-->''"The reason doesn't matter. As long as a tiny bit of hope exists, that's all that matters."''
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SomaSaito (Japanese), Creator/CoreyHartzog (English), Leonel Arias (Latin American Spanish)
The main male protagonist of the story who embarked on a quest to the capital in hopes of joining the military and earning enough money to send back to his impoverished village. After narrowly escaping an evil ploy by sadistic nobles, Tatsumi soon learns of the corruption within the Empire and is recruited into the ranks of Night Raid, whose task is to rid the Empire of this corruption by slaying the wicked. Whilst competing in a fighting tournament sponsored by the Empire he unknowingly manages to steal Esdeath's heart, who unceremoniously decides to make Tatsumi her lover, much to his dismay. After events leading up to [[DeusAngstMachina another comrade's death, narrowly escaping public execution which ended with his girlfriend in a coma]], among a list of [[IronWoobie heartaches]]; Tatsumi has undergone horrendous [[CharacterDevelopment growth]], now sporting his own "[[TitleDrop titular Red Eye]]" (albeit cross-shaped) motif due to a FusionDance with his Teigu.

Tatsumi is widely regarded by many, both allies and enemies, to have an immense amount of hidden potential. Lacking the skill and experience of his allies in Night Raid, he makes up for it by becoming more powerful with each battle, with his rapid growth being noted by stronger members such as Akame and Bulat. However, this comes to a head after Night Raid's latest casualties suffered, and his desire to keep Mine alive bestowed him with a [[EmpoweredBadassNormal powerup]], allowing him to fight [[AdaptationalBadass on par with the strongest of the empire]] at the cost of his own [[PowerCreepPowerSeep mortality]].
----
* AccidentalPervert: The day he needs to go on a mission with Mine, he enters her room to wake her up without knocking and ends up seeing her in her underwear. [[PervertRevengeMode She then starts shooting at him]].
* AdaptationalWimp: [[spoiler:In the manga he manages to fight Esdeath on equal grounds and even lay blows on both her and General Budo, while in the anime he never manages this. While on both versions he defeats the Ultimate Teigu, it should be noted that the Ultimate Teigu was considerebly stronger in the manga and Tatsumi manages to survive; while in the anime he dies]].
* AmazonChaser: As he watches Mine pushing her Pumpkin over the limits while confronting the top generals of the Empire Esdeath and Budo all by herself [[spoiler:to save Tatsumi from his public execution]], he muses how such an awesome girlfriend is way more than he'll ever deserve.
* AudienceSurrogate: Tatsumi was raised in the wilderness far removed from the Imperial Capitol and any other actual city. As such, he has next to no knowledge of things that everyone else knows and has to have them explained. Such as the corruption in the Empire and the existence of Night Raid.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:The epilogue of the manga states Tatsumi had a baby with Mine, who was already pregnant from before his transformation into a dragon]].
* BadassAdorable: It's a trait that he's well known for. Just ask [[VillainousCrush Esdeath]].
* BadassInANiceSuit: During his battle against the Three Beasts.
* BadassInDistress: Played with. When Esdeath abducts him, she has no intention of hurting him and isn't aware that he's a member of Night Raid. This results in a distressing situation when [[spoiler:Syura traps him inside the palace with Budo and Esdeath, who [[OhCrap finally discovers that he is a Night Raid member]]]].
* BadassLongcoat: He began wearing one after narrowly escaping his execution and Mine was left in a coma, solidifying his depressingly [[InnocenceLost harsh coming of age]].
* BadassNormal: Even before obtaining a Teigu he was strong enough to stand up to Teigu users.
* BaitAndSwitchSentiment: When Mine finally confesses her feelings to him, Tatsumi cheerfully says he likes her too, as a comrade. Mine has to kiss him to make him understand she likes him romantically.
* BattleCouple: He frequently fights together with Mine who eventually becomes his girlfriend.
* BattleCry: "INCURSIOOOO!!!"
* BelligerentSexualTension: He and Mine spend a lot of time arguing, but they gradually become fond of each other and fall in love.
* BequeathedPower: Incursio was [[spoiler:given to him by [[BigBrotherMentor Bulat]] moments before he died]].
* BewareTheNiceOnes: While Tatsumi has a lot of (almost cliche) characteristics of a StockShonenHero, he can be [[PayEvilUntoEvil surprisingly violent]] when provoked. Aria [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/akamegakill/images/2/2d/Tatsumi_killing_Aria.png/revision/latest?cb=20141229213728 finds this out the hard way]] once he discovers she was the one who tortured his friends. In fact, it was the reason Night Raid recruited him.
* BigNever: A rather blunt one. He's willing to die for his cause, outright rejecting Esdeath's offer to join her due to his resentment of the empire and her vile tendencies. His exact words (in the anime at least) were "I don't want to be associated with someone who revels in destruction!".
* BornLucky: Zigzagged. While Tatsumi tends to suffer often, he also tends to luck out more than any other character in the series. Notable examples include (but aren't limited to):
** [[spoiler: Surviving his encounter with Aria's family, while his friends did not]].
** Surviving a hit from Akame's blade, Murasame, because of a "good luck" charm his village elder gave him at the start of his journey. Even he lampshades how lucky it was.
** Being able to use Incursio's power, despite having a low chance of being able to wield it. [[spoiler:Not to mention his opponent just stood there and let him try to use Incursio instead of attacking him]].
** Escaping from [[PersonOfMassDestruction Esdeath]] numerous times.
** [[spoiler: During his attempted public execution and Night Raid's rescue attempt, he survived getting poisoned by poisonous barbs wrapped around Incursio's handle, which was [[ShmuckBait left on the execution grounds alongside him]] to be destroyed as well. Granted, it came as the cost of him starting to fuse with and be consumed by Incursio for the rest of the Manga, but since Tatsumi didn't even realise he'd been poisoned in the first place, it comes off as a lucky break on his behalf, since Tatsumi merely wanted to gain the power necessary to fight toe-to-toe with both Budo and Esdeath at the same time, and Honest gloats in the aftermath that there's no way a mere human would be able to survive such a deadly poison]].
** During the final battle in the manga [[spoiler: he suffers several fatal injuries for the Emperor and has his armor destroyed, but manages to gain an EleventhHourSuperpower that includes a HealingFactor, allowing him to regrow limbs and heal his internal injuries]].
** [[spoiler: Survive being fused with Tyrant because Akame stabbed him with Murasame, though even she wasn't sure that was going to work]].
** Saved from being raped by two lackeys of the empire only for his "rescuer" to be [[{{Sadist}} Esdeath]].
* BreakTheCutie: In the first chapter he loses both of his childhood friends and it just goes downhill from there. [[spoiler: By the time Mine's in a coma, he's stopped smiling completely]].
* BrokenAce: As the story nears its end, it becomes apparent that Tatsumi is arguably the strongest member of Night Raid [[spoiler: after Incursio's evolution; it comes at the price of his body transforming, and overusing Incursio will result in it taking over his body, inevitably killing him]].
* ButtMonkey: He can't catch a break. He's not as big a butt monkey [[ChivalrousPervert Lubbock]] but he was definitely one when he first joined Night Raid, and has had the misfortune of being chosen as [[VillainousCrush Esdeath's lover]].
* CartwrightCurse: Downplayed. Tatsumi wasn't in a relationship with any of them, but Sheele, Chelsea and [[ManlyGay Bullat]] got some ShipTease with him and were killed shortly afterwards. Ironically, [[spoiler:his official girlfriend survived in the manga and got the happiest ending among the surviving characters]].
* CharacterDevelopment: As the series progresses.
* CluelessChickMagnet: Played with and Zigzagged. Nearly every girl Tatsumi comes across he unknowingly manages to win over. It's eventually {{lampshaded|Trope}} by Lubbock and Najenda, [[ObliviousToLove much to his confusion]]. He's aware of some affections (such as Esdeath's), but was oblivious to Mine's until she spelled it out for him.
* CombatPragmatist: He ends up fighting one of the Rakshasa demons, who he knows is stronger and more skilled than him. In order to win, he destroys the building the both of them are in, bringing it down on top of the Rakshasa demon's head.
* CountryMouse: He comes from an impoverished village in the countryside that he wishes to save by earning money in the capital.
* CovertPervert: While Tatsumi tends to be more mature than Lubbock, it's heavily implied that he is one. When meeting Leone, the first thing he noticed were her large breasts. When using the teigu, Spectator, he sees Akame, Mine and Sheele in their undergarments, and regards the ability as an "amazing" power. When trying to pull a prank on Chelsea, he admits that he actually wanted to take a peak at her naked body while she was bathing.
* CursedWithAwesome: Overlapping with BlessedWithSuck - [[spoiler:It seems that he's permanently fused to Tyrant after being saved by Akame, and so far, he doesn't seem to mind it. It helps that he's still in control and no longer going berserk]].
* CuteBruiser: He's a young boy, but his fighting style involves getting close to the enemy and delivering many swift, powerful attacks.
* DeadlyUpgrade: [[spoiler: Forcing Incursio to evolve]] sounds awesome on paper; unfortunately because Tatsumi is still inexperienced in using it, this means [[spoiler: Tyrant]] will slowly take over his body.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: Due to the fact that all witnesses were knocked unconscious by Nyau's Scream and the Three Beasts were all slain by Tatsumi and Bulat, the Empire had no information about the recently deceased [[spoiler: Bulat. Since Bulat was known as the sole owner of [[PoweredArmor Incursio]], Tatsumi's [[TakeUpMySword inheritance]] of the Teigu leads the Empire to believe that Bulat is still alive]].
* DealWithTheDevil: He begs Tyrant for the power to protect Mine and crush the Empire after feeling he was too weak [[spoiler: following Lubbock's death]]. Incursio then evolves and he becomes much more powerful, [[spoiler: being able to fight both Budou and ''Esdeath'' on equal footing]]. However, he starts feeling the effects on his body as the fight draws on.
* DeathByAdaptation: He [[TheHeroDies dies]] after [[spoiler:defeating the Emperor]] in the anime. He survives the equivalent scene in the manga [[spoiler: but it's subverted since he suffers a FateWorseThanDeath due to Incursio bonding to him and he has Akame perform a MercyKill... which is subverted again when he survives that, too, though with the tragic implication that he'll be stuck in his dragon form until Akame finds something to restore his humanity]].
* DecoyProtagonist: In the anime, the titular Akame takes a backseat to Tatsumi for most of the series. But then [[spoiler: Tatsumi bites the dust in the penultimate episode, leaving Akame to kill Esdeath alone]].
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: In the anime, [[spoiler:he dies in Akame's arms]].
* DistressedDude: Tatsumi is captured and imprisoned by Esdeath once she decides to "make him hers". He manages to escape. Later, [[spoiler: he gets captured by Syura along with Lubbock. Despite being revealed as a member of Night Raid, Esdeath tries to convince him to join her one last time. Tatsumi refuses and Esdeath decides to execute him herself. [[ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend Mine then shows up at the last minute to save her boyfriend]]]].
* DoomMagnet: He tends to attract danger everywhere he goes. Even worse is that while Tatsumi tends to luck out of a dangerous situation, many of his comrades end up suffering. See his UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom entry for more details.
* DyingAsYourself: [[spoiler:He begs Akame to kill him before Incursio takes him over completely. She complies, and it unlocks her SuperpoweredEvilSide]]. Subverted [[spoiler:because he survives]].
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler:Unlike the anime, Tatsumi survives in the manga. Despite being stuck in a dragon form, he is able to live a happy life after Mine awakens from her coma]].
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: He starts out a BadassNormal but [[TakeUpMySword inherits Bulat's Teigu after his death]].
* EndearinglyDorky: Quite popular with the ladies and also prone to getting laughed at for his silly mannerisms by the other members of Night Raid.
* EnemyMine: Played with. After witnessing his abilities in a local fighting tournament, Esdeath drags him to the palace in the hopes of inducting him into the Jaegers--and to become her lover, despite not knowing that Tatsumi is part of Night Raid.
* TheEveryman: Tatsumi is a perfectly normal person who just wants to raise money for his village. He also has loyalty to any organization he belongs too. That's pretty much it. Even the parts of his character that are treated as special or unique, like his speed or combat prowess are pretty consistently outdone by the villain of the week. At least until he gets Incursio and develops something approaching a character arc.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: When [[spoiler:Incursio gains a powered up form]], his eyes have [[spoiler:Tyrant's]] cross-shaped pupils. Even after he stops wearing the armor, his right eye remains that of [[spoiler:Tyrant's]].
* ExpressiveHair: His IdiotHair has a tendency to be expressive during emotional moments. When Esdeath walks into her bedroom half naked, [[SomethingElseAlsoRises it stands straight up]].
* FailureHero: While a likable, humane character, he has repetitive shortcomings. Stemming from his inability to stave off adversaries long enough ([[spoiler:Bulat]]), to inadvertently inspiring comrades to do more than they are capable of resulting in them getting killed ([[spoiler:Chelsea]]), wasting his time thinking he can convert the enemy (Esdeath), failing to make sure a dangerous enemy stays dead [[spoiler:and inadvertently giving the enemy a facial profile]] (Suzuka), leading up to capture and near execution by the empire either incapacitating or killing off more of his faction ([[spoiler:Lubbock & Mine]]). This is subverted near the end of the series due to his victory over the Emperor and Shikoutazer.
* FateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler:In the manga, he survives Akame's attempted MercyKill, and a rebel doctor is able to somehow restore his sanity, but it's suggested that he'll be stuck in his dragon form for the rest of his life]]. Subverted in that [[spoiler:he's okay with it, since at least he'll still get to live and be with his comrades]].
* FirstKiss: Tatsumi's was taken by [[VillainousCrush Esdeath]]. [[ClingyJealousGirl Understandably, Mine is upset by this]].
* FusionDance: Forcing [[spoiler:Incursio to evolve]] made him fuse with it, according to Budou. It explains why [[spoiler:he gains Tyrant's exotic pupils, even after he stops wearing the armor]].
* GoodEyesEvilEyes: Actively switches between soft TaremeEyes when he's lounging with friends, to razor sharp TsurimeEyes when he's ready to fight.
* TheHeroDies: He's one of the heroes of the series, likely the central one next to Akame. [[spoiler:And he dies at the end of the anime with a HeroicSacrifice to stop the Emperor's Imperial Arms from crushing civilians]].
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: Played in an odd way. Whenever using Incursio, Tatsumi has a head covering helmet as part of his armor. Yet reaction shots from him while wearing the full armor tend to not show the helmet even if he's still actually wearing it. So whether you see the helmet tends to change from panel to panel.
* HeroicRROD: Pushing Incursio beyond its limits puts an enormous strain on Tatsumi's body. The armor slowly consumes him the more he pushes himself. [[spoiler:It eventually turns him into another Tyrant, though he has Akame kill him [[DyingAsYourself before it can take over his mind as well]]]].
* IAmWhatIAm: Tatsumi doesn't seem to take any issue with [[spoiler:being permanently transformed into a dragon]]; he's satisfied with just being allowed to live.
* IdiotHair: He has a large forelock of hair on top of his head. About halfway through the story, said hair strand vanishes completely; possibly signifying a harsh [[CharacterDevelopment loss of innocence]].
* ILetGwenStacyDie: While Tatsumi feels remorse over every member of Night Raid who has died, it's [[spoiler:Lubbock's death and Mine becoming comatose]] that hits him the hardest.
* InnocenceLost: Tatsumi starts off as an innocent teen who wants to make money for his village. After the death of his friends exposes the Empire's corruption, he becomes more jaded and remorseless. This is reflected in [[spoiler:his slow fusion with Incursio and Tyrant]].
* InterspeciesRomance: [[spoiler:At the end of the manga, Tatsumi is permanently turned into a dragon, but he and Mine still are very much in love and get married.]]
* {{Irony}}: He initially came to the capital to enlist in the Imperial Army, but was rejected because the recruiting officer was too busy drinking to take him seriously. It's only after he publicly displays the fighting skills he learned from Night Raid that the empire, specifically Esdeath, shows an interest in recruiting him, but by that point it's ''far'' too late.
* KubrickStare: Gave a pretty chilling glare to Esdeath out of pure disgust and anger towards her and the empire after she relegated Lubbock's death to him.
* MarkOfTheSupernatural: [[spoiler:His right eye gains Tyrant's pupil, showing that his body is slowly being consumed by Incursio]].
* MeaningfulName: The "Tatsu" in "Tatsumi" is an alternative word for "dragon" in Japanese, alluding to his association with the dragon [[LivingWeapon Tyrant]] living within Incursio.
* MementoMacGuffin: The parting gift given to him by the village chief is a charm that blocks Akame's [[OneHitKill Murasame]] from killing him.
* MercyKillArrangement: [[spoiler:As Tatsumi slowly loses his humanity due to becoming one with Incursio, he asks Akame to kill him once the transformation is complete and he's taken over by Incursio. Akame does comply with their promise... Except she only kills Incursio's spirit so Tatsumi can keep living, even if in the body of a giant dragon. Tatsumi is happy enough with this]].
* MoralityPet: {{Subverted|Trope}}, at first Tatsumi believed that he could appeal to Esdeath on this level. Esdeath makes it apparent she's beyond saving or pity for that matter.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Tatsumi get this feeling after he and Leone assassinated two corrupt official when he hear the voice of the son of one of the official calling for his father as he walks in and see the corpse of his father. Unable to bear it Tatsumi run and can't stop thinking about it as he try to clean his sword as he remind himself that the man he killed may have been corrupt, but to his son he was a good father.
* NaiveNewcomer: Incredibly naive when he first arrives in the empire, even getting scammed by Leone out of all his cash and almost killed because of his lack of common sense. Fortunately he gets better.
* NextTierPowerUp: He starts the series fairly competent, but without an Imperial Arms of his own, he didn't stand a chance against opposing users. Bulat passes on Incursio to him and tells him how to use it before he dies and it lets him hold his own, but eventually that has a limit as he's still inexperienced using it. [[spoiler:Eventually, he pushes Incursio even further and evolves it to the point where he's on par with ''Esdeath and Budo'']].
* NiceGuy: Kind even to his enemies, [[TooDumbToLive which almost got him killed a number of times]].
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: While it was his best option to take out a Rakshasa demon by dropping a building on her so he could come to Mine's aid, the fact that said demon ''survived'' this led to said demon [[spoiler:setting up a trap to drop a building on Akame]] not to mention getting him getting outed to Esdeath and The Empire.
* NoBodyLeftBehind: [[spoiler:In the anime, his body disappears into nothing after Esdeath freezes both of them together]].
* NormallyIWouldBeDeadNow: Near the end of the manga, he manages to survive [[spoiler:slowly losing his body and mind to his Teigu, being impaled and ''crushed'' beneath the Ultimate Teigu, and surviving Murasame's poison to live happily with Mine]]. Jeez.
* ObliviousToLove: He utterly fails to notice Mine's feelings for him. It takes Mine kissing him for him to understand she loves him.
* OfficialCouple: He and Mine ''finally'' become a couple after she confesses her love to him. [[spoiler:They get married after the war is over]].
* TheOneGuy: [[spoiler:He's the only guy in Night Raid after Lubbock's death]].
* OnlySaneMan: Occasionally acts as this in Night Raid.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: He quickly proves his worth as a fighter, but is initially outclassed by some of the stronger opponents due to his tactics, while other Night Raiders handle them with ease. [[spoiler:Incursio's evolved form fixed this issue]].
* PreMortemOneLiner: "You can beg the King of Hell for forgiveness."
* ThePromise:
** [[spoiler:He vows to make Mine his wife after the latter falls into a coma and after the war is over]].
** He also makes a promise with Akame: [[spoiler:if either of them is to be consumed by their Teigu, they should kill the other, as both of them would be honored to die at their comrade's hands]]. Akame [[spoiler:ends up having to collect on that first, though he does survive]].
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: He delivers a big to [[spoiler:The Emperor]] who had been firing indiscriminately at friend and foe alike [[MistreatmentInducedBetrayal and was subsequently abandoned by his own forces]]. In return, the [[spoiler:Emperor]] declares that his allies are cowards for fleeing.
* RedOniBlueOni: The calm and mature Blue Oni to Lubbock's Red Oni.
* RetiredBadass: The manga epilogue says [[spoiler:after the war, Tatsumi retired to the countryside to live a quiet and peaceful life with Mine]].
* SkilledButNaive: Being someone from the country, he hasn't had quite as much fighting experience as the rest of the Night Raid, causing to attack rather recklessly in some of his battles.
* SlaveCollar: After Esdeath decides to make Tatsumi hers, she collared him in the arena and tried to drag Tatsumi off. When that failed, she just knocked him out.
* SoleSurvivor: Ieyasu and Sayo do not survive the trip to the capital, leaving Tatsumi the only survivor amongst his friends.
* SorryThatImDying: In the anime, [[spoiler:right before he dies, he apologizes to Akame for not being able to keep his promise to survive]].
* StarCrossedLovers:
** In the manga, Great Lord implied Tatsumi's romance with Mine won't end well. [[spoiler:It's subverted at the end; Tatsumi turns into a dragon, but Mine recovers from her coma and marries him.]]
** In the anime, [[spoiler:Tatsumi loses Mine, only learning of her feelings for him when she's dying. He gets killed in the final battle shortly after, joining Mine in death.]]
* StealthPun: As a result of [[spoiler:evolving Incursio and slowly fusing with Tyrant]], Tatsumi has become a [[TitleDrop Red-Eyed Killer]].
* TheStoic: After [[spoiler:Mine enters a coma]] he pretty much stops smiling entirely.
* SuperpowerLottery: Zigzagged, borderlining Inverted and Subverted tropes. For while his newest evolution grants him the ability to do battle with [[InvincibleVillain Esdeath]] and nerf her [[EvolutionPowerup Space-Time Freeze]] it also runs the risk of him [[SuperpowerMeltdown transforming into a new body for the inherent entity]] housed within his Teigu enabling it to rampage unabated throughout the kingdom.
* TookALevelInBadass: Chapter 54, [[spoiler:he ''forces'' Incursio to evolve even further]]. It not only makes him strong enough to keep up with the Empire's strongest warriors, but he's also capable of {{No Sell}}ing Esdeath's TimeStandsStill ability, albeit briefly.
* TransformationHorror: [[spoiler:He can only use Incursio about four more times before he completely fuses with it, [[http://41.media.tumblr.com/7b2dbd6cea21edcf8b662e7510014bdd/tumblr_nrqvqtMO5S1rd83duo1_500.jpg this]] is the result of using it ''once''. The more times he uses it, Tatsumi slowly becomes less human and he eventually completely transforms into a giant dragon]].
* TraumaCongaLine: He loses his friends in the first episode, is forced to join an organisation full of killers to provide for his village, loses multiple comrades as the story progresses, ends up as Esdeath's target of affections, and [[spoiler:his girlfriend ends up in a coma causing the loss of his cheery smile and laughter]]. Finally; as if to top it all off, he's started slowly, painfully [[spoiler:turning into the physical manifest of Incursio's inner essence; Tyrant]], with each successive activation of his Teigu. Each new [[PowerUpgradingDeformation change]] proving more agonizing than the last. [[spoiler:In the end, he defeats the Emperor, but is unable to stop Esdeath and begs Akame to kill him before his mind devolves into a mindless beast, and she attempts to, but he survives that as well]].
* UnskilledButStrong: He lacks some of the more refined skills of the Night Raiders, but makes up for it for his overall fighting ability and speed. As the story progresses, he gradually becomes a better and more skilled fighter.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: While he might not seem like this at first, FridgeHorror kicks in when you realize that Tatsumi has indirectly, yet unintentionally, caused the deaths of EVERY Night Raid member, with the exception [[spoiler:of Leone]] in the manga. Going down the death in order:
** [[spoiler: Sheele's death]] at the hands of [[spoiler: Seryu]] occurred because [[spoiler: Seryu]] began to actively hunt down Night Raid to avenge the death of [[spoiler: her mentor, Ogre.]] Remember who killed [[spoiler: Ogre]] ?
** [[spoiler: Bulat's]] concern for Tatsumi's safety during their fight with the [[spoiler: Three Beasts]] definitely proved to be hindrance to him. In addition, had Tatsumi just held off [[spoiler: Nyau]] for just a few more seconds, [[spoiler: Bulat would have been able to kill Liver, and thereby preventing his own death.]]
** [[spoiler: Chelsea's]] death at the hands of [[spoiler: Kurome]] was caused by [[spoiler: her, out-of-character, brash decisions.]] [[spoiler: Chelsea]] admits to herself that her out-of-character actions was the [[LoveMakesYouDumb result of her feeling for Tatsumi]], as well as her desire to impress him.
** [[spoiler: Susanoo]] was killed by [[spoiler: Esdeath]] when she used her recently acquired Trump Card, [[spoiler: Mahapadma, which had the ability to freeze time,]] to defeat him. Remember, originally [[spoiler: Esdeath]] developed this ability to prevent Tatsumi from escaping her again after his escape at Mt. Fake.
** [[spoiler: Lubbock's]] death at the hands of [[spoiler: Izou]] was the result of [[spoiler: Lubbock trying to escape capture.]] [[spoiler: Lubbock was only captured]] because Syura was able to identify Tatsumi. Syura even admitted that he was not entirely sure that [[spoiler: Lubbock]] was a member of Night Raid, and only [[spoiler: kidnapped him]] because he was with Tatsumi.
*** Even worse, Syura was able to easily identify Tatsumi partly because he had already seen Tatsumi once in person during the danger beast incident. Remember, Tatsumi was the one to convince the rest of Night Raid to fight the danger beasts instead of letting the Jaegers take care of them. Talk about NiceJobBreakingItHero.
** [[spoiler: Mine ended up in a coma]] because of her decision to save Tatsumi from his [[spoiler:execution at the hands of Esdeath.]]
*** The icing on the cake of this example is that [[spoiler: Esdeath reveals that Tatsumi was not in any real danger of being killed, and would have survived his apparent "execution", whether or not Night Raid would have saved him. However, she did plan to sneak him away to an unknown location, meaning he would have still been a prisoner for her crazed ideas of love.]]
* WeakButSkilled: He lacks the raw strength of a Teigu user at first, but his training does put him on even footing with some of them, and it makes him a ''monster'' against normal people. [[spoiler: The 'weak' part is pretty much gone by chapter 54.]]
* WhenHeSmiles: His smile is what catches Esdeath's affections. [[spoiler:He stopped smiling much after Mine's coma, he cracks a faint one of relief after Kurome was convinced by Wave to quit working for the Empire, sparing Akame the pain of having to kill her younger sister.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: He kills Aria (a teenager) with no hesitation. But in his defense, she was a psychopathic monster.

* EleventhHourSuperpower: In the anime's climax, he awakens Incursio's ultimate potential, growing vastly stronger and gaining {{Flight}} thanks to the Tyrant beast's adaptive ability. In the manga, he forces Incursio to evolve multiple times during the final fight with [[spoiler:the Ultimate Teigu]] in order to stay in the game against it, eventually [[spoiler:destroying the massive weapon ''without'' dying, though he still [[FateWorseThanDeath ends up paying a steep price]]]].
* AdaptiveArmor: Due to Tyrant's aptitude for adaptation and evolution the armor also inherits its AdaptiveAbility. As such, if Tatsumi needs to be faster, the armor will strengthen his legs, or if Tatsumi needs to be tougher it'll make itself harder.
* BadassCape: One of these comes with it.
* CoolMask: A helmet with a mask comes with it.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: Pushing Incursio into evolving eventually makes just activating it dangerous for Tatsumi. [[spoiler:Tatsumi eventually begins fusing with Tyrant and may only activate his armor Four more times, now going on Three, before Tyrant consumes him completely]]. Already showing signs of his body converting further into Tyrant's draconian form by the end of chapter 61.
* FlawedPrototype, SuperPrototype: To Grand Chariot. Incursio has the potential to become stronger due to its AdaptiveAbility, but [[spoiler: at the price of consuming the user and transforming their body into that of Tyrant's]].
** Though [[spoiler:Tyrant slowly taking over Tatsumi]] is explained by him being too young to handle the Teigu's power (as opposed to Bulat, its previous user), Bulat never pushed Incursio to evolve beyond limits as Tatsumi did.
* {{Flight}}: In both the anime and the manga, Incursio eventually evolves to the point it sprouts a pair of dragon wings, [[spoiler:in order for Tatsumi to better fight the Ultimate Teigu]].
* InstantArmor: The user can summon this armor at will.
* InvisibilityCloak: He can become invisible for a limited amount of time.
* {{Leitmotif}}: The aptly named [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALin6ZWsjoI "Incursio"]]
* LivingWeapon: Tyrant still lives within the armor, accounting for its formidable AdaptiveAbility as well it actively protecting Tatsumi from attacks he cannot avoid or block. [[spoiler: After Tatsumi fuses with it in Chapter 54, it is revealed it will consume him if overused in exchange for immense power on par with Esdeath and Budou. Taken to the extremes during the battle with the Ultimate Teigu, as he uses it so much the Emperor notes ''he's not even human anymore'' according to his scanners.]]
* MoveInTheFrozenTime: [[spoiler:Esdeath develops a technique to freeze time itself. Incursio is the only thing that can move when this technique is in effect, even if only for a second. Esdeath realizes this is thanks to Incursio being able to adapt to a frozen tundra after evolving.]]
* NighInvulnerability: Incursio's known for its nearly indestructible defense.
* OneWingedAngel: As of chapter 75 [[spoiler:Tatsumi has become possessed by the Super-Class Danger Beast Tyrant.]]
* PowerArmor: The armor was created from the flesh of Tyrant, whose life force was so great that the beast is still alive within the armor.
* RedBaron: Demon Dragon Armor: Incursio.
* UselessUsefulSpell: Its invisibility powers are rendered useless against enemies who can sense his presence.

-->''"Now let's go punish this scumbag."''
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/RisaMizuno (Japanese), Creator/ShelleyCaleneBlack (English), Nicole Apstein (Latin American Spanish)
The head of the assassination group Night Raid, Najenda was a former general of the Empire that made the decision to defect to the Revolutionary Army after witnessing how morally bankrupt and corrupt the regime was from the actions of her colleague, General Esdeath. She successfully bands an army of her men together to defect to the Revolutionaries until she is blind sided by Esdeath's army in which she nearly lost all of her men and narrowly escaped death by her... with the exception of a shattered arm and a lost eye. During Dr. Stylish's assault on the Night Raid's hideout she reveals her two new recruits: Chelsea and the humanoid Teigu, Susanoo.

Her last known Teigu, Speed of Lightning: Susanoo, is a living humanoid Teigu that functions as the user's bodyguard and servant, who can both fight and do household chores extremely efficiently on behalf of the user.
----
* ActionGirl: At one time she was nearly as strong as ''Esdeath''.
* AgeInsecurity: Asking Najenda about her age is a major BerserkButton for her.
* ArtificialLimbs: Her right arm is mechanical, destroyed in an ambush by Esdeath along with an eye, when the latter found out that she had defected.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:She adopts a child in the finale, but never marries]].
* BadassNormal: She doesn't have a formal Teigu like the rest of Night Raid (as Susanoo has his own life and can fight without the help of Najenda), but her strength is something to consider, as she destroyed a former general with only the 40% of his power, and this enemy gave Leone (with Teigu equipped) a hard time.
* BerserkButton: The other Night Raid members are horrified when Tatsumi thoughtlessly comments Najenda looks too old for a woman in her mid-twenties. In retribution, she gives him a savage pounding that leaves him little more than a pile of lumps.
* BigGood: She's the one leading Night Raid in their battle against TheEmpire.
* BlemishedBeauty: She's missing an eye and an arm, needing to wear an eyepatch and a prosthetic arm. Despite this and her masculine look, she's still quite attractive.
* BoyishShortHair: She has short hair to complement her strong and imposing personality.
* BraidsOfAction: Back when she was a general of the Empire, Najenda had longer hair and she wore it tied and braided.
* CastFromLifespan: She is able to give Susanoo an enormous power boost, but it requires her to sacrifice a portion of her lifespan.
* CelibateHeroine: She's too focused on leading a rebellion to think about dating. Although she admits she could consider starting a relationship with Lubbock after the conflict is over.
* DefectorFromDecadence: She used to be a general in the Imperial army alongside Esdeath, but joined the Revolutionaries after seeing her in action.
* EyepatchOfPower: She wears an eyepatch over her lost right eye. This gives her the look of a tough and experienced leader.
* EyeScream: She lost her eye to Esdeath.
* HandicappedBadass: After losing an eye and her right arm she comments that she can only use about 40% of her original strength. Her crippling is also why she can't use Teigu until she receives the energy-efficient Susanoo. This doesn't prevent the fact that she can still [[CurbStompBattle curb stomp]] general class opponents with ease.
* IdenticalStranger: The reason Susanoo responded to her is because she resembles his previous master, who much to Tatsumi and Leone's amusement, [[LadyLooksLikeADude was a man]].
* InformedDeformity: A RunningGag is that Najenda's gender gets confused a lot. Putting aside her large breasts and curve-hugging outfit, you can see from the picture above that she doesn't look particuarly masculine.
* InSeriesNickname: [[TheLeader "Boss"]] and [[EmbarrassingNickname "The Hunk of the Rebellion"]].
* IronLady: Has the cool effectiveness down pat. This is not a woman you want to cross. And she has PowerHair, to boot.
* LadyLooksLikeADude: She has a masculine appearance to the point where Susanoo compares her to his former ''male'' owner.
* TheLeader: A mix of Type I and II. She is the one who assigns the separate members of Night Raid to the requests that are given to them and pairs them according to whose strength is suited for the task. It was her plan that tricks Esdeath into wiping out a gang of bandits for the Night Raid and leads to the [[spoiler:death of Bols and the weakening of Kurome]].
* TheMourningAfter: The epilogue to the manga mentions [[spoiler:Najenda would end up adopting a child after the war is over, but would remain single for the rest of her life]]. This leaves the implications that she never fully gets over [[spoiler:Lubbock]]'s death.
* MsFanservice: She's almost always wearing a shirt with a low neckline. Her naked body is seen in Lubbock's ImagineSpot ([[HandOrObjectUnderwear with her robot arm covering her chest]]) and we've seen her much less conservative outfits on a few occasions.
* PlotArmor: It is known that activating [[CastFromLifespan Magatama Manifestation]] three times kills the user. [[spoiler:But when Najenda activates it for the third time in her battle with Esdeath in the Bolic arc she luckily survives only due to the fact that Susanoo reached his physical limit before her life force did]].
* PragmaticHero: As a RebelLeader, much of the series' bloodshed and tragedies can be traced back to her ambition. However, all of her actions are for the sake of a better future.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: When she first meets Tatsumi, she gives him an offer to join Night Raid and says they won't kill him if he refuses, though they can't let him leave either since he knows where their base is. She also tells him about what they do, which is to kill people who do evil things, and that they're fighting against the Empire to ease the burden on the people. Her painting the image that way helps convince him to join.
* RebelLeader: She's the leader of the Night Raid and The Revolution, which are the main forces fighting against TheEmpire and its corruption.
* RocketPunch: With her right arm, and can use it to pull herself forward too.
* SecondEpisodeIntroduction: Of all the original members of Night Raid, Najenda is the last introduced to the audience, as she appears in the second chapter of the manga and the second episode of the anime, when the rest of the members appears in the first one.
* ShipperOnDeck: She apparently ships Tatsumi x Mine. She was actually on the one to convince Mine to make a move on Tatsumi before Leone does.
* ShipTease: She's not terribly opposed to the idea of hooking up with Lubbock, but she'd rather hook-up after the conflict is over. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, that will never come to pass]].
* SmokingIsCool: Najenda is rarely seen without a cigar. She especially likes to smoke while looking badass.
* SupportingLeader: While Najenda is the leader of Night Raid, she rarely goes into the field herself. As a result, she is more of a supporting character than a main character.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: In past she somehow succeeded in persuading Akame to abandon her mission of assassinating her and defect from the Empire, while also effectively recruiting her into the Night Raid and joining the Revolutionary Army. What makes this ''more'' incredible was that at the time Akame was the Empire's ''top assassin''.
* TomboynessUpgrade: Najenda [[{{Bifauxnen}} makes for one helluva handsome dude]], but when she was younger, she was a lot more feminine-looking and a top beauty in the empire who had to constantly turn down marriage offers (which is something [[ProudBeauty she still likes to boast about]]).
* TragicKeepsake: [[spoiler: She keeps Lubbock's goggles with her after his death.]]
* YouMonster: Delivers this reaction to Kurome. She despises Kurome's Teigu because she feels it desecrates the dead.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: When she reveals she's in her mid-20s, Tatsumi is surprised that she's much younger than he thought based on her mature looks and experience as a soldier.

-->''"There is no way to train your heart to be invulnerable."''
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YoshitsuguMatsuoka (Japanese), Creator/TylerGalindo (English), Matías Carossia (Latin American Spanish)
Originally born the fourth son of a wealthy merchant family in a region, Lubbock left his wealthy life behind to follow Najenda when she served in the Empire and rose through the ranks to serve her by her side. When she defected to the rebellion he joined her and faked their deaths by changing the military records of both him and her as K.I.A.

His Teigu, Infinite Uses: Cross Tail, consists of garrote wires on gloves that can be shaped and manipulated in a myriad of ways, doing everything from enemy detection, laceration, strangulation to creating a variety of makeshift weapons and armor.
----
* BadassLongcoat: Dons a long green coat with a fur-rimmed hood.
* BromanticFoil: To Tatsumi, being the silly, extroverted pervert to make Tatsumi seem more mature.
* ButtMonkey: Par course for his behavior in the Night Raid. He's either [[PervertRevengeMode beaten to a pulp]] by Leone or [[LaserGuidedKarma running away from Bulat's affection]]. Mine even states this is his designated role in the group.
* CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest: He's remarkably respectful towards Najenda despite his tendencies.
* CasanovaWannabe: He always tries to woo any cute girl he sees. Unfortunately for him, they're either not interested or [[FemmeFatale trying to kill him]].
* ChivalrousPervert: He's often spending his free time trying to peek on [[MsFanservice Leone]] in the hot springs or cursing Tatsumi for his ChickMagnet status. He does show chivalry sometimes such as when he takes on two Rakshasa Demons to save a young Night Raid spy, and generally dislikes harming women.
* ColdBloodedTorture: After being captured by the [[spoiler:Wild Hunt]], he is subjected to this, including a GroinAttack.
* ConservationOfNinjutsu: Averted. He tends to prefer one on one combat, and excels at that. However, in episode 11 when he encounters several EliteMook all at once, he wisely runs away from them. Considering one gave him trouble, a lot of them was more than he could handle. Though they give chase, Akame fortunately saves him.
* CrazyPrepared: He hides wires under his clothes, around his body and even in his mouth.
* CripplingCastration: As part of [[spoiler:Syura's]] ColdBloodedTorture. [[spoiler:[[{{Squick}} He's missing one testicle now]]. Amazingly, Lubbock didn't break even after this.]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He's shown to be the ButtMonkey for his perverted tendencies and jealously of [[ChickMagnet Tatsumi]] during the story, but in the midst of combat he demonstrates he can be quite the cunning and dangerous opponent as shown from his victory over two of the Four Rakshasa Demons, who have been known to be a group skilled in the art of killing Teigu users.
** He takes full advantage of this trope when [[spoiler: being tortured by Syura. He pretends to be broken by his torture in order to use the spare bits of his teigu he keeps hidden in his mouth to break his neck.]]
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Green hair and eyes.
* DeathByAdaptation: In the manga, he dies fourteen chapters after [[spoiler:Seryu's death]] while in the anime he dies only one episode after [[spoiler:she is killed.]]
* DefectorFromDecadence: As with Najenda. In fact, he joined the Night Raid out of love for her.
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler:Right till his death, in spite of serious torture and ridiculously poor odds against the Castle's invincible security. This is lampshaded by multiple characters.]]
* DiesDifferentlyInAdaptation: While Lubbock gets cut in half by [[spoiler:Izou]] in the manga, he gets brutally stabbed by [[spoiler:Syura's group]] in the anime.
* DisguisedInDrag: One of his many civilian disguises is a woman.
* DoggedNiceGuy: Towards Najenda. He joined the Imperial Army and later the Night Raid just for the opportunity to be close to her. For the most part it's a one-sided affection on his end. However, in a small side story Najenda muses to herself that she may just be open to a relationship after the war is over. [[spoiler:Naturally Lubbock ends up getting killed off in the very next arc]].
* ExplainingYourPowerToTheEnemy: He spends much of his battles talking about how his powers work, which benefits the viewer. This actually has some practical use, as his talking is often meant to be a distraction.
* FlechetteStorm: Aside from his Imperial Arms, Lubbock also has a few knives handy to throw when he's desperate.
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: Lubbock is noticeable aroused whenever Leone subjects Akame to MarshmallowHell.
* GreenEyedMonster: ''Incredibly'' jealous of Tatsumi's status as the resident ChickMagnet.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: [[spoiler:Izou]] cuts off a good chunk of the left side of Lubbock's body during their fight. [[spoiler:As Lubbock slowly dies, Izou commends him for holding out as long as he did.]]
* HotBlooded: When it comes to his perverted antics.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: In a 1 on 1 fight, he's a pretty strong fighter, despite his slender appearance. He also has many tricks up his sleeve regarding his teigu, and often fools his opponent into thinking he used his most powerful attack, only to then be lured into a false sense of security when an attack or trap he laid out earlier catches them off guard.
* IfWeSurviveThis: Tells Tatsumi that once the rebellion is over, he'll try expanding his book shop and marry Najenda. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, he will never get that opportunity.]]
* IKnowMortalKombat: Claims that some of his uses of his wires were inspired by various manga he reads.
* ImaginaryLoveTriangle: He thinks he's competing with Susanoo for Najenda's affections. Najenda and Susanoo's relationship is completely platonic.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: In the anime, Lubbock [[spoiler:falls to his death and gets stabbed by Syura's group after the latter is defeated]].
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: It heavily implied that he suffers this. While he tends to act as a confident assassin in front of the other Night Raid members, in many of his internal thoughts reveals that he often doubts his own abilities to be useful for Night Raid's cause.
* LetsGetDangerous: He has this moment before engaging two Rakshasa Demon warriors.
* LovableSexManiac: He's a shameless pervert who constantly peeps on his naked teammates, but it's always played for laughs.
* LoveAtFirstSight: He fell in love with Najenda the moment he first saw her.
* MasterOfThreads: Lubbock's imperial arms are a pair of gloves with garrote wires named Infinite Uses: Cross Tail. He can shape and manipulate them in many different ways for both offense and defense. He admits that some of the uses for the wires were [[IKnowMortalKombat inspired by the manga he reads]], despite there being no prior indication of such things existing in the show's setting.
* NervesOfSteel: Takes out two of the [[MageKiller Rakshasa Demons]] by himself. [[spoiler: He holds out under torture, successfully fakes being broken by torture and kills Syura.]]
* PlayingPossum: He can feign death by using his Cross Tail to cut off his own circulation.
* RazorFloss : His imperial arms is a pair of gloves with spools of wire on the back that allow him to manipulate and shape the wires to use both offensively and defensively
* RedOniBlueOni: The perky, perverted Red Oni to Tatsumi's Blue Oni, even reflected by the red parts of his outfit.
* TheSmartGuy: He's the one that handles the alarms and defenses of the Night Raid's hideouts and he's also skilled in reconnaissance and information gathering.
* StraightMan: Very frequently early on, sharing the duty with Tatsumi.
* SubordinateExcuse: He joined the army and later Night Raid so he could be close to his beloved Najenda.
* TacticalWithdrawal: Regularly runs from fights he is not confident he will win, claiming self-preservation is key for an assassin.
* TooCleverByHalf: [[spoiler: When surrounded during his attempt to break out of the palace, Lubbock banks his final gambit on the belief that Izou would not cut through Syura's Teigu to kill him. The gambit backfires.]]
* TrapMaster: A lot of his tactics involve outsmarting and leading his targets into traps using his Imperial Arms.
* UndyingLoyalty:
** To Najenda. He gave up his comfortable rich life and joined a rebel group of assassins all in order to follow her and remain by her side.
** Also to Night Raid, ''big time''. [[spoiler:Even after ColdBloodedTorture at Syura's hands and even getting one of his testicles crushed he refuses to betray the Night Raid or even blame Tatsumi for his predicament.]]
* UnknownRival: He thinks of Susanoo as his rival for Najenda's love.
* WeakButSkilled: While he lacks the raw physical power of [[LightningBruiser Leone]] or the devastating Teigu attack power of [[OneHitKill Akame]], several characters note him to have a great deal of combat experience and a highly tactical mind, often defeating his enemies with intuitive uses of his Teigu.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Between being fatigued by being [[spoiler: tortured at the hands Syura, having Cross Tail taken from him,]] and armed with only a regular sword and [[spoiler: Syura's teigu, which was not working at the time (not to mention, was not likely drained of energy from just using it),]] Lubbock was understandably not in top condition when he was forced to fight [[spoiler: Izou]]
* WorthyOpponent: [[spoiler: Although his weakened and Teigu-less state meant he didn't put up much of a fight, his fighting spirit and courage leads Izou and Budou to praise him as this even after this death.]]
* WouldHitAGirl: He's seen killing a female assassin caught in one of his traps in episode 3. She begs him to let her go, but he refuses, stating that someone he knew once fell for a similar trap and died as a result. After he's done killing her, he laments having to kill such a lovely lady. And he does this again in episode 18 against Mez, the female Rakhasa demon.
* WrongGenreSavvy: [[spoiler: During his escape from the Palace, Lubbock ended up cornered by Izou and decided to place all of his bets on Izou not being willing to kill him if it meant destroying Syura's Teigu. Unfortunately, Izou is TheUnfettered.]]

* BarrierWarrior: The wires can be weaved into creating shields strong enough to deflect attacks.
* BuildingSwing: Lubbock can do this using his cables.
* DifficultButAwesome: His Cross Tail is noted to take a lot of skill to use and relies heavily on the user's inventiveness and ability to multitask.
* RazorFloss: Cross Tail was made from the body hair of a Danger Beast renown for their extremely durable and sharp body hair. As such Lubbock can alternate between using the threads for either strangulation or laceration.
* RedBaron: Infinite Uses: Cross Tail.
* ShapingYourAttacks: He can shape his thread into a throwing spear, a makeshift shield, armor, and an axe.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/todo_night_raid_hd.png]]
* AntiHeroTeam: Of the PragmaticHero and PayEvilUntoEvil kind. They want to take down the empire and rebuild society. However, they're willing to murder people and use ruthless tactics to achieve their goals. Even Tatsumi, [[NiceGuy one of the nicest members on the team]], had to resort to lethal force on numerous occasions.
* BadassCrew: [[JustifiedTrope Justified]]. Being a badass is a requirement to join Night Raid since the majority of their members are defected soldiers and generals of the Empire.
* TheBigGuy: Leone, Bulat and Susanoo to different degrees. Leone and Bulat are both of the BoisterousBruiser type while Susanoo is a GeniusBruiser.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: They're the weirdest people you'll ever meet. They're also a dangerous group of skilled assassins and one of the most powerful forces opposing the Empire.
* ColorCodedCharacters: All of them have unique colors for their hair and outfits, that the openings of the series emphasizes upon. They are:
** Akame: Red.
** Tatsumi: Light Blue.
** Mine: Pink.
** Leone: Yellow.
** Lubbock: Lime Green.
** Najenda: Olive Green.
** Bulat: Bluish Green.
** Sheele: Violet.
** Susanoo: Indigo.
** Chelsea: Bright Orange.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Every member of Night Raid has a painful past that caused them to take up arms against the Empire due to the Prime Minister's machinations.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Their name and symbol are dark colored and they are the heroes of the story.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Every member of Night Raid is equipped with a Teigu that they found or retrieved from the Empire.
* ExperiencedProtagonist: At the start of the series, Night Raid was already FamedInStory as a group of extremely dangerous and efficient assassins.
* FailureHero: [[{{Lampshaded}} Coined by Chelsea]]. More people on Night Raids side died than anybody working for The Empire, even The Jeagers only surviving members outlasted many of those who're killed by them in battle.
* {{Fanservice}}: Every Night Raid member is attractive, with all male members having had at least one ShirtlessScene, and all females featured completely naked at some point in the franchise. Ironically, the only girl that has yet to have a bathing scene is Leone, Night Raid's residential MsFanservice.
* GoodIsNotSoft: They don't have an option to be given who their [[TheEmpire enemy]] is.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Two of its tallest members, Bulat and Susanoo, far tower their female comrades, most of them only reaching up to their chest levels.
* ImNotAHeroIm: The Night Raid members state that they are murderers, not heroes. Then again, [[BlackAndGrayMorality their targets are utter monsters who deserve to die]], with each member trying their best to avoid killing innocents in the crossfire, so their claims seem to be little more than HeroicSelfDeprecation.
* LaResistance: They're assassins of the revolutionary army tasked with killing certain people in the Empire and collecting Teigu from fallen soldiers.
* TheLeader: Najenda is the leader of Night Raid, and hands out missions.
* MauveShirt: About half of Night Raid can be considered this, particularly [[spoiler:Sheele, Bulat, Chelsea, and Susanoo]]. While they're all interesting characters, each had potential for personal character arcs, but were killed off before anything could come to pass. [[spoiler:Sheele's]] death occurred just to show that AnyoneCanDie. [[spoiler:Bulat's]] death occurred to give Tatsumi character development [[spoiler:and a teigu]]. Night Raid's [[spoiler:two newest members, Chelsea and Susanoo]] were killed [[spoiler:shortly after they were introduced and within the same arc they were introduced or the next afterwards]]. Some fans have accused the creators of introducing [[spoiler:Chelsea and Susanoo just to be on the receiving end of the TheWorfEffect for the Jaegers, and to stall killing any of the "main" Night Raid members off]].
** An example that works in the opposite direction are certain members of the Night Raid who begin to appear from time to time about halfway into the story. They don't recieve much characterization and don't even get names, but they appear from time to time throughout the story and even get teigu of their own. One of them even recieves [[spoiler: Sheele's teigu after her death]]. And despite not getting much characterization or even a name, [[spoiler: they manage to survive to the end of the story against all odds]].
* MeaningfulName: Najenda called the group Night Raid because the majority of its assassinations occur at night.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: The Night Raid members explain to Tatsumi that even if they're doing it for the greater good, nothing changes the fact that they're murderers, and they will have to continue to be until the Empire is reformed.
* PragmaticHero: Every member of Night Raid is a genuinely good person at heart, but knows that in order to change the corrupt state of the empire they'll need to be merciless against anyone that stands in their way.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Even with the eccentric personalities of each member they all still manage to efficiently work together.
* SpellMyNameWithAThe: The team is occasionally referred to as "''The'' Night Raid".
* TrueCompanions: Every member has absolute trust and confidence in each others' abilities. If something happens to one of their members they're instantly devastated, and seek vengeance for them so long as it doesn't put the rest of the group and their mission at risk.
* {{Tyrannicide}}: At the end of ''Akame ga Kill!'', Night Raid killing off [[spoiler: Honest and the rest of his allies]] marks the beginning of the end for [[spoiler: the Empire]].
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: In a nutshell, many of their Teigus' trump cards are less than impressive than their main abilities compared to the antagonist faction. The few who actually have useful [[SecretArt special techniques]] are so embarrassingly [[RestrainingBolt limited]] in its usage it would fall as comical if it didn't end up getting you killed in a pinch.

On the other hand, [[spoiler:there was no indicator that Night Raid had lost another member, and the others have yet to find out about the result of her fight]]. The penultimate chapter reveals that [[spoiler:she did indeed survive, [[GoOutWithASmile only to die later]]. [[RasputinianDeath After she lets the citizens of the Empire take their proper revenge out on him]]]].
* AnArmAndALeg: Loses an arm against [[spoiler:Kurome]] but she's quickly able to reattach it thanks to Lionelle's HealingFactor and Lubbock's Teigu.
* AnimalMotifs: Lions, and cats in general.
* BerserkButton: Being a victim of surprise attacks. She loves doing the surprising, just not being on the other end of one. She also doesn't like people commenting on her weight.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: She is usually playful, laid-back and a HardDrinkingPartyGirl. However, another aspect of her personality is that she doesn´t tolerate injustice, even less that the rest of Night Raid. If you like to KickTheDog on a daily basis, she will kill you gruesomely and mercilessly, making sure you stay that way.
* BloodKnight: The biggest one within Night Raid. Najenda tends to berate her for not finishing off her foes just to have a good fight.
* BoisterousBruiser: Loves a good fight and exudes a ton of energy in and out of combat.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Her large chest is the very first thing Tatsumi notices about her, and is a constant MaleGaze focus.
* CatGirl: When using her Teigu, she gets a lion's ears, tail and claws, giving her the image of a cat woman.
* CatsAreMean: Averted, since she's probably the nicest member of Night Raid.
* CoolBigSis: Acts as this towards all of the members of the Night Raid except [[TheLeader Najenda]] and [[ChivalrousPervert Lubbock]].
* TheCon: Her first encounter with Tatsumi has her conning him out of buying her alcohol and eventually all of his money with the promises that she can get him commissioned into the army because of a contact from within.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Yellow hair and eyes.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Here teigu turns her into a were-cat and she is able retain her sexy looks.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Subverted. Tatsumi naturally assumed that Leone must have a dark history, as everyone else he had learned the pasts of had some sort of darkness that led them to their lives as assassins. [[spoiler:Leone simply just beat up some nobles that were abusing commoners because she didn't like that, and she was scouted by the Night Raid because of it]]. She also randomly came across her Teigu from a back alley merchant.
* DeadManWalking: [[spoiler: Thanks to fusing with Lionelle, she manages to cheat death long enough to deliver justice on Honest, and then have one final round of beers in celebration before going on to die in the streets, remembering how she met Tatsumi.]]
* DisneyVillainDeath: Zigzagged. [[spoiler: After having her teigu destroyed and being gravely injured by Honest in Chapter 71, Honest throws the wounded Leone off the balcony that they're fighting on, resulting in Leone plummeting several stories below. We do get to see the result of Leone's fall, as her body is crushed and even some of her intestines are spilling out. Despite all this, Leone survives the fall and defeats Honest thanks to fusing with her teigu, but she still isn't able to heal her internal injuries and dies at the end.]]
* DoubleTap: Unfortunately for [[spoiler:Dorothea,]] Leone seemed to pick on the fact that in this series, it is in your best interest to do this to your opponent.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: At the end of the series, [[spoiler:she decides to die with honor]].
* FurAgainstFang: Her fight with Dorothea can be considered this, a were-cat vs. a vampire-like alchemist.
* FusionDance: [[spoiler: She survives against Honest long enough to deliver cruel, cruel justice upon him because she fused with Lionel, like Tatsumi fused with Tyrant, but she is a walking corpse at this point.]]
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: More than once, Leone only manages to survive because of her HealingFactor. The biggest example was during her fight with Dorothea, as the alchemist's Teigu is practically a OneHitKill to regular people, but Leone manages to recover.
* GoOutWithASmile: In her final scene, [[spoiler:knowing that she won't survive the serious injuries Honest inflicted,]] she smiles peacefully as she thinks back to the first time she met Tatsumi.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: Has been seen with alcohol more than anyone else. Interestingly, she's also better at holding her liquor than anyone else.
* HellishPupils: Sometimes have these when she uses her Teigu.
* TheHeroDies: She is one of the main heroines of the series and [[spoiler:helps end Honest's brutal reign at the cost of her own life.]]
* HeroicRROD: [[spoiler: After Honest shatters her Teigu, Leone was still able to force a merge with it, much like Tatsumi did with Incursio. Unfortunately, she was unable to heal any of the internal injuries that she had occurred through the fight and ended up dying after the battle was over.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: She risks her life to [[spoiler:end Honest's reign]].
* HeroicSpirit: Leone's will power is her greatest strength. She can shrug off horrific injuries and push herself beyond her limits if she's determined enough.
* IfWeGetThroughThis: Leone jokes that if they all survive the rebellion, the gang should form a traveling circus.
* LecherousLicking: Licks Tatsumi's ear as a sign of flirting with him. Given that this is how cats show affection, it's quite in-theme for her.
* LightningBruiser: Fast enough to FlashStep across a mountain valley and strong enough to crush skulls and smash craters into the ground with one punch.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: She's hardly slowed down by injuries no matter how gruesome thanks to her HealingFactor. [[spoiler:She even carries on for quite a while after being fatally shot by Minister Honest.]]
* MarshmallowHell: Subjects Tatsumi to this to tease him much to his embarrassment and the [[ChivalrousPervert envy of Lubbock’s.]]
** In the manga (chapter 44), Leone also subjects Akame to this, much to Lubbock's [[GirlonGirlIsHot excitement]].
-->'''Leone:''' (glomps Akame) I'm completely healed, Akame!
-->'''Akame:''' Do that to Tatsumi, not me!
* MeaningfulName: Leone means "lion" in Italian.
* MsFanservice: A young busty woman whose IconicOutfit are {{Stripperific}} clothes and has the ability to transform into a CatGirl. Not to mention her tendency to [[TheGlomp glomp]] people.
* NiceGirl: She a major [[TheTease tease]] for such and she will [[GoodIsNotSoft definitely pound you if you are her enemy]], but outside of that Leone is easily the nicest member of Night Raid, as she is relaxed, upbeat, cheerful, and always ready to cheer up her friends when they need it.
* NowThatsUsingYourTeeth: Like catching throwing knives and biting off the tip of flamethrowers.
* PostVictoryCollapse: [[spoiler:After being fatally injured in the anime, Leone carries on long enough to see the rebellion's success. Only then does she finally succumb to her wounds.]]
* RasputinianDeath: [[spoiler: While not to the degree as Chelsea, Leone initially looked to have suffered one in the manga after losing her fight against Honest. After he shatters her Teigu, he caps her full of bullets and then throws her off a balcony. While she would survive it thanks to merging with her teigu, she was not able heal from the internal injuries she suffered and dies shortly after the final battle.]]
* ScarfOfAsskicking: She always wears a scarf.
* SkinshipGrope: She gropes Akame's ass in chapter 62, while jokingly offering to give Akame an [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything "erotic massage"]]. Akame wasn't amused.
* SpiritedCompetitor: She has a tendency to waste time on an assassination if she comes across particularly strong enemies. This particular trait gets her punished by Najenda at times.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her outfit is essentially a bikini with detached sleeves and detached pants legs. Make note of how this manga also has a LimitedWardrobe for almost every character.
* TheTease: Towards Tatsumi and later to Akame.
* TheWorfEffect: Because of the [[HealingFactor nature of Leone's powers]], she tends to get the worst of the beatdowns to show how deadly Night Raid's enemies can be.
* WouldHurtAChild:
** Subverted with [[spoiler:Dorothea; one of the main reasons she is able to kill her without mercy is the discovery that she is ''not'' actually a child but a woman who has kept herself in child form through scientific means]].
** Also subverted with [[spoiler:Aria, who was a child, as she asks Akame to do the honors of killing her instead, though Tatsumi ended up actually doing the job]].

!!!Teigu: Lionelle
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lionelle_dormant.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Dormant mode]]

* HealingFactor: An ability of Lionelle heightens the user’s ability to recover, allowing them to recover from near fatal wounds and reattach limbs with some assistance.
* LittleBitBeastly: After its activation the user grows the ears and tail of a lion, while their hands transform into large paws. Oddly, she still also has human ears in this form.
* OurWerebeastsAreDifferent: Technically, its ability is to change it's user into a were-cat, complete with healing factor.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: Activating Lionelle makes Leone's hair grow from being shoulder length short to being long enough to reach her back.
* RedBaron: Animal King: Lionelle.
* SuperSenses: Lionelle enhances the user's senses to superhuman levels.
* SuperStrength: All of her physical abilities are greatly amplified, and she can lift enormous stone pillars with ease.

-->''"You won't survive if you just let your boiling blood dictate your actions."''
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KatsuyukiKonishi (Japanese), Creator/DavidWald (English), Diego Muzlera (Latin American Spanish)
Once a high ranking Imperial Officer of the Empire, he defected after his former superior was framed for crimes he didn't commit because he refused to give into the Prime Minister's agenda. Whilst defecting he steals the Teigu Incursio and soon joins Night Raid. Known by his teammates for his passionate behavior, inhuman combat skill, and peculiar taste in men, Bulat soon takes a recently joined Tatsumi under his wing and trains him to be a stronger fighter.

His Teigu, Demon Armor: Incursio, is a short sword that can summon a full body armor that enhances the his physical strength and allows him to blend in with the environment.
----
* BadassArmFold: Engages in this trope ''constantly''—so much so that it's practically his default position. No, [[http://images6.fanpop.com/image/photos/38100000/Leone-Akame-ga-Kill-leone-akame-ga-kill-38196249-1280-720.png seriously,]] [[http://i.imgur.com/ohcXBPH.jpg these are just a few examples.]]
* BadassLongcoat: Back when he was at the Empire's service, he wore a white jacket. These days, he wears a black coat with spikes in the shoulders.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Tatsumi.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: All members of Night Raid are capable of superhuman feats, but Bulat's strength is on another level entirely from sheer training.
* CompressedHair: Somehow, his pompadour can fit inside the helmet of Incursio.
* DeathByIrony: [[spoiler: Killed by the same man who inspired him to defect from the Empire]].
* DefectorFromDecadence: He was an Imperial Officer of The Empire before leaving after realizing how corrupt the Prime Minister is.
* DelinquentHair: His hair is styled in the shape of a pompadour. A ''heart shaped'' pompadour.
* {{Determinator}}: Bulat stabs himself in the leg to avoid being affected by Nyau's flute Teigu.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: He gives Tatsumi one of these when he almost allows himself to be consumed by vengeance.
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:He dies with a smile knowing that Tatsumi will [[SuperiorSuccessor surpass him]]]].
* HeroicBuild: He is ''ripped''.
* HotBlooded: He is among the most emotional members of the Night Raid and he teaches Tatsumi to embrace these emotions but not to let them [[LeeroyJenkins consume him]].
* {{Hunk}}: Square-chinned, tall and muscular Bulat creates quite the contrast when standing next to Tatsumi.
* ManlyGay: Basically the poster boy for masculunity in the series. And he's not too subtle about his interest in men either.
* MeaningfulName: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulat_steel It's an old type of reinforced steel known in Russia]] and the name of a [[http://www.military-today.com/tanks/t64bm_bulat.htm pretty sturdy tank]].
* NiceGuy: One of the nicest members of the Night Raid when Tatsumi first joins.
* NotTooDeadToSaveTheDay: [[spoiler:He appears in chapter 74 to give Tatsumi the last minute encouragement he needs to avoid being controlled by Tyrant. Whether it's a ghost, a hallucination, or his spirit left in Incursio isn't clear.]]
* ObiWanMoment: He gives Tatsumi some important last minute instructions on how to [[spoiler:use Incursio, before succumbing to fatal poisoning by Liver]].
* OneManArmy: Implied to be this in his days serving The Empire. He easily kill groups of enemies and if Liver's words and his title of "The Hundred Man Slayer" are taken into account, he is this. It is actually, implied to kill more than one hundred men, he just thought the title "The Hundred Man Slayer" sounded cooler.
* RedBaron: [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast The Hundred Man Slayer.]]
* SatelliteCharacter: Arguably. Aside from his backstory, his Incursio, and other impressive abilities, Bulat never really has anything else to offer [[spoiler:(most likely due to dying so early in the story)]]. Instead, his character is largely defined by his interactions with Tatsumi: aside from constantly hitting on the latter to the point of RunningGag, he also acts as a BigBrotherMentor to him, and even [[spoiler:hands him Incursio before succumbing to death via Liver's poison]]. In addition, Bulat is ''rarely'' ever shown interacting with other Night Raid members, and only does so if Tatsumi is involved somehow. Finally, unlike Sheele, who has a HappyFlashback of her time with Night Raid [[spoiler:right before her death]], Bulat never experiences anything like that. [[spoiler:His final thoughts are only on Tatsumi, no one else.]] Take Tatsumi out of the equation, he's reduced to a background character who happens to be a really strong (gay) guy.
* ShirtlessScene: If he's not in his Incursio armor, then he's probably without his shirt, too, just for good measure.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: He was one of the most short-lived Night Raid members along Sheele and Chelsea, but his death provoked the development of Tatsumi and the obtainment of his Teigu.
* SpinToDeflectStuff: Spinning his halberd is enough to neutralize Liver's water cannon.
* TeamDad: Serves as a father role model type figure for many of the Night Raid members, especially for Tatsumi.
* ToughLove: Any advice he gives Tatsumi usually leads with a punch to the face. Bulat outright states he favors tough love.
* TransformationSequence: He gets a brief one when donning his armor, as shown in episode 3.

!!!Teigu: Incursio
* AdaptiveArmor: Due to Tyrant's aptitude for adaptation and evolution, the armor also inherits its AdaptiveAbility.
* BadassCape: One of these comes with it.
* ComboPlatterPowers: Incursio provides the wearer with enhanced strength, defense, the ability to conjure up a spear, and temporary invisibility.
* CoolMask: A helmet with a mask comes with it.
* InstantArmor: The user can summon this armor at will.
* InvisibilityCloak: He can become invisible for a limited amount of time.
* LivingWeapon: As with Tatsumi.
* NighInvulnerability: Incursio's known for it's near indestructible defense.
* PowerArmor: The armor was created from the flesh of Tyrant, whose life force was so great that the beast is still alive within the armor.
* RedBaron: Demon Dragon Armor: Incursio.

[[folder:Mine]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mine_anime_design.png]]
-->''"Wrong or not, I'll follow my own path!"''
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YukariTamura (Japanese), Creator/ChristinaKelly (English), Carolina Highet (Latin American Spanish)
One of the more unruly members of the Night Raid. Mine is a temperamental girl who enjoys flaunting her genius amongst her teammates. Having endured persecution as a child due to her half-foreign blood, she seeks to help change the western lands for the better.

Her Teigu, Roman Artillery: Pumpkin, is a rifle that can fire highly concentrated piercing shots of spirit energy. Pumpkin's secondary special ability magnifies the power of its shots in proportion of how much danger the user wielding it is in.
----
* ActionFashionista: Best showcased when she takes Tatsumi on a shopping spree through the capital as she tries on numerous articles of clothing, before making small talk about what's trendy in the current season.
* ACupAngst: One of the things [[TheGadfly Chelsea]] likes to do to piss her off is point out her small chest.
-->'''Chelsea:''' Oh my goodness, you're flat as a board, aren't you?\
'''Mine:''' [[BigShutUp SHUT UUUUUUP]]!
* AdaptationalModesty: She has ZettaiRyouiki in the original manga, but the anime gives her ProperTightsWithASkirt instead, preventing a PantyShot when Tatsumi uses Spectator's final ability.
* AdaptationalWimp: Mine's is a strong fighter in the manga; the anime, not so much. Not only does she possess some skill in hand-to-hand combat, as she is shown sparring with Akame, while in the anime she was purely a LongRangeFighter; but she managed to [[spoiler: defeat General Budo, who too was an Adaptational Wimp in the anime, and survive (even though she falls into a temporary coma), while in the anime she dies beating him.]]
* AnimeHair: Her pigtails are both very long and voluminous, with each individually being near equal the width of her head.
* AngerBornOfWorry: Her response to seeing Tatsumi [[spoiler:having fused with Tyrant, and adressing her as a dragon,]] is to repeatedly punch him in the chest for making her worry about him for pushing things too far.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:The epilogue of the manga reveals Mine has been pregnant with Tatsumi's child since before she went into a coma. After she regains consciousness, both leave to the countryside and raise a family together.]]
* BadassAdorable: This cute little, frilly dressed {{Tsundere}} is one hell of a sniper.
* BadassBoast: She casually stated the words below [[HopelessBossFight while facing off against General Esdeath and General Budo]].
-->'''Mine:''' Let's get this over with and go home.[[note]]She says this to Tatsumi who is bound to a cross, while confronting the two generals.[[/note]]
* BathtubScene: Gets one in episode 9.
* BattleCouple: She starts dating Tatsumi after Chapter 45 and they show the trope to the fullest in Chaoter 54 where both team up to fight Esdeath together [[spoiler: and bonus points for Mine being pregnant with Tatsumi's baby during said battle]].
* BelligerentSexualTension: She gets into a lot of arguments and fights with Tatsumi. Later on, they end up falling in love.
* ButNotTooForeign: She states that she was born and raised in the western borders of the Empire and because of [[FantasticRacism her half foreign blood]] she was often [[DarkAndTroubledPast faced ridicule and misery in her childhood]].
* CherryBlossomGirl: To compliment her pink outfit and hair, Mine is often visually paired with cherry blossom trees. Bonus points for later becoming Tatsumi's official LoveInterest.
* ClingyJealousGirl: After she and Tatsumi officially start dating, Mine literally clings to Tatsumi's arm and warns Leone to not flirt with him because Tatsumi is ''hers'' now. [[spoiler:After he transforms into a dragon and they get married, Mine is worried that Tatsumi might get seduced by a female dragon, only for Tatsumi to reassure her he only has eyes for his wife.]]
* ConvenientComa: She's left in a coma after she uses all of Pumpkin's power in order to defeat Budou. While this effectively gets her written out of the story, it leaves Tatsumi with the hope that she will eventually wake up. [[spoiler:She eventually does at the end of the series.]]
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Pink hair and eyes.
* CutenessProximity: Gets this in episode 12 from a kitten that cuddles up to her. Said kitten turns out to be Chelsea, who proceeds to [[TheGadfly steal her dessert.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She spent her childhood under harsh persecution from people for her half foreign blood. Her mission is to make the country anew so the Revolutionary army's alliance with the People of the West would allow diplomatic relations to grow causing many races to mingle and prevent tragedies like what she had to endure growing up.
* DeadlyDeferredConversation: Subverted. [[spoiler:She promises to confess her love to Tatsumi after they assassinate Bolic, a high-risk mission that involves fighting the Jaegers head-on. She survives, and while she gets cold feet at first, she eventually makes good on her promise and confesses.]]
* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:While she dies after defeating Budo in the anime, she survives in the manga, but ends up in a coma. She recovers in the final chapter and goes on to bear Tatsumi's child.]]
* DeathGlare: She shoots Seryu a ''vicious'' one when she rubs [[spoiler:Chelsea's horrible death]] in her face.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She starts off rather harsh to Tatsumi when he first joins Night Raid. Once Tatsumi takes his level in badassery, Mine accepts him as a comrade and eventually falls in love with him.
* DemotedToSatelliteLoveInterest: Mine is first presented as a well-established character with her own motivations to fight the Empire as everyone else in Night Raid. After she starts dating Tatsumi, Mine becomes Tatsumi's [[ClingyJealousGirl clingy]] girlfriend and while she does get an awesome moment where she rescues Tatsumi from being executed, she ends up in a coma immediately afterwards. From that point onwards, Mine stays completely out of the story and her only relevance is providing Tatsumi with a motive to survive so he can marry Mine [[spoiler:which he does at the end of the manga]].
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: In the anime, [[spoiler:she dies in Tatsumi's arms.]]
* DislikesTheNewGuy: Mine disapproves of Tatsumi and Chelsea joining the Night Raid more than anyone else. While she falls in love with Tatsumi after she watches his personal growth, she despises Chelsea for her tricksy behavior and mocking Sheele.
* DragonRider: [[spoiler:In a bonus chapter after the epilogue, Mine sits on the back of her dragon husband Tatsumi as they head to his village for their retirement.]]
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: In the anime, [[spoiler:she confesses her love for Tatsumi right before she dies]].
* ElegantGothicLolita: Her normal outfit and overall fashion sense embody this trope. She always wears a doll-like, frilly pink dress.
* {{Expy}}: She doesn't look too unlike [[Music/HatsuneMiku Sakura Miku.]]
* {{Foil}}: Is a foil of her main rival Seryu as both are cute but very deadly girls who use firearms and believe in combating injustice. [[spoiler: Seryu initially comes across as good hearted and genuinely sweet but is in fact a twisted psychopath obsessed with hurting others in the name of "justice". Mine in contrast initially comes across as very harsh but is actually a very sweet-natured person who only fights because she wants to end discrimination in the empire. In addition, Mine knows full well that while her goal is noble, killing people is not, Seryu however deludes herself into believing that hurting people including innocents is fine and just purging the empire of evil. While Mine despises Seryu for what she did to Sheele she still tries to understand her motives and sympathises with her somewhat, Seryu in contrast just sees Mine as evil that needs to be purged and mocks her grief over Sheele. Finally, Seryu died crying over not being able to complete her mission whereas in the anime at least Mine died with a smile after confessing her feelings to Tatsumi(and she survives the manga) ]]
* GirlishPigtails: Her hair is tied in twin-tails. One of the characteristics that identify her as a {{Tsundere}}.
* GirlyBruiser: As if it wasn't obvious, she has long pink [[GirlishPigtails pigtails]], wears a [[KickingAssInAllHerFinery long, frilly pink dress]], with matching shoes and ballet laces, and is [[ActionFashionista into fashion.]] And as a CherryBlossomGirl, she looks strikingly similar to [[Music/HatsuneMiku Sakura Miku.]] And obviously, none of this stops her from being a strong, aggressive ActionGirl([[AdaptationalWimp in the anime, at least]]) and a frighteningly accurate sniper.
* GlassCannon: She has destructive power and range but she [[SquishyWizard lacks any kind of defensive measure against counterattacks.]]
* HairTriggerTemper: She gets extremely angry with minimal provocation and usually deals with it by destroying everything in her immediate area with her Teigu or picking a fight with Tatsumi.
* HalfBreedDiscrimination: She was frequently persecuted as a child due to her half-foreign blood.
* HateAtFirstSight: She despises Chelsea from the moment they meet, especially because the latter [[ACupAngst made fun of her flat chest]].
* HeroicRROD: [[spoiler:She uses all of Pumpkin's power to defeat Budou so that Night Raid can escape. However, she's either unconscious (in the manga) or dead (in the anime) afterwards.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Sheele, who spends a lot of time with her and appears to be her BestFriend. [[spoiler:She makes sure to avenge Sheele's death later on in the story]].
* HypocriticalHumor: She hates how insulting Chelsea is to her comrades yet Tatsumi notes she acted the ''exact'' same way when he first joined.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: She earns every right to call herself a genius sniper when she headshots Lord Iokal without hitting any of the innocents surrounding him, from over a mile away, ''without even using a scope.''
* InsufferableGenius: In terms of her sniping skill, she's no doubt a genius. The only reason other characters don't comment on her impressive skills is because [[{{Pride}} she already beats them to the compliment]].
* InterspeciesRomance: [[spoiler: In the manga finale, Tatsumi turns into a dragon, but Mine still loves him and marries him.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's a cocky and temperamental fighter who regularly insults most of her teammates whenever they act silly. She still proves to be a good, morally correct person who does love her comrades and is grateful to people who help her. In addition, her motive for joining the revolution is a very pure one, wanting to ensure no one else has to suffer the pain of the discrimination she faced
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Mine likes to wear a nice frilly dress whenever she decides to kick ass.
* LastKiss: [[spoiler:She shares her only kiss with Tatsumi in her anime death scene]].
* LongRangeFighter: She has devastating range and attack power but she's only effective at a distance since most enemies can either [[MadeOfIron withstand]] or [[DodgeTheBullet outright dodge]] Pumpkin's shots.
* LoveEpiphany: After Tatsumi saves her from [[spoiler:Seryu]], Mine realizes she's in love with him.
* TheNapoleon: She's the shortest member of Night Raid and coincidentally, the most aggressive one too.
* NervesOfSteel: When [[spoiler:Tatsumi is about to be executed by Esdeath, she charges into the execution grounds]] and decides to confront [[WorldsBestWarrior Esdeath]] and [[FourStarBadass Budo]], the '''two most powerful and feared generals of the Empire''' without any signs of fear [[spoiler:in order to rescue Tatsumi]]. Bonus points for ''facing them alone''.
* NoblewomansLaugh: She does one in episode 3, complete with holding her hand by her mouth.
* OfficialCouple: She professes her love for Tatsumi shortly after he saves her from Seryu and they officially become boyfriend and girlfriend. [[spoiler:The epilogue states they get married after the war.]]
* PinkMeansFeminine: Wears gratuitous amounts of pink for the kind of story she's in, and is the most outwardly feminine of Night Raid's female members.
* PregnantBadass: [[spoiler:In the manga, Mine was pregnant with her and Tatsumi's child during her fight against Esdeath and Budou to save Tatsumi from execution, and she was pretty awesome.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:Gives one to Seryu before their second showdown. It's very much worth noting that Seryu couldn't see the evil within Ogre and Dr. Stylish, or within her own self for that matter, which makes this trope quite fitting.]]
* RedHerring: After [[DeadlyDeferredConversation promising to talk to Tatsumi about "something important" after the Bolic assassination]], there were ''many'' that expected her to be the casualty of the arc. [[spoiler:She isn't, Susanoo bites it instead.]]
* RescueRomance: She starts falling for Tatsumi after he saves her from [[spoiler:Seryu's [[TakingYouWithMe final attack]]]]. Although, she later admits she had feelings for him since before that; the rescue only [[LoveEpiphany helped her realize it]].
* RetiredBadass: [[spoiler:Around the time of Honest's demise, Mine recovers from her coma and retires to the countryside with Tatsumi, where they lived a quiet and peaceful life with their baby.]]
* RevengeMyopia: Albeit a self-aware example. She recognizes that Seryu was just doing her job as a soldier of the Imperial army by [[spoiler:killing Sheele]], but this doesn't stop her from swearing vengeance [[spoiler:that she enacts in full later on]].
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler:She kills Seryu to avenge Sheele's death as well as Seryu desecrating Chelsea's body.]]
* RoseHairedSweetie: Initially subverted as she has pink hair, but her personality is closer to a FieryRedhead. After her character softens and she develops feelings for Tatsumi, Mine starts fitting the sweet, romantic subtype.
* SilkHidingSteel: Beneath her public persona as a fashionable young woman who likes parfaits and frilly dresses lies one of the deadliest assassins in the world, capable of matching Akame in unarmed combat and sniping her mark out from a mile away.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She falls in love with Tatsumi after witnessing his personal growth into a strong, brave, and reliable man.
* SmallGirlBigGun: Pumpkin is nearly as long as she is tall.
* SmashSisters: With Sheele. They always team up in battle. She watched her back for enemies and the danger from the situation fuels the charge needed for her to fire her [[WaveMotionGun Pumpkin]].
* StarCrossedLovers:
** In the manga, the Great Lord hinted that his prophetic powers have told him Mine and Tatsumi's romance will end in tragedy. [[spoiler:Ultimately, this was subverted as Tatsumi and Mine get to stay together and live a happy life after the war despite Tatsumi's transformation into a dragon]].
** In the anime, [[spoiler:it gets played straight, with Mine dying right after she confessed her love to Tatsumi. He joins her in death shortly after.]]
* SympathyForTheDevil: Expresses pity for Seryu while giving her a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech, particularly when she has to state the sad truth: "You're insane."
* TeenPregnancy: [[spoiler:She's revealed to be pregnant with Tatsumi's child in the final chapter, with neither of them being older than 18.]]
* TinyTyrannicalGirl: She has a petite body-type and tends to treat her less fortunate teammates, such as Tatsumi and Lubbock, like her slaves.
* TokenWholesome: Every other girl in Night Raid is a MsFanservice to varying degrees except for Mine, who dresses the most modestly. Unlike most of the other female characters who got a FanservicePack in the anime, Mine received AdaptationalModesty instead.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Girly Girl to Leone's Tomboy. Mine acts and dresses much more femininely compared to Leone's laidback personality and {{Stripperiffic}} outfit.
* {{Tritagonist}}: Akame may be the {{Deuteragonist}}, but Mine is the one who goes through the most CharacterDevelopment after Tatsumi.
* {{Tsundere}}: Harsh type. When Tatsumi first joins the team, Mine belittles him for being a naive CountryMouse and if he gets her annoyed, she hits him or tries to blast him with her Pumpkin. Eventually, she comes to love Tatsumi as she recognizes his new maturity and he gets to see a lot of her affectionate side. After they start dating, Mine is totally lovey-dovey with Tatsumi and only gets angry when [[ClingyJealousGirl she feels jealous of other women making passes at Tatsumi]].
* TsurimeEyes: A typical trait of a violent and haughty {{Tsundere}}.
* UnknowinglyInLove: She starts to fall in love with Tatsumi after he inherits Incursio from Bulat and becomes more dependable, but doesn't notice her own feelings until he saves her after her fight with Seryu. [[spoiler:Soon after she admits her feelings, she asks him to be her boyfriend and they become a couple.]]
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She charges to rescue Tatsumi [[spoiler:from his public execution and faces Budo and Esdeath, ''the two most powerful and feared generals of the Empire'',]] on her own all in order to save her boyfriend.
* YoureInsane: She says this to Seryu when giving her TheReasonYouSuckSpeech. In this case, it's more to express pity instead of outrage or disgust.

!!!Teigu: Pumpkin
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pumpkins_forms.png]]

* AbnormalAmmo: Pumpkin fires highly concentrated piercing shots of spirit energy.
* AwesomeButImpractical:
** In order to make full use of Pumpkin's destructive potential, its user must be in constant danger.
** The weapon is also prone to overheating at the least appropriate moments.
* CastFromStamina: Pumpkin's spirit shots drain the user's energy. The reason why Najenda gave it to Mine was because her own GameBreakingInjury made her too weak to use it to its full potential safely anymore. [[spoiler:When Mine is forced to go all-out with it to kill Budo, the resulting drain either puts her in a coma in the manga or [[DeathByAdaptation straight-up kills her too in the anime]]]].
* CriticalStatusBuff: An ability of Pumpkin is that the power and range of the Teigu increases in proportion to the level of danger its user is in, with the bullets ranging from powerful small sniper shots to large destructive energy blasts when the danger hits its highest.
* InexplicablyAwesome: Not even Mine understands how her weapon works, only that it's an Imperial Arms, making it ancient and very deadly.
* MoreDakka: Pumpkin can also act as an assault rifle and can lay down enough fire to effectively trade shots with enemy gunners.
* RedBaron: Roman Artillery: Pumpkin.
* SniperRifle: Mine mainly makes use of it for sniping targets at long range.
* StoryBreakerPower: The nature of Pumpkin means that moreso than any other Night Raid member, Mine can punch far above her weight.
* SwissArmyGun: Pumpkin's barrels can be swapped out to change how it functions, with a sniper rifle, a machine gun, and even a laser sword as its possible forms. When powered up enough, it can become a WaveMotionGun.
* TakeUpMySword: Pumpkin was originally Najenda's back when she was a general. After getting crippled, Najenda no longer has the stamina to use it and mostly leaves the fieldwork to Mine and the rest.
* WaveMotionGun: Essentially what Pumpkin becomes when it's properly charged.
* WreckedWeapon: [[spoiler:Pumpkin is ultimately destroyed in Mine's final clash with General Budo]].

Growing up in the lower districts of the Capital, Sheele's clumsy nature made her a frequent target for ridicule amongst the people she wronged, leading her to live a life of depression and isolation. After finally making a friend that likes her in spite of her clumsiness she soon loses that friendship when she was forced to kill her friend's ex boyfriend when he attacked the pair in a fit of drugged rage. After losing her parents to a murderous gang out for revenge and effortlessly subduing said gang, she is soon recruited by the Night Raid so she may use her unnatural talent to efficiently kill to fix her society.

Her Teigu, Cutter of Creation: Extase, are a giant pair of scissors made with the strongest materials in the world, allowing them to cut through virtually anything. A secondary ability of Extase allows the user to emit a bright light from the blades, blinding unsuspecting foes.
----
* ActionGirl: She can easily cut her enemies in half with her scissors.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: She was ridiculed by many people throughout her life due to her clumsiness.
* AnimeChineseGirl: Sheele wears a UsefulNotes/{{qipao}} and she grew up in a very oriental-looking district.
* ApologeticAttacker: She has a tendency to apologize to her victims [[BondOneLiner after she kills them]].
* BadassAdorable: Don't underestimate her for her appearance, this cutie is really good at killing people.
* BecauseImGoodAtIt: She became an assassin because it's the only thing she's any good at. She's a total klutz at anything else.
* BespectacledCutie: Her glasses are only an addition to her being very much a CuteClumsyGirl.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's really nice and polite, but she won't hesitate to cut her assassination targets in half with her scissors.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: She's incredibly clumsy and bumbling for any normal task, but when it comes to assassinations, she's dangerous and efficient.
* BrutalHonesty: When asked to convince Tatsumi to make his decision and join the Night Raid all she simply tells him is that he [[HeKnowsTooMuch knows the location of where their hideout is]] so he has no choice but to [[AnOfferYouCantRefuse join or get killed.]]
* CleavageWindow: Her UsefulNotes/{{qipao}} sports a diamond-shaped cleavage cutout.
* CripplingOverspecialization: She's good at combat and nothing else, making her useless at many mundane tasks such as shopping, cooking, and cleaning.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: She's an utterly incompetent klutz, yet she has a natural talent for killing people and can cut her enemies in half with her scissors effortlessly.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Purple hair and eyes.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Perhaps her most defining trait outside of combat is her clumsiness. She even forgets important details regarding targets and has to be reminded on a daily basis.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She was always ridiculed for her clumsiness until she gained a friend who didn't mind it. That is, until one night her friend's doped up ex-boyfriend barged into her house and nearly choked her to death until Sheele killed him. Unfortunately, her friend ostracized her and a gang of men working under the ex killed her parents and was about to do the same to her until she killed them.
* ADeathInTheLimelight: She gets killed off in the sixth episode shortly after she explains her backstory and motive for becoming an assassin.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Even while she's slowly dying from [[spoiler:being ''[[HalfTheWomanSheUsedToBe ripped in half]]]]'' Sheele has enough strength to invoke Extase's LightEmUp ability, allowing Mine to escape further enemy reinforcements.
* DissonantSerenity: This is what makes her such an effective killer. She can shut down all unnecessary thoughts and focus her concentration on eliminating her target.
* EatenAlive: She is eaten alive [[spoiler: courtesy of Koro]].
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: Sheele always speaks very politely, even when she kills her assassination targets. Her personality alternates between a well-mannered BespectacledCutie and a cold-blooded ProfessionalKiller.
* GirlyBruiser: A shy and feminine girl whose hair and overall color scheme is [[GracefulLadiesLikePurple purple]]. Mess with her and she'll split your waist from your torso with her scissors.
* GoOutWithASmile: As she's being [[spoiler:[[EatenAlive consumed by Seryu's Koro]]]], Sheele thinks back to her last good moments in Night Raid before thinking about Tatsumi and gives one last smile.
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple: "Graceful" [[CuteClumsyGirl is a stretch]], but she's certainly feminine and composed, and likes the color purple. Even her hair is purple.
* HalfTheWomanSheUsedToBe: [[spoiler:She gets ripped in half by Koro before being eaten by him.]]
* HappyFlashback: Gets one as she dies, depicting all of her fond memories with Night Raid.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: She's good friends with Mine and they often pair up during missions.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Her main weapon is a giant pair of scissors.
* LingerieScene: She along with Akame and Mine are shown with only their underwear from Tatsumi's point of view when they tested Zanku the Beheader's Teigu on him.
* NiceGirl: She's an incredibly kind and caring girl, especially in episode 5, when she consoles Tatsumi after he realizes that there's no way to resurrect his fallen friends.
* ParentalAbandonment: Her parents were killed by the gang of the first man she murdered.
* SacrificialLion: She's made into a comforting figure for Tatsumi with a sympathetic back story and friendship with Mine only to be the first Night Raid killed off.
* ScarsAreForever: She has a scar on her right cheek that she tells Tatsumi was the result of a tough battle. [[spoiler: In actuality, [[CuteClumsyGirl the scar was caused by a careless Sheele scraping her cheek across a sharp tree branch.]]]]
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Her glasses tend to shine whenever she becomes serious.
* SexySlitDress: She dresses in a UsefulNotes/{{qipao}} with a thigh-high slit to show off her right leg.
* SimilarItemConfusion: She once was sent to buy salt, but made a mistake and bought sugar instead... Dozens of bags of sugar.
* SpecsOfAwesome: Although she's a CuteClumsyGirl with glasses, she's also an assassin who can tear people apart with her giant scissors.
* SmashSisters: With Mine. They always team up in battle.
* WeaponSpecialization: Before gaining [[ShearMenace Extase]], she favored knives, which she used to great efficiency in her first murder and the men who killed her parents.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: She gets killed by Seryu as early as in Chapter 9/Episode 6.

* {{BFS}}: The scissors' blades are about as long as Sheele's body and she often wields them like a sword.
* LightEmUp: Has the ability to generate a bright light to blind and momentarily stun opponents.
* RedBaron: Cutter of Creation: Extase
* ShearMenace: They're really big scissors used for assassination.

A living, self-aware Teigu. Despite not being human, he has a personality and quickly bonds with the other members of Night Raid.
----
* ArtificialHuman: He's a living Teigu created by the Empire.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: His philosophy when it comes to dealing with enemies in battle, reflected in his quote above. [[spoiler:Doubles as a DeathByIrony as Susanoo himself couldn't be killed until Esdeath destroys his core.]]
* AttackReflector: Mirror of Yata, a huge shield capable of reflecting any projectile attack.
* BattleButler: He was created to accompany important members of the Empire over long journeys while acting as a cook, medic, and bodyguard all in one, so he also knows how to cook and tend house.
* BigDamnHeroes: In his first appearance, he helps rescue Night Raid from Dr. Stylish.
* {{BFS}}: Ame no Murakamo, a gigantic sword capable of cutting through [[{{Kaiju}} Destaghoul]] ''in one swing.''
* ChickMagnet: Lubbock mentions that he'd like to take him into town one day to help him pick up chicks. Susanoo doesn't really understand but says that he'd be happy to help his allies in any way.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Blue hair and eyes.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: [[SuperMode Magatama Manifestation]], which absorbs his user's life force to power him up. Doing this three times will kill the user.
* DoAnythingRobot: He's an ArtificialHuman who can keep house, fight, cook, and just about anything else.
* EmpathicWeapon: At first he doesn't comprehend very well the human nature and only works with Night Raid because his user is Najenda, but with the time, he develops a true bond with them to the point of [[spoiler: sacrifice his own life to make his companions escape the Cathedral of Kyoroch.]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: He's introduced in episode 11 in the anime, and knocks out Dr. Stylish's EliteMooks with little trouble while having no issue with the knockout drug that was keeping the other Night Raid members aside from Tatsumi incapacitated. Even when Dr. Stylish sets off a couple of bombs near him, he recovers from it after a few moments. Also, in his introduction he combs Mine's hair, demonstrating his obsession with cleaning.
* FlashStep: Jewel of Yasakani.
* HealingFactor: Being a humanoid Teigu allows him to regenerate destroyed limbs within seconds.
* HeroicSacrifice: Using Magatama Manifestation three times will kill his owner, but Susanoo saves Najenda from this fate by using his life force instead, dooming him in her place.
* HolyHalo: It even [[AntiGravityClothing levitates behind his back]] for RuleOfCool.
* HornedHumanoid: He has large bull horns on his head.
* TheLastDance: Decides hold off [[spoiler:[[TheJuggernaut General Esdeath]]]] long enough for the remaining Night Raid members to flee after the assassination of Bolic.
* LivingWeapon: Well he is a teigu and therefore is technically a weapon.
* MeaningfulName: Named after the storm god of Japanese legend. [[PersonOfMassDestruction He's also the Teigu capable of the most destruction wielded by Night Raid.]]
* MrFanservice: Handsome, excellent at housework (especially cooking), and [[ShirtlessScene loses his shirt]] anytime he uses his trump card.
* MundaneUtility: While he's capable of holding his own in combat, he's also a good housekeeper and guard, originally designed to escort and protect rulers.
* NeatFreak: When he sees something out of place like someone’s hair or their clothes he immediately adjusts it perfectly.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Out of all the Night Raid member, Susanoo has by far the most destructive capabilities. This allows him to take out whole armies and powerful Danger Beasts.
* PowerDyesYourHair: When he's in his Magatama Manifestation form, his hair turns white.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Being a biological Teigu, he's would be at least 1000 years old.
* RealMenCook: Takes the role of being the Night Raid’s chef alongside Akame.
* RedBaron: The Speed of Lightning: Susanoo
* RedOniBlueOni: Out the two newcomers, Susanoo is the blue oni to Chelsea's red. He is even ColourCodedForYourConvenience.
* ReflectionlessUselessEyes: Susanoo's eyes are drawn with no highlights, which is more noticeable in the anime. This is probably to hint at his nature as a living Teigu.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler: Susanoo's death was meant to highlight just how far out of their league Night Raid was from trying to match Esdeath's strength.]]
* TheStoic: Being a living teigu, Susanoo tend to act very stoic and almost robotic. However, his time with Night Raid has allowed him to express his emotions more as the series go on.
* SuperMode: Magatama Manifestation, Susanoo's trump card that gives him a major power boost, allowing him to use powerful techniques such as [[TheImperialRegalia Ame no Murakumo, Mirror of Yata, and the Jewel of Yasakani]] but [[CastFromLifespan kills his master after being used three times]].
* TeamChef: He's known for making the giant creatures [[BigEater Akame]] captures into luxurious meals for the rest of the group.
* TokenNonHuman: He is a living teigu, so technically he is the only non-human member of Night Raid. In fact, Susanoo did not consider himself as member at first due to his static as a non-human.
* WorthyOpponent: To [[spoiler:[[BloodKnight Esdeath]]]] in his [[YouShallNotPass resolve to allow the remaining Night Raid to flee.]] [[spoiler:She even vowed to remember him not as a Teigu, but [[VillainRespect as a warrior]].]]
* TheWorfEffect: Despite all of his destructive power and his build up as one of Night Raids most powerful members, he ended be no match against [[spoiler: Esdeath, who ultimately kills him.]] This is further proof of just how crazy powerful his enemy is and how difficult it will be for Night Raid to overcome them.

[[folder:Chelsea]]
[[quoteright:183:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chelsea_anime_design.png]]
-->''"A girl's weapon is her makeup."''
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KaoriNazuka (Japanese), Creator/EmilyNeves (English), Josefina Becerra (Latin American Spanish)
A girl who joins Night Raid later on in the story. Her town was eradicated by the Empire upon suspicion of harboring rebels.

Her Teigu, Phantasmagoria: Gaea Foundation, is a cosmetic case that allows the user to take the appearance of whatever living creature they desire, from people to animals.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Chelsea's hair is orange-brown in the manga, but the anime makes it coral pink.
* AmbiguouslyBi: While it's clear that Chelsea has feelings for Tatsumi, she does have a fair amount of subtext pertaining to Akame. Most, if not all, of Chelsea's interactions with Akame can be interpreted as flirting. Several interactions with Mine and Kurome are suspect as well.
** ''Zero'' reveals that Chelsea identifies herself as a heterosexual, and is often creeped out by her PsychoLesbian teammates tendency to flirt with her when she was with the Oarburgh clan. That said, many of the female assassins in the Oarburgh clan pride themselves on being a ClosetKey, and it's implied in Chapter 29 that they forced Chelsea to sleep with them to "show her the benefits of being in a relationship with another girl". In Chapter 36, after getting a glance at Akame, Chelsea admits that she thought Akame was cute and wanted to get a closer look. Comically after realizing her thought process about Akame, Chelsea blamed her teammates for "twisting her morals", and notes she has been spending too much time with them. This apparently confirms that Chelsea is indeed bisexual, but [[{{Gayngst}} isn't too happy about it]].
* AntiHero: Even more so than the other Night Raid members. While Chelsea is a far cry from a TokenEvilTeammate (she's revealed to be a caring person), she tends to value self-preservation over saving innocent lives. The biggest example is when Danger Beasts attacked the Empire. Most of the Night Raid members wanted to fight them, yet Chelsea insisted on letting the Jaegers take care of the Danger Beasts, rather than risk being sighted by the Jaegers or other possible opponents. [[spoiler: She ends up being right. Not only did Tatsumi run into Esdeath, but he was also spotted by Syura. As a result, this allowed Syura to identify Tatsumi later on in the story, leading to Tatsumi and Lubbock's capture.]]
* AscendedExtra: In the series proper, she has a minor role [[spoiler:since she gets killed shortly after joining Night Raid]]. However, she plays a larger role in "Zero", where she's given a larger amount of screen time.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: During her BathtubScene, when she was featured completely naked.
* BathingBeauty: She seems to have a fondness for bathing. Has a fairly memorable BathtubScene in episode 12. and in ''Zero'', Chelsea was excited to use the hot springs at the inn that her team was staying at.
* BoringButPractical: She assassinates a target by striking an artery in the neck. This is in contrast to the flashier kills made by other characters, who tend to sever limbs, heads, and torsos.
* BrutalHonesty: In episode 12, she states Night Raid, while having semi-competent members, lacks good cohesion and will likely fail a mission. [[spoiler:She said it mostly because the last group she was with ended up dying, and didn't want them to get killed too]].
* TheBusCameBack: Pulled a DeusExitMachina in ''Zero'' but returns two story arcs later, now on a new assassination team.
* ButNotTooBi: Chelsea has noted that she prefers men over women. Chelsea, who identifies herself as a heterosexual at the time, [[{{Gayngst}} didn't seem all too happy when she finds herself thinking about Akame's cuteness after seeing her for the first time]], considering her thoughts on the matter to be "poisonous" and blaming her PsychoLesbian teammates for "twisting her morals". In the main series, Chelsea was attracted to both Akame and Tatsumi, and even openly flirts with Akame. However, her attraction to Akame was never made clear until ''Zero'', and its pretty obvious that she was developing more of an attraction toward Tatsumi.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: She usually mocks this kind of mindset, but after meeting Tatsumi she begins taking a more active role in missions, even endangering herself at times.
* CripplingOverspecialization: While her skills of deception and instakill are impressive, they don't have much use in a direct battle. As a result, Chelsea doesn't have a [[NecessaryDrawback means of fighting]], which proves to be a fatal flaw. This is lampshaded by Mine. To be fair, Chelsea, who had been an assassin longer than most of Night Raid, claimed that she never really needed the drawback, and was [[spoiler:killed]] by an opponent that was [[PlotTailoredToTheParty specifically tailored to counteract her abilities]].
* CruelToBeKind: Chelsea seems to insult both Sheele and Bulat in episode 12, which sets off Mine and Tatsumi. [[spoiler:However, she later tells him that the last group she was with died except for her, and was hoping their unit cohesion was strong enough to ensure survival]].
* CrushBlush: Chelsea tends to blush a lot whenever she's with Tatsumi.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Pinkish-Red/Orange-Red hair and eyes.
* DeadGuyOnDisplay: [[spoiler:After getting her head cut off by Kurome's puppet Natala, Chelsea's head was mounted on a pike and placed in the middle of the town square. According to Seryu, it's still there by the time of Mine and Seryu's rematch.]]
* DeathByIrony:
** [[spoiler:For someone who spent a lot of time criticizing the other Night Raid members for needlessly endangering themselves and trying to prevent them from developing ChronicHeroSyndrome, she ended up developing said syndrome, and is killed after making the very risky move to kill Kurome without back-up]].
** Chelsea's first kill was beheading an evil viceroy in a hydrangea field. [[spoiler:She later suffers the exact same fate as her first victim]].
** ''Zero'' adds an extra layer of irony when it's revealed that Chelsea briefly met her [[spoiler:would-be killer, Kurome]], while disguised as [[spoiler:Natala, Kurome's future puppet that she would use to kill Chelsea]].
* DeusExitMachina: In Zero, [[spoiler:she ends up being captured by Gai's debt collector when impersonating him before she can help Taeko kill off the rest of The Elite Seven. This prevents her from possibly killing or being killed by any of The Elite Seven]]. After [[TheBusCameBack returning]] two arcs later, Chelsea [[spoiler:conveniently leaves to go on another mission just before her second team was wiped out by the Four Rakshasa Demons and the remaining members of the Elite Seven]].
* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnFemale: On the receiving end of this in ''Zero''. It's heavily implied in Chapter 29 that Chelsea's teammate Cassandra forced Chelsea to "have relations", despite Chelsea clearly objecting to Cassandra's advances, which Cassandra calls an attempt to get her to "wake up to the truth". Chelsea's distress was clear, yet the scene was played for fan service instead of drama, and Chelsea never seems to hold it against Cassandra afterwards. Granted, it was never made clear how far they got, as the Oarburgh clan were called into action not long after this scene occurred, at which point Cassandra had just apparently removed Chelsea's top and begging fondling her.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When she's properly introduced in episode 12, she plays with Akame's hair, then offers her a lollipop. She also starts off on the wrong foot with Mine, insulting the latter's [[ACupAngst small chest size.]] Later a cat shows up, causing Mine to experience CutenessProximity and give her cake to the cat. Said cat actually turns out to be Chelsea demonstrating her deception abilities. She also tricks Tatsumi when he attempted to prank her in the bath.
* FaceDeathWithDespair: [[spoiler:Especially when you compare Chelsea's death to the deaths of all the other members of Night Raid. In both the anime and manga, all other members either died because of a HeroicSacrifice or [[GoOutWithASmile went out with a smile]]. Chelsea, on the other hand, died crying and the expression on her face showed that she was terrified. What happened to her body afterwards only made things worse]].
* FlowerMotifs: Hydrangea. They're seen in her backstory when she completed her first assassination [[spoiler:and when she's killed by Kurome's puppets]].
* {{Foil}}:
** To Akame. Both have been assassins longer than anyone else in Night Raid. Both specialize in {{one hit kill}}s. Also, their appearances are somewhat similar. Chelsea's outfit consists mostly of black with red and white highlights, while Akame wears a black mini dress with red highlights in the main series, and a white mini dress with red highlights in Zero. It's also worth noting that (while it was never pointed out in the series) Chelsea is the only other character besides Akame to have red eyes, (at least before Tatsumi [[spoiler: fused with Incursio]] and didn't have [[BlackEyesOfCrazy black sclera]], like Ogre and Izou). Their differences come from personalities and fighting styles. Akame is TheStoic, with very little social skills, that kills opponents through combat. Chelsea is emotive, and must rely on deceptions and her social skills to kill her opponent since she lacks any combat skills.
** She also serves as one for Mine, both being {{jerk|WithAHeartOfGold}}s that often make fun of their less experienced teammates, and eventually fall in love with Tatsumi. However, while Mine [[spoiler:eventually formed a relationship with Tatsumi, Chelsea was killed before she got the chance to admit her feelings]].
* TheGadfly: In her free time, she [[ItAmusedMe enjoys getting a rise out of her teammates]] and especially likes pushing Mine's buttons, such as [[ACupAngst mocking her chest size]], and tricking her with her transformations.
* {{Gayngst}}: Both downplayed and played for laughs. In Chapter 36 of ''Zero'', when discussing with Merraid on what she plans on doing to the captured Akame, Merraid desires to convince Akame to leave the Empire, which makes Chelsea wonder why Merraid is so fixated on Akame. Chelsea thinks about how cute Akame is, and wanted to get a closer look at her. Chelsea then becomes frustrated with herself when she realizes that she finds Akame attractive, and decides to spend more time away from [[LipstickLesbian Merraid and the rest of her team]]. Merraid misinterprets Chelsea's frustration as a sign of being jealous of her focus on Akame.
* GlassCannon: Chelsea's way of killing is an instakill, as she always stabs a vital point of her target. However, if her strategy fails, she's left vulnerable to attack. [[spoiler: That's exactly what happens to her when she failed to kill Kurome.]]
* GuileHeroine: Since she's not a strong combatant, she has to rely on disguises to get close enough to her target to kill them.
* HeadphonesEqualIsolation: While not as bad as most examples, Chelsea does prefer to do her missions alone and seems to be the most distant member of Night Raid. [[spoiler: Part of her motivation for wanting to be the one to kill Bols and Kurome was so the other members would accept her more.]]
* HeroAntagonist: To Akame's and Kurome's VillainProtagonist in ''Zero''.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: She was an assassin for as long as Akame, and a part of a different branch of Night Raid. Her start up is actually explored a bit in Zero.
* HiddenDepths: Her first kill was a viceroy who stripped his own civilians naked and killed them for sport. When she saw how it affected her fellow citizens, she sought to make the world a better place by becoming an assassin. However, somewhere along the line, she realized that being an assassin isn't nearly as romanticized as she thought. While she maintains her PayEvilUntoEvil mindset, by the time she kills [[spoiler:a NiceGuy like Bols]], she admits that it's not something she enjoys doing anymore.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: In ''Zero'', Chelsea has stated that she prefers men over women, but develops an attraction towards Akame after see her for the first time, although [[{{Gayngst}} she wasn't too happy about it at first]]. By the time of the main series, Chelsea openly flirts with Akame.
* InHarmsWay: She initially criticizes individuals who would risk their lives doing the right thing and wouldn't endanger herself unless the risk was minimal. She gradually begins to adopt Tatsumi's more bold tendencies. [[spoiler: This leads to her death at Kurome's hands.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Chelsea tends to act like a jerk towards her teammates due to her status as TheGadfly, her brutally honest critiques of the others, and her ideals of self-preservation. However, she truly cares about her comrades and her harsh tendencies are just her way of trying to give her teammates advice on how to prevent causalities. Also, while Chelsea encourages her teammates to be merciless towards their opponents, in reality, Chelsea actually feels bad about the {{anti villain}}s that she's forced to face.
* LoveEpiphany: Much like Esdeath, Tatsumi's resolve and smile causes her to look at him in a different light in episode 15 after he says he has no problem fighting against the Jaegers, despite having gotten to know some of them.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: Near the end of the Jaeger Arc, Chelsea began making risky decisions, which were noted by other Night Raid members and Chelsea herself to be out of character. Chelsea believed this was because of her feelings for Tatsumi, and the reason she was making such brash decisions was because she wanted Tatsumi to acknowledge her. [[spoiler:However, her impulsive decisions end up spelling her death]].
* MsFanservice: Not to the same extent as Esdeath, Leone, or Akame, but Chelsea's had her fair share of fanservice moments. This includes a swimsuit scene with Leone, and a BathtubScene where she was featured both completely naked and with only a ModestyTowel.
** Trying to capitalize on Chelsea's popularity, many official promotional artworks released after the end of the series have Chelsea showing off her "assets". Case in point, it really says a lot in this [[https://78.media.tumblr.com/39b929c4d90dc62e281d5251b4ff74e9/tumblr_p1ktc0ZHMS1rd83duo3_400.jpg artwork]] where Chelsea is wearing a skimpier outfit than '''LEONE'''!
* NinjaMaid: In ''Zero'', Chelsea had to serve as a maid for Merraid Oarburgh.
* NonActionSnarker: She's the only member of Night Raid who's not a direct physical combatant. Her Teigu is more suited for stealth operations. She's also incredibly sarcastic and loves needling Tatsumi and Mine.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: She starts running her fingers through Akame's hair seconds after meeting her. She later displays a similar lack of regard for personal space to Kurome, in an attempt to kill her.
** After being put on a new team in "Zero", Chelsea ends up on the receiving end of this from her PsychoLesbian teammates. It is later implied that she picked up this habit from them.
* OffWithHerHead: [[spoiler:She gets decapitated, courtesy of Kurome.]]
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: In ''Zero'', it's revealed that Chelsea had been a long time adversary to the assassination teams that Akame and Kurome were on for years. Ironically, the sisters don't properly meet Chelsea until the main series. The three do briefly meet each other when Chelsea was disguised as Natala in Chapter 36, but were unaware that the ''Natala'' they were seeing was an impostor.
* OneHitKill: Chelsea kills her opponents with a single strike from a needle.
* OralFixation: Always seen with a lollipop in her mouth.
* RedOniBlueOni: Out of the two newcomers, Chelsea is the red oni to Susanoo's blue. She's even ColourCodedForYourConvenience.
* {{Revenge}}: She kills [[spoiler:Bols]], who was the agent of the Empire that wiped out her town. Nevertheless, she admits she found it painful to do so.
* SavedByCanon: Her appearance in the main series ensures that she will survive the events of Zero.
* ShipTease: She is the first girl in the Night Raid to begin to have romantic feelings for Tatsumi, moved by his kindness that isn't tainted by his determination to kill if needed. [[spoiler:Nothing comes of it as she dies before she can tell him about how she feels]].
* SitcomArchNemesis: She loves to drive Mine crazy with her teasing and trickery. [[spoiler:In the end, Mine did seem to think of Chelsea as a comrade since she killed Seryu to avenge her along Sheele.]]
* SmitingEvilFeelsGood: She found a purpose in eliminating evil from the world, but understands that this also makes her a murderer.
* SoleSurvivor:
** Of the other Night Raid assassination team that was annihilated by the Three Beasts.
** In Zero, [[spoiler:she's the lone survivor of not just one, but ''two'' Oarburgh clan teams that were sent to kill Akame's group, The Elite Seven.]]
* SweetTooth: She keeps a constant stock of lollipops, and later swipes cake from Mine.
* TastesLikeFriendship: After meeting her, Chelsea wins Akame over by giving her candy.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Unlike [[GoOutWithASmile Sheele]] and [[ObiWanMoment Bulat]], her [[RasputinianDeath death]] wasn't slow or peaceful. Once Kurome realizes that Chelsea [[spoiler:killed Bols, she ''utterly annihilates'' Chelsea for it. [[{{Fingore}} All of her fingers on her left hand get shot off]], [[AnArmAndALeg her right arm gets lopped off]], [[InTheBack she gets shot in the torso]], and [[OffWithHerHead is finally decapitated]]. Her head is then mounted on a pike, while the rest of her body was dissected by Esdeath for information. Then Seryu fed the remains to Coro.]] To be fair, Chelsea did manage to leave a potentially fatal GameBreakingInjury on Kurome, who hasn't been the same fighter ever since.
* TooCleverByHalf: Chelsea bites off more than she can chew by [[spoiler:trying to kill off multiple Jaegers in quick succession. Admittedly, her plan would have succeeded had Kurome not been resistant to her poison.]]
* {{Tritagonist}}: She can arguably be considered one in ''Zero'' to Akame's VillainProtagonist and Kurome's status as a {{Deuteragonist}}. Whenever a chapter focuses on an assassination team that opposes the Empire, if Chelsea is on that team, the chapter will be told from her point of view.
* UndignifiedDeath: Unlike the other members of Night Raid, [[spoiler:who all got to GoOutWithASmile or have a DyingMomentOfAwesome]], Chelsea [[spoiler:died trying to flee from her opponent, having her fingers shot off her left hand, her right arm sliced off, shot again in the torso, having her head cut off and put on display, while the rest of her body was dissected for information by Esdeath, and finally had her remains (save her head) fed to Coro]]. To top it off, [[spoiler:her final moments]] heavily implied that she was planning on confessing her feelings to Tatsumi when the mission was over.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: [[spoiler:The reason Wild Hunt took interest in Bols's wife was because they heard that a beautiful widow was visiting the grave of her husband periodically. If Chelsea hadn't killed Bols, his wife and daughter wouldn't have any grave to visit, and would likely be alive.]]
* UtilityPartyMember: In contrast to every other Night Raid member, Chelsea isn't a combatant. Her Teigu, Gaea Foundation, heavily favors stealth and recon missions. Because of this, she leaves the actual fighting to the others. [[spoiler:It's what makes her death at Kurome's hands so tragic.]]
* WeakButSkilled: She's not as good in combat as the other women of Night Raid, but is capable of deception and [[PressurePoint striking vital points]]. [[spoiler:Too bad Kurome wasn't fooled.]]
* WeHardlyKnewYe: [[spoiler:She's killed 6 episodes after her introduction.]]
* TheWorldsExpertOnGettingKilled: Chelsea's a veteran assassin on equal footing with Akame in terms of experience and kills. In addition, she was built up as one of the most savvy characters in the series. Despite this, she's [[spoiler:killed off on her first major mission with Night Raid.]] In her defense, she was [[spoiler:killed]] due to a combination of unforeseeable factors and a case of LoveMakesYouDumb.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Most of her usual smarts are thrown out the window because of LoveMakesYouDumb. As a result, Chelsea's actions become bolder and more life-threatening. This is lampshaded by Chelsea herself.

!!!Teigu: Gaea Foundation

* {{Animorphism}}: Gaea Foundation allows Chelsea to transform into animals, as seen when she turns into a cat a couple of times.
* RedBaron: Phantasmagoria: Gaea Foundation.
* StoryBreakerPower: From what was shown, the only real limit on Gaea Foundation's shapeshifting is that she can't use PowerCopying to obtain her shapeshifted form's abilities. As far as appearances go, however, the Tengu doesn't seem to have any limit in what she can turn into. [[spoiler:This is most likely one of the reasons Chelsea was killed off shortly after her introduction.]] Also, her stealth/infiltration abilities would have made things a lot easier for Night Raid in later arcs, where stealth and disguises were key in their missions, and many confrontations could have been avoided [[spoiler:had she survived]].
* TransformationTrinket: In the form of a makeup box.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: She can take on the form of anything.
