His unwillingness to allow his allies to die, even when it's in their job description to put their lives on the line for him and rationally it can't always be avoided, makes him unable to emotionally handle any personal losses, and puts him in danger of a breakdown if an opponent manages to seriously endanger or kill one of his friends. His bodyguards Lan Fan and Fu have to resort to trickery to get Ling to back off so they can make a sacrifice for his benefit, and later [[spoiler: the death of]] the latter puts him into a HeroicBSOD.
