* FanPreferredCutContent: Tip was originally intended to appear in the story and turn out to be Oz's rightful king. Cutting out Ozma aside, there are fans who would've wanted to see this, citing how if often felt like Tip was effectively erased in the original story and deserved a happy ending. Cutting out Tip also meant Mombi went from his WickedStepmother to a poor man's Wicked Witch of the West.

* HeartwarmingInHindsight: Creator/MargaretHamilton, the original Wicked Witch of the West, being cast as Aunt Em. Since Hamilton lamented a bit that her iconic role defined her as someone who could only play evil witches (though she did embrace the role even in her later years), Filmation casting her in a role that’s the complete ''opposite'' of the Wicked Witch comes across as a really sweet gesture.

* {{Narm}}: The Green Elephants are already a bit hard to take seriously as a threat, but it doesn’t help that the only sound they make is just a stock elephant trumpet sound repeated ''ad-nauseam. ''

* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Early in the movie, Dorothy meets a talking signpost who points in three different directions to Emerald City but has no clue which is the correct way. He sings a song about his predicament, and...Dorothy just walks off and leaves him. He is never mentioned, nor seen again, and his situation is never resolved.

* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Early in the movie, Dorothy meets a talking signpost who points in three different directions to Emerald City but has no clue which is the correct way. He sings a whole song about his predicament, and...Dorothy just walks off and leaves him. He is never mentioned, mentioned nor seen again, and his situation is never resolved.
* {{Padding}}: Several of the songs, in particular the aforementioned BigLippedAlligatorMoment and the SpellingSong for the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion in turn, seem to be there to get the runtime up to feature length. Indeed, the Tin Man and Cowardly Lion sequences could easily be cut from the movie since they end up serving no plot function ''and'' their characters have to be derailed for that to happen.
*
UglyCute: Jack PumpkinheadPumpkinhead. It helps that he has the smoothest, most expressive animation in the movie.

character derailment is listed in Flame Bait

* CharacterDerailment: This is done to Dorothy's three friends from the original movie. In ''The Wizard of Oz'', despite physically lacking a brain, a heart, and courage, the Scarecrow was actually quite clever when he put his mind to it, the Tin Man was very caring when it came to the well being of others, and the Lion could be counted on to conquer his fears when the chips were down and the others needed him. Here, however, the Scarecrow is a totally useless idiot, the Tin Man cares more his own well being than anyone else's, and the Lion is now a '''total''' wimp scared of his own shadow. How they still have kingdoms to run at the end of this film, despite contributing pretty much '''nothing''' to the defeat of Mombi, is a question for the ages. At least the songs they got to sing were catchy.
