The Three Great Shinobi of Konoha (''Sannin'') are a trio of extremely powerful ninja from Konoha hailed as three of the greatest shinobi of their time. They were students of the Third Hokage in their youth and eventually developed into powerful, feared ninja. Despite being a team and having accomplished great things together, the three members were always in constant disagreement with one another, which Tsunade referred to as a "three-way deadlock". During the Second Shinobi World War in one battle with [[TheDreaded Hanzo of the Salamander]], they were the only Konoha ninja to survive Hanzo's attacks. As a reward for this, Hanzo dubbed them the "Three Great Shinobi of Konoha", a title that would follow them for the rest of their lives and which they themselves would use with pride. Because of their legendary skills and prowess, each of the three have been considered for the position of Hokage at one time or another. Jiraiya was Hiruzen's preference for the position of Fourth Hokage, but he wasn't interested in the responsibilities. Orochimaru applied for the position, but Hiruzen did not believe Orochimaru had the village's best interests at heart and after the death of Hiruzen, Tsunade was offered a proposal to become a Hokage, which she eventually accepted. Two of them, Jiraiya and Tsunade, play mostly {{mentor|s}} roles, while the third, Orochimaru, is the main antagonist of the first series. All three are in their fifties during the main series, but only Jiraiya looks his age.

[[folder:General]]
!!All the Three Great Shinobi provide examples of:
* AgeInsecurity: Tsunade and Orochimaru. Both of them use jutsu to manipulate their appearance. Orochimaru takes it to another level with the way he does it... Interestingly, when he joined the Akatsuki, Orochimaru was paired up with Sasori who similarly maintains his youthful appearance using puppets.
* BrokenAce: They are some of the most renowned ninjas in the world. They are also some of the most broken individuals, having endured plenty of tragedies.
* FacialMarkings: They all have facial markings. Orochimaru has markings around his eyes, Jiraiya has two red tear tracks below his eyes and Tsunade has a diamond-shaped mark on her forehead, which extends to a full face marking when she's using her Creation Rebirth technique.
* ImprobableAge: The three have apparently graduated from the Academy and became Genin at the age of '''six'''.
* LivingLegend: All three are very powerful ninjas on par with the Kages (In fact they were all offered the role of Hokage which Tsunade eventually accepted). They all get various moments to show just how badass they are throughout the series.
** Jiraiya was the first point of contact with Pain and actually defeated the first 3 bodies of Pain soundly. He only got taken out by the other three bodies whom he had no idea of their existence. Pain even doubted his own possibility of winning if Jiraiya had known about the 6 bodies in the beginning. This is an ArcVillain who literally destroyed the Leaf Village and killed/incapacitated everyone in it at the time.
** Most need powerful high-level jutsu to do enough damage to invoke the ChunkySalsaRule, ''Tsunade just needs to punch''.
** Orochimaru fought (a drugged) Jiraiya and (a freaked out) Tsunade ''without his arms'', and it ended in a ''stalemate''. Later, he '''went mano-a-mano with a Four-Tailed Naruto''' while maintaining his ForTheLulz attitude throughout the whole fight up until the very end. The man gets mad props for that.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Averted with Jiraiya, zig zagged with Orochimaru and straight with Tsunade. All three have impressively long heads of hair well into their 50s.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Applies to Orochimaru and Jiraiya in their youth.
* MasculineFeminineAndrogyneTrio: Jiraiya (muscular and coarse man), Tsunade (buxom and beautiful woman known for her healing, although still TheLadette), and Orochimaru (a slender being with long hair who has inhabited both male and female bodies, he is referred to as male however).
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: Jiraiya being one the earliest people in the village to befriend Naruto makes him the nice. Orochimaru defecting from the village, joining the Akatsuki, and being the primary antagonist of the earlier episodes make him the mean. Tsunade being initially hostile towards Naruto and always being slightly combative makes her the in-between.
* OldMaster: At the start of the series they are 50 years old and very very powerful. All of their known students are ''also'' very very powerful, highlighting the fact that not only are they mighty individuals but they can produce mighty individuals.
* OlderThanTheyLook: All three of them look good for their age to be fair, but this mainly applies to Orochimaru and Tsunade. They use jutsu to make themselves look younger. [[spoiler: Ironically, it's Jiraiya who's the first of them to die.]]
* OnlyOneName: All of them. Jiraya and Orochimaru do not belong to any clan, but Tsunade belongs to not one, but two notable clans (the Senju and Uzumaki), yet she still lacks a surname. Orochimaru's parents' grave has two words written for each of them, signifying he has a surname, but it is impossible to read due to the kanji's bad quality.
* PowerTrio: Back in the day, they were in the same genin team.
* PublicDomainCharacter: They are based on three main characters from the classic Japanese story ''Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari'' (''The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya''). Lampshaded when an episode in the anime about Jiraiya has the exact same name as this book.
* RedBaron: As a group, the reason why they got the title of "Sannin" is that they survived fighting against [[TheDreaded Hanzo of the Salamander]].
* SexyMentor: All three look good for their age, ''especially Tsunade'', and they each choose a member of Team 7 to mentor.
* SoLastSeason: They are hailed as the "Legendary Sannin" and it's stated that only a Sannin can defeat a Sannin, something which is enforced by Orochimaru making a fool out of Hiruzen, but struggling against Jiraiya and Tsunade (although they all were subject to WorfHadTheFlu). Further enforced by Itachi and Kisame running from Jiraiya but are still shown to make Kakashi and Kurenai suffer. Needless to say, all three are vastly surpassed in ''Shippuden''.
* SummonMagic: They each can summon an animal; Jiraiya summons toads, Tsunade summons slugs and Orochimaru summons snakes.
* WorldsBestWarrior: The Sannin are, at least initially, referred to as legendary shinobi with powers greater than Hiruzen himself and considered the greatest leaf ninja of all time. However, they are revealed to have gotten this title not from their feats later in life, but for surviving a three-on-one fight against Hanzo, well before they had gotten far more powerful techniques, and all three are subject to PowerCreepPowerSeep.
* WorfHadTheFlu: During their climactic fight in Part I, all three of them were subjected to this which explains why they couldn't go all-out despite being reputed as among Konoha's strongest. Orochimaru's arms were sealed away and had to rely on Kabuto to summon Manda, Jiraiya was drugged by Tsunade which restricted his chakra, and Tsunade was extremely rusty due to years of being out of action as well as being (initially) restricted by her hemophobia.

->''A real ninja is one who endures no matter what gets thrown at him… Let me explain something to you: there is only one thing that matters if you're a shinobi, and it isn't the number of jutsu you possess. All you do need is the guts to never give up!''

The legendary Toad Mountain Sage, Jiraiya is a randy loner who spends much of his time WalkingTheEarth. His first appearance in the series was during the Chunin exam arc when he knocked out Naruto's trainer when the latter caught him peeking on a women's shower. Naruto (who had no clue as to the old man's true identity and power, and called him "pervy sage") subsequently badgered him into continuing his training personally.\

Jiraiya is basically indolent and shuns responsibility, despite his great skill as a ninja. The village elders initially offered him the position of Hokage after the Third's death, but he turned it down because he knew he'd screw it up and then he suggested Tsunade as a better option. He makes most of his money from writing pornographic novels that are a runaway hit in the ''Naruto'' universe (the same ones Kakashi is never seen without), and would much rather spend his time drinking, gambling, and wenching than doing anything serious. Nevertheless, Jiraiya is a fierce warrior and never backs down when he's really needed, helping to beat back Orochimaru's attack on Konoha in the Chunin Exam arc and always keeping his eyes and ears open regarding the whereabouts of Konoha's enemies, particularly Orochimaru and the Akatsuki.\

Prior to the series, Jiraiya spent some time in the home of the great toads, who trained him and prophesied that he would eventually meet and train TheChosenOne. (Jiraiya initially believed this person to be Pain, but later came to believe that it was Naruto. (Eventually, it was revealed that ''both'' were the "Chosen One".)) Jiraiya returned to the village after this and operated as part of Konoha's active military for a time along with the other two. (During this period, he also trained several genin, one of whom would eventually become the Fourth Hokage.) When Orochimaru defected, Jiraiya tried to convince him to return to the village, [[MyGreatestFailure but his failure to do so]] [[OldShame shamed]] him so much that he left the village and [[WalkingTheEarth wandered alone for many years]].\

Jiraiya and Orochimaru's relationship is deliberately designed to mirror Naruto and Sasuke's. Sasuke, like Orochimaru, is naturally gifted and believes only in his own personal power, while Naruto, like Jiraiya, had to work his way up and believes in [[ThePowerofFriendship comradeship]]. Jiraiya gave up on Orochimaru, but Naruto is determined not to do the same for Sasuke.\

Jiraiya teaches Naruto the [[SummonMagic Summoning Jutsu]] and the Rasengan (which he himself learned from his former student, Minato, the Fourth Hokage) over the course of the series. He also attempted to find a way to allow Naruto to control his Nine-Tailed Fox transformations, but failed in this and settled for merely suppressing them instead. Many of Jiraiya's techniques are toad-themed as a result of his time in their community; he can summon them to assist him in battle, and can draw on their power to go into a [[SuperMode more powerful]] "[[EnlightenmentSuperpowers Sage Mode]]". He also has several [[PlayingWithFire Fire-Style]] and [[DishingOutDirt Earth-Style]] techniques and is implied to know many more, although he does precious little fighting in the series. His presence and power are what keeps Akatsuki away from Naruto for a time; Itachi believes that Jiraiya could beat any two Akatsuki members single-handedly. In ''Shippuden'', it's revealed that Jiraiya is Naruto's godfather, explaining his interest in the boy's safety and development.\

At the end of the first series, Jiraiya takes Naruto on a three-year-long journey to train in preparation for his future battles with the Akatsuki; this journey forms the TimeSkip that separates the two series.\

In ''Shippuden'', Jiraiya returns Naruto into Kakashi's keeping, then returns to gathering intelligence on Orochimaru and Akatsuki. Following a tip, he tracks the Akatsuki's leader Pain to the Hidden Rain Village and engages him in battle. Jiraiya realizes that Pain is a former student of his, although greatly changed, and sends one of his toads with that information back to the village. He uses up all of his tricks, even going Sage Mode, but Pain kills him by crushing his throat with one blow. His final thoughts are of Naruto.\

Ultimately, Naruto was able to redeem his former student Nagato through his teachings and is still thought of highly by his friends and loved ones after his death (i.e. Tsunade, Orochimaru, Naruto, etc.)\

->His hobby was sneaking a peek into a Women's Bathing House.
->Favorite phrase: "Free and uninhibited"
----
* TheAce: Similar to Naruto, Jiraiya was originally the loser of his team. By adulthood, however, Jiraiya became one of the strongest ninjas in the world and a world-renowned author. His skill was acknowledged by both Kisame and Itachi, and even though he loses to Nagato (a fight which still sees him destroying three of Nagato's Paths), the latter admits that it's only because Jiraiya was unaware that Nagato had 6 bodies and not just three. After his death, Obito Uchiha acknowledges Jiraiya's skills and the value of his teaching, claiming that it's amazing he managed to destroy any of Nagato's Paths and, later, that it was really Jiraiya's teachings, via Naruto, that had won the war. To add to this, Kabuto considered him one of the prime targets to revive with Edo Tensei and was disappointed he couldn't revive him. Finally, towards the end of the series, Naruto also acknowledges that of the numerous legendary ninja he's met, it's Jiraiya who he respected the most.
* AchillesInHisTent: Because he's always out of the village traveling.
* AffectionateNickname: Naruto calls him "Ero-senin" or "Pervy Sage".
* AllLovingHero: Despite Jiraiya's eccentric behavior and prowess as a shinobi, he was a strong believer in peace; his hope being to one day end the hatred that plagued the ninja world. Jiraiya also held a great deal of faith in the next generation, and saw them as the solution to this hate.
* AnArmAndALeg: Pain's Asura Path attacks him from behind, severing his arm.
* AnimalMotifs: Frogs and toads.
* TheAntiNihilist: Despite the cycle of hate that plagued the shinobi world, he believed that there would come a day when peace would be achieved.
* AwesomeByAnalysis: He's able to counteract Ametarasu just by seeing it once, sealing it away before it can burn anything else.
* BadassBoast: Per the usual for Jiraiya to proclaim his legendary stature to an opponent. See LargeHam below.
%%* BadassBookworm: He ''is'' an author after all.
* BadassNormal: Comparatively for the series. Jiraiya comes from no famous bloodline or clan, was not born with natural talent or prodigious skill, possesses no Kekkei Genkai powers, was never bonded with a tailed-beast, and has no body modifications, unlike Orochimaru and Tsunade. Everything he is was obtained via hard work and pure skill.
* BadassTeacher: He became the teacher of the Ame Orphans, Minato Namikaze (and the other members of Team Jiraiya), and Naruto Uzumaki.
* BarbarianLonghair: This Sage has a long and unkempt white hair.
* BarelyChangedDubName: In French, his name is Jiraya.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Jiraiya is ultimately a NiceGuy, but he is ''scary'' when he's in battle.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: A super pervert prone to overdramatic introductions who’s one of the legendary Sannin.
* BigGood: He was one of the most powerful shinobi in the series and directly safeguarded Naruto from the Akatsuki. Even after Jiraiya's death, his ideals continue to influence the heroes and provide the path to lasting peace between the five nations. When defeated as the Juubi's Jinchuuriki, Obito even credits the unity of the shinobi forces to Jiraiya's ideals and says one could say Jiraiya had defeated him.
* BreathWeapon: In addition to Fire Release: Flame Bullet and Big Flame Bullet, Jiraiya is capable of converting his chakra into oil and spewing it from his mouth.
* BrilliantButLazy: He's a smart guy, but he prefers to spend his time messing around chasing girls instead. Notably, despite teaching Naruto about summoning toads for backup and the rasengan, he never expanded on either area despite having 2 and a half years to do so. It was Kakashi who taught Naruto how to upgrade the Rasengan with an element before creating the Rasenshuriken and it was only after Jiraiya's death that Naruto learned that the toads could teach him senjutsu.
* BrokenAce: Jiraiya was never able to win Tsunade's heart, the one woman he genuinely had feelings for. He was unable to convince Orochimaru from abandoning the village. He also blames himself for being unable to save either his teacher Hiruzen and his student Minato. And despite his apparent big ego, [[HeroicSelfDeprecation he had a lot of self-loathing]], believing that his life was just one long string of failures where it actually mattered. The fact he considers Naruto the one thing he did right as he dies, says a lot about how much Jiraiya hates about himself.
* BrokenPedestal:
** He became one for Nagato after he left the Rain Orphans and they experienced more hardships. Nagato felt the peace Jiraiya spoke of was naïve and couldn't let go of his hatred of the Leaf Village. [[RebuiltPedestal Naruto is able to restore Nagato's faith in Jiraiya]].
** PlayedForLaughs when it came to Sakura. During the first anime filler arc, she calls out Naruto's blatant lack of respect for him. Two episodes later, with his shameless love for women and using their money to effectively go out drinking, she admits she's stopped respecting him. She does still regard him greatly, but she's just as quick to lose her temper with him as Naruto is.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Lazy, perverted, self proclaimed voyeur and all around slacker... who is also one of the strongest Shinobi in the Elemental lands, to the point that even Pain had to take him seriously.
* CasanovaWannabe: He's a sucker for women, even though his work is romantic enough to catch [[LovableSexManiac Kakashi]]'s attention
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: While nowhere near as strong as Tsunade, he could still level buildings and slaughter dozens of Ninjas in Taijutsu alone.
* ChivalrousPervert: A far more benevolent example than most examples in anime and manga. Jiraiya always protects the ladies - whom he has a thing for - and he never tries to cop a feel or pressure them into sexual favours.
* TheChooserOfTheOne: Jiraiya was prophesied to train TheChosenOne who would either bring peace or destruction. Considering all of his other candidates/trainees are now dead and neither has happened yet, the titular character is now the one by default.
* ClarkKentOutfit: A 50-year-old ninja wears an outfit that makes him look flabby and yet underneath he's [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/dogs-of-war/images/4/4e/Jiraiya-gif-jiraiya-34683481-500-251.gif/revision/latest?cb=20151002210402 rocking a six-pack and biceps]].
* CombinationAttack: Fire Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet has him execute Fire Release: Flame Bullet while one of the toads he’d summon (like Gamabunta) spew out oil. In addition, in Sage Mode, he can perform Sage Art: Goemon if he has summoned Shima and Fukasaku.
* CoolOldGuy: Definitely is a friendly, wise sage...when he's not acting pervy.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Jiraiya is (even by his own admission) a ''"super pervert"'' and is just as clumsy as [[IdiotHero Naruto]]. He also is one of the most powerful shinobi in history and when he gets serious...'''Look.''' '''Out.'''
* ADeathInTheLimelight: Doesn't do much in ''Shippuden'' until he goes to investigate Pain's whereabouts, a mission from which he never returns.
* DeathSeeker: He isn't particularly interested in dying on its own, but believes that a FailureKnight like himself will only be remembered if he has a spectacular death like the ninjas of old. Ironically enough, when he does finally seem to drop this, as shown during his fight with Pain, he ends up dying.
* {{Determinator}}: Believes that the most important thing for a ninja to have is the willingness never to give up.
* DirtyOldMan: Probably one the most famous examples in Japanese media. He's very much eager for young, attractive women, spying on them bathing for "research" and uses money to pay them to spend time with him.
* DishingOutDirt: With his Earth Release: Swamp of the Underworld jutsu, he can create a swamp beneath a target to trap them. This technique is strong enough to immobilize Orochimaru's giant snake summons.
* DoggedNiceGuy: Towards Tsunade. Ever since he was nearly killed after peeping on Tsunade, he's used greater discretion in expressing his interests in her, careful to make his advances come off as playful. Jiraiya considers his inability to win Tsunade's heart to be one of the greatest failures of his life.
* TheDreaded: Let's put it this way: when Itachi and Kisame realized that they were going to have to tangle with him, their immediate instinct was to abandon the mission and flee (with Kisame admitting that he was way out of their league), and even ''[[PersonOfMassDestruction Nagato]]'' admitted that had Jiraiya known how the Six Paths of Pain worked, he would have won the fight. The ''only'' reason why Jiraiya has such a poor fight record is the fact that external circumstances tended to conspire against him.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: He literally ''wills his heart to beat again'' in order to deliver a code to Konoha about Pain, dying against the strongest ninja currently living who acknowledges Jiraiya as a truly worthy foe. Despite living in the shadow of what he calls his own failures, Jiraiya dies with a smile on his face, realizing that he achieved the glorious end he desired and that he has inspired Naruto to one day save the world.
* EccentricMentor: To Naruto and Nagato and the other Rain Orphans. He forced the latter to wear frog suits.
* EnergyBall: The [[SwirlyEnergyThingy Rasengan]]. Which he learned from his previous student, Minato, and taught it to Naruto.
* EquippableAlly: Using [[SuperMode Sage Mode]] requires his supply of natural energy be constantly replenished, something that is difficult to do while in combat. For this reason, Jiraiya summons Fukasaku and Shima and [[FusionDance fuses them to his body]], having them gather natural energy for him. As an added bonus, Fukasaku and Shima can combine attacks with Jiraiya's, or they can perform justu that he can't, such as genjutsu. They both also serve as advisors in combat offering Jiraiya their expertise on strategy.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Notable in the anime filler arc, he's offended when Sakura thinks he's about to hit on the clearly underage Sasame.
* FacialMarkings: Born with 'em.
* FailureKnight: The deaths of Minato and Hiruzen took a huge toll on him. So did failing to bring back Orochimaru and finding out that Yahiko died and Nagato and Konan turned evil. Jiraiya believes his life is simply a series of failures compared to the Hokages of old until the last moments of his life.
* FatalFlaw: PlayedForLaughs. Jiraiya's perverted nature has led to him being tricked (e.g., Naruto, the Akatsuki) or severely beaten up (e.g., Tsunade).
* {{Foil}}: Jiraiya and Orochimaru's relationship is deliberately designed to mirror Naruto and Sasuke's. Sasuke, like Orochimaru, is naturally gifted and believes only in his own personal power, while Naruto, like Jiraiya, had to work his way up and believes in comradeship. Jiraiya gave up on Orochimaru, but Naruto is determined not to do the same for Sasuke.
* FrogMen: Sage Mode, which he does not have mastery of. This causes his Sage Mode form to make him more toad-like in appearance, such as warts and webbed hands and feet; although his frog-like legs enable him to jump better, he dislikes the overall appearance because he believes women will find it unattractive.
* GenerationXerox: Initially displaying outward interest in Naruto for the latter matching his perversion and determination, he was eventually shown to be Naruto's godfather, who did truly care for his welfare and making him his inheritor of his philosophy of the "Will of Fire."
* GeometricMagic: Probably one of the greatest seal masters in the series.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Jiraiya teaching ninjutsu to three Hidden Rain orphans so that they could protect themselves turned out much better than he would have liked or expected. In his defense, it was not '''his''' actions and mistakes that turned them against Konoha. The blame goes right to Danzo's attempt to kill them GoneHorriblyWrong.
* GoOutWithASmile: Right before he dies, Jiraiya recalls that Naruto was named after the character in his book, and decides that he had succeeded in something after all.
* HeroicSacrifice: He knew that Pain could overpower him, but still fought him to gather information to help the village instead of running away and escaping. His defeat ended up costing him his life.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Near-pathological - even in his last moments he believes that his life was a waste and that he was a loser. The only thing he did ''not'' regret was training Naruto. His only goal in life was to have an awesome death. He managed it.
* HeroicResolve: Thinking of Naruto, he revived himself long enough to deliver intel to Konoha about Pain.
* HeroicWillpower: When fighting Pain he manages to get up -- after being impaled ''multiple times'' AND his heart apparently stopping -- long enough to scribble out a message on Fukasaku for the rest of the village.
* HiddenDepths: While he rarely revealed it outwardly, Jiraiya was a great believer in peace and held a deep longing to change the hatred inherent in the world. While he desired to find an answer to the cycle of hatred that plagued the world, he was never been able to come up with a way to do so and asked Naruto to carry on this wish.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: Look at him. He attracts more attention that Naruto could ever dream of.
* HoneyTrap: Villains attempt this on him once or twice throughout the series. [[LovableSexManiac Surprisingly]], it doesn't actually work either time.
* IdiotHero: He was one as a child: his sole motivation for training and getting stronger was to catch the eye of every pretty girl around him, especially Tsunade. Orochimaru thinks he's one even in his fifties.
* {{Invisibility}}: In his youth, he claims to Sarutobi that he devised a jutsu perfect for peeping at women's baths without being noticed.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: A filler arc delves into the reason why Jiraiya has always been reluctant to go out with Tsunade. He doesn't want to, out of fear of hurting her by [[{{Foreshadowing}} dying before her]]. However, even after Jiraiya dies, she continued to love Dan, and her greatest dream is for ''Dan'' to be alive and they continue to be lovers.
* ItsNotPornItsArt: He claims his peeping on women in the bath is actually research for his books.
* KilledOffForReal: Killed by Pain and not resurrected by either Nagato's Rinne Tensei jutsu because of how much time had passed by that point, nor Kabuto's Edo Tensei due to his body sinking deep into the ocean's depths. While his shadow hangs over the series and Naruto holds him up as the greatest example of a shinobi imaginable, Jiraiya himself is never seen again in any form.
* LadykillerInLove: Jiraiya is a constant flirt with any beautiful lady he meets but he was truly in love with Tsunade.
* LargeHam: One among various examples:
-->'''Jiraiya:''' When you've reached the stature I have... THE LADIES KNEEL AND WORSHIP... AT YOUR AWESOMENESS!!"
* LargeHamTitle: He often refers to himself as the "Great Toad Sage of Mount Myoboku" or something similar in his long flashy introductions.
* LazyBum: He proved to be this as a mentor to Naruto at times, more interested in taking Naruto's money to pay for alcohol and women and peeping on girls for his love novels than actually training him. [[spoiler: The fact that he's actually Naruto's Godfather makes this even worse.]]
* LikeASonToMe: He claimed Minato was like a son and Naruto his grandson, although he was Naruto's godfather.
* LovableSexManiac: He's called "Pervy Sage" for a reason.
-->'''Jiraiya:''' I'm not a Pervert. [[DistinctionWithoutADifference I'm a SUPER PERVERT]]!\
''(or, if you're watching the english dub)''\
'''Jiraiya:''' I am ''not'' a little pervert! I'm a BIG ONE![[note]]Great, that makes [[SarcasmMode all]] the difference.[[/note]]
* LovedINotHonorMore: While Jiraiya may have had romantic feelings for Tsunade, he also had a strong UndyingLoyalty to the Leaf. And when he suspected Tsunade of possibly helping Orochimaru, he point blank told her if she was, then he ''would'' kill her.
* LustMakesYouDumb: When he was a teenager, he got the [[SarcasmMode bright idea]] to peep on Tsunade, [[TooDumbToLive despite the fact that he knew that she could easily kill him if he were caught]]. Sure enough, when he got caught he received a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown so bad that he nearly died.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: He tried to stop Akatsuki's Leader as his grand triumph, but ended up being killed instead. His legacy was to leave behind intel on defeating Pain and his death also furthered Naruto's development experiencing the cycle of hatred.
* MentorsNewHope: He was disappointed to learn Nagato had taken the wrong path because he felt he was the child of prophecy. Before his death, he believes that it is Naruto instead, who Jiraiya was glad to have taught because Naruto reminded him of Minato as well.
* MyGreatestFailure: Not having been able to stop his friend Orochimaru from defecting, nor to save his pupil (the Fourth Hokage) or his master (the Third Hokage). Jiraiya also considers his inability to win Tsunade's heart to be one of his greatest failures as well.
* NiceGuy: Jiraiya is a pervert and a show off, but he's a lover of peace and is easy to befriend.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Jiraiya may not have wanted to leave Naruto unguarded, but his slow act of waiting until Itachi had been humiliated and psychologically tortured before summoning a toad's stomach meant that Sasuke would let his desire for revenge consume him, allowing himself to be taken by the Sound Four and kicking off all of Shippuden.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He acts as dumb as [[IdiotHero Naruto]], but is the best Information broker in the Elemental Lands.
* ObiWanMoment: After a particularly grueling battle against (supposed) Akatsuki Leader Pain that involved Nagato bringing all six of them together to beat him (considering 1 of them can take on several Jonin Shinobi easily, needing all of them to kill someone speaks greatly for their skill/threat level), Jiraiya is impaled 5 times and dropped into the deep waters below. As he sinks, he grimly smiles and references a Japanese proverb[[note]]"The frog at the bottom of the well knows nothing about the vast ocean" which is about how limited your knowledge of the world is if you don't get out and explore a little. What Jiraiya said as he was dying was "The frog at the bottom of the well drifts off into the vast ocean"[[/note]] accepting his death. Bonus points for the StealthPun of the proverb being about a frog, his animal symbol.
* OldMaster: He's 50 and still one of the strongest people in the series. His students are also some of the most powerful in the series; Nagato, Minato, Konan and Naruto all call him "sensei".
* OneManArmy: He managed to fight off several of Pain's Paths, consecutively and concurrently, where those same Paths were only taken out by lots of teamwork from Konoha.
* ParentalAbandonment: Jiraiya does not return to Konoha for years after Minato's death and does not even tell Naruto he even has a Godfather. The reasons include his dangerous work tailing Orochimaru but also Jiraiya's massive failure complex and guilt for letting Minato die in the first place.
* ParentalSubstitute: He is Naruto's godfather who also acted as his sensei and father-figure during the time skip.
* PassingTheTorch: Jiraiya spends his final moments thinking about Naruto, and decides that it is he is the Child of the Prophecy who will find the answer for peace. Satisfied with how this final chapter of his life has turned out, Jiraiya officially ends what he titles the Tale of Jiraiya the Gallant. Before he dies, Jiraiya decides that the sequel should be called the Tale of Naruto Uzumaki, and [[GoOutWithASmile smiles at how good the title is.]]
* ThePeepingTom: Jiraiya spies on girls in hot springs all the time. He calls it "research." Somewhat justified in that he's a popular author of trashy romance novels.
* PlayingWithFire: He most often uses fire jutsu, typically to ignite his own or one of his toad's oil in battle.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: In [[SuperMode Sage Mode]], Jiraiya sports an impressive beard.
* PrehensileHair: He is able to grow and manipulate his hair using jutsu, either to bind and destroy targets or to surround him as a defense, injuring any who try to contact him. In Sage Mode, he creates a [[SpikeShooter needle attack]] using his hair.
* TheProphecy: While he was at Mount Myōboku, the Great Toad Sage made a prediction about Jiraiya: that he would [[WalkingTheEarth travel the world]] and during that time meet the [[TheChosenOne Child of the Prophecy]], a student who would grow up to either save or destroy the world depending upon how Jiraiya taught them. The prophecy also foretold Jiraiya [[ChekhovsGun writing a book]]. Jiraiya considered either Minato and Nagato to be that child until the former's death and the latter's mislead direction. In his last moments, he fully believed Naruto was the Child of Prophecy.
* RedBaron: The Toad Sage, in reference to his toad summons and a variety of toad-related techniques, and "The Village Madness".
* RelegatedMentor: He was one for the Ame Orphans. The Three Great Shinobi found the orphans at the end of the 2nd Shinobi World War, and he decided to stay with them. He ended up becoming their teacher and after 3 years he felt they could take care of themselves and make a difference in their village. Unfortunately, it didn't work out the way he had hoped...
* RemovedAchillesHeel: Typically, in order to gather enough Natural Energy to enter and maintain Sage Mode, Jiraiya needs to stand still. He can bypass this by summoning Fukasaku and Shima and have them gather Natural Energy for him via the Sage Art: Amphibian Technique.
* RenownedSelectiveMentor: Fits this trope to a T. He only had two groups of students before Naruto, and in both cases one of them was an insanely gifted shinobi who became a legend. He chose to train Naruto become he reminded him of the Fourth Hokage, his previous student and Naruto's father.
* {{Retcon}}: While many characters were subject to this, Jiraiya's was particularly notable considering his relationship with Naruto would be put in a different light. In particular, before it was revealed Jiraiya was Naruto's godfather, Jiraiya would shamelessly and lecherously check out Naruto's Sexy Jutsu (in the manga, he even says that Naruto's form is exactly the girl he'd like), which makes things even creepier. The revelation also meant Jiraiya did not check in at all on Naruto for the first ''twelve'' years of his life, yet this is at no point addressed beyond [[{{Handwave}} keeping tabs on the Leaf's enemies, in particular being one of the only people able to monitor Orochimaru and the Akaksuki.]] The latter of which ultimately falls flat when Jiraiya was not aware about the alliance between Suna and Orochimaru, or the plan to invade via the Chunin Exams, which would have been essential to know to defend against.
* RetiredBadass: Subverted. He seems to be just goofing off and ignoring his responsibilities to go on an endless vacation, but he's actually been keeping tabs on the Leaf's enemies.
* ShipTease: With Tsunade, if only briefly. Tsunade is the only woman Jiraiya has ever truly loved, but it never goes anywhere, as she continued to love only Dan after his death. Even after Jiraiya himself dies, her love for Dan is reaffirmed, with him confirming he is waiting for her in the afterlife, as well as her Infinite Tsukuyomi dream, where her greatest desire is for Dan to be alive and they are still in a relationship.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: When normal training methods for Naruto to draw out the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox weren't working, he pushes Naruto into a giant crevice. If Naruto failed to draw out the chakra in order to summon Gamabunta, he would have died.
* SpectacularSpinning: The [[SwirlyEnergyThingy Rasengan]]. He can make a giant Rasengan in Sage Mode.
* SternTeacher: At some moments, he was this towards Naruto. Such as when he lectured Naruto about being a "fool" trying to save Sasuke. There was also the time while teaching him the Rasengan, he said he wouldn't act as Naruto's parent, but he still showed him affection buying him a popsicle.
* StomachOfHolding: He kept Gerotora, the scroll toad which holds the key to Naruto's Eight Trigrams Seal, in his stomach. Gerotora was instructed to go back to Naruto after Jiraiya's death.
* StrongAndSkilled: Jiraiya is noted to be a strong combatant ''and'' notoriously skilled. Nagato admits that if Jiraiya knew the secret of Pain since the beginning, he likely would have won the battle against him, which owes to the level of strength the Sanin had.
* SummonMagic: Jiraiya is a ninjutsu master, who is famed as the "Toad Sage" because of his affiliation with the toads of Mount Myōboku. This affiliation is most commonly displayed through summoning toads, either to fight alongside him in battle or simply summoning a toad's esophagus to trap a victim and cover an area and restrict any movements within that area.
* SuperMode: Jiraiya was taught how to use senjutsu and enter Sage Mode by Fukasaku, which he can use to increase his speed, durability, and physical strength. He can also use it to empower his other ninjutsu, such as the Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan. Before he can gain these benefits, Jiraiya must merge with Fukasaku and Shima because he does not have mastery of Sage Mode.
* TakeUpMySword: His last action before dying was to leave Naruto a code for how to battle Pain. Naruto continues to honor his memory all the way to the end.
* TeamDad: To Naruto, despite refusing to become Hokage.
* TookALevelInBadass: In his backstory, he was the "loser" of the Three Great Shinobi and was incapable of defeating his friend Orochimaru. In the end, he's one of history's most powerful ninja, which results in him being considered for the position of Hokage (the same position that the Third Hokage was originally considering Orochimaru for) multiple times during his life. Unlike Orochimaru, Jiraiya was never rejected for the position either. He turned it down. Even after his death, his name was still mentioned as a prime candidate for the role, indicating the massive level of respect he'd gained in the village over the years, not only in the eyes of his teacher but the village and the higher-ups in the Land of Fire as well. At the very end, Obito realizes that Jiraiya is truly the one who won the war as it was his ideals Naruto and Nagato followed at the end.
* TragicHero: Always failed to save the ones he loved and believed himself to be a worthless good-for-nothing...until the very end when he achieves an end "just barely glorious but glorious indeed."
%%%* TricksterMentor: To Naruto.
* Tritagonist: Shares this role with Itachi, as the most influential person to Naruto.
* UndyingLoyalty: Although he left Konoha for many years, Jiraiya was still loyal to his village. When Konoha found itself in need of a new Hokage after the Third Hokage's death, Jiraiya volunteered to look for Tsunade so that she could be the Fifth Hokage, after turning down the position himself. His reason for refusing the position was, among other things, that he felt unworthy to take the role, since he had failed to save either of the previous Hokage from dying, or stop Orochimaru from turning traitor, as well as him having to conduct more "research". After he found Tsunade and began to suspect that she might be helping Orochimaru, he made it clear that he would kill her if she betrayed the village, proof of his loyalty to Konoha. However, once it became clear that Tsunade was still loyal to Konoha, and later accepted the title of Hokage, Jiraiya served as her most trusted adviser, loyal confidant, and a spy into the dealings of Akatsuki and Konoha's enemies.
* UnrequitedLoveLastsForever: The only woman he had true feelings for was Tsunade, his childhood teammate. However, she was interested in another shinobi (Dan) and never got over him after his death, as shown in her interaction with the Edo Tensei-Dan and her Infinite Tsukuyomi dream.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: His desire to give Sasuke a shot at killing Itachi in the hotel is understandable, but it takes all of three seconds for it to become apparent that he's absolutely no match for his older brother. It still takes Jiraiya at least another five minutes, many broken bones, and a vicious [MindRape to actually intervene. In fact, it's very possible that the only reason Itachi even resorted to Tsukuyomi is that he was waiting for Jiraiya to give him the excuse to flee, and nothing else was making him act. This loss was one of the biggest reasons for Sasuke's defection.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: His Sage Mode form makes him more toad-like in appearances, such as warts and webbed hands and feet; although his frog-like legs enable him to jump better, he dislikes the overall appearance because he believes women will find it unattractive.
* WalkingTheEarth: After hearing the elder toad sage's prediction, he dedicated his life to travelling the world and meeting people along with keeping an eye on Orochimaru and Akatsuki for Konoha. His experiences meeting all kinds of different people contributed to him figuring out Pain's true identity, as the Six Paths were all people he met during his travels.
* WarriorPoet: A powerful and renowned Shinobi of the Leaf Village with a passion for writing and a tendency to talk about his desires for world peace and acknowledging the flaws of the Shinobi World.
* WartsAndAll: Naruto loves him like family and admires him more than anyone else but still usually refers to him as "Pervy Sage" ("Ero-Sennin").
* WideEyedIdealist: He hoped the world would one day obtain peace, but even he admitted he didn't have an answer for the cycle of hatred.
* TheWorfEffect: He's hyped up to be very strong, one of the legendary Sannin that the Akatsuki hesitate to fight. The first hint given about the magnitude of his badasstitude was that Itachi and Kisame tucked their tails between their legs and ran for it when he showed up to fight. However, we actually never see him win a fight, and even in his {{Backstory}}, we're only told about his ''failures'' (couldn't defeat Hanzou, was defeated by Orochimaru when he left the Leaf) rather than his victories. This serves to set a benchmark of just ''how'' powerful his opponents are that someone like him would lose to them.
** Itachi and Kisame escape from him by using Amaterasu, which demonstrates its power. They didn't even try to fight him and Kisame said that he was way above their weight class.
** Hanzou is considered to be a monster of a ninja based on how he could win against all three Sannin.
** Orochimaru couldn't ''scratch'' Naruto in Four-Tails Form (though his body begins rejecting him before the fight can reach a conclusion), while Jiraiya took him down during a previous incident (though nearly died himself doing so, and he was also holding back because he was afraid of accidentally killing or crippling Naruto).
** That he would lose a close-fight with Pain (that Nagato admitted he won only because Jiraiya didn't know how the Six Paths of Pain worked) sets the stage for Pain to "[[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown fight]]" '''All of Konoha's forces, the Toad Tribe, Kyuubi, and Naruto'''). This is what established his reputation with fans.
* WorfHadTheFlu: During his main story line fight with Orochimaru, he was poisoned beforehand and could scarcely throw a kunai straight.
* WorldsStrongestMan: For a time he held this title. He was flat out said to be the only one strong enough to defeat Orochimaru during his invasion by Ebisu. Itachi AND Kisame both considered him too risky to fight even with ''both'' of them against him (this is huge since, despite Itachi's allegiance, it's possible he would ''kill'' Konoha shinobi to keep his cover if he had to, but he still noted that against Jiraiya they had, at best, a 50% chance of even getting a mutual kill), with Kisame even saying he was on an entirely another level. Not only that, he defeated Naruto's Four-Tailed Version 2 form ''within base'' (though he did nearly die doing so), note Orochimaru couldn't do ''anything'' to Naruto in that form (though the fight had no conclusion). And then his student Nagato considered him strong enough that he would not have been able to win if Jiraiya had known his secret.
* WouldHitAGirl: Despite his feelings for her, Jiraiya had no problem threatening to kill Tsunade if she betrayed Konoha.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Minato tells him this when Jiraiya considers writing his book, and by extension, much of his life, to be a waste of his time.

Tsunade is a veteran HardDrinkingPartyGirl and gambler, although her lack of luck at the latter, which earned her the nickname "The Legendary Sucker", is almost as famous as her [[SuperStrength fighting skill]] and [[TheMedic miraculous healing abilities]]. Tsunade, whose grandfather was the First Hokage (therefore, the elders refer to her as "Tsunade-hime" aka "Princess Tsunade"), became jaded and disillusioned regarding the village when both her younger brother Nawaki and her fiancé Dan were killed during the wars which crisscrossed the ''Naruto'' world prior to the series. She turned her back on the village and sought her own amusements, with her fiancee's niece Shizune and her pet pig Tonton as her only companions.

She first appears in the Search for Tsunade arc, when Jiraiya and Naruto are seeking her to offer her the position of the Fifth Hokage. She initially refuses, and bets Naruto her treasured necklace that he won't be able to master the Rasengan in three days. Orochimaru also seeks her out during this time, wanting her to heal the crippling injuries he sustained during his fight with the Third Hokage and offering to revive her brother and fiancee in exchange. After seeing Naruto successfully perform the Rasengan for the first time, a three-way battle ensues in which Jiraiya and Tsunade team up to defeat Orochimaru. Tsunade then returns to Konoha and accepts the position of the Fifth Hokage.

Tsunade has SuperStrength and the ability to concentrate chakra in her limbs, further increasing the power of her strikes. She is widely considered the greatest medical ninja in the world, and can [[CombatMedic hit vital points with precision or completely heal herself in midfight]]. She also uses a transformation jutsu to keep her appearance eternally young, although that's more for the sake of her vanity than any strategic purpose. It's still notable as a very advanced form of transformation, as she maintains it regardless of whether she is asleep or even knocked unconscious (something that undoes most transformations), it only coming undone if she is extremely low on chakra.

In ''Shippuden'', Tsunade mostly plays a support role, assigning missions and providing exposition. She's also come under attack from various militaristic factions in Konoha itself. She is confronted by Pain's Deva Path, but he decides to run away... but not before nuking Konoha. After the Shinra Tensei, she uses a great deal of chakra to save those that she can and heal people, but this has the side effect of wearing off her transformation and putting her into a coma, causing the position of Sixth Hokage to go to Danzo (pending approval by the village jonins), however she later woke up from the said coma and showed herself to be critical about the decision to send Naruto and Killer Bee into hiding instead of trusting their aid in the war. However, after escaping, both Naruto and Bee eventually manage to win over the other Kage's trust with their resolve.

She later joins the rest of the Kage in fighting a resurrected Madara Uchiha but, despite their valiant efforts, were all defeated (though Tsunade manages to save their lives). A resurrected Orochimaru later helps her back up and together they go on to confront the Ten-Tails and Madara once again. After being caught in the Infinite Tsukiyomi, she, along with the other four Kage, faced the threat of death from Sasuke but were ultimately saved by Naruto. Shortly afterwards, she steps down from the Hokage position to give the mantle to Kakashi before going on to retirement.

->Her hobby is gambling.
->Favorite phrase: "One grab, a thousand gold" referring to getting rich without much effort.
----
* TheAce: Tsunade is the most well regarded and famous Medic Nin and has been dubbed, "The World's Most Beautiful and Strongest Woman".
-->'''Amai, medic ninja of the Hidden Cloud''': Karai, we brought the best medical ninja in the world! You're going to be alright!
* ActionGirl: She's one of the most skilled ninjas in the series and while she doesn't have a huge win streak due to her focus on being TheMedic she's still a capable fighter.
* ACupAngst: During her teenage years. Jiraiya said she had a chest like a cutting board. She didn't take it well.
* AdaptedOut: Of the first live theater adaptation, though she does appear in the second.
* AffectionateNickname:
** Naruto calls her Grandma Tsunade. It becomes funny as we find out that they are both related through the Uzumaki clan. She is Naruto's cousin of some variety.
** Her grandfather Hashirama calls her "Tsuna".
* AfraidOfBlood: Initially. Naruto helps her get over it. It was because her boyfriend was killed, and she couldn't heal him.
* AllAmazonsWantHercules: After being trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Tsunade envisions an idealised reality where Dan is still alive. Conspicuously, he's Hokage instead of Tsunade.
* AnimalMotifs: Slugs, owing to her ability to summon Katsuyu (though that's where the motif ends).
* BadassBookworm: She's the physically strongest of the Three and no slouch in the brains department either (though not as smart as Orochimaru).
* BadassPacifist: Tsunade definitely has the power and combat skills to be Hokage but it is in her philosophy as a [[TheMedic medical ninja]] that she not enter combat unless absolutely necessary lest someone tries to ShootTheMedicFirst. There's one exception to her rule: the medic can enter battle at will if she or he has mastered her HealingFactor technique (something only she and Sakura have succeeded at, so far).
* BadassTeacher: She trained Shizune and Sakura Haruno, among others, in the art of medical ninjutsu.
* BareFistedMonk: Her punches are enough to [[OneHitKill kill anything]] that isn't an Edo Tensei immortal zombie, but even '''Madara''' was worried about being hit by that.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: When Jiraiya goes off to face Pain in Amegakure, she bets against him, thinking he will die, in hopes that her bad luck will ensure that he'll live. Unfortunately, this is one of the few occasions where her bet won out.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Zigzagged. In terms of combat, she takes a good amount of damage during her fights and has the battle damage to show it. But in terms of her general appearance, she is always seen in her young age despite being in her 50s even 10 years into the future. Moreover, whenever she grows old due to lack of chakra, her face is always obscured until she is healed at which point she innately returns to her youthful self once more.
* BigDamnHeroes: Arrives with the other Kages and proceeds to kick ''Madara's'' ass.
* TheBigGal: ...Kind of. She's a mixture of the third and the fifth, but she fits this role effectively well with her fighting style. She only has to [[OneHitKill hit you once to kill]] and she's nearly immortal.
* BigGood: After Hiruzen's death in the third arc, Tsunade takes up his position as Hokage. Although her reign is short (only four years), she is Konoha's leader for the majority of the series. She relinquishes her position in the second-to-last chapter, around fifteen arcs later.
* BirdsOfAFeather: In Chapter 160, she recognizes her similarities to her lover Dan when he agrees with her desire to have at least one medical ninja in every unit so that there's a better chance of surviving a mission or even a war. Also, both have a deceased younger sibling whom they loved dearly--for her, it was her brother Nawaki; for him, it was his unnamed sister.
* BrilliantButLazy: She'd rather laze about, but is forced to take action to maintain the village's safety. Must be why she's perpetually angry all the time.
* BrokenAce: Lost her only sibling to war. She was unable to save her fiancé's life despite her prowess, and developed a fear of blood ever since. She then spent years away from her home (along with Shizune and Tonton), gambling and drinking. Only learned of her master's passing straight from the mouth of her fellow student-turned-traitor who did the deed. Reconciled with her other fellow student, only to later have him die on her watch unable to do anything to help him.
* BrokenBird: Lost the love of her life and her brother to battle. Orochimaru attempts to use this to his advantage when attempting to have her heal his arms by promising to resurrect them. She gets better upon reconciling with her old friend Jiraiya and meeting Naruto, but nearly spins off it again when Jiraiya dies.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Tsunade likes to drink and gamble, hates paperwork to a degree most people would reserve for their worst enemy, and is a bit of a VainSorceress but also a competent leader as well as a kickass medic and fighter
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She's regarded as the most beautiful Kunoichi. [[SarcasmMode Who knows why?]]
* BoringButPractical: Tsunade's SuperStrength and medical ninjutsu give her the most raw physical power and regenerative ability in the series, but, conversely, significantly less flash than the techniques of other high-ranking ninja.
* BornUnlucky: To put it bluntly, her luck is absolute crap, to the point that she became known as "The Legendary Sucker" for basically never winning at gambling. Then there's the fact that so many people close to her have died...
* CantHoldHerLiquor: She gets drunk easily.
* CartwrightCurse: She sure seems to have bad luck with the men she likes...
* CastFromLifespan: Her Mitotic Regeneration technique uses the chakra stored in her forehead to heal all her wounds, but it shortens her life. The exact effect this has on her is not greatly explored. [[spoiler:She's still alive in the series epilogue (when she'd be in her 70s) and there's no indication at all that she's in poor health. Seeing as her grandmother was from the Uzumaki clan (who have long lifespans) the difference probably averages out. However, immediately after the War she had to retire from the position of Hokage; whether this was because she got tired of wars or because she no longer had the stamina necessary to protect the Hidden Leaf is not explained.]]
* CloseRangeCombatant: Be it with taijutsu or [[DeadlyDoctor medical techniques]]. She apparently knows multiple elemental ninjutsu, but that's an InformedAbility.
* TheCoatsAreOff: She always wears a green coat with the kanji for "Gamble" written in the back. Well, ''almost'' always. After she decides she's going to pulverize Orochimaru and Kabuto, she takes off her coat and drops it on the ground. She discards it again[[note]]Shizune had covered her with it during her phobia-induced BSOD[[/note]] when she rushes to heal the critically wounded Naruto. During the battle of the Five Kage against Madara, her coat gets shredded/discarded off-screen.
* CombatMedic: The best in the world, her ability as a very experienced medical ninja while also being able to put up an excellent fight which makes her rather valuable as an ally.
* CombatStilettos: Sports heels even when kicking ass.
* ConvenientComa: Goes into one after the Pain invasion arc and is out of it within weeks.
* CoolBigSis: Was a caring big sister to her brother when he was alive.
* CurbStompBattle: She literally defeats Naruto using only one finger.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Fiery blonde hair and eyes.
* CynicismCatalyst: Not her little brother, but her fiancée. Dan's death turns her into a cynic for whom "''Only fools want to be Hokages''". Luckily, Naruto manages to undo it.
--> '''Tsunade:''' One of the Legendary Three Great Shinobi taking on a snot-nosed genin… I oughta be ashamed of myself.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: Tsunade's regeneration jutsu [[CastFromLifespan shortens her lifespan]] as well.
* DeadlyDoctor: Uses less combative medical techniques than Kabuto but is fully capable of causing harm with her medical abilities.
* DeadpanSnarker: Quite the one with the quips.
* {{Determinator}}: She's been torn in half and dying? That's not important enough to stop her from summoning Katsuyu and using her remaining strength to save the other Kage from dying before giving any attention to her own state.
* DudeMagnet: Heavily implied given her being called the "world's most beautiful woman".
* DoomMagnet: Many of the people closest to her have died, between her fiancé, her little brother, her mentor, and [[spoiler:her closest friend, Jiraiya]]. As such, she is initially reluctant to get close to anyone except Shizune, especially when Naruto's goal painfully reminds her of Dan and Nawaki's own dreams.
* EmbarrassingNickname: According to Jiraiya, she's widely known as the Legendary Sucker thanks to her awfully bad luck at gambling.
* FailureKnight: A considerable one much to her shame. Couldn't save her brother from dying in battle. Couldn't save Dan, despite her skills and best efforts. Couldn't save her mentor because she was busy away from the village gambling and drinking from having reached her DespairEventHorizon. Couldn't save Jiraiya from being killed by Pain after sending him on the mission. Couldn't save her village from being destroyed by Pain in retaliation. The list just goes on with her.
* FingerPokeOfDoom: Bets she can beat Naruto with one finger [[SuperStrength and she does.]]
* TheGamblingAddict: Her quirk. It's apparently her grandfather Hashirama's fault.
* GenerationXerox: She did train Sakura to become a HotBlooded CombatMedic after all.
* GenreSavvy: She shows shades in this in thinking that the Shonen Protagonist couldn't possibly lose and has faith that he'll be able to not be killed or captured in any circumstance. She also states that the younger generation will eventually become stronger than theirs. Naturally, the other characters are convinced she's [[{{Deconstruction}} nuts and reckless]].
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: Tsunade is able to regenerate any wound she receives after releasing her [[CastFromLifespan Yin Seal]] causing her reputation as ageless and immortal in battle.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: Courtesy of Madara. She's gotten better with a bit of help from Katsuyu and Karin.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: While she's extremely stern and irritable at times, she cares deeply about the safety of her village and those closest to her and is willing to die for them.
* HairTriggerTemper: Do '''whatever''' it takes to not get on her bad side.
* HealingFactor: When the seal on her forehead is released, she can instantly recover from any lethal wound.
* HerHeartWillGoOn: She loved Dan, even after he died. Even Jiraiya was unable to win her affections before his death, which is confirmed when she reunites with the reincarnated Dan and they reaffirm their love for each other. Despite that, she still soldiers on, protecting Konoha like they wanted to and trying to promote peace. Her decision to become Hokage is, in a way, fulfilling the dream both Dan and Nawaki had in their stead.
* HeroicFatigue: She exerts so much chakra to help the villagers during Nagato's invasion that she slips into a coma, only waking up after the Fourth Ninja World War is declared.
* HeroicResolve: She so desperately wants to save the people of the Leaf Village after the attack that she ends up overexerting herself into a coma.
* HeroicSecondWind: Tsunade's Yin Seal on her forehead functions as one of these, it has a constant storage of chakra built up in it which she can release to fuel her HealingFactor. This earned her reputation as immortal in battle.
* HospitalHottie: She is widely considered the greatest medical ninja in the world and the most beautiful female ninja. Helps to be the bustiest woman in series.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: She was delivering a KirkSummation and [[ShutUpHannibal tons of asskicking]] to the revived Madara Uchiha, (who was continuously berating her for [[NeverASelfMadeWoman never getting near the level of her grandfather Hashirama]]) until he got annoyed enough to drive a [[HardLight Susanoo Blade]] through her. And [[GoodThingYouCanHeal she still survived it]], snapped the blade in half and [[ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks threw it at him]].
* {{Hypocrite}}: At least a little bit, when she tells Shikamaru to simply learn to live with Asuma's death, when she dropped off the radar for years, after Dan died, and spent the time drinking and gambling.
* ImplacableWoman: Thanks to her seal, she will always get back up.
* InformedFlaw: Her Mitotic Regeneration technique supposedly shortens her lifespan. [[spoiler: However, she's still alive in the series epilogue, when she'd be around 70 and there's no indication that she's in poor health.]] Then again, her grandmother ''was'' an Uzumaki (who are known for having strong life forces).
* InterfaceScrew: Her Important Body Points Disturbance inflicts this on opponents, using chakra to scramble the electrical signals the brain uses to control the limbs.
* IronicEcho: When Jiraiya seeks her out and tries to get her to take the Hokage position, she badmouths it, calling it a "fool's goal". Later in her fight against Orochimaru, he says the same thing much to Tsunade's horror. This is one of the main factors that gets her to take the position.
* {{Irony}}:
** She has a massive losing streak when she gambles, but when she does win, it means something bad is about to happen.
** The first two people she gave her necklace to dreamed of becoming Hokage, only to die tragically not long after. In hindsight, the necklace kept going back to her because ''she'' was the one meant to become Hokage, not them.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Brash, rude, and loud. With a kind and soft heart.
* {{Kevlard}}: A variant. When Kabuto's strike to her chest failed to reach her heart, he wondered if this trope is in play thanks to the amount of adipose tissue.
* LadyDrunk: Previous to accepting the position of Hokage, she was constantly in varying states of intoxication. And occasionally afterwards.
* LastOfHisKind: After her brother died, she is the last surviving remnant of the Senju clan (if one doesn't count their offshoot, the Uzumaki clan), although she no longer carries their name (which might indicate that Hashirama was her maternal grandfather).
* LongLived: A subversion. Tsunade's Uzumaki bloodline naturally gifts her with a long life. However, her repeated usage of the regeneration technique has considerably shortened her lifespan and it's highly implied that she will live an average man's life, if not shorter, since her real appearance looks twenty years older than her current age.
* LustObject: When they were younger, Jiraiya totally lusted after her. Impressing her and gaining her affection was his initial motivation as a ninja.
* MamaBear: She becomes this for the village after she becomes the Fifth Hokage, as parental devotion is expected of a Hokage.
* MarkedChange: When she uses her Strength of a Hundred technique, black lines trace her face and the rest of her body. .
* MasterPoisoner: Jiraiya touts her as the only person in the world who can spike a ninja's drink without their knowledge.
* MightyGlacier: Can literally pulverize any opponent if she manages to touch him/her. Unfortunately, she's not focused on speed attacks, but on avoiding the blows of her enemies, demonstrating the limitations of this character type. When in her SuperMode however, she can simply tank a hit from an enemy to get within melee range and not bother with dodging.
* AMotherToHerMen: Eventually develops a maternal relationship with Konoha, especially to Naruto and Sakura; the former reminds her of her younger brother and being a distant relative via the Uzumaki clan and the later becomes her apprentice (out of two).
* TheMourningAfter: Tsunade never completely moves on from Dan Kato and has not made any attempt at another relationship by the end of the series.
* MsFanservice: Serves this for this series. She is very well endowed and beautiful.
* NervousTics: She tends to bite her thumb when either thinking about something serious or stressed.
* NeverMessWithGranny: She may be over fifty years old, but don't underestimate her. Orochimaru learned this the hard way.
-->'''Tsunade:''' Why am I putting my life on the line? Because now... I am the Fifth Hokage of Konohagakure!
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Averted. Naruto accuses her of this, saying that she should have never sent Jiraiya on the mission to track down Pain, which she can't verbally disagree with- however, not only was Jiraiya capable of escaping Pain had he not wanted to confirm something he was almost certain about, this would lead to learning valuable information to deal with Pain's invasion.
* NormallyIWouldBeDeadNow: After Madara gets bored fighting the Kages and buggers off, it's revealed that Tsunade has been bisected by a giant tree branch. She maintains consciousness long enough to summon Katsuyu, who in turn keeps her alive long enough for Team Taka to arrive and finish healing her.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: Orochimaru offers to resurrect both her dead younger brother and her boyfriend if she'll heal his arms, which were rendered useless due to the Third Hokage's final attack sealing them. She seemed like she would take him up on the offer. But knowing that he's a liar, and through Naruto remembering the promises and dreams of her two departed loved ones of becoming Hokage and protecting the people they care about, she instead uses the opportunity to try to kill Orochimaru. Ironically, Orochimaru notes he did intend to keep his word, but recognizes Tsunade won't agree regardless.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Both played straight and [[InvertedTrope inverted]]. She uses a advanced form of the Transformation jutsu to retain the body she had in her 20's or 30's at all times, keeping it even when she is asleep or unconscious. The transformaiton only comes undone when she is very low on chakra, which reveals that her natural body looks much ''older'' than she is (like she was in her 70's or 80's -- probably because of her use of Creation Rebirth which shortens her lifespan whenever she uses it). She is actually in her 50s. Her look in the DistantFinale is one of the most youthful she sports for all the series, while she's probably over 60 by then.
* PenPushingPresident: One of the least pleasant aspects of her job as Hokage is paperwork. The morning Sasuke disappears, she is actually caught sleeping on her parchments.
* ProfessionalGambler: She actually has very bad luck.
* PromotionToParent: Took care (if one can really say that) of Shizune, her fiance's orphaned niece, after his death. Although it would be more accurate to say it's ''Shizune'' who tried her best to take care of the broken, alcoholic and compulsively gambling Tsunade...
* PowerTattoo: The Yin Seal on her forehead gives a large boost of chakra when released.
* ProudBeauty: She's quite prideful of her looks, claims her busty figure was a blessing from the heavens, and is quick to resort to any criticism of her appearance with violence. That she perfected the Transformation jutsu to enable her to have the body she had in her prime at all times is also an implication of this.
* PyrrhicVictory: The only times she ever wins at gambling is before something terrible happens. Therefore, whenever she actually wins she's too busy waiting for the other shoe to drop to enjoy the victory.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Despite her bad temper, Tsunade is one of the most reasonable and sensible Kage in Konoha's history, if not ''Naruto's'' world as a whole. She's not only willing to form treaties when Konoha is recovering from a terrorist attack, she manages and instructs the Shinobi under her care to a particularly good degree. She's also willing to put her faith in other people, even if she's unsure about the outcome.
* RedBaron: The Legendary Sucker, in reference to her horrible luck, and the Slug Princess, likely in reference to her summoning contract with Katsuyu.
* RetiredBadass: She had retired for many years and was out of practice when she went back into combat (see WorfHadTheFlu). [[spoiler:After the re-sealing of Kaguya, she retires again, this time from being Hokage entirely, giving the job to Kakashi]].
* RunningGag: Destroying her desk in a fit of rage.
* ShipTease: With Jiraiya. However, it never went anywhere, as she remained in love with Dan even after his death. There's a ''bit'' of insinuation later in the series that she's slowly warming up to Jiraiya being her SecondLove, but this is immediately cut off by him perishing in battle against Pain not long after.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Tsunade fell in love with [[NiceGuy Dan]] because of his desire to become Hokage in order to protect the villagers. She continues to love him and reaffirms it when she meets with his spirit, explaining how she wants to live his dreams. Dan assures her that she is his real dream.
* SinsOfTheFather: She is a believer of this concerning [[spoiler:Orochimaru and his "son" Mitsuki, as she believes the latter has the potential to be just as dangerous as his "parent"]].
* TheSmartGirl: Though it's not commonly exploited like Shikamaru or his father, she does have a great deal of intelligence, as might be expected from the world's foremost medical expert.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: She's the only woman in the Sannin. She's also the first and only woman to become Hokage.
* StarCrossedLovers: Her marriage with Dan never came to fruition, but when she meets with his spirit they reaffirm their love for each other. Dan tells her he will continue to wait for her in the afterlife, that she is his true dream, but wants her to live out her life, telling her not to join him "too quickly."
* SternTeacher: She literally did not pull her punches when training Sakura. As she explained, a medic ninja's most important ability is ''not'' their ability to heal but their ability to ''dodge''. So she used enough power to shatter stone during their sparing matches. By the end of the time-skip, Sakura was able to fight a member of Akatsuki who used tricky puppets and poison blades, and also heal any number of injuries. It's further emphasized in the ''Boruto'' series, where Sakura brings up how it wasn't unusual for her to get broken bones when being trained by Tsunade.
* SuperMode: When she fully accesses the power of the seal on her forehead she enters one of these, markings from the seal extending over her whole body, granting her even more superhuman strength than usual as well as healing her so quickly and completely (and automatically) that she can keep fighting no matter how serious a wound she takes so long as she has chakra left (notably she has multiple Susanoo swords stuck in her during part of her fight with Madara and yet keeps going like it's not effecting her). It has been variously translated Ninja Art: Mitotic Regeneration: One Hundred Healings, Mitotic Regeneration: The Hundred Healings and Ninja Art Creation Rebirth — Strength of a Hundred Technique. Like most techniques the mode has a definite chakra limit, and unless she is given extra chakra after it runs out she will become largely helpless for some time once that limit is reached.
* SuperStrength: In addition to possessing generic SuperStrength, she can further increase the power of her punches thanks to impossibly precise chakra control. She's even stronger than [[LightningBruiser A the Raikage]] and can shatter ''Madara's'' [[InstantArmor Susano'o]] with a single punch (if after activating her SuperMode).
* TakeThatKiss: A variation of this happens during her second "[[CurbStompBattle fight]]" with Naruto. After he questions if she is really qualified to be Hokage, she once again easily defeats him using only a single finger again. But, right when Naruto expects her to [[FingerPokeOfDoom flick his forehead again]] like last time and closes his eyes waiting for it, she instead pulls away and instead kisses his forehead, to reward his efforts and symbolize her faith in him.
* TeamMom: After she becomes the Fifth Hokage, she become the mother-figure the village as a whole looks to. She is responsible for nurturing several of the village's ninja, such as Naruto and Sakura.
* TookALevelInIdealism: The deaths of Nawaki and Dan made her give up on the belief that dreams come true and believe that being the Hokage is a "fool's job". Meeting [[MagneticHero Naruto]] forces her to question her cynicism, leading to her not only becoming the Fifth Hokage, but also helping the dreams of others come true (i.e., when Rock Lee tells her he dreams of being a ninja despite knowing he may die trying, she does not argue his decision and, in the anime, does all that she can to ensure he survives).
* TragicKeepsake: Her pendant used to belong to her brother before he was killed on a mission. Shizune noted that she never ever pawned it, no matter how in debt she was.
* {{Tsundere}}: As a grown up, more furious and broken version of Sakura, she is definitely tsun-tsun around half the time, yet the kindness is there and seen in the other half.
* VainSorceress: She's very vain, using ninjutsu to appear young even though she is as old as Jiraya. However, she is also benevolent if short-tempered.
* VitriolicBestBuds: She's constantly angry with Jiraiya's perversion, yet it's clearly seen that they care for each other. When he's killed by Pain, she's shaken to the core.
* WeakButSkilled: For a given measure of weak, Tsunade would be one of the weakest Hokage, just above Kakashi and Minato in terms of offensive capabilities, but her medical jutsus and strength are absolutely nothing to scoff at, as even [[spoiler: Madara]] is surprised at her power, it actually makes her near indispensible in a fight.
* WorfHadTheFlu: When she's introduced she's been retired for many years and is out of practice due to spending her years drinking and gambling, as Kabuto and Orochimaru observe. Additionally, she never uses her Strength of a Hundred technique at the time, which gives her the power to surprise Madara who was just playing around when he otherwise curbstomped the other four Kages.
* WorldsMostBeautifulWoman: Shikamaru's father refers to her as "the [[WorldsStrongestWoman strongest]] and most beautiful of all kunoichi."
* WorldsStrongestWoman: Shikamaru's father refers to her as "the strongest and [[WorldsMostBeautifulWoman most beautiful]] of all kunoichi." Even after she retires, no one else has been called this InUniverse nor by Kishimoto.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Without the jutsu to make her look younger, Tsunade looks about twenty years older than she is, thanks to her repeated usage of Mitotic Regeneration.

->''If you're not happy on what you have now… you can just find new things to find up. …You see, I also want to find who I really am. That's why I'm collecting a bit of everything.''

The ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' series' first BigBad, but he becomes an uneasy ally in ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' as Mitsuki's parent, Orochimaru wants to be the most powerful shinobi who ever lived, and figures he can accomplish this by mastering every jutsu ever devised. However, a single human lifespan is far too short to learn every jutsu, so he also needs immortality as part of the bargain. To that end, Orochimaru has experimented with various scientific and magical methods of extending his own lifespan, but until he finds a perfect method, he opts to go with the riskier and less reliable GrandTheftMe method of immortality, switching his body for a younger one every few years. His desire to gain the body of an Uchiha (whose unique Sharingan would allow him to master jutsu much more quickly) is the driving force behind most of the events of the first series.

Orochimaru was initially trained by the Third Hokage along with Jiraiya and Tsunade and was the most naturally talented of the three. The Third initially hoped that Orochimaru would become his successor, but as Orochimaru's selfishness and lust for power grew and made him go off the deep end, that forced him to select one of Jiraiya's students instead. While in the village, Orochimaru experimented extensively on its inhabitants, including his own students, hoping to develop new routes to power. He applied for the position of Fourth Hokage, hoping it would give him more leeway in this department, and when he was turned down, decided the village had offered him all it could and defected... shortly after being exposed as a SerialKiller who had been abducting innocents, and pro ninja, for lethal experiments. His closest friend Jiraiya chased him down and tried to reason with him, but Orochimaru laughed in his face.

From there, Orochimaru joined the criminal organization Akatsuki and tried to steal the body of Itachi Uchiha, and when that failed, conquered the Land of Rice Fields to give him a base of operations for his activities and a ready supply of test subjects, changing its name to the Land of Sound in the process. Then, during the actual series, Orochimaru destroyed Sasuke's confidence during the Chuunin exams and tried to bait him into betraying the village with promises of new and unlimited power, tricked the Sand Village into attacking Konoha, and killed his old mentor the Third Hokage, desecrating the graves of the First and Second and sacrificing his own proteges to do so. He treats his followers like pawns and is unconcerned when they die.

Orochimaru's original intention was to take Sasuke's body by the end of the first series, but Konoha's interference during the Sasuke Retrieval arc forced him to switch with some random prisoner instead. Since he has to wait three years before he can switch again, he decides to train Sasuke during the TimeSkip instead.

In ''Shippuden'', Orochimaru's most recent body has all but given out on him, but he's still tough enough to tangle with Naruto's [[FourIsDeath Four-tailed]] [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Fox form]] during the second arc. Later, Sasuke attacks him while he's bedridden. Orochimaru reveals his true form (a snake made out of a bunch of smaller snakes) and tries to take Sasuke's body by force, but is defeated offscreen. Fragments of his body are integrated into the bodies of both his right-hand man Kabuto and Sasuke himself. The portion of his body absorbed by Sasuke shows up in the fight with Itachi, where Sasuke, exhausted, lacks the chakra needed to suppress him. Orochimaru doesn't contribute much to the fight and is promptly flattened by Susanoo, the third technique of the Mangekyo Sharingan, trapping him in an endless dream state that cannot be undone or escaped from while also absorbing his body, effectively killing that part of him. Using Anko's Cursed Seal of Heaven and a chunk of Sage Mode Kabuto's flesh, Sasuke resurrects Orochimaru, who strips Kabuto of his part of the Snake Sanin and agrees to help Sasuke.

He later proves instrumental in driving the outcome of the war towards the Alliance's favor when he helps Sasuke resurrect the original four Hokage. When questioned why he's doing all this, Orochimaru notes that his way of trying to obtain everything was mistaken and from now on wants to see what Sasuke is going to do. He also admits that he sees changing as the only way for him to survive, as his previous way of living led to defeat after defeat.

Years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Orochimaru and the rest of Team Taka go back to their regular hideout to continue their usual activities (to a degree, there are no signs of prisons, inhumane experiments, or sacrifices). Naruto and Konoha continue to keep an eye on him but it is unclear how much they do to restrict his activities. He himself thinks he (as well as Kabuto and Sasuke) are allowed to be somewhat free so he could be used later in case a new big crisis like Madara would come and the Ninja World would need him and his strange unorthodox techniques. Various dialog reveals that allowing him to be merely kept under observation was a decision made by the ninja nations as a whole. In ''{{Manga/Boruto}}'' he requests his [[ArtificialHuman laboratory grown]] child, Mitsuki, be educated and trained as a Ninja in Konoha, as Mitsuki had chosen to go there to befriend Boruto Uzumaki.

->His hobby is creating techniques.
->Favorite words: "destroy" and "chaos"
----
* TheAce: A talented shinobi since he was a child, with his skills growing ever since. Developed into an amazing scientist.
* AdaptationDeviation: His {{Kusanagi}} blade is given a different appearance in the anime, looking much more accurate to what its Japanese name implies, where, in the manga, it’s just a katana.
* AdaptationalComicRelief: In ''Manga/RockLeesSpringtimeOfYouth'', he's much more buffonish and borderline HarmlessVillain compared to the main series with Kabuto even lampshades this in one of the story. That said, among many of his ridiculous schemes, he proves himself to be NotSoHarmlessVillain on rare occasions.
* AdaptationalVillainy: As bad as he is in the manga, suffice to say anime filler episodes add considerably to his body count and crimes in general, even having him play a role in things that as far as we know he had nothing to do with in the manga (like the previous jinchuruki of the eight tails going out of control).
* AffablyEvil: [[HazyFeelTurn While his morality is still rather dodgy]] after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Orochimaru is a quite pleasant person to chat with, as it shown with his conversation with [[spoiler:Sasuke and Naruto]], like they're old friends visiting for tea in ''Manga/NarutoGaiden''.
* AffectionateNickname: In ''Naruto Retsuden'', [[spoiler:Himawari]] calls him "Oro-chan".
* AgentPeacock: Kishimoto says that Orochimaru was made flamboyant for him to have a "powerful aura" as a villain.
* AllYourPowersCombined: After he's revived by Sasuke, during the Fourth Great Ninja War, he absorbs his senjutsu chakra from Kabuto, and perhaps along with it the all the kekkei genkai's Kabuto has amassed in his body: Sakon and Ukon's unnamed cells manipulation, Kimimaro's Dead Bone Pulse and Jugo's passive ability to absorb natural energy, along with Karin's Uzumaki lifeforce. Soon after, he uses his Living Corpse Reincarnation on a White Zetsu, and gains Wood Release. Although so far all of them fall under InformedAttribute at best, since he's never shown using any of these abilities nor is he stated to be able to use them (indeed, having been noted explicitly to be unable to use sage mode).
* AmbiguousGender: Downplayed and played with. In the Seventh Hokage Gaiden, [[spoiler:assuming he still uses the Living Corpse Reincarnation (he may not need to anymore since the White Zetsu clone he possessed may function differently), his current host's gender is ambiguous (assuming he is even using a new host) due to its youthful appearance and the fact that he's neatly combed his bangs and tied his hair into a ponytail.]]
** Lampshaded and discussed in ''Boruto''. When Mitsuki asks if Orochimaru is his mother or father, Orochimaru dismisses it as a silly question, stating that it doesn’t matter what he is since at different times in his life his body was that of a man, another time a woman, and still another he was something else entirely (his Zetsu body). To him, all that matters is the core of one’s being. This trope is downplayed and played with though in that not only is Orochimaru always referred to as a male in and out of universe (aside from scenes meant to be jokes), but the context of Mitsuki's question was more about whether as a TrulySingleParent, Orochimaru should be called his mother or his father.
* AmbitionIsEvil: Orochimaru's ambition to have eternal life started out innocently enough but grows and results in his research in forbidden jutsu and experimentation that drove him away from the village which is pretty much the reason why he turned into a BigBad. He eventually mocked the idea of becoming Fourth Hokage and helping the village prosper as those things would become meaningless in the grand scheme of time in his mind.
* AnimalEyes: He has yellow irises with vertically slitted pupils, just one of his snake features.
* AnimalisticAbomination: His true form is a bizarre snake-demon after decades' worth of experimenting on himself and acquiring the Power of the White Snake.
* AnimalMotifs: Orochimaru has always been associated with snakes. [[BodyOfBodies Lots and lots of snakes]].
* ArchEnemy: Orochimaru seems to make it his ''life's work'' to earn the hatred of a significant portion of the cast, from Anko Mitarashi and Hiruzen Sarutobi to Jiraiya, Naruto and Tsunade, and is probably this to the Leaf as a whole given his goal is to wipe it from the face of the Earth and that he topped its Most Wanted List.
* AssholeVictim: Throughout the story, Orochimaru regularly suffers some especially emphasized indignities such as ''dying'' horribly and being subject to a FateWorseThanDeath ''several times over.'' [[JokerImmunity Though they never stick,]] he deserved ''all of it'' for his crimes.
* AssimilationBackfire:
** When Itachi Uchiha first joined Akatsuki, Orochimaru attempted to use Living Corpse Reincarnation on him to get his Sharingan. Itachi used genjutsu to cause the technique to backfire on Orochimaru and nearly killed him, forcing him to defect from Akatsuki.
** When Orochimaru tried to steal Sasuke's body, Sasuke reversed the process and absorbed him instead. He nearly got Sasuke back when the latter used up too much chakra fighting Itachi and allowed Orochimaru to fight his way back to the surface, but Itachi put a stop to that.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: Even before he went all crazy, he was apparently very snake-like. A picture taken of him, Tsunade, and Jiraiya when they were all young showed that yes, Orochimaru ''always'' looked like that.
* AxCrazy: Orochimaru's quest for power and immortality certainly left him unhinged through his greed and complete disregard for life around him. After being humbled by several HumiliationConga experiences, he gradually subverts this trope to closer resemble his previous self.
* BackFromTheDead: With a little help from Sasuke and Juugo. Was anyone surprised?
* BadassBookworm: He is a [[MadScientist mad]] [[ForScience scientist]], after all, as well as a legendary soldier, assassin and spy, and war hero.
* BadassTeacher: He taught Anko Mitarashi (and the other members of Team Orochimaru), Kabuto Yakushi, and Sasuke Uchiha, and is a powerful shinobi.
* BadBoss:
** Pitted the Sound Trio against Sasuke so he could test the latter's power and potential, knowing that Sasuke might cripple or even kill them; sacrificed two of them (and an unknown third) to summon the former Hokages as his enslaved zombie warriors; shrugs off the death of his most fanatical, devoted and powerful follower; teaches his underlings to not give a shit about each other (to the point of potentially killing each other for tactical advantages) gave the Curse Seal to Anko when she was his student, which very nearly killed her; implied to perform all kinds of horrid experiments on his own men, though most of his victims seem to be prisoners.
** Averted with Taka by the time of ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'', given how they are all still working for him and Orochimaru mellowing out.
* TheBadGuyWins: He is this at the end of Part I: Sasuke goes to Orochimaru willingly, just as the latter had planned [[KarmaHoudini This can also be said for Orochimaru of all villains for the entire series:]] Despite his countless atrocities that put even Hidan to shame, his newfound outlook on life and contributions to the Fourth Shinobi War (that he had nothing to do with creating) allows him to live free under supervision. And according to Kishimoto, he succeeded in obtaining immortality.
* BerserkButton: He doesn't appreciate being patronized for any perceived shortcomings on his part. He murders one of his own medics for telling him to continue taking the ineffective pain medication for his sealed arms, threatens Kabuto upon the latter attempting to cheer him up despite the loss of his arms to Sarutobi, and later when the younger man muses that his lord is being impatient waiting for Sasuke to come to them during Kimimaro's battle with Gaara.
* BeyondRedemption: In the past, Jiraiya tried to convince him not to leave the Hidden Leaf Village behind for more power, but the latter rejected his pleas. Since then, he has given up on trying to redeem him since Orochimaru chose to defect of his own will. Ironically, after the former's passing and the latter's return via Cursed Seal, Orochimaru himself decides to change, in his own way, citing that Jiraiya remaining the way he was led to his permanent demise.
* BigBad: His efforts to destroy Konoha and acquire Sasuke's body make him the main antagonist of Part I.
* BigBadEnsemble: With Tobi and Danzo for ''Shippuden'', but fast was thrown under the bus.
* BigBadWannabe: He became one in Part II. In Part I, he's too strong for any of the heroes to defeat, forcing the Third Hokage to sacrifice himself to save the village (which doesn't even kill him entirely). But later it's revealed that he lost to Itachi in the past while trying to claim his body, and in most of the battles after that, he's defeated easily or forced to retreat. This is partly because [[WorfHadtheFlu he wasn't at full strength when he fights]], but it shows that he's lost much of his original threat. This was worst when he fought against Itachi (while fighting Sasuke) in the manga, and was defeated in merely a few pages. By the time he's resurrected, the main characters are so far out of his league that he's content to just observe what happens.
* BlowYouAway: One of the two elemental ninjutsu he's used in the series was wind style.
* BodySurf: He developed a jutsu called Living Corpse Reincarnation, which lets him transfer his soul into a host body, though it comes with at least two caveats: the first being that he has to wait at least three years after using it once before he can use it again (presumably his soul needs time to gather strength to use it) and the second being that [[PossessionBurnout he can wear out a body depending on its strength]] and it will eventually reject him, so the host needs to already be at a certain level of strength to even survive the minimum three years before another transfer. He's used it a grand total of four times, though the third attempt was turned against him by Sasuke.
* BondVillainStupidity: When Orochimaru had the Third Hokage cornered with a kunai and instead of just SLICING HIS HEAD OFF like any smart person, decided to do a huge elaborate drama in which he summoned the Third Hokage's own teachers to kill him, resulting in Orochimaru losing the use of his arms.
* BreathWeapon: Notably unique use of this trope involving launching snakes, swords, and even himself from his throat.
* BrokenAce: His love for obtaining every jutsu sent him into a downward spiral of crime, leading to him defecting the Leaf and transforming into a complete sociopath. The bonds he had with his teammates, teacher, and the village were irrevocably damaged. By the start and end of the series, Orochimaru was a wanted Missing-Nin.
* BrokenPedestal: To the Leaf, once a respected member of the Sannin, now a world-class criminal who ruins everyone's lives for his experiments. He does his share to defeat Obito and Madara, however, claiming he can't let his precious laboratory (meaning, the world) get destroyed.
* BroughtDownToBadass: The Third did this, which remained for the majority of Part I. He got his powers back only to be sealed away twice. He later fixed this by cutting open the death god's stomach, which restored his arms. However, even at his weakest, he remained a dangerous opponent in a fight.
* BullyingADragon: Orochimaru's debut in ''Shippuden'' consisted of him deliberately antagonizing Naruto over Sasuke's defection, which resulted in Naruto drawing on so much of Kurama's chakra that he lapsed into the Version 2 chakra cloak and almost nuked Orochimaru with a Tailed Beast Ball.
* CameBackStrong: His new body after being revived yet again is mostly composed of Hashirama's cells, being a Zetsu clone. One benefit is that his Edo Tensei is powerful enough to restrain even the Second Hokage at near-full strength.
* CantKillYouStillNeedYou: Clearly recognizes certain potential, and won't kill those who are outright useful to him or his goals, even if frustrated and in a YouHaveFailedMe mood. He also believes that this also applies to him as the primary reason he's allowed to be a KarmaHoudini. In ''Boruto'' episode 72, Shikamaru states that Konoha keeps him around in case they need his knowledge to battle the Ōtsutsuki.
* CavalryOfTheDead: During the 4th Shinobi World War, aiding Sasuke's wish to end the war, he uses the Edo Tensei revived Hokages to assist the Shinobi Allied Forces against the overwhelming Ten-Tails.
* CharacterDevelopment: His new watchword. After some humbling losses at the hands of Itachi and Sasuke, he admits that while in the past he wanted to "be the wind that made the windmill move", he finds it more interesting to see where Sasuke's path takes him. When Tsunade observes a change in his attitude, he reasons that everyone changes and that if they don't they die, presenting Jiraiya as an example of this.
* TheChessmaster: He sets out long laid plans that involve using others to ultimately get what he wants. However, it often results in some huge hitches due to unexpected actions.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: In his entire life Orochimaru managed to betray: the Leaf Village (along with a personal betrayal of both his teammates and his mentor); his own student Anko; Akatsuki; the Fourth Kazekage and the entire Hidden Sand Village in general. And this is not to mention many of his subordinates which he used to perform all kinds of horrid experiments to achieve immortality.
* ComplexityAddiction: Quite a bit of his plans are way more complicated than they have any reason to be for the goal he wants. For example, his primary goal in the series is immortality. Near the end of the original series, his Cursed Seals turned out to be {{Soul Jar}}s. Which means he had the means of immortality for decades. Instead, he kept on experimenting trying to find a different, more complex resolution to the problem he already answered. Admittedly this method was less than perfect, as it required both that the people with the curse marks stayed alive and that someone else have the knowledge, means, and desire to revive him as he couldn't do it himself. Played straight with many of his other plans, which Sasuke mocks made it seem like Orochimaru didn't even know what his own goals were anymore.
* ContemplateOurNavels: He sometimes slips into this when he describes why he's seeking immortality.
* CoolSword: The {{Kusanagi}} which is said to be able to [[AbsurdlySharpBlade pierce nearly anything]] as well as extend and float and attack independently of Orochimaru with a special jutsu. Interestingly, it is a straight sword in the anime like it was supposed to be in the legend but is a [[KatanasAreJustBetter katana]] in the manga because EveryJapaneseSwordIsAKatana.
* TheCorrupter: He excels at this, most of his pupils are [[AxCrazy insane and twisted]] due to his influence. He only partially succeeded with Sasuke (enough to make him leave the Leaf, but not sufficiently to make him his pawn).
* CrazyPrepared: His Curse Seals turn out to be {{Soul Jar}}s. ''All'' of them. Not only can he use them to resurrect himself -- though he needs outside help for this -- but they even double as SinisterSurveillance, since he can see and hear everything all of the victims do all the time, allowing him to remain up-to-date with the plot. Presumably, this only works when he is OnlyMostlyDead and not when he is alive and kicking. Sasuke even brought him BackFromTheDead explicitly to help him get to the heart of the KudzuPlot by resurrecting all four past Hokage.
* CreepyChild: Young Orochimaru [[UsedToBeASweetKid wasn't evil yet]], but he was rather disturbing to look at.
* DarkLordOnLifeSupport: Orochimaru became bedridden after his arms were sealed by the Third Hokage, and eventually he gets progressively weaker and more sickly when he has not transferred his mind to a new body every three years. Sasuke takes advantage of this and defeats him in his sickly state.
* DealWithTheDevil: Offers one to Tsunade and Sasuke; Tsunade turns him down, while Sasuke managed to [[DidYouJustScamCthulhu scam him]], albeit with some difficulty. Other deals probably didn't turn out so well for anyone but him.
* DeathIsCheap: Orochimaru has multiple contingency plans to resurrect himself should his current host be killed.
* DemotedToExtra: Was once the main villain of the entire series, then the Akatsuki showed up and they suddenly took over everything. In Part 2, he was prominent for one relatively short arc (and one filler arc in the anime) and then gets defeated by Sasuke and doesn't appear again for ages. Worse is the fact that in the grand scheme of things his biggest contribution to the plot was just getting Sasuke to defect from Konoha. His actions have almost no role in the overarching myth arc of the series, beyond foreshadowing the Rinnegan.
* {{Determinator}}: Not even getting his arms sealed, having his BodySurf jutsu reversed on him, or being sealed for all eternity can keep him down.
* DevourTheDragon: He was planning on doing this to Sasuke, but it got turned around on him.
* DidntSeeThatComing: PlayedForLaughs in Boruto, where he is as surprised as everyone else [[spoiler:that someone wants his autograph.]] [[PetTheDog He gives it.]]
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: He cuts open the stomach of the Shinigami in order to break the rules of Edo Tensei.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: Part I ended on a note that he would still be the BigBad of Part II, or at least a villain driving much of the storyline. Nope; he gets dealt with pretty quickly, and while he does return, he's not nearly as big of a threat as he was in Part I.
* DishingOutDirt: Can disappear through walls and trees; an ability of earth users in ''Naruto''. In addition, in the anime, he can create Shadow Clones made from mud.
* TheDragon: Originally started out as one for Danzo when he was still affiliated with the Leaf Village, and was meant to be his PuppetKing when he vied for the seat of Fourth Hokage.
* TheDreaded: In Part I, and still in Part II if to a lesser extent. At the start of the series, barring Pain, Tobi, Jiraiya, Tsunade, Itachi, and the Third Hokage, nobody stood a chance against him.
** When Orochimaru confronts Kakashi during the Chuunin exams, the Copy Ninja puts up a brave front by charging his Lightning Blade, promising to kill Orochimaru if he ever lays a hand on Sasuke. After Orochimaru laughs off the threat and leaves, Kakashi realizes in horror that Orochimaru could have killed him easily and that he was a fool for making such a boast.
** Even Ibiki Morino, a hardened torturer, admitted to his colleagues that Orochimaru terrified him. At the same time, the databooks showed that Orochimaru is the one he wants to fight the most.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: ''Twice'', in an incredibly awkward manner both times. The first time, shortly into [[TimeSkip Shippuden]], Sasuke attacks him, deciding he's not useful anymore. Orochimaru tries to use his ''GrandTheftMe no Jutsu'' on Sasuke, only for Sasuke to [[HoistByHisOwnPetard turn it back on him]]. Much later, during Sasuke's fight with Itachi, Sasuke runs out of chakra, which frees Orochimaru... only for Itachi to seal him in a permanent, inescapable genjutsu before he can do anything. It's later revealed that he can be resurrected as long as his [[SoulJar Cursed Seals]] is still around.
* EasilyForgiven: Downplayed as most characters plainly still do not like him and have not necessarily forgiven him. [[spoiler:As of Naruto Gaiden, Orochimaru is still kicking around and still experimenting. And for all that, Naruto and Sasuke simply treat him closer to an annoyance than a despised foe. Despite stating that he regards himself as having been "tamed," willing now to help the shinobi world in exchange for his life and some freedom, his appearances in ''Boruto'' show that Orochimaru is still going strong with violating basic human rights - including being one cause for his son's rampant mental and emotional issues (admittedly with the goal of helping him become a full human) while creating several synthetic humans and potentially still doing unethical things to them. He is allowed somewhat free range (it's noted it's best he not be seen in public in the rare event he's permitted to leave his hideout, such as a parent-teacher meeting in Konoha), simply because he pays lip service while willingly being babysat by Yamato and assisting the ninja nations in emergencies.]]
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Ever since he was a child, he had unnaturally pale skin and lank black hair.
* EffeminateVoice: Orochimaru has a CreepyHighPitchedVoice. He's always been androgynous to the point where, due to the fact he uses other's bodies to stay young, he often veers into AmbiguousGender.
* EnemyMine:
** He agrees to help Sasuke Uchiha find the answers he is looking for only because he is too weak to attempt his GrandTheftMe Jutsu.
** And in ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'', he agrees to help [[spoiler:Naruto and Sasuke track down his former student and test subject, Shin Uchiha.]]
* EnergyAbsorption: He can also absorb chakra through physical contact. Although Orochimaru is shown absorbing only his own chakra from Kabuto Yakushi, so it's unclear if he can absorb all of a target's chakra if he so chooses.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes:
** Despite everything, he does have some attachment to his former team and mentor even though he has attempted to kill him (and succeeded in Hiruzen's case). When he had Hiruzen at knifepoint, he noticeably had tears in his eyes, which he quickly brushes it off as him simply yawning. [[spoiler:And when he sees from Naruto's memories Jiraiya's memorial, he noticeably has a somber expression.]]
** Despite Orochimaru’s claims to the contrary, he seems to genuinely care for Mitsuki as both a person and his son as opposed to just an experiment he spent too much time and resources on to allow to die.
* EvilFormerFriend: To Jiraiya.
* EvilGenius: To Akatsuki alongside Sasori and Tobi and to the Sound Village.
* EvilIsPetty: So, why did he kill the Third Hokage and try to wipe Konoha off the map? Basically, because he was butthurt that he didn't get picked for Fourth Hokage fifteen years previous. Or because he saw peace as stagnant, or because he had a lingering bond to the village that he wanted to sever. He is intentionally vague and contradictory about his motives.
* EvilLaugh: He loves laughing evilly, and not even in a snake-like fasion either.
* EvilMentor: To Sasuke, Kabuto and implicitly to nearly all of his named underlings, he guides them down paths of ruthless ambition, vile behavior, and just twisted means of living and growing.
* EvilOverlord: Ruled the Land of Sound with an iron fist, until Sasuke kills him.
* EvilParentsWantGoodKids: He genuinely wants Mitsuki to find a better path than he did and tests him until he determines Mitsuki will pick his own path.
* EvilPlan: He wants to learn every jutsu and become immortal out of inherent ambition, and possibly something to do with the Third Great Shinobi War. This leads to a lot of kidnapping, experimentation, pain and suffering of others. In Part 1, he sought Sasuke's Sharigan as a means to an end, and so sought to corrupt the boy.
* EvilSoundsRaspy: His Japanese voice is rather hoarse.
* EvilutionaryBiologist: Tries to find the meaning of existence by constantly experimenting on himself and his subjects so he can discover even more jutsu techniques.
-->'''Orochimaru:''' I want to obtain all the techniques and gain a true understanding of everything in this world. The first one to mix blue and yellow called the new color "green". I want to do something similar to that. If blue is the chakra, then yellow is the seal, and green is the technique… Just as there is no end to the variety of colors, there are so many thousands… tens of thousands of techniques in the world as well. But in order to obtain every possible technique and truth, it would require an eternity. The only one who understands everything after spending much time on this can be fittingly called the Ultimate Being.
* EvilVersusEvil: He's a former member of the Akatsuki. They want him dead and vice versa. He even keeps Sasuke from trying to kill his former teammates, in the hopes that they will kill off a few more members for him.
* ExBigBad: After the 4th Shinobi World War, Orochimaru is EasilyForgiven for his crimes against the Shinobi world and becomes an ally to both Naruto and Boruto.
* FaceStealer: Stole the face of a Grass genin before the second task of the chunin exam.
* FacialMarkings: Born with unnaturally pale skin and purple marks around his eyes.
* FallenHero: Despite his claims to the contrary, his flashbacks establish that while he was always creepy, Orochimaru was, once upon a time, a genuine hero, or at least an AntiHero. Watching everyone around him die caused him to become obsessed with obtaining immortality, first for the entire village, and [[MotiveDecay eventually just for himself]]. Orochimaru would rather bite out his own tongue than admit this of course.
* ForScience: His primary motivation was to find the origin of ninjutsu. To do that, he needed [[BodySurf immortality]], and [[MagicalEye the Rinnegan]]. Too bad that in order to achieve it he needed to experiment on human beings.
* ForTheEvulz: When the Third Hokage presses him for his motives beyond revenge, the only other reason Orochimaru gives... is that he was bored. It is implied all this was an excuse, and that his real reason was something different (possibly a lingering bond with the village that he wanted to sever), but it's never explicitly confirmed.
* AFormYouAreComfortableWith: Orochimaru reveals to his former sensei, the Third Hokage, that he invented a technique called ''Living Corpse Reincarnation'' to let him transfer his soul into a different body at least once every three years. As expected, the Third Hokage is horrified by this revelation when Orochimaru shows him the true face of his host's body which comes off as completely unfamiliar to him.
* FourIsDeath: Sasuke was going to be the fourth body Orochimaru claimed before Sasuke thwarted Orochimaru and killed him, and before that, was going to be the fourth body Orochimaru had, including his original, before the Sound Four took too long and Orochimaru had to transfer prematurely.
* FromASingleCell: Orochimaru comes back at least twice from his Curse Mark thanks to his chakra stocked there. It's also heavily implied that the snakes that make up his true form can also have this use.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: In the anime adaptation of the events leading up to [[spoiler:Naruto's and Hinata's wedding]], Orochimaru can be seen running around in the background in numerous scenes, [[UnusuallyUninterestingSight going completely unnoticed despite his notoriety]], passing as a waitress and running through a field while laughing maniacally as Lee talked to Iruka-sensei.
* GaveUpTooSoon: During Orochimaru's efforts to replicate Hashirama's Wood Release by injecting the deceased Hokage's DNA into 60 infants, he abandoned the experiment when most of the infants died, unaware that one of them not only survived but could use Wood Release (albeit on a weaker scale compared to Hashirama). Danzo even mocks him in the anime for being so fickle with his experiments.
* GenerationXerox: He has passed on his villainy and high amounts of creepiness very well, if his proteges [[SmugSnake Kabuto]], [[AxCrazy Sasuke]] and any self-respecting Sound shinobi are any indication. Also applies to his sons in the ''Boruto'' series, but they seem to have mainly inherited his looks and better qualities.
* GodhoodSeeker: Orochimaru's goal is to become the Ultimate Being by learning all ninjutsu and discover their origin. His study of the Uchiha Clan led to him discovering the stone tablet written by the Sage of Six Paths, the creator of ninjutsu, and he became obsessed with obtaining the Sage's power, developing an [[ShootTheShaggyDog incorrect]] hypothesis that the Rinnegan could be attained by reuniting the Sage's bloodlines, the Senju and Uchiha clans. To this end, he coveted the Sharingan, and the cells of Hashirama Senju. By the time of ''Boruto'' he has attained immortality and claims to have given up on his desire for godhood, though he still performs a myriad of unethical experiments.[[note]]As mentioned in the character description above, he doesn’t seem to gather (let alone imprison) human guinea pigs anymore, nor do his experiments seem to be as inhumane as they used to be, but he now creates his own human guinea pigs through cloning and is still willing to subject somebody besides a clone to an experiment as a form of punishment. He isn’t above manipulating his own son through LaserGuidedAmnesia either. Granted, it was to teach him free will, but still.[[/note]]
* GoneHorriblyRight: Orochimaru's training of Sasuke ends up with this. Orochimaru wanted to make Sasuke as strong as he possibly could so that he could have a perfect vessel. They agreed on the first part but differed on the second, and it turns out Sasuke is much better trained than Orochimaru believed... which doesn't work out well for him.
* GoodParents: He seems to be a genuinely loving parent towards his two sons, stating he thinks of them as perfect, despite being clones. He even wants his younger son to find a different and better path than himself and allows him to stay in the Leaf village when asked.
* GrandTheftMe: When his current body begins to rot, he does this to an unwitting victim. It gets used against him by Sasuke, who sublimates him and uses his powers until he gets removed by Itachi. After he's revived and releases the Hokages from the Death God's belly, he takes the body of a Zetsu.
* GreenThumb: After possessing a White Zetsu clone.
* HandicappedBadass: At one point he lost both his arms to the Reaper Death Seal and still managed to put up a fight against Jiraiya and Tsunade.
* HazyFeelTurn: He aligns himself with Sasuke during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Sasuke has decided to aid the United Shinobi front, and Orochimaru goes along with him. Ultimately it seems to be more like a Face Neutral Turn than any real change to his character; none of his actual opinions or ultimate goals seem to have changed, but he has no particular reason to want the world to be destroyed or to end up in a LotusEaterMachine, so he has no objections to aiding Sasuke in preventing this. [[spoiler:His treatment of his created son and willingness to assist both Sasuke and Naruto long after the war implies that he's closer to Face.]] Overall it's unclear if he regrets his past crimes (beyond the regret that most of them never really accomplished much as far as his goals went), but he certainly sees no reason to continue them and is satisfied enough with his new "tamed" status given how justifiably he could have been put to death and is quite supportive of his son trying to become a better person than he ever was. Tsunade herself admits he has changed to some degree.
* HealingFactor: Can regenerate most damage by ''[[{{Squick}} vomiting a new body out of his mouth.]]'' Sasuke was able to do this as well after absorbing him, but lost the ability after Itachi extracted Orochimaru from him.
* HellishPupils: Golden eyes with slitted snake-like pupils, to be exact.
* HeroKiller: Peaked with his assassination of the Third Hokage.
* HiddenAgendaVillain:
** A flashback of a conversation he had with Sasuke implies that he is this; Sasuke tells Orochimaru that he knows [[ForTheEvulz the reason he gave]] for trying to destroy the Leaf Village was a lie and asks why he ''really'' did it. The story cuts back to the present before we see Orochimaru's answer, so his true agenda is still unknown.
** While the motives for his experimentation with Senju cells and obsession with attaining Sasuke as a host remained a mystery for most of the series, It was eventually revealed through Kabuto that Orochimaru was trying to attain the power of the Sage of Six Paths: the Rinnegan.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Frequently. He betrayed Akatsuki by trying to take Itachi's body, only for the latter to [[CurbStompBattle curb stomp him]] and Akatsuki to put him on their death list. He drew out his fight with Sarutobi to torment him, which gave Sarutobi time to fall back on his suicide jutsu and cost Oro his arms. And he corrupted Sasuke only to be betrayed and [[CurbStompBattle curb stomped]] by ''him'' when the time came to steal ''his'' body. He tried to get Sasuke's body years earlier too and if Kabuto hadn't convinced him to choose someone else (as Sasuke was taking too much time to arrive), he may have even died.
* HumanoidAbomination: The sheer amount of shit he did to himself eventually made him into one of these, able to turn his legs into a snake tail; shed his body to grow a new one; reattach severed body parts, including reconnecting his upper and lower bodies; stretch his limbs, neck, and tongue, and throw up snakes. His [[ScaledUp real appearance]] is something to be seen.
* HypocriticalHumor: When Sasuke was dying, and Karin said a chakra she didn't recognize was next to him, Orochimaru said they better hurry because "some creep who slithered out from under some rock somewhere is doing who-knows-what to Sasuke-kun"... perfectly describing himself and his weird fixation on Sasuke throughout the entirety of the series.
* ImmortalitySeeker: It initially was to wait until his parents reincarnated, but eventually it devolved into becoming the perfect being, and becoming immortal was essential to that goal since he knew he could not accomplish it in his own lifetime.
* ImplacableMan: It takes a legendary technique to finally seal him away, and it is revealed that even THAT didn't kill him. He will not die!
* InferredSurvival: Orochimaru was absorbed by Sasuke at one point, but it was speculated by many fans he was merely suppressed and waiting for an opportunity to re-emerge. He did and was immediately killed, but the appearance of a white snake trying to flee the battlefield hinted it wasn't so clean-cut. Turns out Orochimaru's consciousness can hide in any of his cursed seals, so he came back again.
* InformedAbility: Supposedly he was the strongest of the Sannin at one point. Considering what we've seen Jiraiya and Tsunade pull off, even after they've supposedly lost their edge due to age and lack of practice, this is a somewhat dubious claim. It might be justified since whenever he fought in the series, he was either in a weak host or was rejected by the body he inhabited or both.
* IronicHell: He wanted to live forever and now he will, it's just that [[LotusEaterMachine he's also stuck in an eternal illusion]]. He was set free by Sasuke.
* {{Irony}}:
** When he joined the Akatsuki, he ends up working for the very orphans that he suggested killing out of mercy all those years ago. The irony was not lost on him when he recognizes Pain as Yahiko in ''VideoGame/NarutoUltimateNinjaStormRevolutions'', even more so since they were Jiraiya's former pupils.
** Orochimaru, arguably one of the grossest characters in the whole series, is grossed out by bugs.
* ItAmusedMe: Gives a quote for this to the Third Hokage before they begin to fight.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Orochimaru may well be the most selfish character of the whole story. Outside of the Uchiha clan.
* JokerImmunity: The guy just won't stay dead or sealed, even if he can be PutOnABus for quite long periods.
* KarmaHoudini: As of the end of Part II and ''The Last'', he gets away scot-free in the ending of the ''Naruto'' story through to at least the ''Boruto'' start. In ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'', which takes place at least 15 years after the end of the war, he's shown to [[spoiler:still be free and lounging about in his hideout, doing what he wants to some extent (supposedly he's kept under observation, but it's slipshod at best, and it's entirely unclear how much of the new limits to how far his experiments go nowadays are under pressure or self-imposed). Plus he has an even younger body than he had in Part II. Kishimoto even confirmed that Orochimaru gained immortality later on.]]
* KillingIntent: His is so strong that it can induce visions of their gruesome death into weaker opponents (Sakura and Sasuke in part 1), or paralyze even experienced one (Kakashi).
* KnightOfCerebus: While Zabuza was intimidating, Orochimaru brings the first present [[CharacterDeath death]] of a main protagonist, helps send TheLancer into serious SanitySlippage, and was playing for keeps.
* LargeHam: Orochimaru chews more than a bit of scenery.
* LeanAndMean: Not as buff as the rest of the Akatsuki.
* LooksLikeCesare: A reason why people were wary of him before his FaceHeelTurn.
* MadScientist: Tries to discover ninjutsu and immortality through experimentation on his subjects and victims.
* MasterSwordsman: Although he isn't primarily a swordfighter, Orochimaru demonstrates amazing skill with a blade when he decides to engage in a swordfight.
* ManipulativeBastard:
** He plays on literally everyone's emotions. Tricked the entire Sand village into a war with Konoha by murdering and impersonating their leader.
** The most twisted example is how he pretended to care about Kimimaro, and the poor guy ''didn't even know this''. He saved Kimimaro from a FateWorseThanDeath, ''just so he could experiment on his body''.
* MasterOfDisguise: A very gruesome example, since he tears off the faces of his victims to wear over his body. In fact, his usual face '''is actually a mask worn over his host''', only worn out of ShapeShifterGuiltTrip as well as maintaining his identity.
* MercyKill: Back during the Third Great Ninja War he suggested to the other Sannin that he do this to the beggar children Konan, Nagato, and Yahiko, as he reasoned he had seen many children in their situation and that he believed nothing but misery awaited them in their future. He's rebuffed by Jiraiya, who opts to instead train them for a time.
* MoreThanMindControl: How he gets most of his followers, typically by using knowledge of their circumstances or desires to get into their heads and paint joining him as a choice preferable to their other options. It's rare for him to actually try to force anyone to do anything.
* MotiveDecay: Pointed out InUniverse by Sasuke when he asks if Orochimaru even knows his own goals anymore. His stated goal is to attain true immortality and learn the truth behind ninjutsu, but by the series proper he's devolved into conducting cruel experiments on people, few of which really have anything directly to do with his goals.
* {{Necromancer}}: One of three, the other two being Kabuto and the Second Hokage. They all used the same technique too: Impure World Resurrection.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: In regards to ''anyone''.
* NonIndicativeName: Despite The Sword of Kusanagi's Japanese name indicating what kind of sword it is,[[note]]For reference, it's called Kusanagi no Tsurugi[[/note]] its appearance in the manga is a katana. Averted in the anime, where it looks more in line of a tsurugi.
* NotSoAboveItAll: In the anime adaptation of ''Literature/KonohaHidenThePerfectDayForAWedding'', he can be seen getting drunk at a bar. He's also revealed to have entomophobia[[note]]The irrational fear of insects.[[/note]].
* ObviouslyEvil: Just look at him: pale skin, snake eyes, snake tongue, snake body... The guy has "evil" written all over him and that's ''before'' his motives are even revealed. Interestingly he looked like this (as far as the eyes and skin go at least) well before he actually turned evil and no explanation is ever given for his appearance.
* OhCrap: This is his face when he realizes that Itachi pierced him with a sword Totsuka.
* {{Orochi}}: Turns into one when Sasuke is weakened enough to unseal him, only to be sealed again by Itachi. The form is stated to be his most powerful jutsu. Currently provides the page picture.
* OnlyOneName: Possibly subverted. He's never given a canon surname much like his ex-teammates, but on his parents' tombstone, there are two words after their given names, implying that he has one. The kanji's poor quality in both the manga and anime make it impossible to read, however.
* OutOfFocus: Suffers from this in Part II's climax.
* OverlyLongTongue: Weaponized of course.
* ParasiticImmortality: Orochimaru dreams of achieving immortality so that he can learn every existing jutsu in addition to those that will be created in the future. To this end, he creates a technique called the Living Corpse Reincarnation that transfers his soul into other people's bodies, effectively cheating death by periodically swapping hosts.
* ParentalSubstitute: He was one to Kabuto, being despite everything, the closest thing he had to a father/brother.
* PetTheDog: In the anime, he congratulates Naruto and Hinata on their impending nuptials and wishes them good luck in their marriage.
* PoisonousPerson: His true form has poisonous blood which will vaporize and become airborne.
* PossessionBurnout: The ultimate fate of the bodies Orochimaru steals is that eventually they'll break down on him and reject his soul, necessitating having to switch bodies, though it seems that the strength of the new body in question factors in how long it will last. Not helping is that his body-switching jutsu requires at least three years between each use, so he needs to take a body strong enough to last that long on its own, and indeed the body he took [[EmergencyTransformation when Sasuke was too late in being brought back to him by the Sound Four]] was already breaking down on him three years later when Sasuke made his double-cross.
* PostMortemComeback: He rematerialized during the fight between the Uchiha brothers, after getting sealed within Sasuke. They were both rough from fighting each other so he was in a prime position to take one of their bodies. Except Itachi just finished the job by sealing him a second time. This comeback also sets up his eventual resurrection by Sasuke using Anko's Cursed Seal.
* PowerCopying: Orochimaru desires the ability to obtain any technique, and for that, he needs the Sharingan and the Rinnegan.
* PragmaticVillainy: He seems to have made a few lessons in this after his rebirth. He helps stop Obito and Madara on the basis that if the world's destroyed, he won't be able to continue his experiments. He also cows to Naruto and Sasuke's wishes long after the war ends, behaving himself as he knows they can kill him. He may even be regaining some of his past better self in the process.
* ProfessorGuineaPig: The extent of his modifications to himself aren't entirely clear, but he definitely did more than his fair share of self-experimentation in his search for more power and immortality, and while he succeeded to some degree, he also turned himself into a barely-human abomination whose means of immortality requires him to regularly search for new host bodies before the one he has completely burns out.
* PuppetKing: Intended to be this for Danzo to be when he became a candidate for the position of Fourth Hokage. Orochimaru, for his part, was more focused on continuing his experiments and merely saw the position of Hokage as a means of furthering them.
* {{Retcon}}: Orochimaru was presumably the one in charge when Tsunade's brother Nawaki died. He was there to meet her when she arrived. In the first part of Naruto, he's shown giving a callous response that Tsunade throws back at him later: All living things that have form must perish eventually. Later, during his death scene, it is one of several events shown in a montage, and instead, he's obviously clearly upset as he hands Tsunade the pendant. Obviously, the latter is more sympathetic as it's part of a sequence showing how twisted he became over time instead of the original portrayal of always being a twisted monster. This actually makes sense in series as well: having become a monster, it's likely that both he and Tsunade have gone out the way to forget that he ever did her any favors.
* RetroactiveIdiotBall: He tried summoning the fourth Hokage along with the first and second during his battle with Hiruzen, but he couldn't be reanimated because his soul was in the Shinigami's stomach, which wasn't revealed until much later in the series. Since the reanimation has to be performed ''before'' putting the reanimated shinobi in a coffin, Orochimaru should have already known it wouldn't work, so he shouldn't have even had a third coffin to begin with.
* {{Sadist}}: He is a power-hungry psychopath but he clearly likes making people suffer along the way. He also seems to enjoy making a mockery of other peoples' beliefs and values, for example by how much his horrific actions freak other people out, as well as manipulating others to fight and die for him of their own will; in addition, his stated reason for trying to start a war was "peace is boring" (though it's later noted his real reason was something else). He also once lost the use of arms because he dragged a fight out for too long- because he was trying to make his opponent, his mentor the Third Hokage, psychologically suffer before losing.
* SatanicArchetype: Snakes are considered Satanic, Orochimaru is incredibly sinister for most of the series and has an unhealthy interest young boys who he can transfer his body into to avoid aging. He does mellow out at the end of the series but was still one of the most devilish figures of the series. Not to mention that he acts as a corruptive and temper figure for many characters, particularly Sasuke and Anko.
* ScaledUp: Due to experiments he carried out on his own body, his true form is a serpentine monster made up of [[BodyOfBodies smaller snakes]].
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: By the time of ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'', Orochimaru, international terrorist extraordinaire, is still up to his usual business to an ambiguous extent. Naruto, 7th Hokage, is not only fully aware of this but knows where Orochimaru's base is and hasn't got word one to say about Orochimaru's activities until a rogue experiment that slipped his leash long ago shows up near Konoha and he immediately drops the subject after being assured that it was indeed rogue and not following Orochimaru's orders. It's implied in a novel and elaborated on in ''Boruto'' that Orochimaru's semi-freedom was not Naruto's decision alone, but a practical resolution reached by the ninja authorities of the world after Orochimaru's knowledge and abilities proved instrumental in saving the world during the last great war. In return for no longer causing suffering and mayhem, and being available to use his skills should a great threat arise again, he is allowed some measure of freedom and mercy. Orochimaru himself, humbled by his defeats and perhaps even regretful of some of his choices, seems to find this an acceptable arrangement.
* SealedEvilInACan: His final fate. Note that the can is not even ''material''. [[HesBack Then Sasuke opens the can...]]
* SecondaryColorNemesis: As seen in the image above, Orochimaru's usual attire consists of a tan and dark green robe plus a pale purple rope belt (''shimenawa'').
* SelfMadeSuperPowers: Orochimaru is a brilliant scientist, and using his expertise with biology [[BioAugmentation modified his body]] to be very [[VoluntaryShapeshifting malleable]] and snakelike, a power he refers to as the Power of the White Snake.[[note]]The Fourth Databook and ''Boruto'' indicate that the Power of the White Snake was at least in part obtained from his training under the White Snake Sage at Ryūchi Cave.[[/note]] He gains a HealingFactor, ability to reconnect body parts via snakes, shed his skin to regurgitate a new body free from all damage, etc. Most importantly, he gains the power to use Living Corpse Reincarnation, his path to immortality that allows him to [[GrandTheftMe transfer his consciousness to another body]] (albeit his altered original body also enters the new body). He can store his consciousness within the cursed seals that he brands others with, allowing him to revive himself, albeit with some outside help, even after being sealed by Itachi Uchiha's extremely powerful sealing jutsu.
* SerialKiller: Before his formal defection, he had been abducting an unknown number of victims and performing gruesome, typically fatal experiments on them- this included [=ANBU=], Jounin, Chuunin, innocent civilians, ''teenage children'' (including ''his own pupil''), and ''sixty newborn babies'' of whom only one- Yamato- ultimately survived.
* ShesAManInJapan: His Kusagakure disguise from when he infiltrated the chūnin exams has feminine features and is voiced by a woman, but is referred to by characters in the Japanese versions and the English manga as a male. The anime's dub (plus the official subs on the [=DVDs=] and streaming service) has them referred to as a female until Orochimaru's identity is revealed.
* ShootTheShaggyDog: The Sage of Six Paths himself debunked Oro's hypothesis on how to get the Rinnegan by revealing that it's not combining Uchiha and Senju DNA that awakens the Rinnegan, but combining the chakras of his sons Indra and Asura, who are periodically reincarnated into the Uchiha and Senju clans respectively. Ergo, if Orochimaru had succeeded in possessing Itachi he still would have been unable to achieve his goal.
* SinisterSurveillance: His Cursed Seals let him spy on everyone who has one, letting him see and hear whatever they do. They seem to only serve this function when he is "dead", though.
* SissyVillain: Orochimaru first appears disguised as a woman[[note]][[ShesAManInJapan In the English anime only]][[/note]], [[BodySurf at one point used another woman's body as a vessel]], and in his least freaky times speaks with a feminine speech pattern. And this is before you factor in [[MemeticMolester his obsession with young Uchiha men]] and the giant purple butt bow. However, he is a very formidable opponent who, despite being killed twice, is still around in one form or another.
* SixthRangerTraitor: Was this in Akatsuki.
* SmugSnake: Though, he remains a high-functioning type, straddling the line between this and MagnificentBastard. It is arguably the smugness itself that is what gets in his way.
* SnakePerson: He can shed his humanoid appearance and assume a snake-like form, which he can use to escape or possess others.
* SnakesAreSinister: When investigating the source of Juugo's clan's power, Orochimaru discovered the Ryūchi Cave and became the pupil of the White Snake Sage. While he was unable to attain Snake Sage Mode, he acquired the Power of the White Snake and the ability to summon snakes at will.
* SssssnakeTalk: Occasionally draws out "s"-sounds in a hiss in the manga, seemingly more often when he's trying to appear threatening. In the anime, this tendency is mostly dropped, as his raspy tenor gets his snakelike qualities across just as well without it.
%%%%* TheSociopath:
* SoulJar: Orochimaru set up the Cursed Seals to function as these in case anything happened to him.
* SpannerInTheWorks: He was this to the Akatsuki which is why he was marked for death by them.
* SparingTheAces: The guy probably really should be put to death or imprisoned for a few dozen lifetimes, but he's too useful. Everyone knows where he is, what he's doing, and he's not committing atrocities anymore. His willingness to cooperate and lack of subversion and espionage means he isn't a detriment. The Five Nations eventually agreed that as long as he is supervised and held to a tight leash, that he will remain somewhat free just in case they need a weapon against someone like Madara. That all being said, a lot of people don't like him, so if he did anything out of line, people would gleefully take the opportunity to try and kill him. Though, the lack of rogue agents going after him may be due to his annoying abilities to cheat death. Any rogues going after him may be hesitantly stopped by their superiors just to prevent the current status quo from changing. In the end, it's just generally agreed that he's not worth the effort to try and kill.
* TheSpymaster: He has a huge intel network that allows him to maintain control of less powerful villages or nations.
* StalkerShot: He gets one of these when it's revealed that he was watching Team Yamato's confrontation with Kabuto.
* StupidEvil: Although clever and skilled, he tends to pick up the VillainBall because of this trope. Case in point: he manages to persuade the Kazekage to help him invade Konoha... and then randomly decides to kill him anyway.
* SummonMagic: As his name indicates, he can summon snakes. In addition, he can summon a bunch of Rashōmon Gates.
* TakeAThirdOption: In an ambiguous canon cutscene from ''Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution'' that shows how he joined the Akatsuki, Orochimaru is confronted by Sasori and Pain's Deva Path. After being beaten by Sasori, he vomits out a new body and flat out attempts to steal Pain's Rinnegan, therefore bypassing having to steal an Uchiha body, mature its Sharingan, and implant Hashirama's cells into it. Pain just blasts him with an Almighty Push.
* ThisCannotBe: Word for word a few times, but the most memorable being during his VillainousBreakdown after Sasuke overwhelms him.
* TooDumbToLive: Overlapping with StupidEvil, but probably the worst example occurs during his first fight with Itachi. While his second fight can be forgiven, as while revealing himself was arrogant, Orochimaru can survive grievous injuries due to Oral Rebirth and his regeneration, so not trying to dodge or block the Totsuka Blade wasn't ''too'' stupid of a thing to do without prior knowledge. However, there really was no excuse for his first fight with the younger Uchiha. Did he come with any countermeasures to genjutsu, as he knows the Sharingan buffs genjutsu, and can assume it's upgraded version would be even better? Did he come when his body was still healthy and not about to give out, as he could reasonably assume the guy who slaughtered the Uchiha clan (even if at night when most were off guard) would have to be one hell of a fighter, as at least some of the Leaf Police would've been awake, and thus be prepared for the fight of his life in case his sneak attack didn't work out? Did he bring any edo tensei bodies to assist him, or any Hidden Sound ninjas to distract Itachi? Anything? [[DidNotThinkThisThrough Why, of course not.]] All things considered, he was lucky to escape with only a lost arm.
* TragicVillain: The loss of his parents hit Orochimaru ''hard''. He believed that if he lived long enough, he would be able to meet their reincarnations, hence his pursuit of immortality. Originally he desired to find immortality for the entire village, but the constant wars made him cynical, and he gradually descended into madness, losing sight of his original goal.
* TrulySingleParent: Mitsuki's story reveals Orochimaru created Mitsuki and at least one elder brother known only as Log from himself, though they don't appear to be fully clones of Orochimaru (aside from looking different, he also wanted them to be able to master jutsu that he was never able to).
* {{Ubermensch}}: Tries to change the world through war, but Tobi beats him to it. He also abandoned the village largely because he rejected its ideals and values.
* TheUnfettered: Orochimaru is willing to do anything to attain immortality and discover the truth behind ninjutsu.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Downplayed. He was certainly nowhere near as evil as a child and had a couple of sweet moments, but even Sarutobi admitted that even back then Oro had "eyes full of malice and ambition". He ignored this because it was a time of war and someone like that might be needed; that, and he was too proud of him to admit it.
* VillainBall: He is far too arrogant and sadistic for his own good and he has been guilty of WhyDontYouJustShootHim since as far back as the Chuunin Exam arc, which ultimately cost him his arms. Furthermore, he's prone to doing things that are counter-productive to his goals purely because [[ForTheEvulz he can]]; this is best shown when he kills the Kazekage... ''after'' the Kazekage had agreed to help him attack Konoha.
* VillainousBreakdown: It happened twice:
** The first time it happened when the Third Hokage deprived him of the possibility to use his hands. Orochimaru fell into a rage and began yelling at his former Sensei to return his hands.
** The second time it happened when he tries to grab the body of Sasuke, but Sasuke turns it back on him. Before Sasuke suppressed his consciousness, Orochimaru only could shout about how [[ThisCannotBe this could not happen to him]] and that he is [[SmugSnake invincible]].
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: Due to having his arms sealed away for the majority of the series and his host bodies rejecting him, Orochimaru relatively remained the same since his debut in Part II. By the end of the series, Naruto and Sasuke are so completely out of his league that one suspects that the biggest reason why Konoha allowed him to become a KarmaHoudini is that he was no longer a genuine threat to them -- if he ever turned hostile again, Naruto, Sakura or Sasuke could and would ''obliterate'' him right off the face of the planet by themselves, immortality be damned.
* VillainousFriendship: With Kabuto. He seems to legitimately like him and lets him get away with a ''lot'' more snark than his other subordinates.
* VillainTakesAnInterest: To Sasuke where he isn't just interested in the hero's potential but wants his body too (no, not like that). It's later revealed that Orochimaru tried to do the same thing to Sasuke's elder brother, Itachi. But he apparently stopped after he received [[CurbStompBattle an ass-kicking by him]].
* WarIsGlorious: Expresses this belief in the Chuunin Exam/Konoha Invasion arcs. Or rather, he expresses the belief that "peace is boring", likening it to a windmill that doesn't move.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Is afraid of bugs, at least based on the animé adaptation of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU8HklQoQUw Konoha Hiden]] where's it's naturally played for laughs.
* WeHaveReserves: He sacrifices the squad of teenage ninja (minus Dosu, who was already dead) he had infiltrate the Chuunin Exams in order to use their bodies to resurrect the deceased Hokages, just to help him win one fight. Beforehand, Orochimaru even flat-out admitted to Kakashi that he considers ''all'' of his subordinates without special worth to be nothing but worthless pawns. That said, his willingness to take in the desperate and give them some measure of power means he never really suffered from a lack of followers no matter how he treated them.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: In the original series he is nowhere to be seen after the great war; the character's final on-panel appearance shows him being freed from Mugen Tsukuyomi along with Kabuto, Suigetsu, Jugo and Karin. Later novels and series would reveal what became of him.
* WhatTheHellHero: He called out the Second Hokage for creating Edo Tensei, as well as for revealing it to the world.
* WildCard: Following his second resurrection, Orochimaru pledges to support Sasuke regardless of whether he chooses to destroy or protect Konoha. Sasuke ultimately chooses the latter option.
* TheWorfEffect:
** An offscreen example is how he failed to acquire Itachi's body, which showcases just how powerful and dangerous the young Uchiha was just as he was making his onscreen debut.
** In the third arc of Part II he was [[NotQuiteDead absorbed]] by Sasuke to show off how strong Sasuke had gotten (though after nearly dying in a later battle Sasuke was quick to point out he only won like this because Orochimaru was in a weakened state).
* WiseSerpent: Orochimaru, a powerful snake-themed ninja, is the smartest and most cunning of his team. He gets corrupted by the pursuit of learning all jutsu, going as far as doing [[BodyHorror inhumane experiments]]. Furthermore, he establishes a spy network across several countries. He's also a dark mentor figure for Anko, Sasuke, and Kabuto.
* WorfHadTheFlu: When he loses, this is usually because he is handicapped in some way.
** When Itachi thwarted his attempt to bodyjack him back when he was in Akatsuki, his current body was giving out on him.
** When he fought his former comrades, his arms were dead due to his fight with the Third Hokage.
** When Naruto pulverized him while going Four-Tails, his current body was on its way out.
** When Sasuke killed him, his current body was about to give out on him and die anyway.
** When Itachi sealed him, he was still trying to revive himself from within Sasuke. [[spoiler:Although, Itachi was ''also'' in pretty poor health by that point.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: Once proposed to kill Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan when they were children, although he viewed it as a MercyKill since "a miserable life is all that awaits them". He actually murdered many, many children years later though (ForScience), including infants and his own pupils/minions, and has made several attempts to kill others. He also attempts to kill an unconscious Naruto during his battle with his former teammates, viewing him as too dangerous to be left alive.
