!Team 7
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/team_kakashi.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:The original composition[[note]]'''From left to right:''' '''Front Row:''' Sasuke, Sakura, Naruto '''Back Row:''' Kakashi[[/note]]]]

The main group of protagonists in the series.

The team initially consists of Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura under the primary leadership of Kakashi. The team disbands at the end of Part I, and then reforms sans Sasuke over the first two arcs of Part II with Sai as replacement Sasuke and Yamato as temporary commander. However Sasuke returns during the Fourth Shinobi World War (out of necessity) and Team 7 is reborn in previous form.

{{Honorary True Companion}}s who stayed for an arc or two include Shikamaru, Killer Bee, the rest of the Konoha 11, their Jonin masters, and occasionally the Sannin as mentors to Team 7 also qualify.

Not to be confused with the [[ComicBook/Team7 comic book]] of the same name.

[[folder:In General]]
!!Team 7 provides examples of:
* AnimalMotifTeam: Each of the three original genin have been paired with the animal summon that the Sannin have been associated with. Naruto signed a contract with the toads under Jiraiya's tutelage and learned sage jutsu from the toads later in the series. Sasuke learned to summon and use several diverse jutsus involving snakes from Orochimaru in early Part II. After learning the truth of Itachi, Sasuke began using hawk summons, but retained the snake contract as well. Sakura is able to use slug summons being Tsunade's student.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura respectively.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: [[spoiler:All three of the male members of the team end up marrying a female from the original Rookie 9. Sai marries Ino Yamanaka, Naruto marries Hinata of the Hyuga clan, and Sasuke marries his teammate Sakura. Downplayed with Sai, since he met Ino later into their teenage years, whereas the other two couples knew each other since the academy days.]]
* ChromaticArrangement: Naruto - Yellow (or Orange), Sasuke - Blue, Sakura - Red (or Pink), Kakashi - Green.
* FighterMageThief:
** At the beginning of the series: Naruto is the fighter specialized in close quarters, Sasuke is the mage, being a ninjutsu specialist and also the only one who can use elemental techniques and Sakura, who has no particular talent (aside from other characters claiming she is a genjutsu specialist, which would also qualify her for this role), is the thief who relies mostly on ninja tools and traps.
** By the end of the series: Sakura becomes the fighter, since her main offensive ability is her monstruous strength. Naruto is the mage who gains mastery over almost all possible elements (including kekkei genkai and the godlike Yin-Yang Release) and has nearly infinite chakra reserves. Sasuke's Mangekyo Sharingan, combined with his nimble fighting style and unique Rinnegan ability which allows him to switch places with any objects he looks at, makes him the thief.
%%* {{Five-Man Band}}:
%%** TheLeader: Naruto, as he is the main character.
%%** TheLancer: Sasuke and Sai.
%%** TheSmart Guy: Kakashi.
%%** TheBig Guy: Yamato.
%%** TheHeart: Sakura.
* FreudianTrio: Naruto represents the Id as he was loud, impulsive, boastful, hyperactive, stubborn, instinctual, etc.; Sasuke the [[IceQueen cool]], collected, (seemingly) emotionless and logical Super Ego with Sakura falling into the middle as the Ego by default. Interesting in that Naruto and Sasuke gradually exchange their roles through the course of the story, while Sakura's role remains mostly the same.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The Team 7:
** Sanguine: [[TheHero Naruto Uzumaki]]. Cheeky and high-spirited, but also the quickest to lose his temper for better or worse cases. He's [[IdiotHero very simple-minded and naive at first]], but that only adds to his charm.
** Choleric: [[ActionGirl Sakura Haruno]]. Studious yet short-tempered and a constant Tsundere. She often knocks Naruto back in line, whenever he (or anyone) acts foolish. At first she was helpless and not very skilled, but overtime became a [[TheSquadette powerhouse]] as she matured.
** Melancholic: [[ByronicHero Sasuke Uchiha]]. Distant, aloof and internally sensitive. He didn't value people very much (let alone his conrades), and was obsessed with vengeance and power. He was clearly the most bitter member of the team, but later learns a [[HeelFaceTurn very harsh lesson]] in bonds and friendship.
** Phlegmatic: [[BadassTeacher Kakashi Hatake]]. One of the calmest and chill characters of the series. Though he was formerly Melancholic as a kid, he [[TookALevelInKindness opened up to people]] after tragedy struck his life. Deceptively nonchalant, he's the backbone of the team who tries his best to keep his students cooperative, despite the unfortunate incidents that would follow.
* GenerationXerox:
** Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura trained under a Sannin over the TimeSkip, learning their summons and part of the moveset, and furthering their personality comparisons. Sasuke/Orochimaru was the student who left to further his own power, Jiraiya/Naruto was the dedicated, dreamer friend who can't give them up, and Tsunade/Sakura the woman caught in the middle. Kakashi/Sarutobi was the master who put the most stock in the student who left and [[spoiler:ultimately had to fight them later on after being promoted to Sixth Hokage candidate/Third Hokage]].
** They have a few similarities to the Team 7 under the Fourth Hokage - Naruto/Obito was the loud jokester who was looked down upon for having "lesser" abilities, the heart of the group; Sasuke/Kakashi was the serious "cool" guy, completely single-minded in his dedication and something of a prodigy; and Sakura/Rin was the cool guy's fangirl who didn't recognize the jokester's one-sided crush on her, had a bright demeanor, and was essentially the group's medic.
*** It goes even further, as both teams consist of a Jinchuuriki, an Uchiha (who would eventually betray the Leaf Village) and an otherwise "normal" member (that is to say, they have no super special awesome legacy passed down for generations to inherit).
** And a third and fourth times by way of the Sage of Six Paths; [[spoiler:Naruto and Sasuke are reincarnations of the Sage's two sons, Asura is the no-good fighter who inherited his father's legacy and ultimately fostered cooperation with other people while Indra is the genius fighter with special eyes who was able to take advantage of his genetic predisposition to power, and was able to do everything on his own. Two previous reincarnations were Hashirama and Madara]].
** Team 7 itself get's "xeroxed" in the sequel, ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'', with Team Konohamaru (Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki).
* HairContrastDuo: Naruto, the blond, is the "good" one: hopeful, enthusiastic, naive and helpful while Sasuke is the black haired "bad" one: moody, testy, serious, cynical, often languishes in {{Wangst}}, with a DarkAndTroubledPast.
* NeverForgottenSkill:
** Teamwork. No matter how long it's been since they've seen each other or how wildly their individual skills and personalities have evolved and diverged, the trio can still work in sync like they've been rehearsing daily when they end up on the same side of a battle.
** When Naruto came back after the TimeSkip, Naruto and Sakura were perfectly in sync against Kakashi, despite spending 2.5 years apart.
** During the battle with the Ten Tails they initiate the 'New Three-Way Deadlock' formation perfectly, and Naruto and Sasuke further combine Rasen-shuriken with Amaterasu and the Nine Tails Chakra Shroud with Susanoo - all this minutes after Sasuke decides to rejoin the group after being rogue for 3-4 years and only having seen Naruto and Sakura twice during that time.
* NinjaBrat: Naruto in particular, as he started the series as a bratty, immature, mischievous child who had failed the Ninja Academy graduation exam multiple times. Sakura and Sasuke both have their moments of immaturity in Part I as well.
* OnlyMostlyDead: Each member of the original team 7 has nearly died or has died and was brought back. Sakura nearly died in her fight against Sasori, but was revived by Chiyo. Kakashi died protecting Choji from Pain and Nagato revived him. Naruto and Sasuke were nearly killed [[spoiler:by Madara, while Sakura and Obito saved Naruto and Kabuto saved Sasuke]].
* PoorCommunicationKills: Despite the their teamwork, there are times when their not always on the same page and led to dire consequences, particularly Sasuke's StartOfDarkness or the events of the Five Kage Summit Arc. It may as well be their FatalFlaw.
* {{Protectorate}}: Most of the Team had come to see Naruto as this, despite his growing skill.
* SoleSurvivor:
** Naruto lost both of his parents when he was just a newborn. [[spoiler:In ''Boruto'' he loses Kurama as well.]] Karin is his cousin, but they rarely interacted with each other.
** Sasuke's entire family was taken out leaving him and Itachi the only living members of the Uchiha clan. [[spoiler:Later on in Shippuden, both Itachi and Obito die, making Sasuke the sole Uchiha until his daughter is born]].
** In addition to being the last member of his family, Kakashi is the sole survivor of [[spoiler:team Minato. He's also the last of the original 4 sensei to still be active when he becomes Hokage. Asuma died earlier in Shippuden, Kurenai was raising a daughter and Guy becomes wheelchair-bound]].
* SummonMagic: Frogs and toads for Naruto, Snakes and later [[GiantFlyer Hawks]] for Sasuke, [[BigCreepyCrawlies Slugs]] for Sakura, and [[CanineCompanion Dogs]] for Kakashi.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: At first, to the extent that, during Kakashi's test, the very idea of the three working together to steal the bells never once occurred to them.
* SurroundedBySmartPeople: Naruto frequently finds himself this, as hardly anybody truly [[OnceDoneNeverForgotten lets him forget it]], especially in this group.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Honestly, if you are ever a comrade of Naruto's, you will end up becoming this at some point, but it will usually peter out after a while. [[/folder]]

->''I've always considered myself to be a true ninja… but those were just empty words, because Sasuke and Naruto were always in the lead! [[LetsGetDangerous But now it's my turn to take the lead, and all of you can watch me from the background]]!''

The girl of Team 7. For most of the series Naruto [[DoggedNiceGuy has a comical unrequited crush on her]], but she acts dismissive towards him while she's in love with Sasuke; However, over the course of the series she grows to appreciate and care for Naruto [[FireForgedFriends as a friend]] [[TrueCompanions and teammate]] in great part [[CommonalityConnection due to their shared bond]] with Sasuke. She would eventually become Sasuke Uchiha's wife and the mother of Sarada Uchiha in ''Manga/{{Boruto}}''. Sakura herself is an intelligent, gifted ''kunoichi'' from Konoha. Unlike most other ninja in the series, she has no unique skills of her own, using only standard ninja techniques and her brains. As a result, during Part I, she mostly sits on the sidelines standing guard over someone. After failing to prevent her only love, Sasuke's defection, and seeing a badly injured Naruto in the hospital, she concludes that she can't leave things like this, and apprentices herself to Princess Tsunade with the intent of no longer being a burden and help bringing Sasuke back.

In Part II, Sakura has picked up SuperStrength and [[TheMedic medical skills]] courtesy of Tsunade's TrainingFromHell, which turns her from TheLoad to a fine kunoichi of her calibre. Her growth is shown in the first major fight of the new series, joining forces with Chiyo to help defeat Akatsuki member Sasori in a drawn-out battle, and her healing skills are put to use for much of the series.

From then on, Sakura's focus and presence in the story {{Zig Zags}} in importance, though the two constants that remain throughout are [[SingleTargetSexuality her unwavering love for Sasuke]] and [[LikeBrotherAndSister her platonic friendship with Naruto]]. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, she unlocks her full potential with the White Strength Seal and like her teacher Tsunade, gains a permanent mark on her forehead signifying mastery, although for the most part she serves as TheMedic. Even though she participates in the final battle against [[BigBad Kaguya]], Naruto and Sasuke do most of the fighting, but when Kaguya transports Sasuke to another dimension, she teams up with Obito to retrieve him and later, lands a blow on Kaguya that stuns her long enough for Naruto and Sasuke to seal her. By the story's end, [[EarnYourHappyEnding her love for Sasuke is finally realized and reciprocated]]; they marry after he is redeemed by Naruto and have one daughter together, Sarada Uchiha.

->Her hobbies are playing trivia games and memorizing new material for her medical studies.
->Favorite phrases: "A life with love throughout!" and "Courage"
----
* ACupAngst: Has a rather small chest and shows irritation about that at times, namely when observing Hinata during a bath.
* ActionGirl: Sakura initially lacked much in the way of combat ability, but by the time of Part II/''Shippuden'' she trained to attain SuperStrength surpassing that of most other ninja, eventually acquiring the Strength of a Hundred Seal. While not as skilled technique-wise as characters like Rock Lee, she can set off veritable earthquakes with simple punches and kicks alone; and can also use her medical jutsu offensively.
* ActionMom: She delivers in ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'' by defending [[spoiler:her husband Sasuke and their daughter Sarada from Shin]].
* ActionSurvivor: Becomes this in the Forest of Death, where she tries to protect her unconscious teammates from the Sound trio, despite being hopelessly outmatched.
* AdaptationalBadass:
** In the Five Kage Summit arc, she avoids fighting Sai, Lee and Kiba once Sai realizes that she plans to drug them so that she could [[KillTheOnesYouLove try and kill Sasuke by herself]]. She can't bring herself to kill him and he tries to kill her twice, during which she just stands there with an OhCrap expression. However, in ''VideoGame/NarutoShippudenUltimateNinjaStorm3'', she fights Sai after he figures out her plan and ''wins'', then she puts up a good fight against Sasuke, and even after Kakashi intervenes, she takes advantage of the distraction and comes within inches of actually stabbing Sasuke in the back, rather than being at a distance like in canon.
** In Chapter 614, she stands out in the open as Madara and Obito use the Wood Release: Cutting Technique to attack the Shinobi Alliance, and Kakashi [[DamselInDistress has to grab her, move her out of the line of fire, and protect her]]. However, in ''Shippuden'' Episode 364, she uses her SuperStrength to pull up an entire section of dirt and use it as a shield to protect herself and another person from the attack.
** In ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'' Chapter 6, she got warped away by Shin's Space-Time Dojutsu because she was standing next to him and his clone, and she wasn't fast enough to move. However, in ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' Episode 21, Sarada was the original target, but [[MamaBear Sakura]] pushed her out of the way and was teleported in her place.
** In ''Gaiden'' Chapter 9, her "fight" against Shin merely consists of her running around and getting things thrown at her, including getting smashed against a giant rock pillar. However, in ''Boruto'' Episode 23, this fight was considerably extended, where she put up a good fight against Shin, gaining the upper hand and catching him with the aforementioned pillar.
** Also in ''Gaiden'' Chapter 9, Sasuke defeats Shin rather quickly and by himself, by catching Shin off-guard and crushing him with the Susanoo. However, in ''Boruto'' Episode 23, this fight was also considerably extended, where Sakura helped him defeat Shin--he teleported her close enough to cripple Shin with her SuperStrength.
** In the movies and a few filler arcs, Sakura is shown to be more competent in battle, fighting and defeating one of the members of the [[QuirkyMiniBossSquad Quirky Mini Boss Squad]] on her own.
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Like the other members of the Konoha 12, Sakura appears in episode 1 of the anime. This also inserts some {{Foreshadowing}} of her fallout with Ino because she's wearing the red ribbon that Ino gave her to tie up her forehead bangs. When she earns her forehead protector, she no longer needs the ribbon and gives it back to Ino, becoming a full rival for Sasuke's affections.
* AdaptationalJerkass: The anime, especially in part 1 and in filler material, often made Sakura out to be more violent toward Naruto than she was in the manga.
* AesopAmnesia: In Part II and especially in the anime {{Filler}}, for the sake of [[PlayedForLaughs humor]], [[DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale Sakura would often forget that she promised to start treating Naruto better]].
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead:
** Sakura channels her brother-in-law Itachi when she taps Sarada's forehead, as Itachi used to do to Sasuke, and promises they'll finish discussing her father next time.
** When they were little, Ino poked Sakura in the forehead to comfort her.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Played straight at first, but later {{Deconstructed|Trope}} after the TimeSkip. Ultimately, [[SingleTargetSexuality she still loves Sasuke]], despite what he's become and despite that his actions threaten war, and her need to help stop him.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: A very mild example compared to many others. When Sakura was younger, she was always teased and made fun of because of [[InformedDeformity her big forehead]]; after Ino began to stick up for her, she became more outgoing. {{Iron|y}}ically, after befriending Ino and developing feelings for [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys Sasuke]], [[TookALevelInJerkass she became a bully especially towards Naruto]], who had ''far'' worse issues than her. She did gradually become nicer to him once they became teammates.
* AlliterativeFamily: '''Sa'''kura shares her first syllable with [[spoiler:her husband, '''Sa'''suke and daughter, '''Sa'''rada]].
* AloneWithThePsycho: In ''Naruto Gaiden'', [[spoiler:Shin Sr invokes this: she's all alone in his lair and, now that he's finished the transplant surgery on himself, he's going to kill her. She retorts that she'd been waiting to get as much intel out of him as possible before breaking free]].
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: [[spoiler:She shows some trace of this in ''Anime/BorutoNarutoTheMovie'' when she was in the audience cheering for her daughter loudly during the Chunin Exams]].
* AngerBornOfWorry: Regarding Naruto, she always worries about his safety in battles, regardless of his increasing skills. After his fight with Pain, she punched him for causing concern, then surprised him with a hug, signifying the progress in their relationship. Her concerns are reasonable; as the jinchuuriki of the Nine-Tails, Naruto attracts formidable foes, though her worries and their resulting actions complicate things for both of them.
* AnimalMotifs: Slugs, which is what she learns to summon while under the tutelage of Tsunade.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: She tries this at least three times without any success.
** When Sasuke defects from the village, Sakura confronts him and reveals her feelings. Sasuke thanks her, then knocks her out.
** When Sai reveals that Naruto has feelings for her and that his promise to bring Sasuke back for her is [[BrutalHonesty causing him a lot of pain]], Sakura breaks down in tears before resolving to handle the situation herself. She confronts Naruto and tells him she's gotten over Sasuke and finally fallen for him, everything she believed Naruto wanted to hear her say. Except that [[FalseConfession she didn't really mean any of it]], and Naruto sees right through it and rejects her false confession.
** When Naruto and Sasuke are about to have their FinalBattle to determine the fate of the Shinobi World, Sakura begs Sasuke to stop if she ever had even the smallest place in his heart. Sasuke hesitates for a moment before promptly knocking her out with a genjutsu of himself impaling her with Chidori, then sneers at how naive she is, in a bid to be finally alone and not have Sakura intervene.
*** [[spoiler:Though he later [[SubvertedTrope subverts]] this by marrying her]].
* BadassAdorable: Sakura is the adorable, blushing bookworm. She can just kick ass now.
* BadassBookworm: During the TimeSkip, Tsunade teaches her both SuperStrength and [[TheMedic medical ninjutsu]], the latter of which takes a great understanding of the human body.
* BadLiar: When she is truly desperate and when it comes someone she cares about:
** Later, when planning to take out Sasuke herself, she claims that she has defected from Konoha as well and wants to join him. Sasuke is naturally suspicious, and he calls her bluff when she is unable to [[IfYoureSoEvilEatThisKitten finish off Karin to back up her claims]].
* BandWagonTechnique: Part of Sakura's infamous [[FalseConfession fake love confession]] to Naruto sounds a lot like this, as she says that now that Naruto is a respected and admired hero of the Leaf Village, it's only natural that she falls in love with him, which is how he knew it wasn't genuine.
* BettyAndVeronica:
** She was the Archie for Naruto's "Betty" (friendly, hardworking ninja who later becomes a messiah-like person) and Sasuke's "Veronica" (arrogant, top-student who later becomes a rogue ninja).In the end, Sakura marries her Veronica.
** Both Hinata and Sakura were [[ShipTease teased]] with Naruto throughout the series. Hinata is the "Betty", and Sakura is the "Veronica" and both girls toy with the standard, classic traits for the roles. At the end of the manga, [[spoiler:it's Hinata who marries Naruto and Sakura marries Sasuke, [[SingleTargetSexuality the boy she always loved since the beginning]]]].
* BigSisterInstinct:
** Beginning from the Chuunin exams arc when Sakura vows to be kinder to Naruto (and even before then, such as defending Naruto from Sasuke's criticisms), she displays a protectiveness of [[LikeBrotherAndSister Naruto]], sometimes to the point of over-protectiveness, especially when it comes to [[SingleTargetSexuality Sasuke]]. This would include [[LockedOutOfTheLoop not telling Naruto that it was him, not Orochimaru, who destroyed the bridge and injured her in his Four-tails Mode]] out of her attempt to spare him the pain of guilt. When she learns from Sai [[BrutalHonesty in a rather blunt fashion]], that [[JerkassHasAPoint from his point of view]] she (out of his feelings for her) and Sasuke keep making Naruto suffer, she resorts to [[BreakHisHeartToSaveHim lying about having feelings for him now instead of Sasuke]]and shortly afterward when she tries to kill Sasuke by herself in order to spare Naruto or anyone else from shouldering the burden. Not to mention her resolve of wanting to become stronger (and later, a more competent healer) so that she can protect both Naruto and Sasuke and not have to choose which one to save.
** When it comes to Hinata, she exhibits a strong sense of protection and care. However, her demeanor towards Hinata is noticeably noticeably more tender compared to her behavior with Naruto.
* BelievingTheirOwnLies: During Sakura's infamous fake love confession, her tone implies that she is trying to make herself believe it as well, something that Naruto almost immediately saw and called her out for.
* BoisterousBruiser: While Sakura in her off-time is loud and easily excitable, she applies that same determination and energy in battle, making her a dangerous enemy.
* BrickJoke: Early in Part I it is revealed that Sakura was called "Billboard Brow" as a child. Close to the end of Part II, as a teenager, she learns to use the Strength of a Hundred Seal, which manifests on her forehead.
* BreakHisHeartToSaveHim: This was Sakura's true intentions when she gave her infamous [[FalseConfession fake love confession]] to Naruto in Chapter 469, hoping that he wouldn't keep hurting himself for her and Sasuke. It didn't work out the way she wanted it to and she nearly lost her life for it. Hell, when Naruto [[WhatTheHellHero called her bluff]] and [[ShipSinking rejected her outright]], she spends the first few pages of Chapter 470 losing her temper and going as far as calling him out for thinking that she was faking it. However, once she realized that nobody believed her, she left and proceeded to move forward with the plan to kill Sasuke.
* BreakTheCutie: When it comes to her teammates, particularly when [[SingleTargetSexuality Sasuke]] becomes a criminal during the Five Kage Summit Arc.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Gentle Girl to Sasuke's Brooding Boy, although she's often angry, but is usually friendly and cheerful. She is also the first one to notice Sasuke's growing darkness, and the only girl in the series to express sincere concern about where his path of darkness will lead him.
* TheBully: While not the typical form of this trope, Sakura was quite dismissive and hostile towards [[TheHero Naruto]] for no reason other than her parents' mysterious warning to stay away from him, and his interfering with her crush on Sasuke. Fortunately, [[CharacterDevelopment she gradually stops being this way]], notably after her team's ordeal in the Forest of Death, and [[TookALevelInKindness later becomes]] one of [[TrueCompanions his most loyal friends]].
* CantCatchUp: Sakura starts out as the Team 7 member with the best handling of fundamentals, but Naruto and Sasuke quickly surpass her. This is PlayedForDrama in her fight against Team Dosu, leading to Sakura cutting her long hair and promising not to watch them from the sidelines anymore. She finally catches up to them by the Fourth Shinobi World War, and has remained one of the strongest Konoha shinobi ever since.
* CantLiveWithThemCantLiveWithoutThem: The type of relationship she comes to have with Naruto. Even after becoming nicer to him, it's still comically easy for Sakura's temper to flare and cause her to lash out when it comes to him doing anything that could set her off. Yet, despite her rough attitude towards him, she comes to see him as the little brother she never had and the thought of his struggles or him dying easily brings tears to her eyes and into a state of great panic.
* ChangingYourselfForLove: Prior to getting her ImportantHaircut, Sakura grew out her hair because she heard a rumor that Sasuke liked girls with long hair.
* CharacterDevelopment:
** Goes from initially standing on the sidelines to taking an active role in helping Naruto and Sasuke, especially to bring Sasuke back. Much of her development in Part II is answering the question of how best to accomplish this goal.
** While she starts out as being unkind to Naruto, from the Forest of Death onward, she does her best to stick up for Naruto time and again and becomes one of his closest allies and friends. To put it into perspective: Naruto considers Sasuke to be his best friend, yet it is ''Sakura'' who is consistently doing what she can by his side, [[TheMedic healing him]] and supporting him during their struggles, for almost all of ''Shippuden''.
** Completely symbolized by "Inner Sakura" as well. The character represented all of Sakura's repressed emotions she constantly tried to cover up. "Inner Sakura" disappeared halfway through Part I as she started to be more straightforward about her feelings, and only appeared once in ''Shippuden'' as a gag.
** She had something of an ego at the beginning, but as the series continued, she instead gained HeroicSelfDeprecation.
** In the fight against Madara, she acknowledges that even if she CantCatchUp to her teammates, she can still do her part and [[HeroicSacrifice charges him to provide a distraction]] for Naruto and Sasuke to do their thing rather than just sit there and do nothing.
** [[{{Inverted|Trope}} Inverted because the development isn't always for the best]]. Sakura always has the bad habit of thinking she knows better than the people around her, to the point that she disregards their input completely, which often leads to disastrous results:
*** The development to not stay on the sidelines brings this quality more forward as she would later drug her entire team because she wanted to face Sasuke alone, and she knew they would try to stop her from going on what's essentially a suicide mission, instead of working together as a team. To put in perspective with the above, yes she does try to provide a distraction, but she plans this out only a few feet away from Naruto and Sasuke and makes '''no''' attempt at all to let them in on the plan or to ask what they think. They're just as surprised as Madara was by the distraction, and when she's ''immediately'' defeated, [[DamselInDistress they both have to jump in to save her]]. So she was as every bit as distracting to ''her own team'' as she was to her target. Her failed attempt to distract Madara proves to be more of a LeeroyJenkins moment than a HeroicSacrifice.
*** Likewise, while she isn't repressing "Inner Sakura" anymore, "Inner Sakura" was her angry, violent, and jealous emotions personified. Instead of repressing and controlling those emotions, she expresses them by shouting at and punching people, along with being incredibly condescending and more sensitive to guilt and shame. In all cases, Naruto is often the unfortunate target.
* CharacterExaggeration: In the anime, Sakura's {{Tsundere}} characteristics gets exaggerated for the sake of humor, much to the disdain of the majority of her fans, since her {{Tsundere}} traits in the manga died down during the TimeSkip.
* CharacterTics: Shoving her hair in her face when feeling a strong emotion.
* CherryBlossomGirl: Named Sakura, check. Pink hair, check. Healing powers, check. Associated with love, check. Traditional Japan, check - ikebana and being, well, a ninja. Born in early spring (March 28th), check. Spring-themed, see MeaningfulName below.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: She marries and has a daughter with [[spoiler:Sasuke, her childhood crush and [[SingleTargetSexuality the only man she ever loved]]]].
* TheClan: She's not from any clan whatsoever. Instead, she come from an ordinary and mostly unknown family who never made an appearance in the manga and have only appeared in the anime {{Filler}}. Later on, though, she marries into the Uchiha clan.
* ClothingDamage: Becomes an unusually frequent victim of it during the battle with [[spoiler:Kaguya]]. First, her headband falls off and plops into a pit of lava, melting away. Then, [[spoiler:Obito opens up the wrong dimension]] and a wave of deadly acid douses her flak jacket, forcing her to ditch it before the whole thing- thick metal plates inside included- gets completely eaten away. Sakura also shreds off a sleeve of her combat uniform that was exposed to the acid as well.
* ColorMotifs: Sakura is represented by two colors: Pink (given her hair color and her first name "sakura" meaning "cherry blossom" are pink flowers) and red (the color of her outfits throughout the series).
* CombatMedic:
** With her chakra control, she can heal injuries (either hers or others') and extract poison... and pulverize the earth with SuperStrength.
** HealingHands with gloves to protect them in battle. During the war arc it's revealed that she has mastered Tsunade's Strength of a Hundred technique, giving her a HealingFactor like Tsunade and (reputedly) Hashirama.
* CombatPragmatist:
** Her entire fighting style is this. Her punches may not be the most flashy, but one hit and you're mist. And even then she adds poison to her weapons and is willing to play dead to catch opponents off guard.
** This was best shown in the Five Kage Summit arc. She knew that she, Lee, Kiba and Sai didn't have the power to kill Sasuke head on, so she instead tried to pretend she was going to join Sasuke's side and kill him when his guard was down. And after failing once, she still tried and nearly killed him but failed ''again'' because [[SingleTargetSexuality she still loves him]].
* CommonalityConnection: Her and Naruto's shared bond with Sasuke is one of the main reasons she and Naruto develop a [[FireForgedFriends strong]] [[TrueCompanions friendship]] over the course of the series.
* ControlFreak: At times, especially when it comes to her emotional spot: her teammates, [[LikeBrotherAndSister Naruto]] and [[SingleTargetSexuality Sasuke]]. One of the best examples can be during the Five Kage Summit arc, where thanks to Sai, she was driven by overwhelming guilt and shame to the point where she resolved to take care of the situation herself.
* CoolBigSis: ''The Last'' has Sakura acting as a surrogate one to both [[TwiceShy Naruto and Hinata]], especially in helping Hinata reach her affections to Naruto, and then helping Naruto recognize [[spoiler:the depth of Hinata's love for him to snap him out of his HeroicBSOD]].
* CovertPervert:
** It goes back as early as the Chunin Exams. In Chapter 46, she loudly tells Naruto to go behind a tree if he has to use the bathroom in the Forest of Death, but "Inner Sakura" indicates that she might want to see Sasuke, the boy she likes, pee. And she's a closet YaoiFangirl.
** Also, it's been shown more than once that [[DistractedByTheSexy the Sexy Jutsu]] works perfectly fine on her. Even during ''the heat of battle with a goddess'':
--->'''Sakura''': Idiooooot!!! How can you use such a jutsu in this situation!? OK for me, but how can you think that'd work on a god like that?!
* CoyGirlishFlirtPose: On Sasuke.
* CPRCleanPrettyReliable: She performs CPR on [[spoiler: Naruto in order to keep him alive after Yang-Kurama is extracted. This was explicitly noted to be a stop-gap measure until they could seal the other half of Kurama into him]]. Sakura even uses a different medical technique, internal cardiac massage -- i.e., cutting the patient open and massaging the heart by hand, [[TruthInTelevision which was actually one way to do CPR in real life before it was invented]].
* CraterPower: One of her taijutsu techniques, called Cherry Blossom Impact, involves punching the ground hard enough to send chunks of earth sailing through the air like flower petals. Her Strength of a Hundred Seal amps that up.
* CuteBruiser: She learns earth-shattering SuperStrength from Tsunade by the time Part II starts. While she's primarily TheMedic, she makes use of her chakra control skills by building up chakra in her fists and releasing it all at once. She first demonstrates this ability by smashing the ground open in Chapter 246.
* ADayInTheLimelight: ''Sakura Hiden: Thoughts of Love, Riding Upon a Spring Breeze'', a light novel that focuses on Sakura, after the Fourth Shinobi World War.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Sakura is initially dismissive and hostile towards Naruto, mostly because of the parents in the Leaf Village, including her own parents, telling her to stay away from him. After [[WhatTheHellHero getting called out]] by Sasuke for this in Chapter 3 and during their ordeals in the Chunin exams, she becomes nicer towards him.
* DeliberatelyDistressedDamsel: In ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'', she [[spoiler:doesn't fight back after she's kidnapped by Shin Uchiha Sr. Instead, she watches him perform transplant surgery on himself, all the while discussing with him his motives. Turns out, information was all she wanted: as soon as she got everything, she prepares to punch her way out of this]].
* DemotedToExtra: She has a minor role in ''Anime/BorutoNarutoTheMovie'' and both the manga and anime of ''Manga/{{Boruto}}''.
* {{Determinator}}: Case in point, the spoiler listed under CPR. Your teammate's heart has stopped? Cut open his chest with chakra and keep it pumping yourself.
-->'''Sakura''': Always acting like a fool who only knows one thing... Hokage, Hokage. I'm sorry Naruto... [[CondescendingCompassion that impossible dream of yours]]... I don't want to see it crushed!
* DevotedToYou: To [[SingleTargetSexuality Sasuke]]. When she confesses her love to him in Chapter 181, she outright admits that she'll abandon Team 7, her family, her friends, and the village, and even tells him that she'll help him take his revenge, as long as he stays with her. She still loves him even after he tried to kill her twice when they're enemies, and she remains loyal to him even after he leaves her behind in Konoha to {{Walk The Earth}} following his definitive HeelFaceTurn.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Sakura's attempts to protect Naruto and Sasuke her way and by herself during the Five Kage Summit Arc, no matter the cost, out of immense desperation and guilt, comes off as this. Because it ultimately leads to nearly disastrous consequences, namely getting herself, Kakashi, and Naruto killed by a bloodthirsty Sasuke.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: She punches out Kaguya when Kaguya tries to avoid Naruto and Sasuke's attempt to seal her, hitting Kaguya so hard that one of her horns snaps off. {{Downplayed|Trope}} because the only reason she was able to punch Kaguya at all is because Kaguya was distracted; previously, Kaguya ignored her upfront.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Any time Naruto annoys her she clobbers him with her SuperStrength. This aspect of her character [[CharacterDevelopment gets toned down in Part II of the series]], ([[{{Flanderization}} not so much in the anime fillers]]) but it does still pop up from time to time. Then again, we never see her dealing Naruto any life-threatening injuries (unlike what Tsunade did to Jiraiya), so it seems to be PlayedForLaughs or ComedicSociopathy, unless you count how she indirectly got him cut by ''[[NiceJobBreakingItHero her own poisoned kunai]]''.
* DistressBall: She picks it up when it comes to dealing with Sasuke.
* DitzyGenius: From time to time, mostly in Part I. Case in point: during Kakashi's bell test, she comes across Sasuke after one of Kakashi's techniques left him buried up to his neck in the ground. She promptly panics, assumes Sasuke has been reduced to a talking head, and passes out.
-->'''Sasuke''': "And ''that's'' my partner?"
* DoggedNiceGirl: Towards Sasuke in Part I, prior to her CharacterDevelopment.
* DopeSlap: As a common {{Tsundere}}, she's quite fond of giving Naruto, Sai or even Konohamaru a good thwack over the head whenever they does or says something annoying or idiotic, even by accident... which is quite often. Again this mostly happens in {{filler}}s.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Her {{Megaton Punch}}ing Naruto and being incredibly condescending towards him, especially in {{Filler}} where she knocks him around for no clearly defined reason for comedic purposes, would not be acceptable if the genders were reversed.
* DoubleThink: During her fake confession to Naruto, when she talks negatively about Sasuke and the promise between herself and Naruto, her tone implies that she is trying to force herself to believe what she is saying when, in reality, she is still very much in love with Sasuke, which Naruto notices.
* DudeMagnet: Gets four men to develop feelings for her over the course of the manga. Plus [[SingleTargetSexuality she's the only girl Sasuke has ever shown any romantic interest in]] and [[spoiler:he eventually marries her]].
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[SingleTargetSexuality She only loves Sasuke]], and [[spoiler:she finally gets the man of her dreams. They eventually marry sometime after the end of the manga]].
* EasilyForgiven:
** Subverted in Shippuden, as it's not until Sasuke apologizes near the ''end'' of the series that she actually accepts what he has to say, even being willing but not really to try and kill Sasuke when it seems saving him is no longer an option.
** Played straight in Gaiden. She holds nothing against Sasuke being an absent parent and husband for ten years of her life, even covering for him at the cost of damaging her relationship with Sarada, her daughter. That said, it's implied the arrangement was something Sakura and Sasuke mutually agreed on.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Grows out her hair while trying to woo Sasuke, until her ImportantHaircut.
* ExtremeDoormat: Towards Sasuke in Part I. Not all the time, but it gets more pronounced as his behavior gets worse, and because she was a 12-13 year old deeply in love at the time, probably had no idea what to do about it.
* FacialMarkings: During the battle against the Ten-Tails, having stored up chakra for over three years, Sakura obtained a rhombus mark on her forehead similar Tsunade's, known as the Strength of a Hundred Seal, which since being released has permanently remained in the center of her forehead.
* FatalFlaw: Sakura's character development in the intense world of ninjas highlights the struggles of being one of the most humanized characters. Despite her growth, she still faces challenges.
** Sometimes, she believes that she is the only one who knows what is right and wrong, which can cause her to ignore others. She can be difficult to deal with when this is combined with her stubbornness, temper, passive-aggressive behavior, and selective hearing.
** She feels guilty because she is very in touch with her emotions, but sometimes struggles to control them, leading her to make impulsive decisions. She is particularly sensitive and emotional when it comes to Naruto and Sasuke. This can also cause her to withhold information, so Kakashi may not always share everything.
* FauxActionGirl: Out of all the kunoichi in the series, Sakura suffers from this the most, largely because she's constantly compared to Naruto and Sasuke, whose random power-ups become downright gratuitous towards the end, whereas she is mostly relegated by Kishimoto himself to cheering for them from the sidelines, crying and relying on them, and distracting the enemy solely to give them a chance to do all the fighting. It doesn't help that she never informs her team of any of her plans and she ignores anyone who tells her ''not'' to do something, [[DamselInDistress which constantly forces them to save her]].
%%Moderator notice: This is enough context for Sakura's entry. Do not add further examples of her or any of the Kishimoto interviews. They are not relevant.%%
* TheFinickyOne: During her teenage years, Sakura is known to be rather rigid, and her sense of humor is practically non-existent. She could be quite temperamental at times, especially regarding her [[CantLiveWithThemCantLiveWithoutThem complicated relationship]] with Naruto. However, as she grew older, she became more relaxed and began to let her guard down.
* FireForgedFriends: With Naruto; at first she thought Naruto was annoying, but started to admire him after she saw his determination.
* FirstGirlWins: She is [[spoiler:Sasuke's]] first female teammate, and [[spoiler:he marries her in the end]].
* FlowerMotif: Sakuras (cherry blossoms), of course.
* ForeheadOfDoom: She was bullied as a little girl because of it. Try mocking it now, and expect to grow accustomed to the imprint of her fist on your noggin.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Choleric: Extroverted, analytical, assertive, generous and lively.
* ForYourOwnGood: Sakura seems to firmly believe this (along with ToughLove) when concerning others, ''especially'' Naruto. She tends to believe that only she knows right from wrong to the point of patronizingly blocking others out. When it combines with her GuiltComplex, it has led to disastrous results.
* FriendToAllChildren: Sakura has shown a soft spot for children. ''[[Literature/NarutoHiden Sakura Hiden]]'' has her setting up a clinic for children after the Fourth Shinobi World War.
* GenerationXerox: Not quite to the same extent as Naruto or Sasuke, so it's {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Yet she does have a couple of examples.
** She is very similar to Kushina personality-wise, as stated by Kushina's husband Minato. Both have {{Hair Trigger Temper}}s, both are a bit too willing to punch people, both having a VerbalTic when they're excited (Kushina's "Dattebane" and Sakura's "Shannaro"), and both have done similar poses to each other. Both Kushina and Sakura were bullied as children and hated a feature of theirs; Sakura, her forehead and Kushina, her hair. They had similar relationships to Naruto and Minato respectively, both Sakura and Kushina and didn't respect their male classmate at first due to their first impressions, until Naruto and Minato proved them wrong. '''However''', Sakura is quite intelligent and was a ShrinkingViolet as a child, while Kushina was always a bit dull and pretty violent (considering she was where Naruto got his personality and intelligence from). Sakura never suffered from the same ordeals as Kushina had to. Sakura never shared the same dreams as Kushina. Sakura was a Sasuke-{{fangirl}} in the beginning prior to her CharacterDevelopment, while Kushina never once was. Sakura is a {{deconstruction}} of AllGirlsWantBadBoys with Sasuke, while Kushina was a SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan with Minato. According to the anime, Sakura is a LethalChef, while Kushina was a [[SupremeChef supreme one]]. [[spoiler:Sakura doesn't end up with Naruto because [[SingleTargetSexuality she always loved Sasuke]] and she and Naruto were [[LikeBrotherAndSister more like siblings]] than anything else. Instead, [[ShipperOnDeck she helps Naruto in his relationship with Hinata]], just like [[TeamMom any supportive mother]] would]].
** She also has this with her mentor, Tsunade for some of the same reasons as Kushina, namely temper, somewhat protective tendencies, talent for healing, and brains.
** Sakura Haruno also shares a lot of similarity with Rin Nohara, Mikoto Uchiha, Mebuki Haruno and other characters. It can be said that Sakura Haruno is a normal girl in the story.
* GirlyBruiser: A socially conscious fangirl who is loud and abrasive. It starts out as her "Inner Sakura" side in Part I.
* GoodIsNotNice: She is a good person and does have good intentions, but at times she can be a really nasty grump, ''especially'' towards Naruto.
* GoodParents: [[spoiler:She is this to Sarada. It's because of all the good she did in raising Sarada that Sarada gains the incentive to save her]].
* HairTriggerTemper: There are times, particularly in the anime, when it is incredibly difficult to determine what triggers her explosive and dangerous rage, which is unfortunately often directed at Naruto.
* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler:With Sasuke]].
* TheHeart: In Part I, she acted as a somewhat rational mediator between Naruto and Sasuke, balancing their contrasting personalities to prevent conflicts. In Part II, she fulfilled a similar role for Naruto and Sai, but it became less significant and was eventually phased out as Sai and Naruto developed a better relationship. Unfortunately, her own personal issues and habits compromised her effectiveness in both cases.
* HeartbrokenBadass: After Sasuke leaves the village for his revenge.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: She feels horribly guilty for not being strong enough, or not doing enough for her teammates Naruto and Sasuke. She's the only one who thinks that though, InUniverse at least. It becomes something of a FatalFlaw as the story goes on as it has led to some life-endangering mistakes for Sakura and her comrades.
* HeroismWontPayTheBills: Despite being one of four people directly responsible for saving the world, Sakura hadn't finished paying off the loan on her house by the time ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'' starts.
* HopeSpot: Chapter 631 seemed to be this for Sakura. Sasuke is back on their side again, and the original Team 7 is back. But it quickly turns out that [[HazyFeelTurn Sasuke isn't fully on their side]] and she knows it.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter:
** {{Zigzagged|Trope}}. At first, Sasuke could do no wrong in her eyes. She gradually loses the rose-colored glasses and sees the [[AntiHero real]] [[RevengeBeforeReason him]], although that doesn't stop her from gushing over him. Even after he [[FaceHeelTurn left the Leaf]], she still tries to believe he'll change, despite plenty of evidence to the contrary.
** She can also be this with Naruto. Even after she became nicer to him, she ''always'' maintained the bad habit of being incredibly condescending towards a lot of people, ''especially'' Naruto. This has led to her lying to him about important issues, particularly when it came to Sasuke. This also led to her infamous [[FalseConfession fake love confession]], which, despite her good intentions, was ''dripping'' with condescension.
** Strangely, this goes for herself too. When it comes to her feelings, especially when something or someone she cares about is involved in some situation, she becomes a little too focused on how she should act to resolve it, but underestimated how limited she is physically or how she is often easily ruled by her emotions, to the point it can cause her to hesitant or rash at critical moments, putting herself in grave danger.
* HotBlooded: "Inner Sakura" certainly was. Sakura of ''Shippuden'' seems to be as well, at least in reaction to Naruto.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Despite her considerable efforts and intentions, Sakura's words and actions don't always match up with each other, which is played both for humor and drama:
** When Team 7 first came together, Sakura echoed the view of the other villagers that Naruto was useless and dead weight. However, as Sasuke pointed out, Sakura herself was the one holding the team back. Upon realizing this, she became kinder towards Naruto and made an effort to become stronger by training under Tsunade. In the end, though, [[CantCatchUp she was still unable to match]] [[OvershadowedByAwesome Naruto and Sasuke in terms of power]].
** Sakura often berates Naruto for his pervertedness, though as revealed by Konohamaru, she is a CovertPervert who thinks GuyOnGuyIsHot.
** Sakura frequently scolds Naruto for not being able to control his emotions, but as shown by her actions during the Five Kage Summit arc she herself is prone to letting her emotions cloud her thoughts--especially when it comes to [[SingleTargetSexuality Sasuke]] and [[LikeBrotherAndSister Naruto]]--and was almost killed as a result.
* HypocriticalHeartwarming: She's not afraid to make snide remarks about Naruto, particularity about her opinion of him as a idiot, but when others do it, even Sasuke (on a more Downplayed level), she gets vicious and nasty in her outbursts towards them. Same can be said for Sasuke.
* ImportantHaircut: She cuts her long hair off as a symbol of her new resolve. Conveniently, it's also to free herself from three Sound Genin, who wanted to kill the incapacitated Sasuke and Naruto.
* InformedAbility: {{Downplayed|Trope}} to 'potential ability'. Kakashi referred to her as a 'genjutsu type' ninja, which doesn't necessarily mean she's an expert at genjutsu. It likely refers to her advanced ability with chakra control, seeing as how something like genjutsu, which manipulates the chakra of the opponent, would require precise control. She ''could'' become an expert, but instead went the medic route.
** Played Straight in ''The Last'': it appears that this observation about Sakura was actually meant to convey that she's good at ''dispelling'' genjutsu as opposed to casting it.
** Much attention is drawn early in part 2 to how she was trained to excel at dodging attacks, since a medical ninja's priority in a fight has to be avoiding getting injured themselves and thus being rendered unable to heal teammates, and she displays this well against Sasori. However, over the course of the rest of the series she routinely takes hits without even an effort to dodge, or in many cases has to be pulled out of the way/saved by other people from attacks she is depicted as being helpless to avoid. The anime mitigates this by giving her more scenes where she does dodge things.
** The character often uses genjutsu in games.
* InformedFlaw: When she faints after [[ItMakesSenseInContext destroying her (and Sarada's) own house]]. Shizune then says that Sakura "used to faint often when she was younger", while we have only seen her faint ''twice'' in all the manga, [[OnceDoneNeverForgotten both during the test to become Kakashi's trainee]].
* InnocentlyInsensitive: In Chapter 3, she remarks to Sasuke that she believes Naruto is such a BrattyHalfPint because [[KickTheDog he had no parents]] to teach him how to behave. Needless to say, Sasuke, who had his entire family ''slaughtered'', does '''not''' take it well and [[WhatTheHellHero promptly calls her out on her comments]].
* InsultFriendlyFire: She insults Naruto for being an orphan, claiming that his bratty nature is because he has no parents to discipline him. She says this right in front of Sasuke, who's parents were slaughtered by his older brother, who promptly snaps and chews her out for it.
* InsufferableGenius: Her intelligence, especially in academics, is a great source of pride for her, which can make her emotionally off-putting at times, especially with Naruto, though still came to care about him.
* {{Irony}}: She was bullied because of her large forehead. Yet, after befriending Ino and developing feelings for Sasuke, she became a bully herself (albeit unintentionally), especially towards Naruto, who had ''far'' worse issues than her.
** She grew her hair long because she heard Sasuke liked girls with long hair, and Kin even [[JerkassHasAPoint calls her out on how she paid more attention to her looks than working on her skills as a kunoichi.]] Turns out that if Sakura had dedicated more time to becoming stronger, [[AmazonChaser Sasuke would have far preferred that]] to the GirlyGirl she was trying to be for him.
* IWillWaitForYou: Her relationship with Sasuke in a nutshell. It even expands to [[spoiler:their marriage]].
* JerkassRealization: In Chapter 3, she confides in Sasuke that she believes that Naruto became such an undisciplined prankster because he had no parents to teach him how to behave, at which point Sasuke, who knows from personal experience that [[ParentalAbandonment not having parents]] sucks, promptly berates her and tells her that she has no idea what she's talking about, coldly telling her she's annoying and walking away. Having [[IronicEcho treated Naruto much the same earlier]], Sakura is taken aback and resolves to try and treat him better (with varying degrees of success thanks to her temper and Naruto's tendency to get on her nerves).
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Early on, she looks down on Naruto, and lets her temper get the best of her when it comes to him. In Part II, she ends up admitting to actually look up to him. She still [[DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale dishes out the punishment]] when Naruto acts like an idiot and/or a pervert, even accidentally, along with anything else that can set her off.
* {{Kiai}}: Sakura likes to hand out her {{Megaton Punch}}es while screaming "SHANNARO!"
* KillTheOnesYouLove: Attempts this to spare Sasuke from falling even lower then he already has, but her unwavering love for him kept her from landing the fatal blow and almost got herself killed as a result twice.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. While Sakura is shown to be wicked booksmart, a top student, and clever during the chunin exams, it is soon revealed that all of these traits are not immediately viable if she is just memorizing texts and not applying them. This is exemplified by her paralyzing fear during the introduction and Land of Waves arc, that even as a shinobi, she still has human responses to fear. So while she knows a lot, its the naivete and lack of experience that makes her a 'know nothing' in comparison to the likes of her teammates. It isn't until her haircut in the Chunin exams, when Sakura TookALevelInBadass in order to fight off the Sound ninja does she begin to grow away from her studious, perfect student mindset and move, even when afraid. Sakura eventually becomes Tsunade's apprentice, defeats an Akatsuki member, take down one of Pein's summonings by herself, and during the last stage of the [[WarArc Fourth Shinobi World War Arc]] keeps up with KCM Naruto ''and'' a Complete Susano'o EMS Sasuke, and is even able to overcome her fear of the Goddess when knocking off one of Kaguya's horn's, temporarily stunning her so that Naruto and Sasuke can seal her away.
** Her high grades and the praise she receives from Kakashi and other jounin alike in part I makes her condescending at times as she explains things to Naruto in a clearly aggitated manner.
* LeeroyJenkins: Sakura, despite her intelligence, can be just as impulsive as Naruto, often making hasty decisions with potentially disastrous consequences. This behavior is reckless, especially considering that she lacks Naruto's extraordinary powers, endurance, and ability to mitigate the drawbacks of her actions. The situation becomes even more precarious when Naruto and Sasuke are involved.
* ALessonLearnedTooWell: Before the Chunin Exams in Part 1, she was quite confident due to being a top student. However, the events of the Chunin Exams humbled her, and as the series progressed, she started to believe that having stable self-confidence was a negative trait. This led to her constantly undervaluing herself, especially in her interactions with Naruto and Sasuke, with detrimental consequences. After facing numerous challenges, it wasn't until adulthood that she realized having stable self-confidence was a positive attribute.
* LightningBruiser: Fully becomes one after completing her [[PowerTattoo Yin Seal]]. She uses her SuperStrength to punch a target, despite it moving at a fast speed, easily keeps pace with it...then smashes it with a tremendous impact.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Officially becomes this with Naruto in ''The Last'' and ''Sakura Hiden'', especially when she gives him advice on his love for [[spoiler:Hinata]]. In retrospect, this can actually be seen throughout the series, where like Tsunade was with Nawaki, their friendship felt more akin to the relationship between an older, well-meaning, though at times overbearing sister and a equally meaning, tall, happy, yet somewhat annoying younger brother.
* TheLoad: For Part I, she admits that she only really stood on the sidelines, and also wound up being a DamselInDistress on at least two occasions. {{Averted|Trope}} at the beginning of Part II, despite the [[MemeticLoser what the majority of the fandom]] likes to think, as she pulled her weight and TookALevelInBadass by studying medical jutsu and attaining super-strength. She ends up feeling like this again by the Fourth Ninja World War, having been overshadowed by Naruto's Six Paths Sage Mode and Sasuke's Complete Body -- Susanoo even after she attains the Strength of a Hundred Seal, though she nevertheless gets the final blow in on Kaguya Ōtsutsuki -- stunning her long enough for Naruto and Sasuke to seal her.
* LoveAtFirstSight: In Chapter 484, [[https://66.media.tumblr.com/04bbdb378d4809c6cd2daa54cdb42d3f/1e844c201090e2cb-f6/s540x810/2a8ba6bb2438bb07c47c5b7ee3ddaed697cc9769.png her flashback]] reveals that she fell in love with Sasuke upon seeing him for the first time in the Academy.
* LoveHurts: Sasuke defecting to learn under [[BigBad Orochimaru]] really hurt her. [[DarkerAndEdgier It didn't get easier]] after the TimeSkip.
* LoveInformant: She takes this role in ''The Last'', as Naruto and Hinata's CoolBigSis and ShipperOnDeck, where she gives Naruto an important pep-talk regarding [[spoiler:Hinata, by telling him that [[SingleTargetSexuality Hinata has only ever loved him]], just like how she herself has only ever loved Sasuke. [[HeroicSecondWind It works]]]].
* LoveMartyr: Despite admitting that she should know better, [[SingleTargetSexuality Sakura loves Sasuke]], no matter what he does. She still loves him even after he has ''tried to kill her''. Even after Kaguya is defeated and he makes it clear that he's going to kill Naruto, she begs him not to "if he ever loved her." This is met with a genjutsu of him shanking her in the heart with a chidori. {{Subverted|Trope}} as [[spoiler:Sasuke deeply apologizes to her, acknowledges her feelings and tells her to wait for him while he goes to WalkTheEarth in order to see it with new eyes]].
* LovingAShadow: Sakura starts out like any other Sasuke-admirer, but later falls in love with him for real after they become teammates and she learns more about him. [[SingleTargetSexuality She remains in love with him]] even after he tries to kill her, because she believes that Naruto can bring him back. When he rejoins the good guys, he continues to treat her like trash, but Sakura still can't stop seeking his approval. When he goes off the deep end again and attacks her, Sakura ''still'' can't let go of her feelings for him, to the point that Sasuke himself says that Sakura has no reason to love him. Even over a decade later, after [[spoiler:marrying him and having a daughter with him]], she's unable to answer incredibly basic questions about him. According to Kishimoto, he deliberately avoided the reasons for why she fell in love with Sasuke because he found all the ideas too [[StrangledByTheRedString contrived]].
* LyingToProtectYourFeelings: Sakura develops a habit of not being completely honest about certain subjects with others if she believes that it will do more harm than good, especially when they involve Naruto and Sasuke, with dire consequences at times. One of the most renowned examples is her infamous fake love confession during the Five Kage Summit arc where, despite her good intentions, it nearly leads to disaster for all of Team 7.
* MaleGaze: Part II seems to like giving attention to her rear. [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakuass.jpg Here's]] [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/assaku2.png the]] [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/assaku.png proof]]. One of the filler endings shows her from behind, wearing a bikini while walking.
* MamaBear: [[spoiler:As Shin Uchiha Sr can attest, you don't mess with her husband and daughter if you want to keep your body in one piece]].
* MamasBabyPapasMaybe: {{Inverted|Trope}}. Very serious questions are raised by her daughter [[spoiler:Sarada]] as to whether Sakura really is her mother, owing to Sakura's complete inability to answer even the most basic of questions about [[spoiler:Sasuke]] and [[spoiler:Sarada's]] noted resemblance to [[spoiler:Karin]]. Chapter 7 of ''Naruto Gaiden'' seemingly confirms that Sakura lied about being [[spoiler:Sarada's]] mother, but the final chapter reveals that [[SubvertedTrope Sakura really is her mother]].
* MeaningfulName: Haruno means "of the spring," and Sakura is Japan's famous cherry blossom tree which sprouts its distinctive pink flowers in the spring and which are the same color as her hair.
* MarsAndVenusGenderContrast: According to Kishimoto, Sakura was designed as a character who struggles to comprehend men and their motivations, similar to how Naruto struggles with understanding women and romantic affection. When Naruto's unrequited love for her was explained to her by Sai, she finally began to take it seriously, although they both went about resolving the issue in an incorrect manner with improper mindsets.
* MeaningfulRename: Later she goes on to take [[spoiler:the Uchiha surname upon marrying Sasuke]].
* MegatonPunch: Her favorite method as a {{Tsundere}}, when it comes to anything or anyone that gets on her nerves, mainly and unfortunately for Naruto.
* TheMedic: Due to her training by Tsunade, she is one of the best at the age of 15.
* MoralityPet: To Sasuke. This was constantly [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-Zagged]] throughout the series, because his desire for revenge and powers was more important than her feelings. However, it was finally played straight at the end; it was first shown by [[HeelFaceTurn his genuine apology to her for his selfishness]]. Later, in ''[[Literature/SakuraHidenThoughtsOfLoveRidingUponASpringBreeze Sakura Hiden]]'', Konoha manages to contact Sasuke and request his assistance to help against an enemy who wants to attack Konoha, but he turns them down, as he believes it does not concern him. However, once he finds out that the enemies have captured Sakura, [[AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther he immediately rushes home]].
* MsExposition: In the first arc she explained things essential to the verse like how chakra works.
* MumLooksLikeASister: In ''Anime/BorutoNarutoTheMovie'', her character design makes her look young enough to pass as her daughter's older sister, particularly as she lacks the curves that her adult self possesses.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: As a result of chakra providing the force behind her blows.
* MyGreatestFailure: How she felt towards being unable to stop Sasuke from turning his back on the village, especially after Shikamaru refused to let her come along on the mission to retrieve him. Also how she felt when healing Naruto, after his match with Orochimaru.

* {{Narcissist}}: In Part I, she initially prefers to maintain her looks while swooning over Sasuke and belittling Naruto instead of practicing her ninja skills. [[WhatTheHellHero Sasuke calls her out for it]]. After her ImportantHaircut, she gradually outgrows this.
* NavelWindow: In adulthood, she seems fond of wearing qipao-style top that splits just high enough above her pants to leave her navel visible in similar fashion to Karin.
* NervousWreck: Sakura has a resolute mindset, and her unwavering determination is a quality that can be highly appreciated in most situations. However, during her teenage years, she struggles with neurotic tendencies that often manifest themselves when dealing with her close teammates, Naruto and Sasuke. Her rigid personality, combined with a lack of humor and a tendency to worry excessively, can sometimes be a recipe for disaster. Her finicky nature makes her difficult to deal with, adding to her already complex disposition.
* NeutralFemale: Sakura is infamous for spending most of the time in battle just standing with a kunai in a defensive position while her teammates do all the actual fighting (it made sense in the Bridge Builder arc because she was left as the only one actually guarding the person they were supposed to be guarding). If they had indicated that she's supposed to be a non-combatant, this would have been more acceptable, but the fact that [[FauxActionGirl she's supposed to be a highly trained ninja]] makes this all the more insulting. It isn't until the first arc after the TimeSkip that [[TookALevelInBadass she becomes more involved in battle]].
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** Despite her good intentions in the Five Kage Summit arc, due to letting her emotions getting the better of her and underestimating Sasuke and the affair concerning him, the only things Sakura managed to do is nearly get herself, Kakashi and Naruto killed--with Naruto from both facing Sasuke and being cut by ''her own'' poisoned kunai that Sasuke tried to used on her when the former saved her.
** In Chapter 674, Obito pleads for Sakura to destroy his Rinnegan eye so that Madara wouldn't be able to take it. She completely hesitates out of fear, resulting in Madara taking back his other eye from Obito and bringing about the beginning of the Infinite Tsukuyomi. The fact that she ''doesn't'' reveal her mistakes to Kakashi when he asks her what happened in the following chapter doesn't help her case.
* NotGoodWithRejection: Sasuke rejecting her AnguishedDeclarationOfLove in Part I really depresses her, sends her to tears, and eventually causes her to make rash decisions, most notably in the Five Kage Summit arc.
* NotHelpingYourCase: On the first chapter of ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'', to an almost tragicomic level. [[spoiler:When her daughter asks if Sasuke ever needed glasses, she don't know. She then tries to hide Sasuke's betrayal of the village by saying that "he was away a lot when he was younger." As Sarada's doubt increases and she even asks if Sakura is really Sasuke's wife, Sakura breaks in a fit of rage. A fit of rage so big that breaks the ground and destroys her own house. Naturally, a lot of things inside the house fall off and break. One of them is a portrait of Sasuke and Sakura. The problem is that it's a montage, and Sarada discovers that there was a photo of Taka (except Jugo) hidden behind the frame. The chapter ends with Sarada looking at the figure of Karin, probably beginning to doubt even if Sakura is her real mother]].
* NoSenseOfHumor: Although she enjoys taking jabs at Naruto's intelligence, as a teen, humor is more likely to set off her temper than it is to grant her enjoyment or relaxation. Her NervousWreck mentality plays a part in her {{Fatal Flaw}}s during her teenage years, leading and/or adding to escalating situations, particularly when Naruto and/or Sasuke are involved. By adulthood, however, she learns to mellow out.
* TheNotLoveInterest: For Naruto, especially in {{Filler}} episodes and most notoriously the {{Filler}} movie ''[[Anime/NarutoTheMovieRoadToNinja Road To Ninja]]''.
* ObliviousToLove: In a weird way. Kishimoto has stated that he fashioned Sakura as a girl who cannot understand men, much like how Naruto says he does not understand women and romantic love. She had to have [[JerkassHasAPoint Sai telling her]] how [[BrutalHonesty Naruto suffered from his one-sided crush on her]] to take it seriously.
* OfficialCouple: With [[spoiler:Sasuke]].
* OhCrap: She has a silent one when she notices [[spoiler:[[PersonOfMassDestruction Kaguya]]]] suddenly standing ''a few feet away from her''.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: In Part I, Sakura would almost always agree with what Sasuke had to say. However, when Sasuke was about to give the scrolls to a disguised Orochimaru during the Chunin Exams, both she and Naruto are shocked. This also led her to giving him the ''first'' TheReasonYouSuckSpeech since they've been a team.
* OppositesAttract: Sakura is the loud, brash healer from an ordinary family who starts the series quite weak, and she loves the calm, broody Uchiha prodigy Sasuke, [[spoiler:who finally reciprocates her feelings at the end of the manga]].
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Downplayed. By the end of the series, Sakura is one of the most powerful kunoichis (or even ninja in general) alive, potentially even more powerful than her teacher Tsunade, but she is still far below Naruto and Sasuke who managed to reach near god-like levels unattainable for her. And since she is often around them she tends to end up faced with opponents she has little chance against. When faced with powerful but still "mundane" enemies she fares much better.
* ParentsAsPeople: Sakura, by all accounts, is a loving parent and supportive mother. [[spoiler: But her inability to openly communicate with her child (and in fairness, Sarada did keep the worst of her doubts to herself) about Sasuke, as well as presenting her with what she thought Sarada would want to see rather than admitting the truth, she inadvertantly causes Sarada to feel alienated and uncertain about herself, something that only increases when she finds a manipulated photo of her and Sasuke together.]]
* PetalPower: In [[{{Filler}} the first movie]], she used a technique called Sakura Blizzard that involved a large number of tiny explosive tags and cherry blossoms mixed in for good measure.
* PinkGirlBlueBoy: The Pink Girl (pink-haired, dresses in pink and red) to Sasuke's Blue Boy (blue-black hair, dresses in shades of deep blue).
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: She cries out "DON'T LEAVE ME!!" to Sasuke when he leaves [[FaceHeelTurn to join Orochimaru]].
* PluckyGirl: See her fights vs Ino (where she deliberately angers Ino to avoid getting sympathy and broke Ino's Mind Switch Jutsu, albeit with a little help from Naruto's cheering) and Sasori (where she got serious injuries ''and kept fighting anyway'').
* PoisonedWeapons:
** Thanks to [[MasterPoisoner Shizune's]] tutelage she has acquired some poisonous weapons and KnockoutGas as well.
** She's also CarryingTheAntidote. She is a medic, after all.
* PoorCommunicationKills: She has this ''in spades'' with the rest of Team 7, and it's often in conjunction with LockedOutOfTheLoop:
** During the second bell test in the Kazekage Rescue arc, Sakura shatters the ground with her [[SuperStrength Cherry Blossom Impact]], something that [[NoGuyWantsAnAmazon makes both Naruto and Kakashi look like they're about to wet their pants]]. While this is PlayedForLaughs, Kakashi clearly had no idea she knew this technique. Considering that both she and Kakashi had been in Konoha for the past three years, this means that Kakashi rarely checked in on her progress, even though she was the only one of his students who was ''still'' in the village during the TimeSkip.
** During her infamous [[FalseConfession fake love confession]] in the Five Kage Summit arc, she withheld from Naruto that the rest of the Konoha 11 had decided to kill Sasuke themselves, and that she herself was taking it on. Then when Kiba tells Sakura to tell Naruto the truth, she stomps on his foot and leaves. In turn, Naruto, Kakashi, and Yamato completely failed to tell her about their meeting with Tobi and the truth behind the Uchiha Massacre, something that might have changed how she approached Sasuke. Though Naruto was about to explain only to stop at Kakashi and Yamato's partly justified insistence in order to avoid further chaos until they knew more.
** During their fight against Madara in the Ten-Tails Retrieval arc, [[LeeroyJenkins Sakura charges in to make a distraction]], in order to give Naruto and Sasuke an opening. This fails in two ways: first, by '''not''' talking about it to her teammates before rushing in, Sakura distracted ''her own team'' more than Madara. Second, despite the minutes they had before Madara's return, Naruto, Sasuke, and Kakashi all neglected to tell Sakura about Madara's shadows, something that might have changed her approach had she known. This is increased later when [[JerkassHasAPoint Sasuke outright says that both she and Kakashi are now useless]] and that the whole fight is in his and Naruto's hands, which is further cemented when [[DumbassHasAPoint Naruto agrees with him]] two chapters later, so there's no point in informing her on what's next.
** Notably, this is ''not'' something she's managed to outgrow by the time of ''Gaiden'', as Sakura's decision to tell Sarada only the bare minimum about her father has left her child with growing uncertainty about her parentage, which only grows once Sakura presented a manipulated photo of herself over the photo of Sasuke with Team Taka. Thanks to Sarada's own example of this trope, this only ends up shaking Sarada's sense of identity so bad she wonders if Karin is her real mother and even has a DNA test to be absolutely sure about who her parents are and severely shaking the bond mother and daughter had.
* PowerTattoo: The Strength of a Hundred Seal, a diamond-shaped mark in her forehead that, when activated, spreads markings across her body and greatly amplifies her strength.
* ProneToTears: When it comes to Naruto and Sasuke, Sakura sheds tears almost as easily as she breathes. As the series continues up to the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War and things grow more dire for her original teammates for multiple reasons, Sakura becomes more of a sobbing wreck.
* RedIsHeroic: One of her ColorMotifs is red, her main outfits consists mainly of red, and she's a heroic CombatMedic.
* RedIsViolent: Red is her signature color, and she can be very rough, especially toward Naruto.
* RelativeButton: Something she has in common with [[TheHero Naruto]]: do '''not''' badmouth [[SingleTargetSexuality Sasuke]] in front of her. If you do, she'll first appear [[TranquilFury calm and collective]], before punching you in the face. Just ask [[BrutalHonesty Sai]].
* ReleasingFromThePromise: Subverted when out of guilt and shame of having hurt Naruto's feelings in the past and fearing that he will die, makes a [[BreakHisHeartToSaveHim false]] [[FalseConfession love confession]] to him in a desperate attempt to release him of his "Promise of a Lifetime" to her: [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy bringing back the guy she loves, Sasuke, to her]]. Naruto sees right through her fake confession, [[WhatTheHellHero calls her out for lying]], tells her that he '''hates''' people who lie to themselves, and says that even if she releases him from his promise, ''he'' has [[TrueCompanions his own reasons]] for wanting Sasuke to come back.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red to Hinata's Blue. Whereas Hinata is a {{Shy Blue Haired|Girl}} NiceGirl who can barely talk to Naruto [[CharacterDevelopment until Part II]], Sakura is a HotBlooded rose-haired {{Tsundere}} who is ready to inflict [[DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale unnecessary damage]] on Naruto. By Part II, even their fighting styles became total opposites to each other's: they both use chakra, but Sakura is using it to increase the strength of her punches to [[SuperStrength monstrous levels]], making her a CuteBruiser, whereas Hinata is using the PressurePoint-based Gentle Fist-style of the Hyuga clan, making her a LadyOfWar. Furthermore, as a result of their respective personalities and body figures, Sakura has ACupAngst whereas Hinata is [[HiddenBuxom hiding her buxom figure in baggy clothes]]. Also, according to the anime, Sakura is a LethalChef whereas Hinata is a [[SupremeChef supreme one]].
* RomanticFalseLead: As Kishimoto has stated in several post-series interviews, she was ''always'' going to be this to Naruto, even as far back as the early stages of the manga. Not that it matters, since [[SingleTargetSexuality she always loved Sasuke]] and only ever saw Naruto as [[LikeBrotherAndSister a teammate and younger brother]].
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Loud, cheerful Energetic Girl to cold, silent Sasuke's Savvy Guy.
* SeenItAll:
** After going through all the god level craziness of Obito, Madara [[spoiler:and Kaguya]] during the Fourth Shinobi World War, she is not even fazed by seeing [[spoiler:the Sage of the Six Paths in person]].
** In the New Era, she isn't surprised by [[spoiler:Shin]] getting betrayed by his clones and having his philosophy turned against him, given what happened to previous villains like Obito and Madara.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** It's {{Implied|Trope}} that she supports Naruto/Hinata in Chapter 80, when she happily agrees with Lee that [[BirdsOfAFeather Naruto and Hinata are very similar to each other]]. By ''The Last'', she becomes the full-fledged captain of the pairing, as shown by her encouraging Hinata to give Naruto the [[RedStringOfFate red scarf]] she knitted for him, and then helping Naruto realize that Hinata [[spoiler:didn't actually reject him because Hinata always loved him]], which helps Naruto get his HeroicSecondWind. She also doubles as TheMatchmaker in ''VideoGame/NarutoShippudenUltimateNinjaStorm4''.
** Also in ''Ultimate Ninja Storm 4'', Sakura is shown thinking that Shikamaru and Temari make a good couple.
* ShrinkingViolet: Only as a child.
* SingleTargetSexuality: She never developed romantic feelings for any other man except one: Sasuke Uchiha. Even though his FaceHeelTurn hurts her so much, and even though she goes back and forth between wanting him to return or wanting to kill him, overall she cannot bring herself to stop loving him.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan:
** {{Subverted|Trope}} and {{Exploited|Trope}} with Naruto. In Chapter 469, she makes a [[FalseConfession blatantly fake love confession]] to Naruto that lists all of the reasons why he is better for her and Sasuke isn't, so that she could play into [[LovingAShadow his one-sided shallow crush on her]] and get him to stop chasing Sasuke for her. However Naruto sees right through her, because he knows that [[SingleTargetSexuality she only loves Sasuke]], [[ShipSinking rejects her outright]], and says his promise to her is not the sole reason he wants to rescue Sasuke, but for [[TrueCompanions his own reasons]].
** Played Straight with [[spoiler:Sasuke]] at the end of the manga, who makes his definitive HeelFaceTurn after Naruto finally knocks some sense into him and he becomes TheAtoner.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. Yes, [[SingleTargetSexuality she loves Sasuke]], but her feelings have brought her ''many'' problems, considering how she can't let go of her feelings despite knowing that he's too far gone. This also doubles as LoveMakesYouDumb. On the other hand, given that Sasuke actually tries to kill her twice when they're enemies, it's rather bizarre that her crush survives into adulthood. [[spoiler:They even become an OfficialCouple and have a daughter together]].
* {{Squee}}: During Team 7's introduction to Kakashi, when asked about the things she likes, she squees [[SingleTargetSexuality while looking at Sasuke]].
* StepfordSmiler: Sports one identical to Sai's when asked if Sasuke can be trusted after his HazyFeelTurn.
* StoneWall: By the end of the series, much like her mentor. Taijutsu against her would be suicidal, except for the very few who could block her super strength, and she could just instantly heal off any damage done by ninjutsu. Even more so in adulthood, as it's been stated that, by then, she finished training to resist genjutsu, meaning that literally the only way to kill her is by outlasting her (rather large, thanks to her Yin seal) chakra reserve. Not that she's particularly slow, she isn't, but it's not her forte and the speed training she has, like for all medics, is for ''avoiding'' hits.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She has her mother's facial features, but her father's pink hair.
* SummonMagic: Slugs.
* SurpassedTheTeacher: By the end of the series, she is considered stronger than Tsunade.
* SuperStrength: During the TimeSkip, Tsunade teaches her to use a specialized version of this, allowing for a powerful strike. Especially when she uses the [[PowerTattoo Strength of a Hundred Seal]].
* TearsOfJoy: When Sasuke [[HeelFaceTurn sincerely apologizes for all the ruckus he caused]] in the penultimate chapter. She responds with this:
-->'''Sakura''': [[{{Forgiveness}} You'd better damn well be]]... Shannaro... [[YouFool You jerk]]...
* TeenGenius: Before the TimeSkip, being a good student with precise chakra control and enough knowledge to ''not'' need cheating in the written part of the Chuunin exams differentiated her from any other kunoichi. Afterwards, it's what makes her such a good apprentice and medic.
* ThisLoserIsYou: Kishimoto has stated that both she and Rock Lee were meant to symbolize human weakness.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Sakura's loud, abrasive, and generally tomboyish, but as shown in Part I, she's also a huge romantic who is very conscious about her social standing, leading to her trying to put on a more girly pretense in front of Sasuke.
* TookALevelInBadass: Feeling she was a burden to the team and that she was weak compared to Naruto and Sasuke, Sakura spent the time-skip between Part I and Part II/''Shippuden'' studying medical jutsu under Tsunade. As a result, she became able to greatly augment her strength -- to the point she can create massive earthquake-like shockwaves with simple taijutsu attacks. Coupled with her embracing her fiery temper, this led to her becoming a more active and competent combatant, though even when she attained the Strength of a Hundred Seal she still wound up [[OvershadowedByAwesome being overshadowed by Naruto and Sasuke]].
* TookALevelInKindness: It starts at the beginning of the Chunin Exams arc, continues all the way to the end, and is cemented in Part II, essentially towards Naruto.
* ToughLove: Sakura has no qualms about calling someone out (at times rather violently) if she believes they are not behaving properly, especially regarding Naruto. Despite being kinder to him, she still maintains a tough attitude. Unfortunately, she tends to think she is the only one who knows right from wrong, often shutting others out patronizingly. Combining this with her guilt complex often leads to disastrous outcomes.
* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: Sakura is often easily driven by guilt when comes to Sasuke and Naruto, to the point where she acts rashly and makes impulsive choices, with nearly fatal results.
** Sakura's guilt over Naruto's perceived suffering leads to her impulsive actions during the Five Kage Summit arc, from her fake confession to Naruto to trying to face Sasuke alone. This all results in nearly ruining her friendship with Naruto and getting him, Kakashi and herself killed.
** Sakura's impatience in trying to confess her love to Sasuke and unwillingness to listen to her teammates' advice leads to Sasuke explaining that he has no feelings for her in Chapter 693.
* TrainingFromHell: Tsunade subjects her to this during the TimeSkip so that she can develop SuperStrength and [[TheMedic medical ninjutsu]].
%%* TrueCompanions: With Team 7.
* {{Tsundere}}: Primarily in the anime, but it was present in the manga as well, of the tsuntsun version half the time, even if she became a type B after the TimeSkip, unfortunately for Naruto.
* TheUnfavourite: Kakashi's treatment of Sakura within Team 7 is often downplayed. He doesn't seem to dislike her, but rather neglects her. Before the time skip, he focuses on training Sasuke, and after the time skip, he shifts his full attention to Naruto. While this could be justified by Naruto and Sasuke needing extra help in controlling their overwhelming powers, Kakashi never tries to find another mentor for Sakura (though she does find one herself in Tsunade). This neglect seems to be something Kakashi regrets, realizing his own carelessness with his team.
* UnprovokedPervertPayback: Towards Naruto once or twice, but occurs more often in the anime {{Filler}}.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: She fails to destroy Obito's Rinnegan eye, even after he pleaded her to do so, because she completely freezes and hesitates out of fear. This results in Madara taking back his other eye from Obito and subsequently casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
* UseYourHead: Does this against Naruto in episode 372 of Shippuden (chapter 631 of the manga) as a response to him telling Minato that she is his girlfriend.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Smashed Shin Sr Uchiha very hard because he harmed her husband (and their daughter).
* WaifFu: Sakura learns it from Tsunade, who also breaks the ground with simple punches - Tsunade in her true form is actually a frail elderly woman with even less muscle size than Sakura. This SuperStrength is apparently achieved by perfect chakra control.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Instigated this with Ino prior to the beginning of Part I. They resumed their friendship after their DesignatedGirlFight in the Chunin Exams arc.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: {{Invoked|Trope}} by Sasuke out of all people; he bluntly states that she has no reason to love him after all he did.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Apparently the reason for her lacking performance after the first post-TimeSkip arc. She's spent the last three years building up chakra in her forehead like Tsunade does, and it isn't until the battle with the Ten-Tails that she finally has enough to use the technique to augment her abilities.
* YaoiFangirl:
** Just watch her reaction to one of Konohamaru's jutsus that included shadow clones of the naked Sai and Sasuke.
** Her reaction to Naruto’s trump card against Kaguya, the ''male version'' of the Sexy Harem Jutsu, is a severe {{Nosebleed}}.
* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry: Seriously, as others, especially Naruto, have learned the hard way, getting her worked up can be disastrous.

->''[[ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight In the ninja world, those who break the rules are scum, that's true, but those who abandon their comrades are worse than scum]].''

Kakashi Hatake is a sneaky, snarky ninja who serves as sensei of Team 7, and also as TheBigGuy and TheSmartGuy. Prior to Team 7, he had failed ''every single'' applicant who had come before him. He's one of the strongest ninja in Konoha, and is never seen without his dirty pornographic novel/manga.

Kakashi, for reasons that are at first unknown, has a Sharingan in his left eye, despite not being of the Uchiha (In a Gaiden {{prequel}} story, the eye was revealed to have been transplanted from his deceased friend Obito Uchiha, one of Sasuke's relatives). Kakashi has mastered its use about as well as a non-Uchiha can, picking up the epithet "Copy Ninja." He knows dozens of techniques, and has even unlocked a Mangekyo Sharingan that differs from Itachi, although using it puts enormous strain on his body. His only unique jutsu is the Chidori (and its upgraded form, Raikiri), a technique that consists of covering one of his full hands in his lightning-natured chakra, which allows him to cut/stab any target with a single blow.

In ''Shippuden'', Naruto and Sakura's development causes Kakashi to serve less as a mentor and more as a comrade. He still teaches Naruto, though, eventually helping him create a more powerful variant of the Rasengan.

In the Fourth Shinobi World War, he serves as the leader of the Third Division. Later he proved instrumental in the fight against his former comrade Obito, Madara, and the [[TheManBehindTheMan true mastermind behind the war, Kaguya]]. After war's end, Kakashi becomes the Sixth Hokage and by putting his own neck on the line uses his new influence along with Naruto's testimony and the agreement of the other kages to in effect put Sasuke on probation rather than imprisoning or executing him for his crimes. [[Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie Two years later, despite having lost his Sharingan at the end of the war, Kakashi proves himself a great leader by helping citizens on earth stay alive during the course of the movie]]. He also invented a replacement for the now impractical to use Chidori, a jutsu just as powerful but not as fast, called Purple Lightning.

By the time the epilogue rolls by, Kakashi goes into comfortable retirement while [[PassingTheTorch passing on the mantle of Hokage to his student, Naruto]]. He still remains on semi-active duty as a ninja as well, helping out and investigating behind the scenes.

->His hobby is reading (Icha Icha series).
->Favorite word: "Teamwork"
----
* EleventhHourSuperpower: After Obito dies, he's able to grant Kakashi his full Mangekyo Sharingan. This grants Kakashi the use of Obito's IntangibleMan powers, Perfect Susanoo, and the ability to imbue all of his attacks with Kamui so they can PortalCut if they connect. And because Obito was also host to the Ten-Tails, he gets Rikudo's power as part of the deal so his attacks aren't instantly absorbed. [[AwesomeButTemporary He loses this power when Obito finally passes on due to no longer channeling Obito's spirit, as he had already lost his Sharingan to Madara before.]]
* TheAce: He is very likely the most talented shinobi ever produced by the Leaf without any special [[SuperpowerfulGenetics Bloodline Limit]], moving through the ninja ranks even more quickly than prodigies like Itachi. Tsunade and Jiraiya agree that Kakashi is next in line for Hokage as though an afterthought, and he becomes the Sixth Hokage soon after the Fourth Great Ninja War.
* AchillesHeel: Kakashi, while he has an all around awesome skill-set, has massive stamina issues. This is exacerbated by his Sharingan, both from the fact that he can't turn it off and so it leeches away his chakra even when he has it covered and because actively using it is far more draining for him than it would be for an Uchiha. While his stamina does improve over the years, this is partially offset by him learning jutsu that require even more chakra, namely Kamui. Several of his major battles in the series result in him getting bed-ridden for over-expending his energy.
* AfterlifeAntechamber: Ended up in one when he used up the last of his chakra to save Choji from Pain. He got revived but before this happened he had enough time to meet with his long dead father Sakumo, whose regrets had kept him in the same chamber ever since his suicide, and make peace with him. This allowed his father's spirit to finally move on to the afterlife and reunite with his long dead wife.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: That first flashback of him killing Rin turned out to be very misleading. She actually wanted him to do it, but he point-blank refused despite the Mist's plans for her. She took matters into her own hands and jumped in front of his attack.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter:
** He was it for Obito in their childhood... over and over and over...
** He also was this for Guy that in turn caused their FriendlyRivalry.
* AndIMustScream: He was the first in-series victim of the Mangekyo Sharingan's [[MindRape Tsukuyomi]] seen, in which Itachi crucified him and stabbed him repeatedly without letting him die. For what felt like three days. Without stopping...
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: As a kid, he was obsessed with following the rules and living like an obedient toy soldier. Anyone who didn't train themselves to be an ideal ninja was out of step with the rest and a disgrace. It was brought on by a fear that deviating from the shinobi code would lead to ostracism, since his father Sakumo chose to put his comrade's lives above a mission. The Leaf ninja felt betrayed, because it is their master goal to ensure a success of a mission at all costs. Sakumo was chided ''viciously'' by his peers, even those he had saved, and DrivenToSuicide. Kakashi feared the same might happen to him. After Obito brought him to his senses and warned him it would pretty much strip him of his humanity to live like this, he broke out of it.
* AssShove: His [[MundaneMadeAwesome One Thousand Years of Death]] is nothing more than an over-glorified Kanchō, a Japanese prank common among children. That doesn't discredit its effectiveness.
* AuraVision: One of the most standard abilities of the Sharingan is to see Chakra.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Pretty good at figuring out the skills of dangerous opponents such as [[PsychoForHire Zabuza]], [[SoulJar Kakuzu]], [[AGodAmI Pain]] and [[IntangibleMan Tobi]]. Considered to be the best at it by Guy and Naruto.
* BackFromTheDead: Gets killed and later revived by Pain.
* BackToBackBadasses: With Guy. They trust each other implicitly and are familiar with each other's fighting styles, making them a very dangerous combination on the battlefield.
* BadassBoast: ''"The "Copy Ninja" Kakashi, the man who copied one thousand techniques… is about to go on a rampage!"''
* BadassBookworm: Naruto calls him "as smart as [[ImprobablyHighIQ Shikamaru]]", which, combined with his status as the most elite ninjutsu specialist in the Hidden Leaf, would make him this easily. {{Inverted|Trope}} with his actual choice of literature -- Jiraiya's erotic novels.
%%* BadassTeacher: His students certainly think so.
%%* BadassTransplant: His [[MagicalEye Sharingan]](s).
* BattleAura: Gains one when Naruto gives him the refined, combined chakra that he and Kurama made, resulting in a Version 1 cloak. He commented that it's even stronger than the dose that Kurama had given him originally, which increased his power threefold.
* BeneathTheMask: Figuratively and literally.
** During the Third Great Ninja War, he was very arrogant and condescending, even to his sensei when he became a captain, and often belittled Obito when he fell behind or spoke up. But deep down, beneath the condescending exterior, when confronted by Obito about abandoning Rin, Kakashi pauses for a moment and thinks back on his father’s suicide, and warns Obito about what happens to those who don’t follow the Shinobi code. Despite his outward condescension towards him, Kakashi didn’t want Obito to face the same stigma his father suffered.
** As an adult, particularly as a squad leader, he seems a rather quirky, peculiar, tardy teacher who’s usually late to meeting with his squad, but ultimately proves to be a loyal and protective leader. His tardiness and excuses of being late is later revealed to be a cover up for him paying his tributes to his late friend, and former rival, Obito.
* {{BFS}}: Wields Zabuza's Executioner Blade for a short while in the 4th world war against the other Seven Swordsmen.
* BigDamnHeroes: He has a habit of joining fights by showing up out of nowhere to save his comrades.
* BlessedWithSuck: Because he isn't an Uchiha, he can't deactivate the Sharingan and it rapidly drains his chakra whenever he uses it, leaving him bedridden after extended use; he keeps the eye covered when he doesn't need it in order to prevent this. The Mangekyō Sharingan drains a considerable amount of chakra when performed. The eye's usage also places a great strain on Kakashi, wearing him down and causing deterioration of his eye's vision until eventually his eye went blind during the Fourth Shinobi World War.
* BoringYetPractical: His fighting style tends to be this, which is part of why he's overshadowed so much. His summons are a perfect example. Most ninja call up a giant animal to fight for them; Kakashi has a pack of hunting hounds.
* BreakTheHaughty: Happens in ''Kakashi Gaiden'', when he gets the worst dose of cold reality you could believe.
* BrokenAce: So broken that his emotional damage is arguably almost completely responsible for the events OF THE ENTIRE MANGA. In-universe, Kakashi admits he is this to Sasuke in an attempt to convince Sasuke that revenge isn't everything and that living with the pain of his losses, while difficult, is possible. [[ForegoneConclusion It doesn't work]]. Later, Kakashi tells Obito and Minato that losing Obito, Rin, and Minato all within the span of a year all but completely broke him, going on to state that there was nothing stopping him from completely sinking into despair except for the fact that Obito had entrusted his Sharingan to him. Given the amount of characters that's turned to darker paths for similar reasons, it's a bit of an eye-opener as to how close Kakashi could have been to completely losing himself as well.
* BrokenPedestal: His childhood friend Obito Uchiha, who he originally thought was dead, and who was also the source of most of his ideals as an adult [[EvilFormerFriend is now one of his greatest enemies]].
* BroughtDownToBadass: He loses his Sharingan to Madara and gets his normal eye restored by Naruto's new healing powers right after. Of course, he is still a highly trained ninja, but that means he can no longer use any of his Sharingan abilities or even his Raikiri properly. Obito's spirit later gives both his eyes the Mangekyo Sharingan, but this wears off after Kaguya's defeat.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: The first of many, many examples among the characters. See also AssShove, LovableSexManiac.
* CanineCompanion: The Ninja Hounds that he uses as a tracking unit.
* TheCaptain: Of Squad 7.
* CaretakerReversal: For most of their lives, it's been Guy attempting to take care of Kakashi, both in regards to his physical and mental well-being. However, after [[CareerEndingInjury permanently injuring his right leg]] against Madara, it's shown in ''Kakashi Hiden'' that a large part of Kakashi's life is now spent at Guy's side, happily helping his crippled friend adapt to being confined to a wheelchair.
* CelibateHero: By the end of the series, Kakashi remains single.
* CerebusRetcon: His habits of coming late and making lame excuses are revealed to be his way to honor his deceased friend Obito.
* CharacterDevelopment: Kakashi lived most of his life in an attempt to emulate and memorialize his childhood friend. He adopted an entirely new personality and mannerisms, his pathological lateness is even attributed to him spending three hours straight at the Memorial Stone every single day, staring at Obito's name. This continued until during the Fourth Shinobi World War when he learned that Obito had become the BigBad. This information almost broke him, but it was also the event that contributed to him finally finding closure and gave him the will to live his own life.
* CharacterTics: His happy eye-arch.
* ChildProdigy: Youngest Genin and Chunin graduated at 5 and 6.
* CombatClairvoyance: With the Sharingan, Kakashi can accurately reproduce any movement he sees (his own physical skill permitting) and take in a heightened amount of visual information.
* TheComicallySerious: Often his nonchalance is used in humor, especially to contrast [[HotBlooded Guy]].
* CoolKidAndLoserFriendship: Shown to have this from early childhood with Guy. While Kakashi was naturally gifted and admired all throughout their Academy and teenaged years, Guy was viewed as the weird loser who couldn't do anything beyond taijutsu.
* CoolTeacher: Team 7 was the first team that he ever passed, because they're the first one to catch his lesson on putting each other's safety ahead of the mission.
* CovertPervert: He's obsessed with the "Icha Icha" series of adult novels, and gets embarrassed when asked to read certain passages to others. Naruto once got the drop on him by pretending to spoiler one book's ending.
* CurbStompBattle: Delivers one to Team 7 during the bell test. Sasuke is the only one who makes him put a semblance of effort, but even then, Kakashi beats him without much trouble.
* CurbStompCushion: Generally gets hit with this trope, despite being subjected to TheWorfEffect rather frequently. Whenever Kakashi confronts members of the Akatsuki, he does much better than most could do, but is still ultimately overwhelmed. He has the skill, intelligence and just enough speed and power to keep up with them, even the likes of Itachi and Pain, and more than held his own against Kakuzu, Deidara and Hidan, but he doesn't. He ''might'' have been able to beat the weaker members mentioned, especially via Kamui, but all of his conclusive 1V1 fights after Zabuza end with him losing or tagging out with/being joined by someone else, such as Naruto. Out of them, this trope is best demonstrated with his fight with Itachi. The Copy Ninja actually holds his own when Itachi isn't using his Mangekyou Sharingan powers, even impressing Itachi to a degree, but once Itachi uses Tsukuyomi, Kakashi (although managing to survive) is rendered comatose.
* CynicismCatalyst: Kakashi became obsessed with the shinobi code and began placing the mission above his teammates after his father committed suicide, having become ostracized and falling into despair for failing a mission to save his comrades.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: Kakashi had two forbidden techniques: Raikiri, an enhanced Chidori; and Kamui, which [[OneHitKill sucks anything he looks at into another dimension]]. Both are limited by chakra capacity. He figured out how to increase his chakra capacity (and taught Sasuke how as well).
* ADayInTheLimelight:
** {{Subverted|Trope}} with ''Kakashi Gaiden''. It appeared to be this when it came out, going into his backstory and explaining his personality and Sharingan. Looking at the series as a whole, it's clearly ''really'' about establishing Obito, who would go on to have a massive impact on the plot.
** He gets two proper ones in a filler arc called ''ANBU Kakashi Arc'', which depicts his past between killing Rin and the start of the main series, and the light novel ''Literature/KakashiHidenLightningInTheIcySky''.
* DeadpanSnarker: Always has a straight face. One would imagine the mask probably helps in this department.
-->'''Kakashi:''' Naruto, you can't ''kill'' the client. That's not how it works.
* DespairEventHorizon:
** It's indicated in the anime filler that covers his time in ANBU during and after the Kyuubi attack that Kakashi was dangerously close to this after the death of his sensei, leaving him the last living member of his team (to his knowledge). It's never outright stated, but it's implied the reason why Kakashi wasn't a big part of Naruto's life until he became a genin was because he was so mentally anguished that he couldn't be trusted around small children, even if they were his sensei's son. He was barely able to take care of ''himself''; there's no way he would've been able to handle a baby Jinchuuriki. It took a lot of time and support for him to move past this, and it wasn't until Team 7 that he really began to heal.
** As is becoming clear that Tobi is Obito, he's been slowly getting there again. [[HopeCrusher Obito]] in turn, in every way helps but thankfully, Guy and Naruto snap him out of it.
* DiscardAndDraw: After the Fourth Great Ninja War, using the Chidori became impractical for Kakashi with him no longer having the Sharingan to circumvent the tunnel vision issue that comes with the technique. As a result, Kakashi develops the weaker but less chakra- and body-intensive Purple Lightning as a replacement.
* DishingOutDirt: He can use Earth Release to move underground for sneak attacks or produce walls to defend himself or block enemies.
* TheDitherer: Kakashi is an Empathic Fence-Sitter. As the squad teacher/leader, he tends to do the bare minimum and then leaves the genin to fend for themselves. This contributes to many of the problems Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke faced throughout the series, something he openly acknowledges and deeply regrets.
* DontCallMeSir: After becoming the Hokage, he often has to remind others to address him without "Lord."
* DuelToTheDeath: His fight with Obito was supposed to be the ItsPersonal version. Unfortunately, Obito purposefully invoked this in order to have Kakashi get rid of the "no-suicide" seal on his heart.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: This guy really deserved a Happy Ending after everything that happened to him. To sum up, he lost his parents, became jaded, then one by one his teammates and sensei, enlisted in the ANBU to see some of his teammates die, watched his Junior in the ANBU turn 'evil'. Then, when finally things were becoming right for him, his student turned to evil to exact vengeance, the student's brother (his Junior in ANBU) crippling him for weeks (making him unable to save his student), freaking DYING in the invasion of his village (he got better),seeing the vengeance filled student turn mad and a raging psychopath bent on killing them and the village, seeing his allies and respected enemies mindlessly controlled by a maniac, fighting the BigBad to realise he was actually his childhood friend thought to be dead, fatally stabbing him, going blind in an eye, seeing his childhood friend die again for real, witnessing Sasuke's revolution and the subsequent fight. After that, he became the village 's leader for several years, helped the student redeem himself for good, fulfilling his childhood friends' and [[ParentalSubstitute Parental Figure's]] dreams, enforcing peace in the world. After it, he went into a peaceful retirement as a guiding force behind the new generation, inspiring thousands. Happy Ending doesn't even begin to describe what it meant for him.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: The few females ''and'' males who have seen him unmasked are, well, ''very'' impressed.
* EverybodysDeadDave: His backstory can be summed up in this one trope. When Sasuke threatens to kill someone close to him so Kakashi can understand his pain, Kakashi replies that [[HarmfulToMinors everyone he cares about is already dead]].
* ExcuseMeWhileIMultitask: Given a sufficiently inexperienced opponent, he can fight with one hand and read pornographic novels (namely, the ''Icha Icha'' series written by Jiraiya) with the other. He is quite happy to demonstrate this ability.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: His [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110803152736/naruto/images/e/e0/Mangeky%C5%8D_Sharingan_Kakashi.svg Mangekyo Sharingan]].
* EyepatchOfPower: Normally covers his left eye with his headband. Underneath is his Sharingan. He hides it because unlike an Uchiha, Kakashi is incapable of turning it off at will. Only when facing a strong opponent does he uncover it.
* EyeScream: He lost his eye after taking a slash for Obito. His Sharingan is ripped out by Madara, who jams it into his own empty socket. Thankfully, Naruto uses the chakra gifted to him by the Sage of the Six Paths to give him a new eye.
* FailureHero: How he sees himself after watching his childhood team die and failing to talk Sasuke out of defecting.
* FatalFlaw: As Kakashi apologizes to Sakura for allowing Team 7's issues to escalate into an international incident during the Five Kage Summit arc, he openly acknowledges that his indecisiveness and carelessness are his major flaws, especially in relation to the discord within his team, and it's not without good reason.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: At the beginning of ''Shippuden'', Kakashi shows that he learned a new technique called Kamui which allows Mangekyou Sharingan users to teleport something or anyone into another dimension. But we also learn that to awaken the Mangekyou Sharingan the user needs to kill/see the death of an important person in their life. Also, Kakashi mentions in one moment that he couldn't keep the promise that he gave Obito to protect Rin. So, how could Kakashi awaken his Mangekyou Sharingan? After Tobi's identity is revealed we learn that Kakashi's Sharingan became a Mangekyō Sharingan long before the events of ''Shippuden'', when he, with his own hands, killed Rin, that also became a trauma that simultaneously caused the Mangekyō to awaken in Obito.
* ForgottenPhlebotinum:
** Kakashi's had the Mangekyo Sharingan for nearly twenty years. Sure would've been handy against Orochimaru or Itachi. Granted, he fell unconscious the moment he unlocked it and didn't encounter another Mangekyo Sharingan user until he fought Itachi, so he might not have even realized he had one until then at the earliest. Even if he did realize, the use of the normal Sharingan drains a lot of chakra (he was out of commission for a few days after the first battle with Zabuza) and the Mangekyo Sharingan requires ''even more'' chakra, so it's possible that he hadn't yet the stamina required to use it.
** Additionally, given Kakashi's mental state after the incident, he was in no hurry to reflect or *meditate* on Rin's death. The guy was on the verge of working himself to death for years after Rin died. He didn't have the Uchiha Stone to tell him of the eye's power either. That was probably a good thing, since the stone was a trap to trick disgruntled Sharingan users into treachery. Had Kakashi discovered the stone and the eye's powers, Black Zetsu could have had a field day trying to manipulate the emotionally unstable guy (not that Obito would have allowed it).
* FourStarBadass: As General of the Third Division.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble:Phlegmatic: Introverted, thoughtful, insightful and contemplative.
* FriendlyRivalry: Proud owner of the ''ultimate'' rivalry with Might Guy, lasting from their early childhood, up into adulthood, and still very, very intense as they go over the hill, showing absolutely ''NO'' signs of slowing down. Also, it should be noted that Guy and Kakashi's rivalry is one of the only positive rivalry relationships in the series (and is really the only positive relationship Kakashi has these days). Every other rivalry usually makes the losing part very bitter, or their friendship dissolves. This includes Naruto/Sasuke, Hashirama/Madara, and Sarutobi/Danzo. Even if Naruto and Sasuke eventually rekindled their friendship, it does not detract from how much pain and how long it took to get to that point.
* GenerationXerox:
** He was mentioned to greatly resemble his father Sakumo Hatake, Konoha's White Fang, which made his enemies tremble in fear of him even when he was just about thirteen years of age, mistaking him for his father. Cut to many years after when he is already known as ''Kakashi of the Sharingan'' and you know the awesome is InTheBlood.
*** Another unfortunate parallel he had to his father are their [[DespairEventHorizon suicidal tendencies]]. Sakumo was DrivenToSuicide after he was scorned for failing a major mission in order to save his comrades; Kakashi was nearly driven to the same after he lost every other member of his original team in the span of a single year, who also happened to be the closest he had to family after Sakumo's death. ''Unlike'' Sakumo, Kakashi still had one person in his life to support him: his best friend Might Guy, who managed to keep him off the ledge long enough to rebuild a stronger support system with Team 7 years later. It's because of Team 7 (and more specifically Naruto) that Kakashi is able to break out of his worst bout of depression yet after learning Obito is the BigBad Tobi.
** Further xerox-ing lays credibility that since the Third Hokage taught the original Sannin of Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade, and that since the villagers see him as temporary Hokage when Tsunade was in her coma, Kakashi is a generation Xerox of Sarutobi, the Third Hokage.
** He's also a generation xerox of Jiraiya. He lost his teacher, lost his student (to the dark side), his closest childhood friend turned into one of the most reviled criminals in history and was indirectly responsible for their teacher's death, and has a near pathological HeroicSelfDeprecation as well.
** And he is ''also'' one to Minato as well, especially considering that his team is basically a GenerationXerox of Minato's team. One of them went evil because LoveMakesYouEvil (Obito and Sasuke), one of them stayed with Konoha (Naruto and Kakashi), and one was a skilled medic-nin (Rin and Sakura). He also ends up as Hokage, completing the similarities.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Kakashi has a scar over his left eye, but it is usually covered by his forehead protector. It is the result of an injury to his eye that led to an eye transplant.
* GuileHero: In his first fight with Zabuza he hypnotized him using the Sharingan to perform a water jutsu he already knew, defeated him by using it first, then had Zabuza believe he could see the future.
* {{Henohenomoheji}}: Seen on Kakashi's decoy scarecrow in Episode 101 ("Gotta See! Gotta Know! Kakashi-Sensei's True Face!"), when Team 7 attempts to unveil Kakashi's true face. It's also featured on the backs of his 9 ''ninken'' (Ninja Hounds/Dogs) Summoning group.
* {{Hellhound}}: Not literally, but he has a strong [[AnimalMotif dog motif]] and during his time as the Inu (Dog) Ambu he plunged himself into darkness and was the most vicious and cruel member of the organisation, by far, he was even [[FameThroughInfamy famous for it]].
* HeroesLoveDogs: Kakashi is able to summon a pack of ninja hounds of various breeds.
* HeroicRROD: This happens to him a lot in Part I -- at one point, the others are surprised when he doesn't need a hospital trip after a fight. He can handle the Sharingan somewhat better in ''Shippuden'', but still needs to watch his reserves carefully.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: He literally calls himself trash when talking to Obito. After losing his original team in a span of a year, Kakashi was on the verge of the DespairEventHorizon, and it took a lot of time and support to move on from their deaths. Team 7 helped, but after Sasuke's departure, Kakashi's guilt reared its head. Learning that his childhood friend Obito, his idol and hero, the person who Kakashi has modeled his entire life after, is responsible for nearly every tragedy that has befallen him over the years, starting with their teacher's death, all but broke him completely -- the amount of self-hatred he felt after that revelation was almost insurmountable.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He is pretty much this with Guy, whom he trusts the most.
* HiddenDepths: From Naruto's point of view, he has this generally cheerful, constantly tardy teacher who is a FlatCharacter, someone he doesn't really think or worry about all that much. However, during the fight with Obito, it turns out that that same tardy, cheery guy who's been protecting Naruto all these years is indirectly responsible for creating the main villain of the story, and he has one of the worst background stories of all the characters in the series. And that's pretty impressive, considering this is a Shonen manga, in which generally everyone and their grandmother has a sob story.
* HypnoticEyes: With the Sharingan, Kakashi can perform what is generically called Sharingan Genjutsu. In his first fight against Zabuza, he was able to influence Zabuza's actions to make him believe Kakashi was seeing the future and casted jutsu that Zabazu was attempting before Zabuza did the jutsu himself.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: Specifically, ''he killed Rin himself''... because she chose to jump in the way of his Raikiri rather than be a TrojanHorse.
* ImprobableAge: Graduated from the Academy and became a Genin at the age of 5 and became Chunin a year later.
* InformedAbility:
** Kakashi is a legendary ninja who has supposedly copied over a thousand jutsu. Nearly all of his opponents have talked about how dangerous he is when they first face him. We almost ''never'' get to see him go all out, and when he does get to battle he's usually forced to use up chakra protecting his peers. The worst example is probably when he took on the remaining zombified Seven Swordsmen of the Mist. It was implied to be an absolute CurbStompBattle in his favour, [[OffscreenMomentOfAwesome but it happened entirely off-panel]]. {{Averted|Trope}} in the anime, which takes advantage of AdaptationExpansion. The fights are just as badass as you'd expect them to be.
** In addition, Kakashi the Copy-Ninja has yet to ever actually ''copy'' any jutsu on-screen. In the Land of Waves, Zabuza -- and subsequently many fans -- believed that he had somehow copied and reversed his Water jutsu at the exact moment Zabuza himself was using it, perhaps even ''before'', but by the next battle Zabuza has realised that Kakashi simply used his Sharingan to implant ideas of what jutsu to use in Zabuza's mind, to freak him out, meaning every Water jutsu Zabuza used was already in Kakashi's arsenal. He ''might'' have copied Kakuzu's Iron Skin jutsu but if he has, he has yet to demonstrate it.
* InhumanEyeConcealers: Kakashi's left eye has a red iris and is adorned with tomoe symbols, which denotes he has a Sharingan, a unique genetic anomaly that grants him amazing abilities, but cannot be turned off and leaves him exhausted if used for too long. As a result, he always covers it with his forehead protector, only revealing his abnormal eye to surprise his opponents in battle.
* InstantArmor: Due to Obito passing on his chakra and dual Mangekyō, Kakashi can manifest Susanoo, specifically its "Complete Body" form. It can be used for flight, defend others with its large size, and even have the intangibility of Kamui extended to it. In terms of weaponry, it has a sword like all Susanoo do, but it also can throw Kamui Shuriken in order to warp away whatever they are thrown at.
* InstantExpert: When Kakashi uses the Susanoo, he's also able to do so effortlessly on the first try.
* InsufferableGenius: Kakashi started out as this, mainly toward Obito. He insists on taking point against an enemy ninja to try out his new jutsu, Chidori, destroying almost all the ninja's clones and almost taking down the ninja, but being limited by the jutsu's tunnel vision, and having to be saved by his teacher. Kakashi gets better by the end of ''Kakashi Gaiden'', and by the start of the series, is a relatively modest individual who bears regret for his decisions.
* ItsAllMyFault: For Sasuke's defection and everything it led to, particularity to the rift it cause with Team 7 and Sasuke becoming a bitter enemy of Konoha.
* TheLeader: Even though his students outclass him strength-wise during the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kakashi remains their leader. Sasuke [[LeaderWannabe tries to take over]], but his strategies against Kaguya fail miserably. Kakashi comes up with an alternative plan in minutes, making use of his students' skills as well as his own, and it instantly succeeds. Afterwards, even the Sage of the Sixth Paths compliments his leadership ability. Unsurprisingly, Kakashi ends up becoming the sixth Hokage.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Obito. Despite his claims that he no longer cared for Kakashi after Rin's death, Obito's ideal reality was one where Kakashi was able to live up to the ideals he passed on to him. Though he didn't admit it, Obito was clearly troubled by how broken his childhood friend had become after his "death", and it served as even further motivation to go forward with the AssimilationPlot. At the other end of the spectrum, Might Guy is his, being the his best friend and the one person who kept him from going over edge for years until he became the teacher for Team 7.
* LoonyFriendsImproveYourPersonality: Guy is the one person Kakashi has never been able to keep at arm's length, [[NotSoAboveItAll and it shows]]. Their ridiculous FriendlyRivalry aside, Guy is often shown to bring out the best in Kakashi, and is the main reason why he never fell into a complete downward spiral [[DrivenToSuicide like his father Sakumo had]].
* LooseLips: Accidentally leaked the classified information of Naruto's birth, unaware that Obito was listening in, or that he was even alive, at a visit to Rin's grave.
* LovableSexManiac: He's a big fan of Jiraiya's erotic book series. He also has the habit of giggling in a perverted manner while reading them.
* MadeOfIron: In the AndIMustScream ordeal above, what Kakashi perceived as approximately one minute and forty-eight seconds (counting the time indicator from "I will stab you with a sword for 72 hours" to "71 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds remaining" was only one second. Meaning that the "three days" Kakashi experienced was, to him, closer to about '''one hundred and eight''' days. Even he was released from the genjutsu, he doesn't immediately pass out. He stays conscious long enough to realize how little time actually passed, and to hear Kisame express surprise that Kakashi is ''still alive''. Psychologically MadeOfIron? You bet your ass.
* MagicalEye: Kakashi received his Sharingan in his left eye during the Third Shinobi World War from Obito Uchiha, a replacement for the left eye he'd lost shortly beforehand. The Sharingan has become his most identifying feature in the years since then, such that he is widely known as "Kakashi of the Sharingan". Kakashi loses his Sharingan during the Fourth Shinobi World War to Madara Uchiha. When Obito dies with both his Sharingan, his spirit briefly returns from the afterlife and transfers them into Kakashi, granting him temporary use of the dōjutsu's full power.
* MakingASplash: He can use Water Release without a nearby water source, being able to produce massive torrents, water dragons, water clones or defensive walls.
* MaskPower:
** NEVER seen without it. The only time his face was uncovered, it wasn't shown onscreen. An anime filler episode revolves around Team 7 trying to see under Kakashi's mask. When they finally get him to remove it in front of them, underneath is... [[TheUnreveal another mask]].
** On some covers he doesn't have it, but then his face is usually covered by his book or hand.
** Also, according to Pakkun, he hates being photographed without it.
** When he becomes Hokage, his face on the mountain still has the mask.
** His face was '''finally''' [[https://web.archive.org/web/20160408050650if_/http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20150501163510/naruto/images/c/ca/Kakashi%27s_TRUE_FACE.png revealed]] in an art book released exclusively at an art exhibition for the series in Tokyo, and later [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GibOH_OqNT4 was officially seen]] in ''Shippuden'' Episode 469. [[spoiler:He has a beauty mark under his mouth on the left-hand side of his face, and [[StrongFamilyResemblance he DOES look a lot like his dead father]]]].
* MeaningfulName: Kakashi means "scarecrow," and Hatake means "farmland or field." Both are an obvious reference to his tall and lean appearance. This also ties to his use of a {{Henohenomoheji}} logo on his summoned dogs and decoys. There's also the fact that real life ninjas often disguised themselves as poor farmers. Gets into ThemeNaming when you consider his Dad's name could come from the word Sakumotsu, which translates to "Crops."
* MentorOccupationalHazard: {{Subverted|Trope}}, he ''did'' die during Pain's invasion, but was revived immediately and then survived to the end.
* MoralityAdjustment: Thanks to Obito, he changes from a by-the-book and cold-hearted (if loyal) ChildSoldier who'd leave a friend to die in a heartbeat if he thought it'd be better for the village, into a man who is known for never leaving anyone behind, no matter the costs.
* MrExposition: In the first arc he spends a fair amount of time expositing on chakra and jutsus. Justified as he's teaching these concepts to his students.
* MultilayerFacade: Kakashi is a literal case: he wears ''another mask'' under his mask.
* MyGreatestFailure: Tends to dwell on this, especially regarding Obito, losing track of time at the Memorial Stone by ''reminding himself of how he has failed.'' And then there's the issue of his ''second'' team...
* NiceGuy: He is one of the nicest characters in the manga/anime.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: He inadvertently caused the Kyuubi incident by blabbing that Kurama's Jinchuuriki was gonna have a baby in front of Rin's grave, not realizing Obito was there as well.
* NobodyCallsMeChicken: Almost word-for-word. Kakashi was completely uninterested in Obito's challenge to see who could complete the most of Team Minato's missions in the village until Obito called him a chicken.
* NoMoreHoldingBackSpeech: He makes two, one before and one during his final duel with Obito, although the latter is an internal monologue. They both signify his acknowledgement of the fact that his former friend must now be treated no differently than any other enemy.
--> '''Kakashi:'''"In the ninja world, those who break the rules are trash. However, those who abandon their comrades are worse than trash. And the ones who abandon their friends' feelings are even worse than that. I won't get rid of your past feelings... even if it's you refusing them."\
\
''Naruto...You will never lose your way. You're stronger than me, and you're unique in many ways. As for me, this is all I can do for now. I'll do what I must... In order to protect the old Obito, I must...'''kill the current one!''' ''
* NoMouth: Keeps his mouth concealed behind a mask at all times. Played with in the best filler of the anime.
* NonchalantDodge: When giving the infamous bell test to the newly formed Team 7 he casually dodges all of Naruto and Sasuke's attacks, without even having to put down or even stop reading his book. Even provides the page picture for that trope.
* TheNoseKnows: He is said to have a very good sense of smell. And he has a pack of trained canines.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** Despite being serious and even aloof at times, he still takes part in Guy's silly rivalry matches; when Guy introduced himself, he stated that they've had 99 matches so far. The anime [[AdaptationExpansion features this more prominently]], like the time he and Guy were keeping score while fighting off Sound ninja[[note]]Guy was winning[[/note]]. Then, there's ''Shippuden'' Episode 219...
** In "The Real True Face" manga omake, he disguised himself as a bumbling ex-ANBU and "helped" Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura find a unmasked photograph of him. He had so much fun trolling them, he decided to do it again. Still, he noted he couldn't keep fooling them forever; just a couple more times...'
** Despite seeming casual and above the antics of say, Jiraiya, it turns out Kakashi is actually reading "Make-Out Tactics, which is heavily implied to be very smutty. So yeah, he's essentially spending his time reading softcore porn.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: We first meet Kakashi as a goofy teacher who falls for one of Naruto's unbelievably idiotic pranks, but he soon reveals himself to be badass. His enemies do know he's dangerous, and treat him as such, but he's FAR more dangerous than most of them have been led to believe.
* ObsoleteMentor: [[AvertedTrope Averts]] this, despite being [[TheWorfEffect Worfed]] sometimes. He specifically mentions in one arc that he's still young and improving. In the fight against [[BigBad Tobi/Obito]] he's particularly important. He's not a PersonOfMassDestruction like the main cast, but his shrewdness is still one of his greatest assets.
* OddFriendship: Kakashi and Guy are polar opposites in almost every way, but they also have one of the healthiest and most enduring friendships of the whole series.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: Kakashi vs The Seven Swordsmen of the Mist. Kakashi won apparently, but he misplaced Zabuza's sword.
* OlderThanHeLooks: By the time of ''Boruto'' he is somewhere between 44 and 46 years old, but aside from a few extra lines around his eyes he looks much the same as he did in his late 20s. He's aged remarkably well considering all the trauma he's endured in his life. In one episode Boruto even compares him to Tsunade when he sees from a old photo how little he's changed.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Being the flake he usually acts like, seeing him almost too mad to speak after Guy reveals he taught Lee the [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Hidden Lotus]] clues the audience in that things are about to get serious. It also highlights Kakashi's unusual hatred of the Eight Gates Technique, which is essentially a [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique suicide attack]] that kills its user when fully utilized, as shown when Guy opens the Eighth Gate against Madara.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: While certainly a versatile, experienced and highly competent fighter, his battles have been somewhat a letdown compared to say Akatsuki, Orochimaru or the Kages. He also suffers a lot of TheWorfEffect against this opponents, even more than Sasuke. A fairly common complaint is that he's hyped to be stronger than he is, [[AllThereInTheManual especially in the databooks, where he's hyped to be one of the most formidable shinobi alive]]. To his credit, however, those who Worf him tend to have attained a similar, if not greater ShroudedInMyth status.
* ParentalAbandonment: His father Sakumo committed suicide when Kakashi was six-years-old and his mother died before then.
* ParentalSubstitute:
** To a lesser degree, Kakashi might also count as one to Naruto. He made sure Naruto ate vegetables pre-TimeSkip, and post-TimeSkip the two develop a close bond and are highly protective of each other. Given that Naruto ends up becoming Kakashi's successor as Hokage and it's implied that even after that Kakashi still helps him out and advises him, it's safe to say their friendship/familial bond is still going strong after all those years.
** Since Naruto's father is generally seen by Fanon as Kakashi's parental substitute, it might be more accurate to say Naruto and Kakashi have a brotherly bond.
* PetTheDog: When a young Guy revealed to Kakashi that he was beginning to [[BrokenPedestal doubt his father's philosophies]] about youth and passion, Kakashi said that he believed Duy was an amazing ninja, largely because of his [[{{Determinator}} immense persistence]] and belief in never giving up on your dreams.
** Even more heartwarming when you consider that Kakashi himself is an orphan because of his father's suicide. To a child like Kakashi, it wasn't Duy's ninja abilities that made him amazing, but his [[GoodParents unwavering dedication and love for his son]]. Yes, Duy may have been the "Eternal Genin", but he also mastered the [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Eight Gates Technique]] and was ''always'' there for Guy, no matter what people said about him.
* PortalCut: Kakashi's Mangekyou Sharingan is able to use a long-range version of Kamui, which can transport targets anywhere in the user's line of sight. The target is surrounded with a barrier space, the location and size of which can be specified at will, and when the user concentrates on the target within, the space at the barrier's centre distorts and draws everything within into another dimension.
* PowerCopying: Over the years, due in large part to his Sharingan, he gained a vast arsenal; reputed to have copied over a thousand jutsu and which led to his moniker as "Copy Ninja Kakashi".
* PrettyBoy:
** We finally find out why Teuchi and Ayame reacted the way they did. Even Sakura, who was still in her Sasuke-obsessed phase at the time, called him handsome (of course, she didn't know it was him).
** His face is the one [[spoiler:Pakkun]] had suggested in the "Kakashi's Real Face is Finally Unveiled" manga omake, except without the [[spoiler:Guy-like sparkling toothy grin]]. That's probably what made the ninken think "That wasn't it at all."
* ThePromise: Kakashi promised Obito that he would look after Rin. It would seem he failed. And the NotQuiteDead Obito witnesses that Kakashi actually killing Rin, contributing to his change into Tobi.
* PsychosomaticSuperpowerOutage: Suffers from this during the ANBU filler arc. He can't use the Chidori/Raikiri with his mental trauma of killing Rin acting up everytime he tries to use it. Of course, considering what we've seen over the course of the series, he gets better.
* RedBaron: Kakashi has two famous nicknames first being Kakashi of the Sharingan, second being The Copy Ninja.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue to Might Guy and Obito's Reds.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: When creating the Chidori, it’s revealed that using it (and later the Lightning Cutter) creates a tunnel vision, which can be negated by the Sharingan's enhanced eyesight. As such, the technique is useless to those without the dojutsu. As a result, [[spoiler:when his got permanently removed, Kakashi made a point to create Lightning Release: Purple Electricity, which works on similar principles of the Chidori/Lightning Cutter but without the tunnel vision side effect]].
* RetiredBadass: Kakashi easily managed to get an upper hand without the Sharingan against Boruto and his classmates during their genin exams.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: "In the ninja world, those who break the rules are scum, that's true, but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum."
* SelfDuplication: Part of Kakashi's usual approach to combat is to rely on the Body Replacement Technique and clone techniques (such as shadow clones, water clones and lightning clones), thereby keeping himself out of harm's way while he observes an opponent and their abilities.
* ShapingYourAttacks: His Running Beast ability.
* ShellShockedVeteran: He lost his father to suicide, his childhood friend Obito (who gave him his left eye as a permanent memento and [[spoiler: later turns up alive and a villain responsible for much of the bad things that have occurred in the last sixteen years, including their teacher Minato's death]]) to an enemy attack, his teammate Rin (who ''he himself'' killed) to HeroicSacrifice, and his mentor Minato to the Kyuubi. As such, when Sasuke demanded to know how Kakashi would react if he killed everyone that Kakashi cared about, his reply was to simply [[StepfordSmiler smile]] and say that he had [[TearJerker already lost everyone precious to him.]]
** The reason Kakashi was always late for his training sessions with his genin team? [[CerebusRetcon Every morning he spends hours just standing in front of the Konoha memorial to dead shinobi to honor his comrades' memory.]] The anime goes in and does a masterful anime expansion of the immediate aftermath of Rin's HeroicSacrifice. Kakashi has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, he keeps seeing Rin die by his hands, keeps having nightmares, becomes far, far more withdrawn, and he couldn't even ''use'' his Chidori anymore since he kept thinking of Rin. All at [[ImprobableAge 13-years-old]]. You have to wonder why Konoha doesn't have a grief counselor that Minato assigned to Kakashi.
** It's stated that during his time in [[EliteMooks ANBU]], Kakashi became so withdrawn and depressed that Guy literally begged the Third Hokage to either [[TrueCompanions allow Guy himself to join]] or release Kakashi from service altogether. It was only after his jounin instructor transfer and [[LivingEmotionalCrutch Guy's persistent friendship]] that Kakashi's mental health started to improve for the first time in years.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** He acts very supportive of Sakura's love for Sasuke:
*** He tries to persuade Sasuke to let go of his vengeance and think about Sakura's love for him
*** Later he remarks how Sakura's feelings for Sasuke had changed over time from a girlish crush into true love.
*** He makes an impassioned speech to Sasuke after he coldly [[KickTheDog knocked Sakura out with a genjutsu]], about how her love for him doesn't need to be justified.
*** In the ''Shippudden'' adaptation of ''[[Literature/NarutoHiden Sasuke Shinden: Book of Sunrise]]'', mentions that he's going to contact Sasuke to come to the Village, and winks to Sakura, which flusters her greatly.
** In ''Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4'', he forms a mission between Naruto, Sakura, and Hinata [[TheMatchmaker in the hopes that Naruto and Hinata would get together]].
* ShockAndAwe: Kakashi's natural affinity is for Lightning Release, which he will at times channel into [[AbsurdCuttingPower weaponry to increase its cutting power.]] When he was younger, he tried to infuse the Rasengan with his lightning nature, but the task proved too difficult. In its place he created the [[RazorSharpHand Chidori]], a collection of lightning chakra in the hand that can [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice pierce most targets that it is thrust into]] and is the only jutsu he didn't learn from copying; he once famously split a bolt of lightning with his Chidori, earning the name "Raikiri/Lightning Blade". The Chidori and Raikiri are very fast attacks, such that Kakashi can only use them safely with his Sharingan. Other lightning techniques include [[ShapingYourAttacks hounds manipulated to attack enemies]], [[SelfDuplication clones that paralyse on contact]] and chains to cut through multiple targets at once.
* ShroudedInMyth: See RedBaron. And just what the hell is behind that mask?
* ShutUpHannibal:
** Finally delivered one to Obito, pointing that he basically chose to ignore every feeling his friends could possibly have, quoting Obito himself. "And those who don't respect their comrades' memories...are the worst."
** He gives another to Sasuke, after he declares that Kakashi could only understand how he felt about Itachi if Sasuke went and killed everyone he loved. Kakashi simply replies that he can't do that, as everyone that qualifies is already dead.
* SignatureMove: Raikiri/Lightning Blade, similar to the Chidori only better.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: His bell test, which doubles as a SecretTestOfCharacter. Any group that obeys his order to not feed their teammate is failed on the spot. But if they disobey and help their teammate out, they pass.
* SoProudOfYou: His reaction to the original Team 7 landing in unison a decisive blow on Kaguya:
--> '''Kakashi:''' That was picture perfect. Right now, the way you all are together...I love you.
* SpaceMaster: His Mangekyo Sharingan's technique, Kamui, can warp objects into [[PocketDimension another dimension]]. He can now use Kamui to get to and from the other dimension at will.
* StevenUlyssesPerhero: In "The Real True Face" manga omake, he introduces his ex-[=ANBU=] photographer persona to Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura as "Sukea" [[note]]In japanese, there's no single "r" sound, only "ra", "re", "ri", "ro", "ru." So, the name "Shikaner" some translations give is grammatically impossible.[[/note]]. Now, Kakashi's name means "scarecrow"; in japanese, that is pronounced: ''sukeakuro'' -> '''''Sukea''''' ''Kuro''.
* TheStoic: Downplayed. While Kakashi does show a regular degree of emotion, he is considerably much more calm and reserved about it than other characters, especially when compared to Naruto or Might Guy.
* StrongAndSkilled: Becomes this after receiving Obito's chakra towards the end of the manga, being able to use his techniques with great power behind it and graduating from WeakButSkilled.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Is confused for his father [[http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Sakumo_Hatake Sakumo]] on several occasions, even to the point where he is attacked by Chiyo because she's out for his father's blood! [[spoiler:When his face is uncovered, the resemblance is... ''confirmed'': he's basically a short-haired, 15-years-younger Sakumo]].
* SummonMagic: Kakashi has his own personal pack of ninja hounds. In the field, he can summon one or more of his ninja hounds to fetch things for him, restrain targets, or deliver messages. [[TheNoseKnows More commonly, he uses them for tracking, picking up trails that Kakashi, despite his own considerable tracking skills, can't detect, or seeking out targets he doesn't know where to look for.]]
* SuperMode:
** When Naruto shares Kurama's power with the Ninja Alliance he temporarily gains the ability to create a chakra cloak like Naruto has.
** He gets another one, this time a personal ability, that crosses with EleventhHourSuperpower: After Obito gives him both his Mangekyo Sharingan, he can use Susanoo immediately. And unlike other Susanoo users who have to develop it in stages, it manifests in its perfect form right from the get-go.
* SurvivorGuilt: Kakashi is the only survivor of Team Minato (or he thinks so) and clearly feels guilty for it. But mainly over he demonstrates this for the death of his childhood friend, Obito, whom he "talks to" when he visits the Memorial Stone.
* TeamDad: To Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke.
* TookALevelInBadass: It's more subtle than most of the cast, but think about it. The first time we see him go all-out using the Sharingan, summons, and a Raikiri is enough to tire him out. Post-TimeSkip, he's somehow got a Mangekyo that can send stuff through ''another dimension'', and against Kakuzu he's firing off Raikiri like cheap kunai and staying on his feet afterwards.
** By the time Boruto comes around, Kakashi has managed to progress to even greater heights; even developing a couple jutsus worthy of the Kage of old.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: In Shippuden, Kakashi is notably more cheerful and less stoic than in Part 1.
* TookALevelInKindness: Obito's "death" made him realize how important it was to care for your comrades more.
* TragicKeepsake: He kept his father's Tanto for a good bit, but his sharingan eye, which was transplanted into him from his "dead" childhood friend, Obito Uchiha is what really falls into this trope.
* TraumaCongaLine: First, his mother died before she turned thirty, then Kakashi witnessed his father's disgrace and subsequent suicide. Next, his teammate Obito "died" saving him and their other teammate Rin. Kakashi promised Obito that he would protect Rin but eventually ended up breaking that promise and [[HeroicSuicide killing her]]. And finally, he lost his sensei Minato, who along with Kushina was a ParentalSubstitute to Kakashi. Then, when he began to teach his own team, one of his students pulled a FaceHeelTurn and became a missing nin. And finally, it turned out that Obito wasn't NotQuiteDead after all, and had become the BigBad responsible for nearly everything that had happened in the manga. Yes...
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: Kakashi's Sharingan became a [[DeadlyUpgrade Mangekyō Sharingan]] when Rin Nohara died, a trauma that simultaneously caused the Mangekyō to awaken in Obito.
* TrueCompanions: A firm believer in this concept.
* UnknownRival: Guy is a downplayed case of this to him. Kakashi will often ignore Guy talking about their rivalry and when it's his turn to pick the kind of match they will have he often picks things like playing Rock-Paper-Scissors over an actual contest. Guy is possibly Kakashi's closest friend and he deeply respects Guy's capabilities, he just finds the constant competition Guy insists on tiresome.
* TheUnreveal:
** He ''never'' takes the mask off and reveals his face though the series. The only time he did was in a filler episode and it was obscured before the audience or Team 7 could see it. In fact, said filler episode was focused entirely on Team 7's efforts to find out what's behind his mask. It's another mask. Even Kakashi's carving on the mountain of Hokage faces depicts him with a mask.
** The audience '''finally''' gets to see his face revealed in a special art book which was only distributed at a 2015 exhibition celebrating the series. [[https://web.archive.org/web/20160408050650if_/http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20150501163510/naruto/images/c/ca/Kakashi%27s_TRUE_FACE.png It was worth the wait.]]
** The sketch above made its way into canon in Episode 469 of ''Shippuden''. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GibOH_OqNT4 Again, it was VERY worth the wait.]]
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom:
** He abandoned his mission so that he could help Obito when they were kids, resulting in a crippled Obito ending up on Madara's doorstep setting off most of the plot. Though he believes that could've avoided as well if he had gone with him in the first place.
** He speaks about Naruto's birth at Rin's grave. Unfortunately, Obito happened to be watching.
* UnwittingPawn: He became one for Obito. The entire fight with Kakashi was planned by Obito in order to remove Madara's seal as it prevented him from becoming the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki and Kakashi did what Obito wanted from him: Hit him in the heart.
* VitriolicBestBuds:
** His rivalry with Guy is nominally one-sided and Guy is known to rant about Kakashi's "hip and cool" attitude, but there's no doubt the two are the closest of friends.
** Him and Obito were this as kids, with ''heavy'' emphasis on the vitriol. They could be worse than Naruto and Sasuke at times, but deep down they cared about each other, and Kakashi has spent his entire life trying to live up to Obito's wishes.
* WakeUpCallBoss: Kakashi is the first opponent Naruto faces that he doesn't effortlessly defeat. In fact, he hands him and the rest of Team 7 their collective asses.
* WeakButSkilled: Kakashi's individual skill and jutsu is not weak per se -- it's probably in the very top percentile of the shinobi world. However, against the ridiculously overpowered villains of the ''Shippuden'' series like the Akatsuki, Pain, and Tobi, Kakashi is forced to fall back on his natural wit and can be considered this -- especially considering his lack of chakra for spamming his SignatureMove.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Kakashi seeks the approval of his "dead" friend, Obito, to such an extent that Kakashi's entire life revolves around him. After Obito "died", Kakashi idealized him to the point that he adopted an entirely new personality and mannerisms to emulate and memorialize his childhood friend. His pathological lateness is even attributed to him spending three hours straight at the Memorial Stone ''every single day'', staring at Obito's name (and Rin's and his sensei's, but mainly Obito's). While his promise to be Obito's eyes is the only reason he bothers to continue living, that promise is why "Kakashi" and "functioning individual" are the farthest thing away from synonymous. So, rather understandably, Kakashi... did not take it well when he learned what ''really'' [[FaceHeelTurn happened]] [[LoveMakesYouEvil to]] [[BigBad Obito]].
* WeUsedToBeFriends: His childhood friend Obito is now a major contender in the contest to determine the most evil ninja of all time. Tune in tomorrow to find out the results!
* WiseBeyondHisYears: Kakashi graduated from the academy at ''five'', passed the chunin exam one year later, and became a jonin under special condition at 13.
* WishfulProjection: Kakashi is a strange case in which his projection was on someone who he thought was dead -- Obito, who is the one death he has never managed to move past. Somewhere down the line, Obito went from "deceased childhood friend whose last wishes I need to honor", to "idol whose memory and ideals I need to live up to". A lot of Kakashi's baggage stems from his over-idealization of Obito; some part of him genuinely believes that Obito ''always'' would've succeeded where he failed. Essentially, Kakashi is subconsciously projecting his prodigious abilities and "genius" reputation on to his childhood friend, forgetting that while Obito was a very kind and very admirable person, he was still ''human'', and the farthest thing away from perfect. Learning that Obito became the BigBad almost broke him, but it was also the event that contributed to him seeing Obito as a person again and finally being able to move on with his life.
* TheWorfEffect: His only major (i.e. not a curbstomp against someone he vastly outclasses) onscreen solo victory has been against Zabuza. After that he was mostly used to show how strong whatever enemy comes along is, often with him commenting about how much stronger than him they are. That said, he fares a lot better in team battles (against Akatsuki) contributing to victories over Deidara, Itachi (sort of -- it's complicated), Hidan/Kakuzu, and Tobi. Which makes quite a lot of sense when you remember "teamwork" is pretty much everything to the man. During the war he's implied to take out several of the resurrected Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist largely on his own, but most of it is offscreen and he still had backup. He also wins a solo fight against [[spoiler:Obito]], except Kakashi's victory turns out to have been planned on his opponent's part.
* WorthLivingFor: [[LivingIsMoreThanSurviving For a given value of "living"]]. After losing his original team and the most important people in his life, Kakashi was ''very'' close to being DrivenToSuicide. What drove him forward was his promise to Obito, and even that wasn't enough for him to be anything more than a completely and utterly devoted soldier to his village and comrades. It took the persistence of his adulthood best friend Guy and the Third Hokage kicking him out of ANBU for him to have anything remotely resembling an actual life again, and even then he was coasting on being an imitation of his deceased teammate. Team 7 did open him up even more, but all the tragedy involving ''that'' team caused him even more issues. [[spoiler:It wasn't until after Obito's ''second death'' did Kakashi finally find closure and the will to live his own life]].
* YouRemindMeOfX: Kakashi remarked in the third ''Shippuden'' movie ''Inheritors of the Will of Fire'' that Naruto's ethic of protecting his friends solemnly reminds him of his late comrade Obito Uchiha, whose spiky hair and determination Naruto mirrored perfectly.
* YoungerThanHeLooks: Kakashi was 6 when he took the Chunin Exams, but looked almost like a full grown teenager. This is most likely a case of ContinuitySnarl: his age was given in Part I, while the sequence where he takes the exam was drawn much later in Part II. (Obito and Rin are both Kakashi's age, both graduated after him, and yet all three are shown taking the exam.)

Real Name: Tenzou

A member of ANBU, and one of Kakashi's juniors, he is made the temporary Captain of Team 7 while Kakashi recovers in the hospital. As he serves as more of a unit leader than a mentor, Naruto and Sakura call him "taichou"("Captain" or "Commander" in the English manga) instead of "sensei." The name "Yamato" (which means "spear") is actually a code name given to him by Tsunade; his real name is Tenzou. He very much prefers to be called Yamato.

As a child, Yamato was one of sixty infants that Orochimaru injected with the DNA of the First Hokage, trying to replicate the First's unique abilities. Fifty-nine died, and Orochimaru was forced to flee the village before learning that one subject -- Yamato -- had survived. As a result, Yamato can use the First Hokage's Wood Style jutsu, although not with the First's level of ability.

Yamato is a friendly, easygoing person. He prefers diplomacy over using threats when it comes to running his team, but he's not afraid to scare Naruto into doing what he wants. He notes that he's less indulgent than Kakashi is, and says that Naruto and Sakura should not be treated as ninjas in training who need protection, but as ninjas who will eventually have to support Konoha. It's revealed that he was selected as Captain for more than his Wood Style abilities -- he is the only person in the village capable of using Enclosed Hermitage: Return to Society, which, in turn, is the only technique strong enough to contain Naruto's four-tailed Fox state. He later helps Naruto with his training, helping to prevent the fox's chakra from becoming dominant.

Yamato becomes absent from the story after being kidnapped by a snake-induced Kabuto and his powers are used to unwillingly power up the rest of the White Zetsu Army. His own body is later used as a medium by Spiral Zetsu during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Eventually he's freed and after the war and epilogue, Yamato goes on to spend the rest of his life keeping watch over Orochimaru and his flunkies.

* TheArtifact: Started off as Kakashi's substitute as leader of Team 7 and the genetic clone of the first, allowing him to keep the Kyuubi in check. When Kakashi returns to active duty, Yamato's role get demoted to Kakashi's assistant in training Naruto. And then Naruto got full control over Kyuubi's chakra, making Yamato's function completely redundant. As a result, he is immediately kidnapped.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: "I like being nice and friendly, but I don't have any problems with ruling by fear either."
* ButtMonkey:
** Kakashi tends to comically take advantage of him for little things like paying for meals while Naruto's recklessness is often played against his caution.
** Try in Storm 3, where Naruto has raised his fist to him not once, but twice, and this lack of respect actually makes Yamato want to cry.
* ByTheBookCop: Far less lenient about Naruto's MilitaryMaverick tendencies than Kakashi, especially when it comes to his safety as the Nine-Tails' jinchuriki.
* TheCaptain: A temporary replacement for Kakashi, his true role is actually to look after Naruto.
* TheChewToy: In the spin-off ''Manga/RockLeesSpringtimeOfYouth'', he is reduced to a [[TheSpeechless Speechless]] LivingProp.
* ChildProdigy: Ties with Kakashi with being the youngest Chunin at 6.
* CombinationAttack: Has one with Naruto which combines his Water Style Tearing Torrent with Naruto's Wind Style Rasengan.
* TheComicallySerious: Most of the interaction between Bee & Naruto leaves him speechless.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The Anime Special Kakashi Anbu Arc feature him a lot and his background is further expanded.
* DeathGlare: His "ghoul eyes," although only Naruto seems to be scared by it.
* DemotedToExtra: Yamato's role and role has gotten smaller to the point where he gets PutOnABus during the 4th World War [[spoiler:and doesn't return until near the very end of the manga]].
* DishingOutDirt: Along with water, this is a component of [[GreenThumb Wood Release]], and it’s shown that Yamato is proficient in using these two individually.
* EffectiveKnockoff: Yamato acknowledges that his Wood release inherently belongs to the first and that he therefore cannot use it to the same extent, but he became a highly Elite Shinobi and famed wielder of the element all the same.
* FateWorseThanDeath: So Yamato was abducted as a child and experimented upon by a creepy snake-themed MadScientist. He survives, goes on to become a fairly well-adjusted adult, only to be ultimately abducted yet again by another creepy snake-themed MadScientist (the protege of the first one, no less!). Oh and then it is strongly implied that after having vital information [[MindRape forcibly extracted]] from him, he will be used for endless experimentation again.
* GreenThumb: His use of the wood techniques, which also require him to be able to control [[MakingASplash water]] and [[DishingOutDirt earth]] as well.
* MakingASplash: Along with earth, this is a component of [[GreenThumb Wood Release]], and it’s shown that Yamato is proficient in using these two individually.
* MeaningfulName: "Yamato" means "spear" in Japanese. "Tenzou" means "heavenly creation" and refers to things created by nature, which fits with his wood powers.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Yamato may be named after Yamato Takeru, a legendary prince of the Yamato dynasty who was believed to be the first ninja.
* OnlySaneMan: The most rational and level-headed when the new Team 7 is formed.
* SatelliteCharacter: Yamato was brought in as the substitute team leader of Team 7, was kidnapped as baby by Orochimaru and had his DNA manipulated to the point where he's the genetic clone of the First Hokage, and was a member of Anbu with Kakashi. On paper, all of that sounds like a lot of potential for a character. In reality, Yamato ended up being relegated to being Kakashi's assistant in training Naruto and being the ButtMonkey.
* SternTeacher: Contrasts his approach with Kakashi's on a few occasions, such as threatening to throw Naruto, Sakura and Sai in a cage together unless they start working better as a team, and saying that if an injured Naruto is unable to keep up with them, they could leave him behind.
* TheStoic: Typically calm and levelheaded, although he can be disturbed by shocking developments.
* StraightMan: Towards Naruto and Bee's shenanigans.
* SuperpowerfulGenetics: He was the only child to accept and survive the First Hokage's cells in Orochimaru's experiments and the only one who can use his highly coveted Wood Style jutsu. That is until Danzo and Zetsu are introduced anyway.
* TookALevelInKindness: He started to become more sensitive to the feelings of others.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Just like Anko, Yamato got incapacitated early into the war and isn't heard from in quite some time. [[spoiler:It's eventually revealed that one of the Zetsu clones bonded to him as a power source, explaining how it was capable of creating such impressive wood constructs. He's released after Kaguya is defeated]].
** [[spoiler:While he's nowhere to be seen in the DistantEpilogue, he makes a cameo as a guest in Naruto and Hinata's wedding in ''The Last'']].
** Finally makes a reappearance in ''Boruto''. Turns out he spends most of his time monitoring Orochimaru to make sure he's not up to any more world threatening shenanigans.

->''I've drawn hundreds, maybe thousands of pictures so far… other pictures have the situation at the time, and the artist's feelings… like portraits have the person's name… but don't pictures usually have titles…? To be more precise, even if I try to give them titles, I just can't do it. [[EmotionSuppression I don't feel anything… they don't put me in mind of anything]].''

Sai is... socially uninformed, to put it mildly. A ninja from the village of Konoha, pretty much all that is known about Sai is that he's a loner and that he has no family. He's a member of ANBU's Root Division, and first joins Team 7 in the second arc. "Sai", a type of three-pronged dagger, is probably a pseudonym, but who knows? Given Root's... ''special'' methods of training, it might even be his real name.

As one might expect from someone who isn't around people much, Sai doesn't exactly make the greatest of first impressions on his teammates. Indeed, his first actions are to question Naruto's manhood, call Sakura ugly, and diss their former teammate Sasuke. Naruto flatly states that he'll only put up with Sai for Sasuke's sake. He claims to have no personality whatsoever -- being polite or assholish is just a front for him.

A talented artist, Sai claims to have drawn several thousand pictures in his life, but in keeping with his role as the hollow man, finds himself incapable of ever giving one a title. Sai uses his art in his jutsu. He has the ability to animate his drawings, creating creatures for attack or espionage, or generating clones out of ink.

It seems, however, that his purpose is more than just filling out Team 7. In reality, he was given the job by Danzo to assassinate Sasuke -- a task which he's clearly unable to do. He has a change of heart and forms a genuine friendship with Naruto and Sakura, although he's very [[NoSocialSkills socially awkward]] (which is often PlayedForLaughs), though one time cause things to get a little dicey for Team 7 when it came to Sasuke and his unintended actions nearly led to things ending in disaster.

In the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sai was placed in the Ambush Division under Kankuro and alongside Omoi. The events of the war finally enable Sai to fully understand the concept of friendship. [[Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie Two years later, Sai is selected to be part of the team to help rescue Hinata's sister and ultimately save the world]].

Eventually, Sai goes on to marry Ino and in ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' they have one son, Inojin Yamanaka.

->His hobbies are drawing and calligraphy.\

----
* AdvertisedExtra: After his big introduction arc, being brought in as Sasuke's replacement and serving as Danzo's mole, you'd figure Sai would play a large role in the scheme of things? Save for [[ADayInTheLimelight one fight during the war arc]] he's been floating in the background.
* AndIMustScream: One of his techniques, named ''Sealing Technique: Stalking Predator Launch'', consists of an animated drawing of a tiger which can attack the enemy and then go back in the drawing ''with him''.
* AnimalMotifs: Whenever he uses his art ninjutsu, Sai will most likely use lions.
* ArtAttacker: To be able to execute his Super Beast Imitation Drawing technique, Sai carries around a specialized custom scroll to draw on, the scroll's roller has compartments for Sai's ink brush and to hold a supply of ink.
* ArtInitiatesLife: His ability the Cartoon Beast Mimicry; with it he paints ink creatures to assist him in battles including: [[PantheraAwesome Lions and tigers]] for attacking and sealing, [[GiantFlyer birds]] for transportation and aerial assaults, snakes for binding enemies, [[SwarmOfRats rats]] for tracking and even [[Myth/JapaneseMythology The Two Benevolent Kings]] for brute force.
* AuthorTract: Sai serves as Kishimoto's mouthpiece about his own conception of art through his battle against the zombified Deidara and Sasori.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:With Ino. They have a son named Inojin in the epilogue]].
* BigBrotherInstinct: He has gradually been feeling this towards Naruto, which may explain why after watching Naruto get beat up by Karui over Sasuke's crimes, he lost faith in Sasuke being redeemable, and became pretty much supportive of the fact that Sasuke must be taken down.
* BigBrotherWorship: As a child, Sai came to think of fellow Root member, Shin, as an older brother figure and greatly admired him.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler:Temporarily during ''[[Literature/ShikamaruHidenACloudDriftingInSilentDarkness Shikamaru Hiden]]'', having fallen under the thrall of Gengo. Quite fittingly, his main drawing he uses to bind Shikamaru and prisoners with is a massive snake--like Sasuke's main summons for the early part of ''Shippuden''.]]
* BrutalHonesty: At first on account of his [[NoSocialSkills lack of social skills]]. [[CharacterDevelopment Eventually]], just out of genuine concern for his friends, though as a result he can't predict whether his words will hurt others, and many problems are created or solved because Sai, unlike the other teenage protagonists, doesn't pussyfoot around delicate issues like "The promise your best friend made to you when he was twelve is killing him inside" or "Sasuke is too dangerous to be left alive."
* ButtMonkey: In {{Filler}}, having NoSocialSkills made him good comedy material, sometimes getting beaten for an insensitive statement.
* CharacterDevelopment: Sai gradually becomes more sensitive to others and learns about the depths of emotions and bonds.
* ChubbyChaser: Played with, in an Episode of ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' he suggests using Chocho as an art model for the students, calling her "the most beautiful girl of the class", ironically [[spoiler:his wife Ino is very fit]].
* TheComicallySerious: {{Zigzagged|Trope}} between this and DeadpanSnarker. He can't fully understand humor due to his emotionless nature and lack of socialization, so it's hard to tell whether he's using BrutalHonesty, is snarking, or is genuinely confused or serious.
%% * ContainmentField
* CoolSword: Specializes in long-ranged combat with his ninjutsu but is no slouch in taijutsu and swordfighting.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: One of the few characters to have black hair ''and'' black eyes.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: His sealing jutsu is this in the anime.
%%* DarkIsNotEvil: Even when he started off as a jerk.
* DeadpanSnarker: His only reaction to Konohamaru's "reverse" version of the Sexy Jutsu? [[TheComicallySerious "Ah. So that's me."]] More deadpan than snarker, other than insulting Naruto a few times early on.
* DefrostingIceKing: Becomes nicer and attempts to understand the feelings of others after his first mission with Naruto and Sakura.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: He has ''very'' pale skin and is viewed by the others as being disturbing at first.
* EmotionSuppression: Being a member of a special ANBU branch, Sai has undergone a training that removed his emotions. It also left him with NoSocialSkills.
* GoodParents: [[spoiler:Sai has developed strong parenting skills, being the one who's reprimanding Naruto for not holding back enough when he tried to counter Boruto's shadow clone with his own]].
* HatesBeingAlone: [[Literature/ShikamaruHidenACloudDriftingInSilentDarkness Gengo]] reveals he hides an intense fear of being abandoned by his friends. Also, his greatest fear is that Naruto and Sakura prefer Sasuke over him.
* HeroesPreferSwords: While he doesn't use it as much, Sai always carries a tanto.
* HorseOfADifferentColor: His ability to surf on flying ink birds makes him one of the few flyers in the series.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Post-CharacterDevelopment, he tries to become better friends with Naruto and Sakura, but genuinely thinks "ugly" is a good idea for a nickname, and that [[BrutalHonesty people always need to hear the truth]].
* {{Irony}}: Sai, during the Five Kage Summit Arc, believes himself to be the OnlySaneMan when it comes to Sasuke. But after seeing how he made things worse, it's clear that he is the most out of touch when it comes to the situation.
* JackOfAllStats: [[AllThereInTheManual According to the databook]], his skill levels in the various aspects of being a ninja are actually not far from one another. They all range between 3 and 4 (inclusive) out of a maximum score of 5. This makes his skill set ''really'' balanced when compared to the majority of other characters in the franchise.
* {{Jerkass}}: At his beginnings, justified by NoSocialSkills. It progressively fades away with time, but Sai remains the one willing to [[BrutalHonesty bluntly tell the unpleasant truths]].
* JerkassHasAPoint: Sai may have been introduced as an insensitive douchebag, but he did make one valid point: Sasuke ''did'' abandon Konoha and his friends. He went to be a student of Orochimaru's ''willingly''. So, Sai's verbal insults about Sasuke, while harsh to hear (especially from Naruto and Sakura's point-of-view), were ''not'' wrong.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: What he becomes after his first mission with Naruto and Sakura. He's still brutally honest, but it's more innocent than out of sugary malice.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: Really shows in the Five Kage Summit arc concerning to Team 7's relations with Sasuke, See Irony.
* LoveInformant: He tried to be this in the Five Kage Summit arc, with disastrous results.
* LooseLips: Something of a FatalFlaw of his at times, best demonstrated when it almost got Sakura killed at Sasuke's hand during the Five Kage Summit arc.
* MindRape: Being put under Gengo's genjutsu is eventually shown to have inflicted elements of this on him, with Sai's inner self having retreated deep within his psyche, thoroughly traumatized. It takes Ino diving into his mind to release and save him.
* MinionsCustomizedAtCreation: Sai specializes in a ninjutsu style where he makes {{Living Drawing}}s that emerge from the page, then he controls them.
* MrFanservice: Skimpily dressed and has been acknowledged as being handsome InUniverse by both Sakura and Ino.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When he realized that he might have inadvertently helped push Sakura into not only attempting to fool Naruto with her infamous [[FalseConfession fake love confession]] to get him to abandon the chase for Sasuke, but also into trying to take down Sasuke all by herself, an action that would've surely cost Sakura her life, by [[BrutalHonesty bluntly telling her]] [[JerkassHasAPoint how much she and Sasuke make Naruto suffer]], not realizing how desperate and rash she can be in [[BigSisterInstinct her protectiveness of Naruto]]. It's why he lampshades it by telling Naruto about what really happened, along with explaining how it is also his fault in a way.
-->'''Sai:''' ''(Flashback of Sai talking to a distraught-ed and tearing Sakura)'' It's obvious Sasuke's making Naruto suffer, but I think you may be too.\
'''Sai:''' ''(In the present)'' Even though it was not my intent, I pushed Sakura toward this action. It's partly my fault. So I had to tell you.
* MyGreatestFailure: In the anime, he consider his actions during the Five Kage Summit arc to be this, since he believes that the fallout of those actions could've been avoided if he had found another way to resolve the issue, like a true friend.
* MysteriousPast: We only know that he's been in the ANBU for a long time and he's got a dead brother.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: The entire Five Kage Summit arc, on Naruto's end, was made worse by Sai's lackluster understanding of his team and emotions, which led to Sakura attempting a suicide mission to take down Sasuke after ditching her entourage, after making her infamous [[FalseConfession fake love confession]] to Naruto. All because he told her how Naruto felt about her, along with how [[JerkassHasAPoint Sai believes that]] [[BrutalHonesty both she and Sasuke make Naruto suffer]], while she wasn't exactly in the best emotional state after hearing how Sasuke had gone on a international crime spree. Needless to say from his saddened expression as he recalls that conversation, he realized not only he was being far too blunt, but also how he was misreading all the signs.
* NoSocialSkills: In line with the emotion suppression he went through, after breaking away from Root's teachings, Sai primarily interacts with others and tries to befriend them through literal by the book methods, having been researching ways to make friends.
* NotSoStoic: The part where Sasuke, in their first meeting, gives him a DeathGlare that proves terrifying even for Sai.
* OfficialCouple: With [[spoiler:Ino]].
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Technically not his real one, but he prefers going by it.
* OnlyOneName: Unlike his comrades, Sai has no last name. [[spoiler:As an adult, however, he takes his wife's last name to become Sai Yamanaka]].
* OnlySaneMan: On the subject of Sasuke. Having no past relationship with him, and while expressing anger towards him for how his actions had made Naruto suffer, he is (or at least he believes to be) much more rational about what actions should be taken toward Sasuke than Naruto or Sakura, and is quick to point out when the two are sticking their necks out too far for him, though his bluntness and lacking understating of emotions can make things more complicated than they already are, something even he admitted to.
* OppositesAttract: Again, with [[spoiler:Ino]]. He's an EmotionlessBoy that lacks social skills, while she's [[spoiler:highly emotional and socially savvy]].
* OutOfFocus: After his big introductory arc, in which he became the new official member of Team 7, Sai hasn't had much to do at all. This is even more noticeable in the anime during filler arcs, where Sai either stands in the background or doesn't appear at all.
* PaperTalisman: He can create paper bombs by the dozen by painting them.
* ParentalAbandonment: No idea what happened to his folks.
* PrettyBoy: Like [[IdenticalStranger Sasuke]] before him, Sakura and Ino comment that Sai is quite pretty.
* TheQuietOne: Sai doesn't like to talk a lot.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: Noted for being both good looking and [[EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette eerie]].
* ReiAyanamiExpy: NoSocialSkills -- check. Pale-skinned -- check. MysteriousPast -- check.
* RelativeButton: Thanks to his developing a BigBrotherInstinct towards Naruto, Sai has become quite sensitive about anybody harming him in any way. It's part of how in the Five Kage Summit arc, Sai couldn't stop talking rather passionately about how Sasuke must be put down.
* RestrainingBolt: Has a seal on his tongue that prevents him from revealing any information about Danzo, though this disappears after said character's death.
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: He can go toe-to-toe with S-Class criminals twice his age but needs a book that tells him how act tactfully and politely. This is explained as part of his training in Root, which kills emotions and empathy.
* SecretKeeper: For an unspecified length of time between his introductory arc and the aftermath of the Pain Arc, Sai knew about how Naruto had feelings for Sakura, but didn't feel as though he could tell her. However, Sai, knowing how hard Naruto was pushing himself for the sake of his promise to Sakura, decided to break his silence. Though, due to his [[NoSocialSkills lack of emotion experience]] and [[BrutalHonesty disregard for subtlety]], [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone it backfires spectacularly]].
* ShipperOnDeck:
** {{Subverted|Trope}}. He tells Sakura how Naruto feels about her; however, [[JerkassHasAPoint he also points out]] that Naruto's feelings for both Sakura and Sasuke [[BrutalHonesty cause him a lot of emotional pain]].
** Played Straight in ''The Last'' and ''Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4''. In the former, he teases Naruto about his love for [[spoiler:Hinata]] and later, with Sakura and Shikamaru, smiles as Naruto and [[spoiler:Hinata]] share a very tender moment. In the latter, after Sai overhears a conversation between Ino, Tenten, Sakura and Hinata, he thinks that Naruto is a lucky guy to have [[spoiler:Hinata]] because [[NiceGirl she's close to him and cares about him]].
* ShipTease: He called Ino "gorgeous" once, although he actually intended to mean the opposite. [[spoiler:He is married to her in the epilogue]].
* TheSmartGuy: In regards to Sasuke, Sai is a lot more objective and realistic.
* SmokeOut: Sai is very skilled with the body flicker technique, having an ink variant.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: When trying to form new bonds with others.
* StepfordSmiler: Smiles to please those he interacts with despite being emotionless.
* TheStoic: Due to years of suppressing his emotions, Sai is remarkably nonchalant and deadpan for most of his interactions, be they incredibly awkward, intense, or embarrassing.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Sai can be a blunt jerk one minute, and surprisingly sweet the next.
* TookALevelInBadass: During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sai's skills had increased to the point where he could defeat Deidara and Sasori at the same time, leaving them to be sealed. [[Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie Two years after the War]], his skills proved great enough to defeat multitudes of [[BigBad Toneri's]] puppets with ease.
* TookALevelInKindness: After his first mission with Naruto and Sakura, Sai takes a real interest and understanding people's feelings.
* TookTheWifesName: His wife [[spoiler:Ino]] was the sole successor of her clan, which led to him taking on [[spoiler:Yamanaka]] as a last name in their marriage. It probably 'helps' that Sai doesn't remember his original last (or first) name, due to his former Root training.
* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: Telling Sakura that Naruto had feelings for her led to Sakura making her infamous [[FalseConfession fake love confession]] to Naruto and, when that [[ShipSinking utterly failed to work]], attempting a suicide mission to take down Sasuke after ditching her entourage.
* UnreliableExpositor: What he was when he told Sakura about Naruto's feelings for her and [[JerkassHasAPoint how he believes that]] [[BrutalHonesty Sasuke and Sakura made Naruto suffer]], after explaining how much of a novice he is when it comes to the team and emotions. It's only after Sakura's infamous [[FalseConfession fake love confession]] attempt and he learns how she may attempt a suicidal mission to deal with Sasuke out of all-consuming guilt and shame, that he realizes he made a terrible mistake in judgement and made a real mess of things, due to his well-meaning yet unintended blunt misinterpretation of the situation at hand, which is also why he told Naruto through a clone.
* WhatTheHellHero: [[JerkassHasAPoint He calls out Sakura for having Naruto promise to bring back Sasuke for her and expecting him to keep working at it]], when Naruto has feelings for her and [[BrutalHonesty his feelings for both her and Sasuke were causing him a lot of emotional pain]]. Sai compares the binding of this promise to his own abuse at the hands of Root/Danzo. Though this backfired and ended up putting Sakura, and possibly Kakashi, in danger of being killed by Sasuke.
