[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:In General]]
* AlmightyJanitor: Company 8 is understaffed and looked down on by the rest of the organization. They also drive the entire plot forward. Shinra, Arthur, and Tamaki are all recruits fresh from the academy but still fight opponents with years more experience than they have and win.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: They're generally considered to be the quirkiest Company within the Special Fire Force, but they're all pretty damn competent at their job when it comes down to it. When they get serious, they show that they're all at the top of their fields and more than make up for their small numbers.
* CoolCar: They use an armored fire truck to get around. They call it a "Matchbox". It is stated that it was based on a [[TankGoodness German tank]]. It becomes a WeaponizedCar after Vulcan joins the team and works his magic. [[spoiler:The tank inspiration becomes even more important.]]
* HeroWithBadPublicity: [[spoiler:After Burns is proclaimed dead by the Empire, Shinra is subjected to a FrameUp and called Burns' killer, and Company 8 is excommunicated from the Empire and branded criminals. Made even worse when Shinra kills Raffles I, causing the entire public of Tokyo to denounce him as "Devil."]]
* InternalAffairs: Company 8 was founded to investigate the other parts of the Fire Force to ensure they are on the level.
* TheMainCharactersDoEverything: Pretty much every revelation about human combustion comes from Company 8's adventures. This is partly justified as the other companies are hiding key information from everyone else or have reasons to not get involved.
* MildlyMilitary: They aren't technically soldiers, but the Fire Force usually is expected to act with a degree of military discipline. Something that barely exists at all with the day-to-day shenanigans the crew usually gets up to.
* OddlySmallOrganization: Lampshaded. The Company began with only four members and it took two years for anyone else to join. In comparison, Companies 1 through 7 have dozens of members each. Captain Ōbi is overjoyed when they get enough members to fill a fire engine. This comes back to bite them in cases of larger scale disasters as, unlike the other Companies, they simply don't have the manpower necessary to resolve the situation. If not for [[GondorCallsForAid calling in reinforcements from allied Companies]] they would have died multiple times.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Said word-for-word by Ōbi. The Company consists of a musclebound Captain who has an abnormal amount of strength (that he says is just from training), a Lieutenant whose serious demeanor doesn't quite match up with his terrible fashion sense, the so-called "Devil" who calls himself a hero, a powerhouse whose power is directly proportional to his "knightly" delusions, a former military officer obsessed with girly things, and a Company 1 transfer who has a bunch of "[[ReluctantFanserviceGirl Lucky Lecher Lure]]" moments. Their support staff includes a genuine NiceGirl nun who's blunt, a shady scientist who's the BlackSheep of the group, an punkish-yet-talented engineer that lives for rock music and creating (as well as destroying) inventions, and another engineer just along for the ride. These are your protagonists people and they wear their quirkiness with unabashed amount of pride.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Regulations and diplomacy go right out the window when they get in the way of the unit saving civilians or each other.
* TrueCompanions: They're prone to constant humorous spats, but are probably the most closely bonded unit in the entire force.

[[folder:Captain Akitaru Ōbi]]
!!Captain Akitaru Ōbi
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KazuyaNakai (Japanese), Creator/JeremyInman (English), Alfredo Gabriel Basurto (Latin American Spanish)
[[quoteright:298:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ff_akitaru.png]]

A former firefighter and the founding Captain of Company 8. Ōbi lacks superpower, but he makes up for it in muscle and charisma. He is determined to amass a Company capable of uncovering the truth behind the Infernals and SaveTheWorld.
----
* BadassNormal: No powers but lots of strength. He often grapples with Infernals and empowered humans with great success despite his disadvantage.
* BigBrotherMentor: He acts this way towards Shinra and Arthur. This briefly causes some competition between him and [[CoolBigSis Hibana]] for the boys' attention.
* TheBigGuy: He's the tallest, broadest and (physically) strongest member of Company 8.
* BoisterousBruiser: He's a loud and hammy type of guy.
* CaptainSmoothAndSergeantRough: He's overall a friendlier and lighter touch authority than his second, Hinawa, and instructs the company in big picture things like the importance of assuring civilians (don't let them see your weapons) and the investigation of other companies.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: How did he get so strong? Heavy weight training every day. He's even introduced doing upside-down sit-ups. [[spoiler:It's implied after the world is remade, he got even stronger thanks to his powerful soul and can now tear apart landscapes with his bare hands.]]
* CoolMask: It's a cage-like design that completely hides his face.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: He often takes a beating as part of a strategy, either to distract his opponent or to get within punching range.
* DoesNotLikeGuns: Even when it is simplified down to pushing a button and completely non-lethal against a non-human opponent, Ōbi has no idea how to fire a shot and is terrified of doing it.
* GuileHero: Ōbi will play politics to justify his Company's investigations and misdirect his foes during combat to ensure victory. He also admitted that he was planning to exploit Hibana's relationship with Iris if he needed to.
* HeroicBuild: Big time from all that training. [[spoiler:He's so diesel, that by flexing in bodybuilding poses, his muscles are hard enough to be impenetrable to the bite of infernal bugs.]] [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist General Armstrong]] would be proud.
* HopeBringer: He's this for the entire team, even for the heroic wannabe Shinra.[[spoiler:He ends up being this for all of Tokyo during the Great Cataclysm and his death is what is needed by the White Clad to trigger the Cataclysm and Shinra's caving into despair.]]
* {{Hunk}}: Square-jawed and handsome? Check. Built like a a tank? Check. Low voice courtesy of Creator/KazuyaNakai? Check.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: He once used train tracks as both a weapon and a ladder.
* LastNameBasis: Out of sheer respect of his status and rank, most people call him "Captain Ōbi".
* TheLeader: The captain of Company 8 who issues orders to Shinra and the other fire soldiers under his command.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: His most commonly used weapon is a large shield he uses for defense, charges, bashing, and when really pushed, throws.
* MadeOfIron: Despite being a perfectly normal human, he's survived having ceilings collapsed on top of him as well as attacks from Infernals and pyrokinetics alike.
* NervesOfSteel: He was a firefighter. It comes with the territory. With no immunity to fire and a world full of crazy powerful people and monsters with fire powers, he still rushes into battle.
* NotSoAboveItAll: He may be the respected Captain of the 8th, but even he has his moments of ridiculousness.
** Case in point, he allowed Vulcan install a bullhead on the cross of the base because it was supposed to allow Vulcan to work at his best while also making the base look cool.
** For the Fire Force's calendar, he devises the arm-muscle-flexing pose they will use and he calls it "turning a python into a cobra, and then you bust out its twin". Shinra doesn't know what to say to this, while Iris and Maki erupt into giggles.
* PileBunker: He carries a Core Annihilating Pile Bunker in his arsenal to punch through the cores of Infernals.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: He is, without a doubt, the physically strongest of his company. In a unit filled with powerful, well-trained pyrokinetics, he was the only one who could fight evenly with an enraged fellow captain [[WorldsStrongestMan Shinmon Benimaru]] and earn his respect when all of his subordinates were defeated in seconds.
* ScarsAreForever: [[spoiler: Even after he's revived and the world is remade, he still retains the scar and stitches on his neck from when his Doppelganger slit his throat.]]
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Ōbi is the model firefighter. But this has historically gotten him into trouble as he used to defy orders to prioritize saving lives. It's not so much of a problem now that he is the one giving orders and his superiors trust him to get results.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Despite being treated like an imbecile, Ōbi uses established policies and his connections within the fire department to investigate other Fire Force Companies.
* SupportingLeader: Shinra is TheHero, but Ōbi gives him his marching orders and gives him the guidance he needs.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: Company 8 have their problems and disagreements, but they all respect their captain Akitaru. It is even said that his charisma is the thing that binds the Company together. Even other captains and criminals like Joker seem to respect him for his attitude.
* WalkingArmory: He says he carries upwards of 60 kg of gear into every battle, far more than any of his subordinates do, to compensate for his lack of powers. That load increases once Vulcan joins and makes new gadgets for him.
* WhatMeasureIsANonhuman: Believes the Infernals need to be treated with dignity as they were once innocent people now doomed to suffer. He also holds the entire company to this standard and wishes to protect the grieving victims from any additional hardship.
* WorthyOpponent: Benimaru seemed to think so during their street fight. For contrast, he thought all of Ōbi's subordinates were too weak for his attention but he was willing to go all out against Ōbi himself.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: He tries elbow dropping villains at one point.

[[folder:Takehisa Hinawa]]
!!Lieutenant Takehisa Hinawa
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KenichiSuzumura (Japanese), Creator/ChristopherWehkamp (English), Noé Velázquez (Latin American Spanish)
[[quoteright:343:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ff_hinawa.png]]

The stone-faced second-in-command of Company 8 and former military officer. Lieutenant Hinawa uses firearms in battle alongside his Second Generation powers to blow his opponents away.
----

* BadassBoast:
** Delivers a subtle one when he fights Kishiri:
--> '''Hinawa:''' From the sparks generated on impact, I tweak each bullet again. *The bullets ricochet off the walls and hit Kishiri.
** Delivers one before striking Arrow head-on:
--> '''Hinawa:''' The reason you didn't kill me is because your first shot didn't hit my left shoulder, which bears the 8th's emblem.
* BizarreAndImprobableBallistics: Hinawa ''will'' shoot you. It doesn't matter how you hide or how you take cover, his abilities allow him to curve bullets and increase their explosive force.
* BlindWithoutThem: He really needs his glasses.
* CaptainSmoothAndSergeantRough: If you are his subordinate, and you're not paying attention during briefings, then he will shoot you with a real gun to enforce company discipline (his powers mitigate the damage from "lethal" to "painful but harmless"). This is in contrast to the personable Captain Ōbi.
* ColdSniper: The most ruthless person in Company 8 is absolutely frigid when he's shooting at distance targets.
* CombatPragmatist: He's merciless in battle, having no compunctions about filling an opponent with lead as soon as he sees them.
* TheComicallySerious: His attitude of total intensity can be funny when it comes to things like grilling.
* CounterAttack: His most terrifying attacks steal the heat and explosive force of his opponent's attacks to increase the force on his own attacks. Without doing this, his attacks are compared to a tank shell. By doing this, Hinawa is a living Electromagnetic Cannon.
* CruelToBeKind: Hinawa's philosophy. When he saw that Maki was a hard-working, honest and kind soul, he disapproved of her place within the military because he knew she would eventually crack under pressure and all her efforts would be wasted. This is why he offered her a place in Company 8, where her moral character would be preserved.
* TheCynic: He doesn't think too highly of Shinra's motivations at first and he's often the voice of cold reason in the Company.
* DeathGlare: He rarely blinks and his subordinates are terrified of him.
* TheDreaded: Aside from Obi, everyone in Company 8 is terrified of earning his wrath.
* DualWielding: Does this out in the field quite a bit.
* ExperiencedProtagonist: He was a former military officer and definitely proves it in fire fights.
* ExplosiveOverclocking: He can magnify the explosive force of a rifle to the extent that it compares to a tank's turret. This utterly ruins the rifle's barrel, so he slots in replacements right there in the field.
* FaceOfAThug: His expression is always uncomfortably intense, to the point of being someone who looks ready to snap at any moment. While he can be fairly gruff, it's clear from his actions and words that he's a very compassionate person and this is just his default expression.
* FightsLikeANormal: He is a pyrokinetic, but unlike the rest of his squad's more flashy displays of power, he uses his powers to augment his marksmanship skills with regular guns and more mundane martial arts rather than throw fire directly.
* FreudianExcuse: In spite of his cynical outer shell, he is a firm believer in [[HopeBringer the Fire Force's job to help the common citizen when their loved ones turn into raging fire monsters]]. This is based on his own past experience, his best friend in the army going Infernal and he hesitated to put him down after previously dismissing his beliefs. He even uses his deceased friend's baptized gun to do his job because he believed that if anyone would want to be put down, they would want it to be done with a blessed weapon.
* GrinOfAudacity: Pulls an epic one in his fight against Arrow.
* GunsAkimbo: Often holds two guns if he doesn't have a shotgun.
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: Inverted. He's the long-range expert while he leaves close-combat to the others.
* HollywoodAtheist: He starts out as this, being a hyper-rationalist who doesn't believe in God and has little respect for religious rituals. It's after he finds he can shoot his friend Tojo after they have a discussion about the peace of mind baptized weapons provides does he warm up a little, even using Tojo's baptized gun after joining the Fire Force.
* JackOfAllTrades: Hinawa is not only a skilled fighter, commander and researcher; he also maintained the Matchbox until Vulcan joined the team. He's so good that Vulcan thought there wasn't anything else he could do, until he started radically modifying everything and developing new technology.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He'll kneecap Shinra in the middle of the office to make a point, but will also ask him if he's worried about something. His whole relationship with Maki is an example of this: Hinawa is extremely hard on her but he does have absolute faith in her abilities.
* KnightInSourArmour: Hinawa is a pretty bitter sounding person but he'll fight for truth and justice till his dying breath.
* KnightTemplar: He is dead serious about his duty to extinguish flames. Even Maki's adorable and harmless familiars are doused as soon as he sees them, to her dismay.
* LastNameBasis: Out of either respect for rank or intimidation, everyone in the Company calls him by his last name.
* LetsGetDangerous: When faced with impossible odds, Hinawa kicks it up a notch and brings out more powerful artillery.
* MarriedToTheJob: He's not interested in getting into relationships. His job is so dangerous that he could die at any moment and anyone could potentially turn Infernal, so he prefers to avoid attachments.
* NoKillLikeOverkill: If pushed hard enough, the man fires gunshots with the power of a tank shell to make certain that he takes down his target.
* NotAfraidToDie: He is a soldier in a world where anyone can die at any time via combustion. Hinawa doesn't care if he is killed in the line of duty. It's his concern for his allies that pulls him through.
* NumberTwo: He is Ōbi's lieutenant.
* OnlySaneMan: Along with Shinra, he's one of the most well-adjusted members of the Company and regularly calls out the others for being ridiculous. The only things that really make him quirky are his terrible fashion sense and utter seriousness to ''everything''.
* PetTheDog: Reminds Shinra that he can always come to him if he needs help.
* PinballProjectile: He can bounce bullets off of surfaces with ease, and he can create several ricochets by manipulating [[https://youtu.be/7eEt9vCQ8cw?t=46 sparks from bullets' impact with objects. The result can be terrifying]].
* PrideBeforeAFall: Being unable to MercyKill his friend in the military before he completely turned Infernal took him down a notch.
* RealMenWearPink: In addition to all of his other skills, Hinawa is the best chef in Company 8.
* SeriousBusiness: Everything, from cooking to modeling, demands Hinawa's utmost attention.
* SetSwordsToStun: As he can freely control the strength of gunpowder explosions, he can limit potency of his gunshots to the point where the bullets only leave bruises against opponents he doesn't want to risk killing. He's been known to use handguns to enforce discipline in the recruits with this method.
* ShotgunsAreJustBetter: He uses one during a long-range battle. His ballistic means that he can increase the range. This is taken up to eleven when he uses extended barrels to make it even more lethal.
* SimpleYetAwesome: He uses his Second-Generation ability "Bullet Speed Control" to alter the force of ignition in his gun. While not as flashy as other pyrokinetic abilities, he is able to alter the force of common handgun bullets however he likes, making it harmless enough to shoot his men for disciplinary purposes without injuring them or powerful enough to take down a tank. He can even change the direction a bullet flies in, making it impossible to dodge them.
* TheStoic: He rarely emotes and prefers it that way, outright saying that he finds emotions exhausting. The rare occasions that get him [[NotSoStoic fired up]] show him even more terrifying than normal.
* {{Troll}}: [[spoiler:When Takigi, Maki's older brother, questions him during the Nether mission on if they had Maki take up a support role in the Fire Force, Hinawa, likely getting sick of his {{Jerkass}} behavior, bluntly tells him that they put her at the frontlines as a meat shield.]]
* WalkingArmory: While nowhere near as packed as Obi, Hinawa carries a ludicrous amount of firearms and ammo for one person. He even has a sniper rifle with multiple replaceable barrels just so he can use his most powerful shots repeatedly after they inevitably destroy the current barrel.
* WeakButSkilled: By second generation standards, his control over flames is relatively weak. However, he is unparalleled in sheer precision. Enough to control ballistics in mid flight and increase or decrease the potency of bullets shot from a rapid fire weapon individually as needed. [[LetsGetDangerous When necessary]] he can show his methods aren't always as weak as they seem.
* WouldHitAGirl: He'd shoot them too, and in a heartbeat. An enemy is an enemy.

!!Shinra Kusakabe
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/GakutoKajiwara (Japanese), Creator/MaayaSakamoto (Japanese; as a child), Creator/DerickSnow (English), Luis Leonardo Suárez (Latin American Spanish)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ff_shinra.png]]

The protagonist of the series and new recruit to Company 8. After his family died in a fire 12 years ago, Shinra joined the Special Fire Force Company 8 to become a hero, saving people from spontaneous human combustion while also aiming to uncover the truth behind his family's death. His Third Generation power [[SwissArmySuperpower allows him to create powerful flames from his feet in a number of ways]].
----
* AntiAntichrist: Shinra is confronted with the idea he is meant to bring about the EndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt with his flames. After the shock wears off, he declares his intentions to protect people and fight against anything that endangers the world.
* TheAntiNihilist: Shinra lost everything that ever mattered to him, but the experience made him realize how important it is to protect people. Believing that all life is worth saving and that everybody means something to somebody. This creates tension with Inca, who refuses Shinra's help and willfully endangers herself.
* AwesomeByAnalysis: Shinra has a knack for deducing enemy strategies, weaknesses, and abilities with only a short observation. If he's given enough time to think in battle, he can figure out a plan to defeat enemies outside his normal weight class.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:Has a child after the time skip but it's not made clear who the mother is. It's heavily implied that the mother may be Iris since they were dating at the end of the series but whether they married is another matter. It may even be Inca, though whether it's a DatingCatwoman scenario or he was merely a donor is left [[DidTheyOrDidntThey ambiguous]]. But most likely the latter since Inca claims to only want Shinra's genes for her child and doesn't actually love him.]]
* BerserkButton: Since his mother and younger brother [[spoiler:purportedly]] died in a fire, any jokes or flippant remarks about burning others, especially children, piss him off severe, as e.g. Company 5 found out.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: A deranged serial-killer-turned-Infernal pushes Shinra too far. As such, Shinra tears his arm off and terrifies him into begging for his life.
* BeyondTheImpossible: Shinra defies all natural laws and [[spoiler:briefly moves faster than light without dying. A literal DivineIntervention allows him to do this]], but it also means he can't do this freely. Licht almost has a mental breakdown trying to figure out how he does this at all, much less without killing himself in the process, and ultimately concludes that the power of Adolla Bursts makes the impossible possible.
* BigBrotherInstinct: All the way back to when Sho was a baby, Shinra looked after him. In fact, Shinra's first act as a "hero" was removing a sheet that had fallen on the baby Sho, blinding him and backing him cry from fear. In the main narrative, Shinra is determined to find his younger brother. [[spoiler:This makes their fight awkward for Shinra, because he is too reluctant to fight his brother, even if he could land a hit. Ultimately, he ends the fight in his favor via a CareBearStare to the afromentioned first heroic act.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: Makes a habit of this. If somebody is about to die, there's a 50% chance Shinra will literally fly into the scene and break their attacker's jaw.
* CantKillYouStillNeedYou: [[spoiler:Being one of the Pillars the White Clad need to complete their conquest means that they can't risk his death. Charon bluntly states that he'll "protect" Shinra just long enough to take him alive for their plans during their fight over Inca. His necessity is the only reason he survived some of his earlier battles with the group, such as his fights with Sho who deliberately avoided using his sword's blade for most of the battle.]]
* CassandraTruth: As a child, Shinra gets blown off by everyone else when [[spoiler:he tries to tell them of the demon's existence in his home. His grinning after his family's death doesn't help matters either]].
* CharacterDevelopment: Shinra is always grinning out of fear and panic when the series starts because of his nervous tic. After gaining more experience over time, he's become sterner and more controlled in a crisis, making his grins either genuine or more rare.
* TheChosenOne: He has an Adolla Burst, but is firmly on the side of the heroes, making him one of the few with innately higher power than most. Then it turns out [[spoiler:both he and Sho were [[MysticalPregnancy virgin births]], aligning with an old Sol legend of the world's hero being born in a similar circumstance. It's even specifically why Shinra's mother gave him his name. Among many of their plans, the White Clad specifically made him a HeroWithBadPublicity to seemingly nip this legend in the bud.]]
* ConspiracyTheorist: After his mother and brother were killed in a mysterious fire, Shinra is convinced that whatever caused this was less "natural". He spends the next 12 years trying to piece together the truth about the tragedy. Unsurprisingly, he's frustrated that [[spoiler:Captain Burns is indeed covering up about what happened]].
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: Prequel in this case, and to the protagonists meisters of ''Soul Eater''. He's the lead protagonist like Maka Albern and has Black☆Star's issues of being demonized by others. His resemblance to Death the Kid is justified as he created Lord Death, who created Kid in his image.
* CosmicPlaything: It turns out that having an Adolla Burst not only makes him a sought-after target of the villains, but [[spoiler:ties him to a literal hell dimension of human perception]], which ends up being a catalyst for misery in his life.
* CovertPervert: A mild example. Shinra does find many of the woman around him attractive and was very interested in seeing Hibana pose nude, but he's not at all happy about seeing or imagining Iris in a state of undress. He feels that her being a nun makes such thoughts really inappropriate.
* DanceBattler: Shinra uses a breakdancing and UsefulNotes/{{Capoeira}} based fighting style combined with his flames during battle.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Shinra's entire family was killed in a fire by some type of demon and when he tried to tell everyone else about it, they blew him off. Eventually, Shinra was raised by Haijima in a glorified laboratory for the next eight years. It's pretty amazing he's so well-adjusted.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Shinra is regarded as a devil and is constantly linked to them through color pages and chapter titles. He's also unflinchingly noble and fights to protect everyone he meets.
* DeadlyUpgrade: Shinra's maximum speed puts such a stress on his body that it risks turning him into charcoal and killing him. [[spoiler:The process also involves disintegrating and reforming, so there is a chance he will simply vaporize if he makes a mistake.]]
* DeityOfHumanOrigin: [[spoiler:Creates the world of Manga/SoulEater, retconning Death as its creator deity, by performing Soul Resonance with his mother and brother as Adolla is a world of perception and they were able to fuse into one body while inside it. Shinra even makes ''Death himself'' as a means of negating despair before letting go of his new powers, as well as his pyrokinesis along with the other pyrokinetics. But he doesn't come away empty-handed since in their place, he attains ''Soul Eater's'' trademark Soul Wavelength abilities.]]
* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:Shinra's body and mind are briefly taken over by the influence of the First Pillar, turning him into a mindlessly violent berserker. It takes a severe beating and HeroicResolve for him to break free.]] It's revealed that [[spoiler:it happened again after he [[MentalTimeTravel traveled back in time with Inca through a Adolla Link]], except this time it was his doppelgänger from Adolla that took over for three months.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Even after 12 years, he still hasn't given up on finding the truth about what happened to his family.
* DivingKick: Shinra likes to use flying or diving kicks as his signature move. As stated in his first fight against Joker:
--> '''Shinra:''' "Heroes always do flying kicks!"
* TheEmpath: Shinra is sympathetic to other people to an almost supernatural extreme. Over time, he gains the ability to detect strong emotions, including KillingIntent, through the Adolla. He eventually weaponizes this [[spoiler:by using this power to drag his brother into a vision of the past, forcing them to experience and share each others emotions and their history. They stop the battle.]]
* ExtremityExtremist: Downplayed. Shinra fights mostly using his feet, but also uses his speed to strengthen his punches if needed.
* FaceOfAThug: Due to his trauma, he often slips into a rictus SlasherSmile simply due to stress. Because of this, many assume that he is mocking them or enjoying others' suffering.
* FighterMageThief: Of the initial three main pyrokinetic fighters of Company 8, he's the Thief. His fighting style is based on speed and mobility and he uses the least traditional attack methods. Unlike most Thieves, he's got the most destructive power of the squad and is the least likely to use underhanded attacks.
* FlyingFirepower: Shinra is able to perform fire-boosted jumps, hover or fly using his powers. Arthur once used him as a steed for this reason.
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: Possibly why Shinra became aroused when Hibana was talking about female bonding while naked (her with Iris and Maki).
* GiverOfLameNames: When Shinra names something like an ability, it'll sound terrible. People often just offer him something else. His {{Hellfire}} attack is the only exception so far.
* GreaterScopeParagon: [[spoiler:Shinra is revealed to be this to the ''Manga/SoulEater'' storyline as a whole, as he was the one who recreated the world that the story would take place in centuries later and even created Lord Death to negate despair. Lord Death created Death the Kid in Shinra's image, and Shinra's tale is still remembered fondly even in the distant future.]]
* GrinOfAudacity: When he's not grinning out of fear, it's one of these, often when his plan is [[CrazyEnoughToWork incredibly dangerous]].
* HellishPupils: Downplayed. Shinra has red pupils that give him a demonic glint in his eyes. Nobody really comments on this. Curiously, flashbacks to his childhood show him with normal eyes until his family died, which is when he encountered a demon-level Infernal.
* HesBack: He is temporally put out of action for a lengthy span of time, only to return smashing up bad guys left and right before using his flames to spell out 'HERO' in the sky.
** [[spoiler:He would later return from Adolla by racing across Tokyo and wordlessly start kicking the falling Moon hard enough to counter Faerie's attempt to crush the entire nation with a ColonyDrop before pushing it back into a safe orbit]].
* TheHero: He's desperately trying to live up to the role of "hero" by saving people.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Mostly anyone that just knows him at a surface level calls him a devil because of his nervous tic of a SlasherSmile, to the point that it's one of his biggest pet peeves. Gradually he tries to fight this perception and does become more of a hero in some people's views, [[spoiler:but we find out that the White Clad have been intentionally cultivating this and humanity's perception to demonize him to make sure that humanity would lose all hope.]] This ultimately culminates in [[spoiler:''almost all of humanity thinking Shinra is a devil'' when he has to kill a fake recreation of Raffles I, which is basically akin to shooting a revived Jesus Christ in the face on public broadcast, and causes him, Sho and Iris to disappear altogether into Adolla.]]
* HeroicBSOD: About the only thing that gets him down for anything longer than a couple minutes is if it involves his family, as shown by his broken expression as a child when he learned his mother and brother died. [[spoiler:Naturally, when Sho slips through his fingers in the Nether due to Haumea and he learns his mother was the Demon Infernal that seemingly ruined his life, he doesn't take it well.]]
* HotBlooded: He's very passionate about his goal of being hero. Also that devilish grin on his face in the heat of battle can be a source of his fiery motivation.
* KickingMyOwnButt: He knees himself in the face to regain his focus and prove his ideals.
* TheLeader: If the Captain or Lieutenant isn't around, Shinra will often be trusted with leading whatever mission his team is sent on.
* LightningBruiser: After some special training, Shinra becomes capable of propelling himself forward at amazing speed. Increasing his speed means increasing the damage of his attacks. [[spoiler:Moving at lightspeed means he can crush a Demon Infernal in less than a second.]]
* MacGuffinGirl: ''Boy'' in this case, but Shinra has the Adolla Brust and it makes him incredibly valuable to various and often villainous groups.
* MagicalGesture: Benimaru teaches him mudra that amplify and/or better control his flames.
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler:Shinra is confirmed to have a child after the timeskip but its not made clear who the mother is. It's heavily implied to be Iris since they were dating in the final chapter BEFORE the timeskip but whether they married remains to be seen. Also, whether Inca got her wish of producing a child with Shinra is also left in the air.]]
* MessianicArchetype: [[spoiler:It's revealed that he was a virgin birth, and his mother gave him his name after her doctor told her about an ancient legend where a child born from a virgin would become the world's savior, just like Jesus. His mother's name is even revealed to be ''Mari'', just like the Virgin Mary. Sho realizes that due to the collective unconcious of Adolla overlapping with the real world, the concept of such such a savior and hero must have been projected into him. He's later revealed to be the embodiment of hope itself, and holds back the Cataclysm by being the hope that goes against humanity's perception of the end]].
* MysticalPregnancy: [[spoiler:Neither he or his little brother have a father and are revealed to have been virgin births.]]
* NiceGuy: Shinra does his best to help everyone he meets. Even people who have set him on fire get his unflinching kindness if he thinks they are worth it. The only person in his daily life who doesn't consider him a friend is Arthur, and that's because they are rivals instead.
* ObliviousToLove: PlayedForLaughs but every time Hibana and him end up alone together, Shinra will focus their important business above whatever she's blushing and muttering about. If she ever directly confront him with her feelings, he just short-circuits or ignores it. Maki and Tamaki both find this incredibly baffling considering Shinra is very good at reading people in literally any other case.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:With Iris in the epilogue, claiming that they are now dating, to Inca. Whether he married Iris has yet to be confirmed.]]
* OhCrap: He freaks out when he encounters an Infernal with horns because it reminded him of the thing that killed his mother.
* OnlySaneMan: You know Company 8 are a bunch of oddballs when ''a guy everybody calls a devil'' is usually the most well-adjusted member.
* PrefersGoingBarefoot: Shinra's powers burn through his shoes whenever he uses them, so he generally prefers to either go barefoot or wear easily removable flip-flops if it's not a formal event. The fire-based nature of his powers and inherent durability of third generation pyrokinetics handles any issues with going barefooted in cold conditions.
* RunningGag:
** He often calls himself by an overly descriptive superhero title that is only relevant to the situation he's in. They all have to end with "Man". He explains his reasoning for doing this to Viktor upon his asking and concludes by saying "That's why I'm Says-Man-A-Lot Man!"
** Other people calling him a demon or devil is another.
* SiblingYinYang: He has black hair and wants to be a hero that fights Infernals, while his brother had white hair and [[spoiler:is leading a cult that is creating them]]. [[spoiler:Except Sho is not really leading the White Clad, since Haumea hijacks his mind when she thinks it necessary.]]
* SlasherSmile: His most defining visual trait. If he's scared or nervous, Shinra will grin like a devil.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: When asked if he and Tamaki would make a good couple, Shinra flat out says that ain't happening. She's not his type. This doesn't stop the fanbase from shipping them anyway, since no matter what he says, they do have good chemistry together.
* SpectacularSpinning: He tends to spin in battle to help him build up momentum and keep attacking.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Shinra feels bad about having to kill Infernals. He also feels bad for Hibana after hearing her sob story, but this makes her angrier.
* TattooedCrook: One of the venomous rumours about him at school was that he was covered in tattoos and tattooed his legs to symbolise the murder of his mother. This is all nonsense. [[spoiler:Until Shinra's Adolla self highjacked his body and convinced Vulcan to give him those markings. Shinra is stuck with them and sees them as a case of EmbarrassingTattoo.]]
* TookALevelInJerkass: Shinra becomes dramatically more violent and cruel after the Stone Pillar Crisis. Disobeying orders, starting fights with everyone and anyone who looks at him funny. [[spoiler:Turns out he was being controlled by his own doppelgänger, and has to put the pieces back together.]]
* TimeMaster: According to Licht's theories while watching them fight, Shinra can,[[spoiler:in a similar vein to his younger brother, also alter time's flow to appear inhumanly fast after he forms a connection to the Evangelist through his Adolla Link with Sho to receive their DivineIntervention. But compared to Sho, who has access to TimeStandsStill by stealing the heat of the universe's expansion, Shinra is able to go back in time upon actually surpassing the speed of light and subsequently breaking up into subatomic particles, which lets him reform.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: Neither he or Arthur will admit it, but underneath all their insults and yelling there is genuine respect.
* WhatTheHellHero: Because the Fire Force is full of corruption and arrogance, Shinra often invokes this. Company 7 actually appreciates his vocalness because it shows he has a spine.
* WhenHeSmiles: At the end of his first mission, realizing he has taken his first step towards his dream of becoming a real hero, Shinra gives his first genuine smile in years.
* WouldHitAGirl: When confronted by Hibana, Shinra has no problem pummeling her until she came to her senses. He also fights a woman from the cult without comment. [[spoiler:He even tried to kick Inca in the face.]]

A fresh recruit to Company 8 with delusions of grandeur. The self-appointed Knight King, Arthur uses his powers to make a [[LaserBlade blade out of plasma]] called Excalibur that can cut through almost anything. He was also Shinra's rival in high school and they can't stand each other.
----
* AbusiveParents: Arthur had the neglectful variety of these, especially on the mother end. [[spoiler:In Chapter 97, Arhur's parents were revealed to be restaurant owners whose restaurant went up in flames and poisoned a customer, putting them in great financial debt. To escape their debts, they skipped out on Arthur when they ran out of food, leaving him alone to go live in the Nether and putting the delusion of him being a knight-king in his head ever since. Upon reappearing in Chapter 204, Arthur's mother revealed she had followed her husband into the Nether out of loyalty due his prophetic visions of the Evangelist and the world's corruption. While Arthur's father had well if not delusional intentions for protecting his son, his mother never believed these visions and simply followed because she loved her husband more than her only son, and had no problem conceiving three more children in the Nether while guiltlessly abandoning her first child, essentially revealing she never cared about him at all.]]
* AchievementsInIgnorance: A part of his abilities. His power to do outrageous things ties to his inability to admit they're nearly impossible for normal people. He memorized pi to one million decimal places to ensure that his [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Round Table would be a flawless circle]].
** While training with Benimaru to unlock their [[DieOrFly Superfire state]], compared to Shinra who unlocked it by genuinely feeling the fear of death, Arthur achieved the same state by imagining his video game's save file getting deleted.
** [[spoiler:During his fight with Dragon, this comes into play once the stage of their fight starts evolving beyond the very world itself, resulting in the force of their attacks eventually [[ItmakeSenseInContext launching the two of them to the moon.]] Since the world is being merged with Adolla, the thoughts and perceptions of humanity are being made manifest, meaning that Arthur's delusional self-image and perception of the world around him literally warp reality to bring his vision into being, [[YourMindMakesItReal allowing him to manifest powers and abilities beyond what he can normally do simply because he believes it's possible 'that' much.]] This allows him to pull off stunts like [[BatmanCanBreatheInSpace breathing and speaking in the vacuum of space]] simply by [[ItRunsonNonsensoleum equipping the Star Ring Vulcan gave him,]] and manifest a BadassCape made out of stars for added protection against Dragon's attacks.]]
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Towards the tail end of his fight against Dragon, Arthur is forced to block a point-blank BreathWeapon with his left arm to protect his only remaining eye, in the aftermath, being left with a charred stub where his hand used to be, still crackling with electricity from deflecting the high-powered plasma blast.]]
* BadassCape: During his battle with Dragon, Arthur's knightly self-image grows to the point where his pyrokinesis manifests a shining mantle of plasma on his back. During their rematch [[spoiler:in space, it forms again and looks like the cosmos itself.]]
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d, Averted, then Justified. [[spoiler:When Arthur and Dragon's fight eventually results in the two of them [[ItMakesSenseInContext being propelled to the moon,]] Arthur initially keeps fighting like nothing's wrong, before the lack of oxygen gets to him and he collapses, unable to breathe. In despair at his WorthyOpponent being unable to give him the fight he desires, Dragon turns away to leave Arthur to suffocate to death... [[ItRunsonNonsensoleum only for Arthur to equip the Star Ring, allowing him to breathe again in the oxygen-less environment and continue the fight.]] Needless to say, the only reason that this works is that the world is currently being merged with the Adolla, resulting in a world where the perceptions of humanity are literally made manifest. [[AchievementsInIgnorance Neither Arthur nor Dragon are fully aware of the scientific reasons why they shouldn't be able to survive in space,]] and Arthur's perception of the fight as being akin to a real-like RPG [[YourMindMakesItReal means that he literally does gain powers and new abilities based on his items and equipment.]]]]
* BookDumb: He hated every lesson taught in a classroom and looks like he's dying when faced with paperwork.
* ButWhatAboutTheAstronauts: [[spoiler:Arthur survives the second Cataclysm because his fight with Dragon took them to outer space before Earth was engulfed in flames.]]
* CallingYourAttacks: One of the things Arthur had to be taught by Benimaru during their training session was to quit doing this (and talking in general) so he can take advantage of the element of surprise.
* {{Catchphrase}}: He'll give a cocky 'Heh' every once in a while. Shinra is convinced Arthur does it when he's confused and just wants to look aloof and cool.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: It's literally the source of his power to the point of PowerBornOfMadness. The more he can fall into his delusions of knighthood, the more powerful Arthur becomes and the stronger his attacks become. Likewise, being brought back down to reality makes him much weaker. This is displayed in full during the White-Clad's attack on Vulcan's workshop, where he's able to go toe-to-toe with two powerful White Clad Knights by himself just by having a more sword-like hilt for his LaserBlade, a cape, and a donkey head strapped to his groin to act like a steed, followed by him getting trounced after realizing how silly and "un-knightly" he really looks.
* CommonalityConnection: While the neither of them can stand each other at all, [[spoiler:one of the only things Arthur genuinely respects Shinra for is [[ThePromise his oath to become a hero and protect his family]], since he himself swore to become a knight to his own family]].
* ContinuityNod: [[spoiler:In Soul Eater, Excalibur mentioned his first wielder was King Arthur of Athurian Legend. It turns out the Arthur he was referring to was Arthur himself who brought Excalibur to life during the Great Cataclysm with his own will.]]
* CoolSword: The hilt of his sword consists of a piece of flame-resistant wood fashioned into a crucifix, with a LaserBlade coming out the top. [[spoiler:When it's destroyed in his fight with Dragon, Vulcan manages to create a new hilt using the payload fairing of a spacecraft that Arthur's parents give them while looking inside the Nether for new material. Arthur then proceeds to christen the blade as Excalibur, and it allows him to draw on greater levels of power in his rematch with Dragon, both through the higher heat it can channel as well as Arthur subconsciously manipulating the power of [[YourMindmakesItReal Adolla]] through his delusions, in effect making him wield unbelievable power because he believes in his CoolSword that much]].
** In chapter 292, it's gradually revealed [[spoiler:Excalibur is original form of the character Excalibur from ''Manga/SoulEater''. When Shinra succumbs to UnstoppableRage against the Evangelist, allowing her to cover the Earth in Adolla's black flames, Arthur, still adrift in Space above [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext somehow]] restores his missing body parts, recovers his blade hilt and uses it to unleash a SwordBeam from space that [[GetAholdofYourSelfMan smacks some sense into Shinra in the depths of the Adolla realm]], punctuated by his screaming "You Fool!!!" at the top of his lungs. Once Shinra restores his resolve to overcome the Evangelist and her nihilistic outlook, Arthur starts talking to his blade hilt, which responds back with '[[{{Catchphrase}} Fool]]', with Arthur commenting that weapons bound to strong feelings would gain a soul from the experience. Notably, Excalibur's hilt bares a resemblance to Excalibur's face from a side-on profile at this point. As Shinra reboots the world, the adolla reacts to Arthur's thoughts and complete's Excalibur transformation into the immortal]].
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: Prequel in this case, and to Black☆Star and Excalibur from ''Soul Eater''. He's the team's idiot big guy swordsman Like Black☆Star, but considers himself a king rather than a master assassin. He alsi possesses many of the annoying quirks that Excalibur possesses, justified in being the one who created the living weapon.
* CripplingOverspecialization: He doesn't really have any techniques to follow a strike that connects but doesn't cut, leaving him at a massive disadvantage.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: To Vulcan's shock, the kid whose common sense and knightly delusions are inversely proportional can definitely back up the latter. In his own words, "Holy crap! That idiot's a powerhouse!"
* CurbStompBattle: If it's something he can cut, Arthur can normally defeat it with a swing of his sword. This means he destroys the standard Infernals very quickly, possibly faster than the rest of the main cast.
* {{Determinator}}: To levels that surpass Shinra's. His absolute mental dedication to his knightly persona means he won't quit regardless of how dim things become and this trait makes him fearless in the face of dangerous threats such as [[TheDreaded Dragon of the White Clad]].
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Of ''Fire Force'', being the most important character in Company 8 after Shinra and his rival.[[spoiler:when Shinra becomes sealed away by the White Clad's plans to remove the HopeBringer during the cataclysm, it's ultimately Arthur who becomes the one that takes the steps needed to start turning the tide against their machinations, killing Giovani, who ultimately kick-started the end of the world, and then Dragon, who by that point was the greatest obstacle to the heroes stopping the cataclysm just with his mere existence, his personal despair being so great that it was practically single-handily fuelling the world's destruction through Adolla, and his immense power being so overwhelming that everybody thought he was practically unbeatable. Arthur actually succeeding visibly unsettles several high-ranking members of the White Clad, who never even considered that he'd be as big an obstacle to their plans as Shinra, and whilst he's unable to do more due to his injuries, him pushing back the world's destruction like that frees Shinra to finish the job in his stead]].
* DieOrFly: Benimaru trains Arthur and Shinra to use their survival instincts to tap into eh full extent of their firepower. Arthur equates the feeling of death to a save file being wiped.
** [[spoiler:Arthur takes the Press of Death concept even further by creating Steeled For Death; a mindset where he accepts he's going to die and devoting every shred of his power to one last strike instead of finding a way to live.]]
* DumbassHasAPoint: Arthur might be a fool, but he's a FearlessFool. He won't stop searching for answers when faced with overwhelming foes or advice from smarter characters. This makes him invaluable when more mature or intelligent people are too worried to continue.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:Even after having the entire lower half of his body disintegrated by Dragon during their final fight, Arthur unleashes a Violet Flash that slices Dragon - ''and the entire Earth from the Moon'' - in half, single-handedly turning the tide against the Cataclysm by taking down its greatest source of despair.]]
* EnlightenmentSuperpowers: His dimwitted status grants him greater senses by being able to tune into the world around him by emptying his thoughts through meditation, which once granted him the power to bypass Giovanni's CombatClairvoyance by attacking without thinking at all. [[spoiler:Once the world starts merging with Adolla, his ability to perceive the world differently compared to others and [[YourMindMakesItReal pull off impossible stunts thanks to that]] results in him being able to manipulate Adolla to his advantage against Dragon, forming a BadassCape made out of stars for added power and protection against him, mirroring the latter's ability to form Black Draconic Armour from Adolla, to which his WorthyOpponent shows satisfaction at Arthur's success in matching his power.]]
* EyeScream: [[spoiler:Towards the end of Arthur's fight against Dragon, he manages to slice off Dragon's left hand, only for the latter to respond by using the BladeBelowTheShoulder formed from his Draconic Armour to slice Arthur across the face in the same motion, scarring him diagonally through his right eye.]]
* FighterMageThief: Of the initial main pyrokinetic fighters in Company 8, he's the Fighter. He only uses his powers to make a traditional melee weapon and fights mostly with self-taught skills, but his raw power makes him a force to be reckoned with. Unlike most Fighters, he's perfectly fine with sneak attacks if necessary.
* FlamingSword: This is what Excalibur is, at the most technical level. The flames are just heated to the point of becoming plasma and focused into a dense blade.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: [[spoiler:At the climax of his rematch with Dragon, he sustains a WaveMotionGun that completely vaporizes his body from the chest down.]]
* HiddenDepths: He's memorized pi to one million places. He's also really good at welding.
* HyperAwareness: Arthur has tremendous reflexes and attempts counter any attack. Because he does this instinctively, it's very easy to bait his response and exploit his openings. Overcoming this flaw is the thrust of his training with Company 7.
* IKnowMortalKombat: Arthur's understanding of knights, quests and strategy comes from video games. It works much better than you'd expect.
* ISeeThemToo: He's able to [[spoiler:detect a presence inside Shinra during his possession by the First Pillar at Company 4's headquarters]], so he might be able to see spirits of the Adolla. He's currently the only one without a direct connection to the Adolla with that ability.
* IdiotHero: Arthur is probably one of the dumbest in existence. He begins a fight with an enhanced Infernal and thinks something is "off" when he starts losing, causing his opponent to laugh and criticize him for making excuses. [[spoiler:Arthur then suddenly realizes he's fighting with his left hand. This isn't him holding back or getting caught in an illusion, ''he literally didn't realize he was using the wrong hand''. He switches to his right hand and promptly [[CurbStompBattle annihilates his foe with a single strike]]. Later, he actually has to remind himself that the "hand he uses chopsticks with" is the correct hand to hold Excalibur.]]
* InsistentTerminology: Arthur will stop himself if he begins to think in a way that puts another part of his public persona above his knightly duties.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Arthur is confident in himself as a Third Generation pyrokinetic, so much that he appears arrogant and cocky all the time, notably for his habit of refusing to use honorific speech regardless of who he is talking to. Arthur has a habit of repeatedly saying "Hmph" in response to people, coming across as stubborn or dismissive. Due to his attitude and casual demeanor, Arthur tends to make bad impressions on people. Despite this, he has a strong sense of justice and has faith in Shinra's heroism and strength.
* KnightInShiningArmor: He heavily leans into Myth/ArthurianLegend for his knight motif. This ranges from calling his sword "Excalibur", calling himself a "knight king", Company's 8 HQ a "castle" and Iris as the castle's princess. Maki is dubbed an "ogre" after she kicks his butt in sparing. Of course, it is a knight's duty to fight monsters (typically whatever birds or small lizards happen to be nearby, which he mistakes for griffins and dragons) and protect the populace.
* TheLancer: He directly contrasts Shinra in terms of personality and appearance, but they always get paired up and he will follow Shinra's directions.
* LaserBlade: His pyrokinetic abilities let him project a plasma blade from Excalibur or other objects that can cut through almost anything.
* LeeroyJenkins: Believing it to be part of the test of the Rookie Tournament, he lunges to attack Joker, who was an intruder, instead of reporting to the brigade despite Shinra's warnings and protests.
* {{Malaproper}}: When Arthur tries to say something noble and knightly, there's a high chance he'll mess it up and say the wrong thing or stumble over his words. Or try to correct himself even after getting it right. The most extreme example is when he just gives up and says "heh".
* ManHug: Gives one to Vulcan when he's at his lowest point, [[spoiler:swearing that he'll save Yu, slay Dragon and save Shinra with the power Vulcan has given him.]]
* ManOfKryptonite: He's this to Haumea of the White-Clad. Normally, she can can neutralize any human opponent by using her electrical powers to control their minds. Arthur is only one immune to this effect thanks to his plasma's charge disrupting hers. He's usually dispatched to counter her whenever anyone becomes aware of her presence in a situation.
* NamingYourAttacks: Arthur makes a habit of using "knight" in the majority of his attack names, likely because it's hard to be creative when you are using a simple punch or kick.
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: Arthur shows no interest in girls and reacts to Tamaki's bad luck with annoyance more than anything.
* NotSoSimilar: He and Shinra might have a lot in common, but they are also completely different. It's why they can't stand each other, yet also function well together. [[spoiler:It's implied Arthur relates to Shinra's denial over killing his family and claims of heroism despite everyone judging him. Because Arthur is also denying the fate of his parents and claims to be a knight despite being mocked for it. The difference is that Shinra is [[CassandraTruth telling the truth]] while Arthur is playing make-believe.]]
* OnlyICanKillHim: Because of his plasma abilities, he's the only person in Company 8 who can counter Haumea's electricity powers. He is often sent to deal with her because of this. This same becomes true of Dragon, to an even greater extent, not only because of the Knight vs Dragon mythos that helps fuel Arthur's delusions during his battles with him, pushing his powers to greater heights in the process, but also [[spoiler:because Arthur is the only person on the planet who genuinely believes Dragon ''can'' be beaten, without any doubt or hesitation. when the world starts merging with [[YourMindmakesItReal Adolla]], this utter belief and certainty allows Arthur to start manipulating the very fabric of the world, able to unleash attacks that hurt the otherwise InvincibleVillain because he utterly believes that Dragon ''will'' be hurt and beaten by his hand. In other words, Arthur is too [[FearlessFool dumb]] or [[PowerBornOfMadness delusional]] to visualize himself losing against Dragon, and it's this precise trait that allows him to face him on equal ground]].
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: He openly says this about Shinra, but it's almost meant as a term of endearment.
* PeacefulInDeath: [[spoiler:Content with finally slaying Dragon and believing he had become the Knight King, and after shouting for Shinra to quit playing the Devil, his final moments are to marvel at how bright the sun is and how he's leaving things to Shinra - who he refers to as a hero - before drifting off towards the sun with Excalibur's hilt left floating behind.]]
* TranquilFury: Arthur is the one to finally [[spoiler:kill Giovanni for good, dismissing the doctor's speeches and achievements as meaningless]]. Given how dopey and relaxed Arthur is, it speaks volumes about how furious he was. He didn't even fumble the speech.
* ParentalAbandonment: Arthur's parents left on an important adventure when he was young. [[spoiler:In reality, they abandoned him after their financial debts became unmanageable. Arthur is just deluding himself, but it's implied he does actually understand why they disappeared on some level. Or so we are led to believe until they reappear in the Nether and he completely believes ever lie they're telling him.]]
* RedBaron: The self proclaimed Knight King. He is also referred to by a narrator as the Violet Flash [[spoiler:during his final battle with Dragon]].
* ShoutOut:
** He's named after Myth/KingArthur, and his sword is named after Arthur's famous sword Excalibur. He frequently makes reference to things from Arthurian legend.
** Blonde hero in an orange jumpsuit who wields a blue LaserBlade. Sure he's not related to Luke Skywalker from ''Franchise/StarWars''?
** His catchphrase "Hi-yo, Silver!" came from ''Franchise/TheLoneRanger'', a different kind of "knight".
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:In chapter 292, Haruma/the Evangelist believes they have won, successfully causing the cataclysm through forcing Shinra into UnstoppableRage by having [[TheHeart Captain Obi's]] doppelgänger give him a SlashedThroat, and covering the Earth in Adolla's black flames. However, right as they're about to goad Shinra into finishing the job by killing her in his anger as well, Arthur intervenes, unleashing a SwordBeam from Excalibur from space that somehow reaches Shinra to smack him to his senses. Having somehow regenerated or restored his missing body parts, Arthur reminds Shinra of his vow to be a hero instead of a devil to him, and that he alone cannot be allowed to succumb to despair or anger, even if everybody else in the world does, re-invigorating Shinra's will to overcome the Evangelist. Notably, The evangelist claimed that they three alone were the last remaining people on the planet, but since Arthur [[ExactWords wasn't on the planet]], they ended up overlooking his presence]].
* StockShonenRival: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]]. Arthur and Shinra are always bickering and treat each other like enemies, but Arthur's typical rival stoicism is just the result of him being simple-minded.
* SwordBeam: Arthur can unleash a crescent-shaped blast of blue flame from his sword, but only uses this move rarely.
* TooDumbToFool: He quickly notices deception and can see things others can't because of his knightly delusions.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Arthur would never admit it, but he does respect Shinra's heroic vision.
* WarriorTherapist: He plays this role briefly. [[spoiler:In the Company 4 arc, he beat Shinra until he snapped out of the mind control he was put under.]]
* WouldHitAGirl: Arthur's chivalry doesn't stop him from fighting women when he has to. Given that Maki completely floored him early in the series, it's safe to say it's a smart choice.
* WouldHurtAChild: When Hinata and "Hikage" are fighting with each other, he ''knees'' "Hikage" in the face and slams "her" into the wall under the (actually correct) pretense that "Hikage" was an imposter and is proven right only a few seconds later.
* WrongGenreSavvy: He'll occasionally think he's the hero of a ChivalricRomance or act like a game character subject to a ClassAndLevelSystem.
* YourMindMakesItReal: His fighting prowess is directly correlated to how much he feels like a knight. The deeper he is in his delusions, the more potent his sword will be and vice versa. This has been exploited by both allies and enemies. [[spoiler:Taken to its logical extreme during the Cataclysm, where the merging of the real world with Adolla literally causes his delusions to manifest in reality, granting him the ability to deal damage to Dragon and even ''breathe in space'' when their battle results in them getting propelled to the moon.]]

A first-class Soldier of Company 8 and former member of the Tokyo military. On the surface, she's a completely ideal co-worker and officer, but dig a little deeper and she's actually more silly than you'd expect. Regardless of her personality, Maki is a capable fighter with powerful Second Generation fire manipulation and deadly hand-to-hand combat skills.
----
* ActionGirl: Maki can and will break people. Shinra and Arthur learned that the hard way during their first sparring match.
* AmazonianBeauty: Maki has a muscular physique, a product of her military background. This causes her to be a bit [[MuscleAngst self-conscious about her body]], not helped some characters likening her to a gorilla. However, even the much thinner Hibana compliments her on her beautiful and well-trained body.
* AnimalMotifs: Her muscular physique and big amount of strength evokes some similarities to a gorilla, to her chagrin, as she hates to be called one (a gorilla cyclops to be more exact). It goes to a point that sometimes her face deforms into the one of a gorilla in comedic moments.
* AntiMagic: Control over fire includes that of third-generation prokinetics. She demonstrates in a spar with Shinra that she can extinguish the flames he ignites from his feet. She can also turn Excalibur's blade or Arrow's flame arrow into more of her familiars.
* AttackReflector: She can use her second-generation abilities to throw attacks back to her foes.
* AuthorityInNameOnly: She’s officially promoted to Platoon Leader of Company 8 after the second battle in the Nether, but as [[OddlySmallOrganization Company 8 has no platoons]] and she already outranked everyone besides the Captain and Lieutenant by seniority, the title is effectively meaningless. She doesn't really mind and happily jokes about how little the new rank changes.
* BadassAdorable: She's a very cute woman who was trained in the military and is a [[CuteWitch witch with fire powers.]]
* BerserkButton: Calling her a "gorilla cyclops" makes her furious. The problem is that she interprets all insults as somebody calling her a "gorilla cyclops".
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Because of her military background, she has a monstrous amount of strength, as seen when she picks up a broken piece of debris for the men of Company 7 without much help. She's second only to the Captain in raw physical strength and durability.
* CoolBigSis: She tries to take this role with the younger members of Company 8. It's less successful than it could be as she's not much older than them and only slightly more mature, so she is just as likely to try to guide them with advice as she is to join in on their antics or start some of her own.
* CuteBruiser: Flail the cultist's men saw a cute girl when they attacked her. If they survived the CurbStompBattle Maki delivered to them, then they can attest to the bruiser.
* CuteWitch: Self-consciousness aside, Maki is very attractive. The witch part is mostly in appearance, and fire familiars.
* CutenessProximity: She adores anything that's remotely adorable, whether it's her familiars or the mascot Mamoru.
* CurbStompBattle: She spends a chapter beating down a whole group of Ash Knights with ease before moving on like nothing happened.
* DaddysGirl: She's the apple of her father's eye. She left the military to join the Fire Force, which caused some strain on their relationship, but they've mostly gotten over it.
* DemonHead: After Shinra and Arthur offend her by calling her "ogress", she imagined them calling her "gorilla cyclops" and [[https://imgur.com/pQMqgWC made a savage face like a gorilla]] before taking on Shinra again.
* DudeMagnet: Her looks get her some attention from the male soldiers during her brief return to the military.
* ExperiencedProtagonist: A former military officer, she definitely shows it off in the field.
* {{Familiar}}: Sputter and Flare (Pusu Pusu and Mera Mera in fan translations) are little orbs of fire Maki makes whenever she can.
* FighterMageThief: Of the three initial main pyrokinetic fighters of Company 8, she's the mage. Her powers most resemble traditional magic and are far more versatile than most of he teammates', especially once she gets her Tekkyo units. As if to drive it home, her uniform gives her a pointed witch hat. Unlike most examples of this, Maki is very much [[DefiedTrope not]] [[SquishyWizard squishy]], being the best unarmed fighter in the squad.
* LadyOfWar: Maki is proper and dignified, even in combat. 90% of the time...
* LetsGetDangerous: She's a LoveFreak obsessed with being more feminine, but she's also a trained Fire Soldier and is not afraid of showing it off if the situation means business.
* LoveFreak: She adores the idea of love. She isn't interested in getting into a relationship herself, [[ShipperOnDeck but she is positively giddy over the idea that Shinra might be the one for Iris]]. She doesn't seem to notice that Iris is a [[NunsAreMikos devoted nun]].
* MagicKnight: She's amazingly talented at both fire control and melee combat.
* MidSeasonUpgrade: She gains [[OminousOwl owl-themed]] iron weapons called Tekkyo Units that use Sputter and Flare to attack and defend.
* MsFanservice: She's a very attractive woman and the camera loves [[MaleGaze zooming in]] on her assets, be it her [[BuxomBeautyStandard ample chest]] or her [[AmazonianBeauty muscles]]. One of her very first scenes is a ShowerScene showing her ToplessnessFromTheBack that displays her athletic figure.
* MuscleAngst: Downplayed, but she was jealous of Iris and Hibana's "flexible and girly bodies" (in her words) compared to her more built body when the three showered together in Chapter 21. That being said, she happily took Hibana's compliment on her muscular body in the same chapter.
* NoGuyWantsAnAmazon: Parodied. Maki laments that her muscles and strength make her unpopular with boys in a scene where male soldiers in her unit are drooling over her in the background.
* NoListeningSkills: Explicitly for insults. Every insult she gets is filtered into "gorilla cyclops," in her head, which sets off her BerserkButton. The one who said the insult usually barely has enough time to complain about not actually saying that before she beats them down.
* ObliviouslyBeautiful: Maki's [[MuscleAngst anxiety]] over her [[NoGuyWantsAnAmazon muscles]] made her unaware of the male soldiers practically drooling over her during her time in the military.
* PlayingWithFire: She is the only person in Company 8 who can control fire like a traditional pyromancer. She also casually plays with fire around the office, which gets her in trouble with the Lieutenant.
* ReluctantWarrior: Despite being a powerhouse, Maki doesn't want to hurt people. She joined Company 8 to help people, so she's not really a fan of having to beat other officers into the dirt. She, however, doesn't have a problem beating the crap of those who put innocent people in danger, as Flail and his men learn the hard way. This is specifically why Hinawa recruited her to Company 8: he knew she would be forced to [[DirtyBusiness stain her ideals]] as a soldier and wanted to give her a place to apply her talents that wouldn't clash with her morality.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: Every member of the Oze family can do a full 180 personality-wise.
* ShoutOut: During her sparring match against Shinra and Arthur in episode 2, the giant fireball she summons is named Manga/BoboboBoBobobo.
* ThinksLikeARomanceNovel: When Shinra rescues Iris at the start of the series, she is quick to call it a MeetCute RescueRomance and even points out how [[BridalCarry sweeping her off her feet princess-style]] is like a fairy tale. She seriously asks Iris, a nun, if this means Shinra is her OneTrueLove. Iris' response? Thinking that Maki's mind is full of "sparkles and rainbows".
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She's very muscular and a powerful Fire Force officer who regularly wears pants instead of skirts, but deeply enjoys cute things, is a LoveFreak, and would like to be more girly.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She absolutely cannot stand ghosts.

!!Tamaki Kotatsu
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AoiYuuki (Japanese), Creator/JadSaxton (English), Valentina Souza (Latin American Spanish)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ff_tamaki.png]]

One of the latest recruits to Company 1 and their resident CuteClumsyGirl. Tamaki is a young woman with cat-themed powers. Despite her somewhat boastful attitude, Tamaki is a kind-hearted person who wants to protect others.
----
* AccidentalPervert: Tamaki is a rare female version. She's lucky if she can take five steps without tripping or snagging her clothing, and ending up half naked (or more). As such, she'll generally crash into someone (usually male) breasts, butt, or crotch first. She'll then complain about that person.
* AmbiguouslyBi: She had a crush on Rekka, is implied to have developed feelings for Shinra in addition to displaying {{Tsundere}} traits towards him,[[spoiler:and eventually goes out with Takeru (aka Juggernaut)]]. However, in one instance she claims that she and Iris would make a better couple than Shinra and Iris. This could be taken as either a hint of bisexuality or simply in jest on Tamaki's part. Although, given that she's only shown attraction towards males throughout the series, the latter case is the most likely.
* AnimalBattleAura: She eventually learns to shape her flames into a cat-shaped armor after training with Company 7.
* BakenekoAndNekomata: Her ability, "Nekomata", is named after the two-tailed cat {{youkai}} of Japanese legend. It also gives her [[CatGirl cat ears and two cat tails]] made of flame that make her resemble a nekomata.
* BrokenPedestal: To [[spoiler:Rekka]], whom she admired and crushed on, once she learns [[spoiler:Rekka's really both a White Clad agent and sociopathic SerialKiller responsible for turning many innocent people -- including [[WouldHurtAChild children]] -- into Infernals. Her attempts to oppose him only net her a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown from Rekka, and she would have been killed had Shinra [[BigDamnedHeroes not flown in and saved her]].]]
* ButtMonkey: Life isn't fair to Tamaki. Her near-supernatural clumsiness results in a "Lucky Lecher Lure", which means she is either stumbling out of her clothes or landing into compromising situations with men. [[spoiler:This is the result of not embracing her established role in Life via sex appeal.]]
* CatGirl: Her abilities give her cat ears and twin tails of flame. She also has narrow pupils that glow. It gives her a very cat-like gaze. [[spoiler:As she taps more into her power, her fire essentially creates cat armor.]]
* CerebusRetcon: Tamaki's "Lucky Lecher Lure" is a RunningGag but ADayInTheLimelight shows that it's a major factor in her issues with self-confidence and poor self-esteem. Its emergence during her middle-school days caused her to be bullied and subjected to constant SlutShaming when a classmate thought Tamaki was flirting with her boyfriend and using the "Lure" as a convoluted excuse. It's also shown that for a while, she actively avoided hanging out with her fellow Fire Soldiers out of fear that her "Lure" would trouble them.
* ClassicalAntiHero: She's extremely clumsy and unlucky, and easily can be afraid because of her lack of experience. But she's a really good and kind-hearted girl, and in spite of her fears and bad luck, she's brave, noble and heroic.
* ClothingDamage: Tamaki has had her clothes torn in a few fights, especially her tights, which get torn and ripped.
* CommonalityConnection: While her {{Tsundere}} behavior towards Shinra and her Lucky Lecher Lure bother him, both find common ground in how they were shunned by others in the past, with Shinra being ostracized for his reputation as a "Devil" and Tamaki being bullied for her Lure.
* CowardlyLion: Her lack of experience means she is often afraid of powerful opponents and dangerous situations. Despite this, she still fights to protect others.
* CuteClumsyGirl: She is known to be exceptionally clumsy, which she blames her "Lucky Lecher Lure" for, resulting in her stumbling into embarrassing or humiliating situations, for which she often blames others.
* DeclarationOfProtection:
** Even though she is terrified, Tamaki stands her ground against a master assassin to defend Iris. [[spoiler:She ultimately fumbles into another embarrassing situation and works with Iris to beat him down in his embarrassment.]] It wasn't the graceful or noble showcase she was hoping for, but Iris clearly appreciates her effort.
** She does this again with [[spoiler:Juggernaut after he passes out from blood loss protecting her from Orochi during their mission to the Nether. She swears to drag him back to the surface even in the face of a horde of Ritsu's zombies.]]
* DefiantToTheEnd: It doesn't matter what she is put through, Tamaki will still put up a fight.
* DoesNotLikeMen: Downplayed. She actually gets along with most of the men she works with, but due to her "issue" Tamaki likes to keep her distance from males.
* EnergyBall: Her Nekomata Fireball attack consists of burning something to create a ball of fire in her hands before charging into her opponent with it, not unlike a [[Manga/{{Naruto}} Rasengan]]. She can also increase its power and size with a capsule from Vulcan that causes a thermite reaction in it.
* ForgotFlandersCouldDoThat:
** She has to remind Shinra that she is a Fire Soldier just like him and not his "dumb damsel". She then demonstrates her ability against Assault:
--->'''Tamaki:''' I was given this uniform for a reason!
** [[spoiler:She later successfully manages to HoldTheLine against both a horde of Ritsu's zombies and two White-Clads to protect a heavily wounded Juggernaut during their mission to the Nether until backup arrived, even after sustaining bad injuries herself in their battle against Orochi.]]
* GirlishPigtails: She styles her hair into two very long twin tails. According to her, she did that because they remind her of the ears of a cat, animals she loves.
* GrewASpine: Following the second mission to the Nether and during her training with Company 7, she's able to reconcile with percieved flaws, shake off her low self-esteem, and become more confident and stronger as a result. [[spoiler:To the point of in her fight against Assault's Doppelganger, she embraces her role as the Symbol of Life or MsFanservice and even told off the people to stop SlutShaming her when there is a high-stakes battle going on.]]
* HeroWorshipper: She looks up to the Lieutenants of Company 1 and respects her captain immensely for the boundless confidence and powerful image. [[spoiler:This blows up in her face when it's revealed Rekka is a serial killer and he almost beats her to death after revealing his initial plans to make her the FallGuy.]]
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Following the second mission to the Nether where she had to be rescued after barely managing to protect a grievously injured Juggernaut until help arrived, it's revealed that in spite of her crewmen in the Special Fire Force truly believing her to be a valuable ally, Tamaki's opinion of herself is incredibly poor due to a multitude of factors. Her Lucky Lecher Lure caused her to be bullied and to avoid others out of fear it would bother them, she lacked any real motive for undergoing sister training and joining the Fire Force beyond just wanting to do what everyone else did, and she sees herself as TheLoad due to being rescued and getting carried by others on multiple occasions. It takes her reflecting on all of these hang-ups and remembering Shinra's prior urging to respect herself more to snap herself out of this and cement her resolve to be a DamselOutOfDistress.
* IgnoredEnamoredUnderling: It's heavily implied that she's in love with Rekka but he clearly sees her as a little sister and has no idea. [[spoiler:This doesn't stop her from trying to take him down the second she learns he is evil.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:She got suspended and transferred to Company 8 in the aftermath of the incident of Rekka due to unwittingly helping him with his killings, but it was very likely for her protection that she was transferred specifically there and she herself holds herself accountable.]]
* LastNameBasis: Often calls Shinra by his surname, which is odd in-universe as most people are on FirstNameBasis with everyone in their lives.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: The anime's promotional character art proudly showed off her Company 8 insignia before airing, giving away that she would join the group.
* ManOfKryptonite: To Assault. Despite being one of the Knights' strongest members and reputed to be capable of taking on Company 8 and winning just by himself, or even taking down a Demon Infernal on his own, [[spoiler:her Lucky Lecher Lure unfailingly [[ParalyzingFearOfSexuality turns him into a wreck]] and causes him to lose all of their battles. Even after he undergoes TrainingFromHell to specifically prevent himself from getting aroused by her, she still affects him anyway since [[InLoveWithTheMark he likes her]].]] [[spoiler:This also applies to Assault's Doppelganger once Tamaki embraces her role as the Symbol of Life.]]
* MistakenForBadass: While Tamaki is a competent fighter and not necessarily weak, she doesn't have the skill, experience, or raw power that her fellow Company 8 Third-Generation pyrokinetics Shinra and Arthur have, and usually gets outperformed by them in combat against other pyrokinetics. However, her victory over Assault, who is considered incredibly strong by his fellow White Clads members, has made them believe she's [[TheDreaded some unstoppable force of nature of incredible power]], to the point Dragon himself doesn't believe someone like her could be defeated, especially after Assault decides to train more and more to "overcome her power" anytime he challenges her and loses. Of course, the White Clads seems unaware of the circumstances behind Assault's defeat in the Nether, nor that Iris also took part in "the fight". [[spoiler:No longer the case with the real Assault's help, she is able to defeat his Doppelganger.]]
* MsFanservice: Tamaki is known to get into exceptionally {{fanservice}}y situations due to her clumsiness, a problem she termed "Lucky Lecher Lure". [[spoiler:This is part of the revelation that she is the Symbol of Life, via sex appeal and lewdness. In order to defeat Assault's Doppelganger, she embraces her role after having enough of people slut-shaming her and Assault supporting her.]]
* NakedApron: Tamaki is something of a disaster in the kitchen. She at one point puts an apron over her jumpsuit and ([[RuleOfSexy bafflingly]]) ends up losing every shred of clothing except for the apron.
* NiceGirl: Though she can be a little loud, Tamaki is a very nice person at heart. She's friendly, kind-hearted and protective, especially towards her company members and children.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: [[spoiler:After seeing Rekka's true character, she tries to stop him from infernalizing the children by slapping him, then by using her fire powers to signal for help. This only gets Rekka angry and she is shortly brutalized, with Rekka kicking and stomping on her until she's reduced to weakly pleading for help as he prepares to burn her alive for her defiance. Understandably, after Shinra saves her and asks if she's alright, her response is to burst into tears and shake her head.]]
* NunsAreMikos: Despite all her issues and misfortune, Tamaki is a fully qualified nun. Religious qualifications seem to be a requirement for Company 1 members. [[spoiler:She latter embraces this role fully during a major crisis and the journey to China.]]
* PluckyGirl: Even if [[spoiler:her admired superior betrays her, beats her up and then burns off most of her clothing]], she can still pull herself together enough to do her duty as a Fire Soldier and protect nearby civilians.
* {{Pride}}: [[CharacterDevelopment She grows out of it]], but she was originally extremely prideful in her company's superiority and her own strength.
* ReassignedToAntarctica: How she came to join Company 8. She was suspended from the prestigious Company 1 [[spoiler:due to her unknowing assistance with Rekka's scheming]] and was taken in by the much less respected Company 8 in the meantime. It wasn't until after her suspension period ended that she realized she fit in enough there to [[IChooseToStay make a permanent transfer]]. [[spoiler:This was by request of Captain Burns who wanted Tamaki sent to the only Company he could trust to not be compromised by the White-Clad.]]
* RedHerring: [[spoiler:She is made to seem like she is part of the serial killer plot, but she is the FallGuy for the killer.]]
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: She doesn't like her body being exposed as a result of her "Lucky Lecher Lure" and usually has a NakedFreakOut whenever it happens. She has to wear a bikini under a cut-off uniform (necessary, as a result of the way her powers work) and has a habit of accidentally [[SuggestiveCollision tripping chest/crotch/boobs first into people]] and then accusing them of sexual harassment. In what's probably the ultimate example of this, she somehow loses all her clothes by tripping [[spoiler:which proves that she's the real deal in place of a body doubling cultist to Iris]]. However, she doesn't seem to have a problem wearing a bikini top and a open uniform jacket or her trousers with large gaps in the sides. [[spoiler:Her reluctance clashes with her established role as the Symbol of Life.]]
* RunningGag: Her Lucky Lecher Lure. The secondary joke is that the men she works with just stop caring after a while.
* RunningOnAllFours: She tends to run on all fours when her Nekomata ability is active, which is probably meant to further enforce her cat motif.
* ShipTease:
** Mostly with Shinra, who she at first disliked but has gotten closer to. It's to the point where she even screams his name when she's in trouble.
** She and Juggernaut have gotten closer as time has passed. It's unclear if Tamaki sees him in a romantic way, but he's pretty obvious about it. [[spoiler:After Juggernaut confessed in wanting to go out with her on a date, she eventually accepts his proposal following fake Assault's defeat. In the final chapter, after nearly every character is restored back to life, Tamaki and Juggernaut are seen happily strolling together down a street]].
** Even though they're enemies, Assault [[spoiler:realizes that all his training to not be affected by her Lucky Lecher Lure is useless because he [[InLoveWithTheMark likes her]].]] This leads to [[spoiler:him returning to fight his Doppelganger in support of what Tamaki represents and out of his love for her.]]
* TheSixthRanger: At the end of her introduction arc, she transfers to Company 8 on a temporary basis, thus becoming the new first new member after Shinra (and Arthur). [[spoiler:Later on, she chooses to stay permanently.]]
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Justified. Tamaki's flame tails come from her body, so she needs to have gaps in her trousers to use them effectively and avoid ClothingDamage. [[WatsonianVsDoylist For one reason or another]], a later arc has her use her powers while wearing both a long jacket and tights without burning them at all.
* SuperToughness: She has incredibly high fire resistance, so much so that Licht thinks she can survive fire blasts that could kill Shinra and even survive the heat of an underground explosion that could level the central city of the Empire.
* ThrowTheDogABone:
** Her Lucky Lecher Lure doesn't activate at the end of Vulcan's introduction arc, even after Ōbi tempts fate by mentioning that it hasn't. Thus, she is spared further embarrassment and doesn't make a bad first impression on the new guy.
** During the journey to the Chinese Peninsula, her Lucky Lecher Lure is not activated at any point, giving her some break after the Fifth Pillar arc, where she tripped over and lost all her nun clothes (except for her veil) when she was trying to help Vulcan and Hinawa to put to rest the Infernals created by Haumea.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The punk-ish tomboy to Iris' more modest and gentle girly-girl personality.
* TookALevelInBadass: She starts out as the weakest of Company 8's fighters, barely able to hold her own in battle and needing to be saved more often than not. She quickly becomes aware of this and, after the second mission to the Nether, seeks help to rectify it. After training with Company 7 and overcoming the insecurities that had suppressed her powers, she became strong enough to fight on the front lines. She isn't quite on the level of Shinra and Arthur, but with her agility and heat resistance, she is still able to distinguish herself in serious fights.
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:Her admiration towards Rekka blinded her to his true intentions and she unintentionally helped him carry out his killings]].
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Shinra had urged her to respect herself more following her transfer to Company 8 after her low self-esteem is revealed. Benimaru also compliments her following her victory against Hinata and Hikage while training with them and developing her pyrokinesis and self-confidence, saying she had somehow stopped suppressing power that she'd already had and was now better equipped to handle real problems after getting serious in what was meant to just be a game of tag with the twins.

A sister originating from The Holy Sol Temple and a member of the Special Fire Force Company 8. She is in charge of praying for the souls of the Infernals the Fire Force exorcises.
----
* AntiAntiChrist: [[spoiler:She is eventually marked as the Eight and final Pillar necessary to start the end of the world. This only makes her more determined to continue helping her allies oppose the Evangelist and her plans than before.]]
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:It's heavily implied that she had a child with Shinra, given that they became a couple in the final chapter. Whether they married after the time skip remains ambiguous, as she's not seen later.]]
* BadLiar: She clearly doesn't have much experience in deception because Shinra can see right through her.
* BarrierWarrior: [[spoiler:After being selected as the Eight Pillar, she gains the power to create barriers of fire and uses them to protect her allies.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: While Iris is a total sweetheart and a very kind soul, she can be brutal given the chance (mostly PlayedForLaughs). The best example of this is during the battle with Assault, where she sneaks behind him and mercilessly beats him with an iron pipe until he falls unconscious.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Is very attractive, and Ohkubo thinks her chest size is so important that her small blurb in the character pages at the start of every volume stresses how huge her breasts are.
* CatchPhrase: She says the Sol Temple's sacred word "látom" more often than anyone else, and in secular situations as well as sacred ones.
* ChasteHero: Being a nun and all, she's not interested in romance or sex. [[spoiler:Subverted later when she becomes Shinra's girlfriend. And maybe married him.]]
* CombatPragmatist: Shockingly for a good natured nun, she's more than willing to get her hands dirty if necessary. She'll beat an assassin senseless with a pipe if he lets his guard down.
* ADayInTheLimelight: She gets a mini-arc devoted to her [[spoiler:CrisisOfFaith]] when she and Shinra visiting a Church.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: As a child, Iris witnessed the deaths of their fellow nuns when the convent she was raised in burned down. She then had Hibana, the only other survivor and closest thing she had to family left, leave her and grow increasingly cold and eventually hateful of her several years later. The trauma and loneliness still weigh on her despite her usual [[StepfordSmiler cheerful facade]].
* EveryonesBabySister: Company 8 is highly protective of her and very concerned about her happiness. Anyone bringing harm to her earns the rage of the entire crew.
* TheFace: After an "exorcism", Iris is the one to inform the public that souls have been laid to rest.
* {{Foil}}: To Hibana. They survived the same tragedy. While Hibana is completely broken by it and driven to cynicism, Iris is still able to believe in goodness.
* GoodShepherd: She's a nun from the Holy Sol Temple. It's her job to pray for the souls of Infernals so they can rest in peace.
* GratuitousJapanese: Latin American Spanish dub only: For some unexplained reason, besides the fact the series takes place in Japan, she use Japanese honorifics in her speech. For making the things even more bizarre, she is the ''only'' character in the Latin Spanish dub who does this, and more ironically, Iris isn't even of Japanese origin to begin with, while the rest of the Japanese cast in that dub doesn't use honorifics at all.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She's blonde and is the gentlest person of the Company.
* TheHeart: Defined by her unshakable kindness to others.
* HonoraryPrincess: Arthur considered her a princess as soon as he met her, and she is the "younger sister" of Princess Hibana, so it works well enough for his delusion.
* IdenticalStranger: She bares a striking resemblance to a woman who appears in Shinra's dreams. [[spoiler:Hitohashira Me's SlasherSmile is the big difference between the two.]] In Chapter 200, there's a reason for that: [[spoiler:she's the doppelgänger of Amaterasu.]]
* InnocentBlueEyes: Again, they highlight her kindness.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Iris sometimes has remarks that cut people to the bone, such as comforting Maki by telling her she is wonderful and beautiful 90% of the time but that the other 10% is a problem. It's not clear if this is [[DeadpanSnarker snark]] or if Iris genuinely doesn't notice the insensitivity.
* MadeOfGood: [[spoiler:She was created from the public's perception of Amaterasu as a sustaining, nurturing force. She is effectively a living embodiment of selfless benevolence.]]
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler:Shinra is confirmed to have a child after the timeskip but its not made clear who the mother is. It's heavily implied to be her since they were dating in the final chapter BEFORE the timeskip but whether they married remains to be seen.]]
* TheMedic: Iris has some knowledge of first aid, to the point she can treat a gunshot wound.
* MoralityPet: She's one to Princess Hibana after her HeelFaceTurn. As her "little sister", Iris is one of very few people Hibana is unconditionally considerate and protective of and able to get her to [[MoralityChain tone down her worst impulses]].
* NiceGirl: Iris is a very kind and caring person.
* NunsAreMikos: The setting has a religion surrounding a Fire God of Creation, the Holy Sol Temple invokes clear cut Catholic Church aesthetics in its character and location designs, but Iris can be seen performing purification rites such as washing one's body in meditation and prayers straight out of Shinto beliefs.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:With Hibana having recused herself from the race since she claims she's just a fangirl and Tamaki dating Juggernaut, Iris ends up "winning" by default when its confirmed that she's dating Shinra in the final chapter. It's implied that she marries Shinra by the epilogue and has a child with him. How much [[DatingCatwoman Inca]] intrudes on their relationship is [[DidTheyOrDidntThey never explained]].]]
* OnlyOneName: As an orphan without a family, Iris doesn't have a surname.
* TheReveal:
** In Chapter 200, [[spoiler:it's revealed she's the Eighth and Final Pillar along with being the doppelgänger of Amaterasu.]]
** In Chapter 219, [[spoiler:it's revealed to Shinra she's developed pyrokinetic abilities.]]
* ShamefulStrip: She ends up getting her clothes burned off by Hibana for daring to wear a nun habit in front of her. Despite this, Hibana gives Iris a jacket to cover up with.
* ShipperOnDeck: Iris reveals herself to be this for Shinra x Tamaki and Obi x Hibana. [[spoiler:She ends up dating Shinra herself.]]
* StepfordSmiler: She puts on a clearly strained smile during her [[spoiler:CrisisOfFaith]] so the rest of the 8th wouldn't worry about her, but Shinra notices rather quickly.
* TeamPet: Hibana accuses her and all religious specialists in the Fire Force of being nothing more than adorable mascots; "window dressing" to make the act of killing Inferals look noble.
* TokenHeroicOrc: [[spoiler:Up to and after the revelation of Adolla dopplegängers, most of them have been negative, horrible, or just plain demonic because that's what people think of such individuals. Iris, on the other hand, is the sweetest person around because she is a manifestation of nothing but ''positive'' perceptions of Amaterasu's role in keeping humanity alive, making her the extraordinarily rare dopplegänger that breaks conventions. She is also the first dopplegänger to be ''born'' with its own human body instead of possessing one or appearing as an Infernal trying to kill the original.]]
* WhatDoesThisButtonDo: She can't resist pushing the buttons scattered around an eccentric genius' home. She even taps on some of Licht's more bizarre research items in his lab.

Originally a scientist for Haijima Industries and an expert of incendiary research, Licht joins Company 8 to get into the action. While strange, weird and difficult to like, Licht is invaluable due to his wide range of knowledge, calm observations, and investigation skills.
----
* AmbiguouslyEvil: He supports a wanted man and helps in his crimes, but jokes about being an ally of justice regularly.
* BecomingTheMask: He eventually comes to bond with the rest of Company 8 in a way that surprises even him.
* BlackSheep: The only member of Company 8 who was forced onto the team by an outside group.
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves the day during his introductory arc.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Licht is creepy, eccentric and utterly brilliant.
* DeadpanSnarker: He has his moments, like reminding everyone he is the uninvited guest of Company 8. His Character Profile is both extremely pedantic and incredibly vague as if he is trying to annoy whoever is reading it while also telling them nothing.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: The amount of internal monologue he has had since his introduction rivals Shinra's.
* DramaticIrony: While the readers/viewers are painfully aware that Licht is Joker's accomplice "The Chemist", Company 8 is only suspicious of him due to being transferred by Haijima, and is completely in the dark about his partnership with Joker. They instead think he's just TheMole for Haijima.
* EmptyEyes: In a series notable for bizarre pupils, Licht is notable for having no pupils whatsoever, making his dark green eyes seem more unsettling.
* EvilGenius: A master of chemistry and explosives, so much so he was made the head of Incendiary Research for a major corporation.
* ForGreatJustice: He tells Joker that's all he wants with his typical grin.
* ForScience: The possibility that Shinra could cause a black hole that would swallow the entire Tokyo Empire has him giddy because he would have a front row seat to watch something so interesting take place! By his own admission, overwhelming curiosity drives him.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: He rigs up a secret passage so Joker can get in and out of the Rookie Tournament. The building was constructed by Hajima Industries, so it's natural a high-ranking employee would be able to find weaknesses in the design.
* GeekPhysique: He definitely looks like the kind of guy who spends all day hunched over a microscope. Licht's thin, near waifish figure contrasts that of his male 8th Company colleagues (and Maki) who are all highly toned at the very least, running the gambit from some form of {{hunk}} all the way to HeroicBuild in the case of Captain Ōbi.
* InformationWantsToBeFree: He really wants to uncover the truth and is more reckless than most.
* {{Irony}}: He hides more secrets than should be possible, but believes truth and transparency are vital to the world.
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: He wears a lab coat over casual clothes. He also claims that he wears it underneath his Fire Force uniform.
* ManipulativeBastard: He and Joker get along very well to achieve whatever their goal is. Sometimes with careful planning, other times by just going wild and making quick and risky decisions.
* MakeItLookLikeAnAccident: He runs this risk. When Licht's employers realize he will stop following orders soon, they plan on having him killed. [[MookFaceTurn Literally the first thing Licht does after this is becoming a turncoat]].
* TheMole: Almost everyone is worried that Licht is a spy working for Haijima. He is, but has no loyalty to the corporation. He even openly lies to them if he has to. His true loyalty is to Joker, who he is feeding information to.
* MrExposition: As a scientific genius with a wide variety of knowledge, Licht often has to explain the nature of things. This is often expositing the current and historical state of the world.
* MysteriousBacker: While Joker is running around becoming a publicly recognized criminal, Licht stays quiet and out of sight before eventually joining Company 8. The pair use this to their advantage to work him into places Joker could never go. Because nobody knows Joker is anything more than a random arsonist, they can't even begin to suspect he has a secret accomplice feeding him information.
* NonActionGuy: Licht can't fight and he lacks much muscle. When the time comes though, he sides with Shinra by decking a guy and helping him escape from Kurono to save a child. Because even Licht has some pride.
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: Clarifies that he's on whatever side will reveal the truth. That said, he's got some standards, and he hints that he's BecomingTheMask from his time spent with the 8th.
* NotThatKindOfDoctor:
** Licht is a genius researcher and theorist in many ways, but he is not an engineer.
** He's not a medic. He can apply basic medicine in the field but he's not a surgeon.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He's still regarded as a genius, but Licht still knows a lot more than he lets on.
* ObviouslyEvil: Again, everyone thinks Licht is up to no good. They just don't know why or what. This is thrown into question because he's always helpful. When he tells Company 8 he's meant to be a mole for Haijima, only Iris is shocked. They are a little more shocked by his standing order being to spy on Shinra.
* OhCrap: When watching the battle between Shinra and Shō, he already has trouble keeping up with it all as the fight reaches SuperSpeed levels. Then he notices the steam rising off of the enemy, and realizes that Shō is using super heated thermal expansion on the reality around them to accelerate his own time compared to everyone else, even comparing it to the heat expansion of a ''universe''. Licht consequently starts freaking out big time and urging Shinra to get the hell out of there.
* OnlyFriend: Despite Joker believing he has nothing, Licht respects his efforts and refuses to let him take all the risks. He places himself in grave danger just to help his partner.
* RunningGag: Nobody trusts him. All of Company 8's allies mention this in private or tell it to Licht's face, normally by threatening him.
* SlasherSmile: Puts Shinra to shame in this area. It comes across as incredibly snake-like given how thin it is.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: "Victor" in the fan translation, "Viktor" in the official translation.
* TheStrategist: When confronted by a giant crisis, Licht is the one to mastermind a solution using all the powers available to him.
* UnreliableExpositor: He doesn't know everything and doesn't share everything he does know. Thankfully, the audience get at least some type of understanding of things through his inner monologue while the cast remains in the dark.
* VillainProtagonist: While he ''is'' part of Company 8 and even gets inner monologues, he still willingly supports Joker behind the scenes.
* VillainsOutShopping: He and Joker are shown bantering about menial things on occasion. Like traveling abroad.
* WalkingSpoiler: Any of the details about him are hidden for quite a while and become extremely important later in the series.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: When this becomes a problem, Licht doesn't let it bother him and focuses on doing as much good as he can.

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TakuYashiro (Japanese), Creator/JasonLiebrecht (English), Creator/CarloVazquez (Latin American Spanish)

A genius engineer with unparalleled skill. Vulcan's family has major historical importance to the Tokyo Empire as well as a sorted past with the Fire Force and Haijima. He makes up for his lack of powers with his sheer genius. While everyone else is hoping to fix the Infernal crisis, Vulcan is a FriendToAllLivingThings with dreams of finding ways of fixing the damage done to the world so animals of all types can live safely.
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: You might be smart. You might be an inventor of national fame. Vulcan is always better than you.
* BadassNormal: He'll fend for himself against Infernals and pyrotechnics if he has to.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Will take something apart like he's playing the drums, put it back together and try to smash it to pieces to see if it's unbreakable. Couple his extreme methods with a bizarre sense of design and Vulcan will make something that looks absurd but thousands of times more useful than anything else.
* CollapsibleHelmet: His penguin-inspired helmet is coming out of his firefighter uniform. It is also equipped with propellers allowing him to make [[UseYourHead ramming attacks]].
* CoolMask: It's basically a goat skull with goggle lenses.
* EnemyMine: He originally has no plan to stay with the Fire Force, but stayed because it was either working together or die horribly. He quickly ended up bonding with the rest of Company 8, but is still wary of the rest of the organization.
** He enters much more hostile partnership with Haijima Industries later. He still deeply hates them for their crimes against humanity and his ancestors specifically, but is willing to use their resources in hopes of eventually creating an energy source that would render Amaterasu unnecessary.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Introduced with a machine designed solely to throw his trash at people bothering him with job offers and letting Shinra's group know he does not care what they think about him. He even gives them insults they can use against him if they want.
* FaceOfAThug: He looks pretty damn intimidating and punk-ish at first glance. It doesn't take long for his cuter qualities to overshadow his previously intimidating image. He loves animals, loves to play the drums, and has a smile like the sun.
* FamilyOfChoice: After his father and grandfather died, Vulcan set up a new family with friends he protected.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: He loves animals and his goal is to make robot versions of all the animals that went extinct or create a power source capable of preserving all life. Even when reduced to abject poverty, he still feeds the birds and stray cats around his workshop.
* GadgeteerGenius: Everyone wants his support because his inventions are so advanced. His scientific knowledge seems to be about a hundred years ahead of everyone else.
* GenreSavvy: Vulcan begins exploiting Arthur's utter lunacy by playing into his fantasy. Recognising they need Arthur to be at his absolute strongest and playing into genre drops of fantasy and game logic to trick the boy into making a break through. This does count on Arthur being both stupid enough to fall for Vulcan's lies and Vulcan being able to keep up with Arthur's runaway imagination. The latter is much harder than the former.
* HotMenAtWork: He's an engineer and lives in a junkyard. As if to fully capitalize on that loaded premise, he's introduced shirtless, jacked, and tattooed and tinkering with his inventions inbetween playing the drums.
* {{Hunk}}: Vulcan is an attractive, muscular young man with a sculpted body accented with tattoos. It doesn't hurt that he's often shirtless, showing off his abs and chest nor that he has a very handsome face.
* InsufferableGenius:
** He is obsessed with testing the strength and durability of his inventions. Meaning that he will smash a perfectly good device by throwing it across the room to make something stronger.
** He basically vandalizes everything in Company 8's base to fit his rock-and-roll animal-loving style.
* InTheBlood: He comes from a long line of hyper-talented inventors.
* ItMayHelpYouOnYourQuest: He gives Arthur a ring, a (mostly) normal ring and tells him to put it on when all hope is lost. Vulcan has absolutely no idea what or if this will do because it shouldn't be capable of anything. But he figures that Arthur will find a use for it.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He is a massive pain to deal with, but Vulcan is a good guy underneath it all.
* ManlyTears: Vulcan is able to keep it together during a crisis but after [[spoiler:Giovanni steals Yu's body and the cataclysm begins partly due to his own failure]] all it takes is some gentle prompting before he starts letting out.
* MeaningfulName: He is named after the Roman god of the Forge, and is every bit as skilled as that implies.
* MissingMom: We know what happened to his father and his grandfather but not his mother or grandmother.
* OddFriendship: Becomes Arthur's closest friend and confidant, baring Shinra. They don't have anything in common but Vulcan admires Arthur's unbreakable drive and Arthur respects Vulcan's creativity, insight and level-head.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: Is placed under amazing pressure to swallow his pride and join Hajima. He doesn't bend.
* ThePromise: Vulcan promised to his grandfather he would never help the Fire Force after what they did to his family. [[spoiler:By the end of his introduction, he has to break this oath to protect his new family.]]
* ScienceHero: More of a fighter than Licht as he is able to handle a combat situation through quick thinking and the occasional gadget.
* SingleTargetSexuality: He never expresses any interest in any woman besides Lisa.
* TeenGenius: Amazingly intelligent before he's fully grown, and it's implied his only education is from his (just as brilliant if not more) talented father and grandfather.
* TrueCompanions: Vulcan believes that nothing can break the bonds between people who love each other and will fight to prove it.
* WouldNotHitAGirl: He wouldn't throw a drink can at Iris' head unlike how he "greeted" Shinra and Arthur. That's his standard of politeness.

An orphaned girl who lived in Vulcan's workshop, she is revealed to ultimately be a Knight of the Ashen Flames sent to spy on Vulcan and find the key to Amaterasu. After outing herself, Vulcan refuses to believe she was truly evil and vows to save her. With help from Ōbi, he succeeds, and with an ImportantHairCut, Lisa leaves the Knights of the Ashen Flames and joins Company 8 as one of its engineers.
----
* AntiVillain: Her brief time as a villain made it clear she wasn't truly evil, but rather a BrokenBird desperate to NeverBeHurtAgain and being mentally abused by Giovanni. Once Vulcan manages to get through to her and Giovanni abandons her, she leaves this position and becomes a full-fledged hero.
* BecomingTheMask: She was only sent to infiltrate Vulcan's workshop so as find the key to Amaterasu, but she developed a legitimate bond with Vulcan and Yu in the process. While she did ultimately betray them when Giovanni ordered her too, it was clear she only did so out of her devotion to Giovanni, and once Vulcan made clear he wouldn't abandon her and Giovanni tossed her aside, she gladly returned to them and joined up with Company 8.
* BrokenBird: She was brought up and abused by Doctor Giovanni from a young age to mold her into a tool for the White-Clad. Even after being discarded by the Doctor and joining Company 8, the trauma he inflicted on her is so deep that just thinking about him can give her a panic attack.
* CombatTentacles: Both as "Feeler" and as a member of Company 8, Lisa uses her Third Generation abilities to generate tentacles. These tentacles possess magnetic properties, and when manifested from her waist give her the appearance of an octopus.
* HeelFaceTurn: After Vulcan makes clear he won't abandon her and Giovanni tosses her aside, she joins Company 8 as an engineer working alongside Vulcan, finding them to be her FamilyOfChoice.
* ImportantHairCut: She spots a shorter style after Giovanni tosses her aside and she joins Company 8.
* TheMole: She was ordered by the Knights, more specifically Giovanni, to infiltrate Vulcan's workshop in hopes of finding the key to Amaterasu.
* RunningGag: Shinra confusing her for some type of robot.
* TeamMom: For Vulcan's new family.
* TraumaticHaircut: When Giovanni takes her hostage, he binds her neck with a wire that he heats up, threatening to burn through her neck. Her lower hairline is also caught by the super heated wiring, causing it to be sheered off.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's hard to talk about her without revealing she was initially TheMole.
* WillNotBeAVictim: She wrapped herself in flames and her cult's beliefs out of fear of dying like her parents. It took Vulcan fighting to save her to finally break free from this mindset.
