!!Gustave XIII
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gustave_the_steel_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Gustave the Steel]]
Heir to the throne of the Finney kingdom, abruptly exiled at the tender age of seven after failing to manifest any Anima during the Firebrand Ceremony. Forced to live in the slums, Gustave grows up embittered, torn between half-believing the ignorant bile spewed by others and aching for a chance to prove them all wrong...
----
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: People that know of his anima condition aren't especially kind to him. Even- [[ArchnemesisDad no, especially]]- family members.
* AntiHero: Doesn't seem to be an especially ''bad'' person and it's worth noting that [[spoiler: his death]] causes a ''hell'' of a lot of instability, suggesting that the world was a far better place with than without him... but he's still done some very pragmatic and ruthless things in the name of his own personal ambition or in the name of good old-fashioned revenge.
* TheBlacksmith: Started as an apprentice in his early teens. It was here that he forged his own steel dagger[=/=]shortsword, and presumably gained the knowledge to forge or at least commission the [[{{BFS}} significantly larger weapon]] we see him wielding in his 30s.
* BloodKnight: When he's seen fighting in the game, it's mostly either to challenge himself, cope emotionally with some issue or another[[note]]He's in the caverns near Jade fighting monsters the day his mother passes[[/note]], or just because he's flat out bored. At one point he randomly pops up in a Wil Knights scenario (apparently the only time the game's two leads meet each other) on the other side of Sandail, massive steel sword and all, for the latter reason.
* BrokenAce: From the point of view of his friends and family. He's ''the'' BadassNormal of his country and generation as an individual swordsman, and a dangerous battle commander, and even shows shades of being [[TheChessmaster politically savvy]] - but the fact that he can't use Anima and some of the issues that resulted from that in his childhood make him prone to bouts of self-loathing and depression. Most of his inner circle spends as much time managing his emotional state as they do with actual administration.
* ByTheEyesOfTheBlind: His inability to use Anima means he's one of the few capable of seeing through the Red Scorpion assassins' stealth abilities.
* CursedWithAwesome: Gustave's inability to use Anima. [[BadassNormal It just encourages him to become the greatest fighter of his time]].
* DisabilitySuperpower: His inability to use Anima means he can freely use steel, which is otherwise seen as AwesomeButImpractical in universe as you can’t channel Anima through it.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler:Dies suddenly in a chapter where you have no control over him.]]
* EvilPowerVacuum: [[spoiler:While he isn't distinctively good or evil, Gustave's sudden death destabilizes the developed world and ignites a mad power grab by all the neighboring countries while Lord Kelvin is left to try and clean everything up.]]
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Starts with a few points in unarmed combat, ties with Tyler for highest growth in the game in Martial, and it's his second-highest weapon growth to boot.
* InfinityMinusOneSword: His sword, which upgrades from a rather common steel dagger to a {{BFS}} (at least to the game's standards), is one of the most powerful weapon of the game, with only the hidden Cinderforge Sword surpassing it.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: As checkered as his relationship with Philippe was, Gustave takes the loss of his brother and nephew very hard - as in, "gather an army and march in force to completely and indiscriminately eradicate the small cult he believes responsible" hard.
* LightningBruiser: He can't use any anima, but his very big sword is all he needs. Thanks to his very high Health, Life Points total and defense against all kinds of attacks, he doesn't have to worry much about the enemy actually hurting him. On top of that, Gustave joins with the Cannonball role (+20% Speed), meaning he will almost always act first in battle, and he laters learns the Commander role which boost everyone's Speed by 10%.
* MagicallyIneptFighter: He has no Anima power, but his ability with the sword is second to few.
* MasterSwordsman: Gustave's Sword growth is the highest in the game by a huge margin, to the point that he has the single highest weapon growth ''period''. This means he will make extremely good use of his steel sword.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: [[spoiler: It's implied, albeit somewhat clumsily, that the attack on the Southern Fort that took Gustave's life was influenced by something sinister.]]
* NeverFoundTheBody: [[spoiler:The only thing found of him (or at least shown) is his signature sword.]]
* ParentalAbandonment: His father ''kicks him out of the kingdom'' at age 7 for [[UnSorcerer not having anima]]. Then his mom dies before he hits age 20.
* RightfulKingReturns: His conquest of Finney is meant to be set up as this in-universe. Gustave [[SubvertedTrope subverts it]], though, by leaving Thermes to his brother, then taking off for another part of the continent and just [[StartMyOwn having his own city built]].
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: When a cult assassinates [[spoiler:his nephew and by proxy his brother]], Gustave sends soldiers into the Ruins of Hahn to exterminate them all. Kelvin tries to convince him out of it, to no avail.
* ShipTease: With [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Leslie.]] Although it's never explicitly said in the game itself, Leslie remains with Gustave into his adult years. Artwork like [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/romancingsaga/images/d/d5/SF2_Leslie_Gustave_Artwork.png/revision/latest?cb=20190113234340 this]] suggests something more than friendship, and some sources even suggest that [[spoiler: Leslie stayed mostly out of the public eye and had several children by Gustave - and that after his death, she moved herself and them back to Greugel to make sure they didn't get caught in the inevitable political firestorm.]]
* ThirteenIsUnlucky: It doesn't seem that Gustaves I-XII had any issues with the Firebrand ceremony. Gustave later turns this trope on his ear, making the '13' a very unlucky number for anybody facing him, his AntiMagic {{BFS}}, and his [[BadassArmy steel soldiers.]]
* UnSorcerer: One of the rare people in the world who can't use magic, in a world where even the rocks have magic. It's also implied that magic spells don't have much effect on him, either.
* WalkingSpoiler: Most of the conflict in the second generation is caused by [[spoiler:his death.]]

!!William "Wil" Knights
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/will_knights_2.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Tycoon Wil]]
An adventurer who was just out seeking his fortune, only to have his simple life turned upside down by sudden personal tragedy. Soon, he finds himself searching for the secrets of 'The Egg', a mysterious, soul-stealing entity. Wil's tale spans three generations of the Knights family line, as matters keep growing beyond the scope of anything they imagined...
----
* BadassFamily: Becomes the patriarch of one. One of the two plots of the game follows it through three generations.
* BlackMage: Wil's fighting abilities are lackluster at best, being only proefficient with staves, thus making him the perfect choice if you need a spellcaster. Notably, Wil is unique in that he is able to spark the most spells among every playable character, with his granddaughter Ginny coming close second. Among them are the very powerful [[DiskOneNuke Firestorm]], [[PlayingWithFire Incineration]] and [[ShockAndAwe Call Thunder]]. He also has rather high growth rates in all anima types except for Tone and Beast (and even then, his growths for those aren't that bad).
* CarryABigStick: His weapon of choice, cementing his status as a spellcaster. He is still able to become a very powerful fighter, as his Staff growth is the highest in the game, only rivaled by his granddaughter Ginny, though as he grows older he won't be able to keep up with younger characters who will outperform him with ease.
* CoolOldGuy: The only character to survive through 3 different generations of protagonists. Sure, once he reaches his eighties he suffers from a massive status loss in health points and weapons points, but he keeps everything else and remains a very decent fighter (even moreso if you built him as a mage). The old-age scenarios, in fact, play this trope straight as an arrow, as he's there to support his actual granddaughter Ginny.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: [[spoiler:Tragically with his son Richard.]]
* PlayingWithFire: Has an affinity with the element, and is able to spark quite a few fire spells, including some of the most powerful ones.
* RetiredBadass: Plays this trope as literally in the late-game scenarios, coming out of retirement in his ''eighties'' to assist his teenaged granddaughter.
* SpiderSense: Not only is he able to sense the presence of the Egg (like everyone from the Knights family), he is actually able to feel when something is going to go wrong, like when he worked at the mines and was able to predict a monster invasion and the mines' collapse.

[[folder:Party Members]]
!!Kelvin
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kelvin_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
A count of Jade, who first befriends Gustave XIII as a teenager following the latter's exile.
----
* BlackMage: While he is gifted with the Spear, Kelvin is not a great fighter due to his disastrous Health points. He makes up for it by being very good with spells. His Support role enhances his allies' Arts damages by 12%.
* BestFriendsInLaw: Eventually marries Gustave's younger sister Marie. This results in Kelvin and his descendants - for better or worse - becoming the heirs to Gustave's holdings after the latter's passing.
* NumberTwo: To Gustave as the latter builds his kingdom. It is he and his children [[spoiler: Who are also Gustave's (great)nephews through Marie]] that attempt to keep order in the realm after Gustave's sudden death.
* RedOniBlueOni: Serves as the politically savvy foil to Gustave's brute force and shock tactics.
* SketchySuccessor: Ultimately, he's not Gustave. He actually does pretty well under the circumstances, outlasting Cantal of Otto and reclaiming Hahn Nova, but he isn't even able to hold his alliance together until his death.
** Had his ''own'' in the form of eldest son Charles, who was roundly disliked to the point of nearly causing another civil war.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Gustave at first, seeing him as an annoying troublemaker. They eventually become friends for real.
* YouAreInCommandNow: As Gustave is dead without children or any clear heir, Kelvin takes command and tries to preserve Gustave's empire and Hahn Nova.

!!Johan
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/johan_sprite_saga_frontier_2.gif]]
A former member of the Red Scorpions assassin's group, pursued by former colleagues after he started questioning their motives. Saved from certain death by Gustave XIII, and attracted to his power, Johan decides to serve the prince.
----
* GlassCannon: Very powerful, yet very frail. He is unable to last long in a fight because of his rather low Health and, above all, disastrous Life points total which prevent him from regenerating his health often. On top of that, he comes equipped with the War God role, which enhances tremedously the damage he deals (+50%) at the cost of his Weapon and Spell points regeneration. He is, after all, an assassin: his goal is to take his target's life quickly, not engage in a grueling battle.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Johan has the highest starting Martial level in the game; being a former assassin, he was probably trained in unarmed combat for those times where he was assigned to kill someone but couldn't sneak a knife in with him.
* HeelFaceTurn: He decides to stop being an assassin, and ultimately becomes a follower of Gustave. However, his organization doesn't accept resignations.
* InvisibleToNormals: By this world's standards, at least; the Red Scorpion assassins are trained in an Anima technique that renders them undetectable to anyone with even a modicum of magical ability. Since [[EveryoneIsASuper this applies to 99% of the world's population]], there are very few who can see him when he doesn't want to be seen, despite openly murdering people on a crowded street.
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: If you didn't unlock the "Johan the Assassin" scenario before "The Southern Fort", Johan can come off like this [[spoiler: for Gustave's scenario]]
* MurderInc: Red Scorpion.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: Johan is slowly dying from a poison inflicted by his former fellow assassins.

!!Cordelia
* GlassCannon: Her HP growth is pretty bad for a front-liner, but she makes up for it by specializing in Spears, which are one of the hardest-hitting weapon types in the game.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: For Wil. Somewhat unfortunately, because of the way ''[=SaGa=]'' handles the romance your best hint at their feelings for each other probably comes if [[spoiler:Cordelia is killed in the "Infiltrate! Alexei Gang" scenario]]... which then fouls up the canon by requiring Labelle to sub in as Wil's SecondLove and Rich's mother.

!!Labelle

* SecondLove: For Wil if [[spoiler:Cordelia dies.]]

!!Nina
Wil's aunt.
----
* ActionMom: Not biologically, but she raised Wil, qualifying her for the Mom part, and she's a semi-retired adventurer who joins the team partly because she's been itching to get back in action.
* BlackMage: She rivals Narcisse when she joins, which is no small feat, although she focuses more on the Wood, Rock and Water animas, whereas Narcisse's forte is with Rock and Fire. However, her growths are even worse than his (presumably due to having been [[RetiredBadass previously retired]] and middle-aged when she joins your party.)
* CombatMedic: She joins with several offensive spells and the Life Water spell, which effect is amplified by her Recovery combat role.
* CrutchCharacter: She is only available for two scenarios, but she is a rather powerful addition to your party, with good anima masteries and very high Health.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: The unnamed spell she uses against Alexei's dragons allow her to singlehandedly destroy them, at the cost of her own life.
* HeroicSacrifice: She gives up her life to save her nephew from Alexei.
* MamaBear: When she hears that Wil is planning to ask Alexei about the Egg, she demands that he take her along so she can keep him safe.
* ParentalSubstitute: Wil's parents died while he was an infant, so she's been raising him instead.

!!Tyler

* GoodOldFisticuffs: He may start out completely untrained in fistfighting, but he ties for the fastest growth rate in the game.
* MightyGlacier: Not as strong as Narcisse, but, compared to the newcomers like Cordelia and Wil, Tyler is much more experienced and sturdy, thanks to his high Health. He is also one of the slowest character.
* FaceOfAThug: Tyler sports a kind of mohawk/punk hair, and doesn't look like your average adventurer. At first, Wil thought that he was a thief. In the end, Tyler is an incredibly nice fellow, who will become one of Wil's best friend, and a longtime companion in his adventures.

!!Patrick
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/patrick_sprite_saga_frontier_2.png]]
A man from Weissland, the land of mountains and snow, in search of a good adventure and a good plate of food. He joins Wil after meeting him at Laubholz pub. He later helps Eleanor in her segments of the story, and retires from fighting following Eleanor's last quest.
----
* CarryABigStick: One of the few characters who use staves more as bludgeoning tools rather than as spell catalysts. If you want a sturdy staff user for generation 1 and 2, look no further than Patrick.
* MightyGlacier: Stats-wise, there is no mistake he is one, as he joins with an impressive health points and weapon points pools, not to mention his preference for steel armor and his unique "Wall" battle role that significantly reduces the damage he takes. Coincidentally, he is not the greatest spell user.

!!Raymond
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raymond_sprite_saga_frontier_2.png]]
A friend of Tyler and Patrick, who is introduced to Wil by the former. He and Patrick continue to sell their services together long after Wil retires.
----

!!Narcisse

* BlackMage: Your *de facto* best spellcaster during all the first generation, with high anima mastery in offensive anima such as Stone and Flame, and who joins with the Heavy Spell role, enhancing even further the power of his spells. Wil will eventually catch up to him and become an even better mage if trained correctly.
* CrutchCharacter: Narcisse is an experimented adventurer, and by far the most powerful member of your party when he joins, joining with high stats and the very useful early game spell Bushfire. However, his growth rates are poor, and the newbies will outclass him eventually.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While he is an arrogant prick, he feels enough concern for Wil to accompany him partway on his last expedition. He remains a friend of the Knights afterwards, becoming a teaching figure for Rich.
* RetiredBadass: Is fifteen years Wil's senior, being 30 in Wil's first scenario while Wil himself is only 15. By the time Wil himself is in his late twenties, Narcisse is well into his forties and has aged out of the adventuring game, serving instead as an adviser to Wil and later a mentor to Wil's son Rich.

!!Eleanor
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eleanor_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
An expert in Flame Arts tasked with gathering tactical information for Kelvin.
----
* BlackMage: Among her party, she is the dedicated anima user, and her fire affinity makes her a force to be reckoned with.
* DecoyProtagonist: She appears as the leader of an expedition featuring an assuming young fighter named Rich... who is later revealed to be Rich ''Knights'', Wil's son.
* PlayingWithFire: Do not mess with Eleanor: she is more than able to burn you to a crisp. She starts with the highest Fire anima level among all characters (20) and has the highest Fire anima growth rate to boot. Not to mention she can spark nearly every Fire spells (sadly, she can't unlock Soul Hymn). She is what Narcisse was to the first generation, except better since she has decent growths compared to him.

!!Richard "Rich" Knights
[[quoteright:339:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/richard_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
The only son of "Tycoon Wil" Knights and his spouse. Not wanting to live in his father's shadow, Rich sets out to become a famous digger himself.
----
* TheCasanova: He is quite the flirty one, if Eleanor's reaction to seeing him with Julia is any indication.
* {{Hunk}}: He is very good looking, and he knows it.
* MagicKnight: Interestingly, fits the archetype quite well, as he is quite skilled with weapons and one of the few characters to have mastery in all spell types (despite his actually lackluster growth rates in them). Overall, Rich is a great fighter who is perfectly able to cast spells if he needs to.
* PlayingWithFire: If you didn't unlock it before, he joins with the very powerful Fire Storm spell.
* SpiderSense: He is able to sense the Egg's presence, like everyone in his family.

!!Diana

* MagikarpPower: Diana is by far the weakest character to join your party, as her starting affinities are almost non-existent, and she has pitiful stats all-around, which is rather normal as she is not an adventurer, nor a soldier, but a civilian. However, her Spear growth is actually quite good, and she has an unique advantage compared to other characters: the highest Weapon point regenaration of them all (5), meaning she can unleash expensive arts one after the other without getting tired (and her Weapon point growth is also off the charts). On paper, she can become one of the best steel fighter of the game. Sadly, she is only usable for one scenario.
* ProperLady: A fine lady who wears dresses and who knows how to curtsy (especially after defeating her enemies).

!!Virginia "Ginny" Knights
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ginny_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
Rich and Diana's daughter. Growing up never knowing her father, she wants to follow in the footsteps of her grandfather Wil.
----
* JackOfAllStats: Has very balanced growths all around, save for her Tone and Beast animas, which are subpar.
* LittleMissBadass: Starts adventuring at 14 and can more than hold her own. That said, starting at around 14 seems to be the norm in this setting, since that's the age that Kelvin, Cordelia, and her grandfather Wil start out at.
* MagicKnight: One of the most powerful ones in the game. Ginny has very good stats and growths, and can fulfill pretty much any role you want, be it a frontline fighter, a mage or even armored warrior.
* SpiderSense: Able to sense the Egg's presence, like her father and grandfather.

!!Gustaf
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gustaf_sprite_saga_frontier_2.gif]]
A taciturn fighter who joins Ginny's adventure. Despite being [[spoiler:the son of Philippe III and the designated heir to the Finney kingdom]], he prefers a life of adventure.
----
* AncestralWeapon: Has two.
* AnimeHair: That double-horned protrusion coming out of Gustaf's head isn't a hat, believe it or not.
* InterfaceSpoiler: Gustaf comes equipped with two unremovable swords with bland names. Since one of the two is more powerful than the other, most players won't try to use the weaker one in combat. However, if one does use it, more than a few players will do a double take when the fire dagger he uses has a skin identical to [[spoiler:Firebrand]]. This is the first clue to Gustaf's real identity.
* LightningBruiser: Gustaf has very good stats overall, and is one of the very few characters to have good affinity with all anima types (all of his growths are balanced on that regard). He is also very good with Spears... in theory that is, since you will never be able to equip him with one, which is a shame as his Spear growth is much better than his Sword growth. To compensate, he eventually gets one of the best swords of the game: [[spoiler:Gustave's Sword]].
* MagicKnight: He wields two swords. One is a steel blade, the other is a Flame Quell.
* MasterOfNone: Gustaf's growths are pretty terrible all around; his HP, WP, and SP are barely serviceable, his Anima growths are all outdone by at least one other member of the final party, and his Sword growth is inexcusably atrocious for a character who is incapable of using anything else. The only things he has going for him are his steel sword and the fact that some of his competition suffers from CripplingOverspecialization; beyond that, his primary use appears to be as a backup caster. To clarify, here is how he stacks up compared to the other endgame members' growths:
** Ginny outdoes him in nearly everything he can do while also having the advantage of being capable of actually using the weapon she has the best growth with.
** Primiera is a solid all-around physical fighter who, while specialized in axes, has a superior Sword growth rate while, again, having the freedom to choose a different weapon.
** Roberto may be atrocious physically, but he has good growths in nearly all types of magic, making him an excellent primary caster and your party's foremost Tone and Beast specialist (which are, coincidentally, the only skills Gustaf is better than Ginny at).
** Wil, while long past his prime, has had nearly half the game to gain power, and is, if properly trained, probably the strongest caster in the game, with even his weaknesses being only slightly inferior to Gustaf's growths.
** Meythia is probably the only one who cannot be unambiguously better without the player deliberately level-grinding her with Gustaf benched, due to her rock-bottom WP and SP growths preventing her from making use of any strong Arts. Even then, she isn't hindered by merely "okay" Anima growths combined with outright bad weapon growth (so long as you give her an axe).
* MyNaymeIs: Seems to spell his name with an 'f' at the end to avoid people confusing him with a Gustav(e) of the Finney royal family. [[spoiler: Turns out he ''is'' a member of said royal family traveling incognito and it's very likely his real name ''is'' Gustave (XV?)]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: [[spoiler:Follows Gustave's footsteps and actually kicks ass in battle.]]
* WarriorPrince: [[spoiler: Is a great-grandson of King Gustave XII and therefore a member of the Finney royal family]] and a badass warrior.

!!Roberto
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roberto_sprite_saga_frontier_2.gif]]
Gustaf's travelling companion.
----
* BlackMage: Aside from his disastrous Rock growth (which, to add insult to the injury, is at level 0 when he joins), he is able to use all anima types with ease, already has his Water, Fire and Tone animas decently leveled up, and thus can turn into one of your best spellcaster. That being said, he has some serious competition with Ginny, Gustaf and, if trained, [[spoiler:Wil Knights]]. Notably, he is the best Tone spellcaster of the game, making him a good pick if you want to use Hymnal, Call Thunder, Heavenly Thunder and Sonic Poison. He is also a very good Archer, and is by far your best pick if you want to use Bow Hybrid Arts. He also has a decent Staff growth, though way behind the Knights' family.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Is only 27 when introduced, despite having white hair and a wise mind.

!!Primiera

* MassiveNumberedSiblings: She's Cantal's youngest daughter. The story makes mention of ''at least'' 81 other siblings.
** MamasBabyPapasMaybe: ''Inverted.'' Cantal's been with so many women that it's not revealed in-story which one of them was Primiera's mother - particularly since she's raised by her [[PromotionToParent (step?)sister Nicholette]].
* MagicallyIneptFighter: She is very physically oriented, with a very high weapon points pool, steel equipment and great mastery of axes and spears. Her spell points growth is almost non-existent too, but this is not an issue as she is a powerhouse.

!!Meythia

* MasterApprenticeChain: She was a student of Ventarbre, who was in turn a student of Cielmer.
* MasterOfNone: She has rather low growth rates all around, except for health points and in Axe. Her rather low weapon point regeneration makes her pale in comparison to the other dedicated fighters of your party and her anima masteries aren't great except for support spells. You won't find many people picking her over the other members of your party for the final battle.

!!Cielmer
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cielmer_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
A magician that acted as a teacher to Gustave XIII when the prince was a child. After helping Gustave XIII and his mother Sophie escape Thermes, he took on Narcisse as a travelling companion, and befriends a young Nebelstern. He later took on Ventarbre as an apprentice.
----
* BlackMage: A master of the magical arts. Naturally, the few times you get to use him in battle, his anima growths far outstrip anything else.
* CoolTeacher: To Gustave, and later to Ventarbre.
* CourtMage: Seems to have been this to the kingdom of Finney, but quit when Gustave XIII and Sophie were exiled.
* ElementalPunch: Cielmer has some ability with unarmed combat (though it pales in comparison to his spells), and he is, notably, the only character in the game capable of imbuing his fists with Anima.

!!Fake Gustave (Unmarked Spoilers)
A Quell hunter who discovers the Egg while looting a battlefield. The Egg quickly warps his personality into a power hungry conqueror who becomes a major antagonist of both storylines.
----
* AchillesHeel: His army, consisting of steel soldiers and some magic support, is surprisingly weak to being flanked by ranged units. This is one of the ways you can manage a victory at South Moundtop.
* BigBad: His machinations lead to him becoming the main villain in the last act of Gustave's story. Arguably he's more of [[TheHeavy]] to the Knights story, as he's just the latest person to find the Egg.
* NeverFoundTheBody: He escapes from the aftermath of the Battle of South Moundtop with his generals, fleeing to the Last Megalith. Notably you never explicitly fight him (if you engage his unit at South Moundtop, you just fight 4 steel soldiers), nor is his body found in the aftermath of the final battle. Its implied, though never confirmed that the first stage of the battle with the Egg is his monster form, similar to his Edelritters.
* VillainShoes: You command him and his armies in the Battle of Hahn Nova, annihilating Charles and his forces.

!!Sargon
Initially a young adventurer that teams up with Rich Knights and Eleanor, he later crosses paths with Fake Gustave and becomes a dangerous foe.
----
* FaceHeelTurn: In the two scenarios that you can control him, he's portrayed as a good-hearted warrior. Then in the finale of his second scenario, his companions are turned into mindless slimes and he is corrupted into an Edelritter by Fake Gustave.
* {{Irony}}: Even though he eventually becomes the Fire Edelritter, in the stages you control him, he's actually more proficient with Stone magic.
[[/folder]]

!!Gustave XII
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gustave_xii_concept_saga_frontier_2.png]]
The King of the Finney kingdom. Husband of Sophie, and father of Gustave XIII, Phillip, and Marie.
----
* AbusiveParents: As if the case with his eldest son wasn't enough, it's implied he turned cold against Philippe and Marie as well after he remarried and had another child. Philippe seemed to have been disinherited in the line for the throne (despite his Anima being completely fine). Marie was shuttled off in a political marriage to a known womanizer, and was such a bad husband she ended up ''divorcing him'' about as soon as her father died.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: A whole lot of plot and bloodshed could have been avoided if Gustave XII's solution to his oldest son not having Anima hadn't been to banish both the kid ''and'' his mother as if they had committed some sort of high treason.

!!Sophie
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sophie_concept_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
The Queen of the Finney kingdom, banished when she attempts to defend her son Gustave XIII after he fails the Firebrand Ceremony.
----
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: ''Slaps'' a teenaged Gustave (but also gives him a heartwarming pep talk) when the latter mopes about being worthless because of his lack of Anima.
* MamaBear: Willing to give up her entire kingdom for her son.

!!Philippe
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/philippe_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
Gustave XIII's younger brother, who angrily blames him for tearing their family apart.
----
* BigDamnHeroes: Maybe. [[spoiler: The game heavily implies that the mysterious red dragon that destroys the monsters that had Philippe III surrounded in Hahn Nova was Philippe I.]]
* CainAndAbel: Initially, the Cain to Gustave's Abel, despite being younger.
* ForcedTransformation: With his anima being consumed by Firebrand, Philippe gets turned into a red dragon.
* ManOnFire: Fuelled by rage upon seeing [[spoiler:his son being killed before his very eyes]], Philippe grabs Firebrand to kill the assassin. However, Firebrand being a very powerful fire quell and Philippe himself being a powerful mage with loads of anima, he immediately combusts upon doing so, leading to the unexpected side effect of turning into a dragon.
* TheResenter: Next appears after he's been nursing a twenty-year grudge against his older brother for (in his estimation) starting the chain of events that tore his family apart. It takes an appearance from his mother's spirit to stop Philippe from trying to ''kill'' Gustave.
* SuperPowerMeltdown: [[spoiler:Takes hold of the Firebrand in a rage after his son is killed and cuts down the assassin. His anima is consumed, leading him to transform into a dragon.]]
* TheUnfavorite: Of his father - particularly after Gustave XIV was born. It's implied that he was disinherited by his father due to his connection and resemblance to Sophie, whom Gustave XII banished along with his eldest son after she defied him.

!!Cantal
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lord_cantal_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
The Marquis of Otto, and the first husband of Gustave's sister Marie. He is the father of both Primiera and Nicolette, as well as various other heirs that end up dividing his empire into a powerless territory.
----
* MassiveNumberedSiblings[=/=]ReallyGetsAround: Has 82 children by various wives and mistresses that we ''know about''. He divides his land between his eighty known sons, effectively turning quite a large empire into a political non-entity after his death.
* TheStarscream: Referred to as the "Mephistophelian Hero" for his political acumen. He is originally an enemy of Gustave XII, swears fealty to Gustave XIII after the latter takes Thermes, but turns against Kelvin after Gustave's death and unites the Merchmin Region under Otto.
* WorthyOpponent: To Gustave XII, and later to Kelvin.

!!Marie
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marie_saga_frontier_2.jpg]]
Gustave XIII's younger sister.
----
* ArrangedMarriage: To Cantal, presumably when both are still quite young teenagers (she is 18 and Cantal ''16'' when Gustave XII dies). Doesn't work out (the fact that Cantal is all but stated outright to have been a womanizer might have something to do with this), and [[AllThereInTheManual she divorces him after her father's death]].
* MissingMom: To Phillippe III, turns out. She is never named as such, but apparently she married ''Kelvin'' after the aforementioned divorce.
** Sophie was also this to her, as Marie was an infant of a few months when her mother and brother were banished from Finney.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Concept art sketches show that Marie is basically a dead ringer for how her mother Sophie looked as a young woman.

!!Philippe II
The son of Philippe. His assassination during the Firebrand Ceremony drives his father into a rage.
----
* AChildShallLeadThem: Becomes king at age 7. [[WiseBeyondTheirYears Even]] [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] the fact that he's too young to properly lead the kingdom. Of course, about ten seconds later...
* MissingMom: Interestingly enough - Philippe II had to have been birthed by ''someone'', presumably Philippe I's noblewoman wife to be a legitimate heir to the Finney throne. She is neither seen nor directly mentioned.

!!Charles
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prince_charles_sprite_saga_frontier_2.png]]
Kelvin's first son.
----
* BlackSheep: Most of his family on both sides seems to be, if not outright heroic, then at least as decent people as you'll typically find among nobles and royalty. Charles, not so much.
* {{Jerkass}}: He is unabashedly an haughty and despicable person with little care for others. It is a miracle that his own son, David, turned into a wise and kind ruler, as those two couldn't be more opposite.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: On both sides. His father, Kelvin, served loyally as Gustave XIII's best friend and NumberTwo for years, and the only time he ever seizes power, it's to ''maintain some semblance of stability'' after [[spoiler: Gustave dies suddenly.]] Charles' son, David, becomes the BigGood for the last chapter of the story and is implied to be the one who finally ushers in the age of peace. And then there's Charles himself, who's a {{Jerkass}} from the beginning and takes power only for himself.
* SiblingYinYang: With Philippe III, who is a brave and honorable warrior.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Being a jerk ended up causing his family ''massive'' headaches. His inability to help himself from being a dick to one of Cantal's daughters left her with a longstanding grudge that motivated her to play various rulers around Sandail with the intention of starting a ''war'' against Jade. Partly due to this war, the alliance Kelvin had built with the surrounding lords fractured again, leading to another period of bloodshed that wouldn't truly come to an end until Charles's own son was in power.

!!Philippe III
Kelvin's second son.
----
* DeadGuyJunior: Named, probably by his mother, [[AllThereInTheManual Marie]], after his tragically lost cousin and uncle.
* SiblingYinYang: His older brother Charles is, to put it bluntly, a prick. Phillipe on the other hand is brave, honorable, and apparently a badass fighter to boot.

!!David
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_david_sprite_saga_frontier_2.png]]
Charles's son, and Kelvin's grandson.
----
* BigGood: Leads the alliance in the final battle against the fake Gustave.
* TheWisePrince: Becomes known as Count David of Jade, the great peacemaker.
* SuperiorSuccessor: Whatever gifts of negotiation and smoothing over political differences David had didn't come from his old man, that's for sure.
* YouAreInCommandNow: His final speech implies Charles fell at the Battle of Hahn Nova shortly before the end of the game, placing David at the forefront of the peace talks even though he had inherited his new position months ago.
