!Main Characters
[[folder:Chiaki Nanami]]
!!Chiaki Nanami / Keiko Watanabe
The Ultimate Gamer and protagonist of the story. After [[Recap/SmileAtDespairInTheNameOfHope the events that left her on the brink of death]], she was resuscitated by Izuru in secret. [[AfterTheEnd Waking up to find the world has changed completely]], she now tries to recover while attempting to bond with Izuru and reconcile with what happened to her and her friends.
----
* BrokenPedestal: She starts the story proud of being a student of Hope's Peak. By the end, she's become so disillusioned with it as a result of [[spoiler: the experiments on Hajime/Izuru]], the refusal to do anything to bring down Junko, and the ''rampant'' elitism the school bred that she states the one good thing to come out of the tragedy was burning Hope's Peak to the ground.
* FriendlessBackground: The reason she's so attached to Hajime and Class 77 is because they were her first friends; before she attended Hope's Peak, she had none. The kids her age either thought she was weird or [[MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold stuck-up]]. It's also implied in ''Expansion Pack'' that she got harassed for winning at tournaments.
* GamerChick: It ''is'' her talent. Fittingly, her narration is peppered with video game references, and she uses games to try and bond with Izuru.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Chiaki’s self-esteem is pretty much destroyed by the events of ''Side:Despair'' Episode 10; once she remembers the full details of what happened, she rips herself apart for having [[LeeroyJenkins such poor wisdom]]. Even after she gets through her depression, she tends to put herself down and doubt her own judgment.
* KnightInSourArmor: The ordeal she went through causes Chiaki to acknowledge that the good guys don't always win and you can't always trust people in authority. However, instead of letting this embitter her, she considers it a lesson so she can keep being a good person [[spoiler:and helping others]] without repeating past mistakes.
* LonelyAtTheTop: The first chapter of ''Expansion Pack'' implies she would get harassed for winning at tournaments. Eventually she stopped going because she thought it would be more fun for everyone if she wasn't there.
* LonelyRichKid: Her parents showered her with money and video games in lieu of actual affection, and she had no friends before entering Hope’s Peak — the other kids mistook her shyness for being stuck-up and thought she was weird for loving video games so much.
* LoveConfession: Gives one to Izuru via [[spoiler:literally blurting out and stumbling through it.]]
* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: In her past. She was always focused on video games and kept to herself because she didn't know how to connect with people. Unfortunately, this caused them to think she was snooty.
* MyGreatestFailure: After she remembers the events of Episode 10 of the Despair Arc, it seems hardly a day goes by when she doesn't view her hasty rescue attempt as this. It takes months of recovery to get to the point where she resolves to make up for her mistake, [[spoiler:resulting, of course, in her attempt to join the Future Foundation]].
* NiceGirl: Her kindness was not damaged in the slightest by her ordeal.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: In her own words, Chiaki is “weirdly touchy”. Izuru isn’t particularly bothered by it, but [[spoiler:Kanon]] finds it uncomfortable when Chiaki sits too close.
* OfficialCouple: Eventually with Izuru/Hajime.
* SecretlySelfish: While Chiaki is a genuinely sweet and altruistic person, she’s also starved for attention and greedy for friendship, to the point she’d rather Class 77 and Chisa continue terrorizing the world than get caught by the Future Foundation. The biggest reason she withholds [[spoiler:information about Chisa being TheMole]] is because she prioritizes reuniting with her friends above all else.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Her ordeal in the maze left Chiaki with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, experiencing nightmares of her torture, being triggered by reminders (such as elevators), and subconsciously associating [[spoiler:Kanon]] with Junko because of her makeup.
* SpiritedCompetitor: She does have a competitive streak, but more than anything else cares about having fun. Even though he always beats her, she keeps challenging Izuru to video games because she enjoys playing against him, and wants him to enjoy it too.
* StepfordSmiler: Despite [[BreakTheCutie everything she's gone through]], Chiaki refuses to give up hope or her ideals and keeps forging ahead, even though she has a lot of baggage.
* TookALevelInBadass: Chiaki resolves to never be as helpless as she was in ''Side:Despair'' 10 again, and starts learning to protect herself [[spoiler:when she joins the Future Foundation. It pays off majorly come Chapter 24]].
* TraumaButton: The sight of elevators trigger Chiaki back to the events of ''Side:Despair'' 10. Neither she nor Izuru are aware of it when they watch the Killing Game, so when she sees Class 78 enter the elevator for the first trial, she has a complete meltdown.
* TraumaCongaLine: She's carrying a lot of pain, between what happened to her friends and the trauma of being almost killed.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Izuru Kamukura / Hajime Hinata]]
!!Izuru Kamukura / Hajime Hinata
The Ultimate Hope and [[{{Deuteragonist}} second protagonist]] of the story. As he watches Chiaki die, remnants of his old persona, Hajime Hinata, move him to intervene, save and hide her. Despite staying to help her through her recovery, he still brews his own ulterior plans.
----
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Morals and actions mean nothing to Izuru, only whether or not they result in unpredictability. He’s baffled by anything he sees as illogical, is confused by the emotions Chiaki stirs in him, and sees no reason to unnecessarily hurt nor help people. His alien mentality is a source of friction for them, but Chiaki eventually decides that even if she can’t understand his ways of thinking, she still cares about and accepts him.
* BrokenAce: He has every talent and finds life completely boring and pointless because of it. Not only that, it's even implied he only views himself as a LivingMacguffin rather than an actual human being.
* BrutalHonesty: Izuru speaks in a very straightforward and blunt manner.
* TheChessmaster: And how. He anonymously funds the Future Foundation so they can keep working on the Neo World Program and put up a good fight against Ultimate Despair; [[spoiler:enacts a MemoryGambit with Chiaki in case his plan goes wrong]]; and eventually plays the Remnants and the Future Foundation like fiddles to get himself and Class 77 into the Neo World Program.
* TheComicallySerious: There are times when Izuru's bluntness and boredom end up making him this.
-->'''Chiaki''': Where are you now?
-->'''Izuru''': Akihabara.
-->'''Chiaki''': [...]How's it doing?
-->'''Izuru''': [[CasualDangerDialogue It is on fire.]]
* CrazyPrepared: Having every talent in existence means he can see nearly every possibility, and he definitely plans for them. This ranges from simply laying traps, to [[spoiler:enacting a MemoryGambit]], to setting up contingencies and safe-houses for Chiaki in event of danger.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: PlayedForLaughs. [[spoiler:When Hiyoko snarls that he'd better not have coerced Chiaki into doing something perverted, Hajime can only incredulously ask if she really thinks he's the kind of person who would.]]
* EmptyEyes: Numerous characters remark that his stare is eerily devoid of emotion. Mikan even goes so far as to call him ''dead-eyed''.
* LackOfEmpathy: Izuru is incredibly callous to anyone not named Chiaki. It’s most explicit when watching the Killing Game — while she’s horrified and saddened by what Class 78 goes through, he remarks on it being boring several times and only wants to be entertained.
* NoSocialSkills: Conversation with Izuru tends to be stilted and awkward since he doesn't always respond, he sometimes walks away or otherwise ends it abruptly, he’s [[BrutalHonesty very blunt]], and he stares a lot. Justified since he was kept hidden away from society and thus never developed those skills.
* OfficialCouple: Eventually with Chiaki.
* SplitPersonalityMerge: Hajime and Izuru fuse after the events of ''VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair'', with the new persona going by "Hajime" and having his empathy, but still being every bit as analytical as the latter. [[spoiler:He doesn't mind Chiaki calling him "Izuru", though, and she decides to just switch since she fell in love with both of them.]]
* TheSpock: His brain just runs so fast that he analyzes, deconstructs, and compartmentalizes everything without really trying. As a result, almost all his decision-making processes are based off cold rationality, and the few things that can hold his interest are what he ''can't'' break down because they make no logical sense.
* TheStoic: As per usual, Izuru barely shows emotion, and when he does it’s in minuscule amounts.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: While his ‘sugar’ side is still pretty chilly, Izuru is noticeably softer and more emotional around Chiaki. With everyone else, he has a severe LackOfEmpathy.
* SupremeChef: Naturally, cooking is included in his long list of talents. Taken to almost OrgasmicallyDelicious extremes by Chiaki's descriptions.
* TookALevelInKindness: His disposition improves ''massively'' after merging with Hajime.
[[/folder]]

!Future Foundation
[[folder:Miaya Gekkogahara]]

!!Miaya Gekkogahara
The former Ultimate Therapist, a wheelchair-bound young woman who only speaks through her rabbit avatar. She's the head of the seventh division [[spoiler:and provides advice to Chiaki once she joins. Is killed by Monaca Towa.]]
----
* AscendedExtra: Goes from [[spoiler:not even appearing on-screen before dying]] in canon to a recurring character. She also gets ADayInTheLimelight in ''Expansion Pack''.
* AscendedFangirl: The reason her avatar is a magical girl? Miaya always used to watch magical girl anime and thought they were the coolest.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Miaya is odd even for an Ultimate, as she only talks through her rabbit avatar Usami, but she’s also very competent at her job and is a kind and reasonable woman.
* CompanionCube: Usami isn't just her avatar, but was based off an actual stuffed rabbit she carried around and spoke through when she was younger.
* DisappearedDad: She's very close to her mother, but no father is mentioned. ''Expansion Pack'' reveals he died when she was a baby.
* DontYouDarePityMe: In her chapter in ''Expansion Pack'', it turns out Miaya always secretly hated the way people would pity her for being disabled, but never had the courage to say it.
* NiceGirl: Is one of the kindest people in Future Foundation, going out of her way to talk to lowly interns and comfort anyone who looks like they need it. She's even willing to [[spoiler:help Makoto rehabilitate Class 77.]]
* ShrinkingViolet: She was very withdrawn and shy as a child. Nowadays she's doing better, but still relies on a CompanionCube to talk for her.
* WiseBeyondHerYears: She displays an adult-like maturity as a child and teenager in ''Expansion Pack'', which her mom compliments her on.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Makoto Naegi]]
!!Makoto Naegi
The former Ultimate Lucky Student and current Ultimate Hope. Having survived the Second Killing Game, he joins the Future Foundation's 14th branch, where he is eventually approached by Class 77...
----
* AllLovingHero: Izuru specifically chooses him to "help" Class 77 because of this; out of everyone in Future Foundation, Makoto's one of the very few who would try to save Remnants of Despair. Even after witnessing the Killing School Trip and learning how he was used, Makoto holds no grudges and keeps protecting them.
* {{Forgiveness}}: Holds no ill-will for Hajime or any of Class 77 even after being used, put in danger, and being accused of treason because of them.
* HopeBringer: His words alone can break a person's despair, as seen in the final trial of the Second Killing Game. In fact, this trait is the reason he was given the title Ultimate Hope.
* NiceGuy: Makoto is unequivocally nice to everyone, even Remnants and Remnant supporters. [[spoiler:Even when suspecting Chiaki of being the latter, he still treats her with kindness and promises not to hurt her.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kyoko Kirigiri]]
!!Kyoko Kirigiri
The former Ultimate Detective, a survivor of the Second Killing Game who becomes head of Future Foundation's 14th division.
----
* DeclarationOfProtection: Walks with Makoto into danger, without backup, because she's determined to protect him.
* RestoredMyFaithInHumanity: She's still rather skeptical and pragmatic, but Makoto's influence is a large part of why she believes in the power of hope.
* TheStoic: While unnerved by Class 77, her face doesn't show it at all, and she remains calm and collected even when she thinks they've been trapped.
* {{Workaholic}}: Chooses to translate "bed rest" as "working from bed"; even [[spoiler:a near-death experience]] doesn't stop her.
* YouAreInCommandNow: [[spoiler:With every other branch head dead or missing in the aftermath of the Final Killing Game, she ends up the Chairwoman by default. Makoto suspects she doesn't intend to stay in power long, but in the meantime she uses her position to cover Class 77's escape.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kyosuke Munakata]]
!!Kyosuke Munakata
The former Ultimate Student Council President, leader of the second division, and vice-president of the Future Foundation. An extremist desiring to eliminate despair above all else.
----
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: Vice-leader, real leader in all but name, and able to back it up. Not only did he fight [[MasterSwordsman Peko Pekoyama]] to a standstill in a duel, he's also rumored to have personally killed a hundred Remnants.
* BadBoss: It's implied he kills other members of Future Foundation if he finds them in despair, and even a fellow branch head, Miaya, is afraid of him.
* KnightTemplar: His mentality is that despair should be eradicated at ''all'' costs in order to usher in a peaceful era, and he holds no mercy for anyone who displays it.
* UnwittingPawn: To Chisa. Many of his actions and beliefs are a direct result of her manipulations.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Chisa Yukizome]]
!!Chisa Yukizome
The former Ultimate Maid, teacher of Class 77-B, and Chiaki's trusted maternal figure, current head of the fifth division. Having been brainwashed, she's really a Remnant mole.
----
* AffablyEvil: Is nothing less than polite, friendly, and smiling as she [[spoiler:plots how to instigate the Final Killing Game with Monaca.]]
* TheChessmaster: Her plotting is on [[TheAce Izuru's]] level. [[spoiler:She helps Class 77 get in the Neo World Program, then turns around and exposes the plan to Kyosuke with the goal of getting him to put Makoto on trial. Having subtly influenced Tengan into starting the Final Killing Game, she then invites Monaca to partake in it to further spread confusion, with her ultimate goal being to eliminate every other branch head and drive Kyosuke to despair. And for the most part, it ''works''.]]
* GreaterScopeVillain: [[spoiler:Chisa is revealed to be responsible for basically the entirety of ''Side:Future''. She helped Class 77 infiltrate the Neo World Program, exposed Makoto's role in hiding Class 77 to Kyosuke, and then enabled Monaca's murder of Miaya and presence in the Final Killing Game. Not only that, she had a hand in Chiaki's torture in the first place, making her indirectly responsible for the repercussions on her psyche as well.]]
* TheMole: Is really a Remnant of Despair.
* MoralityChain: Exploited. She knows Kyosuke listens to her, so she manipulates her hold over him to push him into doing actions she wants.
* ParentalSubstitute: Chiaki loved her like a mother, making her betrayal hit extra hard.
* WalkingSpoiler: Being a mole isn't the spoiler. It's what she ''does'' as a mole that is.
[[/folder]]

!Class 77-B
[[folder:Nagito Komaeda]]
!!Nagito Komaeda
The Ultimate Lucky Student of Class-77, a young man obsessed with hope. Due to his luck working in extreme cycles of good-bad, he is constantly in the middle of unbelievable circumstances.
----
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Is a true believer in the power of hope and any despair being acceptable if for hope's sake. For example, he thinks Chiaki's TragicMistake is okay because everything turned out alright in the end. She quickly refutes that.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: He puts himself down as trash often, and overall has a very low opinion of himself. In fact, he considers himself so unworthy, he doesn't even want to be in therapy because he thinks it's taking time away from the others! Chiaki and Class 77 try to reassure him otherwise, but it's clearly something that will take a lot of time for him to overcome.
* LoveFreak: To say he loves hope would be an understatement.
* NoSocialSkills: He's pretty blind about social conventions. Even when he tries to comfort someone, his particular idea of comfort is too bizarre to really help, and [[spoiler:he hasn't apologized to Chiaki F. for getting her killed--not because he's being rude, as some would think, but because he just genuinely hasn't thought of it.]] Chapter 9 of ''Expansion Pack'' shows that he's working through this in therapy.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:He picks up that Chiaki F. is going through an existential crisis and comparing herself to Chiaki N., and tries to comfort her.]] His [[BlueAndOrangeMorality mindset]] makes it more confusing than helpful, but she appreciates the thought.
* ThePollyanna: He's constantly cheerful no matter what despair or misfortune awaits him, to the incredulity of his classmates.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mikan Tsumiki]]
!!Mikan Tsumiki
Shy, nervous, and self-deprecating, yet greatly skilled as the Ultimate Nurse. She often injures herself tripping, which she does as a secret way of getting attention.
----
* AndIMustScream: She makes it clear she was perfectly aware of what she did to Chiaki, but couldn't stop herself.
* ApologizesALot: She'd apologize for existing, depressingly enough, if she thought she had to.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Deliberately invoked and deconstructed. Mikan trips so much because she's acting out for attention; in her book, humiliating herself is better than being ignored.
* DesperatelyCravesAffection: Deconstructed. Mikan has been abused all her life, leaving her with a desperate desire to be loved by people. In the absence of that, she'll settle for any kind of attention, even cruelness or humility. The result has made her a miserable ExtremeDoormat who hates the way she's treated, but still finds it preferable to being ignored.
* GrewASpine: She finally stands up for herself to Hiyoko in Chapter 5 of ''Expansion Pack''. It backfires and the bullying redoubles, and she backs down quickly; however, by the end of the chapter, she's able to do it a few more times. She's trying, bless her.
* ManipulativeBitch: As Ultimate Despair, Mikan would put on acts of either helplessness or compassion to lure her victims into traps.
* NervousWreck: She's constantly anxious and worried about other people ignoring her. It ends up driving her to a panic attack when Hiyoko's bullying goes too far.
* ShrinkingViolet: She's timid to the bone.
* {{Yandere}}: While Ultimate Despair, for Junko. The scene of her holding and stroking Nagito's Junko-hand, while blushing, says it all. After being freed from her brainwashing, however, Mikan holds nothing but hatred for her.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ultimate Imposter]]
!!Ultimate Imposter
A young man who completely lacks a name, family, and personal history. He lives by stealing the identities of others, and is able to perfectly mimic their appearance, voice, and even talent.
----
* MasterOfDisguise: This is his entire talent, and he's extremely good at it. Even knowing about it and arriving with the real Byakuya, when she meets the Remnants, Kyoko has to actively remind herself she's just speaking to an imposter.
* NumberTwo: He refers to himself as Izuru's lieutenant, of sorts, while Ultimate Despair, since the latter prefers not interacting with the others.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: He's normally calm and kind, which makes it all the more jarring when he yells at Hiyoko for pushing Mikan into a panic attack.
* SpellMyNameWithAThe: He’s always called the Ultimate Imposter, or sometimes just "the Imposter". Mikan calls him "Imposter-san", but that’s only when speaking ''to'' him, not ''referring'' to him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ibuki Mioda]]
!!Ibuki Mioda
An excitable and energetic woman, the Ultimate Musician. She used to be the guitarist in a popular girls’ band, but left because of creative differences.
----
* GenkiGirl: As usual, Ibuki has a lot of energy.
* TheInsomniac: She mentions having a lot of trouble sleeping in the final chapter of ''Extra Life'', due to seeing her crimes play out behind her eyelids.
* NiceGirl: She instantly, and with no holds barred, forgives Mikan for ''murdering her'' in the second game. When Mikan tearfully offers to be humiliated in exchange for the forgiveness, a shocked Ibuki exclaims that's not what she wants at all.
* TheNicknamer: [[spoiler:To differentiate between the Chiakis, she uses "Nana-chan" for the human, and "Saki-chan" for the AI, based off their surnames.]]
* PerkyGoth: She looks scary, with her piercings and dyed hair, but is a peppy, happy sweetheart.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** She catches Hajime and Chiaki being on FirstNameBasis right away at the reunion, and squeals in delight.
** She also wonders what'd happen if [[spoiler:the World Destroyer hooked up with AI Chiaki]].
* StepfordSmiler: Like a lot of Class 77. Despite how perky she is, she's clearly affected by her time as Ultimate Despair, if her admission she can't sleep at night is anything to go by.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu]]
!!Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu
The Ultimate Yakuza and heir of the Kuzuryu Clan, Japan’s largest crime syndicate. Short in stature and temper. Despite his fearful reputation, he has a moral good and a good heart.
----
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's got a short temper, a foul mouth, and outright threatens Hajime when he thinks Chiaki being alive is a joke. However, if he's concerned about his friends, he ''will'' try to do something to help. He's also a supportive and loving boyfriend.
* LetsWaitAWhile: Non-sexual version. He and Peko take the better part of a year to become a couple because they both want her to discover who she is outside of her relation to him.
* SirSwearsALot: A lot of his sentences have some kind of curse in them, and he also drops the first "fuck" in ''Extra Life''.
* UnderstandingBoyfriend: He's 100% understanding of Peko needing time to discover herself, actively encourages it, and lets her set the pace in their relationship because he doesn't want to force her into anything.
* VictoriousChildhoodFriend: With Peko.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Peko Pekoyama]]
!!Peko Pekoyama
Fuyuhiko’s hitwoman and childhood friend, she’s the Ultimate Swordswoman, said to be unrivaled with a blade. Due to her upbringing, she sees herself as just a tool. Her stoic and taciturn demeanor masks a secret love of fluffy animals.
----
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: Since she's had purpose defined by her usefulness as a sword her whole life, Peko's uncomfortable living on Jabberwock since there's no need for a sword there. Trying to find purpose again is the center of her CharacterDevelopment.
* JourneyToFindOneself: A non-travelling version, but she spends her chapter of ''Expansion Pack'' trying to discover who she is as a woman, not a tool.
* TheStoic: She doesn't express herself much, [[NotSoStoic but is making improvements in smiling and laughing]].
* ThrowTheDogABone: She's able to pet Yumigami, as well as Gundham's animals.
* VictoriousChildhoodFriend: With Fuyuhiko.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sonia Nevermind]]
!!Sonia Nevermind
The foreign Ultimate Princess from the country of Novoselic. She is kind and dignified, but has a strange side because of her eager fascination with Japan, the occult, and serial killers.
----
* BeneathTheMask: Invoked and lampshaded. Kazuichi is shocked to learn of her longing for Novoselic and why she visits Jabberwock's military base...because he never bothered to check if she ''was'' wearing a mask in the first place.
* CutenessProximity: Breaks into coos when she sees the Four Dark Devas of Destruction.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: Her time as Ultimate Despair was this, with Sonia turning weapons on other countries for the heck of it. If her citizens protested, she turned the weapons on them too. Chapter 10 of ''Expansion Pack'' also mentions she did things like bazooka hospitals.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Sonia had to bear the burden of being the perfect crown princess in her own country, and never got the chance to be a normal girl. As such, she was really hoping for the chance to be just a regular high school student when she started attending Hope's Peak.
* NiceGirl: Even when she rejects Kazuichi and calls him on stalking her, she does so in a rather polite way.
* NightmareFetishist: She enjoys the occult, reads about serial killers, and takes a liking to the horror genre of video games.
* OfficialCouple: With Gundham.
* SelfMadeOrphan: Chapter 10 of ''Expansion Pack'' reveals she [[spoiler:tortured her parents to death]]. It still haunts her.
* StepfordSmiler: She deeply misses Novoselic and visits the military base because it's the closest reminder she has to home. She's also afraid that revealing the true details of what she did as Ultimate Despair will drive her friends away from her. Despite that, she tries to keep up her kind and cheerful demeanor.
* WarriorPrincess: She's implied to have fought off assassins personally while Ultimate Despair, and is familiar with military weapons and tactics.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: Is hit twice over with this. Like the rest of her class, she's exiled from society; however, she's not Japanese, so she's exiled into a foreign country on top of that.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Gundham Tanaka]]
!!Gundham Tanaka
The eccentric Ultimate Breeder, who acts like an eighth grader by proclaiming himself to be a ‘supreme overlord’, among other things. However, he is very gentle and loving when it comes to animals.
----
* AntiquatedLinguistics: He speaks in a way more similar to a medieval fantasy overlord than a modern 20-something.
* TheBeastmaster: While Ultimate Despair. Kyoko mentions he usually has an animal army around to command, and the lack of their presence is a sign in favor of the Remnants' call for help not being a trap.
* BlackMagic: Claims to have dark, supernatural powers.
* {{Chuunibyou}}: Acts like one, claiming to have superpowers, pretending to be an evil overlord, and speaking in AntiquatedLinguistics. He also dresses in a dark and extravagant fashion, and his [[spoiler:dream world, which the World Destroyer visits, is where he's literally the ruler of the world.]]
* FriendToAllLivingThings: He loves animals, and is running the ranch on Jabberwock.
* HatesBeingTouched: Gundham already had issues with this before becoming Ultimate Despair. Now he's even worse about letting people touch him. He makes an exception for Sonia, but even then he's still hesitant.
* LargeHam: Gundham wouldn't be Gundham if he wasn't overly dramatic.
* OfficialCouple: With Sonia.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kazuichi Soda]]
!!Kazuichi Soda
The Ultimate Mechanic, who uses flashiness to hide his true, cowardly personality. Has an unrequited crush on Sonia.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: To Sonia, not in terms of looks but in terms of [[StalkerWithACrush behavior]]. She eventually straight-up tells him that she doesn't appreciate the way he treats her, driving him to a HeroicBSOD.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Hajime, who he calls his "soul friend" and "bro".
* HopelessSuitor: To Sonia, who not only doesn't enjoy his behavior, but hooks up with Gundham. Having to accept this is part of his CharacterDevelopment, in fact.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's irritable when stressed, openly jealous of Gundham's relationship with Sonia, and creepily obsessed with Sonia herself. At the same time, he's appreciative of the friendships he's made and apologizes to Hajime, Chiaki, and Fuyuhiko for snapping at them. By the end of Chapter 4 in ''Expansion Pack'', he's also accepted the fact Sonia isn't interested in him and plans to respect that.
* LovingAShadow: [[spoiler:He admits at the end of ''Expansion Pack'' that he placed Sonia on a pedestal, based off his dream of dating a blonde lady, and didn't take the effort to know her.]]
* MomentKiller:
** PlayedForLaughs at the end of ''Extra Life''; he throws a volleyball at Hajime (who easily catches it) when he and Chiaki start making out in public.
** Played more seriously in Chapter 4 of ''Expansion Pack'', when he crashes Hajime and Chiaki's date to yell at the former for not telling him Gundham and Sonia were going out.
* MoodSwinger: During his chapter of ''Expansion Pack'', due to his stress over Sonia and Gundham's RelationshipUpgrade.
* StalkerWithACrush: He knows Sonia's exact schedule around Jabberwock Island, and considering his canon behavior, that's the ''least'' of the stalking.

[[folder:Akane Owari]]
!!Akane Owari
An acrobat and athlete who far prefers fighting and eating to either of those activities. She loses interest in things she doesn’t get very quickly.
----
* BigEater: She gives an enthusiastic "HELL YEAH! MORE FOOD!" when Class 77 plans a celebration for Chiaki's return.
* BookDumb: She doesn't understand [[spoiler:the World Destroyer's]] 'techno jazz', and asks for a simplified version.
* HiddenDepths: She's surprisingly good at hairstyling. It comes from her experience with doing her younger sisters' hair.
* LogicBomb: She tells Chiaki that she'll punch her if she's a ghost, which would be pretty difficult considering the nature of ghosts.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nekomaru Nidai]]
!!Nekomaru Nidai
The Ultimate Team Manager who, despite his muscular build, would rather help others succeed in sports. In part this is because of a heart defect, but he maintains a lively personality despite that.
----
* BoisterousBruiser: He's loud, friendly, and loves a good fight.
* LargeHam: Nekomaru doesn't talk, he ''booms''.
* NoIndoorVoice: 'Quiet' is an adjective that certainly does ''not'' apply to him.
* ToiletHumor: His 'advice' to Ibuki, for falling asleep, is that she should eat as much as she can and then take a good shit before bed.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mahiru Koizumi]]
!!Mahiru Koizumi
A level-headed photographer, famous for taking pictures of people’s smiles. She’s good at looking after her classmates, but tends to be harder on the boys.
----
* MoralMyopia: Addressed and subverted. She admits she was wrong to defend Hiyoko from bullying, but not Mikan, and starts crying while trying to apologize to the latter.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After Mikan has a panic attack from Hiyoko's bullying, Mahiru becomes deeply ashamed of never standing up for her.
* TeamMom: She looks after everyone's wellbeing. Kazuichi even compares her to a no-nonsense mother.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hiyoko Saionji]]
!!Hiyoko Saionji
The Ultimate Traditional Dancer and heiress of the Saionji clan. She was once popular for her child-like figure, but had a growth spurt. Sadly, it did nothing to change her cruel nature.
----
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's ''trying'' to become this, after [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone her bullying]] [[WhatTheHellHero goes too far]]. Hiyoko notes [[BreakingInOldHabits breaking old habits isn't easy]], and slips back into her behavior multiple times, but she also becomes more cooperative and apologizes easier.
* IHatePastMe: She hates the weak little girl she used to be, and so became her tormentors.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: She's very shaken when her bullying causes Mikan to have a panic attack.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Self-admitted. She finally tells Mikan that she used to be tormented and weak and helpless, just like her. Because she hated being reminded of that, she took her anger out on Mikan.
* PetTheDog: Offers to share her father's bedtime drink recipe to help [[TheInsomniac Ibuki]] sleep in the epilogue of ''Extra Life''.
* TookALevelInKindness: The first step of her CharacterDevelopment is Hiyoko admitting her bullying was horrible, apologizing to Mikan, and promising to change her behavior.

[[folder:Teruteru Hanamura]]
!!Teruteru Hanamura
The Ultimate Cook whose passion for sex matches his passion for food. He acts like a suave ladies man and cool city-dweller, but is really a mama’s boy from the country.
----
* AThreesomeIsHot: He's pretty disappointed to learn that Hajime and Chiaki are not open to harem routes [[spoiler:with their AIs]].
* AccentSlipUp: He slides back into his country drawl from shock at the reunion with Chiaki.
* AllMenArePerverts: He's an adult now, but just as hormonal and sex-addicted as he was as a teenager. [[spoiler:The World Destroyer]] mentions that [[spoiler:he had to filter out a lot of erotic fantasies while diving through Teruteru's mind]].
* ExtremeOmnisexual: He makes a pass at [[spoiler:a 2D artificial intelligence]].
[[/folder]]

!Other
[[folder:Junko Enoshima]]
!!Junko Enoshima
Ultimate Despair and the BigBad, a world-famous supermodel and fashionista who desires nothing more to cause TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt...and succeeds. Having tortured Chiaki almost to death, both protagonists hold a grudge against her.
----
* TheBadGuyWins: She succeeds in causing The Tragedy only three chapters into the fic.
* HopeCrusher: Hope is a natural anathema to her. Not only does she want to crush it for her success, she actively loves doing so.
* OffscreenVillainy: An odd, inverted example. She herself is offscreen for much of the fic, as Izuru breaks contact with her as soon as the Tragedy starts, but her villainy's impact is very much seen on the world.
* VillainousLegacy: She's not around for much of the fic [[spoiler:and dies in her third appearance]], but her influence and actions have huge consequences on the world. On a more personal level, her run-in with Chiaki left her with mental scars, and Izuru regards her as his worst enemy.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kanon Nakajima]]
!!Kanon Nakajima
Leon's cousin, an escaped Captive of Towa City who was rescued by Future Foundation. [[spoiler:She is taken to Chiaki as her first therapy patient.]]
----
* BrokenBird: Her experiences and loss have left her inwardly believing no one would genuinely want to be her friend and that revenge is all she has left to live for.
* {{Revenge}}: She holds a serious grudge against Future Foundation. The only reasons she doesn't carry it out are her friendship with Yasuhiro and just plain not having anywhere else to go.
* SoleSurvivor: Her parents were murdered while she was held captive and Leon died in the Killing School Life. It's not known what happened to Leon's parents, but Kanon heavily implies they're dead, too.
* SourOutsideSadInside: Makes a lot of sarcastic and derogatory remarks, but it's a defensive mechanism against her pent-up depression over her family's deaths and [[spoiler:her guilt for attempting to kill Yasuhiro]].
* {{Yandere}}: Deconstructed; her obsession with Leon is portrayed as ''very'' negative for her mental and emotional health, and is the primary root of nearly all her personal issues.
[[/folder]]

![=IAs=]
[[folder:The World Destroyer]]
!!The World Destroyer
An artificial intelligence created by and modeled after the merged Hajime and Izuru. Despite his intimidating name, he was designed to rescue the comatose students of Class 77.
----
* AscendedExtra: He has about fifteen minutes of screentime in a Japanese-only OVA. Here, he gets a surprise appearance at the end of ''Extra Life'' and his own lengthy chapter in ''Expansion Pack''.
* BenevolentAI: He is an artificial intelligence created to rescue the comatose students of Class 77, and that’s exactly what he does, no qualms about it. While it could be argued (at least the World Destroyer would) that his benevolence is only programmed into him, Class 77 believes he can develop beyond what he was created as. It's hinted that he can, as he starts to find genuine happiness in helping people, like cheering Chiaki up.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He wears all black and has bright red eyes, but is firmly a good guy.
* DeathbringerTheAdorable: His name is '''the World Destroyer'''...and he’s an AI whose primary purpose is therapy and restoration. Ibuki slapping the cutesy "-chan" honorific onto his scary name also gives the same impression.
* TheDutifulSon: 'Son' is an exaggeration, as neither refers to the other in a familial manner, but he is a creation of Hajime's. The Word Destroyer is only concerned with carrying out his duty to Hajime and Class 77 as best he can, no matter how hard it is or how long it may take.
* HumbleHero: Doesn't feel he should be thanked for saving Class 77 because he was just doing his job.
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: He doesn't show up, or even get mentioned, until the final chapter of ''Extra Life''. But to be fair, he didn't exist for most of the fic.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: Just in case you had any doubts on who created him, the World Destroyer is as serious and expressionless as Izuru. Since his creator had a SplitPersonalityMerge [[TookALevelInKindness for the better]] by that point, though, he's tempered by Hajime's empathy and values hope highly.
* ThePhilosopher: He and Chiaki F. have several conversations on what constitutes personhood and whether they're ''really'' alive. [[spoiler:They come to the conclusion that they are, and even if they weren't, their friends think they are. That's enough for them.]]
* [[RobotGirl Robot Boy]]: [[spoiler:Kazuichi builds robot bodies for the AIs; Usami declines and Alter Ego can't leave, but he and Chiaki F. accept, and are able to enter the outside world to be with their friends.]]
* SpellMyNameWithAThe: Ibuki shortens his name to "Destroyer-chan", but other than that, he’s always addressed as "the World Destroyer".
* TheStoic: He’s always calm and never lets emotion influence him, or even shows them.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Hajime, his "Creator". It doesn't even occur to him to question his judgment.
* WalkingSpoiler: His mere existence is this, given the [[LastEpisodeNewCharacter lateness]] of his appearance.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Holds this attitude towards ''himself''. The World Destroyer views AIs, himself included, as tools to be used by humans. Everyone else argues otherwise, with Hajime and Mahiru specifically bringing up how Chiaki's AI exhibited the capacity for change like a regular person.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:IA Chiaki]]
!!Chiaki Fujisaki
Also known as AI Chiaki. She's rebuilt over a year after the end of the Killing School Trip, in ''Expansion Pack'', and changes her surname to avoid confusion.
----
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: A prime difference between her and Chiaki N.? She gets lost in her head a lot more, so her narration is spacier.
* DueToTheDead: To avoid the problem of having the same first and last name as the protagonist, she takes the surname "Fujisaki" to honor her father.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: Downplayed. She was rebooted in the same generation as her friends, but finds the differences between the ones she knew and the ones who've had over a year to grow dizzying.
* GamerChick: She's based off the original Ultimate Gamer; of course she loves games. She decides, though, that her love of games is ''hers'' and not just something she was programmed with.
* NiceGirl: While she feels pushed aside by Chiaki N. and lost with her friends having grown up, she doesn't let it affect her relationship with them. She just continues being the same kind person she always was.
* ThePhilosopher: She and the World Destroyer have several conversations on what constitutes personhood and whether they're ''really'' alive. [[spoiler:They come to the conclusion that they are, and even if they weren't, their friends think they are. That's enough for them.]]
* ReplacementGoldfish: She struggles with feelings like this; her nature was to be a blank-slate that would become Class 77's ideal person, and the one they had in mind was the class rep they thought dead. As if having the appearance, personality, and name of another girl so she could be her substitute wasn't enough, she's revived to find that said girl is still alive and with everyone.
* RobotGirl: [[spoiler:Kazuichi builds robot bodies for the AIs; Usami declines and Alter Ego can't leave the Neo World Program, but she and the World Destroyer accept, and are able to enter the outside world to be with their friends.]]
* {{Sleepyhead}}: She doesn't doze off as much as she used to, but still has and enjoys a good nap.
* VerbalTic: She ends her sentences with "I think", a difference from Chiaki N.
