A young, poor, urban sorcerer of London studying under the powerful Robert Bakker, he is murdered in a phone booth by a mysterious shadow. Two years later, Matthew wakes up in a house he used to own, with eyes the wrong color, pronoun issues, and unknown forces attempting to hunt him down.

9	By the end of the first book he has come to terms with the fact that [[spoiler: he is now the fusion of himself and the electric blue angels, immortal creatures born of the life humans pour down the telephone lines. He later gains the title of the Midnight Mayor.]]
