!Heroes
[[folder:Abigail]]
!!Abigail

A mysterious gunslinger who wakes up in a coffin at the beginning of the story. She has no memory of who she was or how she got into the coffin. A meeting with the Southern Witches sets her on the path to end the world, a goal she feels is right.
----
* AmnesiacHero: Abigail wakes up with no memory of her past, no knowledge of her name, nor any practical day to day info (like how to sleep or open bottles). Though, per the trope, she's an excellent fighter and gunslinger.
* GaiasVengeance: Several characters have labeled her as this. Viewing her as a personification of the world they live on meant to enact revenge for all of the harm that King Dang has inflicted on the planet. Abigail herself isn't sure.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: In part because of naivety. One of her very first actions was to gun down a random witch after being startled and she only steps in to save the town of Krud because she couldn't open a bottle.
* HopeBringer: Abigail inspires a lot of people even forming a team because even though she struggles with morality people are inspired by that struggle and by her attempts to be better. [[spoiler:The Witch]] is repulsed by this development.
-->"You've given people hope! That's the last thing any of those peons need!"
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Abigail can be really harsh and selfish but as the comic goes on she shows more and more of her caring side. She really does value Daniel as a friend and as she sees more and more of the world she learns to be more empathetic to others.
* LockedIntoStrangeness: [[spoiler:After taking control of the planet to flick the Cool Witch and Dang off the planet, some of her hair turned white from the effort of doing so.]]
* NoSocialSkills: Most of her rude behavior isn't out of malice, but from genuinely not knowing or understanding social cues.
* SuperStrength: Her mysterious strength allows her to rival the serum enhanced minions of the King. [[spoiler:It makes sense as she was born from the world entity that the empowering blood came from]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Daniel]]
!!Daniel

A young Druid in training from the town of Krud. After a lot of disrespect from his order, he leaves to travel with Abigail, wanting to set her on a better path.
----
* ActionSurvivor: Compared to the fight capable Abigail, Daniel isn't nearly as strong. He has been able to hold his own in fights usually improvising or outsmarting his enemies; often dealing with them in less direct ways than the other combat able characters.
* AllLovingHero:
-->'''Daniel''': "This place is so dumb."
-->'''Abigail''': "Is it not worth saving then?"
-->'''Daniel''': "No!... Everything has a worth to '''someone''' Abigail.
* CrisisOfFaith: Pre-series he felt himself slipping from his faith. He joined the Coven to find his place in the world but got little in terms of direction from them. Seeing Abigail defeat the Tummy Boys caused Daniel to find faith in her.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Daniel's a kind empathetic character who tries his best to do the right thing.
[[/folder]]

!The Witches
[[folder:The Cool Witch]]
!!The Cool Witch

The leader of the Southern Witches who finds Abigail when she gets out of her coffin. It's them who tells Abigail of her quest to end the world and occasionally shows up to give their guidance. The Witch's true agenda remains a mystery for much of the comic as they are in contact and coordinates with King Dang yet also backs Abigail's quest against him.
----
* AmbiguouslyEvil: The witch plays their cards close to their chest and doesn't reveal their motives until late into the comic. Many of their actions appear sinister and they both help and hinder King Dang. [[spoiler:It turns out they're actually seeking to bring about the apocalypse out of boredom.]]
* EvilerThanThou: [[spoiler:The Witch is far worse than any other villain in the comic and holds the sentimentality and self-preservation of all of the other characters in contempt. They had reportedly tried to ally with the Tummy Boys, Crannie, and Queenie in their agenda but they all turned them down. When King Dang admits to having regrets over the mining they dismiss him as weak]].
* ImmortalityImmorality: The Witch is a lot older than they appear and something of an unempathetic jerk to everyone. [[spoiler:Their long life has made them grow bored and they scheme to cause the apocalypse because the world has stopped progressing and become stagnant. They believe their need to be entertained ultimately trumps the needs of all other life to continue existing]].
* SuperStrength: Not apparent at first, but they're surprisingly strong. [[spoiler:They, like Abigail, were born from the planet itself. The planet's blood empowers Dang and his men, and as an entity created from the planet they have that empowerment naturally]].
* WalkingSpoiler: They're one of the comic's first characters and the one whose true nature remains a mystery for the longest amount of time. It's not until the finale that the audience learns [[spoiler:that they're the BigBad, an entity born from the planet much like Abigail]].
[[/folder]]

!The Kingdom
[[folder:King Dang]]
!!King Dang

The king of the country and the central antagonist of the comic. Dang is an eccentric maniac with a grip on the country that's weaker than it first appears but still dangerous to everyone. He is mining a mysterious substance from the ground and is set on stopping Abigail from her quest.
----
* BewareTheSillyOnes: King Dang is a wacky character who's done serious damage to the world. It's best emphasized in his conversation with Princess Darn where the tone flips from goofy to serious [[spoiler:and she breaks her hand punching him, displaying how powerful he is]].
* BigBad: The main antagonist in the strip, at least at first. As the story goes on, more and more parties become major players fighting for the role of the lead villain. Still, it is through his hand that much of the common people are suffering and he empowers numerous villains in the series.
* FauxAffablyEvil: King Darn is a whimsical and strange old man as well as a violent mood swinger and tyrant. He'll rattle off about his eccentricities in the same quirky tone he'll describe an especially painful torture method or death threat.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:He keeps the Cool Witch occupied long enough for Frick to escape the castle's departure.]]
* IJustWantToBeLoved: As the comic goes on, it's clear that Dang's AttentionWhore tendancies come from a lonely man with a sincere need to be liked. Even his flippant chaotic attitude is shown to be at least partially an act; a way to cultivate an image of a feared ruler that he could never comfortably inhabit.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When [[spoiler:Abigail's mission goes public]], King Dang refuses to comment on the situation to the press. One news anchor noting that it's out of character for the usually flamboyant King.
* TopHeavyGuy: [[spoiler:Upon taking a large dose of the planet's blood Dang's upper torso grows immensely powerful and muscular. His lower torso doesn't, but his legs get longer making him look less disproportionate]].
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: He tries to cultivate this image for himself in part because he's an AttentionWhore. It seems to have been effective in the past but in the present, his popularity with the people has waned especially in the southern towns.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Frick]]
!!Frick

The King's Right Hand Man (on account of him having two right hands). Frick oversees the affairs of the Kingdom and tries his best to steer Dang's evil schemes on track even if he's denied the whole picture.
----
* {{Determinator}}: Frick is a determined man. When fighting [[spoiler:The Cool Witch]] he's severely outclassed but keeps getting back up to attack them. After having his guns knocked away he uses a knife, after losing the knife he uses a club, after being thrown into the bathroom he get's back out and hits his attacker with a toilet seat.
-->[[spoiler:'''The Witch''']]: "You're just as persistent in your stubbornness as the King can be, you know!"
* TheDragon: He's essentially the second in command to King Dang and works directly under him.
* DualWielding: He dual-wields twin revolvers with both of his right arms.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He's disturbed by the King's speech about ticks. When he calls Queenie he makes sure to ask about [[spoiler:Princess Darn]] and if she's ok. Queenie says she is though it's implied she forgot to feed her.
* HairTodayGoneTomorrow: A flashback shows a younger Frick had a full head of luscious hair during the early days of his employ under Dang. In the present, all that's left of it is a small tuft he keeps under his hat.
* HyperCompetentSidekick: Though King Dang rules Goodness, Frick is the one who handles administrative duties. He tries to play a rational role to the eccentric madman.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives a cutting one to King Dang when the Kingdom starts going to hell.
-->"What would you even do, if the time comes? Have you acted on instinct alone all these years, with no real plan? Did you think you could ride this out without it ever coming to a stop?... Then I'm going to go to Odious to finish this. And whether I return or not you will have to face someone who will demand change. Will you stand up to that?"
* SelfRestraint: [[spoiler:The epilogue shows that he's voluntarily keeping himself behind bars.]]
* SeriousBusiness: Numbers. Frick stresses the importance of bookkeeping and statistics.
* UnfortunateNames: Like many characters in the strip, he's got a silly name. It's even referenced when Dang drops a profanity with the F-word speech bubble cutting to Frick.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Princess Darn]]
!!Princess Darn the 26th/[[spoiler:Emily]]

In order to placate the people, Darn has a princess elected for citizen morality. They tend to get under his skin eventually and he has them jailed. The current Princess Darn is the 26th one placed in the position and she schemes against the King and his henchmen.
----
* ActionGirl: She's quite acrobatic and strong; she's basically a secret agent. [[spoiler:In the finale she manages to take down a number of the King's Elite Knights]].
* OnlySaneMan: One of the characters most grounded in reason in the comic. Though she's not above her own comical eccentricities.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tummy Boys]]
!!Burpo & Sippus

Burpo and Sippus are a gassy duo of tax collectors for King Dang. They appear in the town of Krud to extort the people.
----
* ArcVillain: Of the first story arc, "I, Burpo."
* EvenEvilHasStandards: [[spoiler:It's revealed that Burpo actually encountered Abigail before the series when she was in a coffin being carted through their town. Though he's unaware of who's in the coffin he brings Daniel over to give a small eulogy]].
-->'''Burpo''': "Say some nice words for the departed. Seems only fair."
* {{Gasshole}}: Per their names, their main source of power is their upset tummies. Their burps have powerful blast ranges and acidic qualities.
* MyGreatestSecondChance: [[spoiler:Both Burpo and Sippus regard [[RaiseHimRightThisTime being turned into babies]] to be this for them, as they were lucky to be given a second chance at life by the people in Krud.]]
* NarratorAllAlong: [[spoiler:PlayedForLaughs when it is revealed the narrator of the WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue is Sippus.]]
* RaiseHimRightThisTime: After Abigail uses [[BlandNameProduct off-brand Pepto-Bismol]] to cure their upset stomachs, the two of them explode and revert back to being babies. The bartender in Krud becomes their caretaker.
* SiblingTeam: They're a pair of villainous brothers enforcing Dang's will.
* StarterVillain: The first major villains of the comic.
* WeaksauceWeakness: With their powerset revolving around flatulence and upset stomachs, they're defeated by a Pepto-Bismol BlandNameProduct.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Pee Boy]]
!!Pee Boy

An agent of King Dang. Pee-Boy has taken over Cripes, a once-thriving town on a lake, and dried the whole place up. His spongelike body allows him to absorb water with ease and he's made liquid illegal in the town.
----
* AnArmAndALeg: He removed his right arm to serve as a kind of secretary for him. When he goes to fight Abigail and Daniel he reattaches it.
* ArcVillain: PlayedWith. He's the main source of conflict for Chapter 4 "The Whale", but [[spoiler:he's smashed by the clown who transforms into the titular whale and is the main fight for the arc]].
* AsteroidsMonster: [[spoiler:After Pee-Boy is crushed, he splits into a number of smaller docile versions of himself. The Clown calls one Little P while Crannie calls them the Pee Boys]].
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler:His defeat is quite sudden and not only is his body crushed by a giant whale but so is his importance. He simply ceases to be a major figure in the plot and the heroes need to fight the clown instead]].
* MakingASplash: His absorption of liquid allows him to blast it out for water-based attacks.
* RedBaron: Pee Boy "The Wet Sheriff".
* ShoutOut: When Abigail recounts her fight with Pee Boy he's depicted as ''WesternAnimation/SpongebobSquarepants''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Dead Man]]
!!Dead Man/[[spoiler:Damned Heat]]

An agent of King Dang, Dead Man looks like a corpse in a wheelchair. Dead Man has conquered the town of Accursed and has turned everything into a play. The different townsfolk have all been forced to take on roles in the town and there is a hard law against improvising. [[spoiler:In reality, he's not actually a corpse but rather a speedster by the name of the Damned Heat. He's using the King's authority to turn the town into his own little stage play]].
----
* AgonyOfTheFeet: His defeat comes from [[spoiler:Abigail flinging his guillotine blade at him, slicing his feet off]].
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Abigail chops his feet off and they're reattached (badly as there is no real doctor in the town) at his arc's end. He shows up later, still in the wheelchair, but his feet have been bandaged and reattached better]].
* ArcVillain: Of Chapter 6, appropriately titled "Dead Man."
%% Doesn't explain what the reaction is. * BerserkButton: Improvising. Stick to the script or else he'll lose it.
* EasilyForgiven: PlayedForLaughs [[spoiler:All of the townspeople are completely happy with him running the town. They are grateful for the roles he gave them because they felt it gave their lives meaning. Even Mrs. K, who he nearly beheaded, admits that she would have been happy to have done it if it made the story better]].
* {{Expy}}: [[spoiler:His blue skin, spiky hair, red sneakers, SuperSpeed and long, pointy nose are extremely remniscent of Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog.]]
* FlashStep: What was thought to be teleportation is actually this.
* HiddenDepths: The epilogue reveals him to be a talented card player and his ability to count said cards has lead to him being banned from Crannie's casinos.
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:The guillotine blade he uses to nearly kill Mrs. K is used against him to cut his feet off]].
* MeaningfulName: He looks like a corpse, though Daniel wonders if he's actually dead. [[spoiler:He's not. He's just disguised himself to look like a dead body.]]
* ObfuscatingDisability: [[spoiler:In order to hide his true nature, he sits around in a wheelchair.]] Once [[spoiler:Abigail chops off his feet, he becomes disabled for real.]]
* WalkingShirtlessScene: He wears no shirt.
* WalkingSpoiler: Unlike Pee Boy and The Tummy Boys, the climax of the Dead Man's arc turns everything about the character on its head.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sherlock Holmes]]
!!Sherlock Holmes

An investigator hired by King Dang to track down the missing Princess Dang and later Abigail. He's terrible at his job.
----
* ButtMonkey: Nothing goes well for him. In order to lure Princess Dang out of hiding, he traps himself in a barrel and goes over a waterfall, hoping that the spectacle will cause her to see what's going on. He nearly drowns and then tries to do it again.
* HarmlessVillain: An agent of the king who really can't do much other than embarrass himself and accidentally foil his plans.
-->'''Knook''': "Sherlock Holmes. He works for the King, but he's harmless and has a gambling problem."
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Crannie]]
!!Crannie

A bombastic showwoman in charge of Daggum. Crannie runs the casinos and shows under the watchful eye of the King. When Abigail enters the town she sets about trying to capture her. Crannie's girlfriend, Knook, is secretly a member of the Society of Clocks.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Spiders. She's got four arms and there's a recurring characteristic of her ensnaring people be it through gambling or trapping Abigail in the game.
* ArcVillain: Of Chapter 10, "Set My Soul On Fire".
* BigBeautifulWoman: She's got several admirers in her crowd, if the signs they hold up are any indication.
* FatAndSkinny: Knook is extremely thin, while Crannie is quite rotund.
* HiddenDepths: Chapter 11 reveals that it was Crannie who came up with the Princess Picking Ceremony. The current Princess Darn expresses annoyance that it strayed so far away from Crannie's original vision.
* LightningBruiser: When she finally steps into the ring with Abigail. She moves fast and hits hard giving Abigail one of her hardest fights up until that point.
* MultiarmedAndDangerous: Crannie has 4 arms and is an especially dangerous fighter. Knook mentions that drinking the potion from King Dang allowed her to grow the 4th.
* NoblewomansLaugh: When she first meets Abigail face to face, complete with a gloved hand over her own mouth.
* PunnyName: Her and Knook's name are a pun on "Nook and Cranny."
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Compared to all of the other villains, Crannie's iron-fisted rule is quite popular because of her showmanship and celebrity status. The Tummy Boys and Pee Boy abuse their subjects and ran their towns into the ground while Dead Man's rule amongst his subjects is an odd relationship with odd people. Even King Dang's popularity is waning and Queenie wasn't able to generate a fraction of the good-will that Crannie has. Though she accidentally blew the conspiracy to the public she was still able to use her star power to turn Abigail into a HeroWithBadPublicity.
[[/folder]]

!Queenie's Boys
[[folder:General]]
A gang run by Queenie out of the town of Odious. They all wear religious clothing and operate out of an orphanage (many of them even grew up in it).
----
* TheFamilyThatSlaysTogether: More than a few of Queenie's Boys are children that she raised in her orphanage. Eenie, Meanie and Teenie are implied to be her biological children.
* FamilyThemeNaming: All of the high-ranking members of Queenie's Boys (implied to be her children) have a name that ends in "-eenie", including Queenie herself.
* GangOfHats: They've got an old-fashioned religious/pilgrim theme to them.
* NonIndicativeName: Though they're called "Queenie's '''Boys'''", the gang is comprised of both men and women.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Queenie]]
!!Queenie

An especially cunning and powerful agent of King Dang. She leads a gang out of Odious, but her reach extends much further, more than any of the other King's Sheriffs.
----
* AnimeHair: Her hair is shaped like that of an onion, giving her a distinct silhouette.
* ArcVillain: Of Chapter 11, "Like a Hurricane." Though unlike the other {{Arc Villain}}s, Queenie was established much earlier as a more significant threat.
* CreepyLongFingers: Her fingers are extremely long and her hands are quite big.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: King Darn notes that she's the only Sheriff to have refused the blood that makes the others so powerful and has managed to rule her own city in spite of that. When fighting Abigail, Queenie states that she does take a little bit of the serum granting her strength and durability but she also shares it with her minions empowering them as well.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Her gang is comprised of the children who grew up in her orphanage and she's concerned for their health and well-being. [[spoiler:Even the current Princess Darn was one of her children and she's proud of her for her ambitions. Though their relationship is difficult she does still seem to care about her brother, Frick, and they make up at the end of Chapter 11]].
* FemmeFatalons: She's got large claw-like hands. They receive a lot of focus when the rest of her is in the shadows.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Her glasses get a very unique focus compared to all of the other bespectacled characters. They stand out as two ominous circles of light against her dark silhouette. When she's revealed in full her eyes are easy to see through her spectacles compared to most other glasses-wearing characters whose pupils are concealed. They add a lot to her already expressive face.
* FreudianExcuse: PlayedForLaughs briefly.
->'''Queenie:''' YOU STEPPED ON MY PIZZA WHEN WE WERE KIDS AND I'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!!!\
[[spoiler:'''Frick]]:''' ...I was just trying to make you laugh...\
''[Queenie pauses before blushing out of embarrassment]''
* KnightTemplar: Compared to the other Sheriffs, Queenie's driven by ideology more than greed. [[spoiler:She knows of the truth of the world, that their planet is on the back of a sleeping giant. What's more, she sees the end that the cowgirl promises them as just punishment for the drilling and harvesting of its blood. She wants to overthrow Dang and defeat Abigail to bring the world back into balance on her own terms]].
* NeverMessWithGranny: Quite an older woman, having raised her gang to adulthood, but one of the most dangerous fighters Abigail has faced. [[spoiler:Interestingly enough there's the reveal that the blood from the world slows aging and allows King Dang and the other Sheriffs to live longer lives. Queenie's more modest consumption of the blood seems to imply she aged more "normally" than the others]].
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: While the characters in the world of ''Back'' come in all shapes and sizes, Queenie's design is notable for the sheer level of detail on her hands compared to most other character's more simplistic hand designs.
* TheStarscream: She's the sole Sheriff with no loyalty to the King and Chapter 11 goes into depth about her ambitions and schemes to overthrow him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Eenie]]
!!Eenie

The main authority in charge of Queenie's Boys underneath Queenie herself. Eenie is an always smiling but dangerous enforcer of the group.
----
* TheDragon: Queenie's right-hand woman. When Queenie squares off against Abigail it's Eenie who fights alongside her, Queenie stating that she shares the empowering serum with her.
* FlashStep: She's very fast and dangerous.
* PerpetualSmiler: She always has a dissonant smile on her face only really losing it when [[spoiler:Queenie gets into a fight with Uncle Frick]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Meanie]]
!!Meanie

The muscle of Queenie's Boys.
----
* TheBrute: The biggest and seemingly strongest of the group.
* RefusalOfTheCall: [[spoiler:While Queenie and the others have their cry-fest, Meanie listens to Frick's story of how Abigail came to be. Afterward, when Daniel, Mattie, and Frick all volunteer to help Abigail, a nervous Meanie refuses. Frick tells him it's ok and that he can watch over Queenie and the others]].
* TheQuietOne: He doesn't speak as much as Eenie or Teenie, preferring to loom over others silently.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Teenie]]
!!Teenie

The youngest of Queenie's main enforcers.
----
* BladeEnthusiast: Teenie loves her knives. When she finally confronts Abigail she's completely decked out in them even holding one in her teeth.
* MeaningfulName: The smallest member of Queenie's Boys is named "Teenie". Makes sense.
[[/folder]]

!The Society of Clocks
[[folder:General]]

A secret society that attunes themselves to the "biological clock" that is the planet.
----
* ApocalypseCult: An oddly benevolent one. They personify the world as a great being that needs to be saved. They wanted to kill Abigail because they believed she would destroy the world but eventually they come to see her as GaiasVengeance and praise her potential to "reset" the world rather than destroy it. Daniel admits that he can't quite tell the difference as both scenarios are apocalyptic.
* BigGood: In-spite of their eccentricities they're the major force for good in the land opposing the king. Even their welcoming of the apocalypse is in part them recognizing that the long since poisoned land needs renewal.
* TheMole: They have agents in both King Dang's group and the Witches. [[spoiler:Frick]] is especially entrenched into the organization to the point they could be considered a MoleInCharge. Knook is a more downplayed example as she's not a part of Dang's group nor the rulership of Daggum but she is a private citizen close to the actual ruler and thus can easily access information.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mattie]]
!!Mattie

A witch who's since joined the Society of Clocks. She helps Princess Darn escape the castle and lets her lay low for a while.
----
* BeehiveHairdo: Her blonde hair is done up in a beehive that she keeps under her witches hat. A child thrown at her is embedded in it at one point. In the later arcs she crushes it down with Abigail's hat making it look like a thick braid.
* CloudCuckooLander: Mattie is always excited, upbeat, and strange. She defeats a number of elite knights using pie.
* ValleyGirl: Very eccentric, chatty, and tends to slip into LikeIsLikeAComma.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Knook]]
!!Knook

A scientist based in Daggum and the apparent Girlfriend of the town's leader Crannie. Knook has been researching the world and joined the Society of Clocks.
----
* FatAndSkinny: The skinny to Crannie's fat.
* HeelFaceTurn: Her dialogue implies she was under the King's employ before the story began. In Chapter 12 she reveals that she set up the operation in Accursed and put the Dead Man in charge.
* MrExposition: She tells Daniel and the Audience about King Dang's rule [[spoiler:he's likely a lot older than he claims to be and seems to predate written history]]. She explains how Dang rules the towns through his Sheriffs, how people came to accept his leadership, and [[spoiler:the eldritch nature of the world]].
* OnlySaneMan: Easily one of the most reasonable and down to Earth people that Daniel and Abigail run into. She even manages to rationalize the odd existentialism that the Society preaches.
* OpaqueNerdGlasses: She wears a pair of shiny thick lenses that obscure her eyes.
* PunnyName: Her and Crannie's names are a pun on the term "Nook and Cranny."
* TheMole: She's a former agent of King Dang and one of the people in charge of Daggum. Using her high position in the city she's able to pass on a lot of info to the Society of Clocks.
* {{Retcon}}: The Society sect that the heroes run into states that their informant is a man named Nook. When the audience meets her, she's a woman named Knook.
* SecretKeeper: Though it's only revealed after the fact, but Knook knew that [[spoiler:the Dead Man wasn't actually dead]] as she was the one who set the whole thing up. Not even Crannie [[spoiler:his fellow Sheriff]] was in on that.
