An information dealer whom Adol encounters at a bar in Casnan, Duren claims to have met Adol before – though with no memory, Adol remains skeptical. An extremely kind-hearted man (though he’d never admit it), Duren can’t bring himself to walk away from someone in need, making him a perfect travel companion.
----
* AdaptationalHairstyleChange: In most versions of the game, including the remake ''Memories of Celceta'', he wore his hair in a ponytail. In ''Dawn of Ys'', he wore his hair short.
* AdaptationalHeroism: He is not much of a hero and more of a significant background character in both ''Ys IV: Mask of the Sun'' and ''Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys''. He is one of the main heroes in ''Ys: Memories of Celceta''.
* CallForward: He calls Adol a "goody-two-shoes", just like Geis did back in ''VideoGame/YsVITheArkOfNapishtim'', [[spoiler:{{Foreshadowing}} Duren and Geis come from the same clan]].
* ChewToy: Duren's a target of many snarky comments from party members and {{Non Player Character}}s alike.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Frieda [[spoiler:and, presumably, Gruda since they all grew up in Danan Village.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: [[spoiler:He's a member of the "Clan of Darkness", one of two sets of recurring antagonists in the ''Ys'' franchise, specifically a descendant of those who chose to exile themselves in shame of what they did that ultimately caused the "[[{{Precursors}} Eldeen]]" civilization to collapse. These people built the underground village of Danan to hide themselves from the rest of the world as a form of repentance, but also to monitor Eldeel's activities, as his dark persona is a cause of concern due to events surrounding him and the destruction of the ancient "Kingdom of Celceta" centuries ago]].
* DuelBoss: In Comodo, Lindsay and Marcella will ask Adol and Duren to duel each other, with Adol as the controllable character and Duren as the boss. Winning is optional, but will reward the player with extra gold, an achievement, and Duren's entry in the monster guide.
* ExpyCoexistence: ''Memories of Celceta'' made him very similar to Dogi, being a large male CloseRangeCombatant who provides the most exposition for the party.
* HypocriticalHumor: He claims he hates "goody-two-shoes"-types like Adol, but as others point out, Duren is often too kind for his own good.
* KiManipulation: Certain skills he acquires, almost all of them melee-based, involve using this to close the gap between him and enemy targets.
* KungFuWizard: Played with - Duren justifies his aptitude for magic is less than stellar, which is why he doesn't use it and opts for GoodOldFisticuffs.
* KnowledgeBroker: He helps out Adol with his ability to gather information and point out the places in the Great Forest of Celceta they should visit.
* MasterOfUnlocking: His unique ability is to lockpick certain chests.
* MiserAdvisor: {{Lampshaded}} in his introduction scene, where Duren declares Adol is his favorite "source of money" before correcting it to "friend".
* NiceGuy: Played with - Duren helping Adol regain his lost memories turns out to be not so altruistic, yet he's shown to be the type of person who doesn't like leaving people in trouble, as much as he hates to admit it.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Justified; [[spoiler:Danan Village's elder tasked Duren with keeping an eye on Adol after the latter met with Eldeel pre-memory loss to determine whether the latter's dark persona would arise again. Duren playing the KnowledgeBroker is so he can point Adol back to the direction where he was before the memory loss]]
* ShipTease: According to Nina's dialogue in a certain flashback sequence, Duren might have a thing for Frieda. Whether or not they actually do have feelings for one another is never elaborated on.
* StoneWall: Out of the two striking characters, he can take a lot of damage but not deal as much of it as Calilica.
* {{Tsundere}}: A RareMaleExample, though a mild one - any teasing against him with regards to Frieda and he'll clam up and deny it.
* WhiteSheep: In ''The Dawn of Ys'', most of the Clan of Darkness is evil. [[spoiler:He is a member of this clan, but is rebelling from it and is a good man.]]

A young GenkiGirl who lives in the treetop village of Comodo, Karna is an extremely skilled huntress. One of the best warriors in Comodo, she puts most of the other hunters in the village to shame with her accuracy and cunning talent. Her weapons are throwing knives, though she has an unfortunate habit of throwing first and asking questions later.
----
* AdaptationalHairstyleChange: In previous versions of ''Ys IV'', Karna had BoyishShortHair worn straight. In ''Memories of Celceta'', she wears it short in a ponytail.
* AdaptationalModesty: Zigzagged; on the one hand, her outfits in ''Dawn'' and the [=SNES=] version ''Mask'' exposed her cleavage, unlike her attire in the [=PS2=] version of ''Mask''. On the other hand, ''Memories'' gives her an outfit that exposes her midriff in exchange for being less tight around the chest.
* AllAmazonsWantHercules: She thinks it's a great idea to marry Adol because he will make a good sparring partner.
* BigEater: Implied; upon visiting Casnan, she loves trying new things foods, and she dreams about eating while sleeping in Highland.
* BlowYouAway: Her primary element seen in her some of her skills, such as "Tornado Blade".
* BottomlessMagazines: She never runs out of throwing knives.
* CoolBigSis: She acts as a dependable older sister not only towards her younger twin brother Remnos, but also towards the children in Comodo.
* DanceBattler: "Mistral Spin" is a close-ranged launcher skill where she creates a cyclone by break-dancing.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Justified; one leg of her pants is completely cut off to allow a knife belt fitted firmly on her thigh.
* FragileSpeedster: Compared to Ozma, she has faster attacks, deals less damage per hit, and cannot take as much damage.
* GenkiGirl: She's full of energy, which is best shown when she [[InASingleBound leaps off from the tallest structure in Casnan down to the ground]] and gives Adol TheGlomp upon reuniting with him in Casnan.
* GirlOfTheWeek: Karna is another in a long line of girls that fall for [[ChasteHero Adol]], only for him to inevitably leave her behind to head to another adventure.
* HeroicBSOD: She undergoes this when she discovers that [[spoiler:Remnos has been hiding his talent all along, allegedly driving his FaceHeelTurn.]] [[PluckyGirl She quickly gets back on her feet]], however.
* TheGlomp: She gives Adol a tackle-hug after finding him in Casnan.
* HartmanHips: While they might not be as pronounced as [[MsFanservice Frieda's]], her wide hips are still noticeable.
* {{Leitmotif}}: She had one named after herself in ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihbdFG99sck Ys IV: Mask of the Sun]]'' and ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZzlpTBVKh0 Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys]]''. It's not present anymore in ''Memories of Celceta''.
* LongRangeFighter: She cannot take much damage, nor can she do much damage per hit, but her attacks have very long range.
* PoisonedWeapons: "Poison Knife" will inflict the poison status ailment against her targets.

[[folder:Ozma]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ys_moc_ozma.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/DaisukeNamikawa (Japanese), Creator/SeanChiplock (English)

A resident of the village of Selray, the young Ozma is the SoleSurvivor of an unnamed tribe which cares for their "sacred beasts" called Spardas, water-faring creatures the villagers use to hunt fish, their primary source of sustenance in Celceta. He is also Selray’s leader and has managed to uphold its peaceful ways for as long as he’s been in charge. Reliable, level-headed and dedicated, Ozma is loved and respected by all of the village’s residents. While extremely stubborn and inflexible when it comes to the laws of his tribe, he is also extremely loyal to the people in his charge.
----
* BadassBoast: Delivers a ShutUpHannibal at [[spoiler:Gadis' HannibalLecture]] when the Spardas [[spoiler:aren't actually as "divine" as Selray's residents were led to believe]].
--> "[[spoiler:I am in a position to change those laws]]!"
* ButtMonkey: In Danan, he of all people becomes the butt of some jokes with regards to romance.
* CanonForeigner: He's a completely new character made for ''Memories of Celceta'', not appearing in the earlier versions of ''Ys IV''.
* ChargedAttack: Played with - the time it takes for some of his offensive skills to execute require a lengthy charge-up. Leveling up these skills generally shortens the time it takes to pull them off.
* CloseRangeCombatant: Subverted. While his spear is typically a melee weapon in most games, his melee chain and many of his skills have hitboxes that extend surprisingly far past his spear's reach, though he still doesn't have as much range as Karna. Taking advantage of his mid-range hitbox is a key part of his playstyle, since his attacks have a lot of wind-up time.
* DishingOutDirt: Many of his skills involve the earth element.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: A late-game sidequest reveals one Selray resident who takes care of the Spardas in his absence harbors a crush on him, [[ShipperOnDeck something the rest of the party approves of]].
* LastOfHisKind: The sole remaining member of a tribe designated as Sparda caretakers. It's also what drives him to seek the truth behind the myths about the Spardas.
* MagicKnight: Implied when Ozma has skills that summon water and earth to assail his enemies, in particular Water Prison, where he launches a water bubble to encage his target.
* MakingASplash: The other half of his skills are related to the water element.
* MightyGlacier: Compared to Karna, he is stronger, slower, and tougher.
* PursuingParentalPerils: His parents died on an incident at the Sparda breeding grounds when he was little. While it makes Ozma uncomfortable about visiting the place, it doesn't deter him from performing the same job as his parents did.

[[folder:Calilica]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ys_moc_calilica.png]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/YuiOgura (Japanese), Creator/CassandraLeeMorris (English)

An energetic, curious young girl from the village of Highland. Mature beyond her years, Calilica harbors something of a complex about her age and youthful appearance, and is constantly seeking to be recognized as an adult by those around her. An apprentice apostle to Eldeel, she looks up to fellow apostle Leeza as a surrogate older sister, having grown up with her since they were children. As such, she will hold back at nothing if she can be of assistance to her.
----
* BadassAdorable: She may be tiny, but she packs a lot of punch with that giant hammer.
* BirdRun: While other party members run normally, Calilica runs like this.
* BrattyHalfPint: Despite her wise demeanor, she'll often resort to mischief, such as ''biting Duren'' when she doesn't agree with him.
* CanonForeigner: She was created for ''Memories of Celceta'' and did not appear in earlier versions of ''Ys IV''.
* CutenessProximity: One of the few times she'll show herself to be NotSoAboveItAll is when she squees at the sight of [[spoiler:a village full of Roos]].
* GlassCannon: She can deal loads of damage, but cannot take much of it before she is knocked out. In fact, it's what stops her from being a GlacierWaif.
* LittleMissSnarker: Tends to get snarky, especially when Duren is involved.
* [[BigBrotherInstinct Little Sister Instinct]]: The whole reason she forces her way into Adol's party is because she is concerned for Leeza.
* ShockAndAwe: The majority of her skills are lightning-based, though they don't inflict the paralysis status effect by default.
* TokenMiniMoe: At 14, she's the only kid in Adol's party.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Justified, since she's training to be one of Eldeel's apostles.

[[folder:Frieda]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/friedanina.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Frieda (left) and Nina (right)]]
->'''Fried voiced by''': Creator/YukoKaida (Japanese), Creator/WendeeLee(English)
->'''Nina voiced by''': Creator/YuiKano (Japanese)

[[LadyOfWar A female knight]] from the village of Danan who also serves as a storyteller, Frieda has a homunculus fairy called Nina as a partner and wields a halberd. ChildhoodFriends with Duren, she accompanies Adol's party when the nature of Danan Village proves to an important stop for him and its residents' history with not only Eldeel, but the region of Celceta.
----
* CallForward: Frieda brings two shocking ones related to ''Ys VI''.
** A massive one you can learn from her mother in a Red Memory flashback is that [[spoiler:Ernst, the BigBad of ''VideoGame/YsVITheArkOfNapishtim'', was Frieda's fiancée and he left with Gruda when the latter rebelled against the Danan leadership, taking the Black Key Almarion with him.]] Frieda and Nina also comment on [[spoiler:Geis]] when explaining to Ozma about Nina's existence.
** Nina's existence pretty much explains where [[spoiler:Ernst's faeries]] in ''Ys VI'' came from [[spoiler:as Ernst was the one who made her.]]
* CanonForeigner: She was created for ''Memories of Celceta'' and did not appear in older versions of ''Ys IV''.
* ChildhoodFriends: She's known Duren since their youth. [[spoiler:The two also knew Gruda, but any friendship they might've had before is long gone by the time the game starts.]]
* CleavageWindow: Frieda's outfit has a hole in the chest area, showing off plenty of cleavage from her ample bosom.
* CoolBigSis: She tries to act as a dependable older sister-figure towards the younger party members, hence why she frequently calls herself [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseSiblingTerminology Oneesan]] in the Japanese script.
* DarkIsNotEvil: [[spoiler:She's a descendant of the Clan of Darkness like everyone in Danan Village, but she's still one of the good guys.]]
* FairyCompanion: She's accompanied by Nina, a small homunculus fairy created through alchemy that talks "too much".
* GlassCannon: She can deal more damage than Adol (this game's other slash damage-dealing character), but she cannot take as much damage as him.
* HeartbrokenBadass: If Frieda's mother and Nina's words are true, her fiancée [[spoiler:Ernst]] leaving the village [[spoiler:with Gruda]] years earlier is still a sore spot for her.
* AnIcePerson: Many of her skills involve creating icicles, with some able to inflict the freeze status effect.
* ItsPersonal: [[spoiler:She's got it in for Gruda, as Ernst joined Gruda's cause and stormed out of Danan with him, also joining the Romun Empire. Danan's Elder is even unsure if Frieda should go with Adol in chase of Gruda due to how personal it is for her.]]
* MagicKnight: Frieda combines offensive attacks with plenty of magic spells via her skills; in fact, she's the only person in the party who is capable of actively casting magic.
* MsFanservice: She has the largest chest and [[HartmanHips widest hips]] of the female party members, her outfit includes a CleavageWindow, and she can also be TheTease.
* NarratorAllAlong: Implied in ''Memories of Celceta'', given she's a storyteller [[spoiler:and is fed information on Adol's whereabouts by Duren via Nina throughout the game before his party reaches Danan]]. That the ending of the game is but one re-telling of his adventures in Celceta, taken from Frieda's perspective, is a possibility.
* ShipperOnDeck: It's implied that Nina wants Frieda to become an OfficialCouple with Duren, given her complaints about how Duren's constant restraint has prevented their relationship from progressing.

[[folder:Governor-General Griselda (UNMARKED SPOILERS)]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ysc_griselda.png]]
[[quoteright:350:[[labelnote:Griselda during''Ys VIII'']]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/griselda_ys_8_1.png[[/labelnote]]]]
->'''Voiced in ''Memories'' drama CD by''': Creator/MamiKingetsu
->'''Voiced in ''Ys VIII'' by:''' Creator/NaomiOzora (Japanese)

Recently stationed in Celceta at the Frontier City of Casnan by the Romun Empire, Griselda tasks Adol with clearing monsters and creating a map of the Great Forest of Celceta.
----
* TheCameo: Griselda returns in ''VideoGame/YsVIIILacrimosaOfDana'', provided players find her, as the last of the castaways shipwrecked on the Isle of Seiren aboard the Lombardia passenger vessel.
* CanonForeigner: She's one of the new characters introduced in ''Memories of Celceta'', not appearing in ''Mask of the Sun'' or ''The Dawn of Ys''.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Played with - while she and Commander Leo show that not all Romuns are bad, they both acknowledge non-Romuns' mistrust towards Romn is more or less justified due to its corruption and militant expansionist policies.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: From a tied-up bun in ''Memories of Celceta'' to a side ponytail in ''Ys VIII''; justified in order to keep hiding her identity as Romun royalty.
* InternalReformist: One of the few members of the Romun Empire that fights against the corruption that is typical of this imperialist nation.
* QuestGiver: She asks Adol to create the map of Celceta, the CartographySidequest that spans throughout the game.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: The townspeople of Casnan are surprised to find that unlike previous governor-generals who only cared about lining their pockets, Griselda sincerely tries to improve the living conditions of people in the various villages, such as placing guards as a protection detail after Gruda's forces deliberately attack Highland, confirming his evil intentions. She is also one of the few authority figures from the Romun Empire who isn't hostile to Adol at any point in the series.
* RebelliousPrincess: In one of the scattered memories that don't belong to Adol in ''Memories of Celceta'', it's implied Griselda left the Romun capital because she's depised for her reformist attitude by the majority of the Empire, something Leo knows too well.
* TheReveal: Turns out she's the fourth princess of the Romun Empire, disgraced due to her strong position against its warmongering tendencies. Not that she makes angst out of it or even ''wants people to know'' about her past.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: After Gruda's attack on Highland, she personally visits to apologize and has her troops stationed there and at Selray as a defensive measure rather than as an occupational force. In ''Ys VIII'', having her join with Castaway Village and she will provide off-screen assistance during Beast Raids and Beast Hunts with her raid skill.
* YouLookFamiliar: InUniverse example - upon Adol's party meeting her in ''Ys VIII'', Laxia von Roswell states she's certain she met Griselda in the past, but Griselda denies it to hide her identity as the fourth princess of the Romun Empire, even reasoning that were she a princess, she would not address herself as "Governor-General."

The commanding officer in charge of Romun troops stationed in Celceta, Leo was once held in high esteem as "[[RedBaron Roaring Leo]]", but was demoted and [[ReassignedToAntarctica sent to Celceta]]. Throughout ''Memories of Celceta'', Leo is always seen with two Casnan conscripts under his command, [[ThoseTwoGuys Sancho and Panza]].
----
* AdaptationalHairstyleChange: While we never get to see what kind hair he styled it in during ''Mask of the Sun'', ''The Dawn of Ys'' has shown him as completely bald. In ''Memories of Celceta'', he has a nearly full head of hair grown out into a long ponytail.
* AdaptationalHeroism: His original versions in ''Mask of the Sun'' and ''The Dawn of Ys'' are downright evil, to the point of ObviouslyEvil in the latter game. Despite not being named in ''Mask of the Sun'', Leo dies fighting Adol when he attempts to conquer Comodo Village, while his counterpart in ''The Dawn of Ys'' is killed via his own greed upon triggering a trap. Commander Leo in ''Memories of Celceta'', despite putting a buffoonish demeanor, is far more heroic and survives the game, even assisting Adol during the climax of the story.
* AFatherToHisMen: [[spoiler:Leo took the blame for one of his subordinates' grievous mistakes, forcing his Romun superiors to demote and send him to Celceta, which the Empire considers a "backwater region."]]
* BaldOfEvil: In ''Dawn of Ys'', he had no hair on his head and was not a very pleasant fellow.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: On the outside, Leo in ''Memories of Celceta'' looks like the typical, high-strung imperialist officer who rags about his nobility and command experience; most Celcetans, including Adol's party, don't take him seriously. However, Leo proves he's far smarter and perceptive than he appears, such as [[spoiler:deducing the mushrooms Remnos provides to him, Sancho and Panza are poisonous to consume]].
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: [[spoiler:During the end-game of ''Memories of Celceta'', Leo proves his skill with a sword isn't just for show as he fights off several shadow creatures with ease]].
* DeathByMaterialism: In ''The Dawn of Ys'', Leo is motivated purely for treasure. Upon opening a treasure chest only Adol is authorized to do so by the dead, [[KarmicDeath Leo gets electrocuted]].
* FrontlineGeneral: Both versions of Leo in ''Mask of the Sun'' and ''Memories of Celceta'' fight alongside their men.
* TheGhost: [[spoiler:He doesn't appear in ''VideoGame/YsVIIILacrimosaOfDana'', but Griselda does briefly mention him by name during her max approval event.]]
* PluckyComicRelief: His purpose in ''Memories of Celceta'' is appear in front of Adol's party and make a complete fool out of himself and Romun soldiers under his command in various places around Celceta. The townspeople of Casnan think of him as a joke.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Despite his rambunctious personality, Leo genuinely wants to help out the people of Celceta in ''Memores of Celceta''. In fact, alongside Governor-General Griselda, Commander Leo proves not all Romun officials are bad - it's a shame when the majority of them are corrupt and have non-altruistic motivations.
* WeHaveReserves: Applied in ''The Dawn of Ys'', where Leo sends his troops into a fire trap, incinerating most of them.
* ThrowTheDogABone: By the end of ''Memories of Celceta'', some townspeople and soldiers start showing him the respect he deserves.
* UnknownRival: He tries to one-up Adol by going to the places Adol went and solving inhabitants' problems but only ends up making fool of himself in the process.

Karna's younger twin brother, Remnos is a bit of a BlackSheep in Comodo Village, as he has chosen the path of an artistan, craftsman and historian rather than following the way of the warrior. His disappearance from the village is what prompts Karna to join Adol's party.
----
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:He shows up alongside Leo to save help the party during the climax of ''Memories of Celceta''.]]
* BrilliantButLazy: Is accused by Comodo villagers of being this. [[spoiler:Played with when the "lazy" part is meant to mask Remnos being a prodigy in anything he does, including fighting. He works hard ''not to reveal'' how good he really is because he respects his sister's own hard work at being a huntress and [[HardWorkHardlyWorks doesn't want to discourage her by making it look too easy]].]]
* {{Determinator}}: [[spoiler:Withstands the effects of Bami's death curse on him long enough for Adol's team to kill her and break it.]]
* FaceMonsterTurn: He's turned into one in ''Mask of the Sun'' and fought as the first boss of the game.

An apostle of Eldeel who lives in the plateau town of Highland, the polite and quiet Leeza can act rashly to protect the people she holds dear.
----
* AdaptationalHairstyleChange: In the original ''Mask of the Sun'' and ''The Dawn of Ys'', she wore her hair in pigtails, albeit the latter game shown them longer than the former. In ''A New Theory'', she had long and untied hair. In ''Memories of Celceta'', her hair was long and mostly untied save for a small portion of it being tied in a ponytail.
* ApologeticAttacker: [[spoiler:During the boss fight against her and Sol-Galba in Danan]].

* {{Determinator}}: Her mettle and dedication to Eldeel makes you wish she was one of the party members in ''Memories of Celceta'': [[spoiler:She goes rogue completely on her own to try and solve Eldeel's SplitPersonality[=/=]SuperpoweredEvilSide problem, tries to acquire the Mask of the Sun from Danan Village by force via Sol-Galba so she can try to defuse Dark Eldeel ([[UnwittingPawn not knowing that getting the mask to him]] [[MacGuffinDeliveryService is a critical part of Gruda's plans]]), goes alone with Sol to the Colonia Artifact Laboratory to learn about her ancestors in search of useful information ([[ArtificialBrilliance and can handle her own]] ''even if your party can't''), and even offers to go with Adol into Iris in order to stop Gruda (the only thing stopping her is Eldeel asking her to be by his side and the fact that Sol is too big for Eldeel to be able to transport with the party into the Akashic Records).]]

* TheMedic: Heals the party when they travel with her in the Colonia Artifact Laboratory.

A WingedHumanoid who lives a solitary life on top of a tower in the Land of Origins, Eldeel is an Eldeenian, the last of the {{Precursors}} in the ''Ys'' mythology. Before Adol lost his memory, the two had encountered one another, where Eldeel invites him to share in his plans for the continent of Eresia, hoping to bequeath Adol knowledge that will drive him to continue his journey as an adventurer.
----
* AdaptationalHeroism: In ''Mask of the Sun'' and ''The Dawn of Ys'', he is only a villain. [[spoiler:In ''Memories of Celceta'', he is a hero with an evil second personality.]]
* BigBad: {{Zigzagged}}; while he plays this straight as the main antagonist in ''Mask of the Sun'', he becomes the secondary antagonist in ''The Dawn of Ys''. [[spoiler:In ''Memories of Celceta'', his dark personality is the one who came up with the idea of using the Mask of the Sun to test humanity with disasters; however, it's Gruda who [[DragonWithAnAgenda commandeers that role]] once the dark persona is sealed]].
* BigGood: He[[spoiler:, or at least his good personality,]] uses the Akashic Records to distribute knowledge in a way that maintains the world's balance. 253* ClimaxBoss: The boss fight is built up to be this as returning him to normal with the Mask of the Moon constitute a large component of the endgame and appears to be the ultimate goal.

* {{Forgiveness}}: Despite the Clan of Darkness's role in destroying his civilization, he saved them and gave them a second chance. [[spoiler:Danan Village is made of descendants of these who took the offer and became guardians of knowledge in Celceta.]]

* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: Downplayed with Dark Eldeel, who is antagonistic but [[spoiler:desires to foster creativity in humanity without driving them to extinction. 266* PhysicalGod: As an Eldeenian, he fits this with the sheer knowledge he has to share for humanity (from gunpowder to flying machines) and power ([[spoiler:as dark Eldeel can attest]].)
* ShipperOnDeck: He doesn't hesitate to think of Adol as a good match for Leeza in one of Adol's memories.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:In ''Mask of the Sun'' he gets killed in battle with Adol while he gets stabbed in the back by Gruda in ''The Dawn of Ys''. In the canon game, ''Memories of Celceta'', he instead seals himself away.]]
* SplitPersonality: [[spoiler:He has a heroic personality and an evil personality in ''Memories of Celceta''.]]
* TrashOfTheTitans: His study in the Tower of Providence has books and tools scattered all over the place. Despite Leeza's attempts to organize the room, Eldeel will just quickly make a mess again.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:Dark Eldeel is less evil than he is extreme - he wishes to invoke creativity in humans by creating as many obstacles for them to overcome. Triggering natural disasters throughout Eresia is but one method.]]

A large, armored man claiming to be a "[[TheBeastmaster beastmaster]]", Gadis is encountered in the ruins outside of Selray Village, harassing the Spardas and attempting to manipulate these creatures into servitude.
----
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: His incarnations from non-canon games were standard [[TheBrute brutes]], but his ''Memories of Celceta'' incarnation is a brute who espouses a twisted philosophy on mankind's relationship with beasts.
* TheCynic: He believes humans can only co-exist with animals by dominating them.
* FlunkyBoss: Will occasionally summon ferocious wolf-like "Dagbanther" beasts in the boss fight against him.
* MacrossMissileMassacre: One of his frequent attacks is firing off missiles from his ArmCannon that home in onto targets.
* MythologyGag: Tessho Genda reprises this character's role from ''The Dawn of Ys'' of ''Memories of Celceta'', even shouting "You're dead!" whenever he attacks, just like he does in his boss battle for the former game.
* ObviouslyEvil: His large and imposing appearance practically screams "villain." ''Memories'' further emphasizes this by giving him a giant metal weapon over his arm.

A sharp-eyed Romun official, Gruda comes from the Romun Empire to serve as an assistant to the Governor-General Griselda. He seems favorable to Adol's task of mapping out the Great Forest of Celceta, but there is more to him than meets the eye. Gruda is a former member of the Clan of Darkness from Danan Village. Unlike most members of the clan such as Duren and Frieda, Gruda was drawn by the power of the Eldeenians from their ancient artifacts and left with some like-minded villagers, including Frieda's fiance Ernst, to Romn many years before Adol's journey to Celceta. He returns to the region in search of the mythical Mask of the Sun.
----
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: The ''Memories of Celceta'' incarnation of Gruda is the only version to try to justify his plans as a "greater good" while the ''Dawn of Ys'' and ''Mask of the Sun'' versions don't bother to justify themselves, openly admitting to serving a mad warlord and wanting to conquer the world respectively.
* AdaptationalSympathy: In the non-canon Taito remake ''Ys IV: Mask of the Sun -A New Theory-'' he had a backstory where he lost his father as a result of a mining accident, playing a role in Gruda's turn to villainy. This was in stark contrast to other versions of the story where he was a straight up villain from start to finish.
* BigBad: Goes from TheHeavy in previous ''Ys IV'' games to a full-fledged example in ''Memories of Celceta''.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: In ''Memories of Celceta'', he makes an effort to appear to be a reasonable Romun officer, to the point of reprimanding a soldier for being rude to Adol. Underneath all that, he has no problem brainwashing his own troops and later admits to despising humanity enough to unleash the apocalypse on them.
* BlackSheep: Most members of the Clan of Darkness attempt to atone for their ancestors' sins, but Gruda wants none of it and desires the power of the gods. {{Lampshaded}} when he designates himself a "Darkling", the taboo term used by their ancestors who caused much destruction through their misuse of the Eldeen artifacts.
* CounterAttack: Combined with DefendCommand. His Phantom form can make use of Flash Guard to block an attack and give him a short period of time where he can land guaranteed critical hits.
* DeityOfHumanOrigin: By fusing with the AkashicRecords and becoming the "[[OneWingedAngel Akasha-Glyph]]", Gruda gains RealityWarper powers that allow him to reshape and rewrite the world as he sees fit.
* DragonAscendant: While he ends up being the true BigBad in ''Memories of Celceta'', dark Eldeel is the one who establishes the EvilPlan long before he was even born. All Gruda does is to merely take over once dark Eldeel is neutralized [[ApocalypseHow and then make the plan even more extreme]].
* DragonInChief: Gruda in ''The Dawn of Ys'' serves Leo, but he's clearly more dangerous than Leo.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: In ''The Dawn of Ys''; {{downplayed}} in ''Memories of Celceta'', where he shares Eldeel's view humanity must overcome trials, but is more willing to wipe them out if they can't pass.
* DuelBoss: "Phantom Gruda", whom Adol must fight by himself without help from the party ([[JustifiedTrope since they're buying him time to toss the Mask of the Sun into an active volcano]]), is the FinalBoss of ''Memories of Celceta''.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: {{Subverted}}; Gruda disagrees with the previous Darklings' ''modus operandi'' of blindly seeking Eldeenian artifacts for the sake of power. Unfortunately, his goals are far more destructive, since the previous group of Darklings during ''Ys Origin'' simply planned to TakeOverTheWorld, whereas Gruda believes TheApocalypseBringsOutTheBestInPeople.
* EvilFormerFriend: Of Duren and Frieda
* EvilerThanThou: After he sees dark Eldeel hold back against the party and lose, Gruda considers him too weak and merciful to test humanity. Gruda ends up being far more extreme compared to prior Darklings and Ernst, to the point of trying to wipe out his own species if it fails to meet his standards.
* FlunkyBoss: Summons several pillars to assist him during the Akasha-Glyph boss battle.
* FragileSpeedster: While Phantom Gruda is far more agile than the Akasha-Glyph, with its humanoid form's having similar attack patterns and defenses like members of Adol's party, [[ClippedWingAngel it ultimately weaker than the Akasha-Glyph]].
* {{Hypocrite}}: Before his boss fight as Akasha-Glyph, he demands that the party overcome his "trial" and reveal their true potential. After they do exactly what he demands by defeating him, Gruda [[SoreLoser refuses to accept the result]] and futilely tries to stop them from destroying the Mask of the Sun.
* InsaneAdmiral: A officer of the Romun Empire, until he defects with a rogue faction of his own.
* KnightTemplar: The previous Darklings were {{Card Carrying Villain}}s, but Gruda is convinced [[SocialDarwinist his cause]] is just, despite how it can result in the annihilation of humanity.
* {{Leitmotif}}: In ''Memories of Celceta'', "The False God of Causality" plays during the battle with Akasha-Glyph," while "The Final Decisive Battle" plays when fighting Phantom Gruda.
* TheManBehindTheMan: He is the one behind the disasters that befall Celceta at the beginning of the game.
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: An extreme version for {{Eastern RPG}}s - Gruda intends on using the power of the Akashic Records to create a massive calamity on Eresia for humanity because he believes humanity can unlock their full potential only in the face of extreme danger.
* MisanthropeSupreme: His darwinistic beliefs are based not just on raw power, but also contempt towards humanity for being [[ApatheticCitizens too complacent]] to change the status quo when necessary.
* NotSoSimilar: Near the end of the game, he tries to claim that he and Adol are similar for risking their lives to "do what is necessary." However, his definition of "necessary" is completely different from Adol's, since Adol genuinely wants to help the people around him while Gruda just wants to impose his views on humanity [[NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist regardless of their wellbeing]].
* PsychoSupporter:
** In ''Dawn of Ys'', he fully supports Arem's goal of turning the world into a living hell.
** {{Deconstructed}} in ''Memories of Celceta'': he starts off believing that Dark Eldeel shares his vision of ruthlessly "testing" humanity, to the point where he willingly relinquishes the Mask of the Sun in the hopes that the Black-winged One will accomplish his goals for him. Once he realizes that Dark Eldeel has a sense of mercy, Gruda states his disappointment and steals the mask in order to bring about the apocalypse himself. Gruda is an example of what this trope leads to when the supporter learns that his boss isn't as psycho as he is.
* RageAgainstTheHeavens: Unlike most examples of this trope, he turns on Eldeel not for being a MadGod, but for not being mad enough to unleash his full power upon humanity.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: Unlike Eldeel, Gruda believes if humans cannot survive his trials, they don't deserve to exist - [[SocialDarwinist that only the strong deserve life and the weak must perish]].
* SpoilerOpening: The introduction to ''Memories of Celceta'' shows him smiling deviously while the town of Highland is burning to the ground. Meanwhile, one of the trailers for game has him state "Humans are like insects before the power of the ancient one", clearly showcasing his ObviouslyEvil traits. Of course, those who have played other versions of ''Ys IV'' already know this character is an antagonist through-and-through.
* TheStarscream:
** In ''The Dawn of Ys'', Gruda serves Eldeel, but kills him when his goal of restoring the Eldeen conflicts with Gruda's goal of resurrecting Arem, the ancient leader of the Clan of Darkness, and having Arem conquer and rule Celceta.
** Double subverted in ''Memories of Celceta''. Unlike his non-canon counterparts, he sees Dark Eldeel as a kindred spirit in forcing humanity to endure disasters to become stronger, and thus has no problem with being TheDragon. Unfortunately, he's loyal to his ideals rather than to Dark Eldeel, and he turns on the latter for throwing the fight against Adol's party. Gruda realizes that Dark Eldeel would never go as far as to risk humanity's extinction in order to test them, which the former intends on doing.
* ThisCannotBe: After losing against Adol as the DuelBoss in ''Memories of Celceta''.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: According to the villagers of Danan, he was this before getting seduced by the power of the Eldeen artifacts.
* VillainousBreakdown: Once Adol's party defeats his god-like Akasha-Glyph form, Gruda becomes completely unhinged. His spirit returns in the form of Phantom Gruda, while repeatedly muttering "[[MadnessMantra KILL. KILL. KILL]]."
* WeakButSkilled: Phantom Gruda is statistically weak for his level, which is why he relies on evasion and Flash Guard to throw the player off, unlike most bosses who neglect defensive tactics.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Fits the white haired pretty boy look down pat.
* WolverineClaws: Phantom Gruda sports these as the DuelBoss.

A tyrant who centuries ago manipulated both sides of a conflict that broke out between two halves of Celceta's population to keep them distracted while his armies proceed to butcher many on both sides of the conflict so he can rule the country with an iron fist. This ambition came to an end when Lefance engaged his forces in battle and overthrew him.

Eventually, he is revealed as the true master of the Clan of Darkness. Gruda, who was one of his subordinates, resurrects Arem who is fueled with fury over his defeat from centuries ago and is now determined to get revenge on Lefance by instigating the extermination of all life.
----
* BadBoss: When he is about to lose to Adol, Arem devours the souls of his followers to try and drag him down to the grave.
* BattleThemeMusic: The first two rounds of his boss fight have "In the Flames of Ignition" while the last round uses "The Final Decisive Battle".
* {{BFS}}: He wielded one such sword in a flashback when he fought against Lefance. He also wields it in his second form during his boss fight, [[OneHandedZweihander albeit with one hand]].
* CanonForeigner: Appeared only in ''Ys IV: Dawn of Ys'', an alternative version of ''Ys IV''.
* EvilOverlooker: He overlooks the other characters while in full armor and shadowed in the page image for ''Dawn of Ys''.
* GreaterScopeVillain: Of ''Ys IV: Dawn of Ys''. He is the true leader of the Clan of Darkness.
* {{Leitmotif}}: His very own one is "Arem".
* LightningBruiser: He is very fast for his size especially in his second form, has many hard-hitting attacks, takes a long time to wear down even if your EXP is maxed out, and can regenerate his HP.
* MarathonBoss: He has three lifebars (the last form fortunately is a ClippedWingAngel), a laundry list of powerful attacks, is hard to hit, your attacks only do minuscule damage even with max EXP, and he can regenerate his HP.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: His name sounds like Ahriman.
* OneWingedAngel: He transforms into a gigantic humanoid blob, after you defeat his normal and SuperMode forms. Actually more of a ClippedWingAngel.
* RedBaron: Lord of Slaughter.
* SoreLoser: He takes any moment he loses poorly. When Lefance defeated him, he was enraged over the centuries he spent in the realm of chaos. When Adol manages to best him in his second form, Arem tries to drag him down to hell with him.
* TakingYouWithMe: Tries this on Adol when he's dying.
* TurnsRed: After depleting Arem's first health bar (which is tough and long enough), he gains PoweredArmor and becomes even faster, tougher and deadlier. Fortunately, for his final form he is reduced to an easy-to-beat BlobMonster.
