Juvia Lockser is a female wizard who served as the former [[MakingASplash Water Magic]] specialist of Phantom Lord's Element 4. Using her powers, she can transform her entire body and clothes into liquid, and create and [[MakingASplash manipulate water as she chooses]]. [[DarkAndTroubledPast She grew up alone]] and [[FriendlessBackground unloved as a child]] since she always brought [[GrayRainOfDepression rain]] wherever she went. After a fateful encounter with Gray Fullbuster during the war with Fairy Tail, [[LoveAtFirstSight she falls madly in love with him]]. Following Phantom Lord's demise, she [[HeelFaceTurn joins the Fairy Tail guild]] to be [[DefectingForLove close to Gray]]. Though her efforts are often [[DoggedNiceGuy ignored at best and rejected at worst]], she slowly but surely becomes one of Gray's [[TrueCompanions dearest companions]], and a valued member of the Fairy Tail guild.

[[foldercontrol]]
[[folder:A-H]]
* AbhorrentAdmirer: She serves as one to Gray. While she is a very attractive young woman, Juvia's clingy and forward behavior towards Gray does more to [[NoGuyWantsToBeChased repel than attract him to her]]. She slowly grows out of this trope once Gray starts to show signs that he has feelings for her later in the series.
* AccentAdaptation: The Tagalog and Animax English dubs give her [[EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench a French accent]].
* AffectionateNickname: In the original dub, Juvia refers to Gray with the honorific, "sama", expressing her deep admiration for him. In the dubbed version, she usually refers to him by several nicknames including "darling," "my love," and "my beloved."
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Before joining Phantom Lord, she's viewed as an outsider by the other children and rejected by any male suitors thanks to her PowerIncontinence.
* AlmightyJanitor: She was when she was in Phantom Lord, where she was an S-Rank Wizard. She was demoted when the guild disbanded, which meant she had to take the exam to achieve the title again after joining Fairy Tail.
* AlwaysWithYou: She sacrifices herself to save Gray, using her magic to give him a blood transfusion, stating that she'll live on inside of him. It's not very comforting for Gray, who doesn't realize that Juvia pulled through with Wendy's help.
* AnimeHair: Her introductory hairstyle has her hair curled into rings around the back of her head. Her later hairstyles drop this entirely.
* AntagonistAbilities: [[MasterOfOneMagic Although her magic power is limited to a category of uniquely elemental magic]], Juvia (especially when she was introduced as an enemy) differs greatly from the rest of other [[MakingASplash Water magic]] practitioners such as [[TheAce Mirajane]], [[UnfriendlyFire Aquarius]] or [[TheArchmage God Serena]] because, although apparently she seems to be missing of their ability to flood a whole battlefield with water, at the beginning she had a vast set of water spells that differed from each other both for their abilities and for the purposes for which she used them. This gave her a huge advantage against other mages who using ordinary magics like hers, to the point that she could even compensate for the natural weakness of her element against other elements such as ice by boiling the water to the point that she could hold her step and even almost overwhelm Gray during their combat. It's a lot of fun if we consider that after her HeelFaceTurn, she becomes a living reversal of the trope because all the opponents she will face have been able to easily curb her skills.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Despite being easily distracted at times, especially when it comes to Gray, Juvia is shown to have fairly keen analytical skills. For instance, when Gray makes a decoy of himself in the darkness to throw off Simon in the Tower of Heaven arc, she realizes that Simon must have known he was attacking a fake since he can see in the dark, deducing that he never meant to harm Gray.
* BadassAdorable: While a highly capable water mage, Juvia is really just a big, lovable softy, especially around Gray... unless [[{{Yandere}} other girls are around]].
* BattleCouple: With Gray, who notes that they both work extremely well together due to how their magic compliment each other. This becomes more noticeable after the second TimeSkip.
* BattleInTheRain: Invoked during her battle with Gray in the Phantom Lord arc due to her PowerIncontinence causing it to rain wherever she goes. She also has one with Merudy on Sirius Island.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Juvia joins Phantom Lord because Jose overlooks the rain constantly around her. On a more positive note, this is also what leads her to reaffirm her love for Gray (in the anime, at least) after he accidentally insults the rain she brought, only to save her from falling to her DisneyVillainDeath after beating her. And by following Gray after Phantom Lord's disbandment, she notices how the Fairy Tail guild members care about each other despite their oddness, which makes her want to join the guild.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: As a Fairy Tail member, Juvia is one of the sweetest, kindest, and most compassionate characters in the entire series. However, just as ever changing as the water she controls, Juvia has been known to unleash such a righteous fury against those who dare threaten her beloved Gray.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: She suffers it during the arc of the Tower of Heaven where she is transformed not only mentally but also [[EvilMakeover physically into a more vulgar and shameless version of herself]] by Vidaldus Taka (to the delight of Jellal who perceives the combat) and is dangerously incited against Lucy. Fortunately for both, Juvia's heart manages to communicate with that of Lucy, allowing her to rebel and free herself from the dark magic of the enemy.
* BrokenBird: As a child, she was constantly ridiculed by other children and rejected by the men in her life because she couldn't stop making it rain everywhere. When Gray unintentionally comments on the rain during her confession, it triggers such painful memories that she ''snaps'' and tries killing him.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Juvia tends to be sweet, bubbly, and outgoing, which contrasts to the more aloof and brooding Gray.
* BurningWithAnger: Juvia does a variant when Gray pisses her off during their battle: her [[ElementalShapeshifter Water Body]] and attacks start ''boiling'' to a temperature he can no longer freeze over.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Like most of the female characters, Juvia has a sizable chest which is played for fanservice on occasion. When Wendy has to [[UndressingTheUnconscious undress her when she's sick]], the sight causes Wendy's ACupAngst to manifest so strongly she gets into a CornerOfWoe. And being the water mage of the guild it is not uncommon to see Juvia wearing bikinis that really emphasize her bust size. Following the fight with Invel, her clothes are damaged to the point that her breasts are almost fully exposed.
* CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest: An inverted example. Juvia is very shy about getting undressed, even in the presence of other girls. That said, she has almost no inhibitions around Gray, even stripping in public whenever he does.
* CantHoldHerLiquor: Like the rest of female members of Fairy Tail, Juvia has low alcohol tolerance. Two instances depict her becoming an emotional drunk who cries over the most trivial things, which makes even more clingy towards Gray.
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Drip, drip, drop." Though she stops using it as the show progresses, reflecting her growth.
* CharacterTic: She cups her chin with her hands whenever she is experiencing intense emotions, both happy and sad. She also has a habit of clasping her hands together for the same purpose.
* ChekhovsGunman:
** In the anime, she is first alluded to in the fourth episode, where a fortune teller mage tries to use his magic against Gray, only to end up predicting that the Ice mage will meet someone special, with the stars pointing to trouble with water and women.
** Taken a step further when she finally makes her official debut. She started out as a member of a team belonging to Fairy Tail’s biggest rival guild, only to become one of the most prominent characters in the series after switching over to the Fairy Tail guild.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She flies into a rage when she first thinks Gray is in love with Lucy and subsequently attaches herself to Gray whenever Lucy shows up. Still, as far a jealousy goes, it's much more good-natured than the norm ClingyJealousGirl standard. [[VitriolicBestBuds Lucy being one of her best friends]] and there isn't a truth to Lucy trying to steal Gray away from Juvia don't help matters, either.
* ClothingDamage: While not as frequent as Lucy or Erza, Juvia's clothes have been known to get damaged in her more serious battles, notably during her fight with Merudy. Played straight in the final arc, when she and Gray were forced to fight each other by Invel to death. Juvia spends the rest of the arc with her clothes torn to the point it barely covers her body.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: She's prone to childlike romantic fantasies the very moment her thoughts turn to Gray, or [[ClingyJealousGirl anyone who might try to take him for themselves]].
* ColorMotif: She's associated with blue due to being a water mage, which includes wearing clothes in different shades of blue in addition to having blue eyes and hair.
* CombinationAttack: Among all the characters, Juvia is the one that tends more to join forces with others to overcome all the obstacles that arise to her.
* CombatPragmatist: Although not shown often, Juvia is someone who has no problems fighting dirty. In her fight with Merudy, she used the water around her to use attacks that Merudy couldn't block due to the amount of water, then followed it up with another attack before she could recover. Later in her battle with Keyes, she allowed herself to be absorbed by his attacks so she could destroy him from the inside.
* CovertPervert: Despite her sweet and innocent personality, she is to prone to have perverted moments on occasion.
** In one of her word-twisting moments, she mixes up "heated battle" with "[[PrimalScene heated grappling]]" and almost proceeds to [[BattleStrip take her clothes off]] before Lucy stops her.
** On a few occasions, she will fantasize herself being with Gray in intimate scenarios.
** She appears to possesses a masochistic side, as she wanted Gray to [[KinkySpanking spank her]] as punishment for making a mistake.
** She likes the idea of having an erotic "accident" with Gray.
* CreepyLonerGirl: When she's introduced, Juvia is a gloomy, borderline emotionless young woman who was never able to make friends because she unintentionally made it rain wherever she went. Then she [[LoveAtFirstSight falls for Gray at first sight]] and is defeated by him, which causes her to immediately defrost into a love-struck maiden and she becomes more sociable after joining Gray's guild. She still can come off as creepy thanks to her StalkerWithACrush antics, though.
* CreepyMonotone: Before meeting Gray, her normal manner of speaking is a gloomy and emotionless monotone.
* CrushFilter: She sees a prettified Gray whenever she starts to fantasize about him.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Her eyes match the color of her hair.
* DarkIsNotEvil: She is pale-skinned, often wears dark clothes, and starts out as a member of an enemy guild. However, she's a real sweetheart once you get to know her, provided [[{{Yandere}} you keep your thoughts off of her darling Gray]].
* ADayInTheLimelight: The 413 Omake/Episode 220 focuses entirely on Juvia as she celebrates the 413th day since she met and fell in love with Gray.
* DeathGlare: She gives these to anyone she thinks is interested in Gray, most notably Lucy.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: She starts out as a member of Fairy Tail's biggest rival guild when the series begins, but her defeat at Gray's hands leads her to join his guild just to be with him.
* DefectingForLove: A {{downplayed|Trope}} example. In the aftermath of her duel with Gray Fullbuster, she sets out to join the Fairy Tail guild so she may pursue her feelings for (read, "[[StalkerWithACrush stalk]]") him. In this case, however, Phantom Lord was being dissolved by the time she started following him, leaving her with nowhere else to go.
* DefrostingIceQueen: When she is first introduced, Juvia doesn't show any emotion aside from her stoic, calm demeanor. After her duel with Gray, however, her emotions open up considerably.
* DespairEventHorizon: When Natsu and his friends meet her again after Fairy Tail disbands, Juvia's still grieving Gray's six-month disappearance to the point that she makes rain pour down on the village she's staying in.
* DesperatelyCravesAffection: Having spent most of her adolescence being rejected by any male suitors, she dedicates much of her time trying to win Gray's affections, and becomes distraught whenever he doesn't show any interest in her.
* {{Determinator}}: When Gray orders her to do something, not even a completely useless wounded leg will prevent Juvia from drag herself in a disquieting way in pursuit of a little girl and reaching her.
* DevotedToYou: She's single-mindedly devoted to loving Gray and no one else.
* DisneyVillainDeath: A subverted example occurs in the anime, where Juvia falls from the sky to her impending death at the conclusion of her battle with Gray. Fortunately, he saves her just in time.
* DistractedByTheSexy: Her attraction to Gray made it hard for her to fight him when they first met, especially after his stripping habit kicked in. This was also the case the Grand Magic Games, as her desire to hug one of the Gray clones caused her to lose a point for her team.
* DoggedNiceGirl: She is absolutely persistent in her efforts to get Gray to like her. Most of them backfire spectacularly, but it only makes her try harder.
* EasilyForgiven:
** In the aftermath of the guild war with Phantom Lord, the Fairy Tail members quickly accept Juvia the moment she joins. While her list of crimes against the guild and its members is admittedly far smaller than Gajeel's, she did kidnap Lucy for Phantom Lord, attempted to kill Gray when he fought her to stop Abyss Break's activation, and up until being defeated by the latter was perfectly willing to back up Phantom Lord in his plan to destroy Fairy Tail and crushing Mirajane to death.
** Granted, after joining Fairy Tail and during the Thunder Legion's revolt, when Freed locks her and Cana in magical cage match where only the one left standing may leave, Juvia opts to destroy one of Laxus' Thunder Palace lacrimas instead, [[TakeAThirdOption shocking herself into incapacity, so as not be forced on onto take up arms against her comrade, and freeing Cana at the same time.]] It's likely this self-sacrificial act which cemented her standing as a true member of Fairy Tail in her guildmates eyes, past transgressions be damned.
* EatingTheEyeCandy: Juvia enjoys ogling at Gray, especially when he unconsciously strips.
* ElementalHairColors: She's a water mage with blue hair. Also, her blue eyes make her count for ElementalEyeColors too.
* ElementalShapeshifter: Her entire body (and clothes) is made of water, and she can assume numerous different forms.
* EmotionalPowers: Her magic power is derived from her emotional state, increasing exponentially whenever she experiences [[ThePowerOfLove a burning passion for Gray]]. It also borders on EmpathicEnvironment, causing it to rain heavily when she suffers from extreme depression or distress.
* EmotionlessGirl: This trope is played straight during her first appearance. Then Gray stepped into the picture, and the BlushStickers appeared, and this character trait was all but abandoned.
* EveryoneHasStandards: [[EatingTheEyeCandy For obvious reasons]], she is the only one in the Fairy Tail guild who doesn't seem to mind Gray's stripping habit. That said, even she has had to remind him to put his clothes on, usually whenever the guild has visitors. Also, during the second TimeSkip when the two lived together, Juvia had grown tired of having to constantly pick up Gray's clothes whenever he stripped during training.
* EvilMakeover: She suffers one when Vidaldus performs BrainwashedAndCrazy on her, becoming substantially a sadistic rock groupie girl with a wild and shameless style that contrasts remarkably with [[ProperLady the style of her true personality]].
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Following the aftermath of Phantom Lord's guild war with Fairy Tail, she cuts her hair short to signify her [[TookALevelInCheerfulness more cheerful demeanor]]. However, she [[HairReboot instantly grows her hair back]] in [[PersonalRaincloud despondence]] when she discovers that the Gray in [[BizarroUniverse Edolas]] was in love with her own Edolas counterpart, [[ComicallyMissingThePoint who had the same hairstyle as she did before]]. By the end of the Grand Magic Games, she [[LettingHerHairDown lets her hair down completely]] when she decides to be more open with her love for Gray.
* {{Flanderization}}: In early manga appearances, her affections for Gray and imagined rivalry with Lucy are much more reserved than they are shown in the anime version, where she experiences CharacterExaggeration and starts ChewingTheScenery whenever either subject is brought up. The anime also sees her being much quicker to assume that other women ([[MistakenForGay and some men]]) might be romantic rivals, whereas her original rivalry with Lucy stems from a misinterpretation over how [[TrueCompanions he'd risk his life for her]].
* FlowersOfFemininity: One of her hats is decorated with a yellow flower and she's one of the most feminine women in the guild.
* TheForceIsStrongWithThisOne: When Merudy threatens Gray in the Sirius Island arc, Juvia begins to easily overwhelm her with powerful water attacks and shows such strength that Erza--officially recognized as the strongest woman of Fairy Tail--reevaluated her initial combat abilities from when she had easily defeated her. Even Merudy, who had ranked her thirteenth among the most important members of Fairy Tail to kill, realizes that the more Juvia lets herself go completely to her emotions, the more her magic power increases.
* ForgotAboutHerPowers: At first, though her magical power only revolved around the element of water, she had a high arsenal of rather versatile spells. However, as the manga progresses, in the fights she begins to always use the same attack spells such as Water Slicer and Water Nebula, despite she could easily use her Water Lock, a spell that creates an enormous water bubble that can drown her opponents.
** Her Water Slicer seems much weaker than it does at the beginning; at its first use, Juvia herself explained and demonstrated that the water of this spell is so pressurized that it can cut hard elements such as stone and rocks. However, starting from the fight against Merudy onwards, Water Slicer is only used only as a means to easily sweep away the enemy (despite technically, considering its original characteristics, [[OneHitKill the enemies should be killed instantly]]).
** Many times she also seems to forget to change her body into water while fighting to avoid physical damage. However, this may be justified that even if she does use it, Mashima would invent various methods to allow her opponent to damage her anyway, as evidenced by the the Sirius Island and Alvarez Empire arc.
* FriendlessBackground: She didn't have any friends as a child due to the rain that followed her wherever she went. Ironically, after joining Fairy Tail, she is warmly accepted by her new guildmates.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: Her dorm is filled with countless plush dolls of Gray. While it’s never outright said, it is very likely that she made them all herself.
* TheGlomp: Juvia frequently greets Gray by giving him hugs. This habit proved problematic for her during the Grand Magic Games, as her desire to hug one of the Gray clones causes her to lose a point for her team.
* GoodCostumeSwitch: After Phantom Lord's demise, Juvia sheds the ''teru teru bozu'' doll and completely changes her outfit.
* GratuitousSpanish: Juvia's name is taken from "Lluvia," which is Spanish for rain.
* GrayRainOfDepression: She used to cause this unconsciously with her magic, and was ridiculed as a result. She causes this again over the second time skip, alone and heartbroken after Gray disappeared for six months.
* HeelFaceTurn: It starts when she [[DefectingForLove falls in love with Gray]] and becomes solidified when she joins Fairy Tail around the time of Phantom Lord's demise.
* HeroicSacrifice: She pulls one off for Cana when they are forced to battle each other in the Fantasia arc by attacking the Thunder Palace lacrima above them and electrocuting herself to prove that she really loves everyone in Fairy Tail, not that Cana needed convincing. It doesn't kill Juvia, though.
* HeroicSuicide: She commits suicide when she and Gray are trapped and forced to fight due to Spriggan 12 Invel's magic, both in order to prevent herself from killing him and sparing him the agony of killing her. When she realizes Gray did the same thing, she uses the last of her life to perform a blood transfusion magic to save him. Despite her apparent demise, she pulls through with Wendy and Carla's help.
* HopelessSuitor: She is hopelessly in love with Gray, a young man who has shown very little interest in pursuing a romantic relationship. Her affections for him are largely ignored, first because he is ObliviousToLove, and later because her damnedest efforts to change that become annoying. It's gradually subverted by the end of the Tartaros arc, however, when he thanks and apologizes to her for being forced to kill the necromancer who was controlling his dead father. After that, they begin living together comfortably and are driven to a mutual (attempted) HeroicSuicide in the Alvarez Empire arc when compelled to fight each other. By the beginning of the 100 Year Quest, Gray admits that he does love her.
* HypocriticalHumor: Juvia is madly in love with Gray and sees Lucy as a rival, despite the latter's constant protests. Lyon is madly in love with her and Sherria views ''Juvia'' as a rival, despite ''her'' constant protests.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:I-S]]
* IconicOutfit: Throughout the series, Juvia often takes a liking to wearing blue-colored clothes as well as a fur-trimmed hat.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: This is one of the reasons Juvia wants to join Fairy Tail: Growing up unloved and without friends as a child, she becomes entranced by the members of Fairy Tail. She can tell that while they're odd and often bicker over trivial things, they are like a family, something that Juvia has longed to be a part of for so long.
* ImaginaryLoveTriangle: She misinterprets Gray's DeclarationOfProtection towards Lucy to mean he is in love with her, and thus believes her to be a rival in love. This eventually spirals out of control until she believes that she's in a LoveDodecahedron.
* ImaginedInnuendo: During their first battle, Juvia first mistook Gray's stripping as a sign of sexual intent, which she understandably thought was moving too fast.
* ImportantHaircut: After her HeelFaceTurn and joining the Fairy Tail guild, Juvia gets a new outfit and cuts her hair to a shorter length.
* InconsistentSpelling:
** The Funimation English dub spells her surname as "Loxar".
** The Italian dub renders her name as "Lluvia Loxar".
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Post-Phantom Lord, she remains one of the most pure-hearted members in the Fairy Tail guild. She stands by her new guildmates, willing to put her life on the line to save them, and despite her tendency to get jealous of other female members, such as Lucy, she won’t try to harm them.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: She picks up Gray's stripping habit after the second TimeSkip, though she's not as unconscious about it.
* InsecureLoveInterest: While Juvia becomes deeply in love with Gray almost immediately upon meeting him, she's unable to work up the courage to properly confess her feelings to him, let alone even approaching him. She slowly gains more confidence as the series progresses.
* KillItWithWater: She kills Keyes by secretly inserting herself inside his body through her Water Body and then returning to human form in order to definitively stem his {{Intangibility}}.
* KinkySpanking: While on Sirius Island, she tells Gray to punish her for losing Zeref, going as far as to position herself to let him spank her. A creeped out Gray tells her that he’s not into that kind of thing.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Whenever she's not drooling over Gray, Juvia is very calm, poised in the heat of battle and ready to [[MakingASplash unleash destructive waves of water against her adversaries]].
* LargeHam: Prone to ChewingTheScenery ([[https://youtu.be/mhLz_0rcgek?t=86 literally]] at one point) whenever Gray is involved.
* LetsGetDangerous: Whenever Gray's life is in danger, Juvia will almost certainly and instantly [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} get her head out of the clouds]] in her rage and rush to protect him, resulting in her opponent being [[CurbStompBattle curb stomped]] without prejudice.
* LettingHerHairDown: By the time of the Grand Magic Games, Juvia decides to let her hair hang down loose for good to show her ongoing love for Gray.
* LonelyDollGirl: Juvia had no friends as a child because it would always rain when she was around. As a result, she wears a ''teru teru bozu'' doll on her collar which, in Japanese folklore, is supposed to stop or prevent the rain. In a bit of FridgeHorror, this makes the scene in the anime where she's crying while mass producing these all the more HarsherInHindsight in-universe. After joining Fairy Tail and falling in love with Gray, she abandons making the teru dolls in favor of making Gray dolls.
* LongHairIsFeminine: She has long blue colored hair, but she styles it in a Ojou style when she is introduced. After joining Fairy Tail, she cuts her hair to go with her new outfit. She later grows it back and wears it loose, showing that she is becoming more open with her growing love for Gray.
* LongRangeFighter: Downplayed, but her magic and approach to combat favours spamming attacks at a distance and taking advantage of her NighInvulnerability to avoid retaliation, a contrast to the KungFuWizard approach taken by most of Fairy Tail.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Doubling as a LoveAtFirstPunch, Juvia falls for Gray almost immediately when they face off against each other in the Phantom Lord arc. It ''really'' doesn't help matters that [[PleasePutSomeClothesOn his habit of disrobing]] kicks in almost as soon as their fight begins.
* LoveHungry: Juvia is obsessed with winning Gray's affections. She is frequently shown fantasizing about him professing his feelings for her, being intimate with her, and even them getting married.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: Although she is one of the most intelligent characters of ''Fairy Tail'', ever since the adaptation of the anime, [[{{Flanderization}} she is more often than not exploited for comedic gags regarding her love for Gray]].
* LoveRedeems: While she was nowhere near as evil as the other Element 4, it was her affection for Gray that made her want to join Fairy Tail and become good.
* MadLove: Even after Gray flat out tells her he's not interested in her, Juvia fails to catch the message. Gray cares more for her than some instances of this trope, though.
* MakingASplash: Her magic gives her the power to produce and control water, turn her body into water to avoid damage from most standard attacks, enclose her enemies in spheres of water to drown them, produce highly pressurized blades of water that can cut through the steel, and increase her body temperature to boiling levels when she falls prey to fiery emotions. She also learns Water Make similar to Gray, which she uses to transfuse her blood with Gray after they both mortally injure themselves.
* MaybeEverAfter: While it is never explicitly stated that they ever become an official couple, her near death in the Alvarez Empire arc causes Gray to realize his own love for Juvia. The finale all but says outright that Gray is at least willing to be intimate with her, blushing and vaguely saying that Juvia's body "belongs to him".
* MeaningfulName: The name "Juvia" comes from the Spanish word ''lluvia'', meaning "rain".
* MoodSwinger: She can snap from calm or cheerful to a towering temper or a malevolent vindictiveness and back again with speed, given her rain powers.
* MsFanservice: While she is usually dressed with more layers than Lucy and Erza, she has an equally sexy body like most of the female cast members, and can often be seen wearing bikinis while training. She even gets a BoobsAndButtPose when she tries to show off her new bikini to Gray.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Or as she calls it, her Gray Radar. Juvia seems to have a sixth sense when it comes to Gray, as she gets a strange feeling whenever something is happening to him or if he has been at a certain area. This is most notable in the Dragon Cry movie, as she is able to detect Gray's presence whenever he is close by or in danger.
* MysteriousPast: Despite being one of the most important good characters of the manga after Team Natsu, we know very little about her past: does she really possess the ability to use aquatic magic from her birth? From whom did she inherit or learn? Who were they and what happened to her parents?
* NakedInMink: Though it's rarely brought up, the manga artwork seems to indicate that Juvia doesn't wear anything other than her underwear beneath her coats, with some artwork hinting she doesn't even bother with that much.
* NearDeathExperience: In the Alvarez Empire arc, Juvia [[HeroicSuicide commits suicide]] to stop her from fighting against Gray thanks to Spriggan 12 Invel's magic and uses blood transfusion magic on him. Fortunately, Wendy is able to heal her just in time.
* NiceGirl: Once she joins Fairy Tail, she turns out to be one of the nicest characters in the entire series. She is very helpful, kind, and protective of her new guild mates, and tries to make an honest effort to earn Gray’s affections.
* NighInvulnerability: She's immune to physical damage and certain spells when her body is turned into water.
* OcularGushers: Due to her water magic, Juvia is capable of flooding buildings with her own tears.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: After witnessing the aftermath of a massacre caused by Tartaros, Juvia is majorly subdued and admits she's terrified of the upcoming battle. She also drops all her usual antics towards Gray, to the point Gray putting his hand over hers to comfort Juvia barely gets a reaction.
* {{Ojou}}: Her first look, which consisted of a young Russian woman's clothing from TheForties, her posture and her unusually gracefully decorated and detailed pink umbrella made her look like this during her first appearances, but after joining Fairy Tail she almost lost completely this feature.
* OperationJealousy: In ''Dragon Cry'', Juvia thinks about doing this to Gray by going with Gajeel on a job, but her fantasies begin to shift out of control (switching to Panther Lily, and then to ''Levy''), making her back out of the idea.
* ParentalAbandonment: Flashbacks showed that she grew up in an orphanage. Nothing has been elaborated on what happened to her parents.
* PerkyGoth: Her gloomy facade is easily broken after her first appearance, showing herself to be perky and the complete opposite to her usual personality. This is especially prominent when she's around Gray.
* PlatonicLifePartners: While they don't share a lot of scenes together, Juvia describes her relationship with Gajeel to be like this in an interview. In fact, she was the one who convinced Markov to find Gajeel and invite him to join Fairy Tail. This suggests that the two have some kind of history during their time at Phantom Lord.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: She gets easily upset whenever Gray leaves town without telling her, especially when he's with Lucy or other female characters.
* ThePowerOfBlood: By the Alvarez Empire arc, she masters the art of Water Make [[BloodMagic to transfuse her own blood with Gray, just to ensure she will live on as a part of him in case she dies]].
* ThePowerOfLove: Erza notes in the Sirius Island arc that Juvia achieves her full power while motivated by intense feelings of love for Gray.
* PowerIncontinence: Juvia said that ever since her birth, her magic had always caused it to rain persistently around her, to the point that before meeting Gray, she had never seen a blue sky before. This is because her powers are highly emotion-based, and her feelings of depression and isolation over driving others away with the rain have only given her even less control over it. Being abandoned by Gray in X792 only makes it go FromBadToWorse by triggering a perennial flood on an entire village (to the point to be even renamed as The Rain Village), though it clears right up when Gray finally returns.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: She immediately grows her hair back to her original hairstyle she was first introduced with after hearing about her Edolas counterpart.
* PrettyInMink: Most of her outfits are distinctly Russian-styled getups.
* ProgressivelyPrettier: While she was never necessarily ugly, she has a rather drab and gloomy face in her earliest appearances in the manga. Nowadays, she is at least as cute as the other Fairy Tail girls, and was even ranked 3rd in the Miss Fairy Tail contest.
* ProperLady: When she's not being a LargeHam or ClingyJealousGirl, she's rather demure and composed. She is also the only girl whose feminine skill is shown the most often in Fairy Tail: she sews her own ''teru teru bozu'' doll as a child, she makes Gray a lovely bento with a heart in the center, she bakes bread that has her face and Gray's face on them, she knits Gray a scarf, and her room is filled with Gray merchandise that is most likely handmade as well.
* PropertyOfLove: “If anyone’s cuddling with my beloved Gray, it’s going to me.”
* PunchClockVillain: In the Phantom Lord arc. Unlike many of the other Phantom Lord members who are evil bastards, she is just a regular wizard doing her job for a legal guild, which just happens to be catching Lucy and later defending against Fairy Tail's attack. Once the guild disbands, she's quick to get along with the other members, unlike Gajeel.
* RedemptionDemotion: Her rank in Phantom Lord is the equivalent of Fairy Tail's S-Class, but gets a literal demotion like Gajeel when she joins Fairy Tail, and has to take the annual exam to achieve the S-Class rank.
* RejectionAffection: Despite her many attempts to get his attention, Juvia's romantic gestures are largely ignored by Gray at first. As the series progresses, her gestures are slowly being reciprocated by the Ice Mage, much to her delight.
* RomanticSpoonfeeding: In the Penalty Game episode, she believes that Gray might have gotten a fever and offers to spoonfeed him some shaved ice. She gets a little overexcited and shoves the spoon down his throat, much to his chagrin.
* RousseauWasRight: Juvia is introduced with a cold-hearted, dead-inside affect. In reality, this is due to having grown up constantly being called "gloomy" because the rain followed her everywhere. Her actions on behalf of Phantom Lord stemmed from a deep sense of unhappiness than any sense of malice. After joining Fairy Tail, she becomes a kind and joyful person.
%%* RunningGag: Her ImagineSpots about her and Gray.
* SamaritanRelationshipStarter: In the anime, at least. She is deeply touched when Gray [[RescueRomance saves her]] from her DisneyVillainDeath following the conclusion of their duel.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: When paired with Gray. He is usually very focused on the task/jobs that they are given, while she will frequently get distracted by the thought of being with her crush and start to fantasize romantic scenarios of them being together.
* ScarsAreForever: At the end of ''Fairy Tail'', she is left with a scar on her abdomen from where she impaled herself in the Alvarez Empire arc, in the same location Gray did with himself.
* SelfProclaimedLoveInterest: She tries to make this clear to anyone who might show a potential romantic interest in Gray.
* SexySlitDress: By X791, she wears a dress with a slit that shows off her left leg and the Blue Fairy Tail stamp on her hip.
* ShipperOnDeck: Her mental LoveDodecahedron shows she's been keeping track of all the possible pairings with people that could possibly point back to her or Gray. Her romantic delusions can actually make her hallucinate the couples being together intimately.
* ShootTheDog: In the Tartaros arc, Juvia is forced to kill the {{Necromancer}} Keyes knowing that Silver, Gray's undead father, will only stay around with his son for as long as Keyes lives. If she hadn't, Keyes would've activated the Face bomb using the undead Council chairman. When the deed is done, [[DirtyBusiness she feels she's no longer worthy of Gray's love]].
* ShowerShy: Even though she has no shame in stripping down if Gray is around, Juvia is very shy about her body around other people, vocally expressing great reluctance to showering or bathing with the other girls.
* ShyBlueHairedGirl: Juvia starts out as this after joining Fairy Tail, particularly around Gray. She finds it difficult to confess her romantic feelings for him initially, leaving her to simply admire him from afar. She grows out of this as the series progresses.
* SignificantWardrobeShift: Juvia has changed up her appearance at least three times to gain Gray's affection, and during the Grand Magic Games Arc, she points this out when she designates each different version of herself like an upgrade with a number designation.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Gray is the only man she has in her sights, which she has openly vocalized to several characters, especially whenever other men are involved. Flashbacks do show that she once went out with Bora (he shot her down since she kept making it rain) but that was before she met Gray.
-->'''Chelia: '''I won't let you steal Lyon with your wild side!\
'''Juvia: ''' I told you, I only have eyes for Gray!
* SixthRanger: She is this to the Strongest Team during the Tower of Heaven arc. After joining Fairy Tail, she fits this trope for several arcs, being one of the most prominent allies to fight beside the Strongest Team.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: While she and Gray are both close in age, Juvia's lonely past has left her with poor social skills when she was introduced, and as a result, she can be quite naive and immature at times, even when she gets older.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: She's the only female member of Phantom Lord's Element 4 squad.
* SquishyWizard: Compared to the rest of the main Fairy Tail fighters, Juvia compensates for her magic's high offensive power with low resistance to damage from enemy attacks that are able to bypass the defenses of her water body.
* StalkerWithACrush: This is PlayedForLaughs when it comes to Gray, following him wherever he goes after Phantom Lord disbands. Her apartment is even one big StalkerShrine filled with items and dolls themed around Gray, right down to her Gray-shaped shower loofah and a towel with a picture of Gray along with the words "Gray-Sama Love" on it.
* StalkingIsFunnyIfItIsFemaleAfterMale: A lot of Juvia's obsessive romantic gestures towards Gray would not seem funny if the gender roles were reversed.
* StoppedCaring: Having grown up being ridiculed by the rain she could not control, Juvia had long given up hope that the rain would leave her or that she could ever be happy. When first introduced, she has a stoic demeanor while speaking in a monotone voice that makes her seem very aloof and antisocial. Fortunately, she overcomes this when an encounter with Gray finally stops her rain, and she goes on to become a very cheerful and kind member of Fairy Tail.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Juvia has shades of this during her earliest appearances. Normally a [[BrokenBird broken]] and [[EmotionlessGirl emotionless girl]], her iciness literally melts the moment Gray enters her life. She thus begins alternating between her usual gloominess and gushing over him the moment she so much as hears his name (heaven forbid the one who mentions him is another girl and/or wants him dead), until her [[TookALevelInCheerfulness warmer personality gradually takes over]].
* SupernaturalSuffocation: She can trap opponents in an orb of water that cuts off their oxygen supply.
* SwissArmySuperpower: Although not the same as practitioners of Make Magic like Gray, Lyon or Laki, Juvia has proven very adept at using her magic outside of combats to create oxygen-containing bubbles to allow her allies to stay underwater for a long time, creating a camouflage barrier around a boat and even creating a floating protective dome capable of resisting real tsunamis. Once she learns Water-Make to a level of proficiency and skill enough to the point of converting water to blood after the second Time-Skip, the trope is played straight.

[[folder:T-Y]]
* TakesOneToKillOne: Apart from very few exceptions such as Merudy's Maguilty Sense and Laxus's [[ShockAndAwe Lightning magic]], only Juvia's own magic is capable of injuring her own body. This is demonstrated when she breaks her own leg in the Sirius Island arc, and when she impales herself with a blade of water in the Alvarez Empire arc.
* ThereIsOnlyOneBed: Averted. When they were both living together, Gray and Juvia did have separate beds. This, however, did not stop Juvia from sneaking into Gray's bed while he was sleeping. He would always kick her out and tell her to sleep in her own bed, but that didn't stop her from trying.
* ThinksLikeARomanceNovel: When it comes to her fantasies about being with Gray. Sometimes, it even crosses into ArtShift to {{Bishoujo}}.
* ThirdPersonPerson: She refers to herself by her name practically all the time to demonstrate her immaturity, though there are ''very'' rare instances where she uses the pronoun "''atashi''", such as when [[BattleStrip she sees Gray strip for the first time]]. It's dropped entirely in the Funimation dub, though not without reason as the dubbers felt it made her sound arrogant rather than childish.
%% DO NOT add anything about Juvia using first-person pronouns more often over time. Juvia still speaks in the third person in Japanese and the official manga translation. The decision for fan translations to use first-person pronouns in place of Japanese phrases that require no pronouns does not indicate character development. Please refrain from using fan translations in place of official material. Read this Tumblr post for more information: http://thefairystales.tumblr.com/post/93576212697/juvia-still-speaks-in-third-person-chapter-394
* ThroughHisStomach: One of the few ways she tries to get Gray to notice her, to varying results.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Of Phantom Lord, as she is not cruel or vicious to the members of Fairy Tail and only fights against them because she was ordered to.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: She goes from a gloomy EmotionlessGirl during her Phantom Lord membership to a cheerful Fairy Tail wizard over time after losing her battle with Gray.
* TraumaButton: After Gray unintentionally comments on her downpours during their battle, she freezes up and flies into an extraordinary rage to the point where she uses Sierra in an effort to kill Gray.
* TrueBlueFemininity: She has blue hair and usually wears dark blue clothing, and is [[ProperLady reserved and ladylike]] when not [[LargeHam hammy]] or [[ClingyJealousGirl jealous]].
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Often times on the receiving end of this, with her demeanor causing her opponents to underestimate her abilities and will to fight. However, shown the willpower and skills to combat stronger enemies time and again, especially when she perceives that Gray is in any sort of danger, which makes her almost unbeatable.
* TheUnfettered: No matter how many times Gray bluntly turns her down, Juvia refuses to take a hint and continues in her attempt to win his affections.
* UnstoppableRage: Her fury, typically unleashed by the any sort of threats made towards Gray, easily allows her to overcome any obstacle she'd normally be unable to overcome.
* VillainousBreakdown: She goes through two of these in the Phantom Lord arc. First, she snaps after thinking Gray is in love with Lucy, resulting in her launching a flurry of water attacks. Then, when Gray unintentionally comments on her downpours, Juvia ends up blasting Gray with hot water and using Sierra to try and kill him.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She [[UnstoppableRage completely snaps]] each and every moment she senses Gray is in danger, or worse, is the target of another woman's affections.
* VitriolicBestBuds: She ends up befriending her [[ImaginaryLoveTriangle presumed rival in love]] Lucy in the Tower of Heaven arc, enabling them to perform a [[CombinationAttack Unison Raid]] on Vidaldus. She continues to view Lucy as her rival, though.
* WaterIsWomanly: Juvia is a Water Wizard who can turn her very body into water. In her introduction, she's the Water and only female in Phantom Lord's Element 4. Juvia is also, for the most part, demure and ladylike, being adept in traditionally feminine activities like sewing and cooking, and is defined by her devotion to her love Gray.
* WeakButSkilled: [[LightningBruiser Juvia isn't physically powerful]] and [[MadeOfIron resistant when compared to Natsu, Erza, Gray, Wendy, Laxus and Gajeel]], but her ability to turn herself into water to avoid harm comes in handy.
* WeatherManipulation: Her Water magic is so strong that every time she loses control or her emotions take over, Juvia makes it rain wherever she goes and even the sunniest of the days darkens in her presence.
* WingdingEyes: The Heart-shaped kind. Naturally, she has these whenever she is fawning over Gray.
* WomenPreferStrongMen: Juvia likes Gray, who is one of Fairy Tail's most powerful mages. She also appreciates how muscular he is, and never misses a chance to ogle at him whenever he strips his clothes.
->'''Juvia: ''' Oh, Gray, my love, I wish you'd carry me, too!
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: The reason why she's a gloomy person by the time she joins Phantom Lord can be chalked up to her frequent childhood downpours. She's nowhere near as evil as her fellow guildmates, and during the guild's war with Fairy Tail, she only fights because she's ordered to.
* WorfHadTheFlu: During her first exam for S-rank promotion, she is confronted and literally slaughtered with Lisanna by Erza quite easily thanks to Erza utilizing her Sea Empress Armor to nullify Juvia's water magic and Erza being naturally much physically stronger than either girl, causing her to be disqualified. Later, when she and Erza fight with Merudy, she is initially put down by the enemy once again managing to get around her Water Body, but when the latter explicitly threatens the safety and health of Gray, Juvia stands up and begins to slaughter her with powerful water attacks to the shock and the astonishment of Merudy, showing that Juvia's full potential only comes out when she's completely and utterly [[EmotionalPowers emotionally invested]]. It should be noted that when she went all out she managed to scare Erza, even if only for a moment.
* {{Yandere}}: She's a rather toned-down example. Despite words to the contrary, she's never willing to hurt Lucy or anyone else who shows affection for Gray. Threaten or harm Gray, on the other hand, and she will make every effort to reduce you to a crawling and bleeding being.
* YaoiFangirl: She gets grumpy when Gray talks with other girls, but occasionally she has fantasies of Gray being swayed by guys such as Lyon, resulting in a {{Nosebleed}}.
