* FatalFlaw: Apathy and blind obedience. The majority of the crew has a bad habit of being uncaring about others' problems and being reliant on the advice of its immature leader (i.e., with their cold treatment of Renton). It's this combination that leads to not only Renton running away, but also to nearly its own doom in "Morning Glory". It's through accepting Renton as a fellow crew member and Eureka's destined partner that it manages to overcome its flaws and come closer together as a family.

The main male protagonist. An ordinary boy bored with his [[NothingExcitingEverHappensHere ordinary life]] and with dreams of becoming a professional [[SkySurfing lifter]], Renton's life is turned upside down when Eureka enters his life. He is one of the only people besides Eureka herself who can pilot the series's signature [[HumongousMecha LFO]], the Nirvash typeZERO.

----
* TenMinuteRetirement: He quits as a member of Gekkostate after having his MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment, but he's back into action by the time "Morning Glory" rolls around.
* AcePilot: While he did have some initial trouble, Renton later proves to have some serious piloting talent.
* ActionDad: He's an AcePilot and eventually becomes the adoptive father of Eureka's children.
* AdoptivePeerParent: In the epilogue, Eureka's children are adopted by Renton as well, who is 16, as Maurice, Maeter, and Linck all are shown to have the last name Thurston.
* AllLovingHero: If you live on the planet, Renton ''will'' want to protect you.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: No matter what happens, Renton will do anything to protect Eureka.
* AscendedFanboy: He greatly admired the crew of Gekkostate before becoming a member.
* BadassAdorable: A cute, 14-year-old kid who becomes an AcePilot.
* BadassBoast: During "Morning Glory," Renton delivers one to Holland when he tells that latter that he only came back to the Gekko to look for Eureka.
* BattleCouple: He co-pilots the Nirvash together with Eureka, who later becomes his girlfriend.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Renton desperately wished for a more "exciting life" and to become a Gekkostate member. However, the mess he got himself into and the poor treatment he received from the rest of Gekkostate had him question his earlier wishes.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's a good and friendly boy, but when he snaps, he snaps ''hard''.
* BigDamnHeroes: He pulls an epic one in "Morning Glory" to rescue Eureka towards the end of the episode.
* BigSisterWorship: He deeply loved his older sister, Diane. Her memories has a profound effect on him.
* BookDumb: It's noted that his grades in school are pretty awful. However, he turns out to be a TeenGenius.
* BrainyBrunette: He's a brunette and while he may be BookDumb, he's also shown to be a GadgeteerGenius.
* BullyMagnet: He was ridiculed by fellow classmates who thought of him as weird for always looking at his Compac Drive when it suddenly read "Eureka" or when he remembered his sister.
* ButtMonkey: {{Deconstruction}}. For much of the first half of the anime, he is never safe from the Gekko crew's abuse, up to the point that he runs away. Fortunately, he returns to the Gekko after rescuing Eureka towards the end of "Morning Glory".
* CantGetAwayWithNuthin: He tries to run away from Gekkostate all of one time... and happens to go to a rave... except he forgets that one of the members of Gekkostate was a ''formerly famous raver among the DJ circuit'' and the DJ at that particular rave happens to be someone he knows and tattles on him.
* TheChampion: His main motive is always to be Eureka's protector. She's the only reason he puts up with and comes back to Gekkostate.
* CharacterTics: According to the DVD commentary of Episode 1, all males in the Thurston family snort when they become angry.
* ChastityCouple: His romance with Eureka is one of the major elements of the story, but they don't even kiss until the final episode.
* TheChosenOne: A literal one. Eureka chose him by falling in love with him.
* ClassicalAntiHero: At first, Renton starts off as an insecure, easily scared kid pushed around by the Gekkostate crew, especially Holland. He finally [[GrewASpine got tougher]] and [[CharacterDevelopment more mature]].
* CostumeEvolution: Renton discards the outfit he has worn for the last 49 episodes and dons a new one in the GrandFinale before [[spoiler:going to save Eureka]]: He uses an entirely new jacket, loses the fanny pack, sports black shoes with red lines, and dark pants.
* DeathGlare: In "Morning Glory", he gives one to Holland upon his return to the Gekkostate, especially when he does his BadassBoast.
* DeclarationOfProtection: He swears to protect Eureka.
* {{Determinator}}:
** Renton is a person with strong resolve who is willing to do anything to accomplish something that is important to him without hesitation.
** In the manga, he gets ''shot in the gut'' and ''stabbed'' by enemy soldiers, but managed to carry Eureka around for a bit before passing out and later pilots the Nirvash while still injured.
* DontAsk: In HI-EVOLUTION 1, Renton, ''understandably'', says he doesn't want to talk about the "KLF pilot with the wedding ring" incident. Every scene or hint about it didn't appear in this movie.
* DevotedToYou: Once she finally reciprocates his feelings, Eureka becomes hopelessly devoted to him and can barely stand being away from him.
* TheDogBitesBack: By the second half of the series, Renton rebels against Holland to the point that he decides to give the latter a BadassBoast and rescue Eureka himself.
* DoggedNiceGuy: To Eureka. He falls for her at first sight, but waits patiently a long time for her to return his feelings.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Despite some of the things he has done for them, everyone at Gekkostate (sans Eureka) hardly show him the respect he deserves. At first. All of his respect is gained by the time "Morning Glory" rolls around.
* TheDulcineaEffect: He's ready to do anything to protect Eureka even when he just met her and doesn't even know her name.
* EtTuBrute: His reaction to [[spoiler:the Beams' true intentions to kill Eureka and the Gekkostate, Holland included]].
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: His hairstyle starts to be different during the final episodes of the anime, which probably signifies his [[ComingOfAgeStory Coming of Age]].
* ExtremeDoormat: At first, Renton's frequently pushed around by his fellow crew mates whenever his relationship with Eureka is brought up.
* FailureHero: Momentarily feels like this in the finale, thinking he failed to save his father, his sister, and Eureka.
* FriendlessBackground: He doesn't appear to have any friends, which is further implied in his inability to pass the ball in soccer as he never actually had anyone to play ''with''.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: A less positive example since he's a pleasant and amicable guy who joins the Gekkostate out of admiration. Unfortunately for him, almost everyone there has expressed their dismay about his quirks when he first joins, at least until he gains their respect by the time of "Morning Glory". Other characters like Eureka and the Beams treat him kindly, earning him more respect from them.
* GadgeteerGenius: Though it doesn't come up much, Renton is a very competent mechanic. He disassembles Dominic's bike in mere moments to blackmail him, knowing Dominic couldn't fix it without him.
* GoodParents: His response after [[spoiler: Maurice points a gun at him]], is to say he loves him as much as Eureka does, and he'll always do his best for him.
* GrewASpine: He starts off as a pushover and at one point, tries to run away from Gekkostate when he gets sick of fighting for people who treat him badly or don't care about him anyway. Due to the impact of the war, seeing how the lives of everyone around him are affected, and understanding how everyone depends on him due to being TheChosenOne to stop the war between the Scub Coral and humans, he gradually became more brave, mature, and confident in himself.
* HeroicBSOD:
** He goes through a brief one after his MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment and ended up [[spoiler:[[TenMinuteRetirement running away from Gekkostate for a while]]. [[HesBack It doesn't last]]]].
** Later on, Renton has yet another ''major'' one when [[spoiler:the Beams]] are killed.
** In the manga, after Holland reveals the truth about his father.
* HiddenDepths:
** Renton was introduced as BookDumb in the first episode, but it's later revealed that he's actually a genius, see his TeenGenius section for more details.
** He shows surprising skill at soccer.
* HumanPackMule: He's made carry all the bags when he goes shopping with Talho and Eureka.
* IAmWhatIAm: Says this a lot, especially as he tried to climb out of his father's shadow early in the series.
* IdiotHero: "Idiot" is a stretch. All of his failures come from naïvete and he gets over it thanks to CharacterDevelopment.
* IGotBigger: In seasons three and four, he noticeably grows taller and mature, which is mentioned by several members of the Gekkostate on numerous occasions. By the time he is 16, he has matured considerably and nearly overtowers Eureka, who had been about the same height as him.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: The first episode has Renton monologue about how dull his entire life has been and his desire to do something worthwhile.
* InnocentBlueEyes: This serve to represent his initial naïvete in the beginning.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: He makes comments about the importance of image that get Eureka reasonably self-conscious about her scars and he doesn't realize it. He also says her CosmeticCatastrophe is awful without realizing she was trying to look pretty for him.
* InsecureLoveInterest: The first half of the series has Renton fear Eureka thinks of him as "uncool" or "pathetic".
* InterspeciesRomance: He's a human in love with Eureka, a Coralian who eventually reciprocates.
* IWillWaitForYou: In the manga ending, Renton refuses to acknowledge that Eureka is dead after the Scub Coral leaves the planet and will continue to wait upon the day she returns to him. [[spoiler:The final page indicates they might have finally reunited after 2 years.]]
* JumpedAtTheCall: {{Deconstruction}}. Renton's decision to quickly join the Gekkostate, the crew he's admired for a long time, comes back to bite him later on. One, he doesn't know ''exactly'' what they're doing on their journeys. Second, he never took into account that badly they would treat him.
* KidHero: 14-years-old at the beginning and the main male protagonist.
* LikeASonToMe: The Beams genuinely cared about him and thought of him as a surrogate son.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Eureka. After he flees from Gekkostate, she is constantly in grief at Renton's absence and determined to see him to the point that she departed from Gekko behind everyone's back, including her three kids, to find Renton. She was finally emotionally at ease when she was reunited with Renton.
* LoveAtFirstSight: He falls deeply in love with Eureka the moment she crashlands near his grandfather's house.
* MeaningfulAppearance: Renton uses a pair of sporty sneakers called Clies throughout the series and freaks out whenever bad things happen to them like when they are scorched. By the very end of the first series, his shoes are worn out to the point of total ruin, with the tips beginning to tear loose from the bottoms. And Renton couldn't give a damn if they were in tatters, because by this point, his childish cares have all been overridden with a desire to be there for Eureka. Instead, he dons totally new shoes and ditches the ratty Clies for good, a symbolic shedding of his childhood and ComingOfAge.
* MissingMom: Renton's mom is only mentioned twice in the original series, in the first episode as being deceased by Axel as he mentions withdrawing Renton from school and wondering how he's going to ever explain it to her (which depresses Renton), and in Episode 15, when he goes to the place where his dad supposedly met her and fell in love and encounters her brother, his uncle Yucatan Iglesias. It is implied but never said upfront that his birth [[DeathByChildbirth resulted in his mother's death.]] [[KickTheDog Matthieu should have kept his mouth shut when he asked if his mom taught him manners, 'cause poor Renton didn't get to have a mommy]]. Such is made clear when the photo of Adroc holding baby Renton lacks a mother. The final episode reveals a family record indicating a Blau Thurston (presumably Blau Iglesias Thurston) was Adroc's spouse and is deceased, her date of death implying she died giving birth to Renton.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:When saving Holland, he goes insane and pounds a [=KLF=] into pulp. A bloody arm with a wedding band attached drops out, clicking the realization that he has been killing people and has killed someone. Causes TheseHandsHaveKilled which results in ThouShaltNotKill.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler:The deaths of the Beams had a particular effect on him, making him very guilt-ridden for unintentionally leading them to invade the Gekko and not doing anything to prevent their deaths.]]
* NaiveNewcomer: Renton starts out as one when he joins the Gekkostate. He's a jovial kid who hates his dull life and wishes to have more freedom. Too bad Gekkostate sees him as a gawky, timid, 14-year old snot nose whose sole purpose is to be their ButtMonkey. Renton is enraged that the crew sees him as an immature baby whom they give no respect. Come several episodes later, he's had enough, blows his stack in a firefight, and slaughters a whole KLF squadron ''very'' horrifically. Shortly afterward, Eureka's pissed at the whole crew for egging him all this time, which causes them to drop all ideas of messing with him and treat him as an equal.
* NiceGuy: He is a very outgoing and emotional person possessing strong ideals and compassion.
* OneHeadTaller: He's taller than Eureka once he turns 16.
* PoorCommunicationKills: For some reason, Renton thought the KLFs he fought and destroyed, were manipulated by an AI or by remote and everyone in the Gekkostate took for granted the boy was aware. Renton didn't take well the [[TheseHandsHaveKilled truth.]]
* PrimaryColorChampion: His attire, pre- and post-CostumeEvolution, are colored with white, red, and blue.
* ProdigalHero: He avoids Gekkostate for a while after realizing that he accidentally killed innocent people. Then, by the time of "Morning Glory", Renton returns to the Gekko and rescues Eureka.
* RageAgainstTheMentor: By the time of "Morning Glory", he's willing to call out Holland on his behavior after he returns to the Gekko to search for Eureka.
* RaisedByGrandparents: Grandfather, rather. Sister, too, except she disappeared some time later.
* RedIsHeroic: Red is his main color scheme -- on the sleeves of his jackets, lining of his hover board, and linings of his shoes.
* ReplacementGoldfish: The Beams, who were unable to have children of their own, apparently saw Renton as their surrogate son.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: {{Subverted|Trope}}. After his MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment, he decides enough is enough and flees from Gekkostate. But it doesn't last and he decides to return for Eureka.
* ShipperOnDeck: With Eureka, Renton helped Anemone understand her feelings for Dominic.
* SingleTargetSexuality: The first novel, ''Blue Monday'', reveals Renton only went on one date with a classmate, but never had any romantic feelings for any girl until he met Eureka.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Images of Adroc show that Renton took ''all'' of his looks from his father, the only difference being that Adroc is more older looking and has a mustache.
* TeenGenius: Renton is a teenager and his genius is seen with his skills in mechanical engineering, his ability to pilot Nirvash, and when he invents the first IFO by combining his knowledge of the Scub Coral and [=LFOs=].
* TheseHandsHaveKilled: He completely flips when he realizes that there were people inside the [=KLF=]s he was destroying, and never quite gets over it. He eventually takes up a ThouShaltNotKill stance.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Eventually takes this stance. [[spoiler:The anime finale shows him making one exception to this to destroy the antibody Coralians threatening the Gekko before heading off to save Eureka.]]
* TinySchoolboy: Downplayed. The first novel, ''Blue Monday'', reveals Renton is the third shortest boy in his school.
* TookALevelInBadass: At first, he was throwing up in the cockpit in the earlier episodes. He eventually becomes the savior of the world by the finale.
* TookALevelInCynic: While always an idealist in the end, he goes through the process of shifting from an AscendedFanboy to realizing what kind of mess he's really gotten himself into.
* TragicKeepsake: He keeps Charles' wedding ring with him all the way up to the finale, as a reminder of the world he wants to save.
* UnderstandingBoyfriend: After Eureka is revealed as a Coralian, Renton does not reject her as she feared but rather accepts her for who she is, not what she is.
* UnstoppableRage: Renton goes brutally psycho over his opponents during the finale of "Substance Abuse." It's because of the deadly combination of his love for Eureka, his resentment of Holland and frustration with his own immaturity. The result: Blood, a dismembered arm, and a horrific scream.
* WellDoneSonGuy:
** Though somewhat of a celebrity, being the son of a savior, Renton feels uncomfortable being the son of Adroc Thurston. His surname is recognized everywhere he travels, and he constantly feels as if he lives in his father's shadow. At first, anyway.
** He wants to earn the approval of the Gekkostate crew and eventually does so by the time of "Morning Glory".
* WideEyedIdealist: He had a rather idealistic, but naïve outlook on the world and Gekkostate. Thank to character development, he gained a more realistic view.

-> '''Voiced by:''' Creator/KaoriNazuka (JP), Creator/StephanieSheh (EN)

The main female protagonist. Eureka is a mysterious girl with an affinity for machines who [[EmotionlessGirl has trouble opening up to other people]] until she crash-lands her [[HumongousMecha LFO]], the Nirvash, on Renton's house.

----
* AcePilot: She was a very experienced LFO pilot to begin with. She begins to falter in her skills as her depression grows worse and worse, and she seems to eventually retire from piloting altogether.
* ActionGirl: She's a very competent pilot.
* ActionGirlfriend: Her arrival changes Renton's life and allows him to join Gekkostate and become Nirvash's pilot.
* ActionMom: She's an AcePilot and the adoptive mother of three children.
* AdoptivePeerParent: Eureka has three adopted children and she's only about 14-16.
* TheAgeless: Her physical age never changes. In flashbacks set nearly a decade earlier, she looked exactly the same as she does in the present.
* AntiHero: To an extent, with some [[ByronicHero byronic traits]]. She's rude, cold, standoffish, and until very late in the series has no problems killing people if it means lining the Gekkostate's wallet. She amends her ways as she becomes closer to Renton.
* TheAtoner: Has shades of this in regards to her past in the SOF, and it becomes amplified when [[spoiler: the Antibody Coralians show up and start killing people.]]
* BadassAdorable: A cute, MysticalWaif who is an AcePilot.
* BattleCouple: With Renton. They both pilot the Nirvash together and eventually become a couple.
* BecomeARealBoy: Eureka attempts to become more "human" in several ways, though they all tend to backfire on her.
* BelatedLoveEpiphany: Eureka realizes her feelings for Renton upon learning of his departure in episode 24.
* BizarreAlienBiology: She does not age - or at least does so at a much slower rate than humans, has a transparent, neon green layer of skin under her outermost layer, eventually sprouts wings, etc. It furthers her feelings of alienation from others due to her obviously nonhuman nature.
* BlankSlate: The reason for her existence. The Coralians wanted to know what humans would write on the slate.
* BlemishedBeauty: After her close call with being encased in scub, Eureka gets some vein-like scars on the left side of her face, her hair is left as a short, jagged mess and she loses her eyebrows. Although she still looks decently cute, she eventually starts to worry she might not look good enough for Renton even though he still likes her. Despite her previous insecurities, Eureka declines Sakuya's offer to heal her facial scars because she considers they're the outward proof of what she has been through.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Along with concepts such as love, Eureka doesn't understand morality in the same way humans do - this is another thing Renton helps her clear up, and understanding the gravity of her actions [[spoiler:leads her into a breakdown that lasts much of the series]].
* BlueIsHeroic: Eureka is the show's heroine and her main color scheme is blue.
* BodyHorror: When Eureka's Coralian features begin to show towards the end of the series, one of the first stages of her transformation included growing giant luminescent boils growing all over the left side of her body.
* TheCameo: In ''New Wave'', she [[spoiler:shows up at the end, after Sumner delivers the Nirvash to her and Holland]].
* CharacterExaggeration: The manga makes her a full-blown EmotionlessGirl in the beginning instead of merely reserved and socially awkward. She's more stoic and emotionally distant, even to her children.
* ChasteHeroine: At first, she doesn't know a thing about romance. She doesn't even know how to get pregnant with a baby. She does grow out of it as she falls in love with Renton.
* ChastityCouple: Her romance with Renton is one of the major elements of the story, but they don't even kiss until the final episode.
* TheChooserOfTheOne: She chooses Renton to be her partner after realizing she's in love with him.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: She is introduced when she accidentally demolishes Renton's home, and later burns what is left of it so its ''soul can move on''. Steadily gets deconstructed, as her inability to fit in with others actually bothers her immensely.
* TheComicallySerious: The "comically" part is [[DeconstructedTrope stretched]], but her serious attitude is often contrasted with her more laid-back allies for laughs from time to time.
* CosmeticCatastrophe: In Episode 36, Eureka tries out makeup in an attempt to look pretty for Renton. This backfires as she ends up looking like a clown and Renton even asks her if her children did that to her as a prank.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She was once a ChildSoldier and killed people as a result.
* DefectorFromDecadence: She abandoned the SDF with Holland prior to the beginning of the series because she realized they were making her kill for evil.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Eureka was an EmotionlessGirl who hardly emote to anyone that wasn't her children. Falling in love with Renton makes Eureka open up emotionally and develop her humanity.
* DemonicPossession: In the manga, Eureka is briefly possessed by a Coralian "ghost" in order to bring her and Renton to the Scub Coral.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Eureka's the secondary focal character after Renton.
* DevotedToYou: Renton falls desperately in love with her the moment he meets her, not caring to put up with her initial lack of interest in him and Gekkostate crew's constant abuse just so he can be by her side and protect her.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: In the manga, [[spoiler:she DisappearsIntoLight in Renton's arms]].
* DisappearsIntoLight: Her ultimate fate in the manga. [[spoiler:Upon the Scub Coral's demise, Eureka's body disintegrates into lights. However, whether she's actually dead is left ambiguous.]]
* DisappointedInYou: By "Morning Glory", she doesn't even bother to show how disappointed she is in Holland for what he's done.
* EmotionlessGirl: She originally didn't emote at all and only went along with the orders she was given. She started developing emotions after adopting her children, but she still had some difficulty understanding and expressing them until she fell in love with Renton. This gets played up in the manga.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Eureka has a circle parallel to the iris.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: She gets several hairstyle changes reflecting... other changes about her.
* FreakinessShame: When Eureka's Coralian attributes begin to manifest themselves, her left arm sheds its skin and she grows a pair of green, butterfly-like wings. At first, she is worried Renton will reject her new form, but Renton admires her new wings and thinks she has become even more beautiful.
* FriendlessBackground: She doesn't have any friends, though doesn't seem to mind. Her companionship with her fellow pilot Renton becomes her first real human contact.
* GoodIsNotNice: She's kind and, eventually, a pacifist, but her coldness and lack of social aptitude renders her intimidating - Matthieu lampshades this, stating that she simply isn't approachable.
* GoodParents: She starts out inexperienced and aloof, but she loves her adopted kids dearly. Her real test comes when Maurice [[spoiler:points a gun on Renton]]. She gently talks him down, reaffirms how much she loves him, and rescues him from doing something he'd regret for the rest of his life.
* GoOutWithASmile: In the manga, [[spoiler:she smiles at Renton before she DisappearsIntoLight.]]
* GrowingWings: In the final episodes, Eureka undergoes a mysterious transformation that includes the sprouting of bright green butterfly wings in her back.
* HairReboot: She spends a significant portion (episodes 21-41) of the series with her hair as the short, jagged mess left behind after her close call with being encased in scub, but it grows back instantly when she speaks with Sakuya.
* HeroicBSOD: In the manga, when Renton, in his own HeroicBSOD, told her to leave him alone when she tried giving him some fruits to cheer him up.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Fairly early on she sinks into part of the Coral Scub, almost dying in the process, though in her lamentation states that she would absolutely deserve such.
* HumanAlien: A Coralian in human form.
* HumanityIsInfectious: As time goes by, she begins to act less a socially awkward girl and more like an actual person as parts of her human side begin to emerge.
* IJustWantToBeBeautiful: In Episode 36, she tries to make herself look prettier upon realizing the importance of beauty and due to being somewhat disfigured at the time. After a CosmeticCatastrophe incident, Renton lets her know she doesn't have to change her appearance to make him like her because he already loves her for who she is.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Introduced this way - she burns the remains of Renton's home down, and when he objects to this she simply smiles. It later turns out she was trying to help, somehow.
* InterspeciesRomance: She's a Coralian and her eventual boyfriend Renton is human.
* IWillFindYou: Upon realizing that Holland is unable to search for Renton, Eureka sets off to do it herself.
* KillTheParentRaiseTheChild: Maurice, Maeter, and Linck are the children of some people Eureka killed when she was in the SOF. She adopted them to atone for orphaning them.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The Light Feminine to Talho and Anemone's Dark Feminine. Eureka is more modest and naive than the sexy adult Talho. She's also much calmer and gentler than the mentally unstable and violent Anemone.
* LoveHurts: In the manga, she learns how much it can hurt to love someone when Renton hurts her feelings during his HeroicBSOD. It goes to the point where she temporarily decides to never care about anyone again so she doesn't have to feel pain anymore.
* MachineEmpathy: She's in tune with the Nirvash's feelings. She also treats any other machine as a living thing.
* MaternallyChallenged: She's raising three orphans despite knowing little to nothing about taking care of kids. As a result, she spoils them and gets them presents that aren't too appropriate, such as textbooks that are too advanced for them.
* MessyHair: She loses a significant amount of hair after being absorbed by the Scub Coral in the 19th episode and what is left of it is rather messy. After episode 41, it grows back to a bob haircut.
* MiniDressOfPower: Her default outfit is a blue and white mini dress. She wears it when piloting Nirvash.
* ModestyShorts: She wears a pair of shorts under her short dress.
* MoralityPet: To [[GoodIsNotNice Holland]]. Besides [[NumberTwo Talho]], Eureka is the only one of Gekkostate that Holland doesn't take his anger out on.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: The first emotion she ever experienced 3 years ago was horror at the inhumane act she committed when she realized she orphaned the three children she would later adopt.
* MysticalWaif: The enigma that she presents - at first what and who exactly she is, and later why the Coral Scub would create her in order to interact with humans - is a major plot element.
* NoBrows: She loses her eyebrows after being absorbed by the Scub Coral. She regains them after talking to Sakuya, along with her hair growing back to a bob haircut.
* NoSocialSkills: Due to her backstory as a {{Tykebomb}}, she does not even know what is "cool", [[WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove what love is]] and how to be pregnant with a baby. She eventually becomes a more sociable person towards the end of the series, thanks to the influence of Renton.
* NonhumanLoverReveal: She is later revealed as a Coralian and fears that Renton will reject her, but he rather accepts her for who she is, not what she is.
* NotSoStoic: In the manga, the first time she shows emotion is when she breaks down in tears after she confesses her dark past as a soldier to Renton.
* PainfulTransformation: Growing large, green wings out of your back is ''not'' a pleasant experience.
* ParentalSubstitute: She's an adoptive mother to Linck, Maeter and Maurice. In a dark twist, it's because she orphaned them.
* PhlebotinumGirl: A young alien girl and the key to piloting the Nirvash who was used and manipulated by the government and blindly followed their orders until she realized what she was doing was wrong and defected along with Holland.
* {{Protectorate}}: Renton's main motivation is to protect Eureka.
* TheQuietOne: At first. She becomes more talkative as she becomes more human, though only around Renton - she's practically a wall compared to her copilots.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue (quiet, reserved, and calm) to Anemone's red (loud, emotional, and violent).
* ReiAyanamiExpy: Short light bluish hair, purple eyes, pale skin, HumongousMecha pilot, HumanAlien, MysticalWaif, NoSocialSkills, an ill girl, her boss is the only person she's close to until she falls in love with the main character and started off as an EmotionlessGirl as a result of her {{Tykebomb}} upbringing, prior to a traumatic event that would trigger her CharacterDevelopment, which then was accelerated much further by meeting her LoveInterest.
* SafetyInIndifference: In the manga, after realizing LoveHurts, she goes through a period of refusing to feel, deciding that it's easier than leaving herself vulnerable.
* ScarsAreForever: After being absorbed by the Scub Coral, she gets a couple of vein-like scars on the left side of her face and they stay for the rest of the series.
* SecondaryCharacterTitle: Her name is the series' title, but she's the deuteragonist.
* ShipperOnDeck: With Renton, Eureka helped Anemone understand her feelings for Dominic.
* ShyBlueHairedGirl: More reserved than socially anxious, though she's very wary of others and until meeting Renton generally refused to interact with anyone but her kids and Holland.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Renton is the only person that Eureka has ever fallen in love with.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She falls for Renton because of his good-nature and sensitive personality.
* TheSpock: Between her attempts to understand the humans around her and logical, inquisitive personality, she fits this trope to a T.
* TheStoic: Her calm, level headed personality and approach to battle makes her an extremely talented pilot, though she's overly serious and boring in everyday conversation. She gradually learns how to show her emotions to others, though with a huge amount of difficulty.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: At first, she mostly comes off as reserved and emotionally distant due to her lack of understanding of human feelings, yet she's a kind and motherly girl. Eventually, her warmer personality takes over.
* TechnicolorEyes: A sign that she's not human.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Like Renton, she eventually decides to fight without killing anyone.
* TokenNonHuman: She's the only Coralian member of Gekkostate.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: She originally was an EmotionlessGirl before the beginning of the anime. She began to develop emotions after adopting her three children, but remained emotionally distant of others. Meeting and falling in love with Renton turns her into a much more cheerful and open girl.
* TraumaticHaircut: After being absorbed by scub, her hair is left in kind of a unkempt pixie cut style. When she emerges after talking with Sayaka in Episode 41, her hair grows back into a bob hairstyle.
* {{Tykebomb}}: She was used by the government and trained to kill almost remorselessly, until one day, when she was checking a pile of corpses looking for wounded people to finish off, she found three orphans, had a huge epiphany, and decided then and there to adopt them and defect from the military.
* UncertainDoom: In the manga, [[spoiler:Eureka DisappearsIntoLight and is presumed dead after the Scub Coral's demise. However, Renton refuses to believe Eureka is dead and the final page implies Eureka reunited with Renton eventually.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: [[spoiler:Had this towards Ardroc Thurston, Renton's father, during the time he was alive.]]
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Being an EmotionlessGirl representative of the Coralians, Eureka is extremely confused by the concept of romantic love until she begins to fall in love with Renton. However, she seems to have figured out familial love on her own thanks to her adopted children.
* WhenSheSmiles: Gets into the habit of smiling, though she prefers a more vacant expression.
* WingedHumanoid: After her "big change" in the last few episodes, Eureka grows wings in her back.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: She emerged from the Scub Coral looking roughly 14 years old and ages at a slowed rate. She is estimated to be biologically about 16 years old by the time Renton arrives aboard the Gekko, but is chronologically the same age as him, right down to the day.

The leader of Gekkostate. Holland was once a Captain of the SOF, but defected and formed an anti-government movement. To the public, he is known as the world's top amateur [[SkySurfing lifter]] and is Renton's longtime idol. He pilots the Terminus typeR909, and later the Terminus typeB303 Devilfish.

----
* AcePilot: One of the many things he's famous for.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: He is a ''lot'' less of a {{Jerkass}} and much more laid-back in the manga.
* AloofBigBrother: Holland's often dismissive of Renton to the point where he attacks whenever he's angry at himself. At first. By the time Renton decides to rescue Eureka in "Morning Glory", Holland lets go of his childish nature and starts being a stern, [[ParentalSubstitute fatherly figure]] to Renton.
* AlwaysSecondBest: No matter how much effort he put into it, he would never become TheChosenOne.
* AnArmAndALeg: In the manga, [[spoiler:he loses his right arm during his final battle with Dewey]].
* TheAtoner: For his actions as an SOF member, his initial resentment towards Renton, and how he almost caused the Gekkostate to be dissolved, he does everything he can to set things right.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: He is the leader of Gekkostate and an extremely skilled pilot and fighter.
* BabiesEverAfter: Towards the end of the series, [[spoiler:Talho becomes pregnant with his child.]]
* BigBrotherWorship: [[spoiler:He was said to have idolized Dewey and never realized the deep hatred his older brother harbored towards him. His affection for Dewey was such that Holland even joined the military with him, and was made a unit leader.]]
* BigGood: The leader of the main heroes.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Talho, particularly how they both act like bratty teenagers with self-control issues and insecurities, which they both take out on Renton during the first half of the series. When he finally stands up to them for himself and Eureka, they both realize the error of their ways and decide to grow up.
* BoyfriendBlockingDad: He's a father figure to Eureka to the point that he resorts to beating up Renton, Moondoggie and Matthieu in "Date of Birth" over a poorly-worded statement made by her.
-->'''Holland:''' ''[lifts Renton up by the collar]'' Damn you! ''What the hell did you do to Eureka''?! ''[cue him giving Renton, Moondoggie and Matthieu AmusingInjuries]''
* BreakTheHaughty: He undergoes a big one during the end of "Morning Glory". He's initially a jerk who refuses to accept that he isn't TheChosenOne for Eureka, attempts to deny her relationship with Renton and also to run away his past and responsibility as the leader of Gekkostate. In "Morning Glory", Eureka is able to call him out on his abuse with Renton just before the latter returns to tell Holland that he only came for Eureka's sake. When Renton rescues Eureka at the end of the episode, Holland finally realizes that Renton is TheChosenOne and becomes a more responsible leader.
* BrokenAce: Previously the ace of the SOF, and ''definitely'' broken, after everything he went through and did.
* BrokenPedestal: Mild case of this for Renton, who found Holland's image was somewhat more inflated than justified, even admitted by the man himself. [[RebuiltPedestal Eventually he becomes worthy of that hype]].
* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler:The Abel to Dewey's Cain.]]
* TheCameo: He makes a brief appearance in ''Gravity Boys & Lifting Girl'' to compliment Sumner on his lifting.
* CharacterDevelopment: Holland is introduced as a jealous {{jerkass}} who tries to get Renton out of the picture in the first half of the series so he can be partners with Eureka. After "Morning Glory," he becomes a more mature and caring individual, due to him learning that he needs to face his problems rather than run away from them if he wants to help save the world and gain the trust and respect of others. He becomes very protective of the crew, particularly Renton and Eureka, to the point where he seems to favor them for important activities. When Talho tells him that she is pregnant with his child, he starts to take on a surrogate father role to the crew and he becomes more open and friendly with them.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: A soldier who was ordered to kill innocent people. [[spoiler:Before that, his parents were dead by the time he was a child. Afterwards, he had to find out that his older brother hated him.]]
* DeadlyUpgrade: Swaps to the 303 in the last act of the series, which requires extremely dangerous drugs just to pilot the thing.
* DeadpanSnarker: He has no shortage of barbs to trade.
* DeclarationOfProtection: After his CharacterDevelopment kicks in, he swears to do whatever it takes to protect Renton and Eureka.
* DefectorFromDecadence: In the past, when he betrayed the military.
* {{Determinator}}: In the manga, he ''will'' bring back the Amita Drive to Renton and Eureka, even if he has to crawl his way back after being attacked by [=TheEnd=].
* DislikesTheNewGuy: More than anyone else, Holland is resentful of Renton joining the Gekko to the point that he beats the crap out of him whenever things go wrong. However, Holland eventually reconsiders his opinion after he realizes that Renton and Eureka are meant to be together.
* DrivenByEnvy: What drives him throughout the first half of the series is his jealousy of Renton for being TheChosenOne for Eureka.
* EasilyForgiven: Both Renton and Eureka have forgiven Holland for how hard he was on them by the time of the second half of the series.
* FamilialReveal: [[spoiler:His last name is Novak; he's the younger brother of [[BigBad Dewey Novak.]]]]
* FatalFlaw: Holland has two: his first flaw is his wrath, and his second flaw is his willingness to run away from his past and responsibility. His temper gets the best of him when he tries denying Renton's relationship with Eureka as TheChosenOne. By the time Eureka calls Holland out for what he's done, it's already too late and Renton joins with Ray and Charles. Meanwhile, Holland's actions leads Gekkostate straight into a state army trap that takes advantage of this tragic instinct of his until Renton and Eureka's actions and reunion rescue the team in the finale of "Morning Glory". CharacterDevelopment helps get rid of this trait.
* AFatherToHisMen: Takes a while, but he grows into this over the course of the series.
* FreudianExcuse: [[spoiler:It was Dewey's efforts to destroy the Scub Coral, and potentially the world, that caused Holland to personally set out to stop him by thinking he can partner with Eureka and unite the humans and Scub Coral to overthrow Dewey. Because of this, Dewey is indirectly responsible for Holland's initial indifference towards the crew, his obsession with Eureka, and bitter resentment towards Renton in the beginning]].
* GoodIsNotNice: Holland is on the side of good for sure. However, he spends the first two seasons being a jerk to his crew (save Eureka and Talho), even being physically and emotionally abusive to Renton. Luckily, [[CharacterDevelopment he gets over it]] during the finale of "Morning Glory".
* GracefulLoser: A heroic example. After listening in on Renton and Eureka's conversation in "Morning Glory", he calmly accepts defeat and realizes that Renton is TheChosenOne after all.
* GreenEyedMonster: When Renton is chosen over him to become TheChosenOne for Eureka, Holland does a bad job of hiding his jealousy of Renton.
* HairTriggerTemper: In the first half of the series, he can barely stand in the same room as Renton before lashing out. At least initially.
* HeartbrokenBadass: He had a messy first relationship with Diane Thurston, which is one of many issues that led to the mess he is today.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: While not seen, his defection from the military in the video games (taking place a few years before the anime) has a fair amount of background importance. That said, Holland's story is already shown in the anime, aka the original adaptation; that is, as a hero in the main storyline, Holland's the HeroOfAnotherStory in the spin-off.
* HisOwnWorstEnemy: Let's face it, things would have work out much better in the first half of the series, had he learn to accept that there are ways for him to help save the world and stop Dewey, besides being Eureka's chosen partner, instead of always running away and letting his bitter feelings build up.
* JerkassRealization: After Renton returns to rescue Eureka in "Morning Glory", he immediately regrets how he was a jerk to Renton and everyone else at the Gekkostate and decides to make up for his actions.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Even though he has a temper and may overreact, Holland's a good guy underneath it all and is not afraid to admit when he's wrong.
* KickTheDog: [[SarcasmMode Slap the ignorant hero around, Holland! Such a great way to win his loyalty and impress your crew!]]
* LargeHam: He tends to be bombastic with his speeches, especially during battles.
* LaserGuidedKarma: As sad as it is, when you remember how much damage he's done to the crew, especially to Eureka and Renton, over the past two seasons, it is possible that his leg being wounded to the point where he may never be able to truly lift ride again, may be his comeuppance for the actions that lead to said wound.
* TheLeader: He's the captain of Gekkostate.
* LivingLegend: By far and away one of the most famous people in the entire world.
* ManChild: {{Deconstructed}}. Holland's immature nature has him poorly handling his anger (i.e., emotionally and physically abusing Renton) and straining his relationships with Renton, Talho, and the rest of Gekkostate. Fortunately, he grows out of this after "Morning Glory".
* TheMasochismTango: With Talho. They're dating, but their immature personalities and bad tempered natures cause lots of friction. They eventually work things out.
* MustMakeAmends: After "Morning Glory", he decides to reconcile with his fellow shipmates aboard the Gekko, as well as Renton and Eureka.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Holland's reaction after Eureka and Renton see through his bull makes him realize that he's throwing the crew's lives away, given how he acted.
* PapaWolf: In the second half of the series, Holland does everything in his power to protect Eureka and Renton from Dewey and his enemies. In "Date of Birth", he beats the crap out of Renton, Moondoggie and Matthieu due to a misunderstanding caused by Eureka.
* ParentalSubstitute: His interactions with Eureka and eventually, Renton, are reminiscent of a father and his children.
* PastExperienceNightmare: In one episode, he has a nightmare of the atrocities he committed while part of the SOF.
* PetTheDog: After Renton rescues Eureka in "Morning Glory", Holland apologizes to them and makes up for the damage his actions have caused.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He has a very reasonable judgment and is always willing to listen to Renton, even if he initially didn't trust him.
* TheResenter: He initially resents Renton for his relationship with Eureka. It gets thrown out the window when Renton rescues Eureka in "Morning Glory".
* ScreamingWarrior: Likes to scream while charging into the fray.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: He defects from the military along with Eureka in his backstory.
* SecondLove: To Talho, [[{{Implied}} possibly]]. [[spoiler:It's hinted near the end that she was in a previous relationship with Dewey, Holland's older brother, before becoming a couple with the latter.]]
* SelfFulfillingProphecy: Holland, attempting to deny Eureka's relationship with Renton, only ends up causing Renton to become TheChosenOne for Eureka regardless of his actions.
* SergeantRock: Holland might be a ''major'' jerk at times, but he's respected and liked by the Gekkostate crew because he's competent, wouldn't have them do something he wouldn't do himself, and despite his outward {{jerkass}}ery (especially in the first half of the series), is rather concerned for their welfare.
* ShamelessFanserviceGuy: While inside the Gekko, he wears nothing but his underwear. Since the ship is his home, he doesn't see anything wrong with it.
* SmokingIsCool: In the manga and novels, he is a smoker, unlike his anime counterpart.
* SupportingLeader: Renton is the protagonist, but Holland is the official leader of Gekkostate.
* TeamDad: He's stern, determined, and calls the shots.
* TookALevelInKindness: After the events of "Morning Glory", he chooses to prioritize facing his problems head-on and become a more responsible leader, starting with him reconciling with Renton and Eureka.
* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: Holland's running away from his past and responsibility only draws the Gekkostate to their near-doom in "Morning Glory". Fortunately, Renton and Eureka's reunion help snap him out of it.
* {{Tritagonist}}: He's the third focal character in the series, after Renton and Eureka.
* TheUnchosenOne: Part of his character arc is Holland realizing that it's not his destiny to become Eureka's chosen partner, but his role as the Gekkostate's captain still has value in his efforts to save the world.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Attempting to deny Renton's relationship with Eureka and running away from his responsibilities all but leads to Renton leaving Gekkostate for Ray and Charles.
* WasTooHardOnHim: Towards the end of "Pacific State", Holland blames himself for hurting everyone at Gekkostate because he ran away from his problems. And he's not exactly wrong...
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He wanted to be TheChosenOne for Eureka... by harming Renton in several different ways. [[RageAgainstTheMentor This ends up being a bad idea]].
* WhatTheHellHero: After everyone else fails to get through to Holland about his treatment of Renton, it's a combination of Eureka's crushed and soft-spoken [[DisappointedInYou disappointment in him for what he's done]] and Renton's BadassBoast to rescue Eureka to [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone realize the error of his ways]] in "Morning Glory."
* WouldHurtAChild: He often beats the crap out of Renton, who is a young teenager.
* YouCantFightFate: Holland learns from Norb that Eureka will find a partner that will make her smile and tries to find ways to become her partner. Not only does he fail to become Eureka's partner, but [[SelfFulfillingProphecy he ends up being the direct cause of it]].

The pilot of Gekkostate's ship, the ''Gekko'', and cover-girl for their magazine ''Ray=out''. She's in a relationship with Holland.

----
* AdaptationalNiceGirl: Much like Holland, Talho is much nicer and more mature in the manga. It helps all her jealousy issues and insecurities regarding Holland are gone in that adaptation.
* TheAlcoholic: She was a heavy drinker in the first half of the series.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Talho is in a relationship with Holland, who acts like a {{Jerkass}} most of the time. It's still downplayed because of her insistence that he act more maturely.
* BabiesEverAfter: Towards the end of the series, [[spoiler:Talho becomes pregnant with Holland's child.]]
* BabiesMakeEverythingBetter: [[spoiler:She and Holland vow to make a better world for their kid.]]
* BeAWhoreToGetYourMan: She reveals in episode 30 that her personality and revealing dress style was to capture and maintain Holland's attention and love. Once she gets over her insecurities, she starts dressing up more modestly.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Holland, particularly how they both act like bratty teenagers with self-control issues and insecurities, which they both take out on Renton during the first half of the series. When he finally stands up to them for himself and Eureka, they both realize the error of their ways and decide to grow up.
* ClingyJealousGirl: The root of her issues is that she can't stand the mere thought of Holland paying more attention to Eureka than her and the fact that she's afraid that he hasn't gotten over his feelings for Diane yet.
* ColorMotifs: Talho's two main outfits consisted of purple and white.
* CoolBigSis: She teases and advises the younger members of Gekkostate. Moreso after her CharacterDevelopment, after which she grows into more of a TeamMom.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: As a result of realizing her own immaturity and displeasure with the kind of person she has been recently, she undergoes a physical and emotional change. She ditches her {{Stripperiffic}} look for a more conservative one, including cutting her hair.
* FacialMarkings: The flower tattoo on her left cheek.
* GreenEyedMonster: Due to Holland's dedication to protect Eureka and put her safety above everything in hope of becoming her partner, Talho exhibited great jealousy and resentment towards Eureka, and lashed out in anger towards Holland for not only not taking her own feelings for him into consideration but using Eureka as an excuse to run away from his problems. She also tended to get angry at him when he showed his obsession and affection for his first love, Diane.
* HandOnWomb: [[spoiler: Does this very frequently after she discovers she's pregnant.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: She's best friends with Hilda.
* ImportantHaircut: Talho trims her normally unkempt hair as part of her complete outer (and inner) makeover in episode 30.
* InsecureLoveInterest: One of the reason her relationship with Holland was initially rocky was because of Holland's dedication to protect Eureka and his past relationship with Diane made her feel very insecure.
* LethalChef: She tried to cook in the manga and ruined the kitchen so badly that she made cup ramen instead.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The dark to Eureka's light. She's the sexy and enticing MsFanservice, contrasting the demure and socially awkward Eureka.
* MamaBear: Though she teases Renton in the beginning, she is willing to protect him along with Eureka, Maurice, Maeter, and Linck as if they are her own children.
* TheMasochismTango: With Holland. They're constantly at each other's throats even though they're dating. They eventually work things out.
* MoralityPet: Besides [[MysticalWaif Eureka]], Talho is the only one that [[GoodIsNotNice Holland]] doesn't take his anger out on.
* MsFanservice: She's an attractive woman with a curvy body and wearing skimpy clothing. Even after she starts dressing more modestly, her form-fitting clothes accentuate her figure.
* NumberTwo: Talho is the second-in-command of Gekkostate.
* ParentingTheHusband: Discussed. She tells Eureka that she'll have to deal with both [[spoiler:her baby]] and Holland's childish antics.
* SciFiBobHaircut: She eventually cuts her hair into a bob. This along with her costume change gives her a strong sci-fi look.
* SecondLove: {{Deconstructed}}. She is this to Holland, which she [[GreenEyedMonster has difficulty getting over]] and being the central reason for [[WomanChild immatuirty]] and [[{{Stripperiffic}} choice of style]] -- to keep Holand's attention.
* SettleForSibling: [[spoiler:It's implied she was in a relationship with Dewey before Holland.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: After going through CharacterDevelopment, Talho begins to give Renton good advice on how to strengthen his relationship with Eureka.
* SignificantWardrobeShift: When decides to set her immaturity aside, she abandons her skimpy clothes in favor of a bodysuit.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her initial outfit in the Gekkostate consists of a revealing crop top and a micro skirt. Midway through the series, she ditches the look for a very covering bodysuit.
* TaremeEyes: Her droopy eyes represent her motherly personality.
* TeamMom: She softens Holland's harsher tendencies and keeps everyone in line. [[spoiler: Bonus points for being pregnant with the TeamDad's child.]]
* TookALevelInKindness: As of episode 30, she loses her immature, temperamental nature, deciding to become the person she used to be before the Gekkostate. From then on, she becomes more mature, kind, and caring towards the crew.
* {{Tsundere}}: Towards Holland. Due to his anger and immaturity, she tended to lash out in anger towards him and questioned the length of his true feelings towards her.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: An older example. Prior to joining the Gekkostate, she was well-liked for her maturity and kindness towards others. However, upon joining the Gekkostate, she made major changes in her personality and appearance: Dressing in a {{Stripperiffic}} fashion and having a WomanChild attitude.
* WomanChild: She acts and dresses like a bratty teenage girl, but in truth she's pushing 30. Part of her CharacterDevelopment arc is coming to terms with this, culminating her into her "growing up" into the responsible adult of the Gekkostate because at the time Holland was too busy [[FatalFlaw running away from it all.]]

Eureka's adopted children, who she took care of after she killed their parents during a military raid. They are fiercely protective of their "Mama" and like to play pranks on Renton, but warm up to him over time.
----
* AttentionWhore: All of them compete with ''everyone else'' for Eureka's attention and affection.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: Linck is the youngest of them, and also the youngest member of Gekkostate.
* BrattyHalfPint: Maurice is the most sensible (probably due to being oldest) while Linck is the most immature. That said, they're all equally annoying a lot of the time, especially early in the series.
* CheerfulChild: All of them, but Maeter and Linck moreso -- when they're not being mean to Renton or crying, that is.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Their biological families were killed in front of them by Eureka, when then became their adoptive mother in atonement.
* FreudianExcuse: Their initial dislike of Renton was because they feared he would take away Eureka. The "excuse" comes in the fact that their original families died when they were very young.
* HappilyAdopted: By Eureka, and later by Renton as well.
* HarmfulToMinors: Maurice remembers being orphaned at a young age ''by his adoptive mother''.
* HiddenDepths: Maurice has an interest in books and photography, which Stoner introduced him to.
* InterspeciesAdoption: They're human children adopted by Eureka, a humanoid Coralian.
* TheLoad: [[JustifiedTrope Justified]]. None of them do anything remotely important for Gekkostate because they are ''children''. They only serve to be the reason behind Eureka's HeelFaceTurn.
* MoralityPet: To [[EmotionlessGirl Eureka.]] Finding them triggered her HeelFaceTurn.
* MyNewGiftIsLame: Eureka tends to get them textbooks as presents (usually ones that are too advanced for them). She does put thought into it, she just has no idea what they might like. And they need an education, after all.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: The kids are named after Nobel Prize-winning Belgian writer [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurice_Maeterlinck Maurice Maeterlinck]].
* ParentWithNewParamour: They don't approve of their adoptive mother Eureka's relationship with Renton, usually getting in the way of Renton's romantic advances towards Eureka. After some CharacterDevelopment, they eventually accept Renton as their adoptive dad.
* PrefersGoingBarefoot: Linck is the only one of his siblings (and perhaps the only one of Gekkostate) to not wear shoes. It demonstrates his babyishness. He outgrows it in the epilogue stills of the show, where he is finally shown wearing a pair of sneakers matching his shirt color scheme at Axel's junkyard because it's unsafe to walk around without any. Maeter also used to be shoeless, as seen when Eureka first met her, but she outgrew this long ago.
* ScarsAreForever: Linck has a massive gash on his head from being grazed by automatic gunfire, which bled quite a lot and knocked him out cold when it was inflected. It serves as a constant harrowing reminder of what Eureka did when she was [[{{Tykebomb}} little more than a mindless puppet of Dewey Novak]] and what she must strive to never do again.
* SpoiledBrat: Being inexperienced as a mother, Eureka has a tendency to spoil them.
* {{Tagalong Kid}}s: Especially egregious in the finale.
* TookALevelInKindness: All three of them learn to respect and trust Renton over time. They all go from disrespecting and harassing Renton to calling him "papa" and believing that he will save Eureka.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: In episode 45, Maurice pulls a gun on Renton, being jealous of Eureka's love for Renton. Eureka talks him out of it though and he accepts Renton as his father. Subverted when Eureka and Renton respond with only love and kindness, and Maurice drops the gun while he cries in Eureka's arms like the child he is.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Maurice knows Eureka is the one who [[spoiler:killed his real mother]], but he doesn't hold any grudge against her and loves her as his adoptive mother.
* YouthfulFreckles: Maeter is the only one to have them and, like her siblings, she's energetic.

----
* BigBrotherMentor: A lesser example to Renton.
* BlackAndNerdy: Often regarded as a genius by the others.
* ChekhovsSkill: His career as a DJ and interest in music comes up a few times to help on missions: he's able to isolate parts of a song that seem off which is crucial in locating Ray Beams when she [[spoiler:attacks the Gekko]]; his DJ connections helped the others locate Renton after he ran away; and he was the one playing the loud music when Gekkostate storms the planet's capitol.
* DemotedToExtra: Hardly appears in the last few episodes.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Once, he asked Renton if his mother ever taught him any manners. Too bad Renton never knew his mother... ouch. Even though Matthieu couldn't have known that, it still comes off as ''really'' damn cold.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Matthieu is insensitive (playing jokes on Renton), but he does show sympathy towards the young man in regards to Holland mistreating him.
* OfficialCouple: Matthieu and Hilda often act like husband and wife, although they are clearly in a romantic relationship.

* HappilyMarried: One of the post-series promotional stills shows Greg eventually won her back, as the two have wedding rings on... although he's still getting on her nerves.
* TheMedic: The doctor of Gekkostate.
* NiceGirl: Mischa is one of the nicest members of Gekkostate.
* ShipperOnDeck: Mischa was ecstatic when Holland bought the ring that Talho wanted.

* HumanAlien: [[spoiler:The ending reveals Gonzy is a Coralian.]]

* BewareTheNiceOnes: In the manga, at least, when the [[spoiler: ''Gekko'' is invaded by assassins after Eureka]], he very calmly shoots one in the head, making him one of the only characters with an onscreen kill.
* ChildhoodFriends: He and Holland have been buds since they were three.
* EyesAlwaysShut: He's never seen with his eyes open except for some very rare occurrences, revealing a pair of green eyes.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a barely noticeable scar that divides his left eyebrow.

* BetaCouple: With Moondoggie. They have the least amount of drama as a couple.
* CoolBigSister: Though even less so than Hilda, due to being much younger.
* TheDitz: She's not very bright.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Jealous of Talho and Hilda being this, she ''wants'' this kind of relationship with Eureka as the only other teenage girl in Gekkostate.

The newest member of Gekkostate before Renton. Jealous of Renton, despite being viewed as a big brother figure by him.

----
* AffectionateNickname: Dubbed "Brother Doggie" by Renton, much to Moondoggie's annoyance.
* AscendedExtra: He gets to be a tritagonist in the video games.
* BetaCouple: With Gidget. They have the least amount of drama as a couple.
* BromanticFoil: To Sumner in ''New Vision'', being loud and childish next to Sumner's OnlySaneMan status.
* ButtMonkey: In an unusual take on the trope, he was the ship's official ButtMonkey before Renton arrived, and actually resents Renton from taking the position from him. Of course, as Renton [[CharacterDevelopment grows as a character]] and becomes less of a push-around sort and starts dishing it out himself, Moondoogie reclaims his role as the Butt Monkey.
* CoolBigBro: To Renton, who sees him as a surrogate big brother.
* AFriendInNeed: In ''New Vision'', where he sticks by Sumner, in spite of all their bickering and not necessarily knowing what's going on or agreeing with what they're doing.
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler:He turns out to be a pretty good ship pilot.]]
* IJustWantToBeBadass: As the series goes on, his usefulness declines, which he's painfully aware of. [[spoiler:Luckily for him, he gets promoted to the Gekko's pilot.]]
* InstantExpert: ''New Vision'' suggests that he's [[spoiler:a (ship) piloting prodigy]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Not as bad as Holland, but unsurprising for a teenage male, he's prone to grumpiness and being egocentric. At the end of the day, though, he's still a good guy.
* MeaningfulName:
** According to one of the definitions given by Urban Dictionary, a moondoggie is 1960s slang for a habitual marijuana user. Almost certainly deliberate given the series' large amounts of references to 60s counterculture (and the presence of a character named ''Stoner'').
** It's also a reference to the character in the ''Film/{{Gidget}}'' franchise, just as the character's real name (see OnlyKnownByTheirNickname below) is a reference to James Darren, the actor who played Moondoggie in the three original films.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: According to his license, his name is actually James Darren Emerson. Nobody ever calls him this. In the timeline of ''Hi-Evolution 3'', having reached adulthood, he now goes by his given name instead.
* PrettyBoy: He's drawn prettier than the other men of Gekkostate, and Gidget mentions his pretty face at one point.
* TheResenter: He's initially not very fond of Renton due to his jealousy over him.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: At some point pre-series, as seen in the video games, he temporarily left the Gekkostate (implied to be because of being treated like the ButtMonkey, if you assume the "friends" he was complaining about to Ruri were the Gekkostate). At the end of ''New Vision'', he returns and is welcomed back.
* TookALevelInBadass: Eventually [[spoiler:becomes the pilot of the Gekko.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Sumner in the video games. Them constantly bickering didn't stop Moondoggie from giving Sumner his truck or from remaining in the conflict largely to stand by Sumner.
