A small school ship docked at Ōarai, Ibaraki Prefecture, with no real claim to fame, this is its first time participating in the High School National Sensha-do Tournament, which is immediately following its Sensha-do class's revival after over twenty years of inactivity. Compared to the other schools, their selection of tanks show no unified theme -- because they hardly have the time or money to select their tanks, Ōarai has to make do with an assortment of surplus tanks.[[note]]After their Sensha-do Club was disbanded 20 years ago, they tried to sell all their tanks. The tanks that remained were not of the best quality.[[/note]] All of the main characters are students from the school and members of it's Sensha-dō team while being divided into teams with their own respective tanks.

[[folder:Tropes for the Ensemble]]
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: St. Gloriana and Jatkosota were the only schools Oarai can't beat. In the former's case, it's because of Oarai lacking experience in Sensha-do. And as for the latter's case, it's because their FragileSpeedster tactics has proven too much for Oarai to handle.
* AnimalThemeNaming: All the tank teams' names are animals of some sort.
* CombatPragmatist: Under Miho's leadership, Ōarai is not above using ConfusionFu and CrazyEnoughToWork tactics to win. That being said, doing these kind of tactics require [[TrueCompanions teamwork]] and [[BattleOfWits wits]] to work.
* CompanionCube: Ōarai's tanks are almost treated like characters. While they are inanimate and perform [[AvertedTrope no]] [[AnimateInanimateObject actions]] of their own, some tropes are prominently used in their portrayal, as opposed to the opposing tanks (which get a much less detailed portrayal, with ONE very notorious exception).
** In the movie, [[spoiler:"Ferris Wheel-senpai"]] gets the CompanionCube treatment by Rabbit Team first, then by [[InfectiousInsanity everyone else]]
* ConfusionFu: Their style is described as mostly going against standard tank unit formations and strategies. This gives them a big advantage over the other schools' Sensha-do clubs due to their unpredictability.
* DavidVersusGoliath: Their opponents always have the advantage of numbers, equipment, and experience. In the movie, Miho even lampshades this the night before their 8vs30 match with the University Team. [[spoiler: This is averted when the rival school teams [[BigDamnHeroes join up with them to make the numbers]] in defense of Ōarai's school.]]
* TheDreaded: As shown in the spinoffs, the teams from Ooarai have become objects of awe (and terror) to students of other minor school ships, due to their performance in the recent year's high school Senshado championship, as well as their underdog victory against the all-star University Team. Indeed, every time Ooarai is ''mentioned'' in a spinoff, they're usually framed in a way reminiscent of the FinalBoss in any other series, down to dramatic shading and shaded eyes.
* ImpossibleTask: Their match with the University Team was so stacked against them that even Miho thinks they have no chance of winning. To elaborate, they are to face the combined team of the best sensha-do practitioners in the University level. They have to face 30 tanks. Finally, they have to face them in an Annihilation Match, meaning to win, they would have to eliminate ''every single enemy tank''.
* {{Irony}}: The underdog team from a nobody school no one expected to win becomes ''the'' most feared group of tankers in the high school Senshado circuit.
* LineOfSightName: The team names are a reference to their tanks' appearance/characteristic or to [[NoodleIncident something happening with / to them]]:
** Anglerfish Team was forced to do the eponymous dance.
** Duck team's Type-89 looks like a duck from the side.
** Rabbit team's [=M3=] was found in a rabbit pen.
** Turtle team's 38(t) looked like a gray turtle. Being upgraded into a Hetzer made the resemblance even more prominent.
** Hippo team's [=StuG=] is a squat tank that was found in a pond.
** Mallard team's [=B1=] looks like a ''large'' duck as well.
** Leopon team's Porsche Tiger is a hybrid.
** Anteater team's tank has that squiggly antenna poking out the top that kind of looks like an anteater's tongue (reinforced with the rhythmic gymnastics ribbon on its tank emblem).
* MultinationalTeam: Tank version -- unlike the other schools, Ōarai has no single class of tanks, instead relying on an assortment of tanks from different countries (Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan and USA). In the movie [[spoiler: they are joined by 4 German tanks, 3 American Shermans, 3 British tanks, 4 Russian tanks, an Italian tankette, a Finnish assault gun, and 6 Japanese tanks.]]
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits:
** All of the members of the Oarai Sensha-do club, with the exception of Miho, have no Sensha-do experience and have quirks in one form of another[[note]] The initial members of the New Ooarai Sensha-do Club are as follows; Miho and her friends, a group of history buffs, first year movie buffs, the ex-volleyball team, and the student council. They are later joined by the Disciplinary committee, the automotive club, and a group of online gamers.[[/note]]
** In the movie, their ragtag band becomes bigger when [[spoiler: members of the other rival schools temporarily ally themselves with the main cast. So now they have the [[IAmVeryBritish very British ladies of St. Gloriana]], [[{{EagleLand}} the very American ladies of Saunders]], [[GloriousMotherRussia the very Russian Pravda girls,]] and [[GermanicDepressives the serious girls of Kuromorimine]]. In addition, there's [[LeeroyJenkins the charge-happy]] [[NoIndoorVoice and loud Chi-Ha-Tan girls]], and [[MysteriousWaif the low profile Continuation High girls]]. Oh yeah, [[ButtMonkey the Anzio trio are there too.]]]]
** Their tank lineup is also this. All other schools tend to field duplicates of at least one type of tank, and often field them for specific roles. Oarai, on the other hand, doesn't even have enough tanks to hit the maximum for matches, to say nothing of the fact that their tanks are from all over the place. This has led to them finding several creative uses for the tanks they do have access to.
* SailorFuku: The school's default uniform both in school and in their Sensha-do uniforms. After all, they ''are'' sailors.
* TheTeam: In a variation, Ōarai's ''tank teams'' behave as a team by proxy, because of the ways they behave as units in battle. Starting at Episode 5, the girls start referring to them not as "teams" but as though they were people (e.g., "Rabbit-san" as opposed to "Team Rabbit"), complete with UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics.
* TookALevelInBadass: Again, with the sole exception of Miho who simply regained her badass creds, the members of the Sensha-do club started out as rookies who couldn't drive or fire straight and became a formidable tank unit.
* TrueCompanions: The Ōarai girls form a large one, and each individual team is a smaller fellowship within the larger one. Outside of Anglerfish Team, they're bound together by common interests (history, volleyball etc). This is [[LampshadeHanging commented upon]] by their rivals. Some [[VillainRespect in a positive light]], others, [[EvilCannotComprehendGood not so much]].
** Miho sucks at [[RousingSpeech Rousing Speeches]], but the first time she manages to nail one is [[spoiler: when they learn that, unless they win the tournament, the school will be closed and the girls will likely be split up]], with these simple words: "I want to keep doing Sensha-do. With all of you". Cue all the team springing into action.
** Episode 10, a breather which centers on their preparations for the FinalBattle, devotes little screen time to the [[MidSeasonUpgrade new tanks and gear]]: what's shown instead is Miho's second RousingSpeech (a heartfelt declaration to the entire team of her intention to [[TeamSpirit do her best for them]]), and how each individual team [[ThePowerOfFriendship spends the night before the battle bonding]].
* UnderdogsNeverLose: Played straight for the most part. Oarai Academy is a nearly broken school with really old and abandoned tank club that is freshly restored with a bunch of inexperienced crews (with exception of Miho, who was previously from Kuromorimine's Sensha-do team), in the setting where everybody else treats the sport as Serious Business. At the start, all they had were 5 tanks, very few recruits, and a strategist who's considered an outcast of the elite. True to the trope, they beat every other major team, no matter how overwhelming them are, at the very last seconds due to the their ability to act quicker in Double Knockout situations. The only exceptions were their loss in the practice match against St. Gloriana, their win against Anzio (as elaborated during the Seventh OVA) [[labelnote:Explanation]]While they were outnumbered 2 to 1 much like their match against Saunders University, almost half of Anzio's lineup were Tankettes, and it ended in a near-CurbStompBattle in Ōarai's favor; they only lost the [=StuG=] III when it dueled Carpaccio's Semovente[[/labelnote]], their loss in the second match of the Commemorative Cup against Jatkosota during the events of ''Little Army 2'', and their loss during their team-up with Chi-Ha-Tan in the rematch against St. Gloriana and Pravda at the beginning of ''Der Film''.
* WeakButSkilled: They don't have the massive numbers and firepower compared to other schools and their tanks have maintenance issues that need to be tended to often due to years of neglect. They are really excellent performers in spite of the issues.
* TheWorfEffect: Despite being the champions of the 63rd Sensha-do Tournament, they were bested by Jatkosota in ''Little Army 2'' just to show how skilled their opponents are.
* WorfHadTheFlu: At the beginning of ''Der Film'', Chi-Ha-Tan's [[LeeroyJenkins recklessness]] costed both teams the match against St. Gloriana and Pravda.

Collectively, they serve as TheSixthRanger, joining Sensha-do right before the match.
----
[[folder:In General]]
* BreakTheHaughty: In the movie [[spoiler:after the closing of the school]]
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals:
** All three of them. [[OnlySixFaces Art style aside]], they share the same short black hair and voice actress. This may be justified. Being part of the Disciplinary Committee, they have to stand as an example of cohesion for the rest of the student body, hence the similar hairdos.
** Lampshaded in the sixth OVA, where in a "Hidden Talent Contest" they perform a multiplication trick which consists of Gomoyo and Pazomi stepping out from behind Sodoko.
** In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'', it is revealed that there are more than 100 members on the Disciplinary Committee, who ''all'' look like Sodoko with slight variations (for example, one has a BlushSticker, another has EyesAlwaysShut and so forth).
-->'''Mako''': ''"Seeing Sodoko gathered like this feels bad."''
* NotSoAboveItAll: In the movie [[spoiler:they give up trying to uphold public morals after the school is closed. They quickly become lazy and take on a [[JapaneseDelinquents delinquent attitude]]]].
* SelfDeprecation: In the 6th OVA, they make fun of the fact that they all look alike.
* TheSixthRanger: They join the Sensha-do Team in time for the Pravda fight.
* SchoolSwimsuit: The three of them wear theirs in ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', and Sodoko, being a stickler for the rules, believes the other girls should do the same.
* ThemeNaming: After ''Film/SaloOrThe120DaysOfSodom'', itself a reference to Sodom and Gomorrah, directly or indirectly, chosen for intentional {{Irony}}.
** In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'', it is revealed that this extends to other Committee members, at least two of whose names are puns for Sadism and Masochism.

* StoneWall: The tank's thick armor, and how it was historically [[NoSell durable enough to continue functioning despite multiple hits over long battles]], is often mentioned (even openly discussed in Episode 10.5) and the tank is portrayed as such, [[ArtisticLicense even if that only would apply against the smaller weapons of early-war designs]]. 106
The head of the Morals and Discipline Committee, as well as Mallard Team's tank commander, radio operator, and one its of two gunners and loaders.
----
* BerserkButton: Has a few pet peeves -- rule-breakers, arrogant people, or being called "Sodoko" (though her friends on the disciplinary committee may be an exception - see below under InSeriesNickname).
* ButtMonkey: She's never taken seriously by the rest of the student body, which gets on her nerves.
* CharacterDevelopment: [[spoiler: The threat of Oarai's dissolution in the movie and the temporary spiral of the Morals Committee into delinquency causes her to state that rules are meant to be broken when one of her teammates expresses doubt over a risky maneuver.]]
* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: When Mako climbs into their tank to help TheTeam get up a hill in the match with Pravda, she complains about her getting into another team's tank without asking.
* DeathGlare: In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', she gives one to Miho when she [[WhatTheHellHero complains about the harshness of the new rules]], and then forces her to dye her hair.
* DespairEventHorizon: She took [[spoiler:her school closure and sale as scrap]] ''quite'' worse than most of the other girls. She was helped out by [[HopeBringer Anzu's]] good news, but it wasn't enough. It had to be [[SitcomArchnemesis Mako]] who finally [[TrueCompanions brought her back]] - ''both'' metaphorically and literally.
* GungHolierThanThou: Insists that everyone follow the rules and often complains about freshmen wearing makeup or the Hippo Team's costumes. She says that Sensha-do, as an elective, is bound by school rules. No one pays her any mind.
-->''"You know this is a class, right?!'' ''You have to follow the rules!"''
* IGaveMyWord: [[spoiler:At the finale, she deletes all records of Mako's truancy, fulfilling one of the stipulated [[ThePardon benefits]] of joining Sensha-do, as well as a promise she made late in the battle. Cue [[TheGlomp glomp]] from Mako.]]
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: Of the trio, she can be identified by her chin-length hair.
* InSeriesNickname: "Sodoko". Most people call her that; even the very polite Miho refers to her as "Sodoko-[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics san]]" in Episode 10.5.
** A 2015 ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'' 4koma heavily implies that the shorthened nicknames of Morals Committee members might be made and intended for Committee internal usage.
* OhCrap: After noticing that her SchoolSwimsuit has her nickname instead of her last name.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Gomoyo's blue in her short temper concerning rule-breakers.
* SitcomArchnemesis: Versus Mako because of her chronic tardiness.
* TheyCallMeMisterTibbs: Really hates her nickname, especially when it's Mako who is calling her that. Interestingly enough, [[spoiler:after the Char B1 bis gets flipped over by the Maus]], she and the others report in with them. See above under InSeriesNickname for more details.
* TyrantTakesTheHelm: In Chapter 6 of ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', she gets the chance to exercise her authority to the fullest extent and goes mad with power, even cracking down on the girls' hair colors and styles.

* {{Gamer Chick}}s
-->'''Nekota''': ''"If you take online games away from us, what have we left?"''
* GeekPhysiques: Played straight originally, averted in the movie where they spend a significant amount of time doing physical training and end up being in better shape than any other Oarai team.
* {{Hikikomori}}: Piyotan has not been to a pool in ten years, while Momogawa has not been out in the sun in twelve years.
** In the movie. they fear becoming complete [=NEETs=] [[spoiler:after hearing Ooarai might be shut down.]]
* IKnowMortalKombat: Deconstructed. They quickly find out that driving real tanks is not the same as driving virtual tanks.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Are able to effortlessly lift tank shells like paper but still have a lithe body type.
* NerdsAreSexy: All of them wear their uniforms in ways that show a bit more skin, likely trying to invoke this trope.
* NonUniformUniform: All three are missing the green piece that goes under the sailor blouse.
* ThemeNaming: After "cute" animals -- kitten (Nekota), squirrel (Momogawa) and chick (Piyotan).
* TookALevelInBadass: Big time in the movie after [[spoiler:Finally taking out their first tank in the friendly match and then working out to become the physically strongest girls in Ōarai, so much so they can lob heavy tank shells one handed, catch the shells in the same manner, followed by slamming them into the gun barrel with enough force to close the breech, and [[NiceJobBreakingItHero break the driving lever for their tank from sheer force]]]].

* RedShirt: [[spoiler: They are quickly taken out to show how dangerous Kuromorimine can be.]]
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler: Its only contribution to the final tournament battle is taking a hit for the flag tank.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: In the movie, they start to train physically, which positively affected their effectiveness in both video game and actual tank battles. In the ''Alice War'' [=OVA=] they states that they average about 2 tank kills in practice matches ever since their training.

* EffortlessAmazonianLift: In the movie [[spoiler:becomes strong enough to effortlessly lob tank shells]]

* HoldingOutForAHero: Specifically defies it, as she offers to [[EleventhHourRanger join the team to help them any way she could]], even before knowing if there was a tank available.
* HugeSchoolgirl: Stands 168cm, though she's conscious about it, so she tends to lean forward a bit to reduce her profile.
* InSeriesNickname: She refers to herself as Nekonyaa when talking to her [[TrueCompanions online gamer friends]] and to herself.
* MeaningfulAppearance: Wears a cat-ear hairband as a reflection of the "Neko" in her name.
* OpaqueNerdGlasses: All the time, even at school. As shown by the opening animation, it's likely to hide the fact that she looks like a character straight out of a Creator/LeijiMatsumoto series.
* ShrinkingViolet:
** She walks up to Miho and makes her request to join the team with a quavering voice and fidgeting fingers, indicating that she's fairly nervous.
** She also attempts to approach Miho in the hall during OVA 7 (chronologically earlier) but is unable to speak at all.

They are first mentioned in Episode 2 and seen in Episode 8. They drive the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VK4501 Porsche Tiger aka Tiger(P)]], a German tank [[DifficultButAwesome notorious for its cantankerous engine and transmission, yet packs a heavy punch and is also durable]], [[EleventhHourRanger for the Finals match]].

* CoolCar: Revealed to own one in the movie, based of the Toyota Soarer, complete with racing bucket.
* MissFixIt: All four of them are skilled at fixing broken tanks. [[spoiler: They can fix the Porsche Tiger ''while it's in motion!'']]
* OtherStockPhrases: [[spoiler: A tank-version of "Over My Dead Body". They use the wreckage of their tank to bar the path to where the Nishizumi sisters are locked into their final showdown.]]

* PatchworkKids: Their namesake animal is a hybrid of a male leopard and a lioness.
* StealthPun: And just like the leopon, the Porsche Tiger is itself a hybrid.[[note]]It had petrol engines at the back, assisted with two electric motors up front.[[/note]]
* SuddenNameChange: Two of them had their names switched when introduced in Episode 10.5 from what they had been named in the [[AllThereInTheManual official website]]. [[note]](due to they being also having their crew roles switched, while they were shown in Episode 11 to keep their long-standing crew roles)[[/note]] it was a mistake. [[note]]It was fixed in the [=BDs=].[[/note]]
* ThemeNaming: Named after Japanese race car drivers.
* WrenchWench: All four of them are girls in the automotive club.

* TheAllegedCar: The Tiger(P) might have the best gun and thickest armor out of Ōarai's tanks, but it is horribly prone to mechanical failures. In rapid succession, it gets stuck in mud, overheats, and ''catches fire''. The Automobile Club's [[SeenItAll reaction]] says it all.
* AwesomeButImpractical: In RealLife, the tank was found to be ridden with too many mechanical defects to be used in battle. Contrast with DifficultButAwesome below.
* TheBigGuy: [[spoiler:During the finals, its sheer size and thickness blocks the rest of Kuromorimine, thus allowing Miho to settle the score one-on-one with Maho.]]
* CompanionCube: The reason it's given an entry in the ''characters'' page.
-->'''Nakajima:''' (While [[MissFixIt fixing the engine on the move]]) ''"There, there. You'll feel better soon."''
* DifficultButAwesome: The reasons outlined in AwesomeButImpractical above made the Leopon girls the obvious choice to crew it.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Downplayed, as it doesn't involve actual superpowers but rather, "tech level above what was available in the 1940's" (the setting's closest thing). The Tiger(p) is badass enough ''per se'', yet a bit of LoopholeABuse from Leopon Team gives it an one-time tech boost in the Movie.[[note]]to elaborate, [[AllThereInTheManual Senshado rules]] are ''very'' strict on the "only 1940's tech" rule, with ''two'' exceptions. One the mandatory modern radios and judging devices. The other is, for safety, the replacement of electrical systems with modern ones, up to current standards. Whoever wrote that rule forgot to mention the exactly two one-of-a-kind prototype German tanks that were built with hybrid petrol-''electric'' engines. See ExplosiveOverclocking below.[[/note]]
* ExplosiveOverclocking: [[spoiler:The Tiger (P)'s electric motors were boosted to their maximum in TheMovie, to allow Katyusha's [=T-34-85=] and Erika's Tiger II to slipstream and catch up with the faster Pershings. This came at the cost of wrecking the drivetrain, and therefore putting them out of the match.]]
* LightningBruiser: '''''If''''' the girls manage to get it to work in battle, the Tiger(P) is much better armed and armored than any other Ōarai tank, while being just as fast.
* LoopholeAbuse: [[spoiler:TheMovie revealed that while they were precluded by [[AllThereInTheManual existing Sensha-Do regulations]] from modifying the main engine, it did not prohibit them from boosting the Tiger (P)'s electric motors. Which they did.]]
* MidSeasonUpgrade: In the movie [[spoiler:shown to have been upgraded by the automotive club to allow the tank to reach ludicrously high speeds, [[ExplosiveOverclocking at the cost of wrecking it]]]].
* PracticalJoke: [[spoiler: The tank first appears fully assembled in a small room deep in the school ship's bowels accessible only through man-sized passageways, and it's mentioned in Episode 10 that it had to be disassembled and reassembled to get it out, meaning it ''also'' must had been disassembled and reassembled to get it ''inside'' the room - which heavily implies the poor tank was the subject of a classic "assemble a car inside a building" prank, back in Ōarai's former Sensha-do years.]]
* TeamSpirit: Relies on this [[spoiler:when Ōarai's other tanks tow it so it can climb the hill fast enough during the battle with Kuromorimine.]]
* ThePeepingTom: Even if a non-sentient, inanimate object, the tank is [[DiscussedTrope accused of being one]] by Tsuchiya, [[PlayedForLaughs in jest]] of Hoshino wearing [[CustomUniformOfSexy her usual attire]] near it. Hoshino's [[HandOrObjectUnderwear reaction]], however, is of thinking it plausible.
* YouShallNotPass: [[spoiler: {{Invoked}} in the FinalBattle as it blocks Erika's squad from intefering with Miho and Maho's [[ShowdownAtHighNoon polite family chat]]. Bonus points for being ''the tank'' to utter the line through [[BodyLanguage non-verbal]] [[{{BFG}} comunication]].]]

* AdaptationalCurves: She seems to be bustier in the ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' manga than in the anime. At the very least, this is the case during the pool party segment.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: She and Suzuki have a somewhat darker skin tone than most of the rest of the cast.
* BadassDriver: Has the title of "#1 Fastest Girl of Ooarai", and suggests accel bags for best drifting the tank.
* CustomUniformOfSexy: Wears her work overalls with the upper part rolled down and sleeves tied around the waist, revealing her sleeveless shirt underneath.
* ModestyTowel: After losing her clothing in an improvished drum bath. {{Defied}} by her but {{Enforced}} by Nakajima.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' plays up this aspect of Hoshino's character significantly. During a heatwave, when the other members of the Automotive Club are all wearing their overalls [[CustomUniformOfSexy Hoshino-style]], Hoshino goes one step further and goes ''topless''. When that doesn't fly, she settles for wearing a bikini instead, earning the entire Automotive Team a scolding from Sodoko when the rest of them follow suit.
