Context Characters / ChainChronicleSoldiers

Go To

The primary Melee class of the game, Soldiers have the most stopping power out of all classes in close range. While they will have problems facing ranged attack, both magic or arrows, they are the go-to choice for taking out heavily-armored enemies.

Book 2 introduces the Martial Artist subclass, who use their own fists and knuckle-class weapons. While they have lower damage-per-attack compared to most sword-using Soldiers, they compensate for this by doing ''more'' attacks per round by comparison.

Go [[Characters/ChainChronicle here]] to go back to the main character index of ''Chain Chronicle''.
----
!Tropes common to the Soldier Class:
* CompetitiveBalance: The soldier class has the most variants in type. The Hero (and most Blade users) is a JackOfAllStats, most of the club users are [[MightyGlacier Mighty Glaciers]], then there are some LightningBruiser like Trystan. Martial Artists, on the other hand, get by with lower damage per hit but make up for that by attacking ''much'' faster than regular soldiers.
* StatusBuff: While some soldiers have the ability to buff themselves or their allies, this is practically a feature for all Martial Artists, though with a catch: they must first hit an enemy at least ten times, which then causes the effect to trigger.

!!Carlo
-->''"Ah, I suppose it wouldn't bother me."''
->Voiced by: Creator/AkiraIshida (Japanese)
[[quoteright:155:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/carlo10.jpg]]
A mercenary of the Warrior's Guild.
----
* NoOneGetsLeftBehind: Averted. In his story, he and the Volunteer Army were surrounded by monsters (along with several caravan guards), with little chance of victory. In a desperate attempt, the caravan guards (who happened to know him) told Carlo and the group to take the goods, keep it safe, and run. And he did, almost without hesitation. He does acknowledge their sacrifice.
%% * ZenSurvivor: Implied.

!!Eddy
-->''"I think I can do this."''
->Voiced by: Creator/MaayaUchida (Japanese)
[[quoteright:155:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eddy.jpg]]
A youth who recently joined the Soldier's Guild after losing his parents to the war.
----
* ChildSoldiers: [[DiscussedTrope Discussed]]. A villager he rescued in his quest commented on how he's taking up arms despite being so young. He also remarked that if the war against Black Army never happened, he could've just lived in peace.
* DisappearedDad '''and''' MissingMom: Both of them died prior to his story.
* KidHero: One of the youngest recruitable male Arcana, and certainly fits the archetype.
* ParentalSubstitute: He considers Phoena to be this, remarking that she really looks like her mother.
* PrecociousCrush: Also towards Phoena.
* TookALevelInBadass: Not in-gameplay, but this is a major focus in his story.

!!Greg
-->''"It's part of a warrior's job to be unreasonable."''
->Voiced by: Creator/AkiraIshida (Japanese)
[[quoteright:155:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/greg.jpg]]
A warrior known for his trained body. His wife and daughter were killed in the capital, and his soul burns for vengeance.
----
* DrowningMySorrows: In his character quest, he was seen drinking in the tavern to console himself.
* FriendToAllChildren: Implied. He comments that he's used to dealing with kids. He even calmed a kid that caught up in a fight.
* HotBlooded: Not the good kind. When he heard of a Black Army attack in the nearby village, he rushes to the scene despite being roaring drunk. His recklessness gave him some injury, though he shrugs it off.
* RevengeBeforeReason: The whole point of his quest. He also has a skill that increases his power as more allies fall. He mellowed down a bit at the end of his quest.
* ScarsAreForever: He has several scars in his face and probably more.

!!Eidal
-->''"I will protect with my axe."''
->Voiced by: Creator/AkiraIshida (Japanese)
[[quoteright:155:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eidal.jpg]]
A warrior of the earth sprites living in the southern Maze Pass. A typical earth sprite, he is stoic, dutiful, and prideful.
----
* DeclarationOfProtection: First to his homeland, then to the Volunteer Army.
* EyepatchOfPower: In his helmet.
* EyeScream: Has happened to him before considering the scar on his right eye.
* IOweYouMyLife: How he joined the Volunteer Army. This cause a conflict in his quest, because while he wanted to join them to repay his gratitude, part of him also wanted to stay in his homeland to defend it.
%%* OldSoldier
* ScarsAreForever: On his right eye.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Two Star Arcana Soldiers]]

!!Azami
-->''"I await your command as my new master."''
->Voiced by: Creator/AyaneSakura (Japanese)
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/azami_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:Kunoichi of the Third Territory.]]

A kunoichi from the Third Territory, she was ordered by her feudal lord to expand her horizons. She does this via enlisting with the Volunteer Army, whose travels take them far beyond the borders of her homeland.
----
* CultureClash: Azami has ''some'' trouble understanding that what might be normal at the Nine Territories might not exactly proper in the Holy Kingdom... like using explosives to catch fish.
* HeroesGoneFishing: Her personal quest basically revolves around the Hero and the others trying to teach her how to fish properly, in this case ''not using explosives''.
%%* {{Ninja}}

!!Dengal
-->''"A true man lets his rhythm speak for him."''
->Voiced by: Creator/AkiraIshida (Japanese)
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dengal_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:The Earth Sprite Drummer.]]

An Earth Sprite musician from the Lake of Sand, he's a firm believer in the fact that everything moves to its own natural rhythm. He uses this as an inspiration for his music, both on the battlefield, and off it.

In the ''Death and Rebirth Suite'' chain story, it is revealed that he is part of a band together with the brothers Hassan and Hakim.
----
* BigFun: He's rather plump, and also quite a pleasant fellow.
* TheBigGuy: Serves as one in Musica's chain story as well as in Lake of Sand's special episode.
* DontThinkFeel: Has a unique method of braving the desert by marching to the tune of your own beat to make it more fun.
* DreadlockRasta: One of the only two people who wear their hair in this style in the entire game.
* OurDwarvesAreAllTheSame: A minor version; compared to other Earth Sprites, his facial features is rather clean, and his body is more stout and muscular looking than regular Earth Sprites, likely from being influenced by the Lake of Sand's culture.

!!Dusty
-->"Come, come! Let's put my wares to the test!"
->Voiced by: Creator/JunichiYanagita (Japanese), Creator/ChristopherWehkamp (English)
[[quoteright:155:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dusty.jpg]]
A merchant associated with the Vice Capital, he's hot blooded enough to fight on the battlefield himself in search of potential customers and powerful weapons to sell.
----
* BadassesWearBandanas: As a 2-star arcana with strength comparable to a ''4-star'' once he reach full Limit Break, he's definitely badass.
* DiskOneNuke: If you have poor luck in drawing at least a decent 3-star Soldier, he could be this when he reach full Limit Break; his strength at that point is comparable to a non-Limit Break 4-star Soldier, and could become a good low-cost addition in some setups.
** Even at late game, he can still be very useful in [[MarathonLevel Titan's Cave]], which enhanced the power of 1-star and 2-star arcanas by 2,5 times. As a result, his Attack stat at full Limit Break can reach ''12,000'' for this quest.
* IntrepidMerchant: He'll travel anywhere to sell his goods...or to acquire more goods to sell. In his quest, he's fighting monsters while selling his goods, infomercial-style, ''at the same time''.
** He has entire events dedicated to this trope, the ever-popular Dusty's War Sale. In this event, he traveled around the world in search of powerful weapons to sell (and to promote the quality of his goods by live demonstration), and will reward some of them after completing the event quests.
* LargeHam: Imagine {{Creator/Billy Mays}} as a weapons merchant in a fantasy setting, and you got Dusty.
* WalkingArmory: His character art has him carrying several weapons on his back, presumably his trade.

!!Haruka
-->"They're gonna pay for ruining the crops!"
->Voiced by: Creator/MaayaUchida (Japanese)
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haruka_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:A Simple Farmgirl.]]

A farm girl from the Nine Territories of Fire, she joined the Volunteer Army to get away from the constant fighting in her homeland, but some urges are just ''too'' strong to ignore: presented with an un-tilled field and farm tools, Haruka's first urge is to work it, if only so that when the field's owners do return, they can get back to using it again.

She, along with Jedah, take the center stage of the ''Sprite Warriors'' chain story, where she's forced to knock some sense (literally) into troublemakers who're just making it harder for the common folk to even grow ''anything'' on their farms, due to their constant fighting.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: Became one of the protagonists in Jedah's Chain Story.
* BerserkButton: Anyone who wrecks fields for no reason, or even if they have a reason. Being from a peasant family, she truly understands the value of foods. As such, anyone who does not appreciate that for their own selfish reasons will pay the price. [[CallToAgriculture Just]] [[CoolAndUnusualPunishment ask]] [[spoiler: Shuza, Yoshitsugu, and Rafaga]].
** The sight of a ruined field seems to be one as well, as her ability makes her more powerful if the battlefield is a wasteland.
* FarmGirl: A bit obvious, but one part that ''was'' LostInTranslation is the fact that Haruka also talks with a thick rural accent.

!!Lynda
-->"I'll take 'em all out in one go."
->Voiced by: Creator/MaayaUchida (Japanese)
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lynda_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:Easy-Going Lynda.]]

An Earth Sprite warrior who joins the Volunteer Army when she learns that they've been doing well smashing some heads in, and wants in the fun.
----
* TheDitz: By her own admission.
--> ''That complicated stuff goes over my head anyway, so I'll let the Captain worry about it.''
* DungeonBypass: What she does during her personal quest, where she decides that the best way to get out of a confusing maze is to just keep on making holes in the walls until she finds an exit.
* LeeroyJenkins: At worst, she can be very reckless, giving a small problem for the Volunteer Army in one Side Story.

!!Marga
-->"You shouldn't rely solely on what you can see."
->Voiced by: Saki Hoshino (Japanese)
[[quoteright:155:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marga.jpg]]
A female sprite unaffiliated with a tribe. She roam the caverns of Maze Pass, offering guides to other tribes traveling the caverns.
----
* BoldExplorer: For the Maze Pass' numerous caverns.
* DontThinkFeel: How she navigates caverns. She explored caverns for so long that she can even navigate easily though caverns she visited for the first time. She also gave this advice to Pirika, to hilarious results.
* GeoEffects: Has increased power in cavern areas, which makes her a decent choice for Titan's Cave.
* GlacierWaif: Her small and slender figure doesn't stop her from lugging around a massive backpack.
* GogglesDoNothing: While it might protect her from dust (considering her job), it does nothing else and she wears it on her forehead.

!!Mia
-->"It's time for this show's opening act!"
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mia_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:The Knife-Throwing Acrobat.]]

A young girl who grew up as part of a circus act, she joins the Volunteer Army to polish her balancing act and knife-throwing skills, which will come in handy in making shows more exciting.
----
* CircusBrat: Was raised in the circus, and she still regularly trains her skills during her spare time.
* HappilyAdopted: Treats the circus troupe as her family, even going so far to call the ring leader "dad".
%% * KnifeThrowingAct: What she's known for.

!!Rayo
-->"I'm not gonna let someone like you boss me around."
->Voiced by: Creator/JunichiYanagita (Japanese)
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raioh_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:Hotblooded Forest Sprite.]]

A warrior of the Thousand Rivers tribe, Rayo decides to join the Volunteer Army because he thought that the Hero was tough enough to ''maybe'' survive a good brawl.
----
* BilingualBonus: Rayo means "Thunderbolt" in Spanish.
* BloodKnight: As with all Thousand Rivers tribesmen.
* DumbMuscle: Is he ever. Unlike Rafalgar, who actually has smarts despite being called a battle-maniac by Pirika, Rayo isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.
* EntertaininglyWrong: He thinks that because his chief wasn't going out challenging people to a holy war, that the latter was weak and a coward. Which gives him the idea that he could THEN challenge Rafalgar for leadership. A short scuffle later, Rayo was lying on his back, while Rafalgar was laughing at his foolishness.
* GeoEffects: Rayo fights much better in forest maps, getting a boost to Attack and movement in woodland areas.
* HotBlooded: Again, unlike Rafalgar, his hotheaded nature is much more simpler.

!!Ryouta
-->"I wanna be just like him."
->Voiced by: Creator/MaayaUchida (Japanese)
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryouta_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:Yearning For Glories Past.]]

A boy from the Nine Territories, he joins the Volunteer Army so that he could become as strong as his "big bro", who he respects so much.
----
%%* ChildSoldiers
* HeroWorshipper: For Oguma. This turned out to be a good thing, since watching him grow stronger is what gave Oguma another reason to live.
* TakeUpMySword: By the end of Oguma's Chain Story, Oguma encouraged Ryouta to follow on his footsteps. And if the questline reward is any indication, Oguma literally gave him a sword to use. Actually equipping Juzumaru on him isn't really recommended though...

!!Yoyo
-->"Stay away from me!"
->Voiced by: Creator/MaayaUchida (Japanese)
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yoyo_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:The Crybaby Warrior.]]

A sensitive flame sprite with low self-esteem, and a penchant for crying when teased, Yoyo joined the Volunteer Army to gain self-confidence.
----
%%* CowardlyLion
* ProneToTears: Ridiculously so.
* TheSoCalledCoward: Despite having a weak willpower, he still sticks with the group in one Side Story, even providing assistance to Kiki.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Three Star Arcana Soldiers]]

!!Aida
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aida_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:The Earth Sprite Entepreneur.]]

An earth sprite merchant that the Hero and Phoena ran into one day while shopping, Aida decides to tag along the Volunteer Army when she decides to move her shop back home. That, and she thinks that there's opportunity to be had with the group.
----
* BerserkButton: Harming her trade goods is a no-no. See how she goes nuts in her introduction, after a monster attack destroys the marketplace she was in.
* IntrepidMerchant: If one Side Story is any indication, she used her connection with the Sage Towers to provide the Volunteer Army with cheap foods...courtesy of Melchior.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: The reason she tagged along is because she sensed a business potential with them.

%%!!Baiset
%%[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baiset_icon.png]]
%%[[caption-width-right:100:The Red Demon Swordsman.]]

%%An ogre warrior banished from his homeland for letting a close friend die in his stead, Baiset found himself working for Gilbert and the Vice Capital's guild alliance as a bodyguard. He was eventually asked by Gilbert to lend his strength to the Volunteer Army's cause.
%%----

%%!!Bolsa
%%[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bolsa_icon.png]]
%%[[caption-width-right:100:The Music Box Artisan.]]

%%An earth sprite artisan, Bolsa specializes in making mechanical music boxes. She joins the Volunteer Army in the hopes that it would inspire her to come up with another tune to use in her creations.
%%----

%%!!Diez
%%[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diez_icon.png]]
%%[[caption-width-right:100:The Boisterous Older Sister.]]

%%The oldest of three forest sprite sisters of the Golden Fruit tribe, Diez gets fed up with the boring life she had in their village, and sets off for the big cities in the Holy Kingdom. After being saved from what might have become an unfortunate instance of dine-and-dash, she joins the Volunteer Army full-time since it guarantees regular meals ''and'' pay.
%%----

%%!!Dodogher
%%[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dodogher_icon.png]]
%%[[caption-width-right:100:The Steel Mercenary.]]

%%An earth sprite mercenary, Dodogher first encountered the Volunteer Army when he was saved from being surrounded by countless Black Army soldiers. As a sign of thanks, he joins in their journey, whether they wanted him to or not.
%%----

!!Ernest
[[quoteright:171:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ernest.jpg]]
An old fisherman with a huge chip on his shoulder. He's the first character you've met after you sailed out of Yggdra.
----
* TheAloner: Noted to be a bit cranky and reticent.
* BeardOfSorrow: Has a thick one, and he constantly contemplates when he will ever came home again.
* ShoutOut / WholePlotReference: He has the characteristics of Ernest Hemingway's Literature/TheOldManAndTheSea. He even shared his name with Hemingway's first name. Also, his penchant for revenge against a huge beast (which eventually drains him emotionally) is very similar to the basic premise of Literature/MobyDick.
* TranquilFury: His yearning for revenge against the giant beast he targeted eventually turns into this, portrayed perfectly with his skill quote ("I'm gonna hang you on my wall!"), while also having a whopping ''14x'' damage multiplier with his skill. Also, his ability give him increased power in boss waves. Considering that the boss fights in Daybreak Ocean are all manners of sea creatures, this makes sense.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: Due to being stranded out of Yggdra. FridgeLogic kicks in once you remembered that the Volunteer Army was given a device to let them in and out of Yggdra easily, so why didn't he stay in Yggdra the next time Volunteer Army came home for, say, a Demon Raid?

%%!!Franz
%%[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/franz_icon.png]]
%%[[caption-width-right:100:The Double-Agent.]]
%%----

!!Guy
[[quoteright:186:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/guy.jpg]]
A V2 character who travels the world with Allie, his daughter, in tow.
----
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Allie certainly thinks so; Guy pampers her like a princess and shower her with flattering words. Not helped by the fact that after her [[spoiler: tearful confession of wanting her father to be with her more often]] in Guy's second quest, he literally never lets Allie go, carrying her on his shoulder.
* DoAnythingSoldier: A downplayed version of this. In his introduction, he said that he can do everything from manual labor to cooking. Considering that he got his daughter to feed and Volunteer Army always has jobs to do, he will get really busy.
* TheDividual: He and his daughter are counted as one character. Allie comments that she's the brains in the relationship while Guy's the brawn.
* TheDrifter: Guy doesn't like being tied down to one place, especially after his wife's death.
** This ends up being [[DeconstructedTrope deconstructed]] in his second quest, as he realized that while he has protected Allie from all manners of danger, he never really listened to what she wanted as a normal girl (like buying her new dresses or makeups) due to being stuck wandering from place to place without a steady job or income. [[spoiler: Luckily for Guy, all that Allie wanted is for her father to spend more time playing with her. BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor, Allie.]]
* IdiotHero: Despite joining the Volunteer Army ForGreatJustice, he didn't do so well in practice. At one point, he ''overturned an entire shop'' just to catch a thief along with all manners of destructive and insubordinate behavior, which ends up with him getting fired and using his pay to make up for the property's destruction.
* TheKlutz: Allie remarked that Guy is one, but he considers himself to be at least a ''hardworking'' klutz.
* ForGreatJustice: Joins the Volunteer Army out of his desire to rid the world of evil...so that none of them can put her daughter in danger.
* {{Tsundere}}: Allie to her dad is a familial version of this. Can you blame her with Guy being a dorky [[AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents father]]?
* WhyDoYouKeepChangingJobs: Allie says that he's just real picky about what he wanted to do. [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments Guy can't think of a comeback]] against this statement.

!!Haruaki
[[quoteright:155:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haruaki.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/AkiraIshida (Japanese), Brad Smeaton (English)
An ogre swordsman from the Nine Territories. The succession rule of his clan prevents him from taking over the clan because he only has one horn, and thus, branded an illegitimate child. As such, according to the tribal law, he has to fight his sister, Toka. He joined the party to escape this fate.

Received a 5-star upgrade along with Toka in the JP server, both of those currently unreleased in Global.
----
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: [[spoiler: His 5-star upgrade also comes with the revelation that he [[YouKillItYouBoughtIt eventually took up the leadership of his clan]], presumably to end the succession feud once and for all.]]
* BackToBackBadass: With Toka in his V2 upgrade character art.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: What he thinks of his clan. Can you blame him, though? Rules of his clan dictates that [[ExactWords only the eldest child with two horns may lead]], so either Toka kills him and became the eldest child, or he kills her to prove his legitimacy. Not helped by the fact that family members lower on the hierarchy conspires against ''both of them'' to have a chance of their own.
* BloodKnight: Notable as one of the few Nine Territories warrior that ''[[AvertedTrope doesn't]]'' display this trait, at least not overtly so.
* BrotherSisterTeam: With Toka, after Toka's questline has been completed.
** CainAndAbel: His relationship with Toka at the beginning. He's the Abel.
* DeathOfAThousandCuts: How his skill manifest in gameplay. It's notable that, while there are other characters with similar skill that can deal five or seven hits in succession, his skill deals ''eleven'' hits.
* DeathSeeker: In his introduction, he remarks that he wanted to join you to find a good death.
* GiveHerANormalLife: His goal for Toka. As for the method, see IDidWhatIHadToDo below.
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: Has the skill Ogre Killer, which allows him to deal extra damages to ogres. He happens to be an ogre himself.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: [[spoiler: Ordering a hit on his father to end the legitimacy rule so that Toka doesn't have to obey it anymore.]] [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Unfortunately]], this leads to potential conspirators ordering a hit on ''both'' Haruaki and Toka because they don't have anyone holding them back anymore, as commented by Toka.
* LeftHanging: If you never managed to recruit Toka, his questline may end up like this.
* OddFriendship: With [[HotBlooded Inuchiyo and Sakon]] in a Dusty's War Sale event.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: The 'warning' part is more subdued than [[BloodKnight his sister's]], but it's still there.
* RequiredPartyMember: For Toka's questline to continue, you must have a sufficently leveled Haruaki in your party. In their 5-star upgrade, the roles are reversed.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Inverted; despite being a death seeker at the beginning, he has no intention to die except by Toka's hands.
%%* ZenSurvivor
* ZeroApprovalGambit: [[spoiler:He had an assassin kill his and Toka's father]] to provide Toka another reason for living instead of just following the clan rules, even if the reason in question is hatred.

----
* EnergyAbsorption: Played with, [[spoiler:he can transfer energy to and from other's in Yuuri's Army]].

[[caption-width-right:200:The Lovestruck Young Noblewoman.]]

The only daughter of a noble family in the Holy Kingdom, Bernadette joins the Volunteer Army when she falls in love with the Hero at first sight. She's ''very'' possessive of him, to say the least.
----
* CharacterDevelopment: Bernadette goes from a bossy, stalkerish, and spoiled young noblewoman who figured that her looks and money would be enough to get her anything that she wanted (up to and including the affection of the Hero!) to a thoughtful young woman who realizes that the world didn't revolve around her.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Initially. If we believe Pirika, at one point, Bernadette clung to the hero 24-7, and threatened people with her massive axe if they tried to separate her. And god help them if the Hero gets hurt...
* CriticalStatusBuff: Reflected by her final skill, where Bernadette's attack score rises once her hit points drop below two-thirds.
* DeathOrGloryAttack: Bernadette's special involves sacrificing half her maximum HP in return to doing the same damage to all enemies surrounding her.
* LoveConfession: While Bernadette's attraction to the Hero was obvious to everyone from the beginning, she only ''formally'' "declares war" to Phoena at the climax of her final quest.
* LoveAtFirstSight: She decides that the Hero is her fated beloved after seeing him (and in fact actually tries to drag him off to get married immediately!) once. She follows him to the tavern and joins the Volunteer Army soon after.
* LoveTriangle: Deliberately invoked at the end of her last quest. In this case though, Bernadette had formally thrown the challenge to Phoena, while the latter's resolved to "protect" the Hero from Bernadette's advances.
** What makes this situation unique is that Bernadette is the only girl who's gotten attracted to the hero that's ''personally'' challenges Phoena about gaining the Hero's affection, and what's more, it's not treated as a joke.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Bernadette starts her final quest acting normal and helpful to the rest of the Volunteer Army members. In fact, it's so ''unlike'' her usual behavior around the Hero that Pirika is seriously worried about it.
* StalkerWithACrush: Spends a good part of her first quest tailing the Hero's party during a mission.

* ChildhoodFriends: With Kiki.
* EvilGloating: Does this to some knights that were trying to stop her after she first encounters the Hero, Phoena, and Pirika at the Holy Capital. Pirika actually calls her out on this.
--> '''Pirika:''' That sounded a hundred percent villainous, you know.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Gives Kiki a good bonk on the head when he starts to panic in the ''Howling in the Maze'' side-story.
* GradualRegeneration: Granted by her first ability.
* HypocriticalHumor: She scolds Pirika for active spoiled and childish, when this was ''exactly'' how she acted when the Hero first runs into her.
* RunningGag: People keep on mistaking Elda for a human child.
* StatusEffects: Her second ability adds a chance to cause the Daze status per attack, while her special ''guarantees'' Daze on hit.
* ThatWasNotADream: Nope, that wasn't at all Elda. [[spoiler:Kissing Kiki in the past, we mean.]]

A former sword meister, Gloria's life changed forever when she was suddenly ambushed one night and left for dead. Now she only burns for revenge, and will do anything to find out who went out of their way to ruin her life.
----
* CriticalStatusBuff: Gloria gains a bonus to her Attack and movement speed once her HP drops below half.
* DrowningMySorrows: When she wasn't obsessing on how to get her revenge, Gloria was doing this, and was a frequent visitor of the seedy dives located on Daybreak Island.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: It turns out, ''this'' was the reason why someone tried to have Gloria killed. [[spoiler:She had unwittingly stumbled upon an arms exchange between black-market smugglers, and corrupt members of Dawn Maritime.]]
* {{Knockback}}: A byproduct of her special attack.
* {{Revenge}}: The main focus of her Arcana quests, where she tries to track down the person who tried to have her murdered.
** RevengeBeforeReason: As one goes through her story, the player gets the idea that Gloria could have gone back to her life as a sword master had she just chosen ''not'' to find out why someone tried to murder her.
* SoWhatDoWeDoNow: When she finally gets her revenge, it's no surprise that she finds the achievement hollow, and starts to wonder what to do with the rest of her life. [[spoiler:She finally regains some of her idealism back thanks to Blossom.]]
* StatusBuff: The in-game reflection of her Main/{{Revenge}} schtick: Gloria gains a temporary boost to her Attack every time an ally is taken out of play.
* UnwittingPawn: What Gloria became. [[spoiler:The informant was using her to unknowingly eliminate all who were in the know about Dawn Maritime's corrupt dealings. Gloria was NOT pleased when she learns this.]]

A wandering bard that the Volunteer Army encounters while he was "performing" out in the wilds, he joins the Volunteer Army because he felt he'd find more receptive audiences for his music with them. He is the older brother of Hakim.

Though his own personal quest is really short, Hassan, and the band he eventually forms (with Nayel, Hakim, and Dengal), becomes one of the focal points of the ''Death and Rebirth Suite'' chain story.
----
* AnachronismStew: Hassan brand of music is apparently "classic" rock and roll. Why this is so is never explained.
* HonorBeforeReason: He wasn't bothered by the fact that the "audience" he was performing to when the Volunteer Army first encountered him was a horde of ''monsters''. He was just happy that it was finally an audience receptive to his brand of music.
* NoSell: Hakim is immune to the Slow status.
* TheRival: With Nayel, at first, since he couldn't stand Nayel's songs focusing primarily focusing on love and romance.
* SecretKeeper: Along with the rest of the band, for Nayel. [[spoiler:Because we can't very well reveal that Nayel is a ''girl'', now could we?]]
* StatusBuff: Hakim's special gives a temporary boost to his allies' Attack power.
** SupportPartyMember: He also does this while he's in the sub-party.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Has this relationship with Nayel. [[spoiler:Even AFTER he learned that Nayel was a girl.]]

[[caption-width-right:200:Tsuru's Laidback Vassal.]]

One of Lady Tsuru's most loyal vassals, Ibukis is also probably the least motivated of the lot. While skilled with the sword, her attitude toward anything resembling work leaves much to be desired.
----
* CriticalStatusBuff: Ibuki gains a bonus to her Attacker once her HP drops below 1/3rd.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Also present on her character sprite!
* ExperienceBooster: Ibuki's second ability grants a 10% experience bonus to any gained after a battle.
* NoHeroToHisValet: To Tsuru, whom she treats with, at ''best'', a casual level of respect.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: To be fair, no one could blame her for this. No one wants to be Melchior's, ahem, test subject after all.
* TheSlacker: Ibuki's the type who'd rather find a nice bit of shade to nap in rather than go out to fight.

[[caption-width-right:200:Ioh of the Two Blades.]]

A swordsman from the Vice Capital, he joins the Volunteer Army seemingly trying to avoid something, carrying with him a sword that he rarely uses. He has a girlfriend named Sara living at the Holy Capital, but he always seems to avoid talking about her.
----
* CriticalStatusBuff: Ioh gains even more DamageReduction once his HP drops below 1/3rd.
* DualWielding: One of the first the player will encounter with this fighting style. However as he is a V1 character, he doesn't gain any of the additional bonuses a "true" dual-wielder like Rinuya would gain.
** As shown in his personal quests, Ioh isn't actually that good at dual-wielding, and only really uses Alan's sword together with his own once his doubts and insecurities clear.
* GeoEffects: Ioh gains several bonuses while fighting in urban areas, like towns or cities.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Ioh is always second-guessing himself, as he personally thinks that he can't live up to Alan's example.
* ScarsAreForever: On his face, and on his chest.
* StatusBuff: Gains a boost to his Attack power, movement speed, and a little DamageReduction in urban areas thanks to his first ability.
* TragicKeepsake: He keeps the sword of his friend with him, and uses it in battle.

!!Peixe
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chainchronicle_peixeb.png]]
[[caption-width-right:200:The Beach Lover.]]

A member of the Sea Breeze tribe, Peixe is a Sea Walker, meaning that rather than having a single animal totem like the other members of her tribe, her animal totem is instead the shoals of fish that live around Soul Island. Unusually friendly for a Forest Sprite, Peixe becomes the navigator of the ship that the Hero and the Volunteer Army eventually use to venture outside of Yggdra.
----
* ExperienceBooster: Given by her second ability, which increases experience from quests by 15%.
* GeoEffects: Peixe gains more bonuses on Beach or Ship terrain.
* GuestStarPartyMember: For the quests that preceded the Book 2 update.
* TheNavigator: Her ''actual'' job, though in practice she's also TheCaptain (literally) of the ship the Volunteer Army uses to leave Yggdra, and from that point on patrol Crosswaters.
* SixthRanger: For the "core" party of the Hero, from the moment the ship reaches Crosswaters and the Daybreak Ocean, Peixe will ''always'' be part of the plot due to her role as the captain of the ship.
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: Because of her animal totem, she can speak to fish. This apparently extends to fish monsters like Sahuagin too, for some reason.
* StatusBuff: Care of her first ability, where she gains a slight bonus to Attack and DamageReduction. On Beach or Ship terrain however, this increases even further.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Fights in what's essentially a bikini.

[[caption-width-right:200:Fated Encounters.]]
-->Voiced by: Creator/AyaneSakura (Japanese), Creator/MarissaLenti (English)

A swordswoman from the Nine Territories. According to tribal law, she must fight her elder brother, Haruaki (branded an illegitimate child because he has one horn while Toka has two that 'proves' her legitimacy), so that she can succeed her clan. She joins the Volunteer Army to pursue rumors about him, so that she can kill him in a duel and lead her clan.

Received a 5-star upgrade along with Haruaki in the JP server, both of those currently unreleased in Global.
----
* BackToBackBadass: With Haruaki in her V2 upgrade character art.
* BloodKnight: Unlike Haruaki, she's more than willing to fight. While this trait is common to Nine Territories warriors, this trope is [[InvokedTrope invoked]] upon her by the clan; according to Haruaki, she was brainwashed by the clan's rule and swordfighting skills since young while never allowing her to act like a normal person. In process, she might've absorbed the usual Nine Territories spirit.
* BrotherSisterTeam: With Haruaki, after Toka's questline has been completed.
** CainAndAbel: Her relationship with Haruaki at the beginning. She's the Cain.
* ByTheBookCop: After Haruaki [[spoiler:killed their father and put their duel on hold]], she was understandably pissed, but still willingly work with the Volunteer Army to stop a monster attack because rules are rules. This is also what motivates him to kill Haruaki [[spoiler:at first]]; because rules of her clan said so.
* CleanCut: How her skill presumably works in-story. In gameplay, it evokes the image of a SingleStrokeBattle.
* HunterOfHerOwnKind: Has the skill Ogre Killer, which allows her to deal extra damages to ogres. She happens to be an ogre herself.
* HonorBeforeReason: She wants to kill Haruaki for the sake of her clan's future. She states that while she bear no ill will against him, she's just following the rules of her clan. She even stated that she was raised for this purpose only.
** In the OVA, she decides to pick a fight with Haruaki even when the rest of the Volunteer army are ''fighting for a huge battle with the Black Army'' nearby.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Eventually swore to protect Haruaki from anything that threatens their life so that she can one day kill him.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Unlike Haruaki, the 'warning' part of this trope is very much true.
* RequiredPartyMember: Haruaki's 5-star upgrade will need her 5-star upgrade at a sufficient level to continue his quest.
* UnstoppableRage: She went to this phase (yet still reasonable enough to listen to Hero and Co.) after [[spoiler:Haruaki had an assassin kill their father.]]
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler: Haruaki did, at the second part of her quest. She's ''very pissed'' about this.]]

Called the "Dragon Slayer", Vorg is a warrior that technically doesn't discriminate against what enemy he hunts. He joins the Volunteer Army because he thinks that the Hero has potential, and wants to teach him how to ''really'' fight.

Along with Aludra, Phillip and Zygmunt, he's one of those [[strike:suckered]] ''hired'' by Loletta in her chain story.
----
* BloodKnight: Vorg ''really'' likes to get into fights with monsters
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Aludra as well.
* {{BFS}}: His default weapon, though you could give him other swords.
* FriendlyRivalry: With Aludra, during Loletta's chain story.
* SituationalDamageAttack: Vorg does more damage to Dragons.
* StatusBuff: Reflecting his BloodKnight tendencies, his second ability makes his Attack power rise with each wave (to a maximum of 100% at 50 waves!).

!!Yoshikage

The younger brother of Yoshitsugu, he joins the Volunteer Army because his older brother respects its battle prowess.
----
* BloodKnight: Even more so than his brother, and one of the reasons why he joined the Volunteers in the first place was because it was a good place to find battles to join in.
* {{Determinator}}: Despite being exhausted, Yoshikage won't let it stop him from fighting as, in his words, he needs to fight his brother's share as well.
* HiddenDepths: While Yoshikage is a loud blowhard, he still cares for his older brother, enough that he tries to write him regularly after battles. That said, he does over-estimate is contribution in his letters...
* HotBlooded: Loud, brash, and hot-headed? Yep.
* StatusBuff:
** Thanks to his first ability, Yoshikage gains a bonus to his Attack during a boss wave.
** His second ability also gives a party-wide buff, increasing Attack and movement speed for everyone else. Yoshikage himself remains unaffected, however.

A girl who grows and sells flowers for a living, she's not a member of the Volunteer Army per se, though she does ask them to help her out in a few things.
----
* BerserkButton: Trample her beloved flower garden? Prepare to get hurt.
* CloudCuckooLander: Carnalian is a bit... strange. She talks to flowers, thinks she has a "flower radar", and believes that flowers can reply to her as well.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: Carnalian is surprisingly strong for a simple flower girl, and as shown through her quests, has been shown to slap goblins strong enough ''to break their skulls'', and pretty much slapped a thief who tried to manhandle her silly.
** Just to give one an idea just how strong Carnalian is, her ''base'' Attack power is 4300, while her ''max'' is 9400. Loletta, who has a ''reputation'' for being an uncontrollable engine of disaster as the Demon of Destruction, only has 2000, and only tops off at 6400 without breaking her level limit.
* InnocentFlowerGirl: Averted. ''Seems'' to fit the archetype at first glance, but people soon find out that Carnalian is not reserved at all, and is more than capable defending herself.
* LeeroyJenkins: Carnalian's solution to battles is usually to just charge right in. Plans? What are those?
* LifeDrain: The secondary effect of her first skill heals her as much HP as the damage she deals to enemies.
* NoSell: Carnalian is immune to the Sealing debuff.
* ShoutOut: To Manga/AzumangaDaioh, of all things, in her second quest.
--> '''Carnalian:''' Hello everyone! How are you? Fine, thank you! [[Creator/NorioWakamoto I wish I were a bird!]]
* StatusBuff: Her second skill makes her immune to the Sealing debuff (meaning her special attacks can't be shut down), while her Attack and movement speed increase per each enemy wave.
* StatusEffects: Her first skill give her attacks a chance to deal ''poison''. FridgeLogic would then make one wonder just ''why'' a flower girl would even ''use'' poison though.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: In her first quest. Okay, there were goblins in the area anyway, but Carnalian trying to chase them away ''by slapping them hard enough to crush their skulls'' was guaranteed to cause them to return to her flower garden.

!!Lolleta
[[quoteright:202:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lolleta.jpg]]
An adorably cute-looking merchant associated with the Vice Capital. Because this elegant and innocent merchant cannot properly fight to acquire trade goods in the more dangerous areas, she tagged along with the Volunteer Army to ask for their protection. Her cute looks easily captivates everyone that interacted with her, a fact she's very oblivious of. What? What do you mean, you saw a giant axe behind her? And what do you mean that you saw her brutally beating someone? Nah, must be an impostor pretending to be her. I mean, look at her! She definitely not that kind of person...right? Everyone?

Has her own Chain Story, 'The Competition for a Prize'.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: Has her own Chain Story.
* BadassAdorable: The 'adorable' part is [[InvokedTrope Invoked]]. Beautifully flowing twintails, poofy skirt and handbag, a painfully cute-sounding VerbalTic, a [[{{Squee}} cheerful front]] she used in your first meeting, ''CrocodileTears''...then she brutally beat up someone behind your back when the treasure she hunted has been taken by the aforementioned someone moments ago. She invoked this trope because her true personality scares potential clients away, though she does admit (probably) that she wanted to improve her personality.
* BeneathTheMask: Part of her shtick is that she won't show her true personality to everyone. Vorg lampshaded this at the end of her Chain Story.
---> '''Vorg''': ...Do you really need to stay in character now that your secret's out?!
---> '''Lolleta''': Why, of course I do! Living life as the Demon of Destruction isn't easy, you know! So you better get used to me! Tee hee hee!
---> '''Vorg''': *sigh*... my head hurts.
* TheBerserker: She [[TurnsRed powers up]] when her HP is down to 3/4, raising her attack and movement speed. It sounds insane, but one of the most effective way to use her is let her take hits and to ''not'' heal her until the next wave.
* TheBlacksmith: In the Global version, she can be used to craft two Rank A weapons; a fire-elemental axe and a spear.
* TheDreaded: Silva said that she's the last person anyone wanted to mess with, and even her allies fear her.
* IntrepidMerchant: While it's debatable if she actually have any talent as a merchant in-story, her first ability can give you a slight gold boost after completing a battle, as with most merchants.
* RedBaron: "Demon of Destruction". Notable that this is one of the few instances when a character's title is actually referred in-story. [[CrazyPrepared Vorg]] and [[OldMaid Aludra]] briefly loses their grip when they finally realized who she is.
* StatusEffects: Her skill is able to stun one enemy while dealing heavy damage.
* SupportingProtagonist: In her own Chain Story, she didn't do much except being a handler for the assignment everyone got involved with... and for tagging along, becoming a DeusExMachina near the end due to her strength.
* VerbalTic: Inconsistent translation renders it as 'Kyu-pi' or 'Capy'. Invoked on her part as her 'innocent merchant' shtick. ''Everyone'' feels painful hearing it.

A mason by trade and an architect at heart, Mimu helped repair and design some of the fortifications at the Vice Capital. Left with nothing to do, she accepts Phoena and Pirika's invitation to join the Volunteer Army, as she sees it as an opportunity to do more good, and help repair the damage done by the Black Army to the towns in the Holy Kingdom.
----
* ASimplePlan: It turns out Mimu is fond of this. Run out of building material? Raid some ruins some bandits are holed up in, drive them out, use the ruin as resources, and maybe get a bounty for the bandits as a bonus. Monsters attack and damage the town's buildings? Attack the monster lair and use THAT for repairs.
--> '''Mimu:''' I have an idea.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: It's easy to mistake Mimu for a guy at first glance.
* CriticalStatusBuff: She gains DamageReduction once her HP drops below half.
* DamageReduction: Gains this care of her first skill, while her second makes it more potent, increasing it by 2% per wave to a max of 50%.
* GradualRegeneration: Another thing granted by her second skill, although it's really minor.
* RidiculouslyFastConstruction: Something that Mimu's ''really'' good at. When the Volunteer Army stops for the night, everyone else puts up tents to sleep in. Mimu? She somehow constructs a whole ''house'' to sleep in, in the middle of a field, without anyone noticing.

!!Monette
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chainchronicle_monetteb.png]]
[[caption-width-right:200:The Invincible Waitress.]]

A waitress at one of the many taverns in the Vice Capital, Monette is a bundle of irrepressible energy. She takes her work ethic very seriously, both on the battlefield and while doing her other work as a waitress.
----
* AscendedExtra: Became an acquirable Arcana during the event named after her, where prior to this she was just an NPC in the in-game store.
* DudeMagnet: Monette attracts a LOT of attention from the males of the Volunteer Army. In her first quest alone, Carlo, Whargman, and Knuckle hit on her.
* GenkiGirl: Constantly bright and full of energy? Yep.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Her default equipped weapons are ''beer mugs''. Okay, they count as fists, but still!
* PermanentlyMissableContent: Only available as a recruit from the Monette's Tower event.
* TheReveal: The tavern Monette is working in? It turns out that it was owned by her grandfather.
* StatusBuff:
** Given by her first skill, which increases her movement speed and gives her minor DamageReduction.
** Her second skill increases the damage of her SpecialAttack, but only after she successfully hits ten times in a row.

!!Rin Lee
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chainchronicle_rinleeb.png]]
[[caption-width-right:200:The Husband-Seeker.]]

A female martial artist from a far-off land, Rin Lee has come to Daybreak Island for an unusual reason: she's looking for a husband. But not only any man will do, oh no, but it has to be a man who's strong enough to defeat her in honorable combat. Because how ''else'' would she know that he would be a worthy man for her?
----
* ActionGirl: Apparently common among her clan.
* AllAmazonsWantHercules: A clan tradition is that a member of Rin Lee's clan is only allowed to marry a man who's implicitly stronger than her (imagine a LighterAndSofter version of the schtick of the Chinese Amazons from ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf''). The issue here is that Rin Lee is probably ''the'' strongest member of her clan's current generation, so she's had particular difficulty on finding a husband candidate.
* AnimeChineseGirl: Certainly fills the archetype of a proud and willful female martial artist, and her looks does fit the mold as well.
* CriticalStatusBuff: Granted by her second skill where she gains another bonus to her Attack once her HP drops below a third.
* InsistentTerminology: In her second quest, she starts out calling the Hero her "chosen one" and "soulmate". [[spoiler:She drops this when she realizes that she's been pushing her feelings unto the hero, and decides to go back to calling him "Captain", until the time she can get him to sincerely fall in love with her.]]
* LoveConfession: Done ''twice'', to the Hero, though during her second one, she was much more forthright in her feelings. Phoena is dumbstruck in both instances.
* LoveEpiphany: During her second quest, she realizes just why she was attracted to the hero in the first place: rather than physical strength, as the custom of her people, she was instead attracted at the strength of his personality and his kindness.
* StatusBuff:
** Her first skill gives gradual bonuses to her Attack and movement speed for each enemy wave, and another Attack bonus during the boss wave.
** Her second skill increases this further, granting even MORE Attack Power and movement speed, but only after her attacks hit ten times.

!!Rinuya
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chainchronicle_rinuyab.png]]
[[caption-width-right:200:The Sword Thief.]]

A thief with an obsession with collecting swords, she joins the Volunteer Army because she thinks that travelling with them will give her better chances to increase her collection further.
----
* CollectorOfTheStrange: Rinuya's particular itch is rare swords, apparently. It was used to set a trap for her during her first Arcana quest.
* ContrivedCoincidence: Gee, it's really convenient that the bandit hideout Madena and Rinuya were infiltrating ALSO was the target for a Volunteer Army raid, right?
* DualWielding: One of the first "true" dual-wielders introduced for the Global edition, and her utility would have increased further had the Alternate Equip mechanic from the JP version been introduced in time.
* HypocriticalHumor: Rinuya gets positively steamed when another bunch of bandits steal the swords she was after right under he nose. Madena points out that Rinuya had initially wanted to steal the swords as well.
* ItemFarming: Rinuya's first skill is essentially a weaker version of Nympha's, increasing the chance of chest drops and gold gained after battle.
* {{Knockback}}: What her second skill grants, on a successful CriticalHit.
* PermanentlyMissableContent: As a Ring Recruit, you've only got two months to get her. If you don't? You're out of luck.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Rinuya basically fights in what amounts to a bra and a miniskirt.

!!Scherazard
[[quoteright:202:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scherazard.jpg]]
A graceful warrior of the desert with moves and looks as beautiful as any dancer...and [[BeneathTheMask a personality uglier than a dead cactus]]. She joined the Volunteer Army in search of a treasure stolen from her tribe.

A Fortune Ring character, and she could be {{Permanently Missable|Content}} if you didn't manage to acquire five copies of her in time. However, she has a peculiar draw rate, which means anyone could've easily recruited Scherazard with maximum Limit Break.
----
* BeneathTheMask: She has a terrible personality despite her reputation, though she maintained a nice attitude within the Volunteer Army.
---> '''Pirika''': Don't get me wrong. I get it, she's hot and powerful, no question. It's just...there's something about her. I don't know what, but something. Does that make sense?
* BornUnlucky: She admits that she probably doesn't do well in the luck department, from having her scarf yanked by a passing horse to her being left out in buying some kebabs.
* DualWielding: Her model dual wields swords, but it's only cosmetic and has no effect on her attack speed.
* LadyOfWar: Anyone who idolizes her see her as this. While she does have the looks, she doesn't have the personality.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Her name is probably based on the Literature/ArabianNights narrator, Scheherazade.
* RedBaron: Desert Gem. Her appearance is enough to ignite the fanboyism of a mercenary group into [[{{Main/Squee}} squeeing little boys]].
* {{Stripperriffic}}: Just like pretty much almost everyone hailing from the Lake of Sand.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Kebabs... with yogurt. In her introduction, she asked if you liked them. No one but the Volunteer Army believes that she liked the food, though, perhaps not believing why such a 'gallant' figure would like such foods.
** When the Hero treat her a kebab in her first quest, she flips when she realize that the kebab on her hands has chili sauce in it. [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments She then proceeds to]] [[SingleIssueWonk rant at the person]] who sold the kebab. At one point her rants goes so loud that it ''barely fits into the text box''.
---> I demand to know--WHY IS THERE CHILI SAUCE ON THESE KEBABS?![...] Kebabs can have a sauce of yogurt and nothing else![...]WHADDA YA MEAN THERE'S NO YOGURT?! ThisIsUnforgivable You know NOTHING![...]What did you say?! This issue [[SeriousBusiness deeply affects how I live my life!]][...]Kebabs, yogurt. Kebabs, yogurt. Kebabs, yogurt. WHY WON'T ANYONE ACCEPT THE SIMPLE TRUTH?!
* QuestioningTitle: Both of her quest has titles that ended with a question mark, as if the game itself lampshading her terrible personality compared to rumors of her gallant figure.

!!Teresa
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chainchronicle_teresab.png]]
[[caption-width-right:200:The Swordmaster of Slaughter.]]
-->Voiced by: Kaede Yuasa (Japanese), Sara Ragsdale (English)

Despite her relatively young age, Teresa is exceptionally skilled with the sword, enough for her to be rightfully named a Swordmaster, a title bestowed to a single person every generation. Despite this however she is shunned rather than feted, as she also is possessed by an uncontrollable urge to use those skills on other people. Because of this killing urge, she considers herself cursed. She joins the Volunteer Army after the Hero and his friends defeat her, but only because she can unleash those murderous impulses on the Black Army instead.

Although her own personal story is remarkably short, she plays an important role in Lilith's chain story ''The Lady of Salvation'', where she accompanies the cleric in her search for a clear answer to her dilemma. Despite their drastically different attitudes and outlooks, the two of them become fast friends.
----
* AxeCrazy: Turns into this the longer she goes without killing anyone. It's the main reason why she ''attacks'' the Hero's party when they first meet her.
* DamageReduction: Granted by her first skill.
* OddFriendship: With Lilith.
* ReformedCriminal: It turns out that her time with the Volunteer Army does do Teresa some good. Despite this, as she reveals in her conversations with Lilith, she believes that for all the good she's been able to do with the Volunteers, she believes that she's beyond saving, and tells Lilith flatly that when the time comes for her to do her duty as a Selector, to ''not'' choose her.
* StatusBuff: Both of Teresa's skills increase her personal stats to be more effective in battle. The first one gives damage reduction and a movement speed increase, while the second one grants a damage bonus per enemy she kills (3% per kill, up to a maximum of 100%!).
** CriticalStatusBuff: Her first skill also adds a bonus to Attack but only after Teresa's HP drops below half.

!!Yolde
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chainchronicle_yoldeb.png]]
[[caption-width-right:200:The Earth Sprite Master Swordsmith]]

An earth sprite master smith, Yolde was sought out by the Volunteer Army through a suggestion by Baldur, due to her expertise in crafting weapons, particularly the Nine Territories' katana. While reluctant at first, she agrees to join them because she liked the determination in the Hero's eyes. Besides, it would be a good opportunity to field-test her creations through active use.
----
* AnachronismStew: Yolde is an odd duck among the Earth Sprites living in the Maze Pass, as she's designed as if she was a Nine Territories native, and what's more, specializes in Nine Territories weapons. [[spoiler:Some of why this is so is explained in the Chain Story ''The Ogre Blacksmith'']].
* TheBlacksmith: A master smith in-universe, this is also represented in-game through her use in Crafting, where she can craft the swords ''Edged Avarice'' and ''Defender's Sword''.
* GradualRegeneration: Yolde's first skill allows her to heal her 20% of her own HP every wave.
* LifeDrain: Gained through her second skill.
* ManaDrain: Another effect of her second skill, which gives a chance to gain a point of Mana after defeating an enemy.
* StatusEffects: Yolde's special attack inflicts Daze on enemies.

!!Yoshitsugu
[[quoteright:202:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yoshitsugu.jpg]]
-->Voiced by: Hiromichi Tezuka (Japanese), Creator/AaronRoberts (English)
Lord of the Second Territory. A genius swordsman, his unmatched swordsmanship has brought his house to second in the territories. However, he is sickly and cannot last long on the battlefield. He fears that when he can no longer stand and fight, his house will fall.
----
* AloofBigBrother: Implied, but he wonders how his brother sees him as.
* {{Foil}}: He and his brother, Yoshikage, are foils to each other.
** NobleMaleRoguishMale: The noble male compared to his brother's roguish.
** RedOniBlueOni: He's the blue to his brother's red. Also the blue to Shuza's red. This is also taken literally in both cases, as all three characters, are in fact, oni.
* BloodKnight: Something that he can't help with, since he's still a Nine Territories samurai despite his health condition. This is also the reasoning behind [[spoiler: him suddenly refusing the Volunteer Army to represent his territory at the tournament]], because he wanted to feel the thrill of battle once again.
* HandicappedBadass: Despite his health condition, he's pretty much one of the strongest warriors in the game, acknowledge in and out-universe.
* HonorBeforeReason: See BloodKnight above. Also, his desire for thrilling battles motivates him to ally with [[ItsAllAboutMe Shuza]] in Jedah's Chain Story, [[EnemyMine despite]] both of them not really having the most cordial of relationships.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: Currently has one.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: He's considered one of the strongest characters in the game, but he's only available in limited-time events.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: His starter weapon is a katana.
* MrFanservice: Supposedly, since he's the poster boy of the [[ValentinesDayEpisode White Day Festival]].
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Likely named after Sengoku period samurai Yoshitsugu Ōtani.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Downplayed. He's more composed compared to most other ogres, and has a lot of concern for his territory. However, he also has a thirst for the thrill of battle from time to time.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: The first Nine Territories Lord who is capable of joining the Volunteer Army.
** Technically, that honor belongs to Semial, who is also a Nine Territories Lord. However, because his circumstances made him technically not a Lord when he joins Volunteer Army, Yoshitsugu still counts as this.
* SicklyProdigy: This, coupled with IncurableCoughOfDeath above (that could be interpreted as tuberculosis), made him resemble [[UsefulNotes/TheShinsengumi Okita Souji]].
* TakingYouWithMe: His skill [[CastFromHitPoints deals damage to himself]], but deals even more damage to all enemies in range. Also in his story, where he states that he'll battle anyone until he falls.
