->''"I regret it all too. Still... this is no time to let our emotions get the better of us."''

A tall, intimidating, yet friendly young man whose Quirk, "Dupli-Arms", takes the form of multiple arm-shaped tentacles that can replicate any part of his body at their tips; he is often compared to an [[AnimalMotifs octopus]]. For personal reasons, he chooses to always keep his face concealed under a mask.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: The sketches of his original design reveal [[ScaryTeeth how]] his face looks unmasked. Otherwise, it can't be seen in the manga until Chapter 370.
* AnatomyAnomaly: He doesn't have any visible ears.
* AnimalThemedSuperbeing: An octopus. This one is a bit subtle.
* AnArmAndALeg: A villain severs one of his arms during the attack on the training camp. It leaves a nasty gash, but he comes out fine otherwise due to his Quirk. [[GoodThingYouCanHeal Good thing he can heal]].
* TheBigGuy: Subverted; though he is physically the largest student in class 1-A, and he can use his quirk to generate numerous fists for punching, he rarely gets to actually play this role. More often, he plays a reconnaissance role by generating extra eyes and ears and using the flaps of skin between his arms as giant eardrums. [[spoiler:This gets played straight by the FinalBattle, where he takes on Spinner Mano-a-Mano after the latter had accepted multiple Quirks from All For One to transform into a hulking musclebound giant, with Shoji's strength allowing him to seriously hurt him even with his increased power]].
* CombatTentacles: Uses them to replicate parts of his body.
* CoolMask: The lower half of his face is always covered by a sort of ninja mask.
* CreepyGood: He is far from heroic-looking, and according to extra material, his mask is used to hide a villainous-looking face, yet he's one of the gentlest kids in Class 1-A.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: Shoji lived in a small rural town where he was actively harassed for his mutated appearance. After saving a young girl from a flash-flood, he was further accosted and recieved scars across his face from someone striking him with a rake. Despite receiving scars on his face from the people in his hometown who [[FantasticRacism hated and feared him for his Heteromorph quirk]], Shoji holds little to no malice within him; simply choosing to focus on the fact that he was able to save someone with his Quirk and hides his old scars behind a mask precisely so that he may one day be recognised as a cool mutant hero by the masses and inspire more children to move past their prejudice of mutant-type Quirks]], and to remove any inkling that he took up being a hero with a vindictive heart guiding his actions.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Gets some focus on his backstory with Koda during Final War.
* {{Determinator}}: In Heroes:Rising, he puts his all into protecting Katsuma and Mahora. Even taking several attacks from Nine's fingerbeams that were even able to seriously hurt Deku and still kept on trucking to protect them!
* EarlyBirdCameo: He appeared during the entrance exam, albeit he could only be seen from a back view.
* ExtraEyes: He can put extra eyes [[EyesDoNotBelongThere at the ends of his tentacles]].
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: And also mouths, ears, etc. He can replicate any body parts on his tentacles.
* FaceOfAThug: According to his character description and some concept art, his face is scary-looking, but he's a NiceGuy who is training to be a Pro Hero. He constantly wears a face mask to deliberately defy this trope. [[spoiler:His face reveal in chapter 370 shows he actually has a deeper reason to cover up how he looks since his jaw and neck are CoveredInScars from taking a pitchfork slash to the face when he was younger, which, along with his Quirk, make it clear to an outside observer that he's suffered from FantasticRacism in the past, and he hides them to avoid people assuming he became a hero out of a desire for {{Revenge}}]].
* FriendToAllChildren: Exemplified best in the second movie, where he protected Mahoro and Katsuma to the best of his ability, even [[spoiler:using his own body to shield them from Nine’s attacks and falling debris]]. He’s also shown to be really kind and gentle when talking with both of them. This pays him back well when Katsuma uses his Quirk to heal him while the two are trying to encourage Bakugo and Deku.
** As he elaborates to the rest of 1-A in a flashback, this was ultimately the reason he became a hero. [[spoiler:Despite receiving scars on his face from the people in his hometown who [[FantasticRacism hated and feared him for his Heteromorph quirk]], Shoji instead chose to focus on the one good memory he had about his powers, using them to rescue a young child who was nearly drowned in a flash-flood, and hides his old scars behind a mask precisely so that one day he'll be recognised as a cool mutant hero by the masses and inspire more children to move past their prejudice of mutant-type Quirks. His BreakingSpeech to the followers assaulting the hospital is capped off by him screaming at them that their actions will only cause the same animosity and hatred they endured to be targeted at their own children in the future, begging them to be better than their rage for their sake]].
* GentleGiant: He is noticeably taller than most of his classmates, enough to carry two of them on his back, but he's one of the kinder members of Class 1-A. [[spoiler:This makes his RageBreakingPoint by the various heteromorph civilians supporting the villains out of their anger against the FantasticRacism they experienced more pronounced, as he points out how [[ShutUpHannibal they're endangering innocent civilians]] contained within the hospital out of their [[FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse blind anger towards society]], whereas the heroes have made every effort to protect those same people]].
* GlasgowGrin: [[spoiler:A heroic example, as the people from his countryside hometown attacked him when he was younger and gave him one of these with a pitchfork to the face because they discriminated against him for being a heteromorph.]]
* GoodScarsEvilScars: [[spoiler:Bears a GlasgowGrin beneath his mask after somebody attacked him prior to coming to U.A., but it doesn't do too much to detract from his overall appearance. He ultimately doesn't look that bad even without it either, and you'd be hard pressed to find a sweeter boy anywhere. As he elaborates, he covers the scars up with his mask not because he's ashamed of them, or afraid to show them to others, but combined with his heteromorph quirk they make it clear to an outside observer that he's suffered from FantasticRacism in the past, and since Shoji aims to become the kind of hero who passes down 'good memories' to future generations in hopes of eventually removing this discrimination and prejudice, he hides them so others won't assume he's out for revenge for his prior mistreatment]].
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: In the Forest Training Camp Arc, he gets a hand chopped off by an attacking villain. Fortuitous, as he's the only member of the class who can easily recover from such an injury.
* HealingFactor: Shoji is capable of regrowing lost duplicate limbs, such as a ''double'' duplicate that was cut off from one of his limb branches during the forest trip.
* HiddenDepths: Apart from a desk and a futon, Shoji's room is completely empty. He explains that it's because he hasn't had any "worldly desires" ever since he was young, complete with Todoroki identifying him as a minimalist. His flashback in Chapter 371 puts a [[DarkAndTroubledPast darker spin]] on this [[spoiler:by implying that he was never afforded any luxuries beyond the barest necessities because of his appearance]].
* HorrifyingHero: According to the initial sketches of his character, he took steps to avoid this. He was told his face was terrifying, so he always wears a mask to cover his mouth to avoid scaring people:
-->"I'm used to being feared."
* HumbleHero: As he states, he has no "worldly desires" and seems to live a very simple lifestyle. The dub adds a bit of dry wit to this when he states that he's "never understood why people would want to fill their room with junk." [[spoiler:TheReveal about his past suffering and disfigurement due to FantasticRacism implies that his simplistic living style is born out of never having been granted basic comforts like other kids his age, and him having reconciled himself with that to eventually overcome said prejudice rather than allowing it to twist him]].
* HypocrisyNod: [[spoiler:He tells an apologetic Mineta that he thought nothing of him [[InnocentlyInsensitive calling him an octopus]], noting that aside from considering it a natural reaction, he himself likes to watch things like "Heroes that look like villains" Ranking despite his own experiences with FantastcRacism.]]
* IAmWhatIAm: [[spoiler:After years of hiding his face out of fear he'd be attacked again for his appearance simply for touching a non-heteromorph person, as is necessary in hero work, Shoji confidently declares that his "gross" octopus arms are part of who he is when trying to keep a beefed-up Spinner and his army from ransacking the central hospital.]]
--> '''Shoji:''' [[spoiler:Yeah. This is who I am.]]
* LonelyBachelorPad: Subverted. His own room is indeed minimalistic with no furniture at all except for the absolute basics and thus looks very much like this. However, Shoji is merely a teenager so this spartan get up is actually quite uncommon for young man his age. [[spoiler:It's an early hint that his childhood was not quite as pleasant as the rest of his classmates]].
* LostInTranslation: His hero name in Japanese is pronounced as "Tentakoru", which is close to the Japanese way to pronounce "Tentacle" (Tentakuru), except with "tako" (Japanese for "octopus") inserted in place of "taku", turning his hero name into a PunnyName. This wasn't localized, which means that Shoji's hero name ends up sounding just like a weird corruption of the word "Tentacle", though he points out the specific inclusion himself in chapter 371 when explaining [[spoiler:his DarkAndTroubledPast and desire to embrace his mutant powers to eventually overcome the FantasticRacism still present in society]].
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: He can grow multiple arms if he wanted as part of his Quirk.
* NiceGuy: He's very kind-hearted and calm most of the time, reassuring Tokoyami he holds no grudge against him after Dark Shadow goes on a rampage, and even rescuing him. He's also one of the few students that seems to tolerate Mineta.
* NonUniformUniform: The only student to wear a sleeveless uniform, in order to accommodate his six arms. That's one of the differences about a post-Quirk world; outfits can be custom-tailored on demand to accommodate unusual needs.
* NotQuiteFlight: The membranes between his arms allow him to glide to a certain extent.
* NotSoStoic:
** When All Might shows up in the USJ Arc, he is seemingly fanboying over it for a second (with [[TooManyMouths at least two big smiles]]).
** During the battle with the League of Villains at the training camp, he visibly freaks out when Dark Shadow's full power is unleashed and it goes completely berserk, destroying everything in its path. Hearing the normally stoic Shoji shouting in a ''panicked voice'' is unnerving.
* PunnyName: His name references a proverb: "the walls have ears, the doors have eyes". In this case, it's a reference to the traditional Japanese sliding paper doors, which are called ''shoji''. Eavesdropping is the main strength of his Quirk. This is also the case with his hero name, as shown on the LostInTranslation entry.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: He can do this by duplicating more arms to punch with.
* ShutUpHannibal: [[spoiler:He gives an enraged one to the various heteromorph civilian supporters joining in on the fighting against the heroes out of the belief that the villainous Spinner is the only kind of hero they need, willing to fight against the society that so discriminates against Heteromorph-users in less urban areas. He points out that by supporting the villains in attacking the hospital to liberate Kurogiri, they're endangering innocent civilians within the building as well, whereas the heroes they so despise made every effort possible to evacuate the patients from Jaku hospital before the fighting started. Underlying this, his mask is torn off by the beating they're giving him, exposing his GlasgowGrin that demonstrates he clearly experienced the same discrimination as them as he calls them out for [[FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse how shortsighted they're being]]]].
* SleevesAreForWimps: Both his school uniform and his hero costume have no sleeves in order to accommodate for his Quirk.
* TheStoic: Mostly keeps level headed and calm, even in dangerous situations, this can be partly said to the fact that, since he has only half of his face showing, it would be harder to show expressions.
* SuperSenses: His hearing is noted to be especially good to the point he can discern if someone is ''barefoot'', and is useful for scoping out large areas.
* SuperStrength: Thanks to his large build and being able to have [[MultiArmedAndDangerous extra arms]], he is one of the class' physical powerhouses.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: [[spoiler:He tries his best to talk down Spinner's supporters, trying to convince them to stop what they're doing and listen to reason. While it takes seeing what Spinner has actually become to sink in, it ''does'' finally hit home and stop them.]]
* TeamDad: The way he looks out for the well-being of his classmates, such as carrying Midoriya on his back when he's injured or wrapping a freezing Tsuyu in all his arms to keep her warm, coupled with his NiceGuy personality makes him a good example.
* TooManyMouths: His Quirk allows him to replicate any body part onto his tentacles; he's occasionally used them for growing mouths.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Compared to his classmates, Shoji shows a great amount of discipline and maturity, never letting his emotions get the better of him and always calling to his friends to respond to reason when things are tense. [[spoiler:During the FinalBattle, its revealed this is an attitude he cultivated because of his disfigurement due to FantasticRacism, refusing to allow the unfair treatment he suffered to warp him into somebody out for {{Revenge}}, and instead aiming to move beyond that to become a cool mutant hero that will inspire more children to overcome prejudice]]. On hearing this, Tokoyami says that he's a truly strong person even without his quirk.
* WouldHitAGirl: When Toga pinned down an incapacitated Izuku during the kidnapping of Bakugo by the League of Villains, he didn't hesitate one-second in slapping her away. Justified because had he not intervened, Toga was fully intending to stab Izuku, potentially fatally.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Despite being the tallest kid in his class, enough to pass off as an adult, Shoji is actually the youngest student; he's almost a whole year younger than the oldest student, Bakugo, even.

->"''But there's no time to hesitate, so do it now! You wanna be a hero, don't you?! Then let's pass this test.''"

An aloof, sarcastic, tomboyish but unexpectedly prudish student whose Quirk, "Earphone Jack", takes the form of elongated earlobes ending in jack plugs, which she can extend and plug into objects to catch extremely faint sounds or channel the sound of her own heartbeat into them in the form of powerful vibrations. She is a talented musician and is especially fond of rock music.
----
* ActionGirl: She can unleash powerful sound waves by plugging her earphone jacks into the speakers built into her boots.
* ACupAngst: She appears to be sensitive about having the smallest cup size in class. [[ArentYouGoingToRavishMe She even got upset]] when [[DirtyKid Mineta]] went on a rant about the girls he wanted to peep on, and she was the only one who ''wasn't'' mentioned.
* AllWomenArePrudes:
** Jiro has little tolerance for nudity and gets immediately flustered when confronted with it. During the USJ Arc, when Yaoyorozu's costume gets torn up by her Creation Quirk, Jiro is [[NakedFreakOut more embarrassed by Yaoyorozu's skin exposure]] than the one actually exposed.
** After being tricked into wearing cheerleader uniforms, [[ReluctantFanserviceGirl Jiro's the only one pouting and sitting out]] whereas the other Class 1-A girls try to have fun in spite of it.
** Jiro is the only one of the girls to be [[PleasePutSomeClothesOn utterly terrified]] at the sight of a naked Mirio upon training with him, especially when he looms right behind her [[FullFrontalAssault completely naked]], implying that she's a total prude indeed or that Mirio is [[GagPenis unusually huge downstairs]].
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: Similar to Kaminari, she has highlights in her hair that resemble audio waveforms in her case, which perfectly fit her sound-themed Quirk.
* AudioErotica: According to her classmates, she has a very husky, sexy singing voice. We finally get to hear it in the anime, [[https://youtu.be/npBlTKcHRVk?t=57 and it's amazing]]!
* BeautifulSingingVoice: Class 1-A is assigned to put on a show for the school's culture festival. When deciding who would be singing, the class is immediately blown away by Jiro's husky and powerful voice, planting her in the role of lead singer while everyone else would be doing stunts, instrumentals, and backup.
* BerserkButton: Jiro is really embarrassed by her closet punk rocker hobby, and if somebody brings it up in conversation, she gets mad enough to raise her earphone jacks at the offending party. When Kaminari learned about it during the Room King contest, Jiro was blushing and very put out at having to show people her room, and even though he thought it was something she was comfortable sharing, she got so upset she ran off and sulked at her desk when it was brought up in class.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:She arrives just in time riding on a flying Tokoyami to save Hawks from getting blasted out of the air by [[BigBad All For One himself.]]]]
* BizarreHumanBiology: Similar to Ida and his leg mufflers, Jiro has actual earphone jacks as part of her body, which she inherited from her mother. She can even plug them into her cellphone and listen to music.
* BoyishShortHair: She is a [[DeadpanSnarker snarky]] rock musician with short hair down to her chin.
* CharacterTics: She tends to fiddle with her earlobes or twirl them around her fingers.
* CivvieSpandex: Keeping with her punk rock theme, her hero costume looks more like she's heading to a mosh pit rather than fighting crime. Her upgraded costume includes headphones.
* CombatPragmatist: She kicks Kaminari into the action despite his hesitance to fight because she realizes that he can function as a living taser before he does.
* CombinationAttack: [[spoiler:Her and Hawks combine her sonic attack with his feather sword to create a resonating slash that finally pierces All For One's helmet.]]
* CrazyPrepared: Like Midoriya, she compiles journals about her love of music. So when the time came for Class 1-A to put on a show and she needed to help prepare the others with their instruments, her journals came in handy.
* DavidVersusGoliath: [[spoiler:Of all the members of Class 1-A, she and Tokoyami are the ones who go up against All For One in his original body. She loses an ear for it, but her Heartbeat Surround Legato SuperMove ends up being what rouses the Quirk vestiges inside All For One's copied Quirk to action. This lets Endeavor burn All For One to a crisp and force the maniacal supervillain to employ a SuicideAttack by using Rewind on himself, ensuring his eventual death. However, this doesn't stop his contingency plan to [[SoulJar reside in Shigaraki's body full time.]]]]
* ADayInTheLimelight: Gets a big focus during the School Festival Arc.
* DishingOutDirt: Her new special move, "Heartbeat Fuzz", allows her to use her sound waves in such a high impact, it is able to shake and destroy the earth before her.
* DramaticIrony: When she and Koda face off against Present Mic, she is surprised by his efficiency in battle, having thought he had gotten by on flash and showmanship. While Mic does prove himself to be quite ruthless, he really was just screwing around with them.
* DubPersonalityChange: A minor case, but her reactions to Yaoyorozu scolding her for shoving Kaminari into the enemies during the USJ attack are quite different in the sub and English dub.
-->'''Sub:''' [[SincerityMode Sorry]], [[ItSeemedLikeAGoodIdeaAtTheTime thought it was a good idea at the time]].\
'''Dub:''' [[SarcasmMode I'm sorry]]. Next time I'll ''ask'' before saving our butts.
* DudeMagnet: Despite feeling insecure about her looks, CasanovaWannabe Kaminari ends up genuinely falling for her and even considers her first and foremost in his heart. [[TheQuietOne Koda]] is also implied to have a thing for her after she helped him conquer his fear of insects to pass the term exam.
* EarAche: [[spoiler:Gets one of her earphone jacks ''torn off'' courtesy of All For One during the final battle. It's unclear if she lost the entire ear due to her hair covering the side of her head where it would be.]]
* FacialMarkings: She has tear-shaped markings on her cheeks as part of her hero costume. It's unknown whether they serve any practical purpose or are just for aesthetics.
* FemaleRockersPlayBass: She's the most 'alternative' of the Class 1-A girls (she's a snarky and aloof rocker with short hair, in contrast to the other girls who are preppier or straightforwardly feminine) and is the class's most preeminent musician; during the School Festival she spearheads their school festival with her BeautifulSingingVoice and skill at the bass guitar.
* FireForgedFriends: Her friendship with Koda sets off from their teamwork against Present Mic during the Final Exams Arc.
* FlippingTheBird: One of her most potent insults. One time, Kaminari apparently said something insensitive to her without meaning to after the aforementioned peeping incident that rubbed her the wrong way. Cue her doing this to a stunned Kaminari.
* TheGadfly: She absolutely ''loves'' to screw with Kaminari. She has a fondness for him because he makes her laugh. This is especially the case when he's reduced to a gibbering, "wheeying" idiot. She also loves to give him a condescending remark.
* {{Goth}}: The rock fan variety. She wears a lot of black and has a dark aesthetic even in her hero outfit.
* GuiltyPleasures: Her interest in music. She's the only girl embarrassed about the others seeing her room during the dorm tour. Chapter 169 reveals that she doesn't think her musical interest is heroic, and that she isn't proud enough about it to perform live during the U.A. Cultural Festival. Even though Uraraka and Hagakure have watched her perform in her room on the guitar, her body language shows she is really shy in front of an audience: nervously blushing, hands tucked under her legs, and feet dangling above the floor with her toes pointed out and avoiding the ground. It turns out that this is largely due to the fact that in the past, she felt conflicted about her dream of becoming a pro hero since she thought her parents would want her to become a musician like them, even though they assured her they would support her no matter which path she took.
* HiddenDepths: She's a great bass player and vocalist, and leads the effort for 1-A's performance by creating the song and teaching the others how to play. This is due to both of her parents being musicians, and they fostered her love of music from an early age.
* InconsistentSpelling: Her first name can be spelled "Kyoka", "Kyouka", or "Kyōka", while her last name can be spelled "Jiro", "Jirou", or "Jirō".
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Downplayed. While she isn't exactly the nicest or outgoing person, and can be very snarky and rude, she's still a supportive, caring friend towards other classmates. Best shown when she tries to encourage Koda to do his best during their final exam.
* LikeParentLikeChild:
** She and her mother share the same Quirk and similar physical traits.
** Her love for rock music definitely comes from her father.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Due to injuries sustained during the Forest Training Camp Arc, she is one of only three students in Class 1-A who don't know about Kirishima's insane plan to rescue Bakugo, the others being Hagakure and Bakugo himself.
* LogicalWeakness: Having sensitive ears means if there is a sudden loud noise when she amplifies her sense of hearing, [[SensoryOverload Jiro will get shocked]]. This is how Bakugo knocks her out in the second OVA and how she is damaged in Episode 55. In addition, she has to have some kind of surface to transmit vibrations through or she cannot use her Quirk at all offensively. Normally her hero costume fixes this, but if she is unable to use it, she can only really use it for support roles.
* MakeSomeNoise: Her Quirk allows her to increase the sound of her heartbeat and, in combination with her hero costume, transfer the sound to her targets. While debilitating on its own, she later gets upgraded speakers that she can use to turn them into destructive shock waves that demolish the ground.
* MeaningfulName: "Jiro" contains the character for "ear". "Kyoka" contains the character for the verb "echo".
* MundaneUtility: Yes, her Quirk can function just like normal earplugs, as seen with Jiro plugging them into her phone.
* NomDeMom: She and her dad use her mom's surname, which is apparently relatively common in this universe.
* NotEvenBotheringWithTheAccent: In the Latin American Spanish dub of the TV series, she speaks with a very thick Cuban-American accent. Averted in the dubs of the films, since she was dubbed with a neutral accent.
* OddFriendship:
** She seems to have one with Yaoyorozu. Yaoyorozu's a sweet TeenGenius, while Jiro's a JerkWithAHeartOfGold who has a very unsophisticated Quirk and lifestyle.
** She has one with Koda. Koda is a very shy ShrinkingViolet, while Jiro is an outspoken DeadpanSnarker. Both of their Quirks work based on sound, but he talks with animals, while she attacks using sound.
* OrganicTechnology: Her earphone jacks are naturally part of her body and can be extended or retracted at will.
* PersonalityPowers: Yes, the rocker girl has sound-based earplug powers.
* PervertRevengeMode: When Mineta [[WithCatlikeTread loudly]] discovers a peephole to the girls' locker room, her response is to quickly stab him in the eye through it.
* RedOniBlueOni: In opposition to their color schemes, she's the Red Oni to Yaoyorozu's blue in both the USJ and the anime filler episode 55: Impulsive and fiery in comparison with the cautious Yaoyorozu.
* RunningGag: A minor one, but whenever one of the boys fantasizes about the girls, Jiro always seems to be left out of it. One of the first things she does when arriving at the party wearing a cute dress in ''Two Heroes'' is zapping Kaminari and Mineta when they start saying unflattering things about the way she looks.
* SensorCharacter: In team situations, she usually uses her Quirk to plug her jacks into walls or floors to listen for oncoming enemies.
* ShipTease: With Kaminari. Though they undoubtedly start out as VitriolicBestBuds, she becomes flustered around him after he praises her musical skills. Later, she is the first person he focuses on when Midnight tells him to think of the most important person to him during the Liberation War to gather courage, while the two are seen together in hospital during the arc's denouement.
* ShutUpHannibal: [[spoiler:She throws All For One's comments about her and Tokoyami being like the [[CListFodder jobber]] characters from the comics he read at him by saying that he should keep his speeches to himself until he has actually won.]] [[spoiler:This defiance from what All for One calls "an extra" ends up encouraging the vestiges of all the Quirks he has stolen to outright ''rebel'' against the BigBad, holding him down for a critical moment and allowing Hawks' and Kyoka's CombinationAttack to shatter All for One's mask.]]
* ShyFingerTwiddling: She does a variant of this with her earlobes when flustered or embarrassed, tapping the ends of her headphone jacks together meekly.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: [[spoiler: Kyoka, along with the rest of the heroes, were seen as nothing but "jobber characters" by [[BigBad All For One]]; saying that they aren't impressive and genuinely believing that they couldn't defeat him. Kyoka's response was to yell at All For One that she doesn't care what he thinks and launches a powerful soundblast that weakened All For One enough for Fumikage to destroy his mask. Her defiance against All For One also inspired the vestiges inside the villain to rebel against him, much to his [[ThisCannotBe disbelief]]. Due to the vestiges' rebellion, he was unable to properly use his Quirks, resulting in him getting brutally burned alive by a furious Endeavor.]]
* TheSnarkKnight: She's quite sharp-tongued, especially towards Kaminari in order to tease and make fun of him, but no one is safe from her cutting sarcasm.
* SquishyWizard:
** While her Quirk has immense offensive power when utilized properly, it leaves her with very few defensive options. This is shown aptly during Jiro's first big fight scene during the USJ Arc, where she manages to wipe out entire scores of villains singlehandedly, but would've been taken out by a single surprise attack had it not been for Yaoyorozu's intervention.
** Class 1-B prioritizes eliminating her first, since her search abilities and firepower are an asset to her team, while her lack of defensive abilities makes her an easy target. Luckily for her team, Bakugo, who's become willing to protect his teammates, comes to her aid.
** [[spoiler:Her battle alongside Hawks and Tokoyami against All For One has the supervillain prioritize attacking her. Not because he thinks she's a threat, but because he's such a cowardly bully he will ''always'' go for who he perceives to be the weakest target. Unfortunately for him, Kyoka ends up the exact person who can rouse the vestiges held hostage within the copied All For One Quirk to action, which starts a chain of events leading to his inevitable death.]]
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Jiro is the spitting image of her mother, down to having the same Quirk, except for the fact that her mother wears glasses. It's subtle but she inherited her father's eyes down to their shape.
* SugarAndIcePersonality:
** Besides being quite snarky all the time, she has a soft spot for Yaoyorozu and Koda.
** She also never misses the chance to taunt Kaminari and call him stupid, and even uses her Quirk one time on him and Aoyama for saying her room is not "girly". Regardless of this, she still cares for him and all of her friends.
* TokenWholesome: The only girl in Class 1-A who isn't outwardly sexualised in any way. She's one of the least sexualised female characters in general.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Kyoka Jiro is a [[DeadpanSnarker snarky]] rock musician with BoyishShortHair. Momo Yaoyorozu is a sweet YamatoNadeshiko with {{long hair|IsFeminine}}.
* TomboyishVoice: In theme with her style, she also has the gruffest voice of all the girls in 1-A.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Despite her interest in rock music, her fairly boyish fashion sense, and her sarcastic personality, her character file states that she has a girly side. In ''Two Heroes'', she wears a pink dress and a floral hair accessory to the party.
* TrickedOutShoes: Her hero costume's boots have speakers on them that she can plug her earlobes into. Later, she adds a set of headphones to her ensemble to make it easier and faster to execute her heartbeat assaults and prevent bad guys from recognizing and reacting to what she's about to do.
* UnusualEars: Her earlobes are long and look like audio connectors. She inherited them from her mother.
* VariableLengthChain: She can extend her earlobes and use them as weapons at will.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Her relationship with Kaminari is something akin to this. They hang out with each other frequently, but their interactions consist mostly of bickering.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: Seems to have this relationship with her father. When he tries to look like a serious stern father in front of Aizawa and All Might, she points out he was acting like a fanboy the day before.
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Jiro is the only student in her class that wears a waistcoat as part of her school uniform. Everyone else wears jackets.

!!!'''Quirk:''' [[DuctTapeForEverything Tape]]

->''"See, the simpler you are, the better!"''

A chipper, down-on-his-luck boy whose Quirk, "Tape", allows him to shoot an incredibly strong tape-like material out of his slot-like elbows, which he can use to restrain foes, hold objects together, or simply swing through the air with great agility. His plain face is often the butt of many jokes, as is his unfortunate tendency to be shown up by others.
----
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: His hair looks like the jagged edge of a torn piece of tape.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Invoked and exploited. Sero ''knows'' that he looks silly and not very threatening and he often uses this to his advantage because people often overlook him. Thus, no one ever sees him coming, which allows him to prove his resourcefulness to its fullest extent whenever he's given a chance and how versatile his Quirk can be.
* BizarreHumanBiology: The shape of his elbows implies that he has actual tape dispensers inside of him which he can control like an organ.
* BookDumb: He has an average intelligence stat of 3/5, but apparently he's not very good at tests. He had the 4th lowest score on Class 1-A's midterm.
* BoringButPractical: Much like Mineta, he specializes in traps more than direct combat. His Quirk is more versatile though, and can be used as a BuildingSwing.
* BrokenFaceplate: During the battle against Nine in Heroes:Rising, he gets half of the visor destroyed. It gets completely wrecked when Nine sends him flying into the ground.
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: His hero costume has a stylized white "H" on the front.
* BuildingSwing: A practical use of his Quirk, just like ComicBook/SpiderMan.
* ButtMonkey: Despite his upbeat disposition, he is probably the biggest one in the whole class next to Mineta. Every time he gets a chance to prove himself, someone either one-ups him or takes him down before he ever had a chance to really show his stuff.
* CovertPervert: During the Provisional Hero License Exam Arc in the anime, Sero is flustered when Midoriya tells him and Uraraka that Camie turned into the latter. He then asks whether or not Camie is naked in her Uraraka disguise. He then shares this information with the two-class perverts.
* CurbStompBattle: In matches against both Todoroki and Midnight, he gets wasted in seconds.
* DeadpanSnarker: Quite surprisingly so. Despite his cheerful disposition, he's also notable for having some of the snarkiest lines of the series.
-->'''Sero:''' (''To Bakugo about being class rep'') What? Did you honestly think anyone was gonna vote for you?
* DontYouDarePityMe: After Todoroki [[CurbStompBattle puts him in a deep freeze]] barely ''seconds'' into their match during the U.A. Sports Festival, the whole audience is roused into a pity party for poor Sero, chanting for him not to worry about it. To KickTheDog even more, little schoolkids randomly come up to him on his way to U.A. and tell him the exact same thing. Tsuyu tries to tell him not to worry about ''that'', but she only compounds his humiliation.
* DuctTapeForEverything: What his Quirk boils down to, even though it's not exactly duct tape. Sero uses his tape mostly as rope-like implements.
* GrapplingHookPistol: Sero's tape dispenser elbows can essentially work like this as the tape he shoots out from them can be rolled back in order to pull himself up (or pull other people towards him).
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: The power to create scotch tape has never been more useful.
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: Subverted. Whenever he is in a proper combat situation, he always wears his helmet, which covers his entire face. The visor becomes conveniently translucent whenever Horikoshi wants us to see his face if he doesn't open it.
* HeroicRROD: Ejecting too much tape causes him to suffer dry skin.
* HiddenDepths:
** Had one of the more exotic and tastefully decorated dorm rooms among the boys, belying his otherwise plain nature. Jiro even lampshades the unexpected nature.
--->'''Jiro:''' Sero, I didn't peg you for someone who'd like this stuff.\
'''Sero:''' Yup, that's me! Always the wild card.
** His favorite foods are oranges, soybeans, and other foods that look healthy, implying that he's somewhat health-conscious. He does have a HeroicBuild like all the other male Class 1-A students.
** He seems to know exactly how to press people's buttons when needed, which is exactly how he got Bakugo to showcase his drumming ability.
* InstantKnots: His tape can easily wrap around his intended target. His Quirk wouldn't be as useful otherwise.
* {{Keet}}: He's loud and show-offy and is quite easily one of the most energetic and fun-loving people in the class.
* LethalHarmlessPowers:
** It's implied that his tape could be used to suffocate someone. When Mineta used a piece of it as a makeshift gas mask to protect himself from Midnight's sleep-inducing mist, he could only wear it for about a minute before starting to lose oxygen.
** He can also use his tape as a sling by sticking one end of it to a large, heavy object, such as a rock or piece of debris, and [[EpicFlail swinging it directly at the intended target]]. He used this tactic to great effect in the provisional hero license exam. In the 2nd Movie he uses this extensively with Uraraka's help by having her float rocks, with him using his tape to send them flying at Nine.
* TheLoad: During the final exam, he gets wasted in three-seconds flat by Midnight, albeit after getting Mineta to safety, forcing Mineta to deal with her in one-on-one combat. As a result, he's the only member of a winning team to be assigned remedial training.
* NiceGuy: He's a friendly guy who gets along well with everyone. The Official Character Book gives him a 5/5 for cooperativeness.
* NoBadassToHisValet: A variation. Sero is not exactly the closest to Bakugo but he's indeed one of the few in Class 1-A that Bakugo can't seem to browbeat into submission, no matter how violent he gets or how much he threatens to kill him. In fact, [[TheGadfly Sero seems to really enjoy screwing with Bakugo's short fuse]], despite their huge power difference.
* TheNondescript: Lampshaded in the character descriptions, which straight-up call him a background character. His face also falls under this, being described by Bakugo as a "Soy Sauce Face", which is one of six stereotypical ways to draw an Asian - this one, to be specific, is flat-faced.
* OneWayVisor: Featured in his hero costume.
* OpenMouthInsertFoot: During the Forest Training Camp Arc, when Yaoyorozu says that her Quirk allows her to produce objects from the lipids in her body, Sero comments that it's like pooping. This causes her to go into a TroubledFetalPosition, which earns him a punch in the face from an angry Jiro.
* OutOfFocus: He's considered one of the background characters in Class 1-A, getting little focus or characterization.
* PerpetualSmiler: He's never not seen with an angular, toothy smile most of the time.
* PersonalityPowers: He is very social, friendly, and outgoing. In other words, he likes to "stick" to people.
* PervertRevengeMode: He does this on Toru's behalf when Mineta tries to use the room decoration contest to go through her underwear drawer. For the rest of the contest, Mineta's cocooned in tape and being dragged around like dead weight.
* PunnyName: "Serohantepu" is the Japanese way to pronounce "cellophane tape".
* StevenUlyssesPerhero: His chosen hero name doesn't stray too far from his real name. He himself [[LampshadeHanging lampshades this]], noting he really didn't have to think too hard on the name.
* TombstoneTeeth: His most distinctive feature is his wide, toothy smile, setting him apart from most of the other characters who instead have a ToothStrip.
* {{Troll}}: Tends to do be one to Bakugo, particularly in first few arcs.
* WeakButSkilled: Sero is not that great in direct combat and doesn't have much offensive potential, but he can make very good use of his Quirk by using it to capture a target, as a grappling hook to scale buildings, to move quickly through a large area using BuildingSwing-style maneuvers, or to pull someone out of the way in a dangerous situation. The Official Character Book gives him a 1/5 for power, but a 4/5 for speed and technique.

->''"With your positions revealed, you're in my crosshairs. And there's no hiding from the coming storm. As Hawks would say... speed beats power."''

A reserved, serious young man with a bird-like appearance. His Quirk, "Dark Shadow", manifests as a shadowy monster that inhabits his body which he can summon to fight on his behalf. Dark Shadow's power and personality change with the amount of light: strong light makes it weaker but easier to control, while darkness drastically increases its power but makes it much wilder and violent, which puts Tokoyami at risk of losing control over his Quirk.
----
* AllEncompassingMantle:
** His hero costume features one. This is justified, as Dark Shadow is WeakenedByTheLight, so the cape keeps it in shadow. He uses this to better effect when utilizing Black Fallen Angel. A technique he developed while training under Hawks that allows him to fly using Dark Shadow to carry him while also covering Dark Shadow in the cape to protect it from the sun.
** His newest technique, "Black Ankh", has him use Dark Shadow as a mantle, allowing him to overcome his weakness in close quarters combat by increasing his defensive and offensive capabilities.
* AnimalMotifs: Unsurprisingly, he's associated with birds.
* BadassArmFold: This is pretty much his default posture.
* BadassCape: Wears a billowing black one as part of his Hero attire.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: And thank goodness for that. Tokoyami would be a major villainous threat with his Quirk at night if he weren't aspiring to be a hero. The carnage that happens during the Training Camp arc spells out how dangerous Dark Shadow could be after it turns gigantic and Tokoyami struggles to keep him at bay. [[spoiler:The League of Villains even try to kidnap him for the same reason as Bakugo in an attempt to recruit him, and he turns Dark Shadow into a Gigantomachia-sized {{kaiju}} in the final battle to try and imprison All For One]].
* BigDamnHeroes:
** During the Paranormal War Arc, [[spoiler:he swoops in and saves Hawks from being burned to death by Dabi]].
** [[spoiler:Saves Hawks' ass again alongside Jiro during the FinalBattle, this time against [[BigBad All For One himself]]. He reassures his mentor that while he's not a suitable replacement for Endeavor, who had been injured by All For One just prior, he and Hawks are still a good team and he is willing to take a stand even with his life on the line.]]
** [[spoiler:All For One looks like he's going to start stealing Quirks and killing the heroes, with Tokoyami having been missing for some time. Turns out Tokoyami was busy immersing himself in darkness to power up and promptly blindsides All For One in his [[SuperMode Full Release]] form.]]
* BookDumb: Downplayed. Despite placing fifth on Aizawa's Quirk Test and third in the Sports Festival, Tokoyami has a rather subpar rank of 14th on the midterms.
* CastingAShadow: His Quirk is a LivingShadow that he can project from his body.
* {{Chuunibyou}}: He has a tendency to act like one through his gothic appearance and mystical flare. However, he subverts a lot of the negative behaviors and he is a legitimate good-hearted and talented hero. It's something of a parody, since unlike most Chuunibyou, he really ''does'' have powers and they really are dangerous and hard to control at times.
* TheComicallySerious: He has a tendency to say dramatic things about situations that don't quite deserve them, such as calling a recreational game on their school trip a "mad banquet of darkness." He even repeats it which Uraraka lampshades. His first name for his new super move is very dark and dramatic sounding, but Midnight tells him that it doesn't roll off the tongue well at all. Cementing this is how he gets angry when nobody takes his room's decor, which was very dark and spooky, seriously.
* ColdHam: He constantly tries to invoke this. When he speaks, expect Tokoyami to say something overly dramatic about the current situation:
-->'''Tokoyami:''' (''about the interclass fear challenge'') A mad banquet of darkness.\
'''Uraraka:''' He said it again.
* CovertPervert: He's usually one of the most serious and stoic members of the class, but he's also more than a bit perverted. For one he considers entering his female classmates bedrooms to be "the forbidden gardens." For another, [[spoiler:Tokoyami is so {{distracted|ByTheSexy}} by Jiro using him as a SapientSteed, that he asks her to "keep [her] rear end still", ''in the middle of the FinalBattle'']].
* CreepyGood: From the way he [[{{Goth}} behaves]] to his powers and his SuperPoweredEvilSide, it's easier for people to be scared of him, but he is nonetheless, a hero in training.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Darkness and shadows are traits normally associated with villains, but what we've seen of Tokoyami so far paints him as a rather valiant person. Lampshaded by Tokoyami himself when [[ShutUpHannibal he responds]] to [[spoiler:All For One]] giving a BadassBoast about [[ShadowDictator lurking in the darkness]] during his golden age.
--> '''Tokoyami''': Even darkness comes in a range of shades. So you don't get to speak of '''the dark'''.
* DarknessVonGothickname: He has a very evil-sounding, darkness-based name. "Tokoyami" literally means Eternal Darkness, and his first name contains the character for "shadow". This matches his powers and [[{{Goth}} personality]], though he's not evil.
* DeathGlare: [[spoiler:When he finally works his way around All For One to launch a surprise attack on him, he fixes him with the most scathing, hateful glare possible for all the harm and anguish he's caused... and for sullying [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking the very idea of]] [[{{Chuunibyou}} "darkness."]]]]
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:While Hawks and Jiro were the ones to break All For One's mask, Tokoyami is the one to ''shatter it to bits'' once it's damaged with a full power strike. This makes him the first person other than All Might to do serious damage to the original All For One. He also ends up overwhelming him with Abyssal Black Body: Light of Baldur later in the fight.]]
* TheDreaded: It's implied he became this to [[spoiler:''All For One'' after shattering his life support mask]], as when he senses the full powered Dark Shadow looming behind him [[spoiler:he instantly [[OhCrap panics]] while flashing back to Tokoyami doing it. After blasting Tokoyami off, he instantly tries to escape despite previously having been committed to wiping the heroes out.]] This is notable, as it makes him only one of three people to ever make [[spoiler:All For One]] show fear of any kind, the other two being [[spoiler:All Might and Endeavor]], and later on [[spoiler:when All For One is in a desperate fight against a recently revived Bakugo, All For One arrogantly assumes his Explosion Quirk is lesser to both Endeavor's Hell Flame and Tokoyami and Dark Shadow, showing just how much of a threat the Jet Black Hero duo were to him.]]
* EarlyBirdCameo: He first appears in the third chapter fighting a 2-point robot during the entrance exam, but it's easy to completely miss him. Bonus points for actually looking like a bird.
* ElementalRockPaperScissors: He is weak against Quirks able to generate light like those possessed by [[HavingABlast Bakugo]], [[ShockAndAwe Kaminari]], and [[PlayingWithFire Todoroki]]. On one hand, he's at a disadvantage should he face them in a direct combat situation, like in the U.A. Sports Festival, but on the other, they can weaken Dark Shadow should Tokoyami lose control of it.
* EquippableAlly: Tokoyami can wear Dark Shadow over his body as "Black Ankh", augmenting his close-range combat.
* EvilerThanThou: Or rather, Darker Than Thou. [[spoiler:As All for One gloats that everything is below him, the self-proclaimed King of Darkness, Tokoyami and Dark Shadow pop behind him and boast that their darkness is greater than him. It's not empty boasting either, as even All for One recognizes that he ''must'' dodge the incoming attack, done by Dark Shadow empowered to Kaiju-level.]]
* {{Goth}}: If his appearance didn't already make it clear, his dorm room takes this up a step further.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: He received an internship from Hawks offscreen while the story arc at the time focused on other Class 1-A students' internships. Later chapters do go into more details of Tokoyami's experience.
* HiddenDepths:
** He seems like a very dark and serious guy at first glance, but he actually has a rather strong sense of justice, is very respectful, and works well with others. He is also TheComicallySerious, as noted above. He's also not the best student, placing 14th out of the 20 students in Class 1-A grade-wise.
** He is actually a very good guitarist, and has experience with it.
--->'''Tokoyami:''' I put down the axe when I was bested by the F chord.
* HorrifyingHero: [[spoiler:His SuperMode, Abyssal Black Body: Full Release, sees him supercharging Dark Shadow until he becomes a {{Kaiju}} with Tokoyami piloting it. Despite looking like a terrifying monster made of darkness, Tokoyami is in complete control and as heroic as ever.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Not knowing about Todoroki's AbusiveParents, Tokoyami tries to encourage Todoroki by relating to his duty as the student of the #1 and #2 heroes. Todoroki ends up thinking about the horrible things Endeavor did to him. He pretends to appreciate the support, [[HeroicBSOD but basically goes into a trance until Ida's enthusiasm snaps him out of it]].
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Surrenders to Bakugo in their duel during the U.A. Sports Festival, after realizing how severely Dark Shadow is WeakenedByTheLight of Bakugo's explosions.
* LightningBruiser: After figuring out his Abyssal Black Body and Ragnarok techniques, he becomes both extremely fast and able to hit harder than many pro-heroes. [[spoiler:Abyssal Black Body: [[SuperMode Full Release]] make him strong enough to scare ''All For One'', fast enough All For One couldn't dodge his attacks, and durable enough to tank his attacks without much issue. Notably, it takes All For One overclocking a WaveMotionGun of pure light to the point he blows his own arm off to finally take him down.]]
* LionsAndTigersAndHumansOhMy: Justified. People born with mutation quirks that give them a non-human head or other non-human parts of their bodies are commonplace in TheVerse, so nobody ever remarks on his black bird head.
* LimitBreak: [[spoiler:[[SuperMode Dark Shadow: Total Release]] requires him to fully immerse himself in darkness from multiple sources to supercharge Dark Shadow. The end result? A ''{{Kaiju}}-sized'' version of his Abyssal Black Body technique so powerful it can give ''All For One'' trouble one on one.]]
* LongRangeFighter: He is great at keeping enemies away from him, but has trouble if the enemy manages to close in through dodging or numbers. He tries to avoid this later on by developing a new technique, Dark Ankh, where he covers himself in Dark Shadow-like armor to increase his defense and improve his capabilities in close-quarter combat.
* MeaningfulName: His first name roughly translates to "Unsavory Shadow" while his last name literally means "Eternal Darkness", both emphasizing the power and hard-to-control nature of his darkness-related Quirk.
* MultiformBalance: Depending of the surrounding light conditions, he has to sacrifice either the strength of his Quirk or his control over it. In bright light, his Dark Shadow is docile but also very weak and timid. In darkness, it's stronger but also harder to control as well. Later, he develops a technique of shrouding himself in Dark Shadow as a close-range option, trading range for improved defense. He gradually gets more control over Dark Shadow's full power.
* NiceGuy: Tokoyami may act reserved, but when he teams up with others, he becomes more sociable, helping his teammates out, reassuring his trust in them and thanking them for their effort.
* NonHumanHead: His head is bird-like in appearance, but everything else from the neck down is human. He also wears a red choker at all times, which hides his human neck to emphasize his bird head.
* NoSell:
** [[spoiler:Tokoyami ends up the perfect counter to All For One and [[PowerParasite his Quirk]] since Dark Shadow only being an extension of Tokoyami means [[LogicalWeakness there's no Quirk factor to steal from it unlike his main body]]. Once All For One is restored to his prime and begins blasting away the heroes, looking for an opening to steal some Quirks and head to Shigaraki, Tokoyami sneaks up behind him and overwhelms him with a similar fearsome pressure that All For One inflicts upon his enemies with the aid of Pixie-Bob and the storm providing the darkness necessary to amplify is powers.]]
** [[spoiler:All For One lets loose a giant explosion to try and get away then fires black lightning or tendrils...and Tokoyami shrugs it off with no visible damage and resumes the chase. This is notable, as All Might is the only other person to ever tank a ''direct'' hit from All For One and get right back up without injury. Though later on, it takes All For One attacking him with a ''massive'' beam of light, one so strong that it annihilated the arm he fired from, to dispel Dark Shadow's Total Release form.]]
* NotQuiteFlight: His Black Fallen Angel technique that he developed as a result of his internship with Hawks. Using his Quirk's natural ability to levitate he's able to have Dark Shadow carry him in his arms and grant him the ability to fly.
* NotSoStoic:
** He does have his moments when he can't always keep his cool. When his classmates got a good look at his gothic dorm room, he's sulking and angrily yells at them to get the hell out.
** A more dramatic example: during the Forest Training Camp Arc, when Dark Shadow goes berserk, Tokoyami can be seen crying in agony from the intense duress it causes him. To boot, he has to watch as it targets his friends.
** [[spoiler:In chapter 271, he breaks down crying while holding his injured mentor Hawk after escaping from Dabi's grasp.]]
** [[spoiler:Awkwardly informs Jiro when carrying her in their fight against All For One that she shouldn't move her butt too much, otherwise he'll become flustered. Jiro is not amused by this, understandably.]]
* OddFriendship: Seemingly starts developing one with Shoji from the Forest Training Camp Arc onward, showing that a [[MultiArmedAndDangerous six armed]] GentleGiant and a {{bird|People}}-headed chuunibyou {{Goth}} really can be friends.
* PersonalityPowers: CastingAShadow -> Gothic, brooding guy implied to have a "[[http://en.dic.pixiv.net/a/Chuunibyou chuunibyou]]" complex (the "Evil Eye" type). On the other hand, given how he ''does'' have powers, it's also spoofed. Not to mention it is a legitimate power and dangerous.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: At 158 centimeters (5'2"), Tokoyami is the second shortest male in Class 1-A after the miniature Mineta, but is explicitly stated to be one of its strongest fighters. It's notable that his full power was enough to [[spoiler:completely shatter All For One's life support helmet to pieces. While Jiro and Hawks had weakened it, it'd still proved itself nigh impossible to damage.]]
* PowersDoTheFighting: His Dark Shadow pretty much does all the fighting for him. [[CripplingOverspecialization This leaves him rather helpless in situations where he can't rely on his shadow]], and All Might suggests he work on his own body as well.
* PreAssKickingOneLiner: He delivers a fantastic one to [[spoiler:[[TheDreaded All For One]] in the FinalBattle]] just before he fully unleashes Dark Shadow on him:
-->''' Tokoyami:''' Even darkness comes in a range of shades. ''So you don't get to speak of'' '''The Dark'''. The muddied, dismal darkness you brought about... [[BadassBoast we've already]] [[ThePowerOfFriendship devoured it whole]]!!!
* PurpleIsTheNewBlack: He's a dark shade of purple, and [[PurpleIsPowerful also one of the stronger heroes]] in Class 1-A. His room is also almost completely dark with the only sources of light being purple, including candles, skulls, a crystal ball, and some kind of animal's head with glowing eyes.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:Is particularly incensed over All For One using his {{Chuunibyou}} obsession with "darkness" in order to become a ShadowDictator instead of respect it as an actually awesome thing in its own right [[DarkIsNotEvil that can be used for good]].]]
--> '''Tokoyami:''' Even darkness comes in a range of shades. ''So you don't get to speak of'' '''The Dark'''. The muddied, dismal darkness you brought about... [[BadassBoast we've already]] [[ThePowerOfFriendship devoured it whole]]!!!
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Subverted. Despite these red eyes being paired with a [[CreepyCrows a dark bird-like appearance]] and [[DarkIsEvil a powerful shadow-based Quirk]], Tokoyami himself is valiant and compassionate.
* RedIsHeroic: Besides his red eyes, he also wears a red choker in honor of a pro hero he admires, Dark Crystal.
* TheSacredDarkness: Ultimately, Tokoyami seems to view his darkness themed powers in this regard. [[spoiler:He flat out spells it out to All For One that he views All For One's darkness as 'muddled, dismal darkness,' while his is a different shade altogether.]]
* {{Samurai}}: Present Mic actually calls him one, but whether or not he is or it's just part of his [[RuleOfCool "coolness"]] hasn't been explored. Tokoyami does have a very poetic and respectful way of speaking, would bow after defeating Yaoyorozu and Ashido, and has an ''actual sword'' in his dorm room. All of which could imply that he's either the real deal or just cool like that.
* ShoutOut: Tokoyami is a male version of ComicBook/{{Raven}}. [[BeastMan Aside from obviously looking like a raven]], Tokoyami possesses both a somewhat reserved demeanor as well as a certain [[CastingAShadow control of darkness]] that he sometimes loses, resulting in a SuperpoweredEvilSide.
* SignificantBirthDate: Tokoyami's birthday is October 30, one day before Halloween, sometimes called Devil's Night.
* TheStoic: One of the more cool-headed students of Class 1-A, and overall a no-nonsense kind of person. Then again, a bird head doesn't allow for much expression either way.
* SuperMode: [[spoiler:Burying himself in the earth and using the darkness of the storm generated by the FinalBattle allows him and Dark Shadow to enter a 'Full Release' version of his Abyssal Black Body technique. The end result is Tokoyami controlling a ''{{Kaiju}}-sized'' Dark Shadow powerful enough even ''All For One'' panics before it and acknowledges it poses a genuine threat to him. Not only is he absurdly powerful, he's also extremely ''durable'', enough to NoSell a gigantic explosion from All For One point blank and only be knocked back by the force. The fact the light from the blast didn't seem to hurt him also implies his WeakenedByTheLight vulnerability is lessened due to the sheer amount of power he has.]]
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: At nighttime, Dark Shadow actively works to take control of his body, and the trade-off is an insane amount of raw power that perhaps only One For All could match. He gradually gains more control over it.
* ToothyBird: He's got a set of human-like choppers inside his beak.
* UnskilledButStrong: His Quirk at max power can easily beat enemies that even [[TheAce Todoroki]] or [[GeniusBruiser Bakugo]] would have trouble with, and it's implied that in this state, only All Might can match him power for power. But his control over this form is very limited. He eventually gets around this by developing his Ragnarok technique, which lets Dark Shadow off the leash just long enough to deliver an attack. This also showcases just ''how'' strong he is, as he's able to [[spoiler:shatter All For One's life support helmet to pieces after Jiro and Hawks damaged it. His ''max'' power is so immense even All For One realizes he ''has'' to dodge his attacks.]]
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Really downplayed example, but it was his curb-stomping of Yaoyorozu in the U.A. Sports Festival that started her crippling self-confidence problems she had until the Final Exams Arc.
* VocalDissonance: He's the shortest guy (after Mineta) in Class 1-A and looks like a bird of prey, but has the deepest voice.

-->'''--Dark Shadow, In the dark'''

Tokoyami's Quirk, which has a very literal mind of its own.
----
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: Dark Shadow has a bird head as well.
* AxCrazy: Dark Shadow is this when fully controlling Tokoyami in complete darkness. It crushes everything within its path and enjoys the destruction.
* TheBerserker: At its zenith, Dark Shadow takes control of Tokoyami and attacks everything in sight, completely out of control and deranged.
* CharacterCatchphrase: Dark Shadow tends to reply to Tokoyami's commands with "Aye-aye!"
* CowardlyLion: When weakened enough, it becomes fearful and shies away from violence, but still carries out Tokoyami's commands in a fight.
* DarkIsEvil: While it is not inherently evil, it becomes quite destructive when it gets out of Tokoyami's control, becoming a mass of shadows that tries to engulf him while attacking even those he considers friends.
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: Its name "Dark Shadow" is a quite blatant example of this.
* FirstNameBasis: Dark Shadow is the only individual who calls Tokoyami by his first name, Fumikage.
* {{Flight}}: You could be forgiven for thinking it's just weightless and just floats easily in the air by using a single leverage point, but it actually is flying. Tokoyami exploits this for his Black Fallen Angel supermove to fly himself.
* {{Foil}}: To Tokoyami himself. Tokoyami is cool-headed, cooperative, and noble. Dark Shadow is either childish and sheepish, or bloodthirsty and unstable.
* GuardianEntity: Dark Shadow is a spirit-like entity that Tokoyami can command.
* {{Kaiju}}: [[spoiler:Tokoyami manages to empower it enough during the FinalBattle for it to grow to such gargantuan size that its eye dwarfs All For One.]]
* LivingShadow: Dark Shadow appears to have its own mind and personality despite being just an extension of Tokoyami's body, and in a brief flashback in Chapter 381, [[spoiler:it appears to have grown up along with Tokoyami, being much smaller and more childlike in the flashback of Tokoyami as a toddler.]]
* LogicalWeakness: As it's made of shadows, light reduces it.
* MoodSwinger: Its personality varies depending on its strength. Most of the time, it's a loyal and obedient companion. However, when on the receiving end of too much light, it becomes cowardly and reluctant to fight, while too much darkness causes it to be sullen and willful, which can eventually graduate to out-of-control rage if not dealt with.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Dark Shadow is given very rough pencil shading, a clear contrast to the clean lines and ink of other characters. In the anime Dark Shadow's shading is re-rendered each frame, making his more ethereal form even more apparent.
* OneWingedAngel: Dark Shadow's 'berserk state' becomes far larger and more monstrous, on top of becoming ''far'' stronger. [[spoiler:During the FinalBattle, Tokoyami feeds Dark Shadow's power with both the darkness of the storm the clash has generated and letting himself be buried in earth. The end result is Dark Shadow growing to ''{{Kaiju}} size'' and capable of making All For One have an OhCrap.]]
* PowerIncontinence: When it gets too dark, it acts on its own, with Tokoyami taking a backseat.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Dark Shadow's SupernaturalGoldEyes become red whenever it goes berserk.
* SamusIsAGirl: Chapter 84 of ''Manga/MyHeroAcademiaSmash'' implies that this is the case, as when a villain's Quirk gives Dark Shadow a physical body, it's that of a little girl with long black hair that Mineta nicknames "Kokage".
* StringyHairedGhostGirl: It's human form in chapter 84 of ''My Hero Academia Smash!!'' is designed like this, being a small girl with long, messy black hair wearing an oversized white tee-shirt.
* SummonBiggerFish: During the Training Camp arc, Dark Shadow takes over Tokoyami's body, gaining a massive power boost with the drawback of being more aggressive and feral, but he proves to be the muscle Midoriya and Shoji need to take down Moonfish, with the villain lasting all of ten seconds against him.
* WeakenedByTheLight: Dark Shadow becomes weaker when faced with light, but this also makes it easier to control for Tokoyami. His character sketch mentions that a fully weakened Dark Shadow could be beaten by a cockroach.
* YourSizeMayVary: Dark Shadow varies in size depending on how powerful it is at the moment. At its weakest, it's only the size of a hand, while at its strongest, it's big enough to tear down trees with ease.

->''"If you wanna stop this, then stand up! Because I've just got one thing to say to you! Never forget who you want to become!"''
\
A serious, determined, uncommunicative but well-meaning student enrolled by recommendation, he is the son of Endeavor (Enji Todoroki), a famous hero ranking behind only All Might himself. His Quirk is "Half-Cold Half-Hot", which allows him to generate and control large amounts of ice and fire from his right and left sides, respectively. Raised by Endeavor for the sole purpose of surpassing All Might, Todoroki hates how his father only views him as a tool and had originally vowed to become the number one hero without ever using his fire abilities as a form of rebellion.

Due to his rough and isolated upbringing, Shoto is painfully clueless in social situations, [[TheComicallySerious which is often a source of comedy in-series]].

----
* AbusiveParents: Endeavor subjected Todoroki to intense training at five years old to the point where he vomited and couldn't even stand. His abuse doesn't just stop there, [[DomesticAbuse as it affected his mother so badly]] that she mentally snapped and unintentionally splashed boiling water across her son's face.
* TheAce: One of four first-year students recommended to enroll in U.A., with the others including Yaoyorozu, as well as Tokage and Honenuki from class 1-B. He's the undisputed strongest of the class by a wide margin, even stronger than Bakugo himself - which is why Bakugo wants to defeat him at full strength. Midoriya notes during their match that ''all'' of Todoroki's abilities are strong (not just his Quirk) and his official stats reflect this, being the same as Bakugo's except for a higher Cooperativeness rating.
* AchillesHeel:
** Since he almost always only uses his ice powers, he can't effectively defend his left flank. His father Endeavor calls him an idiot for it. When he eventually starts utilizing his fire abilities he finds that he's grown so accustomed to his ice powers that he tends to immediately default to them. He doesn't wind up shaking off this AchillesHeel in full until extensively training with his fire powers and figuring out the right way to use them over the course of several months.
** Adding onto the above, he has a lot of trouble using both his ice and fire powers at the same time or getting them to work in concert. This was a major problem he ran into in the Provisional Hero License Exam, where switching from one power to the other took a critical agonizing second that his enemies were easily able to exploit.
** Todoroki has been shown to be over reliant on his Quirk to the point that he wasn't trained in close quarters combat. His fights against Eraser Head and Tetsutetsu show that if someone gets past his Quirk, he doesn't have the skills to fight in melee combat.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter:
** To Bakugo. Taking his place as the strongest of the class, which rubs Bakugo's massive ego the very wrong way.
** Yaoyorozu, the other student who got in through a recommendation in class 1-A, also saw him as this in regards to herself. This was subverted when Todoroki admitted that Yaoyorozu was a better leader and strategist.
* AllLovingHero: While not as overt as Midoriya's motivation to be a hero, Shoto is a kind person who wants to be a hero that makes others feel safe. This even extends his own [[spoiler:long lost estranged brother Toya, with whom he wants to understand and even share a meal with if possible.]]
* AnimalMotif: Alongside Ochaco, the volume 30 character page depicts him as a cat, and it makes sense given in his case they can be aloof but affectionate after some warming up. There's also some art with him and cats.
* ApologisesALot: He tends [[https://i.ibb.co/p3kLc25/Angry-sorry.jpg to apologize a lot]] for {{Curb Stomp}}ing his opponents [[ApologeticAttacker in battles]] and [[https://i.ibb.co/BC2Sf2g/Sorry.jpg outside battles]]. Could be a habit he fell into due to his strict upbringing.
* AscendedExtra: Starting from the U.A. Sports Festival Arc, he becomes a main character.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: His hair colors represent exactly the sides where his ice (white) and fire (red) powers manifest.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: He's the first person besides All For One to recognize that the similarity between Midoriya and All Might's Quirks is more than just a coincidental passing resemblance on his own, and correctly deduces that there's more to their relationship than is readily apparent based on Midoriya's choice of words. Though the [[ComicallyMissingThePoint conclusion he drew from that was incorrect]], it made sense based on the information he had available. He's also able to deduce that many of the villains in the USJ Arc are just a bunch of thugs and that the real dangerous villains (which were in another area) are only five or so just by analyzing the situation and the villains' motive.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: The youngest of four siblings of the family. His older brother is in college, his older sister is a teacher, [[spoiler:and his oldest brother was believed to have died, but instead shows up as Dabi from the League of Villains.]]
* BadassBoast: He has his few moments, like when he tells Midoriya he'll rise above him with just his right side or when he delivers the lines "losing against a child is pathetic for an adult" to a bunch of villains he easily defeated in the USJ Arc.
* BandagedFace: As of chapter 298 onwards, Todoroki's whole face — excluding his eyes and mouth, of course — and even his throat and arms are bandaged due to the severe injuries and burns he suffered during the Paranormal Liberation War.
* BerserkButton: Comparing him to Endeavor is a quick way to get under his skin.
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Aizawa's life from Shigaraki in Chapter 282.
* BlemishedBeauty: He has a prominent burn scar over one eye. This doesn't stop Mina from considering him the "preeminent pretty boy" of the class.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: During the Winter Internship Arc, he is the Redhead to Bakugo's Blonde and Midoriya's Brunette.
* TheBore: Due to Todoroki's SociallyInept nature, he fails at connecting with the elementary school kids he was assigned to take care of for an exam ''twice'' because of his [[SpockSpeak flat tone and matter-of-fact language]]. As a result, they find him quite boring and refuse to listen to him.
-->'''Todoroki''' ''[takes a deep breath]'': My name is not [[MaliciousMisnaming five weenies]]. [[VerbalBusinessCard I'm Shoto, a U.A. student who wants to be a hero]]. My father, Endeavor, is the current No. 1 hero, but I've always hated him. So I set my sights on becoming a hero to get back at him. I didn't mesh well with my classmates and-\
'''Present Mic:''' [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall He's talking like a character introduction page]]!\
'''[[BrattyHalfPint The group of children he is talking to]]:''' ...So boring.\
'''Present Mic:''' ...And no one likes him!
* BoringButPractical: His second hero costume is plain and unadorned, but it's fireproof and mitigates his Quirk's drawbacks.
* BreakTheCutie: As a child, he was sweet and pretty much a normal child. Thanks to [[ParentalIssues his father's abusive training, his mother's psychotic breakdown]], and his isolation from his siblings, he grew up to be a cold and socially awkward person.
* BreakTheHaughty: He began the story as a detached person, so self-sufficient and powerful that he earned the title "instant killer" because of how quick he was at taking opponents with a single move and all by himself, as he declared that he isn't here to make friends. Later on, his poor teamwork with Yoarashi makes him fail the license exam but he admits that it taught him a lesson. And he also deals with opponents that are stronger than him or at least not easily defeated who make him realize he still has a long way to go.
* BrokenAce: Todoroki is attractive, powerful, skilled, and intelligent, but he has a lot of emotional baggage because of his abusive father.
* BrokenRecord: Though it's not clear if he intended to annoy Bakugo or not, Todoroki kept repeating the phrase "we need to catch up as soon as possible" three times[[note]]as they were the only two students in the class who failed the provisional license exam[[/note]] till Bakugo snapped and told him to stop saying that the second time and to shut up before he even finished the sentence the third time. [[RunningGag He also repeats it again in another episode]], much to Bakugo's irritation.
* BrutalHonesty: Has his moments.
-->'''Bakugo''': (after Kota [[GroinAttack punches Midoriya in the balls]]) Precocious brat.\
'''Todoroki''': Isn't he kind of like you?\
'''Bakugo''': [[IResembleThatRemark WHAT?! NOT AT ALL!!]]
* BurnScarsBurningPowers: He has fire powers and has a burn scar across his face thanks to his mother scalding his face with boiling water during a mental break.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: He was so focused on his vendetta against his father in his entrance examination to U.A. that he acted needlessly cold to a student that would later gain a grudge against him. Ironically, this was also when said student was trying to befriend him. Said student would then develop a grudge and leave U.A. for Shinketsu just so he wouldn't be in the same school as Todoroki.
* ByronicHero: He's an attractive, brooding teenager who's deeply conflicted because of his DarkAndTroubledPast and whose refusal to go all out with his fire powers (and by extension his rejection of his father) and IWorkAlone attitude were quite destructive to him prior to his CharacterDevelopment.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to [[spoiler:his eldest brother, Toya a.k.a Dabi]], who planned to kill him and managed to burn him severely.
* CallingTheOldManOut: Todoroki doesn't waste a chance at throwing jabs or snide remarks at his father, like the time he went to intern at his fathers' agency of his free will:
-->'''Todoroki:''' Sorry, I only came here because it's convenient Number One. [So] don't put on the parent act in front of my friends.
* CharacterDevelopment: Following the U.A. Sports Festival, Todoroki becomes more and more willing to use his fire powers, befriend and interact with people, and just generally be a kinder, warmer person. The ultimate move he uses against Dabi during the final arc, Phosphor, reflects this. It's an attack that combines his fire and ice into a perfect whole, the sides he got from his father and mother respectively, and is gentle to the touch like Shoto is at his core. It shows that at long last he's at peace with who he is and his family.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: He was considerably more callous in the USJ Arc, being that the only reason he refused to kill a villain was that it would make him look bad. Even then, he doesn't bother saving the villain either, just telling him to get out of the ice quickly so he won't die and tarnish his reputation.
* CheerfulChild: What he used to be before Endeavor [[BreakTheCutie broke him]].
* ChekhovsGunman: He was the other student who voted for Yaororozu in the election for class president, believing that she would be best suited to the responsibility. This becomes crucial in the Final Exams Arc when Yaoyorozu is suffering a crisis of self-confidence, thanks in large part to comparing her performance thus far unfavorably to Todoroki's; hearing that he supported her for class rep because he believes in her intelligence and leadership helps her regain her confidence and formulate a plan to defeat Aizawa.
* ChekhovsSkill: Downplayed. From his experiences in getting a rowdy kindergarten class to mind by showing them the fun side to being heroes, he recognizes that the best way to get U.A. to de-stress is to throw a concert so everyone can let loose and enjoy themselves.
* ClarkKentOutfit: When out of uniform, he typically wears loose or baggy clothes that hide just how toned he is. This includes his hero costume.
* ClingyChild: The cover page of chapter 166 shows him when he was an incredibly shy child going to school with his parents while clinging to his mother's legs as he's closer to her than his father.
* ClothingDamage: Whenever he fights outside of his hero costume, he burns half his shirt off.[[note]]While this doesn't occur during the Forest Training Camp Arc, he couldn't use his fire powers without potentially lighting the woods on fire.[[/note]]
* CluelessChickMagnet: It's strongly implied during the dorm room tour that several of his female classmates view him as handsome and desirable, though Todoroki has no idea of this.
** He also fails to pick up on Mt. Lady's flirting during the hero interview training, taking them way too literally.
** In the Remedial Course Arc, Camie from Shiketsu High also hits on him more than once and asks for his number, which he innocently agrees to give to her, but he's as still oblivious as ever.
** Given more detail in one of the light novels. The 1-A girls and four of the 1-B girls are talking about who's boyfriend material in their classes during the training camp, and they all agree that Shoto Todoroki is a highly favorable candidate. Unfortunately, the biggest obstacle is Endeavor, who would at the time, either have too high of standards or outright disapprove of the relationship.
* ComboPlatterPowers: He possesses [[PlayingWithFire fire]] and [[AnIcePerson ice]] powers.
* TheComicallySerious: Todoroki's reserved but earnest personality is often used for humor when it is contrasted against his more enthusiastic classmates.
** In Chapter 57, he worries that people's hands get hurt whenever he gets involved, referring to Midoriya's injuries during the U.A. Sports Festival and Iida's injuries against Stain, thinking he may be [[TheJinx cursed]] as a "hand smasher". Iida and Midoriya think he's making a joke, but he's actually not, which only makes them laugh even harder.
** When his classmates see his dorm room, they're completely baffled because somehow he managed to refurbish the entire room to match his more traditional Japanese household, complete with tatami mats and a traditional sliding door. They ask him how it was possible for him to do this in ''one day''. His response? "I worked really hard."
** In Chapter 183, he joins Ida in posing for a ''face board''. And although his side has a drawing of Nezu, he still looks just as serious as ever.
* CommonalityConnection: Strongly emphasized with Iida's fury against Stain for crippling his brother, noting that he himself knows all too well what being driven by resentment looks like.
* CostumeEvolution: His first hero costume solely focused on his icy half, while having his fiery half encased in ice as if to make him "fully icy", bearing a plain white color scheme similar to his mother's appearance. When he became more comfortable around his classmates, he stopped using the mask. After the events of the U.A. School Festival, he has found peace with using his fire side, and now his hero costume accommodates both his fire and ice powers with a built-in temperature regulator. The color scheme also matches that of his father's while keeping some aspects of his mother incorporated into the design.
* CracksInTheIcyFacade: [[TheStoic Shoto Todoroki]] was first introduced as a cold, aloof and emotional distant boy with hates his father and is limiting his potential with his quirk in order to spite him. He reveals to Midoriya before their match in the Sports Festival that the reason he hates his father his because he's an AbusiveParent who put him through TrainingFromHell while simultaneously beating his mother until eventually, the mother snaps and throws boiling water on his face giving him his scar. Then, during their match, Midoriya in response, Midoriya calls him out for not going all out like everyone else just to spite his father and how his powers are '''his''' and his alone. This sparks him to be more willing to use both sides of his quirk, including his fire side, as well as try to be an overall more open and caring person. This even pushes him to (begrudgingly) accept help from his father to learn how to hone his fire side, and later on [[spoiler:even give him the chance to be forgiven for his actions once he finally starts his redemption.]]
* CripplingOverspecialization: Initially, he only relied on his ice Quirk for combat, resulting in him having little control over his fire Quirk when he starts using it later. Stain and Aizawa both mention how his total dependence on his Quirk alone makes him more vulnerable at close range. This gets deconstructed in his fight with Midoriya. Even though he was fully aware of how much energy he was expending by only using his ice powers and how much it was costing him (frostbite), and despite not landing a single blow on Midoriya, he still doesn't change his strategy. If it weren't for Midoriya's RousingSpeech convincing him to use his fire powers, there's no doubt that ultimately he would've collapsed first.
** This comes up again in the training exercise between Class 1-A and 1-B. Hokuneki is able to melt his signature ice torrent, while Tetsutetsu is able to resist both of his elements, putting him and his team at a significant disadvantage. [[CharacterDevelopment This is what convinces him that he needs to learn how to better utilize his powers]].
* CurbStompBattle:
** Beat his opponents alone in no time during the Hero vs. Villain exercise.
** He actually does it to ''real'' villains during the USJ Arc.
** To Sero in the U.A. Sports Festival, though he honestly apologizes for that one.
* DamnYouMuscleMemory: Because he spent so much time relying on just his ice powers, his default action when in battle is to use it primarily. It tends to work for him most of the time, but when he encounters opponents who can counter his ice, he tends to struggle since he isn't as used to relying on his fire side until recently. Also, because of [[spoiler:his brother Toya apparently dying from overusing his flames]], he subconsciously limits his power so he doesn't hurt himself or those around him. However, this is called out since heroes are supposed to push themselves beyond their limits. Plus, Shoto's Quirk lacks the weaknesses of his dad's [[spoiler:and oldest brother's.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Shoto was very young when he saw his family collapse after Endeavor's TrainingFromHell with [[spoiler:his oldest son Toya backfired when he attempted to teach him a DangerousForbiddenTechnique and learned that while Toya may have had hotter flames, he was weaker than his dad in handling them.]] Following [[spoiler:Toya's assumed death,]] Endeavor started giving Shoto TrainingFromHell upon seeing his Quirk and believed that he would not be impeded like Endeavor himself. All the while, the rest of his siblings could only watch in fear and horror. And then his mother had a psychotic break and poured boiling water on his face by accident, giving him a large scar over his left eye.
* ADayInTheLimelight: During the U.A. Sports Festival Arc, which not only showed off his match with Midoriya but also delved into the rough relationship Todoroki has with his father, Endeavor.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Inverted. Although Midoriya was defeated by him, his insistence and drive to help Todoroki gets through to him and they start to become friends. This does not seem to happen in Bakugo's case, as after their fight, Bakugo sees his throwing away the fight as an insult and hates him. Todoroki, on the other hand [[ObliviousToHatred seems to genuinely view him as a friend]] much to his irritation.
-->''(During an interview)''\
'''Todoroki:''' That’s right, we’re friends.\
'''Bakugo:''' HUH!?? WHERE THE HELL DO YOU GET OFF MAKING UP RANDOM CRAP LIKE THAT YOU ICY-HOT IDIOT!?
* DefrostingIceKing: Almost literally, humorously enough. While he was never mean to anyone, he was distant from everyone in the class at the start of the story. However, he defrosts after starting to use his fire powers more instead of focusing entirely on his ice abilities. After the U.A. Sports Festival, he becomes closer to Midoriya, his first friend in U.A., if not ever, even visiting him in the hospital, and events in the Stain and Final Exams Arcs bring him closer to Iida and Yaoyorozu, respectively. In the succeeding arcs, he's on good terms with the rest of his classmates and even considers ''Bakugo'' his friend by the time of the Endeavor Internship arc.
* DualityMotif: He has fire and ice powers inherited from his father and mother, respectively. Both his hair and eyes are two different colors split down the middle, each matching his parents', with either half of his powers only able to be used from that half, ice for his right side and fire for his left side. He also has a burn scar covering the left side of his face. In this case, it all represents his family issues and childhood trauma. With a deep hatred for his AbusiveDad, he considers his left side a curse and refuses to use his fire powers for a good chunk of the series. His initial hero costume, when he relied entirely on his ice powers, also tries to subvert this by covering up the entirety of his left half in an ice motif.
* ElementalBaggage: He can produce a glacier-sized amount of ice out of thin air without much apparent effort, enough to swallow half a stadium, as well as massive torrents of flame that should logically consume a lot of energy,
* ElementalEyeColors: Inverted. He has a blue left eye but his fire powers come from his left side.
* ElementalHairColors: To reflect his ice-and-fire powers, his hair is half-white and half-red. Both sides also indicate which side controls which.
* ElementalPersonalities: His Quirk lets him produce vast streams of ice and fire. At the start of the story, he exclusively uses his ice powers to spite his father, resulting him being cold, stoic, and fixated on becoming a hero without using his fire powers. But once Midoriya forces Todoroki to realize that his fire powers are his own, Todoroki [[DefrostingIceKing begins to defrost]], showcasing far more warmth and empathy while retaining his burning passion to become a hero.
* EpiphanyTherapy: [[{{Reconstruction}} Reconstructed]]. Yes, Todoroki is still not over the trauma of his past until he assesses what happened and makes a conscious attempt to address it, since a simple speech cannot fix all of the problems so shortly. However, Todoroki only begins to move forward and address the various problems and complexities of his life because Izuku gave him the supportive words and advice he desperately needed. He begins reconnecting with his mother, practices using his fire powers, becomes more open and cooperative with his teammates, swallows his pride to work with his dad even if he understandably doesn't forgive him, and becomes a happier and more stable person.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Yes, he may have a really rotten relationship with his dad, but he still cares about him. He's in a state of immense stress and almost panic seeing his father fight the High-End Nomu, especially when he gets wounded pretty badly, on television. When Endeavor wins, he pretty much collapses on his knees in sheer relief.
* FamilyEyeResemblance: Yoarashi mentions that Todoroki's eyes look just like his father's. His mother also noted that he was growing to look more and more like Endeavor when he was a kid.
* FatalFlaw:
** His IWorkAlone tendencies. Due to his general uncooperativeness and arrogance, Todoroki can be prone to underestimating his opponents and be a terrible team player. He's often very confident that he can win all on his own and doesn't need anyone's help which bites him in the ass in the Licensing Exam, which he failed due to poor teamwork, and during his fight against Gang Orca and Tetsutetsu. He fully overcomes this in his final fight with [[spoiler:Dabi, fighting alongside Endeavor's sidekicks to counteract his brother's flames despite his crazed sibling's desire for a one-on-one deathmatch between them]], which allows him to ultimately win when they step in to [[TakingTheBullet blunt a flame attack]] hot enough to overcome even Shoto's resistance to heat, allowing him to land his own FinishingMove [[spoiler:on Dabi]] when he's wide open.
** Spite. Todoroki can be downright spiteful at times to others, mostly his father. Because of his hatred for Endeavor for abusing him and his family, Todoroki's desire to be a hero was more motivated to spite his father rather than improve himself and help others. This often caused him to sabotage himself led him to have a mediocre experience using his flames, shown in his match with Tetsutetsu. [[spoiler:He's fully overcome this by the time of his final fight with Dabi, sympathizing with his sibling's hatred towards their father, but calling him out on involving others outside their family drama, attempting to take him down to stop him hurting unrelated individuals.]]
* FireWaterJuxtaposition: He can use both fire and ice powers, the fruits of [[DomesticAbuse an abusive relationship between his fire-using father and ice-using mother]]. His body is split into a fire and an ice side and he is more inclined to use the latter as he hates his father.
* FieryRedhead: Played with. Not only is he only technically half a redhead (only on his left side), but he has a cool demeanor in general. However, things get more fiery when he uses his fire quirk, which most of the time is amplified when he ''does'' get angry.
* FieryStoic: He's a stoic hero who controls fire. Part of the reason he's this way is that he [[SuperpowerLottery also]] has [[AnIcePerson control over ice]] and tries to avoid using his fire powers to spite his father. Even when he does come to terms with his fire side, he still remains calm and collected but has his moments of getting riled up or unleashing an extremely passionate side of himself.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: With Yoarashi whom he barely acknowledged upon competing with him during the U.A. entrance exams and coldly ignoring his attempt at befriending him. This becomes a plot point later on, as both he and Yoarashi have to work together during the Provisional License exams and Yoarashi's unwillingness to cooperate with Shoto no matter the circumstances causes both of them to try to one-up each other during the rescue tests, costing them their graduation and sending both of them to the Remedial Course.
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: Todoroki is mild-mannered and temperate which shows in his polite way of speaking with others.
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse:
** A bizarre example in that he's not a villain, but his excuse is still called out. Midoriya feels sympathy for Todoroki's crappy childhood due to his father. However, he still calls out Todoroki for only using half his Quirk since it insults every other hero, aspiring and professional, by not giving it his all, purely to spite his dad despite that, ultimately Todoroki is just shooting himself in the foot.
** He himself gives a brief one to his [[spoiler:older brother Dabi about how they both had the same hellish childhood but he's the one who chose to be a murderer and to take innocent people's lives who have nothing to do with his trauma on his own.]]
* FreudianTrio: Of the main trio who intern under Endeavor together, Todoroki, who's aloof, cold, and quiet, is the Superego to Bakugo's Id and Midoriya's Ego.
* AFriendInNeed:
** He's able to deduce that Midoriya's in trouble after seeing the message the latter sent to the class' group chat. He ditched his own father to go to the exact location and saved Midoriya and Ida just in time. This landed the three of them in hot water for breaking the law, but the police were able to cover up the incident.
** After listening to Midoriya and Bakugo's predicament over being unable to intern at their original hero agencies, Todoroki offers them internships at Endeavor's office. They accept.
* FriendlyRivalry: Despite everything that happened during the U.A. Sports Festival, Todoroki eventually considers Midoriya this. That being said, they do become closer and are very friendly toward each other.
* TheGift: He has an extraordinarily powerful Quirk, and has the talent and physical abilities to use it effectively.
* GoodEyesEvilEyes: Not really evil, but this is used to reflect his rage and inner conflict. When Yoarashi was talking to Todoroki, his eyes were shown to be similar to Endeavor's. When he brushed off Yoarashi, it disgusted him so much that he left U.A. for Shinketsu. Once he gets over his inner demons, his eyes are shown to be gentler.
* HarmlessFreezing: Subverted. He can seriously injure or even kill people with his ice, and actually ''froze off'' two of the first Nomu's limbs. He later mentions he can't restrain Stain with it for similar reasons. While he does later use ice to restrain opponents, he's constantly careful, even when going overboard with the amount of ice, to never obstruct their breathing or keep their bodies frozen for too long.
* HatesTheirParent: Played straight at the beginning, as Todoroki truly loathed his father, the #2 hero Endeavor, for trying to turn him into a {{Tykebomb}} through intense training in an unloving home. As a result, he refused to use the fire Quirk he inherited from his father and only relied on the ice Quirk he inherited from his mother to spite his dad. However, after receiving a RousingSpeech from Midoriya and a dose of CharacterDevelopment, his stance considerably softens over time when he sees his father begin to improve and even swallows his pride to learn under the man. He also shows genuine concern for his father during his fight against High-End.
* HeroWorshipper: Of All Might when he was a child. Having Midoriya bring sense back into him reminds him of this.
* HeroicLineage: His father is Endeavor, the #2 hero, who is only topped by All Might.
* HeroicRROD: According to his character notes, overusing his ice powers without regulating his body heat through his fire side will cause him to suffer frostbite. In Chapter 38, he starts shivering during his match with Midoriya since he's forced to generate more and more ice, while Midoriya keeps sending the cold back with each of his shockwaves. It's implied something similar would happen if Shoto overused his fire powers without also using his ice side, and Endeavor notes this was the advantage Shoto had over him and Toya, Shoto's eldest brother.
* HiddenDepths: The brooding, anti-social loner? He actually wants to become a genuine hero. Heck, he was inspired by All Might when he was a child.
* HisOwnWorstEnemy: Shoto is highly intelligent with an incredibly powerful Quirk and has everything it takes to become a top-ranking pro hero. However, his refusal to go all out with his powers (either using his fire at all or using both at full potential) based on a mix of spite and fear hampers considerably and something Endeavor harps on him for and Izuku calls him out on. The growing challenges he faces is forcing him to confront this.
* HybridPower: He gained his father's fire and mother's ice. While Endeavor did intend, it was more out of the sense that Shoto lacks the realistic weaknesses of over-using either ice or fire since he can use the other to maintain stability.
* IAmNotMyFather: Todoroki's most consistent trait is his rejection of any and all comparisons to Endeavor. This is {{deconstructed|Trope}} since this is what impaired him from moving on or keeping his full potential since he just used to rely solely on his ice and not his fire, viewing it like his dad. Once Midoriya gets him to realize it's his power and not his dad's, Todoroki is able to move on. He is also able to objectively learn from Endeavor because for all the man's personal failings, he ''earned'' his spot as the No. 2 Hero from his talent and capabilities.
* IWorkAlone: He separates from the group during the Provisional Hero License Exam, despite Midoriya telling everyone they need to stick together. [[JustifiedTrope However, Todoroki mentions that his Quirk is far-reaching and by being by himself, there's a minimal chance of accidentally hitting a comrade in the crossfire]]. Despite this, he eventually ends up in conflict with a student from a rival school who has a similar far-reaching Quirk of [[BlowYouAway producing gusts]] and with a beef against him. They don't start working together until Midoriya calls them out for their carelessness. Ultimately, he and Bakugo end up being the only U.A. students to fail the exam.
* ImNotHereToMakeFriends: States this about himself to Midoriya before the U.A. Sports Festival and has this attitude towards Inasa Yoarashi upon entering U.A. which earned him a grudge from the latter. Nonetheless, he does [[DefeatMeansFriendship befriend Midoriya after this arc]] and comes to befriend both Ida and Yaoyorozu after the fight with Stain and the final exams, respectively. Sero compares Shinso's similar speech to old Todoroki, to which Todoroki is surprised that he ever sounded like that.
* AnIcePerson: On the right side. He also seems to strongly prefer using it over his fire abilities.
* IcyBlueEyes: His left eye is icy blue like his father. Ironically, this is where his fire powers come out of.
* InSeriesNickname: Bakugo calls him "Half-and-Half Bastard" in Japanese and "Icy-Hot" in the English dub.
* ItsAllMyFault: A tragic case. He interpreted his mother scarring him with boiling water as being (partially) his own fault for triggering her by resembling Endeavor. For years following the event, Shoto avoids visiting Rei on the basis that he would hurt her by showing her his, and by extension Endeavor's, face. And when Rei doesn't hate him, he says she forgave him, showing that he still thinks he was the one who did something wrong.
* TheJinx: He claims Midoriya and Ida's hand injuries are because of him being "cursed" as a "hand smasher", and he had the misfortune of running into an Endeavor-hater during the Provisional Hero License Exam whose animosity and continued interference during the rescue stage of the exam plagued him every step of the way and cost them both passing marks.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2UxtbYPX9c "Kimi no Chikara"]] ("Your Power").
* LethalChef: Downplayed. He's not lethally bad so much as merely "not good", to the point that Bakugo harangues him for the terrible job he did cutting spring onions for the dorm hot pot. In ''Team-Up Mission'', all of Todoroki's initial attempts to make soba for Gantetsu end up failing miserably, only managing to make some satisfying noodles after using his Quirk in tandem with Kaminari's, Yoarashi's, and Shishikura's.
* LetsGetDangerous: When he finally breaks out his left side's fire powers in response to Midoriya [[WhatTheHellHero calling him out for holding back]] during their match. He even responds by telling his opponent it was ''really'' not such a good idea to provoke him.
* LikeParentLikeChild:
** Although he would never admit it, he does have a few traits in common with Endeavor, such as their intense glare and attitude towards the objects of their hatred; All Might for Endeavor and Endeavor himself for Shoto. They're also both LiteralMinded and possess NoSocialSkills. This sets them up for being the ComicallySerious.
** While it isn't as obvious he also seems to take after his mother when it comes to kindness as shown when Deku notes Todoroki wishes to forgive Endeavor and is waiting for the right time to do it, which is contrasted with his older brother Toya who takes more after their father and is willing to use any means to necessary to destroy his father's legacy.
* LiteralMinded: Shoto does not understand metaphors and takes them at face value. This results in some hilarity during the interview training; when Mt. Lady says that seeing him might cause her heart to burst out of her chest, he asks if she has a heart condition, and he was concerned his smile will kill women after she told him that flashing smiles will make a ladykiller. This is mainly [[RuleOfFunny used for humor]], and is {{Lampshaded}} when Mt. Lady demands that he drop the "literal airhead" gimmick.
* LogicalWeakness: The more he uses his ice side, the colder that same side gets as a result of using it consistently, which also means his entire body begins to freeze as a result. As a result, if he overuses his ice powers without using his flame power to warm himself up, his movements slow down, both his physical movements and even the speed at which his ice is used. Bakugo compares it to an MP gauge in an RPG, and when Midoriya fights him in the U.A. Sports Festival, he begins losing as a result of his sluggish movements. There's also the fact that, as strong as his Quirk is, he cannot fight in a controlled environment or alongside allies very well, since his Quirk has a massive spread and area of influence. This, along with a rival student's own far-reaching Gale Quirk and vendetta, causes them to fight one another until Izuku calls them out on it and costs Shoto the test.
* LonelyRichKid: Because Endeavor sheltered him from the world to mold him into his greatest pawn against All Might, Shoto led an isolated, solitary life, despite the presence of his siblings, and thus never really made any friends.
* LonerTurnedFriend: He was very cold and aloof at the start of the series but has gradually warmed up to many of his classmates, becoming more and more sociable and regularly spending time with them, despite remaining mostly serious and quiet but well-meaning, sometimes even seen smiling.
* LongRangeFighter: His Quirk has incredible range and firepower, allowing him to ice dozens of {{Mooks}} at once without even trying. But this power has also made him reliant on it, and he struggles against those fast enough to dodge and close the distance or just tank it to plow through him. However, he's working on improving himself at close range, as seen in his fight with the CloseRangeCombatant Tetsutetsu.
* MadeOfIron: Despite not having a [[SuperToughness durability increasing]] Quirk, Todoroki regularly shows a crazy amount of resilience in direct combat. During the UA Sports Festival alone he takes multiple punches from Midoriya that send him flying; tanks a direct kick to the head from Iida's Recipro Burst; and is even hit by Bakugo's Howitzer Impact. This trend continues during the Joint Training Arc when Todoroki experiences an extending beating from [[ChromeChampion Tetsutestsu]], who's capable of breaking through concrete. It's implied that this toughness comes from experiencing Endeavor's TrainingFromHell since early childhood.
* MagicPants: After his bout against Midoriya in the U.A. Sports Festival, half his shirt has been burned off, but his pants are fine. This is justified with his normal battle attire, which is made of fire-resistant materials.
* MeaningfulName: The Japanese characters that compose his first name mean "freezing" and "heating", respectively. His last name is the kanji for "roar", inherited from his father.
* MentalHealthRecoveryArc: One of his major arcs is getting over his fixation on not using his fire powers out of spite for his AbusiveDad. He's disgusted with himself for even thinking of using it and gains a ThousandYardStare when thinking about the TrainingFromHell he endured. Even after Midoriya goads him into going all out at the Sports Festival, Todoroki consistently struggles to use his fire when compared to his ice but goes from being unwilling to stand in the same room as Endeavor to actively seeking him out for an internship to learn from him. This goes to where the two are able to work together, especially with Endeavor attempting to improve himself.
* MisplacedRetribution: It's implied that some of his issues towards Endeavor are him displacing his negative feelings towards his mother at his father. In particular, his firm refusal to use his fire powers at the start of the series is shown to be strongly related to his mother scarring him.[[note]]The last image he sees before disabling his flames while fighting Bakugo is the sight of his mother's fear and panic right before the kettle incident, and the first time he visits her in the hospital is only after he's made strides in overcoming this issue.[[/note]] In general, it comes off as if he's handled the trauma from that moment by deciding that being like Endeavor was the problem, resulting in a serious amount of self-loathing. He later explains, however, that he believes that since his father's abuse pushed his mother to her breaking point, Endeavor is ultimately responsible for Shoto's scar.
* MommasBoy: He acknowledges that his mother is the one responsible for the burn scars on the left side of his face, but feels that the act was caused largely by the trauma of Endeavor. As such, he is much closer to her and blames himself for some of her problems. It actually requires her to tell him outright that he didn't do anything wrong and that she was sorry for what happened to get through to him.
* MrFanservice: To a much lesser extent than Midoriya, but he does get some scenes of ClothingDamage and a single ShirtlessScene. To boot, his female classmates consider him very handsome.
* MundaneUtility: Those fire powers come in handy for lighting fires when the class has to cook their own dinner.
* MustMakeAmends: After the U.A. Sports Festival Arc, he gets enough courage to visit his mother in the hospital, and visits her every Sunday since then.
* NeverGiveUpSpeech: Inspired by Midoriya's similar speech to him, he delivers one of his own to Iida, who was so consumed by hatred (just like the old Todoroki) during the Hero Killer Arc. He tells a physically paralyzed Iida that if he doesn't want his friends to get hurt because of him, then he ''has to'' stand up and fight.
* NiceGuy: Despite his stoic personality, he is one of the friendlier characters of Class 1-A. While he was antisocial at first, he was never really a {{Jerkass}} to anyone. He is considerate of Momo during the practice against Aizawa, giving Midoriya food when he was in a stressful situation during the Shie Hassaikai arc, and he even forgave his mother for giving him the scar in his childhood.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: In the Endeavor Agency arc, Todoroki is the in-between, being TheStoic but with a soft side, to the [[NiceGuy friendly]] Midoriya and {{jerkass}} mean Bakugo.
* NoSell: During his fight with Dabi, he's able to nullify the heat from Dabi's Flashfire Fist (though not the force behind it) with his own special move: Phosphor. Even when Dabi's flames ''are'' hot enough to injure Shoto, Shoto simply shrugs it off and counterattacks with his ultimate move.
* NoSocialSkills: He's been sheltered for much of his life due to his father's attempts to groom him into a hero to surpass All Might. As a result, he often misses social cues and comes across as LiteralMinded. For instance, when Mt. Lady and Midnight point out his good looks, they tell him [[CluelessChickMagnet girls would die]] for him WhenHeSmiles. He's immediately taken aback by the idea that people would die if he cracked a smile.
* NotSoDifferentRemark:
** He sees a likeness between his old self, filled with contempt for his father and unrelentingly stubborn about not using his full power, and [[spoiler:his big brother, Toya, festering with hatred for his whole family, particularly Shoto and Enji, and fixated on causing them as much misery as possible while destroying his body and others' lives in the process. He thus concludes that Toya is basically him.]]
** Neither he nor Midoriya notice it, but All Might thinks to himself that both of them are very similar, recalling how both of them leaped in to save him from supervillains. Further emphasizing this, both of them have nearly identical thoughts at the beginning of their match worrying about their opponent's power. It turns out Todoroki was also a fan of All Might and was inspired by him to become a genuine hero. Endeavor's abusive parenting made him lose sight of this, but Midoriya's words bring him back.
* NotSoStoic:
** Actually gets fired up during his battle against Midoriya at the U.A. Sports Festival, going from increasingly exasperated that his opponent is resorting to SelfHarm to stay in the fight, to ''furious'' when provoked into unleashing his left side powers.
** He is angered at the Hosu police chief for saying that it was [[ToBeLawfulOrGood illegal for him, Midoriya, and Ida to use their Quirks to fight Stain]]. Todoroki responds by calling him a damn mutt and giving him a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.
** Todoroki shows a great amount of emotion during Endeavor's fight against High-End, ranging from shock and fear to visceral relief as it winds down.
** His fight with Tetsutetsu is extremely painful for both of them and Todoroki gets increasingly frustrated at Tetsutetsu's refusal to back down when his body is '''melting'''.
--->'''Todoroki:''' ''[glaring]'' You're so damn loud!
** When Endeavor is in the middle of a HeroicBSOD and right in the way of a Prominence Burn about to be dealt by Dabi, right after [[spoiler:he spilled the beans about his identity]], Shoto shouts at him to get out of the way, with tears in his eyes.
* NotQuiteFlight: Like his father, he can use his flame for air mobility, although to a lesser extent. He helps Bakugo propel himself and Endeavor into the air to assist Midoriya, who was fighting Shigaraki. He is able to carry Endeavor and maneuver to Bakugo after they are impaled by Shigaraki.
* OhCrap:
** At the end of Chapter 29, when he sees Midoriya charging him with One For All active, his expression is noticeably nervous. He immediately activates his flame powers to defend himself, something he swore he would never do in battle. That's how intimidated he is.
** When Tetsutetsu is about to rearrange his face if he doesn't perform a move that traumatized him as a child, he drops a PrecisionFStrike:
--->[[ThisIsGonnaSuck "Shit."]]
** He is completely off guard when Dabi manages to copy his Phosphor move to stop his own ultimate attack. This leaves him in frozen as Dabi continues his assault and plans to attack Endeavor as his body burns down.
* ObliviousToHatred: Bakugo's insults and drive to surpass him go over Shoto's head. He seriously believes that Bakugo is his friend and has repeatedly addressed him as such.
* OddFriendship: Mostly one-sided on Todoroki's side, as Bakugo constantly insults him and makes it clear he wishes to surpass him to prove he's the strongest. Despite this, Todoroki believes he and Bakugo get along well and sees him as a genuine friend. While it is 'very' subtle, Bakugo seems to consider Shoto a friend and is often observing Shoto or thinking about him. Bakugo even mentions Shoto's sister while ribbing Shoto about his (nonexistent) culinary skills.
* OneManArmy: His powers are extremely useful for dealing with large numbers of enemies.
* OutOfFocus: During the Internship Arc, since he didn't have a license. He doesn't even fight with Mirio, despite the fact that he had challenged the whole class.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Feels this way to his [[spoiler:oldest brother Toya]] due to realizing how [[NotSoDifferentRemark similar they both are in regards to their strained relationship with their father]]. This makes him feel obligated to deal with his brother himself.
* PlayingWithFire: On the left side. Interestingly, he refuses to use it in battle. This is out of spite for his father after he learned why he was born. He starts to accept this side of himself and use it more after Midoriya tells him that the power belongs to ''him'', not his father.
* OneLiner: Since he doesn't talk much, he has lots of those short badass lines. For example:
** After Midoriya provokes him into using his fire Quirk in a battle:
-->'''Todoroki:''' Midoriya... Thanks. ''(Proceeds to blast Midoriya completely out of bounds with one attack which sends the referee Midnight flying and destroys the entire fighting ring from its impact.)''
** When he defeats and immobilizes five or more ninjas with various Quirks in an anime-only scene [[OneManArmy all by his own]]:
-->'''Todoroki:''' Sorry... I can't afford to fail.
* PrettyBoy: His facial features are a bit more slender than most of the boys and he's really good-looking. Mina even refers to him as "the preeminent pretty boy of the Class" at one point. It's even more pronounced in the manga.
* PrimaryColorChampion: Through his new blue costume adding to his red and white hair.
* PsychoactivePowers: A variation. He doesn't need to be in a specific mood to use his powers but, if he gets very angry, his powers grow increasingly destructive, including to himself.
* TheQuietOne: Not to the same extent as other characters but when he's not fighting, Todoroki is one of the quietest students. If the atmosphere is calm and casual, expect him to say very little. Even after he started to defrost and get along with everyone else, he's easily still the softest spoken member of Class 1-A aside from Koda.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: His fire powers act as this to his ice powers. If he overuses his ice abilities, his body temperature drops dangerously low, but he can balance it out with his fire powers. [[http://i.imgur.com/jIqqvyj.png However, the character notes explaining all of this don't say what happens if he were to overuse his fire powers]]. Additionally, official art and comments by his brother Natsuo suggest that he has increased resistance to low temperatures. He can endure temperatures hot enough to melt steel, but it's extremely dangerous to himself since to get that hot he can't cool himself off.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: Todoroki is almost immediately able to pinpoint that Midoriya has some form of relationship to All Might and that they share the same Quirk. [[EntertaininglyWrong Though, he mistakenly thinks Midoriya is All Might's bastard son]].
* TheRival: To Midoriya, because of his relationship with All Might. Becomes a friendly rivalry as Midoriya helps Todoroki start healing from his abusive childhood.
* RotatingProtagonist: After Midoriya and Bakugo, his relationship with his father and family formed significant parts of the story, causing him to gain regular focus and act as the {{tritagonist}} of the series during it's first act. After Endeavor succeeds All Might and becomes the new Number 1 hero however, Shoto himself shifts to this, a role he shares alongside Ochaco and Tenya, sometimes acting more as a supporting character to Izuku or Endeavor, other times taking a backseat for Ochaco and/or Tenya.
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: Invoked by Endeavor where he separated him from his siblings in childhood and gave him strict, sheltered upbringing because they "live in a different world" and would distract him from his training. As a result, Todoroki grew up to be SociallyInept, distant, [[IWorkAlone overly self-reliant]], and with lots of emotional baggage. He gets better, though.
* ScarsAreForever:
** He received that burn scar from his mother when he was a small child. It still hasn't healed.
** Even after panicking while watching Endeavor nearly being killed on TV, Todoroki takes a moment to make his dad suffer the irony that he will now always have a scar that's very similar to his, via one extremely sarcastic comment:
--->'''Todoroki:''' That's a nice scar you've got there. ''[slurps soba as loudly as possible]''
* SignatureMove: He tends to start any fight he's in by launching a huge torrent of ice to trap his opponents. [[DeconstructedTrope This tends to backfire on him when he encounters opponents who know this and have ways to counter it, which puts him on the defensive]].
* SignificantWardrobeShift: In the beginning, Todoroki wore a costume that completely covered his left side, which is where the fire Quirk he inherited from his AbusiveDad came from, in ice and even hid his scar as a way of rejecting his father. Thus, he limited himself to only using his icy right half. But after he learns to accept his fire Quirk and unleashes it in a battle, something he vowed he wouldn't do, he changes his costume to look less dull and allow access to both Quirks, unlike his old one.
* SingleTear: Sheds one single tear with a big [[NotSoStoic never-seen-before]] TearfulSmile after Midoriya's NeverGiveUpSpeech and WarriorTherapist approach with him during their match push him into finally using his fire Quirk in a battle after he was '''so''' adamant about not using it in one.
* SinsOfOurFathers: Shoto's greatest challenge in the series is facing the culmination of Endeavor's failings as a parent in Dabi. Even All For One, who isn't exactly a father of the year himself, points out how Endeavor essentially tasked his youngest son to clean up the mess he made.
* SlasherSmile: Seldom seen, but when he goes all out, he starts displaying a very disturbing one at the prospect of no longer restraining himself.
* {{Sleepyhead}}: He can fall asleep whenever, wherever. Many scenes of Class A-1, especially in the manga, have him sleeping while people around him are talking.
* SlidingScaleOfBeauty: He's considered a Level III World Class beauty, as he's noted to be handsome by multiple female characters despite having a burn scar on his face and lacking social skills. Mt. Lady even thinks "he's so cute I want him" to herself after witnessing how LiteralMinded he is.
* SoLastSeason: When he was first introduced, his Quirk was noted as exceptionally powerful even when he wasn't using his left side and was easily the most powerful student in Class 1-A. However, while his Quirk is still noted to be very strong, he has started to encounter opponents who can counter his powers, which puts him at a disadvantage because he's spent so many years relying on just the power of them alone.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: As a result of his strict upbringing, Todoroki is endearingly awkward when dealing with other people, especially his friends at times. This could also be connected to him being TheComicallySerious.
** When Yaoyorozu starts [[TearsOfJoy crying]] in front of him, his response is to ask if she's sick and tells her about a pressure point that helps deal with nausea.
** A chapter page showing him with his parents being enrolled in elementary school shows that he was socially awkward and shy since he was quite young.
* SoullessBedroom: Downplayed -- his dorm room is made completely in a traditional Japanese style with very little furniture, reflecting his icy personality. For most of his life, he's been under the thumb of his abusive father Endeavor who has been training him to become a pro-hero, so he hasn't really had the chance to express who he is yet.
-->'''Everyone seeing Todoroki's room:''' A Japanese-style room!
--> '''Kaminari:''' Was his made different?
-->''[...]''
-->'''Todoroki:''' ''(with a poker face)'' I worked hard.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His first name can be romanized as "Shoto", "Shouto", or "Shōto".
* SquishyWizard: Downplayed. Todoroki is by no means weak or unathletic, in fact he's on the upper end of his class in terms of speed and strength. He just relies on the devastating long-ranged power of his Quirk so much that he falls into the danger of overspecializing, which is why Aizawa faces off against him during his exam, so as to negate his Quirk and force him to not rely on it temporarily.
* StealthPun: One could say he started to warm up more to people once he begins to accept his fire power and use it.
* StockShonenRival: A straighter example than Bakugo, but also [[DeconstructedTrope deconstructed]]. He's a PrivilegedRival who's the son of the 2nd-Ranked hero in Japan and is pressured to follow in his father's footsteps, possesses tremendous power that Midoriya can barely match at first, and has a [[PerpetualFrowner broody]], [[IWorkAlone loner personality]] to contrast Midoriya's friendlier one. However, due to his DarkAndTroubledPast, he's under great stress and it's limiting his growth as a hero-in-training. It's only after Midoriya acts as his WarriorTherapist during their fight, Todoroki starts to work towards amending his familial issues and becoming more social. He then becomes one of Midoriya's closer friends and {{friendly rival|ry}}s in the process.
* TheStoic: When he isn't in battle or with his father. Even after he opens up to Midoriya, Ida, and Yaoyorozu, Todoroki remains calm and tends to have rather lethargic reactions to anything his classmates do.
** When most of his classmates are having some fun with the "King of Dorms" competition, all he can think about is going to sleep.
** During his remedial license training, he tries to connect with the children they're dealing with by introducing himself, only to be called boring because his flat delivery fails to reach them.
** In some serious OOCIsSeriousBusiness showing how much thought he's putting into how to handle Endeavor after his sudden change of heart despite still hating him, Shoto never shows any emotion in the family meeting his sister attempted. He even stays perfectly calm during Natsuo's rant, his only reaction is being surprised that Natsuo could ever get that emotional. Shoto even ends it by agreeing with Natsuo and giving Endeavor some legitimate indirect advice on how to apologize, then goes back to eating his noodles like nothing has happened.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: While he resembles both his parents with one side having red hair and a turquoise eye and the other half white hair and grey eye, Todoroki's facial features and hair take after his mother, Rei.
* StrongAndSkilled: Zigzagged. Midoriya notes that during their fight Todoroki's [[SuperpowerLottery incredibly potent power combination]] isn't all that makes him dangerous, there's a high degree of intelligence, control, and creative thinking to back it up. However, this is only relative to most other students and some pros, as he eventually realizes he needs to get even more creative with his powers to contend with the best villains and heroes.
* SuperiorSuccessor: Invoked, as Endeavor trained him to be as such. However, [[spoiler:he wasn't planned to be this. Originally, it was his oldest brother Toya who possessed a superior fire Quirk, but also inherited their mother's weak constitution, which eventually seemingly killed him during a training exercise with Endeavor. It was likely around this time that Endeavor switched over to Shoto]]. Endeavor reveals that this was because Shoto is not bound to the same weaknesses he has (Endeavor's Hellfire Quirk runs the risk of overheating and damaging him, something that Shoto can avert by using his ice at the same time.)
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He's very cold, distant and uncommunicative at the beginning of the series and remains usually quiet and stoic around strangers and when he's not on the battlefield. However, as he gets to know his classmates and starts appreciating their company, he gradually becomes more considerate, to the point of being called a "softie" by Recovery Girl when she noticed just how gentle he was around Yaoyorozu in the Teachers vs Students finals.
* SuperpowerLottery: Invoked by his father who wanted a child with fire and ice powers, and he's TheAce of his class. The combined powers of his fire-and-ice side were able to overpower and blow away Midoriya using One For All at 100% of its power, albeit after Midoriya had already smashed the fingers of his hands to bits over the course of the fight. This is downplayed because, while one of the strongest in his class (if not the strongest), his power isn't a story-breaking one. Furthermore, as shown over time, his Quirk is not enough to deal with larger problems, even when he uses his fire.
* TeethClenchedTeamWork: With Yoarashi at the end of the provisional license exam. Todoroki plainly points out their incompatibility and non-existent teamwork before they finally get their act together and start working alongside each other.
* TemporaryBlindness: In his case, muteness. His throat got badly burned that he couldn't talk as a result of Dabi's {{hell fire}} burning him in the Paranormal Liberation War. We only see him having {{Inner Monologue}}s afterward and occasionally uttering little ''ah'' and ''uh''s till he finally speaks to his dad, albeit hoarsely and not without a bit of coughing.
* ThousandYardStare: His expression in Chapter 290 [[spoiler:when Dabi reveals himself to be his older brother Toya]] is one of mute shock that slowly transitions into growing horror [[spoiler:as Toya gleefully reveals his revenge plan against their father.]]
* ThouShaltNotKill: He points out how deadly his power is to a villain, but refuses to kill him. Not because it's morally wrong, but because it would put a black mark on his record as a hero. It's really because he doesn't like to see people get hurt. Despite hating the man and being tormented by the memories of childhood that Endeavor forced on him and his family, Todoroki still doesn't want to see ''anyone'' be badly hurt or killed. Watching his dad be mauled by High-End on national television sends him into a FreakOut.
* TookALevelInKindness: While he wasn't much of a jerk before, just aloof and arrogant, he gets noticeably nicer after Sports Festival Arc.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He seriously ''loves'' cold soba noodles and is frequently seen eating them.
* TragicIceCharacter: He has double fire and ice powers, but makes the most use of his ice power, which he got from his mother, to spite his father, who abused them both in a bid to make Shoto into a worthy successor as a superhero.
* TrophyChild: His father, the flame-powered hero Endeavor, willingly admits that he married Shoto's mother for her ice-powers in the hopes of fathering a superior hero [[SuperiorSuccessor who could do what Endeavor could not]]: supplant All Might in his position as the No. 1 hero. Shoto and his siblings were all born as a result of Endeavor's desire for a "worthy heir", but Shoto's balance of fire and ice powers made him the unfortunate target of his father's attention.
* TroubledButCute: The general consensus of Class 1-A girls, apparently. During the "King of Dorms" mini-arc, he is referred to as the strongest, coolest, and most handsome boy of Class 1-A. At the same time, he also has a lot of family issues and was seriously antisocial until Midoriya became what is very likely his first friend.
* {{Understatement}}: Has a habit of making these with a completely straight face, overlapping with ComicallySerious:
-->'''Todoroki:''' (after freezing Sero in a stadium-sized glacier) Sorry... I was angry...\
'''Todoroki:''' (on how he re-built his dorm into a traditional Japanese home in one day) ...I worked really hard.
* TroubledFetalPosition: He dramatically falls into this position in relief when his dad makes it out alive after fighting a powerful High-End Nomu.
* UnreliableExpositor: When the story starts to shed more light on Endeavor's past, it becomes clear that Shoto's explanation to Izuku about his father forcing an ArrangedMarriage onto Rei in order to [[MaritalRapeLicense bear]] him a SuperiorSuccessor becomes very inaccurate.
* VerbalSaltInTheWound: Makes the sarcastic comment "that's a bad scar" to remind his father that he'll now have a permanent scar awfully similar to his, while [[RamenSlurp loudly slurping his soba]].
* VisualDevelopment: Following his CharacterDevelopment and DefrostingIceKing in the U.A. Sports Festival, he has lost half of his body that is covered with ice and [[SignificantWardrobeShift changed his white hero clothes for dark blue ones with a utility belt]].
* WhatTheHellHero: Surprisingly capable of calling out people:
** When Ida tells him and Midoriya to stop interfering with his fight with Stain, Todoroki disdainfully responds that the real Ingenium never had such a hateful, unheroic look on his face.
** Lashes out against the police chief for telling him, Midoriya, and Ida that they shouldn't have illegally engaged Stain in combat, demanding to know if the "right course of action" is to leave another hero and his friends to die.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Everything looks like it can be solved by hurling icebergs at it. While he's capable of using other tactics (like freezing Ida's leg mufflers during their match), he acknowledges that he needs to get more creative with his Quirk usage if he expects to fight competent villains that can handle his barrages of ice or flames.
* WhenHeSmiles: He usually has a stoic demeanor on his face, but he occasionally cracks tiny smiles.
* WillfullyWeak: For the longest time, he mostly neglected his fire capabilities out of spite toward his dad and would not push himself too hard out of caution. This bites him on the butt ''big-time'' as several characters call him out on it (his father Endeavor and Midoriya) as not using his full potential. While he has overcome this and is training, it becomes evident that he still tends to hold back and not push himself. Granted, [[spoiler:his brother died (seemingly) after using a DangerousForbiddenTechnique due to getting hotter flames than Endeavor but a weak constitution towards heat from his mother, so this is somewhat understandable]]. However, Tetsutetsu of all people calls him out on it for not pushing himself to the limit. Shoto finally begins pushing his Quirk to the limit and only manages a draw despite his power.
* WorfHadTheFlu: He ultimately throws his fight against Bakugo after mostly giving it his all, due to the HeroicBSOD he was undergoing regarding his identity and how he'll use his powers. It's still unknown who would win between the two if all conditions were ideal. This infuriates Bakugo, who didn't consider it a true victory.
* WouldntHurtAChild: Heavily implied when Bakugo suggests that they beat up the disobedient elementary kids during their extended hero license course, saying "sometimes violence is necessary." Todoroki disagrees, insisting that "there's definitely a better way of doing things" other than using violence. Considering what Todoroki went through as a child, [[JustifiedTrope it isn't hard to see why he'd think so]].
* YinYangBomb: He inherited fire powers from his father and ice powers from his mother, though he doesn't like his father much, so he spent his entire childhood using only his ice powers out of spite. However, he can only generate heat from one side of his body and cold from the other, meaning using both for more than a few seconds will create all sorts of health problems for him as his body becomes extremely unevenly heated.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: When Yaoyorozu starts having bouts of HeroicSelfDeprecation when they're paired up for the final exams, he tells her that he voted for her for ClassRepresentative because he believed in her intelligence and leadership. This raises her spirits considerably.
* YouCalledMeXItMustBeSerious: During the Joint Training arc, as he watches Itsuka Kendo trying to overwhelm Yaoyorozu with physical attacks after separating her from her team, Todoroki calls Yaoyorozu by her full name as he states that Momo is gifted enough to have anticipated Kendo's strategy, since this is what she excels in. It says a lot about Todoroki's faith in Momo's capabilities, given he has never called anybody else by their full name.
* YoungestChildWins:
** Played with. He may have won the SuperpowerLottery, but it resulted in him being subjected to TrainingFromHell by his dad in an effort to make Shoto a SuperiorSuccessor. It's later revealed that [[spoiler:Shoto's oldest brother Toya was the original choice, due to possessing superior flames to Endeavor. However, Toya also had his mother's innate weakness to fire, so when Toya tried to learn one of his father's DangerousForbiddenTechniques, it apparently ended up killing him. After Toya's death, he switched over to Shoto, whom he learned had fire and ice abilities and thus, lacked the elemental limits Endeavor and Toya suffered from.]]
** [[spoiler:Toya's later flashback further clarifies that he's the youngest child ''because'' he won the lottery. Toya internalised Endeavor's desire for a SuperiorSuccessor so much that he actively trained himself with his quirk despite the harmful side-effects for him and against his parent's wishes, wanting to prove that he wasn't a 'mistake' and could fulfil Endeavor's dream even with his handicap. Unable to dissuade him from repeatedly hurting himself, Rei and Enji decided to have more children that could eventually achieve Endeavor's dreams in Toya's stead, stopping with Shoto once he showcased the perfect combination of powers. Unfortunately, this instead caused Toya to have a mental breakdown over losing his reason for being born in the first place and develop his animosity towards his younger sibling [[FeelingOppressedByTheirOwnExistence merely for existing]], despite Shoto having done nothing to him personally]].
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame:
** When Midoriya provokes him into using his fire powers during the U.A. Sports Festival, his father Endeavor (who, while not outright villainous, is an abusive NominalHero) expresses excitement for him, telling Shoto that this is his first step in becoming the greatest hero. This greatly frustrates Todoroki, who had sworn to win by only using his ice powers. Later, he's able to use his fire powers after dissociating them from his father.
** In Chapter 167, Todoroki blows off a SoProudOfYou from Endeavor, which is hollow at best. His reaction is implied to be along the lines of this. On the other hand, it is a bit subverted since he faintly smiles at his dad's attempts at reforming.
* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry: Implied. Shoto seldom ever loses his composure but, when he does, his powers become much more dangerous and powerful than they already are and he starts to display a fearsome SlasherSmile.

!!!'''Quirk:''' {{Invisibility}}

->''"It's fine, isn't it? C'mon, let's have a go at it!"''

A bubbly and cheerful girl whose Quirk, "Invisibility", renders her entire body permanently invisible. She is usually seen as a set of seemingly floating clothes -- or in the case of her hero costume, just a pair of floating gloves and shoes. Because of this, she often jokes about her condition and is able to get away with states of undress no visible human could dream of trying in public.
----
* AnimeHair: When her full design is shown visible and in-color on the cover of Chapter 368, Toru is shown to have a [[MessyHair rather shaggy]], [[Manga/{{Berserk}} Post-Eclipse Casca-esque]] hairdo, being a messy mop of light green with pink tips. Appropriate, since styling invisible hair would not only be difficult, but also pointless since no one would be able to see her hair anyway.
* AgonyOfTheFeet: Is defeated in a single move by Todoroki in the Battle Trial due to him freezing the surfaces of the building, sticking her bare feet to the floor.
* AllThereInTheManual: Her first full-bodied visible appearance was in a promotional image posted to Twitter.
* AttackReflector: After some training, she learned to use her light manipulation abilities to reflect light-based attacks, such as Aoyama's [[EnergyWeapon Navel Laser]]. [[spoiler:This is what allows her to save Izuku from Aoyama's laser in chapter 337]].
* BattleStrip: She can make the best use of her Quirk as an InvisibleStreaker. It's one of the ways that [[InvisibilityWithDrawbacks her invisibility is shown to have weaknesses]], since [[AgonyOfTheFeet her bare feet could be a prime target]], and [[ExposedToTheElements sufficiently low temperatures can outright remove her from the equation]].
* BerserkerTears: [[spoiler:When her face is finally shown in Chapter 337, she's crying in rage, because she had to use her power to deflect Aoyama's navel laser.]]
* BigOlEyebrows: Subverted, but she is revealed to have eyelashes in the same style as Tetsutetsu's bushy and spikey eyebrows.
* BlindedByTheLight: Able to refract light inside of her and intensify it, making her capable of blinding people. This hints at a general [[LightEmUp light manipulation]] ability, with her {{invisibility}} being one of its effects. Also doubles as a VisualPun since she does it in costume: she's ''flashing'' her opponents.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has an ample chest, which given she's invisible, is one of the only physical features that can be noted about her, via the outline of her clothing. This often gets noticed by her more perverted classmates and there are several MaleGaze shots aimed at her chest.
* ChildLikeVoice: In Japanese, her voice is just as high and endearing as Uraraka's and Ashido's.
* CombinationAttack: Aoyama uses his super move Navel Saber, with Hagakure using her Quirk to curve the blade. It's first seen to slash through Villain Bots during training, and was developed during their work-study under Yoroi Musha.
* TheCutie: Her bubbly, cheerful, energetic personality, combined with [[GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals her love of stuffed animals]] and child-like room makes her completely adorable.
* ExposedToTheElements: Her winter costume is unchanged from her normal one, meaning she's still mostly naked. This is lampshaded by Jiro, who asks if she's cold. Also, when Toru confronts Todoroki, his ice power makes it impossible to walk, because her bare feet would freeze to the ice.
* TheFaceless: For the most part, which is expected, as Hagakure is invisible all the time. One chapter of ''My Heroine Academia'' has the other girls desperately try to find a way to see what her face looks like. According to Hagakure herself, she looks like [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yang_Guifei Yang Guifei]] and [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Xavier Francis Xavier]] mashed together. This just leaves her classmates confounded even more. [[spoiler:When her face is finally partially revealed in Chapter 337 (and then fully in color on the cover of Chapter 368), she is indeed cute and looks nothing like what she described to her classmates]].
* FlatCharacter: Out of the classmates and girls in particular, mostly her traits are being [[GenkiGirl cheery and bubbly]] or PluckyComicRelief with how she can't be seen.
* FloatingLimbs: Played with; she actually does have a normal body with limbs, but due to her invisibility, her hero costume does give the impression she's just a pair of floating gloves and boots.
* FullFrontalAssault: Considering that her hero costume is just a pair of gloves and shoes, she's usually fighting in the nude as an InvisibleStreaker. Not that it bothers Toru very much, since no one can see her anyways.
* GenderBlenderName: "Toru" is usually a male name. Horikoshi originally conceived the character as a boy, but thought it would be cooler/funnier if they were a girl instead.
* GenkiGirl: She seems very lively for an invisible person. When some of Class 1-A was tricked into being cheerleaders during the manga's TournamentArc, Toru was enthusiastically cheering and waving her pom-poms in spite of knowing it was a trick.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: She has several in her room, including one that looks like Nezu.
* TheGlovesComeOff: When Hagakure wants to get serious with her use of invisibility, she takes off the gloves and shoes as part of her very sparse costume, rendering her fully invisible.
* HandSignals: Due to her constant invisibility, a lot of her characterization comes from all the BodyLanguage she expresses via hand gestures or signals.
* HiddenBuxom: Only "hidden" since she's invisible. The school uniforms are {{Clark Kent Outfit}}s and her hero costume renders her fully invisible, so whenever she's in casual clothing it becomes apparent that has large breasts. She also gets a very noticeable bounce in the anime when she shows off her room wearing a casual T-shirt.
* InconsistentSpelling: Her first name can be spelled "Tōru", "Tooru", or "Tohru".
* InformedAttribute: Surprisingly, Hakagure's official intelligence stat is 4/5, but she didn't have an opportunity to showcase it. Doesn't help her stat is bigger than many of her classmates and that at the first written tests she scored at 16th place, much lower than f.e. Jiro who has 3/5 intelligence stat and has 7th place.
* InvisibilityWithDrawbacks: Her Quirk in a nutshell is 24-hour invisibility. Both of her parents have invisibility Quirks too. Her clothes don't turn invisible with her, so she has to go naked in order to be totally invisible and is thus ExposedToTheElements. Also, she [[PowerIncontinence can't turn her Quirk off]], so she's invisible all the time.
* InvisibleStreaker: Her Quirk doesn't affect her clothing, so she needs to constantly strip off her clothes in order for it to be useful.
* {{Irony}}: Most heroes are defined by a costume, while she's defined for almost having a total ''lack'' of one.
* LightEmUp: It was hinted at before with her BlindedByTheLight move, but following her winter internship, she has fully gained the power to manipulate light refractions.
* LogicalWeakness: Toru is completely invisible with no way for an enemy to remove it, but [[InvisibilityWithDrawbacks there are ways to circumvent not being able to see her]].
** [[InvisibleStreaker Toru's Quirk is at its most useful when she's totally naked]], which means she gets ExposedToTheElements. When she confronts Todoroki, his ice power made it impossible for Toru to walk without freezing her bare feet to the floor, which rendered her presence moot.
** If Toru makes any discernible noise, and someone can hear it or sense it, [[SeeTheInvisible they can find Toru even if they can't see her with the naked eye]].
** While her power can't be removed, [[PowerIncontinence that means it can't be removed even if she wants it to be]]. She's invisible all the time with no way to stop using it, although Toru usually gets around it by wearing clothing that shows her body's outline.
* MeaningfulName: "Toru" means "transparent", which is fitting since she's made transparent by her permanent invisibility. "Hagakure" means "hidden in leaves" when written as one word.
* MessyHair: When her [[spoiler: true appearance is revealed, she is shown to have light green and ''very messy'' hair that gives Aizawa and Midoriya a run for their money. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] since she's invisible the majority of the time, she likely doesn't have much reason to style it.]]
* MsFanservice: PlayedForLaughs, given she's invisible all the time, although the fact she's often in a state of undress is still used for titillation as well as humor. She also has a fairly [[BuxomBeautyStandard buxom and curvaceous figure]] which has to be outlined either via her clothing or her body shape in a pool of water.
* NakedPeopleAreFunny: The whole "she's naked but you can't see it in the first place" aspect of her character is played for all the comedy it can give, like her volume profile being described as "tasteful nude." [[DontExplainTheJoke It shows nothing at all, because she's invisible]].
* NiceGirl: Hagakure is a bubbly, cheery, and easygoing girl that does most things with an upbeat attitude.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Gives a hilarious one to Manga Fukidashi in the Joint Training arc.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Given her normally bubbly and happy-go-lucky attitude, it's really disturbing to see her break down in anger [[spoiler:when she finds out Aoyama is a traitor]].
* OutOfFocus: She's one of the least focused on characters in Class 1-A, which is partially because she's invisible, but her character hasn't been explored like many of her classmates. Chapters 335-336 reveal that this is because [[spoiler:Horikoshi was using her as a RedHerring for TheReveal of the true traitor within class 1-A]].
* PinkMeansFeminine: Her dorm room is covered in cute things and has pink curtains, carpet, chairs, tables, and bedspread.
* PluckyComicRelief: Given her status as OutOfFocus compared to the rest of her class, she mostly exists to provide light-hearted humor.
* PowerIncontinence: If she ''could'' turn visible, she would've by now, but she can't. She's also never shown any concern about being stuck invisible or it having any impact on her life. [[spoiler:It's ambiguous if this is because great emotional distress can cause her to become visible for a short moment, as shown by her reaction to Aoyama's treachery, if manipulating such a massive source of light as his navel laser briefly outlined her features, or if the panel showing her face was purely for the sake of the readers seeing her expression. Chapter 400 has her Quirk glitch out after reflecting Aoyama's Navel Laser much more than usual, causing her to turn visible much to her horror.]]
* PowerStereotypeFlip: Despite being literally invisible, she is not shy or introverted at all. In fact, one could argue she's so outgoing and unabashed ''because of'' being literally invisible.
* RedHerring: [[spoiler:The final page of chapter 335 sets her up as the U.A. traitor, by way of an AnswerCut to her when All For One talks about how he has "friends" he can use. There are also some hints that seem to support this, as Hagakure was unconscious during Bakugo's rescue attempt, and couldn't have warned All For One. In reality, Aoyama is the traitor, and Hagakure just overheard Aoyama talking with his parents about his role as a spy.]]
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:Her face is shown in Chapter 337 when it's discovered that Aoyama was actually TheMole, with Toru crying BerserkerTears from feeling enraged at Aoyama's betrayal.]]
* RunningGag: People blushing at just the implication that she is totally naked most of the time. The group of students she teams up with during the U.A. Sports Festival Arc provides a good example of this.
* SatelliteCharacter: Out of all the girls in the class, virtually nothing is known about Hagakure's background and her screen/panel time is just as scarce as Sato.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Often plays the Energetic Girl to Ojiro's Savvy Guy.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: The only girl in the class who doesn't mind wearing a cheerleader outfit, even after it turned out to be just a prank by Mineta and Kaminari, plus she has no problem walking around naked half the time. Of course, she's invisible, so it doesn't really matter. Amusingly, she does get embarrassed when seen "undressing" and asks [[NoPeekingRequest people to look away as she does it]], despite it only being her taking off her gloves.
* ShoutOut: Has the same alias ("Invisible Girl") and powers (invisibility) as early [[ComicBook/FantasticFour Susan Storm]].
* SleepsInTheNude: During the School Trip Arc, when we see her sleeping, only her mass on the bed is invisible, meaning she sleeps with no clothes on.
* StealthExpert: Her invisibility Quirk makes her very good at sneaking around. Even if [[InvisibilityWithDrawbacks it's shown that there are ways around her invisibility]], someone who can't see Toru may not know she's even there, so her primary skills are in espionage and stealth. This is lampshaded during her final exam in the anime:
-->'''Yaoyorozu:''' As expected, Hagakure is a cut above when it comes to covert activities!
* TalkingWithSigns: In the ''Two Heroes'' movie, she plays rock paper scissors with three signs depicting each move. She loses.
* TookALevelInBadass: Was something of a JokeCharacter due to the limitations of her {{Invisibility}} Quirk, but then she learns how to start to manipulate light, and under the mentorship of Yoroi Musha refined her light manipulation for both offensive and defensive uses.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Caramels are her favorite type of food.
* TheUnreveal: The first chapter of ''My Heroine Academia'' is about the girls wanting to know what Hagakure's face looks like. They try and fail with various schemes before just outright asking her, but her explanation is so contrasting that it doesn't help at all.
* VSign: A favorite of hers. Only visible in her costume though, because it has gloves, which means she is likely to use it after triumphing at something.
* WasItAllALie: [[spoiler:She's on the giving end towards Aoyama when she finds out he was the one feeding All For One information, asking if his friendship and camaraderie with the rest of Class 1-A was all fake.]]
* WeakButSkilled: Her ability is great for stealth, but not that good for combat. [[FullFrontalAssault Her needing to discard clothing to make full use of her powers]] also means she has little to no defenses and is pretty vulnerable to getting attacked, not to mention being ExposedToTheElements constantly. Shoto beats her simply by turning the interior of a building sub-zero, sticking her exposed soles to the ground and warning her that she could tear the skin off her feet if she moves. Nonetheless, she seems capable to hold herself in a fight, as shown in the Hero License Exam and how she was able to pass the U.A. Entrance Exam.

->''"I was wrong. Ever since coming here... and practically dying... I finally get it! Being a hero doesn't make you cool... they're heroes because they're cool!"''

A short and incredibly lewd boy whose Quirk, "Pop Off", allows him to produce highly adhesive balls from his head which can be used for a variety of situations, although pulling too many will rip off his scalp and cause bleeding. Despite getting into U.A., he doesn't feel like he'll be able to become a hero due to his odd Quirk.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: His perverted attitude in general doesn't win him the hearts of those he comes onto, with Momo Yaoyarozu being the primary target of his lust.
* AcquiredSituationalNarcissism: Due to being a ButtMonkey, on the rare occasions that Mineta ''does'' achieve anything, he'll suddenly develop an overinflated ego.
* AlliterativeName: '''Min'''oru '''Min'''eta.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: His costume looks ridiculous, and his quirk is usually regarded as dumb (even Mineta thinks so) but if done well, he can be a rough obstacle, as shown at first in USJ arc.
* BizarreHumanBiology: His hair consists of adhesive balls that he can rip off and regrow very quickly.
* BlessedWithSuck: How he views his own Quirk.
* BoringButPractical: What his Quirk really falls under into. Case in point, he still managed to pass the entrance exam by trapping the robots with his balls, immobilizing them, which still counted as points. It's not flashy by any means, but they're definitely useful as traps. Too bad he's still too much of a CowardlyLion to realize his potential.
* BrilliantButLazy: His stats list him as one of the smartest kids in the class (5/5, second only to Yaoyorozu), but he got ninth place in their midterm scores, and was [[AcquiredSituationalNarcissism strangely proud]] to ''barely'' be in the top half. His idea of training for the sports festival is to hold a trophy and practice his acceptance speech.
* ButtMonkey: Of Class 1-A. Most of it is his own fault, as his perversion is [[LaserGuidedKarma repeatedly rebuffed and punished]]. Tsuyu tends to be the one who inflicts justice on him the most (Aizawa comes in second).
* CasanovaWannabe: He ''fiends'' for anything with a remotely sexy figure, though as a result he doesn't have any female friends, besides perhaps Tsuyu who seems to stick around him to try and stop his lecherous tendencies.
* CharacterDevelopment:
** During his final exam, he ends up winning against Midnight by himself when he realizes that heroes aren't cool because they're heroes, but it's the other way around, making him decide that he wants to be cooler as a hero.
** Over time, he has become more courageous and less hesitant to jump into hero duty, as well as more focused. In the first movie, he balks when the group asks him to climb up the tower and only relents when Kaminari promises him a harem if he does so; in the second movie, he joins the rest of Class 1-A in their fight against Nine without hesitating. In the Season 5 opener, he only has one small perverted moment and otherwise does a great job at keeping the bridge from falling apart and saving Mirio during the emergency drill. A few episodes later he saves Ashido from Class 1-B students, causing her to become genuinely grateful. Of course, he then intentionally bounces right into her breasts but progress is progress.
** Mineta is also slowly [[DownplayedTrope (but still incredibly slowly)]], acting less perverted. While he used to actively seek out opportunities to peek and pry at his classmates, he's only ever taking advantage of a situation if an opportunity presents itself. It's not much but it's an improvement. The girls of Class-A are also noticeably more comfortable around him, implying he might be doing better.
** He used to be a total pervert to hot women, even Midnight, but by the Paranormal Liberation War, he shows actual concern for her, [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness even asking Mina if Midnight will be alright]]. [[spoiler:Turns out his fears were genuine as Midnight is one of the many heroes who don't make it.]]
** [[spoiler:He has become much braver by the final arc. Earlier he used to wet himself at the mere thought of facing off against real villains, but once Midoriya dropped out of UA, he volunteered along with the rest of the class 1-A to bring him back, knowing full well that he is being directly targeted by [[TheDreaded Shigaraki and All For One]] and the hero society has more or less collapsed.]]
* ChildLikeVoice: A TinySchoolboy can only have a notably childish voice, and both his Japanese and English voice actresses drove that trope home. His Japanese VA gave him a high-pitched voice, while his English VA went more with a husky "young boy voiced by an adult woman" cartoon voice.
* ChivalrousPervert: As perverted as he may be, Mineta always tries his ''absolute'' best to give it his all whenever the going gets tough.
* ClassicalAntiHero: Thanks to his general unpopularity, cowardliness, perverted antics and unimpressive Quirk, he is a textbook, if not exaggerated example.
* CombinationAttack: With Ashido, they can use the combo move Grape-Pinky Combo Mineta-Bounce. Mineta lays Pop Off spheres on the ground and walls, with Ashido then throwing Mineta so he keeps bouncing from the spheres and throws more of them onto the enemy. They first use it in the Joint Training Battle against Class 1-B.
* CowardlyLion: He's the first to run away from battle, but push him into a corner and he'll give everything he's got to beat you.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: [[spoiler:He throws a Pop-off ball at, and then mocks, ''All for One'', while gravely injured, telling him that stealing Tsukuyomi's Quirk would make him even more of a "[[{{Chuunibyou}} cringey edge lord]]", and daring the BigBad to steal his Quirk since it'd give him a sick hairstyle.]]
* DemotedToExtra: Despite being playable in the first game of the franchise, Mineta is not present among the playable cast of ''VideoGame/MyHeroOnesJustice'', but he is still present as a VirtualPaperDoll, and characters can have him glued to their back as he did with Yaoyorozu in the U.A. Sports Festival. He is finally added to the playable roster in the sequel.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: The lower half of his hero costume is meant to resemble a bowl, though it unfortunately looks like a reinforced diaper.
* DreadfulMusician: He's a terrible singer, as seen when he tries out for Class 1-A's band for the school festival.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** While his are very low and he constantly attempts to peep on his female classmates, he does draw a line at attempting to grope them. The one time he did could be explained away as being waterlogged and then just not noticing since he was so happy when he heard the villains were leaving during the USJ Arc. His "target" Tsuyu may have retaliated at both examples but holds no ill will which might indicate that they were accidents.
** While he is not above aggravating his classmates and has a relatively one-note methodology, even he finds [[GreenEyedMonster Monoma]] endlessly annoying.
** After hearing about the discrimination Shoji suffered as a child, he is outright horrified and extremely apologetic when he realizes that a seemingly innocuous comment he'd made in the past could have been triggering for the latter.
* EyeScream:
** While in the boys' locker room, he tries to get an eyeful of the girls changing next door through a peephole and [[EyePoke swiftly gets stabbed in the eye by one of Jiro's earphone jacks]].
** Later, as punishment for bouncing into her breasts during a training exercise, Mina uses the [[TheLudovicoTechnique Ludovico Technique]] on him.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Outside of [[HairTriggerTemper Bakugo]], Mineta is probably the Class 1-A student that gets this the most, mostly due to his perverted personality. He is still good friends with Midoriya and the other perverts, Kaminari and Sero at least.
** Appears to be a zig-zagged trope however, since rest of students still accept or tolerate him as fellow classmate, and praise him when he does something well.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Throwing sticky balls may seem underwhelming as a superpower, and Mineta himself expresses doubt about its usefulness in combat, but thanks to Midoriya, he realizes that it's very useful for immobilizing enemies. By throwing a large amount of them into the water at USJ, followed by a Smash from Midoriya, a large group of villains ends up stuck together and helpless. Later on, during the final exam, he uses them to trap Midnight and successfully escape from the training grounds with Sero. Finally, his sticky balls adhere to everything except for him. Instead, they repel him with great force, allowing him to use his sticky balls as trampolines, greatly improving his movement.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: His NominalHero status is entirely PlayedForLaughs. He's a hero, but he only cares about [[EatingTheEyeCandy leering at girls]] and is overall smug and self-serving, never really caring about his classmates' feelings or how his actions may affect them. He's happy to throw them under the bus if it helps him, as evidenced by his "performance" in the U.A. Sports Festival. Were he not played for comedy this would be unsettling.
* HeroicRROD: He can't keep pulling his sticky balls out for too long or they'll start to make his skin bleed.
* HiddenDepths:
** Believe it or not, Mineta's intelligence is 5/5 (behind only Yaoyorozu) and ranks 9th in his class in terms of grades.
** He also has a high Cooperativeness stat, at 4/5. Despite being a nuisance to his classmates most of the time due to his sleaziness, he actually makes a good partner when he's working alongside someone. He helped Midoriya and Tsuyu trap the villains at USJ, came up with a practical and legal "tank" strategy in the sports festival that made his team practically invincible, used Sero's tape as a mask to protect himself from Midnight's KnockoutGas before dragging him out of the arena to safety, worked with the rest of 1-A in taking down the other schools during the provisional hero license exam, and devised a combo-move in tandem with Ashido during the joint training exercise. This all adds up to the idea that despite not thinking much of his own Quirk, as well as his cowardly nature, he's more capable than he believes he is.
** He seems to be able to make precise calculations on the fly, as demonstrated in the joint training exercise: He's able to lay out his balls in a pattern that easily allows him to bounce between them, temporarily trapping Class 1-B's team.
** While he is a HormoneAddledTeenager and is occasionally jealous of his [[ChickMagnet hotter classmates]], he genuinely cares about the ones he truly sees as friends, shedding TearsOfJoy when Bakugo recovers after fighting [[BigBad Shigaraki]] in the Paranormal Liberation War and [[spoiler:volunteering to bring Midoriya back to UA after he dropped out to keep the others safe and openly telling him how much he means to him, with or without a quirk]].
* HormoneAddledTeenager: Mineta is nothing ''but'' a bag of raging sexual hormones craving for satisfaction. He's rarely afraid to admit it:
-->'''Tsuyu:''' Mineta, are you thinking of something perverted right now?\
'''Mineta:''' [[OhCrap ...Possibly?]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: Despite being openly perverted, he has no qualms about criticizing others for perceived sexual behavior, even when they're misunderstandings.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: Overall, this is the goal he is pursuing as a hero (that and feeling up a woman, and as his final exam reveals, the former is almost entirely in service of the latter).
* InformedAttribute: Mineta's official intelligence stat is 5/5. However, he hasn't showcased to be sufficiently smart to justify it. While he isn't stupid and has some BrilliantButLazy moments, he has been mentally outdone by people with lower intelligence stats than him, which include ranking 9th in the midterm (below five people with 4/5 and two with 3/5). He does score high marks in the written tests.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Mineta may be a huge sleaze but he does demonstrate loyalty to his classmates. To complete the final exams, all he has to do is pass through the escape gate after incapacitating Midnight, but he took the time to drag his unconscious partner Sero with him. He truly does care for rest of students and especially Midoriya as well, quickly dismissing the news of him being a mass murderer in the third movie and [[spoiler:is the most desperate to comfort him when he returns to U.A. and breaks down into tears. He is also quite nice to Shoji, especially after learning of his DarkAndTroubledPast. Earlier he openly shed TearsOfJoy when [[TheFriendNobodyLikes Bakugo]] woke up in the hospital after the Paranormal Liberation War.]]
* LethalJokeCharacter: His small stature, weak frame, ridiculous power set, and constant whining might make it seem like Mineta's just a useless comic relief character, but many opponents who have underestimated him have found themselves utterly defeated by his clever application of powers, and his surprising craftiness and tenacity when pushed into action. Hell, the fact that he has survived several dangerous situations against overwhelming odds and come out on top is an indicator that he's not as useless as he might initially seem.
* TheLoad: Literally during the U.A. Sports Festival. He glues himself to Yaoyorozu's back and makes her carry him until they reach the finish line, putting him in 18th place behind her.
* LovableSexManiac: He's a massive, open pervert who admits out loud that his biggest regret was not touching Yaoyorozu's boobs and gropes Tsuyu during a hug. Even his plan to get through the Obstacle Race event involves using his sticky balls to cling to Yaoyorozu's back, earning him a severe beating, but allowing him to place in the top 42. All of this is PlayedForLaughs, so he comes across as a mostly harmless annoyance rather than a really dangerous degenerate. The "lovable" part is far more debatable since barely anyone shows a particular liking towards him, both in-universe and meta.
* TheLudovicoTechnique: [[PlayedForLaughs In a humorous scene]], Mina straps him into a straitjacket and forces his eyes open with metal tools in front of a TV screen to correct his perverted behavior.
* MadeOfIron: Gets a lot of punishment done to him (mainly comical but was once hit full on by a giant 0-pointer robot) and wasn't any worse for wear. Shows again during the Provisional License Arc, where he threw so many of his balls that he was barely able to walk over and eliminate at least one other student. His Quirk doesn't have anything to do with stamina.
* MeaningfulAppearance: His mohawk is [[HairColorDissonance mostly purple]], going with his grape theme.
* MeaningfulName: Minoru means "producing fruit" like his talent and the first part of his surname [[BilingualBonus sounds a lot like the English term "mini"]] matching his size. His surname also happens to be a [[BilingualBonus Polish word for cunnilingus]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: A small example -- after learning Shoji's backstory, Mineta is horrified upon remembering that he compared him to an octopus when they first met and tearfully apologizes. Downplayed as Shoji, for his part, doesn't mind the comparison.
* Mystical108: Minoru stands at measly 108 centimeters tall and is by far the most perverted person in the series.
* MySuitIsAlsoSuper: The gloves of his hero costume were made with samples of his skin cells so they wouldn't get stuck to his sticky balls.
* NeverMyFault: Throughout the series, whenever things don't go his way, he'll often resort to blaming others or acting like he's innocent. After failing in the Sports Festival, Mineta blames his teammates. When Ashido rightly gets angry at him for pushing into her breasts during the Joint Training, he claims it was an accident when he knew the impact of Mines's attack would do so.
* NoIndoorVoice: He tends to speak his perverted ideas ''out loud''. This trait quickly becomes a HoistByHisOwnPetard, as he'll announce a lecherous plan to peek on or sexually harass girls, with the intended targets standing right there to hear it.
* NominalHero: Mineta's mostly driven by his desire to be seen as cool and get girls, rather than the more altruistic motives that some of his other classmates have.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Mineta has a more cartoony design than most of his classmates, almost to the point of resembling a character from ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy''. He's also the only male student in Class 1-A who does not have a HeroicBuild. [[BreakingTheFourthWall He even specifically gripes about his character design]] when preparing for the School Festival as his short stature prevents him from properly holding a guitar.
* OddFriendship: Early on at least, Mineta seems to show a strong admiration for Shoji and the two team up during the Sports Festival. Shoji also keeps Mineta from getting swept away by a blast of wind in the same arc. He's also seen carried on Shoji's back.
* OlderThanTheyLook: He looks like a small child despite being the same age as his classmates (15).
* ThePeepingTom: He tries to use a peephole to peek in the girls' locker room, and gets [[EyeScream one of Jiro's earphone jacks in his eye]] for his troubles. He attempts it again [[OutdoorBathPeeping in the baths]] during the class trip, with similarly limited success.
* PersonalityPowers: His Quirk can be considered a big accidental innuendo. Thus, it's not surprising that he is a gigantic pervert.
* PervertedDrooling: His very own {{Character Tic|s}} along with his typical depraved expressions whenever he hears or sees anything even remotely sexual.
* PluckyComicRelief: Literally, as his Quirk actually involves plucking.
* RequiredSecondaryPower: Mineta doesn't stick to his own sticky balls and can, in fact, repel off of them with great speed. Otherwise he'd never be able to use them after pulling them off his scalp.
* SkewedPriorities: During the practical exam, when his partner Sero is KO'd by Midnight's KnockoutGas, all Mineta can think about is how jealous he is that Sero's head is in Midnight's lap. To his credit, he does eventually pull himself together and figure out a strategy to pass the exam.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Between his lewdness and overall cowardice, it's surprising to know he's at least ranked in the top half of his class in grades, and the databook actually gives him an A in intelligence, ahead of the likes of [[NerdActionHero Midoriya]], [[GeniusBruiser Bakugo]], and [[ClassRepresentative Ida]] and behind only [[TheAce Yaoyorozu]]. Kaminari and Ashido are positively mortified when they find out.
* SpeechImpediment: He has a noticeable lisp in the dub.
* StickySituation: His Quirk is pulling sticky balls off of himself and sticking it to objects. As long as he's still healthy, they'll stay on for a whole day.
* TakeMeInstead: [[spoiler:After All For One manages to knock Tokoyami unconscious and is about to steal Dark Shadow like how he did with Hawks' Fierce Wings, Mineta throws a sticky grape at All For One, pleading for him to not steal essentially Tokoyami's lifelong sibling and offers his own Pop-Off Quirk instead. Although this doesn't convince All For One, this does distract him enough to realise he's just wasting time and leaves without taking Dark Shadow or Pop-Off.]]
* TinySchoolboy: Standing at just 108 cm (3'6''), he is shorter than MiniatureSeniorCitizens Gran Torino (128 cm) and Recovery Girl (115 cm), and even 6-year-old Eri (110 cm).
* UnscrupulousHero: He does want to be a hero, but his reasons are largely selfish, as he just wants girls to like him and be popular. He does this by lecherously watching the girls undress or watching them bathing.
* VocalDissonance: In the English dub, his voice sounds perfectly normal for a teenage boy even though he looks like a small child.
* WallCrawl: He can swiftly scale a wall using his sticky balls as handholds, and did so once to get to the other side of a hot spring where his female classmates were having some private time.
* WithCatlikeTread: Upon discovering a peephole to the girls' locker room, he discusses peeping on his female classmates. Very loudly. He gets one of Jiro's earphone jacks in his eye very quickly.

Class 1-A's vice president. Smart, and studious but also kind and gentle, Momo hails from an extremely wealthy family and was enrolled through recommendations like Todoroki. Her Quirk, "Creation", allows her to create any inorganic object out of her body, as long as she knows its atomic composition. Despite her versatile Quirk and considerable intelligence, she struggles with low self-esteem due to the high expectations put upon her.
----
* TheAce: Momo is one of four students recommended to enroll in U.A., the others being Todoroki, Tokage, and Honenuki. She comes from a patrician family and is pretty, intelligent and well-versed in combat. She is the vice president of Class 1-A and also received the highest grades in the mid-term exams as well as in the Provisional Hero License Exam.
* AdaptationExpansion: Her fight with Tokoyami at the U.A. Sports Festival was just a single panel in the manga, and was part of Midoriya explaining the fights. It wouldn't be until much later that we see how much her loss affected her mental state. The anime, on the other hand, shows the fight in earnest while also focusing on how overwhelmed and nervous Yaoyorozu was during it. In Season 3, how she passed the first stage of the Provisional Hero License Exam is shown, whereas in the manga, she and her group just met up with Todoroki after he passed.
* AffectionateNickname: A few of her classmates nickname her "Yaomomo", as a portmanteau of her family and given names. In the English translation of the manga, it's flipped around to western order as "Momo Yao".
* AllEncompassingMantle: Her winter costume features a long dark cloak on top of her normal one, presumably to prevent ExposedToTheElements.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: When comparing herself to Todoroki, she considers him this. The Final Exams Arc reveals that this is mutual, although both recognize that Todoroki is the more powerful one, he thinks that she is a far better leader and strategist than him.
* AnimalMotifs: Cranes, specifically the Red-crowned Crane. Yaomomo's hair greatly resembles the tail of said animal and cranes are symbols of good fortune and wisdom in Japan. Yaomomo is the wealthiest student in Class 1-A, but uses her resources to help others and never intentionally flaunts her wealth maliciously. She is also very wise and intelligent as she often has to keep her classmates from making rash and impulsive decisions.
* AnimeHair: Her Hero hairstyle is a very tricked-out ponytail that resembles a crest. When she lets her hair down, however, it looks completely realistic.
* BadassAdorable: The most fearsome female student of Class 1-A is also a kind and beautiful ray of sunshine, whose bright and enthusiastic smile when wanting to help people infectiously warms the hearts of everyone around her.
* BadassBookworm: Has the highest grades in the class, as well as rivaling Midoriya in assessing and analyzing battles. She also carries an ''actual'' book with her as part of her hero regalia. It's a dictionary (The Yaoyopedia) with a comprehensive description of all raw materials that might come in handy in the field because she needs a strong mental grasp of how to replicate these materials for them to work properly.
* BareMidriffsAreFeminine: This is largely justified due to know Yaoyorozu's Quirk works. Any object she generates comes directly from her body, meaning she needs a large enough area of bare skin to pull the object out of. She can (and does) generate smaller items out of her hands or side but large objects have to be created out of areas like the midriff or back and generally having much skin exposed as possible is an advantage. As a result unlike many other costumes hers leaves much larger percentage of her skin bare. She also unzipped her tracksuit during U.A. Sport Festival to reveal a sports bra that lets her access her midriff.
* {{BFG}}: Her go-to attack is usually to create a cannon, early on she used 19th-century naval guns, and by the Paranormal Liberation Arc she seems to have moved on to modern artillery pieces
* BigEater: Her classmates are shocked to see their {{Ojou}} vice president devouring food at training camp. As she explains, however, this is justified since her powers are CastFromCalories. She eats a lot in order to have a large store of matter to draw from when she creates objects.
* BigFancyHouse: Her first reaction when she invites some students over to her house to study is that she'll have to ask her mother to open up the hall. When her classmates do arrive at her house, they're stunned as the front gate of her estate runs the entire street:
-->'''Ashido:''' I knew she was rich, but I didn't know she was ''that'' rich!
* BookSmart: She has the best grades in Class 1-A by a long shot, to the point that a quarter of her class comes to her for tutoring. This also ties into her usage of her [[ThePowerOfCreation Quirk]], which requires her to [[DifficultButAwesome understand and memorize the exact formula of whatever object she's creating]]. However, her abilities as TheStrategist are rivaled or surpassed by her classmates, Midoriya and Bakugo, whose grades are fourth and third in the class respectively.
* BrokenAce: Thanks to losing to Tokoyami before she could fight back in the U.A. Sports Festival, not being able to assert her ideas during the cavalry battle and exams, and to add insult to injury, finding out that the pro heroine who handpicked her for an internship pretty much only did so because of her looks, her confidence takes a ''nosedive''. She recovers it after figuring out a way to beat Aizawa.
* BrutalHonesty: Points out all the flaws in the first Heroes vs. Villains match and how it could've gone if the teams used their powers more effectively, and only praises Ida, the only one who did his part well. Freaked out by her lack of tact and the effect it has on the class of causing a ''very'' awkward silence to ensue, All Might silently thinks to himself that she was being a little ''too'' honest. Later in the story, this seems to be the case of EarlyInstallmentWeirdness, with that trait taken by Tsuyu.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has a well-endowed figure, which is emphasized by the NavelDeepNeckline on her hero outfit and a few gratuitous MaleGaze shots on her chest. Mineta and Kaminari are shown to be attracted to her bust multiple times.
* CastFromCalories: Lipids, technically, but the effect is pretty much the same. Her Quirk uses them as raw materials, and being a BigEater is the easiest way she can replenish them. She can tire herself out if she uses too much of them.
* ClassPrincess: She's beautiful, kind, and at the top of the class with her outstanding grades. She also comes from a wealthy family as well with some of the students calling Momo by her AffectionateNickname.
* CharacterTics: Occasionally covers her chest with her arm while in her hero costume or clenches her fist.
* ChildProdigy: She was able to use her Quirk as a child, meaning she could understand and memorize the molecular makeup of the different objects she created, starting with Russian matryoshka dolls.
* ClassRepresentative: The vice president of Class 1-A, below Ida, and a polished and straight-laced young lady. As she lampshades in the second OVA, her job is [[WackyHomeroom much harder than it should be]].
* ClothingDamage: Creating especially large objects can require more exposed skin than her hero costume has, which means the costume gets shredded. She can simply make a replacement costume with her quirk, however, so this isn't a major obstacle for her.
* CrazyPrepared: She learned how to create any and everything that might come in handy in her job as a heroine, which included flashbangs, tracking devices, several different types of melee weapons, gas masks, and anti-electricity capes.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Gets her time to shine during Final Exams arc.
* DependingOnTheWriter: Yaoyorozu's characterization in the manga and the ''Smash!!'' comics is notably different in a few aspects. In the manga, her self-esteem issues are based on a variety of reasons and is expressed as a generalized feeling of anxiety, but in the ''Smash!!'' comics, she is particularly ashamed and afraid of being a CuteClumsyGirl and has focused on correcting the "clumsy" aspect of her personality.
* DifficultButAwesome: Her Creation Quirk is very useful and versatile, but she needs to actually know the chemical composition of the things she's creating in order to make them, ''and'' she needs to actually know how to use the weapons she creates. Fortunately, she's very intelligent (with the highest grades in the class) and carries an encyclopedia-like book around with her should she need to look up materials.
* DistaffCounterpart: She is the Ida among the girls: always quick to encourage proper behavior, but gets carried away with it all too often. Fittingly, she skirts closer to TeamMom, as she tends to be more nurturing and inclusive. Both also come from wealthy backgrounds, but neither choose to flaunt it in a negative sense.
* EatingSolvesEverything: Since her Quirk involves creating objects base on how much she had eaten, she always makes sure to have eaten enough to make a solution for even the toughest of problems.
* EndearinglyDorky: Momo is a NiceGirl who tries to be as mature and serious as possible but still can get easily excited and be somewhat awkward and goofy.
* ExtremeDoormat: For a while, she had trouble voicing her own ideas and plans, usually going along with others. However, during the Final Exams Arc, she gets better.
* FatalFlaw: Her indecisiveness and low self-esteem were holding her back, especially as she used to compare herself with Todoroki a lot. Later on, she rebuilds her confidence and makes choices and plans on her own. She still struggles with insecurities and self-doubt, but her confidence grows as she learns to stop comparing herself to others, mostly Todoroki.
* FishOutOfWater: She's filthy rich, but she often ''forgets'' that her fellow classmates don't have things such as butlers or giant fluffy master beds.
* FriendlyRivalry: She formed one with Kendo during the Joint Training Arc. Kendo was disheartened over the fact she and Yaoyorozu were treated as a package deal despite feeling Yaoyorozu got better grades and had a better Quirk, and revealed she desired to face off with Yaoyorozu, something Yaoyorozu was happy to oblige with. It helps that outside of training, the two have gotten along swimmingly thanks to their joint internship under Uwabami.
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: Whether she's addressing elders, or her peers, Yaoyorozu speaks in a formal, dignified manner in her Japanese dialogue, never using casual phrases. It's noteworthy that she's the only girl who uses the "-san" honorific to address boys.
* GoGetterGirl: She's focused on academic studies and becoming a heroine, which shows in her class grades and rank, but falls into HeroicSelfDeprecation at times.
* GreatBigBookOfEverything: One of her support items is a dictionary called "the Yaoyorictionary" (or in some translations, "the Yaoyopedia"). It contains comprehensive descriptions of what is needed to make every single item that she needs.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: She's prone to insecurity regarding her intelligence and skills as a heroine. After Tokoyami easily defeats her, she slides into [[HerOwnWorstEnemy doubting herself entirely]] until Todoroki [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre speaks out and gives her a much-needed pep talk]].
* HiddenBuxom: {{Zigzagg|ingTrope}}ed. In her school uniform and day-to-day clothing (which leans towards pretty and graceful, rather than provocative), it's not quite evident how well-endowed she is. But as her hero costume and appearance in a bikini in the anime reveal, she is ''stacked''.
* HighHeelPower: She wears high heels as part of her hero costume plus she's one of the top students academically, has a powerful Quirk, and possesses amazing leadership skills.
* HugeSchoolGirl: At fifteen to sixteen, Momo stands at a whopping 173 centimeters (5'8) tall, towering over most of her class and year mates, being the tallest female of the first years. [[https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS6A_Z72QUXJG1ndNm03pJ-dIo2Fw_mhN7XsQ&usqp=CAU As seen here]], when the students of Class 1-A stand heightwise, most girls are grouped around the [[TinySchoolboy shorter boys]] (Mineta, Tokoyami and Midoriya), Momo stands between Bakugo (who is only slightly shorter than her) and Todoroki (who is slightly taller). Of course, InUniverse this is downplayed as Quirks that can affect a person's height without altering it are common so no one treats their respective heights as anything special, especially as she's only the 75th percentile in terms of height.
* HumbleHero: Zigzagged. She honestly wants to be a heroine for good, but is completely oblivious when socializing with those on the lower spectrum of the economy class, so she tends to come across as InnocentlyInsensitive towards her friends. Interestingly, this is considered an endearing point of hers for them.
* ImaginationBasedSuperpower: She can create anything from her body -- from mundane things like Russian dolls to weapons as powerful as cannons. The downsides are that she has to know the exact molecular makeup of whatever she's creating and that her power is limited by her food intake.
* ImprobableHairstyle: How does her ponytail stay up like that?
* InconsistentSpelling: Her hero name is "Creati", but the {{eyecatch}} of the sixth season of the anime spells it as "Creaty".
* TheIndecisive: Of the insecure type. Losing to Tokoyami in the Sports Festival arc caused her to lose confidence in herself and constantly compare herself with TheAce Todoroki. Fast forward to the practical exam where she's paired up with him, and she's just following his plan hesitantly, unsure of its effectiveness. When Mr. Aizawa has Todoroki tied up and hanging in the air, she internally [[FreakOut freaks out]] over whether she should save him or just stick to ''his'' plan and keep running. She's able to regain her confidence, make her ''own'' decisions, and come up with a successful strategy, [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre after receiving encouragement from Todoroki]].
-->'''Yaoyorozu:''' ''[having an inner conflict]'' Is Todoroki all right? Is this okay? Should I make something to help me go faster at the expense of time? ''Is this okay''? Will I be able to get out like this? Where am I running? No... why? '''Is this... ''really'' okay'''?
* InnocentlyInsensitive: In an endearing way, Yaoyorozu tends to forget that status-wise, she's much wealthier than her classmates, not because she feels that she's above them, but because she's naive about their differing lifestyles. So she'll do things like casually talking about her mansion and expensive tea brands while being oblivious to how baffled her friends are. However, she's so sweet that her classmates find her too adorable to be mad at her.
* InSeriesNickname: Yaomomo, mostly used by Jiro and the other girls in the class.
* LadyOfWar: A sophisticated, graceful {{ojou}} who shows great expertise in wielding the different weapons she generates from her [[SpontaneousWeaponCreation Quirk]], especially staffs. Even in very dangerous situations, despite her young age, she remains calm and analytical enough to devise innovative strategies.
* TheLeader: Yaoyorozu has notable leadership skills for her age. She's capable of understanding a situation quickly and formulate a plan fast. Midnight praises her and says she will be a great leader one day. She often becomes the leader of the class whenever Midoriya isn't around. [[spoiler:She also needs to lead a group of interns from 1-A and 1-B into halting Gigantomachia]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijg28rq_LuU&index=52&list=PLEQjOG7DtEQHzWS2q4btHlyc3DbN_U7iK "Momo Yaoyorozu"]], which is a sophisticated and sweet piece that is led by a violin.
* LeotardOfPower: Her hero costume is essentially a rather revealing one-piece.
* LogicalWeakness: Not only can she not create things she doesn't know how to create down to the atomic level, but she also needs time to both make and use her items. Tokoyami defeats her in the Sports Festival by having Dark Shadow attack her continuously, giving her no time to think or go on the offensive herself. Even then, excess use can drain her to exhaustion as she still needs lipids for herself.
* LongHairIsFeminine: She has long black hair usually tied in a ponytail, and is a refined, polite girl from an extremely wealthy family.
* MatterReplicator: Her Quirk allows her to come up with any object out of her body save for living matter, though larger objects take more time and cause ClothingDamage. The material is transmuted from her body fat.
* MeaningfulName: "Yaoyorozu" is a traditional word that means "eight million" or, more appropriately, a really high number. This relates to the amount of stuff she can create with her Quirk and to [[WealthsInAName her financial position]].
* MiseryTrigger: Yaoyorozu's Quirk allows her to make just about anything depending on how much mass it requires and how much food she's eaten. As she herself puts it, the more she eats, the more she makes. When Sero compares this to poop, Yaoyorozu becomes instantly depressed.
* MsFanservice: The lower part of her hero costume consist of two utility belts and a top that [[NavelDeepNeckline boldly displays her cleavage]]. Given that her Quirk requires exposed skin to produce objects, there is at least some practical justification for this.
* NavelDeepNeckline: The top of her hero costume is a shirt with a cut low enough to reach her midriff.
* NeverGetsFat: She has the ability to make just about anything out of her body fat, so whatever weight she puts on through eating is quickly turned into various items she uses while being a hero in training. In fact, she has to go out of her way to make sure she's eating extra to make up for all the extra calories she burns.
* NiceGirl: Although she can come off as a little stern and condescending due to her upbringing, she has nothing but the best interests at heart and radiates sweetness when she's in a good mood, leaving her surrounded by "bounciness" [=SFX=] during such times.
* NoConservationOfEnergy: Downplayed. Creating things is explicitly said to use her own body fat and is limited by her food intake, but the amount of stuff she's able to create at once still far exceeds what should be possible (such as during the U.A. Sports Festival, she pulls an entire cannon out of herself), especially considering her relatively slender frame.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** In a deleted panel from the manga that is included in the volume extras and anime, she was ''[[ThrowTheDogABone hyper]]'' overjoyed when she was asked to host a study session at her house. She then proceeded to obliviously brag about the perks of her posh accommodations, without realizing she just insulted everybody who's working class.
** Despite the seriousness of the situation, during the Hideout Raid Arc, when the team needs disguises, they purchase them from a store. When it's pointed out that Yaoyorozu could've just made them herself, [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial she stammers and tries to play it off as supporting the local economy]], despite it being pretty obvious that she was excited about visiting said store.
* NumberTwo: She is the vice president of Class 1-A behind Ida. In an unofficial way, she is also this to Midoriya. In most given situations, Class 1-A looks at Midoriya for guidance. If he is not around, the one to take the role of TheLeader will often be her.
* OddFriendship: She becomes Jiro's close friend as time goes. Jiro being the most outspoken tomboyish and snarkiest girl in the group, while Yaoyorozu is a pinnacle of delicacy and politeness.
* {{Ojou}}: A polite and well-mannered girl from a very rich family. Her insane wealth has become something of a RunningGag.
* ThePowerOfCreation: Her Quirk can create any non-living object she wants so long as she knows the exact molecular formula of said object.
* RedIsHeroic: She wears a red costume and is a sweet and kindhearted hero.
* RedOniBlueOni: In opposition to their color schemes, she plays the Blue Oni to Jiro's Red in both the USJ and the filler episode 55: calm, poised and calculating.
* RichInDollarsPoorInSense: She's so used to her luxurious accommodations that she doesn't realize how badly she accidentally insults her working-class classmates when she talks about how many resources she has at her disposal nor does she notice how uncomfortable and out of place they feel in her incredibly large and fancy house. Her mother also forbids her from attending public festivals known for selling sweets and street food, as her family's personal cooks could make better, less sickening desserts.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Played with. Her Quirk requires exposed skin, so her hero costume is [[{{Stripperiffic}} very skimpy]], to begin with, and she has a pretty significant problem with ClothingDamage when creating larger objects. She doesn't seem to worry about exposing herself at all for practical purposes, such as when Jiro embarrassingly points out to Yaoyorozu that her plan destroyed her entire top, the latter is unfazed and simply states that she'll make a new one. Even male classmates being around doesn't cause her to hesitate at all, as she pulls open her top in front of Todoroki without warning him in order to allow for more space in creating alloy fibers, and in the anime adaptation, she all but flashes an embarrassed Shoji when she needs more space to work with. However, she [[ReluctantFanserviceGirl doesn't appreciate being manipulated into things like this for non-practical purposes]], as seen with Mineta and Kaminari's plot to trick the girls into wearing cheerleader outfits during the U.A. Sports Festival halftime, even though her hero costume shows more skin than the cheerleader outfits.
* SilkHidingSteel: Yaoyorozu is elegant, kind, feminine and demure...and is a brilliant strategist, skilled with a bo-staff, and is the smartest student in Class 1-A, potentially in the whole series.
* SkilledButNaive: Aizawa notes that while she's very gifted, in terms of mental/emotional maturity, she's still a 15-year-old girl who easily gets overwhelmed in times of crisis. She matures a little bit after Todoroki boosts her morale by professing his faith in her abilities after she suffers a lapse in confidence. During the Forest Training Camp Arc, she manages to make a tracker to hunt down a Nomu with, and All Might praises her for her quick thinking and ability to make snap decisions.
* SolidGoldPoop: It's heavily implied that she provided the three gold bars for the Christmas party's mystery gift swap.
* SpoiledSweet: She is the wealthiest student in her class, but she never flaunts her money or acts snobby -- willingly, that is. She's prone to accidental insults, and she's so used to being able to casually spend large amounts of money that she forgets her friends can't do the same. Nevertheless, she still is a genuinely kind and sweet girl, who willingly opens her home to her classmates who need to study for finals, and always looks out for the others on the battlefield.
* SpontaneousWeaponCreation: She has the ability to generate any type of non-living matter from her body, and she uses it to create weapons and other equipment for her friends.
* SquishyWizard: She can create just about any kind of object she wishes, but depending on the object, it takes time to make them. So she needs others to hold off the enemy while she creates the materials she needs. While her creations can do a lot of damage (like when she makes an entire cannon) and is possibly the most versatile Quirk of any character, in terms of direct physical prowess she's as normal as anyone else, as demonstrated in her fight with Kendo.
* StatuesqueStunner: Yaoyorozu stands tall at 173 cm (roughly a little over [=5'8''=], and elevated to roughly [=5'9''=] in her hero costume's boots), towering over all the girls in her class and even several of the boys. It also helps her stand out as the vice president of the class and the most matured, demure and refined girl out of the bunch.
* TheStrategist: Combine TheAce with TeenGenius and this is the result; Yaoyorozu's quick thinking and considerable intelligence give her the potential to be a great strategist.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: {{Justified|Trope}}. Because Yaoyorozu needs her skin exposed to have free access to her Quirk, her outfits are revealing for practical reasons. She comes dangerously close to this prospect but manages to stay within the [[StealthPun bare]] limits of wholesome. While wearing her gym clothes, she'll often unzip her jacket to reveal a sports bra for a similar level of effectiveness with significantly less exposure. She also tends to be fairly prone to ClothingDamage.
* SuperpowerLottery: Definitely a winner. She was born with one of the stronger Quirks in the series, as the ability to make literally any object or weapon she wants essentially gives her unmatched creative potential even compared to most pro-heroes; ''All For One himself'' is probably the only person with more versatility than her. Still, her work-ethic is not to be discredited. She has to know the exact molecular structure of anything she wants to create, which requires an encyclopedic knowledge of a wide variety of things and took years of studying to master.
* ThisBananaIsArmed: During the Final Exam against Mr. Aizawa, she constantly produces Russian nesting dolls as an indicator if he's present, since she would stop producing them. When Aizawa does appear, she throws the dolls she made at him, most of which had flash grenades hidden inside.
* TearsOfJoy: She cries after she passes the practical exam with Todoroki, especially after he thanks her for developing the effective strategy that allowed them to win against Mr. Aizawa.
* TeenGenius: A justified example as Yaoyorozu's Quirk requires her to know the exact molecular formula of any object she wants to create, so she needs to have great memory and analysis skills. This is made obvious as she has the highest grades of the entire Class of 1-A and according to her stats in the Official Character Book, she has an Intelligence Ranking of 6/5 or S.[[note]]This puts her in the same intelligence bracket as [[BigGood All Might]], [[SuperIntelligence Nezu]] and [[BigBad All For One]].[[/note]]
* TokenRichStudent: While other students like Ida and Todoroki are also mentioned to be fairly well-off, she unknowingly flaunts her wealth in front of her working-class classmates as a RunningGag. She has a fabulous BigFancyHouse, goes on vacations to Europe, brings a too-large four-poster bed to a Japanese dorm because she didn't know it wouldn't fit, and is excited at the prospect of thrift shopping because she's never done it before. However, she's so sweet about it that her classmates don't mind.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Kyoka Jiro is a [[DeadpanSnarker snarky]] rock musician with BoyishShortHair. Momo Yaoyorozu is a sweet YamatoNadeshiko with {{long hair|IsFeminine}}.
* TookALevelInBadass: Her usage of Creation initially starts with basic melee items like poles and shields as well as some utility items, then over the course of the series, begins to make more advanced creations of the mechanical kind like cannons and gas masks, and takes a step up further with electronics like GPS bugs and trackers as well as heat-detecting headsets that can lock onto things, which is especially impressive since she needs to detail every single aspect of a creation down to its atomic level.
* {{Tritagonist}}: Yaoyorozu often takes this role when she tags along with people like Todoroki and Midoriya, acting as the strategist of the group who keeps everybody composed and stops them from making rash decisions.
* UnclePennybags: She's very happy to open her home to her classmates when they ask her for study tips, going so far as to ask what kinds of tea they would prefer and bringing what are clearly very expensive sweets to her study hall for them to enjoy.
* UtilityBelt: Wears a thick yellow one as part of her suit.
* VaporWear: Her hero costume clearly has very little bust support, being a LeotardOfPower with a NavelDeepNeckline.
* VocalEvolution: An English Dub only variant. In Season 1, Creator/ColleenClinkenbeard uses a lower pitched and rougher voice, but while that works for older characters she's voiced like [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist Riza Hawkeye]] and [[Manga/FairyTail Erza Scarlet]], it only causes VocalDissonance for Momo Yaoyorozu due to her being 15 still. Season 2 and on has her adopt a higher pitched and softer voice for Momo to denote her being younger, and though it ''does'' still get rougher at times, it's largely restricted to when Momo is exhausted or overtly serious.
* WellTrainedButInexperienced: Momo Yaoyorozu got into U.A. on recommendation, coming from a rich family and possessing a Quirk - "Creation" - that she had spent hours studying for in its use. While she is an incredibly intelligent member of the class and has used her Quirk to great effectiveness when as part of a group, she has difficulty when forced to stand on her own, a problem that has given her reserves of self-doubt as she continues to lose fights as the series progresses. Recognizing this, Aizawa pairs her up with Shoto Todoroki (who also relies too much on his Quirk to carry him) against himself.
* YamatoNadeshiko: While she is a MsFanservice in a {{Stripperiffic}} LeotardOfPower, otherwise, she hits many of the qualifications, especially out of costume. She is a kind, polite and selfless young lady, beautiful with long black hair and fair skin, acts calm and demure, takes the TeamMom role towards her classmates, and proves to be a tough LadyOfWar.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Like Ida, she has a very mature physique for a 15-year-old. This actually comes in handy when they disguise themselves when rescuing Bakugo because she looks much older as a result.
