There are plenty of ways to find that trope you're looking for.

----
* Use our built-in search engine. It's under Tools, click on "Title Search".
** However, this function only searches for the exact words you type in (with and without spaces), and some of our titles are [[WordSaladTitle rather misleading]], metaphorical, or [[TropeNamers allusive]], so it may not be the best way to find a page you're looking for.
* Look up a work that contains a very clear example of the trope you have in mind, then skim the "Tropes" list or the list of pages that link to it (accessible via the "related to" button at the top of the page.)
* Use the Google custom search bar, located at the top of the page.
** You can also add [[http://www.google.com/search?q=site:tvtropes.org+&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a "site:tvtropes.org"]] to the phrase you're searching for in regular Google, to limit your search to the wiki.
* [[ArchiveBinge Read all the way through]] the basic trope indices, such as NarrativeDevices or {{Characters}}. If you're new, you'll laugh at this one. Don't worry, [[JustForFun/TVTropesWillRuinYourLife it'll happen soon enough]].
** If you're lucky, there'll be a smaller index that your trope very obviously ought to belong to if it already exists (like, say, TitleTropes). If so, read through that. IndexIndex is a list of all existing indexes.
* Post on TropeFinder, and let other tropers do the work for you!
* Find a related trope; these will often have compare/contrast links at the end of the article.
* Attempt Administrivia/WickCleaningProjects, you can discover tropes while cleaning up the Main/ namespace.
