''"No one has more love for soccer than Raimon's [[HotBlooded fiery]] [[TheCaptain captain!]]"''

* AdaptationDyeJob: In most of the manga covers made by Yabuno Tenya, he is drawn with green (sometimes cyan) eyes instead of brown like in the games and anime.
* AllLovingHero: Over the course of the series, he became good friends with almost everyone.
* ATasteOfPower: In universe during ''GO Chrono Stone''. [[spoiler: During the fight against Protocol Omega his multiple timeline selves are able to empower him to the point that he knows God Hand skills he has yet to even learn.]] Like Tenma he'll eventually won't be able to use those abilities till he learns to do them naturally as well.
* BadassesWearBandanas: He wears an orange headband and he becomes a legendary goalkeeper.
* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' use soccer with the intention of hurting others and don't even ''think'' about getting stronger in unnatural methods as opposed to getting stronger through training. In early episodes, the laziness and dismotivation of his teammates also piss him off.
* BettyAndVeronica: The Archie to Aki's Betty and Natsumi's Veronica. [[spoiler: He chooses Natsumi.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Despite being one of the nicest and happiest characters, nobody should mess with him or anything he loves ''EVER''.
* BigEater: More so in the original series, where he's often seen eating. It helps that his mother and most of the managers are excellent cooks. Less so in ''GO'', where he would rather ''not'' eat, due to [[spoiler:his wife Natsumi being a LethalChef.]]
* BlowYouAway / ShockAndAwe: [[spoiler: ''Thunder God and Wind God'' manifests two Majins made of wind and thunder.]]
** CastingAShadow: The hissatsu later evolves to Thunder God and Wind God Ghost, gaining a third Majin made of dark energy.
* BookDumb: According to an NPC in his neighborhood and one of his friend's comment, he's not very bright when it comes to school. It's implied his grandfather was one too, considering his terrible handwriting. But, aside from a few IdiotHero moments, he isn't exactly stupid and is a huge source of HeroicSpirit.
* TheCaptain / RedArmbandOfLeadership: He is the captain of several teams, most notably Raimon and Inazuma Japan.
* CasualSportsJersey: More so than everyone, because he wears a soccer jersey or tracksuit even in situations where most people wear casual clothes, which shows how much of a soccer freak he is.
* {{Catchphrase}}: The phrase he is best known for is "Sakka yarouze!", translated as "Let's play soccer!".
* ChallengeSeeker: He always wishes to face even stronger opponents and bigger challenges.
* ChasteHero: He's too interested in soccer to recognize a LoveConfession, as seen at the end of the third game where you have a choice to talk to one of the managers sans Haruna. If you choose Natsumi, a cutscene occurs where Endou asks her why she went through all that trouble, to which she answers that she did it out of love. He jumps at the conclusion that his love for soccer has rubbed off on her. Averted in [[spoiler:Inazuma Eleven Go, which reveals he married Natsumi.]]
* CheerfulChild: He is usually cheerful and sunny and is described as being pure and innocent like a child.
* ChickMagnet: It tells something when every main girl except Haruna and Rika gets ShipTease with him and at least three of them have canon crushes on him.
** CluelessChickMagnet: But he doesn't seem to realize that they have feelings for him, not even when giving him obvious clues.
* ChildhoodFriends: Him and Kazemaru are stated to be in the latter's game profile. One of Hino Akihiro's interviews reveals they went to the same elementary school. So did Fuyuka, but only in the first grade.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: [[spoiler:With Fuyuka in the Dark version of the GO game. However, this is not considered the OfficialCouple, because it's canon in only one universe, Fuyuka being the UnluckyChildhoodFriend in the rest versions.]]
* CrutchCharacter: Because the rest of Inazuma Japan relied too much on his support and Kidou's strategies, they were forced to push themselves too much to cover for their absence and use their own abilities to overcome the situation during the match against The Empire. Although they started to work better and level up after Hiroto took the lead, they eventually lost because it was a bit too late.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Brown hair and brown eyes.
* [[DeceasedParentsAreTheBest Deceased Grandparents Are The Best]]: He shows great admiration towards his grandfather, Daisuke, and studies the technique notebooks that he wrote many years ago. [[spoiler: The deceased part is subverted, since he turns out to be alive.]]
* {{Determinator}}: The best example in the show.
* DishingOutDirt: His primary attribute in the game is earth. This is mainly seen through the colour of his majin, which is golden. In the anime, on the other hand, this is mostly averted, except for "Hammer of Wrath", whose final pose involves both him and his majin slamming the ball with their fists as a hammer, creating a hole on the ground.
* DistressedDude:
** Seemingly becomes this after he was captured by Beta in ''Chrono Stone''.
** Once again he becomes this in the Inazuma Eleven Go crossover movie with ''VideoGame/LBXLittleBattlersExperience W'', as he later will be imprisoned by the LBX.
* DubNameChange: Aside from the English dub, the Latin American and Brazilian dubs (which mostly avert this trope) have his first name changed to Satoru because Mamoru sounds similar to a slang for oral sex in their language.
* ElementalEyeColors: His eyes are brown and his main attribute is earth.
** ElementalHairColors: [[CurtainsMatchTheWindow So is his hair.]]
* EveryoneHatesMath: He's not good with math and seems to dislike the idea of doing homework in general.
* FightingSpirit: How his "Majin The Hand" Manifests. [[spoiler: In ''The Scales of Ares'', ''Thunder God, Wind God'' gives him two.]]
* FiveTemperamentEnsemble: The sanguine, for being the most cheerful and optimistic of the All-Stars.
* FollowingInRelativesFootsteps: He wants to become a legendary goalkeeper like his grandfather Daisuke.
* FromHeroToMentor: In the first trilogy, he's the main protagonist and the captain of Raimon Jr. High's soccer team. In ''GO'', he becomes a coach for the new Raimon team.
* GracefulLoser: Even if he loses, he still isn't disappointed at his defeat. If anything, that's what motivates him to get stronger for the next match.
* GraduateFromTheStory: Along with most of Raimon's members at the end of the original series. Naturally, everybody was seen crying when he received his diploma.
* GratuitousEnglish: Played with his hissatsu techniques, whose names are usually either partially Englih and partially Japanese or are entirely in Japanese. He does have a few hissatsus whose names are entirely in English, like God Hand and God Catch. Aside from that, he can say "Sakka" "Don't mind!" and "Thank you!"
* HappilyMarried: With Natsumi in the anime, manga and Light version of the GO game, but with Fuyuka in the Dark version of the GO game.
* HeroicBSOD: The anime gives him two counts of this.
** First is when he fails to stop Kidokawa's Triangle Z technique even with God Hand (his strongest technique back then), which makes him realize God Hand is not enough to stop Zeus' shots. This puts him into a state of depression, but gets over it fairly quickly.
** Second is during the second season, which was triggered by three things, two which he blames himself for: his new friend Hiroto being one of the "aliens", Fubuki's injury, and Kazemaru leaving the team. He spends almost an entire epidode in a depressive state.
* HeroicSacrifice: In ''Chrono Stone'' he stalls Protocol Omega so that the new Raimon can escape, and gets captured.
* HeroicSpirit: He has been knocked down many times by powerful shoots, and even when other people wouldn't have been able to stand, he struggles so that his team can continue to play and win the match.
* HotBlooded: He's passionate and fiery, especially in the manga, where he is even more hot-headed and emotional compared to the anime and game.
* HotBloodedSideburns: He looks like he has these, with two long locks of hair, one hanging down each side of his head in front of his ears, each one curving forward a bit before ending in a spike. [[SubvertedTrope They're not exactly sideburns, since they flap around a lot when he moves.]]
* IconicItem: His orange headband, which he considers his trademark.
* IdenticalGrandson: He looks identical to his grandfather when his grandfather was young.
* IdiotHero: He isn't a complete idiot, but he is BookDumb, ObliviousToLove, a bit impulsive, and doesn't seem to know the definition of certain things. He also tends to forget he's the only one who can read [[TheIllegible Daisuke's]] writing.
* ImageSong: ''Mammote Miseru! / I’ll Protect It!''.
* ImprovisedTraining: Usually practices by punching a tire tied to a tree, but sometimes, like when he was trying to master Majin The Hand, he does something different.
* InSeriesNickname: He has three titles: "Legendary Goalkeeper", "Legendary Captain", and "Hot-blooded Guardian Deity".
* IronicName: His English first name is Mark, which describes the opposite of his Goalkeeper position.
* JackOfAllStats: While defaulting as the goal keep, Endou's Level 1 stats in the first game pretty much guarantee he'll be better than anyone else wherever you put him. The second game [[{{Nerf}} "corrects"]] this. His maximum stats are the same, but their growth patterns are changed so some of them remain relatively low until he reaches a very high level.
* [[HighSchoolSweethearts Junior High Sweethearts]]: He officially ends up with Natsumi, whom he met in middle school.
* {{Keet}}: He's always happy and energetic. His personality attracts many people, even if they're an enemy or an ally.
* KidHero: He's a middle school student, like anyone else. Justified since most of the rivals are the same age and the {{Non Action BigBad}}s are usually left on the adults' hands.
* KidHeroAllGrownUp: In ''GO'', he's now a young adult.
* KindHeartedSimpleton: He is not the most book-smart character, but his kindness is unmeasurable.
%%* LargeHam
* LiteralMinded: When Natsumi called him a "noteworthy horse", he took it literally and thought she called him a horse, resulting in them arguing.
* MadeOfIron: He stands up after taking multiple blows from techniques that land other characters in the hospital for extended periods of time. He's either this, or he's borrowing the HealingFactor of a [[{{Manga/Naruto}} certain other character he shares a voice actor with.]]
* MeaningfulName / PunnyName: His full name is a pun on "endo o mamoru", which means to protect the end ("end" in the soccer jargon sense). It signifies his status as a talented goalkeeper.
* MegatonPunch: After becoming a libero, he learns a technique named Megaton Head, which summons a giant golden hand above his head, which converts into a fist. While it's usually a defensive technique, he can use it for offense as well, as seen in the match against Chaos, and it's seen to be powerful as it helped his team score.
* MundaneUtility: One of the omake yonkoma in the ''Inazuma Eleven Special'' manga has him using his technique God Hand to swat a fly, and again in a game of RockPaperScissors to throw a ''really'' big "paper".
* MyFutureSelfAndMe: The EndgamePlus of the ''GO'' game allows you to recruit the story characters from the previous games, which can result in Endou being coached by his adult self.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: His English dub name, Mark Evans, is shared with a real former English goalkeeper.
* NiceGuy: He always thinks of others before himself and helps them when they need. His teammates benefit from his amazing mental strength and encouragement.
* NonchalantDodge: In ''GO'', when a peeved Tsurugi tries to shoot at him.
* NotAMorningPerson: He does wake up, he just doesn't wake up early since he likes to sleep. However, in the third season, due to playing in the FFI, he stops sleeping too much and starts to wake up very early to practice.
* NotDistractedByTheSexy:
** Waitresses at a [[CosplayCafe maid cafe]] are fawning over him? They have nothing to do with soccer, and are therefore boring.
** When Fuyuka was trying to help him get some ideas for a new hissatsu, one of Rika's tips was to try some new clothes and show them off. At the same time, Kabeyama and Kurimatsu were spying on them. The latter two blushed when they saw Fuyuka trying on different outfits, but Endou didn't.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: He points out that he and Kidou are the same because both of them were inspired to play soccer because of a deceased family member (grandfather and parents respectively) and their keepsakes (notebooks and soccer magazine), although he didn't know that his grandfather was only FakingTheDead.
* ObliviousToLove: Three girls have feelings for him and he doesn't notice. One of the most glaring examples is the episode when [[ShipperOnDeck Rika]] planned a date for fim and Fuyuka, who wanted to help Endou get some ideas for a new hissatsu, by tricking her into following some "tips". Despite the obvious hints that it looked like a date and every boy that spied on them [[EveryoneCanSeeIt could tell so]],their planned date bacfired because Endou was very clueless about it.
* OfficialCouple: He is officially married to Natsumi but an alternate continuity can have him end up with Fuyuka instead.
** Another alternate continuity can have him married to Natsumi, Fuyuka and Aki ''at the same time''.
* OlderAndWiser: Ten years later in ''GO''.
* OneSteveLimit: In the English dub his first name is the same as Mark Krugger's first name since they didn't change the latter's name.
* OppositesAttract: He marries [[{{Ojou}} Natsumi]], who is at first against the soccer club, but later starts to appreciate it, while he's a soccer freak from start to finish.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** When he heard that his grandfather was killed by Kageyama, he became emotional in the manga (more so than in the anime) to the point where some people are doubting whether he's Endou or not. But he tried to hide his sadness from his teammates when one of them said that this kind of captain wouldn't win the match.
** Also, you know he has a ''really'' bad HeroicBSOD (which is OOC itself) when he stops touching a ball or eating, despite the fact that he loves doing these things.
* PerpetualSmiler: Unless his BerserkButton is pushed or he has a HeroicBSOD, he's this.
* PinkGirlBlueBoy: If we talk about their school uniforms, he's the blue boy to Natsumi's pink girl.
* PlayingWithFire: Nekketsu Punch or Fireball Knuckle, which involves him punching the ball repeatedly with fiery fists.
* [[PluckyGirl Plucky Boy]]: Opponents are time and time again confused how he gets excited rather than disheartened in seeing strong rivals.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: When it looks like they're going to lose, he gives a speech about friendship, which motivates anyone to continue, which is why they always win something stronger at the last minute.
* PowerOfTheGodHand: Mamoru Endō has a special technique known as "God Hand" which creates a giant hand out of his energy. Naturally, he primarily plays as goaltender, the one position allowed to use their hands.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: Nekketsu Punch and Bakuretu Punch: Endou punches the ball repeatedly to stop it. He usually uses them when the upcomming shoot is too fast and doesn't have enough time to use God Hand.
* RedOniBlueOni: Pretty much everybody he has a close relationship with is the blue oni to his passionate, exuberant red oni.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Aki describes him as similar to Ichinose, her childhood friend who loved soccer as much as him, but after he led her to believe he died in an accident, she couldn't touch a soccer ball anymore, until she met Endou. Though the real Ichinose joins the team later.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Inverted. He's the [[{{Keet}} energetic guy]] to Natsumi's savvy girl.
* ShipTease:
** Endou and Aki get a lot of ship tease, mostly in the second season. The third season tones it down and they both get ship tease with someone else.
** The ship tease beetween him and Natsumi grows with which season, all the way to OfficialCouple by the time of ''GO''.
** Endou and Fuyuka also get a fair share of it in the 3rd season and there are quite a few episodes centered around them.
** He gets some with Touko, too, although most of it is just her trying to mess with Aki and Natsumi.
* SignificantBirthDate: His birthday is on August 22, the date when the first game was released.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: In ''Orion''. Even though he's supposed to be a secondary character in that series, he still gets a lot of screentime compared to other characters, both new and old. Even more so compared to the other goalkeepers, being the most used one by far.
* StockShonenHero: He displays many of the traits, such as determination, hot-bloodedness, desire to be the best in Japan and later the world, hamminess, big appetite and overcomes the obstacles through ThePowerOfFriendship.
* SupportingProtagonist: Becomes this during the Aliea Academy arc, as he takes a backseat for Fubuki. While he still plays an important role with his relationship with Gran and Kazemaru, most of the season's CharacterDevelopment happens to Fubuki, while Endou and the rest of Raimon supports him.
* TearsOfJoy: He sheds these from time to time, like after his friends [[spoiler:got released from the effects of the Aliea crystals]] for example.
* TroubledFetalPosition: He sits on the roof in this position during his HeroicBSOD from season 2.
* TrueCompanions: The center of it, of course.
* [[TurnOutLikeHisFather Turn Out Like His Grandfather]]: His mom disapproves of him playing soccer because she thinks it's what killed her dad.
** [[spoiler:Interestingly this really happened in ''Chrono Stone'', after he was captured a time paradox happened where he was considered died in a car accident in the current timeline, just like his grandfather.]]
* UnderdogsNeverLose: His team is always an underdog team and they always narrowly win something stronger at the last minute through the PowerOfFriendship.
* VibrantOrange: He wears an orange headband and most of his goalkeeper uniforms contain some orange. He is the definition of optimistic soccer freak.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: According to Hiroto:
-->'''Hiroto''': ''I'm in love, Endou-kun, with those eyes of yours!''
* WideEyedIdealist: He tried to keep his optimism even in the second season, despite the fact that the world has become somewhat of a CrapsackWorld, and believed they could clear any challenge anywhere, without thinking the bad guys could win sometimes (which they did) and without noticing that not everybody is as optimistic and confident as him. Only after Kazemaru left the team he realized the truth and got a HeroicBSOD as a result.
* TheWorfEffect: The entire team gets hit with this in the second season, when they show how strong the bad guys are by defeating them with 20:0 or more. And this is the same team that didn't lose any matches in the Football Frontier Nationals.

''"Beneath this [[TheAce ace striker's]] cool exterior burns a fiery passion for soccer."''

* TheAce: He's called the ace striker for a reason.
** BrokenAce: Gouenji was a talented soccer player ever since he was young and his parents always came to his matches and supported him. However, after his mother's death, his father became less supportive and preferred him to become a doctor rather than play soccer, an issue they have been arguing about ever since. One year before the start of the series, his sister became the victim of a car accident and was in a coma ever since, something he blames himself for. Because of that, he kept an amulet made by Yuuka and swore that until she wakes up, he'll stop playing soccer.
* AloofAlly: At first, he wasn't really interested in joining the club due to his sister's accident, until Endou and Natsumi snap him out of this. He is a downplayed example after that because he doesn't have problems working with his teammates, but he tends to keep personal problems that may influence the team to himself.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: His hair is shaped like the flames, as his element is [[PlayingwithFire fire]].
* BigBad: [[spoiler:He is Ishido Shuuji, the Holy Emperor in ''GO''.]]
** TheDragon: [[spoiler:Except he isn't the BigBad. That's actually Senguuji and Ishido is his subaltern. However, he only joined Fifth Sector to stop him from destroying soccer.]]
* BigBrotherInstinct: He cares deeply for his sister and would do anything for her, as seen when Aliea Academy took her hostage and threatended to hurt her if he scores in the second match against Gemini Storm, so he missed the goal intentionally and was dropped of the team as a result.
* TheBigGuy: He is this for TheTeam, for being the one with the most strenght and the strictest forward, as opposed to the other All-Stars who can play more than one position. However, he also has shades of TheLancer (see below), with Someoka and Kabeyama being the {{Big Guy}}s of the team as a whole.
* BlackCloak: Wears a hooded black cloak in the first episode of ''GO''.
* BrokenPedestal: He saved Tenma's life with a soccer ball when the latter was young, which is how Tenma's love for soccer started. He realizes Ishido Shuuji is Gouenji right after a heated argument about why he wants to control soccer. [[RebuiltPedestal They are on good terms with each other]] after Gouenji ditches his Ishido persona, though.
* BrutalHonesty: Not often, but he has no problem telling exactly what he thinks, even if it's mean.
* TheCaptain / RedArmbandOfLeadership: He was Kidokawa's captain before the start of the series.
* ContinuityNod: After his training in Okinawa, he stays tan in subsequent cutscenes in-game.
* CustomUniform: He raises the collar to any soccer uniform that has one. He also wears orange socks instead of white like most members.
* DishingOutDirt: Last Resort showcases a dragon made of earth.
* DontSaySuchStupidThings: After Fubuki tells him that his ideal of perfection means being with Atsuya, due to misunderstanding what his father said before he died, Gouenji tells him that he shouldn't misunderstand what he really needs and leaves him in the rain.
* [[DotingParent Doting Brother]]: Before going on their mission to Defeat Aliea Academy, Gouenji visits his sister in the hospital to give her a big teddy bear and says she can think of the bear as him in his absence. And during Inazuma Japan's dayoff, he buys a big stuffed turtle for her.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: In the beginning of Orion, he manages to create Last Resort, a shoot so strong that even [[OneManArmy Clario]] feels threatened by it. So naturally, he is injured in the first match and don't come back until the semi-finals against Italia.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: In the first two games, he had normal-shaped eyebrows which were coloured black. In the anime, he has lightning-shaped eyebrows which match his hair colour. The third game and all subsequent games use his anime design.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: His appearance changed several times, including his hairstyle. As a teenager, he has white spiky hair. In ''GO'', [[spoiler:as [[FaceHeelTurn Ishido Shuuji]]]], his spiky hair is straightened down, slightly darker and has dyed blue highlights in it. [[spoiler:After he ditches his [[FakeDefector fake evil disguise]]]], he removes his highlights and instead wears his hair in a short ponytail. In the crossover movie with ''VideoGame/LBXLittleBattlersExperience'', he changes back to his appearance as a teenager. In ''Galaxy'', his hairstyle looks similar like to the one he sports in the first season of ''GO'', but a bit shorter and without highlights.
* EyeDentityGiveaway: The fact that he's Ishido Shuuji's real identity is foreshadowed by the similar, if not identical eyes.
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:In GO, he became the second-in-command to the Holly Emperor, who tries to regulate all matches in the Holly Road tournament.]]
** FakeDefector: [[spoiler:Except he didn't really turn heel, he just acted that way to convince Senguuji. It was revealed in the Dragonlink match that Gouenji only joined the Holy Emperor's side to stop Senguuji from destroying soccer.]]
* FamilyEyeResemblance: Shuuya, Yuuka, and their parents don't look too much alike, but they all have similar sharp, black eyes.
* FieryStoic: He isn't your standard hot-blooded fire-elemental, but [[TheStoic the opposite]].
* FireIceDuo: Crossfire combines his fire with Fubuki's ice.
* FiveTemperamentEnsemble: The melancholic, for being a serious guy who doesn't smile or emote too much and overall the one with the most issues, which he usually keeps for himself.
* {{Foil}}: Gouenji is TheLancer to Endou's hero. He's a striker, while Endou is a goalkeeper. He's calm, serious, and doesn't talk about his emotions, while the latter is very emotional and cheerful.
* ForeheadOfDoom: Downplayed. His forehead is fairly prominent, mostly due to his hairstyle, but not that oversized.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: When one of his teammates isn't doing well, he kicks the soccer ball on fire hard at him.
* GoodAllAlong: At first, Ishido acted like he supported the idea of soccer being managed, but in the end it's revealed that he became the Holy Emperor keep an eye on Senguuji's plans and to bring back real soccer.
* ImageSong: ''Honoo no Riyuu / The Reason For Flames''.
* ImplausibleHairColour: He has very light blond hair in a shade that is rather uncommon in real life, let alone in Japan. This is coupled with slightly dark skin.
* ImprobableAge: In ''GO'', he's [[spoiler:TheDragon of an extremely powerful organization controlling youth soccer over ''all of Japan'']] at just 24.
* InTheHood: During the time he was hiding in Okinawa from some strange guys who wanted to harm his sister, he was concealing his appearance with an orange and blue hood and revealed himself to Raimon to help them defeat Epsilon Kai.
* JackOfAllStats: Like Endou, his starting stats in the first game are perfectly flat.
* JustHereForGodzilla: InUniverse example. In the early episodes, before Raimon entered the Football Frontier, several schools like Teikoku and Occult challenged their team to a match only because they were interested in Gouenji's strength rather than the whole team, which was considered weak. {{Discussed}} when Occult's coach angers Someoka with this very statement.
* TheLancer: Unlike [[TheHero Endou]], who is a HotBlooded, [[{{Keet}} energetic]] and optimistic, [[WideEyedIdealist if not too much]], goalkeeper, Gouenji is a calm and serious striker with a SugarAndIcePersonality. He's also one of his closest friends and gets the most screentime in the first season besides him.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: His hair is pretty long when straightened down and arguably looks better this way.
* MeaningfulName: The second kanji in his family name means "flame", while his English surname is Blaze. His element is fire.
* MissingMom: In the 3rd season, his mom is revealed to be dead, although they didn't reveal how she died. This is the reason why his father became more grumpy less supportive about him playing soccer, instead wanting him to become a doctor like him.
* MistakenForRomance:
** In the 23rd chapter of his spin-off manga, Kidou thinks Gouenji and Haruna are dating because he overhears Haruna asking Gouenji if he wants to hang out with her. In reality, she wanted Gouenji to help her make good cakes as a gift for her brother.
** In chapter 46 of the same manga, the Mukata triplets think [[DudeLooksLikeALady Aphrodi]] is his girlfriend. They become jealous.
* TheMole: In GO, he joined Fifth Sector in order to start a revolution against their managed soccer from the inside.
* NewTransferStudent: In the first episode, he's introduced as a student who transferred from Kidokawa to Raimon. He comes back to Kidokawa in ''Ares no Tenbin'' as part of the reinforcement committee project, but by the end of ''Orion'', he's back to Raimon again.
* OverratedAndUnderleveled: After all the hype, he joins at a lower level and with lower base stats than [[JackOfAllStats Endou]]. Justified in that he hasn't played in a year, but still.
* TheParagon: He is a source of inspiration to many others players in the franchise like Fubuki,Toramaru,Tsurugi or Kozoumaru.
* PlayingWithFire: He has fire based hissatsus. Most notable are Fire Tornado, Bakunetsu Storm and Bakunetsu Screw.
* PrettyBoy: In ''GO''. He was not a slouch to begin with, but his hair smoothens his features when it's worn flat. He has a very flashy appearance in the first season that is commented on by a girl from his spin-off manga, who also thinks that he looks like a model.
* PutOnABus: After the match against Gemini Storm, he gets dropped of the team for getting distracted and missing the goal. At first, Endou and the others were surprised about him leaving the team without any explication, but after coming back, he reveals it was for his sister's sake. Ditto in Orion, when he is injured in the first match and don't come back until the semi-final against Italia.
** TheBusCameBack: After his training in Okinawa and after watching Raimon's matches against Oumihara and Epsilon Kai InTheHood, he joins at the last minute in the latter match to help his team win and after that he reveals why he left the team in the first place.
* TheQuietOne: He's usually calm and only speaks when necessary.
* RedBaron: For a short time in the second season he's known as "The Flame Striker". He's called "The Flame Striker" in ''Ares'' as well.
* RedOniBlueOni: The stoic blue oni to Endou's passionate red oni.
* RefusalOfTheCall: In the first few episodes. At first he refused Endou's offer to join the soccer club because his sister got involved in a car accident in the same day his team was going to have a match against Teikoku and swore that he won't play soccer anymore until she wakes up. He helped Raimon score in the practice match with Teikoku, but still didn't really accept his offer and didn't reveal his reasons until the 3rd episode. However, after Endou and Natsumi told him that his sister would have wanted him to play soccer the most, he regains his passion for the game and joins the club permanently.
* RippleEffectProofMemory: In ''Chrono Stone'', his memory isn't affected by the change in the temporal plane when Protocol Omega erase soccer thanks to a Time Bracelet, just like Yuuichi.
* ShonenHair: He has spiky hair which defies gravity. Ironically, it's TheStoic [[TheLancer lancer]] that has this rather than the HotBlooded [[TheHero hero]].
* SiblingYinYang: Shuuya is calm, serious and rather depressive, while Yuuka is cheerful, energetic and happy. This can be justified with Yuuka being a kid, her teenage version in the ''GO'' series is more calm and responsible, though still more cheerful than him.
* SignificantAnagram: His alias as Holy Emperor in the dub of ''GO'', "Alex Zabel".
* SpikyHair: His hair isn't naturally spiky, so he uses hair wax to style his hair like this as a teenager. As an adult, he usually leaves his hair straight, but he does spike it up in the crossover movie with VideoGame/LBXLittleBattlersExperience.
* SpinAttack: Fire Tornado, which involves getting high in the air in a spinning motion before kicking the ball towards the goal, is actually the first hissatsu Raimon scored with and won with ever.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Justified as he was the only one with real skill early on in the series. Less so when every single combination hissatsu except two [[note]]Twin Boost and The Tri-Pegasus, three if you count its evolved form, The Phoenix[[/note]] involve him in Season 1.
* StealthMentor: In ''GO'', he joined Fifth Sector to bring back real soccer and he secretly wants Raimon to win the tournament, but he has to make it look like he wants all middle school soccer matches to be managed.
* TheStoic: He's usually calm and serious in most situations.
** NotSoStoic: Gouenji is an interesting combination of stoic and not so stoic. Usually, even when he smiles or he's angry, he's still not particularly high in emotions. For instance, when somebody is struggling, he kicks the soccer ball on fire at him and gives him a forceful lecture without lashing out too much anger at him.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He's cold and serious on the outside, but he cares deeply for his sister and all his teammates and he has a strong passion for soccer.
* SuperRinger: During the practice match with Teikoku, after Megane runs away and takes off his shirt, Gouenji steps in and helps his team score with Fire Tornado. There are quite a few times in the series when he shows up at the right time to score against a difficult opponent.
* SupremeChef: He is very good at cooking, which is showcased several times in the franchise. At the training camp in episode 24, Haruna notes Gouenji's skills as a chef when she sees him peeling potatoes and he also mentions that he cooks for his sister. In the Drama CD, he reveals that he makes excellent takoyaki. In the spin-off manga that depicts his casual life shows he can also make good sandwiches and cakes.
* TearsOfJoy: After they win the Football Frontier, he visits his sister in the hospital to tell her that they have won, and seeing that she has opened her eyes, he repeats what he has said with tears in his eyes.
* TragicKeepsake: Before Kidokawa's match against Teikoku would have taken place and before Yuuka became the victim of a car accident, she gave him an amulet, which became really important to him after said accident. DownplayedTrope, since his sister isn't dead, just in a coma.
* TroubledButCute: More emphasis on the "troubled part". He has a rather troubled past and a lot of issues he has to deal with, he acts rather aloof and mysteryous in the first episodes and he has his fair share of fangirls.
* TsurimeEyes: He has sharp eyes, fitting his serious and mysterious personality.
* UnflinchingWalk: During the match against Epsilon [[spoiler:Kai]], he scores with Bakuretsu Storm as Desarm prepares to use Drill Smasher. Then, Gouenji casually looks back as Desarm is overwhelmed by it.
* UnusualEyebrows: Zig-zag eyebrows.
* WarriorTherapist: [[spoiler:When Kidou feels distraught and uncertain after his team is defeated by Zeus, mainly because he couldn't help his teammates due to still being injured]], Gouenji tries to snap him out of this state by passing a soccer ball back and forth with him.
* TheWorfEffect: Played straight given his status as the Ace, showing that a goalkeeper can stop his shoots means serious business (E.G. Gemini Storm or Little Gigant). However, this is averted as he usually scores whenever he shoots, be it with a combination shoot or not, and his opponent are aware of his status as TheAce so they are on guard when they are against him.
* WellDoneSonGuy: He wants to please his FantasyForbiddingFather who wants him to become a doctor, but he also doesn't want to disappoint his friends. In the third season, he makes a deal with his father to leave soccer and go to Germany to become a doctor, as long as he lets him play in the FFI preliminary finals match in the order to send his teammates to the world. But after they win the match, his father realizes that his teammates still need him and lets him stay in the team.
* WhatTheHellHero: [[spoiler:Endou was understandably not pleased when he found out about his involvement with Fifth Sector. That was until he figures out Ishido's true intentions. Tenma also calls him out for trying to manage soccer.]]
* ZeroApprovalGambit: In GO, he gave up his seat on Japan's national team and became the Holy Emperor to bring back real soccer. Goes in line with his BigBad [[TheDragon Dragon]] and FakeDefector.

''"A talented [[TheStrategist game maker]], his skills and his strategies are unbeatable."''

* AcademicAthlete: He manages to be a top soccer player (at least until Raimon defeat him) and student (getting 100 points on his English and Math tests and 90 on his Japanese one in episode 9) both at the same time.
* TheAce: Mostly when he was part of Teikoku, due to being part of the strongest soccer team in Japan that was the champion for 40 years and continued the team's win streak until Raimon defeated them. Still counts if you consider his play-making.
** BrokenAce: When Kidou and Haruna were young, they lost their parents in a plane crash and grew up in an orphanage until they were adopted by different families. Because of that, he made a deal with his stepfather to win three consecutive national championships in order to bring his sister back and was even in the danger of leaving his current family if he loses in a district match, so he was bound to be perfect. Fortunately, his father gets better.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Asada Miho's ongoing manga, "[=HonoSuto=]! ~Gouenji no Hitorigoto~", has two chapters from his point of view instead of Gouenji's.
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: He's smart and cute when it comes to strategy on and off the field.
* AlternateCharacterReading: The two kanji for "Kidou" (鬼道) can be also read as "oni", which means "demon" and "michi", which means "path". This fact is later used for his EvilCounterpart, Demonio Strada, whose name means "demon path" in Italian.
* AnimalBattleAura: Penguins. He knows several penguin-related hissatsus, such as Emperor Penguin No 2 and 3.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: He’s often the first one to figure out the opponent's strategy and learns from different rivals and coaches most notably in season 2.
* BadassBookworm: Not only is he one of the best players, he’s also one of the most analytical in the whole series.
* BadassCape: He wears a cape with ''all'' his soccer uniforms and he always looks cool.
* BadassLongcoat: In ''GO'', he wears a black longcoat.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Due to being separated from his sister, he accepted everything in order to live together again, including winning three consecutive national championships and even not contacting her for six years. This lead her to believe she's in his way and he doesn't love her anymore, without knowing that he did it for her sake and he didn't actually forget her. Also, in a flashback he's shown fighting with some kids who bullied Haruna and he became very angry when she got captured by the dark angels, who were going to offer her as a sacrifice to the Demon Lord.
* BigFancyHouse: Endou was surprised when he saw how big his house and especially his room are.
* BlackAndNerdy: The dreads point to him being at least partly black, and, as the rest of this page shows, he's very smart.
* BlueIsHeroic: His GoodCostumeSwitch involves changing his red cape with a blue one.
* BrainyBrunette: He has brown hair and he's TheSmartGuy and TheStrategist.
* BreakoutCharacter: He started off as a relatively minor character when he was part of Teikoku, but he became one of the main characters after his HeelFaceTurn and after he transferred to Raimon.
* TheCaptain / RedArmbandOfLeadership: Of Teikoku. Also of Inazuma Japan in season 3, whenever Endou is benched. The armband isn't seen because his cape covers his arms.
* CastingAShadow: In the manga, he uses Dark Tornado against Gouenji's Fire Tornado when they meet outside of matches.
* ChildProdigy: He had a talent for soccer even when he was 6.
* CrutchCharacter: Because the rest of Inazuma Japan relied too much on his strategies and Endou's emotional support, when they (together with Sakuma and Fudou) couldn't play in the match against The Empire (no thanks to Kageyama), they had a hard time adapting. Despite getting better at playing without their captain and strategist, they lost in the end.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: The only thing about his parents he still has and the only bond that connects him to his father is an old soccer magazine. That's why he started to play soccer, because when he kicks the ball he feels as if he is with his father.
* TheDragon: First and one of Kageyama's many underlings, until his HeelFaceTurn.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Despite having no problem hurting other teams and destroying schools and despite being loyal to Kageyama, he disapproves of his plotting for the murder of the opposing team and in the match for the district national finals against Raimon, he checks the school to make sure he didn't set any traps. This is what caused him and the rest of Teikoku to eventually pull a HeelFaceTurn.
* EvilGenius: At first, he was the strategist of the rival team Teikoku who was not above commanding the others to play violently. He has always been a good student as well.
* EyesOutOfSight: His eyes are usually hidden behind his goggles, but they can sometimes be spotted through them. When he was younger, he didn't wear goggles. The only moment he takes them off at present is after the match against Orpheus.
* FiveTemperamentEnsemble: The Choleric. He has leadership skills. While usually composed, he is prone to holding grudges.
* GogglesDoNothing: Subverted. It's revealed that the goggles help him focus on where the ball is and where it will land at all times.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: If the Japanese version of the ''WesternAnimation/DespicableMe1'' trailer is anything to go by, his goggles can function as 3D glasses.
* GoodCostumeSwitch: He switches his red cape with a blue one when he joins Raimon. However, he wears a red cape again in season 3, despite not changing sides.
* HopelessBossFight: First of many. He is the captain of the first opponent ever faced by Raimon and they can't be defeated in the game because the plot requires so. They still end up losing because of his decision to forfeit the match after they achieve their goal.
* HeelFaceTurn: Along with the rest of Teikoku, he left Kageyama's side after he realised what a person he is.
* HeroicBSOD: After Teikoku lose to Zeus in the Football Frontier tournament. Because Kidou hasn't fully recovered from their confrontation with Raimon, he could do nothing but watch his teammates get crushed one by one in a single half. He nearly loses his passion for soccer completely after the experience, but Gouenji's challenge gets him back on his feet.
* IconicItem: Not one, but ''two'' items: his cape and his goggles. Lampshaded by himself in the goggles' case when he states that he'll continue to wear them because they're his trademark.
* ImageSong: ''Hitomi no Naka no Shouri'' / ''The Victory in My Eyes''.
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: Wearing ''cape'' to play football.
* InSeriesNickname: His Raimon title is "Genius Game Maker". His Seishou and Inazuma Japan title is "Absolute Leader of the Pitch".
* InvincibleVillain: First of many. His team was basically unbeatable, as they continued to win for 40 years without a single loss in the Football Frontier and continued this tradition even when Kidou took the lead. In the first episode, they're shown destroying an unknown school after winning by 13-0 over them and during the "friendly" match against Raimon, they scored 10 goals in the first half ''without using any hissatsus'' and other 10 goals in the second half. The only reason why they lost was because they forfeited the match after Gouenji scored against them, since he was the only reason why they had the match in the first place.
* JackOfAllStats: In the first game.
* KidsAreCruel: At first, Kidou and the other Teikoku kids had no problem throwing the ball at the opposing players and their EstablishingCharacterMoment has Kidou ordering them to destroy an unknown school, but they get better after they realise it was a mistake to follow Kageyama's orders.
* {{Leitmotif}}: A militaresque-like tune which is heard whenever Teikoku make their entrance. Naturally, he loses this tune after he leaves Teikoku.
* LonelyRichKid: While he is close with his Teikoku teammates, he seems mostly detached at home. Possibly because he's adopted.
** HappilyAdopted: He does become this later on, because even if he doesn't reunite with his sister Haruna to live under the same roof, they're content with their new families.
* MasterOfIllusion: Illusion Ball lets him screw with his opponent's mind by creating fake copies of the ball orbiting around him.
* MissingMom: His father is seen, but a mother is never seen or mentioned. Maybe that's because [[spoiler: his real parents died in a plane crash when he was young]] and his [[spoiler: adoptive]]father possibly isn't married.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Implied by Genda, who says that one of Kidou's flaws is that he can be too frantic regarding the idea of his sister getting a boyfriend. It's also downplayed since he accepts Gouenji being Haruna's boyfriend (before finding out they aren't dating), but it still takes him a lot of stalking to convince himself he is worthy for Haruna.
* NewTransferStudent: He transferred to Raimon after he left Teikoku to avenge his defeated teammates.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: He somewhat resembles [[http://www.google.com.co/search?tbm=isch&hl=es&source=hp&biw=1024&bih=485&q=edgar+davids&gbv=2&oq=edgar+davids&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=22555l25270l0l29450l12l9l0l0l0l0l728l2240l4-1.2.1l4l0 Edgar Davids.]]
* NotSoDifferentRemark: After Kidou told Endou the story about how he lost his parents and how he started to play soccer after the only thing they had that was saved was a soccer magazine, Endou told him that he lost his grandfather and started to play soccer after he saw his notebooks and points out that they're the same.
* NumberTwo: Becomes this towards Endou in the third season, because he's usually the one who takes the lead when Endou is benched or when the main team is split into two teams.
* OpposingSportsTeam: At first his team was the biggest threat for Raimon and other soccer teams, thanks to their cruelty, but it turns out the actual villainy is commited by their coach, Kageyama, and what makes them evil is their loyalty to him. [[spoiler:After they realise what a person he is, they realise their mistakes and leave his side.]]
* PayEvilUntoEvil: In order to stop Ichihoshi from harming anyone, he orders Haizaki and Hiroto to attack him.
* PowerCopying: He uses Haizaki's Overhead Penguins technique in the match against Shining Satans, which angers Haizaki because he stole his move.
* PsychoticSmirk: He pulls off some good smirks in his time as a villain.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Underneath the goggles, he has red eyes. Subverts the evil aspect. Ironically, the colour of his eyes is revealed (via flashbacks) in the same episode where he pulls a HeelFaceTurn.
* RedOniBlueOni: Red to [[NiceGuy Fidio's]] Blue, Blue to [[EvilCounterpart Demonio's]] Red. Coincidentally, he has both red eyes (as opposed to Fidio's blue eyes) and blue goggles (as opposed to Demonio's red goggles).
* RhymingNames: Ki'''dou''' Yuu'''to''', although technically, the first "o" is longer.
* ShowerScene: He is seen taking a shower in episode 2 of ''Ares'' while he's talking with Haizaki about Inakuni Raimon.
* TheSmartGuy: He's the most analytical and clever guy of Raimon/Inazuma Japan, acting as the team's game maker and being the one who figures out the opponents' strategies.
* SpinAttack: Death Zone and Death Zone 2 are both shoot hissatsu techniques with similar usage that involves a lot of spinning. In the manga, he also knows Dark Tornado, which is similar to Fire Tornado.
* SternTeacher: To [[spoiler: Raimon]] in ''GO''. He gives the team a hard time to practice, to the point where some refuse to come to practice the next day.
** TricksterMentor: [[spoiler:It turns out he did it so he could run diagnostics on their limitations, then he adjusted their individual training menus to their maximum capabilities. He did it to help them, but like the previous coaches, he doesn't explain his strategies.]]
* TheStrategist: He's a genius playmaker and he's often responsible for figuring out how to break through opposing teams' supposedly unbeatable strategies.
* SupremeChef: In the Drama CD he cooks French, Russian and Italian food.
* TeenGenius: In addition to being one of the most talented players he's also a good student who gets good grades at school.
* TragicKeepsake: After Kageyama's (temporary) death in episode 106, Kidou receives his shades.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Despite often being at odds with Fudou, especially in the beginning, they become pretty close as the series goes on.

''"The north's best striker is usually cool and calm [[SplitPersonality until he's on the field...]]"''

* AbledInTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:Unlike the original series, he never developed Dissociative Identity Disorder in ''Ares'', thanks to his family (at least his brother) being SparedByTheAdaptation.]]
* TheAce: Played with. He's initially known as a legendary striker and Raimon were looking for him when they were searching for a substitute for Gouenji, only for them to discover he's an ace defender rather than an ace striker during their match against Hakuren, though he still qualifies for this trope. During the same match, they saw that he can play as a striker as well and relied mostly on that during their matches against Aliea, especially after Someoka leaves the team. Except that's actually the split personality of his brother Atsuya the one who scored for them instead of Shirou. They do however become a single strong being who's good at both offense and defense after they merge and he plays mostly as a striker after that.
** BrokenAce: He survived an avalanche accident which killed his family. Because of said accident, he developed a SplitPersonality of his twin brother Atsuya. [[BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind It went surprisingly well until Aliea Academy appeared...]]
* AdaptationDyeJob:Two instances of this trope.
** In the video game, in addition to his hairstyle changing, it also turns lighter when he switches to his other personality, while in the anime this doesn't happen.
** In the original series and in ''GO'', his hair is light gray with a faint bluish tint. In ''Ares'', it's more of a light purple.
* AdaptationalAngstDowngrade: [[spoiler:All of the problems regarding his split personality and his struggling to get over it are removed in ''Ares'', where his family didn't die in the avalanche accident.]]
* AnIcePerson: He has ice based hissatsus and lives in a snowy region.
* AnimalBattleAura: Wolves.
* AnimeAccentAbsence: Despite being from Hokkaido, he doesn't have a different accent. Which is weird, because his teammates from Hakuren ''do''.
* AngstySurvivingTwin: He's the only survivor in his family after his parents and twin brother died and spends most of the second arc dealing with the {{split personality}} of his twin. He gets better.
* BackToBackBadasses: The initial pose of The Birth (a hissatsu he created with Hiroto) invokes him and Hiroto standing back to back with their arms crossed.
* BadassAdorable: One of the most badass and adorable characters.
* BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind: [[spoiler:Fubuki started showing this when he met Desarm, much worse added with Someoka's withdrawal from the team. Unable to achieve his idea of perfection and also needed more as a striker instead of a defender led to Atsuya dominating control over Shirou's body.]]
* BigOlEyebrows: In the original series. His eyebrows are thinner in ''GO'' and in ''Ares''.
* BlushSticker: He sported a pink blush on his cheeks in some flashbacks of his childhood.
* BreakTheCutie: If losing his family as a young child and developing a split personality of his twin didn't make him a BrokenBird enough, the fights with Desarm, who tried to provoke Atsuya to become stronger for his own entertainment, which lead to Atsuya taking control over Shirou's body as a result, really gave this timid boy a hard time.
* TheCaptain / RedArmbandOfLeadership: Of Hakuren.
* ChekhovsGunman: In his debut episode, on their journey to Hokkaido, Raimon meet him at the northern ridge during a blizzard and allow him in the Caravan to drive him home. Because they were ExpectingSomeoneTaller, they don't realize he was the legendary ice striker Fubuki Shirou they've been looking for.
* ChickMagnet: As seen in episodes 35 and 40, when some girls he met for the first time stay close to him and takes advantage of this to gain information, but isn't really interested in girls oherwise.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His family were killed in an avalanche incident when he was a kid. Shirou was pushed off the car by Atsuya, leaving only Shirou alive.
* [[DeceasedParentsAreTheBest Deceased Brothers Are The Best]]: Zig-zagged. His brother did save his life when he pushed him off the car, without caring that he'll die instead in the process. But after he formed inside Shirou's mind, he started to act like a jerk and play very agressively, although he also helped Raimon in the matches against Aliea, mostly alone since he was the only capable striker for a while. That didn't make Shirou feel better, in fact it made him feel useless, at one point Atsuya downright telling him that he wasn't needed. However, his true intentions were to show him that he should work with the entire team instead of depending only on his brother and after Shirou finally realized that, they merged into a single being and Fubuki TookALevelInBadass as a result.
* DualModeUnit: He's one of three characters who can use a special ability named Chara Change in the second game. In Shirou's form (which is his default form), he's a defender whose default hissatsu is Ice Ground. In Atsuya's form, he becomes a forward whose default hissatsu is Eternal Blizzard.
* ElementalHairColors: Light gray hair which fits his [[AnIcePerson ice element]].
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: Because of the histories told of him, everyone imagines him as a giant and Raimon were surprised when they found out the boy they saved from the blizzard was the legendary striker they were looking for.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: depending on when he’s [[spoiler:Shirou or Atsuya]]. The spikes in his hair face downwards when he's [[spoiler:Shirou]] and upwards when he's [[spoiler:Atsuya]]. [[spoiler:After they merge, his hair becomes a combination of their hairstyles.]]
* EyeColourChange: His eyes change from gray to orange when he switches to his other personality.
* FearOfThunder: He's afraid of every sound that reminds him of avalanches, including thunder.
* FireIceDuo: Crossfire combines his ice with Gouenji's fire.
* FiveTemperamentEnsemble: The phlegmatic. He's the most gentle, delicate and soft-spoken of the All-Stars, particularly in the third season where he got over his issues and interacts more with his teammates.
* GoodEyesEvilEyes: He normally has TaremeEyes with normal sized pupils and a gentle personality. When he switches to Atsuya, he becomes more aggresive, his eyes change to [[TsurimeEyes tsurime]] and his pupils shrink and become narrower.
* GoodHairEvilHair: The spikes in his hair face downwards and look rather fluffy in his normal form, but face upwards and become stiffer when he switches to his more agressive split personality, making him look more devilish.
* GollumMadeMeDoIt: His teammates realized from the start that he becomes a different, more agressive pleyer who refuses to cooperate with the others when his position changes from defender to forward, but at first they didn't know that was the split personality of his brother.
* HatesBeingAlone: What he sais after Gouenji leaves him alone in the rain after their conversation about Fubuki's ideal of perfection.
* TheHeart: The most sensitive, delicate and soft-spoken one in the team, followed by Kazemaru who shares this role with him in the third season.
* HeroicBSOD: Mostly when Epsilon were Raimon's main threat.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Despite being a very strong defender, he has low-self confidence and considers himself to be weak, especially when compared to his "stronger" brother. It doesn't help that Raimon needed him more as a striker than as a defender and combined with being unable to achieve his idea of perfection, he started to think that he isn't needed.
* IconicItem: The scarf in this case.
* ImageSong: ''Ice Road''.
* InSeriesNickname: He has several, including "The Prince of the Snowfield" (the title of an episode) and "The Bear Killer". The former one is his nickname in ''Ares'' as well, with the latter being given to his brother.
* IndifferentBeauty: He's aware of the effect he has on girls and uses this as an advantage to gain information, but he doesn't really care about his appearance.
* InnocentGrayEyes: He has teal-gray eyes, fitting the innocent type.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: In ''GO'', he has a close relationship with Yukimura, a player from Hakuren. However, they had a temporary fall-apart after he was forcibly removed from his coach position by Fifth Sector because Yukimura, not knowing the circumstances, thought Fubuki betrayed him.
* LightningBruiser: Not only is he good at defense and offense, he's actually being able to keep up with (and at some point faster than) FragileSpeedster Kazemaru and other fast members of the Alieas teams and his strenght is comparable to that of [[MightyGlacier Someoka]] and Gouenji, but is faster and better at defense.
* MeaningfulName: Fubuki means "blizzard" and "Shirou" means white. This is a pun on his [[AnIcePerson element]] and most of his hissatsus.
* MySiblingWillLiveThroughMe: Not by conscious choice, but he doesn't reject Atsuya's presence, either. Stops once he decides he doesn't need to be perfect.
* NiceGuy: One of his most defining traits. He's very gentle, soft-spoken and a helpful player.
* OneManArmy: During the Raimon vs. Hakuren match, Fubuki was capable of single-handedly facing Raimon. And the best Endou could have was to redirect his shot, and even that required the help of Kabeyama and Touko.
** Eventually it was subverted as Raimon slowly adjusted themselves to match Fubuki.
** However, after losing [[spoiler: Someoka]]; Fubuki slowly went back into this mentality, and it actually helped them score against Epsilon.
* OopNorth: In the British dub of the games he has a Yorkshire(?) accent.
* ParentalAbandonment: His parents were killed by an avalanche accident when he was little.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: He seems small and weak but he's actually one of the strongest characters. Notably, he knocked out a bear much larger than him with no effort.
* PolarOppositeTwins: With Atsuya in the first anime. In the games and in ''Ares'' he's one year older than him. See SiblingYinYang below.
* PutOnABus: [[spoiler:During the match against Fire Dragon, their captain realized Fubuki was the biggest threat due to being good at both offense and defense and told his teammates to keep their eyes on him. After Fire Dragon used their hissatsu Perfect Zone Press on him, he injured his leg badly enough to be taken off the team.]]
** TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler:He comes back after the match against The Empire to replace an injured Kurimatsu.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue oni to both Someoka and [[spoiler: Atsuya]]. Coincidentally, he has gray hair.
* {{Retcon}}: In the original series, Shirou and Atsuya are described as the perfect defender striker combo. In ''Ares'', they're both strikers for Hakuren, even though Shirou didn't become one until merging with Atsuya.
* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler:After Someoka was injured, Fubuki started to lose himself over his "perfection" with Someoka. This led him to slowly lose himself to Atsuya, and reaching it's logical climax when he tried to stop Hiroto's Ryuusei Blade.]]
* ScarfOfAsskicking: He has a pretty nice scarf [[spoiler:which is also a TragicKeepsake. He loses it after merging with Atsuya, but doesn't lose the "asskicking" part. If anything, he becomes more so.]]
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Sensitive guy to Someoka's manly man.
* ShrinkingViolet: His lack of self-confidence comes from comparing himself to his brother, whom he considers to be stronger, while he considers himself to be the weak one. At first he thought he needed Atsuya because when he was with him, he could change his weak self. [[spoiler:After he developed a split personality of him, he started to rely mostly on that, but as time went on, he started to feel unneeded. But after merging with his brother, he became more confident and started to work better with his teammates.]]
* SiblingYinYang: Shirou is a gentle and timid defender BlueOni while Atsuya is a HotBlooded and mischievous forward RedOni.
* SlasherSmile: He pulls of some rather sinister ones when he switches to Atsuya.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His dub name is written Froste in the games and Frost in the anime.
* SplitPersonality: This is the key point in Fubuki's CharacterDevelopment in Season 2.
** SplitPersonalityMerge: [[spoiler:When he finally realizes that he doesn't have to become Atsuya, but to rely on the rest of his friends, the two personalities merge. In doing so, he gains the Legendary Wolf technique.]]
** SplitPersonalityTakeover: [[spoiler:At first, Shirou was able to keep his split personality under control just fine, but as time went on, Atsuya started to come out more because of his desire to be perfect and the fact that he was the only capable striker after Someoka left the team also contributed to Atsuya taking control over his body.]]
* SpotlightStealingSquad: The Aliea Academy Arc might as well be called The Fubuki Arc, due to most of the spotlight and CharacterDevelopment being given to him.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: At first, Raimon's members were surprised he was the legendary striker, because they were expecting a muscular giant, which he's not in particular, and Someoka thought he was too weak, but he proves to be a powerhouse on the field inspite of that.
* TwoSiblingsInOne: [[spoiler:After his brother died in an avalanche, he developed a split personality of him. He gets over it after he realizes what his father really meant with "becoming perfect", though.]]
* TalkingToThemself: He's often seen talking to his brother, usually with the help of a mirror.
* TaremeEyes: His eyes are normally droopy and innocent, [[GoodEyesEvilEyes to contrast with his]] {{Jerkass}} [[PolarOppositeTwins brother's]] [[TsurimeEyes sharper eyes]]. However, they become less droopy [[spoiler:after merging with his brother.]]
* TechnicolorEyes: His eyes become golden orange in colour when Atsuya takes over his body.
* TookALevelInBadass: After [[spoiler:merging with Atsuya]], he becomes a single stronger, braver person who's good at both offense and defense, is no longer a shy person, is more willing to speak up for himself and works better with his teammates.
* TragicKeepsake: His scarf used to belong to his brother and it's really important to him.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Thanks to that one [[DarkAndTroubledPast incident which killed his family,]] he's afraid not only of avalanches, but any noise that reminds him of avalanches, including snow falling down from trees or the roof, [[FearOfThunder thunder]] and any other loud banging sound. In the game he became numb when he heard Shin Teikoku's structure collapse.
* ZergRush: Fire Dragon use this method on him. During the match, Choi Chang Soo realises he's the biggest threat for being good both at offense and defense and gets targeted speciffically for this reason. The team uses their hissatsu tactic Perfect Zone Press on him and injure his leg badly enough to be taken off the team for a while. Fortunately, he recovers relatively quickly.

The tropes below apply to Atsuya as Fubuki's SplitPersonality, for Atsuya as an individual, check the Ares folder.

* AntiVillain: [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains Type II/III]].
* BigOlEyebrows: His eyebrows are equally thick as his brother's, at least in the original series. In ''Ares'', they're thinner.
* BreakTheHaughty: His fights with Desarm certainly push him closer to the edge.
* {{Determinator}}
* EvilTwin: Somewhat.
* GlorySeeker
* HairColorDissonance: His hair is light orange, but it looks pink.
* AnIcePerson: He has ice-based hissatsus, his default one being Eternal Blizzard.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: At least it's heavily implied.
* {{Jerkass}}: Comes off as this in flashbacks and how he acts toward Shirou.
** HiddenHeartOfGold: [[spoiler:He's actually a good guy, sort of, and was trying to snap Shirou out of depending on him. [[ReversePsychology Very forcefully]].]]
* KillTheCutie: He was killed in an avalanche accident at a young age. Appearance-wize at least, he's rather cute. Personality-wise at present, not so much.
* PolarOppositeTwins: With Shirou, at least in the first anime. In the game and in ''Ares'' he's the younger brother.
* PosthumousCharacter: He died in an avalanche accident at a young age, along with his parents, leaving only Shirou alive.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red oni to Shirou's blue oni. Coincidentally, he has orange hair.
* SiblingYinYang: Unlike his gentle and soft-spoken brother who plays as a defender, Atsuya is a HotBlooded {{Jerkass}} who plays as a forward.
* TsurimeEyes: He has sharp eyes, [[GoodEyesEvilEyes to contrast]] with his brother's [[TaremeEyes droopy eyes]].

''"A nimble defender. He [[ChildhoodFriends has been friends with Endou for a long time]]. "''

* AmbiguouslyEvil: In ''Ares''. Despite being Kageyama's new underling, he doesn't do anything particularly evil himself and didn't forgive him for his wrongdoing.
* AnimalBattleAura: Honoo no Kazamidori, a technique he mastered with Gouenji, has a fire bird as its aura.
* BeneathTheMask: While collected most of the time, he has confidence issues under high pressure, or after the team loses.
* BlowYouAway: He has wind based hissatsus. [[MeaningfulName His name also suggests this]].
* BreakTheCutie: At the beginning of the second season he was fine, but as the story progressed, more of the original members were broken and Aliea's teams became stronger, which caused him to slowly lose confidence in himself and become more desperate.
** DespairEventHorizon: He crosses it after the first match with The Genesis. Seeing how dangerous they were and seeing how everytime they think they defeated Aliea, an even worse team appears, he became unable to believe they could defeat Aliea and loses his will, which made him quit the team. Thankfully, Endou manages to bring him back at the end of the season.
* CantCatchUp: As the second season progressed and more Aliea teams showed up, he started to lose confidence in himself, seeing that he could not keep up with the levels of Aliea Gakuen, so he couldn't steal the ball and pass to his teammates. Deconstructed after the first match with The Genesis, after which he said that he wasn't strong enough and left, leading him to accept the Aliea crystal by the end of the arc.
* TheCaptain[=/=]RedArmbandOfLeadership: Of the Dark Emperors (in the anime, he didn't wear the armband of leadership, but in the game he did), as well as Inazuma Japan during the first half of the Argentina match.
* ChickMagnet: In some official sources, it's stated he is popular among girls.
* ChildhoodFriends: According to Hino, he has been friends with Endou since elementary school.
* ConflictingLoyalty: At one point in the first season, he had to choose between staying on the Raimon soccer team and going back to the athletics club, a subject brought on by Miyasaka, who kept pushing him to go back. Naturally, he chooses the former and is able to convince him to stay in the club.
* TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget: Tempted by the Aliea crystals to make him feel stronger.
* DistractedByTheSexy: During the match against CCC Osaka Gals, he gets distracted by one of the girls flirting with him.
* DrunkOnTheDarkSide: [[spoiler:His inability to catch up with the rest of his teammates and him wanting to be stronger, even if it means getting power the easy way, leads him to accept the Aliea Meteorite, which sacrifices his good self for power. Of course, this happens to everybody under the influence of the meteorite.]]
* DopplegangerAttack: Bunshin Defense in the original and Spinning Fence in ''Orion'' involve him creating copies of himself.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Fudou makes fun of him being this trope during Fudou’s Wild Card attitude in the Asian preliminary finals of the Football Frontier International.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: [[AmbiguouslyGay Miyasaka]] acts rather [[CrazyJealousGuy clingy]] towards him and it feels like he loves him as more than JustFriends. However, this trope is averted in the dub, where [[ShesAManInJapan Miyasaka is a girl]].
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Trading his Raimon uniform for a predominently black and rather form-fitting jumpsuit and a BlackCloak, that has to be evilly cool.
* FaceHeelTurn:
** Kazemaru joining the Dark Emperors at the end of season 2. It doesn't last long.
*** DarkIsEvil: [[spoiler:They're called the Dark Emperors, they wear dark uniforms and they're not on the side of good.]]
*** HeelRealization: [[spoiler:Subsequently [[TearsOfRemorse crying]] before he faints.]]
** In Ares, Kazemaru is in Teikoku [[spoiler: but the bigger issue is he seems to be Kageyama's new underling. But as it turns out, Kageyama manipulated him to obey to him after reminding him of Raimon's loss to Barcelona Orb and his desire to make Teikoku stronger.]]
* FinalBoss: At the end of the second game, he becomes the captain of the last team from Aliea Academy.
* FiveTemperamentEnsemble: The eclectic, he's friendly and the sane guy of the team, with a more balanced temperament compared to the other All-Stars.
* FragileSpeedster: He's one of the fastest in his team, but not one of the physically strongest, which is why he's either seriously hurt by Genesis in the games or leaves the team due to not being as strong as Endou in the anime.
* TheHeart: He's one of the more sensible members who occasionally tries to prevent a conflict within the team or with the opponents.
* HeroicSacrifice: Non fatal, but at times where it looks like Endou is too much pain or about to lose a goal, Kazemaru ends up being the one that runs back to takes the most hits to help Endou defend.
* IKnowYouAreInThereSomewhereFight: Because of all the dark battles and the situation in season 2, the Alieas rock warped Kazemaru's mind to focus on becoming just as strong as Endou without remember the fun soccer is. Thankfully, Endou snaps him out of this.
* ImageSong: ''Mai Agare![=/=]Let It Soar!''.
* InformedAbility:
** Apparently his being diligent made several clubs want him. It's not completely out of the blue--just never specifically showcased.
** His status as a defender in both the anime & games:
*** In the third game, in which his natural moveset consists of two offensive hissatsu and two shoots.
*** In the original anime trilogy he only used one defensive hissatsu in season 2 and that was when he was a part of [[spoiler:Dark Emperors as their '''forward''']].
*** Then he got Deep Jungle in GO, which is a bit too late at this point; but at least he has one now.
*** Subverted in ''Orion'' in which he got a defensive hissatsu called Spinning Fence from the first match and kept using it on other matches.
* InSeriesNickname: His title is "Azure Gale" according to his Eleven License.
* InTheHood: At the beginning of episode 64, Kazemaru and the other Dark Emperors conceal their identity with the hood from their cloaks and is the first to reveal himself to Endou.
* JackOfAllStats: Unlike Handa, not in a negative way. He can play almost all positions sans GK. He can go from a defender that has the speed to stop incoming forwards, a midfielder that’s good at passing the ball, or a forward[=/=]helping the forwards with powerful individual or combination hissatsu techniques.
** Even in the anime he played all these positions at one point. He plays as a defender when he's a member of Raimon, as a forward when he was a member of [[spoiler: The Dark Emperors]] and as a midfielder when he's a member of Inazuma Japan.
* TheLancer: Kazemaru supports Endou, but also acts as his sane man and one of his closest friends in the series. He plays this role more as Endou's lancer in season 2 after [[spoiler: Gouenji]] is temporarily PutOnABus. Generally Kazemaru sometimes falls back on this position to Kidou or Gouenji, and is occasionally TheHeart instead.
** FightingTheLancer: [[spoiler:Raimon's match against the Dark Emperors, which he is the captain of, is basically this. Doubles as FightingYourFriend.]]
* [[LettingHerHairDown Letting His Hair Down]]: Inverted. He's normally a nice guy and he wears his hair in a ponytail. That one time when he wore his hair down was when [[spoiler: [[FaceHeelTurn he joined the Dark Emperors]]. Possibly justified considering the Aliea Meteorite made his hair wild and impossible to tie]].
** In ''GO'', he wears most of his hair down, but this is more of a stylistic choice rather than a change in personality.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He is one and it's confirmed he's a ChickMagnet.
* MaliciousMisnaming: His {{Rival}} Kirigakure intentionally forgets his name and calls him "Fujimaru".
* MeaningfulName: Kazemaru means "wind circle", a reference to his [[BlowYouAway element]]. Also, one of his main hissatsus, "Fuujin no Mai", is literally this.
* NiceGuy: He’s one of the more friendlier members, initially helping out Raimon because they needed the help and going full time after he relies how much he loves the team. He’s very caring and supportive to all of his friends in the clubs he’s joined.
* NumberTwo: usually acts as Endou’s confidant and closest friend to the team alongside Gouenji.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: In the second game, [[spoiler:he is beaten to the point of hospitalization by Genesis after they realize he's the only member of Raimon that's actually managing to keep up with their superhuman speed]].
* NotSoAboveItAll: He brags a bit about being a faster runner than Kirigakure and accepts a small challenge against him after trying to stop Gouenji from challenging Kirigakure before the match. Granted, it was mainly because he didn't want to disappoint Miyasaka.
* OnlySaneMan: Technically not the only one, but he's the one {{Facepalm}}ing on a regular basis.
* OrangeBlueContrast: His uniform from the athletics club which consists of an orange top and blue shorts.
* PrettyBoy: He has delicate features, eye(s) with prominent eyelashes and long hair. It is hinted a few times throughout the series that he's popular with girls and confirmed in some official sources.
* PutOnABus: [[spoiler:After the first match with Genesis, but for different reasons, depending on the adaptation. In the game, he's speciffically targeted for being the only one who could keep up with their superhuman speed and beaten to the point of hospitalization. In the anime, he leaves the team after seeing how badly they were outmatched.]]
** TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler:At the end of the second game/second season, but as a part of the Dark Emperors.]]
* ShipTease: With the Osaka Gals forward Reika and his track team friend Miyasaka, [[ShesAManInJapan depending on the dub series]].
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:Instead of getting seriously hurt by Genesis, he leaves on his own accord after seeing how badly they were outmatched.]]
* SlowlySlippingIntoEvil: This is Kazemaru's [[CharacterDevelopment arc]] in the Aliea Academy arc, at first one can see his talks of attempting to get power the easy way (like using the Aqua of the Gods) to easily beat Aliea Academy as Kazemaru attempting to deal with his problems pragmatically. [[spoiler: Then he got ATasteOfPower with the Aliea crystal, and we see how [[DrunkWithPower he handles this]]]].
* TakingTheBullet: During the practice match against Teikoku, he jumps in front of the goal to take one of the hits instead of Endou. He often takes a shoot for Endou, but he does it for Kanon as well in the movie.
* TearsOfRemorse: He briefly sheds these in the game [[spoiler: after being released from the effects of the Aliea Meteorite.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: It's subtle, but the techniques he learns in the third game/season are definitely more impressive than the ones he learns in the previous games.
* TookALevelInCynic: To an extent in season 2, because he often voices doubt about being able to defeat Aliea Academy, without remembering the fun soccer brings like in the previous season. While he manages to restore his confidence for a while, [[spoiler:[[DespairEventHorizon he loses his will completely]] after his team gets beaten by Genesis and Fubuki gets injured.]] Fortunately in the third season, he acts again like his season 1 self, but leveled up.

''"A naive boy who loves soccer. He possesses a zephyr-like breeziness."''

* ADayInTheLimelight: He gets one chapter focused on him in the manga where Gouenji is the main character. It was actually decided by fans' vote to be about Tenma.
* AllLovingHero: Similarly to Endou, he doesn't hold a grudge for too long, if at all. By the end of the series, he's on good terms with everyone.
* AnimalMotifs: His given name translates to "pegasus" or "wind horse", and complements his wind-themed moves and techniques. Appropriately, his Soul is also equine-themed.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: Part of his hair is shaped like wings (or whirlwinds depending on who you ask), fitting [[BlowYouAway his element]].
* BadassAdorable: He's an adorable midfielder and captain, but when it comes to protecting soccer and his friends, he always springs into action.
* BalanceSpeedStrengthTrio: The speed to Tsurugi's strength and Shindou's balance since he's one of the fastest members of Raimon, but not as strong as Tsurugi.
* BlowYouAway: A majority of his moves and techniques are wind-based.
* TheCaptain / RedArmbandOfLeadership: [[spoiler:After Shindou is injured, he becomes the new captain of Raimon. He was also the captain of the Tenmas, the team which was named after him by Fey, Inazuma Japan, and Earth Eleven among others.]]
* {{Catchphrase}}: When Tenma or his team faces a difficulty, he says [[{{Pollyanna}} It'll work out somehow!]]"'' (translated as "It'll be fine!")
* CheerfulChild: He is younger than Endou and just as innocent and energetic, if not more so.
* ChildhoodFriends: He and Aoi have known each other since they were little.
* CompanionCube: He treats soccer as if it were a sentient being, to the humor and annoyance of some.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: Unlike Endou, who is one of the oldest members of the Raimon soccer club of the original series and already became the [[TheCaptain team's captain]] from the very beginning. Tenma is a NaiveNewcomer to the new Raimon soccer club who at first didn't get much respect, who then later builds up in reputation until he [[spoiler: became the new captain of Raimon after Shindou got injured]]. Also unlike Endou who specializes in being a goalkeeper, Tenma's specialty is dribbling as a midfielder.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Dribbling, he admits, is about the only thing he's good at during the start of the series.
* CuddleBug: It happens when the team celebrates victory and he hugs one of his friends, usually Tsurugi (although he usually misses) or Shinsuke.
* {{Determinator}}: He'll do whatever it takes to overcome the hardest of circumstances to the very end, and nothing will keep him down.
* DorkKnight: He may be a dorky soccer player, but he makes a great captain when helping out his teammates and his friends.
* {{Expy}}:
** His similarities to Endou are pointed out many times. Both are optimistical soccer freaks with a "never give up" attitude.
** His keshin Majin Pegasus can be seen as an {{Expy}} of [[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure Jotaro's Star Platinum]], they are the only FightingSpirit in the series that can evolve into a new form, and they have a second evolution only in a non-canonical material.
* FirstNameBasis: Unlike many named characters in the series who are addressed exclusively by their surname, Tenma is often referred to by his given name.
* FightingSpirit: Demon God [[BlowYouAway Pegasus]], [[spoiler: Demon God Pegasus Arc and Armed in Chrono Stone,]] and his soul in Galaxy.
* ForGreatJustice: Along with Endou, he wants to bring back real soccer.
* FragileSpeedster: He's very fast and agile, and all of his hissatsu incorporate his high speed attacks, but he doesn't have much physical strength. While he's a {{Determinator}}, he's not as strong or durable as [[LightningBruiser Tsurugi]].
* FriendshipTrinket: At the end of the first ''GO'' movie, Tenma receives a bracelet from Shuu as a symbol of their friendship.
* FusionDance:
** [[spoiler: Fused Demon God Pegasus Arc with Sword Saint Lancelot and Instrumentalist Maestro to create Lord of Birds and Beasts Griffin.]]
** [[spoiler: Mixi-maxed with Shuu and later with Myth/KingArthur]].
* TheGlomp: His favorite way to celebrate is to tackle someone in a hug.
* HeroesLoveDogs: Tenma loves [[OldDog Sasuke]].
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler: One when he had to face Taiyou, surprised that he was part of an opposing team, nevermind his illness. Another when he was made aware of what Fifth Sector could do to other schools in response to the growing defiance. The third time in the final when he realized he had been overtaxing his teammates as captain. Tsurugi and Shindou snapped him out of the last one.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Shinsuke share a very close bond with each other since their first meeting in the Raimon opening ceremony.
* {{Keet}}: Tenma's a upbeat, fun loving, positive person who believes enough effort can overcome anything. Some of his teammates hate this aspect of his, but they eventually respect and appreciate his positive nature.
* MeaningfulName: Tenma means "pegasus", being named after his keshin, Majin Pegasus.
* NaiveNewcomer: He's not exceptional at soccer except for dribbling and Raimon is his first soccer team. Endou has to train him and Shinsuke enough to be on par with the other members.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The nice to Tsurugi's mean and Shindou's in-between. He's the most idealistic and friendly from the trio.
* PowerTrio: He hangs out a lot with Shinsuke and Aoi, who are his best male friend and best female friend respectively.
* RippleEffectProofMemory: In ''Chrono Stone'', he's somehow unaffected by the change when Protocol Omega erase soccer from reality, until they target him specifically.
* ShipperOnDeck: He gets excited when he figures out that Aki received a call from somebody who is implied to be Ichinose.
--> ''"So, Aki-nee, get any calls from America lately?"''

* WideEyedIdealist: Save for a few moments, Tenma believes everything can and will work out in the end. Usually he's right and the lengths he goes through to return real soccer start to slowly convince the rest of his teammates.

''"A dark side striker who overwhelms everyone around him with his outstanding talent."''

* AloofAlly: He started off as the TokenEvilTeammate but in the midst of his full HeelFaceTurn, he ends up helping Raimon without getting close to any of the other members.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: In season 1, he started off extremely sadistic and violent, but as Tenma noted, he enjoyed playing soccer for a specific reason, leading to his AloofAlly and TokenEvilTeammate status and officially joining Raimon after his brother decides to heal on his own merits.
** EvenEvilHasStandards: [[spoiler:He gets ''pissed off'' at the rough playing that deliberately aimed to break Tenma's leg]] in Episode 12.
** HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Fully drops serving Fifth Sector as of Episode 17.]]
* BadassCape: The way he wears his jacket creates the effect of a cape.
* BadassInDistress: He has gone through this ''three times'', one time per season, if you count events from the game. In season 1 (game event), he is taken away by Kaioh Academy, for betraying Fifth Sector. Though he is then released after Tenma and others come to rescue him, by scoring one point in a mini soccer game against Kaioh. In season 2, Tsurugi is the only one that still can't play soccer freely, even after Raimon's past has been altered back by Tenma and Fei. [[spoiler: The only thing that can bring soccer back to him is, unfortunately, his brother's HeroicSacrifice.]] In season 3, unbeknownst to the others [[spoiler: he gets captured by Queen Lalaya Obies and is currently replaced by a fake Tsurugi]]. However, he seems to be rather nonchalant about it [[spoiler: until he is imprisoned by Ruza Donolzen]].
* BalanceSpeedStrengthTrio: The strength to Tenma's speed and Shindou's in-between. While capable of great speed, he's also much more hard-hitting and durable than Tenma.
* BrutalHonesty: He's rude, but does not shy away from the truth, especially in regards to his teammates and the dangers of Fifth Sector. The exception is his relationship with his brother, who he will attempt to avoid or hurt.
* TheCaptain: He was the captain of Kuro no Kishidan / The Black Knights before being moved to Raimon.
* CastingAShadow: Most of his shoot hissatsu, as well as his avatar technique Lost Angel, are darkness-based.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: He becomes less irritable and more cool-headed instead after the early episodes.
* CustomUniform: He tends to raise his collar just like his idol Gouenji does.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He has darkness-based hissatsu and a gothic aesthetic. He used to be evil, but not anymore after he has a change of heart and he joins forces with Raimon for real.
* ElementalHairColors: He has dark blue hair, which fits his [[CastingAShadow elemental powers]].
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: He's noticeably paler than other footballers, cementing his position as the "bad boy".
* FightingSpirit: Sword Saint Lancelot, [[spoiler: Armed in Chrono Stone.]]
* FusionDance:
** [[spoiler: Fused Sword Saint Lancelot with Demon Pegasus Arc and Instrumentalist to create Lord of Birds and Beasts Griffin.]]

* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: [[spoiler:In [[GoodIsNotNice the bluntest way possible.]]]]
* {{Goth}}: He has pale skin, dark hair, and black lines below his eyes. One NPC in the game (at least in the dub version) calls him a goth guy.
* {{Guyliner}}: Seems to wear black eyeliner as part of his rebel look.
* HealthcareMotivation: He sided with Fifth Sector at first because he was promised by them money for his crippled brother's surgery if he makes Raimon lose.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Goes from ''intentionally scoring an own-goal'' to pulling a BigDamnHeroes, all in the space of one match.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's introduced as a callous individual who'll do whatever it takes to decimate soccer, but eventually turns his ways around for the better and allies himself with Raimon without any ulterior motives.
* LightningBruiser: His hissatsu are fast and heavy-hitting. He himself is one of the stronger and faster players and can take a hit, shrugging off attacks that could seriously injure the fragile members of his team.
* MeaningfulName: Tsurugi means "sword", which is a reference to his hissatsu Death Sword.
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler:In an accident, he cripples his older brother, who is now unable to play soccer.]]
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The mean to Tenma's nice and Shindou's in-between because of his rebel personality and because he started the series as Raimon's TokenEvilTeammate.
* NonuniformUniform: He wears his traditional outfit instead of Raimon's school uniform or the team's uniform. Eventually, he wears the second one after his brother convinces him to leave Fifth Sector.
* PlayingWithFire: His attribute in the game is fire, which is also the element of his Avatar Lancelot.
* PowerGivesYouWings: The hissatsu Devil Burst gives him black wings which allow him to fly before shooting the charged ball towards the goal.
* RebelRelaxation: Since he's with Fifth Sector, he sits around relaxing while trying to make Raimon miserable.
* SpoilerOpening: [[spoiler: The opening shows him unambiguously on the hero's side.]]
* StockholmSyndrome: [[spoiler:In season 3. Being kidnapped by the queen from villain's planet, makes him understand the real situation the planet is going through. He ends up siding with them, and goes against Tenma. It is later revealed that it's necessary to save galaxy from the real BigBad.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He is cold and arrogant but he will go to great lengths for those he cares about.
* SuperRinger: [[spoiler:His full HeelFaceTurn completely changed the tide of the match against Teikoku]].
* ThemeNaming: His Avatar is named after Lancelot, a figure in [[Myth/ArthurianLegend Arthurian mythology]], just like that of his brother's in an alternate timeline.
* TokenEvilTeammate: [[spoiler: At first, he was Raimon's only SEED sent there to decimate the team. After his brother decides to heal without the need of the money Fifth Sector promised for Tsurugi if he works for them, he stops following Fifth Sector's orders and becomes a better teammate.]]
* TransferStudentUniforms: Initially worn at the beginning of season 1 before [[HeelFaceTurn officially joining Raimon]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: He was more fun and energetic alongside his brother when they were younger. Then the accident happened, and he's been jaded ever since.

''"The captain of the Raimon Soccer Club. A genius [[TheStrategist game maker]] known as the Baton of God."''

* BalanceSpeedStrengthTrio: Compared to Tenma and Tsurugi, he represents a balance between speed and strength.
** SpeedSmartsAndStrength: Instead, he's better known for his intelligence, being Raimon's game maker.
* BigFancyHouse: He lives in a huge house filled with upper class material and pianos.
* TheCaptain / RedArmbandOfLeadership: He was Raimon's captain at first, but after he gets injured and then recovers, he permanently gives the role to Tenma.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: His early episodes show his issues with leading the team. Shifting between watching him and his team to play real soccer and being forced to follow Fifth Sector's rules pressures him until Endou, Tenma, and Shinsuke convince him to follow his heart.
* ChildhoodFriends: Similarly to Endou and Kazemaru, Shindou and Kirino went to the same elementary school. They were both in the soccer club.
* [[CulturedWarrior Cultured Footballer]]: Is an accomplished pianist in addition to being a talented game maker.
* FightingSpirit: Instrumentalist Maestro [[spoiler: and Armed in Chrono Stone]]

* KindHeartedCatLover: In the games, he has two cats. Despite not always being nice, he is overall a good teammate and captain.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: Maestro has four arms.
* MusicalAssassin: His hissatsu are named after music terms, and he's often compared to a conductor.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The in-between to Tenma's nice and Tsurugi's mean. He genuinely cares about Raimon as their captain and goes out of his way to restore Tenma's confidence during the finale after passing the captain role to him. However, compared to Tenma, he is more stoic and adapts less easy to changes, as his in his attitude towards the new members of Inazuma Japan/Earth Eleven.
* PassingTheTorch: When he gets injured before Holy Road's final match, he chooses Tenma to be the new captain.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: He's able to first use his avatar after getting mad about not being able to protect his teammates when Tsurugi defeated his team.
* PrettyBoy: He has smooth features, deep eyes, and long wavy hair. A lot of girls in-universe consider him attractive.
* RedBaron: He's known as the "Baton of God" ("Virtuoso" in the dub), a name that's also used for his signature hissatsu tactic. This is a play on his name, as ''shin'' can be read to mean "god", and ''takuto'' means "baton".
* SnapBack: At season 3, Shindou starts acting a lot like is season 1 self with the Inazuma Japan team.
* SparklingStreamOfTears: His tears are sometimes sparkle-like.
* TheStoic: Introduced like this, but [[NotSoStoic he actually gets quite emotional under pressure.]]
* TheStrategist: Like Kidou before him, he's renowned as a brilliant playmaker.
* TeenGenius: Aside from being the team's playmaker he is also proficient at playing the piano.
* TenderTears: He cries in many episodes, especially when an important event is going to happen. The reason might be because according to Kirino, he takes too much responsibility for the team.
* TimeTravelRomance: During the Sengoku Era, he gets ShipTease with a girl named Okatsu. They both cry after the Inazuma Caravan time-travels back to present.
%%* TheWisePrince
* TookaLevelInJerkass: In season 3. He's not exactly pleasant to the new members. He gets better though.

* CheerfulChild: Shinsuke's small body does not hide his cheerfulness and positive attitude.
* DishingOutDirt: His attribute and the attribute of [[spoiler:Titania]] is Earth. His Avatar is literally described as a defender of planet Earth.
* {{Expy}}: of Endou. He can be considered a mini version of Endou as a goalkeeper.
* FightingSpirit: [[spoiler:Stellar Guardian God Titanias, Armed in Chrono Stone]].

* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Tenma share a very close bond with each other since their first meeting in the Raimon opening ceremony.
* {{Keet}}: He's just as upbeat and fun loving as Tenma is.
* KidsLoveDinosaurs: He is very passionate about dinosaurs. He shows some of his knowledge when Raimon travels to the Mezozoic Era.
* TheLancer: Acts as the best friend variety to Tenma, supporting him and going through trying to change Raimon to play real soccer while taking different paths and interests towards becoming stronger players. He often supports Tenma's efforts and supports him on the field when the rest of Raimon's cowardice while also questioning Tenma and his idealism when the power gap between the two starts to change.
* NaiveNewcomer: Like Tenma, he enjoys soccer, but never played until he got to Raimon Junior High. That being said, he has untapped potential his coach and later his team help him unlock.
* OlderThanHeLooks: He's 12, but looks like a six year old child playing soccer in a middle school with players who themselves look much older than junior high school students.
* PowerTrio: He makes up a group of friends together with Tenma and Aoi.
* SpringJump: Not a gameplay element, but rather, a hissatsu. And his specialty ''is'' jump height. [[spoiler: This is why Sangoku thinks he'll make a good goalkeeper.]]
* TimeTravelRomance: In one Parallel World event from the ''Chrono Stone'' game, a young version of Ootani appears in his timeline and he falls in love with her. He asks Taiyou for romantic advise.
* UseYourHead: Kattobi Defense, a combination hissatsu between him and Kariya, involves Shinsuke stopping the ball with his head after being propeled by Kariya.

* TheCaptain: [[spoiler:After Michinari is injured, he becomes Inakuni Raimon's captain in the final against Outei Tsukinomiya. After that, Michinari is back to being captain]].
* CheerfulChild: We all know that Asuto is always a cheerful, sunny, and bright boy who always makes his friends happy.
* DoubleJump: More like a ''triple'' jump, but his Inabikari Dash involves him doing this. After running fast and doing a normal jump, he does another one mid-air to steal the ball from the opponent and yet another one to get past him.
* FirstNameBasis: His teammates address him with his first name.
* MundaneUtility: He once uses [[DoubleJump Inabikari Dash]] outside the field to help himself and Ichihoshi escape being chased by an angry dog.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The nice to Haizaki's mean and Nosaka's in-between because he's the most friendly and idealistic and the least flawed.
* NoSenseOfDirection: As seen in episode 16 of ''Orion'', where he gets lost in the forest with Ichihoshi when trying to find a waterfall. Granted, the map he was relying on wasn't very useful.
* ParentalAbandonment: His mother passed away in the first episode, while his father left the country when he was young to chase his soccer dream overseas. His mother couldn't go with him and told Asuto that he died in an accident, but in episode 11 he finds out the truth about his father through a letter from his mother.
* PinballProtagonist: While he does get the most attention out of the 3 protagonists in ''Ares''. Asuto actually has the least amount, if not zero involvement in the plot of stopping the Ares program aside from winning the Football Frontier. While he does fare better in ''Orion'' thanks to being given his own sub-plot centred around his long lost father, he otherwise doesn't get much more involved in the season's main plot than the rest of the team, with Ichihoshi being the one who gets the most focus and character development.
* RotatingProtagonist: Along with Haizaki and Nosaka.
* ShockAndAwe: Inabikari Dash. He runs very fast and turns into lightning. In this form, he jumps in the air, does a double flip and after he gets the ball, he does another flip past the opponent with lightning behind him.
* TraumaCongaLine: Went from losing a club immediately to have his mother die in the same day.

* AlliterativeName: His dub name, '''E'''lliot '''E'''mber.
* AloofAlly: He's very distant from his teammates, refuses to tell his problems to the others and refuses to play in some of the matches. His teammates don't like this aspect of his.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: He's noticeably tanner than most of his teammates, but his ethnicity is not clear. Only his father is dark-skinned, while his mother is pale.
* AnimalBattleAura: Overhead Penguin is a powerful shoot type hissatsu similar to the Emperor Penguin techniques, except it involves only one player, who kicks the ball upside down. Other penguin hissatsu he knows are Perfect Penguin and Penguin The God & Devil with Kira Hiroto. A non-penguin animal technique he has is Shark The Deep.
* AntiHero: The main reason why he plays in the Football Frontier is to defeat the team that ruined his best friend's spirit, a team owned by the [[ObviouslyEvil antagonist]] of the series, so in the end he's still one of the good guys, but displays a lot of traits which are far from heroic.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Appears just in time to kick a ball towards the BigBad of "Ares no Tenbin" before he could actually hurt Nosaka]].
* BirdsOfAFeather: In Orion, his interactions with Hiroto vary between this and TooMuchAlike.
* BloodKnight: According to Kudou, he usually doesn't become agitated during matches, but when he meets interesting opponents, he becomes a very aggressive player who likes to attack relentlessly.
* BondingThroughSharedEarbuds: In the "Bus Seats" chapter from the ''Heir of Penguins'' manga, he lets Mizukamiya listen to music with him through shared earbuds.
* BreakTheHaughty: He gets hit with this in the match against Kidokawa, a match he didn't really want to play in the first place. Much to his shock and anger, he discovers that he has to play as a goalkeeper and underestimates Gouenji inspite of Kidou's warning, only for him to freeze off when he shoots his Fire Tornado towards Haizaki. It doesn't score, due to Yagihara and Shiratori defending it, but he feels humiliated. He loses it in the second half and leaves the goal and rushes forwards to try to score a goal, but fails, because Kidokawa's defenders stop him. However, after realizing why he was given the goalkeeper position, he gets switched back to forward and wins the match with help from his teammates.
* BrokenAce: The ace striker of the number 1 ranked Seishou, whose childhood friend is currently in a comatose state and unresponsive, [[spoiler:at least to him]]. He's trying to bring her back and to get revenge over the school which did that to her, but Kidou is trying to help him out of his darkness. Lampshaded by Michinari:
-->'''Michinari''': He might be talented, but he's still a child with problems.
* ChildhoodFriends: In his childhood, he used to play with Akane until she was chosen for the "Ares no Tenbin" project which made her emotionless and unable to talk to him anymore.
* ClosetGeek: As revealed in episode 14 of ''Orion'', he's a bigger bear geek than previously shown. He knows a lot of products related to bears, but it's not a subject he likes to talk about.
* CompositeCharacter: He's a combination between Kidou and Tsurugi.
** Like Kidou, he's initially part of a team way stronger than that of the protagonist which faces the main team twice: first time with Raimon completely hopeless and scoring a single goal in the entire match with the same hissatsu and second time in the preliminary, where they are on similar levels, but Raimon still defeat them in the end. Nevertheless, their teams still qualify for the national tournament, but get defeated by an even stronger team that Raimon is going to face off in the finals. In the end, both Kidou and Haizaki join the main team, wearing the same number 14 uniform[[note]]WordOfGod confirmed that Haizaki wearing the number 14 uniform is a nod to Kidou.[[/note]].
** Personality-wise, he's a lot more similar to Tsurugi, being an aloof, [[TroubledButCute edgy pretty boy]] and [[AntiHero a ruthless striker]]. Also like Tsurugi, he has somebody [[MoralityPet close to him]] who lives in the hospital.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His first friend Akane was chosen for the "Ares no Tenbin" project which left her unresponsive for a long time. This incident greatly influenced his personality.
* EvilLaugh: He does one during the match versus Inakuni Raimon after Kozoumaru scores a goal and sees "the true potential" of the team.
* GoodIsNotNice: Post HeelFaceTurn, he is still quite agressive. Acknowledged by Kidou who reach to him and Hiroto when the team need to take care of Ichihoshi.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: His right eye is covered by his hair. His aloof personality is complemented by this hairstyle. When he was a kid, he was more cheeful and didn't have these bangs.
* InSeriesNickname: He is called the "Demon of the Field".
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: The heart of gold is at first shown only towards Akane, while being arrogant towards anyone else, but as of episode 7, he's starting to work more with his teammates in Seishou and to slowly open to them.
* ModestyTowel: Wears a towel around his waist after his ShowerScene in episode 2.
* MrFanservice: He was shown at least half-naked more than three times in the anime. Most of those times are normal shirtless scenes, and he once got a ShowerScene.
* NewTransferStudent: He transfers to Raimon in the final before Outei Tsukinomiya. However, he comes back to his original school at the end of ''Orion''.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The mean to Asuto's nice and Nosaka's in-between. This one is given considering his aggressive play style and geneeral rudeness.
* TheNicknamer: He calls almost all the members of Seishou Gakuen by a nickname based on their defining appearance characteristic: Sasotsuka is "Spiky", Amano is "Shaggy", Orio is "Fox" etc. The only members he doesn't give names to are Kidou and Mizukamiya (he just calls him "Captain"... yet he's the only one who ''wants'' to have a nickname from Haizaki).
* NoBrows: He doesn't have any eyebrows.
* PickyEater: In two extra chapters from the ''Heir of Penguins'' manga, he tries to avoid the bamboo shots when eating ramen, though Kidou gives him no choice. In a later chapter, he gets fussy when he sees a shiitake mushroom on his plate (which is lampshaded), and is surprised that Saotome can actually eat that.
* PsychoticSmirk: His default expression is his sly smirk.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Part of his eyes are red and gets completely red irises when Mikado Anna describes him as somebody who attacks relentlessly once he finds good opponents and be has ended a few teams.
* {{Revenge}}: He started to play soccer to take revenge on the Ares no Tenbin project which changed his friend for the worse.
* RotatingProtagonist: Along with Inamori and Nosaka.
* ShrinkingViolet: Was rather shy in his childhood before he became friends with Akane. His first reaction when he first meets her is to close the door behind him.
* ShowerScene: During the Inakuni vs Seishou match, he gets a flashback of him talking to Kidou about the opposing team while both are taking a shower.
* TechnicolorEyes: He has central heterochromia (grey outer, red inner) and golden pupils.
* TroubledButCute: He might be an aloof, arrogant, revengeful and rather emotionally unstable boy with a {{dark and troubled past}} he doesn't like to talk about, but he's undeniably handsome as well.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: He used to be a lot happier and nicer as a child, until his best friend got into a comatose state because of an educational program and started to become revengeful and arrogant.
* YinYangBomb: Penguin The God & Devil combines his dark energy with Hiroto's light energy, creating angel and demon penguins.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: The first year of the Ares trio, making him the youngest.

* TheAce: As said by Tsukushi, he's not only talented, he's also handsome and gets perfect grades. He excels in every area. But at the same time...
** BrokenAce: His ability to excel at every area comes at the price of developing brain tumor and emotionally detached due to the Ares no Tenbin program.
* ArtisticLicenseMedicine: He has a head full of hair even after having his brain surgery done. In real life, he would have had it shaved. However, it turns out he was originally planned to have shorter hair after his surgery, but because the female staff didn't like his new hairstyle, it remained unchanged.
* BadassCape: The hissatsu tactic "Ouja no Takuto" gives him an emperor cape.
* BlessedWithSuck: The Ares no Tenbin program his team is part of might give people superior abilities, but it often has negative side effects, such as him developing a brain tumor, as well as drying people out of their emotions.
* TheCaptain: Of Outei Tsukinomiya. [[spoiler:In ''Orion'', he becomes this for Inazuma Japan after he returns from America and replaces Endou's role as the captain for a match. Endou is soon released out of custody and takes his position back.]]
* ChickMagnet: Implied by him having girls fawn over him in the background and Anna is also implied to have a crush on him.
* DorkKnight: He has many quirks like his sitting pose and his soft spot for good foods, but he's also one of the best players and strategists in the series.
* FightingSpirit: His hissatsu King's Lance manifests into a giant, glowing knight who launches a glowing lance towards the opponent's goal.
* FinalBoss: The ultimate rival for Haizaki and Inakuni Raimon to overcome in the finals of ''Ares'' Football Frontier. Fittingly enough, Nosaka views Inakuni Raimon as this due to their growth, rising unpredictably, and the answer to whether or not the path he is taking is the right one.
* GoodAllAlong: A good portion of his character arc is about whether or not he's a good person after all especially since he's part of an enemy team and was willing to injure his opponents during the match. It turns out he always knew about how wrong the Ares program was and was trying to destroy it by using his illness as proof.
* HandicappedBadass: Even though he has a brain tumour and he isn't allowed to overexert himself, he still manages to bring his team to the Football Frontier finals while also being a top notch strategist.
* HeroicSacrifice: He doesn't die in the end, but the reason why he didn't take the surgery immediately after he discovered he has a brain tumor, despite knowing he didn't have long left to live, is because he first wanted to investigate more about the Ares program and its negative side effects and to put a stop to it using his illness as proof.
** In a flashback he also saves a little girl from an apartment on fire, without any protection equipment and escapes the building by throwing himself from the balcony since it was the only way to escape. He only gets some burns and injuries, though.
* IcyGrayEyes: His lightless, dull gray eyes were given to him to signify his lack of emotions.
* InSeriesNickname: He is called the "Emperor of Tactics".
* IronicName: The two kanji in Nosaka(野坂)mean "field" and "hill" respectively, which goes along with his team's ThemeNaming based on nature. However, according to Hino, this naming motif is meant to be ironic, because there's nothing natural about the Ares no Tenbin program that his team received.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The in-between to Asuto's nice and Haizaki's mean. He isn't exactly somebody who can be called nice, but despite being the FinalBoss, he's a lot more civilized than [[AntiHero Haizaki]].
* ParentalAbandonment: Due to his father constantly working, Nosaka's mother had very little money and nearly lost it taking care of her son. Eventually she gave him up to the Scales of Ares program. [[AllThereInTheManual Interviews with Hino Akihiro]] also reveal that his parents are divorced and he also suffered under ParentalNeglect.
* PutOnABus: [[spoiler:At the start of ''Orion'', he goes to America for his surgery. He comes back before Inazuma Japan's match against Eternal Dancers.]]
* RealMenWearPink: His hair is pink.
* RoseHairedSweetie: His pink hair makes him a smart and sassy sweetheart off the soccer game.
* RotatingProtagonist: Along with Inamori and Haizaki.
* ScarsAreForever: Got a crown-shaped scar on his back when he saved a little girl from a building on fire.
* ShipTease: He gets a lot of this with Anna. She's one of the few people he opened up to and is aware of her feelings towards him. While he doesn't want to advance things further, he is appreciative of Anna.
* TheStoic: He doesn't show any emotion at first, which is not surprising considering the effect the "Ares no Tenbin" project has on people. He starts showing more [[NotSoStoic emotions]] as the series goes on.
* ThoseTwoGuys: He's always seen with Nishikage outside of matches. At first, their role was mostly to comment on the events, but he becomes more active in the plot since the second half of ''Ares''.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: He has only three months left to live because he has a brain tumour. [[spoiler:As of ''Orion'', he is healed]].

-->'''Voiced by''': Tomohiro Oomachi

* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: To his little brother, he is always far better than he is at soccer. Which makes it hard for Hikaru himself to accept that he is the one to survive while his brother died to form a split personality to cope.
* TheAtoner: At the end of episode 13, he attempted this by leaving the team to make up for the sabotage he did to Inazuma Japan. It didn't stick because he was EasilyForgiven by a majority of the team, however. But even so, Ichihoshi still felt that his actions would be considered as ForgivenButNotForgotten, and tried hard to please the rest of the team to make up for it.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: His interactions with Endou are a perfect example of this. He's pretending to be a big fan of him, but he just wants to get rid of him. When Ichihoshi was practicing with Endou, he was trying to tear him apart with a spike attached to the ball he kicked towards him, which Endou managed to dodge due to Kidou's warning. Even after trying to downright severely injure or possibly even commit murder he pretends to be innocent, saying that it's not him who sabotaged the ball. Eventually [[AvertedTrope averted]].
* ChildhoodFriends: With Froy, back when he was Hikaru with Mitsuru's personality.
* CompositeCharacter: He's a combination between Tsurugi from ''Go'' and Fubuki Shirou.
** Like Tsurugi, both of them are soccer players who are a part of an organization that wants to control soccer and as a result they sabotage the team they are a part in. They also both have brothers who are in the hospital and for the sake of their health are working for their villainous organization.... at least that's what Ichihoshi was lead to believe. However, Tsurugi makes it clear from day one that he's working for Fifth Sector to Raimon but hesitates in following along with their plans completely. Ichihoshi, on the other hand, hides his affiliation with Disciples of Orion until Inazuma Japan finds out on their own and is more direct and willing to go along with his orders... Until he was ordered to make Inazuma Japan's car ride look like an accident in a similar way he lost his brother and father.
** Like Fubuki Shirou, at least his characterization in the original series, both characters lost their family in an incident and took the death of their brother hard enough to form a SplitPersonality to cope. However, Fubuki is aware that Atsuya is at least, long dead but formed his SplitPersonality unconsciously with hopes that Atsuya will live through him instead and become a perfect player together. Ichihoshi, meanwhile is in denial that his brother is dead and formed the SplitPersonality of his dead brother believing that he is still alive.
* DeadAllAlong: Mitsuru is dead, the Ichihoshi that we all know is actually '''Hikaru''' himself.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: Mixed with SplitPersonality, even!
* DecoyBackstory: Before it was revealed he is actually Hikaru and not Mitsuru, Ichihoshi's excuse for joining the Disciples of Orion was to get treatment for his hospitalized brother. But as stated earlier, the Ichihoshi we know is actually Hikaru, the Mitsuru's alleged sick brother, while the latter died in the same car accident as their father and became the former's split personality.
* DiplomaticImpunity: He can't be taken out of the team, because he's a national goodwill ambassador who was placed in the team to show good faith to other countries. Zhao Jinyun even got in trouble for not making him a starter in the first game, meaning the matter is out of ''his'' hands, but not out of Kidou who is on on him and plans on eliminating him and the other members of Inazuma Japan who know they can't trust him.
* DisappearedDad: His father died in a car accident when he was little.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He's okay with framing Kidou for doping and attempting to injure or maim endou, but even he hesitates when the Foundation orders him to cause a traffic accident on the bus of Inazuma Japan that would clearly severely injure the players, managers and coach on the bus. Especially since that's how his brother got hospitalized in the first place. When the time came for him to put the plan into action, he sweats and hesitates during the moment and the button was only pressed when he dropped it and Goujin stepped on it accidentally. The button also didn't cause an accident, but only caused the volume of Haizaki's headset to increase.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In addition to his eyes, his hairstyle noticeably changes after the reveal that he is actually Hikaru. The arrangement and shape of the spikes is different, with his hair being messier in his Mitsuru form. His bangs are also slightly different and Hikaru's hair is a bit shinier.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: If one looks closely at the brothers eyes, flashbacks show that Ichihoshi's eyes look much more similar to Hikaru's than Mitsuru. It is later revealed that the Ichihoshi we know is indeed Hikaru himself instead of Mitsuru.
* FrameUp: His method of getting rid off Kidou involves him putting drugs in his stuff and framing him as a doper, which gets the latter disqualified from Inazuma Japan. And he had sent a gang to frame Endou for a case of violence when he's only protecting Anna just after Kidou was disqualified. Endou eventually got cleared since it was eventually cleared up that it's a misunderstanding, but Kidou isn't as lucky and Gouenji is still recuperating from his injury.
* FromBadToWorse: His situation is ''rife'' of it. It's bad enough that he lost his sole parent and brother from the incident, but it's even worse when it turns out that Disciples of Orion exploited a young boy who is heavily traumatized from the death of his parent and brother bad enough to form a SplitPersonality, to work for their cause.
* HateSink: Really, save for Inamori and Endou, no one in Orion's rendition of Inazuma Japan likes him due to the rest of the members heavily suspecting him for sabotaging the team. The team would figure out about Ichihoshi's HealthcareMotivation and sympathize his situation, but for some of the members, the damage is already done. Gradually [[AvertedTrope Averted]] though.
* HealthcareMotivation: Mixed up as part of his FreudianExcuse, the reason he does his evil deals is to get the treatment his brother needed. Unfortunately, it is provided by the evil organization he is a part of. Subverted when it is later revealed that his brother is actually dead.
* HeelFaceTurn: By the end of episode 13 of ''Orion''. He also attempted to leave the team to make up for the troubles he caused.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He was best friends with Froy when he played for a team in Russia when he had Mitsuru's personality. They are still close friends furing present time.
* KickTheDog:
** Calling Kidou a filthy doper which was something he framed him for in front of Haizaki who played in the same team as Kidou and learned soccer from him.
** On the receiving end of it when it is revealed in episode 13 of ''Orion'' that his brother is actually DeadAllAlong, meaning that he is working for Disciples of Orion for ''nothing'' and had his denial of his brother's death exploited to ensure his loyalty to the organization.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: He's willing to frame and injure the members of Inazuma Japan so that his little brother, Hikaru, can get healthcare and play soccer again. Even if he has to soil the game he loves so dearly. Subverted when it is revealed that it's Mitsuru who died and the Ichihoshi we know is '''Hikaru''' all along.
* TheMole: As a Disciple of Orion, he joined Inazuma Japan as a spy in order to make the team lose.
* NewTransferStudent: At the end of the series, it's revealed he transferred to Outei Tsukinomoya after the end of the Football Frontier International.
* OneSteveLimit: His real first name in Japanese is the same as Kageyama Hikaru's from the ''GO'' series.
* ShownTheirWork: His case of SplitPersonality mirrors those who suffer a Dissociative Identity Disorder in a realistic light as the trauma of seeing his brother dead was enough for Hikaru to form his SplitPersonality complete with memory gaps and believing that he is Mitsuru while Hikaru is hospitalized.
* SplitPersonality: In denial of his brother's death, Ichihoshi formed a split personality in his brother and believed that his brother is still alive, but ill.
* TechnicolorEyes: He has central heterochromia: black outer and blue inner. This is a big hint that Ichihoshi is the little brother, Hikaru, instead of Mitsuru.
* TokenEvilTeammate: While some characters like Haizaki and Hiroto aren't exactly nice, Ichihoshi is the only one who is part of an actual evil organization, The Disciples of Orion, and has no problem with trying to injure or even murder the others. Gradually averted.
* TwoSiblingsInOne: Before his SplitPersonalityMerge, the personalities of both Ichihoshi brothers used to share the same body. Inside the hospital, he was in his Hikaru form and in his Mitsuru form everywhere else. After the reveal about his true personality and the merge, he is exclusively Hikaru, but also gained the abilities of both brothers.
* UnseenPenPal: When he still had Mitsuru's personality and only took Hikaru's personality with in the hospital, the latter exchanged with Iwato where he revealed the reason why Mitsuru joined the Disciples of Orion. However, neither him nor Iwato were aware that Mitsuru was dead and Hikaru developped a SplitPersonality of him.
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: Back when Hikaru's identity was not yet revealed, Iwato used to send him love letters because he thought he was a girl. After sending him a reply where he reveals that he's a boy, Iwato was shocked enough to stay awake all night.
* WalkingSpoiler: Yep. It's hard to talk about him without fully explaining his motivations and eventual SplitPersonality reveal.
* WeakButSkilled: Hikaru has average physical abilities, but makes it up with having AwesomenessByAnalysis.
** It was revealed by Zhao Jinyun that Hikaru trained arduously to match his brother in terms of physical prowess. He now possesses the best qualities of both brothers.

-->'''Voiced By''': Shou Komura
The protagonist of ''Victory Road''. A boy who loves soccer, but is unable to play due to psychological trauma. He scouts other players and creates his own football team with him as their manager.
----
* BrokenBird: He is unable to play soccer due to psychological trauma, but he still shows his love for it.
* CareerEndingInjury: He has a rare congenital heart disease that makes him unable to make great physical effort, which forced him to give up playing soccer.
* ContrastingSequelProtagonist: Unlike the other protagonists and more or less every character on this page, he is a manager instead of a soccer player like them. He's also a lot more cynical and serious than the other GenkiBoy protagonists.
* LamePunReaction: When Soji makes a pun based on his name, Unmei finds it "cringeworthy".
* NonActionGuy: Since he loves soccer but he can't play it at first, he starts the game as the manager of Nagumohara.
* TakingTheBullet: When Sakurazaki is about to be attacked with a metal pipe by a gang of thugs, he tried to block it with his head and gets knocked-out.
