!!Kings Row Boys School
[[folder:In General]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kings_row_logo.png]]
Kings Row Boys School is a boarding school famous for producing excellent fencing athletes, one of whom happens to be Olympic champion Robert Coste. Having experienced something of a decline in recent years, the current team hopes to remedy that by winning the stateside championship. The school's motto is "[[GratuitousLatin Unitatis Mirabile Vinculum]]" which roughly translates to "[[ThePowerOfFriendship The Wondrous Bond of Unity]]."
----
* BoardingSchool: Kings Row is a private school that requires its students to wear the proper uniform for each class and imposes a strict curfew for those living in the dorms.
* DressCode: Students are required to wear royal blue blazers or vests with the school's logo along with black pants and red ties.
* MeaningfulName: The dormitory in Kings Row is called Castello which translates to "Castle" in Italian. This fits well with the school's ThemeNaming.
* NobleMaleRoguishMale: Seiji and Harvard are the Noble Males while Nicholas and Aiden are the Roguish Males.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The current crop of members in the school's fencing team vary greatly in terms of skill and personality, giving way to some rather hilarious situations or drama.
* TrueCompanions: The fencing team becomes this for one another as they get progressively better in both fencing and camaraderie.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Nicholas and Seiji have this dynamic once they get closer with one another.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nicholas Cox]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nicholas_cox.png]]
Nicholas is the central protagonist of the series. A strong but inexperienced fencer, he's motivated in getting better, especially as the "illegitimate" son of legendary fencer Robert Coste. His skills and drive land him at the prestigious boarding school Kings Row where he deals with being the odd man out while working daily to be a great fencer and to best his rival/friend, Seiji.
----
* ApatheticStudent: Outside of fencing, it's revealed that Nicholas is generally a bad student. He has a habit of sleeping in class, picking fights with other students, going to detention, and earning horrible grades. It's enough to make Assistant Coach Lewis question if giving him a scholarship is the right idea.
* BadBedroomBadLife: Before moving to his dorm at Kings Row, Nicholas was forced to live in a squalid room with cracks to solidify his status as a low-income worker.
* BastardAngst: Nicholas is the "illegitimate" son of fencing prodigy Robert Coste who left him and his mother. For the most part, he took care of himself while living in poverty with fencing as his only escape.
* BefriendingTheEnemy: Although Nicholas couldn't initially stand being in the same room as Seiji, he gradually decides to befriend him instead after realizing there's more to him than being a mere rival.
* BettyAndVeronica: Is the Betty to Jesse's Veronica.
* BookDumb: He doesn't do so well with academics which only compounds his inferiority complex.
* ButNotTooBi: Is confirmed to be bisexual by the author, though his current target of interest happens to be a guy.
* ChafingAgainstTheDressCode: During his first few days at Kings Row, Nicholas has trouble picking the right uniform to wear for certain occasions.
* ConfoundThemWithKindness: Nicholas inadvertently does this to Seiji during their friendlier moments.
* CripplingOverspecialization: While Nicholas being left-handed may help him overcome weaker opponents, it's not enough to stand up against foes with more experience under their belt.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Nicholas's whole backstory involving his father and living in poverty fits the trope quite perfectly. The first volume even shows how he had to find work just to make a living and even attended a SchoolOfHardKnocks prior to enrolling in Kings Row.
* TheDefroster: Ends up becoming one for Seiji.
* {{Determinator}}: Despite his lack of experience, Nicholas is determined to best Seiji and prove his worth in the world of fencing. He even has his own DeterminedExpression to match.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Zero. Only time will tell if he'll go from FromZeroToHero.
* FishOutOfWater: Despite the warm welcome he received from the fencing team, there are times when Nicholas feels like he doesn't belong due to how vastly different Kings Row is compared to his old life.
* FriendlyRivalry: With Seiji, after the latter gradually warms up to him.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: At his old school, he used to get into detention repeatedly for getting into scraps with other guys.
* GreaterNeedThanMine: When Nicholas sees how much being in the fencing team means so much to Eugene, he is willing to relinquish his scholarship in order to give the latter a chance. Fortunately, it turns out Eugene did the same for Nicholas, leading Coach Williams to pull some strings so both of them won't be kicked out.
* GreenEyedMonster: Nicholas harbors a lot of resentment towards the more experienced Jesse who has their father's love, attention, and dreams involving fencing. When Jesse shows up at Kings Row for a practice demonstration and Nicholas sees Seiji's interest be piqued, he becomes angered at the thought of Jesse stealing Seiji away from him as well.
* HorribleHousing: Due to living in poverty, Nicholas was forced to stay at a cramped room with only the bare essentials. Things only look up for him once he moves to the Castello dorm in Kings Row.
* HotBlooded: Nicholas is enthusiastic and passionate about becoming the best fencer he can possibly be.
* IncompletelyTrained: He finds himself way out of his depth at Kings Row as his speed, strength, and luck can't quite overcome the lack of fundamentals that his old coach failed to instill in him.
* InstantExpert: Averted hard as Nicholas is considered one of the weakest members of the team despite his unknown factor status. That being said, he's a quick learner who can adapt to situations and has good rapport with most of his teammates.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Ended up forming a bond with Coach Joe even though he's not exactly the most reliable adult around.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite being antagonistic towards Seiji and being prone to picking fights, Nicholas is ultimately a good person who yearns for acknowledgement and respect.
* LamarckWasRight: There is absolutely no reason Nicholas should have inherited his world-champion father's fencing skills -- it's a learned skill, not a genetic ability.
* LeftHandedMirror: Both Nicholas and Jesse are this to Seiji.
* LogicalWeakness: Nicholas's inexperience is perhaps his most glaring weakness as he makes mistakes that most seasoned fencers tend to avoid. He also has horrible technique which prevents him from capitalizing on his many strengths.
* LongLostRelative: Nicholas is the illegitimate son of Robert Coste, making him Jesse Coste's younger half-brother, not that Jesse or Robert are aware of that fact.
* MagneticHero: Nicholas eventually becomes this after winning for the first time and earning the respect of his teammates through hard work and determination. Even some of the fencers from other schools including Jesse take a keen interest in his budding potential.
* MeaningfulName: His own name means "Victory of the People", befitting for someone who aims to reach beyond his current station and succeed.
* PennyAmongDiamonds: Due to his poor background, he's essentially this among the team.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Seiji's blue. When fencing, their shoes are ColorCodedForYourConvenience.
* ScholarshipStudent: He's only able to attend Kings Row on account of receiving a scholarship thanks to Coach Williams. However, it hinges on him actually making it on the team and keeping his grades up.
* SouthpawAdvantage: Nicholas being left-handed gives him an edge over other fencers as many of them are more accustomed to fighting right-handed opponents.
* TooDumbToFool: Because of his straightforward personality, Nicholas isn't fooled by any of Aiden's mind games during their match.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: His profile states he loves cheeseburgers with extra pickles and no sauce.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Nicholas's lack of experience and exposure within the fencing world gives him the advantage of being an unknown variable to the rival schools, making them underestimate his true potential and allowing him to make strides here and there.
* UnskilledButStrong: Nicholas was improperly trained by his coach before attending Kings Row (who admittedly told Nicholas he wasn't the best coach). To compensate for his terrible technique, he's very strong and left-handed which gives him an edge in the sport. Coach Williams even mentions that Nicholas ''is'' a prodigy, his issue is that when up against fencers like Seiji, he's facing prodigies who have accumulated over a decade of training.
* WellDoneSonGuy: One of Nicholas's deep-rooted issues is his desire to be acknowledged and accepted by his father Robert. This is partially why he becomes insecure whenever people mention his half-brother Jesse.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Nicholas could have tried to sway Coach Williams into letting him take the reserve spot after their brief bonding the night before. Instead, he asks her to give it to Eugene because he had worked so hard for it despite suffering several years of failure. Coach Williams is so impressed by this act of integrity that she convinces the principal to let the team have two reserve spots instead of one.

[[folder:Seiji Katayama]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seiji_katayama.png]]
Seiji is Nicholas's reluctant rival and deuteragonist of ''Fence''. Seiji is an exceptionally skilled fencer and athlete who trains consistently to be the best. He has an unfriendly, icy disposition, and only people that can seem to crack his facade are Nicholas and Jesse Coste, the son of Robert Coste and Seiji's former friend and rival. Seiji accepts no weakness and strives to one day beat Jesse in a match to avenge his loss to him several years ago.
----
* TheAce: Seiji is a well-renowned fencer and an excellent student, even invoking fear from most of the fencing team tryout athletes as well as his opponents. He is also ranked 2nd in the national ranking for fencing competitors under the age of 16 with his rival Jesse overshadowing him.
* [[AloofDarkHairedGirl Aloof Dark-Haired Boy]]: His aloofness is why he and Nicholas initially don't get along well with one another.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Seiji has this towards Jesse Coste who he seemingly can't beat.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: Seiji initially butts heads with the more senior members of the fencing team in Kings Row. Fortunately, he gets taken down a peg by Aiden.
* AsianAndNerdy: Seiji is Japanese and happens to be excellent at both fencing and academics.
* {{Bishonen}}: He's a good candidate of this trope as Bobby can attest to.
* BrainyBrunette: Has black hair and is rather intelligent.
* BrutalHonesty: Seiji's criticism of others is less mean-spirited and more painfully honest.
* CunningLinguist: Can fluently speak French due to having lived in France for over a year prior to his enrollment at Kings Row.
* [[DefrostingIceQueen Defrosting Ice King]]: Seiji gradually starts to like Nicholas, though it takes him a while to admit this to himself.
* FriendlyRivalry: With Nicholas after Seiji warms up to him.
* HumblePie: Gets a serving of this courtesy of Aiden's mind tricks catching him off-guard.
* InscrutableOriental: Being poised, polished, and cold, Seiji also happens to be Japanese-American.
* InsufferableGenius: Seiji isn't afraid to say he's more skilled than anyone in Kings Row which ruffles the feathers of many students during the tryouts. This also contributes to Nicholas's motivation in defeating him.
* {{Jerkass}}: Seiji is this at first, treating Nicholas like dirt and coldly dismissing his teammates as third-rate fencers. Fortunately, he does slowly move away from the trope as time passes.
* LaserGuidedKarma: After spending so much time berating the opponents he's beaten at Kings Row, he gets a dose of his own medicine when Aiden defeats him in a match.
* LightningBruiser: From a fencing standpoint, he serves as this due to being both effective at speed and offense. It's due to his honed prowess that he's made a closer for the team duels against MLC.
* LogicalWeakness: Due to Seiji's overconfidence and perfectionist personality, he gets easily caught off-guard by opponents who psyche him out.
* LonelyAtTheTop: Seiji's skill sets him apart from other students and his teammates.
* MirrorCharacter: How he sees himself and Jesse.
-->'''Seiji:''' I was... Jesse's mirror, I reflected his — glow, his glories and his victories. I used to think it was an honor. We were similar, I told myself, in all the ways that really mattered.
* NoSocialSkills: He's not exactly the most socially graceful person in the story.
* NotSoAboveItAll: When Seiji get splashed with fountain water by Nicholas during a private conversation together, he jovially does it right back at the other boy.
* NotSoInvincibleAfterAll: For all his training and devotion to fencing, Seiji is far from invincible and has even fallen for tactical maneuvers repeatedly.
* NotSoStoic: Gets shaken up whenever he loses in a fencing match. This ends up happening twice upon losing to Jesse and later Aiden.
* ParentalNeglect: Seiji's parents are busy people who've provided every material possession Seiji needed but were emotionally neglectful. Overlaps with ParentsAsPeople, as his father attempts to engage with Seiji's life, but still finds him a difficult child to communicate with.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Nicholas's red. When fencing, their shoes are ColorCodedForYourConvenience.
* StockShonenRival: Seiji doesn't believe in teamwork and is Nicholas's rival.
* TookaLevelInKindness: Tries to be nicer in the novels by joining the team at breakfast and doing things for Nicholas because "that is what friends do."
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Triple fudge sundaes with whipped cream and sprinkles, though he would never admit it out loud.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: With Jesse.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Harvard Lee]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/harvard_lee.png]]
Harvard is the team captain of the fencing team at Kings Row. While being a serious-minded and capable leader, Harvard is also friendly, dependable, and fair. He is always there for his teammates when they need him. Harvard knows when to have fun, but otherwise allows for no distractions at Kings Row. At times, he often puts the needs of others first before his own, such as his best friend Aiden.
----
* AllLovingHero: Harvard genuinely wants the best for everyone and his teammates, sometimes even his rivals.
* AFatherToHisMen: Harvard takes his leadership responsibilities very seriously, and he has the respect of everyone on the teams and those who went to tryouts.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Aiden. He was also classmates with Arune during their grade school years.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Downplayed, but present. In ''Striking Distance'', Coach Williams tells him he's selfless to a fault and that it's fine to actually take care of himself for once.
* TheConfidant: He is this for Aiden who trusts him completely.
* ADoormatToHisMen: Harvard's unwillingness to say no in helping others is the main reason why he can't find the time to improve his weaknesses. Even Coach Williams spells out that he needs to be more selfish for once.
* TheLeader: Takes on this role as the team captain.
* LGBTAwakening: Harvard used to date a lot of girls in the past, though these relationships never really lasted. ''Striking Distance'' has him finally realize that he's gay after going out on a date with another girl that his mother help set up. Aiden is encouraging and thinks this is his chance to finally be with Harvard -- only for Harvard to call up his mother and [[YankTheDogsChain ask her if she can set up a date with a boy]].
* LogicalWeakness: Due to his height, Harvard struggles when it comes to thrusting and parrying in the low lines. It takes a while for him to cover
* ObliviousToLove: Harvard is unaware that Aiden is in love with him, and just sees him as a close friend.
* OnlySaneMan: Has the most normal personality among the main cast and often has to bring everyone together on the same page.
* NiceGuy: Harvard is friendly and nice to everyone. The worst thing you can say about him is that he ignores his needs to put others first. ''Redemption'' deconstructs this when Coach Williams points out how he often puts the needs of others before his own, causing him to neglect his own training.
* StraightGay: Harvard comes to the realization that he's gay in the prose novel ''Striking Distance''. He further exemplifies the trope by displaying no camp characteristics.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Eye fillet steaks with peas and potato gratin.
* TwoferTokenMinority: He's both Black and gay.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Aiden Kane]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aiden_kane.png]]
A member of the fencing team, Aiden is a close friend of Harvard whose steadfast personality greatly contrasts with the former's vain and flirtatious demeanor. Instead of practicing or working on his fencing skills, he would rather date and sleep around with the male student body at Kings Row. Despite his lackadaisical regard to fencing, Aiden is still a formidable opponent, especially with the mind games that he plays with his opponents.
----
* BreakThemByTalking: Aiden loves doing this to psych out his opponents, and succeeds with Seiji. It doesn't work on Nicholas, because as soon as he finds out Seiji lost to this guy, all Nicholas hears out of Aiden's mouth is "Beating me is like beating Seiji."
* BrilliantButLazy: Aiden puts off training and practicing a lot, but still manages to win matches and be competitive due to his talent and penchant for mind games. He also has a good grasp of his teammates' flaws and provides tips on how to better aid them.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Has this attitude whenever someone confronts him for playing with their hearts.
* TheCasanova: Aiden, who makes his way quickly through the male population of the school.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Harvard. This complicated matters for Aiden who has genuine feelings for him.
* DeliberateUnderPerformance: Throughout the training camp arc, Aiden deliberately holds back in order to keep the other fencers from getting a read on him. This irks Seiji who believes such underhanded tactics are beneath him.
* [[EvenTheGuysWantHim Even the Straight Guys Want Him]]: Even a heterosexual boy can't help but be attracted to Aiden.
* ExtremeLibido: Has a rather strong libido as proven by the number of male partners he's gone through. It mostly stems from his own insecurities and constant need to feel loved.
* FlawExploitation: He has no qualms exploiting an opponent's weakness.
* GoodStepmother: Aiden has a multiple of these among the women his father dated, though he's never really reciprocated their attempts to bond with him.
* HatesTheirParent: He seems to have a rather low opinion of his father. The same applies to his own biological mother and stepmothers.
* HeadTurningBeauty: Is one of the most attractive students in Kings Row.
* IntentionalHeartbreaker: Aiden is infamous for breaking the hearts of many men.
* JackOfAllTrades: This is Aiden's role during the team match against MLC, being able to adapt to different situations due to his cunning.
* JustToyingWithThem: Loves to toy with people who aren't Harvard.
* LadykillerInLove: A gay version. Aiden is in love with Harvard, though would rather remain friends for fear of ruining his only genuine bond.
* LazyBum: He has a tendency to skip practice and doesn't apply himself as much compared to his other teammates.
* LovableSexManiac: Aiden is this at his most charitable moments.
* NeverBeHurtAgain: ''Striking Distance'' reveals that Aiden had been badly hurt when one of his stepmothers left the family without saying goodbye. To further twist the knife, he willingly opened his heart to her because she at least pretended to care for him.
* NotAMorningPerson: He is often the last person in the team to wake up and hardly participates in practice sessions.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: It's obvious Aiden is far more than just a pretty face. There's an athlete with a lot of potential underneath that beautiful exterior, but it only seems to surface when Aiden feels like being serious.
* ObliviousToLove: Averted. Aiden is well-aware that many of his paramours have feelings for him, but does not even bother reciprocating due to his own issues.
* OnlyHasSameSexAdmirers: Has plenty of fans who happen to be male, though this is understandable since he attends a boys-only school.
* PrettyBoy: He's very good-looking and has nice hair to boot.
* ReallyGetsAround: His promiscuity is the result of ParentalNeglect as well as his hidden feelings for Harvard.
* ScrewTheRulesImBeautiful: Thinks he's above the rules due to his good looks.
* SmugSnake: Aiden, who barely practices at all, yet is great at fencing while crushing other boys' hearts just as much.
* StepfordSmiler: When it comes to Harvard, Aiden has to conceal his growing feelings with a forced smile for fear of potentially ruining their friendship. Also doubles as a StepfordSnarker.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: According to the ''Striking Distance'' novel, he apparently inherited his good looks from his mother who worked as a career model.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Cupcakes with strawberry frosting.
* TurningIntoYourParent: As much as he hates to admit it, Aiden is turning out more like his father with the way he churns out lovers like he changes clothes.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Bobby Rodriguez]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bobby_rodriguez.png]]
Bobby is a cross-dressing junior at Kings Row Boys School and fencing team manager as of volume 5. He's the first person at Kings Row to befriend Nicholas and is Dante's roommate.
----
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Ends up becoming TheConfidant for Nicholas due to how nice he had been towards the latter.
* CrushFilter: Multiple panels are dedicated to the romanticized way Bobby views Seiji. He does this for other characters who catch his eye.
* CustomUniform: An odd example in that Bobby typically wears female versions of the standard uniform despite there being none due to Kings Row being an all-boys school.
* CuteSportsClubManager: Although Bobby didn't make it in tryouts, he becomes ecstatic when Coach Williams makes him team manager after recognizing his talent for presentations and organizing.
* FirstFriend: Happens to be the first friend Nicholas made upon entering Kings Row.
* TheHeart: Assumes this role throughout the story.
* HeightAngst: Bobby is the shortest at Kings Row and understands he has a disadvantage due to his small size, but after some words of "encouragement" from Seiji and watching Hartley, who is even shorter than he is, fence incredibly well, Bobby swears to overcome his weakness.
* {{Keet}}: Fits this role quite perfectly.
* LatinoIsBrown: Averted. Bobby can easily be mistaken for white due to his paler skin.
* OdangoHair: He prefers styling his hair into two buns when out fencing.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Has this dynamic with Dante.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Loves eating peaches.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Bobby, who dresses in girls' clothing, is a cute and gentle example of the trope.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Eugene Labao]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eugene_labao.png]]
A new member of the fencing team, Eugene has been entering tryouts at Kings Row for several years in a row. Cheerful and slightly mischievous, he tends to be the team's mood-maker.
----
* BirdsOfAFeather: Despite initially butting heads, he and Nicholas end up becoming great friends once they officially join the fencing team as reserves.
* ButtMonkey: He sometimes ends up being the butt of jokes during the story's more humorous parts.
* {{Determinator}}: Has tried to make the fencing team for years. Eventually, his efforts finally pay off as both he and Nicholas take the reserve spots.
* FunPersonified: When not being anxious over his fencing performance, he definitely fits the trope.
* GreaterNeedThanMine: Even though Eugene had worked so hard to join the fencing team, he is well aware that Nicholas needs the reserve spot more in order to keep his scholarship. Therefore, he decides to give it up only to be pleasantly gobsmacked by Coach Williams creating two spots just for them.
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: Averted. Eugene has been getting much better throughout the years to the point that even Coach Williams acknowledges his growth in her personal notes.
* HonorBeforeReason: When Eugene is at the verge of finally being able to join the fencing team at Kings Row, he decides to his spot to Nicholas after realizing the latter needs it more to fulfill his scholarship requirements. Fortunately, both of them make it in together.
* PerformanceAnxiety: Suffers this during Kings Row's match against MLC. However, a pep talk from the team is enough for him to recover and perform his role to the best of his ability.
* PlotAllergy: He develops an allergy for pineapple early on in ''Disarmed'', keeping him from doing much for a while.
* TookALevelInKindness: Eugene was initially a bit of a jerk towards Nicholas early on, having purposely given the wrong directions to the school gym and nicknaming him Zero. However, he does quickly come to like the guy after the latter's first win and even gives up his own place in the team.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: His favorite food is arroz caldo.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Dante Rossi]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dante_rossi.png]]
A junior at Kings Row who currently rooms with Bobby. He has no interest in fencing, but shows up to support Bobby and the team.
----
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Has this dynamic with Bobby.
* TheStoic: Dante is rather stoic compared to the more emotional members of the fencing team, defying the RambunctiousItalian trope completely.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He exemplifies the trope quite perfectly.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Loves his mother's pasta e fagioli.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kally Jenkins]]
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kally_jenkins.png]]
A former member of the fencing team, he is a senior in Kings Row and provides support for the current fencers who've taken his and Tanner's place.
----
* AsianAndNerdy: He's Indian-American and very studious.
* BestFriend: His best friend is Tanner.
* BrainyBrunette: Has black hair and is the most studious fencer in Kings Row.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Tanner's red.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: Kally wears glasses and happens to be one of the smartest students in school.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tanner Reed]]
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tanner_reed.png]]
A former member of the fencing team, he is a senior in Kings Row and is quite close with Kally.
----
* BestFriend: Tanner cares for Kally quite deeply. During the tryouts, he even gets his family to wear banners with Kally's name on them as a way to further rally him.
* FieryRedhead: Tanner has messy red hair and a fiery temper to match it.
* GreaterNeedThanMine: He's such a good friend to Kally that he manages to convince his own family to cheer for the latter rather than him.
* HairTriggerTemper: He gets easily angered by lots of things, most specifically those who dismiss the value of teamwork.
* LetMeAtHim: Has a generally bad temper and often needs to be reined in more often than not when someone seriously pisses him off.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Kally's blue.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jay Jones]]
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jay_jones.png]]
A student at Kings Row who participated in tryouts. He and Aiden once had a fling which ended badly for him, leaving him thirsting for payback.
----

[[folder:Coach Sally Williams]]
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/coach_williams.png]]
[[caption-width-right:150:[[labelnote:Click here to see Coach Williams as a younger competitor.]]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/coach_williams_young.png[[/labelnote]]]]
The coach of Kings Row's fencing team.
----
* CantGetAwayWithNuthin: Subverted in that while she's a strict disciplinarian who strikes fear in the hearts of many students, even she can't tame Aiden.
* DrillSergeantNasty: Has no qualms working her students hard so they'll be in top form.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While not exactly the most polite person around, her heart is definitely in the right place. It's thanks to her that Nicholas has something to look forward to in his future.
* MentorArchetype: Fulfills this role for the Kings Row fencing team.
* SoProudOfYou: She takes pride in Nicholas and Eugene willing to give up their dream for the other despite scolding them for it.
* UnusualEuphemism: Prefers calling forced marathon runs as "suicides" to strike fear in any student who dares to undermine her authority.
* WeaponSpecialization: Despite mainly teaching épée to her students, Coach Williams is far more fond of the sabre and its prominent features.
[[/folder]]

----
* DressCode: Students of this school wear green blazers with gray vests and striped ties.
* LogicalWeakness: MLC is able to gain the upper hand of Kings Row due to them weaponizing their knowledge of the other team's flaws and applying it to their effective teamwork. However, they're unable to account for Nicholas as he's an unknown quantity, causing them to lose their rhythm and enable Kings Row to recover.

----
* BaldHeadOfToughness: He's both bald and a powerful fencer.

* MaliciousMisnaming: Aiden's nickname for him before the match is Felicks de Baldo.
* StoneWall: Arune fills in this role in the team match against Kings Row. However, he's unprepared to deal with the more inexperienced Nicholas's quick offense.

One of the schools participating in the upcoming state championship, its fencers are infamous for their cutthroat playing style and LoopholeAbuse tactics. Their school motto is "Soaring Above" which fits well with the school's bird symbol.

* DressCode: Students of Lowther Hall wear pale blue blazers or vests with royal blue pants and ties.
* EarlyBirdCameo: The Lowther Hall quartet first appear in volume 1 as minor characters who get on Nicholas's case for underestimating Seiji.
* LoopholeAbuse: They have a habit of using the rules to gain the upper hand.
* TheResenter: Lowther Hall's fencing team looks down on Kings Row with disdain and has a fierce rivalry with Macrobertson for outshining them in last year's competition.

----
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Kyle's need to boast about himself and Jesse stem from not being able to match up to his cousin's prowess during their childhood, preferring to instead piggyback on the latter's success as a way to boost his own self-esteem.
* InsecureProtagonistArrogantAntagonist: Has this dynamic with Nicholas during the comic's training camp arc.
* {{Jerkass}}: Is perhaps the most unpleasant character in the story due to his smug arrogance and antagonism towards Nicholas. The fact that he makes Seiji look nice by comparison says a lot. Also counts as a JerkJock.
* KickTheDog: Does this to Nicholas multiple times, deeming him unworthy of being a fencer let alone being Seiji's equal.
* OffendedByAnInferiorsSuccess: Kyle is ticked by Nicholas making good progress during the training camp at Halverton and attempts to give him a CurbStompBattle. Unfortunately for him, it's overshadowed by Seiji's loss to Sungchul and Nicholas casually brushing his defeat off like it was nothing.

----
* CustomUniform: Justified as Macrobertson has a more loose dress code for students.
* DressCode: Macrobertson's students wear black blazers and vests with red trimmings and burgundy pants and ties. Surprisingly enough, they're actually quite lenient when it comes to enforcing their own dress code compared to the other schools.
* FriendlyRivalry: They are shown to be quite cordial towards the other schools with the exception of Lowther Hall.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: Defied in that the fencing representatives of Macrobertson are generally easygoing despite their appearances and act the most friendly towards Kings Row.

[[folder:In General]]
One of the schools participating in the upcoming state championship, they have placed second in the competition for over four years in a row, making them the most likely to unseat Exton's place at the top. Their school motto is "[[GratuitousFrench Nous Sommes PrĂȘt]]" which means "We Are Ready". They are also represented by a {{Unicorn}}.

* PurpleIsPowerful: The school's main color is purple and they're the second strongest contender for the state championship.
* SecretChaser: Halverton is the most persistent when it comes to uncovering the secrets of the other schools. After hearing about Kings Row's exploits from MLC, they invite their team over for the sole purpose of monitoring them for any flaws or advantages. Hilariously enough, they [[{{Hypocrite}} don't take it very well]] when Seiji shares some of their own flaws to Exton.
[[/folder]]

* OpposingSportsTeam: Exton fulfills this role by being the biggest target of the protagonists. However, the trope is downplayed by them being depicted as more arrogant and less villainous.

* BettyAndVeronica: Is the Veronica to Nicholas's Betty.
* EntitledToHaveYou: He feels entitled to have Seiji as his only rival which greatly ticks Nicholas off.
* ExperienceEntitlement: Due to having been groomed into greatness since his childhood years, Jesse has a tendency to be rather smug especially when facing lesser opponents.
