A direct sequel to ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'' and ''Anime/DigimonAdventure02'' in celebration for the [[MilestoneCelebration franchise's 15th anniversary]]. Unlike the previous series, where it mostly focused on the new Chosen Children, ''tri.'' focuses on the original eight from ''Anime/DigimonAdventure''. The plot is set in 2005 (three years after ''Anime/DigimonAdventure02'') during the Chosen Children's[[note]]''original [="DigiDestined"=]''[[/note]] high school years, when some kind of digital distortion is causing "infected" Digimon to begin entering our world and running wild.

News first broke on [[http://digimon-adventure.net/tri/ this official website]] ([[http://digimon-adventure.net/tri/eng/ English version]],) which used to only consist of a trailer. If you skipped the trailer, clicked on the eggs, and enough ''nade-nade''[[note]]clicks of a special ''"Digi-Egg"''[[/note]] were applied, they would eventually hatch and more information would be released.

----
!!''Digimon Adventure Tri'' provides examples of:
[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Tropes A - C]]
* TwoDVisualsThreeDEffects: The CGI of the ferris wheel contrasts greatly against the more traditional art.
* TwentyMinutesIntoThePast: Since the official information stated that Taichi is 17 years old in this series (compared to Tai's age being 11 in ''Digimon Adventure'' and 14 in ''Digimon Adventure 02''), this season is set in the year 2005. Perhaps to convince you that the series is ''definitely'' set before [[TheNewTens 2010]], none of the cell phones onscreen are a smartphone.
* AdaptationNameChange: "[=DigiDestined=]" was a term created by the English dub to describe the children chosen by the Digital World. Up until then, fans of the original version often referred to them by the literal translation of the original Japanese term, "Chosen Children." However, the official subtitles for ''tri.'', as well as a screenshot in the first movie, have adapted "[=DigiDestined=]" as an in-character term used outside of Japan.[[note]]The character song album for the humans uses "Erabareshi kodomatachi" ("Chosen Children") in romaji, and the Japanese characters still refer to each other in that manner.[[/note]]
* AdaptationalVillainy: More adaptational antagonism: Alphamon. In the base lore of Digimon, the Digital Pets and TCG, Alphamon and Omegamon (Omnimon for the dub-watchers) are brothers in arms ([[MeaningfulName Name theme included]]), with the latter even being former's most trusted ally; Omegamon is even the keeper of Alphamon's Data whenever he is not available, effectively making him second-in-command. Taichi and Yamato's Omegamon, however, has no relation with this Alphamon, and they share no brotherhood whatsoever. In addition, most iterations of Alphamon have him as a stalwart opposer to Yggdrasil, usually being the OnlySaneMan amidst the Royal Knights when Yggdrasil goes too far. Here, Alphamon is one of Yggdrasil's agents, and assumedly supports its plans.
* AdvertisedExtra:
** Imperialdramon is shown prominently in the posters for ''Determination'', which helped stoke 02 fans in thinking they may acknowledge what happened in the beginning. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, it's played off as the monster of the week, complete with the Chosen Chidren nonchalantly killing it like it's just like one and none of the usual tropes playing out.]]
** [[spoiler:Ophanimon Falldown Mode]], despite being featured prominently on the poster for ''Coexistence'', literally only has about a minute most of screentime before [[spoiler:merging with Meicoomon's final form and doesn't do anything outside of that.]]
* AllThereInTheManual: Promotional "Hyper Colosseum" cards featuring antagonistic Digimon featured in movie releases indicate that the Imperialdramon and Mugendramon featured in movies 2 and 4 are infected Digimon, like Kuwagamon and Ogremon from movie 1.
* ArcNumber: ''3'', since it is the third series that follows the Digidestined from ''Digimon Adventure''. And things that are divisible by three. Nine Digidestined. Nine Digimon. Six movies. There are even three Kuwagamon in the first movie. [[spoiler:Even the virus is an example, changing the base code of the digital world into tertiary.]]
* ArcWords: "We cannot stay as children forever." Indeed, Tri is about the CharacterDevelopment of how the Chosen Children become adults.
* ArmiesAreUseless: They try to fight Ordinemon in ''Our Future'', but conventional military forces against a fifty-foot tall ''thing''?
* ArtShift: Unlike how cartoony-looking ''Anime/DigimonFusion'' and past incarnations are, this entry in the series depicts the human children with sharper and more mature looks, though its style is still similar to ''Digimon Adventure'' and ''Digimon Adventure 02''.
* AudienceShift: This is the one of the few ''Digimon'' animations to be targeted at adults, following the video games and X-Evolution in having more mature plotlines, as well as the franchise as a whole shifting towards the adult market. Since the anime films are geared towards an audience that grew up watching ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'', and many of the said fans happen to be adults, this is deliberately {{invoked|Trope}}.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:This is revealed to be Himekawa and the Mysterious Man's plan. They wanted to reboot the Digital World so all Digimon would be revived, even Digimon who were killed in the real world.]]
* BigShutUp:
** Tai, in ''Coexistence'', when he finally has too much of Meiko blaming herself for everything (though he does immediately apologise).
** Yamato, in ''Our Future'', at Hackmon, as it starts monologuing about Homeostasis' plan.
* BittersweetEnding:
** The end of ''Confession'' [[spoiler:has all the Digimon caught in the rift moments before a Reboot occurs, resetting the Digital World and all of the Digimons' memories. Then the children manage to enter the digital world and meet their amnesiac partners.]]
** The end of ''Our Future'': [[spoiler:Gatomon is freed from Ordinemon, the backed-up memories of all Digimon affected by the reboot are restored, Ordinemon's destruction closes all distortions and ends the infection, Homeostasis has initiated a reboot of Yggdrasil, the ''02'' cast are found and are receiving treatment, Koushiro[=/=]Izzy is working on a way to move between worlds without the distortions or D-3 Digivices, and the partners of the Adventure cast get to stay in the Real World. However, Daigo is ''dead'', Maki is either dead or lost in the Dark Ocean (and her reasons for forcing the reboot were AllForNothing), Meicoomon had to be killed and can never reincarnate due to dying on Earth, Hikari[=/=]Kari sees Taichi as a BrokenPedestal over his decision to MercyKill Meicoomon (and probably won't forgive him for it), Meiko moves away in the wake of Meicoomon's death, public opinion on Digimon is just as divided as ever, the partners of hundreds if not thousands of Chosen Children are unaccounted still for following the reboot, including those of the ''02'' cast, and Alphamon and the Mysterious Man are still loose, with the latter now in possession of Apocalymon's data and is looking to obtain more from the likes of ''Diablomon and Demon'']].
* BlandNameProduct:
** In ''Determination'', Mimi suggests that they theme the school festival cafe after "Daters", a version of Hooters where the waitresses dress in cheerleader outfits. It's "popular in America".
** During ''Confession'', Hikari and Gatomon get ice cream from "Daskin Robbins".
* BookEnds:
** The trailer indicates this will happen. The original Digimon Adventure movie started with Taichi in a field narrating about the events that were about to take place and then ended with him hugging Greymon while saying "That's why I'm here." The field returns, though it's an older Taichi and Agumon this time and it once again ends with the two about to hug as Taichi says "That's why I'm here."
** Kouji Wada's last new recording was for the new version of "Butter-fly", which not only was his first major recording, but the first opening theme for the ''Digimon'' anime as a whole.[[note]]The new version of "Seven" recycles the lead vocal track from a previous version, likely because Wada was too sick to record again.[[/note]]
*** "Butter-fly" doubles down with this trope in ''tri.'', as it will also be used as the ending credits theme to ''Our Future'', albeit as an alternate version which adds the main voice cast plus Ai Maeda and Ayumi Miyazaki alongside Wada's vocal track.
* BreatherEpisode: The first part of ''Determination'' (episode 5 in the serialized version), spends its time in the hot spring, taking a break between Alphamon appearing and setting up for Mimi's and Joe's character arcs.
* TheBusCameBack:
** Mimi is back from America because of her father's work, after being overseas for all of ''Digimon Adventure 02'' ([[CommutingOnABus though this didn't really stop her from making regular appearances in that season]]).
** Ken makes his return as the Digimon Kaiser in ''Determination'', despite apparently getting destroyed in the intro of ''Reunion''. [[spoiler:The third part reveals it was actually Gennai disguised as Ken, but the trope still applies for Gennai himself. Only to be [[ZigZaggedTrope zigzagged]] later on with the Mysterious Man ''not'' being Gennai, and both the real Gennai and Ken being found by Taichi and Daigo later on.]]
** As of ''Our Future'', [[spoiler:Holydramon[=/=]Magnadramon is coming back as Tailmon/Gatomon's Mega form]]. Also returning for the movie is [[spoiler:Devimon]].
* CallBack: You could call this ''Digimon Callback'', since it has so many references to the first two seasons:
** Everyone has the original Digivices from the first season, except Hikari and Takeru who prominently use the D-3 from the second season.
** Their first opponents in the series are a group of Kuwagamon. [[CurbStompBattle Of course, unlike the first time, they do a bit better against them.]] When Greymon shoves Kuwagamon into the Digital World, they also land on a familiar looking cliff, which also breaks.
** Sora's phone has a 'No Signal' screen which shows Piyomon, in the old art style, sleeping.
** While it's much more advanced, Koushiro is still carrying around a Pineapple computer.
** Daigo informs Tai and Matt the government department he works with started investigating Digimon after Myotismon's attack from the first series.
** In ''02'' the portals between the Digital World and Earth are most commonly accessed through computer monitors (on Earth) and television screens (in the Digital World). Here, Koushiro is able to create his own private cyberspace for the Digimon that is accessed in the same way.
** One of the sources of information for the government committee the Digidestined work for is a man named Gennai. [[spoiler:This becomes [[ChekhovsGun important later]] as Maki reveals she has been working with him behind the Digidestined's back since the beginning. Later though this Gennai is revealed to be an imposter having tricked ''everyone'' into thinking he's Gennai while the real one is left comatose with the ''02'' kids.]]
** Hikari says she'll miss Taichi's soccer game because she's going to a birthday party. She missed out on the action in ''Our War Game'' for the same reason.
** [[Anime/DigimonXEvolution Alphamon and Omegamon have appeared together in a previous Digimon movie as foes]]. Albeit it was Alphamon's previous forms that fought Omegamon.
** Takeru being popular among the girls at school, similar to how he was popular in the basketball episode in 02.
** Omegamon's appearance being met with reverence. ''[[Recap/DigimonAdventureMovieOurWarGame Our War Game]]'' had an angelic sounding backing song. In Tri an orchestrated version of Brave Heart plays as all the Digidestined are dead silent.
** Koushirou orders a second Oolong tea at a restaurant... you'd think [[PottyEmergency he'd learn after]] ''[[Anime/DigimonTheMovie Our War Game]]''.
** Taichi and Yamato still find a way to be at each other's throats over a difference in opinion not unlike when they were young.
** Mimi sings ''I wish'' to distract some hot springs visitors. It's also the song she chose to wake [=TonosamaGekomon/ShogunGekomon=] in ''Digimon Adventure''.[[note]]This was an in-joke, as Creator/AiMaeda, who played Mimi in the first two seasons, also sang "I Wish."[[/note]]
** Takeru asks if Meiko is from Shimane, like his grandmother, and Taichi describes Shimane as "the place with no computers," referencing ''Our War Game.''
** When trying to shake Meiko out of her funk, Sora brings up Agumon's previous experiences with dark digivolution.
** Kari gets possessed by the same entity from the Digital World just like she did back in ''Adventure'' in order to provide exposition.
** Gabumon asks Yamato to play his harmonica again.
** Himekawa brings Ken's D3 and D-Terminal to the place of the last digital disruption to have the kids open a gate to the Digital World.
** [[spoiler:The way the children meet their partners again is through Kari's whistle, and they meet again at the same lake where they left the Digital World in the finale of ''Adventure''.]]
** The way [[spoiler:[=MetalSeadramon=]]] is defeated in ''Loss'' mirrors his defeat in the original series: by getting ran through via [[spoiler:[=WarGreymon=]'s Great Tornado.]]
** In ''[[Anime/DigimonTheMovie Our War Game]]'' there was a RunningGag in which Sora was angry at Tai and kept calling him 'baka'. At the end of the movie she finally forgave him when she received a rather [[ShipTease tender e-mail from him]], but stilled called him 'baka'. In ''Loss'', she calls him 'baka' again, first bitterly, when he awkwardly tries and fails to console her, and then more happily and teasingly at the end when he apologises for earlier.
** When the Digidestined and the Digimon got separated some of them went to some familiar places that they went to before like Mimi and Tentomon landed in Shogungekomon's palace, Takeru landed in Village of Beginnings, etc.
* CallForward: The characters make several allusions to their careers in the epilogue of ''02'', showing that they are starting to become the adults they are going to be.
** Hints are shown of Tai's future career as an ambassador to the Digital World which was shown in the ''02'' epilogue.
*** Tai struggles with an assignment that basically asks "what do you want to be when you grow up." When brainstorming with his teacher he says he wants to see an old friend who lives far away in a place hard to get to (such as the Digital World), thinking of Agumon, and gets the suggestion he should study foreign languages if he wants to travel.
*** Tai starts to show signs of greater empathy. In ''Reunion'' he stops Matt from getting into a fight with some guys from making derogatory remarks about the Digimon. In ''Determination'' he stops Matt again, this time from badmouthing Joe for not showing up to a fight. He's the only one in ''Confession'' who's able to guess that the Digimon are keeping something (the reboot) secret from them. In ''Loss'' he tries to console Sora Biyomon losing her memories. He does a bad job of it, not entirely understanding why she's upset, but he still provides some astute insights into Sora's character. In other words, while he isn't perfect yet, he's showing an increased ability to read people and express sympathy for them, something that would come in useful as an ambassador (contrast this with a moment in ''Adventure'' when he tells Mimi to "get over it" as she's grieving for some recently fallen allies).
** Matt's band seems not long-lasting. In ''Reunion'', Matt's old band broke up due to musical difference and he renamed his band from ''Teen-Age Wolves'' to Knife of Day. In ''Determination'', a band was created just for the school's culture festival named World on the Knife.
*** At the end of ''Our Future'', Matt considers Daigo's final advice, and decides to aim for space.
** Sora helps Meiko with her outfit in the second movie, hinting at her later career as a fashion designer in the ''02'' epilogue.
** Izzy has always been a researcher and more concerned with the technical aspects of the digital world, so it's no surprise he continues on that trajectory.
** Mimi's generally associated with food in this series. She runs a cafe for school's culture festival, and also develops fondness for rather ''unique'' food combination, such as putting whipped cream and jelly beans on top of Sora's savory cooking, a trait she seems to imitate from her mother who was shown to put whipped cream and strawberries as a topping for kimchi fried rice in ''Adventure''. In the epilogue to ''02'', she's a chef with her own cooking show.
** Joe is cramming to get into med school. Like Izzy, this carries over from ''Adventure'' and ''02'' on a trajectory towards becoming a Digimon doctor.
** T.K.'s blog can be seen as an earlier phase of his career as a novelist.
* CallingYourAttacks: Largely averted, a rarity for the franchise. The only consistent exceptions are Togemon calling out Needle Spray and [[spoiler:the new Mega levels]] calling out their new attacks. Some of the evolutions aren't called out either.
* TheCameo: News reporter Chiaki Matsuzawa (who was also the MC for some of the ''Digimon'' events) made an appearance as an animated version of herself in one of the films.
* CanonImmigrant:
** Gomamon's later Mega/Ultimate Evolutions, Vikemon, made his first appearance in animated form after he appeared in the ''Digimon Adventure'' RPG.
** Seraphimon and Holydramon/Magnadramon appear in ''Loss'' and ''Our Future'' respectively after they made their first appearance in the second 02 movie, Hurricane Touchdown![=/=]The Golden Digimentals, though some fans reject it for being a NonSerialMovie.
** [[spoiler:Yggdrasil]] finally makes its debut in the ''Adventure'' series after appearing in later properties.
** [[Literature/DigimonAdventure The novelization]] of ''Adventure'' implied that the original Chosen Children briefly mentioned were partners to the Digimon who later became the Four Digimon Sovereigns, which part 4 seemingly confirms.
* CantCatchUp: For once, averted. The other partner Digimon also get to digivolve to their Mega Levels.
* CleaningUpRomanticLooseEnds: ''Our Future'' gives some romantic closure in a MaybeEverAfter sort of way. [[spoiler:Takeru tells Hikari that he's worried about her as he holds her shoulders, which is depicted as romantic, as Patamon gets embarrassed and looks away, blushing.]] On the other hand, [[spoiler:Taichi seems to have moved on from Sora, and at the end of the movie, he is seen blushing when he phones Meiko, with the other Digimon and [=DigiDestined=] looking urgently at him as if they're trying to get him to give her a LoveConfession.]]
* CluelessMystery: ''Tri'' is awfully, ''awfully'' coy with the audience, dangling disastrously important threads of information and then seemingly abandoning them.
** The biggest example is the 02 Chosen, who were conspicuously absent from affairs after being shown getting defeated at the start of ''Reunion'', but for some reason ''no one'' saw fit to talk about them, including the Chosen. The only information known for sure about them until ''Our Future'' is that they were MIA -- literally everything else was unexplained and open for interpretation, down to Alphamon's role in whatever disaster had befallen them. [[spoiler:In ''Our Future'', it was revealed that they had been taken out on Yggdrasil's orders, and Himekawa had ordered Daigo to cover up their disappearance, and the other Chosen has no idea.]]
** For the first half of ''Tri'', the villains/antagonists refused to talk at all. We don't have any clear idea of what they're up to until the fourth movie.
* TheCorruption: The virus. Initial effects include Digimon becoming pixelated and going berserk. Later on, it also gives them blank white eyes and turns them purple.
* CosmicRetcon: [[spoiler:At the end of part 3, the Digital World gets rebooted to the way it was when it was created in order to combat the infection, which includes resetting the partner Digimon to their first stage and wiping their memories. Or that's what we're ''told'' it did, but Alphamon and Jesmon are already in their Mega stages only a week later, which the kids point out doesn't make sense. In Part 4, we see that Meicoomon also stayed in Adult/Champion form.]]
** [[spoiler:Part 6 finally explains that Meicoomon held all the backup data Koushiro/Izzy created for the Digital World, which allowed her to retain her form. By releasing this data from her, all Digimon regain their memories from before the Reboot.]]
** [[spoiler:Homeostasis' plan to get rid of Ordinemon and thwart Yggdrasil's plan in ''Our Future'' is to try and reboot the human world. Fortunately, the kids manage to persuade Hackmon to help them, and it doesn't happen.]]
* CosplayCafe: This is basically the idea that Mimi comes up with for the school festival, based off an American restaurant chain called "Daters", which itself is based off of the real life "[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooters Hooters]]" restaurant chain.[[note]]For the uninformed, Hooters is ''not'' a maid cafe. It's just a restaurant chain where the waitresses happen to wear tank tops and short shorts.[[/note]]
* CueTheSun: The majority of ''Our Future'' takes place at night. Once Ordinemon goes down, the sun starts coming up.
* CutenessProximity: Meicoomon seems to invoke this among others frequently in the latter half of ''Determination'', particularly affecting Leomon (and an entire crowd of people) heavily.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes D - N]]
* DarkerAndEdgier:
** Within the first five minutes alone, the film is already filled with an existential monologue and the ''02'' children being curb-stomped by Alphamon. The franchise is targeted at teens and adults now, rather than kids.
** Series-wise, ''Confession'', the third movie, is considerably darker than the first two. There's almost no humor, the implications of the ''Determination'' movie ending drive the entire plot, [[spoiler:and the ending is possibly one of the most bittersweet conclusions of the entire franchise]]. Even the soundtrack is way bleaker and more emotional, and the opening of the first chapter doesn't even have "Butter-fly" playing. [[spoiler:It ''does'' play towards the end as the Chosens reopen the gate to the Digital World, though.]]
* ADayInTheLimelight: Each installment seems to focus on two individual Digidestined. "Reunion" focused on Tai and Matt, "Determination" focused on Mimi and Joe and "Confession" focused on Koushiro and Takeru. ''Loss'' changes the format to focus on Sora. ''Coexistence'' focuses on Hikari and Meiko.
* {{Deconstruction}}: Several points that were taken for granted in ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'' and ''Anime/DigimonAdventure02'' are played more realistically:
** The {{Paper Thin Disguise}}s that were shown to work almost flawlessly in ''Adventure'' prompt a waitress to note that they have some "very unusual-looking friends".
** The HeroInsurance that the kids had in the earlier series is discarded, and the collateral damage incurred by fighting the Digimon makes Taichi seriously reconsider whether it's a good thing to be a DestructiveSaviour (''02'' had only barely touched on this when a director complained that they'd just rebuilt the Fuji TV station, but it hadn't been brought up otherwise).
** Back in the old movies if Joe missed out the action, it was treated as a big joke. Here, we see the repercussions of his constant absence and how he's emotionally distressed about it and feels conflicted over whether to help his friends or keep studying.
** Many of the partner Digimon start to become infected, and Patamon goes so far as to ask to be killed if he turns and attacks the others.
** Part 4 really explores just what the bond between Digimon and human means: [[spoiler:Maki worked tirelessly for years to reboot the Digital World to get back her partner, Tapirmon, but when Tapirmon doesn't recognize her because of said reboot she very clearly snaps, and her reaction freaks Tapirmon out something fierce. It really makes you wonder what would have happened to T.K. had Patamon not come back after beating Devimon.]]
** The series as a whole deconstructs the children's crests with:
*** Yamato's crest is friendship, which is shown by his loyalty to the Digimon, but because of this, he refuses to acknowledge any criticism of the partner Digimon, even if it's a legitimate fear, which causes arguments with Taichi.
*** Joe's crest is reliability, which is shown that he's torn between studying to make his parents proud and fighting alongside his friends. Joe is stuck between both responsibilities, which makes him hate himself.
*** Mimi's crest is purity, which is shown by her being true to herself. However, her tendency of not listening to others caused others, even Koushiro, to think she's just being selfish instead.
*** Takeru's crest is hope, which is shown by his belief that things will work themselves out. However, when Patamon is infected, he desperately clings to the hope that Patamon can be cured as he waits.
*** Koushiro's crest is knowledge, which is shown by his workaholic tendencies. But due to these tendencies he works himself to exhaustion. As a result, he fails to notice that the Digimon are infected until it's nearly too late. Koushiro's character development in ''Adventure'' entailed him learning to pay attention to what's going on away from his computer and using his knowledge to help his friends, so the events of ''Tri.'' represent a serious backslide for him.
*** Sora's crest is love, which is shown by her TeamMom traits. On the other hand, as Taichi states, her tendency to take care of others while ignoring her own needs means that no one is able to help ''her'' when she's troubled.
*** Hikari's crest is light, which is shown by her MysteriousWaif tendencies and her ability to empower Digimon, as well as being possessed by BigGood Homeostastis. [[spoiler:Due to Taichi's apparent death, Hikari is corrupted by grief, which empowers Tailmon negatively and makes it dark evolves to Ofanimon: Falldown Mode]].
*** Taichi's crest is courage, which is what defines Taichi as a leader and is thoroughly deconstructed throughout the series after his impulsive actions in the first film. [[spoiler:In ''Our Future'', Taichi has to accept that in order to be an effective leader, he must also be willing to make decisions that he'll be hated for and have the courage to go through with mercy killing Meicoomon when it becomes apparent that they can not save her.]]
* DependingOnTheWriter: More like "Depending on the Marketing Department": ''Digimon Adventure tri.'' integrates a lot of terminology introduced from the original English dub of ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'', such as "[=DigiDestined=]" as the official English term to refer to the main characters. Originally, they also used their own English translations for their crests on Bandai's products (such as "Honesty" instead of "Reliability", "Purity" instead of "Sincerity"), but their collaboration with Japanese eyewear brand Glasses Ichiba lists the [[https://www.meganeichiba.jp/brand/digimon/ crest names in English by names from the English dub]].
* DenserAndWackier: Zigzagged. There were plenty of hijinks in the earlier installments, but ''tri.'' represents a tonal shift in the ''Digimon Adventure'' continuity that has less to do with the kind of serious content that a kid can't sit through and more of the kind of adult humor that no one wants children to repeat.
* DeusExMachina: In "Our Future", [[spoiler:Wizardmon gets TheCameo when he shows up without warning or explanation to rescue Gatomon from being trapped in Ophanimon. The closest thing to {{Foreshadowing}} this moment gets is that part of his outfit can be seen on the RealLife poster for the movie]].
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler:At the end of ''Coexistence'', Tai and Daigo are presumably obliterated by Jesmon's final attack. Neither is likely to be actually dead, and Tai outright appears later in ''Our Future''. However, while Tai turns out to be virtually unharmed, Daigo is mortally wounded by the attack and dies shortly after.]]
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: The ending of ''Our Future'' which is also the opening song, is sung by the Digidestined, including Meiko.
* DubInducedPlotHole:
** The dub of ''02'' said that the older kids, in their green school uniforms, were in high school instead of the Japanese version's middle school, due in part to differences between Japanese and American school grade systems and in part to the dub adding an extra year to the TimeSkip between ''Adventure'' and ''02''. ''Tri'' shows the older kids ''actually'' in high school and wearing light blue uniforms that are very clearly not the same as the green ones while the younger kids in middle school are wearing the green ones.
** [[spoiler:The dub claims that the man who looks like Gennai's younger self is him, but ''Our Future'' reveals that the real Gennai has been in stasis in the same lab as the ''02'' children the entire time. Considering the mystery man is deliberately sowing confusion and chaos, it's likely that calling himself "Dark Gennai" is just another bit of misinformation meant to addle the Digidestined more.]]
* DubNameChange: Aside from the ones carried over from the original Digimon Adventure dubs, the BigBad of the series is repeatedly called [[spoiler:King Drasil instead of Yggdrasil]].
* DyingAsYourself: Invoked. [[spoiler:While not really dying per se, being Rebooted will eliminate any trace of the Digimon's old memories, effectively killing the 'old' Digimon and create a new one in its place. During the battle with Meicoomon, every Digimon except [=HerculesKabuterimon=] is corrupted by the infection. [=HerculesKabuterimon=] then shouts to them that they cannot part with their human partners in these demonic forms. The shout is strong enough that all Digimons manage to overcome the infection for a moment. They share one last hug with each other while [=HerculesKabuterimon=] pushes all of them (including Meicoomon, who is trapped between them all) into the distortion portal as the Reboot countdown ends.]]
* ElephantInTheLivingRoom: It's amazing how the 02 kids manage to be so important and yet so unimportant at the same time. After some {{Wham Shot}}s of the 02 kids being laid low by Alphamon, the films and cast proceed to blatantly ignore them for most of the series without ever establishing why they were being ignored. [[spoiler:Even the appearance of the apparent Digimon Kaiser and finally discovering the 02 kids (out of sheer dumb luck) fails to yield the reason they were being ignored--for all intents and purposes the main cast was completely ignorant of their situation]].
* EuphemismBuster: When Hackmon explains to Daigo and Meiko's father that Homeostasis "removed", Meiko's father cuts in to point out they mean "''killed.''"
* ExtraStrengthMasquerade: Somehow, despite the Digidestined saving the world three times now in full view of the world, and a worldwide Digimon invasion happened, people still seem surprised by Digimon. It is deconstructed because, as a realistic result of this trope, the muggles are not cheering for the Digimon who have already saved their world several times. Instead, they don't know who's the good guy and who's the bad guy. The last fifth of ''Confession'' (or the start of episode 13 on Crunchyroll) implies that, once all the damage done from the various Digimon battles are repaired or replaced, no one will talk about the Digital World any more. It should be pointed out that the closure of the Digital World about a year before ''Reunion'' separated the good Digimon from their partners, therefore preventing the muggles from learning more about the behavior of Digimon and the Digital World as a whole.
* FailedASpotCheck: During ''Confession'', Patamon goes berserk and there are several seconds of him and Takeru wrestling as the latter tells him frantically to calm down. Joe, who is only a few feet away when this happens, notices precisely nothing, even when standing right behind Takeru.
* FanservicePack: With the art shift and time skip, everyone in the main cast now looks very attractive for their ages. Promotional material has exploited this with promotional pin-ups of the gang in skimpy or fancy clothing -- in particular, the pin-ups are [[ExcusePlot bending over backwards]] to get the girls in bikinis [[RuleOfSexy even out of season]], be it [[https://40.media.tumblr.com/69854fa7dda01c5f6cf71a40e730fba0/tumblr_o4676pG8yl1rrivx2o1_540.jpg St. Valentine's Day]] or [[https://images.withthewill.net/tri_animedia_xmas_medium_november11_2016.jpg Christmas]]. [[https://40.media.tumblr.com/13dfd25beaf994adae7ad3a9446e7e67/tumblr_o4676pG8yl1rrivx2o2_500.jpg The boys get to wear white suits]] for White Day, with Taichi holding a pink box implying whatever is in that box is the "reply", and a similar promotional pin-up with the guys dressed in [[https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/1d/e2/bb/1de2bb4abb60d769ca3a764bffdf4439.png Christmas-themed trunks.]]
* FantasticRacism: In ''Coexistence'', Meicrackmon's rampage results in massive anti-Digimon fear, with the kids getting arrested just for being around Digimon.
* FateWorseThanDeath: For Patamon at least, he would rather die than forget about Takeru. [[spoiler:Sadly in ''Confession'', he willingly gives up his memories to keep the human world safe.]]
* FauxlosophicNarration: The narration of the opening sequence is saturated with neoplatonic jargon [[spoiler:[[MeaninglessMeaningfulWords that only serves to obscure the fact]] that [=MaiCoomon=] was infected with Apocalymon's data.]]
-->''In the beginning, there was the soulless creator, Demiurge, Idea, the true figure of the world, and only shapeless chaotic souls had existed in the entire universe. Demiurge does not know of the existence that created him. Nor the existence of the soul. Nor even of Idea. The world he created was merely a shadow of the true world...''
* FemaleGaze: ''Determination'' provides us with a HotSpringsEpisode, with plenty of shots of the guys in nothing but their skivvies or a towel. And at the last quarter of the same movie, you get to see Taichi changing his clothes after the game.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** The new animations for digivolving showed the evolved forms initially being black with 0's, 1's and 2's dotting their bodies, despite data traditionally being binary. [[spoiler:''Confessions'' reveals that the corruption is the digital make-up being changed from binary to a new system, with 2 being the symbol that overwrites the traditional binary.]]
** After Daigo reveals who he is, it's mentioned that while his department worked with Gennai, they haven't heard from him in a while.
** At the end of ''Reunion'', [[spoiler:Meiko and Meicoomon both say "dandan", a local dialect for saying "thanks". This becomes important in ''Our Future'', as it was the password to unlocking the file storing all the Digimons' memories]].
** In ''Confession'', [[spoiler:despite the digital world being rebooted, two of the first Digimon the kids meet are Alphamon and Jesmon, two Ultimate-levels fighting each other. How that is possible has not yet been revealed. It's also worth noting that Jesmon is the Mega form Hackmon (who previously appeared in ''Determination'') is primarily associated with]].
** The mysterious opening to ''Reunion'' shows [[spoiler:Miyako's glasses shattered on the ground]], and the end of ''Loss'' shows [[spoiler:Meiko's glasses shattering after being throttled by Dark Gennai, a servant of Yggdrasil. In ''Our Future'' Daigo confirms this connection by confessing to Taichi that the ''02'' quartet got a lead on Yggdrasil's plans and were defeated in their rogue operation to stop it prior to ''Reunion''.]]
* ForgottenFallenFriend: The ''02'' cast is briefly shown receiving a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown at the start of the first movie, which becomes an ElephantInTheLivingRoom when the cast fail to mention them once the Digimon arrive. This silence dominates the series, with the cast ignoring the issue unless explicitly confronted with it, like the arrival of the Kaiser and Imperialdramon in the second movie or Taichi accidentally finding the kids near the finale. The issue is only willingly looked into for a few perfunctory minutes at the start of the third movie, which ends following [[BlatantLies an obvious snow-job]] by Maki.
* FourIsDeath: The fourth installment is titled "Loss," and features both Mugendramon/Machinedramon and Metalseadramon as antagonists. Combined with Meicoomon and the Mysterious Man, there's a grand total of four villains. Doubles as a CallBack to the [[EliteFour Dark Masters]] from the first series. [[spoiler:It also seems to end with Meiko being choked to death by the Mysterious Man.]]
* FreezeFrameBonus:
** A short way into ''Reunion'', Himekawa and Nishijima are on the phone discussing Digimon sightings, and Himekawa has a digital map on her computer screen. Apparently, the map is supposed to be tracking the locations of the Digidestined in real time, because the icons for Davis, Cody, and Ken all read "UNKNOWN" in bright red letters.
** As the partner Digimon [[TransformationSequence evolve]] in the first three films, their codes are shown to be written in ternary, hinting that they have already been infected.
* FullyClothedNudity: Mimi and Meiko's school festival outfits (which are basically cheerleader uniforms) are treated like this, especially with Meiko freaking out and trying to cover herself.
* GeniusLoci: [[spoiler:Through ''Coexistence'', the Digital World seems to want the Digidestined dead, with Hikari stating it outright hates them being there. The others speculate it's because of the Reboot.]]
* TheGhost: Joe's girlfriend is mentioned a couple of times, but is never seen. The others question if she is even real.
* GodzillaThreshold: ''Confession'' reveals that [[spoiler:a reboot of the Digital World is this. Maki states that in case the Digital World is too damaged, a reboot can be done to fix it but she also states that causing a reboot might just sink the Digital World. Homeostasis is only considering this as the virus caused by Meicoomon is not only going to destroy the Digital Worlds but all parallel worlds created by the digital network, which would destroy all technology on the human world. Worse, ''Loss'' reveals this was the villains' goal, by spreading the virus and causing as much destruction to the Digital World in order to force Homeostasis to reboot the Digital World so all digimon would come back to life.]]
** ''Our Future'' extends this to [[spoiler:Homeostasis wanting to reboot '''the real world''', in order to save it Ordinemon]].
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: Taichi's new pair of goggles can see "digital distortions" because of Koushiro's modifications.
* GoneHorriblyRight: So Koushiro tried to create a backup of [[spoiler:the partner Digimon's memories to be restored after the reboot. It worked...but not only did Meicoomon download all of that data instead and kept it to herself, but it's also implied she downloaded the data of ''the entire Digital World'' in the process and secured it with a password!]]
* GrandTheftMe:
** Kari gets a phone call from her inactive cell phone, and Homeostasis possesses her body, [[CallBack again]]) to go give the Digimon a message.
** [[spoiler:In the opening of "Loss", Himekawa also got taken over by Homeostasis before losing her own partner, Tapirmon.]]
** [[spoiler:Homeostasis comes back in ''Coexistence'', and this time Kari makes it clear she ''really'' doesn't like being involuntarily taken over to be used as a mouthpiece.]]
* HeKnowsTooMuch: [[spoiler:It's practically the reason why the ''02'' kids got defeated in the beginning of ''Reunion'', because they had found out about Yggdrasil's plans.]]
* HopeSpot:
** When all of the Digimon [[spoiler:get infected]] with 10 minutes until reboot, Koshiro sets up a backup port that allows him to collect the data of all of their Digimon so that [[spoiler:their memories won't get erased when the reboot happens]]. However, even though [=HerculesKabuterimon=] is able to hold the Digimon enough to push them back into the distortion, [[spoiler:none of them got to the backup port in time]]. [[spoiler:Subverted, when it's revealed in ''Our Future'' that during the confrontation Meicoomon's data was mixed in and as a result she got all of the Digimons' memories from before the reboot]].
** During ''Coexistence'', during a fight between Meicoomon and everyone else, there's a moment where she leaps in front of Meiko, giving the possibility there is some of her still in there somewhere. However, the fight progresses, and the kids don't get another chance to reach out to her.
* HotSpringsEpisode: The first quarter of ''Determination'' has the group (minus Joe) bathing at a hot spring. Instead of the usual female fanservice, we get scenes like Koshiro washing himself, Taichi and Yamato in the sauna, and Nishijima in his underwear. The credits sequence has the boys in yukatas.
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: The subtitle to each film in Japanese ("Saikai" for the first, etc.) is a single word written in two kanji. Zig-zagged by the last film's subtitle, "Bokura no Mirai", where "bokura no" is spelled with four hiragana and "mirai" is spelled with two kanji. The English dub approximates this by making each subtitle one word each, shortening ''Our Future'' to just ''Future'' to fit the pattern, although the UK release still uses the two-word subtitle.
* IgnoredVitalNewsReports: During ''Reunion'', Hikari overhears an important news report, but by the time she brings it to Taichi's attention, the news is over, and has gone to an advert.
* ImplausibleDeniability: During ''Confession'', Biyomon and Meicoomon are seen moving by a guest at the spa. They immediately try to pretend to be stuffed toys, not getting how this isn't going to work.
* {{Irony}}: In 02, Takeru openly contradicted Daisuke for balking at the prospect of having to ShootTheDog in the form of fighting and potentially slaying an enslaved [=MetalGreymon=]. When Takeru confronts the possibility of [[spoiler:having to destroy an infected Patamon, he shuts down emotionally]].
* JustPlaneWrong: At the beginning of ''Confession'' a Boeing 747 has to do an emergency landing because the Autopilot for landing can't be switched on and the systems malfunction. First of all, pilots only use the Autopilot for landing if the weather conditions are too bad (thick fog is a reason). And second, an experienced pilot flying a commercial airliner should be capable to land a plane without using the electronic systems. Thats what he was trained for. Especially the last point can't be handwaved by artistic license, because the pilot already has a clear view of the landing strip when he panics. Maybe the RuleOfCool demands him to do an overdramatic emergency landing.
* LampshadeHanging: Early on in ''Coexistence'', when Meiko goes into another round of ItsAllMyFault, Mimi exasperatedly exclaims "Oh, not this again!"
* LeftHanging: The following plot threads were left unanswered in ''tri.'', and as ''Anime/DigimonAdventureLastEvolutionKizuna'' decided to [[AbortedArc ignore them]], will likely ''not'' be answered in the future.
** Alphamon's [[spoiler:whereabouts. It suddenly [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse vanishes]] once Raguelmon merges with Ophanimon Falldown Mode into [[EldritchAbomination Ordinemon]].]]
** Who the Mysterious Man and what his goals are. [[spoiler:While at first he seems to be a corrupted Gennai,[[note]][[RelatedInTheAdaptation Which the Dub goes for]][[/note]] the real Gennai is shown to be with the 02 Digidestined, and with his previously shown power to transform into Ken, even his main form could be a disguise. And while he presents himself as an emissary of Yggdrasil, TheStinger for ''Our Future'' has him claim Apocalymon's data that had been inside Meicoomon, declaring his intent to go after Diablomon and Demon next. Just who he really is and what he wants are all as mysterious as he is.]]
* MaleGaze: A few of Rosemon's animations during the battle with [[spoiler:Imperialdramon]] afford these shots, [[Anime/DigimonDataSquad as per usual]]. Mimi also gets a couple of camera gazes while she's dressed up (as a cheerleader) for her CosplayCafe event at school.
* MeaningfulEcho
** In ''Adventure'':
--->'''Gabumon:''' I've waited in this world forever just so I could meet you, and only you!
** In ''Tri'':
--->'''Yamato:''' I came to this world to see you, no one but you!
* MeleeATrois: ''Coexistence'''s final act is a fight between the partner Digimon, Meicrackmon, Jesmon and then Alphamon, who joins in once the fight gets to the Digital World.
* MoodWhiplash:
** In ''Determination'', Tai and Hikari are watching the news of Togemon and Ogremon's battle, solemnly. Then their mom cuts in to point out they've got school.
** ''Coexistence'' has Agumon interrupting serious discussions to talk, ask about, or mention food over and over again.
** ''Our Future'' has Yamato and Gabumon having a conversation about how they'll always be together. Then Yamato notices the other Digimon have been staring at them the whole time.
* MysteriousStranger:
** Meiko's first appearance in the previews has her wearing ScaryShinyGlasses under a bridge holding her Digimon partner between her arms, which seems to be some kind of cat Digimon apparently called Meicoomon[[note]]Based on a Maine Coon[[/note]]. The first film shows she's a transfer student who keeps appearing around the Digidestined. Her father is also a member of the same squad Himekawa and Nishijima work for.
** The first film introduces a woman named Maki Himekawa, described as a "mysterious woman who appears in front of the Chosen Children". She's part of what is effectively a version of [[Anime/DigimonTamers Hypnos]] or [[Anime/DigimonDataSquad D.A.T.S.]]
* MythologyGag
** A book on Taichi's desk is titled ''One Vision'', which was the original Japanese Matrix Evolution (Biomerge) theme from ''Anime/DigimonTamers''.
** Taichi and Hikari's mom calls Agumon "Agu-chan," just like Masaru's mom did in ''Anime/DigimonDataSquad''. She also calls Tailmon "Tail-chan."
** A Government Oversight Group whose whole purpose is to monitor and control Digimon emergencies, who recruit the Chosen Children to help clean up the problems they can't on their own... [[Anime/DigimonTamers No]], we've not heard of [[Anime/DigimonDataSquad one of those]] in a ''Digimon'' series before.
** The evolution sequence bears a lot of resemblance to the one used in ''Anime/DigimonTamers''.
** Yamato's band names, "Knife of Day" and "World on the Knife," may be references to his original ImageSong, Walk on the Edge. One repeated lyric is "I'll even walk on the edge of a knife." ([[http://megchan.com/lyrics/index.php?title=Kazama_Yuuto/Walk_on_the_Edge Translation]].)
** As is tradition in the Digimon anime at this point [[spoiler:Leomon dies horribly]]
** A possibly unintentional one, but Imperialdramon [[spoiler:once again continues his losing streak whenever faced with another Mega level opponent]].
** Much like ''Anime/DigimonFrontier'' [[spoiler:when faced with a massively powerful, evil angel digimon bent on destroying the world, the hero and lancer's digimon not only fuse, but also absorb the power of the other children's digimon to attain a much more powerful form.]]
* {{Narrator}}: After a 14-year absence, Creator/HiroakiHirata returns to bring more exposition.
* NaturalElements: Several are mentioned in the opening of ''Loss'' by Homeostasis, explaining how they interact with and create one another.
-->Light is born of darkness...
-->Darkness sails north to become water...
-->Light sails south to become fire...
-->Wind flows between light and darkness...
-->Light sinks into darkness and returns to earth.
* NewPowersAsThePlotDemands:
** In ''Reunion'', Taichi's Digivice summons Agumon just as Kuwagamon's about to kill him (when opening portals was previously established as a D3 exclusive).
** At the end of ''Confession'', the Digidestined manage to open a portal to the Digital World using their Digivices, along with their Crest powers.
** During the climax of ''Coexistence'', Omnimon suddenly develops the ability to create dimensional portals just when the teens need it.
** In ''Our Future'', [[spoiler:after Angewomon digivolves to her final form, Meiko's digivice glows, allowing Omegamon to fuse with the other six partners to enter Merciful Mode.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** Mimi jumps into a fight with Ogremon in front of the press, thinking that this will show everyone that not all Digimon are bad. Unfortunately Togemon accidentally hits a news chopper during the battle and naturally, public opinion of the Digimon only gets worse.
** T.K.'s decision of keeping the fact that [[spoiler:Patamon is infected]] from the team. If he had told Izzy about it sooner, Izzy might be able to figure out a solution to fix the problem. One could say that the Digimons themselves are partly at fault, too, as they leave the safety of Izzy's private system and out into the real world because they wanted to be with their partners, [[spoiler:eventually leading to all of them getting corrupted by the infection and had to be rebooted, losing their memories in the process.]]
* NoodleIncident: What exactly happened to send the Digimon back to the Digital World before the series is never touched on, since ''02'' ended with them all in the real world.
* NothingIsScarier: ''Coexistence'' has the Divermon of the Dark Ocean just standing in their true forms, staring at Himekawa as she screams frantically at them. They don't move, or react, or say anything, they just ''stare''. Hard to blame Himekawa for being freaked out by that.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes O - Z]]
* OffstageVillainy: Apparently during ''Coexistence'', Meicrackmon and a horde of Digimon summoned to the Digital World are on a rampage destroying many cities... none of which the audience sees, beyond Meicrackmon destroying one power plant.
* PartyScattering: At the mid-point of ''Loss'', a reborn Machinedramon and a sudden burst of portals scatters the kids and the Digimon across File Island.
* PinballProtagonist: The Chosen Children spend a lot of the movies not making any great headway on solving problems, outside of Izzy. Even by the time they know who their enemy is, they make no great effort to ''stop'' them, instead preferring to sit around and angst. Half the problems they face either escape or are solved by someone else's intervention, rather than any direct action of the team's part.
* PlotBasedPhotographObfuscation: The opening moments show a humongous glare on the photograph taken at the end of ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'' in Tai's room, although considering that most people familiar with the older series would know what it is, this is probably less for mysterious effect and more to make the [[ArtShiftedSequel drastic difference in art style]] less jarring. Sora and Joe have the same photo in their rooms, equally obscured. [[spoiler:Turns out to be a case of some really subtle foreshadowing. The only character not to be obscured/fully bathed in light in the photo? Gennai. Whose visage was stolen by the Mysterious Man as he acts as TheDragon to Yggdrasil.]]
* PlotHole: The main cast's lack of interest in the absent 02 kids and their Digimon. [[spoiler:The explanation that the 02 kids and the main cast had "drifted" doesn't account for why they go ignored when the Digimon return, the Digital world is revealed to be in crisis, or when hostile Digimon arrive in the real world, which are all big changes in the status quo that would be relevant to the whole team. The last one is especially bad, because it leaves Taichi, a known strategist, ignoring useful tactical assets.]]
* PoorCommunicationKills: No one bothers to bring up that [[spoiler:Patamon is infected]] to the one person who could have sought into the situation. As a result, the [[spoiler:battle with Meicrackmon]] would have gone ''much'' smoother.
* PrecisionFStrike: At the mid-point of ''Coexistence'', Joe states that everything is "screwed". Which isn't outside of the show's PG-13 level language, except that it's ''Joe'' saying it.
* PrecursorHeroes: [[spoiler:''Loss'' reveals that Daigo and Maki were part of the original Digi-Destined that saved the digital world before Adventure. Adding to that it also reveals that Harmonious Ones were the Digimon Partners of the original Digi-Destined.]]
* ProtagonistCenteredMorality:
** A passive variant. Rather than doing bad and getting away with it, the Chosen passively learn of the objective horrors of what's going on -- the worlds burning, unborn digimon being slaughtered, old friends seemingly going completely mad -- and then blithely ignore them. The kids only confront a problem once it falls into their lap, and even then mostly to make themselves feel better -- when Mimi confronts a rabid Ogremon, it's not to stop him from hurting anyone in his madness, but because it'll counter the depressing anti-digimon coverage in the news.
** Special mentions to their treatment towards Meicoomon. They completely ignore that leaving Meicoomon alive will cause the world to burn and even go as far as turning against Homeostasis over it. Even when Meiko ''herself'' suggests that Meicoomon should probably be slain, they shoot her down anyways and insist to bring Meicoomon back happy and alive, despite Meiko is Meicoomon's partner so she deserves more respect than being blithely shot down and they have no solution to the infection anyways, meaning that the world will burn over some teens who don't want to shoot down an apocalyptic abomination that's also a Digimon partner and said teens didn't care.
* PutOnABus: Despite the fact Daisuke, Miyako, Iori, and Ken were big influences and the main characters in 02, they're taken out of commission at the hands of Alphamon in silhouette within the first five minutes of the first film and are [[spoiler:only found about halfway into the last movie, still only shown by their outlines]].
* RegainedMemoriesSequence: In ''Confession'', [[spoiler:the Digimon lose their memories as a result of the Digital World being rebooted to its original state. They finally remember their former lives]] in ''Our Future'', [[spoiler:which is represented by their travelling through a white void while static images of their past adventures are displayed in the background.]]
* RetCanon: Originally, the ''VideoGame/DigimonWonderswanSeries'' decided that Jou's Gomamon's Mega was Plesiomon, but since the PSP Game, [[spoiler:Vikemon, who was originally Shakkoumon's Mega, has featured in the role.]]
* RetGone: You remember everything that happened in ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'' and ''Anime/DigimonAdventure02''? Halfway through this series, ''Everything that happened in the Digital World un-happens in an instant.'' Only the Digidestined themselves remember. [[spoiler:This is partially undone in ''Our Future'', as the memories of all the Digimon of the previous iteration of the Digital World are returned. It's not without some changes, however, as Digimon that died in the real world, such as Leomon and Wizardmon are BackFromTheDead somewhere.]]
* RuleOfThree: ''Our Future'' is the third piece of media in the ''Adventure'' continuity to have an "Our ____" title, to go along with ''Our War Game'' in ''Adventure'' and "Our Digital World" as the final episode of ''02''. Also see ArcNumber.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:Leomon is dispatched right at the tail end of ''Determination'' to kick off Meikoomon's FaceHeelTurn, in case [[HappyEndingOverride any of you were looking for a happy ending]] after the heroes dispatched Imperialdramon during the big fight.]]
* SailorFuku: Hikari now wears the green middle school uniform from ''Digimon Adventure 02''. Inverted with Sora and Mimi, who wear blazers since they've moved on to high school.
* SanitySlippage: Both Meiko and [[spoiler:Kari]] go through this, the former because Meicoomon is no longer her Digimon partner, [[spoiler:the latter because Tai is apparently ''DEAD''.]]
* SavedByCanon: WordOfGod confirmed that the ''02'' epilogue is still canon, so the audience knows that dire situations like [[spoiler: the ''02'' kids' disappearance, the Digimon losing their memories, and Tai seemingly dying]] will end up not being permanent in the end.
* SeniorYearStruggles: Joe Kido is in his senior year. He's very stressed about his university entrance exams as he wants to be a doctor, which causes him to prioritize his studies over helping his friends with saving the world, at least at first.
* SequelHook: [[spoiler:Koushiro[=/=]Izzy is researching a way to move between worlds, Maki is missing and last seen in the ''Dark Ocean'', and Alphamon and the Mysterious Man are still on the loose. Having recovered Apocalymon's data from the battle with Ordinemon, the latter now seeks the same from [[Anime/DigimonAdventure02 Daemon]] and [[Recap/DigimonAdventureMovieOurWarGame Diablo]][[Anime/DigimonTheMovie mon.]] Unfortunately, ''Anime/DigimonAdventureLastEvolutionKizuna'' doesn't touch on any of these plot points.]]
* SequelNonEntity: An odd example. While we're ''shown'' the main characters from ''Digimon 02'' in this, they're reduced to brief cameos and [[spoiler:the Digimon Kaiser/Ken was an impostor]]. Still, they do better than their family, who just vanish from existence (despite a minor plot point being that the ''02'' kids are missing, something you'd think would concern their loved ones).
* ShipTease: The movies are pretty heavy when it comes to teasing certain ships, including:
** Teasing of both Sora/Taichi ''and'' Sora/Yamato, even simultaneously.
*** In ''Reunion'', Sora tries to go both to Taichi's soccer game and Yamato's concert, and blushes when Mimi points out that both are rather attractive now.
*** In ''Loss'', both Taichi and Yamato notice that Sora is depressed and try to cheer her up. Later they both arrive to protect her from Machinedramon's attack.
** Takeru/Hikari is teased on multiple occasions, along with them often checking up on each other in general:
*** Takeru asks Hikari if she's jealous of his new female friend (which she denies).
*** Takeru (in nothing but a towel) rushes to hold her still when she nearly slips at the hot springs which leads her to blush and look away.
*** Hikari once [[SheIsAllGrownUp notes how grown up Takeru has become]]; though it's not clear if she said loud enough for him to hear (or out loud at all), both of them blush for a second afterward.
** Koushiro/Izzy has an all-out crush on Mimi now, teased throughout the series. This especially shows with his blushing reaction to their reunion, and coming to the school festival just to see Mimi in her cafe outfit. He goes so far as to ask Takeru for fashion advice to impress her, though he [[BadLiar unconvincingly denies that being the reason]]. Even Daigo and Maki [[ShipperOnDeck notice and support this.]]
*** By ''Loss'', it seems to be reciprocated. As they all enjoy a meal with their partners, Mimi sits down next to Izzy and tries to [[ThroughHisStomach directly feed him Sora's cooking, which she has added jelly beans to, since she knows he loves them.]] His face turns completely red at the gesture, And Takeru in the background is dumbfounded at the gesture.
** A new ship, Taichi/Meiko, is teased occasionally, mostly during the second half of the story.
*** In ''Coexistence'', Taichi and Meiko have a brief conversation concerning the events of ''Loss''. The two get off to a pretty good start, with Taichi expressing a liking for her use of Tottori dialect and Meiko complimenting him as a good person, but he is ''very'' offended when she suggests that things would be better if she hadn't been born. Even though he apologizes for yelling at her, the two are disheartened by the thought that they made the other upset until Agumon talks with each of them individually.
*** By the end of ''Our Future'', Taichi talks with Meiko over the phone, [[ShipperOnDeck apparently at the insistence of his friends]]; he has a lot of trouble speaking to her, even blushing when she asks how he's been, as opposed to how talkative he was during the above conversation. Conversely, she seems much more at ease while talking to him, even referring to him as [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics "Yagami-kun", as opposed to the more formal "Taichi-san" that she had used before.]]
* ShoutOut:
** Some of the outfits in Koushiro's clothing simulator include a cosplay of Jack Sparrow from ''Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean'' (aptly titled "jacke") and the school uniform from ''Literature/HarryPotter''.
** Taichi has an English Textbook titled One Vision, the [[Anime/DigimonTamers Tamers']] Biomerge/Matrix Digivolution theme.
** In ''Coexistence'', [[spoiler:an angelic being bound to a girl gets fused with a lanky berserk creature during a final battle and becomes a gigantic, winged, white female figure that starts bringing the end of the world,]] just like in ''[[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion The End of Evangelion]]''.
* SilentAntagonist: Uniquely, each antagonist refrains from speaking. [[spoiler:Averted for the Mysterious Man.]]
* SinisterSuffocation: In "Loss", the Mysterious Man aims to enrage Meicoomon by relentlessly stalking the heroes and trying to kill them with the aid of the Dark Masters. Though his attempts are thwarted thanks to the partner Digimon regaining the ability to evolve, he eventually manages to corner Meiko and chokes her in a way that's ''just'' enough to ultimately cause Meicoomon to succumb to her hatred and transform into her SuperPoweredEvilSide without killing her human partner too.
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism: A main theme in ''tri''. Each movie focuses on two characters: one will be TheIdealist, who sees the world as it should be; and the other will be TheCynic, who sees the world as it is.
** In ''Reunion'', ''Taichi'' of all people is TheCynic, reluctant to fight because he starts to grow and see the consequences of his actions, while Yamato is the one resolved to fight fearlessly. This match-up doesn't make sense until you remember Taichi becomes a diplomat in 02's future epilogue, a very people-oriented job. Thus, he is able to put himself in other's shoes when Yamato can't. However, Yamato knows fully well the damage and deaths will rise if they don't make a stand causing a major dichotomy between the two.
** In ''Determination'', needless to say TheCynic is Joe, who just wants to live the life everyone expects of him but still has the pressure to fight the Digimon, and TheIdealist is Mimi, whose outgoing personality can be seen as selfish and unintentionally hurtful to other people.
** In ''Confessions'', Koshiro is TheCynic, who shuts himself off from the rest of the world and ignores Meiko's feeling so he can ultimately get to the cause of the Digimon infections. Takeru is TheIdealist, who, despite Patamon showing the most signs of being infected, holds on to the belief that he can save his partner and not need to pay the ultimate cost.
** In ''Loss'', Yokomon/Biyomon is TheCynic, refusing to listen to Sora (or any of the other Chosens) as they try to help her remember who she was and why Sora is so important to her. Sora is TheIdealist, adamant in her motherly affections towards her partner [[spoiler:and eventually unlocking her Ultimate form of Hououmon at the end when she sees Biyomon willing to fight again]].
** In ''Coexistence'', the eight original Chosen Children are all TheIdealist, since they believe Meiko's bond with Meicoomon will trump her destructive tendencies and are determined to protect her at all costs, [[spoiler:even going as far as ignoring a direct order from Homeostasis]]. Meiko is TheCynic, spending a good part of the movie blaming herself for the current situation, questioning her worth as a Chosen Child. [[spoiler:In the end, she asks the other Chosen Children to kill Meicoomon]].
* SixthRanger: Meiko and Meicoomon. [[spoiler:At least until Meicoomon goes feral at the end of ''Determination'' and runs off.]]
* SkewedPriorities: Partway through ''Coexistence''. [[spoiler:Meicoomon's gone berserk, the Digital World is tearing itself apart, crazed Digimon are rampaging across the world apparently unstopped, and the Chosen Children think that ''now'' it's a good time to... sit around and start telling ghost stories.]]
* StepfordSmiler: All of the Digimon partners in ''Confession''. [[spoiler:After realizing that all of them are infected, and knowing that the only way out is to wait for the 'Reboot' to happen that has a side effect of removing all their memories, they spent the rest of their times doing happy, nostalgic things with their human partners. Some of them deal with it rather well, while others are less good at it, like Patamon (whom Takeru already knew was infected), Palmon (who clearly is struggling hard to maintain her happiness in front of Mimi) and Agumon (who goes overboard with it and ends up letting Taichi figure out that something is wrong and he is forced to tell the truth.)]]
* StylisticSuck: The flashback at the beginning of ''Loss'' has faded colouring and scratched audio.
* SuddenSequelHeelSyndrome: [[spoiler:Gennai, who was originally TheMentor for the kids. Here, he's now one of the bad guys. ''Our Future'' reveals that the ''real'' Gennai has been locked away in stasis with the ''02'' kids, meaning the Mysterious Man masquerading as Gennai isn't he.]]
* SuperDickery: The first trailer shows Alphamon and Omnimon fighting each other with no context. How can this be? It's eventually revealed that [[spoiler:Alphamon is TheDragon to [[BigBad Yggdrasil]] and only wanted to bring back [[TykeBomb Meicoomon]]. The Digidestined were just in the way]].
* TheresNoKillLikeOverkill: The end of ''Loss'' has [[spoiler:Mugendramon]] wailed on by not one, but ''three'' Mega level Digimon. After they're done, there isn't even the usual cloud of digital sparkles when an enemy dies.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** In the very first episode of ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'', Kuwagamon was taken down by seven Rookie (or Child) level Digimon. In ''Digimon Adventure tri.'''s first part, however, a single "Infected" Kuwagamon is able to stand toe-to-toe with two Champions (Adults) at the same time while defeating Greymon beforehand. And there's three Kuwagamon.
** In the second movie ''Determination'', Palmon and Gomamon assume their Mega[=/=]Ultimate forms Rosemon and Vikemon.
** Tentomon manages to also reach his Mega/Ultimate form of Herculekabuterimon by ''Confession'''s end.
* ToughBeetles: [=HerculesKabuterimon=] is a giant beetle-like Digimon whose sturdy carapace provides protection against most attacks. In his first appearance, he is able to withstand the combined assault of eight really powerful opponents and forcefully push them back into the cyberspace they came from.
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: The trailers and covers don't really try to hold back. Imperialdramon was displayed prominently on the cover for ''Determination'' while [[spoiler:its Fighter Mode]] was shown in the trailer. ''Confession'' had its cover prominently display [[spoiler:Meicrackmon before it was even named]] while for ''Loss'' [[spoiler:not only are Hououmon, Mugendramon and Bakumon featured on the cover but the trailer reveals both the return of [=MetalSeadramon=] and Seraphimon]]. They make up for this in the show by keeping any revealed information about the plot to a minimum.
* TransformationIsAFreeAction: At the end of ''Determination'', Imperialdramon powers up a shot at Zudomon, who manages to digivolve into Vikemon in the seconds it takes the shot to reach him.
* TriumphantReprise: A triumphant instrumental version of Brave Heart plays during the battle between Omegamon and Alphamon.
** This also occurs in ''Confession'' with "Butter-fly" when [[spoiler:the Gate to the Digital World is opened]], as well as in ''Loss'' when [[spoiler:[=WarGreymon=] and [=MetalGarurumon=] fight [=MetalSeadramon=]]], although in both cases the song hadn't been played earlier in the film.
* {{Tsundere}}: Yokomon/Biyomon towards Sora after the reboot in "Loss".
* TwoLinesNoWaiting: ''Loss'' follows the kids trying to reconnect with their partners, and Daigo investigating just what the heck's going on (which stops at the halfway point when he learns it).
* UnlimitedWardrobe: Unlike the TV series, where the characters wore the same clothes all the time, the kids are seen wearing a different outfit nearly every time they aren't wearing their school uniform.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: At the end of ''Confession'', Maki [[spoiler:produces Ken's [=D3=] and a D-Terminal for the kids to use. Despite the fact they know Ken is missing, and as far as they know he's turned Kaiser again, precisely none of the Chosen Children ask when, where or how she got them.]]
* VoodooShark: The identity of the Mysterious Man. [[spoiler:His explanation for wearing his Kaiser outfit is that he needs it to appear in the Real World. Why ''that'' is necessary is left unexplained]].
* WhamEpisode: ''Coexistence'' has a quadruple-whammy of [[spoiler:Meicoomon being Apocalymon reborn, the Dark Ocean reappearing, Tai dying and passing leadership to Matt, and Hikari allowing herself to be corrupted]].
* WhamShot:
** During the opening, the film periodically cuts away to shots of the four ''02'' kids being thrashed by Alphamon, their partners nowhere to be found.
** [[spoiler:Hackmon]] is seen in the shopping center where Alphamon emerges from the Digital World. [[spoiler:Considering one of his Digivolutions was the last revealed member of the Royal Knights, his appearance in the same place as Alphamon could not be a coincidence.]]
** The sudden appearance of the Digimon Kaiser, and taken a step further when he's laid waste to the Primary Village and ''[[DeaderThanDead killed all of the Digieggs there]]'' while a horrified Elecmon looks on. And then [[spoiler:Leomon shows up to protect them, but is injured by an Ogremon in the process]].
** At the end of the second movie, when everyone is shocked due to [[spoiler:Leomon's death and Meicoomon's sudden FaceHeelTurn, blink and you miss it, there is a shot where Maki Himekawa smirks.]]
** ''Confession'' shows the Digimon becoming infected with Patamon being the first to show signs of it, Meicoomon's Perfect level, Ken's D-3 and D-Terminal, and the Chosen Children (except Meiko) going to the digital world. The biggest one is at the end where [[spoiler:"Ken" is revealed to be a Mysterious Man masquerading as Gennai, and working with Maki - who meets him in the Digital World.]].
** The first trailer for ''Loss'' has an appearance by [[spoiler:[=MetalSeadramon=]]], who looks absolutely ''monstrous'' when compared with his look from ''Adventure''.
** The first six minutes of ''Loss'' feature [[spoiler:the original children mentioned once in ''Adventure'' fighting the Dark Masters, including four of their partners becoming the four Sovereigns introduced in ''02''. We also learn that both Daigo and Maki were two of those children.]]
** A lot of the posters have gone for this by highlighting the big fight of the chapter.
*** The first poster proudly displayed Omegamon vs Alphamon.
*** The second poster pitched Vikemon and Rosemon against [[spoiler:Imperialdramon]].
*** The poster for the fifth movie called ''Coexistence'' shows Meicoomon's ultimate/mega form, Meiko, Hikari, and Ophanimon [[spoiler:Falldown Mode, something bad is going to happen to Hikari and Tailmon.]] Meanwhile, the official tie-in cards for the movies reveals that Tailmon's [[spoiler:actual]] ultimate/mega form is [[spoiler:Holydramon]]. Of course, this still raises the question of just what exactly caused the [[spoiler:corrupted Digivolution.]]
** In one of the trailers for ''Coexistence'', the beginning shows [[spoiler:something happening to Hikari. And it does not look good.]]
** In the trailers of ''Our Future'', [[spoiler:Devimon can been seen emerging out of a digital portal, Daigo can be seen lying wounded and bleeding after being hit in the gut, Taichi is [[DisneyDeath still alive]], and Omegamon gets a new SuperMode]].
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse:
** The ''02'' kids are seen falling in battle to Alphamon in the opening minutes of ''Reunion'', [[spoiler:and no mention of this is made again until midway through ''Our Future'']].
** [[spoiler:The team fights an infected Imperialdramon in ''Determination'', but Hawkmon and Armadillomon are nowhere to be found. No explanation is even given if it's the ''same'' Imperialdramon the cast should know, as they completely ignore its familiar appearance. And while ''Our Future'' does explain what happened to the ''02'' kids, their partners are never even mentioned.]]
** ''Loss'' deals with the results of [[spoiler:the Reboot of the Digital World. We see two of the Dark Masters revived, but nothing of the other two. We also have no idea how the Reboot affected the other partner Digimon of Daigo's team, also known as the Harmonious Ones.]]
** At the end of ''Confession'', the gang run into a fight between Alphamon and Jesmon. During ''Loss'', Hackmon appears to Daigo, with no sign of Alphamon, and the fight itself goes completely unmentioned thereafter (Alphamon not even reappearing until the end of ''Coexistence'').
** A plot point of ''Coexistence'' is Digimon [[spoiler:rampaging across the real world thanks to Meicrackmon. No mention is made of all those other Chosen Children from ''02'', or whether they're trying to stop them.]]
** [[spoiler:Alphamon disappears from the plot completely once Ordinemon arrives.]]
** [[spoiler:Maki was last seen being drawn into the Dark Ocean in ''Coexistence''. Aside from a passing mention by Daigo, she makes no appearance in ''Our Future'', leaving her fate unknown.]]
** [[spoiler:Jesmon vanishes into the Digital Gate after freeing Gatomon from Ordinemon, [[WildMassGuessing assumedly due to thinking he had stopped Ordinemon and his job was done.]] However, after Yggdrasil uses its own power to stabilize Ordinemon, he doesn't come back, nor is he mentioned after it is said Homeostasis shut Yggdrasil down, leaving his fate unknown.]]
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds:
** [[spoiler:Maki Himekawa, who is revealed to be one of the five original Digidestined along with Daigo and three others who had saved the Digital World from a great evil a long time ago, but it came with a great price: Maki has to let her Digimon partner be sacrificed so other Digimon partners could became the Harmonious Ones and sealed the Dark Masters away. She didn't even have a choice in the matter as her body was taken over by Homeostasis as Megadramon was being sacrificed. This ended up causing Maki much grief, not unlike how T.K. grieved for Patamon's supposed death. Worse, unlike Patamon, who could come back as a Digi-egg, Maki's partner is KilledOffForReal. From that point, Maki worked tirelessly to research ways to bring her partner back, and even Daigo's attempts to comfort her didn't help much. This allows the Mysterious Man to manipulate her into orchestrating the reboot of the Digital World as it's the only way to bring her partner back, risking numerous lives and threatening the safety of both worlds. What he ''didn't'' mention to her is that her Digimon would not have any memory of her left. [[SanitySlippage From the last we've seen of her, she did not take this well at all.]]]]
** [[spoiler:''Hikari'' turns into one in ''Coexistence'', when Taichi apparently is killed, she abruptly becomes corrupted ''herself'', force digivolving Nyaromon into Ophanimon Falldown Mode.]]
* TheWorfEffect:
** Daisuke, Miyako, Iori and Ken. The four kids who rediscovered and used Armor Evolution and Jogress Evolution? Waylaid and easily taken out at the hands of Alphamon ''in the first five minutes''. Justified, considering Alphamon's status as an {{Olympus Mon|s}} and the fact that 02 Children were without two Jogress Digimon without Takeru and Hikari's presence.
** [[spoiler:Hououmon, Seraphimon, Heraklekabuterimon, Rosemon and Vikemon are all on the receiving end of this. In their initial appearances they all showed great power. Come ''Coexistence'', they only serve to distract Jesmon and Raguelmon from their fight before being taken out when Alphamon attacks Jesmon. Justified given the huge power levels of Omegamon, Alphamon, Jesmon and Raguelmon.]]
* YourSizeMayVary: Take a look at [[http://pbs.twimg.com/media/CVWao5iVAAEPHYH.jpg:orig this scale image]] and see if it follows the scale of Digimon sizes laid out in Adventure. Some of the more ridiculous examples: Garudamon, the tallest of the Ultimate level Digimon is here depicted as being shorter than Greymon. [=MetalGreymon=], who in the series is about 2-2.5 times bigger than Greymon, is only about a head taller. Togemon, who is the third shortest Champion (only Angemon and Tailmon are smaller) is now taller than Kabuterimon, the tallest.
