu.jpg]]

Leader of the Shinra forces hired by Altana Liberation Army.
----
* BadassCape: Wears a long white cloak that partially covers his body and hides his weapon.
* BandagedFace: Soutatsu and his Shinra warriors all cover their faces with bandages.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: His Shinra warriors utilize it as a group, allowing themselves to get stabbed by their enemies to trap their weapons, leaving them ripe for killing by their comrades.
* DogpileOfDoom: Several of his warriors pile themselves on top of Jirocho to disable him, letting Soutatsu deal the final blow, only for it be revealed that Gintoki hid under the pile of Shinra warriors and blocked the attack, saving Jirocho's life.
* IHaveYourWife: Soutatsu and his Shinra warriors sneak inside Kabukicho during the fight with Ougai, capturing Tae and the cabaret girls who have been throwing logs at the Dakini from the rooftops. Soutatsu tells the defenders of Kabukicho they will kill one of the women every ten seconds unless they hand over the one who disabled their technology. When Gengai shows up to surrender himself along with Otose, he's interrupted by several people claiming to be the one who did it as a way of stalling for time, ultimately causing the Shinra to throw Tae and the other women off the building to attack the newcomers.
* {{Ninja}}: The Shinra are Amanto that essentially work as ninjas. While Ougai and his Dakini warriors brute-force their way through Kabukicho, Soutatsu and his Shinra sneak inside to analyse the weapon that disabled their technology, before taking hostages to find the one who made it.
* NotAfraidToDie: Soutatsu claims that all of his Shinra warriors are perfectly willing to sacrifice themselves for the group in order to kill an enemy, whether it be piling on top of them with sheer number, allowing themselves to be run through by enemies to trap their weapons, or even letting their own comrades slice through their bodies as a smokescreen to catch the enemy off guard.
* OhCrap: When he charges at and attacks Otose, a sword stabs up from the floor and breaks it apart, causing him to visibly express shock and surprise.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Soutatsu has no interest in honor or the cause of his employers, only the money he and his warriors will be paid with.
* PointyEars: As a Shinra, Soutatsu has pointy ears like an elf.
* ReverseGrip: Fights with his sword held in reverse.
* UnhandThemVillain: Soutatsu holds Tae and the other cabaret girls captive atop a high building and when told by several people to release them, they just throw the women off the building. Luckily, someone was able to throw out a net to save them.
* WreckedWeapon: He gets his sword completely shattered by Gintoki's bokuto when he tries to stab Jirocho, who was buried under a pile of dead Shinra warriors. This forces him to pick up a new weapon, but he is beaten by Gintoki before he can use it.
* ZergRush: Because of their numbers and willingness to sacrifice themselves to kill an enemy, Soutatsu and his Shinra soldiers try to overwhelm Gintoki and [[spoiler:Jirocho]] with sheer numbers, literally piling themselves on them to make them vulnerable.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Son]]
!!Master Son
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/master_son.jpg]]

Leader of the Yato forces hired by the Altana Liberation Army.
----
* AchillesHeel: Master Son's ability to change the size and mass of his body at will makes him a powerful and surprisingly agile opponent, but the technique has a critical weakness: He cannot strengthen all parts of his body at once, and if he focuses all his strength into one area, the other parts of his body are left weak. Kagura and Kamui exploit this by repeatedly attacking his crotch, which he hasn't strengthened.
* BadassCape: Like most Yato, Master Son wears a cape to cover his body and he is a powerful warrior.
* CastFromLifespan: Because he stops himself from aging with sage-like techniques which puts his body in a state of death, reverting to his true form and strength shaves off some of his lifespan, which is why he rarely uses it.
* ClothingDamage: His clothes rip apart as he turns into a huge muscled warrior. All except his headgear and part of his pants.
* CoveredWithScars: His body is covered with scars all over under his clothes.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: In order to counter Kagura and Kamui's constant attacks against his crotch, Master Son makes the "brilliant" decision of enlargening and strengthening it, before wrapping it around his body as a shield and taunting them about being invincible. He fails to realise this immobilizes him until Kagura kicks him off the roof and then dropkicks down on his unprotected head together with Kamui.
* ElderlyImmortal: He is an ancient Yato known as the Elder and is hundreds of years old, having been born back when the Yato still lived on Kouan, when Yato with the same strength as Hosen were dime a dozen. He owes his long lifespan to special sage-like techniques that allow him to change his body between a state of death and life.
* ExpositionOfImmortality: Reveals the fact that he is hundreds of years old by calling '''Hosen''' just a strong brat and reminiscing how back when the Yato still lived on Kouan, there were many more on the same level of strength as him.
* TheFaceless: His face is completely covered in darkness under his hat and hood, with only the glow of his eyes being visible.
* GracefulLoser: Despite his extremely humiliating defeat at the hands of Kagura and Kamui, he takes his loss pretty well, remarking with pride that the Yato blood still remains strong.
* GroinAttack: Kagura and Kamui repeatedly attack his crotch when it's revealed strengthening parts of his body leaves the other parts weaker.
* GrowingMusclesSequence: When he reverts to his true form and strength, he turns into a huge muscular warrior who towers over his own men.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Annoyed with Kagura and Kamui repeatedly attacking his crotch, Master Son gets the bright idea of strengthening and enlarging his... private parts... to wrap around him and serve as a shield. Unfortunately for him, this leaves him immobilized, and Kagura simply pushes him off a building before she and Kamui dropkicks down on his head, knocking him into the ground below.
* ILied: When Enshou reveals he is going to blow up the planet, Master Son tries to convince Gengai to help bring back their machines in order to kill Enshou instead. When he seemingly gets his hands on something that will make the machines work again, he reveals he has no intention of killing Enshou after all. Then Gengai pulls a fast one on him by revealing what he gave them was explosives, allowing Kagura to save him in the confusion.
* InTheHood: Wears a hood below his hat, which helps cover his face in darkness.
* LightningBruiser: Like most Yato, Master Son is both super strong and very fast, catching Kagura off-guard when she tries to escape with the captive Gengai.
* MagicPants: After turning huge and muscled, his clothes all rip apart except for his headgear and the upper part of his pants.
* OhCrap: His eyes are wideshot in panic when Kagura pushes him off a building while he's wrapped in his own enlargened genitals, before Kagura and Kamui then dropkick him into the ground.
* OldMaster: He is a short elderly Yato carrying a wooden walking stick who has the title of master.
* OneWingedAngel: Reverts to his true strength to fight Kagura and Kamui, turning into a hulking freak with huge muscles who towers over his own men.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: He is tiny compared to his own soldiers, but is still a powerful Yato warrior.
* {{Sizeshifter}}: He is able to manipulate the size and mass of his body at will, including individual body parts. In fact if he strengthens one part of his body, other parts get weaker.
* SuperStrength: He is a powerful Yato warrior, capable of sending Gengai flying into a wall with a thrust of his walking staff.
* WeakenedByTheLight: Exposure to sunlight can weaken and even kill Yato, so Master Son covers his face in the darkness of his hat and hood. He also holds back his forces from attacking the defenders of Edo during the day precisely because of this weakness, waiting until night before striking.
* WeaponBasedCharacterization: He carries a wooden walking staff instead of an umbrella, which fits his image as an OldMaster.

!!Kagura's Family

[[folder:Umibouzu]]
!!Umibouzu
!!!Voiced by: Creator/ShowHayami (Japanese), Creator/JohnGremillion (English)
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/umibouzu_1_892.png]]

The father of Kagura and Kamui, he's another of the last members of the Yato Clan. He travels the galaxy as a famous alien hunter. Like all Yato, he fights using an umbrella. He is one of the few characters able to overpower Kagura. He first appears when aliens go berserk in Edo, and he uses the opportunity to take Kagura away with him, despite her desire to stay with the Yorozuya. He relents after fighting an especially powerful alien off together with Gintoki.

He makes a few appearances afterwards, first via a letter warning Kagura about Sadaharu, and then via his own [[ADayInTheSpotlight day in the spotlight]]. He appears again after Gintoki defeats Hosen, warning him about Kamui, who now wants to fight Gintoki himself.
----
* ActionDad: Being from the Yato clan, he's undeniably a badass dad and his children got their SuperStrength from him.
* AllEncompassingMantle: The long cape he wears is big enough to cover most of his body.
* AmazonChaser: Fell for his future wife Kouka while fighting off giant monsters with her, chasing her despite all his instincts telling him how dangerous she was.
* AnArmAndALeg:
** Loses his left arm from being attacked by his son Kamui [[spoiler:when it was in possession of an Altana crystal needed to prolong Kouka's life.]]
** He also [[spoiler:loses his right arm after Utsuro resurrects himself and yanks his sword out of Umibouzu's body.]]
* ArtificialLimbs: It's hidden underneath a glove and a long sleeve, but his left arm is actually a prosthetic. [[spoiler:After Utsuro rips off his original arm as well as his prosthetic, he later gains two new ones that fires ''rockets''!]]
* BadassCape: Always wears a long cape that covers his body.
* BadassFamily: The Yato are a race of badasses, but his family is a stand-out case, featuring some of the strongest of their race.
* BloodKnight: Shades of it, in that it's heavily implied he works as an alien hunter not just to distance himself from his family (out of fear of accidentally killing Kagura), but also because he genuinely enjoys seeking out dangerous aliens for him to hunt. Hosen also implies that he was definitely one in his youth.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: He left Kagura with her dying mother after an incident with Kamui, where Kamui tried to kill him, and Umibouzu tried the same in retaliation. The only thing stopping him from doing so was Kagura. He left, afraid that Kagura might one day turn on him too, and that he would kill his own daughter. He tries to justify his leaving, but realizes that, for the most part, he was just being a coward. However, he feels no remorse over Kamui whom he considers a "disgraceful idiot".
* ADayInTheSpotlight: He gets an episode where he helps liberate a planet from its rampant environmental computer. [[spoiler:It's really a hair growth shampoo commercial.]]
* DisappearedDad: He was rarely at home while Kagura and Kamui were growing up [[spoiler:because he was looking for a way to cure his dying wife]]. This got worse when Kamui tried to kill him, which made Umibouzu afraid that his family's Yato instincts would make them kill each other one day.
* DodgyToupee: He wears a toupee while trying to save a planet from a rogue environmental computer. It's a rather obvious one too and keeps sliding off his head, while the ones who called him to the planet are struggling not to pay attention to it.
* DoggedNiceGuy: He kept hanging around Kouka in her deserted home planet despite her initial indifference towards him, hoping to spark her interest in visiting other planets. His efforts did eventually win her over.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: In the original 4:3 aspect ratio animes, he can come off as frail and lanky. By the time the anime transitions to its current 16:9 ratio, the way Umibozu is drawn has changed significantly (i.e. with around the same body type as Gintoki), to the point that the viewer may even think he's getting younger.
* EnemyMine: He temporarily allies with [[spoiler:Utsuro and the Harusame]] solely to get to Kamui, but quickly turns on them again when they try to get involved.
* FakeArmDisarm: His left arm is bitten off by the alien infesting the Terminal, revealing it is mechanical. Much later, Utsuro cuts it off as well, forcing him to fight him with one arm.
* FamilyThemeNaming: His real name Kanko and both Kagura and Kamui's names all contain the kanji for god (kami, 神).
* GogglesDoNothing: He wears a pair of goggles, probably to protect his eyes on desert planets.
* HairTodayGoneTomorrow: Used to have long hair when he was younger, and started to use a braid before his onset of baldness. Kouka was already referring him as "baldy" back then.
* HandicappedBadass: Not at all impaired by the fact his left arm is actually a prosthetic.
* HenpeckedHusband: He says the most powerful being he has encountered in the entire universe was his wife, admitting he was helpless against her. As Mutsu puts it, "the strongest man in the universe becomes the weakest at home."
* ItsAllMyFault: He blames himself for the current state of his family.
* IWasQuiteALooker: He was wildly handsome and manly in his younger days. He also had a large mane of black hair, which Kouka started to braid once they started a family together.
* LightningBruiser: Being a Yato, he has strength, speed and endurance to match.
* LoveAtFirstSight: From the moment he laid eyes on Kouka, his instincts told him she was the one for him and gave him a boner.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: [[spoiler:His wife Kouka was immortal as long as she remained on Kouan. She left with him to start a family, but sadly, she died in a few years due to the lack of Altana that kept her alive.]]
* MeaningfulName: Umibouzu is a legendary creature who lives in the ocean, characterized for having a big, bald head.
* OneManArmy: Umibouzu was the only one among the Yato to stand up to Hosen and challenge his rule, taking on all of his minions alone before proceeding to fight with Hosen for three days straight. He also single-handedly mops the floor with several Harusame divisions when they attack him and Abuto on Rakuyo.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: For a long time he was only known as Umibouzu, but his real name is later revealed to be Kanko.
* PapaWolf: He'll try to kill anyone who dares to hurt his daughter.
-->'''Umibouzu:''' ''(in a letter to Kagura)'' If anything happens, all you need to do is send me a letter. I'll go over there and kill everybody.
* ParasolOfPain: His main weapon is his umbrella, as these are the preferred weapons of all Yato.
* ParentsAsPeople: He's tragically distant from his family, but still loves and cares about Kagura. After he finds out Kagura ran away from home, he goes to Earth to look for her and tries to take her away from the Yorozuya, thinking they're just using her for her SuperStrength. Once he realizes Gintoki and Shinpachi do care for Kagura as if she was family, he decides she's in good hands and lets her stay on Earth.
* SuperStrength: As one of the strongest of the Yato, Umibouzu is also considered one of the strongest characters of the entire series.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: [[spoiler:He was inadvertently responsible for the separation of his family. He took his wife Kouka away from her home planet, unaware the Altana there was what kept her alive. Kouka fell terminally ill and Umibouzu left home regularly to search for a cure. Kamui eventually snapped at his father, accusing him of basically killing Kouka. After Kamui cut off his arm, Umibouzu almost killed his own son and Kamui abandoned the family.]]

Kagura and Kamui's mother, Kouka was a strong and beautiful Yato. Like her other family members would she often hide her feelings behind sweet smiles.
----
* ActionGirl: As one of the strongest Yato in the series, she was capable of handling even giant monsters with ease.
* TheAloner: She was the SoleSurvivor of the members of the Yato Clan who chose to stay on the destroyed Kouan. Before Umibouzu met her, Kouka lived all alone in her deserted planet where the only other living things were monsters, yet she kept refusing to leave [[spoiler:because she knew she couldn't survive for long in any other planet]].
* AnimeChineseGirl: Like her daughter, Kouka is dressed like a typical Chinese girl in anime.
* BraidsOfAction: Ties her hair up in a long braid.
* DelicateAndSickly: Kagura's flashbacks show Kouka bedridden because of her terminal illness. [[spoiler:The source of her illness was lack of Altana as she needed it to stay alive, but leaving her home planet made her weak and sickly until she finally died.]]
* DefrostingIceQueen: She was rather cold and emotionless until she met Umibouzu and became a mother, becoming more warm and open in the process.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: Her husband held her in his arms as she died.
* FlowerMotifs: Flowers are often used as a symbol for Kouka [[spoiler:since her family compared her to a flower that withered away after being picked up]].
* FondMemoriesThatCouldHaveBeen: Right before dying, she imagined Kamui returning home and her family finally going to Earth the four together.
* GoOutWithASmile: She imagined her family coming together and smiled as her illness finally took her life.
* IdiotHair: She has a long strand of hair, which she passed on to Kamui.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: The first signs of her disease is her coughing up blood, which falls on the [[BloodSplatteredInnocents newborn Kagura]].
* {{Irony}}: Falling in love with Umibouzu made her wish to not live alone anymore, so she left Kouan to start a family with him. [[spoiler:Sadly, Kouka leaving her home planet caused her to fall terminally ill, which ended up tearing her family apart. Umibouzu kept leaving home in order to search for a cure for his wife and Kamui left because he couldn't bear to see his mother slowly die.]]
* MayflyDecemberRomance: [[spoiler:Kouka was in fact an immortal who had probably lived many years when her husband met her. Not wanting to spend eternity alone, she left with Umibouzu so they could start a family, despite not being able to live a long life without Kouan's Altana supply.]]
* MeaningfulName: Her name is written as "bay flower". [[spoiler:A flower that is picked will wither similar to how Kouka became terminally ill as a result of leaving her home planet.]]
* MissingMom: Kagura and Kamui's dead mother.
* MotherlySidePlait: She wore her hair in a single braid over one shoulder. Since she's Kagura and Kamui's MissingMom, this look just suits her all the more.
* TheNicknamer: Called Umibouzu "baldy" long before he even got bald.
* NoSocialSkills: Living alone on Kouan for a long time means she has little experience in how to deal with other people.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died before the series began, but her character is explored through flashbacks and comments by her family.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: She only appears in flashbacks, but her death is the main cause of Kagura being estranged from her father and brother, as well as the animosity between Umibouzu and Kamui.
* SmokingIsCool: Smoked a long kiseru pipe like Takasugi and Tsukuyo does.
* TheStoic: When Umibouzu found her on the planet Kouan, she was cold and showed little in the way of emotions.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She appears cold and emotionless, but through her relationship with Umibouzu and their children we see her warmer side.
* SuperStrength: She's even stronger than Umibouzu, who's usually considered to be the strongest Yato alongside Hosen.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: [[spoiler:Kouka was an immortal supplied by Altana like Utsuro. Not wanting to spend eternity all alone in her deserted home planet, Kouka left with Umibouzu to start a family with him, despite knowing the lack of Altana would inevitably kill her.]]
* YourDaysAreNumbered: [[spoiler:Without her home planet's Altana sustaining her, Kouka could only live a few more years anywhere else. She knew this, but still chose to spend her short time left with her new family.]]

An Amanto prince that regularly visits Edo. He likes collecting unique and dangerous animal/alien species and when there is a MonsterOfTheWeek episode, he's usually the one at fault.

He really has little idea of how repulsive the rest of the characters find him.
----
* AccidentalMisnaming: It's Prince Hata, not Prince Baka (Idiot Prince).
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: He's purple.
* AnimalLover: Prince Hata self-admits that he loves every single breathing thing in the universe (the more stranger, the better)... except ''humans''.
* BackForTheFinale: After a ''long'' absence from the manga, he returns in the final arc of the series.
* ButtMonkey: Anytime he appears, he ends up humiliated or beaten up in some manner.
* CatchPhrase: [[GratuitousEnglish LOVE AND PEACE]]. With accompanying hand motions.
* TheChewToy: His main purpose in the series is to be humiliated, beaten up and chewed on.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: While he was initially a recurring ButtMonkey, he completely disappears from the manga after the Umibouzu arc. He later reappears hundreds of chapters later during the final arc.
* DullSurprise: His "acting" while dubbing over Takasugi and the other characters in the anime. All of it, really.
* FatIdiot: He is both fat and stupid.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The foolish sibling to his older brother Barkas' responsible sibling.
* {{Gonk}}: Just take look at him. He is old, fat and losing hair.
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler:It is revealed late in the series that he actually doesn't consider himself a ruler worthy of Oukoku, having kept the title of prince and leaving the throne empty until his brother Barkas will return to rule alongside him.]]
* IWasQuiteTheLooker: [[spoiler:He was very [[{{Bishonen}} beautiful]] in his youth, though he became more of a {{gonk}} as his years of glory (and innocence) were left behind.]]

* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: He's green.
* BackForTheFinale: After a long absence from the manga, he returns together with his boss in the final arc of the series.
* ButtMonkey: Like his boss, he ends up humiliated or beaten in some way. Probably one of the many reasons he ''cannot'' stand him.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Used to be a recurring ButtMonkey alongside Hata, but he also disappears from the manga after the Umibouzu arc. He finally reappears hundreds of chapters later during the final arc.
* DirtyCoward: Will gladly offer up the prince to save his own hide.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's rude and constantly insults everybody, including the prince.
* NeverMyFault: While he previously chastised some assistants on the possibility of breaking glass cages containing rare aliens, he quickly tries to shift away blame when he himself breaks one of them.
* OldRetainer: He is Hata's old butler and has served him for many years, even supporting his bid for the throne of Oukoku. However, unlike most examples, Jii isn't exactly reliable and loyal, and will throw the prince under a bus to save his own skin.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: His real name is Nes, but he is mostly just called Jii because of his role as Hata's old butler. His real name isn't even revealed until the final arc of the series.

----
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: The anime shows him to have blue-colored skin.
* CoolOldGuy: An elderly and competent retainer of the royal family.
* {{Expy}}: The way he is drawn is uncannily similar to Ramba Ral of the original 1979 ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam'', while his politics echo a bit of the former's father Jimba as shown in ''[[Manga/MobileSuitGundamTheOrigin The Origin]]'' manga prequel.
* FreudWasRight: He is mocked for the small size of the antennae on his forehead, known as the '''Chinko'''. He is still very sore about this and has gathered followers known as the "Modest Member Faction" in order to depose Prince Hata and end the practice of determining someone's worth by the size of their Chinko.
* NonActionGuy: He does not appear to be a fighter himself, leaving it to the soldiers who support him.
* OldRetainer: He is an elderly retainer of the royal family and supported Prince Barkas' bid for the throne many years ago.
* {{Revenge}}: He wants revenge against Prince Hata and Jii for exiling Prince Barkas.
* UndyingLoyalty: He is still very loyal to Prince Barkas after many years, seeking to avenge his exile by killing Prince Hata.

* BrainInAJar: As Sagi, this is how he actually looks like.
* BreathWeapon: Shoots powerful laser beams out of his mouth.
* HealingFactor: A robotic variation. He will self-repair if severely damaged, as seen when Katsura cuts him in half.
* TheQuietOne: Even had it enforced as a rule for the Renho and doesn't even speak himself. However, as soon as he becomes voiced, he hams it up.
* TalkingWithSigns: Established it as a rule among the Renho and employs it himself. Of course, when he begins speaking for real, he drops it.

* CaptainErsatz: Of [[Anime/LupinIII Fujiko Mine]].
* DefectorFromDecadence: Rebels against the Renho to stop their invasion.
* DisneyDeath: She seems to sacrifice herself at the end of the Renho arc, only to show up alive and well afterwards with no explanation.
* HeroicSacrifice: Subverted. She seemingly sacrifices herself to weaken and destroy the Renho mother ship, but survives. How she did it is not explained.
* LovableSexManiac: Extremely perverted and shows off all the time.
* SpyCatsuit: Wears one when she confronts Sagi. Quite fitting, given she's an {{Expy}} of one of the most famous catsuit wearers in all of anime.

----
* ArcVillain: Serves as the villain of the Ryugujo arc.
* BadBoss: She cares little for her own subordinates and even subjects them to her aging gas. She comes around at the end when she orders them to leave her behind after she's caught under the rubble.
* ElderlyImmortal: She is an elderly lady who is thousands of years old.
* EvilOldFolks: She used to be a kind ruler, but she's grown bitter and hateful in her old age.
* FloatingContinent: Before sinking into the sea, Ryugujo was originally a flying city-state capable of traveling through space. When Otohime tries to invade Edo, the city briefly rises out of the sea again.
* GreenEyedMonster: Envious of people who are younger than herself and have retained their beauty, and unable to find a way to keep herself young, she unleashes a gas on people to age them all up to be older and uglier than herself.
* HeelFaceTurn: Reforms at the end of her arc.
* IWasQuiteALooker: She ''was'' quite beautiful in her youth.
* LargeAndInCharge: She seems to have grown quite tall in her old age.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Her desire to make everybody else old is to make sure her love Urashima will recognise her as the most beautiful woman when he wakes up from his coma.
* NoblewomansLaugh: Fittingly enough laughs like a haughty and arrogant noblewoman.
* PublicDomainCharacter: Otohime is a character from an old Japanese story about [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urashima_Tar%C5%8D the fisher Urashima]] and his trip to Ryugujo.
* RedemptionEarnsLife: At the end of the arc, she orders for people to evacuate the crumbling Ryugujo while she's caught under rubble, but her attempted sacrifice causes people to go back to save her. Afterwards, she lives as a common shop owner in Edo and seems all the happier for it.
* SharkPool: She has a pool of sharks in her palace, which she lowers Tae into for mocking her, only for her to be freed by Kyubei and Kagura while the sharks are beaten up.

A turtle from Ryugujo. Once a captain of the guard, Kamenashi defected and rebelled against Otohime to stop her plans.
----
* BlatantLies: When he is caught spying on girls on the beach and recording them, he insists that he was not and instead recording kelp. Even when the evidence presents itself, he claims that he was filming a swimsuit commercial.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Is very insistent that the skeleton in his cave is really just his wife; she's just thin and tired after giving birth.
* CoolShades: Has a pair of sunglasses that look pretty cool. Too bad the rest of him doesn't.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Once a high-ranking member of the guard, but decided to defect to stop Otohime's plans, being labelled a rebel in the process.
* ImmuneToBullets: He ''himself'' is as squishy as a normal human, but his turtle shell is capable of withstanding bullets. When the Ryugujo guards fire upon them they all hide behind his shell.
* NerdGlasses: The glasses he normally wear aren't particularly flattering when combined with his face and his receding hairline.
* StatOVision: Has a "Spouzer" (totally not a [[Anime/DragonBallZ Scouter]]), which he uses to measure the PowerLevels of the group, so they can split their battle power evenly. In true ''Dragon Ball'' fashion, it ends up exploding.

!!Tendoshu
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tendoshu_1.jpg]]

The Tendoshu is a mysterious council of twelve who rule various planets, including Earth, and are the true power behind the Bakufu. Most of the council consist of Amanto, except for Utsuro, the only human member of the group. Through Utsuro, the Tendoshu are supported by the cult of assassins known as the Naraku. The Tendoshu are the ones responsible for the Amanto's invasion of Earth and the various atrocities committed to take control of it.

The Tendoshu's rule over the various planets lie in their control of the Altana gates. The Altana is an energy source, said to be the lifeforce of a planet coalescing in a single place. It was eventually discovered how to harness that energy, which was used by the Amanto to rapidly advance technological development, but which also led to countless wars for control of the Altana gates. After a non-aggression pact was formed, the Altana Preservation Society was founded to monitor the Altanas. The Altana Preservation Society later morphed into the council of the Tendoshu, as they had sole access to the energy source.
----
* AllEncompassingMantle: All members of the Tendoshu wear big cloaks that conceal their entire body.
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:After explaining his plan to the Tendoshu, Utsuro cuts all of them up into pieces off-screen, who are eventually found by the Altana Liberation Army. Because they were given his immortal blood, they are stuck as living rotting corpses in tanks of liquid, unable to truly die.]]
** Subverted. [[spoiler:After the Silver Soul Arc, the last information from them was that they are back.]]
* BoardToDeath: [[spoiler:During a meeting with the Tendoshu, Utsuro explains his plan of blowing up the Altanas on various planets to lead the Altana Liberation Army to Earth to get revenge on the Tendoshu, before he cuts them all into pieces off-screen.]]
* BorrowedBiometricBypass: Each member of the Tendoshu except for Utsuro have a mark on their hand, which serves as a key that allows them to activate and control an Altana gate. Specifically to avoid this trope and prevent people from cutting off their hands and using them to take control of the Altanas, the keys are connected to their hearts, and cannot be used if the hand is cut off or the user is dead.
** Utsuro gets around this by [[spoiler:supplying several Tendoshu members with his immortal blood. Because of overusing his blood, their bodies start to rot, and in exchange for helping them he demands they give them their hands. Because of the immortal blood, their hands are still considered "alive", allowing him to use the keys to blow up the Altanas on several planets, leading the Altana Liberation Army to come to Earth to hunt down the Tendoshu in revenge.]]
* BigBadDuumvirate: The Tendoshu are a council of twelve equals that contend with Takasugi for the position of main villain. While Takasugi is more prominent and active, as well as being personally connected to Gintoki, the Tendoshu are the true rulers of the country who are responsible for almost everything bad that happened in the backstory. [[spoiler:While they manage to take the position from Takasugi when he is put in a coma, they are later betrayed by Utsuro, one of their own, who takes over as the BigBad for the last part of the series.]]
* HatOfAuthority: The Tendoshu are immediately identifiable by their domed straw hats.
* HealingFactor: Subverted that having Utsuro's blood actually rots their bodies. [[spoiler:Double subverted when the Tendoshu can regenerate from their wounds in their fights against the Joui Trio.]]
* KickTheDog: After finally having defeated and captured Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi during the war, a Tendoshu member decided to break them by presenting them with their beloved teacher Shoyo and forcing Gintoki to kill him in order to save his friends.
* LaserGuidedKarma: As seen in SadisticChoice below, after Gintoki killed Shouyou, he came back as Utsuro, who gives them immortal blood, and cuts them up into pieces, basically leaving them as immortal, rotting corpses that can never die. [[spoiler:Eventually coming back to serve Utsuro's will.]]
* ManBehindTheMan: As the true rulers of the Earth, the Tendoshu control the Bakufu through their puppet Sadasada and later Nobunobu.
* MinorMajorCharacter: Despite their importance as a group, none of the Tendoshu members except for Utsuro have any names or individual characterization.
* NonActionBigBad: Apart from Utsuro, the Tendoshu themselves don't fight, leaving it to their minions, such as the Naraku. [[spoiler:They do fight in the last remaining chapters of the Silver Soul Arc, but as Utsuro's extensions complete with his skills and regenerative abilities.]]
* NoNameGiven: None of the Tendoshu members are given any names, except for Utsuro.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:After the Silver Soul Arc the last information about them was that they recovered their bodies, but their whereabouts were unknown.]]
* OmniscientCouncilOfVagueness: A mysterious council of twelve who only rarely appear in the series and control the Bakufu from behind the scenes.
* SadisticChoice: When Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi were defeated and captured during the war, one Tendoshu member presented them with Shoyo and gave Gintoki a choice: Either kill his two friends, or kill Shoyo. Gintoki chose to save his friends and kill Shouyou.
** This would eventually come back to majorly bite them back in the ass later on. After Shouyou was killed, he was reborn and Utusro, who would eventually give the Tendoshu members his immortal blood, which causes their bodies to rot, and eventually left as sliced-up, still-living rotting corpses that cannot die.
