[[folder:Zagan]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YuusukeKobayashi (Japanese), Kieran Flitton (English)
[[quoteright:588:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zagan.png]]
An 18-year-old mage (and, later, Archdemon) who inhabits the territory of Kianoides.
----
* AbsentMindedProfessor: He's like an [[{{Hikikomori}} overgrown]] teenage prodigy: great at magic, awful at life skills like cleaning, buying groceries, taking care of himself, etc.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: One of his main skills. He has studied magic so much he can usually figure out a way to destroy/reverse another Mage's magic circle before he can use the spell.
* BigGood: In the sense that his protection allows a lot of people to live in peace.
-->Following her gaze, Nephy’s breath caught as well. Then ''[sic]'' calmly looking over the surroundings, everything had returned to normal, not just the crystalline spears but the destroyed properties now looked like nothing had happened and the people that had been pierced were just stunned and fallen backwards.
* BirdsOfAFeather: Like him, Nephy had a harsh childhood of being shunned and abused by others. Zagan recognized the lonely and pained expression on Nephy's face when he first saw her and fell in love with her because he believed she could give him the bond he always wanted.
* BreakHerHeartToSaveHer: When he's promoted to fill the empty Archdemon seat, he frees Nephy and sends her away, for fear the other Archdemons would kill her if he didn't.
* BrilliantButLazy: Zagan didn't seem to want immortality so much as he wanted a reason to seclude himself and calm down from his TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening. (He picked immortality specifically because it's what every other mage is studying.) It's not until he frees another slave that he realizes he can use his power to do things that really matter to him.
** Subverted later on as he starts to care for others. Constantly working and developing new spells in order to gain an advantage on his enemies and to protect his loved ones.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Combined with RightForTheWrongReasons. He rescues innocents who cross his property, not because it's the right thing to do, but because the evil idiots attacking them are annoying him in the process in one way or another. As such, he really doesn't care about them, at all, and doesn't remember it. Several merchants he's aided do nice things to him as a result, and it baffles him.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: As a child, he was orphaned, forced to fend for himself in the slums, forced to steal to get by, and then was picked up as HumanResources by a mage. He became a mage by killing the bastard in self-defense.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Purchasing Nephy was all well and good, but he didn't even consider what he was going to do next, where she was going to live, etc.
* FaceOfAThug: His harsh expression and awkward ways to express himself usually make people find him scary. His gentler expression around Nephy helps people trust him more.
* GoodParents: He's a loving adoptive father to Foll, wanting to give her a normal childhood that he and Nephy didn't get.
* TheHermit: He spent many of his teenage years holed up in his castle, because he had seen the outside world as a beggar and did not want any of it. He only interacted with people during battles and Barbaros' attempts to mooch off of him.
* HorrifyingHero: Due to mages usually being evil, anytime he saved someone in the past they would usually flee in terror from him.
* HumanSacrifice: Andras intended to sacrifice him in a magic ritual, but he managed to kill him before the ritual was completed.
* IOwnThisTown: Kianoides, the town closest to Zagan's castle, is in his domain and well under his total control. Luckily for the every day people, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Zagan goes from occasionally saving them and suffering their existence to outright considering them under his protection and looking out for the city.]]
* LoveAtFirstSight: He falls for Nephy at first sight.
* MagneticHero: Averted. He is the focal point of the Orobas movement, but not because of his personality. It's just that Orobas doesn't have a base yet, so everyone in it squats in Zagan's giant, well-protected castle.
* MeanBoss: To everyone but Nephy. Working for Zagan means you get food, shelter, and protection from anyone who might be hunting you (and if Zagan's in a very good mood, some of his spells). It ''does not'' mean you will be respected, or only given work you know how to do.
* MerlinAndNimue: He initially takes in Nephy as a slave, but she ends up become more of a magic apprentice and eventually, his lover.
* MundaneLuxury: Zagan "inherited" Andras' castle and wealth, but having the former meant he felt no need for the latter. A decrepit, chilly castle was still the best shelter he'd ''ever'' had up to that point, and [[TooDesperateToBePicky he didn't mind]] that its only supplies of food were moldy, so he never tried to buy anything better.
* NoSocialSkills: At the beginning, he has absolutely no idea how to actually talk to Nephy and [[ThatCameOutWrong most everything he says comes out very wrong]].
* PersonalityPowers: He has a gift for taking others' things- their money, goods, or even preconceptions- and using them to suit himself. Naturally, his unique magic centers around absorbing and repurposing other mages' spells.
* RedBaron: When Zagan was elevated to the rank of Archdemon, the other Archdemons gave him the epithet "Mage-Killer".
* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: As an Archdemon, Zagan should be all rights have killed [[spoiler:Barbaros]] for acting against him. However, Zagan noted that Archdemons are supposed to be audacious and demonstrated this by sparing his opponent in exchange for [[spoiler:continuing to visit and bring good booze]].
* SickeningSweethearts: So much so with Nephy that the two of them holding hands turns the entire fanbase into TheKnightsWhoSaySquee
* SquishyWizard: Averted. He is able to break a blade with his bare hand and sends a guy twice his size in muscle with a FingerPokeOfDoom.
* StreetUrchin: In his childhood, he was a thief who had to steal to survive. His situation was so bad that he remembers ''prison'' fondly, because at least it provided food and shelter.
* SureLetsGoWithThat: He obviously can't tell Nephy the real reason why he bought her, so he stalls for time until she mentions that she can cook.
* SympatheticSlaveOwner: He bought Nephy at the auction because he fell in love with her. Even though they're officially master and slave, Zagan always treats her kindly and tries to make her life with him as comfortable as it can be.
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: In his youth, he was kidnapped by the mage Andras to be a HumanSacrifice. At that moment, his latent magical ability awakened and he killed the mage, taking his place.
* UnderstandingBoyfriend: He's very understanding toward Nephy's dark past and feelings because he lived through similar experiences.
* YouKillItYouBoughtIt: He becomes a mage by killing the mage who tried to make him a HumanSacrifice.

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KanaIchinose (Japanese), Abigail Blythe (English)
[[quoteright:474:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nep_9.png]]
The "Elf Bride" of the title. An albino ostracized by her fellow elves, she refused to protect them when slavers attacked their village. She was being delivered to the mage Marchosias when he died unexpectedly, so she was then auctioned off to Zagan.
----
* AccompliceByInaction: She didn't destroy her village, but she could've easily saved it from the people who did.
* AlbinosAreFreaks: Her white hair is one of the reasons why she was ostracized by other elves.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Other elves called her a cursed child and treated her terribly because of her ability to use Celestial Mysticism and white hair.
* BeautifulSlaveGirl: She's a gorgeous elf slave. Zagan actually buys her because of how beautiful she is.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: She was so shunned and jaded that Zagan clearing out a room in his castle for her causes her to happily devote herself to him, body and soul.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Nephy is a kind and gentle girl, but she can turn scary when she's angry, especially if someone hurts Zagan in front of her.
* BrokenBird: Years of abuse from her fellow elves and being sold as a slave caused Nephy to become depressed and borderline suicidal until she starts healing through a loving relationship with Zagan.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Displays this most clearly in the end of Volume 2 when Zagan starts getting friendly with Chastille.
* CuteAndPsycho: Regardless of her delicate appearance and gentle exterior, she is just as ruthless as her boyfriend. Maybe more so, since her killcount is higher. [[note]]At the start of the series, Zagan has killed Andras and several bandits who trespassed on his territory. Nephy is responsible for the death of an ''entire'' village.[[/note]]
* DeathSeeker: The moment she came into Zagan's possession, the first words that came out of her mouth were questioning how he was going to kill her, and suggesting various methods to carry it out. Zagain is properly horrified and has to constantly tell her he has no such intention.
* DefrostingIceQueen: When Zagan first meets her, she's very emotionally repressed after a traumatic past. She slowly warms up to Zagan as she comes to understand him and his love for her better.
* ExpressiveEars: Zagan has noticed that her ears twitch when she is happy.
* ExtremeDoormat: After Zagan buys her, Nephy is completely resigned to living as a slave and has no intention of resisting if Zagan were to torture or kill her. Luckily, Zagan turns out to be a kind master to her.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: She is a very good cook, usually making the meals both she and Zagan eat.
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: She speaks in a very polite manner, always treating others and especially Zagan respectfully.
* FountainOfYouth: She was turned into a child in Volume 4.
* GaiasVengeance: Her Celestial Mysticism means is that every part of nature in the vicinity tries to kill whatever poor bastard the sorcerer wants it too. Including inanimate vines. ''And baby animals.'' They're all locked into a vicious, merciless HiveMind.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She's a good person, but anyone who attacks her family must die, regardless how of little choice they had in the matter.
* GreenThumb: She has the ability to magically control plants.
* HappinessInSlavery: Nephy [[SubmissiveBadass allowed herself]] to be sold into slavery out of a combination of [[DarkAndTroubledPast suicidal depression]] and DesperatelySeekingAPurposeInLife. Several chapters later, her master has figured out how to disenchant her ExplosiveLeash, and Nephy is grateful for that, but none of her problems have been solved: she still doesn't have a family or goals or anything she could build a life out of. So in the end she asks him to put the collar back on, and they go home and have dinner.
* TheHeart: She is clearly the main reason Zagan has become a better person.
* HealingHands: Celestial Mysticism greatly increases her ability to use magic to heal others.
* HimeCut: She has blunt bangs, waist strap length sidelocks, and knee length straight hair, complementing her YamatoNadeshiko traits.
* MoralityPet: Both her existence and the fact that Zagan genuinely loves her (though he has a hard time showing it) makes him a better person.
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Usually played for laughs but she is very quick to suggest someone to be killed that is a problem for Zagan.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Her white hair is a hint to her being a high-elf of a distinctive lineage as well as her ability to use rare and powerful magic.
* NumberTwo: Zagan's default response to any question from his subordinates is, 'Why are you asking ''me'' this and not Nephy?'
* OccultBlueEyes: She has blue eyes and uses the highly rare Celestial Mysticism.
* OnlyOneName: She wasn't given a last name because the elves labeled her a "cursed child".
* PointyEars: She has the long and pointy ears common in elves.
* PowerIncontinence: When she uses her powers, she has little, if any, control over them. This is the primary reason she ''didn't'' protect her home village. The second reason is that they treated her quite cruelly beforehand...
* PropertyOfLove: After Zagan comes to her rescue at the end of Volume 1, she presents her SlaveCollar and ''asks him to put it back on'', declaring herself to be his possession for life. He happily accepts.
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: She's terribly embarrassed when Manuela puts her in a risqué outfit.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She grows to love Zagan because he's the first person who treated her with care and gave her a nice home even though she's still his slave in name.
* SlaveCollar: She wears the slave collar that was placed on her when she was supposed to be sold to the former Archdemon.
%%* StraightMan:
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Cold and indifferent on one side, sweet and adoring on the other.
* SuperpowerLottery: Being a high elf ''and'' an albino "cursed child", she was born with vast amounts of mana and the ability to use Celestial mysticism, which curbstomps normal magic.
* SwissArmyTears: Her tears are able to heal the stab wound in Zagan's hand.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Hurting Zagan is a good way to invoke her wrath.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Nephy is polite, gentle, a good cook, and utterly devoted to Zagan, but can be merciless when someone threatens those she loves.

[[folder:Valefor/"Foll"]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Akane Misaka (Japanese)
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fol_madome_anime.png]]

A hooded, mysterious mage who is revealed in Volume 2 to be a dragon child. She seeks revenge for her dead father, who she believes was killed by archangels.
----
* HappilyAdopted: By Volume 3, she's officially Zagan's adoptive daughter.
* MisplacedRetribution: She attempts to attack Chastille and later actually attacks Raphael since she believes they are responsible for her father's death. Only after the fight was over did Raphael reveal that her father died [[HeroicSacrifice helping them fight off demons]].
* RedBaron: "Apparition Valefor"
* ShesAllGrownUp: When she uses a spell to swap her and Zagan's ages, Foll grows into a ''stunning'' beauty, curves and all!
* SiblingsWanted: Having never been anybody's big '' anything'', she votes to keep Nephy in her transformed childlike state in Volume 4 solely so she can remain the "Big Sis".
* TinTyrant: Her initial appearance is this. Turns out she's animating most of the armor using magic; her head barely reaches up to the armor's helmet, let alone her eyes.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Raphael Hyurandell]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TetsuInada (Japanese)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raphael_madome_anime.png]]

An Archangel who has killed hundreds of mages for the Church. After the events of Volume 2, he defects and takes up residence in Zagan's castle as a butler.
----
* AnArmAndALeg: He lost his left arm protecting Foll from the demon chimera. Foll later gives him a replacement using armor animated by her magic.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Having been a friend of Foll's dad, he likes hanging out with her much as an uncle would his niece.
* DeadlyEuphemism: Due to his FaceOfAThug and reputation, everyone talking to him ''thinks'' this is what he is doing, when in fact he is genuinely trying to have a civil conversation.
* FaceOfAThug: This is one reason why he ended up killing so many mages: they just kept attacking him when he tried to talk to them (and recruit them into Orobas). The increasing killcount only makes things worse. It's the reason why he eventually entrusts Chastille with the role in the Unification faction, since she doesn't have a poor reputation hanging around her neck and has much better looks and social skills.
* FakingTheDead: He's officially declared dead by the church in order to become Zagan's butler.
* NoSocialSkills: He talks in a really intimidating fashion even when he's trying to be nice. Even worse, he grew up serving the very stern, fanatical Church, so his idea of how an authority figure 'should' act is warped.
* TheParagonAlwaysRebels: Spending his whole life killing mages only solidified his eventual conviction that killing mages doesn't solve ''anything'', not to mention his issue of the Church using ChildSoldiers.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Barbaros]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KishowTaniyama (Japanese), Mark Allen Jr. (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/barbaros_4.png]]

A neighbouring mage who likes visiting Zagan.
----
* AllForNothing: He does a bunch of kidnappings and tries to frame Zagan for it, purely to become the next Demon Lord, and then learns from Nephy that the Demon Lord council has already chosen Zagan.
* BadassNormal: While not exactly normal as he is a mage, the fact that he manages to fight Zagan to a complete standstill in volume 10 speaks of his capabilities. Zagan even states the only reason why he isn't an Archdemon is because there are no more positions to occupy, that and the others don't like his attitude.
* BetaCouple: He along with Chastille form the secondary couple in the series. They even have a spin-off series dedicated to them.
* BrilliantButLazy: Played straight and subverted. At the start he was constantly looking for cheap and easy ways to gain power, which is why Zagan could easily beat him. However after falling in with Chastille, he loses some of the lazy bit and starts working the proper way. By the time of Volume 10, he has become so powerful, that he was able to fight Zagan in a 3 hour duel to a complete draw, and this was without him having the power of an Archdemon.
* BodyguardCrush: His relationship with Chastille begins with him acting as her bodyguard at Zagan's request. By Volume 6, he starts to fall in love with her.
* BodyguardingABadass: Zagan assigned him to watch over Chastille who is in generally more than capable of handling herself.
* CastingAShadow: Barbaros' speciality is manipulating shadows. He can even hide in someone's shadow, which is how normally he follows Chastille.
* DrivenByEnvy: He's always been jealous of Zagan's fame/infamy and success at being a mage. To the point that he'd frame Zagan for a bunch of kidnappings.
* ExhaustedEyeBags: His eyes always look like he hasn't slept in weeks.
* FrameUp: He frames Zagan for a bunch of kidnappings.
* GeniusDitz: He is an incredibly talented mage who can fight Zagan to a draw, yet often he does incredibly pointless and stupid things. Zagan even states if he manages to acquire the power of Archdemon, he may become the most dangerous obstacle to his goals.
--> '''Zagan''': Why is he an idiot when he's got so much power?
** In the side story where he and Chastille are the main characters, Barbaros has often showed great intellect. Often able to spot, deduce and solve criminal activity easily. However, his methods of solving them are impulsive and would cause a troublesome aftermath unless someone reels him in.
--> '''Rachel''': I was just thinking...you are surprisingly smart Barbaros-san.
--> '''Barbaros''': You picking a fight or what?
* MomentKiller: Ends up ruining Zagan and Nephy's near-kiss in Volume 2 since he barged into them carrying poisoned Chastille.
* MundaneUtility: He creates new magic and improves his already existing ones and builds up his power, not for the purpose of overtaking Zagan or climbing the ranks of magical society, but solely for peeking on Chastille while she's bathing.
* OnlyFriend: Prior to Nephy entering Zagan's life, he was the only person in the world Zagan was even marginally friendly with.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: In Volume 1, as powerful as Zagan is shown to be, Zagan often notes that if the two of them were to ever actually fight, even in his own territory, with the full-home field advantage, Zagan is not confident he could beat Barbaros. This effect is quite lessened after Zagan kicks his ass at the end of Volume 1.
** Played straight later on when they have their rematch later on in Volume 10. He fights Zagan to a complete draw in a duel that lasts for 3 hours. Even Zagan is shocked that he can display this much power without the power of an Archdemon.
* SarcasticDevotee: After Zagan beats him, he's now this to Zagan.
* TheSleepless: He tinkers with adrenaline in his head with magic to avoid being sleepy.
* {{Tsundere}}: Typically a selfish {{Jerkass}}, he is shown to give special treatment to his love interest, Chastille. While he teases her more than anyone else, he also protects and cares for her beyond what his bodyguard duties outline. Yet he still denies his feelings whenever anyone tries to bring it up.
--> But still, this was Barbatos. Making him conscious of the fact posed the risk of aggravating his tiresome mindset, so Zagan had to tread lightly. On the other hand, if left unsettled, Barbatos was liable to spend the rest of eternity claiming he "didn't like her or nothin'."
* WithFriendsLikeThese: He's the closest thing Zagan has to a friend in the beginning of the series, and is clearly not good for Zagan's continued well-being.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Gremory]]
A mage Zagan meets during Bifrons' evening ball in Volume 3. After the ordeal in that volume, she joined Zagan's retinue.
----
* CharmPerson: Gremory's title of "The Enchantress" isn't just for show. Not only is her "Adult form" a sexed-up knock out, but Gremory knows how to charm others (specifically women) to become "unable to live without (Gremory)"!
* CuteWitch: Her child form, where she uses to act adorable, ride on Kimaris' shoulder, and recover from her old form's back pain.
* DualAgeModes: She normally use her magic to shift between 3 forms: her child form, adult form, and default old form.
* HasAType: Gremory is not exactly confirmed to be Straight, Lesbian, or Bisexual; but she is said to "Hate men" (to what point is unknown as she never acted on this claim) and is obsessed with charming other young women and being friendly with young children and finding them adorable (boy or girl).
** That being said, her desire to charm and sexually caress other young adult women like she attempted with Nephertos is rather telling of her type.
* HornedHumanoid: She has a pair of goat horns.
* HotWitch: Her adult form. Perfect form for seduction, it's also a form she uses when she needs high stamina.
* LovableSexManiac: {{Invoked}}, while she isn't running around having relations that we know of, her obsession with the concept of "Love" and ability to seduce/charm other women the point of making them "unable to live without (Gremory)" qualifies her as one.
* LoveFreak: She really likes to talk about "love power". Her teacher Orias is quite embarrassed by it.
* ShipperOnDeck: She absolutely ships Zagan/Nephy. She's also helping them advancing their relationship.
* SinisterScythe: She wields one as a weapon.
* WitchClassic: Her default form. She uses this mainly because more age = more power.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kimaris]]
A mage Zagan meets during Bifrons' evening ball in Volume 3. After the ordeal in that volume, he joined Zagan's retinue.
----
* BeastMan: He normally has a face of a lion.
* CowardlyLion: Kimaris is easily spooked and relies on Gremory to protect him, yet when he is provoked, he is a force to be reckoned with.
* MakeSomeNoise: Kimaris specializes in sound based magic.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ainselph Thalasa Neptuna/"Selphy"]]
A Siren singer who was hired by Bifrons in Volume 3. After the ordeal there and Manuela's advice she joined Zagan's household as a servant. She's also a Siren princess.
----
* NoNameGiven: She wasn't named at all in Volume 3, only named herself in Volume 4 after complaining that no one remembers her name. Her full name is only revealed in Volume 6.
* RebelliousPrincess: She ran away from her home since she disagrees with the fact that royal songs are considered sacred and should only be heard by a few, so she ran and become a singer, to share her talent to the world.
* TookALevelInBadass: She went from a noncombatant comic relief into a powerful combatant after she received a Holy Treasure in Volume 6, using it to help Lilith, Kuroka, Nephteros, and others fighting off Demon Lord sludge possessing Foll.
* ValleyGirl: She speaks like this, which is surprising considering that she's a princess.
[[/folder]]

!Kianoides
A trade city built on the intersection between several rivers.

[[folder:Manuela]]

A shopkeeper who befriends Nephy.
----
* BigSisterInstinct: The moment it looked like a Holy Knight came to kill Nephy (A complete misunderstanding). She didn't hesitate to jump in front of Nephy to protect her.
* CoolBigSis: She acts like this to Nephy, even referring to herself as a big sister at one point.
* CosplayOtakuGirl: One of her favorite things to do is to dress up cute girls in very sexy outfits. Nephy happens to be one of her regular, so she likes to do this to her. By Volume 6, even Zagan's not an exception.
%%* TheGadfly: To Chastille.
* ImTakingHerHomeWithMe: She tried to do this to Foll after she made an outfit for her.
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: Aside from having Angel wings, she doesn't seem to be any different from a normal human.
* WingedHumanoid: She looks like a human with green feathered wings.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kuu]]
A therianthrope Zagan rescued from slavers along with Kuroka. After the events of Volume 5 she ends up working for Manuela.
----
* DemonicPossession: Bifrons possessed her in Volume 5 to sow discord.
* LittleBitBeastly: As a therianthrope, she has fox ears and tails.
[[/folder]]

!The Church

[[folder:Chastille Lillqvist]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Hana Hishikawa (Japanese), Monica Flatley (English)

A renowned Archangel and bearer of the sword Azrael. Her refusal to kill Zagan got her excommunicated from the order.
----
* BetaCouple: She along with Barbaros form the secondary couple in the series. They even have a spin-off series dedicated to them.
* ButtMonkey: Her life gets worse in practically every scene she's in. You can't really blame the poor girl for being a crybaby.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: If she could utilize her Sword's full potential, [[CurbStompBattle Zagan would be dead.]] Fortunately, to do so a wielder must ''believe'' fully in their cause, and Chastille has doubts about the morality of killing someone who saved her life once. Volume 2 and beyond shows how capable can she be when not burdened.
%%* HopeBringer:
* HopelessSuitor: By Volume 5, she finally realizes that she has unrequited crush on Zagan. The fact that she knew he won't reciprocate eventually ends up with her forming PseudoRomanticFriendship with Nephteros after realizing just how Nephteros is surprisingly in a similar situation as Zagan, and not wanting to be unable to act on her feelings again.
* ImprobableAge: Deemed worthy of bearing a Holy Sword ''at 17''. In fact, it's stated she was initially granted the sword '''at 13'''.
* InternalReformist: In Volume 2, She vows to follow Raphael's wish for the Unification faction in bringing the Church and mages together into Orobas and stand against demons, and make the Church a better organization.
* IOweYouMyLife: Zagan saves her life, not knowing who she is, in the first chapter. [[ToBeLawfulOrGood She eventually realizes that she cannot both repay this debt and remain loyal to her masters.]]
* JustFollowingOrders: If she doesn't go through with assassinating a target, she could be tortured and executed by the Church. She tries to get around this by asking Zagan to fake his death, but he refuses.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Her conflict comes from her being a ''real'' paladin in an era where they're expected to be murderous, unquestioning figureheads for the people who are really in charge.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: While normally a crybaby, she is absolutely serious when on the job. The fact that the main characters never really sees her being serious before means that when they're trapped inside Nephy's hometown in Volume 4, she deems the situation serious enough to put on her game face for extended period of time, surprising everyone there, especially given that the others are starting to act a bit silly compared to her. The effect's toned down later on when the group's more used to this side of hers.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: An Archangel and one of the highest ranking members of the Church. Yet is also one of the most reasonable authoritative figures. She doesn't discriminate against mages, and has no qualms employing their service. As long as the mages do not use their powers to commit crimes or other terrible things, they are free to do as they please.
* RescueIntroduction: She's introduced when Zagan saves her from a sorcerer who was trying to assault her and steal her face.
* TheSheriff: Especially after the first couple of novels when she is the defacto highest ranking Church official and Knight in the area. It becomes her duty to protect the townsfolk and face off with the [[IOwnThisTown local 'evil' land baron Zagan.]] Because of their various adventures and the fact that [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Zagan means the best even if he doesn't always show it]], means that she is actually supportive of Zagan and helps him out with this various plans.
* SkilledButNaive: She's possibly one of the most powerful Archangel (as long as she can put her mind into it, see DramaPreservingHandicap) who could possibly even defeat Zagan as Archdemon, but she's hopelessly naive when it comes to trusting people and politics. It ends up with her being poisoned by Clavwell, since while she suspected him, she doesn't want to believe it.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: Among those who live in her territory, both in the church and the townsfolk, many have a lot of positive things to say about her. The major reasons being that she is a ReasonableAuthorityFigure who doesn't discriminate against mages and manages to keep the peace, and when she's on duty, she shows an aura of professionalism that makes people think of her as a trustworthy individual.
** Off course, her dignified appearance is mostly when she's doing work, and when she's alone, she's TheKlutz who can't even take care off herself.

[[folder:Kuroka Adelhide]]
A blind tabaxi priest who is revealed to be a Church assassin and secret Archangel. Wielder of the 13th sacred sword Azazel. She's also Raphael's adoptive daughter.
----
* BlindWeaponmaster: Her being blind doesn't reduce her combat capability in the slightest. This is later averted as Zagan has begun repairing her eyesight.
* DoomedHometown: Archdemon Shere Khan destroyed her hometown in his "Rare Species Hunts".
* FantasticRacism: Due to her upbringing by Raphael, she will not use her sword against people [[note]] Which is why she and Kuu are being threatened by slavers even though she should be able to handle herself easily, until Zagan intervenes[[/note]], however mages and Church traitors/mage collaborators doesn't count in her eyes, especially given that mages are responsible for her loss of sight. She starts toning this down after Raphael is revealed to be alive: while she's still wary of mages in general, she makes exceptions for Zagan and Nephteros.
* LittleBitBeastly: As a tabaxi, she has cat ears and 2 tails.
* MisplacedRetribution: Bifrons manipulated her into thinking that Chastille killed Raphael to get her to kill Chastille.
* UniformityException: Azazel is the only sword that is not a {{BFS}}, instead it takes form of a shortsword.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nephteros]]
A splitting image of Nephy, Nephteros is a dark elf who looks pretty much exactly like Nephy, but with darker skin, and wields the same power as her. Originally Bifrons' servant, she eventually escapes and ends up living with Chastille as her unofficial aide.
----
* AffectionateNickname: By Volume 6 she starts calling Zagan "Big Bro" since he's now her brother-in-law.
* DrivenByEnvy: She initially tries to kill Nephy due to being envious of how happy Nephy is with Zagan.
* GoodWithNumbers: After moving in with Chastille, she ends up becoming the Church branch's unofficial accountant and trying to keep the balance book in the black.
* OurHomunculiAreDifferent: Her nature as a clone means she's a homunculus. She cannot survive long without being supplied by mana regularly.
* SpotTheImposter: Her impersonation of Nephy would be perfect if not for the fact that Zagan is way more intimate about Nephy's subtle expressions that Nephteros doesn't know.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her regular outfit is a ''lot'' more revealing than Nephy's.
* SuperpowerLottery: Slightly {{Downplayed|Trope}}: She isn't as powerful in Celestial mysticism as Nephy due to her being Nephy's clone, the process that lowers her general power level, but she has a lot more experience. She's also a highly skilled mage, with power level just below that of Archdemons.
* {{Tsundere}}: She has problem expressing emotion and can becomes tsundere when confronted or just trying to convey her feelings. It's betrayed by her ExpressiveEars, however.
* WeakButSkilled: As a clone, she lacks the raw power of her sister and original, but she is a lot more skilled than her. To the point that she can infiltrate Zagan's home without him or anyone realizing it.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Shax]]
A mage specializing in healing magic currently working with the Church healing people to better relations between The Mages & The Order.
----
* OlderThanHeLooks: Due to a rather harsh tutelage under Shere Khan, Shax unkept appearance is similar to a late twenties, early thirties man. However, is apparently barely in his twenties
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Rachel]]
An apprentice nun and younger sister of Richard who serves as Chastille's maid.
----
* CanonImmigrant: her first debut and introduction was in the spin-off manga taking place between Volumes 3 and 4. Volume 15 has retconned things to pretend she was there the whole time, just out of view.
* ShipperOnDeck: for Barbatos/Chastille.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Michael Diekmeyer]]
One of the Archangels wielding the Zachariel sword.
----
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:He is also known as Andrealphus, the current head of the Archdemons.]]
[[/folder]]

!Archdemons
[[folder:Bifrons]]
The youngest Archdemon before Zagan with an unknown gender, heavily interested in study of Celestian. They're the one who instigate the attack on Nephy's village, partly setting the plot into motion.
----
* CruelMercy: After Zagan finally caught up with him in Volume 5, Zagan loads Heaven's Phosphor into Bifrons' heart and set it so that it would detonate if they try to interact with or even showing himself to Nephteros again. An extremely cruel mercy given how much he loved Nephteros, even if he didn't realize it himself.
* DemonicPossession: One of their favorite tactics is to posses people and use them to sow discord. Like when Biforns did this to Kuu until Zagan intervened.
* DoomedHometown: He's the one who razed Nephy's village in the attempt to capture her.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Due to be perpetually stuck in a child form and unable to mature physically, it is impossible to determine Bifrons' gender which is purposefully left "unknown" by the author.
* KidsAreCruel: {{Invoked}}, Bifrons is ''far'' older than they appear but their childish looks and incredibly cruel almost playful nature invoke this trope heavily.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Orias]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orias.png]]
One of the Senior Archdemons who plays a role in the Norden arc.
----
* AllForNothing: [[spoiler:Titania challenged the original Orias to secure a way to create a nation/refuge for her people the Elves. She was victorious in killing Orias, but it cost her ''everything''.]] So much so, she abandoned her goals.
* CelestialParagonsAndArchangels: [[spoiler:She is secretly an artisan for the Chivalric Order.]]
* DualAgeModes: As "Orias" she sometimes disguises herself as an older woman to help hide her identity.
* LegacyCharacter: [[spoiler:The current Orias is actually Titania, after she defeated original Orias and stole her identity.]]
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler:She turns out to be Nephy's mother, '''Titania''', which by extension makes her Nephteros' mother due to the latter being a clone of her daughter.]]
* SuperpowerLottery: Like her daughters, she's capable of wielding Celestial mysticism, a seasoned Archdemon-tier mage, and a Chivalric Order senior officer just to name a few jobs on her resume.
* WalkingSpoiler: Kinda hard to talk about her without spoiling everything.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: She locks up Zagan's group in Nephy's hometown and transform Nephy into a child in order for Nephy to not have a horrible childhood memory she has to endure and live happily.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Andrealphus]]
One of the Archdemons. There is more to his identity than assumed at first glance.
----
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Shere Khan]]
"The Tiger King", a wheelchair-bound Tigryn Archdemon and organizer of the "Rare Species Hunt". He is allied with Bifrons.
----
* HandicappedBadass: He was ''horribly'' crippled but is still one of the 2 (current) oldest Archdemons, so his power is enough to give even Bifrons pause.
* LittleBitBeastly: Shere Khan has traits of a "Tiger Man" esentially being an anthropomorphic Tiger.
* ShoutOut: His being an evil character who has tiger-like characteristics and is also named "Shere Khan" are obvious references to Shere Kahn, the BigBad of Creator/RudyardKipling's novel ''Literature/TheJungleBook''.
* StrangeSyntaxSpeaker: Due to his current weakened state, Shere Khan speaks very slowly with wheezing.
[[/folder]]
