->''"You give corruption far too much credit, evil does not inform good. It sullies it, like the Babari sullied their world with violence, and that arrogant [[Characters/DragonBallSonGoku Goku]] sullied this sacred ground by swinging his fists at a god. Mortals receive the divine gift of intellect, the potential for wisdom, but they misuse it to destroy the beauty of creation. Mortals do not succumb to evil, they are the evil. They create it, and spread it with minds they shouldn't possess. How can we call ourselves gods if we watch this plight and do nothing to stop it?"''

A Kai noted as a prodigy and apprentice to the Supreme Kai of [[Characters/DragonBallUniverse10 Universe 10]], Gowasu, Zamasu is first introduced undergoing training to take up the mantle of Supreme Kai in his universe. He has a strong distrust towards mortals, seeing them as violent and corrupt. He also has a strong distrust towards his fellow Kais, seeing them as too lazy for not interfering with mortal affairs. He is in some way connected to [[Characters/DragonBallGokuBlack Goku Black]], the evil entity from Future Trunks' timeline.

According to the ''Super'' manga, he was the North Kai of Universe 10 before his promotion.

[[folder:General]]
* TheAce:
** In the anime, he went from a lower Kai to being trained to become a [[TopGod Supreme Kai]] because of his prodigious talent. While the strongest Supreme Kai in Universe 7 was only as strong as Kid Buu when he was reasonably old, Zamasu has enough potential to match Super Saiyan 2 Goku post-Godhood. Goku even thinks he can beat Beerus one day; his future counterpart shows some of this potential by matching SSB Goku in a fight.
** In the manga, this is downplayed, as the stronger future version of Zamasu is only about on par with Super Saiyan 1 Goku instead, but Goku still notes his potential, and getting even to that level is very impressive for a recently-made Supreme Kai. Shin in the manga also notes that, even if they were to gather all of the remaining Supreme Kais from every universe, none of them would be able to match Zamasu's skills (though he mentions nothing about power). Considering that Zamasu is still in training from being promoted from North Kai to Supreme Kai of Universe 10, that is high praise indeed. Zamasu as the regular North Kai is also shown to be slightly stronger than Kibito, meaning that even before he trains to become stronger in the future he is ''thousands'' of times stronger than a regular Kai, hinting at his potential.
* AdaptationalHeroism: Downplayed but notable. In ''Xenoverse 2'', despite the Time Patroller tricking Zamasu into training them by pretending to be a supporter for his cause and kicking his ass with his own moves after Zamasu finds out and tries to murder them, one would think that a [[GrandTheftMe similar situation as to what transpired between him and Goku]] would take place. But surprisingly, ''no''. Although he's obviously upset by the colossal blow to his megalomaniacal ego, he surprisingly decides to let the matter go. Considering how when Goku bested him [[AxCrazy he went completely off his fucking gourd and served up a]] GrandTheftMe [[AxCrazy with a side of mass murder]], it's indeed quite a shocking event.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Despite being ANaziByAnyOtherName, he's actually pretty chill as a mentor in ''Xenoverse 2''. It's even to the point where he admits to respecting the Future Warrior, who, mind you, is a mortal.
* AlasPoorVillain: While he ultimately became a genocidal lunatic who needed to be stopped, Zamasu's downfall is treated somewhat tragically [[YouCouldHaveUsedYourPowersForGood if only for the sheer waste of potential.]] Gowasu laments his pupils fate and blames himself for not being able to temper his flaws. During the final battle, he also discusses with Shin about Zamasu's slipping mental state and expresses the belief that he [[AndThenWhat would likely find himself quickly regretting his actions if he actually succeeded.]]
* AllForNothing: His Project Zero Mortals would have ultimately turned out to be nothing more than a ShaggyDogStory regardless because even if he did manage to kill the heroes and gain his perfect world he would have attracted the ire of Zeno. Something that [[spoiler:Infinite Zamasu bore the full brunt of in the end]].
* AlternateSelf:
** There are three versions of him, helpfully illustrated [[https://i.imgur.com/v4cgG4T.png here.]] First is the altered main timeline version, [[spoiler:killed by Beerus]]. Then there is the future timeline version, Goku Black's collaborator. And finally there's another alternate version of him, [[spoiler:the original present Zamasu who became Goku Black, due to a wish on the Super Dragon Balls and the Time Ring protecting him from Beerus altering the flow of time]].
** Taken to the extreme in ''Dragon Ball Fusions'' where Goku Black and Future Zamasu manage to summon even more Zamasus to join the fight (two more Zamasus, two more Goku Blacks, along with the Present Zamasu before he became Goku Black), totaling an additional 5 Zamasus altogether.
* AlwaysABiggerFish: For all his talk of being the supreme being, Zamasu forgot that there is one who is stronger than him: Zeno. And when he does realize this, he is completely overcome with fear before being erased.
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: His view on mortals. He firmly believes that all mortals are inherently evil and need to be wiped out so the universe can be at peace.
* AmbiguousSituation: He is the prime suspect for Black's true identity, but several factors rule out his present self being the culprit. The two have similar ki, but Black's is far more evil. Black also knows Goku to some extent, while Zamasu hadn't met Goku prior to their sparring match. Beerus considers that Zamasu could eventually become Black, given the time-travel issues. Goku vouches for his character and doesn't see how the two could be the same person, but Beerus counters that Goku is just too trusting, which is supported by Zamasu's continued path towards darkness. TheReveal shows that Zamasu and Black are indeed the same being, however, due to Zamasu's constant meddling with time travel, multiple versions of him exist. Black is the present Zamasu before the flow of time got changed, protected from being erased with the change thanks to his Time Ring, and he succeeded in his plan to [[GrandTheftMe switch bodies]] with Goku.
* AmbiguousStartOfDarkness: It's not clear whether Zamasu was a bad person waiting for an opportunity to act on his plans before he's introduced, or was simply morally conflicted. He already shows disdain for mortals, and Future Zamasu doesn't hesitate to join Goku Black [[FinalSolution in his Zero Mortals Plan]] when learning he's [[AlternateSelf an alternate self]]; however, his interactions with Goku clearly show him SlowlySlippingIntoEvil. The manga adaptation avoids any ambiguity thanks to Zamasu never meeting Goku in the present, [[AdaptationalJerkass portraying him]] as a BitchInSheepsClothing from the start.
* ArchEnemy:
** He views Goku as one. He bears special hatred towards Goku among all other mortals for daring to challenge the gods and rivaling their power. Him meeting Goku causes his StartOfDarkness and leads him to become a KnightTemplar, where an alternative version of Present Zamasu ends up stealing Goku's body, becoming Goku Black, and then murders him along with his family. Once Goku learns that last part, the hate becomes mutual.
** Also to Future Trunks. While it's most prevalent in his Goku Black side, virtually all Zamasus despise Trunks, labeling him a "sinner" due to repeatedly breaking the taboo of the gods by time travelling and changing history. Trunks is even flatly told his time traveling [[CreateYourOwnVillain was responsible for Zamasu carrying out his "Project Zero Mortals"]] to begin with. It was no accident that Trunks' timeline was targeted, with the Earth given special treatment to prolong Trunks' punishment. Hence the hatred between Zamasu and Trunks is very personal, with Trunks even delivering the final blow to Fused Zamasu with his Sword of Hope.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: He was originally a lower Kai similar to King Kai, but his fighting power was so outstanding that he's being trained as a Supreme Kai by Gowasu. Just before they head off to observed Planet Babari in the future, Gowasu promotes him to a full-fledged Supreme Kai, although it is only temporary since only a Supreme Kai can use the Time Ring. Zamasu, however, is a bit of a {{Deconstruction}} of this trope. As Whis in the ''Super'' manga puts it, Gowasu should have chosen his successor based on their compassion and not just based on their fighting strength.
* AxCrazy:
** Unlike his present counterpart, Future Zamasu is evidently unhinged, expressing borderline sadistic glee at the thought of killing Goku, and in the thick of battle his previously stoic demeanor is replaced with a SlasherSmile.
** The second time the heroes visit him, Present Zamasu is shown to have hit this territory, trying to kill Gowasu with a sadistic smirk and then trying to kill Goku, ''right in front of Beerus''.
* BerserkButton: Being called a sinner. Doing so results in him flying into a rage and him shouting that mortals are far worse than him. When Trunks calls both Goku Black and Future Zamasu murderers, they both get angry and declare he's done worse than they by going back in time and saving Goku's life from the heart disease and creating two seperate timelines.
* BeyondRedemption: Zamasu is initially a well-meaning Supreme Kai, but soon ends up JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope, becoming an AxCrazy KnightTemplar who's willing to commit genocide and mass murder in the name of his idea of justice. Gowasu still tries to reach out to him, even after finding out about the atrocities Zamasu has committed in Future Trunks' timeline and seeing the results with his own eyes, pleading with him to use the Super Dragon Balls to fix the damage he's done. In response, Zamasu smugly reveals that he and Goku Black destroyed the Super Dragon Balls to prevent anyone from using them against them, and try to kill Gowasu on the spot; it's this that finally forces Gowasu to acknowledge that Zamasu is beyond reason and has to be stopped.
* BigBad: All the Zamasus in general are the main threats of the Future Trunks Saga. However it is the Goku Black version of Zamasu who is the true mastermind, being directly responsible for all of the tragic events that occur in the saga.
* BigBadSlippage: Zamasu goes from a well-meaning, somewhat naive Supreme Kai in training to an AxCrazy, sadistic [[TheSociopath sociopath]] who is willing to commit mass-murder and genocide to promote his brand of "justice". The Zamasu who becomes Goku Black becomes a [[ChallengeSeeker thrill seeking]] BloodKnight who is obsessed with growing stronger, all because he [[TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody took the body of a Saiyan.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing:
** After his StartOfDarkness, Zamasu keeps up the act of being a loyal apprentice to Gowasu, while planning to kill him and steal the Time Rings in order to enact his plans of mortal genocide across TheMultiverse.
** In the manga, it's [[AdaptationalJerkass even more blatant]]. While Zamasu in the anime starts out as a well-meaning Kai who has a very strict sense of justice and a strong distrust towards mortals, manga Zamasu was always a jerk since he wanted to kill mortals from the start, seeing them as unneeded beings. Unlike the anime version who [[SlowlySlippingIntoEvil slowly slipped into evil]] through a series of events, manga Zamasu gets triggered just seeing powerful mortals, doesn't even ''meet'' Goku personally before [[spoiler:deciding to steal his body]], and decides [[spoiler:to kill his master and commit mass genocide]].
* BlackAndWhiteInsanity: This is his primary problem. He has a very black and white view of mortals and gods. Namely, mortals are evil and need to be cleansed, while the gods are good, but are too [[TheGodsMustBeLazy lazy]] for not taking care of the mortals. His inability to understand that mortals can learn and grow, and the gods themselves are also [[GodIsFlawed flawed]] and need to learn from their mistakes, is a point of tension between Gowasu and him. [[spoiler:Just before he kills Gowasu so he can set in motion his plans to destroy all the mortals, he does admit that his actions are evil, [[NecessarilyEvil but through them will come a greater good.]] He gets even worse when he comes to believe that everyone, gods and mortals alike, are not worthy of living in "his" Multiverse and that the only flawless creature is just himself.]]
* BreakoutVillain: Along with his partner [[spoiler:and alternate self]] Goku Black, Zamasu has made numerous appearances since his debut, with at least one incarnation appearing in some form or another.
* BrilliantButLazy: He did have the potential to become a truly strong fighter if he had put in the effort and time, but he would rather take shortcuts to reach a high level [[spoiler:such as murdering his mentor to become Supreme Kai, stealing Goku’s body to take the Saiyan’s limitless power for himself, wishing himself to be completely invincible, and Potara Fusion]].
* BrokenAce: He was promoted from a lower Kai to a Supreme Kai apprentice because of his prodigious talent, and Goku even theorizes he may rival Beerus himself one day... but he suffers from BlackAndWhiteInsanity and simply ''cannot'' comprehend the idea that the gods are flawed and mortals aren't AlwaysChaoticEvil.
* BullyingADragon: Zamasu seems to be under the impression that he can go off on {{Motive Rant}}s and dish out insults and disparaging comments about mortals like the Z-Fighters as much as he likes, and said mortals will just sit there and cry about it. Instead, his insults and ranting are met with retaliation, as should be expected when you insult someone who can and ''will'' fight back.
* CanonName: '''Zamasu''' in the anime and '''Zamas''' in the manga.
* CastingGag: In the dub, Zamasu is voiced by Creator/JamesMarsters, who previously played another green-skinned ''Dragon Ball'' villain, specifically King Piccolo in the reviled live-action adaptation ''Film/DragonBallEvolution''. This is in fact intentional on Marsters part, who agreed to return to work on the anime ''without pay'', in order to atone for his previous role in the eyes of the ''Dragon Ball'' community.
* CatchPhrase: He can hardly go one sentence without saying "justice" or some variation of it in a sentence. The phrase he mostly uses is "Kami no seigi", which means "The justice of the gods." [[ItsAllAboutMe Since this is Zamasu we are talking about, he mostly means "his justice".]]
* TheChessmaster: Used the Super Dragon Balls to [[spoiler:wish for immortality while another version of Zamasu used them to swap bodies with Goku. They then wreaked havoc in Future Trunks' timeline]].
* TheComicallySerious: All of the Zamasus, [[spoiler:outside of Black]], fall into this. They are all serious characters who truly believe what they preach and will go into {{Motive Rant}}s. However, since this is ''Dragon Ball'', no one outside of Gowasu is willing to hear or even humor his beliefs. Which leads to characters [[ShutUpHannibal punching Zamasu]] or just straight up ignoring him when he talks about why mortals are evil.
* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: Zamasu is the first ''Dragon Ball'' antagonist to be a KnightTemplar, who believes what he is doing is for the greater good, in his own [[MoralMyopia distorted morality]]. He's also the first antagonist who didn't begin as a villain, but gradually [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope descended into darkness]] over the course of a season. He's also the antagonist who has the most lasting consequences to the story, [[spoiler:having TheMultiverse of a whole timeline wiped of life.]]
** He's also the first villain that gets close to being a TragicVillain. He boils down to the divine equivalent of troubled youth. Gowasu seems to think he could have been saved if he (Gowasu) had been a better mentor. Similarly he's the only villain that anyone actually mourns over.
** He's specifically one to Perfect Cell, the previously most prominent time-traveling villain. Just like Cell, Zamasu is a FinalExamBoss who references every major antagonist that preceeds him. Unlike Cell, Zamasu relies on magic rather than technology, and only stole Goku's body out of petty spite rather than needing someone else to be "perfect."
* CorruptedCharacterCopy: Zamasu is one for [[Characters/GundamCharAznable Char Aznable]], more specifically the ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamCharsCounterattack Char's Counterattack]]'' iteration. Char's growing cynicism over humanity's capacity for conflict ultimately compelled him to attempt to drop an asteroid into Earth to force mankind to migrate into space so they can evolve into Newtypes; while Char at his core is hypocritical and manipulative, his intentions remain questionable at best as this was his only way of preventing more conflicts from happening. Zamasu begins to question why mortals have the capacity for evil and why they have squandered the life and wisdom given to them by the gods, and even questioned the gods' refusal to be involved with the affairs of the mortal realm. Zamasu's own growing cynicism over mortals ultimately led to him enacting his Zero Mortals Plan, to the point of attempting genocide and deicide on a multiversal scale. Then, there's Zamasu's personal grudge towards Goku, his defeat at the hands of the Saiyan would ultimately be the final push to his descent into madness. Of all the other Char Clones, Zamasu's endgame is evocative that of [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED Rau Le Creuset]].
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Future Trunks' timeline shows that Zamasu would have continued to serve Gowasu despite his grudge against mortals for many years. His present self learning about Goku's god-surpassing power pushed him to start planning the genocide of both gods and mortals, starting with [[spoiler:taking Goku's body by using the Super Dragon Balls.]] However, once [[spoiler:Future Zamasu enters the picture and we discover that he [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope almost immediately jumped on-board with Goku Black's plans]]]], it quickly becomes apparent that there was already something rotten inside Zamasu long before he ever knew who Goku was; even if Goku hadn't triggered his StartOfDarkness, something similar would have happened eventually. However, this still counts as an example, because [[spoiler:without Goku's body to steal, Zamasu would be too weak to accomplish his goals, something Goku himself points out.]]
* CutLexLuthorACheck: Not once but twice, Zamasu accesses the Super Dragon Balls, which are known to able to grant any wish with no known limits whatsoever. With omnipotent power at his disposal, he could have simply wished for all mortals to be popped out of existence, but instead, he first uses them to perform a FreakyFridayFlip with the mortal Saiyan who surpassed him in power, then uses them for CompleteImmortality in the Trunks' future timeline. This ultimately reveals that Zamasu's pretensions of caring about justice are little more than a smokescreen to rationalize his violent hatred of mortals and his desire to personally punish them for their supposed sins.
* DarkMessiah: [[spoiler:What he eventually becomes in two timelines. Future Zamasu helps Goku Black (who is Present Zamasu of an alternative timeline possessing Goku's body) to destroy all mortals to create a paradise. In his MotiveRant to Future Trunks, he calls mortals stupid and foolish for misusing the knowledge given to them by the gods. Many of his actions have messianic qualities, but they are undercut by his supreme narcissism and delusions of grandeur. He's basically if Satan ''thought'' he was the messiah]].
* TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget: Originally, Zamasu just wanted the gods to be more involved with mortal affairs so they would stop misusing the knowledge given to them by the gods. At worst, he wanted the gods to stop protecting mortals since [[HumansAreBastards they're not worth it]]. After he meets and fights Goku, however, he goes off the deep end and decides that mortals are foolish ''and'' dangerous and need to be destroyed along with the "useless" gods who allow mortals to live for the peace of the universe. To that end, [[spoiler:he kills his own master, steals his Time Ring, uses the Super Dragon Balls to take Goku's body, and murders him and his family out of spite. By the time Zamasu (now Goku Black) reaches Earth, he wipes out all the gods in the future timeline, is clearly insane, and sees himself as the one true god of the multiverse along with Future Zamasu]]. Whatever nobility he may have had in his goals is long gone.
* DeaderThanDead: [[spoiler:This is the fate of all versions of Zamasu, as Present Zamasu was destroyed by Beerus, while Future Zamasu and Goku Black are wiped from existence by Future Zeno when he destroys the future timeline since Fused Zamasu (the fusion of Future Zamasu and Black) became one with the multiverse.]]
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: From the ''Super'' manga, it shows why choosing a successor based on AsskickingLeadsToLeadership isn't always a good idea. As Whis puts it, Gowasu should have chosen his successor based on their compassion and not just based on their fighting strength. In the case of the anime, Zamasu demonstrates why having a pure heart and a strong sense of justice are ''[[PureIsNotGood not]]'' good things to have if you're so set in your belief that you can't even [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity consider the possibility of being wrong]].
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: Completely averted. In fact Zamasu's defeat that causes his StartOfDarkness, which is a big deal considering how reliant ''Dragon Ball'' is on this trope. After being beaten in a sparring match by Son Goku, Zamasu makes it his mission to kill him and any other mortal that could rival his power.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Zamasu's [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity extremist view of mortals]] led him to transcend into a KnightTemplar. As his disgust for the mortals grew, so did his urge to eliminate them from existence. Eventually, Zamasu abandons the Kais' non-intervention philosophy and takes an active role in eliminating all mortals from the lower realms.
* DependingOnTheArtist:
** How the anime (and Toriyama's outline) portrays Zamasu's body figure is quite different, with him being a lean [[{{Bishonen}} pretty boy]], while Creator/{{Toyotaro}} draws him quite muscular in the manga. This even extends to the facial expressions, with the anime smiles being more subtle, only going to the extreme when Zamasu's mental state grows worse, while the manga are full blown [[SlasherSmile slasher and villainous]] with any evil act. ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse2'' model is based on the anime, with Zamasu being leaner than Goku Black, while the manga portray both with a similar muscular figure.
** In the anime, Present and Future Zamasu are drawn slightly differently in the facial area. Present Zamasu has softer expressions and his eyes are more TaremeEyes. Future Zamasu has more hardened features and his eyes are TsurimeEyes. Overall, Future Zamasu looks older than Present Zamasu, although it's subtle. The manga draws Present and Future Zamasu the same.
* DependingOnTheWriter: How the anime and the manga portray Zamasu and Goku Black's personalities are quite different in both versions. In a nutshell, the manga versions of Zamasu and Goku Black are written like typical Toriyama's villains from ''Dragon Ball Z''. They're arrogant when ahead, have a VillainousBreakdown when things don't go they way, and do evil acts because [[CardCarryingVillain they enjoy it]]. In the anime, both Zamasu and Goku Black kept it together even when briefly pushed, while arrogant they're [[NoNonsenseNemesis no-nonsense]] enough to know when to get serious, and while cruel and sadistic they think their [[KnightTemplar evil acts are completely justified]].
* DirtyCoward: Only one person frightens Zamasu: Zen-O. When Future Zen-O appears and begins erasing the entire future timeline, Zamasu screams in fear and tries to run away, only to get erased along with everything else.
* DisproportionateRetribution: When you look at it, the entirety of all the bad things in the Future Trunks Saga [[spoiler:happened [[SoreLoser because he wanted to get back at Goku for losing in a simple sparring match]] against him]]. Talk about a SoreLoser. It's even ''worse'' in the manga where [[spoiler:he never even ''meets'' Goku. He just sees his fight with Hit on [=GodTube=] and becomes furious at the idea of a mortal rising to the power of a god]].
* DivinelyAppearingDemons: As a SatanicArchetype and FallenAngel, he has the divine and godly appearance of Supreme Kai, especially as Fused Zamasu, but [[LightIsNotGood he is not good]].
* EarlyBirdCameo: Appears in the Future Trunks Saga's intro several episodes before he makes his debut.
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** In the manga, he is utterly repulsed by the idea of having to use Mai, a mortal, as a meatshield to save himself from Goku's Hakai technique.
** In ''Xenoverse 2'', as a mentor, while he still hates mortals, he considers denizens of the Demon Realm truly evil. He regards demons in an even lower light and is willing to set aside his Project Zero Mortals to deal with them.
* EvilAllAlong: [[AdaptationalJerkass In the manga]]. Whereas Zamasu ended up SlowlySlippingIntoEvil in the anime, the manga makes it clear his genocidal hatred of mortals was present from the start, and he was always a [[ANaziByAnyOtherName racist monster]] just waiting for an opportunity.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: He's firmly convinced that all mortal life is AlwaysChaoticEvil and [[FinalSolution must be eradicated]] for the good of the universe. While he ''does'' [[JerkassHasAPoint make several good points]] about how [[TheGodsMustBeLazy the gods' no-intervention policy allows evil mortals to get away with all manner of atrocities]], Zamasu's FatalFlaw is that he's [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity incapable of understanding]] that while the mortals ''are'' flawed, they can still learn and grow from their mistakes, and [[GodIsFlawed that the gods themselves can be just as fallible]].
* EvilCounterpart:
** Originally the North Kai of U10, he's one to Goku's master King Kai. A flashback in the manga shows that he also lived in a little brick house on a BabyPlanet, with a winged pig as a pet instead of a monkey.
** To Goku. Both are incredibly powerful fighters, and both are prodigy’s that surpass their respective masters, but that's where the similarities end. Goku is a mortal who ended up attaining the powers of a god, while Zamasu is a god who took the form of a mortal. While Goku became stronger than his mentors due to his training, Zamasu kills his master to become the Supreme Kai and use the Super Dragon Balls to achieve [[CompleteImmortality immortality]] and [[GrandTheftMe steal Goku’s body]]. Their paths are also different, Goku came from a warrior race that was violent, aggressive and hellbent on conquering other planets and the universe, but Goku chose to protect his friends, his family, and the universe from dangerous threats, Zamasu on the other hand is a Kai, a race that was supposed to be protecting the universe and all living things but became evil due to his hatred for mortals and goes on to commit genocide killing his fellow Kais and plans to kill all mortals from the face of the universe.
** In several ways, he is one to Vegeta, being a powerful being who took pride in his own natural talent, and [[spoiler:taking extreme offense when Goku comes along and reveals to them that he's their better]]. However, Vegeta eventually moves along from his grudge and the competition becomes more playful among them. Zamasu however, [[spoiler:doesn't get over it and his hatred for Goku for besting him boils over big time, leading him onto a genocidal rampage, in one timeline stealing Goku's body and killing him and his family out of simple wounded pride and spite]].
** He's also this to Future Trunks. Both come from universes apart from the one the heroes are used too, both witnessed devastation, and both favor blade techniques (Trunks' CoolSword and Zamasu's [[LaserBlade God Split Cut]]). But while Trunks became a hero, Zamasu gives into his hatred for mortals and plans a FinalSolution. It becomes even more distinct in his Goku Black incarnation, see the EvilCounterpart entry on the Characters/DragonBallGokuBlack page for more details.
** Toriyama and Toyotaro noticed in their interview that Zamasu is also one to the Supreme Kai, Shin. Is not that far off, Shin was a victim of Majin Buu's rampage, and was incompletely trained and put into the Supreme Kai job, while Zamasu was TheAce among the shinjin, and due to his twisted sense of morality, killed off his master to become a Supreme Kai. Further, Shin's defining characteristic as a god is his hands-off approach to governing the universe, while Zamasu decides to kill every single mortal '''personally'''. This is especially noticeable in the manga version.
--> '''Toriyama:''' At his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired.
* EvilGloating: ''Constantly''. The guy loves to talk and will just not shut up about how divine he is and how mortals should know their place and how he can't be beaten. Future Zamasu eventually admits that he doesn't actually care if anyone listens to his gloating; he does it because he likes hearing himself talk. [[spoiler: By the time he merges with Goku Black and Vegito enters the fight, the latter has gotten so sick of his speeches that [[ShutUpHannibal he instantly punches him as he's trying to deliver another one]].]]
* EvilIsPetty: His entire grudge against Goku boils down to him being mad that a mortal is stronger than him. [[spoiler: The original present Zamasu (who wasn't killed by Beerus), takes it so far as to take Goku's body using the Super Dragon Balls and kills him along with his family with it purely out of spite. Future Zamasu is probably worse since he never even met Goku until the latter's trip to the future, yet he hates him because he's a mortal that dares to defy the gods. Which is [[{{Hypocrite}} hypocritical]] since Goku Black and he murdered all the gods in the future timeline as well to make themselves the only gods]].
** In the manga, Goku (not mockingly, but rather earnestly) points out that Future Zamasu alone is far weaker than Trunks and wouldn't even require his and Vegeta's intervention if his alternate self hadn't stolen another Goku's body. This sets him off so much that, after fusing with his alternate self and becoming the nigh-unbeatable Fused Zamasu, he still feels the need to rub the comment in Goku's face. "Who's weaker than Trunks now!?".
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: This is especially true of Present Zamasu. He looks like an older version of Shin with [[{{Bishonen}} pretty boy features]]. He even looks downright innocent when serving tea to Gowasu in Episode 53. That is before he suffered SanitySlippage after meeting Goku who shattered his world. After that encounter, he [[StartOfDarkness began his fall to the dark side]].
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:All versions of Zamasu. They all started off as simply being distrustful of mortals, before descending into {{Knight Templar}}s willing to actively wipe them out]].
** In the present, Zamasu goes through this trope [[spoiler:by storming into Zuno's palace and threatening him in order to learn more about Goku and the Super Dragon Balls. He then tries to murder Gowasu to gain control of the Time Ring. The original present Zamasu who wasn't stopped by Beerus succeeds in killing Gowasu, takes the Time Ring, uses the Super Dragon Balls to steal Goku's body, and then proceeds to murder him and his family, ''using his own body'']].
** Future Zamasu [[spoiler:was at first horrified when he saw Goku Black kill his master, but then willingly joined him when he realized who Black was and actively assists him in killing all mortals.]]
* FallenAngel: [[spoiler:He becomes a fallen Supreme Kai due to his genocidal ambitions and need to create a 'perfect' world without mortals.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: [[spoiler: All incarnations of Zamasu hit this territory when they finally go off the deep end, speaking as formally and politely as always yet it's clear that they have nothing but contempt and murderous hatred mixed into a cocktail of delusion.]]
* FantasticRacism: He really dislikes mortals, seeing them as dangerous since they keep repeating the same mistakes and fighting pointless wars. [[spoiler:It eventually reaches the point where Future Zamasu teams up with Goku Black (who is in fact present Zamasu) to eliminate all mortals.]]
--> '''Zamasu:''' Among the mortals, there are the Saiyans, Namekians, Majins, and the Frieza clan. Despite such diversity, mortals are nothing but mindless cretins.
** Unsurprisingly, he is also not fond of denizens who belong to the Demon Realm, as ''Xenoverse 2'' can attest to in a Quest. At the very least, demons count as mortals too. At most, it's implied those of the Demon Realm are in fact evil Core People, the pure opposite of the Kais.
--> '''Dabura:''' A Kai? Or rather, a Supreme Kai in training, yes? I rather detest your kind.
--> '''Zamasu:''' A denizen of the Demon Realm... how '''repulsive'''.
* FatalFlaw: Pride and Narcissism. Ultimately, he views himself as a 'perfect god' who knows better than everyone else, thus he can't understand the idea that he's flawed and needs to grow, so he can't understand Gowasu's mentality that mortals are flawed but can become greater if time is taken to nurture them. [[spoiler: This is ultimately the entire cause of his fall to evil and everything that happens]].
* FeelingOppressedByTheirExistence: This is how all versions of Zamasu come to feel about all mortal life.
* TheFightingNarcissist: All of them are textbook cases of malignant narcissism syndrome. In fact, their ''entire'' StartOfDarkness amounts to them having flown into a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissistic_rage_and_narcissistic_injury narcissistic rage]] when Goku bruised their egos in that sparring match by showing a mortal could be stronger than he is, directly or indirectly.
* FinalSolution: When he hears about the new race of mortals on Planet Babari who are extremely primitive and violent, he suggests wiping them out to prevent the problem from escalating. This shocks Gowasu since that is the role of the Destroyers, not the Kais. He later takes it a step further and suggests that ''all'' mortals be cleansed for the good of the multiverse. [[spoiler: Future Zamasu makes good on this belief, helping Goku Black (who is also Zamasu) cleanse the alternate future timeline in a plan they dub 'Project Zero Mortals']].
* FinalExamBoss: Just like Cell before him, Zamasu is a mashup of every previous major antagonist in the series, but thematically rather than literally. He's a green-skinned SatanicArchetype like Piccolo who made a wish on the Dragon Balls to extend his lifespan, only to kill the dragon afterwards so no one could take it from him. He's as arrogant, condescending and cruel as Vegeta and as Goku Black and Fused Zamasu is also a Saiyan. Like Frieza he's a planet destroying {{Sadist}} and ImmortalitySeeker, but unlike Frieza he pulled it off. [[spoiler:As Goku Black, he swaps bodies with Goku like Captain Ginyu did, but whereas Ginyu left Goku to suffer in his severely wounded body, Zamasu killed Goku after the body swap was a success.]] He's driven entirely by hatred for mortals caused by Son Goku like Doctor Gero. Future Zamasu and Goku Black are an inseparable EvilDuo that fight as a pair just like Future 17 and Future 18. His plans revolve around time travel like Cell and his end goals were just as omnicidal. Lastly, like Super Buu, his strongest form is a fusion of two versions of [[spoiler:himself]], but whereas Super Buu was the result of Evil Buu forcefully absorbing Fat Buu, [[spoiler:Fused Zamasu is the result of Goku Black and Future Zamasu willingly fusing together]].
* {{Foil}}:
** To Frieza. Both Frieza and Zamasu are xenophobic mass murderers who enjoy killing anyone they come across. The only difference is that Frieza was raised to be a tyrant who merely took over worlds and killed anyone who defied him while sparing those he viewed as powerful, having no delusion over his morality and knowing fully well that he's evil to the core. Zamasu was raised to be a Kai, but his prejudice against mortals and his hatred for his fellow Kais' "laziness" made him carry out his own brand of justice. Which is basically, "Zamasu is good, everyone else is bad." He’s also an OmnicidalManiac who kills all the mortals and even Gods he comes across and eventually tried to destroy the entire multiverse itself.
** To Cell, especially the Goku Black incarnation. Both are villains who traversed time and have multiple AlternateTimeline versions existing, both caused trouble for Future Trunks who played a part in [[CreateYourOwnVillain creating them]], both sought to become the UltimateLifeform, and both had their purpose in life to kill Goku. The difference, however, is Cell is from the future and went to the past, while Zamasu travelled from the past to cause trouble in the future. In addition, Cell was engineered to be evil, while Zamasu was raised to be a force for good and ended up [[FallenHero falling to evil]].
** To Majin Buu. Both are characters who have multiple incarnations and forms (one of them being a fusion) and both were an existential threat to all life in the universe. But, while Buu was always a EldritchAbomination whose various selves never got along, Zamasu was originally a normal Kai whose various selves actually get along and work together (in the anime at least). In addition, Buu kills and destroys for nothing more than fun and never claims otherwise. Zamasu claims that the death and destruction he's causing is all for a greater good, but his motives are ultimately [[ItsAllAboutMe selfish]] and he's clearly enjoying inflicting his "punishment" on Future Trunks.
* ForGreatJustice: Everything that he does and his beliefs in justice are taken to extreme levels, he believes a world without mortals will create the ideal world for gods. In other words, for himself only.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: He started out as a regular Kai, not a ''Supreme Kai'', a Kai, like King Kai. Despite being a prodigy, he was still weaker than Super Saiyan 2 Goku. By the end of the Future Trunks Saga [[spoiler: his various incarnations have not only performed genocide on the rest of the gods in the ''multiverse'', but have wiped out life on multiple worlds with their genocide of Earth just being their latest stop. His various incarnations also grew so strong that they could challenged and even surpassed Goku and Vegeta at their strongest with Fusion Zamasu needing ''Vegito'' for the Z-fighters to counter him, and that still wasn't enough to finish him off. By the very end of it all, he becomes an EldritchAbomination that [[GeniusLoci infects and becomes]] the entirety of the Future Trunks's multiverse and kills every living thing there, and would have started moving on to other timelines as well had [[TopGod Zeno]] not completely erased that multiverse]].
* GodhoodSeeker: A variant. While he is already a legitimate PhysicalGod, he desired to become the TopGod and then reenact his "Zero Mortals Plan" to achieve his envisioned utopia for the multiverse. He does so by using the Super Dragon Balls to steal the body of Goku and becoming Goku Black, before travelling to an AlternateTimeline where he teams up with his future self who they use the Super Dragon Balls to wish for immortality for this Zamasu. This EvilDuo then proceeds to lay waste to the universe. Later on, the two of them [[FusionDance fuse together]] to form an UltimateLifeform.
* GodIsEvil: He's an apprentice Supreme Kai, and one of the evilest characters in the series.
* GodIsFlawed: One of his biggest problems is that he believes this is ''{{averted}}''. While he wholeheartedly believes that [[HumansAreFlawed mortals constantly repeat the same mistakes time and again]], he also doesn't agree with his master Gowasu in that the gods can also make mistakes and in some ways are even more flawed. More importantly, this aversion blinds him to the fact the ''he'' is no exception to the rule either, [[spoiler:and it eventually leads him to conclude that while the gods have made mistakes, it is up to him, who recognizes that, to fix them [[KnightTemplar by whatever means necessary, including murdering mortals and gods alike]]]]. By the end of it, Zamasu comes to believe that everyone but '''himself''' is flawed.
* TheGodsMustBeLazy: His view on the Kais' [[AlienNonInterferenceClause non-interference policy in regards to mortals]]. Since [[HumansAreFlawed mortals never seem to learn their lessons and keep making the same mistakes]], Zamasu believes that said policy actually hurts TheMultiverse. Eventually, he decides to stop being lazy, and do what he feels is necessary to protect the universe... by [[spoiler: slaughtering anyone, mortal or god, that gets in his way or interferes with his plans]].
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: While Zamasu has always been distrustful of mortals since he finds them TooDumbToLive, what sends him on his StartOfDarkness was his sparring match with Goku. That simple match showed Zamasu that mortals can obtain power that rivals or even surpasses the gods. He becomes even more crazy in the manga when he sees Goku with Godly Ki on Godtube.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Goku stated, after their duel, that Zamasu might eventually surpass Beerus himself. After [[spoiler:committing TimeTravel and GrandTheftMe, obtaining CompleteImmortality, using [[FusionDance Potara Fusion]], and finally [[EldritchAbomination becoming one with Future Trunks' multiverse]]]], Zamasu certainly ''did'' surpass Beerus...
* GoodColorsEvilColors: Zamasu is represented by purple, even in the title card during the opening, which is usually the color of an antagonist. He is morally ambiguous since he has a strong distrust of mortals, however, he isn't villainous. Even as he becomes more zealot in his belief that mortals are dangerous and needs to be wipe out for universal peace, he [[VillainCorner doesn't act on it]] outside of killing one of the Babarians, which he did show [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone a moment]] of regret towards. It's not until [[spoiler: Future Zamasu makes his first appearance that Zamasu is confirmed as a major and extremely evil villain]].
* HatesEveryoneEqually: At first, Zamasu merely hated mortals for misusing their knowledge, but then he came to hate the gods as well for not doing anything about mortals. This hate then evolved into him hating pretty much every living creature except himself.
* HateSink: Much like Black, Zamasu in the manga comes off as much less impressive and formidable than his anime version, in addition to making him more petty, condescending, and outright evil, turning an already very malicious character into an outright despicable and pathetic one. The fact that Zamasu's affirmation towards darkness stemmed from ''watching a video of Goku fighting'' is already bad enough, but his much worse track record in fighting and entirely relying on his immortality, alongside his bratty and jerkish behavior even towards Black, really hammers the point of Zamasu in the manga being more hateable than his anime iteration.
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: He starts out a WellIntentionedExtremist who wants to protect the universe from the constant cycle of mortals fighting wars and destroying each other, but [[spoiler: ends up being just as bad, if not even worse than the mortals he sought to protect the universe from. Present Zamasu tries to commit murder against his own master so he can begin his quest to kill all mortals and Future Zamasu is helping Goku Black wreak havoc in Future Trunks' world. Goku Black (who is in fact Present Zamasu) goes as far as to murder Goku's entire family after taking his body and then goes on to kill all the gods in the 12 universes of the future timeline]].
* HiddenDepths:
** Zamasu, compared with other Dragon Ball villains who are shown to be evil to their core, is shown to be a nature lover, even having a hideout in a cabin with a beautiful view.
** In the anime, his motives go further than outright hating mortals for the crime of being mortals, instead being cautious and weary of their actions. He is capable of astute observations and [[HypocriteHasAPoint explaining his beliefs in a manner that's not entirely wrong.]]
* HolierThanThou: He believes that he's more right than his fellow gods since he's willing to do something about the mortals who misuse the knowledge of the gods while they [[TheGodsMustBeLazy sit back and do nothing]]. This includes [[spoiler: murdering his fellow gods since they wouldn't agree with his ideals and would try to stop him]].
* HumansAreBastards: Zamasu believes that mortals are corrupt, violent creatures who are not worth the god's protection since they misused the knowledge given to them by the gods. [[spoiler: It eventually reaches the point that he's willing to commit mass-genocide and murder his own fellow gods to create an utopia free of the corruption of mortals and the mistakes of gods]].
* HumansAreFlawed: His prevailing mindset as to why mortals are AlwaysChaoticEvil. They keep repeating the same mistakes of flourishing and war despite being given knowledge by the gods. In his mind, this makes them not worth the gods' protecting and he later [[spoiler: wants to outright murder them]].
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** He comes off as a colossal one, since he looks down at mortals for using violence to solve their problems instead of the knowledge given to them by the gods. Yet, he saw no problem killing an inhabitant of Planet Babari when he could have simply walked away, as Gowasu points out. He also disagrees with Gowasu about the [[GodIsFlawed gods being flawed]] and that they must also learn from their mistakes, yet he thinks Gowasu and the other Supreme Kais are wrong for not being more involved in mortal affairs, essentially saying that the gods are wrong on this subject. [[spoiler: Future Zamasu takes the hypocrisy further by telling Future Trunks that his hatred of mortals stems from their repeated misuse of the wisdom given to them by the gods. This is coming from the same person who used his great knowledge to destroy countless mortal races across the future timeline. He also despises Goku for being mortal that has the nerve to challenge the gods. This is the ''same'' person who helped Goku Black (who's a god in a mortal shell) murder all the gods in the multiverse]]. By Episode 57, Present Zamasu [[spoiler: is willing to murder his own teacher to further his goals, the exact same type of behavior he looks down upon on mortals for]].
** In a great twist of hypocrisy, while Zamasu believes that mortals are evil; he is [[spoiler: one of the darkest and most evil villains of the entire ''Dragon Ball'' series, and he doesn't even have the excuse of being born that way (like [[TheSociopath Freeza]]) or being created to be that way (like Cell or Majin Buu). Quite the opposite in fact: his species is generally AlwaysLawfulGood as benevolent Gods of Creation, making him stand out even more]].
** His belief the universe needs to be protected from the follies of mortals eventually forms into a mission to eliminate said mortals so that the world can be peaceful for the gods. [[spoiler:In his various incarnations, he completely falls off the deep end and becomes sadistically zealous, relishing in causing great anguish to any who'd challenge his path, even kills all the rest of the gods in the Future timeline to keep them out of his way, repeatedly dubs himself the only necessary god and true arbiter of justice, and even after being bisected for his troubles he irrecoverably poisons the entire multiverse of the future timeline with his hatred to the point the Zen'o himself has to step in and erase the entire multiverse with him along with it.]]
* HypocriteHasAPoint: His idea of dealing with the constant violence and division among mortals is [[FinalSolution to wipe them all out.]] There are indeed many mortal characters, including Frieza and the Babarians, who were able to continue their destructive actions because of the gods' non-intervention clause. Even Gowasu agrees that there is much evil in the hearts of mortals, but he also believes that they have the potential to grow and learn from their mistakes. [[EvilCannotComprehendGood Zamasu finds the latter idea to be incomprehensible.]]
* HypocrisyNod: Zamasu is aware that he's working with a version of himself in the mortal shell of his hated enemy, but finds it necessary. And when they fuse, Zamasu makes it known that by taking Goku's body as his own, he will never forget the failures of both mortals and gods.
* ICanRuleAlone: In addition to killing all the mortals in Future Trunks' timeline, he and Goku Black also kill that timeline's gods, declaring, "One god is all the cosmos needs." Taken a step further in a mission in ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse2'', where [[spoiler:Future Zamasu ends up betraying and trying to kill Goku Black, freely admitting that he sees Black as "just another being entirely" and a "fallen god spoiled by humanity", and was hoping to take him out at the end of the Zero Mortals Plan so he could seize power as the "one true god".]]
* IcyGrayEyes: Possesses distinct gray eyes, and is also a cold, ruthless being whose strong will motivates him to place his "ideas above the people" [[spoiler:to the point he wants to kill all the people so that his ideas can come true]]. And he possesses the power to make it happen.
* InTheirOwnImage: Regardless of all of their {{Motive Rant}}s about justice, it's clear that this is the endgame of each version of Zamasu, Goku Black included; by wiping out all mortal and god life, they'll create ''their'' own vision of paradise.
** It's especially blatant with Goku Black and Future Zamasu; they constantly go on about how they're doing the gods' justice and making a new world "by gods, for gods," and since they're the ''only ones left'', it basically translates to their new world being "by Zamasu, for Zamasu"
** It's made even more clear in the manga, where Fused Zamasu declares that he will kill ''everyone'' in all timelines who ''isn't'' a version of himself, god and mortal alike. [[spoiler:Infinite Zamasu takes this to extremes; by becoming one with the Future Trunks timeline, he succeeded in creating a Multiverse where only Zamasu exists because he ''is'' the Multiverse.]]
* ItsAllAboutMe: All versions of Zamasu. For all their grandiose speeches about justice, it becomes clear at the end of the day that all they care about is ''their'' vision of paradise and don't give a damn about anyone who's ''not'' them, not even their fellow gods who they will and have willfully murdered. In fact, the only reason Goku Black and Future Zamasu get along so well is because ''they're the same person''. They're even more selfish in the manga where Fused Zamasu gleefully declares that he will wipe out anyone that isn't himself across all timelines. [[spoiler: Infinite Zamasu takes this to extremes; by becoming one with Future Trunks' timeline, he succeeded in creating a Multiverse where only Zamasu exists because he ''is'' the Multiverse.]]
* JerkassGods: He's firmly convinced that mortals are all stupid and brutal creatures who never learn from their mistakes and that the gods do nothing about those mistakes, to the extent that he openly suggests just [[FinalSolution wiping them all out]]. Future Zamasu teams up with Goku Black (another Zamasu) to do exactly that. Also, when Present Zamasu raids Zuno's temple, he threatens to kill Zuno if he didn't answer his questions about the Super Dragon Balls and Goku. He even tries to murder his own master for his Potara Earring so he can use the Time Ring and is only stopped due to Whis and Beerus' intervention.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Zamasu's distrust towards mortals does have some good reasoning behind it, and at first glance would make you think that perhaps he may be somewhat justified. But as the whole affair continues and [[spoiler: we see what he would go on to do to Goku and his family]] and the utterly sick enjoyment that he gains both from this event along with his rampage in Future Trunks’ world as well as his declarations of becoming the only god, it's clear that behind the veneer of well-meaning that he conducts himself with, he's a [[AxCrazy sadistic]], [[TheSociopath sociopathic]] [[PoliticallyIncorrectVillain racial supremacist]] that will stop at nothing to satiate his [[AmbitionIsEvil ambitions]], megalomania, and to [[EvilIsPetty endlessly pursue his own personal, sadistically hateful war against Goku and all he cares about]] [[DisproportionateRetribution for beating him in a friendly sparring match.]]
* JusticeWillPrevail: He believes that he will and must succeed in his goals since he is doing the gods justice. Fused Zamasu takes it a step further and declares himself as [[IAmTheNoun justice itself]]. Which is why he is shocked when Future Trunks finds the power to overcome him.
--> '''Fused Zamasu''': How ''dare'' you strike a god?! And retaliate against justice?!
* KnightOfCerebus: In all of his incarnations, particularly Goku Black, Zamasu sticks out as a truly wicked villain. Until Moro, his arc is the only one in ''Super'' played as a straight tension-filled battle story,[[note]]Beerus [[AntiVillain wasn't really a villain]] and didn't even kill anyone on Earth; Freeza was a mass murderer, but was treated lightly by both Goku and Vegeta who could have easily defeated him at any point by teaming up; the U6 tournament competitors were simply an OpposingSportsTeam with no stakes regarding their victory, and aside from Hit were nothing compared to even the second-stringer protagonists; and the participants of the Tournament of Power were all effectively [[HeroAntagonist hero antagonists]] and, with the exceptions of the Pride Troopers, Hit and Kale/Kefla (plus Anilaza in the anime), also irrelevant power-wise compared to the protagonists.[[/note]] and whenever he appears, the mood shifts to an ominous tone.
* KnightTemplar:
** Present Zamasu became one over the course of the season, believing that mortals are [[AlwaysChaoticEvil inherently evil]] and should be wiped out for the good of the universe. He also believes that the Kais only watching over mortals is a sin instead of taking direct action. Before Present Zamasu tries to [[spoiler:kill Gowasu]], he tells his master that he now understands that evil can lead to a greater good.
** [[spoiler: Future Zamasu joins Goku Black's]] crusade against mortals under the pretense that [[HumansAreFlawed they are a flawed mistake]] that must be corrected.
* LackOfEmpathy:
** He feels no empathy towards mortals, seeing them as sinful creatures who are AlwaysChaoticEvil. He also views the gods to be equally useless for not intervening in mortal affairs as well. When Present Zamasu is told by Goku about all the horrible things [[spoiler:his future counterpart has done to the future]], instead of being shocked or regretful, he's delighted to hear how far his plans had reached. He also feels nothing about [[spoiler:murdering his own master to steal his earring and the Time Ring]].
** [[spoiler: Future Zamasu views all mortals as inferior bugs. He shows no remorse as he helps Goku Black wipe them out]].
* LaserBlade: He can create a blade out of his energy, which he uses to split a Babarian in half. [[spoiler: Future Zamasu also uses one during his battle again Goku and Future Trunks]]. Considering how much [[spoiler:Black]] loves to use one as well, [[spoiler:it serves as yet another clue to Black's true identity]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: His theme is Solving the Mysterious Puzzle from the Dragon Ball Super OST. It's also a slower and ambient rendition of Goku Black's theme, [[spoiler:{{Foreshadowing}} the connection between them.]]
* MeaningfulName: The word "Zamasu" may have come from the Japanese verb ざます(''Zamasu'') which translates as "to be, to exist". It shares exactly the same definition with his former master's hypothetical name etymology, Gowasu.
* MoralMyopia: He constantly goes on about how mortals are brutal, selfish beings that abuse their god-given gifts to commit atrocities and kill each other, but he himself commits similar acts throughout the saga. Present Zamasu is [[spoiler: perfectly willing to kill his own master to advance his goals (and in the timeline where Goku Black hails, he ''succeeded''), Goku Black's first act upon stealing Goku's body was to murder Goku and his entire family [[EvilIsPetty purely out of spite for Goku beating him in their sparring match]], and Future Zamasu used ''his'' god-given gifts to assists Black in his atrocities, as well as his fellow gods, without a flicker of remorse.]] When [[spoiler: Future Zamasu and Goku Black fuse, Fused Zamasu even invokes this trope in regards to Goku and Vegeta fusing into Vegito, stating that "acts of gods are beautiful because we are inherently pure, while mortal endeavors will inevitably become wicked--corrupted and marred by sin!"]]
* MoralSociopathy: Zamasu truly and honestly believes that mortals are foolish and dangerous creatures that can challenge the gods and should be destroyed for the good of the universe. [[spoiler:When he's ready to kill Gowasu for his earrings, he fully admits that his actions are evil, but [[KnightTemplar that evil will lead to a greater good]] and he's doing justice by the gods]].
* MotiveRant: The guy just won't stop talking about how both gods and mortals are too flawed to live in his Utopia.
* MotiveDecay: Like his anime counterpart, Zamasu in the manga started off as a KnightTemplar who saw mortals as evil and gods as lazy and wanted to destroy them all to create a perfect world. But whereas anime Zamasu retained his vision and still revered the gods even after killing them, manga Zamasu lost all of his noble intentions, wanted to become the TopGod just for the sake of it, and denounced his fellow gods as beneath him.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: As a whole, the Kais are AlwaysLawfulGood and serve as benevolent Gods of Creation. Zamasu, however, looks down on mortals, views them as AlwaysChaoticEvil, and ultimately embarks on a genocidal rampage against them.
* {{Narcissist}}: All incarnations of Zamasu are this to the double-digit nth-degree. He's firmly convinced that he's just plain better than everyone else, to the extent that he furiously lashes out at the mortal Goku for [[HatesBeingTouched touching a god like him]], thinks he [[HolierThanThou knows better than his fellow gods]], including his more experienced master, is psychotically self-absorbed, refusing to [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity even consider the possibility that he's wrong about mortals]] and that it's his duty to wipe them all out, going so far as to slaughter the other gods because he considers them useless for [[TheGodsMustBeLazy sitting around and doing nothing about evil]], and constantly goes off on {{Motive Rant}}s and EvilGloating sessions, admitting that he doesn't really care if anyone listens to him or not because he just likes hearing himself talk. He's also unable to handle criticism and takes defiance of his plans ''very'' personally; when Trunks calls him nothing but a sinner and a murderer, Zamasu flies into a rage and gives him a ShutUpKirk, declaring [[NeverMyFault that his crusade is Trunks' own fault]] because he broke the gods' TimeTravelTaboo and created two separate timelines. To drive the point home, it's made clear that the ''only'' reason [[spoiler:Future Zamasu and Goku Black [[VillainousFriendship get along as well as they do]] is because they're literally the same person]].
* ANaziByAnyOtherName: Zamasu wants to wipe out all mortal life, believing that the universe would be better off without them and that gods are the only beings truly worthy of life. And by "gods", [[ItsAllAboutMe he really means himself]].
* NecessarilyEvil: Since he thinks all mortals are evil, he thinks he must be evil as well to rid the world of all injustice. Even if it means killing all the gods. However, as time goes on, it becomes clear that he doesn't care about justice and order, but about ridding the multiverse of every thing that he sees wrong with it...which is pretty much everything but himself.
* NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist: All incarnations of Zamasu repeatedly claim that they're doing what's necessary to create a "beautiful utopia" by wiping out all mortal life in TheMultiverse, believing mortals to be AlwaysChaoticEvil and gods are the only beings worthy of life. For all their claims of righteousness and bringers of justice, they ultimately boil down to nothing but [[FantasticRacism racist extremists]]. It becomes even clearer when Goku Black and Future Zamasu wipe out all of the other gods in Future Trunks' timeline, both to prevent them from interfering and so they'd be the "supreme gods," so it's crystal clear that they're only concerned about ''[[ItsAllAboutMe their]]'' [[InTheirOwnImage vision of a utopia]]. Goku Black in particular comes off as especially hypocritical in that regard, since he used the Super Dragon Balls to pull off a GrandTheftMe on Goku, essentially giving up his godly body for that of a mortal, and then slaughtered the entire Son family purely out of spite while wearing Goku's face.
* OffendedByAnInferiorsSuccess: One of his justifications for enacting the [[FinalSolution Zero Mortals Plan]] is offense that mortals could dare equal or surpass the gods.
* OmnicidalManiac: He firmly believes that the mortals are too evil to live and the gods are too lazy to live. So, his solution is to merge with the Multiverse itself and wipe out all life until only he remains.
* OnlySaneMan: He ''thinks'' he's this to the other gods in the multiverse. In his eyes, he's willing to do what needs to be done, [[NecessarilyEvil even if those acts are evil]], to do the god's justice while the other gods are content to sit around and do nothing.
* OnlySixFaces: Zamasu looks like an older, taller version of Shin from Universe 7, complete with the same hairstyle.
* OutsideContextProblem:
** Is from Universe 10, therefore ''no one'' even knew he ''existed'' except for Beerus and Whis, much less the monster he'd eventually become. Future Trunks didn't even know there ''was'' a multiverse before the Future was attacked by Black. [[spoiler:In addition, because up until then everyone had thought Black and Zamasu were the same person if there was any connection at all, the heroes are completely ''blindsided'' when Future Zamasu descends from the sky and joins his partner.]]
** He is also this in ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse''. [[spoiler:Aside from the likes of the Time Breakers and Demigra, usually when the Time Patrollers travel to a point in history to help the heroes engage a villain, they are doing so to repair the timeline and are relatively safe within the Time Nest themselves. Zamasu averts this, displaying knowledge about the Time Nest and the Time Patrollers, as well as his Time Ring presenting the risk of him being able to follow the Time Patrollers back; Fused Zamasu even states that once he beats Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, and the Future Warrior, he'll be going after Chronoa in the Time Nest. In the final scene of the DLC for the "Future Trunks" Saga, Infinite Zamasu actually manages to attack the Time Nest itself, and would have wrecked havoc had Future Zeno not stopped him.]]
* PayEvilUntoEvil: All the Zamasus' prime mindset. Since they believe that mortals are AlwaysChaoticEvil, it is their divine right to dispense justice by wiping out all the mortals across the multiverse, even if they know that their actions are [[NecessarilyEvil evil]].
* PhysicalGod: He's an apprentice Supreme Kai from Universe 10, the gods of creation in the Dragon Ball franchise. He is also ''much'' stronger than Shin, the Supreme Kais from Universe 7, and [[AdaptationalBadass in the anime]] can even stand up to Super Saiyan 2 Goku after he has been trained by Whis (in the manga, he's implied to be weaker than Super Saiyan 1 Goku). [[spoiler:[[TookALevelInBadass His future counterpart is even more powerful]] [[AdaptationalBadass in the anime]], being able to give Super Saiyan Blue Goku a good fight ''and'' he's an immortal. His future counterpart in the manga is weaker, being far weaker than [=SS2=] Trunks who's not tremendously stronger than the [=SS2s=] from the Buu arc, but he's still stronger than he was in the past ''and'' [[WeakButSkilled possesses useful abilities]] that his anime counterpart lacked such as teleportation and paralysis]].
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: His idea of saving the universe is plotting a FinalSolution for all mortal and god-kind, plus his insults towards Goku, Trunks and Vegeta carry some heavy racist undertones.
* ThePowerOfHate: Zamasu's hatred for both mortals and gods is what drives him.
* {{Pride}}: A key FatalFlaw of his, however, his is very different from other villains. In Zamasu's case, his pride is centered around being unable to see or admit that he may be wrong and isn't perfect despite being a god. After he gets into his mind that mortals need to be destroyed for the greater good, nothing Gowasu tells him can sway him and everything becomes confirmed bias. His pride also makes him believe that he can't [[ItsAllAboutMe believe in anyone but himself]], which is why he [[spoiler: teams up with his future self and kills the other gods because 'they wouldn't understand his ideals']].
* PrinciplesZealot: Zamasu's fully believes in the the 'gods' justice', which dictates that all forms of evil needs to be wiped out. He comes to the conclusion that [[AlwaysChaoticEvil mortals are evil by nature]] and that gods are useless and need to be destroyed. To that end, he's willing to [[spoiler:commit murder on all his fellow gods to [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans create a paradise free from mortals and useless gods]]. Present Zamasu would have killed his master, Gowasu, to gain control of the Time Rings if Whis hadn't stopped him]].
* PsychologicalProjection: He constantly prattles on about how mortals are violent, destructive creatures who cannot learn from their mistakes and are inflexible in their ways, but it rings a bit hollow coming from the guy who's fanatically obsessed with [[FinalSolution wiping out all mortal-kind]] and [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity refuses to see or consider the possibility that he may be wrong]]. When it comes down to it, the ''only'' person who's really as twisted and evil as Zamasu claims the mortals are is Zamasu himself.
* PsychopathicManchild: Despite all of his power and schemes, Zamasu is ultimately a punk who's ''way'' [[SmallNameBigEgo out of his depth]], motivated entirely by whims and impulses. By the time he's able to even ''consider'' he might have gone down the wrong path, he's way too far in to turn back. The anime downplays this by making Goku Black an InvincibleVillain constantly pulling out new powers and keeping the same SmugSuper attitude, while the manga plays it up. Appropriately, the manga's Black and Zamasu are at odds and don't even have a good contingency for what to do if things start to go wrong.
* APupilOfMineUntilHeTurnedToEvil: He is Gowasu's student, chosen to become the next Supreme Kai of U10. However, Zamasu's [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity black and white views on mortals]] cause him to see the beings he's suppose to guide and protect as being unworthy of the gods' knowledge. Meeting Goku and going to Planet Babari only solidified his bias, and concludes that ''all'' mortals need to be wipe out for universal peace. [[spoiler: To that end, Present Zamasu tries to murder Gowasu and steal his Time Ring]]. When Gowasu was told of this, he is ''definitely'' not pleased. [[spoiler: The Zamasu who would become Black not only killed his master for the earrings, but also killed Future Gowasu]].
* PureIsNotGood: Gowasu notes several times that Zamasu is a pure-hearted person who has a strong sense of justice. However, it is Zamasu's [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity inability]] to see past his own sense of justice and purity that leads him to believe that mortals are the root of all evil in the universe and it is his duty as a god to destroy them. This carries over into ''VideoGame/DragonBallFusions'', where Zamasu is immune to Spike the Devil Man's Devilmite Beam, a feat that no one else but [[IncorruptiblePurePureness Goku]] ever pulled off.
* PurpleProse: In the Funimation dub, all versions of Zamasu [[spoiler:sans Goku Black]] tend to use extravagant words to express themselves, fitting of his personality. While Zamasu is full of himself, he doesn't really partake into this in the English dub of the video games.
* PurpleIsPowerful: He has a similar purple-ish BattleAura to Black's (although Black's is darker) and he's many times stronger than Shin, who Goku admits wouldn't stand a chance against him, even before he was enhanced with god energy. [[spoiler: Future Zamasu's BattleAura is noticeably darker than his past counterpart]].
* PyrrhicVictory: [[spoiler: By the end of the Future Trunks Arc, he ''technically'' gets what he wants: a universe free of mortals and occupied solely by himself. Too bad this only came to be when Future Zeno decides he doesn't like the state of the Future universe and thus subsequently blinks the ''entire'' universe from existence--Zamasu included.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: All versions of Zamasu just ''love'' making dramatic speeches about how mortals being evil creatures who misuse the gods and about how the gods do nothing about mortals. Heck, he doesn't even care if no one listens to him; he just likes hearing himself talk. It gets very old very quickly by the time Vegito steps into the fray.
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:[[RedHerring Despite all the clues leading to the obvious conclusion that Zamasu and Goku Black are the same person]], Episode 56 shows Goku Black and Zamasu appearing side by side, being separate individuals working together]]. In Episode 58, Whis speculates that Zamasu used the Super Dragon Balls to create Goku Black and grant himself immortality. He was partially right. [[spoiler: Episode 60 reveals that Goku Black is Zamasu, but a different version of Present Zamasu who stole Goku's body using the Super Dragon Balls]].
* RightForTheWrongReasons: He's correct that the gods are lazy if they don't punish mortals who become evil, but as Gowasu says, it's not the Supreme Kais who mete out punishment, it's the Gods of Destruction. He should be directing his ire not at Gowasu but at Rumsshi for being so lazy. Had Rumsshi not slacked off on his duties so much, Zamasu would not have lost faith in the system and tried to take things into his own hands.
* TheRightOfASuperiorSpecies: The justification he uses for his actions, although [[spoiler: he's not above committing genocide against his fellow gods if they get in his way]].
* {{Sadist}}: All versions of Zamasu express this to varying degrees. Goku Black murdered Goku himself and then his family purely for the sake of being cruel after stealing the former's body, and then he and Future Zamasu reveal this to Goku after impaling him with a LaserBlade just to rub salt in the wound. Also, the Present Zamasu who was killed by Beerus was positively ''delighted'' to discover the chaos Black and Future Zamasu had inflicted upon the future Earth, happy that his dream of a god-and-mortal-free universe was becoming a reality.
* SanitySlippage:
** As Zamasu's distrust in gods and mortals grew, so did his extremist views and how far he was willing to go. [[spoiler:The second time the heroes visit him, he has just about lost it, willing to murder his master Gowasu for the sake of his twisted crusade]].
** [[spoiler: Future Zamasu]] has long since fallen off the deep end. Instead of the calm, young Kai we were introduced to, [[spoiler:Future Zamasu]] is a SmugSuper who is prone to {{Slasher Smile}}s that rival Goku Black's.
** By the time Zamasu becomes an evil spirit bent on assimilating the future Multiverse and all other timelines in order to become "justice itself" and kill all gods and mortals, he's reduced to a madman who's only capable of laughing madly.
* SatanicArchetype:
** An extremely talented Kai whose considered to potentially be one of the strongest Supreme Kais. He also ends up questioning the gods superior to him and views himself as knowing better than they do. [[spoiler:He ends up [[FallenAngel falling completely to darkness]] and trying to perform genocide on all mortals. Future Zamasu also has the characteristic {{Pride}} [[SmugSuper one would expect from this trope]]. Future Zamasu even declares himself (and Black, who is ''also'' him) a 'supreme god' after killing off the other gods, and then does so again after the two become Fused Zamasu]].
** How he views Goku after he beats him in a [[EvilIsPetty sparring match]]. [[spoiler: Future Zamasu in particular ''despises'' Goku and wants to kill him personally for being a jerk who fights the gods, despite never even personally meeting him until he came to the future. The Zamasu who becomes Goku Black has a [[{{Yandere}} love/hate relationship]] with Goku. On one hand, he despises Goku as much as the other Zamasus to the point of murdering him and his family. At the same time, he respects and adores Goku for his strength, seeing him as the only WorthyOpponent in the multiverse and trying to gain Goku's approval when he becomes a Super Saiyan Rosé. Fused Zamasu even states outright that ''this'' is why Black stole Goku's body; as far as he's concerned, Goku is ''everything'' evil and sinful about mortals and gods, and he took Goku's body to forever be reminded of what he perceives as the gods' failures]].
* SecondaryColorNemesis: Much like King Piccolo, Zamasu has green skin and dresses in purple, contrasting Goku's orange and blue.
* SignatureMove: Aura Slide/God Split Cut, a technique that allows him to coat his hand with purple ki, creating an AbsurdlySharpBlade in the process.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He's merely an apprentice Supreme Kai, yet he believes he knows better than anyone, including his older, more experienced master. By the time he [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope jumps off the slippery slope]] he declares himself to be the [[spoiler: supreme god of the multiverse and kills every god in the future timeline]]. When he becomes [[spoiler: Fused Zamasu]] he calls himself "the sun of this world". While he is extremely powerful he finds out the hard way that [[spoiler: he's an ant compared to [[TopGod Zeno]]]] and gets promptly smushed.
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: Zamasu is one of the only DB villains to avert this; in fact, his arc is an outright inversion of the usual formula of "super powerful villain comes and is far above everyone else, heroes must pull out various power-ups to win." It's quite important to his character and motivation. When his arc starts, ''Zamasu'' is the one who's [[SoLastSeason weak compared to his adversaries]] (weaker than even Cell according to the manga), while the ''heroes'' are the huge benchmark he has to reach. [[spoiler:Even his far stronger counterpart, Goku Black, is utterly smashed by SSB Vegeta with ease in their first encounter, and according to Trunks Black wasn't much stronger than Trunks himself when he first showed up in the future, making him Cell-level at best since Trunks at that point was still weaker than Dabura]]. He levels up by using several {{Plot Coupon}}s that used to be the domain of the protagonists alone. Specifically, he [[spoiler:uses the Dragon Balls to wish for CompleteImmortality (infinite revives), uses a time travel device to undo his defeat and team up with his alternate counterpart (like Trunks in the Cell arc), uses what is effectively his own pocket dimension to become stronger at his leisure with no one around to stop him (like the heroes' Time Chamber), uses the Super Dragon Balls to steal Goku's body (''literally'' turning the heroes' own power-ups against them with a super version of their signature MacGuffin), uses the Saiyan trait of getting stronger after near-death to continually power up (like the Saiyan protagonists in the Namek arc), uses progressively unlocked Super Saiyan forms for the same purpose, and finally uses the Potara earrings to become Fused Zamasu (like Piccolo/Nail in the Freeza arc, plus Goten/Trunks and Goku/Vegeta in the Buu arc).]]
** By the time he becomes [[spoiler:Infinite Zamasu, he plays this straight and has become the most dangerous villain in Dragon Ball history, bar none. Even more dangerous the antagonists of the next arcs such as Jiren and Broly, since despite their power they could at least be physically wounded. Infinite Zamasu (thanks to either CompleteImmortality paired with cloning ''or'' being metaphysical and therefore literally untouchable, depending on the version) simply cannot be hurt by anything short of the ''multiverse he's in'' being annihilated in one shot, and becomes exponentially more powerful every minute that he's alive.]]
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: He is known as both Zamas (Viz translation of the Super Manga, ''VideoGame/DragonBallFusions'', both Spanish dubs of the anime) and Zamasu (Crunchyroll subtitles, Funimation Dub, and ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse2'').
* SoreLoser: Zamasu always hated mortals, but what truly sets him off was when Goku hurt his pride in a simple sparring match. He didn't care that Goku was stronger than some gods, he only cared that he was stronger than [[ItsAllAboutMe him]].
* SlasherSmile:
** Present Zamasu gives one when the heroes catch him [[spoiler: Aura Slide-handed trying to kill Gowasu and reveal his plans to his master, followed by Goku telling him the crimes his future counterpart committed]].
** Future Zamasu prone to these, just like Goku Black. [[spoiler: The most vicious one he gives is to Goku after cornering him and asking him if he wants to know what Goku Black did to his family]].
* TheSociopath: He fits many of the qualities of one. He shows no empathy toward others, not even his own fellow gods, given that [[spoiler: he is willing to commit mass murder of mortals (and his fellow gods in Future Trunk's timeline) and even kill his own master to further his plan]]. After becoming a complete zealot in his belief, he continues to act as the dutiful student to Gowasu so he can gain knowledge about the Super Dragon Balls and [[spoiler: kill Gowasu without him suspecting anything]]. He also has a grandiose sense of self-worth, especially his [[spoiler: future counterpart who sees himself as a 'true god' after gaining immortality]], since he believes that he's doing the god's justice and all his evil acts are justified.
* SuperiorSuccessor: He ''views'' himself as this to Gowasu, and in terms of [[AsskickingLeadsToLeadership power]], he definitely is. Unfortunately, in terms of actually doing his job as [[GodIsGood a righteous god who protects and guides mortals]], [[FallenAngel Zamasu is]] ''[[FallenAngel anything]]'' [[FallenAngel but superior to Gowasu]].
* TautologicalTemplar: He believes that he is righteous and correct about mortals being evil and it's his duty to promote the god's justice by [[spoiler:wiping them out. Even if this means murdering his fellow gods]]. When he is called out about this by Gowasu and Vegeta, he states that they could never understand his ideals.
* {{Teleportation}}: It is heavily suggested that he knows the Kai Kai, the most advanced teleportation technique. Unlike the Instant Transmission where one has to seek out energy to teleport, the Kai Kai can go to any world in the lower realm and even the different universes, which is how Zamasu was able to move between U7 and U10 in the span of the morning.
* ThereCanBeOnlyOne: This is basically the full summary of Zamasu's goal. Consumed by his hate for mortals and gods, he believes the Multiverse exists only for him, despite his rhetoric of justice. He wants to kill all life forms and become one with the fabric of the cosmos itself, thus creating a Multiverse where only ''he'' exists...because he will ''be'' the Multiverse.
* TimeyWimeyBall: [[spoiler:Thanks to the Time Ring, his actions keep him from being erased from Beerus' Hakai. However, Beerus erasing Present Zamasu results in a new timeline being created, something he was trying to avoid. Luckily, Whis warns the Beerus of that timeline so that Zamasu's plan would not be repeated.]]
* TokenEvilTeammate: To date, he's the only known Kai or Kaioshin to turn evil, when all others at worst have been smug jerks. What's even more striking is that an evil Kaioshin ''shouldn't'' exist, since corrupt or impure Kais are cast down into the Demon Realm at birth and subsequently become Makaioshin (well, according to AllThereInTheManual sources). Since Zamasu ostensibly has a pure heart despite his incredibly flawed personality, he seemingly slipped through the net.
* TookALevelInJerkass: He goes from a WellIntentionedExtremist Kai who wants to protect the universe from the foolishness of mortals, to [[spoiler: wanting to kill all the mortals himself, as well as murdering people in cold blood. He even wants to kill Goku for daring to be a mortal who surpasses gods. Present Zamasu becomes so hardened in his belief that mortals are evil and that gods are too lazy to do anything that he's willing to commit murder on his own master]].
* TheoryTunnelVision: As far as Zamasu is concerned, ''all'' mortal life is evil and needs to be destroyed, and the gods, while [[TheGodsMustBeLazy lazy]], are inherently perfect. He blindly refuses to consider the possibility that mortals can learn and grow from their mistakes and that [[GodIsFlawed the gods are just as fallible]], even when Gowasu tells him as such.
* TheUnfettered: Once he gets into his head that mortals must be eliminated to bring peace to the universe, nothing stands in his way, not even his teachings as a Supreme Kai. [[spoiler: Without any hesitation, Present Zamasu tries to kill Gowasu to gain access to the Time Ring so he can use the Super Dragon Balls. Future Zamasu almost immediately joins Goku Black's side after he murders his master in cold blood and helps him kill the rest of the gods in the multiverse]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: [[http://web.archive.org/web/20210719090829/https://cdn.dbsmanga.com/file/mangap/5455/10021000/51.jpeg An extra picture found in Volume 4 of the manga]] shows that Zamasu appeared quite happy and delighted that Gowasu asked him to join him on the Sacred World of the Kais and wished to spread universal peace. By the time we see him in the main narrative though he has become disillusioned both with mortals and the Gods who don't intervene against them [[spoiler:eventually leading him to the decision to [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans destroy all mortals and gods across the multiverse in order to create his Utopia]].]]
* TheUsurper: [[spoiler:All of his incarnations aspired to kill Gowasu and take his position as Supreme Kai (the original Japanese name translating to God King of Worlds) for themselves and kill all the other gods. Future Zamasu and Black succeeded.]]
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: [[spoiler:Zamasu's vision of a perfect world is one devoid of mortals and gods, which lead him to carry out his extreme justice. In the end his so called "Perfect World" was just a wasteland with his face in the sky with no other living creatures, god or mortal]].
* VillainHasAPoint:
** His assessment of the Babarians proves sound; Gowasu brought him there to demonstrate that mortals weren't inherently evil and capable of maturation, yet even after a thousand years, there was no moral growth to observe in the species.
** He has a point about the gods' inaction against mortals who abused the knowledge of the gods. The suffering caused by Frieza, Bibidi, and Babidi could have been avoided if the gods were more active. Beerus specifically let Frieza do whatever he wanted and even approved of him destroying the Saiyans for [[DisproportionateRetribution petty reasons]]. In the ''Super'' manga, it's outright stated that Beerus should have been the one to handle Majin Buu, but he was [[TheGodsMustBeLazy asleep]]. On top of it all, the Universe Survival Saga reveals that part of the reason Universe 7 has such a low mortal level is because Shin and Beerus ''don't'' intervene and help mortals as much as they should.
* VillainousBreakdown: All his incarnations suffer this. At first, he keeps his composure, but as the battles wear on, Zamasu drops all pretenses and becomes an utter monster who doesn't care about justice and order anymore, but about killing all life in existence that's not himself, god and mortal. And when Future Zeno begins to erase him, he is reduced to screaming in horror.
* VisionaryVillain: He believes that he is right that mortals are AlwaysChaoticEvil and nothing his master tells him can convince him otherwise. All of Gowasu's attempts at showing Zamasu that mortals are not all bad backfire, like making him fight Goku and taking him to Babari to see the primitive life there. When he learns about the Super Dragon Balls, [[spoiler:Zamasu is ready to commit murder to fulfill his dream of a mortal-free paradise and gain immortality. Future Zamasu is so far off the deep end that he believes that he's a 'true god'.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: Although Zamasu [[spoiler: turning evil isn't a surprise]], given all the heavy hints within the show, him turning out [[spoiler: ''not'' to be Goku Black is the real shocker. Him being an immortal was also quite a twist]]. It becomes more confusing when it does turns out that Zamasu [[spoiler: is Goku Black, but another version of him since the characters and the audience are led to believe that Future Zamasu and Present Zamasu are the same person, when in truth Goku Black is a version of Present Zamasu, while Future Zamasu is the Zamasu of Future Trunks' timeline]].
* WeakButSkilled: A trait among every version ([[spoiler:barring Black]]). While he's by no means "weak", his power falls behind Goku, Vegeta, later Future Trunks, the angels, Gods of Destruction, and even the likes of Mr. Buu and Gohan in the manga. However, being a Supreme Kai, he posses abilities that are exclusive to his race. In the ''Super'' manga, he possesses [[TheMedic healing]], matter materialization, telekinesis, and both the anime and manga versions know Instant Movement. [[spoiler: His future counterpart adds CompleteImmortality to that list, and it effectively means he can tank anything Goku or Vegeta dish out and still come out unscathed]].
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: He has white hair, he's also a genocidal KnightTemplar.
* WickedCultured: He is impeccably polite, intelligent, drinks tea, and is a genocidal KnightTemplar.
* WithUsOrAgainstUs: The reason Goku Black and Future Zamasu slaughtered all of the other gods in Future Trunks' timeline. As they explain, none of the other gods would support or understand their plan or ideals, so they had to die.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Zamasu is a character who has deep philosophies about the role of mortals and gods, and why mortals are a mistake that should be eliminated for universal peace. However, he's in the Dragon World where the characters are not interested in hearing or humoring his beliefs or his way of justice, unlike most animes which would at least have characters hear the villain out before passing judgement. This leaves him open to several ShutUpHannibal moments when he goes into one of his {{Motive Rant}}s.
* WrongLineOfWork: His zeal for justice and punishing evil along with his potential battle power make him a far better fit for the position of God of Destruction than a Supreme Kai who is more about creating and guiding.
* YourTraditionIsNotMine: One of the reasons why he despises how Supreme Kais work. Supreme Kais are the Gods of Creation, and thus do not interact with mortals in anyway, which is partly why he sees mortals unfit to receive knowledge from them. Meeting Goku was the worse of it which solidifies his FaceHeelTurn in the long run. Gowasu is shocked when he found out the measures of his vision of "justice".

----
* AdaptationalJerkass:
** In the anime, when Zamasu slices the Babarian in half, he has a [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone shocked, almost horrified expression]] on his face, though he smiled briefly before that. He is so ashamed that he doesn't try to defend himself when Gowasu tells him off, [[IgnoredEpiphany at least until later]]. In the manga, Zamasu takes a great deal more pleasure in cutting the Barbarian in half, doing so with a SlasherSmile on his face and seems shocked that Gowasu didn't approve of his actions. When Gowasu confronts him about this, Zamasu dismisses his concerns since 'that mortal was trash'. Later, [[spoiler: just before he tries to kill Gowasu]] he indirectly admits that his actions are evil, but they will [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans eventually lead to good]]. Manga Zamasu scoffs at the notion that anything he does is evil.
** In the anime, it takes longer for Zamasu to turn since Gowasu has several heart-to-hearts with Zamasu and Zamasu himself only wants the gods to be more active in stopping mortals from abusing their power, not necessarily destroy them until he meets Goku. Manga Zamasu, however, always wanted to kill mortals or 'unnecessary beings' and only had one real heart-to-heart to Gowasu about his views (this is partly down to the ''Super'' manga, like the original ''Dragon Ball'' manga, being flatout much shorter than its anime counterpart, thus giving it less room for onscreen CharacterDevelopment). Him watching the tournament between U6 and U7 was also accidental in the anime since it was Gowasu watching the stream and Zamasu walked in on him while serving tea. In the manga, Zamasu watched the tournament himself, along with asking about the Super Dragon Balls.
** Another small change, in the anime, Zamasu is willing to admit that his actions are [[spoiler: evil, [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans but from that evil will come a greater justice]]]]. Manga Zamasu [[MoralMyopia refuses to see anything he does as evil]], even mocking Beerus of all people about his justice.
* AdaptationPersonalityChange:
** Manga Zamasu lacks the anime version's NervesOfSteel. When confronted by Beerus, Whis, Shin, and Goku for the second time, Anime Zamasu kept his cool and even wants to spar with Goku again. When he is [[spoiler:caught red-handed attempting to murder Gowasu]], he calmly tries to justify his actions and no longer bothering in lying about his EvilPlan. In the manga, Zamasu in the same scene acts nervous, stumbling to find an excuse about why he attacked Zuno. When his plans are revealed, he rants about his views of justice and [[spoiler: attacks ''[[TooDumbToLive Beerus directly]]'']].
** His relationship with Gowasu is portrayed slightly differently between the two versions. While Zamasu initially respects Gowasu in both versions, manga Zamasu is more vocal about his opinions and scoffs at Gowasu's mindset about mortals and the role of the gods. In the anime, Zamasu talks about his conflict with Gowasu, wonders why the gods act the way they do, and is somewhat opened to Gowasu's views since he doesn't dismissed them right away. He only decides Gowasu and the other gods are being sinful because they're willing to do nothing while evil flourish because [[BalanceOfGoodAndEvil evil leads to justice]] and he can't accept or understand that the [[GodIsFlawed gods are also flawed]].
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Upon his initial introduction, Zamasu's morality was unclear. He held a [[FantasticRacism particularly discriminatory view towards mortals]] and had a [[KnightTemplar strong sense of justice]], but did not show indications he was capable of the mass murders that Goku Black had been responsible for. However, this changes once Zamasu meets Goku, causing his hatred of mortals to grow and triggering his StartOfDarkness. [[spoiler:By the second time the heroes visit him, he has [[SanitySlippage fallen off the deep end]] and has [[FaceHeelTurn most definitely turned to evil]], with Beerus sensing the malice in his aura and the revelation he was planning to kill Gowasu.]]
* AssholeVictim: Beerus [[spoiler: kills him after being found guilty of murdering Gowasu, stealing his Time Ring, and trying to kill Goku by slowly atomizing him to the point that Zamasu screams in agony as he dies]].
* BadLiar: In the manga, when he sees Beerus and Whis who asked where he's been all morning, Zamasu is clearly flustered and tries to say he was helping his fellow lower gods. When that lie is caught, he stumbles over why he [[spoiler: attacked Zuno, asked about Goku, and gods switching bodies with mortals]]. This is in contrast to his anime counterpart who has shown himself to be a ConsummateLiar.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: While Zamasu in the anime starts out as a well-meaning Kai who has a very strict sense of justice and a strong distrust towards mortals, manga Zamasu was always a jerk since he wanted to kill mortals from the start, seeing them as unneeded beings. Unlike the anime version who [[SlowlySlippingIntoEvil slowly slipped into evil]] through a series of events, manga Zamasu gets triggered just seeing powerful mortals and decides [[spoiler: to kill his master and commit mass genocide]].
* BigBadWannabe: He intended to follow the same path as his other selves. After several episodes of buildup of his FaceHeelTurn, the way he's going to pull off his FinalSolution is to learn of the Super Dragon Balls and [[spoiler: murder Gowasu]]. However, he is prevented from doing so by [[spoiler: Whis rewinding time and stopping Zamasu's energy blade from killing Gowasu, followed by Beerus [[OneHitKill outright]] ''[[OneHitKill disintegrating]]'' [[OneHitKill him]]. Beerus thinks this will get rid of Goku Black in Future Trunks' timeline since killing a god does affect different timelines for some reason. However, we the audience know that isn't the case. Turns out, Present Zamasu didn't die as his original/present self, Goku Black, was protected from being erased from existence by his Time Ring]].
* BornInTheWrongCentury: More like "born into the wrong divine role", in this case. Zamasu would have probably been much, much happier if he was a God of Destruction rather than a Kai. Gowasu tries to drill the lesson into Zamasu's head that, as a Kai, he should not concern himself with destroying evil; that is the God of Destruction's role. Kais should focus on creating and nurturing mortal life, then observing their development from afar. Zamasu hates that he is constricted to this role, which is partly why he rebels.
* BrokenAce: Once a promising apprentice Supreme Kai with huge potential, Zamasu was held back by his extremist [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity morality]] about mortals. He slowly and steadily goes off the deep end after losing his sparring match with Goku. Not only does he become a complete zealot in his belief that mortals are irredeemably evil and must be destroyed for universal peace, but [[spoiler:he is also willing to abandon his godly body and take Goku's body as his own to acquire more power. When the heroes meet up with him the second time, he still retains his calm stoic demeanor, but it becomes apparent that he has [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope jumped off the slippery slope]], with Beerus being able to detect the malice emanating off him.]]
* TheComicallySerious: Zamasu is a very serious person with no comical quirk, however, the situations he finds himself in are what makes him funny. Namely, his entire first meeting with Goku is him trying to get away from Goku as he begs him for a sparring match. His reaction when [[spoiler: Whis stops his assassination attempt on Gowasu with a cat mitten]] is comedy gold.
* ConsummateLiar: When he sees the [[spoiler: Super Dragon Balls]] on Godtube, Zamasu plays the dutiful students and questions Gowasu about them, [[spoiler: seeing them as the key to start his plan]]. When confronted by Beerus, Whis, Goku, and Shin, he keeps a [[NervesOfSteel cool demeanor]] the entire time and has a pleasant conversation with them. He even asked about their investigation into the Time Rings and only shows shock when Gowasu states that they're there to see him. He's so good that only Beerus and Whis [[spoiler: sensed any KillingIntent within him and that's because they're particularly sensitive to such things]]. Even Goku failed to sense anything evil within Zamasu, something he's usually good at picking up.
* ContrivedCoincidence: In the manga, his plan to [[spoiler: kill Gowasu and take the Time Ring]] is only foiled because Future Trunks just happens to return to the past the day of his StartOfDarkness. The anime avoids this because him meeting Goku was his trigger and [[StableTimeLoop Goku only sparred Zamasu to see if he was Black, which wouldn't have happened if Black didn't followed Future Trunks to the past]].
* CreateYourOwnVillain: In the anime. It was the heroes' own attempts to find and stop Goku Black, that led them to seek Zamasu out, allowed Goku and Zamasu to meet, which in turn caused Zamasu's StartOfDarkness where his hatred of mortals increased to the point where he sought to commit mass genocide on them. Of course, [[spoiler: considering the fact that Future Zamasu almost immediately [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope jumped on board with Goku Black's plan]], something similar would have happened eventually.]] This was not the case in the manga, where Zamasu did not personally meet Goku before deciding down his path.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: [[spoiler: Present Zamasu gets ''atomized'' by Beerus after being caught in his attempted murder. Although these types of death are not unusual for this series, what makes Zamasu's death stand out is how slow it was. It takes several seconds for his body to disintegrate and Zamasu is screaming the entire time in anguish]].
* CueTheFlyingPigs: Quite literally, in this case. A panel showing his life prior to being recruited as a Supreme Kai disciple shows that he had a winged pig as a pet, reflecting King Kai's pet monkey Bubbles.
* CultureClash: Similar to the Universe 6 Supreme Kais, mortals interacting with gods in other universes is considered very unusual. Combine this with his distrust towards humanity and he's pretty much disgusted to see a mortal interact with a god, especially himself.
* DeaderThanDead: [[spoiler:Due to being atomized by Beerus' Hakai technique. It destroyed Zamasu right down to the soul; he's gone for good.]]
* DeathGlare: [[spoiler: Present Zamasu gives Beerus one just before the God of Destruction atomizes him.]]
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler:When faced with execution from the God of Destruction, he doesn't beg for his life or quiver in fear. Instead, he chooses to give Beerus a silent DeathGlare just before geting atomized]].
* DidntSeeThatComing: Present Zamasu's plan to [[spoiler:kill Gowasu and steal the Time Ring to use the Super Dragon Balls]] would have gone off flawlessly, if Goku didn't encounter [[spoiler: Future Zamasu]] and told Beerus what happened. He had no way of knowing that Goku could time travel since that's limited to only the Supreme Kais and he didn't learn about time travel himself until a few days ago.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: [[spoiler:After his plan is exposed, Present Zamasu tries to kill Goku, Gowasu, Shin, Beerus, and Whis. Goku beat him a few days ago, Beerus is the God of Destruction, and Whis is the strongest of them all. Zamasu probably should have tried to flee.]]
* DisproportionateRetribution: The entirety of his personal grudge against Goku, [[spoiler: which escalates to attempted murder]], was over the fact that Goku bested him in a sparring match. [[spoiler: His alternate self takes it even further by stealing Goku's body, then killing him and his ''entire family'' with it just to rub it in.]] Even worse in the manga where [[spoiler:he never even ''met'' Goku, only saw him on Godtube and became enraged to see a mortal wielding the power of a god.]]
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: [[spoiler:Present Zamasu is slowly vaporized by Beerus, after he's caught in the act of attempted murder. We actually hear Zamasu scream in agony as he dies, even with his head gone]].
* FantasticRacism: He really dislikes mortals, seeing them as dangerous since they keep repeating the same mistakes and fighting pointless wars.[[spoiler: It eventually reaches the point where Future Zamasu teams up with Goku Black (who is another Zamasu) to kill all the mortals]].
* FatalFlaw: Pride and Narcissism. Ultimately, he views himself as a 'perfect god' who knows better than everyone else, thus he can't understand the idea that [[GodIsFlawed he's flawed]] and needs to grow, so he can't understand Gowasu's mentality that mortals are flawed but can become greater if time is taken to nurture them. [[spoiler:This is ultimately the entire cause of his fall to evil and everything that happens.]]
* TheGift: He is such a talented Supreme Kai in training that Goku surmises that he could surpass Beerus someday. Beerus, naturally, takes offense to this.
* TheGodsMustBeLazy: This is how he feels about the Kais' non-intervention policy. He feels that the gods should take direct action in stopping evil and destroy the sinful mortals who misuse the knowledge giving to them by the gods. Gowasu feels that there needs to be a [[BalanceBetweenGoodAndEvil balance of good and evil]], especially since [[GodIsFlawed the gods themselves aren't perfect]]. This only makes Zamasu believe that the gods' inaction is a sin.
* HatesBeingTouched: He was angry at Goku for touching his arms, to the point that Gowasu had to intervene so nothing happens. To be fair, Goku started to touch his body just to see how well trained he was the moment they met, but considering he did it without his consent, Zamasu had a pretty valid reason to be angry. [[spoiler: It's later revealed that this had less to with consent and more to do with his top god complex. As Fused Zamasu states, touching him is a proof of the mortals' sin.]]
-->'''Zamasu''': How dare you touch me, mortal!
* HumansAreBastards: He feels that humans, aka mortals, are all stupid and barbaric since they keep repeating the same mistakes, going through the cycle of growth and conflict, all according to what he has seen as the North Kai of Universe 10. Goku beating him in a sparring match only hardens his opinions, because he now knows these foolish mortals can rival the gods. His opinion is further solidified when he sees the mortals on Planet Babari still fighting wars even one-thousand years into the future.
-->'''Zamasu:''' Master Gowasu, you have said something often: to make mistakes but learn from them, thus forging a better world. That is the essence of the mortal spirit. But as far as I can see, mortals do not learn this way at all. [[BarbarianTribe Planet Babari's]] no outlier, Master, you've seen this countless times before.
* HumansAreFlawed: He wonders if mortals are worth the gods' protection since they keep repeating the same mistake of growth and conflict. Going to Planet Babari confirmed his suspicions since the mortals there are still primitive and violent, ever after thousand years has passed. Gowasu counters that even the [[GodIsFlawed gods aren't infallible]], but Zamasu doesn't buy it.
* IgnoredEpiphany: After he has his MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment, he seemed shameful for killing a mortal when he could have just left with his master. He can't even look Gowasu in the eye while he's lecturing him on his actions. A scene later, he's back to his self-righteous self and feels justified killing mortals since they're evil.
* ImmortalitySeeker: After learning of the Super Dragon Balls, this becomes his goal. [[spoiler: While his BadFuture counterpart has already succeeded in doing so, the Present Zamasu is stopped and killed by Beerus]]. Ultimately subverted; as it turns out, [[spoiler: Zamasu's ''real'' intent was to use the Super Dragon Balls to [[GrandTheftMe steal Goku's body]], thus becoming Goku Black.]]
* ItsPersonal: After losing to Goku in a sparring match, [[spoiler:he becomes obsessed with Goku to the point of stealing his body and then killing him with it. To add salt to the wound, he murders Goku's family for no good reason other than to be sadistic. That last action makes the utter hatred strong on both sides]].
* JerkassHasAPoint: Despite his misgivings about mortals, Zamasu is ''completely'' justified in denying Goku's request to fight him, especially with how frequently he had turned down the proposition. In fact, him attempting to avoid the fight might have been better for the universe as a whole.
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: Although he has been SlowlySlippingIntoEvil since his introduction, Zamasu jumps after he learns about the Super Dragon Balls. Instead of waiting a year to use the Super Dragon Balls, he decides to [[spoiler:murder his own master and steal his earrings so he can use the Time Ring, jump ahead a year, wish for Goku's body, and then begin his quest to wipe out all the mortals. Zamasu even admits his acts are evil, but [[NecessarilyEvil it's all to serve a greater good]]]].
* LastVillainStand: After [[spoiler:being exposed as a villain to Gowasu, rather than flee, Zamasu tries to kill Goku after hearing he succeeds in his goal in the future. But Beerus intervenes and kills him]].
* MaskOfSanity: Not so much in the anime where Zamasu is more naive and conflicted before he starts going off the deep end. His manga counterpart, however, is clearly unhinged given his SlasherSmile when he sliced the Babarian in half and his shocked expression that Gowasu didn't approved. When his plans are revealed he gives a crazy smile before [[spoiler: attacking ''Beerus'']]. Beerus even comments that Zamasu finally shows his true colors.
* MoralMyopia: In the manga, Zamasu adamantly refuses to believe that anything he does, up to and including killing his own master, is evil. This is in direct contrast to the anime, where he ''does'' admit that what he's doing is evil, albeit [[NecessarilyEvil necessary evil]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: He briefly gives this expression after he realizes that he killed a Babarian in coldblood. When Gowasu questions why he did it, he's unable to answer or look at his master's face. [[IgnoredEpiphany He quickly gets over it and goes back to hating mortals]].
* NecessarilyEvil: How he justifies his [[spoiler: attempted murder of Gowasu]]. From his point-of-view, it's an evil act that is necessary to create a greater justice.
* NervesOfSteel: To Zamasu's credit, [[spoiler:when Beerus is ready to execute him for his attempted murder of Gowasu, he gives the God of Destruction a [[DefiantToTheEnd defiant]] DeathGlare]]. Before then, he kept a calm and pleasant demeanor when confronted with Whis, Beerus, Goku, and Shin, while planning [[spoiler: the murder]].
* NoBodyLeftBehind: He [[spoiler:gets completely atomized by Beerus.]]
* OhCrap: Zamasu has one when [[spoiler:he backs into Beerus after Whis foils his attempt to kill his master.]]
* SlowlySlippingIntoEvil: From the start, he had some distrust towards mortals since they keep repeating the same pattern of flourishing and war. At first, he just wants the Kais to be hands-on in dealing with mortals instead of sitting back and watching them. After meeting Goku and learning that mortals can become strong enough to challenge the gods, he begins to view mortals are both foolish ''and'' dangerous. So when Gowasu is overlooking the new mortal race on Planet Babari, he recommends wiping them out since they're violent. Gowasu takes him into the future of Babari to see if the inhabitants will become more peaceful giving time. They don't, and it reinforces his belief that mortals are AlwaysChaoticEvil and needs to be destroyed to bring peace to the universe. When a native of Babari attacks him, he murders the Babarian even though he posed no threat. [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone Although he is sorry at first]], he quickly [[IgnoredEpiphany justifies his actions]] by saying that mortals are evil and that the gods are sinning by allowing them to exist. After learning about the Super Dragon Balls, he threatens [[spoiler: Zuno to learn more information about them and Goku. In Trunks' future, a version of Zamasu is working with Goku Black to eliminate humanity. Whis and Beerus suspects that Zamasu murdered Gowasu for his Time Ring, uses the Super Dragon Balls to wish for immortality, before attacking Trunks' timeline]] However, [[spoiler: what really happens in the original timeline is that Zamasu becomes Goku Black, kills Present and Future Gowasu, and convinces Future Zamasu to join his cause]].
* SmugSnake: He is reduced to this after he's [[spoiler: caught trying to commit murder against Gowasu. Instead of escaping since it's heavily implied he knows the Instant Movement, he tries to kill Goku, since Goku tells him that his dream succeeds in the future. This ends with him being killed by Beerus]].
* SoreLoser: After Goku wins their sparring match and graciously offers to help Zamasu up, Zamasu powers up to attack Goku again before Gowasu calls him off. Later on, when complaining about mortals, he brings up Goku having the nerve to challenge him, suggesting he's still bitter about it.
* StableTimeLoop: A very odd example considering [[TimeyWimeyBall Dragon Ball time travel]] uses {{Alternate Timeline}}s. He is started on the path of villainy when Goku beats him in a sparring match, which only happened because his ki is similar to that of Goku Black. After a series of events, [[spoiler: a version of Present Zamasu becomes Goku Black, attacks Earth, makes Future Trunks go to the past to get help, Black follows him, Beerus and Whis sees him and the Time Ring, investigates Zamasu, and the cycle repeats]].
* StalkerWithoutACrush: He has this vibe towards Goku in both versions, especially in the manga version where he never even meets Goku personally before deciding to switch bodies with him. Using Gowasu's PC, he obsessively reads up on Goku and watches his [=GodTube=] video appearances on repeat.
* StartOfDarkness: While he never trusted or liked mortals, he wasn't actively against them or wanted to kill them. He just wanted to take a more direct approach when dealing with mortals who abused the gods' knowledge, instead of just watching and guiding. Things, however, went downhill the moment Present Zamasu meets Goku. Not only is Goku a mortal who is friendly with gods, but he is also more powerful than most gods outside of the Gods of Destruction. Once Zamasu gets into his mind that mortals are stupid ''and'' dangerous, everything else was confirmed bias.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Although Zamasu tries to [[spoiler: kill him, take the Time Rings, and murder mortals in the name of justice, Gowasu is saddened when Beerus kills him. All he can do is mournfully say Zamasu's name]].
* TautologicalTemplar: After being caught [[spoiler: purple blade-handed trying to kill Gowasu, his master [[WhatTheHellHero demands to know why he did it]] since he's supposed to be a [[GodIsGood Supreme Kai]]. Zamasu scoffs at him, saying that he's only doing the gods' justice]].
* ThisCannotBe: He cannot comprehend how a "lowly human" could rival the powers of a god and his face practically screams this trope when Goku manages to get the best of him during their spar.
* TooDumbToLive:
** From Zamasu's point-of-view, mortal are this since they keep repeating the same mistake of flourishing and war. They're so dumb that he feels that the gods should just destroy all the mortals and put them out of their misery for universal peace.
** What does Present Zamasu do when he was confirmed as Gowasu's [[spoiler: murderer]]? Escape to hide away from everyone else who knew of his plans to [[spoiler:gain immortality and create an evil Goku]]? Nope, he tries to attack Goku in the open, thinking everything has come to full-circle since Goku tells him that he succeeds in the future. And what happens after that? [[spoiler:Beerus grabs his hand mid-attack and atomized him]]. He's even dumber in the manga where he attacks ''Beerus'' directly after his plans are revealed.
* TookALevelInJerkass: He started out as well-meaning Kai who serves Gowasu and seems to truly enjoy his company as they had tea together. Although he was frustrated with the foolishness of mortals, he was at least willing to listen to his master's words about why mortals were worth protecting and why it's the gods' job to guide them. That all changed the minute he meets [[StartOfDarkness Goku]], a mortal who not only hang around gods, but had power that surpassed many of them, including himself. Once he witnessed Goku's strength and the brutality of the Babarians on Planet Babari, he become a complete zealot who is willing to do anything to bring peace to the universe, [[spoiler: which includes murder and mass genocide of both the gods and mortals]]. However [[spoiler: with how Future Zamasu quickly jumped at the idea to help Goku Black, it’s clear that there was always something rotten inside of him]].
* UnfulfilledPurposeMisery: Quite like Goku, he has spent a good portion of his life honing his martial arts skills and abilities. This is one of the main reasons he gets promoted to be Gowasu's apprentice. However, now he has less and less opportunities for any physical challenges, which, coupled with his sense of justice, makes it hard for him to just sit and watch most of the time. [[spoiler:It remains up for debate why he didn't go for the job of God of Destruction instead.]]
-->'''Zamasu:''' Then this strength I've worked so long and hard to build up and hone... Just what is it meant to be used for?
* VillainCorner: For the most part, he's portrayed as a young, inexperienced Kai who truly wants to make the universe a better place, and sees [[HumansAreFlawed mortals]] as not worth the gods' protection since they keep repeating the same mistakes. It is not until he meets and fights Goku and visits Babari that he begins to believe that mortals are [[AlwaysChaoticEvil inherently evil and dangerous]], and should be destroyed for the good of the universe. He also comes to believe that the Kais just watching is a sin since they're allowing evil to flourish. Him seeing Goku cloaked in god energy from watching the Hit vs. Goku fight on Godtube only pushes him further over the edge. [[spoiler: Episode 56 shows that he will eventually leave the corner]].
* VillainousBreakdown: While Zamasu remains [[NervesOfSteel relatively cool]] when confronting by Beerus to the point of giving the God of Destruction a DeathGlare before his [[spoiler: execution]], Manga Zamasu has a horrified expression before Beerus [[spoiler: kills him]].
* WhamLine: Goku mentions this of Zamasu's potential after their brief fight while talking to ''Beerus'':
-->'''Goku''': Yeah, that guy still has room to grow, so he could wind up even stronger than you someday!
* WrongTimeTravelSavvy: When he hears about his future self in Trunks' timeline, he assumes that he's guaranteed to succeed and announces his plan to wipe out mortals. [[spoiler:Beerus then one-hit kills him, causing the timeline to split.]]

And since you've learned to defy time you can spread your violence even farther."''

The incarnation of Zamasu from Future Trunks's timeline.
----
* AdaptationalBadass:
** [[ZigZaggedTrope Zig-Zagged]]. While he's weaker than Goku Black in both mediums, the manga gives him all of Kibito Kai's abilities like telekinesis, the [[HealingHands ability to heal others]], and the ability to paralyze the movements of others. He used these to easily freeze [[spoiler: Goku during their fight]]. At the same time, the manga portrays him as a far weaker fighter compared to the anime version, being taken down easily by Goku and resorting to his [[spoiler: immortality almost immediately]] whereas in the anime he can still fight and inconvenience [=SSB=] Goku in an 1-on-1 fight, and even hold down Goku and Trunks simultaneously. In fact, according to Goku, he's way weaker than even Super Saiyan 2 Trunks (who at this point is almost as powerful as Goku's non-god-powered [=SS3=], and who a few years ago was still weaker than Dabura) and he gets overwhelmed by Super Saiyan God Goku after he used the [[spoiler: Evil Containment Wave, which was stated to have drained most of Goku's power ([[DangerousForbiddenTechnique the move is supposed to be fatal]])]].
** It's implied in [[https://twitter.com/Herms98/status/925541569041592321 this interview]] that it was actually the anime giving him the AdaptationalBadass treatment while the manga was closer to Toriyama's outline. [[spoiler: In said outline, Fused Zamasu (a fusion of Future Zamasu and a nearly SSB-level character, SSR Black) is only slightly stronger than SSB Goku and can't stand up to two [=SSBs=] fighting together, meaning he's only moderately stronger than SSR Black. Obviously he'd be a lot stronger than that if ''both'' his components were SSB level. This implies that, compared to Black, Toriyama's Future Zamasu was extremely weak, as even Kibito (stated to be dozens of times weaker than Shin) was stated to give Shin an enormous boost when he Potara-fused with him, even if it wasn't nearly to the same extent as the boost of Goku and Vegeta merging. This would lend more credence to the manga's depiction of Future Zamasu as late Cell/early Buu arc level.]]
* AdaptationPersonalityChange:
** His fighting style also differs between the two mediums. Much like Goku Black, Zamasu has a very elegant fighting style and tends to do quick attacks. He also has a bad habit of dropping his guard because [[spoiler: he's an immortal]], allowing weaker fighters like Super Saiyan 2 Trunks to tag him and will purposely jump in front of attacks meant for Goku Black to protect him. In the manga, he's more WeakButSkilled; weaker than Super Saiyan 2 Trunks by default, unable to even budge the [=SSBs=] without the element of surprise, but gifted with all of Kibito Kai's techniques like telekinesis and the ability to paralyze his opponent (even ones ''way'' stronger than him). He usually fights other opponents to keep them away from Black so he can fight one-on-one, using himself as a [[StoneWall meat shield]] and [[WeNeedADistraction distraction]] rather than a serious fighter.
** In general, like [[Characters/DragonBallGokuBlack Goku Black]], the way both characters are portrayed [[DependingOnTheWriter is quite different]], with both of them being more malicious, arrogant, and prone to [[SlasherSmile Slasher smiles]]. One of the thing that separates both characters from both versions, is that manga [[spoiler: Black]] and Zamasu [[spoiler: managed to kill all of humanity before fusing]], their anime counterparts [[spoiler: fused and became one with the multiverse before wiping out humanity]].
* AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul: His relationship with Goku Black is different in both adaptations of Toriyama's plot outline. In the anime, they're kindred spirits fighting to kill all mortals and they fight together with Zamasu acting as Goku Black's shield since he's an immortal and they often combine their attacks. They're so united in their thinking that they sometimes speak in unison and can communicate without words. In comparison, he and Goku Black in the manga never fight together and suffer infighting the moment Goku and Vegeta overwhelm them. Zamasu even seems to look down on Goku Black for abandoning his godly body for power given his conversation with Goku. In fact, he seems to only support Goku Black because his immortality alone can't kill all the mortals in the multiverse. This arguably counts as AdaptationalHeroism on the anime's part; manga Zamasu is so despicable that he literally can't even get along with [[spoiler: himself]].
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: He is a prodigy among the Supreme Kais and his present counterpart can somewhat hold his own against Super Saiyan 2 Goku (whose base form alone surpasses Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks in the anime; in the manga he's still only around his Buu arc level, but that still makes him the second strongest Kai we've seen). Future Zamasu is also an [[SmugSuper arrogant prick]] since he's an [[spoiler: immortal]] (and in the anime, can fight almost evenly with Super Saiyan Blue Goku; in the manga, he's still about as strong as he always was, but still immortal). He's so confident in his strength that he lets Future Trunks impale him, just to show off his immortal body.
* AscendedFridgeHorror: Vegeta and Frieza [[spoiler:wanted to use the Dragon Balls to gain immortality]]. Unlike those two, Zamasu [[spoiler:succeeded in getting his wish granted and becomes an InvincibleVillain]].
* BaitAndSwitchBoss: Despite being a BigBadDuumvirate with Goku Black, neither of them are the FinalBoss. That honor goes to [[spoiler: Fused Zamasu]].
* BigBadDuumvirate: He sides with [[spoiler: Black in the future to kill all the mortals. They end up fusing to make Fusion Zamasu.]]
* BreakTheHaughty: [[spoiler:Nearly getting sealed away causes him to have a ''massive'' VillainousBreakdown. Even after breaking free, he's visibly freaked out. Deconstructed, as instead of humbling him, it causes him to [[TheGlovesComeOff realize the heroes are actually a threat to him and Goku Black]], spurring them to [[FusionDance fuse into Fusion Zamasu.]]]]
* CombatPragmatist: He exploits the fact that he [[spoiler: has [[CompleteImmortality immortality]] by grabbing both Goku and Future Trunks so that Goku Black can hit them head-on with his Kamehameha. The attack knocks out both Saiyans, but Zamasu is completely unharmed]]. Before then, he had no problem with Goku Black jumping in to help him kill Goku during their fight. Later on, he keeps exploiting his [[spoiler:immortality]] by getting right in the way of attacks thrown at ''or even by'' Goku Black, leaving the latter unscathed and letting him attack while Zamasu is holding them, respectively. In the manga when he realizes that [[spoiler:Goku managed to heal Vegeta using a Senzu Bean, he snatched the bag from him using his materialization power and burned it, preventing them from healing any further]]. Finally, he's very fond of sneak attacks, as attacks on off-guard opponents are disproportionately effective in ''Dragon Ball''. In the manga, his lower battle power relative to his partner and foes means that this is pretty much the only way he ''can'' affect their battles, besides acting as non-combat support. He also uses his telekinesis to hurl Trunks' own sword at him.
* CombinedEnergyAttack: He can merge his energy attacks with Goku Black to create an even more powerful energy blast since they are the same person.
* TheComicallySerious: Much like his present counterpart, Future Zamasu also fits this bill. [[spoiler: While Future Zamasu is having one of his usual {{Motive Rant}}s, Goku and Vegeta ignores him and have a comedic argument about Goku leaving the urn they were going to use for the Mafuba in the time machine (which Black destroyed). When Zamasu realizes they aren't listening to him, he admits [[{{Narcissist}} that he just likes hearing himself talk]], which even Black finds funny. Later, Bulma actually tries to flirt with him to buy time for Future Trunks to learn the Evil Containment Wave. He ''isn't'' amused]].
** Future Zamasu, despite being a complete asshole to you as your mentor in ''Xenoverse 2'', laughing at you for "trying to imitate the divine", will say [[GratuitousForeignLanguage foreign words]] like nothing and perform an Old Kai ritual dance for you, and gives you the "I want to be a Godtuber" super soul. [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments It is absolutely bizarre]].
--> '''Future Zamasu:''' All existence is an extension of the gods. Without us, there is nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero.
* CompleteImmortality: He is a [[spoiler: complete immortal, due to wishing for it using the Super Dragon Balls. As far as we know, there is nothing that can kill him. Being impaled or blasted by powerful energy attacks does no damage to him. Anything that can penetrate his body is instantly healed. He can be sealed with the Mafuba, but [[IdiotHero Goku]] and Bulma forgot the seal.]]
--> '''Future Zamasu''': I've taken godhood to a new level. [[BlasphemousBoast Divinity made perfect]], with a body that befits a Kai. One that is invincible!
* CurbStompBattle: To show how much stronger he is than most of his fellow Supreme Kais, he easily stabs through Gowasu and beats down Shin over the course of a few panels in the manga. He himself becomes a victim of this at the hands of the much more powerful Goku and Trunks whenever they can separate him from Black, but his immortality and healing factor make it a non-issue for him.
* ADayInTheLimelight: In ''Videogame/DragonBallXenoverse2'', you can help out Future Zamasu take out Goku Black. In his words, he sees Black as "just another being entirely" and a "fallen god spoiled by humanity", and was hoping to take him out at the end of the Zero Mortals Plan and declares himself as the only true god. Keep in mind he allows you to help him for the time being, which slightly counts as AdaptationalNiceGuy. Guess they aren't kindred spirits after all (or at the very least, these particular versions of them).
--> '''Future Zamasu:''' Now '''kneel'''. I am your god! The one true god! Ha ha ha!
* DeaderThanDead: Was part of [[spoiler:Fused Zamasu, as such when Future Zeno erased Fused Zamasu from existence, Future Zamasu was also erased. Doubly so, as Whis creates a new timeline where Future Beerus took care of Future Zamasu before the Zero Mortals Plan could ever begin, ensuring this version of Zamasu no longer exists in any form.]]
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: He does this quite a bit, taking full advantage of his CompleteImmortality. Such highlights include holding Goku and Future Trunks in place to ensure that Goku Black's Kamehameha Wave doesn't miss, and letting Black stab ''through'' him to get to Goku.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: He was the one who urged Goku Black to fuse with himself. While his fused form undeniably became much more powerful than ever, his CompleteImmortality ended up being muddled since he fused with a mortal Black which gives the heroes a chance to destroy his physical body. Furthermore, he also loses much of the pragmatic traits that made both Future Zamasu and especially Black dangerous and has the tendency to either toy around with his enemies or go in a MotiveRant that quickly leave himself wide open for them to punch in his face. His decision to fuse ironically ended up his own undoing. This is more justified in the manga version, where Black was steadily losing ground against Vegeta in their fight and Trunks alone was more than enough to handle Zamasu; in that case Goku and Vegeta could team up on Black, defeat him easily, and then just seal Future Zamasu with the Evil Containment Wave later, as Shin was right there and could've teleported back to get the seal.
* DistinctionWithoutADifference: When asked by if he and Goku Black are comrades, he denies it, stating that they are only two people working together on the same dream. Goku lampshades that's basically the same thing.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Future Zamasu makes his grand entrance by descending from the heavens like an almighty god and landing next to Goku Black, smiling smugly at Goku. He then tells Goku Black that he promised him that he can kill Goku.
* EvilDuo: Goku Black and Future Zamasu are the primary villains of the Future Trunks Saga, working together to destroy all the mortals in the multiverse. Goku Black is more the muscle and brute of the duo, who wants to gain power to the point of passing up immortality so he doesn't get rusty. Zamasu is the thinker and planner, wanting Goku Black to take his time fighting Goku to maximize his growth instead of outright killing him. Despite this, they are both AxCrazy.
* EvilMentor: Future Zamasu can be a mentor in ''Videogame/DragonBallXenoverse2''. Similar to Broly, he sees you more as an amusement rather than an actual comrade, lacks any sort of affability for a mere mortal and only trains you because of you knowing another god (The Supreme Kai of Time) and possibly having god ki. He also does the silly dance Old Kai to you. [[TheComicallySerious Yes, he does.]]
--> '''Zamasu:''' Perhaps I shall bestow upon you the gift of godhood. Would you like that? Oh ho ho ho. Even gods are partial to the odd joke.
* ExplainingYourPowerToTheEnemy: He's more than happy to tell anyone who will listen that he's an immortal and it's useless to attack him.
* ExploitedImmunity: He exploits his immortality by holding Goku and Future Trunks in place while Goku Black fires a Kamehameha at them. During the second battle, he acts as a meat shield for Goku Black.
* FantasticRacism: Both he and Goku Black despise Earthlings, calling them the worst type of mortal, since they broke the time taboo. They specifically chose Future Trunks' timeline to punish the Earthlings and even say that Trunks' transgressions have awoken the justice in their hearts. How much of that is actually true is debatable since Future Zamasu and Goku Black were already on the deep end before they knew of Trunks' 'sins'.
* FatalFlaw: He has a horrible habit of lowering his guard because he's an immortal. He gets sucker punched by Goku and Future Trunks several times, and gets caught in Trunks'/Goku's [[spoiler: Evil Containment Wave because he's too self-confident to dodge]].
* FearfulSymmetry: Since Goku Black and he are basically the same person, they fight perfectly in-sync with each other and can read the other's movements. Vegeta names this as one of the reasons why they can't beat them in a straight fight.
* FeelNoPain: [[spoiler: Thanks to his CompleteImmortality]], he feels no pain, even when being impaled.
* TheFightingNarcissist: He's ''very'' full of himself and proud, believing himself to be a 'true God' [[spoiler:after obtaining immortality.]] It says a lot that the ''only'' being who he seems to view as an equal is [[spoiler:Black, who is actually an ''alternate universe version of himself''.]] He outright admits to [[spoiler:Black]] that he makes his grand AGodAmI speeches primarily to hear himself talk and doesn't care if anyone listens or not.
* {{Foil}}:
** To [[UltimateLifeForm Cell]]. Both are incredibly strong villains from the future who [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Trunks accidentally brought]] [[CreateYourOwnVillain into this world]] and [[TheFightingNarcissist are very full of themselves]]. They both strive to [[OmnicidalManiac destroy every living thing in the universe]], however, Zamasu believes everything he's ever done was for the greater good (and in the manga, Zamasu believes ''he'' is the greater good), but Cell has no delusions about his morality and [[CardCarryingVillain embraces his title with pride]].
** He can also be considered one to [[SupermanSubstitute Jiren's]] [[AdaptationalNiceGuy manga counterpart]]. Both are ''also'' the WorldsStrongestMan in their respective universes and they both have a very strong sense of justice. However, Jiren is also openly compassionate and he only fights to ensure his universes survival (though, in the manga, [[ThouShallNotKill he said he'd rather his universe die than have to kill other universes to ensure its survival]]), whereas Zamasu will openly commit genocide on a universal scale to exact "justice" on mortals. To expand on this further, Jiren is disinterested in the prospect of being a God of Destruction, whereas Zamasu will do anything in his power to be the TopGod. On a smaller scale, Zamasu is [[EvilIsHammy very theatrical]], whereas Jiren is [[TheStoic cold and calculating]].
* ForTheEvulz: There was really no great reason to bring up the fact that Goku Black killed Goku's family out of spite other than to highlight that he's a soulless, colossal bastard.
* FreakOut: He '''loses it''' when he realizes [[spoiler: the Mafuba is actually capable of defeating him. Even after he escapes, he's clearly shaken and scared.]]
* FriendshipDenial: He denies that Goku Black is his comrade, instead referring to him as a kindred spirit with a similar vision, which completely baffles Goku. This becomes more confusing since they get along very well and even seem to live together in a cottage. Even more, he laments that Goku Black should have become an immortal like him. [[spoiler:In Episode 60, it's revealed that Goku Black is Present Zamasu from an alternate timeline, which is probably why Future Zamasu doesn't see Goku Black as a 'friend' since they're basically the same person]].
* FusionDance: In Episode 64, he and Goku Black use their Potara earrings to fuse since they're done messing around.
* FutureBadass: In the manga, Future Zamasu can trade blows with Super Saiyan Goku and easily defeat Shin, while the present timeline Zamasu is a comparative weakling who had some trouble fighting Kibito. In the anime, Future Zamasu can fight against Super Saiyan Blue Goku on almost even footing. This is the same person whose present counterpart was overwhelmed by Super Saiyan 2 Goku when they first met.
* FutureMeScaresMe: [[InvertedTrope Double inverted]]. [[spoiler:It's actually Present Zamasu (in Goku's body), that scared Future Zamasu when his master got murdered. It also didn't take much for Future Zamasu to get over said fear and join his present self.]]
* AGodAmI: Although he is literally a god, this becomes an ExaggeratedTrope by believing himself a true god and the only one worthy of divine power since he's [[spoiler: an immortal. He even went as far as to murder all the other gods in every universe and declare himself as the supreme god]].
* GodzillaThreshold: {{Downplayed}}. He reaches this point after Goku or Trunks (depending on the version) nearly [[spoiler: seals him with the Evil Containment Wave]]. He tells Goku Black that they can no longer afford to toy the with the mortals, otherwise their plans could be ruined. This is compounded in the manga version by his partner having a lot of trouble in his fight with Vegeta, even if it wasn't conclusive yet. [[spoiler: Black agrees, and says 'no more games or half-measures', before fusing with Future Zamasu to create Fused Zamasu]]. The reason why this is downplayed is because it's hinted that [[spoiler: Fused Zamasu]] was always their end goal and they wanted [[spoiler: Black to become as strong as possible before fusing]]. Future Zamasu nearly being [[spoiler: sealed]] only speeded up their endgame. The manga, however, plays this straight since [[spoiler: Black]] and he were forced to [[spoiler: fuse]] since Goku and Vegeta were beating them (''he'' could survive, but his comrade couldn't).
* GoodColorsEvilColors: His BattleAura is noticeably a darker purple than Present Zamasu. He has also long since [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope fallen into darkness]] and is helping Goku Black murder mortals, while Present Zamasu is still in the [[VillainCorner process]] of turning.
* GoodPowersBadPeople: He shows the ability to heal people in the manga. Simply put, this Zamasu isn't the nicest guy around, so don't expect him to use that power on anybody but himself or Goku Black.
* {{Gotterdammerung}}: Goku Black and Future Zamasu wipe out all the gods in Future Trunks' timeline, making them the supreme gods of all 12 universes.
* HealingFactor: Thanks to [[spoiler:his CompleteImmortality, any wounds he suffers quickly heal, to the extent that not even Goku ''blasting his head clean off'' did more than slow him down for a few seconds.]]
* HealingHands: At least in the ''Super'' manga, he has the ability to heal much like Kibito.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Goku Black get along extremely well. They both fight perfectly in-sync with each other, live together, and Zamasu treats [[spoiler:Black]] as an equal to the point of lamenting that [[spoiler: Black]] didn't wish for immortality on the Super Dragon Balls. He even gives [[spoiler:Black]] advice on how to get stronger off of Goku. Interesting, he doesn't see [[spoiler:Black]] as a comrade or friend, but as a kindred spirit. [[spoiler:This all makes sense once we learned that Black is an alternate version of Present Zamasu. So the only person Zamasu likes and treats as an equal is literally himself.]]
* HypocrisyNod: He hates mortals and believes that their [[FinalSolution complete destruction]] will create a utopia. Yet, he ends up allying himself with Goku Black, the EvilTwin of the very mortal [[TheHero Son Goku]]. Zamasu acknowledges the inconsistency in one sentence and just moves on with his plan.
* ItsAllAboutMe: [[spoiler:For all his and Goku Black's talk about carrying out the will of the Gods, the fact that he and his AlternateSelf think themselves as being "supreme gods", makes his goals less about wiping out perceived mistakes of the Gods, and more about wiping out perceived mistakes to ''him''.]] It says a lot that ''literally'' the only being he doesn't treat with spite and disrespect is [[spoiler:himself from an alternate timeline. Future Trunks and Future Mai even call him out on being nothing but a selfish prick while using the Mafuba on him.]]
* InvincibleVillain: He falls into this since he is [[spoiler: an immortal and can't technically be defeated despite being beating up by Future Trunks and Goku. Although Future Trunks in the anime and Goku in the manga manage to trap him in the Evil Containment Wave, it didn't stick since they forgot the seal. After fusing with Goku Black, [[KarmaHoudini Future Zamasu can't be defeated since Fusion Zamasu is a different entity]]]].
* JumpedAtTheCall: It only takes a few words from Goku Black to get him onboard "Project Zero Mortals" with a huge SlasherSmile. They even hug to seal their alliance.
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: [[spoiler:After Goku Black murders Gowasu, Zamasu is at first horrified and rushes to his master's side]]. Though after a few words from Goku Black, he immediately joins him, assisting him in murdering all the other gods in the universes before going on to wipe out mortals. In the manga, Beerus calls this him showing "his true colors", implying that he was always one bad day away from going down this route anyway.
* KarmaHoudini: Only due to a technicality. [[spoiler: Since a fusion character is considered a new being upon their birth (like Gotenks and Vegito), Fusion Zamasu isn't Future Zamasu. Therefore, Future Zamasu as an individual will never be made to answer for his crimes since the Potara fusion is permanent]].
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: He rubs in Goku's face that Goku Black murdered his family after taking his body and killing him in front of them with it. He did this while Black impaled Goku into a wall (through ''Zamasu's'' abdomen, no less).
* KillTheGods: In the future timeline, Goku Black and he murdered all the gods in the multiverse so they alone can rule as the 'supreme god' and promote their view of justice, which is to wipe out all mortals.
* LackOfEmpathy: Like all other versions of Zamasu, he feels no qualms when it comes to killing all the mortals. However special mention goes to how he react towards his own master's death, although initially he acts surprised when Gowasu dies, once Black confirms that he always wanted to do this, rather than calling him out on how he killed his mentor he simply ask who the killer is and upon confirming that he is an AlternateTimeline Zamasu, he immediately and gladly joins him in his "Project Zero Mortals", completely ignoring that this guy just killed his master, with a big SlasherSmile to boot. The next time he meets Gowasu from a different timeline, [[spoiler:he and Black quickly tries to blast him to smithereens without any shred of remorse for his former master]]. That's not even getting into his deciding to reveal to Goku that [[spoiler:Black's first act upon stealing his body was to slaughter his family]], purely to mentally torture him and be a sadistic prick.
* LeaveHimToMe: He stops Goku Black from killing Goku, as he wants that pleasure for himself.
* LightIsNotGood: He descends from the heavens on a pillar of golden light and he's a Kai, one of the Gods of Creation, but he's every bit as evil as Goku Black.
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: Only comparatively. In the anime, Future Zamasu had yet to jump off the slippery slope his Goku Black counterpart did before the latter arrives, being clearly shocked to see Gowasu dead and his killer standing above him. That said, he still joins Black and follows the exact same ideals.
* LosingYourHead: Goku ''blows Future Zamasu's head off'' during their fight. It just grows back before the smoke can even dissipate.
* MaskOfSanity: While he mostly acts calm and [[SmugSuper confident]], it's obvious by his {{Slasher Smile}}s and {{Motive Rant}}s that he has [[SanitySlippage long fallen off the deep end]].
* TheMedic: In the manga, he has the ability to heal with his [[HealingHands hands]] because of his status as a Supreme Kai attendant. So he restores Goku Black every time he's injured. Which works out very well since Goku Black becomes stronger upon recovering.
* MoralMyopia: He considers Future Trunks to be a sinner due to his history of time travel which is forbidden by the gods. He declares that since Trunks' actions made [[spoiler: Black's existence possible to begin with]], he was essentially responsible for killing all the people on Earth. [[spoiler: This is, of course, coming from someone who murdered all the other gods in the multiverse, which is also likely forbidden. He also killed mortals, something that only the Gods of Destruction are allowed to do, while he is a Supreme Kai]].
* MotiveRant: He spends most of his fight with [[spoiler: Future Trunks]] ranting about how mortals are evil and need to be wiped out, and how the Saiyans are the worst type of mortal since they have a lot a power, but no spiritual guidance. It gets to the point that this is practically a character quirk of Future Zamasu and he's fully aware of it, saying how he likes hearing himself talk.
* MultiversalConqueror: Goku Black and his ambitions aren't limited to ''one'' universe. They desire a ''multiverse'' free of mortals. For this reason, [[spoiler: they slaughtered all the other gods so no one could oppose them]]. This gets them called out as hypocrites by Vegeta and Gowasu since [[spoiler: they're gods murdering gods, yet they still claim to be good and promoting justice]]. In the manga, they want to spread their terror to other timelines.
* MyFutureSelfAndMe: In Future Trunks' timeline, [[spoiler:Future Zamasu is allied with Goku Black, who turns out to be Zamasu from the present timeline.]]
* {{Narcissist}}: On top of being a [[TheFightingNarcissist fighting narcissist]], Future Zamasu shows the more standard version. While giving a MotiveRant to Goku and Vegeta, who have started arguing and are no longer listening, Future Zamasu isn't annoyed and admits that he enjoys hearing himself talk.
* NeverMyFault: During a MotiveRant, he and Black openly blame Future Trunks for their own rampage to his face, stating that had Trunks not broken the time travel taboo, [[spoiler: Goku would have died, Black/Present Zamasu would never have been interested in taking Goku's body, and none of this would be happening. Of course, considering the fact that Future Zamasu almost immediately jumped on board with Black's plan, as well as Black's claim that Future Zamasu ''always'' wanted to kill Gowasu (which Zamasu doesn't deny), it's clear that Future Zamasu was a heartless monster long before Trunks did a damn thing.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler: Future Zamasu and Black]] try to invoke this on Future Trunks, saying that his time-traveling enabled [[spoiler:more Time Rings, allowing Black/Zamasu to steal Goku's body]].
* NiceJobFixingItVillain:
** By revealing himself to the Z-Fighters, it gave them conclusive evidence that Black and Zamasu are connected in a way, allowing Goku and Vegeta to tell Beerus and Whis about this and have them re-investigate Present Zamasu. He also inadvertently saved Goku's life as while they were wrong in the theory with Zamasu and Black, Present Zamasu is just about to murder Gowasu and steal Goku's body and Beerus's intervention prevents that from happening. Essentially he inadvertently stops the loop from repeating itself again.
** He's fully immortal and could only be sealed away due to the fact that it was near to flat out impossible to kill him, but sealing him would have given him a chance to start anew if someone managed to release him, like King Piccolo. However, when he decided to take the kid gloves off and combine into Fused Zamasu, it dulled his immortality, allowing Future Trunks to cut him down. What really did him in, however, was [[spoiler: Future Zeno erasing him from existence along with the rest of the timeline]].
* NighInvulnerable: He is an [[spoiler: immortal, and can survive ''anything''. He shrugs off being shish-kebabbed and having a Final Flash explode in his face by Future Trunks, and regrows his head after Goku blows it off. He even uses his invulnerability to his advantage by grappling Trunks and Goku together and allowing Black to smack all three of them head on with a powered up Kamehameha knocking the two of them out.]]
* NominalHero: In ''Xenoverse 2'', Zamasu is summoned by Chronoa to assist with an anomaly. He is happy to help, but makes it very clear he hates mortals and still intends to carry out his Zero Mortals Plan once he's dealt with the present issues.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: He is merciless when dealing with [[spoiler: Goku, trying to end him quickly instead of playing around. He also doesn't mind Goku Black joining him in the kill and actually holds Goku and Future Trunks down so Goku Black can hit them with his Kamehameha. His biggest flaw is that he tends to go into {{Motive Rant}}s, which allowed Trunks to beat him up and fire a Final Flash at him. Even then, the moment he realizes that Trunks/Goku (depending on the version) had a way to bypass his immortality using the Evil Containment Wave, he immediately fuses with Black, not wanting to take any more chances with underestimating the mortals]].
* NoSell: [[SoLastSeason By this point in the story]] Zamasu is remarkably easy to wound, even for the lower-tier characters... but his immortality means no injury he takes is permanent. Nor does he seem to feel pain anymore. As a result, ''anything'' the much stronger protagonists throw at him, he is able to brush off.
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: In Episode 64, Bulma flirts with and tries to seduce him; Zamasu just glares at her and knocks her out.
* NotSoInvincibleAfterAll: His CompleteImmortality leaves him arrogant and constantly leaving himself open, believing Goku and the others pose no threat to him whatsoever. He's coldly awakened to this when he's [[spoiler:nearly trapped by the Evil Containment Wave; he freaks out when he realizes that even if he can't die, he ''can'' still be stopped and sealed away.]]
* OhCrap:
** Has one when he realizes [[spoiler: Vegeta is ''overpowering'' Black.]]
** Hat yet another one when [[spoiler: Future Trunks uses the Mafuba on him, and he realizes he may actually be defeated.]]
** He has one much earlier, chronologically speaking. [[spoiler:When he sees Goku Black has killed his master, Gowasu.]]
* OmniscientMoralityLicense: Much like Goku Black, he thinks he has one. He believes that [[spoiler: killing all the mortals in the universe will create a [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans paradise]] since mortals are [[AlwaysChaoticEvil evil by nature]] and, [[AGodAmI as a god]], he has a duty to promote justice. He especially feels that upstart, god-fighting jerks like Goku are unneeded]]. Present Zamasu isn't much better since [[spoiler: he is willing to murder his own master to advance his goals]].
* OnlyFriend: The only person [[spoiler: Black]] regards as an equal and shares a good relationship with. [[spoiler: It quickly becomes clear that the reason is because they are ''literally'' the same person.]]
* OrcusOnHisThrone: He largely stayed behind the scenes for [[spoiler: Black's entire assault on Earth, only arriving in person when Goku and Vegeta arrive in the future to fight Black.]]
* PitifulWorms: He outright describes the mortals as "insignificant worms" at one point. Which is all the more jarring for him when [[spoiler:he's nearly trapped by the Evil Containment Wave, forcing him to acknowledge that Goku and co. ''do'' pose a threat to his and Black's plans.]]
* PsychopathicManchild: Even more so than Black. This is shown very well in the manga when Goku and Vegeta start to easily beat him and Black. Left with seemingly no back-up plan, he angrily yells at his alternate counterpart who had pushed him into criminality and promised him so much.
-->'''Future Zamasu:''' Dammit. This was not what was supposed to happen. Dammit!
-->'''Black''': Get up! What do you think I made you immortal for!?
-->''(Future Zamasu glares at Black, gets up, and grabs him by the shirt; Black stares at him dumbfounded)''
-->'''Future Zamasu:''' YOU NEVER TOLD ME THIS WOULD HAPPEN!!! Didn't you say you could control the entire universe by combining our power?!
** It's also shown when Goku honestly questions what he's planning to do after Vegeta kills Black. Trunks summarizes it as the biggest damage it's possible for an immortal to take- psychological damage.
-->'''Goku:''' You do realize that you won't be able to do a thing on your own, right? Aren't you frustrated? [[UnwittingPawn You were used by your other self.]]
-->'''Future Zamasu:''' ENOUGH! SILENCE, MORTAL!
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Both him and [[spoiler: Black]] blamed everything on Trunks, blaming him for the creation of a time ring by breaking a taboo among gods by time traveling and saving Goku from his heart disease, and as such, are cleaning the world from the sins of mortals. Basically, they're saying none of this would have happened if he and Bulma had done nothing to stop the Androids.
--> '''Future Zamasu''': Open your eyes! You are a vile sinner!
--> '''Goku Black''': You both enabled and inspired us!
--> '''Future Zamasu''': You helped to light the flame of our justice. You helped to launch Project Zero Mortals!
--> '''Goku Black''': So the next time you mourn your people, remember they're dead because of you!
* RedemptionRejection: In Episode 63, [[spoiler: Gowasu comes to the future alongside Shin to lecture both Black and Future Zamasu on their actions and give them a LastSecondChance, begging them to stop what they're doing and revive everyone they've killed with the Super Dragon Balls. Instead, Black and Zamasu inform him that they destroyed the Super Dragon Balls after using them to grant their own wishes, and try to kill Gowasu on the spot; Gowasu is only saved by Goku and Vegeta's intervention.]]
* RedHerring: Amusingly, to himself. We are led to believe he is the same Zamasu Goku and Beerus met in the past, with Goku Black being a clone. He is actually his future counterpart, and Goku Black [[spoiler: is a Present Zamasu from an erased timeline]]. His first words with Goku are ExactWords:
--> '''Future Zamasu''': I came here specifically to see you.
* ShutUpKirk: When Trunks calls him and Goku Black out on their genocidal rampage, calling them nothing more than murderers. In response, Black and Zamasu go off on a MotiveRant, stating that everything that's happening is Trunks' fault because he [[ButterflyOfDoom went back in time and saved Goku from the heart virus]], breaking the gods' time travel taboo in the process; had Trunks just let Goku die as he was originally supposed to, then [[spoiler:Goku never would have met Zamasu, Zamasu would never have stolen Goku's body, and Black himself would have never existed.]] Basically, they're saying that if he and Bulma did nothing to stop the Androids, none of this would have happened.
* SmugSnake: He comes off as this since he relies heavily on his [[spoiler: immortality]] to get ahead instead of his own fighting talent. Because of this, he keeps dropping his guard and going in {{Motive Rant}}s about his own superiority. The moment he gets an inkling that he can lose when he was trapped in Future Trunks' [[spoiler: Evil Containment Wave]], he has a major VillainousBreakdown and immediately [[spoiler: fuses with Goku Black]] to assure victory.
* SmugSuper: He takes great pride in his [[spoiler: immortality, taking joy when he experiences what should be a fatal wound, only for him to fully heal and continue fighting. During his fight with Future Trunks, he lets him get stabbed with his sword and takes a Final Flash which he does not even bother to dodge, just to show off that he's NighInvulnerable. Trunks notices this is his biggest weakness: he has a habit of letting his guard down after taking a hit due to his immortality. This allows Trunks to knock him away long enough to blast Black away with the Galick Gun. Later, he's nearly trapped by the Evil Containment Wave because he just stands there and doesn't even bother to dodge.]]
* SquishyWizard: PlayedWith. While the manga version of this Zamasu has all of Kibito Kai's abilities, his overall power is decreased from his anime counterpart, to only around ''Cell Games'' levels. While the anime version of Future Zamasu can trade blows with Super Saiyan Blue Goku, the manga version gets beaten up easily by Super Saiyan God Goku and admits that he's moderately weaker than Super Saiyan 1 Goku (Goku confirms this and states that he's far weaker than Super Saiyan 2 Trunks as well), despite the latter not being much stronger than he was in the Buu arc. Goku even powers down to [=SS1=] after saying Zamasu's not worth using Blue against.[[note]]Zamasu takes advantage of this to ambush him with his paralysis power.[[/note]] If he wasn't an [[spoiler: immortal]], Trunks by himself would have killed him and even then he's utterly helpless before someone like Goku to the point that Goku lampshades that he can't kill all the mortals since he lacks physical strength.
** His paralysis seems far stronger than Shin's. While Shin was able to paralyze a rusty [=SS2=] Gohan with some effort (at most a few times stronger than him), it was implied in the manga that Future Zamasu could paralyze ''Super Saiyan God'' Goku (easily dozens of times stronger if not hundreds)... if he could ever catch him.
** His HealingHands ability is tremendously useful for Black in the manga, as it makes him an invincible medic even if he can't hold a candle to God-level powers on his own. Black exploits this and his body's near-death power-ups to level up rapidly. He also makes use of magic materialization to snatch items away from Goku and give them to Black. Finally, he's a...
* StoneWall: Despite (in the manga at least) being far weaker than some [[SoLastSeason late Cell and early Buu era characters]], and little more than a gnat power-wise compared to Goku Black, he's completely invulnerable to any attack so it doesn't matter. He puts his [[spoiler:immortality]] to good use by shielding his partner from anything the heroes can throw at him.
* StoryBreakerPower: He eventually becomes an [[spoiler: immortal, allowing him to survive any injury including being impaled and blasted by a Final Flash and a Kamehameha that disables Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Future Trunks. Goku even complains about how unfair this is. However, this is subverted when Goku/Trunks learns the Mafuba, giving them a chance to disable Zamasu without killing him]].
* SuddenlyShouting: Dips into this while holding Goku and Future Trunks down so Black can blast them with a Kamehameha.
-->'''Zamasu''': I want both of you to listen to me very carefully here. For your persistent insolence and repeated affronts toward a deity, you will now reap ''THE SWIFT AND SEVERE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR ACTIONS!!!''
* SuperpowerLottery: On top of being a PhysicalGod that can trade blows with Super Saiyan Goku, himself stronger than Shin (or [=SSB Goku=] instead in the anime), Future Zamasu is [[spoiler: an immortal. Being impaled through the chest, hit point-blank with a Final Flash, and hit dead on by Super Saiyan Rosé Black's Kamehameha does no damage to him. Granted he specifically [[ImmortalitySeeker wished for the immortality himself]], so he didn't really play the lottery]]. In the manga, he has all of Kibito Kai's abilities such as telekinesis, the [[HealingHands ability to heal others]], magic materialization, and the ability to paralyze others' movements.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: In the manga, both him and Goku Black clearly do not like each other due to differing views on what they define as power, but they reluctantly worked together in order to carry out their Zero Mortals Plan where Black murders any mortals that Zamasu could not do even with his immortality, while the latter looked down on Black due to forsaking immortality for power. Indeed, when Goku and Vegeta managed to gain the upper hand on them, it caused them to briefly suffer from infighting before Black suggest that they fuse.
* ThisCannotBe: His reaction when [[spoiler:Future Trunks/Goku uses the Evil Containment Wave on him]], he is completely shocked at how it is possible.
-->'''Zamasu:''' NO, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! IT CAN'T END THIS WAY!! '''I'M AN INVINCIBLE, EVERLASTING GOD!!!''' '''''[[BigNo NOOOOOO!!!!]]'''''
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Is very fond of tea, a trait he picks up from his fellow Kais.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: He didn't take Future Trunks seriously, thinking he's just a bug. Then, [[spoiler:he gets trapped in the Evil Containment Wave and sealed. The only reason he was able to escape is because they forgot the talisman to complete the seal]].
* UnskilledButStrong: Although he is well-trained and powerful, he heavily relies on his immortality to the point of not dodging or blocking attacks. Instead, he chooses to be a meat shield for Goku Black or using combination attacks instead of fighting on his own. This gets him in trouble more than once where he gets sucker punched and nearly trapped by the [[spoiler: Evil Containment Wave]].
* TheUsurper: Unique among Zamasu's incarnations in that he didn't do the usurping himself. Goku Black kills Future Gowasu and handed him the Potaras instead. However, Future Zamasu had already been desiring to do so and jumps at the chance.
* VictoryByEndurance: In the manga, he's implied to be even weaker than Goku's [=SS1=] form and isn't strong enough to instantly kill Shin, making him weaker than even the likes of Cell. ''However'', his immortality means he cannot be killed by anything. He exploits this in his fight with Goku, daring him to continue his attacks all day- after all, Goku isn't an android or Majin and so will ''eventually'' run out of energy, while Zamasu will be no worse for wear no matter what happens. In the anime, he's a lot stronger, but still relies on the same general strategy.
* VillainHasAPoint: When he fights Future Trunks for the first time, he gives a rant about how mortals used their god-given gifts to kill themselves, showing how foolish mortals are. Although Future Trunks has every right to tell him to [[ShutUpHannibal shut up]], he does have a point. In Future Trunks' timeline, the Earth was devastated for almost two decades by the androids, killing machines created by one man who misused his god-given brilliance to get revenge on Goku, who was dead by the time he activated them. Those same creations also [[LaserGuidedKarma killed him upon their activation]].
* VillainousBreakdown: He freaks out when he is on the receiving end of the [[spoiler: Mafuba thanks to Future Trunks and even after being briefly sealed he's still shook up from it, having finally realized that the mortals ''do'' pose a threat to his and Black's plans.]]
* VillainousFriendship: He considers Goku Black and himself to be "kindred spirits", and they carry out mass-murder on mortals together. When they're not out killing mortals, they live together in a house outside the city and have tea together. [[spoiler: After learning that Goku Black is a version of Zamasu, their relationship makes a lot more sense. He's basically his own best friend]].
* VillainRespect: In ''Xenoverse 2'', as a mentor, the Future Warrior is the only mortal who Zamasu shows genuine respect to, even more so than Goku. He thinks of the Future Warrior so highly he offers to let them serve beneath him and to even give them the position of Supreme Kai.
* VillainsOutShopping: He and Black are seen chilling out in what looks to be a summer house located in a beautiful field drinking tea and admiring the view outside the city.
* WalkingSpoiler: The fact that there are at least two different Zamasus is a spoiler since all the characters believed that Future Zamasu and Present Zamasu are the same person.
* WeCanRuleTogether: In ''Xenoverse 2'', as a mentor he's so impressed with the Future Warrior while being assisted by them, he offers them the position of Supreme Kai and to serve under him once the Zero Mortals Plan is enacted.
* WhamLine: Episode 56 gives us a real shocker:
--> '''Zamasu''': [[spoiler: That's enough. I will not allow you to act on your own any further. I thought we had an agreement. Wasn't I supposed to be the one who gets the honor of destroying him?]]
* WhatTheHellHero: Although he's far from a hero by this point, Gowasu lectures both Future Zamasu and Goku Black about their crimes against mortals and the gods. He then begs them to used the Super Dragon Balls to undo all the damage they did. Black scoffs at him and tells his old master that he destroyed the Super Dragon Balls. He then tries to kill Gowasu, for the third time.
* WouldYouLikeToHearHowTheyDied: He and Goku Black pull this on Goku for the sake of [[ForTheEvulz being dicks]], smugly revealing that in the original unaltered timeline, the very first thing Black did after [[GrandTheftMe stealing Goku's body]] was to go on murdering Goku's family.
