The daughter of the owner of the Exorcist Supply Shop (Futsumaya) who loves plants. Good-natured and sweet. Demonstrates extensive knowledge of plants. Used to be seen only in a kimono and still has a tendency to wear them. The LoveInterest for both Yukio and Rin. Also, quickly takes a major leap in badass and becomes the second strongest member of the team after ''[[AntiAntiChrist Rin]]''.
----
* AdaptationalWimp: Because the anime cut off before she received her CharacterDevelopment that allowed her to [[TookALevelInBadass take a level in badass]], she doesn't have as many moments to shine.
* AndIMustScream: Chapter 83 retroactively reveals [[spoiler: the entire incident where the larvae controlled her so Amaimon could provoke Rin into a fight during the progression exam was this for her.]]
* ApologisesALot: She tends to easily apologize because of her lack of confidence.
* BadassAdorable: Not only is Shiemi a very cute and sweet girl with an equally adorable companion, but they are also the most effective tamer/demon team of the group and the most versatile members period being able to cover healing, defense and offense equally well.
* BaitAndSwitchSentiment: In Chapter 73, Shiemi tells Rin that she likes him and Yukio. To Rin's surprise, Shiemi denies it when asked if she has a crush on Yukio as she meant she likes them both as friends. [[spoiler:Although, Shiemi soon realizes that Rin is telling her he likes her romantically.]]
* BarrierWarrior: She uses Niichan to grow a tree barrier to hold back a Naberius during the Page exam, and again to protect Bon from the portrait demons in the Seven Mysteries Arc. [[spoiler: Summons a forest to protect herself and the Exwires from getting incinerated by Rin's demon side.]]
* BelatedLoveEpiphany: In Chapter 99.2, [[spoiler:seeing Rin being taken over by his demon side made Shiemi realize how terrified she is of the possibility of losing him forever. With some help from Izumo, Shiemi finally realizes she's in love with Rin. This makes her break down in tears because she thinks it's too late to let him know how she feels because the Grigori Sedes is going to take her away.]]
* BigEater: Is the only one during the camping trip to ask for seconds and spends the day looking around Kyoto mostly eating various things (and even requests only to be able to eat food at the start!).
* BookDumb: Shiemi is very knowledgeable about plants, yet she scores poorly in her first test of Anti-Demon Pharmacology because she wrote down the nicknames she uses for plants in the answers. Once she learns the official names of plants, she does just fine in class.
* BrokenTears: In her debut chapter, she cries over her grandmother's death that she felt at fault for.
* BustContrastDuo: Shiemi has big breasts to contrast Izumo's flat chest.
* CaringGardener: She's the trope image. Ever since she was a young child, Shiemi loved gardening. While Shiemi is a sweet girl, she's also painfully shy and never ventures out of her grandmother's garden until Rin and Yukio intervene. She becomes an Exwire, but still loves plant life and her knowledge in gardening can be useful on occasion.
* ChasteHero: Bewildered by romance and love. Initially says she's "too young" for romance. Izumo gives her shoujo manga to help her understand romance after Rin asks her out.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Nicknames plants and other things (like calling a jacuzzi "pink awa awa") and tends to fall under ComicallyMissingThePoint more than once.
* CombatMedic: She's the only one in the main group capable of healing and utilizes this skill multiple times. She can also kick some serious ass.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: When Izumo laments that she can't believe she's friends with someone like Shiemi, who's "as shameless as a weed", [[InsultBackfire she thinks it's a pep talk]] and vows to become "as strong as a weed".
* CluelessDudeMagnet: She has no idea that she has many male admirers.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Early on she tripped multiple times. Since changing away from her kimono for exorcist duties, this has changed.
* DamselInDistress: During her first appearance she was possessed and needed saving, at least partially from her own misplaced guilt. [[TookALevelInBadass This doesn't happen again]] ([[DistressBall barring the incident with Amaimon]]).
* EarthyBarefootCharacter: When we first meet her, she is seen gardening barefoot and getting her feet - and rather elaborate kimono - quite dirty. She apparently likes doing it that way since her childhood, although she wears shoes otherwise.
* ElementalEyeColors: Her green eyes reflect her nature motif and she has access to GreenThumb power through her Greenman {{Familiar}}.
* ElementalPersonalities: Shiemi is a very gentle, big-hearted, and caring girl with GreenThumb powers.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: The growth of her hair coincides with her development into a badass PluckyGirl.
* ExtremeDoormat: In the beginning, she let Izumo boss her around because of her belief that doing lots of stuff without expecting thanks is how friends treat friends. She grew out of it.
* FanGirl: Of Yukio. Heart-eyes and everything. She slowly gets over it though still admires him.
* FirstFriend: She's the first in the cram school who meets and befriends Rin.
* FlowersOfNature: After she grows her hair out of its bob, she uses flower based hairclips to keep her bangs out of her face. It's natural as she loves flowers, being an expert at gardening. Also, her {{Familiar}} is a small Greenman demon that can grow plants from his body.
* {{Foil}}: To Izumo since while both are tamers but she is friendly and humble, as oppossed to Izumo's abrasive and proud personality. Even their character designs and hair/eye colors are opposite of each other.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Mostly towards any plants, though demons work too.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: Very girly and sweet, loves flowers, but has no trouble getting dirty and is a BigEater. Not to mention is the strongest of the group after Rin.
* HairAntennae: That almost make her look like a bug.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Unlike Ryuji, (the only other Blonde - though dyed - of the main cast) hers is pure gold and pure kindness.
* HeadTurningBeauty: The guys are [[JawDrop utterly gobsmacked]] when they see her wearing something other than her modest, concealing kimono.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Called herself useless alot when she didn't have her familiar.
* HiddenBuxom: Her kimono hid her figure considerably, as seen when she first appears wearing her school uniform. It's complete with bouncing.
* {{Hikikomori}}: At first, she stayed in her garden all day. This was before Rin reminded her of her interest in seeing more of the world.
* HomeschooledKids: Because of her shyness, she was homeschooled until she decided to attend True Cross Academy to learn to make more friends.
* IAmWho: There are several hints throughout the manga that there is a secret to Shiemi's identity and powers that she doesn't know herself. [[spoiler:Apparently, being revealed some of it is so bad that she decides to quit being an exorcist.]]
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Her main motivation is to make friends.
* InnocentFlowerGirl: She's still kind and she still has plenty of knowledge on plants, flowers and the like. She also lives at a herbs/plant shop.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Mainly towards Rin; Shiemi's lack of social skills mixed with Rin's lack of social skills along with her ignorance to his situation and feelings causes this. She's gotten better since the Kyoto arc when she acknowledged her shortcomings there.
* LethalChef: Subverted. The sandwiches she made in Chapter 50 were basically just some herbs between bread and even Yukio couldn't pretend they tasted good, but [[spoiler: it's later revealed that these herbs were what kept the group from getting addicted to the Inari food like all the tourists.]]
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The sweet and naive Light Feminine to Izumo's cynical and aloof Dark Feminine.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Yukio. Chapter 44 reveals that being with Shiemi is the only time he feels at peace.
* LovingAShadow: She used to believe that Yukio was perfect and has always admired him for it, but after witnessing an argument between him and Rin she realizes that that's not the case.
* LuminescentBlush: Blushes in almost every panel she's in.
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Rin is convinced Shiemi has a crush on Yukio, but it's a bit difficult to tell the true nature of her feelings because she's kind and sweet to everyone, openly says [[BaitAndSwitchSentiment she likes all her friends]] and gets easily embarrassed in general. In Chapter 73, Shiemi makes clear her feelings for Yukio are merely admiration and she doesn't feel romantic love for anyone, which comes as a shock for Rin.
* NiceGirl: One of the friendliest members of the cast.
* TheNicknamer: With herbs and other plants. She once failed a test because she didn't use their real names.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Shiemi often ends up too close for comfort, much to Rin's confusion and Izumo's chagrin.
* NoSocialSkills: In the beginning, she has little to no social experience because of her sheltered upbringing. As a result, she repeatedly fails in trying to properly befriend Izumo. She finally suceeds in Chapter 32.
* ObliviousToLove: She genuinely doesn't notice all the {{love triangle}}s that involve her. Justified by the fact she was born very sickly and wasn't allowed to go outside much. Then her grandmother died and she became obsessed with caring for her garden.
* OppositesAttract: With Rin. Shiemi is timid and gentle, while Rin is boisterous and hotheaded.
* PluckyGirl: As part of her character development. She strives to be as determined "as a weed" and tries not to let anything keep her spirits down for too long.
* ThePollyanna: Not even the AlphaBitch can upset her.
* ProneToTears: She tends to tear up easily over sad things (generally involving Rin or Izumo).
* SecretLegacy: [[spoiler:Shiemi is secretly a descendant of Shemihaza, Emperor of Creation. Both her mother and grandmother have been members of the Grigori.]]
* SheCleansUpNicely: She's cute in general, but when all dressed up in her formal kimono she's stunning.
* ShrinkingViolet: At first, she was very shy and withdrawn. She grows out of it and even before she did, she shows signs in her debut chapter of being more outgoing than her shyness first allows.
* SilkHidingSteel: Shown when she completely [[WhatTheHellHero explodes at Rin and Yukio]] when they start arguing infront of her. They were both shocked.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Even though she's slow to realize it, Shiemi is attracted to the best qualities of Rin's personality.
* SquishyWizard: Without her familiar, she's pretty defenseless.
* SummonMagic: She's able to summon a baby Green Man with no training, something that surprises everyone.
* TaremeEyes: Her droopy eyes emphasize her sweet, passive personality.
* TookALevelInBadass: She goes from a ShrinkingViolet barely able to go to school without shaking uncontrollably to a PluckyGirl, who, with her powerful familiar, is able to fight with the best of them.
* TraumaButton: After the experience of being taken over by the Chuchi larvae, meeting Amaimon again brings back some very bad memories for Shiemi.
* UnknowinglyInLove: She likes Rin a lot, but can't tell that her feelings for him are different from friendship due to her sheltered upbringing. She turns down Rin because she wants to work on herself before deciding if she wants to date him, but [[spoiler:she later realizes that she does love Rin romantically.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: Later on with Izumo, though the vitriol really only applies to Izumo because Shiemi is endlessly friendly.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Shiemi does understand familial love, but she has yet to grasp the concept of romantic love. When Rin asks her to be his girlfriend, Shiemi questions what is the difference between liking someone as a friend and as a lover. Izumo tries to help her figure it out by making her read tons of {{Shoujo}} manga.
* WhatTheHellHero: Does this to herself in Das Stärkste Gefängis when she realizes that she was so focused on her own issues that she didn't think about how Rin felt.

[[folder:Ryuji "Bon" Suguro]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KazuyaNakai (Japanese, teenager), Creator/ReikoTakagi (Japanese, child), and Creator/KyleHebert (English, teenager), Creator/PhileceSampler (English, child S1-S2)

[[quoteright:145:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryuji_suguro.png]]

Only child and heir of the Head Priest of the Myoo Dharani sect, which got branded as a "Cursed Temple" due to being a victim of the Blue Night. Ryuji is working to acquire both Aria and Dragoon Meister. He also wants to kill Satan, mainly out of a desire to restore his family's temple. He's a major hot head and struggles often to understand others, though he's working hard to overcome his weaknesses.
----
* AffectionateNickname: [[AvertedTrope Averted]]. He is called "Bon" by his closest friends but that's actually a sign of respect and reference to the fact he's the son of the Head Priest of the Myoo Dharani. Other members use "Ryuji-sama".
* TheApprentice: Becomes one to Lightning in chapter 71, though his friends claim he's more like the man's manager. Ryuji doesn't disagree, but he's sticking it out anyways at a chance of learning useful stuff.
* BadassBookworm: He can memorize an entire book 21 chapters long, and this means he has an arsenal of Fatal Verses.
* BarrierMaiden: During the Kyoto arc, he briefly acted as this to keep the Impure King contained. Rin isn't letting him live it down, either.
* {{BFG}}: Later chapters show him packing a ''bazooka'' and a bandolier holding several reloads of rockets. It's justified, as he's also pursuing a [[TheGunslinger Dragoon Meister]] along with Aria.
* BlushSticker: It must be seen to [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/WHOOOA_BON_2440.jpg be believed]].
* BookSmart: He's a top student in his class and got 98 out of 100 in a test early on.
* CallingTheOldManOut: During the Kyoto arc, he yells at his father for keeping secrets. For how ''that'' went, see NiceJobBreakingItHero below.
* CantHoldHisLiquor: Ryuji passes out drunk after one drink when Shura mixes up the drinks... [[RunningGag again]].
* CharacterDevelopment: Starts going through it during the Kyoto arc, drops it temporarily after, picks it up again during the Inari arc, and the following arc half focuses on how he's acknowledged his deficiencies and is taking steps to address them, most notably by becoming the apprentice of high ranked exorcist Lighting, who he feels has the kind of understanding of people that Ryuji wishes to develop.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: While he's Lightning's student in name, others joke about how Suguro is more like Lightning's manager or mom because Lightning is making Suguro take care of his housework and work schedule for him.
* TheConscience: After becoming the apprentice of Lighting, Suguro witnesses firsthand the sociopathic aspects of the exorcist's personality and he always tries to keep him from going too far. Lightning confesses he [[LackOfEmpathy doesn't have the ability to sympathize with others]] and that's why he wants Suguro to act as his moral compass.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The ''Impure King Revival'' StoryArc sends the cram students to Kyoto, Ryuji, Shima, and Konekomaru's hometown, and in specific his family's past is tied directly into the Impure King. He gets another, shorter bout of limelight when Lightning arrives, resulting in him wanting to become his apprenctice.
** Later gets a bit more focus as he assists Lightning in his investigation.
* DelinquentHair: This plus his FaceOfAThug lead to some people (like Rin) to assuming he is a poor student even though he's anything but. He ditches it in ch72 as a sign of his growing maturity. Keeps the piercings though.
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: Ever since he was young, he defined himself as TheLeader, whether it be towards his friends, the Myouda sect, or whoever. However, following the Impure King incident and especially TheReveal that Shima is TheMole, he's begun to realize that isn't necessarily true anymore, and is having a lot of trouble dealing with that. Lightning's reveal of how one doesn't need a great goal to become an amazing exorcist seems to be helping as is him taking Ryuji in as his apprentice.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Rin has taken to calling Ryuji "Princess" since the Kyoto arc, due to his BarrierMaiden status in that arc. Ironically it fits for other reasons; he certainly is a "spoiled princess".
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In chapter 72 he switches to a different hairstyle. He gets rid of the yellow streak, cuts his hair closer, and shortens his bangs. The result is of a mature and sensible look, which fits as he's [[CharacterDevelopment working]] towards dealing with his flaws and even shows signs of calming down already.
* EyePop: Didn't seem to take Rin seriously when he said Kuro could change sizes.
* FaceOfAThug: Hair of a thug too. Rin's first thought when seeing him is that he must be as poor of a student as Rin is. Bon quickly proves him wrong, being a very well educated and academic man. In fact aside from his aggressive demeanor, he is about as far from a thug as one gets.
* FatalFlaw: His [[HairTriggerTemper temper]] and tendency to takes things ''[[ItsPersonal personal]]'' are his greatest flaws and tend to cause disasters when they both go hand in hand during a situation (see NiceJobBreakingItHero below for details). His lack of [[StreetSmart Street Smarts]] is another thing that gives him grief (early on, he was incapable of noticing how ''odd'' and super strong Rin was, claiming he had no special abilities despite proof otherwise; it takes Rin drawing Kurikara for him to finally get clued in).
* {{Foil}}: Turns out to be one for ''Yukio''. Both are smart scholarship students who have terrible tempers and are admired by others while not being as good as they seem at first. While Ryuji is currently doing his best to work through his [[FatalFlaw flaws]] and improve himself Yukio refused to face his flaws and [[spoiler:is going through an extended crash and burn]].
* GeniusBruiser: Like most Arias he can recite the entire Bible from memory while beating on demons.
* HairTriggerTemper: Has the worst temper of the group and it's his biggest flaw. The calm he shows during certain situations is more of a facade he puts on as his status as TheLeader. He's gotten [[CharacterDevelopment much better]] in later chapters.
* HiddenDepths: Rin immediately assumes that Ryuji's nothing but an angry brute. Turns out he's very smart, hardworking, and loves cleaning and meditation, not to mention he's an eloquent reciter. He's still an [[HairTriggerTemper angry]] [[HotBlooded brute]].
* HotBlooded: Just like Rin, though he is generally calmer, but this can cause conflicts since they can be too similar in this regard. Not to mention cause him to make mistakes at times since his Hot-Bloodness comes from a bad temper.
* ItsAllAboutMe: An interesting variation; Ryuji's tendency to take things personal means he acts as if everything is done against him if it effects him. For example, Rin being the Son of Satan and hiding it from him, and Renzo's choice involving the Illuminati.
* ItsPersonal: Against Satan, for wrecking his family's temple and scaring many people away from it, who believed it to be a cursed place. And it's not the only thing he treats personally (see above).
* FreakyFashionMildMind: Despite the hair dye, he is at the top of his class.
* JerkassRealization: Has this happen ''three times'' before it fully sticks. First during his debut chapter when Rin saves his life from the Leaper, second during Kyoto arc when a "fight" with Rin puts him in the position of being executed, and then finally during Inari when Renzo throws it into his face how he's been acting rather spoiled this entire time. After the last time, Ryuji has started seriously working on fixing his problems and has started to truly get a handle on his temper.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: First appearance he came across as a straight up {{Jerkass}} but ultimately reveals he does care and means well. At the same time, he's quick to take offence, has a serious ItsAllAboutMe problem, and makes many assumptions that aren't true on top of his hot temper. In other words, he works as a [[DeconstructedTrope deconstruction]] of the concept; just because he means well does not mean he's not being a jerk.
* TheLeader: He really ''[[InvokedTrope wants]]'' to be a leader and at times fulfills the role. Ultimately though, he isn't ready to play that part and CharacterDevelopment has him admit to it.
* MoralityPet: Chapter 83 reveals that Lightning wants him to act as one, pulling him back when he goes too far.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** If he hadn't gone after Amaimon with a ''freaking firework'' a lot of Rin's problems with the Vatican probably wouldn't have come into play until much later.
** Takes it even ''further'' in the next arc. Him having an argument with his father gives Rin a flashback to ''his'' dad's traumatic death. Rin's resulting blow up gets him locked up and set for an execution.
** On top of that, Rin's awakened insecurities due to that incident makes it impossible to draw Kurikara to defeat the Impure King for a long time. If ThePowerOfFriendship hadn't come through, not only would casualties been much higher (and likely included not only Ryuji himself but his friends and family), Kyoto would have suffered under a terrible demon plague that might have spread even further by the time the Order could defeat or re-seal the Impure King.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: From Rin and it's lampshaded by Konekomaru and Renzo. Though as time goes on, [[NotSoSimilar the resemblance slides away (revealing it to be mostly a facade)]] and they settle into a more RedOniBlueOni situation. Ultimately, he's more like ''Yukio''.
* PerpetualFrowner: Adding to his intimidating appearance is his never ending scowl.
* PlayingWithFire: In chapter 27, he inherited the red flames of Gouhaen from his father.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: He is always trying to keep everyone together and working as a team. This is [[DeconstructedTrope deconstructed]] at first since pushing people together is not the way to do it.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blunt red oni to Rin's (comparatively) reserved blue.
* TheRival: Towards Rin for the right for kicking Satan's ass, though this attitude fades over time.
* ScholarshipStudent: Because of how expensive his school is, Ryuji had to get this to be able to enter not only the normal classes but be allowed to go to cram school. It's one of the reasons he's so focused on studying.
* SmarterThanYouLook: He looks like a typical delinquent, but he's actually one of the smartest of the cram school students. [[LampshadeHanging Rin is surprized that he gets good scores]].
* SpoiledBrat: Downplayed, but his status as the heir to the Myoo Dharani's position of High Priest resulted in him being coddled compared to his two childhood friends. This results in him being rather sheltered and is partially responsible for his ItsAllAboutMe attitude. CharacterDevelopment has him working through it.
* TameHisAnger: He starts off as the one with the shortest temper next to Rin. Eventually, he learns to keep his cool and not let his emotions get the better of him.
* TeamDad: He serves the "stern, yet caring dad" role to the main group. Rin even jokingly calls him "dad" when Suguro says things a father would.
* TigerVersusDragon: A textbook dragon to Rin's tiger.
** Suguro is rather smart, hardworking, and loves cleaning and meditation, not to mention he's an eloquent reciter, and team work means a lot to him, while Rin is lazy, impulsive, tries to solve everything on his own, and usually with brute force alone.
** At the same time, it's ''Ryuji'' who has the HairTriggerTemper and his tendency to just use book smarts to solve problems isn't a good thing.
* TookALevelInKindness: He always had a good heart, but was rude and judgemental to those around him. As the series goes on, he becomes much more cordial and understanding towards others.

[[folder:Izumo Kamiki]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/EriKitamura (Japanese) and Creator/KiraBuckland (English)

[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/izumo_kamiki.png]]

A stubborn, haughty girl with twintails who initially mocked Shiemi. InstantExpert at calling up {{Familiar}}s, rather skilled in combat.
----
* AcademicAlphaBitch: She's a top student in both normal school and cram school. However, she's mean, arrogant, and looks down on her classmates, even pushing Shiemi around when the latter first tries to befriend her. She eventually mellows out though, becoming more of a LovableAlphaBitch.
* ACupAngst: In the HotSpringsEpisode, she gets irritated at the sight of a naked Shura and Shiemi being more stacked than her, forcing her to admit that she's wearing a push-up bra.
* AllForNothing: She's been living the last five years of her life attempting to protect her younger sister Tsukumo from Illuminati and their human experiments. She goes so far as to agree to become the new Nine-Tailed Fox's host because they will use Tsukumo if she doesn't. The cram school students save Izumo, but her efforts were ultimately in vain, because Tsukumo was under the protection of True Cross all along and now is an adopted daughter of the Takara family. So, for all the trouble Izumo went through, she gained absolutely nothing she was fighting for and loses what few family ties she thought she had left, leaving her unable to do anything but cry over the unfairness of it all to Shiemi.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: When she was a child, Izumo was treated as an outcast at school because other kids assumed Izumo was an AttentionWhore who lied about seeing spirits.
* AmbiguouslyBi: The ones Izumo gets the most flustered by are [[TroubledButCute Rin]] and ''[[PluckyGirl Shiemi]]''. That's without bringing in her [[PseudoRomanticFriendship relationship]] to [[NiceGirl Paku]].
* AnimalLover: She shows a nice side to cats, when no one's around of course. She seems to be fond of dogs, as well.
* BadassAdorable: She can summon two familiars to fight for her (who can in turn summon a tiny, adorable army) and has her cute moments.
* BastardAngst: Izumo's father never married her mother and outright refused to meet her and her sister because he hated children. Eventually, Izumo's mother became neglectful once the father started getting tired of her. Because she couldn't handle being abandoned, Izumo's mother was possessed by the Nine-Tailed Fox. She then attempted to murder her own daughters, all while telling Izumo that it was a mistake giving birth to her if her boyfriend would dump her for it.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: She considers Paku her OnlyFriend because she was the only girl at her school who never made fun of her for seeing spirits and offered her help whenever Izumo needed it.
* BigSisterInstinct: Izumo cares greatly for her little sister. She vowed to protect her and is willing to ''give up her body'' and be possessed by the Nine-Tails, just so the Illuminati won't do the same to Tsukumo instead. [[ExploitedTrope This is exploited.]] Not only do the Illuminati manipulate her with that, '''Mephisto''' does as well, all while Tsukumo is ''perfectly safe'' the entire time.
* BrainyBrunette: She's dark-haired and is at the top of her class.
* BreakTheHaughty: In her first focus chapter/episode, she loses her nerve and it almost leads to her {{familiar}}s turning against her.
* BrokenBird: She decided to never rely on anyone because last time she did she ended up as a prisoner of the Illuminati and being manipulated for years. This left her with quite a few trust issues, to say the least. Her emotional wounds finally start healing by the end of the Inari arc.
* BrokenTears:
** In Chapter 5/Episode 7, she cannot help but weep in shame after not only was she called out by Paku for how she'd been treating Shiemi, but was also completely useless in fighting against the attacking ghoul and protecting her friend as well.
** She completely falls apart at the end of the Inari arc, when not only does her mother die protecting her, but she then visits Tsukumo after five years and she doesn't even remember her.
* BustContrastDuo: She has a very small chest especially when compared to the well-endowed Shiemi.
* ChildhoodFriends: She and Paku went to elementary school together and became friends after Paku helped her carry some boxes.
* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: Does this ''constantly''. Even in Inari with her possessed and most likely going to ''die'' she complains. She only didn't do it once, when Rin rescued her from her Byakko.
* CutenessProximity: Towards Kuro or Dog!Mephisto she loses the haughtiness because of the cuteness.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Chapter 52 gives us a glimpse into Izumo's past and introduces us to her mother; a woman who originally loved her children but her depression after her lover told her to (essentially) chose between him and her children caused her to be [[DemonicPossession possessed]] by the Ninetails Fox, resulted in her trying to ''[[OffingTheOffspring kill]]'' her own children. She also shirked all responsibility for her younger daughter onto Izumo as well due to her WomanChild self.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Following the ''True Cross Academy Fesival'' StoryArc, Izumo gets a lengthy arc centered around her dealing with her DarkAndTroubledPast as a possible container for the Nine-Tailed Fox.
** She later gets some nice bonding time with Shiemi right before things go off the rails again.
** [[spoiler:She and Ryuji were recruited by the Arc Knights to help them go after Drac.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: More than willing to let vitriol loose on people, especially Ryuji.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Izumo starts off as the haughty loner of her class. Slowly, she beings to open up to Rin and her other classmates. By the end of the Inari arc, she has fully accepted them as her TrueCompanions.
* DistressBall: Has caught this ''four times'' so far: First during the exwire exam (getting rescued by Rin), second during the Impure King Arc (getting rescued by Shiemi), third during the festival (getting rescued by Renzo), and finally the Inari Arc is all about rescuing her from the Illuminati. That's right, the [[DeadpanSnarker snarky]] {{Tsundere}} IceQueen is the resident DamselInDistress.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Upon seeing Shiemi about to shed tears for her after hearing the rest of her tragic family life, Izumo lashes out at her, who grew in relative comfort, for trying to sympathize to her situation. Turns out she was crying in relief because Izumo was finally being open to her feelings to her friends.
* EmbarrassingNickname: "Eyebrows", from Rin. Izumo gets annoyed when he calls her that.
* {{Familiar}}: Has a pair of very powerful foxes who almost killed her when they saw [[BreakTheHaughty she wasn't as strong as she seemed]]. They are later "killed" by Shima when she tries to escape the Illuminati compound and then come back when she begs them for strength after her mother dies. However, turns out Shima just ''weakened'' them enough to make it so they were out of the way for a time...
* FamilyThemeNaming: Her name is Izu'''mo''', her mother is Tama'''mo''' and her younger sister is Tsuku'''mo'''.
* {{Foil}}: To Shiemi since while both are tamers she is outgoing and assertive, as oppossed to Shiemi's shy and passive personality. Even their character designs and hair/eye colors are opposite of each other.
* FriendlessBackground: Before meeting Rin, Izumo was never able to make friends with anyone aside from Paku because other kids treated her like a weirdo for seeing things they couldn't.
* GirlishPigtails: Going with her {{Tsundere}} personality, she has the associated long pigtails. It's another contrast with Shiemi, her foil.
* HeroicBastard: She's the daughter of the head of the Inami family and the Kamiki priestess of Inari, who was his mistress. Her parents most certainly were not married even years later when they went on to have her little sister Tsukumo.
* HimeCut: She has blunt bangs, cheek-length sidelocks, and long hair in GirlishPigtails that are as straight and even as a ruler. Fittingly, her family were always {{Miko}} tasked with keeping the Ninetails under control until her mother snapped.
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: [[spoiler:After her mother performs a HeroicSacrifice to save her daughter's life, a tearful Izumo angrily questions why she decided to act like a mother only at the very end.]]
* HumanizingTears: Something harrowing has to occur to break her haughty facade and leave her a tearful wreck.
* IndignantSlap: She slaps Renzou, when she finds out he's helping the Illuminati of his own free will. She then tries to follow it up with a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech, but one sentence from Renzou knocks the fight out of her.
* IneffectualLoner: Whenever she tries to act like a lone wolf who relies on no one but herself, things go badly for her and needs Rin to save her. It takes a lot of time for her to learn it is fine to ask her new TrueCompanions for help.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While rather rude and blunt to those around her, she's also a genuinely good girl. She encouraged Shiemi (in her own way) when the latter has given up and is the first to defend Rin (and for a while, the only one to stand by his side) when it's revealed that he's the son of Satan and all his other friends are uneasy around him. She's also, as part of her development, slowly scratching the "jerk" part off.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The cynical and aloof Dark Feminine to Shiemi's sweet and naive Light Feminine.
* LonerTurnedFriend: She didn't really want to make friends aside from Paku, but she is learning to get along better with the rest of the team.
* {{Miko}}: She becomes one in order to perform an exorcism.
* NomDeMom: She uses her mother's surname Kamiki. Her father Soji was never really there for her or Tsukumo.
* ParentalAbandonment: Her mother went from being loving but self-centered to outright abandoning her and her sister because her lover didn't want to deal with her kids. This caused her to snap and get possessed by the demon she was supposed to keep s
* PerpetualFrowner: When she isn't actively being smug, she's frowning. She's been growing out of it.
* ThePowerOfLove: Heavily hinted that the reason the Ninetails is no longer compatible with her is because she loves her friends and family.
* {{Pride}}: Her biggest flaw, along with her trust issues, is that she has high pride and wants to solve all her problems herself without relying on others. The Inari arc shows just how big a flaw it is when it's shown Izumo would rather do something that will probably kill her than asking others for help. She becomes more humble by the end of the arc, and starts becoming willing to accept help from her friends.
* PromotionToParent: She had to take care of her sister when her mother abandoned them. Even ''before'' that, she was the one mostly responsible for Tsukumo because their mother was a completely unreliable {{Womanchild}}.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Subverted. She has red eyes, but despite acting mean initially, she's one of the heroes and becomes nicer over time.
* RefusedReunion: After being imprisoned by Illuminati, Izumo was separated from her younger sister Tsukumo for years. When Izumo learns that Tsukumo is now Nemu's adopted cousin, she goes to visit Tsukumo, only to get heartbroken when she finds out Tsukumo doesn't even remember who she is (justified, since she was three when they were separated). Izumo then gives up on truly reuniting with Tsukumo and only says goodbye to her.
* ShipperOnDeck: After she starts becoming real friends with Shiemi, she supports Shiemi's relationship with Rin and helps her figure out that she's in love with him. During the final battle with Satan, she encourages Shiemi to confess to Rin and go on a date with him after they win the battle.
* SourOutsideSadInside: She keeps people at arm's length because some terrible experiences drove her to believe nothing good comes out of relying on people. While she acts haughty and self-centered, she's just scared that people might take advantage of her if she trusts them.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: When we get some flashbacks of what her mother looked like before she was possessed by the Nine-Tailed Fox and experimented on by Illuminati, Izumo looks like a younger and flat-chested clone of her.
* SummonMagic: Her foxes spirit {{familiar}}s come when she calls them.
* TakingAdvantageOfGenerosity: When Shiemi asks her to be her friend, Izumo starts asking for a small favor after another under the excuse that's what friends do. This disturbs even Izumo's closest friend Paku. Since Shiemi is so naïve, she doesn't realize she's been taken advantage of until Rin calls her out on how she's letting Izumo treat her like a servant.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She's very aggressive, rude, and short tempered, as well as not afraid to get violent despite only being a [[SummonMagic Tamer]]. She also loves shopping, is a fan of romance shojo manga, and has a secret thing for cute animals like cats and dogs.
* TookALevelInKindness: After the Inari arc, she becomes a lot nicer and friendlier with her classmates especially Shiemi as there's nothing holding her back from opening to them anymore.
* {{Tsundere}}: Harsh type, right down to the [[GirlishPigtails twintails]] and [[ZettaiRyouiki thigh-high socks]]. She's aloof, bossy and arrogant, but on the inside, she's a softie. As part of her CharacterDevelopment, her deredere side comes out more and more often, generally towards Paku, Shiemi and [[ShipTease Rin]]. It's also {{justified|trope}}; Izumo is not prickly for no reason.
* TsurimeEyes: Her sharp eyes befit her aggressive and proud {{Tsundere}} personality.
* UnevenHybrid: She has [[AsianFoxSpirit kitsune]] blood, but it's been diluted over the course of so many generations that she's basically human.
* UnusualEyebrows: Her eyebrows are very thick and resemble dots. Pointed out by Rin who nicknames her "Eyebrows" against her will.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: The serious Izumo had a crybaby {{Womanchild}} for a mother. It's PlayedForDrama in this case; her mother was so unreliable that Izumo was forced to grow up fast and had to raise her baby sister practically on her own.
* WhatTheHellHero: On both receiving and giving ends. Paku gives her one early on for her treatment of Shiemi, and she gives a very mocking one to the other Exwires about their treatment of Rin during her conversation with him on the train to Kyoto.

One of Ryuji's childhood friends from Kyoto. A perverted Buddhist priest with pink hair and entomophobia. The fifth son of his family. As all the spoiler text below suggests, he's [[HiddenDepths much more than he seems]].
----
* AbsurdPhobia: Going against insect-based demons causes him to either freeze up or enter a blind "flight or fight" frenzy (as seen during the camping trip).
* BreakThemByTalking:
** To Izumo, when she's chewing him out for betraying them. Particularly notable since he manages to take the wind from Izumo's sails with only three sentences.
-->"You got mad? That was unexpected. [[NotSoDifferentRemark Afterall, we're the same, you and I.]]"
** Chapter 67 has him doing this to Yukio, reducing him to a break down after he's gone with only a few well chosen words.
** Chapter 80 has him continuing the above to Yukio, revealing he's the one who told Mephisto about his suicidal training and instead of that gambit he pulled with Hachiro, he should just join Illuminati.
** Noticeably [[AvertedTrope averts]] this [[spoiler:in chapter 96 as one look at Yukio reveals he's so far gone that nothing Renzo could say could affect him.]]
* ButtMonkey: He's a common target of slapstick comedy. He gets his ribs broken after laughing at Amaimon, being told to walk through a bug swamp despite being incredibly phobic, etc. After being revealed as a [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass Illuminati double-spy with a powerful Wisdom King familiar]], the Exwires comically sweep him with a broom / summon familiars / burn his clothes off in pay back.
* ChivalrousPervert: Takes every opportunity he can to flirt with a woman.
* TheChosenOne: In regards to the Shima family, he's the one who's been blessed with Yamantaka and his black flames. Mephisto outright calls him such in fact.
* TheCorrupter: Is serving as one towards Yukio, as he was ordered to do by the Illuminati. He follows Yukio around in secret and always seems there to push him towards the Illuminati whenever Yukio's morale is shaken. However, at the end when [[spoiler:Yukio does his FaceHeelTurn, he notes he wasn't actually really needed as Yukio was so much TheCorruptible he basically did it all to himself]].
* CowardlyLion: His childhood friend Konekomaru was always afraid Renzou would abandon them. However, in the Kyoto arc he came back to save Konekomaru.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass:
** When called to deliver Izumo to the Illuminati, he summons a high-level Wisdom King demon that has apparently been his Familiar since childhood. Later he uses the same flame-based techniques that his older brothers in the Shima clan showed in the Kyoto arc.
** He appeared to have annihilated Izumo's fox familiars within seconds. It turned out he's ''TheMole'' and DoubleAgent hired by Mephisto and has been faking BOTH sides as part of his cover, ''and he volunteered''.
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: He said he chose the Aria meister because Ryuji and Konekomaru were pursuing Aria Meisters, despite how the Knight class suits him better with his khakkara. Konekomaru calls him out on this. After his affiliations with the Illuminati and Mephisto were revealed, it looks like he found it working as a spy.
* DissonantSerenity: Despite his reveal as a Mole, he maintained his easygoing, laidback attitude, but with that same tone he flat out tells Izumo that he '''hates''' everything, and is very comfortable with telling Lucifer that Rin's weakness is his capacity to love humans. He seems okay with sending Izumo to her FateWorseThanDeath, and before that, apologizes to his friends and says goodbye to them as if he didn't just kidnap Izumo. Considering his status as a Double Agent, he probably deliberately [[InvokedTrope invoked]] it.
* DoubleReverseQuadrupleAgent: He's the Shima clan's and Mephisto's spy in the Illuminati, who have him enrolled in Cram School to spy on the True Cross Order and Izumo in particular. He also may have some genuine loyalty to his classmates, as demonstrated by him going out of his way to spare Izumo's familiars, but at the same time, the Illuminati knows this and sent him to back to spy for them in the True Cross Order, which he seems to do. So really, it's anyone's guess.
* FakeDefector: Revealed to be TheMole working for the exorcists. He asked for the job.
* FamilyThemeNaming: His older siblings are named Kinzou and Juuzou. Later on, we find out his father Yaozou and his late eldest brother Takezou fall under this as well. The middle sibling is also named Gozo, and it fully seems to be something all the guys in his family get.
* TheGadfly: Renzo shows at times a fondness for teasing and poking people, just so he can laugh.
* HatesEveryoneEqually: While talking to Izumo and being recorded by Illuminati cameras, he said that he hates everything, except ladies. How much that is true is unknown, but Renzou certainly doesn't fit with the usual mound for the Shima family and Myoo Dhra as well.
* ItAmusedMe: His entire reason for being a spy boils down to it being fun. Considering he's been merely following family tradition and showed more than once to be unhappy with his chosen role, picking something personally just for "fun" is [[JustifiedTrope justified]].
* LadykillerInLove: Same as the above, he does genuinely have at least a big crush on Izumo despite claiming to love all women.
* LastNameBasis: Even his childhood friends Konekomaru and Ryuji only call him by his last name. When Ryuji does call him by his first name, it's during a [[TheReveal very serious moment]]. An omake reveals the reason for this is that he used to do embarrassing things as a kid and so Ryuji and Konekomaru didn't want to act familiar with him.
* LetsGetDangerous: His response to Izumo being threatened by Takara is to stop holding back and go all out; but it's all an act...
* LovableCoward: Contemplates running away most of the time. But he still ultimately pulls through.
* MartialArtsStaff: His weapon of choice, leading Konekomaru to think he would make a good knight meister.
* AMatchMadeInStockholm: In the Inari arc, Renzo kidnaps Izumo as part of his mission as Illuminati's DoubleAgent. Even though he was willing to let his fellow Exwires believe he was a traitor, Renzo is genuinely attracted to Izumo and might have a crush on her.
* NonconformistDyedHair: He dyes his hair pink, much to his father's chagrin, as a way to rebel against his family for forcing him to assume the duties that his dead older brother was supposed to be responsible for.
* NunTooHoly: Despite being raised in a temple and training to be a monk and exorcist it doesn't seen to stop him from trying to flirt with every girl he meets, especially around Izumo. {{Lampshaded}} by Konekomaru...
* PlayingWithFire: He can summon a creature which uses black flames to burn demons and human souls.
* PowerStrainBlackout: He can summon Yamantaka, but it's a strain and using too much can knock him out for hours.
* RoseHairedSweetie: He dyes his hair pink to match his outgoing, positive, flirty and friendly persona.
* SayItWithHearts: When speaking to freaking [[BigBad Lucifer]]! While giving him a double peace sign and goofy grin.
* ShapingYourAttacks: He has used his black flames to form a spear tip, a buzzsaw-like wave and even paper-thin spikes of fire that erupt from the ground.
* StepfordSmiler: He has a happy, cheery demeanor, but has expressed issues. While talking to Izumo and being recorded by Illuminati cameras, he said that he '''hates''' everything, [[MyFriendsAndZoidberg except]] the [[ChivalrousPervert ladies]]. How much that is true is unknown, but Renzo certainly doesn't fit with the usual mould for the Shima family and Myoo Dhra. Not to mention appears to on some level ''despise'' his deceased elder brother Takezo.
* SummonMagic: He can summon Yamantaka, a very high-level demon made of black flames. According to Shima, he's been able to call him up since he was a child.
* SuperStrength: From WordOfGod, summoning Yamantaka increases Renzou's physical strength, allowing Renzou to send Rin flying with a single swipe of his khakkhara.
* TheUnfavourite: He gets berated for his pink hair, kicked by one brother and then hit again before he leaves, is told constantly to watch over Ryuji, his mother threatens him...It's generally PlayedForLaughs.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's impossible to talk about him without bringing up the fact he's a DoubleAgent and previously was TheMole.
* WhamLine: Usually from when he does BreakThemByTalking.
** "Okumura, a piece of advice. From now on, you'll need to be prepared to kill humans if you want to win."
** "You got mad? That was unexpected. [[NotSoDifferentRemark After all, we're the same, you and I.]]"
** "And it's because I'm an ally, I could you give that advice. You know, the same could be said to you. Shouldn't you consult someone about this matter?
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: In the Kyoto arc, he briefly abandons Koneko to the Impure King because he was fed up with "blood obligation", but runs back to save him because Koneko is still his friend.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: His entomophobia is a recurring personal problem.

The other of the Kyoto trio. He's a short priest with a shaved head and a timid nature. Good at reciting scripture, though not nearly at the level that Ryuji can. He's also the smartest of the team, though it takes time for him to really start speaking his mind and applying his brains properly.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Cats. His name, his design, his likes, and his dislikes all go along with this.
* AwesomeMcCoolname: Rin thinks his name is awesome.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: His judgment is based mostly on observation, allowing him to suggest prudent actions that turn situations around. It's best displayed in his ''awesome'' TheReasonYouSuckSpeech towards all the other Exwires, where he reveals just how observant he is.
* BadassAdorable: Short, nerdy, [[KindHeartedCatLover loves cats]] and is probably the ''[[TheSmartGuy smartest]]'' of the group, to the point he's shaping up to be TheStrategist. Not to mention managed to give a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to ''everyone'' in his class, something they all seriously needed.
* CompassionateCritic: During the battle with the cursed picture in the school gallery, Konekomaru gives harsh yet valid critics about the dysfunctions of his teammates so they understand why they must overcome their personal flaws and learn to work as a team.
* {{Determinator}}: Definitely the physically weakest of the main Exwires, but the guy ''refuses'' to give up, especially when people he cares about are in danger.
* DrivenToSuicide: Nearly, when he thought he was going to be eaten by the chimera zombies. [[{{Determinator}} He got better]].
* TheGenericGuy: Compared to everyone else, Konekomaru is very ordinary. If his classmates weren't who they were (which includes the Son of Satan) he would have ended up as just another exorcist. As is, he's taking levels of badass in response to his surroundings.
* HappilyAdopted: By his best friend's family no less.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Initially the guy basically thought he was useless, but he's been steadily increasing his confidence since what happened with the family portrait.
* JerkassBall: Briefly, after discovering Rin was the son of Satan. It wasn't so much that he became a jerk though, as being straight-up terrified of Rin, to the point where he thought it was dangerous to be around him. He gets better though, [[FriendshipMoment following a pretty sweet moment with Rin]].
* KindheartedCatLover: He even carries a cat toy with him in case he sees any strays or Kuro.
* MutualEnvy: Renzou says that he would like to have no living relatives like Konekomaru so he could just leave the Myoo Dha and live like he would like somewhere else. In response, Konekomaru says he envies Renzou for having a big family and inheriting the high-class demon of black flames. Both joke that they were born into the wrong families.
* NerdGlasses: He wears "cat-eye" glasses to make him look nerdy.
* NiceGuy: Polite and kind to everyone. Suguro points out that he has a habit of keeping his emotions buried to avoid hurting other people's feelings.
* ParentalAbandonment: His parents both died on the Blue Night.
* ThemeNaming: Let's see, loves cats, drinks hot milk every day, hates being cold. His first name almost literally translates to 'Circle of Kittens'.
* ShorterMeansSmarter: The smartest guy of the main group is also the shortest one.
* TheShortGuyWithGlasses: One of the shortest males in the cast and the one with glasses. [[ShorterMeansSmarter He's also one of the most book-smart characters seen]] and the main MrExposition.
* ShrinkingViolet: In how he tends to keep his feelings bottled up.
* TheSmartGuy: His main role on the team is using his smarts. That's why he's MrExposition.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: He's got a lot of knowledge and is the only one in the main cast who wears glasses.
* TheStrategist: He becomes and tells his teammates how to better ulitize their skills for greater tactics.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: He makes everyone realize their faults in order to improve on them to better their teamwork.
* TookALevelInBadass: After the incident above, he starts making strides in being awesome.

One of the cram school students. He doesn't talk, instead uses a Bunny Rabbit puppet to communicate ''rudely'' to the others.
----
* DeepSleep: Since his puppet said "Nemu go back to sleep" immediately after [[EyesAlwaysShut Takara]] [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness opened his eyes]] during the fight with Shima that may mean that he has been sleeping through every cram class, conversation, and event he has been present for so far.
* DontWakeTheSleeper: At least his hand puppet seems to think so, since even briefly waking up caused it to tell Takara to go back to sleep.
* {{Expy}}: He is OlderThanHeLooks, is often involved with toys, and is an InsufferableGenius. Basically, he's [[Manga/DeathNote Near]] if he traded being a detective for being an exorcist.
* EyesAlwaysShut: He never opens his eyes, adding to his unusual and mysterious appearance. Justified since he doesn't need to see since he is asleep while his demon possessed puppet controls him.
* LastNameBasis: No one ever uses his first name since they don't know him well enough.
* MarionetteMaster: An unusual variety of Tamer, able to summon and control dolls. At least, that's what the demon controlling ''him'' claims he is.
* MeaningfulName: The name Nemu can mean "Sleep" and if his puppet is to be believed then in every scene of him so far Takara has been asleep.
* TheQuietOne: He rarely speaks but when he does it is only through his puppet.
* RedHerring: Incredibly suspicious kid older than the other cram students and possible more powerful than he should be? Gotta be TheMole... except he isn't. Though that doesn't mean he's in the clear, as now the audience must wonder what a "Coordinator" means here.
* {{Sleepwalking}}: In a matter of speaking, since his demon has been controlling Takara's body while he's asleep.
* WalkingSpoiler: Since he's so mysterious and weird, a lot of his information is about his role as the class supervisor working for Mephisto, which gives away he isn't the Illuminati spy as suspected early on.

* DemonicDummy: Bonus material reveals Nemu's puppet is a Galatea, a type of demon that possesses dolls. The puppet is actually serving as the host of the demon who is controling Takara.
* HandPuppet: It's a hand puppet that looks like a pink rabbit.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's very rude and talks down to the exorcist students like they were idiots.
