->Princess of the Realm of Edenia, Kitana has been Shao Kahn's step-daughter and personal assassin, and later an important member of the Forces of Light. Her most memorable trait is her ability to wield a pair of steel fans in battle.

->Kitana was adopted by Kahn, as an infant, to strengthen his claims to the Edenian throne after he killed its king, Jerrod, and married Jerrod's wife, Queen Sindel, who were Kitana's parents. Kitana grew up dutifully loyal to Shao Kahn, whom she believed was her real father. She grew up to be one of Shao Kahn's personal assassins, alongside her good friend Jade and her evil "sister" Mileena. At some point in Kitana's life, she finally discovered the truth about her real father, Mileena's origins, and how Shao Kahn had conquered her realm. Devastated that her whole life had been a lie, Kitana vowed to overthrow the Emperor and restore Edenia to its former beauty. Kitana's chance finally came during ''Mortal Kombat II'', when Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung lured Earth's heroes into Outworld. Kitana entered the tournament and secretly contacted Earthrealm's heroes, but Mileena discovered her efforts and she was forced to kill her in self defense. Kitana was imprisoned and sentenced to death for killing Mileena, but managed to escape and rejoin her friends from Earth. Kahn sent Jade and Reptile after her, but rather than kill her childhood friend, Jade helped the Princess to defeat and capture Reptile. Then she converted her recently resurrected mother, Sindel, to her cause, and when Liu Kang managed to defeat Kahn had his invasion forces, Kitana and Sindel freed Edenia as well. But there was little time to celebrate, as a new threat presented itself in the form of Shinnok and his grand vizier Quan Chi. They invaded Edenia and imprisoned its legitimate rulers, then Raiden and his comrades come and saved the day. Kitana offered Liu Kang the chance to rule Edenia by her side, but the monk reluctantly turned her down because of his duty as the protector of Earthrealm.

->Kitana would later negotiate an uneasy truce between the Centaurians and the Shokans, gaining Goro's trust. The combined armies of Edenians and Shokans, led by Prince Goro and Kitana herself, marched against Outworld's armies a few years later, with much success at first. However, in the decisive moments, Goro was mortally wounded, and the battle ended with a draw. Shortly thereafter, Kitana learned about the demise of both Shao Kahn and Liu Kang at the hands of the ''Deadly Alliance'', and their plan to resurrect the Undead Army of the legendary Dragon King. Unfortunately, the Forces of Light and the princess were killed along the other heroes, only to be revived by Onaga into his mindless slaves. After the fall of the revived Dragon King, Kitana would gather her Edenian forces once more and prepare to face the ''Armageddon''.

->In ''VideoGame/MortalKombat9'', Kitana gets involved with the story at an earlier time than the previous games' canon, actually meeting Liu Kang during the events of the first game, resulting in her and Liu Kang becoming much closer than in the previous games. Kitana is present at the Mortal Kombat tournament, assigned as an assassin to secretly weaken Earthrealm. However her target, Liu Kang, subdues her in combat and she fails but he denies to kill her as a warrior, which starts to sow seeds of doubt in her purpose. The doubt continues to build through the Outworld tournament as she encounters other Earthrealmers who start to lead her away from Shao Kahn. Finally, Kitana embraces her doubt and investigates Shang Tsung's flesh pits, a place she had been forbidden to visit. There she learns that Shang Tsung had been committing vile experiments that resulted in the merging of her genetic code with that of a Tarkatan to create a monstrosity. Thinking Shang Tsung had been trying to subvert the emperor, she brings him before Shao Kahn for punishment. However Kahn had in fact authorized Shang Tsung's experiments, which finally causes Kitana to feel fully betrayed and she defects to Earthrealm, along with her friend Jade. The pair serve as defenders of Earthrealm until they run across Sindel. Sindel violently attacks the Earthrealm's base and kills almost everyone inside. Kitana survives the initial onslaught but dies once Liu Kang returns to find his comrades all laying dead. Her soul, like the souls of all the other Earthrealm warriors felled in the conflict, is collected by Quan Chi and revived as a revenant under his control. As of ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX'', she is still an undead revenant and remains that way throughout the story, ultimately ending up ruling the Netherrealm alongside Liu Kang.

->Another Kitana would later show up in ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11'', brought back from the past due to Kronika's machinations and working with the heroes to defeat Shao Kahn while her Revenant self allies with Kronika. The past version of Kitana ends up becoming the new Kahnum of Outworld after defeating Shao Kahn and severely incapacitating him, moving onward to join the forces of light in their final battle with Kronika, while her Revenant self is defeated by an empowered Liu Kang. Unfortunately, both end up erased from existence when Kronika causes a TimeCrash.

->The events of ''Aftermath'', however, see a different fate for both versions of Kitana. Due to Shang Tsung's intervention and revealing that Liu Kang needs Kronika's crown in order to properly create the New Era, the past Kitana ends up reunited with her mother, Queen Sindel, and Kitana wishes for both of them to rebuild Edenia together. At the worst possible timing, however, Sindel reveals that she has been EvilAllAlong, is legitimately in love with Shao Kahn, is the ''real'' murderer of Kitana's father Jerrod, and has been orchestrating a centuries-long plot to exert her divine right as a descendant of the Elder God Argus to conquer all realms. Kitana ends up successfully betrayed by her mother, who has allied herself with Shang Tsung. Her present Revenant self ends up assassinated by Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, and Sindel.

->In the New Era of ''Mortal Kombat 1'' created by Fire God Liu Kang, Kitana is reincarnated as the 2nd Princess of Outworld, rather than the sole Princess of Edenia. In this universe, she and Mileena are biological twin sisters, rather than the latter being a clone created by sorcery. Though a capable leader and warrior in her own right, she is resolute in her belief that Mileena is the rightful heir to the throne and does all that she can in order to help her sister be the best Queen she can be. A serious turning point occurs, however, when Mileena contracts the dreaded Tarkat disease, which threatens to transform her into a disfigured, bloodthirsty monster. In addition, there are some in Outworld who believe that Kitana would make a better ruler than Mileena due to her steadier hand, which would inevitably bring the two into conflict should Mileena's secret be discovered.

[[foldercontrol]]
!!Tropes related to Kitana in the Midway and original Netherrealm timelines[[note]]Tropes that appear across all of Kitana's appearances from ''VideoGame/MortalKombatII'' to ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11''.[[/note]]
[[folder:Kitana (Edenian)]]
* AlliterativeName: She becomes '''K'''itana '''K'''ahn after Kotal relinquishes his position as Outworld's ruler and gives it to her.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Fair-skinned, black-haired, and usually composed, regal, and serious. She reserves her affectionate side for those closest to her, mainly Liu Kang and Jade.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: She's widely considered to be Mileena's superior. She's the better fighter (Mileena has yet to even ''win'' a fight against her), ruler, and is far more respected and favored by various people across the realms such as Raiden and Kotal Kahn. In ''11'', Kung Lao outright tells Mileena in an intro that everyone prefers Kitana over her and that the one person who does prefer her, Shao Kahn, is considered to be an idiot by most people.
* AmazonianBeauty: [[DependingOnTheArtist Some of the games]] make her into a muscular beauty. [[VideoGame/MortalKombat9 9]], especially, depicts her as ripped, broad-shouldered, and rocking a six-pack. This goes hand-in-hand with her being considered an enchantingly-beautiful woman InUniverse, in addition to the {{Stripperiffic}} outfits she is known to wear.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: More like Ambiguously Fair-Skinned. In the live-action film, Kitana was portrayed by a Latina actress, and from then on, Kitana's character model was based on her performance capture actress, making her appear to be a fair-skinned brunette. As of ''11'', she now has East Asian facial features since Edenia is now a FantasyCounterpartCulture of various mixed East Asian countries. ''1'' would later bring her back to ambiguously brown.
* AndThisIsFor: Her intro with D'Vorah has plenty of this. Apparently, she honors the fallen of Edenia as Kahn.
-->'''Kitana:''' You killed [[YouKilledMyFather Jerrod]], D'Vorah?\
'''D'Vorah:''' This One killed many on Shao Kahn's behalf.\
'''Kitana:''' On behalf of them, ''[[PrepareToDie you die]]''.
* AnimalThemedFightingStyle: Kitana uses Eagle Claw as one of her styles in ''Deadly Alliance''.
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence:
** ''11'''s GoldenEnding [[spoiler:had Fire God Liu Kang choose her as his eternal partner in shaping the sands of fate, effectively making her a goddess]].
** In Liu Kang's ''11'' arcade mode ending, [[spoiler:she is among the group which Liu Kang promoted as his co-protectors of the realms. However, as Liu Kang narrated, [[StarCrossedLovers their godly duties prevent them from having a simple life]], [[EarnYourHappyEnding and that maybe in another timeline he hoped he and Kitana may live their lives with happiness]]]].
** ''1'' reveals [[spoiler:that she's managed to become a Keeper of Time and a Titan herself due to the timeline being fractured by Liu Kang and Shang Tsung's battle, with her branching off into a separate timeline.]]
* AsLongAsItSoundsForeign: Her name in concept was "[[CunningLikeAFox Kitsune]]", which was later rejected because it was a Japanese term and not Chinese (to fit with most of the other characters). Ironically, they chose to go with "Kitana" because it was a combination of "Kitsune" and "Katana", which they figured sounded (in their own words) "generically Asian enough".
* AssistCharacter: [[spoiler:Titan Kitana becomes Liu Kang's Kameo during the fourteenth chapter of ''VideoGame/MortalKombat1''.]]
* AssKicksYou: Her Square Boost in ''9''. While she's had the attack in her movelist numerous times before (as the Square Wave Punch), here she propels herself through the air rear end-first with a hip drop. Comes back for ''X'' and it's also a Brutality. This makes for a rather [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything hilarious moment if she says her, "That was fantastic!" win quote after performing the move in ''11''.]]
* AwfulTruth: [[spoiler:Shang Tsung, under the orders of Shao Kahn]], created clones of her. And then, the latter tells her the whole truth.
* BackFromTheDead: Subverted. [[spoiler:She stays as a revenant throughout ''X'']]
* BattleCouple: With Liu Kang. [[spoiler:This becomes prominent after [[DragonAscendant they become the]] [[RulingCouple new rulers of the Netherrealm]].]] [[spoiler:They later reunite as Keepers of Time in ''1''.]]
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: In ''9'', Kitana elects herself to assassinate Liu Kang to prevent him from progressing any further in Shang Tsung's tournament. Falling to the monk in battle, Kitana requests that he kill her as punishment for her failure to Shao Kahn, but Liu refuses, telling Kitana it was as if they never met and hoping that they could meet again under different circumstances. A shocked Kitana remains seated, deep in contemplation. This marks the start of their attraction (and Kitana's ConflictingLoyalty to the Outworld forces), indicated by their HeldGaze before Kitana returns to Outworld upon Shang's defeat.
* BerserkButton: Nearly anyone with the title of ''Kahn'', as well as her evil clone Mileena. The one exception was Kotal who she was able to work alongside without any major friction and even [[spoiler:saves his life from Shao Kahn]].
* BlowYouAway: Appears to have some wind-based attacks as of ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX''.
* BlueIsHeroic: Her main outfits are primarily blue.
* BraidsOfAction: In the original timeline, by the time of ''DA'', Kitana's hair had grown out to become so long that she tied and braided it up into a lengthy ponytail. She retains her hair in a ponytail in her alt. in ''9'' and both primary costumes in ''X'' have it braided in different styles. ''11'' brings back the hairbun from ''3''.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Her win pose in ''[=MK9=]'' (if she does not perform a Fatality), where she laughs and [[ThirdPersonSeductress winks at the player]].
* BreakoutCharacter: Although she started off as a loyal stepdaughter and assassin for Shao Kahn in ''MKII'', she was just another contestant in the tournament and did not return in ''[=MK3=]'' outside of a cameo in Liu Kang's ending. However, her popularity among players saw her return in the Ultimate update with an expanded story role and following her portrayal as a {{Love Interest|s}} to Liu Kang in [[Film/MortalKombatTheMovie the live-action film]], she carried this dynamic into the games and garnered a higher profile as a prominent character.
* BrokenTears: Her ending in ''Unchained'' when Blaze tells her that needs to be prepared for Armageddon. After everything she's already been through up until this point, she doesn't take it well. Doubles as a TearJerker due to ''Armageddon's'' [[TheBadGuyWins canonical ending.]]
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Mileena's Cain.
* ChildOfTwoWorlds: She is a child of Edenia, but was raised in Outworld under Shao Kahn's rule and knows little of her original realm and people. [[spoiler:Her Arcade ending in ''11'' has her restore Edenia, but with her having no knowledge of her original culture, she's completely alienated by it. She returns to Outworld, but resolves to use the ways of Edenia to make it a better place under her rule.]]
-->"Though Edenian by blood, I am not an Edenian. I am an Outworlder."
* CoolChair: Her "Queen For a Day" intro in ''11'' has her being escorted onto the ring on a very ornate throne.
* DamselInDistress: She ends up briefly imprisoned by Shao Kahn in ''9'' and can be seen chained up in that game's rendition of the Arena if she is not selected. Spends some time in a cell in MK: Annihilation and other media, usually saved by Liu Kang and friends, being the second "damsel in distress of MK" to Sonya Blade.
* ADayInTheLimelight:
** In ''VideoGame/MortalKombat9'', she's the focus of Chapter 9.
** In ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11'', she's the focus of Chapter 7.
* DesignatedGirlFight: With Mileena. Justified since, between the two, ItsPersonal.
* DeadpanSnarker: Kitana does this quite a bit more in pre-fight banter in ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX'', especially if she's facing a comedic character.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler:In ''9'', she passes away in Liu Kang's arms after a heartwrenching speech to her lover moments after Sindel kills most of Raiden's warriors]].
-->'''Kitana:''' [[spoiler:"I wish we had met [[IronicEcho under different circumstances..."]]]]
* DistaffCounterpart: Her inclusion in the roster for ''II'' was to serve as one for Sub-Zero, with her dynamic with Mileena mirroring that of him and Scorpion.
* DownloadableContent:
** In ''9'', Klassic Kitana from ''MKII''.
** ''MKX'' gives her a Jingu Costume as part of the Kombat Pack's "Feudal Set." She also gets her Klassic Kostume again, as well as her ''MKII'' fatality.
* DualWielding: Her signature weapons are two bladed fans that can be used as projectiles and create small tornadoes.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: It took multiple timelines for it to happen but [[spoiler:by defeating Shao Kahn and managing to gain the allegiance of both Tarkatan and Shokan, Kitana became the new leader of Outworld, finally peacefully uniting all denizens of Outworld. And in the good ending, Liu Kang managed to prevent Kronika from going to the Dawn of Time, allowing him to reunite with Kitana and together watching the Sands of Time]]. [[spoiler:It's rendered non-canon by ''1'', although Kitana's arcade ending with her becoming a Titan has been turned into a branching timeline, allowing her and Liu Kang to both be Keepers of Time and be reunited as timelines intersect.]]
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler:Kronika's EvilPlan in the official launch trailer of ''11'' forces Kitana to form an alliance with ''Baraka and Sheeva'']].
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Jacqui seems to be rather...''[[DistractedByTheSexy impressed]]'' by her in one of their ''MKX'' interactions.
-->'''Jacqui:''' [[StupidSexyFlanders Wow, you really are beautiful...]]
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: She tries to keep her attraction to Liu Kang a secret, but absolutely everyone can tell there's chemistry between them.
* EveryoneHasStandards: She keeps her word to Baraka on giving Tarkatans equal rights and benefits as Kahn, but she does ''not'' tolerate their cannibalistic and murderous traditions. [[GoodIsNotSoft No exceptions.]]
* FanservicePack: Starting in ''Deadly Alliance'' (for example, both of her outfits have ''plunging'' necklines), but it's taken up a few notches in ''9'', where Kitana sports her most revealing outfit to date. Subverted in ''X'', but her Revenant and Dark Empress costumes show some fanservice.
* FootPopping: When delivering her KissOfDeath.
* FourStarBadass: Becomes her sister's Supreme Commander in the new timeline.
* GoKartingWithBowser: Or rather, "Playing Patty-Cake with Mileena", which is exactly what she does for her Friendship in ''[=MK11=]''.
* HeartbrokenBadass: In regards to Liu Kang in the original timeline.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Jade. The two have been childhood friends for nearly ''10,000 years''. She tells Kotal "Hurt Jade and you answer to me".
* HighHeelFaceTurn: In ''9'', her attraction to Liu Kang plays a big factor in her defection from Shao Kahn's forces.
* TheHighQueen: In ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11'', [[spoiler:Kotal Kahn [[YouAreInCommandNow names her empress of Outworld]] after she unites the Tarkatan and the Shokan and then defeats Shao Kahn]].
* HitmanWithAHeart: An assassin by trade, and has never denied it. Given her advanced age, she likely has a higher kill-count than ''any'' of the hero characters.
* IconicSequelCharacter: She didn't appear in the first game, but ever since her debut in the second game, any of her absences from the roster are rectified in an UpdatedRerelease.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: She has a brief crack at this to [[spoiler:Sindel]] in ''9''. [[spoiler:It didn't work.]]
* InflatingBodyGag: On the giving [[note]](and receiving if mirror match is taken into account)[[/note]] end taken to lethal extremes in ''MKII'' where her infamous KissOfDeath fatality inflates her victims to their literal bursting point before they violently explode, she later swaps out that for BigHeadMode upon her return in ''MKIII Ultimate'' (due to it reusing Kabal's bike pump fatality assets) though she would regain a shoddy version of it in one of the 3-D entries and a more grotesque version of it in ''VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse'' before it got phased out completely.
* InterspeciesRomance: With Liu Kang. She's Edenian, he's an Earthrealm human.
* IWasToldThereWouldBeCake: She delivers one to her defeated opponents as a Friendship in ''MKII''.
* KickTheDog: Her treatment of Mileena can easily fall into this. Kitana constantly derides her as a monster and harshly refuses to acknowledge her or the circumstances (that she is basically a child). This serves nothing more than to make Mileena fall further into evil and associate with terrible people. However, there are instances where Kitana realizes her mistakes and tries to make amends; her ''9'' ending sees Mileena pull a HeelFaceTurn when Kitana accepts her, and dialogue with Jade in ''11'' implies Kitana trying again.
* KillerRabbit: A literal one. When performing an Animality in ''Ultimate [=MK3=]'', she turns into a white rabbit and then attacks the enemy in some savage manner.
* KissOfDeath: Which [[PopGoesTheHuman inflates]] the victims 'til they explode, this even includes herself if both Kitanas are pitted against each other in a mirror match.
* [[CombatHandFan Kombat Hand Fan]]: Her weapons are a pair of folding fans with blades in them.
* [[CombatStilettos Kombat Stilettos]]: She's had these in her outfits from ''Deadly Alliance'' to ''X''.
** They're back for vengeance in ''11''. They even play the key part in her Fatal Blow!
* LadyOfWar: One of the most graceful female fighters, yet no less violent than the others. In ''[=MK9=]'' she defeats both Johnny and Smoke one-on-two, and is later forced to fight her best friend (Jade) who is also formidable fighter in her own fight. Later, [[spoiler:she defeats Mileena and then ''Shang Tsung'' before literally dragging her to Shao Khan by the collar]].
* LatexSpaceSuit: Her living self's outfit in ''11''.
* LeotardOfPower: Her early outfits, such as her ones from ''II'', ''3'' and ''4''.
%%* LongHairIsFeminine: Best seen in her ending screen in ''II'', yet also in ''9''.
* MindOverMatter: She sometimes uses telekinesis when wielding her war fans.
* MsFanservice: ''Especially in [[{{Stripperiffic}} 9]]'', she wears quite the revealing outfit and is a remarkably beautiful woman. Even with the fanservice toned down in ''11'', she still shows off her beauty in skin-tight suits and some of her outfits show some cleavage.
* MysteriousVeil: Almost always appears with the lower face variant of this.
* NavelDeepNeckline: Her outfit in ''MKIII'' is a ninja leotard with a plunging neckline that reaches her stomach.
* NiceGirl: She's quite kindhearted and affectionate, though that [[BewareTheNiceOnes does not mean that she'll]] [[GoodIsNotSoft take crap lying down.]]
* NobleFugitive: She becomes one in both timelines, after being sentenced to death by Shao Khan; she escapes on her own in the original, and is rescued from a public execution in the timeline of ''9'' by Liu Kang, both versions causing her to join the side of Earthrealm.
* NobleTopEnforcer: Becomes this in both timelines, and defects to the side of Earthrealm.
%%* OffWithHisHead: One of her Fatalities.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: She comes into the fight by sitting on the throne in ''[=MK11=]''. She, of course, is getting out of it to chat with her opponents and properly doing the fighting.
* PaperFanOfDoom: Her weapon and IconicItem. They appeared to just be paper fans in ''MKII'', but in more recent versions they strongly resemble [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_fan Japanese war fans,]] most likely ''tessen''.
* PerpetualFrowner: Unintentionally. Due to the shape of her eyebrows in ''11'', Kitana looks to be perpetually upset, even when she's smiling happily.
* PrettyPrincessPowerhouse: She may be a princess, but she's a fierce combatant.
* PrimAndProperBun: Her hairstyle (shared with every other female ninja who existed as of ''[=MK3=]'') in ''[=MK3=]'' and ''4''.
* RaceLift: Kitana is depicted with explicitly Asian facial features in ''[=MK11=]'' after being portrayed as an AmbiguouslyBrown mix of Caucasian and Middle-Eastern in the prior titles.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: She may look like a young woman, but she has lived for ten thousand years. Even if she were to have a relationship with Liu Kang, she'd outlive him several times over. [[spoiler:Or, as far as the new timeline was concerned, she ''would'' have, but both are now reigning over the Netherrealm post-mortem.]] Though due to Liu Kang being the Champion of the Mortal Kombat tournament [[spoiler:(At least, until he dies at Raiden's hands, though he's still not aging as one of Quan Chi's revenants)]], he can't [[TheAgeless die from age]].
* RebelliousPrincess:
** After she learned the truth behind king Jerrod and Sindel, she rebelled against Shao Kahn's rule, while still remaining the rightful princess of Edenia.
** Also becomes this in the new timeline, where she sides with Earthrealm after learning about Mileena and how Shao Kahn used her as a tool.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: When Kitana sharpens her fans for a damage boost in ''X'', her eyes glow red.
* RequisiteRoyalRegalia: Her design in ''9'' gives her a tiara in place of her headband from ''II''.
%%* TheRival: Mileena.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Kitana is frequently on the front lines in defending her realm and Earth from nefarious forces.
* SensibleHeroesSkimpyVillains: A DownplayedTrope between her and Mileena. While Kitana's outfits do show some skin, Mileena's have been more revealing since ''Deception''.
* SensualSpandex: Her alternate outfit in ''Deadly Alliance'' (which became her main outfit in ''Unchained'' and ''Armageddon''). [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/mkwikia/images/0/02/Edenia_Golf_Outfitters.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110308212717 The ad for the Edenia Golf Outfitters]] from ''DA'' shows [[MaleGaze a closeup of her backside]]. In ''11'', her outfits consist of this.
* SheIsTheKing: After she defeats Shao Kahn in 11, Kotal Kahn retires from the throne and declares her to be the new Kahn of outworld.
* ShesNotMyGirlfriend: Or rather "He's Not My Boyfriend" about Liu Kang towards Tanya and herself in one of her intros in ''X''.
-->'''Tanya:''' "So, you and Liu Kang..."\
'''Kitana:''' "None of your business."\
'''Tanya:''' "I'll take that as a yes."
* ShipTease: With Liu Kang. There's a romantic subtext between the two despite the two telling others they're JustFriends. Raiden, Jade, and even ''Cetrion'' like to think otherwise.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She likes Liu Kang because he's a humble, compassionate, and kindhearted man who refused to kill her after her failed assassination attempt on him and instead decided to pretend it never happened so she doesn't get punished by Shao Kahn.
* StanceSystem: Has Ba Gua in her appearances in the 3D games. Also had Eagle Claw-style Kung Fu in ''Deadly Alliance'' and ''Unchained'', which becomes Khameleon's style in ''Armageddon''.
* StarCrossedLovers: With Liu Kang in both timelines.
* StatuesqueStunner: 5'9".
* StrangerInAFamiliarLand: [[spoiler:Her Tower Ending in ''11'' has her use the Sands of Time to remake Edenia, only to realize that the entire culture is alien to her, having been robbed away from Edenia as a child. She may be Edenian by blood, but she was raised an Outworlder]].
* {{Stripperiffic}}: She was always stripperiffic even in comparison to the other ladies, but in ''[=MK9=]'' she'd be more modestly dressed in a pair of shoelaces.
* SwappedRoles: In ''3,'' her mother is BrainwashedAndCrazy, forcing her to fight against her own mother. Come ''Deception,'' the situation is reversed.
%%* ThongOfShielding
* TookALevelInKindness: Dialogue with other Outworlders in ''11'' hint Kitana was a [[SpoiledBrat haughty girl]] in her youth that loved the privileged life under Shao Kahn until she grew older and [[IHatePastMe realized her life was built on the labor of slaves.]]
* TokenGoodTeammate: She and Jade are basically the only members of Outworld's forces to not be a total monster, until at least Kotal's rule.
* TragicKeepsake: Her glaive and staff in her "Mournful" variation in ''X'' [[spoiler:are Jade's]].
* TrueBlueFemininity: One of her most famous traits in her association with the color blue. All of her outfits have blue as their primary color.
* WarriorPrincess: Do not mistake her title for a lack of fighting ability.
* WholeCostumeReference: Has a DLC outfit based on ComicBook/{{Catwoman}} in ''11''.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: Kitana and Liu Kang's relationship was fraught with difficulties that prevented the two from wedding or consummating. For the most part, that comes to an end in ''11'', where the two (hesitantly) decide to pursue a relationship, with several characters going so far as to acknowledge that the two are a couple. In the end, she and Liu Kang are the only two beings left to use the Sands of Time as they see fit. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, she is not canonically the one to remain with Liu Kang, as Raiden is the one to guide him, however, this Kitana has been put into an alternate timeline where she defeated Kronika and became a Keeper of Time. After the Fire God Liu Kang calles her, they reunite and kiss passionately.]]
* WorldsMostBeautifulWoman: She is considered the most beautiful woman in Outworld; nearly all her interactions with opponents in ''X'' are them praising her beauty which does wonders to Kitana's vanity and arrogance, and TheHero Liu Kang, of course, falls for her.

-->[[caption-width-right:300:''"I am a victim no longer."'']]
* AdaptationalVillainy: While Kitana was on the heroes' side in the original timeline after her HighHeelFaceTurn, the new timeline adds more CharacterDevelopment to her, and she is no longer the heroic princess we once knew. After she was [[ReforgedIntoAMinion revived as a brainwashed undead minion]] for Quan Chi at the end of ''9'', she blames Raiden for sealing her fate as a revenant. In ''MKX'', Kitana begins to [[EvilFeelsGood assert her current status as an evil revenant, as being one allows her to be the perpetrator.]] [[spoiler:And her ''MKX'' ending reveals that she is shown a vision of the original timeline by the mysterious female entity that possessed Jade in her ''[=MK9=]'' Arcade Ladder ending. 161* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: As a revenant, she has a skin color of [[UndeathlyPallor grayish-white]], complete with VolcanicVeins, EvilCostumeSwitch and GlowingEyesOfDoom.
* ArchEnemy: Both she and Liu Kang are this to Raiden ([[spoiler:who himself [[FaceHeelTurn has gone rogue]] after his corruption at the end of ''MKX'']]), blaming him for their deaths and the deaths of other fallen heroes.
* AssholeVictim: She's such a callous antithesis of everything that the living Kitana stands for, [[spoiler:that you'd be hard pressed to feel sorry for her in ''Aftermath'' when Shao Kahn and Sindel kill her]].
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: [[spoiler:She and Liu Kang become the Netherrealm's new rulers]].
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Subverted. By the end of X, she remains (un)dead]].
%%* TheBaroness: Sexpot variety.
* BattleCouple: With Liu Kang, [[spoiler:[[RulingCouple as both of them now run the Netherrealm]]]].
* BeingGoodSucks: Feels much better as a revenant, as it allows her to be the perpetrator.
* {{Brainwashed}}: This is what happens to her in ''MKX'', as she ends up [[ReforgedIntoAMinion resurrected and brainwashed]] to serve Quan Chi and Shinnok. Kitana seems to appreciate his status as a revenant, and she and Liu Kang are seen as the CoDragons to Quan Chi in the game.
* BerserkButton: Anything related to Raiden after the events of ''VideoGame/MortalKombat9''. [[spoiler:This is most evident in her ''MKX'' arcade ending, where she received visions of the original timeline, and came to despise the thunder god for meddling with the timeline.]]
* CameBackWrong: Like Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Jax and the younger Sub-Zero, she is revived as a revenant by Quan Chi.
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes from a fiercely loyal assassin under Shao Kahn's orders to being a kind-hearted princess of Edenia to a [[spoiler:vindictive and devious queen of the Netherealm]].
* CleavageWindow: [[spoiler:A boob window in her Dark Empress costume]].
* CorruptTheCutie: Kitana becomes increasingly cynical after she CameBackWrong as a revenant.
* CoDragons: She and Liu Kang seem to be this to Quan Chi and Shinnok. [[spoiler:The two even become the Netherrealm's co-rulers after Shinnok's downfall at the end of ''Mortal Kombat X''.]]
* CurbStompCushion: In ''Aftermath'', she lasts a good 25 seconds against [[spoiler:Shao Kahn and manages to even graze him in the chest before dying]].
* DarkActionGirl: Starts to appreciate her form as a revenant, and [[spoiler:willfully becomes the empress of the Netherrealm at the end of ''Mortal Kombat X'']].
* TheDarkSide: Willfully becomes a revenant minion of Quan Chi after she CameBackWrong. [[spoiler:She and Liu Kang later become the Netherrealm's new rulers.]]
* TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget: As is with Liu Kang, she becomes a revenant willfully following the fallen Elder God Shinnok, and [[spoiler:the ending cutscene in ''X'' shows her and Liu Kang running the Netherrealm after Shinnok's downfall]].
* DarkerAndEdgier: Since her FaceHeelTurn at the end of ''9'', she TookALevelInJerkass, considering how she felt Raiden was manipulating her.
* DealWithTheDevil: Willfully becomes CoDragons alongside Liu Kang to [[TheDarkSide Shinnok and Quan Chi]] after becoming a revenant.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Her eagerness in accepting her new form as a revenant, combined with how she felt Raiden manipulated her [[spoiler:manifests into her becoming the new ruler of the Netherrealm alongside Liu Kang following Shinnok's defeat at the end of ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX''.]]
* DemotedToDragon: After being the DragonAscendant for some time after Shinnok’s downfall, She and Liu kang became Kronika’s first recruits.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: In Kitana's ''MKX'' Arcade Ladder ending, [[spoiler:her revenant self is shown a vision of the original, unaltered timeline by the mysterious female entity that possessed Jade in her ''[=MK9=]'' Arcade Ladder ending. Learning of what could have been, Kitana is understandably dismayed by the revelation, her current predicament, and blamed Raiden for this]].
* DisproportionateRetribution: In her Arcade Ladder Mode in ''X'', she's willing to start a [[DuelToTheDeath battle to the death]] with another warrior because they're is ''in her way'' (the reason she gives Jax, Kenshi, Raiden and D'Vorah), they're wasting her time (what she tells to Bo' Rai Cho), or because she wants a challenge (what she tells Kung Lao and Jacqui Briggs, although she also says neither fits the bill) or that she simply wants to fight, which she tells everyone else she doesn't have some in-universe grudge against. Of course, she's in ''very'' bad mood this time around, for many reasons given on this page.
* DragonAscendant: [[spoiler:She and Liu Kang become the Netherrealm's new rulers following the defeat of Shinnok at the end of ''X'']].
* DrivenToVillainy: Starts to embrace her new status as a revenant like Liu Kang, [[spoiler:[[DragonAscendant and both willfully become]] the [[HellHasNewManagement Netherrealm's new rulers]] after Shinnok's defeat]].
* TheEmpress: [[spoiler:She becomes the empress of the Netherrealm, ruling jointly with Liu Kang after Shinnok's defeat at the end of ''Mortal Kombat X''.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Liu Kang. [[spoiler:The two serve as Quan Chi and Shinnok's CoDragons, and [[DragonAscendant later become the]] [[HellHasNewManagement Netherrealm's co-rulers]] after Shinnok's demise at the end of ''X''.]][[spoiler:Her dialogue with Fire God Liu Kang subverts this hard though, as she blames him for her death and planned not to join him in the new era.]]

Kitana adopts this [[EvilMakeover much]] [[EvilWearsBlack eviler]] costume and has FemmeFatalons like corrupted Raiden and revenant Kung Lao. Not only does this suit have more armor than regular Kitana with SpikesOfVillainy, it also has a boob window and conspicuously enhances her cleavage.]]
* EvilFeelsGood: Similar to Liu Kang, Kitana actually feels better as a revenant as it allows her to be the perpetrator, despising Raiden for condemning her to such a fate. However, her ladder ending suggests that [[spoiler:she remembers and much prefers her old life as a princess of Edenia and doesn't like being a Revenant as much as she claims]].
* EvilFormerFriend: To any of the heroes that are alive (Johnny Cage, Sonya, Kenshi, Fujin, etc.), have switched to the side of good (Sareena) or have been restored to life (Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Jax).
* EvilMakeover: Like Liu Kang, she goes from a heroic character to a merciless revenant and her costume becomes [[DarkerAndEdgier metallic]] [[SensibleHeroesSkimpyVillains but more revealing]] [[ReforgedIntoAMinion post-brainwashing]]. [[spoiler:She wears more armor after becoming the Netherrealm's empress.]]
* EvilWearsBlack: See the EvilCostumeSwitch trope above.
* EyeColorChange: After being revived as a revenant, Kitana's eyes are shown to have changed from black to reddish-yellow, signifying her complete fall to TheDarkSide.
* FaceHeelTurn: As is with Liu Kang, she's one of the few heroes who has willingly become evil, more or less thanks to her hatred towards Raiden as an evil, undead revenant. While fighting Jax, she actually mentions to him that she enjoys being a revenant. [[spoiler:And in TheStinger, she is installed as the [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen empress of]] [[HellHasNewManagement the Netherrealm]], meaning she is now a direct foe of Earthrealm alongside Liu Kang.]]
* FallenHero: Becomes one in the process, as she begins to enjoy her new status as a revenant in ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX''.
* FanservicePack: Her Revenant and [[spoiler:[[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Dark Empress]]]] costumes show some fanservice.
* FemmeFatalons: [[spoiler:Kitana gains these in her [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Dark Empress]] costume in ''X''. They are white, unlike the ones on Dark Raiden or Revenant Kung Lao, who have black ones]].
* FemmeFatale: Becomes this as a revenant.
* ForcedIntoEvil: Kitana's soul is resurrected as a revenant under Quan Chi's service, [[spoiler:and remains trapped as one after the necromancer is killed off by Scorpion]].
* FormFittingWardrobe: As a revenant, and later on, [[spoiler:[[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen as empress of the Netherrealm]]]].
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: As with all revenants and with [[spoiler:Dark Raiden]], [[RedEyesTakeWarning her eyes turn golden-red]] in ''MKX''.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: [[spoiler:She and Liu Kang are the Netherrealm's new rulers]].
* GoodGirlGoneBad: Becomes this after her she CameBackWrong as a revenant, and actually [[EvilFeelsGood appreciates this new form]].
%%* HellBentForLeather: [[spoiler:When she becomes [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen the empress of the Netherrealm]]. The outfit looks very similar to Maleficent]].
* HellHasNewManagement: [[spoiler:Is co-ruling the Netherrealm alongside Liu Kang at the end of ''MKX'']].
* HighCollarOfDoom: [[spoiler:[[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Her Dark Empress]]]] costume has this.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:In ''Aftermath'', Shao Kahn hammers her so that she staggers backwards onto the blade of Sindel's Kwan Dao. That Kwan Dao is already sticking through Revenant Jade's body.]]
* ImpossiblyLowNeckline: [[spoiler:Her [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Dark Empress costume]]]] has a CleavageWindow.
* {{Irony}}: Jax finds it ironic that Kitana is enjoying her new status as a revenant because it allows her to be the perpetrator and that she felt she was being manipulated by Raiden. Ironically, she and the other revenants were brainwashed by Quan Chi, and if they were to be restored to life, they would have a big HeelRealization.
* ItsAllAboutMe: One of the reasons she harbors so much hatred toward Raiden is that she learned that, had he ''not'' [[SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong altered the timeline]], she would have eventually beaten Shao Khan, claimed her birthright, and ruled Edenia in a new Golden Age. [[WasItReallyWorthIt Earthrealm would have been destroyed, and everyone she cared about would probably be dead]], but by the time she's learned this revelation, [[TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget she has fallen so far]] that she feels nothing but anger at what Raiden "stole" from her.
* [[CombatStilettos Kombat Stilettos]]: Has these in her Revenant and [[spoiler:Dark Empress]] costumes.
* LightIsNotGood: Wears [[EvilCostumeSwitch darker]] [[SensibleHeroesSkimpyVillains and skimpier]] [[PaintItBlack outfits]] after her FaceHeelTurn.
* MeetTheNewBoss: [[spoiler:TheStinger at the end of ''X'' shows that [[HellHasNewManagement she and Liu Kang]] have become the new rulers of the Netherrealm]].
* MoreThanMindControl: Like Liu Kang, she starts to appreciate her new form as a revenant, as it allows her to be the perpetrator as since she tends to get tricked or manipulated by other villains, and felt Raiden was manipulating her.
* NeverBeHurtAgain: After spending her life under Shao Kahn's thumb and being (as she felt she was) manipulated by Raiden, she states this as an advantage to her new life as a revenant as it allows ''her'' to be the perpetrator.
-->'''Kitana:''' It suits me. I am a victim no longer.
* NeverMyFault: As a Revenant she has a bad case of this, if she is not blaming Raiden for her death [[spoiler:then she's blaming the recently deified Liu Kang, ignoring that it was her choice to defy and fight Shao Kahn]].
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler:Her and Liu Kang's StunnedSilence and perplexed looks in response to Dark Raiden's BadassBoast at the end of ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX'']].
* PaintItBlack: [[spoiler:[[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Her Dark Empress]] costume fits this to a T. She may have pulled a page out of [[JerkassGods Raiden's]] EvilCostumeSwitch]].
* PrimAndProperBun: Her revenant form in ''X'' wears her hair up in this style due to her costume being overall inspired by Kitana's attire in ''[=MK3=]'' and ''[=MK4=]'' (where all of the female ninjas shared this hairstyle).
* ProtagonistJourneyToVillain: Starts off as a loyal stepdaughter and assassin for Shao Kahn in ''[=MK9=]'', she transforms into a troubled, kindhearted princess of Edenia and one of Earthrealm's courageous heroes to a [[FaceHeelTurn vengeful revenant]] for the Netherrealm who wants to lash out those who tricked, manipulated, or betrayed her, [[spoiler:and later becoming [[DragonAscendant its co-ruler]] [[HellHasNewManagement alongside Liu Kang]] at the end of ''X'']].
* RageAgainstTheHeavens: Like Liu Kang, she is willing to help Shinnok overthrow the Elder Gods.
* ReforgedIntoAMinion: Brainwashed to become a revenant under Shinnok and Quan Chi at the end of ''9''.
* SensibleHeroesSkimpyVillains: [[spoiler:Her Dark Empress skin has a CleavageWindow, [[HellBentForLeather looks leathery]], and is reminiscent of either Catwoman's or Maleficent's costumes]].
* ShadowArchetype: Serves as one to her past self in ''11''. Revenant Kitana is what would happen if Kitana became the daughter Shao Kahn wanted her to be. In other words, if Kitana acted like Mileena. Haughty, uncompromising, and indifferent to the suffering of her people, Revenant Kitana cares only about using her status to take what she desires and make those she feels has wronged her suffer under her rule, upholding her adoptive father's desire for Outworld "being the conqueror and never the conquered". Ironically, this makes her a {{Foil}} to Mileena rather than the other way around. Unlike Revenant Kitana, Mileena still retains her sense of self and only acts the way she does because she wants to be loved by her family, especially her "father" Shao Kahn and, despite their rivalry, Kitana herself. Revenant Kitana doesn't see any value in love at all, not even for her own mother and fellow Revenant Sindel, or even her "husband" Revenant Liu Kang. [[spoiler:Especially after the latter gets fused with Past Liu Kang and Raiden to become Fire God Liu Kang.]]
* SourOutsideSadInside: A lot of her aggression comes from the pain and misery that her FaceHeelTurn brought her in the first place.
* SpikesOfVillainy: [[spoiler:[[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Her Dark Empress]]]] costume has these.
* SpyCatsuit: [[spoiler:[[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Her Dark Empress]]]] costume fits this to a T.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: See the SensibleHeroesSkimpyVillains trope above.
* StunnedSilence: In the stinger for ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX'', [[spoiler:in response to Dark Raiden's BadassBoast]].
* StupidSexyFlanders: She has that effect on Jacqui.
-->'''Jacqui:''' Wow, you really are beautiful...\
'''Kitana:''' But ''deadly.''
* TookALevelInJerkass [[TookALevelInCynic and Cynicism]]: In ''X''. Her pre-battle intros with most characters are… less than pleasant, to the point where you'd expect ''Mileena'' to say the things she does. This might be explained by several other characters during pre-battle intros that she is upset with Raiden from his actions in ''9''. [[spoiler:More accurately, the fact that she's canonically a revenant may account for some of this.]]
-->'''Takeda:''' I never considered you an enemy!\
'''Kitana:''' I never considered you at all.\
'''Takeda:''' …Now that's just hurtful.
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:Whereas personal obligations kept them apart in the original timeline, ''Mortal Kombat X'' sees Liu Kang and Kitana finally together in an official relationship. All it took was their deaths, "revival" as revenants thanks to Quan Chi's magic and a vacancy in the [[EvilPowerVacuum Netherrealm power vacuum]] with [[KilledOffForReal the death of Quan Chi]] and [[FateWorseThanDeath defeat of Shinnok]]]].
* TranshumanTreachery: Like Liu Kang, Kitana seems to appreciate her new status as a revenant.
* UndeathlyPallor: A grayish-white skin after being revived as a brainwashed minion.
* TheUnfettered: Starts to appreciate her new form as a revenant. Jax and Sareena even lament how Quan Chi's magic has slowly turned the remaining revenants into killing machines in the 25-year gap.
* UnholyMatrimony: [[spoiler:[[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen She becomes the empress of the Netherrealm]], [[HellHasNewManagement ruling jointly with Liu Kang]] at the end of ''Mortal Kombat X'']].
* VolcanicVeins: She gains these upon being [[ReforgedIntoAMinion revived as a brainwashed minion of Quan Chi]].
* WillNotBeAVictim: A dark variation. She likes being a revenant as it [[EvilFeelsGood allows her to be the perpetrator]] rather than a victim as she felt she was under Raiden's guidance. [[spoiler:''11'' shows that this is something she still carried over from being raised by [[AbusiveParents Shao Kahn]].]]
-->'''Kitana:''' It suits me. I am a victim no longer.
* WolverineClaws: In her Revenant skin.

----
!! Tropes related to Kitana in The New Era
[[folder:Tropes related to Kitana in The New Era]]
Tropes that appear across all of Kitana's appearances from ''VideoGame/MortalKombat1'' onwards.
----
* AdaptationalAngstDowngrade: Aside from [[spoiler:the deaths of both her parents]], this version of Kitana has a much happier life than the previous two versions. Her home realm was never conquered by Shao, Mileena is truly her sister rather than a clone created to replace her in the event she discovers the truth of her origins and [[spoiler:she at least got to spend some time with her mother before the latter died.]]
* AdaptationalRelationshipOverhaul:
** Due to the fact that this Kitana is not the love interest of Liu Kang in the New Era [[spoiler:as he's still in love with the Kitana of the previous timeline]], she now has two men with the potential to win her heart in Raiden and Johnny Cage. Funny enough, due to Raiden's status as the mortal champion of Earthrealm, he perfectly slots in the same role Liu Kang himself previously filled prior to the New Era. Also fits this for Johnny Cage who married a 4 star general in the last timeline.
** She was Mileena's mortal enemy in the previous timelines, with her being disgusted by Mileena being a half-Tarkatan clone. Here, being twin sisters, they're close and loving with one another, and while their personalities somewhat clash, there's no real enmity between them.
* AdaptationalWimp: She loses all of her matches in the story, which is contrary to how Kitana was one of the strongest characters in the previous two timelines.
* AgeLift: Kitana was usually the eldest between her and Mileena, as the latter was a clone made shortly after Kitana was adopted by Shao Kahn on the first timeline and during the first game of the second one. Here, Kitana is not only the same age as Mileena, but she is the younger of the two twins.
* AlienArtsAreAppreciated: After Johnny Cage convinced her to go to the movies, she gushes to him that it was a "transcendent experience".
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Both Johnny Cage and Raiden express an interest in Kitana (she finds Cage amusing at best, and considers Raiden's crush sweet, but unwelcome), though according to Tanya, she has her eye on someone else.
* BerserkButton: Doesn't like to be referred as "Eye Candy", if her pre-fight intro with Johnny Cage is an indication.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Kitana is much more polite and less intimidating than her mother or sister, but she is not someone to be taken lightly, especially if a villain threatens her family.
* BlueIsHeroic: As always, Kitana's attire is a deep, royal blue, and she is the more heroic character between herself and Mileena (though the difference is much more marginal here, due to Mileena's AdaptationalHeroism).
* DeadpanSnarker: Despite her polite and humble personality, Kitana is willing to let a few quips out, especially if she's in a playful mood.
-->'''Mileena:''' Who told you [[[SecretRelationship about Mileena and Tanya]]]?\
'''Kitana:''' No one; I have ''eyes''.

-->'''Kenshi:''' I've been looking forward to this fight!\
'''Kitana:''' You enjoy losing that much, Earthrealmer?

-->'''Kung Lao:''' If ''Raiden'' impressed you, you should see ''me'' fight.\
'''Kitana:''' So I'll respect ''him'' even more?
* DemotedToExtra: She plays a much smaller role than in the reboot trilogy; while she's still part of the playable roster, in the story mode much more emphasis is put on Sindel and Mileena, since they're the empress and heir, with Kitana having little role in Outworld politics.
* FantasticRacism: Downplayed; some pre-fight intros have Kitana express some discomfort with Ashrah being a demon, but she doesn't express outright hatred and Ashrah herself admits that Kitana isn't wrong to be wary of most demons.
* FourStarBadass: [[spoiler:After Mileena is crowned as Empress, Kitana is appointed to replace General Shao as the new Supreme Commander of Outworld's armies and proves her new credentials by spearheading a decisive victory over the rogue general. Her victory over the rebellion was so crushing that Shao considered further conventional military conflict untenable, [[SealedEvilInACan turning to Onaga out of desperation]]]].
* HumbleHero: Kitana is uncomfortable with praise, even responding to Ashrah's claim that [[IncorruptiblePurePureness her soul has no evil]] by saying "that can't possibly be right".
* IHaveNoSon: In a pre-kombat dialogue, when Syzoth wants to give her a message from her cousin, she tells him to burn it because said cousin has been banished.
* IfYouEverDoAnythingToHurtHer: She gives Tanya the shovel talk in one of their fight intros.
-->'''Kitana:''' If you are toying with my sister's emotions--\
'''Tanya:''' Rest assured, Princess. I am not.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: According to Ashrah in her intros with Mileena, Kitana has no evil in her heart.
* KissOfDeath: As a callback to the older titles[[note]]where Kitana had a fatality where her opponent suddenly exploded after she kissed them for no apparent reason[[/note]], her second fatality involves her giving her opponent a kiss that acts as the delivery mechanism for some kind of spell that [[MakeThemRot causes them to melt horrifically]].
* LittleSisterInstinct: Kitana is the younger twin, and she is dedicated to protecting Mileena, and frequently displays concern for her as she is stricken with Tarkat. She also gives Tanya a ''very'' stern warning against toying with Mileena's emotions in one of their intros.
* MakeThemRot: She possesses some kind of magic that rapidly, and [[{{Squick}} graphically]], causes her opponent's flesh to decompose from without and within, which [[KissOfDeath she delivers via kiss]].
* MatureYoungerSibling: While Mileena is [[AdaptationalIntelligence much more mature than her previous self]], she's still more impulsive and hot-headed than Kitana, to the point that some in Outworld (including, occasionally, Sindel) think she'd make a better Empress than her older twin.
* NiceGirl: Both the story and pre-fight intros portray Kitana as humble and polite, always looking out for her family, lacking her sister's impusiveness or her mother's [[PoliticallyIncorrectHero prejudices]], and being willing to take time for training and relaxation with her friends and allies despite her responsibilities.
* NoodleIncident: An intro with Kenshi has Kitana admit that he isn't the first blind swordsman she's fought.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** While she's typically the very picture of grace and humility, Kitana is ''not'' one for false modesty; an intro with Shao has her proclaim that her family has brought glory to Outworld's throne, and when Smoke positively compares her with [[spoiler:Harumi Shirai]], Kitana remarks that [[spoiler:Kuai Liang]] has excellent taste.
** Although she accepted her loss to Raiden in the tournament, an intro with Sindel have her wonder how the monk managed to defeat her, and intros with Raiden have her hope for a rematch.
* NumberTwo: [[spoiler:Following Mileena's ascension to Outworld's throne, Kitana serves as commander of her armies, as well as her sister's right-hand-woman and heir-apparent.]]
* OutOfFocus: She lacks a dedicated episode in the Story Mode and her role in the story is mainly to protect her sister Mileena, [[spoiler:unless you pick her in the Battle of Armageddon]].
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Kitana may be a cultured, popular princess, but she's also a well-trained and skilled kombatant, giving Raiden a run for his money at the tournament, and, in the post-story, [[spoiler:disproving the doubts of the army she now commands by leading them to a crushing victory over General Shao's rebels]].
* SecretSecretKeeper: She's aware of Mileena and Tanya's feelings for each other, and keeps the situation under wraps to protect her sister from the potential scandal.
* TrueBlueFemininity: As usual, Kitana is a graceful and poised princess who dresses in blue.
* UndyingLoyalty: No matter their differences, Kitana is absolutely loyal to Mileena, rankling at any suggestion that she would make a better Empress than her sister (she all but spits in Shang Tsung's face when he suggests usurping Mileena), [[spoiler:and serves her loyally as commander of Outworld's armies]].
