Beerus is the [[DestroyerDeity God of Destruction]], who destroys planets [[BalanceBetweenGoodAndEvil to make room]] for new ones, and balances out the Gods of Creation, the Kais. He is one of the ''[[TheAce utmost]]'' powerful beings in the '''entirety''' of Universe 7, feared by even the Kais.

He served as the main antagonist of ''Anime/DragonBallZBattleOfGods.'' After receiving a vision of the so-called "Super Saiyan God" making a WorthyOpponent for him, he shows up on Earth. Despite his [[TheDreaded dreaded]] "profession", he's a surprising [[FriendlyEnemy exception]] to the commonly sadistic monster that a ''Dragon Ball Z'' villain usually is, which is good considering he's leagues and leagues stronger than all of them.

After this, he goes on to become a supporting character throughout ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'', quite often as an ally.

Aside from his appearances in the ''Battle of Gods'' and ''Resurrection ‘F’'' movies, and ''Super'', Beerus is also an available mentor in ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse'', and as mentioned before has a much-expanded role in ''Dragon Ball Super''. His portrayal in the latter has received some 'attention', however, as most of his Adorkable traits are downplayed to heighten his JerkassGods-level smugness. Later on, his personality grows more in line with the movies.

[[folder:A-C]]
* AboveGoodAndEvil: King Kai describes Beerus in these terms. When he tells Goku that Beerus tends to blow up a lot of planets, Goku immediately assumes that Beerus is a bad guy. King Kai responds that Goku's thinking about it the wrong way: Beerus's "job" and the whole reason for his existence is to destroy things, and his destruction of things is necessary for the upholding of cosmic balance across the universe. That said, Beerus's problem is the fact that [[BrilliantButLazy he spends most of the time he should be working sleeping]] and when he's awake his ''reasons'' for destroying planets are more often than not [[EvilIsPetty petty or spiteful]] (like because someone didn't give him good enough food).
* TheAce: If the fact that he's a [[PhysicalGod God of Destruction]] isn't convincing enough, then these examples should clear any doubt:
** For one, how about [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomping]] ''Super Saiyan 3 Goku'' with a [[FingerPokeOfDoom finger]]?
** Even more of this, when it reveals that he was using 70% against Super Saiyan God Goku; yes, Beerus is stronger than one of the strongest Super Saiyan forms in the series. Even in ''Dragon Ball Super'' when Goku pushes him to near full power, Beerus was still the victor and it turns out he ''lied about using full power''. Then when Goku used Kaio-ken x10 with Super Saiyan Blue, it's implied that Champa and Beerus are stronger than even that.
** He's so high above everyone else[[note]]except Whis and Zeno[[/note]] that when you beat him in ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse'' his most common loss quote is less that of someone who just got his ass kicked and more that of someone who just got a fun workout with an opponent that managed to impress him—as though this was his battle with Goku in the movie.
** [[spoiler: Also in ''VideoGame/DragonballXenoverse'', he's the only character that's so badass that BigBad Demigra's mind control simply fails to work on him. He's such an in-universe GameBreaker that he has to be convinced not to go and kill the main bad guy himself for the sake of avoiding excess destruction.]]
** Averted when it comes to doing his duty as a God of Destruction, though. While it is not known how his fighting abilities compare to the other Destroyers, his universe has the second-lowest mortal level of all 12 universes, suggesting that Beerus' godly guidance is less than satisfactory, which is reinforced when one remembers that he did nothing to stop Moro, Buu and Frieza from commiting genocide on a universal scale even when Buu was close to killing ''him'' as well. Even the ''Supreme Kai'', who by his admission is IncompletelyTrained and not that great at fulfilling his duties, calls Beerus out on being too lazy.
** In the manga, he [[spoiler: briefly takes on all the other Gods of Destruction ''at once'', and actually manages to take a few out. How Beerus ranks amongst the Gods of Destruction is ambiguous, but he's clearly not one of the weaker ones, and is implied to be among the top three-five strongest ones given his performance in said brawl.]]
* AchillesHeel: If you want to kill him, kill the Supreme Kai. Supreme Kai is the Kami to his Piccolo, in that Supreme Kai's a much weaker being who's life-linked to Beerus. In the ''Super'' manga, Dabra of all people kills Beerus without even realizing it in his battle with Trunks and the Supreme Kai, by killing the latter. This is the whole reason Present Zamasu migrated to that timeline. Also in the manga and implicitly in the anime, Zamasu ([[spoiler: both Future and Present, in the form of Black]]) planned to get rid of the main timeline's Beerus by killing the Supreme Kai, the same way he got rid of all the other Gods of Destruction. Retroactively, the Old Kai's statement to the Supreme Kai that Super Buu would come to the World of the Kais and kill them if Gohan and Goku couldn't stop him would suggest he also planned on exploiting this weakness, since he had the Grand Supreme Kai inside of him and likely knew about it.
* AdaptationalBadass: Beerus is hyped up to be much more powerful than Goku and Vegeta in ''Super'' compared to the movies. In the ''Battle of Gods'' movie, WordOfGod states Super Saiyan God Goku is a 6 to Beerus' 10, and by the time ''Resurrection of 'F''', Whis states that Goku and Vegeta could defeat Beerus in their Super Saiyan Blue forms if they work together. In ''Super'', Beerus (and Champa) are implied to be stronger than even Kaio-ken x10 Super Saiyan Blue Goku after his three years of training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Contrary, WordOfGod now states that he has no plans of them surpassing Beerus any time soon. This is especially true in the anime. While in the manga, Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta manages to land a punch on Beerus (before getting decked, but still) after finally figuring out how to maintain the form's full power, anime Beerus is so overwhelmingly above that level that Goku multiplies his Super Saiyan Blue power by ''twenty'' with the Kaio-Ken and still isn't considered anywhere near him.
* AdaptationalJerkass:
** In his debut in ''Battle of Gods'', Beerus was goofy and likable, though he did have moments of being a {{Jerkass God|s}}. In ''Super'', his more sympathetic qualities are toned down while his {{Jerkass God|s}} aspects are ramped up, doing such things as actively destroying planets after eating all their food, outright saying he never gets tired of watching planets explode after he blows them up, and going out of his way to be a dick to Vegeta and intimidate him after crashing Bulma's birthday party. Most notably, unlike in ''Battle of Gods'' where his slapping Bulma was more reflexive than anything, in ''Super'', after Bulma slaps him, he actually turns towards her and outright backhands her across the face, all with a SlasherSmile and a glint in his eye. After the ''Battle of Gods'' adaptation, Beerus is [[TookALevelInKindness made more in line with his film counterpart]].
** Beerus in the anime is a far bigger JerkAss than he is in the manga. For example, Anime Beerus literally blew up half a planet because the food wasn't to his taste. In the manga he did it because they tried to poison him, and also referred to the inhabitants as being evil, meaning he at least puts some thought into what he does rather than killing ''billions'' of people, regardless of how kind and cooperative they are, [[EvilIsPetty just because]]. In other scenes, there's something of an implication that Manga Beerus is giving those planets a chance to prove him wrong. Another notable example comes when Champa threatens to kill his team in the anime: when Goku objects, Beerus coldly mocks Goku and rubs in his weakness compared to the Gods of Destruction, mockingly inviting him to try to stop Champa if he can. This further portrays Beerus as cruel, sadistic, and [[FantasticRacism fantastically racist.]] In the manga, this whole scene never happens.
** On the other hand, he's much harsher towards Gowasu in the manga about choosing Zamasu as his successor than he is in the anime. In the anime, he simply tells Gowasu to chose his students more wisely after Gowasu apologizes for everything that has happened. In the manga, Beerus not only tells Gowasu to pick his students better but threatens to ''destroy'' him if this happens again or at the very least beat the crap out of him. Also, when he confronts Zamasu in the anime he refuses to act despite all the evidence and he needed more hard proof of wrongdoing since Zamasu is the successor of a Supreme Kai from another universe. To that end he lets [[spoiler: Zamasu kill Gowasu and has Whis rewind time]], giving Zamasu the benefit of the doubt. In the manga, once U7's Supreme Kai confirmed that he [[spoiler: messed up Future Trunks' world, he declares that he can destroy him]], while adding that he didn't really need a reason since he's a God of Destruction. He also doesn't bother to explain to Gowasu what's going on with Zamasu before [[spoiler: killing him]].
* AffablyEvil: Seems to be a mix of this and FauxAffablyEvil. On the one hand, he remorselessly destroys planets just for the slightest bit of annoyance, abuses both women and children in a sadistic manner, and basically plays with other people's lives. On the other, he's playful and goofy while in his own home, easily acclimates himself to the festivities of Bulma's party, and even politely apologizes for his rude behavior to the hostess.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: While vague in the anime, the manga makes it perfectly clear that he is outright hated by the Gods of Destruction of every other universe due to an incident in a Hide and Seek game where he falls asleep for 50 years during the game which caused it to be canceled, angering Zeno so much that it took extreme effort by 11 other universes to prevent him from destroying them all out of sheer anger. Rumsshi refuses to acknowledge Beerus's act in saving his life and in the Battle Royale between the God of Destructions, all the 11 other gods chose to gang up on him first.
* AllPowerfulBystander:
** In ''VideoGame/DragonballXenoverse'', after BigBad Demon God Demigra [[spoiler:[[EpicFail epically failed]] to mind-control Beerus]], he has to be begged to ''not'' quickly kill Demigra himself, in fear he'd be causing too much destruction in the process, and so after testing them in battle to see if they can do it, Beerus leaves it to the protagonists and takes a nap.
** He is also this in ''[[Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF Resurrection 'F']]'', where he states he's not going to take sides in the Goku/Freeza fight.
** Finally averts this during the Future Trunks arc, where he and Whis lend their aid, though the actual fighting of the antagonist is left to Goku and friends. [[spoiler:Until they have concrete evidence that present Zamasu has gone bad. Then Beerus comes in and personally destroys him.]]
** Averted again when Arale is on a rampage and Goku is unable to stop her. Beerus is the only one Bulma can think of who can put a stop to this and coaxes him over with the most delicious food in the universe. He easily bats Arale aside and was on the verge of disintegrating her, before his bowels force him to depart.
** This ''bites him in the ass '''hard''''' when the Universal Tournament arc comes out. Beerus may be powerful, but he is so bad (or rather lazy) at his job, that his universe has the ''second-worst mortal quality level'' out of the 12.
** In ''Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly'', when Bulma, Goku, and Vegeta are about to go track down the last Dragon Ball before [[spoiler:the Frieza Force]] can grab it, he refuses to go with them since he'd rather sleep. So they leave him to take care of Bulla. The ending even implies that he was fully aware of the fight against Broly and his increasingly devastating power, but chose not to intervene.
--->'''Beerus:''' HEY, [[ImADoctorNotAPlaceholder I'M A DESTROYER GOD, NOT A BABYSITTER!!!]]
* AloofAlly: Becomes this to the Z-Fighters post ''Battle of Gods''. While Beerus won't personally intervene in fights between mortals, he has occasionally helped out the Z-Fighters [[spoiler: such as allowing them to crowd around him and Whis so that they would survive the Earth blowing up after Freeza RageQuit or helping to investigate the connection between Zamasu and Black]]. Plus, if it's a godly matter, Beerus will step in [[spoiler:as shown when he vaporised Present Zamasu after witnessing him murdering Gowasu]].
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: [[spoiler:Besides Perfect Cell, he is the only one of Goku's opponents to qualify, and then, in a twist of twists, he reveals that this also applies to ''him'', and that Whis is even stronger yet. One could argue that the whole ''point'' of the movie ''Battle of Gods'' was this [[AnAesop aesop]].]]
* AmbiguouslyEvil: By the end of the film, it's not clear just how serious he was about destroying Earth. He could have done it without breaking a sweat at any point, but he kept "letting himself get distracted." In general, it seems that while he takes no pleasure in performing evil actions, he is very self-centered and doesn't consider other people's lives to be worth much. Given his job, this only makes sense. Before creation comes destruction, right?
* AnimalMotifs: Very feline-like (and according to WordOfGod, based on an old Cornish Rex cat Toriyama has) and wears pseudo-Egyptian clothing, appropriate as the Egyptians worshiped cats (though their cat-specific god was female). More importantly, he has the personality of a cat: petty, selfish, ruthlessly picky eater, and spends most of his time sleeping.
* AntiHero: Becomes this in ''Super'' after befriending Goku. He is still a {{Jerkass God|s}} but is now a more neutral character and more in line with his movie counterpart. Also, if it involves gods, he WILL take action, as [[spoiler:his erasure of Zamasu]] shows.
* AntiVillain: Destroying galaxies and planets is nothing personal. It's just his job.
* ApocalypseWow: Beerus says that no matter how many times he does it, he never gets tired of watching a planet he destroys explode. Though this sounds callous, destroying planets is literally his ''job.''
* AscendedExtra: He and Whis go from movie-only villains to plot-relevant reoccurring characters in ''Super''. They are the first movie debuting characters to do this.
* AsleepForDays: His naps tend to last for ''years''. In fact, in ''Battle of Gods'', he's first waking up from a ''39-year nap''.
* AssholeVictim: Future Beerus is this, by merely being [[TheGodsMustBeLazy asleep]] all the time. To wit: His laziness and continuous sleeping allowed the murderous future androids to live and kill many Earthlings for ''years'', if not decades. And besides the androids, there are also Future Babidi, Future Dabura, [[FromBadToWorse and]] Goku Black; the latter two ended up killing Future Shin in the manga or anime, respectively, and thus killing [[SlainInTheirSleep the still-sleeping]] Future Beerus indirectly.
* AxCrazy: Especially when he is in a bad mood in his DisproportionateRetribution moments. Adding to that, he has extremely sharp personality changes, he can vary from a calmed guy to incredibly crazy, irrational, and extremist if he gets angry. When Goku pushes him into an UnstoppableRage this gets cranked up. His facial features were contorted in animalistic fury, his attacks quickly began to start inflicting large scale destruction whereas before it was somewhat restrained and at times it seemed like he had trouble speaking outside of screaming and {{Angrish}}.
* BadassBoast:
-->''"Is there nobody on Earth more worthy to destroy...?"''
* BadassFingersnap: In Episode 68, he does this [[spoiler:and causes Present Bulma's new time machine to explode. From ''miles'' away. In a secret room.]]
* TheBadGuyWins: Downplayed. [[spoiler:He's the only movie character and villain at this point of the series to defeat Goku, and far surpass him, even with an additional power-up. Then again, the point wasn't really to beat Beerus, just give him a good fight, which Goku manages to accomplish.]]
* BalanceBetweenGoodAndEvil: Is supposed to maintain the balance in the universe by destroying planets so new ones can be created, although he had spent many years in slumber. The Kais are the gods of creation and such.
* BeenThereShapedHistory: A lot of incidents are connected to him, in remarkably petty ways:
** He is the reason King Kai's planet is so small. When he lost a ''video game'' against King Kai, he wrecked the planet. The little planet was a chunk that King Kai had rebuilt and restored to.
** He sealed Old Kai in the Z-sword after some sort of petty argument.
** He also killed off the dinosaurs (Though they are still alive thanks to Arale).
** The dub of ''Battle of Gods'', it's suggested that he may have told Frieza to exterminate the Saiyans, but this is much vaguer in the original Japanese. In either case, he approved of their destruction.
* BerserkButton: Do '''not''' deny him food; it '''will''' cost you your planet. Also, do not disrespect him, even initially, [[JerkassGods or he will return the favor to you]]. Another is not taking him seriously, either as the God of Destruction or as a person; King Vegeta sets this off by giving him the second-best pillow instead of the best, and Goku later sets this off by admitting he was holding back during their battle. And further later in their battle during Super, when a misunderstanding causes him to think Goku is taking him even lighter,[[note]] Beerus asked if Goku was taking him seriously yet. Goku responded, "You're about to find out." Then his god transformation faded, which Beerus didn't realize was unintentional.[[/note]] Beerus is reduced to screaming in rage. Also, if you do give him food, it had better be delicious and '''not''' something that could give Saiyan stomach cramps: this particular berserk button was discovered in ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse2'' when he sampled pudding prepared by Supreme Kai of Time Chronoa, who turns out to be a LethalChef.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Be careful around this friendly, polite, and fun-loving deity. Like all cats, Beerus has a mercurial temperament and is prone to violent mood-swings that can be set off by the most ''petty'' of reasons; do remember he is the same God who used King Vegeta's head as a footstool in front of his own son Prince Vegeta while making him treat him to an Eight-Course Banquet, and that was when he was in a ''good'' mood...
* BigBad: The main antagonist of ''Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods'' as well as its retelling in ''Super''. He is characterized as more vindictive in ''Super'' while still being sympathetic in both renditions.
* BigEater: His greatest joy in life is sampling new gourmet foods, and it is THIS sense of SkewedPriorities that almost gave Earth its (second) Apocalypse. Ironically enough, it also saved the Earth. While Goku being a WorthyOpponent is part of it, the main thing keeping him from destroying the Earth is that the food is just too good.
* BigGood: Ironically, Beerus and Whis take on this role after the Battle of Gods Saga in ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'' despite Beerus not actually being "good". Beerus indirectly trains Goku and Vegeta by claiming that Monaka is the strongest fighter in Universe 7 [[spoiler: when it was all a [[MotivationalLie lie to make Goku and Vegeta stronger]]]]. He also directly investigates Zamasu when he realizes that [[spoiler: Goku Black]] has a similar energy to him and [[spoiler: executes Zamasu when he's found guilty of murder, saving Gowasu's life]]. This action destroys the [[StableTimeLoop time loop]] that created [[spoiler: Goku Black]], assuring that Present Goku will never [[spoiler: get his body stolen by Zamasu]].
* BloodKnight: The plot is him basically trying to find the Super Saiyan God so he can fight him.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality:
** Somewhere in there, at least. He's the [[DestroyerDeity God of Destruction]], it's his ''job'' to destroy worlds so it makes sense he doesn't see anything morally wrong with his actions. It's actually established that old planets have to be destroyed so new planets can be born; the problem with Beerus is that he acts independently of the Supreme Kais (even worse now that there are only two of them left), chooses what planets he will destroy at his leisure, and he can and will destroy even important planets without a second thought if he's [[DisproportionateRetribution irritated enough]]. In ''Super'', Old Kai even says that the kind of destruction Beerus brings is pointless and petty. That said, his twin brother Champa (the God of Destruction of Universe 6) shares the same morality and it's implied these two are actually ''mellow'' as far as their kind go, implying this is indeed the case.
** In ''Super'' Chapter 69, he explains to Vegeta that he attained his great power because his mind is always on destruction and he has neither doubt or guilt over his actions or the actions of others; it is the literal philosophy of the Destruction God. He makes his point to teach Vegeta, who seeks to surpass Goku without Ultra Instinct but is still weighed down by his guilt over the Saiyans' history, to "destroy any stray thoughts and recreate himself from scratch."
* BreakingTheFourthWall: At the end of episode 118, after [[spoiler:[[TearJerker his brother Champa is erased along with the rest of Universe 6]]]], after taking a moment of silence, [[HeroicBSOD he quietly speaks to the narrator]], telling him to "say something", which prompts the narrator to begin the closing summary of the episode.
* BreakTheHaughty: In the anime, he's quite a JerkAss SmugSuper about how superior his power is to any mortal's, even scoffing at Goku and daring him to "try to take on a god" when the latter objects to Champa trying to murder his team. [[spoiler:Which is why he's so shocked when Jiren shows off a bit of his real strength at the Tournament of Power, showing that the rumor about a mortal who even the Gods couldn't even was ''true''. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uytU8OB75Ho He is suitably terrified]] and in total disbelief that any warrior could be this strong.]]
* BrilliantButLazy: Beerus comes across as this. He spends most of his time either eating or sleeping. Him being asleep for several decades is considered a light nap. But there is no doubting his power and the fact that he is very well-trained. This is {{deconstructed|Trope}} when it's pointed out that, unfortunately, this means that evil like Frieza and Majin Buu were able to run rampant and his universe has the second-worst mortality rate out of the twelve. Zeno is understandably not happy about this.
* TheBully: His treatment of King Vegeta can only be described as this. ''Super'' extends it to his son.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He is so immature he needs Whis as constant Butler/Nanny to remind him about waking up in the morning, good manners, and brushing his teeth before going to sleep. It's also {{Deconstructed}} and Beerus' faults are serious as well. Beerus' failure to have any kind of responsibility in his position is always shown in a very negative light and is largely responsible for the awful state Universe 7 is in, something his overseer Whis is completely aware of and subtlety tries to get him to stop. A lot of his growth as a person is Beerus learning to care more about more than fighting, sleeping, and food.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Destroying planets and exterminating their populations in the process is just everyday business for him. It cannot be overstated just how ''casually'' he treats destruction.
* ButtMonkey: He gets humiliated frequently as ''Super'' goes on, as few characters take him seriously in light of his quirky personality and growing fondness for Earth. His attendant Whis tends to mock and belittle him, and can always get away with it due to his strength surpassing Beerus's. This trend culminates in his most embarrassing punishment in the epilogue of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc: [[spoiler:Being forced to act as a "horsey" for Zeno, alongside Shin.]]
* CantLiveWithoutYou: Similar to Piccolo and Kami, Whis reveals in ''Super'' that if the Supreme Kai were to die, Beerus would die along with him. The reverse is probably also true, but then the odds of someone killing Beerus are pretty slim. At least he's lucky Old Kai and East Supreme Kai are still alive.
* CatFolk: He resembles a humanoid hairless cat, namely the Cornish Rex breed.
* CatsAreMean: He is cat-like in appearance, and it's his job to destroy planets. Though he actually averts this -- he's rather friendly when he's not angered or annoyed. Unfortunately, he gets angered and annoyed [[HairTriggerTemper easily]].
* ChallengeSeeker: In ''Super'', Goku theorized that the reason why Beerus wanted to fight a Super Saiyan God so much was that it has been a very long time since he had someone challenged him. While Beerus agrees with Goku's assessment, he makes it clear that Goku isn't that WorthyOpponent... until Goku pushes the limits of Super Saiyan God and earns Beerus' respect.
* CharacterDevelopment: At the start of ''Dragon Ball''[='s=] revival with ''Battle of Gods'', Beerus was a somewhat uncaring asshole who only destroyed for his own amusement. He didn't do a very good job at his position of destroyer and had no sense of responsibility. He had [[LackOfEmpathy a lack of empathy]] and no friends aside from Whis, who is somewhat forced into the position due to his job as an angel. While not entirely "evil", he wasn't a force for the universe's well-being to be sure. Throughout ''Super'', he slowly starts to take more responsibility in his job as the destroyer and becomes attached to the main cast to the point where he treats them with actual kindness and friendship. He's still quick to anger if they don't treat him with the requisite level of respect (or they don't adequately bribe him with food) and he constantly threatens to destroy Earth, but it's to the point that the Z-Fighters have more or less stopped taking him seriously. Whis notices it and tells him he is the one who changed, not Earth.
* ChokeHolds: His grab in Xenoverse.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: Beerus, amusingly enough, becomes this to Goku as they become more friendly. Whenever Goku is introduced to someone he really wants to fight, Beerus tries to keep him in line like trying to keep from sparring with Monaka and Zamasu. He also tries to discipline Goku about behaving himself in front of Zeno, only for his warnings to fall on deaf ears. He is also horrified when he hears that Goku [[spoiler: put a hit on himself to fight Hit at his best]] and gets on Whis for enabling Goku's behavior.
* CosmicChessGame: The events of [[spoiler:''[[Manga/DragonBallThatTimeIGotReincarnatedAsYamcha That Time I Got Reincarnated as Yamcha]]'']] are revealed to be a game between him and Champa using the characters as pawns.
* CosmicEntity: He is a [[DestroyerDeity God of Destruction]] capable of destroying the universe if he so desires and doesn't care too much about the lives of mortals, although he does respect them to various degrees.
* CranialEruption: After Goku tells him that he met Zeno, Beerus falls headfirst off the stump he was on, leading to this.
* CurbStompBattle: Him vs. anybody besides Super Saiyan God Goku. [[spoiler: Which itself, turns out to be a subverted trope; he's just as massively over SSG Goku as he was everyone else (at least in practical terms), with the only reason for that fight not being a curb-stomp being Beerus holding back a truly massive amount of power. He claims he only used 70%. Even in ''Super'' when he claimed that he was at 100% against Goku, ''it was a lie'', with so many later developments in the series before he felt any sort of threat from Goku's power that it would probably be fair to presume he used '''10% at best''' (despite his claim to have used that against a rage-empowered Vegeta). Then there's Vegeta vs. Beerus Round 2 in the manga: Vegeta having mastered SSB accidentally hits Beerus in the face with a strong punch. It does nothing, and next panel, Vegeta is shown face down in a crater.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:D-G]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Towards his [[SiblingRivalry twin brother]], Champa, who [[SnarkToSnarkCombat often responds in kind]].
-->''[After finding Champa and his attendant, Vados in the 7th universe, despite not having any business there]''
-->'''Beerus:''' I've heard of people getting lost but you are taking it to new heights.\
'''Champa:''' Hah, [[HeavySleeper snoozy Beerus]] is awake for once! Guess there is such a thing as miracles.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Inverted. [[spoiler:''Goku'' is defeated, and Beerus befriends him.]]
* DemotedToExtra: His two movie appearances after his debut. Ironically his role is reduced to "[[SatelliteCharacter guy who Whis serves]]."
* DeityOfHumanOrigin: Two of the Pride Troopers, in an indirect way, suggest he was once mortal. Namely, the fact that Toppo was outright suggested to be a potential God of Destruction because of how powerful he was ([[spoiler:and outright became one during the tournament]]), and Dyspo's resemblance to him and Champa made other characters wonder whether he is the same species as them. Whis, apparently, constantly searching for a proper successor further suggests this.
* DestroyerDeity: Is his title: God of Destruction. It's his job to destroy worlds so it makes sense he doesn't see anything morally wrong with his actions. It's actually established that old planets have to be destroyed so new planets can be born; the problem with Beerus is that he acts independently of the Supreme Kais (even worse now that there's only two of them left, and he is more powerful than any/all of them combined, so they can't really try to stop him), chooses what planets he will destroy at his leisure, [[DisproportionateRetribution and he can/has/will destroy important planets without a second thought if he's irritated enough, and he's rather temperamental.]] This comes to bite him in the ass when it turns out that Universe 7 is the second worst of all the 12 universes.
* DiabolusExMachina: Beerus volunteers to intervene and finish Moro quickly [[spoiler:once he merges himself with the Earth]], but right at that moment, the Grand Minister summons him and Whis, forcing Goku and everyone else to finish things off the normal way.
* DidntSeeThatComing:
** Beerus ''and'' Whis are surprised that Champa manages to get a TimeMaster like [[spoiler:Hit]] on their team. Beerus was so panicked that he begged Whis to tell Goku how to counter it.
** Goku [[spoiler:throwing his fight against Hit catches everyone by surprise. Beerus gets another shock when Monaka actually wins against Hit (because Hit also throws his match)]].
** Beerus thought that the future was changed after he killed [[spoiler:Zamasu]] because a god killing another god alters the time stream. This is despite Future Trunks and the others pointing out that Trunks' timeline is different from the present timeline. [[spoiler:Turns out, Trunks was right, but not for the reasons he thought. Beerus got it wrong because he and the others thought Future Zamasu was Present Zamasu and that Goku Black was merely a creation of the Super Dragon Balls when in truth, Goku Black ''is'' Present Zamasu and he's protected by any changes in time thanks to the Time Ring. Neither Beerus nor Whis could have known that Zamasu would become so obsessed with Goku that he would actually abandon his godly form and take Goku's body, and team up with his future counterpart.]]
** Beerus learning that he will also be killed along with Universe 7 if they lose the Tournament of Power. His surprise becomes bigger when he learns that Universe 7 was destined to be wiped out ''anyway'' by Zeno [[note]]The Tournament now gives them a chance to survive[[/note]] and only Whis was allowed to survive. Whis' callous and nonchalant laughter only adds salt to the wound.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Beerus brought Monaka because he claims that he is the best fighter he had ever met outside of Whis and he gave him a much better fight than Super Saiyan God Goku. [[spoiler:When in truth, Monaka is weak, at least compared to Goku and Vegeta, and Beerus only said those things to motivate Goku and Vegeta. He has no intention of letting Monaka fight at the tournament, which is why he makes Monaka go last no matter what. This comes back to bite him in the butt since he underestimates Champa's team, specifically Hit, and Goku is the last real fighter after Vegeta goes down. He was also handicapped early by [[TheLoad Buu]] failing his exam, so he only had three able fighters from the start. Even more, he makes Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo decide the order in which they fight by doing rock-paper-scissor instead of ordering weakest to strongest. This is why ''Goku'' is the first to fight in the tournament, Piccolo, the weakest on the team, is in the middle, with Vegeta being last. [[CurbStompBattle Given what happened when Vegeta fought Hit]], Beerus would have been completely screwed if Goku wasn't allowed back into the tournament since Frost cheated. Or, Goku could have been knocked out fairly by one of the other fighters and even if he did make it to Hit, he would have been weaker since he had to fight through the entire Universe 6's team. Whis mercilessly lampshades this.]]
* DisproportionateRetribution: Beerus ''owns'' this trope since he has several {{Berserk Button}}s and the power to destroy a solar system instantly. Him growing out of this is the most important piece of his CharacterDevelopment throughout ''Super'':
** He decides that he wants to destroy the Earth because Majin Buu ate all of the custard puddings at Bulma's birthday after Beerus asked him if he could have one or two of them.
** When Beerus shows up at King Kai's place, he remarks that he remembered it being larger. Whis has to remind him that it ''was'' larger, but after King Kai beat Beerus at a game of Hide-and-Seek, the God of Destruction threw a temper tantrum and blasted the bejeezus out of the planet, reducing it to its current size.
** Word of God reveals that he [[spoiler:was the one who sealed Old Kai into the Z Sword "over some trifling thing"]].
** In ''Dragon Ball Super'', which [[AdaptationalJerkass increased]] his {{Jerkass God|s}} tendencies, he destroys half a planet because the food was a bit too greasy for his liking. He destroys the whole planet in the manga, but it's more justified there as they were trying poison him. He also destroyed a planet because he didn't like the food there, although that didn't stop him from wolfing down the lunch made from said planet. On top of all that, he beats up King Vegeta and almost crushes his skull because he gives him only the second most comfortable pillow.
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: He might be a rather nice guy, but do ''not'' tick him off.
* DontFearTheReaper: In a roundabout way, but Beerus ''is'' the God of Destruction in the ''Dragon Ball Z'' Universe, albeit a ''goofy and likable'' God of Destruction.
* DontMakeMeTakeMyBeltOff: Hilariously ''spanks'' the Super Saiyan out of Gotenks.
* TheDreaded:
** Pretty much ''everyone'' in the ''Dragon Ball'' universe familiar with him fears him, including all Kais, Frieza, ''Shenron'' and arrogant Saiyans. While Vegeta being scared shitless is usually a good indication that someone is to be taken seriously, in Beerus' case it doesn't stop there. Even ''Goku'' who has no sense of authority respectfully addresses him with ''-sama'' at King Kai's request. In the case of Beerus' reputation, OOCIsSeriousBusiness applies to ''everyone''.
** In ''Resurrection 'F''' Frieza reveals that there were two beings that he was supposed to never mess with: Majin Buu and Beerus. [[spoiler: When Frieza sees Beerus during his fight with Goku, ''Frieza'' acts completely humble and is scared witless. Even an arrogant SOB like Frieza knows not to screw with him]].
* DreamingOfThingsToCome: He has a dream where he fights Super Saiyan God Goku, and this is what kicks off the plot. He implies that he has prophetic dreams often, but Whis has to remind him that they don't always pan out.
* DubNameChange: His name is tweaked into "Bills" in the Latin American Spanish dub.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: {{Subverted|Trope}}. Beerus doesn't tolerate anyone disrespecting him, something King Vegeta and Buu learn the hard way.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: In ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse2'', he actually threatened Old Kai's life only to stop because the Supreme Kai of Time offers everyone a banquet. ''Anime/DragonBallSuper '' establishes that Supreme Kais and Gods of Destruction are connected and [[CantLiveWithoutYou if one dies, the other dies with them]]. So in hindsight, Beerus nearly endangered his own existence.
* EnragedByIdiocy: In Super, once they actually start hanging around the Z-Fighters, Goku's reckless personality and lack of decorum with just about every God or Kai infuriate him.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment:
** In ''Battle of Gods'', we are introduced to Beerus when he's sleeping and bombs go off as his alarm clock. When that fails to wake him, Whis threatens to sing, which makes Beerus crawl himself out of bed in the laziest way possible.
** In ''Super'', Beerus’ first appearance has him eating a huge meal on an alien planet where the inhabitants are scared crapless of him. Although Beerus approves of the food overall, he says it's a bit on the greasy side and [[JerkassGods decides]] to destroy [[DisproportionateRetribution just]] half of the planet. Which he does by tapping his finger on the table.
** In both instances, he demonstrates his power by defeating ''Super Saiyan 3'' Goku at King Kai's planet with just '''two hits''', the first of which being a ''[[FingerPokeOfDoom finger flick to the head]]''.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** Even he can't stand Frieza; in fact, when he first wakes up from his long sleep in ''Battle of Gods'', he was contemplating going after him and killing him before finding out that Frieza was long dead.
** The reason he [[spoiler: imprisoned the Old Kai in the Z-Sword over a petty argument was because it would be improper of him to destroy the Supreme Kais' World. Also, since the Kais' lives are linked to his, killing one Supreme Kai increased the chances of him dying]].
** He is just as disgusted by [[spoiler: Frost as everyone else after learning he was EvilAllAlong]]. When he hears that [[spoiler: Frost is a planet broker who buys planets he ruins cheaply and then sells them for a high price after he fixes them, he sneers that's exactly what Frieza used to do]].
** In the ''Super'' manga, he doesn't like Whis comparing his job to Goku Black attempting human genocide in Future Trunks' time. Beerus destroys planets for the sake of universal balance, while he considers Goku Black little more than a lunatic who kills according to his own whims. In the anime, while Beerus never calls Goku Black a lunatic, he calls him an evil person and considers killing Zamasu on the spot just in case he turns into Black. [[spoiler: And did so with Present Zamasu, when the latter was going to kill Gowasu.]]
** He's just as shocked as anyone when he learns that the losers of the upcoming multiverse Tournament of Power will be destroyed with their entire universes, even calling out Goku for the mess he's started. Although, he is more in fear for his own universe and life, not so much the multiverse, and Goku points out how Beerus is a {{Hypocrite}} since he has destroyed planets for random reasons. That being said, he's very much unnerved when Universe 9 is the first universe erased, horrified that the two Zenos wiped out an entire universe almost instantly.
--> '''Beerus:''' They did it, they really wiped out an entire universe.
* EvilAllAlong: In ''Battle of Gods'', Beerus seemed to be subject to BlueAndOrangeMorality due to his duties as [[DestroyerDeity God of Destruction]] being necessary, while in the anime, the Elder Kai outright states that Beerus' acts of destruction have no real purpose. This is taken farther when the anime adds several scenes of him wiping out entire races just for being unable to fulfill his appetite. While initially that could be dismissed as him needing to destroy ''something'', the Universe Survival arc reveals that the Gods of Destruction ''aren't'' just supposed to destroy planets randomly; they're supposed to destroy ''evil'' people. All along, Beerus has been abusing his power by choosing to destroy good or neutral people [[ForTheEvulz for]] [[EvilIsPetty kicks]], while letting evil people like Frieza's family run rampant through the cosmos and do as they please. This is rubbed in further when the Grand Minister notes that Universe 7's mortal rating is the second-lowest, meaning Beerus is quite possibly the worst of the Gods of Destruction.
* EvilIsPetty:
** Though more AmbiguouslyEvil, he has a history of destroying planets for pretty petty reasons, such as losing at video games or being denied food. It's lampshaded when he is about to go to Earth from King Kai's planet; he outright tells King Kai that he has no intention of destroying the Earth "as long as nothing that happens there annoys [him]."
** It's been confirmed by Word of God that [[spoiler: Beerus imprisoned the Old Kai in the Z-Sword over [[NoodleIncident some petty argument]]]]. In ''Super'', the Old Kai even outright describes Beerus’ acts of destruction as pointless and petty.
* ExactWords:
** Threatens to destroy Earth if Goku loses to him. [[spoiler:And he did; albeit a tiny piece of it (specifically a single rock). Tired from and satisfied by his fight with Goku, he left the Earth in a state in which it'll recover.]]
** When he says he's gonna kill Zamasu on the spot, he wasn't kidding ''at all''. [[spoiler: He literally atomizes him where he stands after being found guilty for attempted murder]].
** When Goku accuses Beerus of destroying planets randomly, Beerus shoots back that none of his destruction is random. Which is true, however, he destroys for [[DisproportionateRetribution extremely petty reasons]] that might as well be random to any normal person. This comes back to bite him hard when it's revealed that his petty behavior has left his universe as the second-worst handled one overall.
** In VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse Beerus states he plans on finding and destroying Demigra after he tries and fails to mind control the God of Destruction. The heroes try to get him to let them try first, but he states he still plans on doing it himself... After taking a nap. And as Whis mentions, his naps tend to last decades.
* FatalFlaw: His laziness, he can't for the life of himself actually do his job properly and after barely putting in effort whenever he wakes up to destroy planets that don't sate his personal necessities he goes back to sleep and lets the universe go on as it can. This has led to his universe being the second-worst one overall in terms of Mortal level as he happily let the likes of Moro, Majin Buu and Frieza destroy planets nily willy and he himself can't seem to destroy things on a basis of anything but his own hedonistic whims. To hammer the point in, Buu almost succeeded at killing Beerus as he took out all but one of the Supreme Kais, and had he not chosen to absorb the Sacred Kai whose energy and good heart purified him into a more benevolent form, he would have succeeded and taken out Beerus without the latter being able to stop him.
* FatAndSkinny: He's the skinny to Champa's fat.
* FingerPokeOfDoom:
** In ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'', he destroys ''half a planet'' tapping his finger on a table.
** Defeated [=SS3=] Goku with a finger flick and a light karate chop, Piccolo with PressurePoint attacks while wielding [[MundaneMadeAwesome CHOPSTICKS]], and Vegeta with a light tap to the forehead.
** He also has an amplified version of Frieza's Death Beam.
* FreakOut: Any time Zeno's name is mentioned or he's in the presence of the King of All.
* FriendlyEnemy: Despite being a SmugSuper {{Jerkass God|s}} who deals out {{Disproportionate Retribution}}s like candy, he is actually quite friendly once you get to know him. [[spoiler: When Goku successfully becomes a Super Saiyan God, he spends more time giving Goku life advice than fighting him. He also regrets saying he will destroy the Earth since he came to like the people there and saves Bulma and all those around her when Frieza destroys Earth because she kept feeding him.]]
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Chapter twenty-eight of the ''Dragon Ball Super'' manga reveals that Beerus isn't very popular with the other Gods of Destruction, as in the last tournament - which was a hide-and-seek tournament, he hides and then fell asleep for fifty years, which caused the tournament to be canceled and enraged Zeno to the point in which he ''almost'' destroyed them all. None of the Gods ever forgave Beerus for this, and this could also explain why they're quick to blame his universe for anything that befalls the others. He starts this way with the main characters (who fear him and only tolerate his existence because he's too powerful to stop) but over time he becomes friends for real with them.
* FirstNameBasis: Beerus will usually avoid using the actual name of any mortal that he does either not respect nor outright hate. Goku and Vegeta quickly gain this honor, but for most of ''Super'', he refers to people by what they are, like calling Gohan "Goku's kid", Tien "baldy" or Master Roshi "old guy". [[spoiler: [[TookALevelInKindness As the Tournament of Power goes on, he starts using the names of the rest of the Z Fighters one by one]]. [[ButtMonkey Except Krillin]].]]
* {{Foil}}: To Goku. They're both rather lazy outside of the prospect of fighting things, [[ChallengeSeeker love a good challenge]], [[BigEater obsessed with food]], kind and respectful [[NoSocialSkills but with no sense of being rude]], outright [[TheDreaded terrifying to enemies]] when [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass angry]], and generally the most dangerous things in the universe. The only difference is that Beerus had nobody giving him a moral compass. In ''Super'', Beerus and even Whis notes how similar they are. After Goku and Beerus become friends, their relationship evolves, much like Vegeta.
* FunPersonified: Quite a friendly, gregarious, and likable fella actually; he readily joins in the food, song, laughter, and ''dance'' (yes, he lets loose some truly ''funky'' breakdance moves) in the festivities of Bulma's Birthday Party. Just like Goku, he enjoys making dear friends and spending quality time with them as much as he likes to battle.
* GagPenis: Implied with Whis' reaction to accidentally being flashed in ''Super'' is any indication.
* GenreBlindness: During the Future Trunks Saga. After [[spoiler: killing Zamasu, he believes that this means that Goku Black will be RetGone. However, as shown during the Cell Saga, the destruction of the Androids and Cell in the past did nothing to their BadFuture counterparts, and Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks are all savvy enough to expect the same and go to the future to be certain; indeed, Beerus is proven wrong, as Goku Black's possession of a Time Ring protected him]]. So, it's a case of RightForTheWrongReasons with Future Trunks. [[spoiler: Beerus' intervention would have killed Black if Black didn't have the Time Ring protecting his existence]].
* GracefulLoser: If the [[VideoGame/DragonballXenoverse Xenoverse]] [[VideoGame/DragonballXenoverse2 Games]] and [[Videogame/DragonballFighterZ FighterZ]] are anything to go by, Beerus can actually be a very good sport if his opponent actually ''does'' prove strong enough to defeat him.
* GodOfEvil: The God of Destruction. Though [[BlueAndOrangeMorality "evil" may be too strong of a word]], considering he's just doing his job.
** Alternatively, while he might correctly be considered a God ''of'' Evil, it would be unfair to say that makes him an ''Evil'' God.
* GodsHandsAreTied: In the Future Trunks Saga of ''Super'', he goes to some lengths to stretch the rules when Goku Black shows up from the future, but states he can't outright solve the problem for the Z-Fighters since a God of Destruction isn't allowed to time travel; he goes so far as to criticize Goku for relying on the gods, which is [[{{Hypocrite}} hypocritical]] for several reasons.
* TheGodsMustBeLazy: Part of his duty as a God of Destruction is to [[PayEvilUntoEvil to wipe out evil mortals who misuse the knowledge of the gods]], but he spends most of his time eating and sleeping; in fact, it's revealed in the Universe Survival Saga that part of the reason for Universe 7's low mortal rating is because Beerus is too lazy to actually do his job. He should have killed Majin Buu before he wiped out most of the Supreme Kais and left his universe with only the IncompletelyTrained Shin, but he slept through the whole thing, and not only did he let Frieza run rampant throughout the cosmos, he actually ''encouraged'' Frieza's actions by approving of his genocide of the Saiyans. When Gods of Destruction from other universes are introduced, it's revealed that several of them are far more efficient than he.
* GoodIsNotNice: Beerus eventually falls into this as he becomes friends with Goku and the others. He is still petty, selfish, short-tempered, and will threaten death and bodily harm to those who annoy him; but he's overall a decent person who shows [[EveryoneHasStandards contempt]] for [[spoiler: Frost when he learned that he is just another version of Frieza, and Zamasu when he tried to kill his own master and attack Goku]]. He also shows anger about not being able to do more to help Future Trunks, [[HiddenHeartOfGold although he tries to hide it]], and he [[spoiler: wished back Universe 6's Earth so Champa could enjoy the same food as him]].
* GreaterScopeVillain: Beerus has exerted a huge influence over the series behind-the-scenes, long before his first appearance:
** Beerus was the reason why King Kai's planet is so small, as he had destroyed the vast portion of it after [[DisproportionateRetribution a fit of childish rage]].
** [[http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/saikyo-jump-june-2014-issue-twel-buu-mysteries/ It's been revealed]] [[spoiler:he was the one who sealed Old Kai in the Z Sword]]. Old Kai confirms this in ''Dragon Ball Super''.
** While left vague in the original Japanese, in the dub of ''Battle of Gods'', it's suggested that he may have told Frieza to exterminate the Saiyans. In either case, he approved of Frieza doing so, and dialog about his job suggests it was his ''job'' to do so.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:H-O]]
* HairTriggerTemper: His first response to even the mildest annoyance is to threaten to blow up the planet. It's ''not'' an idle threat. Although as his CharacterDevelopment goes, he's evidently learning to rein in its severity.
* HasAType: In ''Anime/DragonBallSuperSuperHero'', he [[spoiler: develops a crush on Cheelai as soon as he lays eyes on her]] and Whis even says word for word that he 'has a type'.
* HeavySleeper:
** Not only does he need BOMBS to wake up, but he also requires the menace of Whis singing.
** In ''Super'', where he's much more of a jerkass, this is how the Earth is spared -- he ends up falling asleep right before he destroys it. [[spoiler: Actually, he faked it to get out of his promise to destroy Earth.]]
** Is used in ''Dragon Ball Xenoverse'' so he [[spoiler:can give Time Patroller Trunks and the Future Warrior time to defeat Demigra themselves without breaking his promise to do so himself]] by claiming a desire to take a nap first. Whis mentions he tends to take naps that last years, so the heroes can't expect more help from them.
* HeelFaceTurn: Applies more to ''Super'' than ''Battle of Gods'' since he acts a lot eviler there, but he still ends up being impressed enough with Goku that he finds a way out of his promise to destroy Earth and becomes friends with him.
* HiddenHeartOfGold:
** [[spoiler: Despite his intense rivalry with his brother, Beerus wishes for U6's Earth to be restored and advance so it's up to par with U7's Earth so Champa can eat the food there. Although Champa is touched by the gesture, he's still somewhat annoyed that Beerus did something for him]].
** [[spoiler: After he learns that BadFuture is still in effect, he pretends not to be concerned with that, but he starts to find ways to correct this. Whis mentions to Gowasu that Beerus is feeling an uncharacteristic degree of guilt over these events, though Beerus tries to deny it.]]
* HorrifyingTheHorror: On both ends of this. He is the ''only'' being that Frieza is openly and shamelessly afraid of, to the point his arrival causes Frieza to actually ''grovel'' before him. On the other hand, Zeno makes ''him'' openly shit his pants. [[spoiler: Also when Goku turns Ultra Instinct, a move that not even he or the other Gods Of Destruction can pull off, for the first time, he’s unnerved how a mortal of all things can access such power.]]
* HotBlooded: He has a fierce temper and lets his anger get the best of him. Though a [[BloodKnight good fight]] will calm him down.
* HumanityIsInfectious:
** Old Kai theorizes this is one of the reasons why Beerus spared Earth. In ''Resurrection ‘F’'', Beerus freely admits that he wants to destroy Earth, but wants to eat more of its food. He even promises to keep Bulma safe (as long as she keeps up with the delicious foods).
** In ''Super'', he comments that Earth is an interesting planet to have changed a Saiyan so much. Whis comments that Beerus seems to have changed a bit, too. [[spoiler: By the end of ''Super'' he shows all the signs that he has grown to legitimately care for the main cast.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** He accuses Goku and the others of relying on the gods too much after [[spoiler: Whis offers to make a new timeline for Future Trunks and Mai after their world got destroyed by Future Zeno]]. The problem is, the entire situation was the gods' fault. Gowasu was the one who chose a [[TheSociopath sociopath]] like Zamasu as his successor and was blind to his growing darkness, something that Beerus lampshades. Gowasu was also the one who gave Zamasu information about the Super Dragon Balls (which are the gods' Dragon Balls), that allowed him to steal Goku's body to become Goku Black and give Future Zamasu immortality. The future gods were also caught flatfooted as Goku Black murdered all the Supreme Kais with little to no resistance, leaving Future Zamasu and him alone as the supreme gods. Finally, it was Future Zeno who nuked the entire timeline after Goku and the others crossed every available GodzillaThreshold, and if Future Zeno actually oversaw the multiverse like he's supposed to, he could have killed both Goku Black and Future Zamasu before it reached that point. Beerus' statement is extremely close to victim-blaming.
** He reads Goku the rights about how dangerous Zeno is despite his kind nature since he is unpredictable and [[PureIsNotGood too innocent to value life]]. [[HypocriteHasAPoint While good advice and he has a point]], the problem is that Beerus isn't much better than Zeno outside of the scope of their destruction. Beerus is extremely unpredictable and temperamental to the point that he will destroy entire planets for [[DisproportionateRetribution petty reasons]] (including a Kai's world) and even trapped his fellow god in a sword for millions of years over a disagreement. There is also the fact that Zeno treats Goku better than Beerus who often pulls KickTheDog moments on Goku like mocking him for his inability to save the U6 team from Champa, constantly rubbing in Goku's face that he's still inferior to the gods, and threatening to kill Goku to impose his will upon him, something that Zeno has never done to him. Goku even calls him out of this, saying that he's just as guilty of destroying planets randomly, which pisses Beerus off. It's little wonder Goku doesn't really listen to him since Zeno treats Goku as a friend, while Beerus tends to treat Goku like his favorite pet or toy.
** After learning that Universe 7 has the second-lowest "mortal level", Beerus immediately blames Goku for this. Of course, as a god, improving the state of mortals is his personal responsibility. Moreover, as he's destroyed at least eight planets since his introduction to the series, and there are said to be only 28 inhabited planets with intelligent life left in the universe, he's directly done more to reduce the mortal level of his domain than any other main character, with the possible exception of mass destroyers like Frieza and Majin Buu. Before then, he blamed U7's Supreme Kai for the low rating since he takes a hands-off approach and lets mortals develop on their own instead of directly guiding them. Although the Supreme Kai is lackluster at his job, mostly because he was a junior when he became the TopGod, the Supreme Kais are ''supposed'' to be hands-off, which is an issue Zamasu had with the system. Plus, Beerus makes the Supreme Kai's job harder by destroying planets over bad food and even trapping Old Kai in a sword for millions of years.
** He calls Goku out for starting the Tournament of Power and orders him to "take responsibility" for what he has done. Then when he learns that his universe has the second-worst mortal ranking, [[NeverMyFault he blames everyone else for it]], refusing to take "responsibility" for the low ranking.
** When he learns that [[spoiler: Buu fell asleep three hours before the Tournament of Power is scheduled to begin and won't wake up for two months]], he launches into an angry tirade about beating Buu awake. Whis reminds him of ''his'' sleeping habits and how he has no room to talk. This statement leaves Beerus' speechless for a moment before he angrily tears into the piece of meat he was eating beforehand and changes the subject.
* HypocriteHasAPoint: While Beerus doesn't really have the right to blame Shin for their low mortal level given that he didn't do his job either, even making the Supreme Kai's life harder by destroying planets for petty reasons, he is somewhat correct that Shin should really be more pro-active in the development of mortal life, such as either stopping any threats to the development of his universe himself or train the Z Fighters to have them prepare for beings such as Frieza or Cell while maintaining his hands-off approach in aiding mortal life. Though with Shin's case, his weaknesses come from inexperience and due to being the last Supreme Kai left after Kid Buu killed the Kais, something that probably would've been avoided if Beerus killed Bibidi and Buu before they attacked. It would probably benefit him to consult the Kais of the other universes.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Reveals at the end of his fight with Super Saiyan God Goku that he never went higher than 70% of his full power and still won. ''Super'' reveals what Beerus is truly capable of if he wants someone dead ''now'' rather than just wanting a good fight: he puts his hand near them, says "Hakai", and they're destroyed. No energy blast or WaveMotionGun, he says the word "Hakai" and they're ''atomized''. [[spoiler:He uses this to kill Present Zamasu, who is on par with post-God Super Saiyan 2 Goku.]]
* IGaveMyWord: When he makes a promise he will keep it. [[spoiler:Though he can find loopholes in his own words like destroying only a tiny piece of the Earth instead of the whole planet.]]
* ImmuneToMindControl: In ''Xenoverse'', he's revealed to be immune to [[spoiler: Demigra's SuperpoweredEvilSide-inducing BlackMagic]].
* InformedAttribute:
** Via {{Retcon}}. It's stated that Beerus sealed Old Kai in the Z-Sword, but Beerus never mentions (or is hinted to have) any sort of sealing ability.
** He claims to have driven the dinosaurs to extinction... but there are plenty of dinosaurs on Earth with no signs of them being even remotely endangered.
* InexplicablyAwesome: He is a god among gods and nothing is known about him. It's implied that Beerus could have been a mortal at one point, unlike the Kais who are born gods, given that Whis offers Goku the job of God of Destruction once Beerus dies. This is further supported by the appearance of [[spoiler:Dypso in the Tournament of Power arc, as he appears to be of the same race of both Beerus and Champa but is definitely a mortal, proving that others like Beerus and Champa exist elsewhere in the universes and aren't necessarily Gods.]]
* InvincibleVillain: Even with [[TheHero Goku's]] additional power-up, it didn't make him go beyond 70% of his power. In ''Super'', this trope is even stronger; though we don't know how much power he used, the tournament against Champa implies it was less than 10% (see TheAce above).
* ItsWhatIDo: He's the God of Destruction. Destroying things is what he ''does''. He's chillingly apathetic about destroying planets for petty reasons, but at the same also doesn't take any sadistic pleasure in it either, making him both the most dangerous ''and the least evil'' villain in ''Dragon Ball Z'' at the same time.
--> '''Beerus:''' ''[in a bored tone]'' The pudding is gone... The Super Saiyan God isn't here... Guess it's destruction time.
* JerkassGods: While it's noted in-universe that [[EarthShatteringKaboom destroying planets]] is [[PunchClockVillain his job]] and is necessary to maintain universal balance, Beerus chooses what planets he will destroy at his leisure and is prone to doing so for [[DisproportionateRetribution ridiculous reasons]], such as losing at a video game, being denied food, or simply because a random bystander offended him. This side of him is shown in much greater detail in ''Anime/DragonBallSuper''; since Beerus has been awake a day and a half longer than in ''Battle of Gods'', we see him actively destroying planets after eating all the food and all his {{Disproportionate Retribution}}s. In a {{flashback}}, Beerus is shown crushing King Vegeta's head into the floor for not finding the most comfortable pillow in the universe, saying he didn't care if he had to steal or kill for it. He also goes out of his way to intimidate Vegeta and calls the Saiyans cowardly since the last time he saw them.
-->'''Goku:''' Are billions of lives just disposable toys for you to play with?!\
'''Beerus:''' But of course they are, Goku. I'm a deity. What's more important: one backwater world, or a battle of gods? It's not even a question.
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** He avoids getting directly involved in the main cast's fights as much as possible, even in the Goku and Frieza fight during ''Resurrection F''. Just as Goku has expressed that the heroes can't rely on ''him'' forever, nor can they rely on the gods to get them out of trouble. However, he ''will'' step in if the situation is dangerous to the universe at large, [[spoiler: like when he atomizes the Zamasu of their timeline to stop his evil plan before it starts]].
** He's ''really'' against Goku's idea of an All-Universe Tournament because it involves [[TopGod Zeno]]; he even threatens to ''vaporize'' Goku. However, knowing that Zeno is even more casual and apathetic to life than even him, destroyed six universes just because something annoyed him, and the losers of the upcoming tournament will have [[spoiler: ''their entire universes'' destroyed]], it's hard to disagree.
** He also berates Goku for his naive nature, stating that it's dangerous to the universe. Remember that he spared Frieza, who tried to destroy Earth, twice (and succeeds in the latter case; only Whis' TimeMaster abilities averted it).
** At the end of the Future Trunks Saga, he coldly tells Gowasu to choose his apprentices more carefully in the future. Because Gowasu [[spoiler: proved to be a HorribleJudgeOfCharacter in regards to [[TheSociopath Zamasu]] and failed to notice his growing darkness until it was almost too late, and also [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom told him about the Time Rings and Super Dragon Balls]], both of which proved crucial to Zamasu's plans, it's hard to disagree.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In ''Super'', he appears to have softened up a bit after the ''Battle of Gods'' saga as long as he's been served food whereas in the movie he's actually a NiceGuy with an unfortunate case of HairTriggerTemper.
* KarmaHoudini: Probably the only straight example in the entire franchise. While he's friendlier and less evil than Frieza, Cell, or Buu, he still gets away with some unpleasant actions: he cruelly used King Vegeta's head as a footstool in front of his own son Prince Vegeta while making him treat him to an Eight-Course Banquet, knowing that he was much weaker than him and with no possibility of defense, and has been responsible for numerous genocides throughout the universe. He is also ready to destroy Earth over not getting pudding. His behavior in ''Super'' unambiguously pushes him to this status, as he's rude, belligerent, manipulative and selfish, and yet never truly suffers any consequences.
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: Downplayed. In the Universe Survival Saga, his handling as God of Destruction comes back to ''really'' bite him when it was revealed that [[spoiler:Universe 7 is one of the universes about to be destroyed by Zeno because it has the second-lowest mortal rating of all 12 universes and the only reason his universe has a chance to be spared was thanks to Goku's proposal for the multiversal tournament. As a result, Shin calls him out for his sleeping habits and Goku called him out for his random destruction of planets. That said, as his Universe is the one to win the Tournament of Power, his poor handling of his responsibilities don't actually lead to any punishment on his end.]]
* KickTheDog:
** In his very first appearance in the anime, he eats a dish that he deems neither particularly good or bad, so he destroys half the planet which undoubtedly dooms everyone on it.
** He sealed Old Kai for millions of years over a disagreement, which in turn denied the Universe a God of Creation governing it for quite some time.
** He slapped Bulma. Granted, she hit him first, but he was the one who ruined her birthday party.
** He seems to take personal offense to Vegeta's existence in ''Anime/DragonBallSuper''. Since his arrival at Bulma's party, he just can't stop kicking and demeaning Vegeta. First, he scares the poor guy half to death by sneaking up on him and quoting [[Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar Kenshiro]] by saying he's already dead. He then keeps giving {{Death Glare}}s to Vegeta as he socializes, mocks the Saiyans for becoming cowardly since Vegeta is humbling himself to keep him happy, and outright calls Vegeta a weakling like his father while smashing his head into the floor.
** In ''Dragon Ball Super'' Episode 41, he doesn't mind Champa [[spoiler:wanting to kill his team because they lost the tournament since it's his universe and he's allowed to do what he wants. He even mocks Goku if he wants to fight a God of Destruction to save them. It took a ''bigger'' God to save them, though.]]
** He has no issue attempting to kill Arale for no real reason, and would've gone through with it if he hadn't gotten stomach issues at the last second.
** {{Subverted}} in Episode 62. [[spoiler: Though he pretends to drop off and not to care about Future Zamasu as he has killed the present one, he actually has gone to plan how to beat them without wrecking the universe.]]
** He threatens to kill Goku and friends should they not come up with a team for the Tournament of Power, which may or may not have been a bluff.
* KickTheMoralityPet: Beerus meeting Goku is the reason why he goes from an amoral, selfish God of Destruction who will destroy anything that [[DisproportionateRetribution annoys him]], to being the overall BigGood in ''Super''. However, Beerus has no problem reminding Goku that ''he'' is a god while he is just a mortal whose power can't compete with him or any God of Destruction. The most vicious kick he gives is when he mocks Goku for trying to stop Champa from [[spoiler: killing his own team]], saying that since Champa is a god, he can do what he wants in his universe, and there is nothing Goku can do to stop it. He also seems to agree with Champa that Goku and the others are pawns to the gods.
* KingOfAllCosmos: He's the DestroyerDeity of Universe 7... and is a LazyBum who has been known to spend ''centuries'' asleep and also a petty, self-professed gourmand whose criteria for destroying planets is "has this planet ticked me off in some way?" and "does this planet have tasty foods I can eat?" It's Deconstructed in that as revealed in the Universal Survival arc, Beerus's quirks earn him the scorn of his fellow Gods of Destruction and mean he's actually ''really bad'' at his job: Universe 7 is ranked the ''second-worst'' Universe in the Dragon Ball multiverse, and it's explicitly stated that this is because of Beerus' laziness, careless use of his powers, and his failure to do his job, such as allowing Majin Buu and Frieza to freely rampage across the galaxy.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Throughout the Moro Saga, Beerus refuses to intervene out of laziness even though he could do so (since unlike Angels, Supreme Kais and Gods of Destruction can step in if a universal threat). This ends up biting Beerus in the ass when [[spoiler:Meerus sacrifices his life to stop Moro. Beerus ends up taking the heat for Meerus's sacrifice and he and Shin are forced to become the Zenos' playmates while their bodyguards take a vacation.]]
* LeanAndMean: Despite not having much muscle mass, he's easily the strongest antagonist in the series.
* LetsGetDangerous: He actually does start out as intimidating, but after his fight with Goku his character is mostly comic relief, standing around commenting on goings-on or making mostly idle threats when someone annoys him. [[spoiler:Then he personally views evidence that Zamasu, a Supreme Kai-in-training, is willing to kill his mentor and planning on embarking on a genocide across the universe(s). Beerus steps in and annihilates Zamasu in less than ten seconds, effortlessly,]] reminding everyone that the title of "God of Destruction" is not just for show.
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: He stands out amongst the Z-Fighters' RoguesGallery. Most other ''Dragon Ball'' villains are utterly sadistic, depraved monsters who kill and destroy whoever and whenever they want ForTheEvulz. Beerus, on the other hand, only destroys [[PunchClockVillain because it's his job]] (though he tends to be [[DisproportionateRetribution rather]] [[HairTriggerTemper petty]] about it) and is quite sociable and friendly when off the clock. He'll keep on delaying the clock, too, as long as you keep his stomach full of good food and keep him of the opinion that blowing up your planet will rob him of said food.
* LoopholeAbuse: He said he'd destroy Earth, [[spoiler:he never said he'd have to destroy all of it]].
** Does this again in ''Dragon Ball Xenoverse'', [[spoiler: where he plans to destroy Demigra, and not even being impressed by the strength of determination of Trunks and the Future Warrior can stop him... after he takes a nap first (and Beerus tends to take naps that last a few years). If someone else, like say Trunks and the Future Warrior, just so happen to destroy Demigra while he's taking his nap, oh well]].
* LoserDeity: Beerus is this in spades. At first, he is presented as a [[TheGodsMustBeLazy lazy]] {{Jerkass God|s}} who gets away with acting like a SpoiledBrat due to his status as a DestroyerDeity. Except we later find out he's ''not'' supposed to act that way and many Gods of Destruction from other universes do a far better job at maintaining order than he does, with most of the threats in ''Z'' being things that Beerus should have dealt with. The more time he spends in the company of the main cast, his initial feared status wanes and the less seriously they take him, where Goku fights with him over food, Bulma can scold or yell at him without consequence, and he is even left with babysitter duty while the rest of the cast go to deal with Broly. Even among his fellow gods, he gets shunned as an outcast due to his universe harboring Goku, whom everyone blames for inspiring the [[GodOfGods Omni-King Zeno]] to create the [[ThereCanBeOnlyOne Tournament of Power]], and Universe 7 having the second-lowest mortal level behind Universe 9.
* LostFoodGrievance: He nearly blew up the Earth because he was furious at being denied a pudding cup.
* ManBehindTheMan: In the manga, he says that he told Freiza to destroy the planet Vegeta.
* MirrorCharacter: He and Son Goku are reflections of each other; both are ManChild warriors who ''seem'' to love food and battle above all, but in truth have become ''so'' powerful that they come to realize that friendship and laughter are far more precious. Whis acknowledges how alike both men are by warmly asking Goku if he'd like to take Beerus' place as God of Destruction when Beerus dies.
* MoodSwinger: A huge one. He can switch from genuinely friendly and polite to chillingly evil in a second. All in all, it can be said that he's quite the nice guy when he's not annoyed... [[HairTriggerTemper but he's annoyed easily]]. It's incredibly easy to piss him off even unintentionally, however, the sight of food (ESPECIALLY Earth's seafood or sweets) will instantly calm him back down to a friendly demeanor. ''Xenoverse 2'' has him reacting to Mira showing him absolutely no respect whatsoever first with blind fury before quickly calming down since the sheer ballsiness of Mira's attitude towards him amused and intrigued him.
* MoralMyopia: He hates when others don't show him the proper amount of respect since he's a god. However, don't expect him to show any respect for others, even the Kais who are supposed to be his equals and counterparts. [[spoiler: Or Whis, who is his mentor and teacher]].
* MoralityPet: After meeting and fighting Goku, Beerus becomes an overall better person. He is more patient and less willing to destroy things that annoy him. He even shows actual care for the mortals he befriends like stopping Zamasu when he attacked Goku, helping Future Trunks in his own begrudging way, and shows real distress that his efforts [[spoiler: didn't save Trunks' timeline]] despite him pretending it didn't. That said, he isn't above [[KickTheMoralityPet reminding Goku of his place]] like him mocking Goku for him being unable to stop Champa from [[spoiler: murdering his own team when they lost the tournament]] and threatening to kill him when Goku doesn't do what he wants.
* MotivationalLie: During the Universe 6 Saga of ''Super'', it turns out [[spoiler: his claim that Monaka was the strongest warrior of Universe 7 was nothing more than a lie to motivate Goku and Vegeta to become stronger.]] In reality, [[spoiler: Monaka is a cowardly weakling who faints at anything that even remotely surprises him.]]
* MotiveDecay: Due to his strength suffering a {{retcon}}. His initial motivation for coming to Earth was to search for a potentially worthy rival in the Super Saiyan God. However, as the ''Super'' era goes on, Beerus seems to become less interested in fighting, often being too lazy to lift a finger against other powerful beings that could give him an even better challenge. Over the course of the series, he refuses to act against Freeza, Goku Black, Broly and Moro, all beings far stronger than Super Saiyan God Goku. Part of this is simply a matter of maintaining tension, as Beerus is strong enough to effortlessly obliterate many of the enemies Goku and Vegeta face. The running gag of him being distracted by Earth's cuisine is a common excuse for his absence, though sometimes he is upfront about being too lazy to fight.
* MovingTheGoalPosts: A meta example. Beerus was initial stated to be about a third stronger than Super Saiyan God Goku, but after the introduction of Super Saiyan Blue and Golden Frieza, WordOfGod is that there's no plans to have Goku or Vegeta surpass him regardless of how strong they get.
* MundaneLuxury: He finds Instant Ramen, considered by us to be cheap junk food, to be the greatest delicacy in the universe.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: It's revealed in ''Dragon Ball Super'' that, as God of Destruction, he can sense a person's KillingIntent, no matter how good of a job to conceal it they're doing. [[spoiler:This is how he knew that Present Zamasu was planning to murder Gowasu, even when no one else could.]]
* MysteriousPast: His past is mysterious since it is heavily hinted that he wasn't born a god, but appointed. He has a twin brother who is the God of Destruction of Universe 6 and his assistant is Whis' older sister, and that is all we really know about him.
* NeverGetsFat: He eats food probably even more than Goku and Vegeta, but is still able to keep his skinny figure in his every appearance.
* NeverMyFault:
** Beerus blames everyone from the Supreme Kai to Goku for U7's low mortal ranking. The Supreme Kai [[{{Hypocrite}} calls him out for sleeping all the time instead of doing his job and Goku points out that Beerus didn't help the ranking by randomly destroying planets]]. In addition, Shin is only IncompletelyTrained in the first place because Beerus didn't do his job and kill Buu.
** Later, he blames Goku and the others for being one member short for the Tournament of Power, saying that they're at fault since they only recruited from one planet. This is despite Beerus doing ''nothing'' to help and spent his entire time stress eating. Even the Supreme Kai went out looking for other fighters while Goku spent his entire time recruiting people instead of training.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: He tears into the Earth's fighters since the only members for team U7 for the Tournament of Power are from Earth (even if some of them are aliens) and now they're one member short since [[spoiler: Buu fell [[RunningGag asleep]]]]. He then blames them for the lack of strong fighters in the universe since they destroyed the Frieza Force[[note]] Though in fairness, that was basically all Vegeta's doing[[/note]]. This gives Goku the idea to [[spoiler: recruit Frieza as the tenth member]].
* NiceToTheWaiter: When he's in a good mood, Beerus can be quite nice. He compliments Lemo's cooking and hires him as a full-time chef in ''Super Hero''. When Goku and Vegeta begin a sparring match, Beerus even tells Lemo to take a break from dishwashing to go eat ice cream with him so they can enjoy the match.
* NighInvulnerability:
** Far beyond standard ''DBZ'' levels. Generally in a ''DBZ'' fight, even a pretty lopsided one, both fighters end up taking some minor, but noticeable damage: [[ClothingDamage Clothes get wrecked]], [[ShowsDamage scratches, cuts, and bruises appear]], etc. However, during his entire fight with Goku, he never shows any signs of battle damage at all from start to finish. [[spoiler:This is a hint he isn't fighting with everything he's got.]]
** Downplayed in Episode 70 of ''Super'', as he does sustain some damage there, in AmusingInjuries fashion. The kicker? He only sustained that much in a battle with ''Champa'', aka another God of Destruction.
* NoBadassToHisValet: Whis doesn't care if Beerus is the God of Destruction and TheDreaded of the universe. He has no problem talking back to him and putting him in his place when he goes too far. [[spoiler: It helps that he's much stronger than Beerus]].
* NobleDemon: Even though he can be very petty, demanding respect, and blowing whole planets for trivial excuses, he IS a God of Destruction, while also being very charming and friendly if you don't provoke him. Also, he keeps his word (though he engages in LoopholeAbuse when he wants) and has PetTheDog moments.
* NoIndoorVoice: Beerus tends to shout at the top of his voice for the pettiest of reasons. This is actually after he's learned to restrain himself and taken this as an alternative to impulsively destroying everything he doesn't like.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: When truly pissed off, he does not waste time screwing around or holding back. He just ''unmakes'' people.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: His behavior makes him seem like he's just some childish jerk. However, he's powerful enough to both destroy an entire planet and take on Goku, with ''one'' finger and the entire ''galaxy'' is frightened of him.
* NotQuiteTheAlmighty: The most powerful god in the series when introduced, though still weaker than Whis (who doesn't count since he's not a god). However ''Super'' reveals that he's subordinate and ''far'' weaker than the real TopGod of the Dragonball multiverse, Zeno, [[TheDreaded who he's utterly terrified of]].
* ObsessedWithFood: He easily surpasses Goku and rivals Majin Buu. If he's not thinking about fighting or destroying planets, he's thinking about food and eating all the food off of a planet before judging to destroy it. Compared to Goku or Buu, he's less a big eater and more a connoisseur (though still a big eater). His love for food is one of the reasons why he hasn't destroyed the Earth.
* OffhandBackhand: He does a OneHitKill version of this with his Hakai technique on [[spoiler:[[Manga/DoctorSlump Dr. Mashirito]] during Episode 69 of Anime/DragonBallSuper]] as a response for the guy being [[TooDumbToLive dumb enough]] to [[BullyingADragon badmouth him]].
* OhCrap:
** While [[TheDreaded Beerus']] mere presence inspires this reaction in other characters, he himself is a victim to this trope. Specifically, whenever the situation involves [[TopGod Zeno]], Beerus loses his cool and immediately becomes respectful toward his superior.
** During the Champa Saga, seeing Goku break out the [[spoiler: Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken]] makes him visibly nervous, especially since Goku created the technique specifically to take on Beerus himself.
** When Beerus tells Whis [[spoiler: to not give Future Trunks any ideas on creating a new timeline because doing so would result in the creation of a new Time Ring and they can't possibly justify that happening to Zeno. Whis replies that when Beerus [[OneHitKill annihilated Present Zamasu]], ''he himself created a new Time Ring'' and thus was in no position to be telling others not to tamper with time. Beerus' expression when Whis tells him this is priceless.]]
* OmniscientMoralityLicense: Beerus as a DestroyerDeity can decide to destroy whatever he likes on a whim and is still considered the BigGood.
* OneManArmy: Of course, ''every'' God of Destruction is this by default, but even among them he stands out by being able to ''hold his own when they're all gunning for him'' in the manga's Zeno Expo, with only [[CombatPragmatist Quitela]] and Belmod, the latter by faking unconsciousness, managed to last as long as him.
* OneHitKill: Can completely ''atomize'' a person just by sticking his hand in front of their face and saying "Hakai". [[spoiler:He uses this to completely annihilate Present Zamasu in an instant.]] For obvious reasons, he doesn't seem to use this on people he wants to actually ''fight'', only using it on people he ''really'' wants dead.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** Both Beerus and Champa are terrified of Zeno and immediately humble themselves in his presence. This is saying a lot since they're both JerkassGods with huge [[SmugSuper egos]], but it makes sense as Zeno has more authority and power than all of the Gods of Destruction ''combined''. Beerus freaks out just from hearing Goku mention Zeno's name during casual conversation.
** After he hears about Goku's visit to Zeno, where Goku nicknamed him Zen-chan, it causes the God of Destruction to have a mental breakdown, falling off his stump and bruising his head on the ground.
** His silence and sorrowful look when [[spoiler: Champa was erased speaks more than any words ever could.]] He was so hurt by this that he broke the fourth wall to make the narrator finish the episode.
* OutsideContextProblem: There have been gods introduced to the series before. However, all of them have been benevolent and eventually surpassed by the Saiyans outside of Trunks and Goten. Then there is Beerus, who can only be described as the [[TopGod god of gods]]. Even the strongest Supreme Kai was only equal with Majin Buu and Beerus is so much more powerful that he makes Super Saiyan 3 Goku look like an insect. [[spoiler: Goku becoming a god himself only manages to bring out 70% of Beerus' power and even Goku and Vegeta going beyond godhood in ''Resurrection ‘F’'' is still not as strong as Beerus]]. Not since Frieza have we seen such a tier difference between the heroes and villains. Not helped that the heroes cannot sense Beerus since a god's aura is incomprehensible to a mortal.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:P-Y]]
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Beerus' execution of [[spoiler: Zamasu]]. It is one of the [[CruelAndUnusualDeath cruelest deaths]] in the series, given how Beerus slowly atomized him to the point that [[spoiler: Zamasu]] is left screaming in anguish, [[FridgeLogic even with his head gone]]. However, given that [[spoiler: Zamasu tried to kill his master and was happy to hear that his future counterpart has been murdering mortals in the future]], it's hard to feel sympathy for him. It should be noted that doing this trope is Beerus's ''actual job'' as God of Destruction, Beerus is just really bad at it, and the local God of Destruction was ''even lazier'' than him.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Obviously, given he's the literal ''God'' of Destruction. Best shown in ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'' when he destroys half a planet by ''poking it''. He and his brother Champa having a tiny spat was enough to reduce most of the room they're in to ''ash'' without one energy attack being fired. It's said if the two of them actually fought it'd be enough to destroy ''both'' their universes.
* PetTheDog:
** In ''Dragon Ball Super'' Episode 29, Bulma smacks him by the head after caller her old. He would've erased her, but he decides to let it slide because she had a good idea.
** In Episode 41, [[spoiler: Beerus uses his wish to revive Universe 6's Earth with all its people. It's heavily implied that he does it because he wants to give a chance to his brother Champa to eat their good food, though he claims that he simply did it to make Champa owe him. Beerus seems to care about his brother, though deep down. Both Whis and Champa are impressed.]]
** Beerus doesn't exactly seem to give [[spoiler: Monaka a choice in serving as his MotivationalLie for Goku and Vegeta]], but still opts to compensate him for his trouble with a reward of vast amounts of treasure.
** In Episode 62, even though to public appearances he's flippant about the whole thing, he's actually quite upset that he didn't [[spoiler: save Future Trunks' world by killing Present Zamasu]].
** In Episode 68, despite being clearly enraged to find out [[spoiler:Bulma is trying to make her own TimeMachine after [[ButterflyEffect the gigantic mess that caused already]]]], he doesn't hurt her or anything, only [[spoiler:destroying the Time Machine and the last component she needed for it to prevent another mess]] and that's that. Small, but given how little it takes for Beerus to blow up ''planets'', that's saying a lot.
** Downplayed in Episode 79, where after Buu managed to defeat Basil, he shares a brief hug with his counterpart Shin out of joy after the match. He didn't even try to awkwardly brush it off afterwards. But then comes the downplayed part, where it comes from the next episode where after the Grand Minister reveals that Universe 7 has the second-lowest rank, he immediately blames the Supreme Kai for his incompetence even though it's his own fault for his universe for having a very low mortal ranking.
** In episode 105, he openly says that he feels Master Roshi more than carried his weight in the tournament given his age, and when Roshi goes on to surpass his limits anyway, Beerus openly expresses respect for the elderly warrior. In episode 106, he expresses praise for Tien Shinhan. Finally, in episode 128, when Vegeta is eliminated, he congratulates him on doing so well.
** In episode 131 it's Zigzagged. [[spoiler: as a reward for Frieza's efforts and cooperation during the Tournament of Power, Beerus has Whis resurrect him. On the flip side, this comes at the cost of causing ''more'' problems for the heroes and the universe at large.]]
** Seeing Vegeta's desire to catch up with Goku his own way without Ultra Instinct, Beerus reveals there are other divine powers that he could learn. While he refuses to ''teach'' Vegeta... he doesn't mind if Vegeta watched him get some exercise and 'stole' one of those powers.
* PhlebotinumKilledTheDinosaurs: Beerus killed the dinosaurs on Earth...[[DisproportionateRetribution for being rude to him]]. However, he's either exaggerating, or he missed a good number because they're still roaming around in the ''DBZ'' universe.
* PhysicalGod: You know how Kami was portrayed as the "overlooker" kind of god and the Kais as the "guardian" and "creator" kind of god? Well, Beerus is a ''god''-god. The most literal of senses imaginable, and it shows. The God of Destruction was said to be '''the''' strongest being fought by the protagonists in the Dragon Ball universe up to that point. To compare, most variations of gods or god-stand-ins in the ''Dragon Ball'' series typically come at the level of or fall below the main cast. Beerus and Whis, who are among the group outright called "gods" in ''all'' languages, however...
* PintSizedPowerhouse: While Beerus is by no means short, the rest of the cast tends to tower over him.
* PokeThePoodle: He does it occasionally. For example, when the Oracle Fish failed to remember the prophecy about the Super Saiyan God, Beerus threatens it... with feeding it twice instead of three times a day
* ThePowerOfTheSun: He can do more than one.
* PreMortemOneLiner: Gives one to [[spoiler:Zamasu]] in the English dub, before using the Hakai technique to atomize him.
-->'''Beerus''': Sorry, Kai, but your luck has run out.
* PsychoForHire: As mentioned, it's his ''job'' to destroy planets. In ''Dragon Ball Super'', however, he mentions that he actually ''enjoys'' seeing the planets he destroys explode, and never gets tired of the sight.
* PsychopathicManchild: He gives off this vibe sometimes, like destroying planets because King Kai beat him at a videogame or because somebody ate all the pudding at a party.
* PunchClockVillain: He isn't really malevolent -- he simply destroys planets because it's his job. He's the ''God of Destruction'' after all, and it's established that his existence is necessary to keep balance in the universe. He does a pretty awful job of this, however, which is why Universe 7 is in an absolutely terrible state.
* PunnyName: [[http://www.kanzenshuu.com/2013/03/30/akira-toriyama-confirms-battle-of-gods-name-puns-again/ According to the movie's scriptwriter]], "Birusu" comes from a Japanese pronunciation of "virus". Shueisha, however, seems to prefer going with "Beers", which is Toriyama's take on the name.
* PurpleIsPowerful: BIG TIME. One of the movie's selling points was that Beerus would be stronger than every villain encountered previously, [[ContrastingSequelAntagonist in direct contrast to Abo and Kado]]... who weren't.
* RealityWarper: In ''Super'', when facing the end-result of their clash (which threatens to blow up the Universe), Beerus nullifies it into nothingness - and later claims to do so with other energy blasts, but ''only'' when he's at full power.
* RememberTheNewGuy: Vegeta and Frieza have both seen him before but have referred to much weaker characters as strongest in the universe.
* ReverseArmFold: His signature pose.
* RipVanWinkle: Beerus can sleep for years, even decades on end. The reason he was absent for the whole of ''Z'' was that he went to sleep before the start of the series and only wakes at the start of ''Super''. This trope isn't played traditionally, since Beerus's life doesn't change in any meaningful way in the interim years, but the fact that he takes such long stretches of inactivity means that he isn't around to handle major threats or do his job.
* SatelliteCharacter: In ''Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF'' and ''Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly''. Ironically, Whis is the one with the importance to the story in both of those movies and Beerus is only is defined as being the one Whis serves and his other student.
%%* ScissorsCutRock: In a sense. Typical {{Shonen}}-style fighting is powerless against [[RealityWarper Gag]] [[StrongAsTheyNeedToBe manga]] characters, but that didn't stop Beerus from nearly obliterating [[spoiler: Arale]].
* SeriousBusiness: Do ''not'' deny Beerus food. It will cost you your planet. Serving him food that he doesn't find sufficiently tasty is also a good way to get your planet destroyed.
* ShadowArchetype: In a lot of ways, he's basically Goku without a moral compass.
* SkewedPriorities: He promised Goku he would destroy the Earth if he won their duel. He won, but he has not honored his end of the deal because Earth's food is just ''that damn tasty''!
* SmugSuper: Beerus knows exactly how powerful he is, not taking any fight seriously, not even Super Saiyan God Goku. He has very good reason to be confident since none of the heroes have been able to fight him in a way that justifies him using full power.
* TheSnackIsMoreInteresting:
** Frankly, he seems to find more genuine joy in feasting on gourmet foods than battle, much like Goku.
** [[spoiler:In ''Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF'', he's much more interested in Earth food than in Goku/Frieza's fight, and admits that the food is what's really keeping him from blowing up the planet.]]
* TheSociopath: Beerus in many ways can be classified as a high-functional sociopath with impulse issues. [[LackOfEmpathy He cares for little outside of his own wants and thinks nothing of the lives of mortals]] since he was willing to destroy the Earth just to force Goku to unleashed more of his power as a Super Saiyan God. [[ConsummateLiar He lies]] and [[ManipulativeBastard manipulates]] others like his entire deal with [[spoiler:Monaka]], to try to bring out other people's abilities. He also needs constant stimulation when he's awake, otherwise, he will grow bored and destroy more planets than he needs to for petty reasons. Part of the reason why he searches for a Super Saiyan God to fight is that he's bored since he hasn't had a real challenge in a long time. [[SmugSuper He also thinks a lot of himself]] since he is a [[PhysicalGod god]] and can basically do whatever he wants, something he constantly reminds Whis of. Finally, it's questionable if Beerus really cares for anyone given that he treats the closest thing he has to a friend as a servant who he regularly bosses around, and his friendship towards Goku and Vegeta is anything but equal. He treats Vegeta as an errand boy and he mocks Goku for wanting to save the fighters from U6 from [[spoiler: Champa]], pointing out how [[KickTheDog powerless Goku actually is compared to the gods and he should remember his place]]. This is on top of him being extremely impulsive. [[DisproportionateRetribution He will destroy planets and solar systems over the smallest things, and he will kill those he considered his friends and allies if things don't go his way]]. With all that said, unlike most characters in ''Dragon Ball'', him being a sociopath doesn't necessarily mean that he's an evil person. [[BlueAndOrangeMorality Just someone with a complicated moral code]]. [[CharacterDevelopment He gets much nicer throughout Super.]]
* SoProudOfYou: Beerus is undeniably proud of Goku after feat after impossible feat during the Tournament of Power, but the crowning moment is when Goku masters Ultra Instinct.
--> '''Beerus:''' What an unbelievable guy.
* SoreLoser: You want to know why King Kai lives on such a small planet? [[http://www.kanzenshuu.com/2013/02/23/dragon-ball-full-color-saiyan-arc-qa-sections-translated/ Beerus blew it up after Kaio beat him at video games, and Kaio then carved one of the chunks into a tiny planetoid.]]
** It's subtle, but during his fight with Goku in ''Super'' he gets noticeably angry when he learns Goku has been holding back (meaning Beerus hasn't been winning as easily as he thought) and is enraged when Goku begins to land solid hits.
** When Whis notes that there's a mortal ([[spoiler:Jiren]]) who even a God of Destruction can't defeat, and that this particular God happens to be stronger than Beerus, Beerus childishly denies being weaker than said God, saying he only lost an arm-wrestle. Whis just smirks.
* SparingTheAces: One of the reasons why Beerus spares the Earth. Goku puts up such a good fight against him that he saw it as a waste to kill him.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Bills/Birus/Beerus/Beers. The official romanization in Japan is "Beers", which respects Akira Toriyama's misinterpretation of the name pun, while nearly the entirety of the English-speaking fandom decided on "Bills" almost as soon as the character was revealed. The English dub went with "Beerus".
* StealthMentor: In the ''Battle of the Gods'' movie, Piccolo notices that Beerus appears to be training Goku more than he is actually fighting him.
* StoryBreakerPower: Not only is he, on the power scale, a 15 to Goku's 10, but his Destruction ability allows him to kill nearly anyone in a single attack.
* StrongAndSkilled: Beerus is a very skilled combatant due to all of the training he received from Whis aka the WorldsStrongestMan of Universe 7. Plus he has the power of a destroyer god that can erase mortals from existence.
* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: At the end of ''Battle of Gods'', Whis states that Goku managed to push Beerus to use almost 70% of his power. Since then, Goku and Vegeta have both become dramatically more powerful than when they first met Beerus, both gaining forms that outright are shown to be something even he is surprised by, but the god is still presented as being far out of their league in terms of strength. This is notable in the manga, as each time Beerus is vaguely shown in a combat situation, he is somehow always ahead of Goku and Vegeta.
* SuddenlyShouting: In ''Super'' episode 11, he has such a moment during his fight with Goku:
-->'''Beerus:''' Congratulations on the cheap shot. But this level of power you're showing me... well, how should I put it? ''IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY EFFECT ON ME AT ALL!''
* {{Retcon}}: A ''lot'' of his commentary in ''Battle Of Gods'' no longer makes sense with how both ''Revenge of F'' and ''Super'' have boosted Beerus's level of strength exponentially, going from "A good bit stronger than Super Saiyan God" to "Far stronger than whatever level Goku and Vegeta are at" and as a result, all the talk of the Destroyer putting Goku as the second strongest person he's ever fought, the oracle fish saying that a Super Saiyan God will be the one to truly challenge Beerus and Beerus himself saying he's used 70% of power, are no longer applicable.
* ThisIsMyHuman: In the presence of other deities from the other universes, this is how he feels about any mortal from his own universe. Needless to say, he has to [[PlayedForLaughs chastise and berate Goku often]] for approaching Zeno without permission. It doesn't help said actions caused him embarrassment.
* TookALevelInKindness: In ''Super'', once his saga is finished he starts mellowing out and becomes more friendly towards Goku and Vegeta- the whole crew, in fact.
** When the pair of Saiyans eat his stash of pizzas, he throws a comical fit and doesn't really make them suffer the way he would've done earlier on.
** His kinder side comes out much more during the Tournament of Power; as Universe 7 starts losing more fighters, Beerus begins complimenting his defeated team and cheering on those that remain. He ''does'' berate the "baldies" (Krillin, Roshi and Tien) for being eliminated, but then adds they still did well all the same. [[spoiler:By the time Gohan is sitting in the stands with him, he begins to compliment him starting with the words "Goku's kid"- before stopping short and correcting himself by using his name instead, and telling him he did well with a genuine, respectful smile.]]
* TooSpicyForYogSothoth: Wasabi is so hot that he starts crashing through nearby planets back at his home [[spoiler:and has to be knocked out by Whis]]. Yes, ''the God of Destruction'' who can easily power through Super Saiyans, [[{{Irony}} can't take a little Wasabi]]. This is a joke referring to the Japanese metaphor called nekojita, often translated as "having a cat's tongue." It means being a person who cannot handle spicy foods. The joke is subverted in ''Dragon Ball Super'', where he narrowly avoids eating wasabi.
* TopGod: Ultimately {{subverted}}. It's true that it's no exaggeration to say that Beerus is a god's god. None of the Supreme Kais are even close to his league. Whereas the Supreme Kais were nearly killed off by Majin Buu, Beerus can easily turn even the strongest form of Buu into space dust. [[AlwaysABiggerFish However]], even discounting Whis (who is an Angel, not a god), there are eleven other Gods of Destruction, of which, while Beerus is never stated to be weak among, he is the noted equal of at least one (his twin brother Champa) and he's weaker than at least one other (implied to be Belmod). And then there's the ''actual'' TopGod Zeno, who makes the usually unflappable and arrogant Beerus ''shit his pants'' the moment it looks like he might be getting angry.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: His reason for not destroying Earth is because, as far as he's concerned, it has the best food in the universe (especially so with Instant Ramen, which is held as being the greatest dish in existence).
* TranquilFury:
** Even when he's either been slighted or is absolutely furious, Beerus keeps his cool and doesn't let his anger manifest other than a withering DeathGlare and occasionally a SlasherSmile. Although Goku does manage to push him into an UnstoppableRage near the end of their battle and tries to destroy the Earth, he snaps out of it after Goku destroys his SphereOfDestruction.
** In ''Super'' despite his much more HotBlooded temperament, he slips fully into this when [[spoiler:killing Zamasu. No yelling, no screaming, he just sticks his hand in front of Zamasu's face, utters the word "Hakai," and watches him be completely disintegrated with the only sign of his rage being an irritated glare.]]
* TheUnfavorite: In the manga at least, Beerus is looked down upon by all of the Gods of Destruction, including his own brother. Rumsshi is disgusted knowing that Beerus intervened with Zamasu, and all of the other Gods of Destruction look down on him because during a hide-and-seek game that Zeno hosted, Beerus ended up sleeping for 50 years, which got Zeno so upset he threatened to destroy the multiverse. All of the other Gods of Destruction had to pacify him to do so.
* UngratefulBastard: He continues to act condescending and aggressive to the heroes even after he learns that they stopped Buu from killing Kaioshin ([[CantLiveWithoutYou which would have killed Beerus too]]) and slaughtering all remaining life in the universe.
* UniquenessDecay: At the time of his introduction, Beerus set the deity bar to new heights being a PhysicalGod who completely dominated the heroes. Then he's shown to not be the only God of Destruction, with the introduction of his twin brother Champa who is equally as powerful as him. Finally, the Tournament of Power shows off all twelve Gods of Destruction of each universe, and Beerus is shown to be a poor example compared to his peers. It also introduces Jiren, a mortal who is ''stronger'' than the Gods of Destruction. Then after Jiren, Broly shows up, who is God of Destruction level himself.
* UnstoppableRage: Beerus will fly into a rage at the slightest annoyance and only will manage to calm down if food is involved or if Whis subdues him.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Beerus and Whis investigating [[spoiler: Goku Black]] leads them to U10 where they asked about the Time Rings, something that Zamasu didn't know existed until that moment. They also bring Goku, who is obsessed with fighting Zamasu since he heard he's a fighting prodigy among the Kais and he may be [[spoiler: Goku Black]]. This leads to a sparring match where Goku beats Zamasu, and Zamasu becoming obsessed with Goku ''and'' seeing mortals as stupid and dangerous.
* VictoryByEndurance: How he beats Goku in ''Super''. Instead of forcing Goku to give up like in the movie, Beerus wins by letting Goku use up his energy reserves since he has ''far'' more energy than him and Goku is still new to godhood and doesn't know how to conserve his energy.
* VillainRespect: He comes to greatly respect Goku and the others to the point he spares the Earth from destruction for the time being. On top of that, in the ''Battle of Gods'' movie, as he's about to kill Vegeta, he says Vegeta would die with his honor intact.
* VillainsOutShopping: When not destroying planets, he's generally eating and sleeping. In ''Battle of Gods'', he even acclimates into the festivities at Bulma's birthday party, eating Sushi, playing bingo, and breakdancing.
* WarriorTherapist: Has shades of this. During his fight with SSG Goku, he gives Goku advice about his new power, namely, he highlights Goku's pride in his own strength and says it will be the end of him. Crosses into TricksterMentor. Piccolo points out that Beerus seems to be training Goku rather than fighting him. Though his temper does get the better of him a few times.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: According to Akira Toriyama, he and Frieza used to get along, considering they both destroyed planets. However, [[NoodleIncident there was a time where he got carried away with Beerus and learned the hard way that he shouldn't be trifled with]].
* WhatTheHellHero:
** During the Future Trunks Saga, Bulma really gives him an earful, since, despite his repeated insistence that it would happen since he killed the Present Zamasu, Goku Black was ''not'' RetGone and is still wreaking havoc in the future.
** He tears into Goku for endangering the multiverse after he asked Zeno about the tournament he promised. The rules of the tournament state that the loser [[spoiler:gets their universe destroyed]].
** During the Universe Survival Saga, when it's revealed that [[spoiler:Universe 7 is the second-worst universe]], he calls out the Supreme Kai for deciding to take a back seat and let the mortals of that universe grow stronger on their own, which is what the Supreme Kais are ''supposed'' to do. The Supreme Kai rightfully shoots back that Beerus is at fault too since all he does is sleep.
** He blames Goku and his group for being short one member for the Tournament of Power since they only recruited from one planet. He then chews them out for destroying the Frieza Force, which had the most powerful warriors in the universe.
* WillfullyWeak:
** He's so strong that he intentionally holds back against all of his opponents. Even against Goku's Super Saiyan God Form, he never used more than 70% of his full power. Which makes sense, since according to Akira Toriyama's "scale of 10" numbers, SSG Goku's max matches only 60% of Beerus' power. This is later somewhat retconed into him having lied about how much power Beerus was using by a massive amount. It turns out that in ''Super'', he has the ability to [[OneHitKill completely atomize]] ''anyone'' he chooses to simply by putting his hand in front of them and saying "Hakai". He didn't put a single ounce of effort into slapping Bulma, did he?
** It's telling the only times Beerus has actually used his full power and suffered visible injury is when fighting ''other'' Gods of Destruction. It's also implied in the manga that he's powerful even by ''God of Destruction'' standards when he manages to do very well in an all out melee between the gods of destruction, despite most of them gunning for him specifically.
* TheWorfEffect: A comical yet soundly telling example. [[spoiler:After defeating even Super Saiyan God Goku, Whis knocks him unconscious in a single chop to the head.]]
* WorthyOpponent: He comes to see Goku and Vegeta as this, going as far as to say that they needed to keep an eye on them. This also extends to the Future Warrior in ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse'', as in the one-sided beatdown between him and Gotenks, Gohan, 18 and Piccolo, they're the only ones able to fend off his assault, something that will actually make him snap out of his rage momentarily to [[WowingCthulhu compliment them on.]]
* YouGotGuts: [[spoiler: ''In Xenoverse 2'', after Mira, the Masked Saiyan and the Time Patroller appear and start a brawl while he's talking to Goku during their climactic battle, Mira tells him to shut up and wait. Beerus, taken aback by the blatant disrespect, gives him a few extra minutes to wrap things up and clear off.]]
* YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm: Beerus is impossible to sense if you're not a god.
