!Red's Crew

[[folder:Gina]]
!!Gina Murphy
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c14f38e630d1c51880eb29bfed6fc956.jpg]]
->'''Played By:''' Abigail Savage

A member of Red's crew in the prison kitchen, it is implied that she was incarcerated for murder and embezzlement. She is often seen with Norma Romano.
----
* AnimalMotifs: She is often compared to a squirrel, because of her squirrel-like appearance and constantly being around Red.
* ButtMonkey: Nobody ever takes her seriously. And she tasted the gravy that Pornstache had pissed in. She also has a tendency to get injured frequently.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: In Season 5, [[spoiler:Gina manages to turn off the alarm that drives everyone crazy, then restores the power after it's been out for a day, and is put out when no one mutters so much as a thank you]].
* NoodleIncident: The reason she's in prison involves embezzlement, theft, and some dude getting shot/shooting himself.
* NumberTwo: For Red during Season 1, but following one of Red's botched schemes she suffers from severe burns and abandons her. Gina eventually forgives Red, but they never become as close as they once were.
* OnlySaneWoman: Gina tends to be the level-headed voice of reason in whatever situation she finds herself. She abandons her reasonable stance as she grows increasingly obsessed with Norma's 'religion'. She gains this status back in Season 5, enough that [[spoiler:she's one of only a small handful of people Frieda considers intelligent and level-headed enough to join her in her private bunker. Notably, Gina is the only one below middle age.]]
* ScarsAreForever: She gets several burn scars due to Red, not thinking that Gina would be the one operating it, messing with an oven after Gloria takes over the kitchen.
* TookALevelInJerkass: She'd never been a particularly nice person, but after her burns she becomes much more irritable and short-tempered.

A member of Red's crew who doesn't speak. She works in the prison kitchen, and a flashback reveals that she was the first inmate Red interacted with upon her own arrival. She is often seen with Gina Murphy, as the two of them work in the kitchens together and cater to all of Red's needs.
----
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Sweet, supportive, a good friend, and murdered her husband for being a jerkass, a cult leader, and verbally abusive for about 30 years.
* {{Cult}}: She joined one back in TheSeventies, and becomes the center of one in prison
* CuteMute: She's older than most examples, but she doesn't speak and her round features and NiceGirl tendencies make her rather adorable.
* TheDogBitesBack: Her murder of her verbally abusive husband and abandonment of the bossy Red in season 3.
* ElectiveMute: She doesn't like to talk because of [[SpeechImpediment her severe stutter]], preferring to communicate with notes and sign language.
* AGodAmI: She's worshiped by a group of women in the prison, because of her comforting gestures. She rather enjoys it, too.
* AGodIAmNot: She ultimately seems to reject the worship after Poussey calls the group out on excluding Soso and for the group losing its original focus.
* GranolaGirl: She joined a hippie commune when she was younger, becoming one of several wives to the cult leader.
* HiddenDepths: She uses her voice for the first time in the season 1 finale, displaying a beautiful singing voice and surprising everyone during the Christmas pageant.
* IWasQuiteALooker: Norma was a lovely red-haired girl when she was young.
* NiceGirl: The one mantra that she holds her new religion to is "Kindness".
* PrecisionFStrike: "Son of a BITCH!" When her abusive cult-leader husband finally pushes her too far.
* TheReveal: Norma's flashbacks show that the reason she never speaks is a severe stutter.[[note]]This actually does fit with the above-mentioned singing, as it's a recognized phenomenon that people with stutters can often sing perfectly fine.[[/note]]
* TheVoiceless: She never speaks, or uses sign language, or even tries to use any body gestures. She only communicates through writing. [[spoiler:It's revealed in Season 3 that she has a terrible stutter, which explains why she never talks except to sing at the end of Season 1. It's much easier for people with a stutter to sing than to speak. Later a flashback of her shows Norma angrily speaking once.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: She gets one from Gloria, an actual Santeria practitioner, for practicing a ThemeParkVersion of Santeria.

!The White Supremacists

[[folder:Sankey]]
!!Kasey Sankey
->'''Played By:''' Kelly Karbacz

* BaldOfEvil: Averted, much to the chagrin of the other members of her clique.
* TheDragon: To a somewhat unwilling Piper for most of season 4. Even after Piper doesn't hang with their white supremacist group anymore, she shows some amount of loyalty and defends her to the others, claiming she'll "come around" eventually.
* EnemyMine: Detests the non-white inmates, but will team up with them effectively against the guards.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Claims she wouldn't hit Suzanne despite being a white supremacist, on account of her being mentally challenged. She's also willing to work with the black inmates when it becomes increasingly clear that one of the guards is a complete sociopath and they need to get rid of him.
* HiddenDepths: Has a lovely singing voice, as seen at the coffee shop talent show.
* IResembleThatRemark: If someone calls her a Nazi, she gets really offended... and proceeds to use a racial slur as a comeback.
* InsistentTerminology: She's a white nationalist, NOT a Nazi. It's something of a {{Berserk Button}} for her.
* KickTheDog: Does a lot of it herself, but is on the receiving end of it by the sociopathic guard Humphrey when he keeps mistreating her in the interrogation waiting room. While this would usually qualify as AssholeVictim due to her abhorrent racism, the fact that it could have been anyone else and that it goes way overboard qualifies as this.
* TheLeader: Of the white supremacist group.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: It becomes increasingly clear that she's a racist, ultimately culminating in her spearheading a white supremacist movement within Litchfield.
* RealWomenDontWearDresses: Seems to believe in this philosophy, and doesn't like her daughter taking interest in princesses.
* ReformedBully: The series finale reveals that Sankey has been reading ''Rising Out of Hatred'', a book by a former white supremacist detailing his growth and departure from those beliefs. Sankey also shares a haiku she wrote for Japanese-Scottish inmate Soso, implying she may have more than friendly feelings toward her.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Brandy]]
!!Brandy
->'''Played By:''' Creator/AsiaKateDillon

* BaldOfEvil: It only emphasizes that she is a neo-nazi.
* BigEater: It's actually very subtle, but if you watch closely, she sneaks food off of her friends's plates. She also overly eager to get all the food promised by Judy King.
* TheDragon: To Sankey, after Piper refuses to hang out with their group anymore.
* HiddenDepths: Appears to be significantly smarter than the rest of the white supremacists. She's also very adept in the kitchen.
* OddFriendship: She occasionally gets along well with Ouija, despite Ouija being Hispanic and Brandy being, well, a Neo-Nazi. In the end of season 5 [[spoiler:the Neo-Nazis and them team up to resist the forces storming the prison]].
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: She's Sankey's right-hand woman. [[spoiler: She's also in prison for stealthily poisoning non-white customers at her coffee shop.]]
* TattooedCrook: She's got several tattoos, including a Confederate flag on her neck.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Skinhead Helen]]
!!Helen Van Maele/Skinhead Helen
->'''Played by:''' Francesca Curran
* AllGirlsLikePonies: The factor deciding the best offer in auction for [[spoiler:Judy King]] in Helen's eyes? Unicorn stickers.
** She also ordered an iced coffee from the Hispanic's coffee shop under the name "[[Film/ThePrincessBride Princess Buttercup]]"
* AmazonianBeauty: Helen is tall, muscled and is considered to be the hot one of her group.
* BaldOfEvil: As per neo-nazi tradition.
* BigEater: Just like Brandy.
* DumbMuscle: Seems to serve this role in her clique. She's tall and generally taking orders from either Brandy or Sankey.
* EnemyMine: Excitedly dubs the Latino/White Supremacist alliance "Team Latte".
* LaughablyEvil: Helen is the funny one of her group, both because of her ditziness and genuine sense of humor.
* MsFanservice: Considered to be the "hot one" out of the white supremacist group by the guards.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: She's a neo-nazi. Duh.
* PreppyName: Her birth name is Helen Van Maele.
* TattooedCrook: She has a series of stars on her face, as well as other Neo-Nazi tattoos.
[[/folder]]

!The Golden Girls

[[folder:Frieda]]
!!Frieda Berlin
->'''Played By:''' Dale Soules

* AffablyEvil: Murdered a bunch of people and is willing to murder more, but she's a fun person to be around and willing to help Alex and Lolly out after they need to get rid of a body.
* BungledSuicide: Her first appearance in Season 6 shows she tried to kill herself by cutting her wrists. The only reason she’s alive is cause of the guards.
* CoolOldLady: Despite her age, she's one of the most competent characters.
* CreepyChild: Was more interested in murder and doom than playing with toys.
* DaddysGirl: As a child, she was very close to her father who taught her a myriad of survival skills. In the present, she keeps a portrait of him [[spoiler: in her secret room]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Has a very dry sense of humor.
%%* DissonantSerenity
* EvilOldFolks: Played with. Most of the elderly Litchfield inmates are implied to have been transferred in from Max, and serving lengthy sentences for violent crimes, and Freida is no exception to this. But she was also plenty creepy in her youth.
* FieryRedhead: Implied to still be natural, as she uses a swiped bottle of bleach to give herself gray hair when she's attempting to get shifted off to Florida block.
* GroinAttack: Frieda is in prison for having sliced off her husband's penis with a butcher knife! And it was dull!
* HeroicComedicSociopath: Always firmly on the side of the [[GrayAndGreyMorality mostly]] good inmates, but also thinks MurderIsTheBestSolution.
* ItAmusedMe: Gets involved in covering up a murder in prison and disposing of the corpse because she's bored.
** She later starts carving a hole in her cell wall, again because she is bored.
* MacGyvering: Thanks to her childhood background as a talented girl scout she can give even Chang a run for her money in this department.
* NervesOfSteel: Nothing ever seems to shake her, not even the process of cutting up and burying a body, the prospect of getting questioned or tortured about it, or nearly getting caught for it. Then again, when you've killed as many people as she has (and disposed of the bodies), it'd be pretty hard to rattle you too.
* NeverMessWithGranny: Or she'll murder you, probably.
* NoodleIncident:
-->'''Frieda:''' I once killed a cop with his own pistol! Wait, did I ever get caught for that? Lord, I'm gettin' old.
* NotTheFirstVictim: Although it isn't clear what she's in prison for, she reveals with the above quote that she killed people for whose murders she was never caught, although she can't remember which.
* ObfuscatingDisability: In Season 6, while being interrogated about the events of the riot, she pretends to be doddering and weak, thus hiding the fact that she is actually one of the more cunning inmates.
* ThePigpen: Season 7 shows that she's become this since the death of the Denning Sisters, collecting old toilet paper rolls, empty snacks, tampon packs. There's even large cockroaches in her cell as Black Cindy finds out the hard way.
** Turns out she drove her cellmate out to allow for her next project: Going full [[Film/TheShawshankRedemption Shawshank]] on her wall.
* SerialKiller: Has killed ''at least'' four or five people, though she can't remember how many murders she's committed or how many she actually got caught for. (Hilariously, the reason she's in a minimal security prison is most likely her good conduct while she was in max.)[[note]]Later revealed in Season 6 that she sold out Carol's smuggling stash to the warden 25 years ago in exchange for a transfer.[[/note]]
* SkewedPriorities: PlayedForLaughs. When the body she helped Alex and Lolly bury is found in the garden, and Piscatella starts pulling dozens of suspected inmates for questioning, only Red is summoned of their group. Rather than being relieved that she doesn't have to be questioned, she's ''offended'' that they didn't consider her a possibility since she's killed (at least) "four people in one year!"
* TrainingFromHell: Her paranoid father left her alone in the middle of woods with just a knife and a vial of water to test her survival skills, and then complains that she didn't make it home fast enough.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jimmy]]
!!Jimmy Cavanaugh
->'''Played By:''' Patricia Squire

One of the "Golden Girls", Jimmy is an elderly woman with severe dementia or Alzheimer's.
-----
* GenderBlenderName: Jimmy is traditionally a man's name.
* PutOnABusToHell: After harming herself when she mistakes the chapel altar for a diving board, the prison gives her compassionate release. Given the fact that she has nowhere to go and has severe dementia, it's pretty much a death sentence for her.
* ScatterBrainedSenior: Played very much so for drama. Especially when she is given compassionate release.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Taslitz]]
!!Taslitz
->'''Played By:''' Judith Anna Roberts

* EvilOldFolks: Taslitz speaks very casually about murdering people.
* PerilousOldFool: Taslitz decides to shiv Vee even though she's so nearsighted that she can't even tell that she's stabbing the wrong person.

->'''Played By:''' Julie Lake

Leanne's friend, and another former follower of Pennsatucky.
----
* TheAtoner: In the Season 5 finale, she and Leanne [[spoiler: burn all of the prisoner's disciplinary records, in an effort to do something good for a change.]]
* ComedicSociopathy: More so than Leanne, who is more spiteful and mean. Angie is good-humored and fun-oriented, and mostly manages to stay funny even when she [[spoiler:terrorizes the prison with a gun, plots to cut off a man's finger or forces him to sexually satisfy Leanne]] in season 5.
* TheCaligula: [[spoiler: Gets hold of the gun in Season 5 and starts running the prison. Everyone is terrified because unlike the previous gun holders, she's incredibly unpredictable and rash.]]
* TheDitz: She is easily and measurably dumber than Leanne, and is aware of this.
* {{The Dragon}}: To Leanne.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: She is mostly shown goofing around and not being able to execute the simplest thought processes.
* HeelRealization: Comes to think that maybe her and Leanne might be villains and not heroes in the story they're in.
* PerkyFemaleMinion: Of Pennsatucky and then Leanne. She is dumber than both of them -- which says ''a lot'' -- but in contrast to either isn't aggressive or mean.
* PunchClockVillain: She just follows Pennsatucky's and later Leanne's lead and is rather cheerful and not actively malicious. In the third season she even confesses to Tucky that she's always liked her, the conflict being Leanne's idea.
* PutOnABus:
** [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. She got mistakenly released, but got caught back in the very same episode because, not unlike Taystee, she did not know what to do outside of prison.
** She gets put on an ''actual'' bus for real in the Season 5 finale.
* RecklessGunUsage: Incredibly, ''massively'' unsafe with a gun, repeatedly pointing it at Leanne with her finger on the trigger and utterly incapable of ''remembering where she put it''.
* ThoseTwoGirls: With Leanne, they are usually seen together as comic relief.
* TookALevelInJerkass: She and Leanne have always been a pair of unstable bullies, which is an unpleasant combination to begin with. In the wake of season 5's [[spoiler: riot they take it up a notch and become downright sadistic towards their hostages and fellow inmates alike.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Leanne]]
!!Leanne Taylor
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2dbf285763d00e5f5bf398b3de017bd4.jpg]]
->'''Played By:''' Emma Myles

An inmate who is often seen with Pennsatucky. She almost fanatically follows everything Pennsatucky says and is her groupie or right-hand woman. She is also addicted to drugs and has been seen exchanging sexual favors with Mendez.
----
* TheBully: To Pennsatucky in Season 2, and Soso in Season 3. [[spoiler: Starts bullying Tucky hardcore in Season 5]]
* DumbBlonde: Subverted. She seems rather dim, and considering Pennsatucky is the brains of the operation, that should say something about Leanne's intelligence. However, in Season 3 it's revealed that she's a former Amish girl so it may be that a lot of her trouble is from lack of exposure as opposed to intelligence. Confirmed when she's shown able to understand and speak (Pennsylvania) German with Poussey in one instance.
* TheDragon: She was an ineffectual one for Pennsatucky during Season 1.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Implied by how genuinely happy she is to see her mom, although only for a minute, outside the prison in Season 5.
* GrewASpine: In Season 2. She becomes much more confident in Pennsatucky's absence, realizing how much nicer things are without her around.
* HiddenDepths:
** She might seem like a dim follower, and she is, but it stems from a rather complex and even tragic life filled with internal conflict. To wit: she's Amish. She went on ''Rumspringa'' and fell into the midst of a SexDrugsAndRockAndRoll-fueled meth ring run by ''other'' Amish and ex-Amish youths. But she decided to ''go back'' to the church, and was ready to lead the bonneted life and get baptized--but then the cops found the sole remnant of her ''Rumspringa'' life, which unfortunately included several baggies of methamphetamine. Even that didn't directly lead to her arrest; the cops planted a wire on her and sent her to inform on the ring of her former friends. When the kids get arrested, the other Amish in the community shun her and her family--because sinners or no, the kids she sent to prison were their children. ''That'' leads Leanne to run away from home, to spare her parents the shame; she presumably is arrested sometime thereafter.
** She is at least ''slightly'' aware of gun safety, repeatedly pushing the gun away from her as Angie points the gun at her.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Leanne cuts Pennsatucky off in Season 2 when she realizes how much nicer it is aroun prison without the girl stirring up drama. Leanne herself quickly takes Pennsatucky's place as a vindictive bully for the rest of the series. That is, when she's not too high to function.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: Leanne doesn't seem all that bad, and is mostly a subordinate to Pennsatucky. She gets less villainous but more effectual come Season 3, in regards to Norma's new "religion" and how seriously she takes it.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Her and Angie's beliefs about getting the prison RN to do a "finger transplant", and the significance of the donor.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: [[spoiler: She's irritated but not traumatized by her finger getting (accidentally) shot off in Season 5. Possibly justified due to her being high off her ass most of the time.]]
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: Unlike Pennsatucky, she never seems to think about her racism and homophobia, and seems to equally despise Black and Asian inmates. Interestingly enough though, when Pennsatucky referred to Soso as "Ching-chong China doll", Leanne chastised her, telling her that she's actually Japanese-Scottish. Leanne is also shown to be friendly with Poussey, who is both black and gay. It's possible she only uses racism and homophobia to antagonize those she doesn't like (an example being that she initially defended Soso from Pennsatucky's racist remark when they were somewhat friendly but then makes racist remarks towards her once their relationship sours).
* PutOnABus: She is transferred after Season 5.
* ThoseTwoGirls: With Angie, from Season 2 onwards. They are usually seen together as comic relief.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In Season 2, particularly when Pennsatucky comes back. Her jerk-assery is redirected in Season 3 toward anyone who threatens her place in Norma's group of followers (particularly Soso), though it's made more understandable when we see her reasons for being in the prison.
* TroubledAbuser: She tries to explain to Soso that her defensive behavior comes out from being a member of a community which "get shat on a lot."
* VillainousFriendship:
** With Pennsatucky, who she admires and trails after. It comes to an end in the second season, however. Though the third season's finale hints they might have made up.
** A stronger case can be made for her friendship with Angie, whom she's never apart from.
* WrongGenreSavvy: She's convinced that her and Angie are [[Franchise/TheLittleMermaid Flounder and Sebastian]], "the lovable clowns". While they're really clowns, they're less than lovable and Angie rightfully starts suspecting that they might be more of an Ursula than an Ariel.

[[folder:Yoga Jones]]
!!Erica "Yoga" Jones
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2db09fae6d0651e63be8d469f52717de.jpg]]
->'''Played By:''' Constance Shulman

An older white inmate who teaches yoga.
----
* AccidentalChildKillerBackstory: Yoga Jones is in prison for accidentally shooting an 8-year-old boy with a hunting rifle (she was trying to ward deer away from her marijuana crop and he was running away from home). Her hippie, Buddhist lifestyle is how she copes with the guilt.
* TheAlcoholic: Prior to her conviction, she was (by her own admission) a drunk.
* TheAtoner: She feels terrible about her crime, and desires nothing more than a sense of redemption for it.
* BerserkButton: Bringing up her crime is a good way to get yourself bitch-slapped. When it comes to Yoga Jones, if you act shit you get hit.
* DarkSecret: The reason for her imprisonment, more so than anyone else's. She accidentally shot an eight-year-old, thinking he was one of the deer that had been eating her marijuana supply.
* DepravedBisexual: Doesn't talk about or display much in the way of sexual proclivity for most of the series, but has a drug-fueled threesome with Luschek and Judy King in season 4.
* DeadpanSnarker: She's incredibly sweet most of the time, but if you push her, she's capable of some pretty choice snark.
* DrunkWithPower: PlayedForLaughs. Uses her status as Judy King's roommate to get a seltzer water maker.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Twice over. Given the context for her backstory, she's almost certainly in jail for possession with intent to distribute, rather than the involuntary manslaughter of an eight year old boy she tortures herself over. This means she's serving harder time due to the War on Drugs than she otherwise would, but doesn't care because she feels she deserves it.
* GranolaGirl: She has a gentle hippie mentality.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She spends most of season four lecturing Judy King about how ashamed she should be of "living like the 1%" in an overcrowded prison, yet enjoys the perks of being her roommate to the fullest.
* NiceGirl: Even when paired with Sister Ingalls, she appears as the sweetest of the duo. She often appears to be the most consistently kind-hearted and caring person in the entire show.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Her given name is Erica, but everyone calls her 'Yoga'.
* SitcomArchnemesis: Her relationship with her new bunkmate Judy King, which culminates in a threesome.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sister Ingalls]]
!!Sister Jane Ingalls
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sisterengalls_1058.jpg]]
->'''Played By:''' Beth Fowler

A nun who helps with services in the prison chapel. Jane is in prison for chaining herself in place at a nuclear weapons base during a political protest. In spite of her faith, Jane accepts Sophia as a close friend and strongly dislikes Pennsatucky's religious fundamentalism. She is shown to be rather modernistic and "hip" in her faith and views.
----
* ChekhovsSkill: As a nun, she has extensive knowledge of the Bible. She utilizes this to spread the teachings of Catholicism, and also... trick a Rabbi into thinking she is Jewish in order to eat Kosher meals in prison.
* CoolOldLady: Very good at offering helpful insight to Sophia and can deadpan deflect Pennsatucky's attempts at claiming 'Third Amendment rights' by quoting the actual Third Amendment from memory. She is also one of the few non-Jewish inmates (if not the only one) that manages to fool the rabbi to keep eating kosher meals. She's also fairly progressive on LGBT issues and sympathetic to people regardless of their religion or background.
* CrisisOfFaith: In season two, it's apparent that she throws herself into activism because God only ever "mumbles" when she talks to him.
* EveryoneHasStandards: A rare good example. Even as a nun who attempts to be compassionate to everyone, Soso annoys her to no end. The fact that she tells Soso to [[BigShutUp "shut the fuck up"]] really establishes how annoying Soso is.
* GoodShepherd: Even not compared to Pennsatucky, she's possibly the kindest and most level-headed character (let alone Christian) on the show.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: A possible contributing factor to the guards being unwilling to put her in the SHU. Her bad behavior is easily written off due to her status as a nun.
* ItsAllAboutMe: She was excommunicated by the Catholic Church because a lot of her preachings and demonstrations seemed to be more about showcasing herself to the public and hogging the spotlight out of a desire for attention.
* NotSoAboveItAll: She is one of the women who attempt to convince the rabbi they're Jewish in order to get the access to kosher meals. And she is the only one who succeeds. Did we mention she's a nun?
* NunTooHoly: Frequently invoked by others, but subverted: people try to demonize her for various reasons by claiming she murdered someone.
* OddFriendship: Though Sophia initially saddled up to her to try and get her post-menopausal estrogen supplements, the two became legitimate friends.
* PokeThePoodle: Her attempts to get sent to SHU to find Sophia, while normally a pretty good excuse to get in, are not good enough when the SHU is overcrowded. She eventually gets in when she slaps Gloria, though she has to amplify it by delivering an awkward, attempting to be racist insult afterwards.
* PrecisionFStrike: Tells Soso to [[BigShutUp "shut the fuck up"]] in season 2.
* PutOnABus: After being sent to SHU in Season 4 to try and help Sophia [[spoiler:, Season 5 reveals she was compassionately released when she contracted pneumonia. Her current state of health and whereabouts are unknown.]]
* TokenGoodTeammate: She's one of the few inmates who could be called outright good.

An older Italian-American inmate who was one of the first to befriend Piper. Piper learns that when [=DeMarco=] first arrived in prison many years earlier, she had a heart attack, and now sleeps with a face mask and CPAP machine. [=DeMarco=] is a constant roommate of Miss Rosa, and they seem to have a steady stream of newbies who stay in their room until the newbies are assigned permanent bunks.
----
* AscendedExtra: After sparing appearances in season 1, Anita has more appearances in season 2, then even more in Season 3.
* CoolOldLady: While not elderly, she's been in Litchfield as long as Red, and helps show Piper the ropes and is just a generally cool person.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In the first season she mentions that she would never let that "he/she"(Sophia) touch her hair, however in season two she is seen having her hair treated by Sophia without fuss.
* DeadpanSnarker: Anita definitely has her moments of sarcasm.
* DirtyOldWoman: When the guards were targeting Latina inmates for frisking, Anita convinced a particularly handsome guard to frisk her, insisting she was Hispanic. This was clearly done so she could get felt up by him.
* TheMentor: To Piper, briefly.

->'''Played By:''' Tamara Torres

This unnamed inmate is frequently seen hogging the phones at Litchfield while crying.
----
* AscendedExtra: To a degree. She is seen more frequently in the third season and has more lines, but she still doesn't get a name and cries in her every appearance.
* {{Irony}}: Possibly unintended, but in the first scene of the first episode Piper is crying as she is about to go to prison, and says she's afraid people will see it as a sign of weakness and attack her. As this character is loudly crying in front of everyone every time she shows up, and no one pays her any mind, it seems Piper's fears were unfounted.
* JewishMother: Seems to play out this trope from the few lines she actually has during her phone conversations
* NoNameGiven: She's only known as [[RunningGag The Weeping Woman]].
* RunningGag: Her crying by the phone.

An inmate who takes a liking to Suzanne's smut fiction.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: She is never called by her name in the show, until Season 4.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She turns out to be far more unhinged than anyone initially suspected, to the point of vindictiveness and even violence. In Season 5 [[spoiler:she stealthily messes with Humphrey's IV, resulting in him having a seizure.]]
* BuryYourGays: [[spoiler: Kukudio was a lesbian and died sometime between season 5 and 6 from a surgery gone wrong.]]
* BusCrash: In the season 5 finale, we last see Kukudio being taken out of medical by the riot officers and quite literally, placed on a bus, albeit a prison transfer bus. In season six, Alex [[spoiler: confirms that she died after a botched surgery.]]
* CloudCuckooLander: She is too weird, even for ''Suzanne''. Also, her EstablishingCharacterMoment shows her trying to strip in the yard.
* FacialHorror: Her face is swollen from the beating Suzanne gives her in season 4. [[spoiler: By the end of season 5, it's swollen up even more due to elephantiasis.]]
* {{Irony}}: Maureen is a tall, white, blond(ish) woman who begins to stalk and pursue Suzanne, among others writing her a poem, describing her sexual longings in a way that makes the pursued party uncomfortable and generally acting so weird that she manages to creep Suzanne -- yes, ''Suzanne'' -- out at one point. The situation is basically the reverse of that of Suzanne and Piper in the first season.
* KarmaHoudini: Despite being the person who is actually responsible for [[spoiler:Humphrey's death, after she blows bubbles into his IV line which cause him to have a stroke that, thanks to the lack of proper medical attention, ultimately proves fatal]], her role in it ultimately goes unnoticed, meaning that [[spoiler:Daya, who inflicted a nasty but otherwise quite survivable gunshot wound on Humphrey]] ends up being the one who takes the fall.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler: Alex states she died between season 5 and season 6, stating a surgery caused an infection that eventually lead to her death.]]
* LipstickLesbian: Kukudio is a conventionally feminine young woman and is attracted to Suzanne.
* LovableSexManiac: She is, at first glance, quite nice and quite perverted.
* StalkerWithACrush: Her interest in Suzanne starts from becoming a fan of her works, but Maureen quickly develops an infatuation with the author herself.
* {{Tsundere}}: One day she's flirting with Suzanne, the next day she's tricking Suzanne into sex only to stop halfway through and tell her off for ditching her at the cottage, the next day she's flirting with Suzanne again, the day after that she's volunteering to fistfight Suzanne at the behest of the guards.

[[caption-width-right:350:Lolly]]
->'''Played By:''' Creator/LoriPetty & Christina Brucato

* BirdsOfAFeather: When she's released from psych in season 7, she quickly becomes friends with Suzanne, who has similar mental illness problems.
* TheBusCameBack: Lori Petty was originally just a guest star in the premiere for Season 2, but she came back as a recurring character in Season 3. This made for awkward conversation when she pretended not to remember Piper after being transferred to Litchfield.
* CloudCuckooLander: Lolly is more than a little loony; she's a paranoid conspiracy theorist who isn't on speaking terms with reality.
* ConspiracyTheorist: She's eventually revealed to believe in a number of conspiracies of varying insanity. She believes the NSA is out to get her, Alex is a possible assassin, Jews control the media, and other mental things.
* CurbStompBattle: Against Aydin; she actually does stomp on him quite a few times.
* AFriendInNeed: While not exactly besties with Alex, when she sees one of the CO's strangling her to death with his belt, she does not hesitate to [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomp]] him to death.
* HiddenDepths: During her flashback; she managed to survive quite well despite being homeless, and had found a way to (temporarily) quiet "the voices."
* IntrepidReporter: In her backstory, although a tragic example since she is severely paranoid from mental illness and believes that people are out to stymy her journalist endeavours.
* LadyLooksLikeADude: Due to her [[BoyishShortHair short gray hairstyle]], she gets mistaken for a boy by the other inmates.
* TheMole: Alex originally believes that Lolly was sent by her former boss Kubra to kill her, but Lolly was actually spying on her because she's a crazy conspiracy theorist who thinks ''Alex'' is an assassin.
* MoralityPet: For Healy in Season 4; Healy is at his best when dealing with Lolly.
* NiceGirl: Underneath the insanity, she has a good heart and wants to help people.
* PutOnABusToHell: Is sent to psych at the end of Season 4. She comes back in Season 7 when psych is shut down.
* SimpletonVoice: She isn't dumb, but her high-pitched childlike voice does enhance her insanity.
* TraumaCongaLine: Her entire life has been one unending stream of misery, all stemming from her mental illness and an incompetent system that's unable to help her. The tragic thing is, Lolly is clearly intelligent and would probably be able to live a normal life with the right treatment but she's fallen through the gaps.

A young Australian inmate assigned to the prison's new garment factory with Piper. Strikingly beautiful, androgynous and intelligent, but also somewhat mysterious, she takes an immediate shine to Piper, and the two become fast friends.
----
* AdvertisedExtra: The appearance of Ruby Rose in the show has been long awaited and hyped up, but Stella turned out to be a minor character. Nevertheless, it didn't stop Rose from becoming a superstar upon the season's release, her popularity rivaling that only fellow non-main cast member Laverne Cox.
* AmbiguousGenderIdentity: Piper was appalled when Stella didn't consider herself a woman. Stella admits she only identifies as a woman because there is no other gender label option available. She is implied to be non-binary or genderfluid.
* BettyAndVeronica: Stella was the new mysterious and exciting Veronica to Alex's Betty over Piper's Archie.
* ButchLesbian: Is more androgynous in appearance and mannerisms than her LipstickLesbian love interest Piper.
* CanonForeigner: Australia, to be specific.
* DescentIntoAddiction: In season 4, during her screen time in MAX, she's shown to have a drug problem which angered her hook-up Nicky.
* KnuckleTattoos: Her knuckles spell out JUST LOVE.
* LadyLooksLikeADude: Short hair, tattoos, and only identifies as female "for lack of a better option". 352* MsFanservice: She gets a full-nude scene that is designed to showcase her beauty, particularly in front of Piper.
* MysteriousPast: Not revealed so far, except that her parents moved back to Australia. And may remain that way since she is now in Max.
* PopCulturalOsmosis: Seems to be knowledgeable about furries and [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic bronies]] and has a ''Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles'' tattoo on her body.
* PutOnABusToHell: Piper gets her sent to Max after she learns Stella stole her money.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: She exists to look hot and revolve around Piper.
* TattooedCrook: By far the most colorful of the inmates in this regard.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Tomboy to Piper's Girly Girl.

->'''Played By:''' Blair Brown

A celebrity chef who self surrenders to Litchfield after being arrested for tax evasion.
----
* AffablyEvil: She can be pretty souless, but still is charming and friendly.
* AtLeastIAdmitIt: Often gets annoyed with Yoga Jones' preaching against enjoying the luxuries of a LuxuryPrisonSuite because, like Jones, she didn't turn it down, and unlike Jones, she is open about how much she enjoys the perks of her situation.
* DepravedBisexual: She's not above having a polyamorous relationship with both her husband and boyfriend. She refers to having had make-out sessions with Nigella Lawson in the past. She also has a drug-fueled threesome with Yoga Jones and Luschek.
* FairWeatherFriend: As nice and helpful as she might seem, when the chips are down, Judy only cares about herself.
* ItsAllAboutMe: As Yoga Jones, Luscheck and Judy herself admits, her first priority is always number one. She'll help someone when it's at little expense or inconvenience to herself, or if she can get something out of it, but otherwise she'll leave 'em high and dry.
* LuxuryPrisonSuite: Due to the Litchfield administration's fear of a lawsuit, she gets considerably more space for herself than the other inmates, along with other privileges. They're ''not happy'' about this.
* LovableSexManiac: Judy is shown to be lustful and sexually adventurous, being in a polyamorous relationship with a boyfriend and husband and referencing numerous sexual escapades. This does however veer into predatory non-consensual territory when she extorts Luschek into sex and later manipulates him and Yoga into a threesome by getting them high on molly. This is mostly played for laughs, though Yoga and Luschek are clearly feeling very uncomfortable and used afterwards.
* ManipulativeBastard: Is very, very good at getting people to do whatever she wants, as Yoga Jones and Luscheck both find out.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: She's this series' {{Expy}} for Martha Stewart and Paula Deen. Acknowledged in season 5 when Cindy calls her a 'D-List Martha Stewart'.
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: She had done a puppet show with some rather politically incorrect puppets back in the 80s.
* PetTheDog: Just before [[spoiler:Poussey's death,]] she gives Poussey her actual office number to call for a job when she gets out of Litchfield.
** In Season 5, she consoles a grieving Brook and tells her [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre she's stronger than she gives herself credit for]].
** In the Series Finale, [[spoiler: she helps Taystee start a fund in Poussey's honor that will assist women who are transitioning from incarceration to life on the outside.]]
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: In keeping with her status as an {{expy}} for Paula Deen, Judy has some antiquated RacistGrandma tendencies, though she manages to hide them behind a very charming and friendly mask.
* SomeOfMyBestFriendsAreX: When the controversy about her racially... outdated puppet show gets leaked, she protests that she's not racist because some of her employees are black, and she donates to a lot of inner city charities.
* SouthernBelle: Albeit an ageing one, this is the persona she uses.
* SupremeChef: She's a beloved celebrity chef who had her own show.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: She's famous and beloved for her sweet, caring, charming, traditional Southern mother-type persona, but this is just a front she uses to get what she wants.

An inmate who grew up on the streets and one of the youngest inmates, Miller is a drug addict and lesbian who sports a tattoo on her throat and trademark blonde cornrows. While outside prison, Tricia showed kleptomaniac tendencies, often taking things that she promised herself she would later pay for. She kept a list of all the things she ever stole with the intention of settling all her debts when she had the money.
----
* AbusiveParents: She makes reference to her ''rapist stepdad''.
* ButtMonkey: She's had a terrible life. And it ends in a terrible way.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: It's heavily implied that Tricia's father sexually abused her, which led to her living on the streets and resorting to petty crime and shoplifting to survive.
* DumbBlonde: Tricia is a sweet girl, but is cursed by her lack of education as much as an innate lack of intelligence.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She had blonde hair and was a sincerely kind and good-natured person.
* LipstickLesbian: Downplayed, but being Mercy's alternative for Big Boo, definitely makes her the feminine one in comparison.
* NiceGirl: One of the most sincere and genuinely nice inmates of the cast. Even girls who didn't regularly interact with her comment on her "good vibe."
* ListOfTransgressions: Keeps a notebook with a list of everything she's ever stolen, so she can eventually make amends.
* PrettyFlyForAWhiteGuy: She keeps her hair in cornrows, a hairstyle more common among black men and women than white people.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: Discussed by her former clique.

A minor character caught up in a love triangle between her ex Big Boo and her lover Tricia and is scheduled to leave prison soon.
----
* LipstickLesbian: She is very feminine in comparison to her prison lovers Big Boo and Tricia.
* SituationalSexuality: According to her ex Big Boo, Mercy wasn't into girls prior to going to prison and is only dating Tricia because women are the only options available in Lichfield prison. 441* AxCrazy: Her ultimate goal is [[spoiler:to murder Frieda as payback for adding 30 years to her sentence.]] She was also this in her youth, considering it was her idea to [[spoiler:murder her kid sister Debbie along with Barb, and Carol was even drawing out ideas in her notebook.]]
* BigBadDuumvirate: With her sister Barb in season six, though Carol is arguably the more vicious of the two.
* CainAndAbel: Has this relationship with Barb, and both of them were like this with their younger sister Debbie, who seemed to have no idea about it, making it a CainAndAbelAndSeth situation.
* CatchPhrase: "Bull-true."
* DesperatelyCravesAffection: According to her actresses, she is this. Evidenced in flashbacks by her attention-seeking, overly physical and intimate interactions with others.
* EvilIsPetty: [[spoiler: Carol and Barb feud for decades and ultimately kill each other because both of them claimed that the 'glass of ice' story happened to them. Oh, and they killed their little sister [[DisproportionateRetribution because they had to move because of her.]]]]
* FourEyesZeroSoul: She is one of the few inmates seen wearing glasses as both a teenager and an elderly woman and one of the [[BigBad Big Bads]] of Season 6.
* HotBlooded: As a young woman, she was quick to anger and easily set off. Whether it was going after her kid sister with a hatchet, choking someone for asking for one of her jawbreakers, or screaming a war cry before running shiv-in-hand at Barbara, Carol did not half-ass her aggression.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler: The last time we see her, she has a shiv in her back while crawling to her death.]]
* LargeHam: When she was younger. She was... expressive, to say the least.
* ManipulativeBitch: She and Barb manipulate their respective gangs into fighting each other, but [[spoiler: actually they just want to cause a distraction in order to infiltrate Florida and kill Frieda.]]
* MutualKill: [[spoiler: She and Barb kill each other in the season finale over the ice story.]]
* PreMortemOneLiner: A terrifying one to her [[spoiler:little sister, Debbie]], going along with her natural LargeHam tendencies.

* SelfServingMemory: She and Barb feud over each claiming a "glass of ice" story happened to them. It turns out [[spoiler: It didn't happen to either of them but another waitress who told them the story.]]
* TheSociopath: Not only does she not show any doubt or regret about [[spoiler: killing her little sister by locking her up in a car and pushing it into a frozen lake]], she enjoys doing it.
* SweetTooth: Specifically refers to herself as one and is almost always seen with a lollipop or jawbreaker in her mouth.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Almost always seen with a lollipop in her mouth.
* TheUnfavorite: Bitterly reflects that her mother won't visit her in prison. To add insult to injury her mom still visits Barbara, who is just as responsible for [[spoiler: Debbie's murder]] as Carol is.
* WomanChild: Doesn't seem to have mentally progressed past adolescence. Makes sense, since she's been incarcerated since her teens.

* HateSink: She's shown to be a mean-spirited and extremely obnoxious BigBadWannabe in all her appearances. Even with her FreudianExcuse, it's hard to find her sympathetic.
* {{Jerkass}}: She is relentlessly unpleasant to Piper.
* TheLoad: Causes more problems for Carol than she actually solves.

* MutualKill: [[spoiler: She and Carol kill each other in the season finale over the ice story.]]
* MushroomSamba: Played horrifically straight when Daddy gives her bath salts, making her have horrible hallucinations.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Late in the season she seemingly refuses to believe that Nicky sabotaged an attempt to attack Carol and some of her gang members, even though it's incredibly obvious to everyone else there that she's responsible. Since we later find out that [[spoiler:she and Carol never actually wanted each other dead in the first place]], it's likely that she refused to have Nicky punished since having Nicky suddenly turn up dead or injured would likely lead to a further ramping up of security and [[spoiler:disrupt her and Carol's actual plan]].
* SelfServingMemory: She and Carol have been feuding over each claiming a story about their waitressing days happened to them. The final scene of the season reveals [[spoiler: it was never either of them but another waitress who told them the story.]]
