* WhatAnIdiot: Sure, professor, stick your hand inside the thing that looks like a Venus flytrap made of rusty metal. Though to be fair, he recovers from that mistake nicely.

* FridgeBrilliance: One might wonder about why the tubes from the walkers are going into the gills of the fish they're using rather than the mouths like they do with other animals. However, a fish's gills are loaded with bacteria, and since the gas is formed by decay, it makes perfect sense for the walkers to pipe into the places on the fish which are going to produce gas the fastest as they rot.

** The infected humans in the OVA are creepy looking...but their scariness is diminished by the fact that many of them look like what would happen if The ComicBook/IncredibleHulk ate too many cheeseburgers.

* MemeticMutation: "Kaori! Jump out the window!"
** Connected to the above: "Rawr, I am a lion." "Jesus Christ, it's a lion! Get in the car!

* BlackComedy: The scene where [[spoiler:an infected Kaori tries to hang herself on the ceiling lamp and gets pushed around in circles by gas escaping through her anus]] is both a little Squick and slightly amusing.

* RayOfHopeEnding: While the protagonist loses everyone he loves and Japan is in ruins, he meets up with other people who are immune to the Death Stench, who hope to create a cure.

* CrazyAwesome: Both the shark-tank and the Professor in general. Not only does he keep his own [[spoiler: amputated and RE-ANIMATED ARM as a pet, but also designs a massive, corpse-powered, transforming blimp mecha to house his infected body. Badass.]]

* HarsherInHindsight: Once news of the walking fish thing breaks out, the immediate concern of the news broadcaster is the economic damage it would cause, rather than the death toll, which isn’t even given an estimate. Sounds like the UsefulNotes/Covid19Pandemic in the US, where the deaths and all the problems it causes for people have been consistently downplayed in favour of emphasis on the economy.

* HilariousInHindsight: The implacable landshark idea gets milked for laughs many years later, in ''WesternAnimation/{{Madagascar}} 2''.
** The idea of fish scuttling around on insect legs. Then comes ''VideoGame/DragonQuestIX'', featuring a monster best described as [[http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-14/dq9-claw-hammer.html a floating hammerhead shark with centipede legs all along its underbelly]].

* TheScrappy: Kaori due to how annoyingly bitchy she is, along with her whininess well before anything bad has even happened.
** Perhaps in an attempt to remedy this (as Kaori becomes the protagonist of the OVA), the OVA's Kaori reacts much more reasonably. She's shown to be pretty much the only one of her friends that actually does anything ''smart'', she's the only one of the three of them that doesn't turn out to be a total bitch and she's ''extremely'' devoted to Tadashi to the point of [[spoiler: going after him even after discovering he's been infected]]. She even gets SurvivorGuilt at the end!

* UglyCute: Fish are ugly-cute enough in their natural habitat, but skittering around on land, all confused looking? It's a panoply of cute!
** They're [[NightmareFetishist dead]]. And [[{{Squick}} rotting]].
** ''Doesn't make them any less cuter.''

** The infected humans in the OVA are creepy looking...but their scariness is diminished by the fact that many of them look like what would happen if TheIncredibleHulk ate too many cheeseburgers.

** Also the Circus, who's ringmaster has invented gas-powered acrobatics, gas-powered ''flamethrowers'' and a [[spoiler: corpse-cannon, powered by the stored gas of dozens of infected.]]

* NauseaFuel. The whole Manga. Every single bit of it.

* AdaptationDistillation: The OVA adds a few more characters to the roster, while [[DemotedToExtra downplaying]] Tadashi and his uncle and making Kaori the main character. Given that the original manga only had four main characters and was relatively short and straightforward, it's natural to assume that more characters would be added to give the OVA more meat to the story.
** Kaori herself has parts of her personality removed, specifically her obsessive clinging to Tadashi and her overly sensitive nose, while maintaining the same devotion to Tadashi. Her more negative attributes are shifted to two new characters, Erika and Aki.
** Tadashi retains his levelheaded personality even if his role is downplayed in Kaori's favor. [[spoiler: Their roles are generally switched, as Tadashi is the one who becomes infected by the gas while Kaori is trying to find him. The two don't even spend any screen time in the same room up until Kaori finally finds him at his uncle's house.]]
*** [[spoiler:Right before he is attacked by a shark]], Tadashi warns Kaori over the phone not to come to Tokyo, as the walking fish plague has spread there. Not that staying in Okinawa would have been any better...

* HellIsThatNoise: The arrival of the Great White Shark is always precipitated by the sound effect "GAHSHUNK"
