Context Characters / ChainChronicleClerics

Go To

TheMedic class of the game, Clerics tend to focus on either healing a single target in the team, or the whole team at once. Some rare-Arcana clerics also have the ability to heal debuffs like Poison, while others give passive bonuses or heal-over-time on top of their regular healing.

Unlike all the other classes, Clerics don't attack by default, and usually spend their turns healing the party. They do have a weak melee attack, but this only comes into play whenever an enemy manages to engage them in close combat.

!Tropes common to Clerics:
* TheMedic: As the Healing class of the game, they're obviously this.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: The class as a whole with the introduction of healers belonging to other classes.

-->Voiced by: Creator/AyaneSakura

A driven young woman, Marina is a junior member of the Healer's Guild, and along with Kain and Michidia, one of the first to enlist in the Volunteer Army. She takes her duties as a healer very seriously, but while this engenders respect from the people she helps and heals, it also makes it hard to stay in her company for too long due to how intimidating this makes her seem at times.
----
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: The reward she asks from the Hero when everyone acknowledges just how much she's changed during her travels with the Volunteer Army.
* CharacterDevelopment: Starts out taking her duties as a healer way too seriously, often times to the detriment of her own health. By her second 1-star Arcana quest however, Marina's learned to relax around her companions, which in turn makes her more approachable by the regular people the Volunteers aid on a regular basis.
* CrushBlush: Whenever the Hero praises her.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Marina has a bad habit of tripping over herself, doubly so whenever she's flustered or embarrassed.
* HeroWorshipper: Of Latty, the leader of the Healer's Guild.
* InfinityMinusOneSword: Her 4-star upgrade, especially to players without much luck in recruiting better clerics. Her skills heal for quite a lot, and her first ability increases her stats by ''30%'' whenever she's in play. She's this trope due to her skill only heals HP and not curing any ailments.
* InformedAttribute: According to Pirika Marina's new outfit is more revealing. However the 4-star Arcana art and her new sprite show that her dress is mostly still the same, barring the addition of a few accessories. There ''is'' a hint of a high slit, but that's it.
* PerpetualFrowner: Her default look, due to how seriously she always takes her duties as a healer. As Marina herself notes, she's not even sure if she could smile properly as a result.
* TheReliableOne: Marina does her job well, but her other partymates often point out that sometimes she takes things a little ''too'' seriously.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Kain x Michidia, though as she shares with Pirika, she doesn't really hold much hope for it. Yet.
* StarterEquipment: While Vanessa was chronologically introduced much earlier, Marina is the first actual Cleric you can use for your team.
* TookALevelInBadass: Her increased confidence is reflected in her 4-star Arcana version, where on top of her immunity to Daze she also gets a boost to her HP and Attack in battle, ''and'' the amount of damage she heals. Because of the latter, she essentially has the highest burst-heal value out of any 4-star cleric, only edged out by healers with heal-over-time specials.
* WhenSheSmiles: As Pirika points out, Marina looks quite cute when she finally does smile.

!!Katry
A young healer enlisted in the Healer's Guild. She certainly has passion to help people with her healing talent, but there's one problem. She's afraid of blood. Considering that healers are often employed in the front lines as battlefield medic, not to mention the war against Black Army has wounded so many soldiers, she has difficulty in doing her job.
----
* AfraidOfBlood: While this would be fine if she's a civilian, she's a medic who has to deal with the wounded daily. Her overarching story whenever she appears always deal with her overcoming her phobia, though it never permanently takes in; at one point, she ''faints'' after healing someone. She gets better with each encouragement.

!!Latty
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/latty_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:The Ivory Healer]]

The leader of the Vice Capital's Healer's Guild. She is old friends with Silva.
----
* BoringYetPractical: Her abilities are not flashy, but her increased range and one-mana group heal makes her very useful well into the late stages of the game. The fact that she's also a Two-Star Arcana makes her also very useful for the Titan's Challenge quest.
* CoolBigSis: For Marina.
* HypocriticalHumor: Scolds Silva for not considering his position as a Guild Leader when rushing off to battle the forces of the Black Army, ''when she's doing exactly the same thing''.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Despite being essentially the boss of the Healer's Guild, Latty couldn't stand idle while people got hurt on the front lines. She joined the Volunteer Army precisely because she wanted to be able to help where it was most needed.
* PassingTheTorch: At least she ''tries'' to do this. She decides it was about time for her to retire, and tries to get Marina as her successor as the leader of the Healer's Guild. When Marina turns her down however, she's left to question what she herself will have to do from that point on.

!!Kate
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kate_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:The Clumsy Nun]]

A nun from the Great Shrine, she joins the Volunteer Army to pay back for accidentally damaging the Hero's clothing through her fumbles. Although well-meaning, she's practically all-thumbs, somehow making her even more of a danger for the people around her.
----
* CuteClumsyGirl: Practically her schtick. She spends most of her Arcana quest tripping over herself and making a mess of the otherwise mundane chores she's helping with.
* GradualRegeneration: Rather than healing the whole group a set number of HP, Kate's special does this, giving gradual healing over time. More powerful versions of this appear in rarer Arcana like Noel or Lilith.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Due to her clumsiness, Kate has extremely low self-esteem. However, Pirika points out that her genuine drive to help people ''is'' a big deal.

!!Amelia

!!Hansi
A ship doctor working for the Dawn Maritime. Being a ship doctor, he's used to working with limited supplies, all the while weighing which one needs better medical attention and which one's not, even when there are multiple patients needing major attention. This ability gained him both fame and infamy in the seas around Dawn Maritime's territory. Oh, and...[[AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent don't mind the blade he carry around]]. [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial It's a legitimate medical tool, I tell you]].
----
* AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: Hansi is a rare example of a Cleric using a Blade-type weapon. Smart players could use him as a frontline medic in accordance to his skillset.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Just like the shadier members of Dawn Maritime, he's not evil, just really [[StealthPun fishy]].
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Because he had to constantly work with very limited medical supplies, he often has to make hard decisions regarding his patients... though he doesn't seem to hesitate at all. Because of his seemingly apathetic nature unbecoming of someone with such an important job, this puts him at odds with Marina. When he pointed out the difference between a maritime and a land doctor, you can't help but feel he had a point.
** His profile also states that he was banished after using a banned surgical technique to save a life.
* KnightInSourArmor: Despite having to work with limited supplies, he will still do his job anyway with little complaints.
* NightmareFetishist: At the end of his first character quest, he 'rewarded' Marina with a partial carcass of the monster that the group just defeated... which Marina refused in utter disgust.

!!Johan

* ChurchMilitant: Implied to be a part of one. He was allowed to carry a holy dagger only given to the enforcers of the church, though he doesn't display any fighting ability in battle.
* TheMole: The Church assigned him to enlist in the Volunteer Army in order to find out whether they will realize the Doctrine of Destruction. For the most part though, he's pretty ambivalent about it.

!!Melvina

* InfinityMinusOneSword: If a player's doesn't get far enough to get Marina's 4-star upgrade or just not lucky enough to draw Arietta, she can become an excellent substitute. Because she's only a 3-star, it's very easy to limit break her. And if you need more out of her, there are plenty of weapons that can give her auxiliary abilities according to your needs. Not to mention, her skills also cures poison, a very common ailment. As a result, it's not uncommon to heard of players who kept Melvina throughout the entire game.
* IntrepidMerchant: While she lacks the usual mercantile ability like all other merchants in game, she displays a certain sense of business in the story; she will sell her medicine for a cheap price to people worthy of healing, either by their deeds or by necessity. At the same time, she will jack up prices ''way'' above her usual when he's selling them to people she deemed unworthy.

!!Roy
[[quoteright:155:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roy0.jpg]]
A clergyman for the Holy Capital who walks the continent to directly help people instead of just praying, because he thinks that 'just praying' won't help anyone. Has a penchant for smoking with an appearance atypical for a priest.
----
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: On the receiving end of one, when a villager asked why his family got killed if divinities are real and why they can't brought back to life with it. He was speechless for a bit while admitting that even there are some things that are just not possible.
* AWorldHalfFull: A firm believer in this trope.
--> (after receiving a thank you for defending a village) "We have to get by on the tact that such people exist. We must believe we'll triumph."
* BadassPreacher: Being a Cleric-class, he can't effectively fight on the front lines, but he's willing to go there to heal the wounded and actively contribute in Volunteer Army's efforts. In battle, his ability increases the effect of his normal healing, and he's good at healing tanks.
** BadassPacifist: When a villager pelted him with stones, thinking that he and his group are to blame for the recent monster attack, he just stand there and took it.
* {{Expy}}: Appearance-wise, looks like a friendlier, ''nicer'' [[Literature/FateZero Kiritsugu Emiya]]. Coincidentally, his artist is involved in a [[VideoGame/FateExtra Nasuverse game]], and both Kiritsugu and Roy smoke cigarettes.
* NiceGuy: Assures Phoena that she helped the Volunteer Army a lot when she thinks that she only gets in everyone's way.
* SexyPriest: Has the look of one, complete with smoking a cigarette. Pirika (and you) can comment that he doesn't look like a priest at all with his appearance (despite genuinely trying to do his job); he remarked that appearance can be deceiving and claims to be a devout believer.
* SmokingIsCool: In his introduction, he smokes after a hard day's work, commenting that even a priest can smoke. Well, at least ''he'' can smoke, that is...

%%!!Adelle
%%A young nun serving the Shrine. Come from poor background, she is praised as a kind nun who understands the feelings of the weak. She joins the group, hoping to help the people at least a little.

%%She is a central character in the Chain Story ''Clergy Of The Battlefield''.
%%----

!!Arietta
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arietta_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:The Priestess of the Blossoms]]

A nun from the Great Shrine, Arietta has a great love of flowers, and would give out flowers to people during her spare time to lift their spirits. Her constantly positive attitude makes her a boon to the Volunteer Army, and helps buoy its own spirits during particularly trying times.
----
* BoringButPractical: Arietta's special is a party-wide heal that also happens to cure slow. Although it cures only a relatively small amount, equipping her with the craftable weapon Rod of Life turns this into ''moderate'' healing. All this for the cost of one mana!
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In a change from the usual recruits, the Hero and Phoena don't actually encounter Arietta at the tavern; instead, they run into her while she's distributing flowers to passers-by. When one of the people she gives flowers to turns out to be a huge jerk, she doesn't get angry, and when the same man gets injured in a monster attack, she heals him regardless of his earlier treatment of her.
* FamilyOfChoice: Arietta decides at the end of her final quest that, from that point on, the Volunteer Army will become her family. Phoena and Pirika are glad to have her.
* InfinityMinusOneSword: Arietta's special heals only a small amount of HP by default, and since she doesn't have the same Heal-over-Time ability as other clerics (which is sometimes preferable for boss rushes), she often gets overlooked. It bears to repeat however that her special only costs ''one mana'', cures slow, and when equipped with the Rod of Light cures ''moderate'' damage instead of small. After going through her personal quests, she also gains the abilities to heal the party member with the lowest HP at the start of a wave, plus increased range and a boost to her regular healing amount. Add to this that she's actually obtainable on through the Mission System on Global, and it make's her a boon to players who are able to get her.
* NiceGirl: Arietta is a constant source of sunshine for the people around her, even to those who were initially rude to her.
* SignatureScent: The smell of fresh blossoms follows Arietta around, and indeed Pirika uses this to track her down during her second Arcana quest.
* TragicKeepsake: A seed of the Uhuru Flower, which is a memento of the Shrine minister that first took her in. Unusual for this trope though, Arietta willingly gives this away, as she plants the seed among a group of other Uhuru plants the Hero and his friends find growing in the wilderness, because she felt that it would be much happier there.

-->''"This is for everyone."''
-->Voiced by: Creator/AyaneSakura
A member of a group of shrine maidens who protect the volcanoes of the Nine Territories. Among the group of shrine maidens, she has the highest tier of magic. Eruptions have caused disasters in the Nine Territories, convincing her to set off on a journey to find out how to appease the volcano responsible.
----
%%* BarrierMaiden: Downplayed, as she only protects the Nine Territories.
%%* KimonoFanservice
%%* LoveDodecahedron: What her quest is about.
* MadeOfIron: Her skill makes everyone in the party have their damage taken reduced for some time.

!!Lilith
[[quoteright:100:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lilith_icon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:100:The Chooser of the Saved]]
-->Voiced by: Creator/MikuItou (Japanese), Creator/SkylerDavenport (English)

A cleric from the Great Shrine, Lilith is one of a few people in her generation granted a special power, and a heavy responsibility to go along with hit. In her case, Lilith is a Selector, meaning that, when the End Times come, it is up to her to decide whether a person will be saved, and who will be left behind.

This is a terrible burden for someone so young, so Lilith decides to travel the world alongside the Volunteer Army, hoping that her experiences in the outside world would help her when that inevitable time comes for her to make her choice. Her quest for a conclusive answer to this dilemma is the focus of her Chain Story, ''The Lady of Salvation''.
----
* InfinityPlusOneSword: Considered to be ''THE'' best Cleric by most players who got her (at least until V2 released Tolerancia), due to her gradual healing skill that last for a whopping ''two minutes''. Sure, it costs two mana, which wouldn't be practical in a blitz tactic, but her skill can prevent a player from fighting a battle of attrition in a longer battle.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Was driven to tears after being invited to a flame sprite party. This is when she truly realize how heavy her job is after seeing how happy the sprites are frolicking about, realizing that deciding who lives and who dies isn't a simple matter even after understanding how other people would react in her position, and when it comes to it, she will be responsible for her decisions one way or another.
* NiceGirl: So much that, when [[ReformedCriminal Teresa]] insisted that she shouldn't be someone Lilith saves when the world came to an end, Lilith insists that she will save her either way, believing that everyone deserves a chance to live.
%%** TheMessiah
* StoryBreakerPower: As a Selector, she has been granted an ability to essentially ''wills someone or something out of existence'', which she uses a grand total of two times in her Chain Story. Because this would be ''very'' [[GameBreaker game-breaking]] in-game, it's explained that she doesn't want to use this power due to her fears, not to mention her doubts in choosing who lives and who dies. She still won't use this ability after this Chain Story, presumably because she's confident enough to decide for herself that she wouldn't resort to this, or because the prophesied End Times has come to pass and won't return for a long time.
* TwoGirlsAndAGuy: Formed this with [[ReformedCriminal Teresa]] and [[AWorldHalfFull Roy]] in her Chain Story.
* WalkingTheEarth: The focus of her Chain Story is to find an answer on who should she saves in the End Times. For this purpose, she asks this question to various people with differing philosophies, hoping that one person can gave her an enlightening answer. She eventually find an answer that finally clears her doubts, courtesy of [[spoiler: Gilbert]].
