->''"The Creed of the Assassin Brotherhood teaches us that nothing is forbidden to us. Once, I thought that meant we were free to do as we would. To pursue our ideals, no matter the cost. I understand now. Not a grant of permission. The Creed is a warning."''

The main protagonist of the Animus portion of the game, an Assassin of both French and Austrian descent. He joined the Brotherhood in 1789, the year the Revolution began.
----
* TenMinuteRetirement: Goes into one [[spoiler:when he is exiled by the Brotherhood. Then Elise talks him back into returning to Paris and he dons his Assassin robes once more.]]
* TheAlcoholic: One of Arno's recurring flaws is his habit of turning to the bottle when things go bad, [[spoiler:such as confronting Elise after the Bastille where she tells him to go away and then later after being scorned again by Elise and the Assassins. He spends weeks drinking it up and earned a reputation for being the "town drunk" at Versailles.]]
** He's back at it during the start of ''Dead Kings''.
* AnimalMotifs: Arno is old German for "Eagle's Strength" continuing the usual theme for {{Player Character}}s like Altaïr, Ezio, and Haytham, a notable return after Connor's wolf theme and Edward Kenway's crow theme.
* AuraVision: Has a short-lasting variant of Eagle Vision known as Eagle Pulse that allows him to tag foes like how Edward's Eagle Vision worked in ''Black Flag''.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Though you don't have to do them as a player, the optional objectives for his missions show him meticulously scanning the city for an easy way to his targets. See GuileHero for an excellent example.
* BackToBackBadasses: With Elise in the SDCC trailer.
* BadassLongcoat: Similar to Connor's outfit -- which makes sense, when you consider that both games take place in the late 18th Century.
* BadassNormal: Zigzagged. His fragility, and the fact that he is not related to Desmond, imply a comparatively low concentration of the CharlesAtlasSuperpower -granting First Civilization genes. On the other hand, his [[AuraVision Eagle Pulse]] allows him to spot enemies through walls without first setting his eyes on them, something no ancestor of Desmond's has been able to.
* BeardOfSorrow:
** Normally clean shaven, but he grows facial hair during [[spoiler:two low points in his life: imprisonment in the Bastille and coping with being exiled from the Brotherhood.]]
** [[spoiler:''Dead Kings'', taking place after Elise's death, has him wearing his thickest beard yet.]]
* {{BFG}}: In the ''Dead Kings'' DLC, he uses a Guillotine Gun, a massive grenade launcher with an axe blade as a bayonet blade.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Wields a Hidden Blade that also comes with a ballistic knife attachment known as the Phantom Blade. Interestingly, Arno only has one blade compared to the two of previous protagonists; all double assassinations are done with either a quick follow up or a different method entirely.
* BlueIsHeroic: Arno's Assassin robe is very blue and he's the main protagonist of ''Unity''.
* BreakingOldTrends: The first player character in the main console series not to be an ancestor of Desmond Miles. He is also the first since Altaïr to have only one Hidden Blade, and to not be a WalkingArmory.
* BrokenAce: He's a trained killer skilled in many forms of combat and parkour, but he has a fragile emotional state in comparison to previous protagonists which often causes him to [[DrowningMySorrows start drinking when things overwhelm him]].
* TheCameo:
** [[spoiler:He and Elise can be seen from Shay's perspective at the end of ''Rogue.'']]
** [[spoiler:He also appears near the end of [[Film/AssassinsCreed2016 the 2016 film]], as one of the ghostly Assassins that surround Callum while he is speaking to his mother through the Animus. This has led some to speculate that he is one of Callum's ancestors.]]
* CastingGag: In the Japanese version, Arno is voiced by Creator/ShinichiroMiki, who also voiced [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight another character]] called Assassin.
* TheCharmer: Is described as very charismatic.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He grew up with Élise, and the two eventually became a couple though due to their different social classes they had to keep it hidden. Unfortunately her father's death and both of them ending up on opposite sides of the Assassin-Templar conflict almost ends any romance between them, though once they start working together they start to resume their relationship.
* ClassyCravat: As opposed to the red sashes of earlier Assassin protagonists and his fellow Assassin teammates, Arno wears a red cravat in his default outfit.
* ConflictingLoyalties: Not only is he in love with a Templar, his Order's sworn enemy, he was unknowingly raised by the French Templar Grandmaster before he was murdered. [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Since the latter is the former's father,]] it's got an [[TheParagonAlwaysRebels interesting twist.]] He ultimately proves to be more loyal to Élise than the Brotherhood, prompting [[spoiler:Bellec to try to kill him and the Brotherhood to kick him out]].
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter:
** In terms of personality at the start of the game he's very similar to Ezio, as both are TheCharmer who join the Brotherhood due to the deaths of their father figures. However Ezio was the son of a highly respected family of Assassins in a BlackAndWhiteMorality story with most of his love interests having been allies to the Brotherhood to some extent, while Arno was raised by Templars and had ConflictingLoyalties due to his relationship with Élise while his story had far more elements of GreyAndGrayMorality. Ezio also had many allies in his journey while in contrast Arno had to kill his mentor while having few friends in the Brotherhood.
** Being raised by a Templar makes him a GoodCounterpart to Haytham, while his role during a revolution makes him similar to Connor. However Connor was played a major role in ensuring his side won the American Revolution with his Templar father being his enemy because of this, while Arno was often more affected by the French Revolution than someone who decided it's fate with his adopted Templar father being killed at the start of the game.
** Arno and Altaïr are very similar due to being in a [[DatingCatwoman romantic relationship]] with a Templar while also starting out as just ordinary Assassins in their respective games. However Altaïr was raised by the Assassins and grew to become an incredibly arrogant one until the events of the game taught him humility and how to follow the Creed, while Arno was unknowingly raised by Templars and struggled with fully joining the Brotherhood throughout most of the game. Altaïr also eventually married Maria Thorpe as she joined the Brotherhood, while [[spoiler:Élise died leaving Arno heartbroken]].
* CulturedBadass: Is very well educated due to his noble upbringing.
* CynicismCatalyst: In [[DownloadableContent Dead Kings]], taking place after the main game, he is decidedly very cynical about both [[TheRevolutionWillNotBeCivilized the French Revolution]] and [[ForeverWar the Assassin-Templar conflict]] following [[spoiler:Elise's death]], and just wants to [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere leave France for good]].
* DatingCatwoman: Elise, his romantic interest, happens to be a Templar.
* DeadpanSnarker: He's up there with Shay Cormac as one of the snarkiest Assassins in the series.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Arno is a clear deconstruction of not only Ezio, but also Connor, Edward and Shay due to one fact: Arno ''isn't'' an important and vital person to the Assassins or the Templars, which to varying degrees all the previous protagonists have been. He's not a promising new recruit who develops into one of the most respected people of all time like Ezio or Shay, he isn't the last hope of the Assassins like Connor, and he isn't a random person who stumbles into the Assassin-Templar conflict on his own while having his own goals like Edward. Like Altaïr, Arno is just an Assassin who isn't getting any special treatment from his superiors, who instead expect him to do what he's told, and therefore all the things previous characters would be applauded for are what get Arno repeatedly condemned and eventually [[spoiler:exiled by the Brotherhood for a time]] since he's breaking the Brotherhood's rules. In fact, most of the things that the Brotherhood criticises him for, such as killing people without permission and joining the Brotherhood out of revenge instead of believing in their ideals, are the exact same things Ezio did during ''Assassin's Creed II''.
* DrowningMySorrows: [[spoiler:He ends up like this after being expelled from the Assassins in Segment 10.]]
* DualWielding: Averted. Unlike every Assassin since Ezio, he only has a single hidden blade. As a result, his double assassinations play out a bit differently; rather than stabbing two people at once, he either briefly incapacitates one to buy time to stab the second and then stabs the first, or kills one via stabbing while simultaneously killing the other unarmed (generally with a NeckSnap).
* EarnYourHappyEnding: Possibly as the [[spoiler:[[Film/AssassinsCreed2016 2016 film]] reveals that Arno is the ancestor to Callum Lynch, meaning that despite losing Élise he might have been able to move on and start a relationship with someone else. However, it’s also possible that he had unknowingly fathered a child, which is how Ezio is the ancestor of Subject 16]].
* EnemyMine: He works with Elise to track down Grand Master de la Serre's killer. The fact that he ultimately proves more loyal to her than the Assassins leads to [[spoiler:Bellec deciding that the Brotherhood must be purged, including him.]]
* FragileSpeedster: The trailers heavily emphasize his speed and agility compared to other protagonists, but he is a lot more vulnerable to damage than any of Desmond's ancestors.
* FrameUp: He's framed for the death of his adopted father, Templar Grandmaster François de la Serre, and gets sent to the Bastille, where he meets Marquis de Sade and Pierre Bellec before escaping on 14 July, 1789.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Has this reputation in the Assassin Council, aside from Mirabeau none of them seem to like him all that much. Bellec is an interesting subversion. On one hand he gives Arno a hard time, on the other hand he admires his RebelliousRebel nature [[spoiler:and believes that Arno will support his decision to murder Mirabeau and supplant the Council and go kill the Templars. He was wrong. The Council criticize Arno for letting two Master Assassins die on his watch and later kick him out for good. He does eventually rejoin them at some point after the events of ''Dead Kings'' in 1794, eventually rising to the rank of Master Assassin]].
* GlassCannon: Compared to earlier protagonists, Arno can hit pretty hard but is far more vulnerable to blades and gunfire, particularly the latter, and doesn't carry nearly as many weapons as [[Videogame/AssassinsCreedII Ezio]] or [[Videogame/AssassinsCreedIII Connor]].
* GoodCounterpart: Arno’s life is almost exactly the same as [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedIII Haytham Kenway]], with both of their fathers being killed by Templars while also being raised by Templars themselves. The difference is that Haytham was raised to be a Templar while Arno was kept in the dark about the conflict between Templars and Assasins, which created two very different outcomes: Haytham became loyal to the cause even after learning his father was an Assassin, while Arno was only concerned with being with Élise and getting revenge on her father's killers, which means it took him some time to fully join the Brotherhood.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Earns a rather prominent scar on his nose when imprisoned in the Bastille.
* GuileHero: Make no mistake, he can kick your ass in a fight, but he can come up with some pretty sneaky ways to take you down. Take the place of a confessor to kill the man confessing to him, simultaneously taking out his target and gathering information? Oh yeah.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:While he carries Elise's dead body out of the catacomb.]]
* HisHeartWillGoOn: [[spoiler:Elise dies but considering he has descendants, it seems likely he was eventually able to find love again.]]
* IconicItem: Has a pocket watch in his possession that belonged to his father.
* InTheHood: Like most Assassins Arno wears a hood most of the time.
* LeParkour: Is an excellent freerunner, climbing through Paris like how Connor traversed forests.
* MilitaryMaverick: Has this reputation among the Assassins, since he conducts most of his actions independently and jumps the gun. He later admits this to Napoleon, citing it as a reason why he would not be army material.
* MissingMom: His mother left the family when Arno was young for "philosophical differences" (aka: [[LoveCannotOvercome she found out her husband]] [[TheMasqueradeWillKillYourDatingLife was an Assassin]]).
* MoreDakka: Wields a multi-shot pistol that allows him to shoot several people at once without reloading.
* MyGreatestFailure: Believes himself guilty of Grandmaster de la Serre's murder, for he failed to deliver a letter that would've warned the Grandmaster of an impending attack. Arno joins the Assassin Brotherhood to redeem this mistake.
** In his MushroomSamba when he joins the Brotherhood, it's shown he blames himself for his father's death, envisioning Charles looking around for him and saying that they should have already left. It's unclear if Arno's running off really did play a role; the hallucination also showed Charles fighting back against his assailant and in ''Rogue'' we see that [[spoiler:Shay took him by surprise.]]
* MyLifeFlashedBeforeMyEyes: Whenever he kills his targets, Arno gets a glimpse of their memories as they die.
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: Despite being French, he doesn't care for the political debates and partisan politics of the Revolution, leaving that to Mirabeau and others to handle.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: His first and foremost goal is avenging Grandmaster de la Serre, which earns him criticism from the other Assassins for his lack of adherence to the Creed.
* ScarsAreForever: He gets one under his left eye when he got arrested and thrown into the Bastille after being accused for de la Serre's murder. If you squint closely, it has never fully healed even years later.
* SeeingThroughAnothersEyes: The third variant of Eagle Vision in Arno's possession, Communal Sense, allows his teammates to see what he sees within a limited range.
* SinisterScimitar: His pose in his character trailer shows him stretching a French cutlass aloft, in true swashbuckler fashion.
* StealthExpert: Is good at all forms of stealth.
* SwordAndGun: The requisite combination for any Assassin since Ezio is still present here.
* TragicKeepsake: His father's pocket watch. The day his father was killed, he dropped it in shock and it broke, and he never got it fixed, most likely leaving it broken as a reminder of his lost innocence. He twice goes to great lengths to retrieve after it's been stolen.
* TranquilFury: [[spoiler:He shows no visible anger as he sadistically pushes his Hidden Blade into Germain's throat after the latter kills Elise]].
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:He serves as this for La Touche and Germain who send him on the wrong trail towards Lafreniere, who was about to stage a violent attack to put down the Revolutionary Templars. He's also shaping up to be one for Napoleon who steals an Apple under his nose]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Was a thoroughly adorable little boy.
* WelcomedToTheMasquerade: The son of an Assassin, Arno is adopted into a Templar family [[spoiler:after his father is murdered]] with the rare intent on welcoming him to their side of the masquerade. It doesn't end up happening and Arno is recognized by Pierre Bellec [[spoiler:after being thrown into the Bastille for murder]], who brings him back to the Assassins.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** He faces this from Elise when [[spoiler:she discovers Lafreniere's letter that could have warned her father about the attack.]]
** Later faces this from the Assassin Council after finding out [[spoiler:he killed Lafreniere without seeking their permission]]. They all give him the third degree:
--> '''Pierre Bellec''': What the Hell were you thinking?
--> '''Herve Quemar''': Unthinkable.
--> '''Sophie Trenet''': I've never heard of such phenomenal hubris.
--> '''Guillaume Beylier''': How dare you defy the Creed?
--> '''Pierre Bellec''': Next time you circumvent the Council, I'll rip you a new arsehole.
--> '''Mirabeau''': (hammers his desk for silence) [[CompassionateCritic While this Council admires your zeal, it is not your place to choose your own targets]].
** And Arno faces another one from Elise when [[spoiler:he defends her and allows Germain to escape, when Elise wanted Arno to assassinate Germain while he was in their sight.]]
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: Similar to how [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedIII Connor]]'s costume was based on the American Star-Spangled Banner, Arno incorporates the French Tricolour into his Assassin robe.
* WouldHitAGirl: Assassinates Marie Levesque near the end of the game.

An Assassin who comes from a long lineage, he is the father of Arno Victor Dorian.
----
* DisappearedDad: He dies very quickly, leaving Arno to be adopted by the de la Serre family. [[spoiler:The final mission of ''VideoGame/AssassinsCreedRogue'' reveals that he is in fact killed by Shay Patrick Cormac, which Arno never appears to find out about during the story.]]
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler:His last words to Shay are to tell him that Connor has undone the Templars' plans in the new world, and that the Templars will lose.]]
* FriendlyEnemy: To Francois de la Serre.
* GoodParents: To Arno. Sadly. it doesn't last very long.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:Shay stabs him right in the chest with his Hidden Blade.]]
* OldFriend: Pierre Bellec. [[spoiler:Bellec called him by the friendly nickname "Pisspot" which he later passes down to Arno.]]
-->'''Charles Dorian''': Thank you my friend.

Mirabeau was the Mentor of the French Assassins, a nobleman, aristocrat, and the original leader of the UsefulNotes/TheFrenchRevolution. He was a voice of moderation calling for a constitutional monarchy and set up a truce between the French Assassins and Templars.
----
* AristocratsAreEvil: Himself an aversion, he also doesn't hold this belief himself, arguing for a Constitutional Monarchy and being a go-between from the King to the Assembly.
* BadassBoast: A celebrated real-life one:
-->'''Mirabeau:''' If you have orders to remove us from this hall, you must also get authority to use force, [[BringIt for we shall yield to nothing but bayonets]].
* BigGood: For Arno. Even Grand Master de la Serre defends Mirabeau and his alliance with him by citing his character:
--> '''François de la Serre''': Mirabeau is a good man. An honest man.
* CorruptPolitician: He conducted secret deals with the King behind the back of his fellow Assassins and the people of France. The database also states that the King paid off all his debts.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Accidentally drove Francois Rouille to the Templars when he brushed him away after the Tennis Court Oath. Rouille was impressed by Mirabeau's oratory and wanted to shake his hands. Instead, the new Templar Grandmaster [[spoiler:Francois-Thomas Germain]] brought him into the fold.
* CulturedBadass: Highly educated and well read.
* FlatCharacter: His interactions that we see show him as a warm Mentor type even if Shaun's database and stray comments tell us he's an [[InformedAttribute alcoholic womanizer and corrupt politician]].
* {{Foil}}: He and Grand Master de la Serre have more in common with each other than they do with their colleagues on their own secret societies. It's probably why they form a truce. They both want peace, want to put aside a ForeverWar and work for the greater good, they do so against the desires and objections of fellow Assassins/Templars and [[spoiler:both get killed by extremists in their own organization]].
* FriendlyEnemy: With Grand Master de la Serre. They meet at the Estates-General and immediately call for a truce and both speak highly of each other in private conversations.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: The real Mirabeau was one of the co-authors of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and regarded as one of the great figures of the Revolution.
* HistoricalHeroUpgrade: He's shown as a great pragmatist and a voice of reason in the Assassin Council and is shown to be the BigGood for the French Revolution. His real-life chicanery with the King, corruption and naked political ambition is not looked at much on-screen. Some historians do believe that had Mirabeau lived, France could have avoided the ReignOfTerror; others, usually critics, believe, that had he lived, he would be one of its first victims for his political corruption.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: Robespierre, a Templar, gives him one by issuing evidence of his corruption to discredit him publicly. An angry mob later calls for the removal of his remains from the Pantheon under Robespierre's command. [[labelnote:History]] While it is true that Robespierre disliked Mirabeau, and the feeling was mutual, Robespierre later ''voted'' for placing him in the Pantheon along with other deputies. It's only after the revelation of corruption, which was revealed by the Girondins and not Robespierre, that he expressed calls to disinter Mirabeau and ordered his bust destroyed in the Jacobin Club. Despite this, Mirabeau's remains were disinterred ''after'' Robespierre's death and wasn't ordered by him at all.[[/labelnote]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: While criticizing the Royal Family in the Assembly, he also managed to get his debts paid by the Crown. Likewise, he shouts down fellow Assassins on the Council for any objections and criticizes Arno for his RebelliousRebel actions but himself privately pursues his own plan for peace and backroom dealings with the King without discussing it with them.
* KavorkaMan: His bio in Project Widow makes note of his considerable sexual appetite, for which he was constantly imprisoned, sometimes by his father.
* OnlySaneMan: How he sees his lot. Arno notes that it's taking a toll on his physical health.
* PragmaticHero: How the game presents Mirabeau, stating that his corruption and secret negotiations with the King was a "dangerous game" intended to shepherd a peaceful revolution.[[labelnote:History]] While this was perhaps true of Mirabeau's real intentions, he greatly overestimated his influence with the King and Queen. At the time Louis XVI was dealing with him, he, via Marie Antoinette, was already planning his escape from the Tuileries. Mirabeau died before that, but the Flight to Varennes, as the event came to be known, permanently tarnished the Constitutional Monarchy that he had sought to build, which put a damper in people's belief that the revolution could happen from the top.[[/labelnote]]
* {{Pride}}: Perhaps his true flaw. Lafreniere calls him a "self-aggrandizing drunk" and his aloof nature rubbed off Rouille the wrong way, while even his fellow Assassins like Sophie Trenet get yelled at for raising objections at his moderate wait-and-watch approach to the Revolution. This finally leads him to [[spoiler:getting killed by Pierre Bellec when he underestimates how little he wants peace]].
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: For the Assassins and France. He is pretty much the only one on the NotSoOmniscientCouncilOfBickering who seems to know what he's doing, though his aloof nature means that he often rides over their objections and feelings [[spoiler:to his fatal detriment]].
* SurroundedByIdiots: How he feels about France at the time of the Revolution.
--> '''Mirabeau''': For months, I have been wrangling the Brotherhood, the National Assembly and the King. Taken all together, they have the political acumen of an especially stupid village council.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Pierre Bellec]]

->''"Peace with the Templars is a fairy tale!"''

A former soldier who served in the French army during the Seven Years War, Pierre Bellec is a passionate, almost fanatical, Assassin. During the French Revolution, he had sympathies with the Jacobins. He was born and trained in Colonial France and barely avoided the Templar purge of the Colonial Brotherhood.
----
* AlmightyJanitor: Invoked, despite his skill he refused any promotions as he was more useful to the Assassins as a Corporal.
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: The subject of this InUniverse: Shaun Hastings notes in Bellec's Database entry that the surest way to get Assassin Historians to fight each other is to say [[spoiler:"Bellec was right" or "Bellec was wrong" in his efforts to purge and reform the French Assassins]].
* BadassCape: A really cool black one. Sadly you don't get to keep it when you get his outfit.
* BadassInANiceSuit: He really dresses well. Arno can even wear his outfit for an option, [[spoiler:after defeating him]].
* BecameTheirOwnAntithesis: [[spoiler:Bellec states that he once saw Templars burn whole villages to find one lone Assassin, but in his last words he tells Arno that "To save the Brotherhood. I'd see Paris burn."]]
* ClimaxBoss: [[spoiler:He's a proper full-on boss fight (which is uncommon for the newer games in the series), and is fought towards the climax of the story, though you of course have a final confrontation with Germain (who's more of a PuzzleBoss) some time later.]]
* ConspicuouslyPublicAssassination: He very seriously recommends this to Arno; telling him that if he can't find a stealthy approach, there is great honour in sacrificing himself for the Assassin cause. Arno looks at him as if he's grown another head:
-->'''Arno:''' [[SarcasmMode You mean a dagger in broad daylight as I'm cut down where I stand]].
-->'''Pierre Bellec:''' [[InspirationalMartyr Sends a powerful message.]]
* DramaticallyMissingThePoint: Cites Connor's destruction of the Templars in North America as a source of inspiration even though Connor originally tried to reach out to the Templars and end their aeon long feud peacefully (i.e. the same thing that Bellec thinks is stupid) and that Connor only resorted to force after the Templars (more specifically his father) tried to exploit it.
** Likewise, he claims the Assassins have done some of their best work after surviving ThePurge, specifically mentioning Masyaf as precedent for [[spoiler:him killing off flawed Assassin leadership.]] He misses the rather critical point that [[spoiler:there were ''three'' Purges at Masyaf and the second one, led by Abbas, almost brought down the entire Brotherhood.]]
* {{Foil}}: [[spoiler:To Germain, who turned and betrayed his Grand Master; he wants to take the Assassins back to the active role of the Ezio and Altair days, when they were a decisive shaper of society. Just as Germain wants to follow de Molay's vision, Bellec sees himself following in the footsteps of Altair, Ezio and Connor]].
* GetItOverWith: [[spoiler: After being mortally wounded, he invokes this to Arno, insisting that [[TheDeterminator death is the only thing that will stop him from pursuing his goal to purify the Assassins]].]]
-->'''Pierre Bellec''': [[spoiler: Do it. If you've got an ounce of conviction, and you're not just [[LoveMakesYouDumb a love-addled milksop]], you'll kill me now, because I won't stop. I will kill [Elise]. To save the Brotherhood, I'd see Paris burn]].
-->'''[[spoiler:Arno Dorian]]''': [[WeUsedToBeFriends I know]].
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: Is every bit as bad as Germain was by the end.
* IronicEcho: He totally worships the GloryDays of Altair and Ezio. When [[spoiler:he poisons Mirabeau, crossing a line neither Mentor would ever do]] he states:
-->'''Pierre Bellec:''' Repose en paix. (Rest in Peace/Requiescat en pace)
* MisaimedFandom: Idolizes Connor Kenway for his role in destroying the Templars in America, completely failing to realize that Connor genuinely wanted to end the fighting for good and only turned to violence when Haytham tried to exploit it.
* TheNicknamer: He almost exclusively calls Arno "Pisspot". When Arno kills him, we learn that he called Arno's father the same thing as well.
* PerspectiveReversal: Ever wanted to be on the receiving end of an [[ConspicuouslyPublicAssassination air assassination?]] Élise tells you to look out for [[OneHitKill a reason]].
* RebelliousRebel: Is quite critical of Mirabeau's truce with the Templars, though his opinion is also shared by some of the other Assassin Council members. [[spoiler:Later invokes this trope as his defense for killing Mirabeau with poison which the other Assassin Council wouldn't cross, but considering they give Arno grief for letting two Master Assassins die on his watch, it's implied that they understand/accept his actions on some level]].
--> '''Pierre Bellec''': He's a politician. Sees himself as some kind of peacekeeper. He thinks he can end the war between Assassins and Templars, bring the Revolution to a happy conclusion, and convince dogs and cats to live together in peace.
* ReplacementGoldfish: [[spoiler:Arno on killing him realizes that he was this for Pierre. He was good friends with Charles and saw Arno as following in his footsteps]].
* TheRevolutionWillNotBeCivilized:
** He's a firm Jacobin partisan and believes that the Assassin cause is just, described to be a fanatic, and shows himself repeatedly to be a war hawk who wants nothing to do with actual peace with the Templars. [[spoiler:In the game proper, he believes that any peace with the Templars is folly and goes as far as to kill his Mentor, Mirabeau, to achieve his aims]].
--> '''Pierre Bellec''': Do you think it's the first time this has happened? [[spoiler:The first time the Assassins have been forced to purge their leadership?]] The first time the Order has built itself back up from nothing to power? No. [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedI Masyaf]], [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedBrotherhood Monteriggioni]], [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedIII the American Colonies]]… it's all happened before, and we've risen anew, stronger than ever.
** Arno however criticizes this idea strongly:
--> '''Arno''': [[SarcasmMode Yes, killing everyone who disagrees with you is a brilliant way to start your rise from the ashes]].
* SternTeacher: When discussing the Assassination with Charles Gabriel Sivert, he refuses to provide any hand-holding to Arno, telling him that now that he's no longer a young rookie, he must do his assassinations himself, including all the planning and groundwork.
* ViolenceIsTheOnlyOption: His view of the Templar-Assassin conflict.
-->'''Pierre Bellec:''' We mired ourselves in politics and revolutions. But we're not a nation. We're an army. And in an army, "making peace with the enemy" is called treason.

Guillaume Beylier was born in Saint-Domingue of a wealthy plantation owner and a slave. Brought to Paris young in part to be freed, he became an Assassin and fought in both the French Revolution and alongside Adéwalé's grandson, Eseosa, in Haiti.
----

* {{Expy}}: His background and appearance greatly resemble the portraits of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, general of the French Revolutionary Army and father of Creator/AlexandreDumas. Gaming websites initially had mistaken him for the same. The brief glimpse of Dumas in the Brotherhood mission, "The Tournament" clarifies that the confusion stems from similarity of costume more than anything.

Hervé Quemar was an Assassin and lawyer who kept a low profile during the French Revolution while defending those accused of treason by the Assembly. He was also a member of the Assassin Council.
----
* BarbarianLonghair: His long hair gives him a rather unkempt appearance.
* CrusadingLawyer: A man of the people type.
* HandicappedBadass: Has a bad heart which he takes aconite for.
* NumberTwo: Appears to play this role for Mirabeau.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: After [[spoiler:Mirabeau]] is murdered, Quemar gives Arno a day to find the murderer before informing the rest of the Assassin Council, who would immediately suspect Elise.
** It's subverted however because he rather unfairly [[spoiler:holds Arno responsible for the deaths of both Mirabeau and Bellec, simply because Arno sought to bring Elise to the Brotherhood for sanctuary, and that Arno killed Bellec after the latter betrayed their Mentor and attacked him first.]]
** On a less story-important note, he explains the purpose of several Assassin-exclusive locations in Cafe Theatre while Arno is touring for the first time, including Thomas De Carneillon's armour: Assassins who performed a great deed for the Brotherhood and for France were permit to wear it, until the key was broken and lost. Arno promptly asks if finding and reassembling the key would be considered a great deed for the Brotherhood and France, and Quemar agrees.

Sophie Trenet was a French playwright, essayist and pamphleteer. Passionate about the ideals of freedom for oppressed classes, she was also an active Assassin and was instrumental in ushering the second Republic.
----
* BrainyBrunette: Her appearance and bearing as well as profile convey this.
* DisappointedInYou: Expresses this [[spoiler:to Arno when he repeatedly goes against the council and finally calls for his expulsion, that seems however to have been temporary]].
* {{Expy}}: Her profile and appearance has much in common with Olympe de Gouges.
* LongLived: She looks to be in the Thirties and would be active in 1848, the Second French Republic.

-->'''Voiced by:''' Alexander Crowther (English)[[note]]'''Other Languages''':Alexander Noskov (Russian)[[/note]]

A master spy under the employ of Maximilien de Robespierre, Paton stumbled upon the presence of Templars influencing the French Revolution, and was thrown in jail when he brought his proof to his Templar boss. He was freed by the Assassins and joined them.
----
* DistressedDude: He is only minutes away from being executed when Arno and other Assassins free him.
* HaveYouToldAnyoneElse: He kept all the information on Templar conspirators and presented it to his boss, who doesn't bother asking this question before sending him to prison.
* HeelFaceTurn: Went from being a devoted revolutionary who sent hundreds of people to be imprisoned to a member of the Assassins fighting against extremism.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: He was an informer who sold out people with critical opinions to his boss only to be sold out by his own boss in turn.
-->'''Robespierre:''' You are a gifted spy, Paton. Perhaps, ''too'' gifted. Guards, arrest this traitor.
* StealthExpert: He managed to somehow sneak into a Templar ceremony and record the names of a large number of Templars. Robespierre sadly points out that Paton is too good at his job when having him arrested.

A elderly Assassin who claims to be Louis-Dominique Garthausen, a long-dead robber who gave to the poor.
----
* JustLikeRobinHood: Informs Arno that he robs aristocrats and gave their wealth to the poor, [[spoiler:just like his predecessors]].
* LegacyCharacter: Despite Arno's suspicions, he is indeed Cartouche, [[spoiler:albeit the third Assassin to bear the name. The original Cartouche passed the name onto his successor, who passed it onto this Cartouche, who is now searching for a worthy successor and is considering Arno for the job]].
* RetiredBadass: He is very elderly, and requires Arno to recover his journals.
