!!FAF Pilots & Officers

[[folder:Rei Fukai]]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/MasatoSakai (JP), Creator/SteveStaley (EN)

Quiet, cold, and almost never seen without the titular plane, Rei serves as the series protagonist throughout its many media adaptations. Rei is a 2nd Lieutenant in the FAF's Special Air Force (SAF) reconnaissance unit, and is the pilot of the B-503 "Yukikaze" fighter. Although initially depicted as a loner, he is good friends with Jack Booker, and eventually interacts with other SAF pilots.
----
* AcePilot: Obviously. He's good enough on his own, but even better with the AI-guided Yukikaze.
* AmbiguouslyGay: His [[HeterosexualLifePartners relationship with Jack]] in the OVA has certainly left a lot of room open for interpretation. On his side of things, he shows very little interest in women (despite Edith's many attempts), and the very few times he is seen without his usual sullen persona is around Jack.
* AmbiguousDisorder: Let's take a look: He lacks emotion, seems to lack empathy ([[CharacterDevelopment at least at first]]), shows little regard for the lives of others, and appears to prefer the company of machines to the company of actual people. Whether he actually has a disorder or if he acts that way because of his job is anyone's guess.
* AntiHero: Very much so, except in his case he's simply deeply antisocial.
* CharacterDevelopment: Most prominently seen in the second novel. With the help of [[TheShrink Edith]], he slowly comes out of his shell and eventually interacts with other SAF pilots. He even laughs and finds things amusing on occasion.
* DeadpanSnarker: Is prone to this.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: In the OVA, when he's in a coma.
* FireForgedFriends: Rei is stated to have become friends with Jack after the latter punched him in the face.
* FriendlessBackground: Heavily implied, especially in the manga.
* IneffectualLoner: Very much so. He gets better.
* LongLostSibling: His [[AdaptationExpansion manga-exclusive]] younger brother, who dies following a murder-suicide perpetuated by his father.
* LonerTurnedFriend: Is this to Jack.
* Manchild: Can be seen this way. He's quick to complain and whine whenever he is stopped from flying his [[ABoyAndHisX beloved plane, Yukikaze.]]
* NoSocialSkills: At first. It's practically [[CrapsackWorld part of the job requirement.]]
* PrettyBoy: Thanks to Yumi Tada's character designs in the OVA.

[[folder:James 'Jack' Booker]]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/JojiNakata (JP), Creator/DanWoren (EN)
Once an AcePilot, Major James Booker (more commonly referred to as 'Jack') now serves as FAF Special Air Force mission sortie manager, and is, for all intents and purposes, Rei's OnlyFriend. Despite his seniority as Rei's commanding officer, the two are [[HeterosexualLifePartners quite close.]]
----
* AcePilot: He used to be. Now he spends much of his time on the ground.
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: The nasty facial scar mentioned in the novels is completely absent from his OVA design.
* BackInTheSaddle: He serves as Rei's GuyInBack in episode 4 of the OVA.
* BadassNormal: He isn't an AcePilot anymore, and has [[ABoyAndHisX no psychic link to a plane]] to speak of. He's still a very commanding and highly capable presence in the FAF.
* BerserkButton: In the manga, after winning a game of cards, Jack found that one of his prizes was one of the players' wedding ring. Even though he says he divorced his wife a long time ago, Jack gave the ring back to the guy and firmly told him never to bet that ring again.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Rei, more prominently in the last episode of the OVA.
* ColorCodedCharacters: While not explicit, Jack's signature color appears to be red [[RedOniBlueOni to contrast]] with Rei's signature color of blue.
* DadsOffFightingInTheWar: In the manga, he has two children, but seems to hardly ever see them due to his job.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Of the series as a whole, but more noticeably in the OVA.
* DisappearedDad: How his kids presumably view him.
* FriendshipMoment: Sure, Rei has undergone plenty of CharacterDevelopment, but Jack is still the only person he'd call his best friend.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He's known Rei from even before the story proper begins, and one is rarely in a story without the other. Done with [[AmbiguouslyGay much greater effect]] in the OVA.
* MrFanservice: The first episode of the OVA features a scene of him shirtless, adding to his rugged appeal.
* StoryboardBody: In the OVA, he's shown to have a colourful Japanese-style tattoo of a dragon covering his entire back. This serves as visual shorthand for his interest in Japanese culture.
* StealthPun: He's from England, and his nickname is Jack. Hence, Union Jack.
* RedOniBlueOni: Played with in the novels. Though red is his signature color, he's a lot more calm and controlled than the otherwise impulsive and crude Rei.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Akira Katsuragi]]
!!!Voiced by: N/A
Introduced in the second novel, he replaces the unfortunate Burgadish as Yukikaze's flight officer and becomes Rei's flight partner.
----

* CompanionCube: His (virtual) pet cat.
* ContrastingReplacementCharacter: While Burgadish was quiet, polite, and generally naïve, Katsuragi is initially cold, cynical, and rather brash.
* GuyInBack: Becomes this for Rei in the second novel.
* IHatePastMe: Rei initially dislikes and is quite put off by him because of how similar he is to his pre-character development self.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Saying that he and Rei don't get along well is an understatement. [[CharacterDevelopment They get better.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Iho Tamura]]
!!!Voiced by: N/A

A female captain (formerly) in the Japanese Air Force's Advanced Tactical Development Corps. Known for her [[HairTriggerTemper aggressive nature]], an incident regarding which lands her a position in the FAF as punishment.
----

* AcePilot: She's certainly a force to be reckoned with.
* HotBlooded: There's a reason she's nicknamed the "human-shaped bomb."
* {{Mascot}}: Her own personal mascot is a Jackalope, a mythical jackrabbit-antelope hybrid.
* MadBomber: Is more than happy to make things explode.
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Her usual manner of thinking. Usually played straight, but the trope came back to bite her when she fired warning shots at her own trainee simply because [[DisproportionateRetribution they didn't fire at a U.S military aircraft]] when she told them to.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: She's been given the nickname of "human-shaped bomb." For good reason.
* SmurfettePrinciple: So far, she's the only female member of the main fighter pilot cast.

!!FAF personnel

[[folder:Lydia Cooley]]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/YokoAsagami (JP), Creator/CarolStanzione (EN)
Currently the Deputy commander of the FAF Special Air Force with the rank of brigadier-general, Lydia is former investment banker who signed up with the FAF during the early days of the JAM war. Despite [[BitchInSheepsClothing her controversial reputation]], she is a skilled player in the FAF's power struggles.
----
* BatmanGambit: Successfully pulls one of these in episode 5 of the OVA.
* ChasteToons: From what we've seen, she has no marital relations to speak of, yet she does have a niece [[spoiler: revealed to be Edith.]].
* FieryRedhead: Is a redhead in the OVA, and can sass her fellow officers like the best of them.
* ManipulativeBitch: Certainly comes off this way.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: Downplayed. She's seen wearing glasses in the OVA's ED, but these are clearly reading glasses.
* InconsistentSpelling: Is it "Rydia" or "Lydia"?
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: For as much manipulation she does, she still is one.
* TheSpock: The more logical and calculating persona compared [[TheMcCoy to Edith's.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Edith Foss]]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/MihoYamada (JP), Creator/KariWahlgren (EN)
[[MsFanservice Young, charming, and attractive]], Captain Edith Foss is a psychiatrist by trade, introduced as the military doctor in charge of Rei’s rehabilitation. Her skills prove to extend far beyond her usual limit, as she is later ordered to "profile" Yukikaze and even the JAM.
----
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She has blonde hair in the OVA, and is definitely a kind person.
* TheHeart: Displays an uncharacteristic level of empathy towards others, especially given [[CrapsackWorld the setting.]]
* HiddenDepths: The FAF's resident attractive and otherwise very rule-abiding woman also enjoys gambling, specifically mahjong.
* MsFanservice: Downplayed. The most fanservice she ever displays is thanks to [[SexySlitDress the slit in her dress]].
* NoNameGiven: According to the guidebook, her full name is Edith A. Foss. We never find out what the A stands for.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: She's the light feminine to [[spoiler: her aunt]] Lydia's dark feminine.
* LittleBlackDress: Wears one with a lab coat in the OVA.
* SecretOtherFamily: While she definitely knew, it's a reveal for the audience that [[spoiler: Lydia is her aunt.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tomahawk John]]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/KazukiYao (JP), Creator/DerekStephenPrince (EN)

A Native American FAF captain who was part of the development team that built Yukikaze's AI. Notable for having a plutonium battery-powered artificial heart. Also one of the very few [[NiceGuy genuinely nice people]] in the whole series.
----
* ArtificialLimbs: In the manga, [[spoiler: he has an artificial leg]] in additional to his artificial heart.
* CloneAngst: [[spoiler: The realisation that he's merely a clone of the original Tom John doesn't go over well with him]].
* DeadAllAlong: [[spoiler: In the OVA, he's a clone of the original Tom John]].
* DissonantSerenity: In the OVA, he maintains a very calm demeanor [[spoiler: even as he's about to die]].
* GoOutWithASmile: Whether it be the novel, the manga, or the OVA, he always accepts his death with a smile.
* GoodWithNumbers: Extremely.
* HeartTrauma: He has an artificial heart, and from the way he talks about it, it's clear that it has a massive effect on his own self-perception.
* NaiveNewcomer: Though clearly intelligent, he's way out of his depths. The novel seems to imply it was his first day on the job, too.
* NiceGuy: One of very few in the whole series. You could make the argument that he's the nicest guy Rei ever meets in the first novel.
* NoNameGiven: We the audience never find out what his real name is. He's only ever known by his nickname. The [[AllThereInTheManual official guidebook]] states that his 'Indian name' is Thetholich.
* MeaningfulName: Sure, it's not his real name, but nevertheless - he puts up with an otherwise degrading nickname because it makes him feel braver than he is.
* MellowFellow: He's noticeably calmer and more down-to-earth than other characters.
* LovableCoward: And by his own admission no less!
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Played straight. The only other name he's given (in the official guidebook) is one he's never called by.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Heavily implied to be the sort of ideology his family raised him on. [[SubvertedTrope He doesn't quite buy into it.]]
* ShorterMeansSmarter: Is described as a genius when it comes to numbers, and according to the [[AllThereInTheManual official guidebook]], he's only 167 cm (or around 5'5'') tall.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Appears in just a single chapter of the first novel (and a single episode in the OVA).

!!Non-FAF personnel & other characters

[[folder:Lynn Jackson]]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/MasakoIkeda (JP), Creator/BarbaraGoodson (EN)

One of the few civilian characters in the series, Jackson is the author of [[FictionalDocument The Invader]], a chronicle of the FAF's struggle against the JAM. She is also, notably, one of very few people from Earth who is able to get close to 'Faerians'.
----
* AmicablyDivorced: She's divorced, but still seems to get on well with her ex-husband.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The brunette to Edith's blonde and Lydia's redhead, at least in the OVA.
* BrainyBrunette: Dark-haired and a very intelligent journalist, all things considered.
* FictionalDocument: Her novel 'The Invader', which chronicles the FAF's fight against the JAM.
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: Despite the lengths she goes through, her work documenting the JAM war hasn't exactly been met with open arms back on Earth. In fact, [[spoiler: it appears that most people believe her novel is a work of fiction.]]
* OddFriendship: Has one with [[ManipulativeBitch Lydia]], though it helps that the two are rather close in age.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ririka Maruko]]
!!!Voiced by: N/A

A female lieutenant in the Japanese Naval Intelligence Department. She visits Faery as a representative of the Japanese Navy as a result of the establishment of the Aggressor Force for the war against the JAM on Earth.

* AgentScully: Initially doesn't quite believe in the JAM or what is occurring on Faery.
* {{Nepotism}}: Her great-uncle is the current Minister of the Japanese Navy. Somewhat of a SubvertedTrope, however, since she's shown to be rather competent and capable by her own merit.
