The Lord of Time and Space who has called forth the Diary Holders to participate in a battle royale. He wishes to pass on his power to the winner of the contest.
----
* AkashicRecords: He has it as he planned to send Akise back since he served his purpose.
* AllPowerfulBystander: Despite being a literal [[PhysicalGod divine level]] RealityWarper [[DimensionLord who controls everything about his dimension]], he does not directly interfere with the games for two reasons, 1) it's against the rules he's set up only interfering when knowing someone is bypassing the rules and 2) he's slowly decaying.
* BequeathedPower: Transfers half of his power to Minene.
* BigBad: Seems to be this for much of the series, since he is the organizer of the DeadlyGame. [[DiscOneFinalBoss However]], Mur Mur is the one really in control.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Honors and expects fair play within the games he supervises, but sees nothing morally wrong with conducting the survival game despite all the casualties it causes. He also likes to start wars for fun.
* {{Catchphrase}}: In the English Dub, Deus is fond of the phrase, "wheels within wheels" to describe his machinations.
* ColdHam: Similarly to [[VideoGame/KingdomHeartsII Xemnas,]] this is what you get when you combine the ham machine that is Norio Wakamoto with a rather emotionless character.
* CosmicKeystone: Without him, the universe collapses become worse.
* DeityOfHumanOrigin: According to the [[AllThereInTheManual companion book]] ''Future Diary Fragments, '' Sakae Esuno likes to imagine that Deus was originally human.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: Though he initially seemed to be the main villain, it turns out that his servant Mur Mur had her own plans.
* DivineIntervention: Deus saves Minene and gives her half of his power so she can stop Mur Mur and Yuno.
* EnigmaticEmpoweringEntity: He gave the 12 holders their diary powers as well as giving Minene half of his powers and a new arm.
* GodIsDead: He dies near the end of the series sooner than expected since he gave Minene some of his power.
* GodIsFlawed: He leans a bit closer to this in that he wants the survival game to play out fairly between the players and without outside intervention from himself or Mur Mur, and honestly can't see the problem in it so long as he's kept entertained and his successor is chosen. He is also very willing to cancel the whole game entirely when John Bacchus decides to stop the Future Diary Project from developing further in the 3rd-world.
* GodzillaThreshold:
** Upon learning that Mur Mur purposely had the Fourth eliminated much earlier than planned, he becomes more cautious of her, and responds by placing the Observer [[note]]Akise[[/note]] on a more active role in the game.
** Later, when it becomes glaringly obvious to Deus that Mur Mur is seen manipulating the game to go in Second's favor, it grows to the point that he had to rescue Minene from death and bestow her with half of his power to keep the game on track.
* GracefulLoser: When Akise is able to prove his autonomy, Deus concedes that he is able to take his own actions and allows him back into the human world, able to change the game free of Deus' influence.
* ImageSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPVZgdxFxAo EGOIST]]".
* ItAmusedMe: Another part of his reason for creating the game.
* JerkassGods: He sits back and lets the players kill each other, only interfering due to players not playing by the rules. He doesn't care about how the battle game will emotionally scar the Diary users. He then deconstructs every choice of free will that Akise ever did, even his love for Yuki, that being all programmed.
* KickTheDog: When he tells the truth to Akise about being an ArtificialHuman, Akise declares that his love for Yukiteru is genuine. Deus, who is nearly finished in returning Akise to the AkashicRecords, tells Akise that those feelings were also programmed into him. Given that Akise is very serious about his love for Yukiteru, it's a low blow, even if it ended up being true.
* KingOfAllCosmos: Not as completely immortal as most.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPVZgdxFxAo EGOIST]], performed by Music/YouseiTeikoku. In an unusual example, it doesn't ever play in the anime, and is only on the soundtrack.
* MeaningfulName: Apart from being a god of causality, Deus is often manipulating reality from his throne contraption, a literal "god in the machine".
* MetaphoricallyTrue: When Yukiteru asks him to revive Rea, Deus replies that it's impossible. When questioned why that is so, he states that he's dying and losing his power. While he doesn't outright lie, the way he phrases his reply makes it look like it's only impossible for him in particular and that the new god will be able to revive Rea; he doesn't mention that even a god would only be able to revive the body but not the soul. As his later conversation with Akise shows, it's not that Deus himself isn't aware of this.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: His design looks like something out of Creator/BrianFroud's imagination than an anime character.
* NotSoImaginaryFriend: Yuki at first believes Deus to be his ImaginaryFriend. Turns out he isn't.
* TheOmniscient: While he is God, the [[ScryVsScry unstable nature]] of the Survival Game means he cannot keep track of everything. So he uses an ArtificialHuman which he calls The Observer to record the events of the game, to check on the participants and investigate any irregularities which may endanger the game.
** For example when he noticed that the Tenth has hidden himself from the game, the Observer was sent to check on him.
** Another is when Second digs a big pit and has buried something in her home. The Observer was sent to investigate what she was trying to hide. Later revealed to be three corpses, two were Second's parents and the third is later revealed to be the Second belonging to this timeline. Deus deduces from this the nature of the Second, and plans accordingly.
* PalsWithJesus: Pretty much everyone who is able to visit the Hall of Causality is this to him since he's a pretty chill God. Special mention goes to Yukiteru though, whom Deus clearly favors over everyone else. Another is with Bacchus as the two of them together founded the Survival Game.
* RulesLawyer: He puts a large emphasis on the rules. He found Tenth's avoidance to be a deviance from the game, so he planned accordingly, as well as planning against Mur Mur once it's clear that she favors Yuno.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: In the English dub.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: By the time of the game, he was dying, so he wants the game to be completed as soon as possible.

Deus Ex Machina's servant, who takes the form of a dark-skinned little girl. She is not as loyal to him as anyone was led to believe.
----
* AffablyEvil: [[TheGadfly Innocently messes around with each of the diary users]], despite being a traitor to God and a follower of a crazed {{Yandere}}.
* AllergicToRoutine: She convinced Yuno to travel back in time so she could watch the survival game all over again, but she easily gets bored when things happen the same way as before. This is why she intervenes in the game and alters the course of events, such as when she gets Kurusu to betray Yuki and Yuno early.
%%* AmbiguouslyBrown
* ArchEnemy:
** To Akise, whose she's more dickish to and Akise being one of the few people who knows her true nature, especially in ''Paradox''.
** She also becomes one to Minene in the final battle, with them duking it out while Yuki and Yuno have their own conflict.
* TheAtoner: In the ''Redial'' OVA, the 1st-world Mur Mur is trapped by the 3rd-world's incarnation with the first Yuno's memories. Through this she realizes the enormity of pain she had caused and contacts Yuno via a keychain replica of herself to give her a proper happy ending.
* BastardUnderstudy: Subverted in the end. It turns out she was loyal to Yuno, most likely because she became god in the 1st-world.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She sets herself off up as a CloudCuckooLander as well as a BrattyHalfPint, in reality, she's far more manipulative and malevolent.
%%* BlushSticker
* BunnyEarsLawyer: She's a silly character for the most part (despite the occasional slip up, like the incident that sets up the storyline for ''Paradox''), but she knows how to do her job. And she is '''a lot''' more competent and devious than she first appears.
* CastingAShadow: She can fight by conjuring shadows and making them into different forms.
* TheChessmaster: She is ''a lot more'' competent and cunning than it seems at first sight. She have been scheming in the Survival Game to ensure Yuno wins the game and goes back in time to do it over again infinitely. This included handing to Yuno a second diary, earlier death the Fourth, telling Yukiteru that his mother can be returned to life if he becomes a god, waiting for Deus death and taking for herself his powers in order to declare Yuno the winner in the Survival Game after the way she kills Yukiteru and finally return to the past to repeat it again.
* ClippedWingAngel: Even after taking her OneWingedAngel form, its implied that it exhausted a lot of her strength, since she was easily taken down by her other still restrained self.
* TheCorrupter: For the Diary Holders, as she is more direct in turning them all into a BigBadEnsemble in an EvilVersusEvil war.
* TheDogWasTheMastermind: The true villain, whom Deus Ex Machina himself were nothing more than pawns to, is... the [[CuteIsEvil cute little]] PluckyComicRelief girl who barely showed up in the main story at first, only appearing in {{Omake}}s and side material.
* TheDragon: To Deus Ex Machina. Also, towards the end, she fights off the [[EmpoweredBadassNormal empowered Minene]] while Yuno arranges her life in the 3rd-world.
* DragonInChief: Deus Ex Machina may be the organizer of the game, and Yuno might be the goddess in the 1st-world who arranged this whole mess, but Mur Mur is more competent concerning knowledge of space and time, schemes behind Deus's back, and is the one who gives advice to Yuno on how to continue the Survival Game. Also unlike Yuno, she has the ability to travel through time, and it is thanks to Mur Mur that Yuno was able to get into the 3rd-world. She also is much stronger than Yuno in the battle, and certainly has no doubts about continuation of the Survival Game. Throughout the whole series, she has tried to ensure Yuno's victory while Yuno herself didn't want to win the Survival Game again (before Yukiteru refuses to kill her). And also take into account that if it were not for Mur Mur, then Minene would have had no trouble killing Yuno when she had the chance.
* EnigmaticMinion: Towards the middle of the story, Mur Mur starts hinting that she knows more than she lets on, perhaps more than Deus, and manipulates the game accordingly. Her true purpose isn't revealed until the full story about Yuno being Mur Mur's real god comes to light.
* FusionDance: 1st-world Mur Mur did this and absorbed Yuno's corpse, inheriting her memories in the process.
* GameFace: Her OneWingedAngel form in spades.
%%* GirlishPigtails
* GratuitousGerman: She uses German phrases a few times in some of the omakes. This was omitted in the dub.
* HeelFaceTurn: 1st-world Mur Mur has one in ''Redial'', where she becomes TheAtoner.
* HeroAntagonist: 3rd-world Mur Mur from the ''Redial'' OVA. She's simply trying to fulfill her duty as a loyal servant of Deus and 1st-world Mur Mur is a threat.
* HumongousMecha: Created one of these to fight Minene in the ''Redial'' OVA.
* ImageSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zadFKAx58EY UBIQUITOUS]]".
* ItAmusedMe: Her main motivation for repetition of the Survival Game, not counting her devotion to Yuno. In fact, it may be even more than her devotion to Yuno considering the fact she shows Yukiteru the past events of the 1st-world to "make the game more interesting" despite the fact that Yuno ''didn't'' want Yukiteru to witness this.
* {{Jerkass}}: Mainly toward Akise. Otherwise, she mostly enjoys [[TheGadfly screwing around with everyone else]].
* JustBetweenYouAndMe: Shows Yukiteru the past events of the 1st-world right after Yuno starts to attack him to "make the game more interesting". Since she was working under Yuno, she was probably expecting him to die right after showing him the past world. And she would've been right had it not been for Minene's interference.
* LaughablyEvil: She is quite the malevolent schemer and much of the show's comedy comes from her.
* LittleMissAlmighty: Looks and acts like a little girl, with all the power of a trickster deity.
* ManipulativeBitch: She manipulated the Fourth, telling him ahead of time about his son's illness in order to speed up the game. And also manipulated Yukiteru, telling him that his mother can be returned to life if he becomes a god in order to motivate him to take a greater part in the game and off the remaining contestants.
* MeaningfulName: Her name can be read as the Hebrew word for both "Whisper" and "Frustration", both of which hint at her true nature.
* MsExposition: In the dub, this is lampshaded in the second episode's omake.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: She gives one to Minene in her unrestrained form.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Especially when her shackles are taken off.
* NotSoImaginaryFriend: To Yuki, just like Deus.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: She sets herself off up as a CloudCuckooLander as well as a BrattyHalfPint, when in reality, she's ''far more'' clever than it seems at first glance.
* OneWingedAngel: The form she takes after destroying her bracelets, a gray skinned, deranged version of herself with RedEyesTakeWarning.
* PerkyFemaleMinion: To the God of Space and Time, whomever it may be.
* PhysicalGod: She takes over after Deus dies.
* Really700YearsOld: Her true age is unknown, but she lived for 10,000 years in the void with Yuki. She is quite possibly much older than that, but she still has childlike features.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Named for the [[Literature/ArsGoetia Goetic demon]] Mur Mur. She also carries a small trumpet on her hip to reinforce the namesake. She eventually wears a crown just like the Mur Mur from myth is said to wear after Deus' death.
* RestrainingBolt: The bracelets she wears keep her from acting against Deus's will, or so he thought. In Chapter 57, she takes them off. She was indeed serving God's will, but that God was not Deus.
* ShipperOnDeck: Kind of. In the ''Redial'' OVA, her actions reunited Yuki and Yuno, showing that, to some degree, she does approve of their relationship, though she might not have really cared before.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Although both fan translations of the Manga and the official Tokyopop release spelled her name "[=MuruMuru=]", the opening to the anime displays her name as "[=MurMur=]".
* TheStarscream: To Deus. She seems to be his faithful servant when in fact she a waits until he dies and she will can take his authority to proclaim Yuno the winner in the Survival Game.
* VerbalTic: Ends every sentence with "-noja", the equivalent of the standard Japanese explanatory expression "-noda" in some Western Japanese dialects[[labelnote:*]]namely, the ones spoken in Okayama, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures, according to the [[http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC%E8%AA%9E%E3%81%AE%E6%96%B9%E8%A8%80%E3%81%AE%E6%AF%94%E8%BC%83%E8%A1%A8#.E8.BF.91.E7.95.BF.E3.81.8B.E3.82.89.E4.B8.AD.E5.9B.BD.E3.81.AB.E3.81.8B.E3.81.91.E3.81.A6.EF.BC.88.E5.B1.B1.E9.99.BD.E9.81.93.EF.BC.89 Japanese]] [[Website/{{Wikipedia}} Other Wiki]].[[/labelnote]].

[[folder:Aru Akise]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akise_aru_mn_1774.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AkiraIshida (JP), Creator/ToddHaberkorn (EN)

Yuki's classmate who develops a peculiar interest in him. He desires to be a great detective, and dives head-first into the mysteries surrounding the Diary Holders. He later gets from Eighth's Diary the "Detective Diary" which predicts other diary owners' actions regardless of how they change the future. In ''Paradox'', however, he borrows Yukiteru's "Indiscriminate Diary".
----
* AdaptationalHeroism: The anime excises [[spoiler: him willingly setting Yuki's friends up to potentially die and not intervening to save them.]]
** Similarly, in the ''Redial'' manga he fights against Yuno in earnest before accepting that he can't stop her, whereas in the OVA it's all a SecretTestOfCharacter to see just how far Yuno is willing to go for Yuki.
* AlliterativeName: '''A'''ru '''A'''kise.
* AllLovingHero: In ''Paradox''. He does all in his power to prevent the many casualties that Yuno originally caused in the main series. This includes not involving anyone during Ninth's hostage situation and battling her on his own (albeit [[ButtMonkey using Mur Mur as a fake hostage]] as well), figuring out what the cult was planning to do to Sixth and save her, prevent Fifth from becoming murderous by saving his parents and making Twelfth realize that his view of the world is wrong and he can still redeem himself by saving another. He even gets to befriend Seventh and Eighth in said situation. Naturally, the only person who does not like this attitude one bit is Mur Mur.
** Also in the main series, but by proxy. [[PassingTheTorch His dying message gives Yukiteru awareness of the]] AlternateTimeline, prompting Yukiteru to improve the lives of all the participants upon arrival in the 3rd-world.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: In ''Paradox'', in regards to Yuki and Tsubaki.
* AmateurSleuth: Aspiring to become a GreatDetective.
* AmbiguouslyBi: If ''Paradox'' is ''anything'' to go off of. He insists very clearly he is not gay, and seems to have a weird fondness for Tsubaki Kasugano, despite the undeniable HomoeroticSubtext with Yukiteru.
* AngelUnaware: He's later revealed to be the Observer, an ArtificialHuman specifically created by Deus to monitor the game from within.
* ArtificialHuman: He's really the Observer created by Deus to monitor the game to prevent cheating.
* BackFromTheDead: ''Redial'' implies that 3rd-world Akise is 2nd-world Akise.
%%* BadassAdorable
* BadassNormal: He doesn't have a Future Diary, but he can still go toe-to-toe with Diary Holders.
* BarehandedBladeBlock: In the manga during Yukiteru's and Yuno's last fight with Eleventh, he saves Eighth from Yuno by grabbing the blade of Yuno's sword when she's attacking her.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Akise rarely gets pissed off even when Yuno tries to kill him multiple times. The only time he lost it was when he spared Yuno and she responds by calling Yuki and lying to him and manipulates him to kill his friends.
* BishieSparkle: In ''Paradox'', especially in Chapter 3.
* BodyguardCrush: On Yuki.
* BreakTheCutie: His confrontation with Deus. It's a real shocker to find out that you're not even human and then denied the things that made you you. The pride in his detective skills as well as his love for Yuki were denied by God himself. Fortunately, he breaks out of this quickly.
* TheComicallySerious
* CrazyJealousGuy: Towards Yuki, but only when Yuno is involved and rather subtle compared to how Yuno is a ClingyJealousGirl for Yuki until the final confrontation.
* CrazyPrepared: Near the beginning of his final fight with Yuno.
* DeclarationOfProtection: To Yuki.
* {{Determinator}}: Not even '''being completely beheaded''' stops him from giving Yukiteru a final warning about Yuno.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Yuno having two Diaries. Of course no one besides Mur Mur or Yuno would have seen it coming.
* DissonantSerenity
* DramaticIrony: He spends most of his run outsmarting diary holders with just his wits. When he gets his own diary Yuno outsmarts him and his diary with a clever BatmanGambit.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: After he's revealed to be an ArtificialHuman created by Deus to observe the game, he receives the most powerful future diary of all through the Eighth's server system and uses it to become a terrifying opponent for even ''Yuno''.
* ExplainingYourPowerToTheEnemy: Reveals that he has a Child Diary at the very beginning of his final confrontation with Yuno, and soon after that explains what its power is as well. This makes it possible for Yuno to find a way to use that information against Akise himself, thus contributing to his ultimate defeat and death.
* {{Expy}}: His similarities to Kaworu of ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' go way past the point of being unintentional. Like Kaworu, he's a [[MysticalWhiteHair white-haired]] guy voiced by Creator/AkiraIshida who seems to be in love with the meek main character, and turns out to be an "angel" and later dies of decapitation.
* FirstLawOfResurrection: Despite the fact that the survival game never started in the 3rd-world and thus Deus didn't need an observer to keep up with it, Akise is shown to be alive and well in the 3rd-world in one of the closing panels of Chapter 59. The manga doesn't give any explanation for his recreation. In the anime, 3rd-world Deus is shown using Akise to gather information about the impact Yukiteru, Yuno, and Minene made on the 3rd-world, so he presumably recreated Akise for that purpose.
* {{Foil}}: Is this to Yuno like Minene is for Yukiteru, but in reverse: he starts out as the clear-cut GoodCounterpart to Yuno, but by the end the lines have been blurred, particularly in the manga.
* ForcefulKiss: Steals a kiss from Yukiteru ''[[BullyingADragon right in front of Yuno]]''.
* GreatDetective: In the ''Redial'' manga he goes on to become a world famous detective.
* GuileHero: Relies on his own wits to trick his enemies rather than the ScryVsScry of the other Diary users.
* HeroAntagonist: In contrast to Yuno's VillainProtagonist.
* HeroicResolve: Even though he was deleted and Deus proved that everything he did was planned out as God's will, he decides to forge his own future from that point on, creates his own future diary with Eighth's server system, and [[DeclarationOfProtection swears to protect Yukiteru]].
* HeroicRROD: When he confronts Deus on his own and finds out that he's an ArtificialHuman, he tries to prove that everything he had done up to that point wasn't programmed into him, but with each of Deus' rejections, his body decayed more and more as it was returned into Deus's AkashicRecords. When he finally tried declare that his love for Yukiteru was real, Deus rejected that as well, and said it was also something that he willed to happen as {{God}}.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Towards Yuki, and toward others in ''Paradox'' and ''Redial''.
* HopelessSuitor: He is in love with Yuki and even tries to pursue him, but it's quite clear that Yuki is more interested in Yuno.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: During his last meeting with Yukiteru in the manga, he claims that not stopping him from killing Mao and Kosaka was necessary, because it meant that the future predicted by his diary wouldn't change and that he would manage to kill Yuno. It's never made clear whether the readers are supposed to agree with Akise that letting Mao and Kosaka die was really necessary.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Akise claims that he's not into boys. However, he says that he just loves Yuki.
* IGaveMyWord: Akise is one of the few characters that constantly tells the truth to Yuki and never breaks his promise to him. But it was almost certainly averted with his promise to Kamado that he wouldn't hand her over to Yukiteru in exchange for giving him a Child Diary. When Yukiteru found him after killing Mao and Kosaka, Akise was guarding the unconscious Kamado. As she was awake and running away from Yukiteru while his friends were stopping him just in the previous chapter, Akise must have been the one who caught her and knocked her out, as nobody else could have done that. And he almost certainly did that with an intention of letting Yukiteru kill her or even kiling her himself, as he already stated that he wanted Yukiteru to be god.
* ILetYouWin: Implied to have intentionally lost to Yuno in the ''Redial'' OVA, as she finds the sword she took from him allowed her to go further in when her path was blocked.
* ImageSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfwvNGzy2WI The Search For A Certain Truth]]".
* ImmuneToFate: His Detective Diary gives him this ability. Doesn't prevent him from falling for Yuno's BatmanGambit however. And definitely doesn't protect him from willingly walking into a situation with incomplete information.
* IncrediblyObviousTail: When tailing Tenth, and indeed he gets spotted.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: In both the ''Redial'' manga and OVA, he comes to acknowledge that Yuno's love for Yuki is stronger than his own and that being with her is what's best for Yuki.
* TheKidWithTheRemoteControl: 3rd-world Deus gives Akise the demon [[Literature/ArsGoetia Gremory]] who obeys his every command and comes to like Akise.
* LastKiss: More like a stolen kiss, but it was probably his first with Yuki as well as his last as Yuno kills him shortly afterwards.
* LoveAtFirstSight: In ''Paradox'', Akise falls in love with the wounded Yuki at first sight.
* ManipulativeBastard: A (usually) heroic example, doing so in the service of keeping people safe.
* MysticalWhiteHair: His white hair certainly makes him look different from others. It later turns out he isn't even human.
* MythologyGag: Akise briefly having Yukiteru's physical appearance at the beginning of the ''Redial'' OVA is almost definitely a reference to Paradox.
* NiceGuy: One of the nicest characters in the series, [[BewareTheNiceOnes for the most part.]] He didn't kill Yuno when he had the chance because of his better judgment. However, he soon regrets it, and she kills him.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Despite Akise sparing Yuno's life when he had the upper hand, she manages to trick his diary by forcing his blade into her abdomen, fulfilling his diary's prophecy and forcing him to waste his time in bandaging her wound so that she won't die, knowing that Yukiteru would lose his trust in Akise if he had allowed Yuno to bleed out. Once he runs to help the others, Yuno calls Yukiteru to lie to him about Akise and his friends, causing Hinata, Mao, and Kosaka to die as a result. Akise even relents that he should have killed her instead of letting her live.
* NotSoAboveItAll: For being such a heroic person, he's equally as {{Yandere}} to Yuki as Yuno is.
* OffWithHisHead: How he dies.
* OutGambitted: To be fair, no one aside from Mur Mur knew Yuno had a second diary.
* TheQuietOne: Usually.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: He's a subversion of the trope as despite being a very subtle {{yandere}}, he's mostly a nice person overall. DoubleSubverted in his final confrontation with Yuno; he went for the kill and was only thwarted when Yuno was revealed to be holding out the second Yuno's future diary for him to smash.
* ShipperOnDeck: Subverted. At first he seems to be pushing Yuki to go out with Yuno going as far as to set them up for a date that could very well make them closer than before. However, this is so he can trespass Yuno's home hoping to dig up information that will make Yuki realize how much of a bad person she is.
** Possibly zig-zagged in the ''Redial'' OVA, given that he intentionally lost to the 3rd-world's Yuno, and knowing what would happen if she freed the 1st-world's Mur Mur.
* ShipTease: A ''lot'' of this with Yukiteru in the main story and even stronger ''Paradox''. Also has a fair amount with Tsubaki in ''Paradox'', too.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Yukiteru-sexual. Purposely made to be this way so that he would watch over Yukiteru for Deus.
* SpannerInTheWorks:
** The reason Tenth got caught in the first place is that he assumed that Akise was a diary wielder and was out to kill him. These turn of events later lead to his death.
** He almost ruins Mur Mur's plans in ''Paradox'' by preventing the tragedies that happen to nearly all the characters.
** In the main series, his dying message to Yukiteru serves as a catalyst which triggers the events leading to the final act.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Despite being an enemy to her, Akise shows pity and compassion for Yuno several times due to her broken mental state and because he's aware that they are similar in several regards. This works against him when he spares her life, only for her [[NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished to come back and kill him.]]
* ThouShaltNotKill: Unlike Yuno, Akise does all in his power to avoid killing someone. This backfires on him in the end. May be from his role as the Observer.
* TheWatcher: His intended purpose.
* {{Yandere}}: Much more subtle than Yuno, but it seems to be there. While usually nice for everyone, he did prove on a few occassions that he's willing to sacrifice others for Yukiteru's sake. Once, without knowing whether it'll kill him or not, he instructed Yukiteru to break Kosaka's Child Diary, to see what might happen to him and to prevent Eighth from getting information from Kosaka's diary. Yukiteru did as he was told without any objections. Thankfully, since Kosaka wasn't bound by the game like the other diary holders, he lived.
** Made even more obvious after Hinata's death, when Akise's diary predicted that Yukiteru would also kill Mao and Kosaka. Despite arriving at the scene in time to prevent this, Akise decided to abandon them to their fates instead. When questioned about this decision by Yukiteru, he replied that his diary also predicted that he's going to kill Yuno in a few minutes, so he didn't want to do anything that might have changed that future.
** His vague {{yandere}} tendencies become less vague in ''Paradox'', in that he is much more open about his desire to make sure that Yukiteru becomes a god.

Another of Yuki's classmates, who quickly becomes friends with him. She's actually the daughter of the Tenth Diary Holder, and is commanding the dogs in place of her father, because she's desperate for her father's approval. 228* CameraFiend: Especially when exploiting Hinata's body.
* CovertPervert: She seems like a decent and polite girl, but she takes every opportunity she has to take naughty pictures of Hinata. She also gets a {{nosebleed}} when she gropes Hinata's breasts.
* EasilyForgiven: By Yukiteru, like Hinata.
* HeelFaceTurn: It tends to be forgotten, but in the story arc when she was first introduced she held Yukiteru hostage at knife point and tried to kill him via Diary.
* LipstickLesbian: She's very girly compared to Hinata and she obviously has the hots for her.
* PsychoLesbian: Helps Hinata in her scheme to kill Akise, despite the fact that Hinata was only doing it to [[WellDoneSonGuy gain her father's approval]]. 242Yuki's classmate, who doesn't like him much (the feeling's mutual). He enjoys blogging on his cell phone, which inadvertently connects him to the Eighth's Diary. He gets the "Kosaka King Diary" while attempting to rescue Yuki from Yuno. It predicts his "brilliant moments". Later in the series, it is upgraded to the "Neo Kosaka King Diary", which predicts the brilliant moments of the people around him as well.
----
* BlessedWithSuck: As Yuno points out after tricking him, his diary is fairly weak in its information gathering abilities.
* ButtMonkey: He deserves it most of the time.
* DyingCurse: Gives one to Yukiteru before being shot by him.
* EasilyForgiven: It should've been easy for Yuki to hate and hold a grudge against this guy for selling him out to Minene and being selfish jerk, but no Yuki sweeps that under the rug and still tries to be ''friends'' with him.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: He hangs around with Yuki, Akise, Hinata, and Mao, but they actually don't like him at all since he's kind of a jerk and wonder why they even keep him around.
* HonorBeforeReason: He has a surprising moment late in the story. While he had an opportunity to run, he refused to let Yuki have the last word and verbally tore into him, even knowing he could get shot for it.
* ImageSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE-Zm_y7XdE Me! Now? The Greatest!!!]]"

Don't go crying when you made this choice yourself! You're just a damn lowlife who killed his friends for his own convenience! *Gets shot in the stomach* You don't have a right to cry!"
* InconsistentSpelling: The official translation of his name is "Kosaka," but many fan translations render it "Kousaka."
* WeaksauceWeakness: His diary tells him his future victories, but doesn't have any information regarding the [[PyrrhicVictory costs or consequences]]. Yuno is easily able to lure him into a trap. He will technically succeed at rescuing Yukiteru from her, just like his diary says he will, but Yuno will have a crossbow ready to shoot him dead the instant he does it.

A police officer who works under Kurusu. Despite not having a Diary, he becomes deeply involved in the conflict between the Diary Holders, and especially after meeting and falling for Minene.
----
* AccidentalPervert: He gropes Minene after falling over her.
* [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys All Guys Want Bad Girls]]: He falls for Minene, who's you know, a ''terrorist.'' She gets better though.
* BabiesEverAfter: His 3rd-world self with 2nd-world Minene.
* BadassDriver: Understated but take note that he was the one driving the Eleventh's car in the car chase.
* BadassNormal: Notable in that his ''lack'' of a Diary is key to his effectiveness.
* CareerVersusMan: Gender inverted. He has to choose between doing his job as a policeman and later being the Eleventh's bodyguard and his feelings for Minene. He chooses Minene, and even proposes to her.
* TheCharmer: Though he (unknowingly, at first) ends up mostly just pursuing Minene every time.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Brown hair and eyes.
* DatingCatwoman: A cop in love with the terrorist Minene.
* DoggedNiceGuy: To Minene while she was disguised as Natsuko.
* DoppelgangerReplacementLoveInterest: His 3rd-world self to Minene.
* TheDulcineaEffect: Decides to throw away his career, betray his colleagues, and propose to a terrorist he's known for a very short amount of time.
* EngagementChallenge: Minene gives this to him when confronting the Eleventh saying that he can take her hand in marriage if he can destroy the Eleventh's supercomputer. He succeeds.
* FairCop
* FriendOnTheForce: To Yuki and his friends.
* GoodCopBadCop: With him as the good cop and Kurusu as the bad cop.
* GoOutWithASmile: In the manga, the last thing he did before he died was give one final smile to Minene.
* HappilyMarried: His 3rd-world self to 2nd-world Minene in the DistantFinale. Much to his chagrin, he still has to catch and arrest his wife's counterpart, who is still a terrorist.
* HaveWeMet: His 3rd-world self somehow recognizes Minene when he meets her.
* LoveTranscendsSpacetime: Its implied that his feelings for Minene are carried over to his 3rd-world self. [[BabiesEverAfter Two years later they are married and have kids together]].
* MoralityChain: Nishijima's and Minene's love for each other is what also results in the latter's HeelFaceTurn and side with Yuki. However, when he is killed thanks to Yuki's manipulations, it's immediately coincided with Minene turning against Yuki once more and led to her being shot in self-defense as a result.
* NiceGuy
* OfficerAndAGentleman
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure
* SharpDressedMan
* TheSlacker: Shown to be like this during his time as a rookie in the 3rd-world. He seems to be a more serious and competitent cop during the time of the actual story.
* TakingTheBullet: Heartbreakingly, to protect Minene. Yuki gets blamed for it since he used Minene and Nishijima as decoys to clear the path ahead to go to John Bacchus.

Yuki's mother who's usually away from home due to work. Despite this, she and Yukiteru are shown to have a stable and loving relationship. She approves of Yuno and Yuki as a couple, against Yuki's ignored protests.
----
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: She shows Yuno naked baby pictures of Yuki.
* ParentalObliviousness: Especially towards Yuno's... behavior. Though in Rea's defense, Yuno can fool pretty much anyone who doesn't know her that well.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: If Yukiteru is Jupiter, then Rea is his Titaness mother Rhea.
* ShipperOnDeck: She approves Yuno's relationship with Yuki.

Yuki's father who left after a divorce years ago. He and Yukiteru are shown spending some father-son bonding after a long time since the divorce around 2/3 into the manga, where he is introduced.
----
* AccidentalMurder: [[spoiler: He accidentally kills his ex-wife when he stabs her out of panic.]]
* DirtyCoward: He jumps out of a collapsing Sakurami Tower by ''stealing his son's parachute'' leaving him to die and then he stabs his ex-wife (which kills her) when she stops him from escaping because he's terrified that she'll tell the police he just left his son to die on a collapsing tower. However, he likely [[AccidentalMurder did not intend to kill his ex-wife]].
* DisappearedDad: He left Yuki years ago after he and Rea got a divorce. He came back though.
* EasilyForgiven: Despite abandoning Yukiteru and Yuno, as well as killing Rea, his son still forgives him when he apologizes.
* HandsomeLech: He's handsome and very pervy.
* HopeSpot: He genuinely felt remorse for killing Rea, and he told Yuki that he would turn himself in for his crimes. Right when it seemed like he was on the road to redemption, the 11th's men murdered him as punishment for failing to repay his debt.
* ItsAllAboutMe: His most prominent flaw is that he puts himself and his own troubles before everyone else. He shows up just to find and break Yuki's Diary so that the Eleventh will clear the '''3 million yen''' debt he owes. However, at least in the anime he doesn't realize that doing so will kill Yuki.
* {{Jerkass}}: He puts his problems before anyone else's - [[SharedFamilyQuirks something that he shares with his son to a lesser extent.]]
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: With all that said and done, he didn't know that destroying the Diary meant killing his son. All he knew was that if he broke his son's cellphone, his debt would be wiped clean: that would give him the chance to go back to his family and make amends.
* OffingTheOffspring: He tries to destroy Yuki's Diary, although in the anime he doesn't realize that this will kill Yuki; in the manga it's not made clear whether he knows this or not.
* PetTheDog: After he kills Rea and appears to be about to eliminate the evidence and escape, we learn that he had retrieved a telescope he had been previously forced to pawn so that he could gaze at the stars and calm himself before turning himself in. He also asks Yuki to start over with him when his sentence is over, to which he agrees. Despite trying to sell Yuki out to the enemy, and murdering his mother, it turns out those were just horrible mistakes that he never meant to happen and all he wanted was for the family to be happy... [[RedemptionEqualsDeath and then he dies]].
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Yuki was willing to give him another chance after he turned himself and fulfilled his sentence, but the Eleventh's men killed him before he could do any of that. Ergo, Yuki forgave him completely and then freaks out on the murderers.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Fitting with the rest of his family's ThemeNaming, "Kurou" resembles "Cronus". Not to mention how he tries to kill his son...
* TooKinkyToTorture: He once begged Minene to keep kicking him.
* VisitByDivorcedDad: It wasn't for making up for lost times.

* TheAtoner: Saika in the 3rd-world. Having realizing the error of her ways, she becomes a lot more loving of Yuno.
* ControlFreak: Saika measured everything Yuno did from how many hours she got to sleep to how many calories she had a day. She also kept her in a cage and starved her in an effort to raise her to be a model person.
* DeathByOriginStory: They've been dead for two years by the start of the story, and it is because of Yuno's relationship to them that she ended up [[AxCrazy the way]] she did. [[AvertedTrope Averted]] in the 3rd World, where they are alive.
* GoodParents: In the 3rd-world by the last episode.

* ObliviouslyEvil: Ushio has no idea that Yuno is being abused by Saika the way she is, but his business-oriented neglect of both Saika and Yuko enables it to happen.
* PapaWolf: Ushio. In the 3rd-world, he rushes home when he was notified about his daughter whom he shows great concern for. He even took the knife meant to kill her.
* ParentalAbandonment: Yuno says they are working over-seas. Of course, this is a cover story in order to hide their deaths.
