[[folder: Recruit]]
[[quoteright:299:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/r6s_recruit.png]]
A generic Operator available for players who don't have any other Operator or is on a SelfImposedChallenge. The Recruit does not have any special gadgets, and instead comes with several generic gadgets. Their weapons come with modifications already installed and cannot be altered.
----
* FeaturelessProtagonist: Recruits have generic looks and lack any special mechanic/gadget that every other Operator has.
* FlatCharacter: Recruits have no bio and no personality to speak of.
* IndividualityIsIllegal: There is a common tradition in Siege where if one person plays Recruit, then everyone ''MUST'' play Recruit (and have identical loadouts). If a member of the team doesn't follow this "rule", chances are they will be disciplined by their team mates [[DisproportionateRetribution with a shotgun blast to the face]].
* LethalJokeCharacter: The Recruit is usually not considered a viable pick due to lacking in specialized gadgets. However, Recruits can carry two sets of secondary gadgets, allowing them to flood the objective with frags, flashes, and smokes, and sometimes, that's all that's needed.
* MasterOfNone: Most of the time, the Recruit doesn't have anything special to note and is easily outclassed by most Operators.
* MoreDakka: An attacking Recruit can equip an M249 as their primary weapon, but due to the noted above IndividualityIsIllegal rule, if one person plays recruit with an M249 then everyone gets an M249.
* SawedOffShotgun: Defending recruits have the M870, and attacking Recruits have access to the Super Shorty secondary shotgun.

! Rainbow
[[folder: Six]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angela_bassett_six.jpg]]

->''"We must be the shield that safeguards the civilized world from those who wish to do it harm. No matter how or where our enemies strike, no matter what defense they cower behind, Team Rainbow must stand ready."''

->'''Real Name:''' Aurelia Arnot
-> '''Voiced By:''' Creator/AngelaBassett[[note]]Creator/KotonoMitsuishi (Japanese)[[/note]]

The new "Six" (director of Team Rainbow) in ''Rainbow Six Siege''. She appears exclusively in promotional footage and Situation briefings.
----
* AdvertisedExtra: She appears quite prominently in Ubisoft's advertising for the game, but she barely appears in-game.
* BigGood: Head of Team Rainbow.
* BlackBossLady: She is the director of an international Counter-Terrorism unit, played by Angela Bassett.
* [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep Everyone Calls Her Six]]: Was known only as "Six" or "Rainbow Six Actual."[[note]]"Six" is the NATO designation for a military commander or leader.[[/note]] Her real name wasn't revealed until after she'd left Rainbow.
* InkSuitActor: The cinematic footage definitely modeled her face to great detail.
* PutOnABus: In 2019 [[https://rainbow6.ubisoft.com/siege/en-us/news/152-343973-16/the-new-six-harishva-harry-pandey she left Rainbow to take a position at the US State Department]].

[[folder: "Harry"]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/r6s_harry_36.PNG]]

->''"Rainbow needs people who will challenge the future of the unit. And those who will remind it of its roots. It needs people who can be [[TitleDrop the scalpel and the hammer]]."''

->'''Real Name:''' Harishva Pandey
-> '''Voiced By:''' Andy [=McQueen=]

The new Rainbow Six as of ''Operation Burnt Horizon''. First appears in the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C61bhu8eI3o The Hammer and the Scalpel]] short film, he was the previous Six's psychological and military culture advisor.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: Harry was Six's psych and military culture advisor and it's implied he played a major role in the selection of operators. This is one of the reasons he was eventually promoted to Six.
* BenevolentBoss: The Hammer and the Scalpel short film has him discussing Dokkaebi's issues with Thatcher's treatment of her, explaining to her that Rainbow needs people that reminds them of their roots (Thatcher) and can also push the unit further (Dokkaebi).
* BollywoodNerd: Intelligent, laid-back, and the current Director of an international counter-terrorism task force.
* CharacterDeath: He is killed by Deimos at the beginning of ''Year 8'', when he confronts Harry at his own home.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: Harry does not at all beg Deimos to spare him, and he instead sits calmly behind his desk, waiting for the inevitable, before telling the man (in his own way) to go fuck himself.
-->'''Harry:''' ''Now if you don't mind, I happen to find you exceedingly fucking boring.''
* FirstNameBasis: He asks to be called "Harry" instead of "Six."
* HenpeckedHusband: Humorously alluded to, as Harry makes this joke when Dokkaebi brings out the knife that Thatcher gave to her.
-->'''Harry:''' ''Ah, careful! My wife has a strict policy about knives in the house. And ''I'' have a strict policy of not pissing off my wife...''
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Despite being a psychologist! Bringing on NIGHTHAVEN was a decision objected to by Ash, while Harry believed it was better to have Kali on Rainbow's side than being a wild card. By Year Seven, NIGHTHAVEN ramped up tension in the team and Kali eventually pulls out, poaching five Rainbow Operators (Smoke, Pulse, IQ, Ela and Finka) along with her own team.
* TheShrink: A downplayed example. Harry was the psychology advisor for the original Six, and his behavior during his conversation with Dokkaebi in The Hammer and the Scalpel is reminiscent of a therapist's. Whether he's an ''actual'' shrink for any of the operators remains to be seen, but background materials indicate he at least cares for their emotional and mental well-being.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: During training exercises, Harry often puts operators [[HeadbuttingHeroes who don't like each other]] on the same team to force them to cooperate. After all, Rainbow needs to function as a cohesive whole. However, this friction can sometimes lead to more drama, such as Ash and Kali in ''The Playbook''.

[[/folder]]
[[folder: Squads]]

After NIGHTHAVEN's departure from Rainbow, the Team was reorganized into four distinct squads that have their own respective roles and expertise, all aimed at combating the resurgence of criminal and terrorist activity in the world.

!!Wolfguard
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/r6s_wolfguard_emblem.png]]

->''"To be of service is why so many of us are dedicated to what we do."''
--> -- '''Doc'''

Specializes in humanitarian operations where the preservation of life is paramount and collateral damage must be minimized. Wolfguard Squad mostly consists of Operators with backgrounds in hostage rescue, crowd control, field medicine, and trauma care. The Squad is currently led by Gustave "Doc" Kateb.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Obviously wolves, specifically of the NobleWolf archetype.
* GoodIsNotSoft: As with real-life police work, "preservation of life" also implies preserving the bad guys's lives if possible. Indeed, a quick look at the Operators's special abilities will reveal that they're all about protection, healing, and non-lethal weaponry [[note]] Granted, [[GameplayAndStorySegregation actual gameplay is a different story]], but it's worth noting that the Shock Wire, the Shock Drone, and the Electro Shield were not designed to outright kill enemies.[[/note]]. That said, Wolfguard won't hesitate to put a bad guy down with lethal force when innocent lives and/or the Squad's lives are in jeopardy.
* GoodWearsWhite: The Squad's standard uniform is predominantly white, with some shades of blue and grey.

!!Ghosteyes
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/r6s_ghosteyes_emblem3.png]]

->''"The most insidious enemies have to be met in the darkness where they hide."''
--> -- '''Caveira'''

Rainbow's black operations unit, responsible for conducting clandestine activities like infiltrations and assassinations. Ghosteyes's Operators are typically those experienced in stealth, subterfuge, intelligence-gathering, and covert elimination. The Squad is currently headed by Taina "Caveira" Pereira.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Spiders, which accentuate the Squad's cunning nature.
* StealthExpert: One of Ghosteyes's schticks is getting in and out of places undetected. The Squad has a variety of tools for this, ranging from advanced signal scramblers that fool enemy cameras to [[Main/CharlesAtlasSuperpower speedy and precise footwork]] that can help them sneak up on people.
* UnscrupulousHero: Roughly half of Ghosteyes is made up of individuals willing to get their hands dirty in order to get the job done. Unsurprisingly, many of these Operators are also defined by a dark past or a childhood trauma that has conditioned them to accept such tactics as a necessary evil.

!!Viperstrike
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/r6s_viperstrike_emblem.png]]
->''"Precision and discipline are the hallmarks of excellence, and Viperstrike cannot accept anything less."''
--> -- '''Hibana'''

A highly-adaptive quick reaction unit that also lends support to the other Rainbow Squads. Viperstrike's Operators espouse discipline, versatility, responsiveness, and surgical precision, allowing the unit to handle almost any kind of operation with excellence. Currently, the Squad's leader is Yumiko "Hibana" Imagawa.
----
* TheFace: The Squad is stated to be the (un)official face of Team Rainbow, as it often works closely with other police and military units across the world.
* JackOfAllTrades: This is Viperstrike's intended role. Taking a gander at its roster of Operators, one will quickly realize that the Squad pretty much has all of its bases covered - hard breach, area denial, anti-gadget, intel-gathering, etc.

!!Redhammer
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/r6s_redhammer_emblem.png]]
->''"You can’t always keep things in a straight line. Sometimes you need an explosion."''
--> -- '''Thermite'''

Intended for direct action operations that require brute force and aggressive tactics against the opposition. Redhammer Squad is comprised of Operators who are well-versed in demolitions, explosives, forced entry, and heavy weapons. The Squad's current leader is Jordan "Thermite" Trace.
----
* RedIsViolent: Unlike Wolfguard, Redhammer does not balk at inflicting collateral damage. In fact, almost every member of the Squad specializes in causing destruction and chaos, and they are certainly not subtle about it. One should not be too bothered with casualties if Redhammer is deployed, especially with regards to [[IDidWhatIHadToDo the methods that the Squad used to accomplish the mission]].
* StuffBlowingUp: In a nutshell, this ''is'' what Redhammer is all about. A fair number of Operators in its ranks are trained in deploying explosives of some kind, like exothermic charges, breaching rounds, and incendiary grenades.
\
[[/folder]]

! NIGHTHAVEN
[[folder: In General]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/r6s_nighthaven_emblem2.png]]

->''"When excellence is given space and resources, success is guaranteed."''
--> -- '''Kali'''

A private military company founded by Jaimini Kalimohan "Kali" Shah after she left the Indian military. Highly-proficient, profit-oriented, and with a near-spotless record for success, the PMC was originally recruited into Team Rainbow to prevent it from being hired by wealthy criminal organizations, terrorist groups, and other similarly dangerous elements. Unfortunately, it turned out that Kali had other plans in mind and eventually she and her people severed ties with Rainbow, but not before pinching several of its own Operators into her employ. Since then, the two organizations have been at odds with each other.
\
Aside from its mercs, NIGHTHAVEN also has the Quantum Concepts and Robotics (QCR) division, responsible for conducting research and development as well as providing the PMC with advanced military hardware. This division is headed by Anja Katarina "Osa" Janković.
----
* FacelessGoons: NIGHTHAVEN's regular grunts have face-concealing helmets and personal armor that completely hides their body's profile. [[MuggedForDisguise Rainbow takes advantage of this]] in the ''Vector Glare'' comic to infiltrate one of the company's bases in Singapore and to get the drop on Kali ''a second time'' during the ''Solar Raid'' cinematic.
* NGOSuperpower: [[DownplayedTrope Sort of]]. NIGHTHAVEN lacks the numbers and materiel to completely overtake a country, but its men do have QCR's top-of-the-line gear that can give any superpower's military a run for their money. Not to mention, the PMC has its own vehicles and aircraft, as well as various facilities across the world including an R&D lab in Singapore and at least one offshore base to operate out of. Given that Kali is constantly seeking high-paying contracts and recruiting more people for her PMC, it probably won't be long before NIGHTHAVEN becomes a full-blown superpower of its own.
* PrivateMilitaryContractors: In contrast to most examples found in the ''Tom Clancy's'' franchise, NIGHTHAVEN is not an openly malicious or gung-ho mercenary company, nor is it directly involved in a NebulousCriminalConspiracy. Also, the characters seen thus far run the gamut from anywhere in the SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism, as a wholly-idealistic ex-cop like Aruni is working alongside a humorless, coldly-pragmatic mercenary like Grim.
* TheScapegoat: Kali and her mercs were purposely framed by Deimos as the culprit behind several crimes such as the assassination of Masayuki Yahata and the proliferation of high-tech weapons among various criminal groups, which caused Rainbow to act directly against NIGHTHAVEN.
* SigilSpam: Expect to see NIGHTHAVEN's distinctive owl insignia on damn near everything its people owns. Guns, drones, exoskeletons, VTOL aircraft... [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking even their offices' vending machines]].
[[/folder]]
! Antagonistic Groups

[[folder: White Masks]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/white_mask_bomber.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:A White Mask suicide bomber.]]

-> '''Voiced By:''' Patrick Mölleken

A terrorist threat that suddenly rose in various parts of the world, eventually launching a bloody chemical attack on Bartlett University and causing the reactivation of Team Rainbow. They only appear in the Situations and the Training Grounds (formerly called Terrorist Hunt) PvE modes as enemies.

As of the Year 8's Operation Deep Freeze update, the White Masks are removed from the game, alongside the Training Grounds game mode.
----
* BigBad: The White Masks were the overall antagonists of ''Rainbow Six Siege'' at release and are the primary targets in its player-versus-bots game modes.
* ExcusePlot: Yes, they were important to the story of ''Siege''. Beyond that, however, they had no real impact on a what is ultimately a Multiplayer focused game and were presumably eliminated not long after their attack on Bartlett University.
* GodzillaThreshold: Their sheer ruthlessness prompted the reactivation of the Rainbow program. Considering the series' previous villains, that's saying something.
* HatesEveryoneEqually: About the only thing that ''is'' known about them is that they're indiscriminate in their victims, disregarding age, religion, gender, or nationality. In addition to several attacks in America,[[note]]"Bank", "Bartlett University", "House", and "Oregon"[[/note]] they've been in the United Kingdom,[[note]]"Hereford Base" and "Presidential Plane"[[/note]], Germany [[note]]"Clubhouse" and "Kanal"[[/note]] France,[[note]]"Chalet"[[/note]] Russia,[[note]]"Kafe Dostoyevsky"[[/note]] a French consulate in Ivory Coast,[[note]]"Consulate"[[/note]] Brazil,[[note]]"Favela"[[/note]] Japan,[[note]]"Skyscraper"[[/note]] Spain,[[note]]"Coastline"[[/note]] Hong Kong,[[note]]"Theme Park"[[/note]] South Korea,[[note]]"Tower"[[/note]] Italy,[[note]]"Villa"[[/note]] a Border Control somewhere in the Middle East,[[note]]"Border"[[/note]] and even the Canadian Arctic. [[note]]"Yacht"[[/note]] Nobody and nowhere is safe from them.
* HellIsThatNoise: The [[SuicideAttack Bombers']] VaderBreath and hissing fuses are absolutely terrifying if nobody has marked the Bomber.
* InTheHood: In addition to their [[MalevolentMaskedMen masks]], their {{Mooks}} wear hooded sweatshirts, colored based on their role. Defensive Ambushers wear dark grey, while offensive Roamers wear light grey.
* LastStand: Once they have five members left, the remaining terrorists will rush the players in an attempt to [[TakingYouWithMe kill them or die trying]].
* MalevolentMaskedMen: It's in their name.
* {{Mooks}}: Most of them are divided between defense-oriented Ambushers (which generally stay behind cover and use assault rifles or shotguns) and offense-oriented Roamers (which wander around the map with assault rifles).
* PlagueMaster: Apparently they engage in bioterrorism, as their trailer shows them [[SyntheticPlague mixing germs]] [[TechnicolorScience in beakers and test tubes]]. The "Bartlett University'' map takes place during a bio attack, and its Article 5 mission involves disarming two active germ bombs.
* SirSwearsALot: About the only "funny" thing about them is their comparatively frequent profanity, especially when [[IShallTauntYou taunting]] their opponents.
--> ''You are fucked now.''
--> ''We've got these fuckers.''
--> ''[[OhCrap Fuck, man down! Enemy fire!]]''
* TheSpook: Nobody in-universe or out knows who the White Masks really are. Their [[MalevolentMaskedMen attire]] and wide variety of weapons hide their origins. They never talk about their grand plans. Their targets (including a suburban house, a bank, an embassy, and even Air Force One) are so varied that [[ConnectTheDeaths finding any connections]] would be futile. And, on top of it all, Team Rainbow is [[SkewedPriorities more focused on fighting them than investigating them]].
* SuicideAttack: In earlier versions of Terrorist Hunt, three or four Bombers appear in every match. Unlike the hoodie-wearing Ambushers and Roamers, Bombers wear [[HeavilyArmoredMook body armor]] and oxygen tanks, giving them a distinctive, terrifying VaderBreath. A later patch outright removed the Bombers, but they're still present in Situations.
* TerroristsWithoutACause: The game refuses to explain or even hint at why they're attacking places all over the world.
* TrapMaster: In the previous incarnation of Terrorist Hunt, they tend to put barbed wire, barricades, and C4 mines in inconvenient places, and their Engineers are specifically tasked with setting these defenses up.
* WesternTerrorists: Maybe? When they do speak, the have nondescript American accents, and what little of their skin we see appears Caucasian. Beyond that, [[TerroristsWithoutACause nothing is certain]].
* WhiteMaskOfDoom: Their most distinctive trait. Every single member wears a white ballistic mask. Fortunately for the players, their masks don't protect them from headshots.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Roaches]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/r6_chimera_rooter.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:A Rooter, preparing to strike.]]
"Roaches" are humans who were exposed to the Chimera virus carried by a fallen USSR space capsule. They are the enemies of the "Outbreak" event of ''Operation Chimera'', where they overwhelmed the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, and threatened to spread further if not stopped.
----
* BodyHorror: All roaches are horribly mutated by the Chimera virus, sporting barbed spikes that burst forth from their bodies in a process that clearly causes them great pain.
* OutsideGenreFoe: ''Siege'' revolves around operatives from various military special forces units, law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies, and civilian organizations working to combat a global terrorist organization. The Roaches introduce a sudden sci-fi horror threat in an otherwise fairly realistic game with no real explanation for its existence.
* PowerUpgradingDeformation: The strongest Roaches look the least human.
* SpikesOfVillainy: Prominently featured in all of their designs.
* TragicMonster: None of them are evil, they're just normal people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
* ZombieApocalypse: How they're treated and what is feared will happen if they escape containment.

!! Grunt
Grunts are the common enemies of Outbreak, either being present on the field upon entering the map or spawning in during in-mission events.
----
* PowerUpgradingDeformation: Grunts can be found in an inactive state, in which they are non-hostile, relatively human-looking, and vulnerable. Once alerted they undergo a metamorphosis, becoming far more monstrous looking and dangerous.
* ZergRush: They're fairly weak on their own, but make up for it in numbers.

!! Breacher
Breachers are highly-volatile enemies that have the ability to blow up walls, even those that are reinforced.
----
* ActionBomb: Their whole role. The pustules on their spines change color from yellow to orange once they're "armed" and ready to explode, giving operators a visual indication of when they're the most dangerous.

!! Rooter
Rooters are special enemies that teleport in and out of the battlefield as they launch coral spikes for attacking and trapping enemies.
----
* HitAndRunTactics: How they work. They appear, fire some spikes, then teleport away once they take damage to repeat the process.
* SpikeShooter: They fire spines to damage and pin down operators.
* TeleportSpam: Rooters can teleport and will do so with gusto.
* TurnsRed: Rooters are at their strongest when they're closer to death.

!! Smasher
Smashers are large and durable Roaches, having mutated so heavily that they feature an armor-like exoskeleton that is basically impenetrable through normal means.
----
* FoeTossingCharge: Smashers are capable of powerful charges, usually when provokes by gunfire or explosions. This is a key component to killing them, as tricking a Smasher into running into a reinforced wall stuns it and allows for a backstab attack.
* HandicappedBadass: They're blind but still one of the toughest Roaches to take down.
* InTheBack: Rather than being vulnerable to headshots like most enemies, Smashers have a weak point on their backs.
* MiniBoss: Basically their role. They hit hard, move fast, and even the most efficient means of killing them requires you to set up three backstabs to pull off.

!! The Apex
Apexes are the "leaders" of the Roaches, as they are able to call in waves of hostile Grunts and Breachers that are stronger than the normal bunch.
----
* BossBattle: They're the closest thing to a boss in Outbreak. Only one ever appears at a time, they summon swarms of buffed Roaches, they have abilities for debuffing and crowd control, and they're resistant to the weaknesses of lesser Roaches.
* FlunkyBoss: An Apex hangs back from combat, relying on summoned swarms of lesser Roaches to do its dirty work.
* InTheHood: They wear tattered remains of hazmat suits, giving the appearance of a hooded robe.
* {{Knockback}}: If an operator gets too close, an Apex can knock them back a good distance.
* NoSell: Unlike lesser Roaches, an Apex can't be killed with a takedown after it's flashed. On top of that, they're particularly resilient to headshots.
* StatusBuff: The Roaches summoned by an Apex are more dangerous than normal ones.
* StatusEffects: An Apex can fire projectiles that blind operators and prevent them from aiming down sights.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Keres Legion]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/keres_patch.png]]
%%[[caption-width-right:350:''"This is how Rainbow dies."'']]
A mysterious mercenary organization with ties to international crime and terrorism. Led by ex-Rainbow operative Gerald "Deimos" Morris, the Keres Legion is responsible for carrying out various attacks against his former unit, such as the assassination of Director Harishva "Harry" Pandey, the attack on their training exercise in Seoul, and the attempted assassination of Rainbow's oversight committee in Emerald Plains.
----
* ElaborateUndergroundBase: The map "Lair", introduced in Year 8 Season 4's ''Operation Deep Freeze'', is set in one of Keres's hideouts in Portugal. The whole place is built into an enormous cave system and features a laboratory, an armory, and a storage room with river access for inflatable boats.
* ForScience: Recordings found in Lair's laboratory indicate that the group has hired scientists (like Fenrir, prior to his defection to Rainbow) to work on new chemical weapons. At least one of these scientists approves of Deimos's disregard for safety and ethics, as she considers them a hindrance to the advancement of science.
* MalevolentMaskedMan: Like the White Masks that came before them, Keres mercenaries wear masks and/or helmets to conceal their identities. Unlike the White Masks, however, the Keres Legion does not have a consistent, unifying theme going for its people - many of them opt for simple balaclavas, while others settle for black ballistic masks, mesh veils (similar to Nøkk), or opaque face shields.
* NGOSuperpower: Keres Legion has a lot of hardware at its disposal, including enough military-grade firearms, miniguns, and attack helicopters to equip a small army. And if Lair is any indication, the group is flush with so much money that it can afford to hire scientists and build at least one Bond villain-esque secret base to operate out of.
