Tartaros is the last of the three guilds of the dreaded Balam Alliance to make an appearance. Several of their members, including their guild master E.N.D., are demons from the Books of Zeref. Founded by Mard Geer Tartaros, the guild's goal is to wipe out all magic on the continent using the Magic Council's ultimate weapon Face in order to awaken E.N.D. and reunite with their creator.

In X791, Tartaros destroys the Magic Council with the help of two Saber Tooth defectors. In retaliation, Fairy Tail declares war and launches an attack on the dark guild's base.

* AllForNothing: All that destruction of the Magic Council, murder of the councilors, and fighting with Fairy Tail in the name of awakening their master, and in the end they failed miserably. The activation of Face was foiled by Fairy Tail and the dragons and therefore they couldn't awake their master. At least half of the Demon Gates died, including Mard Geer, their base was nearly destroyed, and the book of E.N.D. was taken away by Zeref.
* AndIMustScream: All the surviving demons were eventually absorbed into Mirajane's ultimate Satan Soul, Mirajane-Alegria. Seilah got taken over as her own separate Satan Soul, Mirajane-Seilah.
* AntagonisticOffspring: The true purpose behind their creation. Zeref created the demons and made them so powerful specifically so that they could kill him.
* BadassCrew: A more villainous example, with each demon being very powerful and mortally dangerous on their own way, not only being able to go toe-to-toe with Fairy Tail's strongest members, but also damn near killing them each and every time.
* BusCrash: If there were any survivors, assuming they weren't absorbed by Mirajane into her Satan Soul: Algeria, they are guaranteed to have died once Zeref is finally killed, as their life force is tied to his.
* Curse: Their method of attack is curse power, which is distinct from magic power as it draws purely from negative emotions.
* TheDreaded: Despite the shortage of information on its account compared to Oraciòn Seis and Grimoire Heart, Tartaros quickly became the most feared dark guild thanks to subsuming many of the proxy guilds of its allies and becoming the de facto most powerful dark guild on the continent. When the truth of both its identity (a guild filled with genocidal demons created by Zeref) and its goals (the destruction of all magic in order to awaken the most powerful demon of all and the destruction of mankind) were finally made known, it only justified and amplified that fearsome reputation.
* Egopolis: It's implied by Mard Geer's full name, Mard Geer Tartaros, that the Underworld King named the guild after himself when he's revealed to be the one who really created the guild, not E.N.D..
* EldritchLocation: Their headquarters, Cube, is actually a GiantFlyer that can absorb anything that is on its body that isn't one of the demons (except the Mooks), turning its victims into parts of the architecture.
* EvilPowerVacuum: With the Oración Seis imprisoned by the end of the Nirvana arc, and Grimoire Heart more or less defunct as a guild due to deaths and defections of its strongest by the end of the Sirius Island arc, Tartaros stepped in during the intervening seven years as the final member of the Balam Alliance and assimilated many of their proxy guilds into their own.
* HumanoidAbomination: While exactly how humanoid in appearance they are varies between each member, none of them are human (at least not anymore for some), but are rather demons. Their OneWingedAngel forms show off their true appearances and subsequently what they really are, often doing away with whatever semblance to humanity they had.
* HumansAreInsects: By principle, these demons view humans as being lower than insects. Suffice to say, they're pretty shocked when these "puny humans" start doing them in.
* InSeriesNickname: Tartaros is occasionally referred to as "Zeref's Bookshelf," due to the fact that the vast majority of their members are demons from Zeref's books.
* IWillFindYou: Kyôka, and later Zeref himself, have stated that despite being demons that Zeref created, Tartaros has never actually met Zeref in person, and it's one of their life's dreams to finally get the chance to do so, which explains a lot of their actions and their lack of empathy for humanity. Kyôka pretty much flat out states they're only doing what they think Zeref would want of them. This is because it's "coded" in them to serve Zeref regardless of their well being.
* KillAllHumans: While their endgame is to resurrect E.N.D. and return to Zeref, they figure that wiping out humanity would make a good bonus, and they're poised to do it through their plans.
* KilledOffForReal: A surprisingly large number of its members are dead by the end of their arc compared to most antagonists. What's particularly notable is that the protagonists, who are usually averse to lethal force, are directly responsible for the majority of their deaths. Even the story arc's survivors are confirmed to either been absorbed by Mirajane into her Satan Soul: Algeria or have died together with Zeref, as that is how they were designed.
* KnightOfCerebus: They start off the arc by killing most of the Magic Council, and their arc includes several attempted assassinations on the former Council members, DeadlyGas attacks that kill hundreds of innocent civilians, and torture.
* TheLegionsOfHell: Tartaros is made up almost entirely of demons from the Books of Zeref.
* TheMagicGoesAway: Their goal to revive E.N.D. entails activating Face, a magic pulse bomb capable of wiping out all magic on the continent, which they believe is preventing their master from leaving his book. Since Tartaros uses curses instead of magic, this would also leave humanity virtually defenseless against them.
* MadeOfMagic: The name of the demons of this guild, Etherious, comes from the Ether-nano (a.k.a. raw magic energy) from which Zeref created them.
* MeaningfulName: In Greek Mythology, Tartaros is an area of the Greek underworld reserved to torment souls that are judged to be evil, making it the rough equivalent of Hell in other religions. All of their high ranking members are demons from the Books of Zeref, who believe they are passing judgment on humans.
* Mooks: Their footsoldiers come in an armored design with magical staffs to use during battle. It's implied both by the manga/anime and more explicitly in VideoGame/FairyTail2020 that most if not all of them are lesser demons created through magic and/or forcibly transforming humans.
* NoOntologicalInertia: Zeref designed his demons to die together with him. This naturally guarantees their deaths once he is finally killed by Mavis.
* OminousFloatingCastle: Cube, their base of operations, is a giant floating cube but the demons mainly remain inside a worn down castle. It can be turned into Pluto's Grim, which destroyed part of Fairy Tail's home town before being sliced up by the Celestial Spirit King.
* OneManArmy: Like Oraciòn Seis, they have this reputation, as a single member of Tartaros can defeat an entire kingdom’s military force.
* OneWingedAngel: Most members have shown the ability to enter their "Etherious Form", changing into their true forms and enhancing their powers.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: They did absolutely nothing on-screen before their own arc began, and were only mentioned in passing with almost nothing being known about them. And then they made their on-screen debut in a very big way.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: Tataros's high-ranking members are all demons from the Books of Zeref. They are distinguished from other demons (like the ones on Galuna Island) with the name "Etherious".
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Almost all of its most important members possess a vast scale of power and so deadly skills that they represent a serious threat across the continent of Ishgal. Moreover, Pluto's Grim, once activated, would have dispersed an entire city on its own with ease if it had not been for Celestial Spirit King.
* PoisonousPerson: In a sense; some have bodies that contain Devil Particles, which are toxic and potentially lethal to humans, especially so to wizards. Tempester in particular used these to launch a magical equivalent of a chemical weapons attack on Hargeon.
* ThePowerOfHate: "Curses" are a type of magic that draw their power directly from negative feelings such as hatred.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Most of the more human looking Etherious look pretty young, but they have been around for nearly as long as their creator Zeref.
* ReligionOfEvil: Many who have witnessed their gatherings describe them as a cult that worships demons. They're only partially correct; they don't worship demons, they are demons. However, they do appear to worship Zeref himself, with a shrine set up in his honor in their inner sanctum.
* ResurrectiveImmortality: Their headquarters has a special regeneration facility called Hell's Core, where they can instantly teleport once they're killed.
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: The last part of the Balam Alliance to appear, and by far the most dangerous. Grimoire Heart was more infamous, but mostly because they were more visible as a dark guild. Their battle also leaves Fairy Tail with physical and emotional scars that would take over a year to completely heal.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Many of the members do not get along with each other; at one point, one of their elites gleefully kills a subordinate because he found her to be annoying.
* TomeOfEldritchLore: Each demon comes from a Book of Zeref.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Zeref, to the point where they're willing to wipe out humanity and even give up their own lives for no other reason than because they think it's what Zeref wills them to do.
* UnwillingRoboticisation: A variant occurs in which they have the ability to turn humans into demons. After they try to do this to Mirajane, it's implied that not all of their members were willing.
* WellDoneSonGuy: To Zeref, despite never having actually met him in person. Their primary goal is to meet him for the first time. Most of their villainy is merely them doing what they think Zeref wants from them.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: They wiped out at least one subordinate dark guild (Succubus Eye) for failing to live up to expectations when they prepared to go all-out on their Face plan (and the ill-fated Council meeting mentions more being wiped out), and it's implied they kept the stronger members of said guilds to turn into demon fodder.

The founder and de facto guild master of Tartaros, he's known as the Underworld King and his power is beneath E.N.D. only. His Thorn Bramble curse allows him to produce an endless deluge of thorny vines that skewer his victims.
----
* AgentPeacock: An arrogant, LongHairedPrettyBoy who creates thorns and petals as his weapons, and effortlessly curb-stomps three Dragon Slayers at once.
* AlasPoorVillain: While Mard Geer is a true demon, his death at the hands of Zeref is quite sad, considering that everything he did was to fulfill his creator's desire and said creator was unmoved by such dedication. The anime even shows him tearing up as Zeref deems any further efforts from him future and reverts him to his book to burn it. Gray, who has every reason to hate demons, is infuriated at Zeref killing one of his own creations so coldly.
* ArchEnemy: He is this to the Celestial Spirit King, even dueling each other at one point in the past, though their battle remains unconcluded.
* ArcVillain: He, rather than Master E.N.D., serves as the main villain of the Tartaros arc. This is made all the more apparent when Zeref reveals Mard Geer to be the true founder and leader of the guild who used E.N.D. as a figurehead to manipulate the other demons.
* BadassLongcoat: He wears one of the coolest and fanciest in the series; it's white and black all over, and tattered at the end.
* BadBoss: Condemns many of Tartaros's own soldiers to be absorbed along with the heroes when he transforms their fortress, keeps sit on his throne and smiling after knowing that at least half of the Nine Demon Gates were defeated, and tortures Kyôka as punishment for thinking humans are even worth the effort to torture.
* BattleAura: Alternates between black and white when his Curse aura is unleashed.
* BigBadWannabe: His end game for reviving E.N.D. is actually so he can use the demon to kill their creator as intended and hog the glory for himself. Zeref reveals later on that Mard Geer found the Book of E.N.D. and formed Tartaros all on his own with the express goal of pleasing their master. However, Mard Geer's ultimate attack isn't enough to defeat Fairy Tail, proving just how far out of league he was from the beginning.
* BilingualBonus: The name of his Alegria curse means "Happiness" in Italian.
* BishonenLine: His Etherious Form, compared to those of the other male Tartaros members, subverts the usual method of just becoming a bigger, badder, more monstrous version of themselves, instead gaining a form that looks more like he's wearing an extremely impressive suit of armor with wings and a helmet, even maintaining his overall original size and ponytail.
* BlindObedience: He wants to kill Zeref not because he hates him, but because he knows Zeref created him for that very purpose. He's completely broken when he's unable to fulfill his one purpose for living.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Mard Geer doesn't really hold any malice towards humans nor is he interested in taking over the world. He simply desires to fulfill the purpose he was created for which is killing his creator Zeref. He only really comes into conflicts with light guilds due to his lack of empathy as he causes destruction across Fiore without caring what happens to the humans since he regards them as ants.
* BreakTheHaughty: Right before his death, he's been completely pounded into the ground and lived long enough to see his plans crumble apart, leaving him a sniveling wreck.
* CurbStompBattle: His "fight" against Sting and Rogue consisted of him nullifying everything they had using only one hand, while he takes his time JustToyingWithThem for his own amusement. All while Sting demands he take them more seriously.
* DeaderThanDead: His "Memento Mori" attack, the very worst curse Mard Geer can dish out, not only inflicts immediate death on contact: it wipes out the soul, ending the victim's entire existence. This was by Zeref's own design, as it would have allowed his own creation to bypass his immortality curse and fulfill his wish to die. Gray survived the curse because Silver imparted Devil Slayer Magic to his son before passing on, and it gave him resistance to curses as a result, simply absorbing the dark energies and enriching the saturation of Devil Slayer magic power in Gray, making the black markings Silver placed on his right arm expand into a half-demon transformation that mostly coats the left portion of his face and body and causes his left pupil to glow purple.
* DeathByIrony: Killed by Zeref himself after causing the entire events of the Tartaros arc, which revolved around reviving E.N.D., supposedly the one thing that can stop Zeref.
* DeathGlare: A mere glance from Mard Geer in the shadows told a scheming Rustyrose to get the heck away from Tartaros because the only thing awaiting him was imminent destruction.
* DissonantSerenity: Wears a PsychoticSmirk on his face during the heat of battle against titans like the Celestial Spirit King, to skilled warriors like the Twin Dragons. He also rather calmly lets Allegria swallow the lives of his guild's soldiers without any dismay.
* DragonInChief: While he is technically TheDragon to E.N.D, because the latter is still trapped within his book, Mard Geer is the de facto guild master of Tartaros during E.N.D's absence. In fact, Zeref admits that Mard Geer really was Tartaros's master in all but name, and he used E.N.D.'s book to rally the other demons together.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: While the strongest demons in Tartaros proved to be extremely durable and very hard to kill, Zeref had the power to forcibly seal Mard Geer back into the book that contained the Etherious's essence in living script and instantly burned it to nothingness, swiftly and mercilessly killing his own creation, because Zeref seemed him a failure.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: A running theme with Tartaros, as well as with Zeref.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: This demon just does not see what the big deal is with humans and their feelings. This is Hangingd in the anime by the Celestial Spirit King, who pities him for his incapacity to understand concepts such as love and trust.
* EvilGenius: He's the guy who came up with the technology used for Tartaros' ResurrectiveImmortality and Unwilling Demonization.
* EvilerThanThou: To put things into perspective, Kyôka had Minerva--a woman who previously tortured her opponents in a fighting tournament--shaking in her boots. This guy is so terrifying that when he tortures Kyôka, she "thanks him for the privilege", and then reacts with horror as he callously wipes out his own Mooks.
* TheExtremistWasRight: Despite how extreme his methods are, he has a very good point that his plan to destroy all magic would have starved Acnologia to death.
* FinalBoss: In VideoGame/FairyTail2020, as the Tartaros arc is the last one covered by the game.
* ForTheEvulz: He knows that Zeref created the Etherious to kill himself, yet Mard Geer justifies involving humanity as weeds in his path that he can't be bothered to step around.
* FlashStep: In his fight against the Celestial Spirit King, he dodges absolutely everything thrown at him. In a series where SuperSpeed is a ridiculously common power, him simply side-stepping an attack that leaves a giant fissure, with his PsychoticSmirk still firmly in place, oozes badass.
* FlowerMotifs: Roses, befitting his PrettyBoy appearance and the thorns corresponding to both his Thorn Curse and his status as one of Fairy Tail's deadliest foes.
* FullNameBasis: You will not find anyone in the series who refers to him simply as "Mard", not even Mard Geer himself.
* GameFace: Once he experiences the emotion of "rage", his PsychoticSmirk turns into a terrifying SlasherSmile.
* GoodWingsEvilWings: Once he enters his Etherious Form, he grows a pair of giant demonic wings on his back. For bonus points, they're both white and black.
* GreenThumb: His curse lets him grow thorns, a monstrous flower creature, and giant rose-shaped bombs. In his Etherious Form, he can create a massive tree branch and use it like a gigantic BatteringRam.
* HumansAreInsects: While other demons purport to share this view of humans, Mard Geer goes the extra mile by punishing Kyôka for amusing herself with her ColdBloodedTorture of Erza, as it means she is willing to stoop so low as to play with insects.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: He doesn't fight seriously until he puts the Book of E.N.D. down to fight Natsu and the Twin Dragons. From that point on, he reveals he had been doing a lot more than just limiting himself to the use of one hand.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Gray ultimately beats him by firing an arrow of Devil Slayer ice through his chest. This doesn't kill him, though it does leave him down for the count before Zeref finishes him off.
* JustToyingWithThem: He spends the entire fight against Sting and Rogue belittling them as the puny humans he sees them as without even moving in for the kill yet, while they are unable to even scratch him. Sting actually calls him out on this, and demands that Mard Geer fight them seriously.
* KilledOffForReal: Zeref kills him by turning him back into a book and burning it.
* KnightOfCerebus: As the de facto leader of Tartaros and by his own actions on-screen, he is single-handedly responsible for taking this series head-first into previously unseen levels of DarkerAndEdgier territory.
* LackOfEmpathy: Humans are lower than insects to him, and he tortures Kyôka for what he perceives to be too much empathy for humans because she values them as playthings. He also shows no concern for Tartaros's own soldiers when he transforms their fortress into its true form to absorb the heroes, dismissing them as a sacrifice.
* LaserGuidedKarma: He tries to have Minerva killed off after finding her no longer useful to him. Later, he is killed off by Zeref when he finds himself in the same position with the Face plan's failure.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Which he keeps in a ponytail.
* MacGuffinGuardian: He never puts the Book of E.N.D. down until he decides to fight with all he has. Other immortal characters note that he has been holding that book for eons.
* MeaningfulName: A "mard geer" is a type of pole arm originating from the Indian subcontinent. The other part of his name is actually the name of the guild, which is a hint he made it himself and used E.N.D as a pillar for the demons to support it.
* NoSell: He blocks Sting's White Dragon's Roar using only one finger. Likewise, he blocks Shadow Dragon's Slash with the palm of his hand. When he finally gets angry, he stops holding back and blocks everything Natsu, Sting, and Rogue throw at him, capping off with him catching Sting and Rogue's Holy Shadow Dragon's Flash Fang with both hands to negate it before getting smashed in the back of the head with Natsu's Lightning Flame Dragon's Firing Hammer only to just stumble slightly before batting Natsu away. Only Gray's Ice Demon Slayer Magic and Natsu's Dragon Force consistently hurt him, and the latter didn't leave visible injury.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Mard Geer was perfectly content to chill on his throne while Fairy Tail laid siege to Cube and even defeat some of the Nine Demon Gates. He only gets up when he's directly challenged, although he's justified in that he could activate Algeria at any time to swallow them up, so he didn't need to move to deal with them. Lucy escaping it was pointed out as a stroke of very good luck, and once the Celestial Spirit King shows up to trash Cube, people just keep running up to him to keep fighting.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Judging from his equal power with the Celestial Spirit King and his fights with Natsu, Gray, Sting and Rogue, there is little doubt he can use his skills to exterminate entire populations alone.
* PetalPower: He can create rose petals out of curse power that create a giant explosion.
* PosthumousVillainVictory: While he died far from the prideful demon he started as, his overriding dream of seeing to Zeref's death would be fulfilled by the end of the series, ironically thanks in part to one of the very wizards who stopped his plan and was actually the very demon he sought to "awaken" to help him kill Zeref in the first place.
* PowerMakesYourVoiceDeep: Creator/ToshiyukiMorikawa gives Mard Geer a deep tone of voice, as does Creator/VicMignogna when transforming into his Etherious Form.
* PsychoticSmirk: Pretty much his default expression. It gets all the more psychotic when he expresses TranquilFury.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: As the de facto leader of Tartaros, he is also the strongest member of the guild, if not all of Zeref's demons apart from E.N.D., whom Mard Geer merely parades as guild master to command his subordinates' respect.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Looks to be in his twenties or early thirties at the latest, yet according to the Celestial Spirit King, it's been centuries since they last saw each other.
* RedBaron: "The Underworld King".
* TheRival: He has one of sorts in the Celestial Spirit King. Noticeably, compared to the dismissive tone he takes with most humans, he has far more respect in his tone and words to the King.
* SatanicArchetype: His Etherious Form, complete with wings, horns, and a tail. According to him, it's why he's called "Underworld King", as he is the "Absolute Demon".
* SelfFulfillingProphecy: He believes that emotions, especially anger, dull one's thoughts and make one take uncharacteristic actions. After his Memento Mori curse fails and Natsu gives him a brief Dragon Force-induced beatdown, he's so furious at Natsu that he fails to notice Gray getting back up and preparing to shoot him until it's too late.
* SlasherSmile: Once he actually gets angry, complete with WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises.
* SlouchOfVillainy: His debut has him doing this while holding E.N.D's Book of Zeref under his arm. He spends the latter half of his fight with the three Dragonslayers settling back onto his throne while unleashing his full power.
* SomethingAboutARose: He's a hardcore PrettyBoy, and his main weapons are a spam of thorny vines. Bonus points for even referring to Cube as "his garden".
* TheStoic: The Celestial Spirit King showing up and bringing down Pluto's Grim didn't even faze him. He even casually greets the Spirit King like an old acquaintance. Of course, that facade cracks to show him being NotSoStoic the longer Fairy Tail simply refuses to die.
* SuperFunHappyThingOfDoom: Alegria ("Joy" in Spanish) transforms Cube into a raging monster while assimilating both enemy and ally into the walls. According to Silver, the victims are supposed to be happy that they're becoming one with the beast.
* SuperToughness: He straight-up tanks several powerful attacks, including two finishing moves from Natsu that barely even manage to stagger him, with no visible damage afterward. Even Natsu's Dragon Force barely chips at him, to the point that being hit with Natsu's Hidden Fire Form: Flame Lotus Phoenix Sword (the very same move that took down Master Zero back in the Nirvana Arc) and sent flying through and shattering multiple boulders only brings his rage to the boiling point. They only finally manage a grievous blow when Mard Geer is distracted trying to kill Natsu during said rage-induced breakdown, allowing Gray to hit him with an Ice Demon Slayer arrow straight through his chest, and even that doesn't kill him. It takes Zeref reverting him to his book form and burning it to finally finish him off.
* TakenForGranite: The Celestial Spirit King's Galaxia Blade turns Mard Geer into stone, though both of them realize it's only a temporary solution that slows him down, since Mard Geer breaks out rather quickly.
* Telepathy: He has the power to hijack Warren's telepathic link to deliver a message to Fairy Tail.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Always refers to himself as "Mard Geer" in Japanese, making him seem even more incredibly arrogant.
* TooManyBelts: On his pants, including on his ankles.
* TsurimeEyes: And they're squinty.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: He is rather shocked to see Natsu isn't as much of a pushover as Sting and Rogue had been. Then again, he isn't too impressed from his very brief round with Erza, either, so up until this point, he didn't have much of a reason to expect a whole lot from any of the humans.
* UnholyNuke: His ultimate curse, "Memento Mori". Anything caught in its blast radius vanishes entirely.
* VillainousBreakdown: When his ultimate curse "Memento Mori" is nullified by Gray, he becomes enraged; even when he told Natsu and the Twin Dragons that he was feeling fury, he still had his PsychoticSmirk, but not at this point. After taking a beating from Natsu's Dragon Force, he completely loses what vestiges of sanity he had left. And just when he thinks he's about to live long enough to see his Face plan come to fruition, the dragons return and rip his remaining hopes to shreds. When Zeref finds him, he's a trembling, fearful wreck of a once proud demon.
* WorldsStrongestMan: He’s the strongest demon in the Tartaros guild second only to E.N.D. in power and his Curse power is so immense, it was enough to scar Kyôka. Mard Geer is also strong enough to fight evenly with the Celestial Spirit King, who’s stated to be the strongest Celestial Spirit. During the battle between Fairy Tail and Tartaros he delivers a CurbStompBattle to the Dragon Slayers Sting and Rogue by toying with them and wasn’t taking them seriously, then goes on fight Natsu, Sting and Rogue all at once while only being slightly more serious. In his Etherious form, he was able to contend with Natsu and Gray at teh same time, being able to shrug off hits from Natsu's Dragon Force and even resist blows from Gray's Demon Slayer Magic, which should normally hit demons for a lot of damage, and his most powerful Curse, Memento Mori, was powerful enough to destroy everything in its wake, with it even being strong enough to destroy immortal beings like Zeref himself.
* WorthyOpponent: He is unfailingly polite to the Celestial Spirit King, and even compliments him mid-combat.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Not only does his plan to reawaken E.N.D. completely fall through, but his so-called ultimate curse doesn't even have any effect on a demonized Gray. It's for these reasons that Zeref decides he never stood a chance to fulfill his purpose and kills him.
* YouWontLikeMeWhenImAngry: After he starts taking Natsu more seriously and is faced with three Dragon Slayers in combat, he shows us that he's NotSoStoic after all and unleashes an unsettling SlasherSmile for the history books.

!!Membership
!!!Nine Demon Gates

The strongest demons of Tartaros besides E.N.D and Mard Geer. Each member holds a unique kind of curse or magical power that gives each of them the destructive power of an entire army.

* TheDreaded: They are widely respected by their subordinates, as well as feared even by other dark guilds across the continent for a valid reason. Jackal alone has proved able to exterminate most of the members of the Magic Council and raze the entire base with ease, not to mention the scale and strength of Silver's power that allows him just as easily to freeze an entire village of giants, including their Eternal Flame, almost by mistake.
* KnightOfCerebus: Compared to previous QuirkyMinibossSquad characters in the series, these guys can be downright terrifying, and all of them have kicked Fairy Tail members' asses at least once.
* OneManArmy: According to Franmalth, Zeref created them to match the strength of an entire country's military force.
* OneWingedAngel: A good number of them have an Etherious Form in where they take on more demonic appearances and drastically boost the effects of their curse powers. The only ones who don't have (or at least never resort to using) such forms are Franmalth (who instead uses the strongest soul in his possession to transform for a power-up), Keyes, and Silver (who isn't a demon to begin with, though Kyôka's brief comments and the fact Gray is able to tap into his Demon Slayer Magic to manifest black markings over his body and greater power implies Silver has a similar power-up state).
* QuirkyMinibossSquad: They are on a much different level to other squads being rather scary in comparison.
* RedBaron: All of them except Jackal had a certain kind of nickname.
* TragicDream: In a sense, their desire to be reunited with Zeref. Only Mard Geer and E.N.D. seem to be aware of the true reason why Zeref created them, meaning that even if they had won, they would never get the HappilyEverAfter they want with their creator.
* TwoGirlsToATeam: Kyôka and Seilah are the only female members of the Demon Gates.
* UndyingLoyalty: All of them hold this for Zeref, believing it to be their life's goal to reunite with him. Only Silver, a reanimated human and pawn of the guild, has no such notions.
* UnwittingPawn: Unlike Mard Geer, none of them seem to realize that Zeref created them as a means of killing himself. Thus, Mard Geer easily manipulates them into helping him form the guild to further his own plans of killing Zeref himself, leading them under the false pretense that they will finally be able to meet their creator.

The leader of the Nine Demon Gates, and a devout fanatic of Zeref who finds no greater pleasure than torturing humans. She can use her Strength Enhancement curse to enhance any target's strength and physical sensations, particularly their sense of pain, well beyond their natural limits.
----
* AgonyBeam: She can heighten her victims' sense of pain, making it so that even the softest puff of air can cause total agony. It's bad enough to break Erza, who could earlier withstand the activation of her Second Origin as if it were nothing while everyone else writhed and screamed in anguish.
* TheAce: Next to Mard Geer, she is the only one who is capable of using both curses and magic. She is also the only one of her companions who is able to use more than one curse (not to mention that, like Franmalth, she is able to absorb new kinds of powers from others). It is not by chance that she is considered the strongest of the nine.
* AltoVillainess: Both Creator/AiKayano and Janelle Lutz provide a deep, creepy voice for Kyôka, who's an efficient fighter and TortureTechnician.
* AntagonistAbilities: The ability to increase the sense of pain of own enemies to infinitely is a power so overwhelmingly powerful to which call it one of the most coveted awards in the SuperpowerLottery is pure euphemism.
* BackFromTheDead: Trope. A Historia of her is created by Neinhart in the Alvarez Empire arc, and she gangs up on Erza together with Azuma and Ikaruga.
* TheBaroness: Her sadistic extermination of Succubus Eye causes Minerva, the previous queen of this trope, to quiver with fear. She also exhibits several other Dominatrix tendencies such as her ColdBloodedTorture of Erza and her implications in bed with Seilah.
* BullyingADragon: Erza doesn't take kindly to all that ColdBloodedTorture she subjected her to.
* CharacterDeath: She gets stabbed by Minerva with Erza's sword in a vain attempt to stop her from activating Face, which would have killed her anyway.
* ClothingDamage: As a result of Mard Geer's torture, her LeotardOfPower snaps off and her helmet and mask cracks, leaving her in a Stripperific outfit.
* ColdBloodedTorture: She does this to Erza, ranging from flogging to ElectricTorture, all amplified by her AgonyBeam. She later gets this turned on her when Mard Geer ties her up with thorny vines as punishment for taking pleasure in torturing Erza, seeing this as a sign that she, in a warped way, actually likes humans.
* CoolMask: She wears a GemEncrusted helmet, which eventually cracks off during her ColdBloodedTorture at the hands of Mard Geer.
* CuteMonsterGirl: As one of the more human-looking demons, with only her bird-like hands and feet marking her as such, she proves to be quite attractive once her mask comes off.
* DarkActionGirl: She's able to match Erza, the series' prime example of an ActionGirl, blow for blow.
* DeathIsTheOnlyOption: She fuses herself with Face's activation lacrima, thus using it to accelerate Face's activation due to Acnologia's unfortunately-timed arrival. This, however, would ultimately result in her death even if she survived Erza's battle.
* DidTheyOrDidntThey: She tells Seilah she's going to "take care of her", and in a later scene, Seilah is shown in bed, with her MinidressOfPower replaced with a ModestyBedsheet, smiling.
* TheDragon: To Mard Geer (acting as DragonInChief to E.N.D.), since she's the leader of Tartaros' elite squad.
* EmeraldPower: Her Curse aura is green, and is the leader of the Demon Gates, with all the power that implies.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: As horrifically sadistic as she is, her affection for Seilah is genuine. When Seilah lies beaten and all her other comrades have fallen, she tenderly absorbs Seilah's soul and curse power and promises to avenge her.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Mard Geer trapping all of their soldiers in Alegria along with Fairy Tail is too much even for her, which is ironic given how she did almost the exact same thing to Succubus Eye.
* ForTheEvulz: Kyôka seems happy that Erza can't or won't tell her anything about Jellal since it means she can keep torturing her. To put it further, she later states outright that she could have just used Seilah's power to pull the information out of Erza, but didn't want to because Sadist there's no fun in that.
* GatheringSteam: In her Etherious Form, she not only gains a general power boost, but her Curse is enhanced to the point she can gradually boost her already considerable power ad infinitum. The only reason this doesn't become a problem is because she's already fused herself to Face's activation lacrima to speed up the countdown so she doesn't have long to live anyways, instead having her serve as a ThresholdGuardian the heroes can't avoid fighting.
* HairSubstituteFeature: Her CoolMask looks vaguely like a bird's head, with the mask's hair resembling wings.
* HarpingOnAboutHarpies: Her CoolMask looks vaguely like a bird's head, her hair resembles a pair of wings, and she has talons for hands and feet. Her Etherious Form also adds feathers on her back and horns.
* HartmanHips: She has very shapely hips and thighs, and doesn't mind wearing clothing that shows them off. She also has big breasts, but given that almost all girls in this verse have that, hers don't stand out nearly as much in comparison.
* HornedHumanoid: She gains two long horns up the sides of her head in her Etherious Form.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Minerva runs her through with Erza's sword to finish her off, though she only smiles as Face's activation still succeeds.
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: Her extremely suggestive battle dialogue with Erza only solidifies her PsychoLesbian image.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Captures and tortures Erza to obtain information while accusing her of things that are patently untrue. Mard Geer does much the same to her when she reports to him.
* LeotardOfPower: And a very revealing one at that. It's later replaced by an even more Stripperific outfit, complete with exposed midriffs and even more NavelDeepNeckline, after her old outfit is broken off by Mard Geer's torture.
* MagicEnhancement: Kyôka uses a brutal version of this. If the people she casts her enhancement curse on have the right fortitude, they'll become stronger than they can imagine. If they aren't, they're turned into paper dolls. She can also increase her own power gradually and ad infinitum while in her Etherious Form.
* MeaningfulName: Her name literally means "to strengthen" in Japanese, which is her curse power.
* MsFanservice: A candidate for the best villainous example in the series, with her virtually non-existent clothing and frequent butt-shots making all previous examples look like TheIngenue in comparison.
* NavelDeepNeckline: Virtually her entire chest is bare. Her second outfit is full-blown VaporWear. And then she goes into her Etherious Form, which sees her wearing even less.
* NoSell: Being slammed through Cube so hard she comes out the other side at the point of a giant lance does nothing to her.
* NotAfraidToDie: According to what Mard Geer told her, all demons return to Zeref once their duty in life has been fulfilled, so she yearns for death to reunite with him. However, she does hesitate momentarily when Mard Geer orders her to merge with Face's control lacrima to speed up the detonation, which would kill her.
* PointyEars: They only become visible when her helmet cracks off.
* PowerIncontinence: When using her enhancement curse on Erza in her Etherious Form, she loses control and casts it on all the battle's onlookers as well, though not to the same intensity.
* PsychoLesbian: She's all but stated to be in a romantic relationship with Seilah. She also gets quite a bit too suggestive for comfort while she's torturing Erza.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Her eyes and outfit are purple, and she stands as the most powerful member of the Nine Demon Gates who comes close to killing Erza on more than one occasion.
* RedBaron: "Goddess of the Slave Planet Kyoka".
* Sadist: She takes absolute pleasure in torturing humans, particularly Erza. Mard Geer actually disapproves of this, since it means that Kyôka doesn't truly consider them as lower than insects like her kind is supposed to.
* SenselessSacrifice: She forfeits her own life in order to activate Face, thereby unsealing the Book of E.N.D. and taking out Acnologia in one fell swoop...only for that to be completely rendered moot by the timely arrival of the dragons, who destroy all of the Face bombs across the continent. On top of that, it turns out that Face was a completely unnecessary step in awakening E.N.D. to begin with.
* ShutUpKirk: Dismisses Erza's criticism of the demons' BlindObedience to Zeref without even considering thinking for themselves, stating that a human "could never understand."
* SlasherSmile: She flashes one to show how much she enjoys testing (i.e., torturing) potential recruits and prisoners of war.
* StatuesqueStunner: The scenes of her torturing Erza show that she's a head taller.
* Stripperific: About the only part of her body still left to the imagination is her face before her mask is destroyed.
* ThirdPersonPerson: An odd case in Japanese where she refers to herself with the pronoun "konata", which is usually used to describe "this/that person", and is translated as "this one" in the official English manga. Averted in the English dub, however.
* ThongOfShielding: All three outfits she goes through seem tailored to reveal as much of her butt as possible.
* ToThePain: Once she has Erza on her knees during their fight, she removes each of her senses one by one, minus her sense of pain, which has been amplified so much that even the softest breeze causes her to writhe in agony. She then declares that Erza will spend the rest of her life as Mard Geer's puppet in this hellish state. In a BadassBoast, Erza scoffs at the idea of this being called "pain" and continues the fight anyway.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Zeref, but for a different reason than any of the previous Zeref fanatics in the series. As a demon, she and the other demons see Zeref, their creator, almost as a father figure. Kyôka in particular claims that everything Tartaros does is for him alone, and even says that they are working so that they can curry his favor enough to rejoin him at his side.
* VillainousBreakdown: When Erza suddenly starts overpowering her despite her strength growing every second while Erza has no way to sense the world other than a maximized sense of pain, she drops all attempts to flirt with Erza in her own sadistic way, and begins attacking out of pure rage.
* WolverineClaws: Her fingers can extend into long, whiplike appendages. They're also pointed at the end, perfect for flogging and impalement.

Gray's dead father, who was reanimated by Keyes and inducted into Tartaros under the masquerade of Deliora, the Etherious who killed him. Fueled by hatred towards Zeref's demons for taking his family from him, Silver became a powerful Ice Demon Slayer with the express purpose of destroying Tartaros from the inside. Upon discovering his son's survival, however, Silver loses his will to live and changes his objective to making sure Gray puts him out of his misery, no matter what it takes.
----
* AffablyEvil: He's a pretty nice guy... just don't piss him off, or he'll freeze you solid before you can blink.
* AndYourLittleDogToo: During his fight with Gray, Silver promises that once he's done with him, he'd go after Lyon next, and after that, the rest of Fairy Tail. The fact that he was bluffing didn't exactly make this threat any better, which Silver himself admits.
* ArchEnemy: He appears to be Gray's, claiming to have learned Ice Demon Slayer magic to fight him. Subverted when he reveals that claiming to be Deliora was a bluff to get Gray to kill him.
* ArmoredVillainsUnarmoredHeroes: As an antagonist of Tartaros, Silver is armored up like a knight while his son, one of the main protagonists, fights bare-chested most of the time.
* BadassCape: Because cool armor just isn't enough for this guy.
* BaritoneOfStrength: He has this thanks to Creator/KenjiroTsuda and Creator/MatthewMercer.
* BerserkButton: Mentioning Gray's "disgusting name" in front of him causes his cordial nature to vanish. It's actually an act because he knew Mard Geer was watching.
* ChekhovsGunman: Subverted. He claims to be Deliora; the demon responsible for killing Gray's parents, Ur using Iced Shell, and just about everything else wrong with Gray's life; possessing the body of Silver Fullbuster, Gray's father. In truth, he's actually Silver's corpse reanimated by Keyes.
* CurbStompBattle: This is pretty much what he does.
** He single-handedly froze the spirit of a fire dragon and an entire village of giants with what appears to be minimal effort.
** He froze Natsu solid with one wave of his hand. Natsu became another of Tartaros' prisoners for his trouble.
** His fight with Gray consisted of him nullifying everything Gray tried. Ice Make spells? He shrugs them off or flat-out eats them. Converting the rubble around the battlefield into ammunition to fire at him with ice cannons? Freeze over the battlefield to deny him that advantage. Gray channeling and hitting him with his own DemonSlaying ice now coating the battlefield? It only does minor damage because he's not actually a demon in the first place. It's ultimately revealed he only lost because he wanted Gray to win.
* DarkLordOnLifeSupport: He's an antagonist of Tartaros who's kept alive by Keyes' magic that reanimated him and if Keyes should die, Silver will also go.
* DeathSeeker: After learning his son survived Deliora's attack, he realizes all of the terrible acts he'd committed and wishes to be put out of his misery. To that end, he poses as Deliora to get Gray angry enough to kill him; even when Gray figures the truth out, Silver resorts to pointing himself out as an enemy of Fairy Tail to justify why he needs to die. When Gray still can't bring himself to do it, he telepathically requests Juvia do it instead.
* DemonicPossession: Subverted; he claimed he was Deliora possessing Silver's body. See DeathSeeker as to why.
* DemonSlaying: Demon Slayer magic. It hits for massive damage against demons, such as those from the Books of Zeref. It's no slouch against dragon spirits, either.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: He ended up doing this to Atlas Flame's spirit to a degree on the assumption he was a demon, even though the being he attacked was a dragon. Normally this wouldn't apply to a demon, but it turns out he's simply human.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He is first shown paying respects to a grave, later revealed to belong to his wife, Gray's mother Mika and Gray himself. Notably, Gray's name on the marker has be crossed out.
* EvilAllAlong: He claims that he's Deliora, which turns out to be a lie. However, Silver still fully admits that he did some pretty awful things as a member of Tartaros, and that calling him 'good' is still a stretch.
* EvilIsHammy: During TheReveal, he shows us that he can really be this when he's in full villain mode. He delivered one KickTheDog after another to Gray, all while sporting Slasher Smiles and Nightmare Faces that would have given Jackal chills. Of course, he was actually just playing up the image to get Gray mad enough.
* FamilyThemeNaming: Silver and Gray are different shades of the same color, duh.
* FangsAreEvil: His canines become quite prominent after TheReveal. He had them all along, being a Demon Slayer, but they weren't really noticeable until he's sporting Slasher Smiles and Evil Laughter.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has a noticeable scar across the upper-left side of his face. It's likely that this scar is from the wound that killed him during Deliora's rampage.
* HandsomeLech: He shamelessly flirts with Kyôka. She seems more amused by it than anything.
* HarmlessFreezing: Zigzagged. His Ice Demon Slayer Magic is a KryptoniteFactor for demons, and Atlas Flame's spirit had lost most of its memories and was on the verge of fading after being trapped in the ice for so long though TheReveal about Acnologia draining the souls of dragons 400 years ago implies he was already on his last legs long before that, but the giants themselves were completely unharmed after being thawed out. The same thing happened to Natsu after he had the misfortune of pressing Silver's BerserkButton, appearing just fine after being completely encased in ice (though the later reveal about him not really being evil implies he did it to keep up appearances to the guild and held back), so his frozen non-demon victims seem to be completely unharmed after thawing out.
* HeelRealization: Despite becoming a corpse, he was more than content to take down the demons of Zeref on the inside until seeing Gray in the GMG.
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: Despite being in a genocidal guild full of demons, he actually hunts demons and apparently consumes their souls. When he interrupts Franmalth's battle with Natsu, the former looks absolutely terrified of him. That said, Atlas Flame actually referred to him as a human when describing the person who froze the village. Juvia lampshades how weird it is for a demon who knows Demon Slaying magic to join a guild full of demons. Keyes suggests that it was possible that Mard Geer accepted Silver into the Nine Demon Gates in order to act as a deterrent to keep the other Gates in line; but admitted that it ultimately didn't matter, since Silver was more than powerful enough to qualify for the position regardless of what kind of magic he used. Subverted when it's revealed that Silver isn't really a demon.
* AnIcePerson: A proficient user in Ice Demon Slayer Magic and one of the most powerful ice user we have seen in the series; his Ice Demon Slayer powers allow him to flash-freeze an entire village in an instant. Short of Invel Yura, one of the Spriggan Twelve who's head and shoulders above both of them, he may very well be the only ice wizard in the series to rival, if not surpass Ur.
* ItsPersonal: He appears to hold a serious grudge against Gray, which seems quite justified when he tells Gray he's actually Deliora, and thus has it out for all of Ur's students. This, however, is a lie to get Gray to kill him; it's actually personal against demons in general, as he's been on a covert RoaringRampageOfRevenge against them ever since he thought Gray died.
* KickTheDog: He tells Gray he's Deliora in possession of his dad's body and gloats about wanting to kill him. This is all part of his gambit to get Gray to kill him, and he hates himself for it.
* LightIsNotGood: He is a Demon Slayer, also known as an exorcist wizard, whose magic is designed to vanquish demons. He's also a member of a dark guild made up almost entirely of demons whose stated goal is to KillAllHumans. It later turns out that he was GoodAllAlong, as Silver learned this magic and joined the guild with the noble intention of destroying it from within, though he himself states he still did some pretty terrible things as a member of Tarrtaros to keep up appearances.
* LukeIAmYourFather: Double-subverted. Gray immediately recognizes him as his father, Silver Fullbuster, but dismisses the notion because he was killed by Deliora. In response, Silver claims that he is Deliora, who possessed Silver's corpse to use as a human vessel. Not long after Gray defeats him, he clues in that Silver was faking being Deliora.
* NobleDemon: Despite being Tartaros' TokenGoodTeammate he does seem to be mostly loyal to the dark guild as a whole, as shown when he finally joins in the fight against Fairy Tail. Of course, that could just be because he was finally able to confront Gray. Seemingly subverted when he reveals he's actually Deliora, making him just as bad as his allies, but then double subverted as he was lying about being Deliora, though he fully admits that he did some pretty awful things as a member of Tartaros.
* NoSell: Being an Ice Demon Slayer, he can freely eat any form of ice magic and is otherwise hardly affected by it, which lets him smack Gray around without a care in the world. Even when Gray reverses his own ice on him, it only does minor damage despite its anti-demon properties, and that's because he's not a demon. Gray is forced to convert nearby stone rubble into ammunition for various ice cannons to do any actual damage, and ultimately is only able to put him out of the fight by throwing a large steel ball through Silver's chest.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: He refuses to let any of the other Nine Gates try to fight Gray, grabbing the kid and promptly getting both of them far away from the battlefield everyone else is on. Although it turns out it wasn't so much because he wanted to be the one to defeat Gray as he wanted Gray to beat him so he could pass on his Demon Slayer Magic and the best chance Gray would have of taking on Mard Geer.
* PetTheDog: After Natsu and Lisanna are subjected to a ShamefulStrip and thrown into a cell together, he visits their cell and gives Lisanna a blanket to cover herself with.
* PurpleIsPowerful: His Ice Devil Slayer Magic has a purple aura in contrast to Gray's blue one, and their confrontation shows his power exceeds that of his sons.
* RedBaron: "Absolute Zerø Silver."
* TheReveal: Threefold: He's Silver Fullbuster, Gray's dad. Or rather, he's actually Deliora in possession of his body. Then it's revealed that he really is Gray's dad, or rather his reanimated corpse controlled by Keyes.
* SingleStrokeBattle: Freezes Natsu solid with one wave of his hand.
* SpannerInTheWorks: He let Happy escape after capturing Natsu, leaking the nature of their base, and letting Fairy Tail pinpoint their exact location. He also may have dropped the sword for Natsu to use to escape his cell. Franmalth actually comments on this.
* SurvivorGuilt: His motivation for a covert RoaringRampageOfRevenge against Zeref's demons, up until he realized Gray was alive, resulting in a HeelRealization.
* TokenGoodTeammate: He hunts demons, and when the others all talk about their plan and how the current destruction they've caused is just the start, he's noticeably silent and going by his expression, he's less than thrilled. While he did freeze the Sun Village, he did it because he thought the Eternal Flame was a demon, and actually thanks Natsu for thawing it out.
* TorsoWithAView: Gray beats him by launching a steel ball through his chest, leaving a large hole.
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: If your first thought upon looking at his picture above was "Wow, that guy looks like he could be Gray's dad!" you're right. It's especially noticeable in Gray's Avatar get-up.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Kyôka comments on him showing up in his "human form", implying his current, humanoid appearance isn't his true one. It's later subverted; he has no demon form, as he's not a demon. That said, given Gray is able to summon black markings when overusing his Demon Slayer Magic, it implies Silver has a similar ability at his disposal.
%%* WalkingSpoiler: And not just for the reason fans thought.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Averted. When Gray uses his own anti-demon magic to blast him, he tanks it and suffers only minor wounds because he's not a demon; he's the reanimated corpse of a human.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Ultimately revealed to be this. While he intended to destroy Tartaros from the inside, including E.N.D, he still assisted Tartaros in some of their more horrible actions like the Face Project.
* WhamLine: "My name is Deliora! Surely you haven't forgotten me, have you, Gray!?"
** "You're right I was once your dad, but I'm no longer a human or a demon...I am a corpse."

A psychotic demon whose explosive curse can turn anything he touches into a bomb. True to his name, his actual form is a giant canine monster.
----
* AxCrazy: He's not much different from Grimoire Heart's Zancrow in this regard, cackling at the sight of the destruction and mayhem he causes.
* ClippedWingAngel: Once Natsu figures out how to eat Jackal's explosions without getting hurt, Jackal resorts to his Etherious Form to take him down through brute force. Too bad for him, Natsu is more than used to dealing with physical fighters.
* CollisionDamage: A particularly nasty side-effect of his powers is that anything that touches his skin directly spontaneously explodes. Natsu learns this the hard way when he gives Jackal a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown.
* DeathIsCheap: Unlike Tempester, who loses his memories whenever he is resurrected, Jackal doesn't suffer any negative consequences whatsoever, except that he just doesn't learn from his previous experience.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Mocks his target, Michello, for running away out of fear for his own life, leaving his granddaughter behind.
* EvilLaugh: "Kuhahaha!"
* ExplainingYourPowerToTheEnemy: He has a bad case of this, but he's confident he can get away with it since even touching him can cause his enemy to explode. Unfortunately for him, this lets Natsu figure out a trick to avoiding the damage.
* FangsAreEvil: Goes with his LittleBitBeastly appearance. His teeth look like that of a canine.
* ForTheEvulz: Outright states to Lucy that he's not really looking to gain anything, and that he just sees humans as playthings.
* HavingABlast: His curse allows him to blow up anything he sees and touches.
* HellishPupils: His eyes make him look almost catlike in appearance, which is odd considering that jackals are canines.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: His hair covers an entire half of his face. When he goes OneWingedAngel and the bangs vanish, the covered eye is shown to have a diagonal scar across it and being completely blood-red to match his other completely white eye.
* KilledOffForReal: If getting blasted by Lucy's Urano Metoria once Hell's Core was taken out of commission didn't kill him and assuming Mirajane didn't absorb him into her Satan Soul: Algeria, it was certainly Zeref's death at the end of the series.
* LawOfDisproportionateResponse: Torafuzar telling him to stop toying with Lucy and just kill her? He gets a little angry but nothing comes out of it. Lummy supporting the torture and suggesting blowing up Lucy's breasts? He blows her to pieces.
* LightningBruiser: His Etherious Form is bigger, yes, but it is also swift and packs a wallop.
* LittleBitBeastly: His "human" form has pointed ears, a furry yellow tail, and a nose just like an actual jackal.
* MadBomber: Aside from blowing up the Magic Council's headquarters, he destroys random buildings during his fight with Natsu, Lucy, and Wendy pretty much because he could.
* OffingTheAnnoyance: He expresses great annoyance towards Lummy's lack of personal space the moment he comes out of Hell's Core. Eventually, he just decides to blow her up.
* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: Jackal's Etherious Form is a giant lycanthrope, and he can assume it through VoluntaryShapeshifting.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: His curse causes spontaneous explosions of all sizes and intensities. He can kill dozens of people and demolish an entire building effortlessly.
* RevengeByProxy: With Natsu and Happy falling victim to Alegria, he decides he wants to take out his revenge on Lucy instead.
* SadisticChoice: He just loves giving these to his victims. First, he gives Michello a choice between both he and his granddaughter dying, or him giving him--and by extension, Tartaros--the location of a certain MacGuffin he's looking for, in which case he would live...but his granddaughter would still die. Later, he presents Lucy with a choice between saving Michello or a PregnantHostage. Lucy is spared from making this choice by Natsu.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: His scarf is a staple of his appearance, keeping it even when he enters his Etherious Form. He gets an even longer one after being resurrected by Lummy.
* SlasherSmile: Massacres countless innocents, blows up a village, and forces more than one SadisticChoice on others while sporting one of these.
* TheSociopath: He enjoys blowing things up, and he impulsively torments his opponents at any opportunity, despite being criticized by his comrades for wasting time. Said comrades are threatened with an explosive death simply for not allowing him to indulge himself.
* TakingYouWithMe: As with Tempester, once his defeat seems inevitable, he tries to blow up the town with Natsu's group still in it. It's thwarted when Happy flies him above the city.
* TooDumbToLive: He refuses to listen to Torafuzar's advice to kill Lucy quickly when she appears to be beaten. Lucy gets a PowerUp and blasts him with Urano Metoria shortly after.
* UnskilledButStrong: Jackal has one of the most destructive Curses among the Gates, to the point making physical contact with him will cause an explosion, but in return he notably never shows much skill at hand-to-hand and his strategy defaults to "blow it up" even if he can get creative how he blows things up, such as exploding enemy offensive magic spells. When Natsu reveals he can neutralize the explosions, Jackal's response is to unleash his Etherious Form and try to savagely beat him to death, and when that fails he goes right for a SuicideAttack. When Lucy similarly neutralizes his explosions with her newly-gained Star Dress: Aquarius, Jackal is left just desperately throwing more explosions at her before she takes him down.
* VillainBall: He's so focused on trying to torture Lucy for his previous loss instead of outright killing her that it gives her time to summon Aquarius, who sacrifices herself to summon the Spirit King and destroy Tartaros' home base.
* VillainousBreakdown: When he finds that a "puny human" like Natsu can actually go toe to toe with him. Even moreso when his TakingYouWithMe plan fails. But his biggest is seeing Lucy NoSell his Curse despite having seconds before been lying on the ground crying her eyes out from having sacrificed Aquarius's Golden Key, at which point he can only keep desperately tossing explosions at her to no effect before she nukes him with Urano Metoria.
* WouldHitAGirl: He threatens the lives of Lucy, Michello's granddaughter, and a PregnantHostage. And that's to say nothing of how he later kills Lummy just for annoying him, and later blowing up one of Lucy's legs.

A beast-like demon who can call forth natural disasters and calamities with a simple flick of his tongue. He has died and come back more often than any of his fellow Etherious, and as a side effect, his memory is so foggy that he can hardly recall his own name.
----
%%* AmbiguouslyBrown: His second body.
* AdaptationalBadass: The anime version of the Tartaros arc gives him much more variety in his curses along with a second battle with Laxus. While Laxus looks impressive by standing his ground while poisoned Tempester proves to be no pushover either.
* BadassBoast: Gives on to the thunder tribe as he prepares to kill his target.
-->"I have no name I herald calamity for humanity. The gate to the underworld is open! We are delivering mankind's rightful punishment! Fall to hell!"
* BeardOfEvil: Sports a chin curtain in his first body and in his Etherious form.
* BeastMan: His original appearance and Etherious form is a hulking man with a lion-like face and mane. Lummy doesn't like this, so when he needs to be resurrected, she turns him into a full-on dark-skinned blond PrettyBoy in his base form.
* BilingualBonus: The "Tempesta" name is Catalan and Italian for storm.
%%* BodyBackUpDrive: And it looks nothing like the first body we see him in.
* BlowYouAway: While he has many calamities at his disposal and is happy to use them, wind based ones seem to be his favorite, whether it's summoning tornadoes or surrounding his lower body to move around faster or coating his fists with them to boost his punching power.
* BondVillainStupidity: In the anime, when he cornered Laxus and Gajeel on, he, rather than just killing them, explains his title of 'Immortal' and even tells how they can defeat him, apparently confident that in their current weakened states they won't be able to muster enough power to do the job. In fairness, he's right...but then Laxus reveals that the various puddles of Torafuzar's Tenchi Kaimei all over the battlefield have been electrified over the course of their battle, and he then proceeds to unleash one final Lightning Dragon's Roar at the ground that uses the black water as a conductor and amplifier to unleash the required finishing blow.
* TheBrute: Is one of the more physically imposing members of the Demon Gates, has an obviously destructive curse power, and his approach to combat tends to be fairly straightforward.
* TheCoatsAreOff: He rips his tattered coat to shreds after Laxus gets the drop on him.
* CurbStompBattle: The Raijin Tribe barely have time to attack him when he makes his appearance, and he blows them away without any trouble. This is reversed on him when Laxus beats him without even trying, though Round Two in the anime puts them both on more equal footing due to Laxus still being weakened and Tempester being in his Etherious form. Then he fought Gray which lead to a OneHitKill for Tempester.
* DidNotSeeThatComing:
** He doesn't expect someone from Fairy Tail--or indeed, any human--to be so strong, and thus doesn't fight as seriously against Laxus. He's a bit wiser the second time around, holding his own against Natsu and co. for much longer.
** He also was not expecting Gray to use the weakness of demons freezing his curse and then killing him with just one move.
** He was sure as hell not expecting Laxus to show up in the anime version getting his rematch with Tempester.
* DiesDifferentlyInAdaptation: In the manga, he fights Gray and gets killed. In the anime, he fights Laxus and after his defeat, kills himself to turn himself into toxic mist and try to kill the heroes, only for Gray for freeze the mist.
* DishingOutDirt: As seen in the anime he can also create sinkholes from the dirt with his calamity-based curse.
* ElementalPowers: His curse can make natural disasters from cyclones, downpours, firestorms, lightning strikes, and rockslides.
* ElementalPunch: One of his favorite melee moves is to coat his fist in wind to enhance its striking power.
* ExplainingYourPowersToTheEnemy: Averted, given how little Tempesta spoke (though he does explain what the Devil Particles do), and it doesn't help that his curse was one of the ones that never got named, leaving the extent of his powers vague. Later subverted as he explains the basics of his immortal body to Gajeel and Laxus which leads to his death in the anime.
* FlatCharacter: In the manga, he doesn't get much more characterization than the condescending view of humanity shared by the rest of his guild; even his powers remained poorly defined. He does get more of a chance to shine in the anime.
* IdiotHair: In his second body.
* Immortality: In the anime Tempester reveals he has been granted a large amount of curse energy through a connection with Mard Geer. Essentially he can revive himself unless he is brought down with a single powerful blow. This explains the reason he got his nickname the "Immortal" of Tartaros.
* InTheHood: He wears a hood that covers part of his face during his introduction.
* KilledOffForReal: Gray kills him with his new Ice Demon Slayer Magic and his blood is used to make an antidote for the poison. The anime version has Laxus take Gray's place, though Gray steps in to make sure Tempester can't go for one last hurrah.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: He says that he's been killed and resurrected so many times that he loses his memory every time his body reforms at Tartaros' HQ, to the point that he doesn't even remember or care about his own name. This seems to be a production defect, though, since other demons can remember their past selves perfectly fine.
* LittleBitBeastly: He seems to have fur and a animal like face, though what kind is unknown due to his Hood. Seems to be a bit Lion but its hard to tell.
%%* LongHairedPrettyBoy: His second body.
* MageKiller: Once defeated, he explodes into a cloud of toxic mist called Devil Particles that are deadly to ordinary people, particularly wizards.
* MeaningfulName: He's the guy throwing around magical tempests.
* MindOverMatter: In the anime his curse allows him to lift rocks into the air to attack people.
* NoSell: He takes a direct hit from several members of the Raijin Tribe, and barely even flinches. He can even withstand hits from Laxus in their rematch, and still come back hence his immortality.
%%* TheParalyzer: His magic seems to paralyze whoever it hits, given how the Raijin tribe was unable to move afterwards.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: With a simple blow, he whips up a huge tornado that levels Yajima's restaurant. His Devil Particles are also eerily reminiscent of a real-life chemical weapons attack, body count and collateral damage included.
* PlayingWithFire: Not only can he use fire in his calamity curse Tempester can belch it like Natsu does or cover himself in flames. Laxus calls it "lukewarm" flames.
* RedBaron: Tempester "The Immortal".
* RuleOfSexy: In-universe example; Lummy says this was her reason behind turning him into a drop-dead gorgeous dark-skinned blond (while shamelessly fawning over him).
%%* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Tempester/Tempesta.
* TakingYouWithMe:
** Subverted with his final attack. At first it looks like he's killing himself to take out Laxus, the Raijin Tribe, and Yajima, but then he reveals that he's perfectly alive and just needs to return to HQ to reform himself.
** In the anime he tries this again when his body is close to death after Laxus' final attack, noting that with Hell's Core's destruction this will be his final move regardless, but Gray freezes the particles.
* TheQuietOne: He hardly seems to speak, and when he does, his sentences consist of about three or four words total.
* VillainousLegacy: Even though he was defeated, the particles that Laxus absorbed because of his explosion still affects him one year later.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: His second body.
* TheWorfEffect: Gets beaten in less than half a chapter twice, first by Laxus, then by Gray, with his newly acquired Ice Demon Slayer Magic.

A she-demon with a penchant for literature who treats everything around her as if it were a story. Calm yet ruthless, she exerts total control over the bodies and actions of humans unfortunate enough to fall within her Macro curse.
----
* BadassBookworm: Enjoys good stories, though she finds the stories written by humans boring.
* TheBerserker: She has no conscious control of her OneWingedAngel form, replacing her usual demeanor with bestial screaming and shrieking.
* ChekhovsSkill: She states that her Macro curse can control dead bodies, though not as effectively as Keyes's Necromancy. After Keyes's death, she controls the dead Council chairman to activate Face.
* CurbStompBattle: She gives Mirajane a hard enough time as it is, but once she whips out her OneWingedAngel form, she blows Mirajane's then-ultimate Sitri form away.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Discounting Silver, Seilah is the most human-looking demon of the group, looking like a pretty young woman with horns.
* DeathGlare: Gives one to the Strauss sisters as she tells Lisanna that she'll kill Mirajane to make up for the failure and humiliation Elfman caused her.
* DemonicPossession: Inverted. By the events of the Alvarez Empire arc, Mirajane has learned to take over Seilah's body with her Satan Soul, which she does in order to save her life.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Black hair, but close enough with her eerily calm personality.
* EmotionlessGirl: She's generally a pretty quiet, reserved demon, at least until she loses her temper...
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: She has eyes on her palms in her OneWingedAngel form, which she uses to perform a KamehameHadoken.
* FemmeFatalons: Complete with nail polish. In her OneWingedAngel form, they become sharp enough to slice through flesh.
* FullFrontalAssault: Going OneWingedAngel tears off her clothing, except (initially) her detached sleeves. Little attention is drawn to her breasts, however.
* FurAndLoathing: Part of her MinidressOfPower appears to have been made from something similar to leopard skin.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Her Etherious Form has these, leaving a trail of light whenever her eyes move around.
* HeroKiller: Mirajane is one of the best wizards in Fairy Tail's roster, on par with Erza. Seilah destroys her while barely taking a scratch, and would have killed her were it not for Mirajane invoking Elfman's DynamicEntry.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Mirajane uses Seilah's own curse to puppeteer Elfman into pulling a BigDamnHeroes to strike Seilah down.
* HornedHumanoid: Aside from the markings, this is one of the only physical features she has that doesn't look entirely human.
* ImpossiblyLowNeckline: It's a mystery how her MinidressOfPower stays up.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Her defeat comes at the hands of Elfman, whom she'd previously used to try and destroy Fairy Tail.
* ManipulativeBitch: She uses Elfman's love for Lisanna to act against his own guild by forcing him to strangle his own sister, pressuring him into making a DealWithTheDevil to save her life.
* MoralityPet: Kyôka might be an extreme Sadist, but Seilah manages to bring her warmest side to the surface, and is the only one Kyôka cares about. The anime even adds a scene where Kyôka remembers Seilah's smile before Face inevitably drains all her life.
* NecessaryDrawback: When she goes OneWingedAngel, she focuses all her power on attack, weakening her control over others.
* NightOfTheLivingMooks: Played with. She openly admits that corpses are harder for her to control than living PeoplePuppets, as she demonstrates with the corpse of a freshly-slain ex-Council member.
* NoSell: On the giving and receiving end of this; Mirajane can't use Takeover on her and she can't use Macro on Mirajane, forcing the two to decide their battle on strength alone. It's later dropped entirely when Mirajane manages to absorb a fraction of her powers, which leads to her defeat. Mirajane takes it a step further when she is able to fully take over Seilah's body during the second TimeSkip.
* NotQuiteDead: Kyôka absorbing her curse power doesn't kill her as they both believe, although it brings her close to death. Mirajane saves her life by using her Takeover powers on her.
* OhCrap: To say she reacts badly to Cana saving the guild and allowing Fairy Tail to actually counter and attack is an understatement.
* OneWingedAngel: Accessed by using Macro on herself and removing her limiter. Her horns grow twice as large, she gains GlowingEyesOfDoom with ExtraEyes elsewhere on her body, including the palms of her hands, her MinidressOfPower splits into detached sleeves, and she gains even more runes on her body, including her now bare chest.
* PeoplePuppets: She can control people to do whatever she wants through her Macro curse.
* PsychoLesbian: Seems to be in a sexual relationship with Kyôka, and promises terrible vengeance against those who embarrass her in front of Kyôka.
* PsychoticSmirk: Flashes this right before the FantasticNuke lacrima she ordered Elfman to plant in Fairy Tail's headquarters detonates.
* RedBaron: "Goddess of the Chill Moon Seliah".
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Despite her seemingly demure nature, her eyes are an early indicator of how dangerous this demon really is.
* SadisticChoice: She makes Elfman choose between letting Lisanna die by his own hand and obliterating the rest of his guild so his sister can live.
* SoleSurvivor: For a given value of "survivor", but Mirajane uses her Take Over on her after her defeat and near-death to make her one of Satan Souls, and Mira describes it as "saving" her life. In which case, this technically makes Seilah the only surviving member of the Nine Demon Gates after Zeref's death at the end of the original manga.
* TheStoic: She shows no expression, not even sadistic glee, as she forces Elfman to strangle his sister Lisanna. When her plan to destroy Fairy Tail goes up in smoke, however, this slowly but surely ceases to apply.
* TattooedCrook: She has markings on her forehead and shoulders, though they appear more to be runes of some kind, rather than tattoos.
* ThrowTheBookAtThem: Is shown doing this to Mirajane, with several floating books all pelting her at once. The anime shows her summoning these books from nowhere.
* UnstoppableRage: Her OneWingedAngel form in a nutshell. Her usual cool demeanor is entirely replaced once her limiter is removed. Indeed, she goes so berserk in this form that he has to use Macro on herself just to stay focused on her target, or she'd be liable to destroy everything in sight.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: In her Etherious Form. Her combat cries sound like multiple voices screaming all at once.
* WickedCultured: Not only is she a BadassBookworm, she constantly refers to everything going on around her as if it were the plot of a novel, even going so far as to as to comment on events as if she were a literary critic.
* Yandere: Wanting to kill Lisanna in front of Mirajane just because Elfman embarrassed her in front of Kyôka clinches it.

A skeleton preacher who is obsessed with understanding the dead through research and experimentation. His Necromancer curse allows him to create and control the living dead.
----
* BackFromTheDead: Downplayed. A Historia of him is created via Juvia's memories in the Alvarez Empire arc. He's defeated alongside Zancrow by Juvia and Merudy's Unison Raid.
* BadassInANiceSuit: He wears a shirt with tie underneath his robe.
* BadassLongRobe: It goes with his BadassPreacher look.
* BadassPreacher: His clothes, staff, and tendency to speak as though he's giving a morbid religious sermon make him a great example. It's no wonder he's recognized as the Black Archbishop.
* CharacterDeath: Juvia enters his body and blows him apart from the inside out.
* DemBones: He is a demon who resembles a reanimated skeleton.
* DidntSeeThatComing: His defeat by Juvia comes after he's sure he'd torn her body apart. He didn't expect her to turn into water and destroy him from the inside.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: Accepts his end at Juvia's hand with grace and dignity, in contrast to his comrades.
* ForScience: His obsession with recreating a corpse to appear just like itself when it was alive pretty much boils down to this. Beyond that, he doesn't even care that Silver, his crowning achievement, plans to betray the guild.
* HighCollarOfDoom: Extends all the way over his head.
* Intangibility: A result of his VoluntaryShapeshifting. Gray can't even touch this guy; he just phases right through the ice. Then he makes the mistake of getting close enough to Juvia for her to enter his body and blow him up from the inside out.
* KeystoneArmy: If he is defeated, all of the corpses he reanimated will all die (again) as well. Silver informs Juvia of this, hoping that it will stop Crawford once and for all, despite knowing full well that he will also die if this happens.
* LoveIsAWeakness: He apparently believes this, and taunts Juvia by saying her love for Gray made her hesitate in killing him, making her weak. She gives him a ShutUpHannibal he won't soon forget by blowing him up from the inside, making sure it's the last thing he remembers.
* MadScientist: His obsession with recreating the perfect corpse to make it indistinguishable from when it was alive gives him this vibe.
* MagicStaff: He carries a khakkhara that can release blasts of dark energy at his enemies.
* MouthStitchedShut: While this doesn't hinder his ability to speak, it gives him a very creepy appearance.
* Necromancer: His Necromancy curse lets him bring people BackFromTheDead and control them, including Crawford and Gray's father.
* OurLichesAreDifferent: He's a demon, but has the appearance and Necromancy abilities of a lich.
* PopGoesTheHuman: Well, technically he's a skeletal demon, but in the end this is how he goes out, courtesy of Juvia.
* RedBaron: "The Black Archbishop Keyes".
* ScarySkeleton: While not the strongest member of Tartaros, he's still a skeletal necromancer with an ominous air to him and defeating him would be key to freeing Silver Fullbuster and allowing his soul to rest in peace.
* TheStoic: When confronted by Taurus and Aries' attacks, he doesn't even so much as blink (not that he could blink). His shock as Juvia enters his body and destroys him from within, on the other hand, manages to prove that he's NotSoStoic.
* StrikeMeDownWithAllOfYourHatred: He eggs Juvia on to kill him, confident that she doesn't have it in her to do it because if he goes down, so does Gray's father. Too bad for him, it doesn't work.
* SuperSpeed: He can outpace Natsu while simultaneously dodging spells cast by Juvia in his mist form.
* TakingYouWithMe: An unintentional version occurs when Juvia tears him apart from inside his body, only to be infected by Devil Particles in the process.
* WarriorPoet: Everything he says sounds like a fancy, if morbid religious sermon.
* WeakButSkilled: Silver says that as far as the Nine Demon Gates go, he's not particularly dangerous in a fight. His true talent lies in his Necromancer necromancy abilities, which alone makes him an invaluable member of the team. Furthermore, his enormous speed combined with his Intangibility intangibility made him the most difficult Tartaros demon to damage for the Fairy Tail wizards at least until Juvia deliberately let herself be absorbed by him.
* YouWillNotEvadeMe: After Wendy and Lucy try escape from him using Happy' and Charles' Max Speed, he reappears in a corridor just in front of them. However, Gray foils his stand.

A violent savage who is always itching to slaughter humans whenever he can. He uses his "Tenga Goken"Five Blades Under Heaven curse to transform his multiple arms into blades that can slice through anything.
----
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: His curse involves these, though they're not visible. He constantly claims that there's nothing in the world he can't cut, which has quite a bit of truth given he is able to literally slice through Wendy's winds and is only defeated because she makes them faster than he can cut through.
* AxCrazy: Quite eager to start slaughtering humans. His epithet "Child Slicer" doesn't help, and implies that he was the one who cut up the entire town Gray and Juvia went to. Definitely proves it during his fight with Wendy.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: In his OneWingedAngel form, his lower arms turn into black swords that he claims improves his cutting power even further.
* BackFromTheDead: Downplayed. In the Alvarez Empire arc, Neinhart creates a Historia of him that attacks Wendy, who's still weakened from her fight with [=DiMaria=]. With Carla's help, however, Wendy manages to pull herself together enough to defeat him.
* BloodKnight: Unlike Torafuzar, he states he doesn't care about demon dignity as long as he can fight something. He's downright excited when Wendy turns out to be a Dragon Slayer because he thinks it'll make this fight much more entertaining.
* TheBrute: Is the largest of the Demon Gates, and one of their most brutal members (which is a high bar to clear), showing glee at the prospect of fighting and killing Wendy.
* ChildHater: He doesn't take Wendy seriously at all, even going so far as to refer to her as "midget".
* CombatTentacles: His tentacle-like limbs can be used like this.
* DavidVersusGoliath: Is the Goliath to Wendy's David, being the large, powerful, and brutal demon fighting the much smaller GirlyBruiser. Only her unlocking Dragon Force tilts things in her favour.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: After he's killed in the explosion of Face, he pops up in Hell's Core, ready to get his revenge on that "brat" who beat him. It just so happens he showed up moments before Mirajane blew it up.
* Foil: To fellow member Torafuzar. Both are the largest members of the Nine Demon Gates, possess great physical strength at their disposal and are extremely fast despite their size, and take pride in their power. However, Ezel claims as demons they have no use for honor and dignity, while Torafuzar believes that such things are necessary to their station. Ezel is a BloodKnight who delights in watching his enemies struggle and will drag fights out if he feels he can get more entertainment out of them, while Torafuzar is a NoNonsenseNemesis who prefers to finish fights quickly and takes no pleasure out of torturing his victims.
* KickTheDog: He prepares to crush Wendy underneath his CombatTentacles until he gets the bright idea of wanting to eat Carla after she tries to save Wendy. Bad idea.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: He possesses four arms and seven tentacle legs, all of which can slice through anything.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Ezel is responsible for having Wendy go from TagAlongKid to a full-fledged Dragon Slayer after his attempt to eat Carla, prompting her to eat the air surrounding Face and unlock Dragon Force.
* OneWingedAngel: His "Slasher Form" has him gaining bigger fangs, a samuraiesque armor and huge black blades in lieu of his arms. However, it's still not enough to defeat Wendy's Dragon Force.
* RedBaron: The name "Dôjigiri", a legendary Japanese sword, references his ability to turn his arms into swords. Ironically, said sword is a demon-slaying weapon in real life.
* ShoutOut: His epithet and attacks refer to the five greatest Japanese swords: Dôjigiri, Onimaru, Juzumaru, Odenta and Mikazuki. Except for Odenta (which only appears as a move in VideoGame/FairyTail2020), all others were quoted.
* StormOfBlades: His curse involves huge, invisible Absurdly Sharp Blades that seem to extend from his hands. In his OneWingedAngel form, his hands turn into blades that improves their cutting power even more.
* SwordBeam: His curse makes him arms so sharp they can generate flying slashes of energy. His curse can even cut through one of Wendy's spells, but it was not enough to overcome her Dragon Force mode.
* TorsoWithAView: This is how his Historia is dispatched, courtesy of Wendy in Dragon Force punching a hole through through his chest with Carla's help.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: He calls Wendy a "midget" and expresses annoyance that she won't give him the fight he's craving. Oh, she gives it to him, alright.
* WouldHurtAChild: Lives up to his moniker of "Child Slicer" during his fight with Wendy.
* WreckedWeapon: In the anime, Wendy shatters one of his arm-blades before she blasts him through Face to destroy the structure's physical form.

A no-nonsense shark demon who prefers to kill his foes with efficiency rather than cruelty, unlike many of his Etherious brethren. His curse power, Tenchi Kaimei, creates a wave of poisonous black water.
----
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: Just one of his shoulder fins is enough to partially break through Loke's Regulus magic, giving him a nasty cut on his arm.
* ArtisticLicenseChemistry: The poisonous properties of his curse comes from toxic levels of carbon in the water. While carbon is indeed toxic to humans at ridiculously high levels (just like anything else, really), the amount of carbon necessary to kill a human being - even while being completely submerged in it - in five minutes or less would have to be at such high and concentrated levels in water to the point where it would no longer be a liquid.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: He has one large, razor-sharp fin attached to each elbow; they are his primary form of offense in his base form. Strangely, he loses them in his Etherious Form, leaving him to rely on simple yet powerful punches from his massive arms.
* TheBrute: Subverted. He's the second largest of the Demon Gates and clearly favours overwhelming offense, but his Curse constantly gives him a HomeFieldAdvantage that he takes full advantage of, showing a better grasp of tactics than several of his peers.
* ChromeChampion: He can harden his body into metallic-looking plates that are hard enough to hurt Gajeel after punching him in his Etherious form. He proudly claims his defense is the strongest of the Nine Demon Gates, but he is helpless against opponents that can use steel attacks.
* FishPeople: His Etherious Form doesn't have any shark characteristics, just looking like a hulking humanoid fish.
* Foil: To fellow member Ezel. Both are the largest members of the Nine Demon Gates, possess great physical strength at their disposal and are extremely fast in spite of their size, and take pride in their power. However, Torafuzar believes that they should have honor and dignity about their station, while Ezel claims as demons they have no use for such things. Torafuzar is a NoNonsenseNemesis who prefers to finish fights quickly but taking no pleasure out of torturing his victims, while Ezel is a BloodKnight who delights in watching his enemies struggle and will drag fights out if he feels he can get more entertainment out of them. Even their abilities stand in contrast; Torafuzar can harden his body with metallic plates, boasting of having the strongest defense of the Nine Demon Gates, while Ezel can turn his arms into blades, boasting that there's nothing in the world he can't cut through. They're even both defeated by a Dragon Slayer who took exception to them attacking a loved one.
* GrimyWater: His water is black and poisonous, being highly concentrated in carbon. Later the carbon becomes the cause of his defeat.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His Tenchi Kaimei Curse creates an area of poisonous black water that is rich in carbon. Gajeel absorbs the carbon in the water to turn himself into steel, and finish him for good.
* HomeFieldAdvantage: His Tenchi Kaimei Curse provides a three-fold advantage to him: 1) It summons a mass of black water that he can swim through effortlessly and gives him the movement advantage while he whales on them; 2) Most of his opponents aren't amphibious in nature while he is, meaning he can outlast them and let them drown; and 3) even if his opponent can swim through the water and not drown, the poisonous nature of the water thanks to the excess carbon within it, which he is immune to himself, will poison his enemies and kill them within five minutes.
** Unfortunatey for Torafuzar, it is eventually turned against him as Gajeel ends up absorbing the carbon in the water to turn his iron body into steel (which can cut through Torafuzar's defense), and defeat him.
* HulkingOut: His OneWingedAngel state becomes him increasing the size and form of his shark body.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: He tries to kill Lucy once she's exhausted after her battle with Jackal. Good thing Gajeel came through for her.
* LightningBruiser: Despite his size and bulk, this guy is fast.
* MakingASplash: Fitting his shark theme he can summon a giant wave of a poison black water to submerge an entire area.
* MegatonPunch: His main method of attack after transforming and using his Curse is to just punch his opponents to death. Considering his arms are massive and most foes are too busy drowning and/or being poisoned to death at the same time, it's very effective.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: Rather than waste time torturing Lucy, he just wants to get it over with and kill her. The fact that Jackal and Lummy disagree annoys him, eventually making him stomp off. Later he decides to use his curse which eliminates Natsu from battle for the moment along with everyone else. Had Levy not given Gajeel air everyone would had been taken out by the poisonous water.
* NoSell: He is a master in the water, allowing him to swim through Aquarius' tidal waves without breaking a sweat.
* PragmaticVillainy: Unlike Ezel, he's not one to start causing chaos just for fun. He also criticizes Jackal for toying with Lucy instead of finishing her off.
* PunchClockVillain: While he does seek to kill humans under orders he does not take it personally only seeing it as a mission to accomplish.
* RedBaron: Torafuzar "The Dark".
* SharkMan: His head and arm blades resemble fins. Furthermore, "Torafuzame is Japanese for "Zebra Shark". He also has SuperSwimmingSkills and is capable of swimming through Aquarius' attacks.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Fan groups call him "Torafusa".
* SuperToughness: He parries a blow from Gajeel, who had converted his skin into metal, using only his forearm... and Gajeel was the one who got hurt from the punch. In his Etherious From, his skin can be converted into a hard, shiny substance that causes Gajeel's iron Dragon Scales to crack when he tries punching him. Too bad for Torafuzar that it doesn't protect him from things harder than iron, such as steel.
* SupernaturalSuffocation: He weaponizes his Curse this way, drowning his enemies in the poisonous waters he himself is immune to. The only way to save yourself is to be a water breather, defeating him, or somehow having a way to drain the water out.
* SuperpowerLottery: Another powerful demon to deal with. First he's pretty quick even outside of water, his curse involves creating a huge area of water that's poisoned by carbon, even if you can keep your mouth shut you still can be affected by the poison, and if you can fight back he still can turn his body into steel, making him a pretty strong member for the Nine Demon Gates.
* SweatDrop: His reaction to Natsu and Gajeel punching each other during their fight.
* TopHeavyGuy: His arms are so large that his hands lie flat on the ground when at rest. His Etherious Form has a PrimalStance when not submerged in water.
* TokenGoodTeammate: While not actually good like Silver, Torafuzar is significantly less evil when compared to the rest of his fellow Demon Gates due to having a sense of honor and a dislike of needless cruelty.
* WouldHitAGirl: As Aquarius makes full use of her Water Magic to sweep Jackal away, Torafuzar uses the water to his avenge and slashes her.

A cackling cyclops who is obsessed with wealth. Using his Revolution curse, he can absorb the souls of any living thing he touches and use their powers for himself.
----
* AchillesHeel: He cannot assimilate anything without a soul. Natsu exploits this by beating him with a big rock.
* Acrofatic: He's more nimble than he looks. When channeling Hades's soul, he's firmly in LightningBruiser territory.
* AscendedFanboy: He reveals himself to be a huge fan of Hades and his guild. And what's even better for Franmalth is that he has the soul of Hades in his possession and has access to all his magic powers.
* TheAssimilator: His CombatTentacles-like limbs don't just drain energy. Leave them attached long enough, and you get absorbed, powers included.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: His eye is black with a yellow pupil, adding to his overall inhuman appearance.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He is no less dangerous than his fellow demons despite his ridiculous appearance, as he gleefully points out when he whips out Hades' soul, proving to be just as formidable as Hades was on Sirius IslandNatsu, despite getting a massive PowerUp since their fight, still relied on four of his friends to take Hades down before, whereas he only has Lucy to back him up here. Franmalth, meanwhile, doesn't need to rely on an artificial power booster like Hades did, and can thus fully exert the dark wizard's true magic power to his heart's content. despite looking like a total mockery of him.
* CheshireCatGrin: His face is stuck in a virtually permanent grin.
* TheCollector: He has collected countless souls, including dead wizards such as Hades, which he loses upon his defeat.
* CombatTentacles: While his "tentacles" are actually his limbs, his rubber-like body can sprout more of them from almost any part of his body. And those limbs can sprout even more.
* Cyclops: He usually has one large, glowing eye in the center of his face, usually visible through his armor's face mask.
* EverybodysDeadDave: Counting the other members whose ultimate fates are left hanging, Franmalth is the only named member of Tartaros who is indisputably left alive in the end, stuck in the form of a helpless mushroom.
* EvilIsHammy: He's big, fat, greedy, and slobbers at the mouth when he cackles. Subtlety, thy name is not Franmalth.
* EvilLaugh: "Gehehe!"
* FatBastard: His constant obsessing over the quantitative worth of everything, from the actions and loyalty of his teammates to the souls he's absorbed, makes him the perfect embodiment of Greed among the demons.
* ForcedTransformation: After surviving the destruction of Hell's Core, he turns into a tiny parasitic mushroom creature that is significantly cuter and more harmless than his usual form.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Absorbing Lucy's celestial spirits backfires when Lucy tries to call them back to the spirit world to save them. Franmalth finds himself being sent to the spirit world along with them, forcing him to release them to free himself. Lucy then bluffs him by pretending that Natsu is also a spirit, which spooks Franmalth into freeing Natsu too.
* MadLibsCatchPhrase: "How much is X worth? How much?"
* ManiacTongue: It tends to wag and dangle out of his mouth while he laughs.
* MorallyBankruptBanker: He measures his teammates' value by how they use the guild's finances. For instance, he scolds Tempester for using his Devil Particles, saying they were too expensive to use casually, and even dismisses Doriath for being too expensive to justify his usefulness.
* MushroomMan: He becomes a tiny mushroom creature after narrowly avoiding the destruction of Hell's Core.
* Narm: An InUniverse version occurs when he transforms into Hades, one of Fairy Tail's most terrifying opponents. Natsu, Lucy and Happy are taken aback by how goofy he looks, shattering whatever threatening image he may have had. At least, at first...
* NighInvulnerable: Natsu's attacks just piss him off. He even No Sells his Thunder-Fire Dragon's Roar. Turns out it's because they're magic attacks and he can absorb them. He can even absorb the damage of physical attacks from Natsu. The flaw in his defense is that he can't absorb damage by things that lack souls, a large rock for example.
* NotQuiteDead: He barely survives the destruction of Hell's Core by attaching himself to Happy as a mushroom-like parasite.
* PowerParasite: Absorbing the souls of wizards and spirits gives him access to their magical abilities and changes his appearance. As Aries he can use her Wool Magic, and he has SuperStrength as Taurus.
* RedBaron: Franmalth "The Armored".
* RubberMan: His limbs can stretch out to grab something at the opposite end of the room. Very helpful, for TheAssimilator.
* SoleSurvivor: The only member of Tartaros who conclusively escaped the guild's destruction.
* SpikesOfVillainy: Can be seen on his body once he bursts out of his armor.
* SquashedFlat: The end result of being repeatedly bashed with a large rock by Natsu. He technically died from it, too.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: He has only one of them, being a Cyclops, but it counts given that he is a demon.
* TemptingFate: After being beaten, he boasts of his guild's ResurrectiveImmortality and goes to pay Hell's Core for a visit right when Mirajane blows it all sky-high. Fortunately for him, he barely manages to survive.
* VillainExitStageLeft: When the dragons show up and start wrecking the Faces, he promptly retreats from the scene.
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: Trope. When Franmalth reveals his trump card to be the soul of Hades, Natsu gloats that he already took Hades down once before, and figures beating someone of his level a second time will be a cakewalk with his own current level of power. Unfortunately for Natsu, he realizes his power alone still isn't enough to match Hades's power in his prime.
* VillainousBreakdown: He goes completely berserk when he realizes Project Face's failure, which makes him all the more dangerous since he unloads Hades' terrifying magic on Natsu, Lucy, and Happy.
* YourSoulIsMine: He has the power to steal others' souls, either by attaching his tentacle-like arms to them or taking them after death. It's not clear what would happen to humans who lose their souls, but for Celestial Spirits, he absorbs their entire bodies.

A bunny-girl demon and subordinate of Kyôka who runs Hell's Core, a lab where injured demons are restored and new demons are made. Her Slippery Curse allows her to slide across surfaces and deflect all sorts of attacks.
----
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: She is head over heels for guys like Jackal and Tempester, ignoring their psychopathic tendencies.
* AnnoyingLaugh: Lummy has an insufferable squeaky giggle.
* CharacterTic: She often strikes a melodramatic pose by pulling her arm over her face and turning super-realistic for a moment.
* CloneArmy: It turns out after she's killed by Jackal that Lummy was mass-produced, leaving behind countless copies for Elfman, Lisanna, Jet and Droy to clean up.
* CuteAndPsycho: As adorable and childish as she is, she has no trouble disfiguring girls she thinks are prettier than her.
* CuteButCacophonic: As if her sadism wasn't enough to make her irksome, she has an overly ditzy and bubbly disposition and a grating laugh, made even worse when her clones are all gathered in one place.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Her eyes usually remain closed unless she undergoes her ArtShift.
* FauxAffablyEvil: She acts like a ditzy girl, but is every bit of a remorseless, human-hating demon who lives to see humans maimed and disfigured.
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: She wears a fluffy one decked out with pompoms.
* MadScientist: She is the medical demon responsible for reviving defeated demons in Tartaros, and she enjoys turning pretty human girls into grotesque monsters.
* MoodSwinger: She tends to switch to a hilariously melodramatic personality with a more realistic-looking face from time to time.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Her decision to pump Mirajane full of demon factor fluids to turn her into an ugly bug instead rejuvenates her, since Mirajane already specializes in absorbing demons. It also gives Mirajane a connection to Hell's Core, allowing her to blow it up once Lummy blurts out its purpose, which leaves one Demon Gate dead, another in a helpless state, and the guild as a whole without its advantage of ResurrectiveImmortality.
* PluckyComicRelief: She is incredibly goofy, and her obsession with all the "hunks" in the guild is PlayedForLaughs, which makes her stand out among the cruel, mostly humorless demons.
* SpinAttack: Her curse allows her to perform this attack.
* SuperSliding: Lamy's Slippery Curse enables her to glide along any surface, even the surface of water. She's so slippery in this state that even bullets simply slide off her while she's in motion.
* ThisLoserIsYou: She is a Fangirl who clings to good-looking male villains despite the horrifying atrocities they commit. This behavior gets her killed by one of the very villains she swoons over.
* UnusualEars: Her rabbit ears are the only demonic trait she has.
* WeakButSkilled: She's not strong like the Demon Gates, but she does help repair and remodel the other guild members when they are killed.
* YourHeadASplode: Jackal grabs onto her face and blows her to smithereens after she grates on his nerves.

* ElectricTorture: Kyôka uses his electrical powers to this effect on Erza.
* Intangibility: He can phase his body through walls.
* MixAndMatchCritters: He has the head of a frog, the body of an octopus, and bug-like antennae.
* ShockAndAwe: A more natural version of this trope, as his electric charge doesn't extend beyond his tentacles, only allowing for electrocution on contact.
