header:Rebel Alliance and New Republic Starfighter Corps
Considered to be one of the greatest assets and the backbone of the Rebellion, the Starfighter Corps flew a variety of vessels that outclassed the Empire's [=TIE=] fighters. While the Empire dismissed starfighter units as expendable and focused on capital ships, the Alliance built its squadrons to destroy those vessels. Under the New Republic, the Starfighter Corps continued to hold a key role as a peacekeeping tool, patrolling the galaxy to hunt down pirates and other threats to galactic stability.

The head of Starfighter Command, Merrick hailed from Virujansi and was a key member of the early Rebel Alliance's military leadership. A skilled pilot, he flew both U-Wings and X-Wings as the leader of Blue Squadron. Merrick led the starfighter attack during the mission to steal the Death Star plans, being killed in the Battle of Scarif.
----
* AcePilot: According to the kill marks on his helmet, he has at least sixty kills. In The Rebel Files, Poe Dameron notes that Antoc could outfly most pilots who ever lived.
* BigDamnHeroes: He and Blue Squadron show up to save Rogue One from the walkers on Scarif, taking them all down from the air.
* CharacterDeath: Gets shot down in the Battle of Scarif, notably dying in a similar manner to Red Leader Garven Dreis (he gets his engines blown out by a TIE and crashes while screaming).
* AFatherToHisMen: He is very protective of his people, particularly the U-Wing pilots, and refuses to risk their lives without good reason. Merrick is aware of this protective instinct, so he has his second-in-command, Colonel Cor, handle the details of resource allocation and deployment into dangerous assignments in a dispassionate manner that he cannot.
* FourStarBadass: Both general and skilled X-Wing pilot.
* FrontlineGeneral: While actual command of the rebels during the Battle of Scarif falls to Admiral Raddus, Merrick himself is a general who's personally involved in the fight as an X-Wing pilot.
* MythologyGag: In Legends, Merrick Simms was the name of Blue Leader.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: On his homeworld of Virujansi, Merrick was the leader of the Rarified Air Cavalry. After the Empire abolished the planet's ruling council, installed an Imperial governor, and integrated their military into the Empire, Merrick and his pilots were offered positions in the Imperial Navy. He refused, and alongside his comrade Garven Dreis fled Virujansi to find the Rebel Alliance and offer their services as starfighter pilots.
* WeAREStrugglingTogether: He and General Draven of Intelligence often come into conflict, with Merrick considering Draven far too ruthlessly pragmatic and willing to risk civilian casualties in his brutal special operations missions.

General Merrick's second-in-command, Cor handles the day-to-day details of running Alliance Starfighter Command. He succeeds Merrick's position as head of Starfighter Command following the Battle of Yavin.
----
* ConsummateProfessional: His job is to determine how to efficiently allocate resources and best determine where to deploy starfighter assets. He made an agreement with Merrick to do this job dispassionately, treating the pilots as resources on a ledger, not living people.
* NumberTwo: To Merrick. According to From a Certain Point of View, Cor's been having to pick up Merrick's work now that his superior is dead and is eventually promoted to permanently replace him.
* SenselessSacrifice: Attempts to pilot an unarmed shuttle through the Imperial assault on the Mako-Ta space docks in order to fly close enough to a sabotaged Rebel cruiser's launch bay doors and open them. Unfortunately, Cor barely manages to clear the launch bay before his shuttle is destroyed by [=TIE=] fighters and Han arrives in the Millennium Falcon a few minutes later to perform the same task.
* RankUp: The Marvel Star Wars comic reveals that he was promoted from Colonel to General sometime after the Battle of Yavin.

-->"The Empire must be destroyed. If that's going to happen, some of us have to get blood on our hands. We have to be willing to kill, and willing to die. It's not easy and it never will be."

A Rebel pilot from Corellia who fought in the Battles of Yavin, Hoth, and Endor, becoming one of the Rebellion's most celebrated heroes. Notably the only man to face off against both Death Stars and live to tell about it. Following the Battle of Endor, Wedge is briefly captured and tortured by the Empire before being rescued. Upon recovering from his injuries he founded Phantom Squadron and assisted in the Liberation of Kashyyyk and the Battle of Jakku.
\
After the war ended, Wedge served as an instructor at the New Republic flight academy on Hosnian Prime, training many pilots who would go on to join the Resistance like Poe Dameron. He eventually retired to Akiva and married Norra Wexley. In the aftermath of the Battle of Crait, Wedge and Norra joined the depleted ranks of the Resistance to fight against the First Order.
----
* AcePilot: Survives both Death Star runs while shooting down several Imperial starfighters, eventually becoming the Alliance's most decorated and famed pilot.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: Wedge rises through the ranks and is given command of his own squadron by repeatedly surviving some of the worst battles of the war, pulling off near impossible tasks, and showing a talent for leadership.
* BadassInDistress: He is captured by Imperial forces in Aftermath and tortured by them throughout the novel before being rescued at the end.
* BadassNormal: He has no connection to the Force, but is easily one of the best pilots seen in the films. He even saves Luke during the first Death Star battle, and easily navigated the maze of death that was the inside of the second Death Star. His piloting prowess has become so legendary that, in certain lexicons, the "Badass Normal" trope is named "Wedge-type Character" instead.
* BadLiar: In Aftermath, Wedge states that he is one, that he is just a pilot and not somebody who can convince a Jawa to buy a bag of sand like Han Solo. It contrasts from his depiction in Legends, where he was a big enough Troll that Han sometimes believed his every word and to the point that Leia had to learn to see through it.
* BigDamnHeroes: In Life Debt, he and Ackbar ignore the New Republic Senate's decision to hold off on any new offensives while negotiating with Grand Admiral Rae Sloane and lead Phantom Squadron and Home One to Kashyyyk in order to aid Leia in stopping the Imperial bombardment of the planet and save Han, Chewbacca, and a group of rebels who had been attempting to liberate the world. Their arrival turns the previously hopeless situation into a major victory for the New Republic.
* BroadStrokes:
** According to Aftermath, he's not fond of the Empire because they hurt his family and a girl he loved, which is similar to his backstory in Legends.
** Similar to Wraith Squadron in Legends, Phantom Squadron is a group of washouts, screwups, and last-chancers given the opportunity to redeem themselves by Wedge.
** In both canon and Legends his primary love interest is a widowed Rebel whose husband is eventually revealed to be alive but brainwashed into a sleeper agent by the Empire.
* TheBusCameBack:
** After his only appearance in the first half of Season 3 of Rebels in his debut episode, he later returns in the second half, having been doing jobs for Phoenix Squadron offscreen.
** He shows up in the FinalBattle in The Rise of Skywalker as a gunner rather than a pilot, likely due to the character being 56 years old.
* ButtMonkey: Ezra and Zeb seem to like picking on him and Hobbie, and on one mission, he ends up being partnered with AP-5 and Chopper. Only after the start of the mission does he realize that the only reason why he got partnered with the two droids is because nobody else wanted to.
* CallSign: He has several throughout the series:
** As a Imperial cadet, he was TIE [=SS25=].
** During the Battle of Yavin, he was Red Two. Following that battle and the rebuilding of Red Squadron, Wedge became Red Three.
** During the Battle of Hoth, he was Rogue Three.
** During the Battle of Endor, he was Red Leader/One.
** After founding Phantom Squadron he is Phantom Leader.
* CallToAgriculture: After retiring from the military he and Norra bought a small farm outside of Akiva's capital city.
* TheCameo: He can be heard in Rogue One during the Battle of Scarif, though he is not seen. He wasn't actually present during the battle, since A New Hope is the first time he sees the Death Star ("Look at the size of that thing!"). You can also see his X-Wing in some of the camera shots of the base on Yavin 4.
* CareerEndingInjury:
** Nearly got one post-defection, in a mission he was encouraged to do by Fulcrum II. It ended with him crashing into the peak of a volcano and getting a leg broken in three places. NiceJobBreakingItHero for Fulcrum Pun indeed.
** The same leg gets broken again when he is captured at Akiva. He is stuck on light duty for several months afterward while he recovers, which frustrates him to no end.
* CasualDangerDialogue: Speaks with the most glacially calm voice of all the Rebel pilots during the Battle of Endor, even when making an impossible run into the guts of the second Death Star, with all of the hopes of the Rebellion riding on his success.
* CharacterDevelopment: In A New Hope, he tends to voice his concerns about a wide variety of things (the size of the Death Star, whether the targeting computer can hit the target, and the gun towers in the trench), in Empire Strikes Back, he's much more confident but still excitable ("Good shot, Jansen!" and "Whaa! That got him!"). By Return of the Jedi, he maintains an unshakable DangerDeadpan during a massive space battle, even while flying through the Death Star II to lay in an attack run.
* ChekhovsGunman: Wedge was a constant background character in the Original Trilogy, but he didn't affect the plot. Yet, in Return of the Jedi, he ends up destroying the shield protecting the Second Death Star's core and allowing the Rebellion to defeat the Empire.
* CoolBigBro: Shades of it. In one of the issues of the Rebels magazine comics, he tags along with Mart to keep an eye on him when the latter wants to see the original Iron Squadron despite the risk of the both of them getting in trouble for leaving Chopper Base against orders.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Prior to joining the Skystrike Academy, he used to work in a fuel depot and local farms. When he enrolled, a series of events that included the Empire hurting his family, friends, and a girl he loved made him sympathetic to the Rebellion, which attracted the attention of Fulcrum II, who in turn got him and Hobbie help from Sabine to defect.
* DecompositeCharacter: Wedge was originally played by Colin Higgins but was fired for not memorising lines. One scene featuring Higgins was left in the movie and the Literature/FromACertainPointOfView short story, "Duty Roster" made this version a separate character called Col Takbright.
* DefectorFromDecadence: He used to be a pilot from the Skystrike Academy, a TIE Flight Academy, and with the help of Fulcrum II (unknowingly initially) and Sabine, he and Hobbie defect to Phoenix Squadron.
* DressingAsTheEnemy: In the second half of Rebels Season 3, he once again dons the Imperial pilot suit.
* ExactWords: Wedge is not only the sole person to survive both Death Stars, he's the only person to fight both Death Stars. Luke, Han, Chewie and Evaan (the Y-Wing pilot), the only others who could even have qualified, weren't flying because they had more important things to do (and/or haven't managed to exist in canon yet, in this case of Evaan). That said, considering the attrition rate of those battles, surviving both is still an achievement, and this fact is used as the foundation of his Ace Piloting credentials.
* FamedInStory: By the time of the Battle of Endor, Wedge is one of the Rebellion's most well-known heroes thanks to his exploits at Yavin and Hoth. His fame only grows further when he destroys the second Death Star alongside Lando.
* HappilyMarried: To Norra Wexley sometime after the events of the Aftermath trilogy.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: When he is not working with the Rebel heroes, Wedge is off on his own adventures leading Red or Rogue Squadron. Some of those adventures get shown in other series.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Temmin Wexley, who he began training as a pilot after the Battle of Akivia. Temmin later becomes his stepson.
* TheLeader: Of Red / Rogue Squadron following the Battle of Hoth, and then Phantom Squadron following the Battle of Akivia.
* LimitedWardrobe: In all of his appearances in the movies, Wedge only wears his Rebel pilot suit.
* LivingLegend: Even prior to the Battle of Endor, Wedge is regarded by the other Alliance pilots as this due to surviving the first Death Star. By the time of the First Order-Resistance war, Wedge is on a list of living Alliance members whom the First Order are seeking to eliminate due to being potential Resistance recruits who could rally more fighters against them. Wedge does exactly that after surviving their kidnapping attempting, using his influence to rally numerous pilots who had previously served under his command, along with several of their children who grew up on stories of his exploits.
* TheLostLenore: Part of his hatred for the Empire comes from them having harmed and presumably killed a girl he loved named Mala.In Legends, she and her father worked with the Rebellion and were killed in an orbital bombardment His helmet in Rebels bears her name in remembrance.
* MauveShirt: His role in the original trilogy films is little more than "recurring rebel pilot", but by giving him a name and having him appear prominently in all three films, he's elevated from an extra to a supporting character.
* TheMentor: Two of his students at the New Republic's flight academy were his stepson Temmin and Poe Dameron, whom he considered his star pupils and both of whom went on to become the Resistance's top fighter aces.
* MythologyGag: Him being a DefectorFromDecadence as his backstory may be a reference to how in Legends, he would infiltrate Imperial Flight Academies, gather and/or persuade cadets to rebel, then have them grab the first ship out of there once they graduate. That way, the Rebel Alliance won't have to use up resources to train new pilots. Instead, they have sympathizers get trained by the Empire.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: The Antilles Intercept, a flight maneuver taught to New Republic/Resistance pilots, is named after him.
* NervesOfSteel: You try flying through the superstructure of a moon-sized space station and sound calm about it the entire way.
* NiceGuy: He is a friendly guy who wholeheartedly believes in the Rebellion's ideals.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** After being subject to AP-5 and Chopper's antics, the final straw is when Chopper accidentally hits him in the knee, causing the pilot to angrily chase after the astromech with intent to beat him up.
** He also has no issue getting back at Wes for the pranks he pulls, notably locking his friend in a spinning flight simulator filled with Tauntaun musk after Wes had previously planted a stink bomb of the same musk within his cockpit during a patrol.
* OddFriendship: According to Aftermath, Fulcrum II ended up becoming his friend, though as Wedge looks back on it a couple years after his defection from the Skystrike Academy, it seems that he never found out who Fulcrum II really was by then.
* OldSoldier: When he comes out of retirement to fight the First Order he is at least in his late 50s with several old injuries still bothering him, but he quickly proves that his piloting and shooting skills are as sharp as ever.
* OohMeAccentsSlipping: In the first movie, Lucas dubbed another actor's voice over his lines. In Empire, Lawson affected an American accent before switching to his native Scottish in Jedi.
* OneSteveLimit: No relation to Captain Raymus Antilles, or Bail Antilles (who is only mentioned once in Film/ThePhantomMenace).
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Stepson in this case. He fights in the Battle of Exogol as a gunner aboard the Millennium Falcon and survives the battle, but he only arrived just moments after his stepson, Temmin, was killed.
* RankUp: He starts as a defected lieutenant in Rebels, becomes wing commander of Red Squadron and commander in the Alliance military in general, later becoming a captain in the New Republic.
* ReassignedToAntarctica: Due to disobeying orders and taking Phantom Squadron to Kashyyyk, Wedge is publicly given a medal but removed from active flight duty and assigned to oversee hanger operations at a base on Chandrila, with the view that despite his service Wedge's willingness to defy authority no longer fit with the switch from the Rebellion to New Republic.
* RetiredBadass: By the time of the First Order-Resistance conflict, Wedge and Norra have been farmers on Akiva for years and want nothing more than to stay that way. But the destruction of Hosnian Prime and the death of so many senior Resistance leaders, including Luke and Ackbar, drive them to come out of retirement and join the Resistance.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Although the New Republic decided to forgo any new offensives while attempting to negotiate the Empire's surrender with Sloane, Wedge and Ackbar decide to follow Leia in going to Kashyyyk to stop an Imperial fleet from destroying it and killing Han and Chewie.
* ShipTease: With Norra Wexley. The two begin a brief relationship in Life Debt, but when Norra returns from Kashyyyk with her husband Bentin, who had been imprisoned there, the relationship ends. [[spoiler:Bentin's subsequent brainwashing and death allow Wedge and Norra to resume their relationship. This might double as a MythologyGag, as Wedge faced similar circumstances with his Legends LoveInterest.]]
* StraightMan: Often has to take this role as a squadron commander, with a number of his subordinates being more highly eccentric than him. Wes is the one he steps into the role most often with.
* StressVomit: After killing the pirates who killed people close to him in his youth, Wedge spent the night puking in horror at the first lives he ever took.
* TakingTheBullet: His role in the trench run is to fly behind Luke's X-Wing and soak up the fire from the pursuing [=TIEs=] long enough for Luke to fire his torpedoes. However, when his maneuvering capabilities are reduced after taking damage, Luke orders Wedge to pull out of the trench since he can no longer protect him.
* TrueCompanions: Although it is not shown much in the films, the other works establish that he is part of the core group of heroes and his personal loyalty to Luke, Leia, and Han eclipses his loyalty to the New Republic.
* UncertainDoom: At the end of Empire's End, he retires from his piloting career to become the chief instructor of the flight academy on Hosnian Prime. Thankfully, Resistance Reborn reveals he had retired and moved to Akiva before the planet's destruction.
* VeteranInstructor: Post-Jakku, Wedge was assigned as the head instructor of a New Republic flight academy on Hosnian Prime, as the New Republic felt that he had gone rogue a few too many times and that his active service was no longer needed with the war coming to a close.
* WarHero: He is a highly decorated pilot who is well-known throughout the galaxy for his service during the Rebellion. When the First Order begins its takeover of the galaxy, his status as a Rebel hero puts him near the top of their list for capture and execution.
* Wingman: Acts as Luke's alongside Biggs during the run on first Death Star. He has to pull out of the trench run due to his fighter taking too much damage.
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe: He's relieved to hear that the Rebellion sent Sabine to help him, Rake, and Hobbie escape from Skystrike, though this is his reaction when she reveals that she's just making this up as she goes along.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Although his appearance may indicate that he is in his late 20s or early 30s, he is actually the same age as Sabine Wren, who was 21 years old at the events of the battle of Yavin.

* ADayInTheLimelight: She receives her own short story, "Grounded", in From a Certain Point of View.
* AMotherToHerMen: She deeply cares about her pilots and carries immense guilt whenever they don't make it out of battle alive, feeling that as they are her responsibility, she wonders if there was anymore she could have done to prevent them from being another casualty. 192
The human commander of Blade Squadron. He lost his wife during the evacuation of Hoth when her transport was destroyed by the Devastator, which he is eager to avenge during the Battle of Endor.
----
* AcePilot: Moonsong notes that he doesn't look much like a warrior, being overweight and redfaced, but that he makes up for it with his fast reflexes and skill in a fighter. He defeats Imperial AcePilot Commander Gradd, who is one of the best Imperial pilots in the fleet, in a one-on-one fighter duel, but his fighter is left heavily damaged afterwards.
* BloodFromTheMouth: Tastes blood in his mouth after his dogfight with Commander Gradd has left his B-wing (and him) in rough shape.
* CommandingCoolness: He is regarded as a first-rate commander by his pilots.
* CrusadingWidower: He is extremely pleased when he realizes that the ship his squadron is assigned to destroy is the Devastator, the same ship responsible for destroying the transport his wife was on at the Battle of Hoth.
* DisappointedInYou: He sees a lot of potential in Moonsong, but is disappointed in her inability to follow proper squadron protocol in training exercises. That disappointment hurts her a lot more than any chewing out he or Stramm could give her.
* EmptyShell: He considers himself one after the loss of his wife at Hoth, noting he hasn't felt much of any emotion since then.
* IWillOnlySlowYouDown: After the Devastator is destroyed, he orders the remaining fighters in Blade Squadron to leave him behind and rejoin the rest of the Rebel fighters. The story ends with him still alive, but with little hope for rescue before his injuries kill him or his fighter falls apart.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Knows exactly how to handle the pilots under his command, cutting Moonsong slack about MildlyMilitary status because she is a good pilot and does not discipline her for mouthing off to Stramm after an exercise because she was correct when she told him that Fox's numbers were off for their attack run. However, he does chew her out for lack of communication with the rest of the squadron, which Moonsong acknowledges as a problem.
* SecretSecretKeeper: He knows about Stramm and Moonsong's relationship, but doesn't do anything about it despite it being against regulations.

A former Imperial officer who defected a year prior to the Battle of Endor. He is second-in-command of Blade Squadron. After the Battle of Endor, Stramm became the leader of Blade Squadron and was tasked with rebuilding it.
----
* AcePilot: During the Battle of Endor, he is the only B-wing pilot in Blade Squadron who engages the TIE interceptors in a dogfight and doesn't get killed. He shoots down several of the [=TIEs=], saving Moonsong and allowing them to complete their bombing run on the Devastator.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Moonsong, although they are together by the time the story starts and are simply keeping up the act in public.
* DefectorFromDecadence: He deserted from his post on Naboo and joined the Rebellion after having enough of the oppressive orders handed down by his Imperial superiors.
* FishOutOfWater: As a Imperial pilot, he was used to a more disciplined and orderly command structure. The MildlyMilitary nature of the Alliance frustrates him and results in Stramm sometimes being too hard on his pilots to compensate for this.
* KnightInSourArmor: He does not really think the Alliance has a chance to defeat the Empire, but wants to fight it anyway to strike back at the evil he had served for far too long.
* NumberTwo: He is second-in-command of Blade Squadron and takes over command after Fox's A-wing is badly damaged and they think he is dead.
* RankUp: He was promoted to commander and made the leader of Blade Squadron following the Battle of Endor.
* SecretRelationship: With Moonsong, although Fox is secretly aware of it. He ends their relationship after being promoted to squadron leader, believing that it would be too inappropriate to continue.
* UptightLovesWild: He is known for being a by-the-book officer who still abides by the discipline he got in the Imperial military, but gets into a relationship with Moonsong, who most definitely does not like playing by the rulebook.

A human ex-smuggler who operated out of Coruscant, Moonsong recently joined the Rebel Alliance. She was in a relationship with Stramm until after the Battle of Endor. During the Battle of Kuat, Moonsong is promoted to squadron leader when Stramm is assigned to coordinate starfighter tactics.
----
* ActionGirl: In addition to being a skilled pilot Moonsong is capable in ground combat. During the Battle of Jakku she is shot down and works with a group of New Republic soldiers to ambush an Imperial supply convoy.
* AcePilot: Fox notes that she is one of the best pilots he has ever seen, and may even be nearly as skilled as Wedge Antilles. However, she has trouble working with the rest of the squadron as a team, although this issue evaporates when they go into combat at Endor.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Stramm, although they are together by the time the story starts and are simply keeping up the act in public.
* FieryRedhead: She has short red hair, and is very passionate and outspoken.
* MildlyMilitary: Being an ex-smuggler, Moonsong is used to playing a little loose with the rules, even for a Rebel. Fox tells her that if they weren't already short on pilots, he would yank her flight permission due to her attitude in the training exercises and tendency to act on her own plans without telling the rest of the squadron what she is doing.
* NewMeat: She may be a natural pilot and have plenty of experience as a smuggler, but before the Battle of Endor she still has less than fifty hours of flight time in a B-wing. The harrowing experience of Endor rid her of this status immediately, and Moonsong was put in charge of training the squadron's new recruits.
* NumberTwo: She is made the second-in-command of Blade Squadron after Endor.

An aristocrat from Jelucan, Thane was best friends with Ciena Ree and went to the Imperial Academy on Coruscant with her, graduating as a top-ranked [=TIE=] pilot. However, he deserted the Empire soon after the destruction of Alderaan and joined the Alliance several months later. However, fate continued to bring him and Ciena, still serving in the Imperial fleet, together on several occasions during the war.
----
* AbusiveParents: While his mother was only neglectful of him, Thane's father would often beat him harshly and bad enough to leave scars that were still visible in his adulthood.
* AcePilot: He is one of the most skilled pilots to ever graduate from the Imperial Academy on Coruscant. After joining the Alliance, Thane is assigned to Corona Squadron, which is one of their elite Starfighter units.
* BullyHunter: He hates bullies, mainly because his father and older brother were both bullies. In fact, he and Ciena become friends because Thane charges a bunch of kids bullying Ciena when she tries to sneak a look at Tarkin's shuttle. This mentality later contributes to his decision to join the Rebellion despite being cynical about it, as he can no longer stand simply going around the galaxy and seeing the harm Imperials are inflicting everywhere.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Ciena and Thane. They meet when they're little ship-nerd 8-year-olds. They fall in love about a decade later.
* ComicBookFantasyCasting: The author sees him as being played by Creator/SamReid.
* TheCynic: He was never a true believer in the Empire, and simply joined up to fly their advanced ships. Even after joining up with the Rebellion, he did not initially think that whatever replaced the Empire would be good, but that it at least had to be better than the Empire. After serving with the Rebellion for awhile and coming to admire its leaders, he does eventually start to believe that the Rebellion has a good chance to establish a just government.
* DeathFakedForYou: Although Ciena told him she would report that he had deserted, she actually claimed that he had committed suicide out of grief over the destruction of the Death Star.
* FlatEarthAtheist: A downplayed example. Thane works for the Rebellion with Luke Skywalker living just down the hall, but continues to believe the Force is ridiculous nonsense. Doubly so with so many people in living memory who knew the Jedi. Also, despite the staggering amount of really weird happenstances that keep bringing him and Ciena back together. However, he's never shown as seeing any hard evidence (Luke doesn't appear on page in the book nor apparently use his powers where Thane can see, and witnesses don't interact with him), thus his view seems more reasonable at first, since he just hears people state their belief in the Force. In the end, he comes around to believing it's real from the aforementioned happenstances just becoming too much for ever explaining as being coincidences.
* FriendlyEnemy: What he and Ciena. General Rieekan and his squadron are not particularly pleased by this, although his squadmates come around when they witness Ciena save Thane's life during a scouting mission.
* HeelFaceTurn: Deserts the Empire and eventually joins the Rebels.
* HeelRealization: The destruction of Alderaan kicks off his realization that the Empire is evil, and watching his fellow Imperials enslave the Bodachi'i drives him to finally desert from the Empire.
* HollywoodAtheist: Zigzagged with Thane. He's initially a cynical atheist who disbelieves in the Force, an afterlife or any spiritual things generally, certain people are fundamentally self-interested (to him, the Rebels are just less bad than the Empire, rather than virtuous). However, he is still a nice guy and slowly learns he's wrong on all these things, which Thane easily accepts.
* InterclassFriendship: With Ciena; his family is a powerful aristocratic family while Ciena's is from a poor working-class.
* KnightInSourArmor: While he does not believe the Alliance can defeat the Empire, Thane feels he must fight it after having served the Empire and seeing its evil firsthand.
* OddFriendship: Besides their social statuses, Thane and Ciena also come from opposing cultures that settled Jelucan at different points. The fact that it grows into a romance that continues even after Thane joins the Rebellion only increases how odd it is.
* OhCrap: When he realizes that his boss, Mon Mothma, was the woman that he vented to when he got drunk after having a previous OhCrap that he might unknowingly kill Ciena during some battle between the Rebellion and the Empire. Fortunately, Senator Mothma is a NiceGirl, ReasonableAuthorityFigure, and a BenevolentBoss who understands that he's in distress, and as long as he doesn't let his love for Ciena get in the way of his commitment to the Rebellion, it'll be fine.
* RankUp: By the time of the Battle of Jakku, Thane was promoted from Lieutenant to Commander.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: He comes from a wealthy aristocratic family, but initially joins the military before deserting and eventually joining the Rebellion that is attempting to take down the system that helps his class back on Jelucan.
* StarcrossedLovers: With Ciena, ever since he deserted the Empire and joined the Rebels while his ChildhoodFriend stayed with the Imperial forces. They thankfully survive the war.
* TokenHuman: While part of the crew of the Mighty Oak Apocalypse.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He and Yendor don't get along too well, but they always look out for each other, especially when it comes to Ciena.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Although his friendship with Ciena survives his defection, his friendship with Nash does not. Thane is disgusted that Nash continues to serve the people who destroyed his homeworld, while Nash views Thane as a manipulative traitor and assumes that he must never have been truly friends with them.

A dark-skinned female human from Iloh, Kendy was a roommate and friend of Ciena Ree and Jude at the Imperial Academy on Coruscant. After graduating, she and her unit eventually mutinied against the Empire and joined the Rebellion, where she was reunited with her friend and fellow classmate Thane.
----
* AcePilot: While nowhere as good as Ciena or Thane, Kendy was near the top of the class at the Imperial Academy and is assigned to an elite X-Wing unit as part of the Rebellion.
* ActionGirl: In addition to being a capable pilot, Kendy is more than capable of taking care of herself in a firefight. At the academy, she had the best scores in accuracy with a blaster, and she puts those skills to good use when infiltrating the Inflictor.
* ComicBookFantasyCasting: The author imagines Kendy being played by Parminder Nagra.
* HeelFaceTurn: She and her unit mutinied against the Empire on Miriatin. She was among the survivors who joined the Rebel Alliance.
* PrefersGoingBarefoot: Being from a tropical world with lots of beaches, she grew up going barefoot most of the time and grew to hate having to wear shoes, particularly the Imperial military boots.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: She no longer considers Ciena to be a friend after joining the Rebellion, believing that someone who continued serving the Empire as long as Ciena had would be too corrupted to still be a good person. She changes her mind after witnessing Ciena save Thane's life during a scouting mission to the Hudalla System.
* WorldOfTechnicolorHair: She has green hair, which is noted to be a common trait amongst humans from Iloh.

* TheStraightMan: To Lando's laidback attitude. Their mission on Sullust's Imperial factory spirals into chaos thanks to Lando's IndyPloy tendencies, and poor Shriv is forced to tag along anyway.

* RetiredBadass: After completing the mission to Vetine with Luke, Shara retires to a new colony on Yavin 4 with Kes and Poe.
* RuggedScar: She has a small vertical scar above her right eye that goes through the outer edge of her eyebrow.
* TrappedBehindEnemyLines: Becomes stranded aboard the Star Destroyer Tarkin's Will during an operation to steal information from it. Shara spent the next few months hiding and living aboard the ship while finding ways to try and sabotage it, and was eventually rescued by Kes and a unit of Pathfinder volunteers.
* Workaholic: She throws herself completely into her work after the Battle of Endor, volunteering for mission after mission while her father watches over her child and her husband is forced to keep radio silent while in the field, much to the concern of L'ulo.

-->"Negative. Whoever you are, the Iron Squadron doesn't run."

The son of a member of the original Iron Squadron, who died on Mykapo. His uncle, Jun Sato, lost contact with the rebellious teen, as he would go on to start a rebel cell of his own. After joining Iron Squadron to the Lothal Sector resistance cell, Mattin eventually became a X-Wing pilot in the Rebel Alliance, serving in Phoenix and Starlight Squadrons.
----
* SeventiesHair: His haircut is impressively retro, and yet another stylistic nod to the decade in which Star Wars debuted. The creators cited Jim Morrison's hairdo as a template.
* AcePilot: Well, he certainly sees himself this way. He does eventually develop into one for real, and is selected as part of the elite Starlight Squadron which was tasked with reuniting the scattered Rebel fleet after the Battle of Hoth.
* TheBusCameBack: After his only appearance in Season 3, he returns in Season 4 as a pilot in Hera's Phoenix Squadron.
* CrypticBackgroundReference: His X-Wing helmet has "Sammie" written on it. Unless the helmet is from someone else, he seems to have something do with someone named Sammie or it's just an EasterEgg.
* DisappearedDad: His father died in combat.
* DumbassHasAPoint[=/=]JerkassHasAPoint: After defeating the first wave of Imperial ships, the Ghost crew tries to convince him and Iron Squadron to leave. One of the arguments Hera tries to pull is that they can't handle themselves in combat. Mart counters that they were fine and didn't need back-up, which is actually true; the rebels only shot down a couple of [=TIEs=] while the Iron Squadron wrecked everything else in that wave. But it is quickly rendered moot and descends into NotHelpingYourCase when Mart says the main ship the Iron Squadron destroyed was a Star Destroyer, further showing that he and the others don't know what they're really up against.
* DumbassNoMore: Fortunately, he starts to the fight more seriously, especially after the Battle of Atollon.
* Expy: Of Ezra pre-TimeSkip. His jumpsuit and hairstyle even evoke Ezra's previous appearance. It's not too surprising that it seems that he and Jai are on some level of friendship in Season 4.
* IChooseToStay: When Sabine and Ezra tell the group they have to leave immediately, he doesn't board the Phantom II and disengages the airlock, wanting to fight the Empire despite the odds being stacked against him. He fails, though the rebels return to save him.
* ItOnlyWorksOnce: His technique of dropping explosive cargo onto minor Imperial ships doesn't work against an Imperial light cruiser headed by an actual admiral who orders the shields up before the cargo is even within a mile of hitting it.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: He claims to be an expert, but he's hopelessly unaware of how things actually work. Notably, he seems to think that any ship larger than his own is a Star Destroyer.
* LeeroyJenkins: After Ezra talks some sense into Gooti and Jonner, they try to persuade Mart that they need to leave when Imperial reinforcements arrive. Mart stays behind last second to continue to fight, believing that running away is cowardly. He loses and needs to be bailed out by the rebels later.
* MissingMom: No comment is made on his mother besides the fact that he got his surname from her. She seems to be still around.
* NomDeMom: For whatever reason, Mart took up his mother's surname, Mattin, rather than his father's surname, Sato. Considering one of the reasons why this trope is used is to hide their identity from enemies, this may be the case for Mart.
* OddFriendship: He gets along oddly well with Commander Wolffe and Vizago during the Rebels finale.
* RebelliousSpirit: He's been this way for a while, according to Sato.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He calls himself "the best pilot in the galaxy" and boasts about taking on Star Destroyers. He's certainly not a bad pilot, but he's nowhere near that good, and he's really only managed to survive as long as he has by way of being too minor for the Empire to really care about. The moment he faces actual meaningful Imperial resistance, he crumbles quickly.
* TragicKeepsake: His YT-2400 was from his father, who got it from Sato.
* Tuckerization: Switch an "R" in Mart and a "T" in Mattin, and you got Matt Martin, a member of the Lucasfilm Story Group and manager of digital content and community relations.

* PunnyName: "Secondary", referring to how you'll probably remember him for being the TokenNonHuman pilot despite being a minor character.

A pilot in Rogue Squadron who joined the Rebellion after defecting while training to become a [=TIE=] pilot at Skystrike Academy. He flew alongside Luke at the Battle of Hoth.
----
* AllThereInTheManual:
** His name and background were first re-established in the canon reference book Ultimate Star Wars.
** He was on standby to fly as Red Six if Jek Porkins was injured or unavailable during the events of Rogue One, according to the Visual Guide.
* BusCrash: He died during the Battle of Hoth according to On the Front Lines.
* DeathByAdaptation: While Legends works adapted his deleted scene of ramming General Veers' AT-AT, they depicted him ejecting at the last second before the crash and going on to become a mainstay of Rogue Squadron after the Battle of Hoth. In Canon, he did not eject and died in the ramming.
* DefectorFromDecadence: He was trained alongside Wedge at the Skystrike Academy and defected with him, with help from an infiltrating Sabine. He would later do the same two years later, recruiting Biggs after the both of them were commissioned onto the Star Destroyer, Rand Ecliptic, after getting into another Academy again.
* DistressedDude: He and Wedge were both captured when they attempted to desert, but were rescued by Sabine and successfully escape.
* DoNotCallMePaul: Hates the name Derek and insists on being called by his childhood nickname of Hobbie.
* InSeriesNickname: He is more commonly known as "Hobbie" than his actual name.
* MilitaryMoonshiner: It is mentioned in "The Buy-In" that Hobbie was brewing a rather vile tuber liquor in a hollowed-out astromech unit. Wedge and Wes kept his operation going after his death and named the drink the Klivian in his honor.
* RammingAlwaysWorks: Took out the lead AT-AT during the Battle of Hoth by crashing his snowspeeder into it, sacrificing his life to buy time for ground forces.
* Retcon: Initially, the Databank claimed that Hobbie survived the Battle of Hoth by ejecting before ramming his snowspeeder just like in Legends. On the Front Lines, however, confirmed him to have died as per reference to the original DeletedScene, with approval from the Lucasfilm Story Group.
* Wingman: During the Battle of Hoth, he flew as Luke's wingman.

* ADayInTheLimelight: The short story "Against All Odds" from the second volume of From A Certain Point of View" focuses on Dak.
* DueToTheDead: Luke tries to get Dak's body out of their snowspeeder when it crashes, but is forced to leave him behind when an AT-AT crushes the fighter.
* ExplosiveInstrumentation: His console explodes when a power malfunction causes it to overload, which killed him instantly.

* NewMeat: Of the "overenthusiastic but ultimately doomed new recruit" variety. Putting him alongside Luke is an effective way of showing how much Luke himself has grown in between films.
* PenalColony: His family were political prisoners in an Imperial penal colony and Dak himself was born there.
* RedShirt: In the film, he gets a few lines establishing his youthful enthusiasm compared to the now more experienced Luke before dying during the battle. However, Dak's background is expanded on in source books and novels to avert the trope.

During the Battle of Hoth, he served as Wedge's gunner during the battle. Following the evacuation, he assisted Wedge in reforming Red Squadron to protect the recovering Rebel Fleet before later participating in the attack on the second Death Star.
----
* AcePilot: He is counted amongst the best pilots in the Rebellion, and survives both the Battle of Hoth and Endor when most of his squadron doesn't make it out of either.
* AdaptationalSexuality: In Legends there was never any indication that he was interested in anything but women, while in a couple of stories from FACPOV: Return of the Jedi he flirts with Lando prior to the Battle of Endor.
* AllThereInTheManual: His first name was first established in the canon reference book Star Wars in 100 Scenes.
* AscendedExtra: He is a minor character in the film, but is developed a lot more thoroughly in other media.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He is constantly irreverent and seemingly takes nothing seriously, but is one of the deadliest pilots in the Rebellion.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: While seemingly spending most of his time thinking up pranks, Wes' antics tend to be good for the other pilot's morale, he is an excellent executive officer, and is an amazing pilot.
* CanonImmigrant: Him being sick while the whole Death Star situation was going on, causing Porkins to stand in for him, happened in Legends as well.
* FunPersonified: It takes a lot to dampen his spirits, with even Hobbie's death being unable to prevent him from snarking and messing with a brightly colored protocol droid about how bad it would be at espionage.

* LifeOrLimbDecision: After being shot down by Separatist forces in the Clone Wars, she cut her own arm off after it got caught in the wreckage of her downed skyhopper while the battle droids who shot her down were closing in.
* OldSoldier: She's been fighting for nigh on three decades, first as a resistance fighter against the Separatist Alliance in the Clone Wars, then as a rebel pilot against the Empire. Her squadmates often bemoan her tendency to share long-winded war stories with the "young 'uns."
* UtilityPartyMember: Primarily flies a U-Wing whose main focus is assisting and supplying the other members of the squadron.

A distant scion of the Empire-aligned Sienar Fleet Systems MegaCorp, Grace refused to compromise her morals for the sake of her family's business and enlisted with the Rebellion, taking great pleasure in blowing up the warships her family so happily provided to the Empire.
----
* DaddyIssues: She offhandedly calls her father a bigot. Grace despises him for his role in supplying the Imperial war machine.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Grace could have lived a life of extreme comfort and wealth as a part of the Sienar family, but instead chose to become a Rebel and risk her life to end her family's role in dominating the galaxy.
* JackOfAllStats: Primarily flies an X-Wing, the most generally balanced of the Republic starfighters between offense, defense, and speed.
* MeaningfulName: In the eyes of the Empire, you could say that she "fell from grace" by betraying her family and defecting to the Rebellion.
* MsFixit: Unsurprisingly considering her family background, she has a great deal of technical and engineering knowledge. Grace is able to identify what is wrong with a ship's hyperdrive after seeing it fail and explain to the crew aboard what they need to do to fix it and explain to Gunny what their updates mean.
* NumberTwo: To Gunny, having worked to earn that trust due to coming from an Imperial family.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Teases Frisk a lot and gets just as much back, but they are close friends. Grace is the only reason Frisk is still with the Rebellion after shaking his death mark, having learned she would miss him and deciding not to leave while the fighting continued.
* WhiteSheep: She's estranged from her family, the owners of a corporation that happily manufactures warships for the Empire. As such, she takes plenty of delight in wrecking [=TIEs=] in battle.

A former semi-pro racer, now the A-Wing pilot of Vanguard Squadron.
----
* AcePilot: They were one prior to joining the Rebellion, winning five races including the Socorro Sunset Grand Prix. They keep up their desire to race even as a Rebel pilot, with Frisk noting he learned his lesson about racing Keo after losing to them twelve times in a row.
* TheEmpath: Their connection to the Force allows them to feel others' emotions. They note that when Commander Lindon Javes discusses his former protégé Terisa Kerrill they could feel the pain and hurt that the severing of that relationship caused him.
* FollowingInTheirRescuersFootsteps: Their racing career came to an end when they were targeted by gangs in the Outer Rim who were upset that Keo kept winning. Keo was rescued from them by a stranger who showed them the struggle between the Rebellion and the Empire. This inspired Keo to join the Rebellion to help others like the person who rescued them.
* FragileSpeedster: Primarily flies an A-Wing, the speediest and most maneuverable of the Republic starfighters but also the most fragile.
* IJustKnew: They gets "hunches" about situations that always turn out to be spot on. Keo explains that while they are not able to reach out and manipulate the Force, they are sensitive to its energies and can "feel" things.

A former smuggler and thief, Frisk joined the Rebellion after an Imperial client put a death mark on him. He now serves with distinction, if not enthusiasm, in Vanguard Squadron.
----
* ConMan: His previous career involved hustling a lot of people, which burned him a lot of bridges. At one point he asks the player to "teach" him how to play sabaac for credits, which is obviously a ploy to hustle them. The Light You Bring mentions that he's banned from playing sabaac in the wardroom because of this.
* ConscienceMakesYouGoBack: A downplayed example in the backstory. He planned on leaving Vanguard after he'd shaken the death mark, but hearing Grace tell him she'd miss him made him decide to stay.
* TheCynic: He is a bit more cynical than the rest of the squadron, and his first reaction to hearing about Project Starhawk is a desire to know what it is since he prefers to know who and what he is working towards.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In Shadow Fall, Tssat is heard helping at the attack against Shadow Wing on Troithe.
* MightyGlacier: Primarily flies a Y-Wing. It's slow but packs the most firepower of any ship in the squadron.
* NoodleIncident: While he doesn't elaborate too much about it, the incident that earned him a death mark involved him selling a forged painting to an Imperial official... who, unknown to Frisk, wanted to use it to impress Admiral Thrawn, who immediately identified it as a fake.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Goes by Frisk, and mentions in an early conversation that only Grace uses his real name and only when mad at him.
* StereotypeFlip: Most Trandoshans are hunters who enjoy fighting up-close and bloody. Frisk is a schemer who hates hunting and prefers flying instead. Even his ship shows his differences with many of his fellow Trandoshans, as a Y-Wing is a support ship designed to bring down capital ships instead of hunt starfighters.
* TokenHeroicOrc: Frisk is one of the few Trandoshans in the franchise to be portrayed heroically, most of them being vicious mercs, hunters, or pirates. His profile on the Databank describes him as being too good-hearted to be your typical Trandoshan, but he's still conniving enough to be a ConMan.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He and Grace go back and forth at each other a lot, but they are close friends, and Frisk only stayed with the Rebellion because he knew she would miss him.

----
* IOweYouMyLife: Javes owes them his life for helping save him in the prologue, leading to him bringing them on to Vanguard Squadron.

* BreakoutCharacter: Slowly but surely gets more appearances as time goes on, and even becomes part of the supporting cast of Ahsoka.
* CassandraTruth: He's one of the few people in the New Republic who still sees the Imperial Remnant as a threat. As we all know, they eventually grow into the First Order.
* FriendOnTheForce:
** Slowly becoming one to Din Djarin as of Season 3 of The Mandalorian. After failing to convince his superiors to help Navarro, Captain Teva immediately seeks out the Mandalorians instead.
** Din Djarin then approaches Carson with an offer to help hunt down Imperial remnant. Carson claims that it would be against regulations, but Din knows that he thinks it a good idea.
* Leitmotif: In many of his appearances, Foreshadowing possibly as a hint of what awaits him in the future, he is accompanied not by music associated with the Rebellion or the New Republic, but by a slow rendition of the March of the Resistance.
* TheMainCharactersDoEverything: Shows up any time the New Republic needs a face in The Mandalorian. Whether it's following up on a prison escape, performing traffic stops, responding to pirate activity, recruiting Cara Dune, he and his X-Wing will be there.
* MauveShirt: He's a recurring New Republic pilot with a more significant role than the rest of his squadron. He's one of the only Republic soldiers to appear in both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: He's likely the one who recruited Cara Dune to leave Nevarro. While it was with good intentions, it leaves Nevarro without a marshal making them easier prey for Gorian Shard's gang.
* NoSympathy: At least around Elias Kane, whose backstory he doesn't buy and points out that she didn't defect, she became a convert after being captured.
* OldSoldier: He has been with the Rebellion since before Alderaan and is now one of a handful of patrol officers in the Rim around Nevarro.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure:
** On running the Razor Crests tags he discovers that there's an arrest warrant for the Mando. After reviewing details about the incident, and learning that Mando tried to save a New Republic Lieutenant, he decides to be lenient and lets Mando go on the condition that he fixes the inoperative tracking beacon on the Razor Crest.
--->Mando: Am I under arrest?\
Carson: Technically, you should be. But these are trying times.
** In "The Siege" he offers Cara Dune a position as official marshal of Nevarro, rather than turn her in for deserting the New Republic, as he believes the only way to deal with the Imperial Remnants in the Outer Rim is with the support of the local communities.
** When he runs into Din during The Book of Boba Fett he once again decides not to press charges against him for flying his new ship too close to a commercial starliner.
** When Greef Karga petitions him for aid against some pirates that invade Nevarro in The Mandalorians third season, he shoots his shot with the New Republic as thoroughly as possible before deciding to seek out the Children of the Watch instead.
* ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules: When Mando tries to tactfully bribe him with the bounties of the three convicts he imprisoned in episode 6, he flatly turns him down.
* SpottingTheThread: He catches onto Elias Kane's passive-aggressive prodding of his superior to not send aid to Nevarro, accurately calling her out for still thinking like an Imperial. He doesn't outright say as much, but it's obvious he strongly suspects where her loyalties still actually lie.
* TokenGoodCop: He seems to be the only senior New Republic law enforcement officer actually interested in investigating recent happenings in the Outer Rim, and he gets stonewalled at every turn by his superiors on Coruscant despite mounting evidence of Imperial Remnant activity. This leads to him going to the Mandalorians for help when SpacePirates lay siege to Nevarro.
